Saved from a 1 by Joy.

Pretty unassuming, not much to report

Not for me. Only listened to half

Inoffensive and unexceptional country music

straight down the middle of that gravel road

THIS was 98th on Rolling Stone’s top 500 albums?! Ever take a drink of a soda and it’s flat? I mean it’s not spit it out awful but you’re probably not going to take more than a couple sips. This album was a flat soda…for me.

It's fine, but no more. 2\5

yawnnnnnnnnn

2/5 Too slow and sad

Didn’t mind this, but it feels like I have been here before and is an update of a style from another time. Perhaps it’s timeless, but I didn’t feel it was anything new. Can’t Let Go jumped out from this set, maybe because it’s a bit more rocky / angry, but generally, this was a pleasant enough backdrop to doing other stuff and not much more.

A little too twee and country-fied for my liking.

I've heard of Lucinda Williams by only by reputation. I am expecting twangy music and quality, transporting lyrics. First song does not disappoint. I guess you'd have to call "Right in Time" sex positive? Certainly paints a picture. The next song is just kind of ok. And it goes downhill from there, really. By the time I got to Greenville and Joy I was actively annoyed with this album. The best songs beyond the first track were Can't Let Go. But they weren't enough to bring the album into overall "good" territory. Maybe my expectations were set too high but I just wasn't impressed.

I know it's not true, but she sounds like a discount Sheryl Crow. Generic.

Not really my kind of thing. I couldn't get to grips with it at all. At points I thought I was almost enjoying it, and then some vocal twang or another jolted me back out of it.

Best Song: Can't Let Go. Nice rolling rhythm. Reminds of me of KT Tunstall's modern (and extremely popular) "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree." Worst Song: Concrete And Barbed Wire. Whatever cleverness the title might have had was entirely wrung out by the excessive repetition of the phrase. Overall: She has a sweet voice, but I just find the music inoffensively bland.

Fyrirsjáanlegt. Litlaust.

Rather dull, generic sounding but inoffensively so

Generic middle of the road Americana country music, not terrible, just uninteresting.

1998 - Americana; alternative country

not bad

Sounds like Chrissie Hynde, interesting voice, more Americana than country. Not normally my cup of tea but this was very well done.

2/5 I didn’t hate this album just found it rather boring. Some of the songs on the second half of the album pick up but I found myself wondering when most of them were going to end. I’m a bit surprised this album is as acclaimed as it is, I just don’t see what is so unique about it personally. Maybe it needs another listen but I’m not sure if I’ll give it that.

Trying to find what is special about this album. I find her voice a bity whiney and the music very ordinary. "Can't Let Go" is fun. Songs like "Greenville" and "Jackson" are just so sleepy and twangy that they were hard to get through. Generous rating of 2 stars

Sounds like depressed Sheryl Crow. I couldn't connect to it. Exception: "Can't Let Go" has some actual energy and was a great listen.

Dosadno malo Al sviđa mi se ponovo country štih hahah

Lost interest. Sounded basic. Lyrics were supposed to be the highlight but again, basic.

Boring

Started off hating it but by the end it slightly won me over.

Right In Time, Car Wheels On A Gravel Road, 2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten.

Not a fan of this one either. The literals lyricism is way too literal.

ehh lyssna lite

This was a weird one for me. I liked the voice, I liked the music but I found the overall thing a bit lacking, the lyrics were simple and I couldn't forgive naming a track 2 Kool 2 B 4-Gotten. It sounded a bit like if you told an AI to write a country/Americana album. It was like a much cheaper version of Sheryl Crow (who I am very upset to see isn't on this list at all, so now I'm in a bad mood).

some old schoolish country

69. As mãos de Deus?!?!?! MotA: 2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten "Not a day goes by I don't think about you / You left your mark on me it's permanent a tattoo"

Not bad

Cool vibe not really my thing

Not really something I'd listen to

A struggle

It was ok, listened to it while I did housework

For country, it was a little more bearable than I expected. The main singer has a nice voice, but I don't like when the guy singer joins in.

The more folky, bluesy songs were nice, but the country songs bring it down to a 2

Good but didn't blow me away

I acknowledge the quality, but this is not my thing.

I think it's trite and over rated

Not great Country

Meh. Kind of sounds like female Wilco. Not bad, I can see why people would like this but it's for me. Made it about halfway through and started to like it... 2.5

Not really my type of music, but I liked the gritty ness and the guitar.

I guess it's all right. most songs give me a sheryl crow wibe, but with twangy guitars. the hit (can't let go) is ok. not my thing, but it's not terrible either

Not for me

Eh, I didn’t like her singer-songwriter country sound that much.

Meh. Bäst: Can't let go & Joy

Not great

Better than most country, but got a little repetitive for me. Would be a nice driving album though.

Really samey and boring if I’m honest. Something about southern twang singing irritates me but I love Southern accented rapping, not quite sure why

Can’t help feeling like all just sounds super generic. It wasn’t even that I disliked it, I just found it boring

I'm not really a fan of Country Music. The album was ok.

Absolutely not.

Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: None Dreadfully cliché. Loathsome. Miserable. I have such a hard time attempting to review Country music objectively; I just have such a visceral negative reaction to nearly all of it. This album just never sounds genuine. So, instead, I will just quote Lucinda Williams: "The album was a total clusterfuck" -Lucinda Williams.

Honestly the biggest head scratcher so far. I might have to buy this book to understand why in the world anyone would put this on the list. I sincerely don't get it.

Listening to actual car wheels on a gravel road would have been more enjoyable. Hell, doing cartwheels on a gravel road would have been more enjoyable.

Car wheels on a gravel road? More like nails on a chalkboard.

Damn, what a rough production. Insane compression on the lead guitar - bruh it already had too much twang, y'all don't need to pump that. Janky tuning on the lead vocal. We know auto-tune existed at this juncture, as did digital recording - no excuse not to run another take or touch up the flats. A knock-on effect of this is the vocals sound so sleepy and uninspired. The few words I could make out simply have no execution behind them. It sounds like a substitute teacher blindly stumbling through prewritten lecture slides. Awkward. The half-ass production doesn't do anything to polish the turd either. It's so dry and unrefined that I would believe if you told me these were the guide tracks. The leads sound unfinished. Gives uncool, unsexy Sheryl Crow at times, who at that barely makes the cut for interesting listens herself. Who comes up with this shit? --- Here's the critic's view, it's a laugh. I feel the need to punctuate it: > Lucinda Williams makes this whole music thing seem so simple: Indeed, it sounds simple as shit. > Write in plain language about the people and places that crowd your memory; add subtle flavors of a mandolin here, a Dobro there, perhaps an accordion or slide guitar; above all, sing as honestly and naturally as you can. "...as you can". Makes no objective comment about her aptitude, which I find sorely lacking. There's nothing subtle about this. > Of course, it took her six years to achieve this simplicity, Fucking LOL, she has six years of work behind this?? Can we discuss the grand irony of working this hard to sound like you don't give enough of a fuck to work hard? > an amazing achievement considering the number of knobs that were turned. I can't tell if this refers to the amount of production that went into this album. If so, you're delusional bro. It sounds half-baked. > Her exquisite voice moans and groans and slips and slides—she delivers a polished tone in a coarse manner. Agree to disagree, I guess. I'd use the terms "wails aimlessly", and I find nothing coarse nor polished about any of this. > On the superb "Concrete and Barbed Wire," oof, rough take choom. Cringe-worthy lyrics and execution on this cut, not to mention the hammed-up southern accent. > soft acoustic guitars are punctuated by electric slide, accordion, mandolin, and Steve Earle's harmony. At this point I think we listened to different releases. Nothing soft about this, aside from the attempt. > Williams's deeply personal stories are matched with bluesy rumbles, raunchy grooves, and plaintive whispers. May I suggest some material with raunchy grooves, so you use that descriptor accurately in the future. > The entire Deep South is reduced to a sleepy small town filled with ex-lovers, dive bars, and endless gravel roads. Surprisingly I somewhat agree. This album distills the entire Deep South down to its shamelessly uncouth, awkward, ignorant, lame, backwater stereotype. Unfortunately, this strikes deeply against the elegance and sophistication that Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson have demonstrated country music can embody. Bless your heart, Lucinda Williams.

Her voice hurts my ears. Sounds like a fake southern drawl, over emphasized and painful to hear. 1.0

This was pretty horrible. I didn’t enjoy anything about this at all really. It sounds like she thinks she is being edgy, but this is the epitome of bland. None of my business.

Okay now I'm a bit done with southern influenced stuff. I like "90s woman rock" but would kinda just prefer to listen to Alanis Morissette.

That was easily one of the most boring albums on the project. Calling it alternative does seem funny. It was interesting reading that this was the beginning of the Americana genre. I always associate much older songs with that genre so nice to learn that. But ya this was an absolute chore to listen to. Rating: 1.3

This album really showcases how musical acts build off of each other. The Wikipedia article says there were guest appearances by Emmylou Harris (an artist I’ve rated 1 star) and Steve Earle (an artist I’ve rated 1 star). So by this logic this album is statistically likely to be 1 star. And it is, because it’s another bland and forgettable modern country album that acts like being drunken and uncivil is somehow a charming and desirable trait. Dreadful. Not worth the time.

Boring, weird singing. I never liked this Emmy Lou Harris style music of hardly any choruses.

i must not like country or something

What the hell is this album doing in this selection? It’s just cheap.

I’m not really sure why this record is on the list? No part is noteworthy. Aggressively horrendous lyrics. Average instrumentation, vocals are pretty dull, no real dynamics to the record, and no real risks taken. Joy may be the worst song I’ve heard yet on this list. I think you could substitute any studio singer and band in Nashville and you could get the exact same generic pop country sound. I do actually like country from this era, but not sure why this is the representation. This record absolutely blows. 1/5

Nope, not doing this.

Concrete and barbed wire. The album is as exciting as that. Monotonous droning with little redeeming features. Can't Let Go the only song with any excitement, and that blends in to generic country-blues-pop.

Mildly inoffensive, largely forgettable, one decent tune. Onto the next.

Tried to like it but ... no. Better singing would have helped a good bit. Some variation would have helped another bit. At times I was reminded of Sheryl Crow's first two albums. But those are superior in every way: songwriting, singing, production ... I read it is praised for the lyrics. What? As in "sing" the title at the end of every verse, then repeat it a couple of times as a chorus? Every song, it seems! Not for me. Gave up after five tracks.

everything I hate about pop country, right down to the exaggerated accent

Not for me. Sappy country sounding god music has its place I suppose.

Really boring and generic

Not for me. Skipped through wasn't a fan

boring

Not for me. 1/5

Very uninspired and pretty grating to be honest. Pseudo country to fall asleep to.

Did not finish.

This is like a really boring version of Sheryl Crowe.....or vice versa. Boring, generic country-pop.

Most of this album is absolutely unlistenable. Lyrically repetitive to the point of insanity, unnecessary vocal affectation of country twang, and awful simplistic guitar. But then you get to the final track Jackson, which has a calming Baptist hymnal feel to it which is quite beautiful. Not enough to save this album but still.

I LIKE (SOME) COUNTRY MUSIC! This was the most bland, formulaic, repetitive, pap that helps me understand why people hate it. If you want to hear some good contemporary country music try Laura Cantrell, Eilen Jewell, Jason Hawk Harris, Sarah Shook or Sturgill Stimpson

I hated this. I found nothing to like.

No thank you. I don’t generally enjoy Country music and this album had zero redeeming features. I suppose it was well recorded. 1/5

Country = 1 star

This was not good. The production felt overly processed and the singing felt forced. Must have been a slow year for good albums in 1998?

God this was boring

Man, do I hate the singing on this. So affected and lazy-sounding that any enjoyment I might have gotten out of the songs is ruined once she starts singing.

This feels so fake to me

This feels so fake to me

Folk, 56eme album + Country, 31eme album =>1/5

"Greenville" broke me. Awful.

It's the female equivalent of dad rock. Mum folk/country. Consequently gets exactly the same rating.

DUUUUUUUUUUULLLLLLLLLLLL!

A FIVE MINUTE meandering track around listing place names in Louisiana (I think, not a native) her ex or whatever used to drive to like there is some significant symbollogy or complex trauma behind them only to then reveal that - and this might sound utterly incredible to you, dear reader - he goes there because he likes it. Why even write songs if you are so utterly devoid of any meaningful thing to say. Music as empty, superficial and meaningless as its lyrics

Bland, generic country

Catchy and shit.

I don't want to say this is awful, but to me, this is awful. Mid music, mid vocals. It must be about the lyrics or something.

Sounds like temu Cheryl Crow. Respect her voice and writing. Not my cup of tea.

I tried to give this a chance, I really did. I made it to "Concrete and Barbed Wire" and gave up. Just not for me at all.

I really don't care for country music. This album did not change my mind.

This is somehow the most generic thing I have ever heard while also sounding like cats being strangled. This may be the most grating record I have heard.

Country.. :S Muy soso

It’s hard to see how Car Wheels on a Gravel Road by Lucinda Williams earned a place on such a prestigious list as 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. To my ears, this is average, formulaic modern country. From the very first track, you know exactly what’s coming — and the next dozen songs stick to the same formula. Williams has a pleasant voice, but the songwriting feels forgettable, with nothing that truly grabs you. I can’t help but think there are stronger albums in this genre that deserve the spot more. Favourite tracks: “Can’t Let Go,” “Joy,” and “Still I Long for Your Kiss” — a little more up-tempo and lively compared to the rest of the album. Least favourite track: Honestly, most of them could fit here; the record felt basic and uninspired overall. Album artwork: Simple yet appealing.

osittain hurmaava musiikki revitään palasiksi heti kuin lucinda kulta alkaa laulamaan ja ääntää asiat oudosti. omgggg joo uskomaton nostalgia fiilis kun auto renkaat sora tiellä waaaauu minkälaisia kuvia tulee mieleen tästä waaaaauuu waaaauuutssiiii. ei ison kaupungin asfalttikulkijat ymmärrä fiilistä ymmärrä tätä fiilistä millään tajua et-tajuu-viela ei ei ei!! dark forest = urbans scared to go into (just ask). nähnykkään luontoa vittu ja haistakaaa paSKAAA HAISTAKAA PASKAA JOSE T LUONTOA NÄHNYYYt. kaupunkilaiset... kaupungi city folk city folk. we put on zz top, and turn them up real loud.. ja siihen lyriikkaan lähti armahdustähti pois. right in time

At last count, I had around 2,000 albums in my collection, which is by no means a lot when it comes to record collections, but I am pretty sure each one of those 2,000 is objectively more "essential" than this. Structurally, lyrically, melodically, and harmonically uninspired - never mind the gravel road, this album only serves to invoke the figurative road music of this kind clings desperately to the middle of. Dull.

Not a fan of folk.

country music is so bad

This might rival Gold by Ryan Adams as the most boring album I’ve had so far. It was completely unremarkable in every way. Seriously I’m writing this and I cannot remember anything about this album.

Country.

Not a country fan to begin with, and liked this less than I was hoping. The title track is repetitive in the worst way possible. The instruments can't save this one.

Why is this in this list, I cannot understand. Didn't even have a stamina to listen this through.

Bland music, boring vocalist who is sounding mudane, music is country/folk... what's there to like?! I'm kind of weirded out by this album being on this list.

Not for me at all. So boring.

Really tried to listen to this and her voice is nice but country music is just too formulaic for me

Found this to be pretty generic folk/country. Something I'm not a big fan. She sounds s bit like Cheryl Crowe, but not really a fan of hers either. Think the biggest thrill from this album was seeing Steve Earle's name associated with the album. She's has a nice voice, but other than that, nothing excited me about this album. The .5 is for Earle. 1.5

Soft-folk/country. Not unpleasant but not my kind of music. Nothing here for me.

Sheryl Crow at home

Not my thing!

Incredibly soporific and middle-of-the-road. Her voice is whiny. Uses the exact same phrasing, rhythm, tempo, and instrumentation for over half the songs on the album. Mentions angels a lot. Sounds like a free demo.

Lucinda, I'm sorry nobody told you this any sooner, but you cannot sing.

A good song

Made it halfway through song 6 - couldn’t take it any more. Awful voice, dull as dirt.

No shot I'm getting through this one Will I listen to again: 0%

Boring generic and forgettable

Fucking awful

That was painful to listen to

Dear God please let this end. I am not enjoying this. I do not like her voice. The instrumentals are okay. I'm sure this is for someone, but not for me. It probably should be at 2, but I'm not having a good time so here is my first 1 out of 5 stars.

As Randy Jackson once said "Yeah, that's gonna be a no from me, dawg"

This was one of those albums my parents insisted on buying and listening to on repeat, intent on believing it was quintessential alt rock, not just autistic Sheryl Crow. Forced to listen to the legions of similar artists from this era, I'd sooner hear Liz Phair's music than Lucinda Williams. I suppose it doesn't need to be said, but this is one of the albums that make me feel temporarily deflated and cynical about 1001 Best Albums. Like why am I hearing Lucinda Williams before any other 90s women musicians? Surely there are enough albums from Lauryn Hill, Mariah Carey, No Doubt, Sonic Youth, and dozens more, that bump out Lucinda Williams. Oh, I just wiki-ed her, I guess she's pretty prolific. Sorry, she just sounds like a silly goose to me.

Bit repetitive etc for me

This is #day52 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... it's a cold gloomy Sunday afternoon in late September... The artwork looks comfortingly promising, but, sadly, this is where it all ends. Underneath is some low-information country with pretty lame lyrics and a horrid delivery to boot. I would never even choose this as a background. Actually, I think playing music as a background is disrespectful toward the music itself. But this is not music. An album to listen to before you die? That's not even funny. How about joining the company of those 1 out of 5, and never hearing it again? Looking forward to #day53.

Nicht meine Richtung

Straight garbage. Another reminder a stunning amount of people fuckin love boring uninspired modern country.

Her voice is just... kind of annoying, and the songs sound too repetitive for too long. Can't do it. DNF.

Middle of the road 90s country is not for me

sounds like out of tune Alanis Morrisette

I tried to give this a chance but I really didn’t like it. It was a chore to get through. Not for me. Take your Sheryl Crow-Taylor swift-shania Twain coded white girl music and ram it up your box.

This was somehow annoying. She slurs the words like a drunk, the whole album was half the time complaining, half the time about some random towns and cities down south. The music is generic country. No idea how the high praise and the place on this list are justified.

Not a fan.

1 extremely generic and boring. Also hate how she slurs all of her words

Ugh, this album is depressing and really whiney. Big nope for me. Somehow, I suffered through the entire album. This is the thing I feared the most doing this project: an album that is horrible and only added to the list because they need 1001 of them. Makes me wonder if the curator of the list is some how related to this performer and included her out of pity. Man, I really dislike this album. Wish I could give negative stars.

Didn't finish it.

Not very nice to listen to, definitely well below par

I think I've heard of Lucinda Williams before, but I didn't think I was familiar with any of her music. After a little bit of reading, it turns out I know her song "Passionate Kisses," but I'm not sure if I grew up hearing her version or Mary Chapin Carpenter's. Regardless, I'm pretty picky about my country music, so this was going to be a coin flip heading into this album, but at least it's not Post-9/11 Country. I thought this album was a dud. The vocals and music weren't that great, and the lyrics felt completely uninspired. This album felt like someone looked up a bunch of cities and stereotypical southern things and just tried to write songs by repeating things like "Jackson" and "screen door," and hoping that it would land with people. And apparently it landed with quite a few people. Enough people to win a Grammy. The professional reviews that I read over said that the songs on here were great storytelling, and that they build to crushingly sad conclusions. Maybe they do, but I was so disengaged that I couldn't find one interesting thing to latch on to keep my interest on this album. As completely forgettable as this album was, at least it wasn't Pere Ubu's Dub Housing bad.

I was expecting something different but it ended up being just the old country-based American music that I must hear before die, even not knowing why.

Very very boring. Country meets over compressed late 90s production. Yaaaawn

Struggling to picture the type of person who would listen to stuff like this. An absolute no from me. 1/5

Just not my thing at all and I don’t think I will never willingly listen to this ever again. 1.5/5

Why oh why is country rock a thing? Unimaginative songs with twangy guitar

western pop. not my thing.

Lacklustre in every sense, lyrically, melodically. 3

Car Wheels On A Gravel Road = Nails On A Chalkboard

Blah. Makes me cring to think of the albums that didn't make it on the list because they chose to put this on on instead

The music is just as unmotivated as the singing.

No thanks

alt country dross

Gear: Meze 109 PRO Mix: bitte nich Musik: 🤠🤮 Wertung: 🐎/5

I have to own that I’m not a big fan of country music, but even by country standards I did not like this album. I found it very boring. With very few exceptions, every song sounded the same. I also found her vocals to be very annoying. It sounded more like whining than singing. I would choose to not ever listen to this album again.

First listen Saved 1/13 Top track: Can't Let Go

Not into country…but was fine

Not the worst country I've heard but still not for me

not a country fan at all, and this album did nothing to change that.

1 ster

Wenig interessanter Country Rock

I mean does anyone genuinely listen to this? It's so bad I have to believe it's a parody. Bad basic guitar music and horrific vocals, christ even the name is good ol boy. Even the font looks like it was done by a 12 year olds first attempt. Quite possibly the worst album on this entire list.

Boring

A bit confused as to why it’s on this list tbh

I don’t do country. Too American. I’ll listen to their country shit when they learn to morris dance

What a thrilling reinterpretation of the country genre, really shook things up here.

I hate country fucking hell

production on this is offensively annoying, thought I was exempt from the “I listen to everything except country” but turns out I’m not this was painful to get through. no more 90s Americana please. only song I liked: right in time

This album is kinda boring. I didn't really care for any of the songs except for Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. All the other songs were putting me to sleep or just went in one ear and out the other. Favorite song: Car Wheels on a Gravel Road Worst song: Joy

So, so dull and repetitive

Didn’t like the vocalist at all

made me feel like i was in an episode of friends. or purgatory as its usually called.

No thanks

What an awful album. I suffered through it.

I tried to be objective it's really not my sort of music. It wa professionally produced tinnitus.

Nope. Not for me.

Ein außergewöhnlicher Tiefpunkt was Ideenleere und Vermeidung jeglicher Kreativität angeht. Unterirdisch. Ich bin fassungslos. Ganz und gar nicht hörenswert.

This sounds alarmingly like it might be country. This is country. This is also awful. Repetitive steel gee-taws, raspy voice, I'm really struggling to find anything to redeem this album. OK, we've got to "Joy" now, and I quite like the opening of this track. Until she starts singing, and I don't like it anymore. The more bluesy guitar is a blessed relief, but these lyrics are samey, pointless and thoroughly unengaging. This is gonna be a one-star from me, fam.

Absolute shite.

Easily the worst album on this list so far.

I dunno, I got 4 songs in and, just, couldn't. be. bothered. Not a fan of country. Trying to keep an open mind here. But I don't understand why this is here.

Bit depressing, not too tuneful

The album cover looks sinister and the music was tormenting.

Dull dull dull dull dull !

Country music, sounds a bit like Sheryl Crow and just sings about what she found in her yard by the look of it.

Not for me.

Ehhhh, its country music, I don't like country music, this was always going to be a struggle for me if I had to pick a highlight it would have been can't let go but unlikely I will ever listen to again

Joyless barrage of dull meanderings; lyrically and musically as barren as a gravel road 1.3

Beklager.

had it on in the background and did absolutely nothing for me. Bland, boring.

ne come on - 1

Poor man’s Sheryl crow

It's very country. And though the lyrics are nice, I have trouble enjoying country music. Especially while I'm working. I'm glad it's on here though because I don't like the fact that my musical taste fully excludes any country music.

Was a huge fan of this "Plastic Soul" album during my Bowie phase (I spent the lion's share of my graduation gift money on his albums). This one made him something of a favored son in Philly which made it kind of special when I saw him twice there on his "farewell" tour. "They've cleaned up the Italian Market!" he shouted from the stage. Favorite is Win. Cassette flip side was tvc15 I believe.
