I’d rather gaze at my shoes
1.5-2
Wow this list was really made by a middle-aged British man.
Cure for insomnia
For the majority of this album we were in one star territory. I found this unbelievably boring, my mind started to wander by track 3. Then we got to Taste, banging track. Really enjoyed it. The next two were really good to give a strong finale to quite a dull album. I wish I had found the rest of it as entertaining. Top Track - Taste Edit: found out after writing this that the only tracks I liked were bonus ones which I do not count.
Day 34 — Ride — Nowhere (1990) Listened: May 2–3, 2026 Genre: Shoegaze / Dream Pop / Alternative Rock Vibe: Dense walls of distorted guitar washing over buried melodic hooks — atmospheric and hypnotic but anxiety-inducing in its relentlessness. Highlights: ★ Unfamiliar Impression: Two listens and couldn't get through it comfortably. Anxious tone that was hard to settle into. Hooks are there if you dig but felt nothing overall. Not my world. Rating: 1.1/5 Keep songs? Yes Revisit album? Maybe — pending a few more days
The music is ok. Much or it is overproduced synth pop, but tolerable. There’s a couple of songs that are pretty good musically. But man, I HATE how he sings on this. The whiny thing is clearly intentional but I don’t find it good at all.
Much like the albums title, I was left a bit adrift here. Noise rock noises, loads of static and mumbles.
There really is no such thing.
Gross
Vocals far too buried beneath the guitar, as I struggled to hear the lyrics throughout. For those i read, the lyrics were palatable yet generic and weak. The vocal style seems out of place, a low energy 80s whisper which seems out of place on an album with a louder, more 90s sound. Would've enjoyed more with no vocals, and making the album a 90s movie background guitar soundtrack
I keep seeing the term “shoegaze” when looking up this album. I have no idea what it means, but I don’t think I like it. This is another album where I genuinely cannot fathom the praise it receives. As a listening experience, I found it was overly long (however, I think the linked Spotify version includes extra tracks), vocally weak, repetitive to the point that individual tracks blurred together, and frankly, a bit annoying. Production wise, Nowhere was heavy. Guitars are INCREDIBLY layered with so much reverb and distortion that it creates this big clashing sound and almost drowns out any drums/bass for over an hour, without any contrast. The progressions and tone didn’t vary much across tracks and instead relied on heavy effects to add texture/contrast, leaving them indistinct. However, the vocals are the worst part of the album for me. Not only were they emotionally quite flat, I found them to be generally bad. I’m not sure I even really listened to the lyrics very well because I hated the vocals so much. I’m sure there was a lot of technical skill involved in creating this album, with so many effects, feedback control, texture, etc., but for it to sound like this, honestly, what is the point?
Das ist für mich nicht hörbar. Ab in den Papierkorb!
Ugh. Early '90's shoegaze rock makes me want to lobotomize myself. We get it, you're depressed, women probably don't like you, and you do too many drugs. Stop singing about it and drawing every damn note out.
Dire sub REM dirge that wouldn’t be on a 1000001 list
God, that was boring.
In the right circumstances this album is phenomenal. For instance, if you want to make the weekend seem longer, just stick this album on. Album length is officially 1hr 11mins but it feels more like 4 or 5 hrs.......
Not good
More like poogaze. This was so forgettable. Except the song that ripped off When the Levee Breaks, but I don't like Led Zeppelin that much. And I liked this even less. 1 Star.
Typical sound from most alternative bands. Songs all sound the same.
Total crap I’m afraid.
1. zeagull - 0 2. kaleidozcope -0 3. place - 1 4. Polar -1 5. Dreams - 1 6. Decay - 1.5 7. Paralyzed - 1.5 8. Trail - 1 9. Taste - 0 10. Now - 1.5 11. Nowhere - 1 12. Unfamiliar - 1.5 13. Sen - 1.5 14. Beneath - 1 15. Today -1.5
It's get better on the second part of the album, but really no. Just noise but in a bad way, the voice of the lead singer is terrible, look like an endless assurance add.
So meh, it's not even worth talking about. Meh, meh, meh.
I know this sound. There are plenty of other 90's groups that I love that have this sound. Unfortunately for "this group" and "this album" they don't seem to do it as well. Or maybe they're falling victim to not getting me at the right moment....because in this moment I REALLY am not feeling it.....
p654. 1990. 1 star. Tedious indie guitar driven noise that desperately wants to be the Stone Roses, but lack the songs or the talent. And at 1hr 15mins it outstays its welcome big time. Utterly forgettable. WTF chose this for the list?
I like the idea of shoegaze and the wall of sound in theory, but in practice I can't stand listening to this music. I can really get into an atmospheric sonic trance experience, but there are so many more actually enjoyable examples of that. This music hurts my ears and reminds me of stoner boys from Connecticut in college trying to convince me to get high at 2:00 pm on a Tuesday and listen to this stuff.
My first from the Shoegaze genre. Soft airy vocals are submerged in layers of noisy, swirling, reverb-drenched guitars, where bright, chiming tones crash into waves of distortion. Overall my ears were strained.
Not on Amazon music
Boring.
Shoegazing is literally just as fun as gazing at your shoes.
Trite lyrics, stock shoegaze sound; not much else to recommend it.
The Good: We were warned… The Bad: We still ended up nowhere… The Ugly: Total waste of a ride to get there… It’s so interesting how regionality colors the music that you listen to. Imagine that you were living in Bozeman, Montana, when this album came out… This ain’t no Bridger Creek Boys! I’t is hard for someone who missed the shoegaze phase, and doesn’t have suppressed anger hidden down deep in his soul, to listen to this and think “golly, that is some soothing music”. I listened to this album… check it off the fucking list—pardon my language there, but the noise just got to me and I guess that I did have some suppressed anger hidden down deep somewhere, and this music has pulled it out and ruined my day… 1* for being shit
They another generic indie album, nothing innovative and have probably skipped their songs on a shine album
Wow. That was horrible. One of the least enjoyable albums on the list.
Oh neat. More whiny emo music
The most vanilla shit I’ve listened to. Each song sounds the same.
Too droney for me
A droning cacophony of lukewarm piss and sludge. Boring as hell.
bah
What a waste of talentless dribble, what record executive got payola for this one?
Wasn’t for me. Went nowhere 🥁
This was painful to listen to. It felt like I was listening for 3 hours and then I looked down and I was only halfway through the 4th song. 1.5 stars
“Tiiiiiiiiiiime. Why is it measured in hourrrrrrsssss?” Deep lyrics, man.
Boring
Dull…
This a good album, just not my genre tbh. I don't really know how to rate this, cause like idk. None of them are really playlist worthy for me, but then again I don't really fuck with shoegaze, kinda a slow and boring genre for me. I will accept I am wrong with this rating, but 1/5.
Monotonous drivel.
That was so hard to muscle through. At times I got REM vibes, but I love REM and I hated Ride. Just couldn’t wait for it to be over.
This album was terrible. I'm kinda floored it's on the list. I had never heard of them before, now I know why.
I fail to see where's the charm on this record
this is boring! 1/5
Kut album
Nothing but noise
Bloody boring and tedious, terrible. Showgaze is the perfefct name for this terrible style of music. 0 stars if I could.
Album 390 of 1001 Ride - Nowhere Rating : 1.5 / 5 I just don't really have any real interest in this "Shoegaze" genre. Does nothing for the music lover in me.
Meh meh
Why are they so miserable? Did their mummy's ask them to do the washing up. Poor kids. Waste of an hour.
Geese farts on a muggy day.
Not my cup of tea.
Quite Boring 😔
If a Ride album is playing in the woods, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Doesn't matter, this album is of no consequence to anyone or anything. 1 falling tree out of 5 🌳
I just don't get this type of music. Morose indie kids with lots of guitars and nothing to say. It plods along without touching me at all.
Probably cool to someone
Incredible boring album, nothing stood out as good, it all just felt like I was listening to waves crash on the beach but with vocals. At which point I would rather just listen to waves crash on the beach.
I like rock, just not any of these tracks. So I guess I'm saying I don't like Nowhere based on this album. Not my thing at all.
Not great, couldn't finish
sucks
Found this one boring
Kind of liked the first song, but then noticed every other one is the exact same muffled sound, so you don't hear anything clearly ever (except drums, which I found to be the only enjoyable thing).
ah the english...
WTF! Wikipedia gives the music genre as Shoegaze / Neo-Psychedelia / Noise Pop, and then defines Shoegaze as a subgenre of Indie and Alternative Rock characterized by its ethereal mixture of Obscured Vocals, Guitar Distortion and Effects, Feedback, and Overwhelming Volume - what a load of pretentious bullsh*t! It's just a wall of noise.
Is it all one song, or is it the same song over and over again? Who can say? 1.0
On paper, this seems like a home run for me. Noisy guitars, aggressive drums, vocal harmonies. All things I like. But boy did I struggle (and fail) to get through this. I just couldn't grab on to the melodies. The production seemed frail. And the vocals really had no personality or life in them to the point where I groaned any time they started singing. I like shoegazer music, but I really did not care for this album.
Total “music you hear from someone else's headphones while passing them on a busy train” of an album.
oh my gosh this album was boring. is shoegaze a synonym for boring?! i mean, nowhere is fine on the whole. there were some pretty strings and encompassing music, but i could not wait for it to end. i typically reserve 1s for albums that are unlistenable or the artist is a dbag. well, ride is a special case. byeeee
Could not finish. Was really boring, and nothing stood out. I liked bandwagonesque more than this surprisingly.
Good god this was boring. Like a dad rock version of My Bloody Valentine. All the edges sanded off. British rock was in a dire place on 1990 wasn't it, if this is a high watermark. Couldn't even hate my way through it, it was too dull. Actually celebrated it ending.
Could not get into this one. Give me more Laibach instead
Into the first track. Get lost later.
Instrumental, kind of just noise
Yeah, as obnoxious as Oasis. Has a few great songs and the eponymous Vapour Trail, but it was just the angry opening album and Bell would go on to greater things and eventually join aforementioned boyband.
I want to say this will be world music? Something like Enya? The cover and song titles would suggest that. Maybe some very chilled out electronica? Ok I was WAY off. It's alternative, a bit shoegazey, etc etc. Ahhhh, it's from the UK!! what a fucking surprise. And it goes for over an hour, because what else do you want from a style that involves no musical variation whatsoever? Ok, that was a real bloody chore. Once I'm done with this project, I'm never listening to anything from the UK again. Excruciatingly long, dreary, monotonous, boring, etc etc. 1/5.
The whole album sounds like something you’ve heard before even though you haven’t. It’s basically 1990s noise.
My 1001albums listening buddy liked this album enough to add it to her listening library and now I’m not sure we should be listening buddies any more. 😂 I did not like this album. Not even a little bit.
No expectation as the only information I had were the cover art and the date, never having heard of the band before. First impression, a minute into the first track is that of a less competent Hawkwind - we'll see. It flattered to deceive in that it started as reasonably good psychodelic rock but migrated quickly (by track 3) to very boring indie rock. Still, have to give it more time yet, it might be a temporary aberration. No, not temporary it goes on with more boredom. What could be interesting songs absolutely demolished by flat and uninterested vocals. Even the 'hit' Vapour Trail does not manage to alleviate the tedium. I suppose that there are people in the world that like being bored, there is no other explanation for 17 million plus streams of this track! I gave up at track 10 to go and watch the paint dry
Pop ambiental. Repetitivo y mareante.
Disliked this a lot. All the songs sounded the same to me, it got boring. Don't know why it made it to this list.
Belle merde
Must start by saying that I am not a big Shoegaze band fan. This album displays on obscene amount of distortion with the common sad bastard lyrics. I do know that drummer was in the wrong band. He is the bright point of this album. If we could strip away all the other instruments and the vocals this would be a much better album. Will not be a listening party involving Ride.
lightly Byrds-y, tinny guitars jangling away with no songs, no swing, and a weird mix where the slightly fey, whiny vocals are mixed way way back, behind the guitars that never really develop into anything
I wish I could give this album negative stars This is such a muddy mix. Muddy guitar, bass guitar, and drums. With soft spoken vocals make listening a chore. This is like four angsty 17 year olds got a band together after only spending a year with their instruments. Then got their dad’s audio engineering friend that used to record using analog methods in the 60’s and 70’s. And he is trying to figure out how to record digitally. Just do yourself a favor and skip this album
Nope
Meh
I don't get it
Drowned in th le chaos of the sound. Bad
oh my lord this was BAD. boring annoying vocals meh each song was the same ew
lozer beller and gardener the lads noise popping it up but nothing special for me. probably heard bits of this before but it's hard to tell. lots of flying, birds and references to words innit.
noisey, couldn't get through it all
meh
No thanks.
Wenigstens weiß ich jetzt was shoegazing ist. Die langen Intros machen ungeduldig auf das, was noch kommt. Meistens kommt danach aber nur unbedeutendes Rauschen. Das CD Cover gefällt mir.
Meh. Not my bag at all. Melodic, but nonsense.
Pop ambiental. Repetitivo y mareante.
confusionario
dated noise pop. gets really tiring after a while. not for me
