Decent

Was happy when this record turned up for me - less so when I listened to it. Don’t get me wrong I generally like the foo fighters - but this record does not contain much of Dave Grohl’s pop genius and frankly I don’t know how it got picked up by a record label back then besides as a novelty album ‘Nirvana drummer’s cute attempt at a record’. Big Me is the only track here which could have offered a clue as to what Dave Grohl was to offer. Thankfully though it was picked up so maybe this was the importance of the record - it ultimately led to the Juggernaut the band is today - but musically? It’s very bland.

While the Foo Fighters, on paper, seem like a band I should be all over, I really don't know the band's music at all. I mean, yeah, I've heard some songs, but I've never explored their music in any depth. This is a solid album. When you take into account that Dave Grohl wrote and recorded the whole thing on his own, it's all the more impressive. But, man it's difficult to do that and come out with a masterpiece. It's been done, and this highlights just how complete a musician and songwriter Grohl is. It also explains why this is the Foo Fighters' album of choice for this project, as I suspect it's not the "best" from the band's catalog. But a "must listen" as an account of who is the foundation of this band makes lots of sense. Props to Dave Grohl, lots of good music on this album, and I'm inclined to start digging into the band. I was wary, considering every time they release something it results in multiple Grammy nominations — that just fills me with apprehension. My favorite work of Grohl's includes Them Crooked Vultures and Queens of the Stone Age, but maybe that's because I don't really know this band. I started listening to Wasting Light after this played out, and that was very promising. Rock on.

It's hard for me to feel terribly strongly about FF either way. A few of their songs are cool. An entire album is too much. Mostly, I want their vocals up higher in the mix so I can hear what Dave is going on about. Or maybe I don't want to know. I don't know. I like their angst-free music, but at the same time I often feel like there's a lot going on about nothing. Hard to know how to rate this. I feel like I've been giving a lot of 3s lately, but what are you going to do.

I have never been a huge Nirvana fan, I enjoyed and grew up with it, but was never my go to. When this came out I was surprised... and also didn't glom onto the Foo Fighters... I knew them and the first three tracks on this album cement how good it is to start...it loses me a little in the middle but the last two tracks which I have never heard brought me back into it. Overall, pretty damn good. 3.5 stars.

Solid first album, but not their strongest material.

An enjoyable listen, nothing too mind-blowing. Generic rock album. Normally i would rate it 2 stars but Dave Grohl.

Color and the shape was the first cd I ever bought so I have a special place for the foo fighters in my heart, and this is my favorite foo fighters album. And Pete’s right it’s the least poppy. But Ryan’s also right that it’s a solid 3.5 round down to 3 tho.

There are better foo albums but I like that they are on this list. Kinda like a life time achievement award

Pretty good rock album i reckon id like it more on repeated listens

Music wasn’t too bad just not my thing.

Liked the first track, are these guys the new order of the 90s. Hadn't made that connection before!

Just not as impressive as its reputation.

Solid rock. Like a pebble or some't.

I really enjoyed the first half of this album. My attention wavered after this. Pretty good for one dude with a 4 track!

Interesting sound to hear again. The harder rock songs are a bit too much energy and less focused on melody or lyrics. These guys were already quite 'old' when they made this album, although they had still some teenage anger type of lyrics.

I never liked Foo Fighters in the 90s - I thought they were pretty forgettable and I had heard that Dave grohl was an AIDS denier so I didn't give him the time of day. In hindsight - this is a very listenable album, with shades of Nirvana - and Grohl seems a thoroughly nice chap.

The bands debut album and still had me rocking 27 years later!

Great songs, after a while the muffled sound gets too much for me though

Sounds like some foo fighters

This seems to happen a lot - why is this the album that makes the list? It's good and I am sure there are more from Foo Fighters on the list, but this one doesn't highlight a lot of what has made Foo Fighters so great.

As far as rock albums go, this is a good first effort for Dave Grohl's Foo Fighters, but one that is still too deeply anchored in Grohl's grunge roots. The songs don't yet reach the hights of their later albums and could use more variation, but the signs of greatness are already there in the relentless energy in most of these tracks. 3/5

I love Foo Fighters even though they’re a bit of a step away from my general musical comfort zone, and I’ve listened to this album before (albeit a long time ago). There are a few gems on their debut, but a lot of it gets repetitive for me, and it’s not an entire album I would just casually want to revisit. That said, I definitely appreciate this album as a beginning step towards their future albums!

A little hard. Wasn’t always easy to understand lyrics over background instruments

Evo ih, Foot Fetishi!

Leuk album. ***

You can clearly hear Dave's punk and grunge past in these songs, but also hear that new foo fighters sound. But Just like most foo fighters songs, they all kinda blend together and there's not really a song that stands out imo.

All the songs flow very well but also are a little redundant. Definitely a classic and holds its own well. Great when you’re in the mood for 90s rock.

A decently exciting first outing from Grohl's long-running post-Nirvana outfit. While some tracks are pure 90s radio filler and it's not /as/ grungy as I would like for the time, the guitar tones and song structures here often hit heavy and hard enough to justify a solid listen.

5/10. Failed to make an impression on me.

“Oh wow, Dave Grohl did this whole album?!” quickly became, “oh no… Dave Grohl did this whole album?!” 6/10

Solid debut album, catchy, enjoyable post-grunge songs, nothing revolutionary or ground-breaking, but impressive how Dave Grohl played every instrument on this, probably the peak of his post-Nirvana career. Best songs; Big Me, Alone, Weenie Beenie.

Didn't listen to the whole record, so this may be an illegitimate review. Always found the Foo Fighters a bit overrated. Pleasing inoffensive pop-rock. Still feel about the same. Not really my thing.

I enjoyed seeing them love, but this album did not set my world alight.

first three songs are great, but the album really falls off after that

Not great… Beatles-esc with heavy guitars…. But not as good. Saved from a 2* by a couple of decent songs!

Good album. Unfortunately I liked the first track so much better than the others, so it was a bit of a downhill slope. Still, I see the appeal and I'm glad Dave Grohl is a nice dude. Fave track: "This Is a Call"

A foo fighters album. Solid rock

A good listen. Not exceptional.

Definitely sounds like a bunch of Nirvana b-sides/demos in some ways. It's not bad but Foo Fighters definitely get better. Respect to Grohl in that he played all the instruments.

Undoubtedly impressive as a one-man band, Foo Fighers shows cracks as it drifts towards grunge-pop sameness. But the opener, the most recognizable track for me, was one of the stronger cuts, and Grohl knows how to play an interesting chord even when he's less than noisy.

It's a Foo Fighters album!

I love Foo Fighters, but this album is rough. Definitely still reeling from Nirvana influence and super grunge. Their subsequent albums benefit from better direction, with clearer lead guitar and better drumming.

Full of tunes despite the raucous energy. Effortlessly professional in pulling off this kind of thing (alternative or Post whatever). All this as a kind of therapy in the wake of the end of Nirvana. Impressive. The lyrics are pretty lame - lots of repetitive screamy ranting. Maybe intentionally anti-intellectual?

Pretty generic rock- enjoyable to listen to and fun for the most part, but doesn't exactly feel like anything all that special.

OK, but a bit noisy for my liking. I see this was progressive at the time, just not quite polished enough for me. C+

I think I like some of their later stuff better. Obviously not bad though.

I'd pretty much ignored Foo Fighters, but this is great. There again, I don't much mind if I never hear it again.

Foo Fighters debut album sees Dave Grohl, step out from behind the sweaty backdraft of the Nirvana drum kit, to the front of the band with the bright lights and over gained microphone. While I am admittedly not the most knowledgeable on mid 90's grunge, the Foo Fighters are undoubtedly influenced by their front man's former band. The occasional melancholy tones of its predecessor are replaced with smoother tunes with a country/folk twang in tracks like 'Big Me', 'Floaty' and 'For All The Crows'. However, The Foo Fighters are not the Coke-Zero to Nirvana's Coke Classic. Standout tracks like 'Good Grief' and 'Weenie Beanie' are predominantly orchestrated with more upbeat and energetic guitar riffs that shift the Fighter's tone more towards garage-rock than grunge. The sounds is more electric in the sense that I would not be shocked if their amps and guitars were powered with several strategically placed car batteries while Dave Grohl growls through a fan like you did when you were 8. The Foo Fighter's debut album is the foundation on which one of the most iconic rock discographies spanning 3 decades was built. So I finish this first review as I will all my following reviews Did I like this album?: No. Would I recommend it to someone?: Also, No. Am I glad I listened to it?: I guess so. 3/5 Stars.

It's a solid album, but didn't hear anything to hook me.

I forgot how raw this album sounds. Hindsight being what it is, the album's eclectic feel (especially beyond 'Alone + Easy Target'), is foreshadowing of Dave Grohl's nascent potential at this point in his career. The album's sound is one of overtly forward and fuzzed up electric guitars, although tracks like 'Big Me' and 'For All the Cows' offer moments that stand-out from that crowd. I tend to think that contrast and variation from the well-worn grunge/rock formulas is directly correlated to why those two tracks have higher play counts on Spotify for the front and back end of the album, respectively. Along similar lines, Dave's vocals are varied across this debut album, sometimes almost hidden behind the blaring leads and other times right out in front. In all though, I remember being amazed at how well he held the front-man role, and that perception holds up over time. As you would expect from any project that Dave is involved in, the drum tracks are steady solid throughout. They are the heart that sends the blood coursing through the veins of the album, delivering beats of energy and life to every track. With all of that said, I don't feel like this is the right Foo Fighter's album to be on the list. I view 'The Colour And The Shape' as being their real debut. This album did much to put distance between Dave and his past rolls in other bands; taking the step stone his past fame provided and vaulting from it. Where it's really at though, is where the band's feet fell next and where they journeyed from there!

Jújú, fín plata. Rennur í gegn án þess að vekja mikil viðbrögð. Stundum í sæmilegu stuði. Ekki of mikið grunge til að gera þetta yfirþyrmandi.

An enjoyable listen

Nice album! Full of hits!

decent garage/grung rock album, impressive that everything is made by growl himself

Good album. I really like these songs lack of polish compared to the very produced newer Foo Fighters songs.

It's one of their rawer albums, but that does not make it one of their better. You clearly hear the mid 90's sound, but, as with a lot of Foo Fighter albums, you have 2 amazing songs, 2 good and the rest barely average.

This is the debut album from the Foo Fighters. Interestingly, I learned that Dave Grohl wrote and recorded every song on this album. He then came up with the name 'Foo Fighters' to hide his identity from the project, but after a lot of interest in it, he created a band to go along with the name. The album was successful even before release, as tapes Dave Grohl handed out got around to record labels and radio stations. Praised for having great songwriting, and easy-to-jam-to riffs, this album went on to being the Foo Fighters second best-selling and is certified platinum.

I like the idea of this album more than I like the album itself. Best track: Big Me

Mostly mediocre

should be fun?

Foo fighters by numbers ok but not greet

Ugh, I remember when this album was released. I'd only just got on the internet, so tracking down the lyrics to this album was literally one of the first things I did. As a result, the lyrics have never stood out as being a strength. A lot of them seem like filler, something for Grohl to yell. There are a lot of really good tracks on the album though, and it is remarkable that Dave Grohl could debut with this one-man-band project after years as the drummer of an iconic grunge band. I don't think it's the Foo Fighters' best album though and there's a lot to be said for how they developed in later years. (At least The Colour and the Shape is better!)

I thought it was okay wasnt really my style but still good I don’t think I would listen again though

Nice, yes, definitely, but not [half] as good as some of the albums that followed it.

Something about this band’s music will always be very plain, stale and lifeless, and sometimes boring, no matter how important they are for keeping alive rock traditions and great live performances. They don’t excel at any style of rock, whether it be grunge, punk, or classic rock. I just can’t feel anything. The legacy of Grohl always made them bigger than their actual songs.

Ganz gut

An okay album. No weak song but none of the songs were amazing either. A.solid rock album.

Helt fine!!

A collection of nice rock tunes. Well done Dave

The production makes this hard to listen to in parts.

Better was to come followed by much worse

It's clear that this is Foo Fighters first album because while there are glimpses of the sound that the band would one day embrace, it mostly feels like an impression of Nirvana. This is fine for a debut album as Dave found his footing and the later albums feel much more original, so I'd say this is a solid debut album. Fav song: This is a call

Never been a fan of this band. Only dig the first track. 1

A couple of good tracks

Pretty decent. Ive always liked "Big Me"

pretty good

It's Foo Fighters. You get what it says on the tin. Never really felt strongly about Foo Fighters and this album didn't change my mind. It's perfectly good rock music.

About half is excellent and the rest ok, so 3 out 5 overall. Great band in concert and a first class front man and all round top bloke.

I honestly admire this album more than I enjoy it, and it's a decent one. When you're in the most famous band in the world at the time and the singer dies, it would be extremely hard to replicate any of that success. This album wouldn't have been easy to make or promote in these circumstances, but Dave Grohl did anyway. It's not their best album and can really only enjoy half of the songs, but for an album recorded by one musician, its hard to beat. The album is raw and vulnerable, which in turn makes it a really interesting experience. Songs like I Stick Around and Alone and Easy Target where you can hear Grohl's anger and the loud guitars speaks so much. And while I'm more of a Nirvana fan, the variety between the softer songs like Big Me and For The Cows with the heavy shit is most welcome. I've always considered this not as a Foo Fighters album, but a stepping stone between that and Nirvana. The Foos turned into a different animal after this, unique concepts with their albums, but the results are pretty bland (with the exception of The Colour and The Shape). It's healthier they turned out this way and they have some great hits (Pretender, Learning to Fly) and lots of mainstream success, but sometimes I wish they could make another album that's not by the numbers rock and speaks to the heart like this does.

Forever fighting foo.

Hard to believe this came out just a year after Kurt passed. Album starts strong but kind of trails off.

I really like Foo Fighters. 3.33.

Foo Fighters has always been a band where I have liked their "hits," but the album tracks have not really "hit" me. "Rope," from "Wasting Light", is a great example of this. So the 4 or 5 hits off of their first album are great, the "wheat," but the "chaff," the b-sides and the album tracks, are... well, there's a reason why they are not hits. I probably should stick to their "hits," I guess. But their "hits" are really damn good. The Nirvana influence is really worn close to the vest here, but Grohl as a musician has evolved a lot. But this really started him off.

There are some bands and musicians that I highly respect although there's no emotional connection with the music for me. The Foo Fighters and Dave Grohl are a good example of that. For me it's just average but I'm sure that I'm in the minority here.

I don't know why - I always like Foo Fighters when I hear them, but they never grab me enough where I want to listen deeper or seek them out. That leaves me at a 3 - good album but nothing I'd go out of my way to listen to - but I feel like I should like it more.

Buen álbum

Turns out I never listened to this one all the way through before. It's very lo-fi! Can hear Nirvana and future Foos in different places. Particularly enjoyed the combo of Good Grief and Floaty in the middle. I'd rate it a 3.5 if I could but these are the greatest albums of ALL TIME were talking about so I'm marking harsh.

8th September 2021 Caught up on this the day after in the gym. Really like how this was Grohl's therapy for the nirvana break up. Sounds like.

I don't think people would care about Foo Fighters were it not for David Grohl being a Nirvana alumnus.

Some ok songs, but many not really for me or I wasn't in the mood.

Decent, interesting to read the background of this album. Not sure I'll really listen to it again, though.

Love Dave Grohl, not a huge Foo fan.

3.4 - This came out about a year after Cobain's death. I liked a few tracks I listened to then, and I like it well enough now. Foo Fighters is OK in my book. Dave Grohl seems like a cool dude. It's a neutral-positive for me.

I can remember vividly how as a middle school kid in America around the turn of the century, aided by P2P file sharing services like Napster and Limewire, I began to turn away from listening to music that was in the top 40/on Total Request Live and towards “alternative” bands, an important step in my evolution as a music listener. One part of that was picking up both this album and “The Colour and the Shape” off of the strength of songs like “Big Me”, “Everlong” and “My Hero” and their oftentimes hilarious and memorable music videos (the first is especially worth checking out on YouTube as it’s a parody of the cheesy 90’s Mentos ads that still holds up). However, I remember being disappointed with both albums that the material beyond their singles wasn’t particularly good or noteworthy. Neither of them got multiple listens or became beloved by my early teen self as records like Blur’s “Parklife” or Radiohead’s “The Bends” & “OK Computer” did. Re-listening to “Foo Fighters” a couple of decades later, my feelings around it haven’t changed - the first three songs are 75% of the singles released from the album, so the remainder of it is a real slog. Reading about the background and recording of this is especially illuminating - it was recorded in a week, Grohl played all of the instruments, the name “Foo Fighters” was picked to hide Grohl’s identity, cassette copies of the sessions were initially limited to his close friends, and most of the lyrics were nonsensical lines Grohl wrote twenty minutes before recording began. In Grohl’s own words “The first Foo Fighters record was not meant to be an album, it was an experiment and for fun. I was just f***ing around. Some of the lyrics weren’t even real words.” At the end of the day, the inclusion of this album in a “1,001 Albums You Must Listen to Before You Die” list feels superfluous and redundant - though I haven’t reached My Bloody Valentine’s “Loveless” yet, I’ve no doubt it’s in the book. And after all, if I’m going to listen to a 90’s alternative album with nonsensical lyrics, wouldn’t that be the one to go with?

The top songs from this album are kinda mid. just skip the first 3 songs and the rest are decent. reminds me of music people listen to when they say they hate todays music.

It costs to three stars on nostalgia alone. Dave Grohl may be the nicest guy in rock, but bless me, I've never found the Foos to be anything more than the most generic of modern stadium rock acts. Wouldn't turn 'em off if they came on the radio, but nor would I ever make a single positive move towards listening to their music. Except, I guess, thanks to this app.

1st song; This is a Call...great song. No momentum lost with next song. Weenie Beenie is weak 2nd half of album weaker than the first. A couple almost generic metal songs that I didn't like. I like the album closer I'll give the album 3 stars though really 3.5

These seem like songs Dave wrote for Nirvana, so it's a window into Nirvana without Kurt. Good, but not great.

Sounded average, not really interesting 3/5

Such a solid album from beginning to end. I haven’t listened to this one in so long and forgot how many songs I love from this one.

Quite enjoyed this. A few hints at the band the would become with the singalong choruses. More of a step away from Nirvana than I was expecting. Easy Target a great song.

wam bam its a one man band. not quite on a grohl yet with his new project, our boy dave's freshman effort is edgy and gritty and shows off his many talents. his music only goes up from here.

i hate dave grohl tbh except everlong

It was alright. Fantastic drumming as to be expecting but didn’t make a Foo Fighters fan out of me.

I was surprised to not know any of the songs on the album. It was interesting to hear their early stuff but it's not as good as their later work!

Rock. Like The Suburbs but less chill and not as good.

Better than I was expecting! I'm embarrassed to say I enjoyed it!

Some great tunes but some filler too - who knew drummers could sing

3.5/5 Interesting songs, I will have to listen to it again

I like the sound; 3 really good songs in the first 9. At least a 3, maybe a 4/5. I think it's only a 3. Nothing else that got me excited other than those 3 songs.

Ok, but nothing amazing

7/10 considering he played all the instruments bar one track and recorded it in a week. Very good.

Well I was excited about this one and it was a good start, less shouty but I’d rather have a greatest hits to score 4*. Consequently it’s a high 3* !

Way overdue on this one! It was better than I expected honestly, not being a big Foo Fighters fan. Between 3 and 4

Solid album, but missing a bit of polish. Needs another solid song or two or maybe even a remaster would do it. Everlong came on right after the album and it shows how good Foo Fighters can be. 3.5 but rounding down

I enjoy Foo Fighters. This isn't really my preferred genre of music, so I'm sure I don't enjoy/appreciate this album as much as others. With that said I love the nostalgic 90's sound. And I love the grungy rock vibes throughout. Favorite track is Big Me

All of the songs sound the same so far.

D'aquesta destaquen 'Big Me', 'This Is a Call'... i poc més

I love some of the quieter and downtime tracks. I can't go below a 3 because Grohl, but I know that this music ain't my bag really.

bons records... epoca de green day, grounge i telepizza...

I enjoyed listening to this album, I liked it, although I get the feeling that the majority of the songs are the same. You can feel the Kurt Cobain vibe but without him it is just not the same.

Everytime I listen to them I just go 'this is fine'. I appreciate David Groh's ability to ONLY be able to make slightly above average music

I do like Foo Fighters in small doses, their sound gets a little repetitive for me by the end of the album. That might be more Ghrol's singing than the band, I really like the drummer. I like the band though and enjoyed my time with this album more than most so far on this journey.

For a one-man project, not all that bad. But the songs can be a bit repetitively grungy - and because some were written during a time Nirvana still existed, you can’t help but wonder if they were supposed to BE for Nirvana. Overall though, there’s been worse - and admittedly, a fair amount are bangers. STANDOUTS: -This Is a Call -I’ll Stick Around -Big Me -Floaty -Weenie Beenie -For All the Cows -X-Static -Wattershed

Always enjoy the Foo Fighters. I'm not sure I've ever listened to their first record!

Not bad, didn't do much for me though, nothing particularly noteworthy. Wouldn't listen again.

Why this one? Why not one with their better songs?

Vieles tönt recht dry und distorted, chunnt idemfau vom damalige Nirvana Sound. First listen packt nideso, obwohl scho es paar nice Tracks het.

Songs: Alone + Easy Target, Oh, George, For All The Cows

I know why this is considered big. Kinda rocking back up post grunge. I just don’t really like it. It’s ok.

not their best

Was surprisingly underwhelmed initially tbh, until I read that foo fighters is to dave grohl as for you is to prince (debut albums where every instrument and track is performed and recorded/produced solely by the one person). Stand out tracks were x-static, exhausted and floaty for me

conhecia algumas poucas músicas do foo fighters... nenhum desse álbum até hoje num eh ruim não mas tbm não é grande coisa... música q me surpreendeu: weenie beenie não escutaria de novo acho; it's as average as it gets.

3. Tibiezón.

Good 90's grunge/power chord rock. Very strong showing for their debut album. Highlights: Big Me Floaty

mid-90's rock is not my cuppa tea.

There is better foo albums

Definitely a bit of a Nirvana hangover on this one but in a good way. Just very simply less lame the younger they are but very few wowzas

Never would have listened to this album if not for the 1001 Albums. Not exactly my taste but a good album nonetheless

I like Foo fighters, but there may be better albums to put on this list.

This is okay. Much rawer than a lot of their later work, but I think the songwriting is also a bit primordial. Not bad though.

There is a song on here called "Weenie Beenie"

Hieno debyytti, mut FF-standardeissa tää oli vasta alkusoittoa - kirjaimellisesti

nirvana without any charisma

I always thought of Foo Fighters as a singles band, this is the first full album of theirs that Ive listened to. The best live show I ever saw was Foo Fighters, so it was nice to listen to one of their albums now. Gets a bit repetitive later on, but lots of cool songs. Closer to a 3.5

Honestly a bit of a let down, prolly not their best album

I don't think I'll revisit.

It was fine, but I didn't find myself feeling any desire to finish it when I had to put it down temporarily.

I’ll give this three stars because at least the frontman didn’t have a baby out of wedlock…wait, WHAT? I’ve never connected with Foo Fighters in any way, I like a couple hits. I can listen to an album and not be bummed, but I’m not thrilled either

There better not be more than 1 foo fighter album on this list….

Shouty

Jo men aah

Holy fuck this is so boring. Another album skipped. RYM: N Saved a song: N

Generic and uninteresting, though I appreciate Dave protecting us from Foos

Just not my style for the day

I never liked Foo Fighters and their bland brand of alternative rock. However, I've never listened to an entire album from them, so it's only fair that I give them a proper chance. This debut is surprisingly solid at the start, but it very quickly becomes annoyingly dull and uncreative, with very weak songwriting and uninspired riffs. Even if there was anything interesting happening in these songs, the loud-above-all approach to production would completely bury it. I'm open to different approaches to mixing, but if this is the way to go for the band, at least show some shred of attitude or charisma to back it up. Sadly, Foo Fighters avoid both of these attributes like the plague. I shudder at the thought of what the rest of their discography sounds like, because here they already sound like a 20-year-old band running out of ideas.

They're fine. Dave Grohl does his job. Couple good ones, but it's mostly noise.

Dave Grohl seems a good sort. Nice enough, like a big ol' puppy dog. I have absolutely no hatred of Foo Fighters and wish them the best. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with basic, earnest, slightly bland music percolating away in the deep, deep background as I otherwise live my life.

I always feel a little bit embarrassed listening to the foo fighters. I even looked over my shoulder & double-checked the Bluetooth headphones were properly connected before pushing play. Big Me and whatever the first track is called are good tunes, the rest just feels a bit uninspiring

Familiar with a few of these and enjoyed those but the new stuff to me was a bit too screamy for me. Don’t really get what makes it special. This is not for me and that’s okay.

It’s not bad just really not my thing

Standard rock 'n' roll, nothing exceptional. Deserves to be forgotten.

It's not terrible, but it's not very good either. It seems a bit unfair to judge it too harshly given that Dave Grohl was really just trying to find his feet again after Kurt Cobain's death, but it does have a pretty bland, generic 90s rock sound as far as I can tell. The better tracks are concentrated in the first half (‘This Is a Call’, ‘Big Me’ and ‘Good Grief’ were probably my three favourites) and by the second half I was rapidly losing interest. The Nirvana influence is unsurprisingly pretty clear, even in Grohl’s vocals on some tracks.

For fans of the Foo this will be a great listen, for me personally I am not a fan. I like Dave just never got into the Foo Fighters. I really can't stand the production on this album, it all sounds muddled. I am impressed that Dave played and produced the whole thing. Just like every other album by them there a couple rockers and the rest is meh

Perfect alternative rock background music 👍

I didn't feel very strongly about this. It was very monotone, very uniform, and all the interesting harmonic moves were drowned out by the uniform dynamics. Not a fan.

Sounds like the foo fighters but just didn’t really stand out to me. It’s fine but not essential to me

It is a grunge thing. Autopelirokkia. On vähä mid

Would I listen again: nah It was grungy and loud and reminded me of Nirvana but worse. Another foo fighters song came on after this album finished and I immediately liked it better than the whole of this album.

I don’t care for Dave Grohl‘s ADHD youth pastor vibe. His persona makes it seem like we should be having a lot more fun and rocking a lot harder than we actually are.

Didn't care for this, OK songs but nothing standout

Unremarkable rock music. I love rock music. This is rock music for people who have never heard any other rock music and just want the dumb-as-nails fundamentals. This album doesn't bother me, but there's nothing on it that I like.

Not my thing at all. Think this runs quite similarly to Nirvana in the fact I don’t get the hype. This sourt of thing just doesn’t excite or impress me.

This just feels tired and a bit stale to be honest. I found it's energy to be very up and down, and it was missing a bit of flow. I found it listenable I've disliked albums more on here, which isn't saying much.

Hate this band

Feels like they were still getting to grips with their style and what they wanted their music to sound like. An odd inclusion for me

meh, it's not innovative, a bit boring, just basic rock. ok but nothing special

Foo Fighters.. or the first result you get if you google generic rock.

...i didn't like this, sorry dave x

Another nostalgia fest, not as good as I thought it was as a teenager

I went with this in 1995, hard not to in those days given DG’s immediate past, but I don’t go with it now, a horrifying re-listen scraping into the two stars. Tom.

Meget MTV start med "This Is a Call".

Not into their own, yet.

The grand-daddy of rock songs for people who don't listen to rock. Most of the tracks are not very interesting, but I must give credit to them being attrcative songs.

Perfectly competent butt rock.

Nej fy vilken jobbig rock.

It’s not my style

Not the best from them

I was hoping to like this more than I did. Dave Grohl's efforts were so brave and commendable after Cobain's death. The music is perhaps cathartic for Grohl but sometimes too similar to the previous cut. I found the snare sound to be thin. Good effort on his part all in all though.

I'll be honest, after the first listen through way back in 1995 when it came out, I've never been able to drag myself all the way through this album ever again. It's weird, because I like Dave Grohl's drum performances and his personality, but his post Nirvana efforts, with the exception of "Everlong (acoustic)" don't do anything for me. I just don't understand the appeal. This debut Foo Fighters album strikes me as pretty mediocre rock, and far from being essential listening for the 1990s. I am a person who loves to celebrate popular albums, but this doesn't even feel like it has any earworm hooks. It felt like it sold simply because of his association with the recently deceased Kurt Cobain from the year prior more than on the quality of the actual album. The best Foo Fighters performances for me are when they cover other beloved artists whether they be The Bee Gees or Rush, and almost never their originals.

I appreciate that Dave Grohl was in Nirvana, but I still didn't expect this record to sound exactly like Nirvana, stripped of everything confrontational, personal, or interesting. Grohl's vocals even sound a bit like Kurt Cobain. Nor did I expect most of the songs to sound the same.

Not a fan.

just not for me I think

I felt like the songs blurred together as a white noise of distorted guitar chords. For sure the heaviest Foo Fighters album but not my fave.

Radio-Friendly Unit Shifter the Album. I would respect it more if there were some actual pop bangers on here but it’s just all…decent at best ********************************************** —This is a Call…fun opening statement —I’ll Stick Around…generic. It builds into something bigger, at least —Big Me…this is the single I remember from my salad days. It’s just kind of there. I believe Grohl said he was surprised by this album’s success and, to be frank, so am I —Alone + Easy Target…inoffensive arena rock —Good Grief…at least I get a nice, driving drum beat here. I missed it from the previous tracks —Floaty…simple but great riff elevates this one —Weenie Beenie…the drum/bass/guitar is fun but the distorted vocals are a step too far —Oh, George…instrumentation sounds like a throwaway In Utero track. Grohl’s vocals can’t cut through the distortion like Kurt’s —For All the Cows…we mellow things out a bit. Nevermind (ha), more of a Pixies quiet-loud-quiet thing —X-Static…generic —Wattershed…sure —Exhausted…a slightly heavier “Big Me”. It’s also six minutes long. No thanks

I wasn't all the impressed with this album. There were some fun feedback moments but I do not remember the rest of the album High 2

My gods, what a boring record. What a boring band. I could tell a song from the other, gun to the head. I always feel sorry to speak ill of a beloved band, but i truly, simply, don't like them.

I think of the Foo Fighters as the anti–New Order. A groundbreaking, highly influential band shatters under tragic, seismic circumstances, and one or more members continue to tap into that musical vein with a follow-up career that heavily builds on the previous band’s legacy. In the case of New Order, it worked - quite impressively, I might add. The musical history of grunge, college rock, alternative, and surf rock has seen many brilliant songwriters - too bad Dave Grohl is not one of them. But what he lacks in wit, charm, and knotty songwriting abilities, he makes up for by cranking up the production value and creating simple chord progressions with a shout-along-to-ability. The formula for his songs seems to be: can we make it any simpler? And please make it one hook - just one - but one that really sticks, whether you want it to or not. While it oftentimes (and rather outrageously) sounds like a bland Nirvana derivative, the Foo Fighters debut is one you can have fun with (did I just say that?). Well, at least occasionally, because there are a LOT of duds on here. The triplet made up of “Good Grief,” “Floaty,” and “Weenie Beenie,” which forms the album’s midsection, is really something you’ll probably want to forget immediately. But I have to acknowledge: when it works, it works (cf. the opener “This Is a Call,” “Big Me,” “I’ll Stick Around”). Grohl has a strange ability to throw so many styles into the melting pot that his soothing (and charmingly generic) voice can still hold them together. Or to come back to my initial framing: To the amount that New Order radically reimagined their sound and helped to define an entire new aesthetic, the Foo Fighters aggregated and doubled down on rock affiliated traditionalism. Whether that feels like artistic conservatism or emotional resilience is probably where listeners split. I made my choice, haha. And if I made a playlist with The Replacements, Nirvana, and R.E.M. on shuffle, everything I’d want from a Foo Fighters record would be there, ready to digest. Allow me one question though: why on earth didn’t the editors choose The Colour and the Shape, which is, frankly, also not a terribly innovative but at least a cohesive record - and a far more accomplished version of this grunge-pop behemoth that is the Foo Fighters?

For whatever reason, outside a few songs, I never really got into Foo Fighters. This doesn't really change that impression. Honestly, this is just so boring. Not for me.

90's drivel.

Why did they even do this?

As a huge Nirvana fan, I looked forward to Dave and Krist's first solo offerings with great anticipation. I bought this the day it came out, played it twice and was bitterly disappointed. I've never bought another Foo Fighters record since. Listened to this again for the first time in years and... found it disappointing. Kurt was the talented one!

None of the songs really stood out for me. I was somewhat surprised that some of the songs were upbeat considering that it was an album to recover from the suicide of a band member, but then again maybe that is the way it should be.

I could not care less about Foo Fighters. Could I also couldn't care less about them? Almost so, I think Learn to Fly is a good song for the first 20 or so listens you hear it until it achieves its diminished marginal value. The postgrunge genre (arguably invented by Dave Grohl himself, and yes I know he did 95% of the music on the album blah blah blah) is not something that has ever appealed to me, nu metal might honestly be better because the music somehow sounds like it has more meaning then postgrunge's devoid of social commentary in favor of relationship songs. But Foo Fighters self-titled is before post grunge would help rock music get cratered by the 2000s. Kind of like System of a Down's first album would be for nu metal. I can't fault Dave Grohl for needing a musical catharsis after his good friend's death and thus from demos to proper mastering this album was created. But like, you could've founded someone that could actually sing? I know what he's trying to make in stuff like Good Grief and Wattershed, but I'll be biased and say it: Grohl is a decent singer without a good voice. The kind of music he executes like that is better done by Helmet. Big Me is the taco 'bout song to me. Hear it on the radio a bit too often and for a demo, it's nice it got radio play for end of time because it's corporately acceptable. I do like Alone + Easy Target because it could sound like a Nirvana song if Cobain didn't die and if he would not sing for one song. Weenie Beenie is the same way except I disliked it and Cobain could sing it. Overall, Foo Fighters by Foo Fighters isn't as bad as I thought I would, but it's as generic as I thought it would. The guitar/bass work is fine, but the songwriting and singing are just something I can't shake off and pretend to enjoy. These were demos, fuck around material essentially, but even when it's mastered by mastering wizards, it doesn't help out that part at all. I simply do not think this album is remarkable in anyway to warrant being on this list, no matter how big and commercial Foo Fighters are. I can get why Coldplay and some other pop artists are on here, but I think Foo Fighters had a bit more of a negative influence on music. It's simply mid and devoid of character. Something an average person would bring up for the "rock music" they listen to and they only know Everlong or My Hero, both of those songs are on the next album and would make more sense as an inclusion. Or put a single Ween album on the list. That's a 90s band that had a fuckton more character than Foo Fighters, and they even had commercial success. I've said enough negative things, so I'll end on a good note: Exhausted is a good song and closer for the album. I'm strongly resisting the urge to make a joke about that song name about listening to this album, because it wasn't quite like that.

I didn’t hate it. It’s just that nothing stood out or was terribly memorable.

4/10 This album sounds quite a lot like what it is, the un-road tested demo of a guy just knocking some tracks together for fun. He's an exceptionally talented drummer who, at this point, is starting to find his way with guitar and songwriting, but hasn't quite refined those crafts just yet. It does feel like an extension of the song Marigold that he wrote and sang for Nirvana, but was only considered good enough for use as a B-Side. Not bad, but also not particularly great, and there aren't really any particularly engaging or memorable melodies that have stuck with me past the end of the record. What's particularly odd about it is the tonal mix. The songwriting often sounds like fairly bland indie singer-songwriter fare, but it's delivered with the production stylings of a heavy rock record in a blend that just doesn't quite gel. Grohl's vocal is also, for the most part, fairly limp. It doesn't manage to have the intensity to match the production choices for quite a lot of the record, but he does manage to get things more in sync now and again, in tracks like Weenie Beenie and Wattershed. All in all, I found this a fairly frustrating listen, because many of the ingredients were good, but it never managed to connect things together in a completely coherent or interesting way. The follow up album, The Color And The Shape is a way better demonstration of what Foo Fighters can be and I'd choose that one over this to listen to any day of the week. It's not that this is bad, per se, it's just that it's about the most ok album I can think of, and ok just isn’t that good. This Is A Call - This has the melodic sensibility of a fairly run of the mill indie track, with the heavy guitar and rum sound of a hard grunge band. It's kind of a weird mix because, at the surface, the tone is aggressive and feisty, but the underlying composition is fairly bland and beige. It's like if Nirvana had written the theme tune to a long forgotten 90s sitcom. I'll Stick Around - Dave certainly has chops on the drums. This is better than the opener, but it's still quite dynamically flat despite him trying to do a more shouty chorus. There's just something about the delivery and production that I don't quite buy because it feels forced rather than felt. To it's also not that musically interesting either. Big Me - We're back in sitcom theme tune land again. It's incredibly competent, but it's super simple and has the emotional heft of a supermarket valentine's card. Alone + Easy Target - This has more of that grungy sound again sort of half way between Mudhoney and Alice In Chains, but Grohl's vocal in the verses feels pretty half arsed. It gets a little better during the choruses, but yet again I find this to be pretty melodically uninspiring, particularly for how repetitive those melodies are. It's all just a bit bland up to this point. Good Grief - There's good drive and pace to this one. Vocal delivery is a bit on the limp side during the verses and just feels like it's lacking in punch and aggression to match the rest of the track. The chorus leans in the right direction, but never finds the hook to elevate it. Again, the composition just doesn't feel like it matches up with the production and intensity of the tone, just leaving me feeling a bit confused. Floaty - Floaty is right. It's another indie singer-songwriter type song given the sheen of heavy rock production. The drums are great and give this way more drive and direction than it would otherwise have. It almost comes together into something better, but ultimately there's nothing overly hooky or memorable and it still feels like there's too much of a disconnect between song and presentation. Weenie Beenie - This is way better. It has the grit and fire of punk mixed in with the sound of early Seattle grunge. The songwriting isn't complex, but it blends so much better with the production that it's the first time I've felt like the two have been in complete harmony for the entire album. It's got great riffs, great drumming and a consistent and forceful energy. Oh, George - This again feels a little more connected. It's not the most inspiring of songs, but at least everything is pulling in the same direction. It does lack a bit of intensity though and it's quite dynamically flat. For All The Cows - A bit of whimsy now. It's pretty good songwriting and has a nice bit of dynamic variety between verse and chorus, which is cool. I actually buy what Grohl is selling here and it's another where he's managed to tie it up better sonically and deliver with a little bit more of an engaging intensity and drive. Not bad. X-Static - The intro to this reminds me a little of Lit, but they're way more fun and poppy than this verse. There's decent drive and energy to the track, but Grohl could not sound less interested delivering this vocal. It sounds like he's drunk and stoned and singing himself to sleep while all the other Dave Grohl's playing in the band are giving it six nowt, it's super odd. The track behind isn't bad, but that vampiric vocal sucks all of the life out of it. Wattershed - Much better. Good intensity, drive and delivery. Some solid riffs, great playing and all of the elements working to the same end. This is an example of where vibe and feel can elevate a song when everything is pulling in the same direction, unlike much of the rest of the album. Exhausted - Haha, that's quite a disgusting guitar tone. When the second guitar and bass come in, it does sound better, but it's another fairly uninteresting singer-songwriter song put through the lens of hard rock and grunge. There are some great, crunchy riffs in here and some solid grunge production, but again, the vocal is limp and lacking in intensity. I like the way it dissolves into noise and filth near the end though.

Sounds like early 2000s rock, so I guess they were ahead of their time, but it's very mid 2000s rock. Wikipedia says this is punk rock and grunge, but it doesn't feel like punk at all and the grunge elements are diluted.

This didn’t particularly resonate with me. It was exactly as I’d expected it to be. I like that Grohl had written the songs purely for the sake of doing so, with no intention of them being realised as an album. But yeah, didn’t really do anything for me. Good for what it is, but not really anything special.

I wasn't overly familiar with the Foo Fighters before this, but this was pretty disappointing. There are moments where I thought it might actually develop into something quite good, but the whole album felt like it was allergic to doing anything remotely interesting.

Not a huge listener of rock, but this album felt quite generic. A lot of songs feel like an extension of each other.

One of these albums where I know I am wrong but I just did not enjoy.

Turn up distortion and slam drums & cymbals (repeat) Exhausted is the perfect ending song.

This album is fucking ass

Yyyy no me generó nada.

Look I'm not saying that there are not exceptions to the "don't give the drummer a microphone" rule, I'm just saying you can't use this album in the pro column for Dave grohl.

This is crazy for a debut album/passion project that Grohl just put together for fun after Kurt Cobain's death. And I reaaally wanted to like it. But I just don't vibe with the Foo Fighters. They found their sound very early, and I respect that. It's just not for me

I got respect for Dave Grohl as a person and musician. To create an album like this as a solo endeavor is impressive. I can appreciate this record and I enjoyed the listen. It's not something I'd likely listen to again, however. It feels a bit generic and unremarkable. The mix had the vocals way too overshadowed. Idk what it is with grunge but why do so many artists insist on singing their lyrics inaudibly? What's the point of even singing if I can't understand a word of what is being said?

Too shouty for me

why did I think the foo fighters were gonna be really good????

I thought the fact that I recognized the name would mean I was in for some surefire bangers, but honestly found the album leaving me feeling pretty "meh". Was not impressed and wouldn't listen to any of these songs again. Was not for me.

Very interesting dynamics but honestly boring and had to force myself to really listen to come to a conclusion of one song I liked. Feels very generic like H&M music. Overall very mid

Not much to hook me on this. I have seen and heard a lot of comments around this being 'middle of the road' and that is way more damning that I think I expected. This does nothing to make me want to pay attention, it just drifts into the background. Lyrics are extremely flaccid.

Dave Grohl's look-ma-no-sidemen project alternates REM-influenced strummy stuff with punk/hard rock hybrids, neither of which really floats my boat (though I'll grant that the former is marginally more interesting than the latter). The more he varies the arrangements, the more engaging the songs are, but too often he relies on fuzzy undistinguished guitars that cause a lot the songs to blend together after a while. Grohl's voice is also fairly colorless but his (mostly) clean phrasing and tone at least helps the vocal melodies shine through. As a whole, it's all competently done but there's nothing here that's hooky enough to make me want to return to this record.

A humble but ultimately underwhelming offering from The Foof. Hindsight has probably negatively impacted my listening experience with this record. I’m sure it sounded a bit more fresh and current at its time, but FF have since gone on to make a handful of hits that are pretty much these songs but better. All that being said, huge props to Dave Grohl for apparently playing most of the instruments on this record. It doesn’t make the music any better, but it is wildly impressive. “Floaty” was the best song imo, heavy emphasis on harmonics and more colorful sounds, a bit like the band Hum. Strong 2/5

Foo Fighters' self-titled debut has always been consistently forgettable for me, decent in the moment but never leaving a lasting impression. This listen didn't change my mind at all really. The album is just kind of stagnant, just Dave Grohl being Dave Grohl; if that's your thing you'll love this album. For how much of this album was literally just him it is impressive from a multi-instrumentalist standpoint. The actual content of the record is just kinda flat for me. It sets the groundwork that Foo Fighters would later run into the ground, but back in 1995 I'm sure this sounded at least a little fresh. One track that did grow on me on this listen: Exhausted is a great closer and kinda makes you forget how awfully boring the five tracks preceding it were. This is a Call and I'll Stick Around remain pretty good, but the formula gets stale quickly and I'm pretty sick of it by the end of the album. There's not even a big track that at the very least gives us a decent single to take away from it, the highs never reach anything special, the album just kinda sits in mid-land for its entirety.

It's fine. It's just so vanilla.

I quite like the big songs but have never really got the Foo Fighters. Listened to it 3 times and still did not spark a reaction. I like Dave G but can take or leave this.

I prefer The Colour and the Shape. Even There’s Nothing Left to Loose is my favorite. I never cared for this record.

not really my music taste, and personally it was too loud that its just overwhelming

Boring. Weenie Beenie was good. I appreciate the history. Not the vocals. Drums are good.

fave track: I'll stick around least fave track: weenie beenie - just a little overstimulating for me personally Sick guitar lines. I'll Stick Around is great i especially enjoy the verses. The beginning of Floaty is prettyyyyyyy. Overall this isn't my typical vibe but I still appreciate it for what it is. I would give this a 5/10 (FOR ME PERSONALLY!).

Songs all blended into each other, no real standouts for me. Annoying in places e.g. Weenie Beenie

Couple of good songs (Big Me was always a favorite) but ultimately too repetitive for me.

It’s...consistent?...but rather mundane after the first 4 tracks.

hmmm 2/5

The songs are all…..fine. The Foo Fighters were a competent band right from their debut. But the album isn’t all that engaging or interesting, though it isn’t offensive. The vocals didn’t have as much weight behind them as you would expect which contrasts with the rest of the albums sound. I do respect the albums story, with all of the instruments being played by Grohl as a solo project made in the wake of Cobain's death.

Found the whole thing to be surprisingly boring. Do people like Foo Fighters this much? Maybe you had to be there idk

i dunno, i just do not care about the Foo Fighters. this album played in it's entirety and it never make me lift my head to actually tune into what was playing.

Lacks that magic from later albums but still a great debut

I already know I won't like this one. 2/5

Kind of generic feeling, no real memorable songs. Maybe the Oh George one. Didn't notice the album stopped playing when it was over. Would not seek out any Foo Fighters stuff after this

I hadn't heard much Foo Fighters beyond Learn To Fly (which for some reason I thought was on this album, but wasn't). This album was just ok. Each song is just whatever, not great but not bad either. Best song: For All The Cows

foo fighters my nemeses… gets two stars because one of the songs was ok but i am not willing to relisten to find out what song it is

Unmemorable rock album

Damn I kinda had my expectations too high. I wish there was more oomph in their songs 3/10

I expected better from Dave Grohl. Such lifeless yacht-rock pap.

I really don't like the foo fighters. especially the hooks are incredibly lame to me. well well, to each their own.

Honestly very pleasant, nice energetic background noise. I like the names of the songs quite a bit, the lyrics are confusing but they still evoke a mood

haven’t listened before. i don’t think i like dave. some of it was ok. fav: for all the cows

idk, i tried to give it a go but i’ve never been into foo fighters

Was ok, I’ve not listened to a FF album before, though I do like the odd song, and loved Nirvana, Grohls stuff is a bit heavier

Mixed feelings

If you’ve heard one Foo Fighters song, you’ve heard them all.

Phuuu fighters Vill z rockig, i can not

I can imagine that Foo Fighters music came as a positive surprise when they came out with this first album. Living in the shadows of Nirvana this was probably not what was expected. Full of energy and expression. Well composed band, with good music that was crowd pleasing. As a live music act Foo Fighters is exceptional too. I recall seeing them the first time when I was 17 in Stockholm. Dave Grohl as a performer was mind blowing for me back then. Today looking back at Foo Fighters full discography and music I find it quite dull. A fairly thick mass of similar type of composition.

Pretty exhausting. Guitar tones are very same-y, the melodies lack oomph, vocals in general lack focus, they are mostly buried under all those guitars. Every song starts +- promising but little of the excitement survives when the singing starts after the opening riff, even less by the end of the first chorus. Kinda boring, sludgy, placeholder music. Kinda like weaker Weezer (which is a lot of Weezer, to be honest) if Weezer was less pop.

In the words of a good friend of mine….. not for me

I'm so sorry Dave. It's not you, it's me. I used to love hanging out with your ex before he died so tragically young. Given that you're so similar I really thought this might work. I mean, I love the tunes. And the guitar is my favourite instrument. But something about this gives me the ick. Hard to say why, but maybe it's the gnawing idea that you might be scraping your ex's stuff? Don't be sad. I'm sure we'll see each other occasionally. We have lots of friends in common. And we might even enjoy the odd moment together. But for now we need time apart.

Didn't really enjoy this one. 2/5

Not my genre, and very calm album, the best part is the first song which I recall as a banger.
