Not sure on where this fits chronologically but feels like it could be a blueprint album for a lot what came after. Love the light touch on instrumentation, highlighting her voice. Funny how the wave of nostalgia makes this sound modern.
An enjoyable listen but not one I find myself thinking “I need to listen again” while listening. Stylistically pretty broad while still feeling cohesive. Some great riffs and breaks.
Love the production, of course it’s Albini. Pop in a Nirvana way but everything is a little weird, which is right up my alley. So many good songs. One of those albums that always sounds like it was released “a few years ago”
Mix of cinematic and impressive restraint on the music, just wish the goals were turned down a bit in the mix (but I get it).
The ur album for an entire wave of recent nostalgia music? Well balanced mix of drone-y slow core and goth jangle pop. Like a warm blanket for your ears.
On the line between free jazz freak outs and sweet grooves
Nostalgia trip with lots of “that kind of sounds like…” moments. Both of its time and ahead of its time sounding.
If Pink Floyd replaced pretension with groove
A solid Young album for this Neil head, but not weird enough?
Might be more memories than music at this point
An impressive feat of a rave album that can be listened to and enjoyed outside the club
Some great sounds but had some distracting moments that took me out of it.
Just good songs. And lots of synth
Like the solo acoustic style. No surprise I like the Suicide style and rockabilly/blues style songs. May need to revisit
Good grooves, great basslines, a sound I always enjoy
Still a great album, but not sure if/when I’ll listen again (since I forgot about them before this).
So many grooves and sounds.
Classic. Love the beats and style, and the humor
A case study in The Sound of the British Invasion. I need to spend more time with it but dig what I’ve heard.
Just not vining with it, but not bad
Another solid Young album. A dash of weird, a dash of droning repetition, my kind of jam
Staple of my youth but couldn’t get into it. I prefer Reanimation?
Soft spot here but it’s amazing how good it still sounds.
Amazing (and unfortunate) how relevant and powerful the lyrics still are. Music highlighted them but sounds a bit “of its time”, reason why it lost a star. Can’t help thinking what it would sound like if it was made today.
Got some groove. Stylistically varied and fun.
Rating benefitted from it being a Friday album, but I kept coming back and listening throughout the weekend. Amazing covers and humorous songs mixed with beautiful music.
Nostalgia record. Still think it’s well crafted and highly enjoyable
Minimal, restrained grooves and good songs
Fun listen with grooves. Talking Heads vibes
Still love the guitar sound and the fun songs are funnier than I remember. But the classic Smith style songs are more of a drag
Fun listen. Feels like the bridge between ABC and The Pixies
Rawk! Also some more psychedelic moments than expected
Yup, sounds like The Beach Boys. Yup, sounds like someone’s sanity slowly collapsing
The blueprint. Love all the demos and alt takes included.
Is this how I become a Kraftwerk head? Some amazing sounds
Really enjoyed this. And nice to see a reggae album make a list from an artist I’d never heard of
Yup, sounds like the band that did Come On Eileen. Still fun
Enjoyed listening but not sure I’ll revisit
Like U2 meets Coldplay with a dash of M83
Surprised by how much I liked this, despite the guitar wankery
I love Nick Drake. This is a regular summer listen
This is an album I’d add to a playlist but wouldn’t listen to the playlist for it
I have a complicated relationship with Radiohead
Not my jam (but Jesus Built My Hotrod has a Suicide vibe)
Classic leopard spandex fun but with some more classic rock and roll showing through
Queen! Really flexing the range here. And Killer Queen is one of my favorites.
Green Eyes was a pleasant surprise. Nostalgia record but still just kind of meh
Kept wanting to listen again. At the least, 5 stars for making me pickup a guitar again and giving me ~ideas~.
Felt like a different band and never really hooked me
More Sabbath than I expected. Sounds like a hell of a show
Enjoyed the music but likely won’t revisit
For both how much I enjoyed it and how much I think this impacted other artists and genres I enjoy
Highlights the songwriting
Really enjoyable album. Like Mika wrote lyrics for Bowie
Not as good as This Year’s Model
What it sounds like inside my head
Got that weird goodness but my relationship with Radiohead is still complicated
The birth of G Funk? Also, Give Up The Funk. 5 stars for that song alone.
Perfectly good rock album. Would put it on a playlist, would listen to the playlist for it.
An oddly important album for me despite how rarely I listen
Musically still top notch, but some of the lyrics haven’t held up so well
Not bad musically, but didn’t hold my attention
Fun and funny with a sound I never get tired of
Did this album, in part, spawn a blog project name? Yes
Funky (at least to start)
Forgot how good this album is. Alone Again Or is a favorite
Hey, no obnoxiously gated drums
Rawk! Liked it more than the last ZZ album
The more I listen the more I like it
I wanted to like it but the production and Polish just aren’t my taste
Oh good, gated drums. I just can’t become a Boss super fan (sorry Thomas)
Not maybe, that’s definitely Oasis
TIL: the name of an Elliott Smith album and that I like it
It’s Prince! Can’t imagine what listening to the first track on this was like when it was first released
My kind of jam. Doom like beats
Of course I like electric Dylan. Cosmic-y
Feels like this should be more well known
Is every Stevie album a classic?
Jack White’s career is officially too good and this album no longer stands out for me, but still great.
Varied yet cohesive, with an rdge
I can’t decide if I like this or not
My style, but felt a little too slow overall
Some truly great songs on here
Might be some cultural cache in this rating
Is Tuesday’s Gone a Free Bird troll?
This is what I think of when I think of The Smiths
Maybe the most Kyle of Beatles albums?
Fun album with some great sounds
Fun listen and great live sound
Solid 80s with some Psych nostalgia, but a bit more ballad-y than I like
Did not realize they did Everybody Hurts
Like a more no wave Talking Heads
Like an amalgamation of bands I like, and delightfully weird in places
The 80s sounds I love, grooves, and a great balance of lyrics to instrumentals
Meh, only this many stars because of the song trinity
Wanted to like the music, couldn’t do the lyrics
Pure 80s and great basslines
Not my favorite Beatles style, but a pretty perfect example of that style
Why had I not listened to this before?
Groove and riffs with a dash of psych
Center of a Venn diagram for me
Like the tones but didn’t grab me
I might be that auto 5 star for SY guy
My kind of Rolling Stones album
Honestly enjoyed this but it couldn’t maintain the energy of the first few songs
Pandering with ska and a poem, I’ll reward it
Big soft spot for this album
Grows on me with every listen
Really like this one. Multiple listens and want to re-listen.
Always like Jimi more than I remember
Not my thing, but seems like a good version of the thing
There were some moments, but mostly a slog
Some fun stuff, some meh. Makes more sense after listening to so much Bowie
Like the first half, second is alright
Still a sucker for early Clapton
Rating in spite of Stairway, not because of
Proto-Rooney? Like a lot about it just not sure I’ll revisit
I need to listen to more Fiona
I could live in these guitars
Feel like this is a defining album of the 2000s
Massive album. Many songs felt like a reimagining of a hit/classic through a punk/post-punk lens
This is THE Stones album for me
This one surprised me. It’s fun
Great live album, but not enough of his cosmic phase
There’s some wildness there
I’m a Pixies fan, it’s official
I want to like it more but it doesn’t stick with me much
I’ve had Last Nite stuck in my head since I saw this was the album
Oye Como Va gives it an extra star
I will probably like it more on relisten, but I just kept wanting it to be Violator
Feels like a reference point for a lot of bands I like
If I were to like a U2 album, this would probably be it
I think I like this more now than when it was released
Fun but mostly makes me want to listen to other stuff
Some interesting stuff but I won’t be listening again
Even just for the first 3 tracks alone
Hard to follow Yellow Brick
Can’t help by love Johnny Marr guitar
I like the array of sounds and lightheartedness
If only for the second half
I try not to, but I love The Police
Deep Purple is always better than I expect
Those enjoyable soul sounds
I really want to like The Flaming Lips but they never grab me
Some classics but didn’t grab me
Like the early rock n roll version of punk
I remember liking Chemical Brothers more
Not an album I’d listen to often but one I understand the impact of and don’t hate
Kept thinking “like an unhinged Mardi Gras”
Can’t deny she’s a hitmaker
This is just fun. And sounds like a sampler’s paradise
Like the style but sounds more like the genre than a singular band
Benefitting from a nostalgia bump, but still enjoyed the listen
Track 7 weirdness and that track 8 guitar tone
I’m just a sucker for Jim
Appreciate the scope, concept, and humor
Old school hip hop meets early techno? Yes please
Byrds vibes without being a retread
Sometimes too weird, but I couldn’t stop listening. The blues touches kept me in it.
Couple good tunes but not sure this is the Stones album I’d revisit
College flashbacks but never really truly hooked me
Like and dislike in equal measure
If I’m going to listen to U2, this will be the album
Not as weird as I want from Cale
Never quite know what to think about Devendra, but pretty sure I skew positive
