This is another band on this list I've never heard of before listening, I was pleasantly surprised. A really good album full of some awesome tunes. 3.5/5

Guitar

I knew nothing of this, but as I listen I think that this must be either highly derivative Britpop bilge, Ride being an act that prowled the scene in the mid-90s, but were only picked up by incredibly poncy public school journos writing for NME while trying to convince scene chicks that they were the son of a chip shop owner from Stoke rather than of the EMEA commercial director of a mid-tier bank from Surrey, or the incredibly influential progenitors of britpop bilge, only listened to by whiny Mancunian teenagers. Turns out to be the latter. These guys have clearly heard The Smiths, Inspiral Carpets and The Cure, but manage to take their music away from shoegaze towards the britpop tropes that became relevant four years later. Musically, it's too sweeping melody, wailing guitar for me. But I can see how they'll have shaped music.

Pretty poor production but interesting 80s/90s crossover. Not enough in it for me but can see where they were trying to go with it. 2/5.

Pretty middle of the road 2/5. There's the odd bit of cool sound in there, hints of Stone Roses type music, but nothing particularly notable. Probably would've been better with the original, shorter version than the remastered one that Spotfiy hoists upon you, but can't say I was ever hooked.

I really like the wave noises

This is a really confident debut and it's influence on that iconic floaty shoegaze sound is massive. It's a bit rough around the edges, with the vocals being a bit underwhelming, and doesn't reach the heights of Going Blank Again However, when you let the sound of it immerse you it's really impressive. And while the reverb-heavy swells are used to great effect throughout, the most impactful song for me was Dreams Burn Down with sudden bursts of volume punctuating the structure and contrasting with the more dreamlike softer textures

A little shoegazey VERY ‘90s indie. This is a good not great entry into that genre. No real “single” hurts this a bit.

Must start by saying that I am not a big Shoegaze band fan. This album displays on obscene amount of distortion with the common sad bastard lyrics. I do know that drummer was in the wrong band. He is the bright point of this album. If we could strip away all the other instruments and the vocals this would be a much better album. Will not be a listening party involving Ride.

This album would have been quite enjoyable were it not for the vocals. Parts of it were downright hard to listen to because it reminded me of stepping on a cat. Shame because some of the melodies and arrangements were great.

Was not a big fan of this. It’s pretty droned out and all the songs sound pretty similar. However, it was not unbearable.

I was introduced to shoegaze as a subgenre in the last year, and I really enjoy it. This album is one of my favorite examples. It's more lyrical than Loveless by My Bloody Valentine, which is my other favorite showgaze album (extremely obvious picks, I know). The lyrics blend into the music well. The instrumentals and production are excellent. This is also one of the few albums that I feel like listening to the songs added with the reissues benefited the album. A really solid album all the way through 4/5

Somewhere between the mountainous figures that are grunge, punk, and electronica, a delicate subgenre lies: shoegaze. And what exactly is it, gazing at a shoe until you hallucinate? Something like that. Do valleys have summits? It's weird to call "Nowhere" the summit of this curious valley, but it is. Wooshy guitars, dreamy vocals, trance-y drums... it's a perfect background music, but it can be more than that. This album is the best representation of the genre. A ride across nowhere, but a ride nonetheless. PS. Just listen to the original first 8 tracks. The bonus tracks dragged the album A LOT, and those tracks are the reasons why I disliked this album at the first listen.

Easy to listen to, but nothing really stood out.

"Ride" the wave of sound! It's awesome. Actually enjoyed this sort of shoegaze more than Loveless. It's got a very british edge to it, which I could take or leave, but the soundscape in combination with the band's style of songwriting is a wonderful listen. I just wish some of it stuck with me more, but repeat listens can help with this.

Sub-par Stone Roses. All a bit same-y and forgettable

What do you do when you're a Britpop band in the early 90s with two singers that can't really carry a tune all that well? You bury them in the mix, turn up the guitars, and ride the wave (sorry) of the burgeoning shoegaze movement. A few triumphant moments, but they're a little too sparse. Best track: Vapour Trails

So it turned out I'm the only person of my age who didn't know what the 'Shoegaze' genre of music was (Creation Records Bread & Butter). Well this is it. A tedious blending of instruments and music, so all tracks sound identikit & mortifyingly dull.

Every song is amazing, even the bonus material on the reissue.

The Wordle of albums. Just a nice, easy way to pass the time that some people unnecessarily feel the need to make into a big deal.

Pretty good! I like more prominent vocals but generally a fan of this music style. Psychedelic rock, maybe? Reminds me a little of Tool, Pink Floyd in some parts, Steven Wilson for sure.

Ah, shoegaze. A genre that excites me for about three minutes. Loved the drum work on this album but the vocals seemed to drone on. Lots of repetitive noise and not much in the way or hooks.

lightly Byrds-y, tinny guitars jangling away with no songs, no swing, and a weird mix where the slightly fey, whiny vocals are mixed way way back, behind the guitars that never really develop into anything

I bought this record on vinyl when it was reissued in 2010ish. Because everyone said it was a great shoegaze record. Ok. It's ok. Ride isn't my favorite shoegaze band and I think "Nowhere" is just fine. I mean, I'm never gonna tell a band to use less noise and less guitar pedals. I'm glad I'm listening again because I haven't listened to this record since I bought the reissue. If you asked me to rate before re-listening, I would have given this a weak 2. Now I'm giving it a weak 3. There is better shoegaze and I hope its on this list because I want to talk about My Bloody Valentine and Cocteau Twins. Like, real bad.

Really liked this one. I've never heard of Ride, but they are right up my musical alley. It's 90s rock/pop, but still pretty indy rock - not too commercial sounding. I like that. At times I heard some Toad the Wet Sprocket in there (although I'm sure that's not what they were going for). Really good. My gut says this is a 4, but I'm wondering if it's just the newness. I reserve the right to amend my rating upon subsequent listens.

Not too bad.....for one or two songs. After that they all sound exactly the same.

Stunning debut! I was 18 when this came out and Ride's brand of Shoegaze was music I could lost in. This album and the first eps dominated my walkman for many months that year. I had a long sleeve t-shirt with the cover on it that I got from their Australian tour and it wore it with pride. For me this is a perfect blend of a sonic onslaught and Byrdsesque jangle pop. Stand out tracks are Polar Bear and Vapour trail. Four stars because as much as I love this, it still doesn't capture how good they were live or the perfection of their first eps.

I wish I could give this album negative stars This is such a muddy mix. Muddy guitar, bass guitar, and drums. With soft spoken vocals make listening a chore. This is like four angsty 17 year olds got a band together after only spending a year with their instruments. Then got their dad’s audio engineering friend that used to record using analog methods in the 60’s and 70’s. And he is trying to figure out how to record digitally. Just do yourself a favor and skip this album

Kwartjeszoekers noemde Arie en ik lui die zo dansten al jaren voordat we wisten wat Shoegaze was. Ben helemaal niet vies van dit genre, maar echt super boeiend is dit plaatje ook weer niet te noemen.

Ik heb dat hele shoegaze genre nooit helemaal begrepen. Het verzandt toch te vaak in eindeloze stofzuigersessies. Nou viel dat hier mee, maar toch boeide het me te weinig

Beetje veel van hetzelfde, met een paar mooie uitschieters. Een grondlegger in het 'shoegazing' genre, en dat zie ik eerlijk gezegd wel voor me: voorovergebogen naar je schoenen kijkend een beetje op deze muziek dansen.

Mooie albumhoes. Verder vind ik het niet spannend.

Me gusta. Quizá no lo suficiente, pero sí tiene grandes canciones. "In A Different Place", "Vapour Trail", "Here and Now" y "Nowhere" son ejemplos. 9/10

This album was mostly noisy with mushy vocals. Luckily, the music itself, while noisy, was pretty good if you like post-punk/neo-psychedelia stuff. I'm inclined to give it a weak 3 stars.

Sounds like a Sunday night MTV band from 1990. Up my alley but by sing 3 I’m a bit bored. Not bad at all though. It really captures a time and place. I can see myself in my basement bedroom in 9th grade playing this while I talk on the phone to my friends and avoid homework.

Feels like 80’s kid listened to a lot of Big Star. Psychedelic garage rock. Youthful. Lovely.

So… guess I like shoegaze?? I don’t care for the anemic vox (this is becoming a theme…). I hate how it seems like he’d rather be doing anything else. Especially when every other aspect of this is actually brilliant. Driving rhythm section. Good use of dynamics and harmonic tension. Creative macro and micro songwriting. Put Thom Yorke or PJ Harvey or Phoebe Bridgers in charge of vocals and you’ve got an all-timer.

It's curious how this is counted as a shoegaze album when, with the exception of a song like "Dreams Burn Down", it's mostly just neo-psychedelic britpop with distorted guitars. Great album, great songs and a great rhythm section

I am secret shoegaze fan so was looking forward to this when it popped up this morning. It wasn't as good as My bloody Valentine or Slowdive but was decent enough. 3/5

This is stunning, straddling shoegaze and something else. Don't get me wrong, I've got a weakness for shoegazing and that's what draws me in, but the noise-pop/rock elements are well-executed. Decay seems like the most driving and least conventional track of the front eight, but fits the tracklist well. Dreams Burn Down carried the most emotional weight for me. The back or bonus seven songs were less even but still welcome listening.

Ik denk dat shoegaze de weg heeft voorbereid voor de groten zoals Radiohead. Ik vind het wel lekker, al is het af en toe wel ‘veel’. Het dromerige weet mij altijd te boeien. Alsof er een ‘laagje’ onder zit.

I don’t greatly dislike this. I just have no interest in ever listening to it again. I can see what it’s reaching for, a sort of Cure/Smiths thing meets psych rock and at times I found myself nodding appreciatively at the guitar breaks. But I’m amazed this had stood the test of time, it’s so uninteresting to me. Sometimes this list feels like things are included just because they were really popular at the time, but does anyone actually still listen to this album??

If you were to point me to this album and say “here is a pretty decent album” I would nod and say “yes, here is a pretty decent album. It has a semi-epic, sweeping melodic quality, which combats neatly its noise-rock leanings. Pretty decent. Thanks.” If, on the other hand, you were to point to this album and say “there are 1001 albums that you MUST listen to before you die, and this is one of them” I would cock an eyebrow and say “It’s a decent album, don’t get me wrong, but I can’t help feeling I’ve been goosed here. I now HAVE listened to it before I died, you got your wish, but I can’t help feeling you’ve somehow pulled a fast one on me with that.”

Specialising in a shimmering kind of relentless noise which doesn't break for choruses, verses, solos, anything. Lax tunings, lots of cymbals, recorded to create the effect of being heard through two woolly hats and a balaclava. Most recent modern example of the style (though not the production values) is Seek Shelter by Iceage, except the atmosphere here is more light sea spray than impending cloud of volcanic ash. Biggest problem are those vocals, though. Conspicuous by their absence (or as good as).

fav tracks - in a different place, dreams burn down, paralysed, vapour trail, sennen, unfamiliar, nowhere, today. loved the cacophonous ending, beaautiful.

I think this is going to be much more my type of thing! Although perhaps not perhaps stretching my taste much beyond 90s indie! - I don't know this album, but I know later ride albums a bit. Looking forward to it. Seagull - not as melodic as I expected. Maybe a bit too much going on, musically. Kaleidoscope - the youtube version seems a bit muted. But nice. Better with the volume up a bit higher! In a different place - love the start. rest is fine! Nothing special - so shoegazey it drifts past a bit Polar bear. like intro again . Gets a bit same-y. Dreams burn down - passed me by a bit. Decay - don't like the singing as much, and a bit sub-Joy Division. Paralysed - stats off nice and noodly. Generally nice feel to it - just slightly more up-beat. I think I just like this singer's voice (Bell ratehr than Gardener apparently). Vapour Trail - apparently this is the single. Jangly - quite like it, but still not love. other trakcs were 'bonus' on various formats (CD and re-issue). Only half-listened to these.

A pleasant psychedelic experience. Images of kaleidoscopes and teenagers that need a wash comes to mind. Limited sing along options.

Album starts off with a bang with Seagull exploding from the speakers. Right away I can tell that this album will suit my tastes perfectly. Favorite songs; Seagull, Kaleidoscope, polar Bear, vapor Trail 4 🌟

Drum heavy jangly alternative rock. I can imagine this going down a storm with sensitive young men of the era. Not exactly my cup of tea but eh.

Another shining example of the difference between British and US alternative rock from the 90s. The Brits winning out nearly every time.

When I saw "Shoegaze" I was a bit concerned, but it beat my expectations. I enjoy the "dreamy" vocal style.

Not an album that thrilled me - admired rather than enjoyed. There is a repetitiveness to the music and it’s pretty downbeat.

Never have I been so amazed at listening to a song for the first time before I've heard "Seagull". I still can't believe that track exists. "Vapour Trails" is such a very fun and joyful song. High 4.5/5

What a beginning to an album. A little weird turned into almost grunge. Reminds me a bit of Nirvana, but not completely. I think I would have loved this album had I heard it in middle or high school. MAYBE even college. Just about done with the album now. It was good but nothing super special. Kind of run of the mill soft-ish rock album from the 90s. Rating a 3.

Great album and when you consider it’s a debut, even better. Not everyone’s cup of tea sure, but shoegaze was effectively soundscapes via guitar effects and it is done near perfectly here, particularly Vapour Trail & Unfamiliar. There is also a pop element to this album which they improved on ‘Going Blank Again’ but sonically Nowhere is a treat.

Really conflicted about this was. Sounds really special in parts, much of it is very good. But then it is very samey all the way through and god he’s voice is dreadful. A 4 would suggest I love it. A 2 would suggest I’ll never revisit but it was just interesting enough to make me want to go back. So I’ll have to go 3/5

And once again, thanks to this project, I not only discover a new band but also a new subgenre: "shoegaze" (according to the Wikipedia entry, "is a subgenre of indie and alternative rock characterized by its ethereal mixture of obscured vocals, guitar distortion and effects, feedback, and overwhelming volume"). This album is really good, this band is great, and I'm glad I've been introduced to them. Remind me a bit of the Meat Puppets, who I like, as well as a bunch of 90s bands that came after, and were probably influenced by, the Meat Puppets, this group, and similar bands at the time. Really great music here.

Not as noisy and unfocused as MBV. I can see the progression towards Leave Them All Behind and Twisterella. OK, probably prefer early Verve for this type of textured music.

Pretty mint album, you can definitely hear echoes of The Stone Roses which I was not expecting. 'In a different place' deserves to be amongst the pantheon of indie classics. Not sure if that's the case as I have certainly never heard of this band.

A great album which shimmers and shines with murky melodies. Like the album sleeve, the beauty can be found on the ocean surface or lurking underneath. The tones and production is first rate. Not sure why Vapour Trail isn't played at every indie disco.

Das Album dürft ein grower sein, ich mag diese Soundwände. Da hört man aber nicht seine 2-3 Lieblingssongs, sonder muss eintauchen. Interessante Neuentdeckung für mich.

Wenigstens weiß ich jetzt was shoegazing ist. Die langen Intros machen ungeduldig auf das, was noch kommt. Meistens kommt danach aber nur unbedeutendes Rauschen. Das CD Cover gefällt mir.

Introspective, ethereal lyrics, mixed with jingly jangly drums and guitars . The first time I've heard of the genre "shoegazing" it basically means the artists and audience all look at the floor and sway as the music plays. To be honest it's not that bad, sounds a little bit like James, crossed with The Stone Roses, crossed with Oasis but without any of their emotional high points. Guitarist Andy Bell has played with Oasis and was lead guitarist in Beady Eye. Best track: Vapour Trails.

Kannte ich noch nicht, hätte aber gut auf meine 2005er-Playlist gepasst. Klingt ein bisschen nach Sonic Youth aber reißt mich nicht ganz mit. Hab aber auch nur ein bisschen reingehört.

Gefällt mir, kannte ich bisher nicht - aber auch nichts super besonderes.

Good for listening whilst working. No big wow effect but agreeable

This ride took me nowhere, sadly.

This album falls into a genre characterized by distorted guitars, 'dreamy' vocals, and feedback. But that doesn't excuse an unrefined sound and overly hollow lyrics. Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention, but I mostly just heard noise from this album.

Nowhere seems to hold consensus as the second-best record of the shoegaze era, and with very good reason. All of the common words, phrases, and adjectives commonly used with the short-lived subgenre fit properly here, and they're all positive, every one of them. Whir, whoosh, haze, swirl, ad nauseum -- this record holds all of these elements at their most exciting and mastered.

Memories of my teenage college days. Some real classics on this but a couple don't sound so good this far removed from the shoegaze heyday.

Compact wall of sound with intriguing but beautiful melodies in what is one of more significant shoegaze releases

Das Debüt der Shoegaze Pioniere wirkt vom Sound etwas blass-dünn, gestreckt auf die Dauer von über einer Stunde unterstützt der wimpy Gesang eine müde Monotonie, was bereits auf „Going blank again“ als Schwachstelle erkannt und aufgepeppt wurde. Immerhin beinhaltet dieser leicht aufgeblähte Erstling so beeindruckendes Material wie „Dreams Burn Down“ oder „Vapor Trail“. 1st coming bonus: 2.5

Mein Teenage-Ich (und gut gefundene Mädchen) haben es geliebt, und mit den Gitarren, dem Schlagzeug und dem Bass, vor allem aber dem fantastischen Shoegaze-Style gab und gibt es ja auch viel zu lieben. Trotzdem war mir schon damals die Produktion zu mies - und ist sie es heute erst recht. Neu aufgefallen - lag aber vielleicht auch an den Boxen - der noch sehr verbessernder Gesang, oder such hier zumindest die Produktion, die ihn stellenweise viel zu weit in den Vordergrund stellt - obwohl Bell und Gardener noch nicht besonders gut waren und beim Harmoniegesang üben mussten. Beim nächsten Album saß das alles besser. 3,3.

With an opening track named Seagull, I was pretty hopeful for this album. A bit dreary with some dreary harmonising to really drear it up. A few tracks a bit more ironed where the music drowned out the vocals

What a pleasant surprise and so worth listening to. First introduction to shoegazing dream pop, and Ride did a fantastic job! I am sold on the band and their sound, many great tunes, perfect length, and Vapour Trail is amazing!

Very shoe-gazey. Loud instruments, low vocals. In context, this album probably influenced a lot of later music. In present day it's just mediocre.

Recuerdo lo poco que había escuchado de shoegaze por Bloody Valentine o Dinosaur Jr como un pop etéreo bastante ruidoso y como mal ecualizado. No me encantaba pero tampoco se me había hecho algo malo u ofensivo a los oídos. Este disco me pareció mejor de lo que esperaba, de hecho en muchos casos creo que aunque se nota la influencia y la similitud en mi opinión todavía no se le debiera de llamar shoegaze como tal. Aquí los géneros se sienten variados y más separados, inicia con algo que se oye como noise tal cual heredado de Velvet Underground o algo que podría estar tocando Sonic Youth, por otro lado pasa a canciones de franca psicodelia; pero psicodelia de rock ácido de sonido sucio del bueno como si fueran de las bandas desconocidas de 25 años antes. Polar Bear se me hizo una canción excelente en la que ya se siente más la guitarra esa fuerte etérea aunque lo suficientemente pop y nítida en la voz como para poder entenderle bien. Un disco ruidoso, correcto en la que se siente la historia de la que viene se puede sentir el Velvet, el Brian Eno incluso, ese postpunk, Cocteau Twins y tantas cosas más. No será mi género favorito, no es un género que haya perdurado e incluso creo que rápidamente paso de una música experimental interesante a hacerse pretensioso y algo engreido pero no hay duda que me agrada haber conocido este disco.

Had not heard this before, though reminds me a lot of Ned's Atomic Dustbin and God Fodder. I can better understand what shoegaze is after listening to this. Very enjoyable.

A pleasant surprise! Really cool surf rock album.

I liked this pretty well but like most of the so-called shoegaze genre it had a problem of slipping I to the background and no particular time or lyric ended up really standing out for me.

Este disco me sorprendió. Nunca había escuchado ni de “Ride” ni del género Shoegazing, pero es claramente un precursor o influencia de lo que eventualmente sería el britpop. Algunas canciones de hecho me recuerdan a Oasis por el uso del “Brickwalling”, como por ejemplo la primera del disco: Seagull. Creo que este disco se hubiera visto beneficiado si hubieran quitado algunas canciones, pero aún así es bastante bueno. Lo que más me impresionó es que fuera grabado “en vivo” en estudio, haciendo gala del dominio de los pedales y los efectos. Mis canciones favoritas fueron “Here and Now”, “Dreams Burn Down” y “Sennen”.

Raro. Se supone que es shoegaze y es de sus exponentes interesantes pero no todo me suena así. De hecho, me suena bastante inconsistente, con rolas que definitivamente sí cuadran con el género: sin coros, muy planas, muy atascadas de efectos y una sensación oscura. Pero también hay otras rolas que me suenan a algo distinto desde antecedente a los Smashing Pumpkins o incluso a Muse, o en otras ocasiones a una banda de prepa que está aprendiendo a destacar en sus instrumentos y la batería y el bajo hacen casi casi ejercicios de ritmo básicos.

Awful jangly indie with zero substance to it. It's the equivalent of a limp handshake from a slightly moist hand. Nasty.

A shoegaze classic. Ride is the final head of the three headed shoegaze monster of My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Ride, and this is their seminal album. They play a more confrontational, more drum-heavy brand of shoegaze than their noise-pop contemporaries, but it is just as essential.
