Sheryl Crow at home
Not my thing!
Incredibly soporific and middle-of-the-road. Her voice is whiny. Uses the exact same phrasing, rhythm, tempo, and instrumentation for over half the songs on the album. Mentions angels a lot. Sounds like a free demo.
Lucinda, I'm sorry nobody told you this any sooner, but you cannot sing.
A good song
Meh
Made it halfway through song 6 - couldn’t take it any more. Awful voice, dull as dirt.
Meh
No shot I'm getting through this one Will I listen to again: 0%
Boring generic and forgettable
Fucking awful
That was painful to listen to
Dear God please let this end. I am not enjoying this. I do not like her voice. The instrumentals are okay. I'm sure this is for someone, but not for me. It probably should be at 2, but I'm not having a good time so here is my first 1 out of 5 stars.
As Randy Jackson once said "Yeah, that's gonna be a no from me, dawg"
This was one of those albums my parents insisted on buying and listening to on repeat, intent on believing it was quintessential alt rock, not just autistic Sheryl Crow. Forced to listen to the legions of similar artists from this era, I'd sooner hear Liz Phair's music than Lucinda Williams. I suppose it doesn't need to be said, but this is one of the albums that make me feel temporarily deflated and cynical about 1001 Best Albums. Like why am I hearing Lucinda Williams before any other 90s women musicians? Surely there are enough albums from Lauryn Hill, Mariah Carey, No Doubt, Sonic Youth, and dozens more, that bump out Lucinda Williams. Oh, I just wiki-ed her, I guess she's pretty prolific. Sorry, she just sounds like a silly goose to me.
Bit repetitive etc for me
This is #day52 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... it's a cold gloomy Sunday afternoon in late September... The artwork looks comfortingly promising, but, sadly, this is where it all ends. Underneath is some low-information country with pretty lame lyrics and a horrid delivery to boot. I would never even choose this as a background. Actually, I think playing music as a background is disrespectful toward the music itself. But this is not music. An album to listen to before you die? That's not even funny. How about joining the company of those 1 out of 5, and never hearing it again? Looking forward to #day53.
Nicht meine Richtung
Straight garbage. Another reminder a stunning amount of people fuckin love boring uninspired modern country.
Her voice is just... kind of annoying, and the songs sound too repetitive for too long. Can't do it. DNF.
Middle of the road 90s country is not for me
sounds like out of tune Alanis Morrisette
I tried to give this a chance but I really didn’t like it. It was a chore to get through. Not for me. Take your Sheryl Crow-Taylor swift-shania Twain coded white girl music and ram it up your box.
This was somehow annoying. She slurs the words like a drunk, the whole album was half the time complaining, half the time about some random towns and cities down south. The music is generic country. No idea how the high praise and the place on this list are justified.
Not a fan.
1 extremely generic and boring. Also hate how she slurs all of her words
Ugh, this album is depressing and really whiney. Big nope for me. Somehow, I suffered through the entire album. This is the thing I feared the most doing this project: an album that is horrible and only added to the list because they need 1001 of them. Makes me wonder if the curator of the list is some how related to this performer and included her out of pity. Man, I really dislike this album. Wish I could give negative stars.
Didn't finish it.
Not very nice to listen to, definitely well below par
I think I've heard of Lucinda Williams before, but I didn't think I was familiar with any of her music. After a little bit of reading, it turns out I know her song "Passionate Kisses," but I'm not sure if I grew up hearing her version or Mary Chapin Carpenter's. Regardless, I'm pretty picky about my country music, so this was going to be a coin flip heading into this album, but at least it's not Post-9/11 Country. I thought this album was a dud. The vocals and music weren't that great, and the lyrics felt completely uninspired. This album felt like someone looked up a bunch of cities and stereotypical southern things and just tried to write songs by repeating things like "Jackson" and "screen door," and hoping that it would land with people. And apparently it landed with quite a few people. Enough people to win a Grammy. The professional reviews that I read over said that the songs on here were great storytelling, and that they build to crushingly sad conclusions. Maybe they do, but I was so disengaged that I couldn't find one interesting thing to latch on to keep my interest on this album. As completely forgettable as this album was, at least it wasn't Pere Ubu's Dub Housing bad.
I was expecting something different but it ended up being just the old country-based American music that I must hear before die, even not knowing why.
Meh
Very very boring. Country meets over compressed late 90s production. Yaaaawn
Struggling to picture the type of person who would listen to stuff like this. An absolute no from me. 1/5
Just not my thing at all and I don’t think I will never willingly listen to this ever again. 1.5/5
Why oh why is country rock a thing? Unimaginative songs with twangy guitar
western pop. not my thing.
Lacklustre in every sense, lyrically, melodically. 3
Car Wheels On A Gravel Road = Nails On A Chalkboard
Blah. Makes me cring to think of the albums that didn't make it on the list because they chose to put this on on instead
The music is just as unmotivated as the singing.
No thanks
alt country dross
Gear: Meze 109 PRO Mix: bitte nich Musik: 🤠🤮 Wertung: 🐎/5
I have to own that I’m not a big fan of country music, but even by country standards I did not like this album. I found it very boring. With very few exceptions, every song sounded the same. I also found her vocals to be very annoying. It sounded more like whining than singing. I would choose to not ever listen to this album again.
First listen Saved 1/13 Top track: Can't Let Go
Not into country…but was fine
Not the worst country I've heard but still not for me
not a country fan at all, and this album did nothing to change that.
1 ster
Wenig interessanter Country Rock
I mean does anyone genuinely listen to this? It's so bad I have to believe it's a parody. Bad basic guitar music and horrific vocals, christ even the name is good ol boy. Even the font looks like it was done by a 12 year olds first attempt. Quite possibly the worst album on this entire list.
Boring
A bit confused as to why it’s on this list tbh
I don’t do country. Too American. I’ll listen to their country shit when they learn to morris dance
What a thrilling reinterpretation of the country genre, really shook things up here.
I hate country fucking hell
production on this is offensively annoying, thought I was exempt from the “I listen to everything except country” but turns out I’m not this was painful to get through. no more 90s Americana please. only song I liked: right in time
This album is kinda boring. I didn't really care for any of the songs except for Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. All the other songs were putting me to sleep or just went in one ear and out the other. Favorite song: Car Wheels on a Gravel Road Worst song: Joy
So, so dull and repetitive
Didn’t like the vocalist at all
made me feel like i was in an episode of friends. or purgatory as its usually called.
No thanks
What an awful album. I suffered through it.
I tried to be objective it's really not my sort of music. It wa professionally produced tinnitus.
Nope. Not for me.
Ein außergewöhnlicher Tiefpunkt was Ideenleere und Vermeidung jeglicher Kreativität angeht. Unterirdisch. Ich bin fassungslos. Ganz und gar nicht hörenswert.
This sounds alarmingly like it might be country. This is country. This is also awful. Repetitive steel gee-taws, raspy voice, I'm really struggling to find anything to redeem this album. OK, we've got to "Joy" now, and I quite like the opening of this track. Until she starts singing, and I don't like it anymore. The more bluesy guitar is a blessed relief, but these lyrics are samey, pointless and thoroughly unengaging. This is gonna be a one-star from me, fam.
Absolute shite.
Easily the worst album on this list so far.
I dunno, I got 4 songs in and, just, couldn't. be. bothered. Not a fan of country. Trying to keep an open mind here. But I don't understand why this is here.
Bit depressing, not too tuneful
The album cover looks sinister and the music was tormenting.
Dull dull dull dull dull !
Country music, sounds a bit like Sheryl Crow and just sings about what she found in her yard by the look of it.
Not for me.
Ehhhh, its country music, I don't like country music, this was always going to be a struggle for me if I had to pick a highlight it would have been can't let go but unlikely I will ever listen to again
Joyless barrage of dull meanderings; lyrically and musically as barren as a gravel road 1.3
Beklager.
👎
had it on in the background and did absolutely nothing for me. Bland, boring.
Why.
ne come on - 1
Poor man’s Sheryl crow
It's very country. And though the lyrics are nice, I have trouble enjoying country music. Especially while I'm working. I'm glad it's on here though because I don't like the fact that my musical taste fully excludes any country music.
Was a huge fan of this "Plastic Soul" album during my Bowie phase (I spent the lion's share of my graduation gift money on his albums). This one made him something of a favored son in Philly which made it kind of special when I saw him twice there on his "farewell" tour. "They've cleaned up the Italian Market!" he shouted from the stage. Favorite is Win. Cassette flip side was tvc15 I believe.
