I had never heard any of these Foo Fighters songs before and never care to hear them again
I really never thought the drummer from Nirvana was going to be the one with a 3 decade music career.
Bloody love the Foo Fighters. Easy 5 stars.
I remember when this album came out. It was such a big deal. The drummer of Nirvana had released an album. I went out and bought the CD as soon as possible. To learn that Grohl wrote and recorded the entire thing himself as a way to recover from his friend's suicide, it makes it that much more impactful. Is it Foo Fighters best album? No. But it's history and impact definitely deserve to be celebrated. For all the kids that were heartbroken by Kurt's suicide, this album holds a special place in our hearts.
Solid indie rock album from a mid 2000s staple
Kinda crazy that he recorded the whole thing on his own. Not a big foo fighters fan, definitely an “every song sounds the same” band for me.
Very impressive to think this is a one man project! Pretty cool songs, most of which I've been jamming for a long while now. Dave Grohl laid a great solid foundation for the years to come for this band. Great album! Favorite lyrics: - I'll stick around and learn from all that came from it. - Couldn't find a way to you. Seems that's all I ever do. - Where have all the wishes gone? Now that all of that is done. Wish I would've felt I'd won for once. Not really a fan of Foo Fighters but this ay bad. I was exhausted by that note.
Although it didn't hit the full on fat riff Friday energy I expected/hoped for today this is still some seriously good straight up rock music. That guitar tone is soo so clean. Loses a star for getting a bit repetitive on side B. Needed way more All the Cows to keep things interesting. Watershed is a pretty powerhouse track, very derivative (in a good way), just in case you weren't sure if they tick the required rock boxes. Exhausted is an excellent closer and great example of the clean guitar tone, Good Grief was the other. On reflection it might now be repetitive as such, just includes a couple of filler tracks that ultimately disrupt the energy of it all.
It often sounds like "generic rock" but there's some very solid songs on here. I also like the story behind the album. 3.5/5

Stoked was an understatement when I saw this album pop up! Although it’s not my favourite Foos album, there is something to be said about Dave Grohls musical genius, and the fact that this is ALL him!! All the instruments, all the singing and writing…he is a so important to our generation of music. It only gets better from this album on…. Listen again: Absolutely Purchase for my collection: Maybe, if it was cheap. Favourite Song: For All The Cows, but Alone and Easy Target comes close as an homage to the first Big Shiny Tunes album which was pretty much my intro to mainstream rock. Worst Song: Exhausted- the static sound drives me nuts

It's all Dave Grohl playing everything! My favorite Foo Fighters album.
Is this the best FF album? No. Context is so important with this album though. Dave Grohl was the drummer for a little band called Nirvana. They represented a generation that saw right through the glam of the 80’s. A year prior to the release of this album Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of Nirvana, had died by suicide. This was a pivotal time for Mr. Grohl and would catapult him from being a star to the closest thing one can get to being a living god of rock music. He recorded this album himself, and admits he sees it as more of a demo. Shades of Nirvana are all over this album, but also showcases his punk and metal side.
I've always found them a bit dull, some good songs here and there but I just don't know why they are regarded as being great

Love Dave Grohl as a great guy but never been a big Foo Fighters fan. Still an interesting album. Not hard to see the Nirvana influence on this music-as-therapy recording. Everyone should read his book, he’s also an enjoyable storyteller.

Not nearly the classic its follow up is. Still. You can hear the grumblings of a change in sound as far as alternative music. Everything here is decent to good with a monster early track at the center as it’s single.
A very classic 90s rock album. Almost sounds proto-Foo Fighters now, as I feel like they matured a lot after this.
Not quite as awful as I thought it would be.
It’s aight I guess. Was a little intrigued by it being the bridge from the grunge era, and the fact that Grohl did everything on it. But I just wasn’t hooked.
A few classics and a mix of other stuff that lives up to their earlier, somewhat 'softer' sound to me. 4.5

Some schoolmates and I once went on a joy ride during high school one summer night and discussed our favourite music. Apparently at one point I said “well everyone loves a bit of Foo Fighters” It’s refreshing to hear this album again after so long, especially looking back from 2023 where most music is so digital and heavily edited and sampled, to get that usable TikTok soundbite. Basically a Dave Grohl vehicle (he played all the instruments) it’s quite stripped down in a way that’s understandable as someone coming from a 3 piece grunge band. It has the same ingredients to Nirvana (loud distorted guitars, pounding drums, quiet loud structure) yet so different, decidedly sunnier and more pop. Still, it’s got that charming rough around the edges and a bit more raw compared to the stadium rock polish they would be so famous in later albums. What I noticed this time is how the vocals are a little bit buried in the mix. I forgot how much I used to enjoy just lying back and letting a wall of crunchy distorted guitar and loud drums wash over me. Steak and potato rock for sure, but nothing wrong with that.

Actually really enjoyed the experience of listening to this with the knowledge of what comes later. Like a little silly fun album. Apparently he wrote the lyrics twenty mins before recording, love it. Just dudes being bros making some songs. Anyway, shouldn't be on this list.

Starts with 3 BANGERS! This Nirvana demo is dope! He's really trying to find himself and his sound, it's a solid record and a sign of what's to come but feels more like a demo than a complete album. More like an EP with lots of filler

This album has been in my life since 1995 and I have such great memories with it. I love every track. It’s probably the only Foo Fighters album that I do love actually.
More low key queens of the Stone Age with better lyrics. I liked it.

Solid album, but a weird choice for what I believe is the only Foo Fighters album on the list. I would say that their next handful of albums, maybe even up to 6 or 7, are better than this one. The Colour and The Shape is almost unquestionably MUCH better than this album. Go listen to that one instead if you're just looking for a great Foo Fighters album.

I love FF, but I think this should be considered as a demo, not an album. it is noisy and i have the feeling that it is not finished. (Almost) all the other FF albums are better.
I recently saw someone call Foo Fighters "surprisingly safe radio rock" which I assume stems from the prior band Dave Grohl was apart of sounding not too similar to what Foo Fighters outputs. However, I would say it makes complete sense if you look at the music Grohl actually chooses to engage with. He may play the drums more intensely than the average band, but the man cried about the newest ABBA album, so I think he's a bit more sensitive than just "the heavy drummer should only make the heavy music". I know sensitive is a silly word to use, but you can kind of feel it here, since this album was pretty much solely made with the intention of being a sort of therapy after Kurt Cobain's passing. I think later Foo Fighters could get away with being called generic rock, but I think there's enough here for this to seem like a genuine effort. Having songs like "Weenie Beenie" sound the way they do gives off a Nirvana-esque energy, and having something like For All the Cows just two songs later, which is a completely different style tells me it's at least not all generic. I will admit there are some songs here that go in one ear and out the other, but I think this is more than just a pay check trying to be made.

Pretty uninteresting but at the same time fun?
This album is amaaazzinnngg, I fucking loved it. I love Foo Fighters and was super excited when this album came up. I actually hadn't heard any songs from this album before, until now. The often raw and emotional lyrics are so good and I'm a sucker for good grunge music. This is now one of my favorite albums for sure.
What a great, colorful, after-Nirvana debut which sometimes can be a bit too redundant regarding songwriting but in its best moments can also segue between poppy hymns and Post-rockish deconstructivsm. 3.5

While I loved Nirvana, I never really got into Foo Fighters. The hits are fun, but I've never really sat with the albums. This one was totally ok, not amazing, but fine. Glad Dave got out of his funk. Later material seems much better.
god damn. i just read the story about this album before listening to it. dave grohl seriously did these tracks all by himself? i mean obviously the versions on this cd are done by a full band, but during the original creation of these tracks he'd do every single instrument himself? running from room to room in the recording studio, hopping from drums to guitars to whatever else? making up random vocals 20 minutes before recording began and then just rolling with them? what an intense recording environment. makes sense though, since it was supposed to be just about dave's personal catharsis after losing kurt cobain and wasn't actually intended to be a mainstream musical project in any way. what an intimidating prelude. i am of course familiar with the foo fighters - have listened to them a bunch, although not as much as i could have. they were always my friend dave's thing more than they were my thing. and 'my friend dave' is not referring to dave grohl lmao. my actual irl friend, who is also coincidentally called dave. except thats not much of a coincidence at all because dave is like the most common men's name in the west. can't take a piss in the street without splashing some dude named dave. i've never listened to this particular album before. i mostly listened to the colour and the shape, and nothing left to lose. knowing the context of its recording, i can see why this is a little more rough around the edges than some of the later stuff, but you know what? i had a fantastic time with it. what i have surmised is that i really need to listen to the foo fighters more often. favourite track: big me
Many a night was spent listening to this gem, making you feel the angst of a still mourning Dave Grohl on his new pet project. I instantly fell in love and it's an affair that has lasted about half my life and will endure as one of the all time greatest albums. I can't name a favourite song as the songs belong in place as a whole, any removal or piecemeal consumption would create diminishment.
good, very rock, might have to circle back
rock music has never been my thing (at least in the traditional sense — art rock, chamber rock, and psychedelic rock have consistently displayed the ability to move me with their simultaneous scale and intimacy). Foo Fighters’ self titled debut, though richly crafted, does not at current seem to be the pure rock album to assuage (??) my predispositions (??). formed following the suicide of Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain, Foo Fighters (the work of fellow Nirvana colleague Dave Grohl) doesn’t manage to sustain the intensity or inventiveness of the works that birthed it, but is still something fairly neat all on its own. it aspires for a similar grunge leaning sound that turned Nirvana into a beast, but is also performed with a certain restrain that leaves its bite feeling weak. Grohl evokes great emotion with his voice though, and there are true gems to be found here: “Floaty” sounds like the sort of pop-rock that many a teenage girl-next-door would wield to masterful effect, and “Big Me” is rich with enough heart. not a record i see myself returning to much, but a good enough one nonetheless.

Might bey favourite Foo's album
This was good fun when it came out, though it's pretty much textbook inessential, doesn't belong in this list, that's for sure. One or two genuinely great songs dotted around the Foos' career (maybe not on this one though) , and Dave seems a lovely bloke. Nice to get the lyrics sheet and have it confirmed after this time that the lyrics to This is a Call are a completely random list of non-sequiters. Foo Fighters albums just got more and more inessential, but not bad, as they went along. They hit on that formula early and by god they opened the factory. Because of that, and this being the height of my Nirvana-fandom, this is the Foo Fighters album I'm fondest of. It also sounds the most like Nirvana (Easy Target, Weenie Beanie), which makes sense since most of the tracks were written back then. For All the Cows sounds like Green Day. But ultimately, it's still just good to average, perfectly serviceable rock. And when In Utero comes around it's clearly getting 5 stars, so as someone who likes this, you have to consider - is it really just one star better than this? No. Faves - X-Static, This is a Call, Alone + Easy Target.

A bit of nostalgia with this album. I was a big Foo Fighters fan back in middle and high school but have definitely fallen off over time. This is a really impressive debut album, especially as it was recorded in full by Dave Grohl. It's wild to me how this was released just a year after Nirvana ended, it feels like it could have been a decade and I would have loved to know how Nirvana fans at the time felt or expected from this album. I still really like this album but it's not one I listen to all the much anymore. Maybe I'll give some early FF another listen again though because of this exercise. Really solid songs throughout. Cool to hear what could've come from nirvana next, but sad to know it's missing someone. Good stuff, some songs gave that nirvana sound, while others showed a new chapter of what would become foo fighters sound with Dave at the helm. Some songs sound flat. Would love a remastere
Love it or hate it, this is an incredibly influential album both for it’s time and still today. Any song on this album can be thrown on at any time which makes it very versatile. The album itself isn’t making a very big statement as it’s the definition of garage band dad rock, but I found the whole thing entertaining and enjoyable. I liked it. 4/5

I respect this for what it is-- I didn't love it and don't need to return to it, but I have a lot of love and respect for Dave Grohl for making it.
Great album in “the story of grunge” historical/sentimental way, but lyrically very scattered and unintentional, admittedly so by Dave Grohl. Lastly, a rather poor recording quality.

I didn't realize the first Foo Fighters album was a one-man show with Dave Grohl playing all the instruments and vocals, quite a feat for a drummer from his fairly well-known previous band. With this in mind, this album is an impressive feat, it's solid from start to finish and the energy and urgency gives the record it's strength, quite the debut! I can't say I'm a Foo Fighters fan, but from what I've heard on this and their later releases, I can't say I don't like it. This is probably my favourite Foo Fighters album, but it's the only one close to being essential.

I like Dave Grohl as a drummer in Nirvana. As a one-man band, however, he is... impressive. The energy in Nirvana is here in its raw form. But let's be real, this is kinda bland. I understand why it can be cathartic after Cobain's death, but it sounded like grunge is lost and is finding a new direction here.
Great album, not as good as their later stuff imo, but a big favourite of mine in my late teens.

What a great record. Fun fact, Dave Grohl played all of the instruments on this record, so it’s basically a Dave Grohl solo record. Sure, it’s got the typical ‘90s alternative rock sound. But it’s mostly Nirvana songs that Dave wrote and Kurt never got a chance to record. It’s really a “what could’ve been” if Kurt was alive to record these songs.
I admire the origin story of this, Grohl working in relative secret to get out of the shadow of Cobain's tragic end. The product is very competent rock. The weaker point is the lyrics, muddy both in delivery (overlayered and effects-laden as they are) and content. I think later works from this band are stronger.
Foo Fighters are solid, dependable and you know just what you’re going to get. I admire what’s been done here and I like FF in general is long as there isn’t too much exposure. I think if I went to a gig I would just end up being bored. I can’t listen to a whole album without just thinking it’s a bit samey. Solid, dependable samey… and totally listenable, but better in small doses. This is no detraction from Dave Grohl being the nicest man in rock.

Just a good album. Nothing special
I've got to admit that I've tried this album quite a few times over the past decade and a half...but I've never 'got' it. You're started with a wall of noise, but the album rapidly becomes less than the sum of its parts. It just doesn't hang together as an album, despite many of that tracks on it being quite good. I understand the legacy of it. But it doesn't fit together. And that's a shame.

The back story of this album is heartbreaking, but Foo Fighters went on to be just as big as Nirvana.
Pretty decent album for a first album, it gives a taste of their style but definitely prefer the more evolved Foo Fighters sound
Bursts out of the gate and even if it tapers off a bit at the end, its still a cracking album.
I like the foo fighters, album as a whole was alright.
This was fine, I really enjoyed the last song on the album, but besides that I didn't really get too much out of this. I would have much rather have just listened to Nirvana instead
It's so much better than a first album by a member of a bigger band ever needed to be. Obviously, 27 years on it's obvious that Dave Grohl is a star, but it wasn't until this. He was just the funny drummer from Nirvana. It opens fully at legendary - the first three tracks are essential, but drops off a bit after that (except For All the Cows). So imperfect, but great.
Sounds easy listening, some great songs, not their best albumn, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Pretty strong release. They are not the best foo fighters because they have significantly improved in the last few years. The record made only by Dave Grohl is a well-known anecdote but always incredible to hear about his process.
I was familiar with some of the songs. The album really wasn't that good and it reached a point when it needed to end. I may revisit one or two of the songs again, but that is unlikely.
Decent continuation of Nirvana. Very approachable but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's catchy and well refined. Much better than their / his later stadium rock stuff. (3.8)
Classic 90s early Foos
Was ready to really not like this. Grunge is my least favorite of the Rock sub genres, this is not the best few years for rock music, and also the Foo Fighters are a bunch of gross AIDs deniers. But it's actually a pretty great listen. Some of those riffs really rip, and the driving beats are catchy throughout. I suppose my qualms, balanced out with my pleasant surprise and enjoyment, equals out to a three. I could go 4 on some individual tracks, but overall 3.

Made on a bit of a lark after the death of Kurt Cobain, this was the album that revealed the sly talent Dave Grohl had been keeping to himself. The sound is a little rough, but there are some real flashes of talent here, as well Grohl's strong pop sensibility, which really elevates a lot of these songs nicely. The fact that this is basically Grohl playing all the parts himself is really impressive. The lyrics are a little cryptic, but no more than most of Grohl's peers at the time. I knew Grohl was Nirvana's drummer. Another drummer who transitions to lead singer in a financially successful way. Kinda like Phil Collins. Sorry Dave. lol Kurt Cobain thought Nevermind was a little too poppy so I get why Grohl did not want to slide a song like "Big Me" on the table in his Nirvana days. The volume is turned up dramatically once they get the hits out of the way. Overall the album is a bit of a "So what?"

First time listening to the Foos debut album in full. Rocks!
3.5/5. Pretty good considering one person did everything. I do think some of the songs can be a little plain, but others make up for it. Overall, this album is above average.

I don't think Foo fighters really does it for me. I wasn't really giving them an honest listen as the volume wasn't high. Their affect on music is significant but not so much on me.

Foo Fighters's debut album is not near a masterpiece, but it's still enjoyable. It tells a story where Dave Grohl is at after leaving Nirvana. It's also my first time see this side of story about Kurt Cobain, and it's about his girlfriend, Courtney, who may be the reason why Kurt was addicted to drugs. Some of the songs sound like Nirvana a lot lol, not that I'm surprised. It's not as hard-hitting as Nirvana though sadly, so I don't understand why would I listen to this when I can just bump In Utero or Nevermind. But if you want to listen to 90's rock album, this one is definitely what a 90's rock album sounds like.
Foo fighters feels so dad rock to me. Some of their stuff hits but it's rare that I ever find an album that I really enjoy the whole way...until now, this feels edgier and harder than their later stuff, plus no "hits"

Was happy when this record turned up for me - less so when I listened to it. Don’t get me wrong I generally like the foo fighters - but this record does not contain much of Dave Grohl’s pop genius and frankly I don’t know how it got picked up by a record label back then besides as a novelty album ‘Nirvana drummer’s cute attempt at a record’. Big Me is the only track here which could have offered a clue as to what Dave Grohl was to offer. Thankfully though it was picked up so maybe this was the importance of the record - it ultimately led to the Juggernaut the band is today - but musically? It’s very bland.
While the Foo Fighters, on paper, seem like a band I should be all over, I really don't know the band's music at all. I mean, yeah, I've heard some songs, but I've never explored their music in any depth. This is a solid album. When you take into account that Dave Grohl wrote and recorded the whole thing on his own, it's all the more impressive. But, man it's difficult to do that and come out with a masterpiece. It's been done, and this highlights just how complete a musician and songwriter Grohl is. It also explains why this is the Foo Fighters' album of choice for this project, as I suspect it's not the "best" from the band's catalog. But a "must listen" as an account of who is the foundation of this band makes lots of sense. Props to Dave Grohl, lots of good music on this album, and I'm inclined to start digging into the band. I was wary, considering every time they release something it results in multiple Grammy nominations — that just fills me with apprehension. My favorite work of Grohl's includes Them Crooked Vultures and Queens of the Stone Age, but maybe that's because I don't really know this band. I started listening to Wasting Light after this played out, and that was very promising. Rock on.
It's hard for me to feel terribly strongly about FF either way. A few of their songs are cool. An entire album is too much. Mostly, I want their vocals up higher in the mix so I can hear what Dave is going on about. Or maybe I don't want to know. I don't know. I like their angst-free music, but at the same time I often feel like there's a lot going on about nothing. Hard to know how to rate this. I feel like I've been giving a lot of 3s lately, but what are you going to do.
I've really grown to respect and like the Foo Fighters over the years but I'm not really familiar with their music. After Cobain's death, I didn't really get caught up with what Dave Grohl was doing. Yes I loved Big Me when it was played on the radio and was surprised to see Grohl out from behind the drums. Over the years I've come to really respect Dave Grohl and I think the success of Foo Fighters is such a testament to simply working and playing music. I looked up a quote from him worth remembering: "Musicians should go to a yard sale and buy an old f****** drum set and get in their garage and just suck. And get their friends to come in and they'll suck, too. And then they'll f******* start playing and they'll have the best time they've ever had in their lives and then all of a sudden they'll become Nirvana. Because that's exactly what happened with Nirvana. Just a bunch of guys that had some s***** old instruments and they got together and started playing some noisy-a** s***, and they became the biggest band in the world. That can happen again! You don't need a f****** computer or the Internet or The Voice or American Idol ." Well, there is some luck involved too. But the sentiment about just getting out and playing is what I took to heart. Back to this album...this is the type of rock I really like. Hard but not too hard. Throbbing drums. Good lyrics. Loud but not noise. And Jesus! He did all of this by himself over 5 days as a way to process his grief over Kurt. I ended up listening to this album two times yesterday---inspired and moved by Grohl's positive manifestation of mourning.
A funny one, this album. I owned it on cassette as a teenager, and I only kinda liked it. The heavy riffs were a bit too angular for my ears, but the poppy stuff rang true. Goddamn though, they fuckin NAILED that mix on their next two albums. And to get THERE, they started HERE. 3.5 rounded up to 4.
This is such a great record. I remember when it came out that it completely vindicated my view of Dave as the backbone of Nirvana and, IMO the true talent. This record is a great cross-section of Grohl's varied influences. There are many power pop references and angular punk chord progressions.
I have never been a huge Nirvana fan, I enjoyed and grew up with it, but was never my go to. When this came out I was surprised... and also didn't glom onto the Foo Fighters... I knew them and the first three tracks on this album cement how good it is to start...it loses me a little in the middle but the last two tracks which I have never heard brought me back into it. Overall, pretty damn good. 3.5 stars.

Color and the shape was the first cd I ever bought so I have a special place for the foo fighters in my heart, and this is my favorite foo fighters album. And Pete’s right it’s the least poppy. But Ryan’s also right that it’s a solid 3.5 round down to 3 tho.

This entry exposes an inexplicable hole in my personal collection. I know the Foo Fighters. I enjoy their music. Yet, out of over 37 days worth of music on my computer, I have a grand total of three FF songs ("Big Me," "Everlong," and "Learn to Fly"). What the shit is that about? I can't explain it. This album proves to me that I need to fill that gap. It's undeniably classic '90s rock. But what's truly mind-blowing to me is the fact that Dave Grohl wrote and recorded this entire album by himself (minus some of the guitar in "X-Static"). I knew he was a well-rounded musician, but that's exceedingly impressive. With regard to the actual music, I think the album drags a little toward the end, but who cares? Given how good the album's good bits are and the fact that Grohl essentially did this by himself, this is an easy four stars (and a reminder that, seriously, I need to get some more damn Foo Fighters in my collection).
I mourned Nirvana so deeply I could never get into the Foo Fighters. It sounds silly, but it was a deeply personal feeling that I still carry. For the first time, I listened to a FF album in its entirety - and it was pretty great. Sure it's mainstream rock, but it's done well & some of the songs go pretty hard. I'm glad this was on the challenge, otherwise I never would've listened on my own.
Hard to believe, I'm sure, but I've never actually ever listened to a Foo Fighters album from start to finish. I like them. I never listen to them unless they happen to come on on the radio or other medium. This is not to say I don't like them, because I do. Quite a lot actually. This album is no exception. They're just never a go to for me. But yes, I definitely like the Fighters of Foo.

I'm still amazed Dave Grohl wrote and performed this entire album (guitar, bass, drums, vocals) by himself and released it under the name Foo Fighters unbeknownst to anyone at the time after Kurt Cobain died by suicide. The album is a solid mix of grunge, punk, and rock with a handful of notable singles that still get radio play today. I don't gravitate toward the FF often, but I'm always happy to hear a FF song.
Dave grohl on the vocals… drums… guitar… bass. I wonder if he wrote with the foresight of others playing the parts. Some unreal guitar riffs from left field. A cracking album and one of my favourite bands. He just yelled too much in later years.
Destined for greatness, but this album is a little rough and ready
I am always in awe of Dave Grohl whenever I listen to this record. His drive as a drummer and multi-instrumentalist continues to blow me away every time I hear it. The fact that one guy wears all the hats on this record baffles me. And, even more, he was just doing it for kicks, for fun. It was an experiment for him. He never considered the magnitude or the power of his musicianship when he wrote, recorded, and released it. This album is one of my favorites. Despite still grieving the loss of his friend and frontman, Kurt Cobain, he still manages to absolutely knock it out of the park with every single track. For obvious reasons, his gift as a drummer really comes through, but when you consider that he taught himself to completely shred guitar, bass, and, on top of that, sing like the badass he is, the record glows even brighter. The context surrounding this album makes it all the more astonishing: He’s in his twenties, left the biggest band of the decade after he lost one of his closest friends to suicide. He combats all of this by putting out a total rock masterpiece all by himself which eventually leads to another success story. His momentum and speed has, and probably will never, fade in time. He has a sense of urgency like no other musician I know, really. It breaks my heart that he’s lost yet another friend and band mate recently with the passing of Taylor Hawkins, but if his-story and history have taught us anything, there will be yet another revival and recharge of Dave Grohl. His next move, next record, and next era will be his greatest yet. I don’t see this man slowing down anytime soon. He will push and push until there’s nothing left. Here’s to the next golden age of Grohl because, let’s face it, it’s all gold.
Sounds like very generic rock music. I liked some of their acoustic stuff on in your honor disc two. Seen them live twice which was actually pretty fun.
Watershed was incredible. Overall solid, some moments that didn’t really stand out, but a good first effort, and easy to see how they got as big as they are.

I wasn't aware that this was basically a Dave Grohl solo project. Making music by himself and then trying to pass it off as a made up band, sounds like someone else I know, ha-ha. Anyway, this is a great album. The Nirvana comparisons are inevitable but this has got a carefree charm of it's own, especially on the jazzy "For All The Cows". Other highlights include the lead single "This is a Call" and "Floaty".
Liked the first track, are these guys the new order of the 90s. Hadn't made that connection before!

There are a fair amount of reviews on this album that are ragging on the Foo Fighters, but this is not really a Foo Fighters album, it's a Dave Grohl solo project. He gave the appearance of it being by a band, mostly for anonymity and throw people's preconceptions. When you think about the production process, it's all Grohl. He had the drive, energy, skills and something to prove! The Foo Fighters (as a band) were later "retcon'd" into existence upon its success. While this isn't my favourite Foo Fighters album, I much prefer the following up, The Color and The Shape (or should we be calling that Foo Fighter's first album?), do I think it's a significant rock album, yes totally. It's more about the journey than the destination, and without the backstory, it would have less impact.
i don’t have many notes on this album, like yesterday it’s not really my style. i prefer more upbeat or feel good music. something a little more feminine. this was too grungy and not very exciting to me.
After Cobain's death, Grohl considered giving music away all together. Instead he went into a studio and recorded this, all the instruments and vocals and we're all very glad he did

Impressive how Dave Grohl did everything on this album. That's incredible. Really good music and glad I finally got to listen to this because I completely missed the Foo Fighters kind of forever.
A one man album from the man who resisted banishment from music after his front man death. Amazing effort of which I can only say may be too long. This was before Taylor and gaining worldwide recognition. Even with its filler lyrics, is better than they latest (and maybe final work).

Foo Fighters are like the Aerosmith of our generation. They just keep coming back when they're no longer needed. The band literally contradicts the era we live in but somehow still has a place. I suppose it doesn't hurt to be an all around nice guy that everyone seems to love. Looking back on this release, it was barely a year after Cobain's death when this album was all over the airwaves. I remember thinking that it would be crap capitalizing on Nirvana successes. KROQ played the shit outta this album. I tried hard not to like it, but then I saw the Mentos video. It was so strangely absurd and fun and basically the antithesis of what Nirvana's sad and angst-y music was. Still on, nearly 30 years later, there are some great tracks on this album that still rock. Highlights include Good Grief, Alone ... and Exhausted. All Looking forward to seeing these guys someday ... RIP TH.
In 1995, no one would have guessed that Dave Grohl had this in him. But his essentially solo debut with "Foo Fighters" began a journey that would that would quickly step out of Nirvana's shadow. "This is a Call" and "I'll Stick Around" pack an incredible one-two punch to open the album, and Grohl never lets off the gas. After recording it himself, Grohl would fill out the Foo Fighters with old friends and future legends (RIP Taylor Hawkins). And I do think this is the right call for Foo on the list. "Colour and Shape" may have some mega hits in "My Hero" and "Everlong," but it also marked a slight shift to an epic arena rock style that they too rarely deviated from (notable exception for the second acoustic disc of "In Your Honour"). With the appreciation Grohl clearly has for the history and diversity of music (see his HBO docuseries "Sonic Highways"), it's too bad that more variety doesn't bleed into his music.
The music on this album is thoroughly impressive. It blows my mind that Dave Grohl wrote all the parts, played every instrument, and sang all the vocals. Dave’s a kick ass drummer and a pretty decent professional guitar player and vocalist. He’s a rock music renaissance man. Overall, it shows that Dave spent little time writing the lyrics. They can be a bit repetitive (Big Me) and hard to understand their meaning (This Is A Call, the whole “minicyn” verse). If I had to pick a weak link, it would be X-Static. With the subdued verses, it feels like a song that should kick in with a high energy chorus like the preceding For All The Cows. No matter my minor complaints, this album is a revelation. It’s unfortunate that only one Foo Fighters album is on the list. And they got the wrong one. Clearly the one Foo Fighters album should be The Colour And The Shape. It also kicks ass, but in a more musically mature way. If I’m in a Foo Fighters mood, The Colour And The Shape is always my album of choice.

I really enjoyed the first half of this album. My attention wavered after this. Pretty good for one dude with a 4 track!
Interesting sound to hear again. The harder rock songs are a bit too much energy and less focused on melody or lyrics. These guys were already quite 'old' when they made this album, although they had still some teenage anger type of lyrics.
I never liked Foo Fighters in the 90s - I thought they were pretty forgettable and I had heard that Dave grohl was an AIDS denier so I didn't give him the time of day. In hindsight - this is a very listenable album, with shades of Nirvana - and Grohl seems a thoroughly nice chap.
Okay… The album starts with this is a call it’s an okay song very middle of the road poppy grunge but nothing horrible. I’ll stick around is a slightly better song I love the instrumentation in this and how Dave’s voice isn’t too loud on here. Big me is a pleasant acoustic song with cool little drum breaks nice. I like those guitars in alone+ easy target especially at the start of the song! Good grief is a nice sounding rocker, I can imagine a lot of head banging to this one! Floaty is a brilliant song a song that starts off acoustic but then when the electric guitars come in the song really packs a punch! It seems to be that in every album with Dave Grohl that I’ve herd there is a mental screamy rampage song weenie beenie is the one for this foo fighter’s album. Oh George is another one of the heavier songs, not as tortured as weenie beenie though, this one actually makes me think more of queens of the Stone Age than anything. For all the cows works well of the last two being a slower track for the most part with one of the most amazing explosive choruses in the whole album. X-static is amazing to be fair it’s got this really cool guitar riff that runs through the song overpowering the vocals without ever really exploding at any point of the song! Wattershed is punk it’s a brilliant song though and I am surprised the album got this heavy because of how tame the first half is. Exhausted is a good closer, very fuzzy sounding yet quite a slow jam, amazing. Well that was the first listen after the second listen all areas improved to make a 5/5.

This honestly felt like a bit of classic Foo Fighters sound and a bit of classic Nirvana sound. Which makes sense, since this was Daves first album since Nirvana, and it sure sounds like it. Never deep dove this deep into Foo lore, but i do like it. Very good listen.

As far as rock albums go, this is a good first effort for Dave Grohl's Foo Fighters, but one that is still too deeply anchored in Grohl's grunge roots. The songs don't yet reach the hights of their later albums and could use more variation, but the signs of greatness are already there in the relentless energy in most of these tracks. 3/5
Dave Grohl's solo debut that would later become the Foo Fighters, pretty wild what this album turned into. While there's a bit of a lack of polish it's pretty incredible that he whipped this together in such a short timespan, and that he's created some serious bangers while also reeling from the grief of Kurt's passing. Objectively I'd probably give this a 4, but Foo Fighters were the best concert I've been to and I'm biased so it's a 5 for me. Love the way Dave just smashes those drums, nobody hits em like he does.

I love Foo Fighters even though they’re a bit of a step away from my general musical comfort zone, and I’ve listened to this album before (albeit a long time ago). There are a few gems on their debut, but a lot of it gets repetitive for me, and it’s not an entire album I would just casually want to revisit. That said, I definitely appreciate this album as a beginning step towards their future albums!
This is the first band I’m VERY familiar with. Absolutely love Foo Fighters. Awesome to listen through the origins here. Dave Grohl is a genius and has been slapping since the beginning. So many bangers in here for me.

I thought I would totally hate it, but mostly found it fairly inoffensive with a couple songs that I thought were good. Gotta love Dave Grohl as a person of course, but Foo Fighters has always been a little generic sounding for my taste
You can clearly hear Dave's punk and grunge past in these songs, but also hear that new foo fighters sound. But Just like most foo fighters songs, they all kinda blend together and there's not really a song that stands out imo.
All the songs flow very well but also are a little redundant. Definitely a classic and holds its own well. Great when you’re in the mood for 90s rock.

A decently exciting first outing from Grohl's long-running post-Nirvana outfit. While some tracks are pure 90s radio filler and it's not /as/ grungy as I would like for the time, the guitar tones and song structures here often hit heavy and hard enough to justify a solid listen.
I love the Foo Fighters. IMO, they are one of the greatest rock bands of all time. I also love this album - but more for the story than the music. This album was a therapeutic experience for Dave that he didn’t necessarily mean for anyone to hear. He recorded it in a week and it consists of stuff he wrote prior to or during his time with Nirvana, which raises so many questions about what the future of nirvana may have sounded like. There are some great songs in here and some that are clearly him finding his voice. Whatever it is, I love it.

I enjoyed this one. This debut album is a good mix between where Nirvana left off and the poppier, accessible alternative rock songs I knew from Foo Fighters.

Incredibly dull, 3rd-rate late-era REM b-sides sung by someone with a voice better suited to silent movies. I get Dave Grohl is a "great guy" but this music is terrible and their popularity is so perplexing. Most songs would be rejected by a high school garage band - but this is not even awful enough to be distinguished as a one star album. Go away
I enjoyed seeing them love, but this album did not set my world alight.
Long story short, I really enjoyed this album. It felt like Grohl took the attitude of Nirvana, mixed in a healthy dose of straight up metal, and then cranked the tempo up several notches. The result is an album that comes out of the gate hard and never lets up. Even the "slow jam" on the album ("For All The Cows") has an absolute buzzsaw of a chorus. The album is jagged and sharp and merciless from beginning to end and I'm here for it. This album is really the beginning of Grohl's ascendance from rock royalty to a legit rock god.
Always felt this album was a bit overrated. I like future Foo Fighter albums a bit more than this one. I do find it amazing that Dave Grohl is such a talented songwriter but never tried anything in Nirvana. 2.5/5

Foo Fighters definitely have the hits. I liked this album more than expected even though it doesn't have any of the biggest FF tracks. Good mix of hard rock with punk influence.
It's good rock, and it's fun. I admit I'm having some nostalgia bias here. I love the unpolished sound. This is the kind of debut that makes you excited for what's to come. For me, Foo Fighters ended up in a direction I don't care for, but there's always this album to take me back.

Undoubtedly impressive as a one-man band, Foo Fighers shows cracks as it drifts towards grunge-pop sameness. But the opener, the most recognizable track for me, was one of the stronger cuts, and Grohl knows how to play an interesting chord even when he's less than noisy.
Who would have made the decision to have this be the Foo Fighters album on this list? It’s the Colour and the Shape that’s their definitive one. The rest of the ‘Foo Fighters’ aren’t even on this album I listened to this record a few weeks ago when Taylor died (along with the other albums he played on). I think it’s really interesting as a fan of their work. It’s pretty scrappy compared the the relatively polished sound of what they do next. Foo Fighters are one of my bands. I have heard every album, especially One by One, There is Nothing Left To Lose, Colour and the Shape and Wasting Light. I was lucky enough to see them twice, including in 2015 when Dave had broken his leg, and played from his Iron Throne of guitars. I think Foo Fighters have been the most universally liked band over the past 30 years. Who else is there? U2 is one, but there’s enough people who actively hate them. Or Red Hot Chili Peppers but I don’t think they’ve been as consistent or have released music at enough of a clip. This band has Dave Grohl, one of the most most recognizable and affable front men of all time, Taylor an incredible drummer and occasionally Pat Smear from Nirvana. Along with their classic music videos this is just a band that has always seemed like they were having fun. They have always had respect for those that came before them, and all of the Foos have been involved with other legendary rock acts throughout the years. They are our generations North Star, you can always count on the Foo Fighters and they are a band that generally everyone likes. It’s their choice now if they continue on given Taylor’s passing. I have to expect they’ll take a few years off then come back with a new drummer. If they decide not to, that’s ok too. Rest In Peace Taylor

Written and recorded by Dave Grohl in the aftermath of Kurt Cobain’s death, this debut album is a strong start to what would become one of the best known alternative rock acts of the 90s and 2000s. The first half is its strongest, and is clearly reminiscent of Nirvana, Grohl’s previous band. The melodies are strong and some moments remind me of the Beatles and Oasis. Overall I’m not a huge fan of the Foo Fighters, but I appreciate this album for what it is and what it allowed Dave Grohl to do.

Inmiddels vooral vanuit nostaligisch oogpunt, want ik hoor nu ook wel dat het niet zo briljant is als ik destijds vond. Maar het hele verhaal er omheen (Dave Grohl die dit hele album in z'n eentje heeft ingespeeld) maakt het een soort mythisch iets.

I always wish I liked the Foo Fighters more based on the seemingly fun personalities of Dave Grohl and the other band members, but they are just not for me. I am consistently underwhelmed, especially with the vocals
Every great band starts somewhere and in this case, Dave started it all here. Knowing Dave did this entire album himself really helps you understand the musician he is. It's not a perfect album but without this we wouldn't have all the Foo Fighters songs we have today.

Full of tunes despite the raucous energy. Effortlessly professional in pulling off this kind of thing (alternative or Post whatever). All this as a kind of therapy in the wake of the end of Nirvana. Impressive. The lyrics are pretty lame - lots of repetitive screamy ranting. Maybe intentionally anti-intellectual?

Dave Grohl is perhaps the coolest dude in the music business. However I don't love the Foo Fighters, I for whatever reason never find myself wanting to listen to a whole album. I can't figure why. Out of all the the FF albums I've probably listen to this one the most.

This is probably a 4 star album, but I have so much nostalgic love for it, and the countless times I played it i my car in high school and college that I have to give it a 5.
Absolutely smashing drums. Dave grohl storming the scene. That double overdrive guitar. Sounds like the band that took over the world. Crazy to think dave recorded all the parts himself and only brought a band together to play it live.

It’s dumb to have ever wished for the Foo Fighters to sound like this forever, but I really wish they sounded like this for more than they did
There's a real charm to how it feels put together - as it's a one-man job, you can sense the seams of the whole thing, and I quite like that. The first half of the album felt stronger and more memorable than the back end, but 'Exhausted' provides a very satisfying coda. 'Floaty' and 'Weenie Beenie' are worthy efforts at experimentation. I've never been a big Foo Fighters fan, but I enjoyed this. There are still hints and echoes of Nirvana in there, but it's perhaps closer to more recent Foo Fighters releases than I anticipated. Fun listen - I don't anticipate running back to it, but we'll see how it grows on me.
Just kinda sounds like rock music, nothing too innovative or special
Pretty generic rock- enjoyable to listen to and fun for the most part, but doesn't exactly feel like anything all that special.

As a Fighter of Foo myself, this album hits me in the feel goods. A true classic in rock music and a labor of love from our lord and savior Dave Grohl.

This Is A Call is a good song. For All The Cows is the best thing that I've heard them do.....even if it is just a ripoff of Nirvana's "Polly": certainly just a coincidence. I just have never seen anything about these guys to get excited about. Every song is either Dave Grohl shouting while they play the same power chord, or Dave is actually trying to sing and you realize that he doesn't have a great voice and has very little range. Take Dave out of the equation and these guys are just another Nickelback.
I think this album transitioned music in the 90s from everyone jumping on the grunge train to the new alternative/mainstream rock path.

Good stuff from the Foos, before they became rock behemoths as today. There's a freedom and release compared with the last throes of Nirvana here, as Dave Grohl breaks free of the grunge mould
I think I like some of their later stuff better. Obviously not bad though.

The backstory to this album is amazing - every track every instrument is Dave Grohl, and he tried to keep that secret which is peak Dave Grohl. Bonus star for being 100% Dave Grohl, loses a star as I'm afraid I'm not a grunge fan. Sorry Dave.
I'd pretty much ignored Foo Fighters, but this is great. There again, I don't much mind if I never hear it again.
Foo Fighters debut album sees Dave Grohl, step out from behind the sweaty backdraft of the Nirvana drum kit, to the front of the band with the bright lights and over gained microphone. While I am admittedly not the most knowledgeable on mid 90's grunge, the Foo Fighters are undoubtedly influenced by their front man's former band. The occasional melancholy tones of its predecessor are replaced with smoother tunes with a country/folk twang in tracks like 'Big Me', 'Floaty' and 'For All The Crows'. However, The Foo Fighters are not the Coke-Zero to Nirvana's Coke Classic. Standout tracks like 'Good Grief' and 'Weenie Beanie' are predominantly orchestrated with more upbeat and energetic guitar riffs that shift the Fighter's tone more towards garage-rock than grunge. The sounds is more electric in the sense that I would not be shocked if their amps and guitars were powered with several strategically placed car batteries while Dave Grohl growls through a fan like you did when you were 8. The Foo Fighter's debut album is the foundation on which one of the most iconic rock discographies spanning 3 decades was built. So I finish this first review as I will all my following reviews Did I like this album?: No. Would I recommend it to someone?: Also, No. Am I glad I listened to it?: I guess so. 3/5 Stars.

Powerful youth
It's a solid album, but didn't hear anything to hook me.
I forgot how raw this album sounds. Hindsight being what it is, the album's eclectic feel (especially beyond 'Alone + Easy Target'), is foreshadowing of Dave Grohl's nascent potential at this point in his career. The album's sound is one of overtly forward and fuzzed up electric guitars, although tracks like 'Big Me' and 'For All the Cows' offer moments that stand-out from that crowd. I tend to think that contrast and variation from the well-worn grunge/rock formulas is directly correlated to why those two tracks have higher play counts on Spotify for the front and back end of the album, respectively. Along similar lines, Dave's vocals are varied across this debut album, sometimes almost hidden behind the blaring leads and other times right out in front. In all though, I remember being amazed at how well he held the front-man role, and that perception holds up over time. As you would expect from any project that Dave is involved in, the drum tracks are steady solid throughout. They are the heart that sends the blood coursing through the veins of the album, delivering beats of energy and life to every track. With all of that said, I don't feel like this is the right Foo Fighter's album to be on the list. I view 'The Colour And The Shape' as being their real debut. This album did much to put distance between Dave and his past rolls in other bands; taking the step stone his past fame provided and vaulting from it. Where it's really at though, is where the band's feet fell next and where they journeyed from there!
