Reviews (page 12 of 13)

Bad, even by other foo fighters music standards. Lots of grating noises and mediocre junk rock

90’s supergroup that’s less than the sum of its parts (Nirvana, Sunny Day Real Estate, and The Germs). LP starts well but trails off. A bit like their career as founder members were replaced by lesser players leaving Nirvana’s 4th best drummer mugging in the limelight. This is like all the great 80’s 90’s American bands - Pixies, Dinosaur Jr, Hüsker Dü, Mudhoney and many more with the rough edges shaved off, unfortunately they also took away all the interesting bits.

I didn’t know this album, nor actually anything much about Foo Fighters music except a vague impression based on who they were (ie Dave Grohl’s band). It was more poppy than I’d expected. I don’t know if that’s their typical sound. Unsurprisingly given the artist’s background in Nirvana there are strong flavours of grungy rock, but on the lighter side comparatively. A few times I was reminded of the Lemonheads who are at the poppier end of that genre. It’s a very American sound. It was fine but at this distance it felt quite generic.

I miss Kurt Cobain

Album Nr. 90 1. Es klingt alles gleich. 2. Ich habe schon bessere Rockmusik gehört.

Hmmmm regular

Not a big fan of the Foos. It is a fairly decent rock album

I once dated a girl who was beautiful, but had questionable taste in music. I asked her who her favorite band was and she responded "The Foo Fighters". Me: "The Foo Fighters? That's not even Dave Grohl's favorite band that he's BEEN IN." The relationship didn't last a whole lot longer than that.

It was ok. Inoffensive 90s rock.

as Nirvana were entering their final years, Kurt was getting progressively more interested in breaking conventions. he made an album with William S Burroughs. he got Steve Albini involved with In Utero. then he took his own life. and the rest of the band live on wandering aimlessly. i don't like the great man theory of history, and i don't like it when it's applied to art. but Grohl is no Cobain. remember when he was caught cheating on his wife and everyone went apeshit? kind of funny in hindsight. deserves to be one of the 1001? i truthfully could not give less of a shit about the Foo Fighters. even The Colour and the Shape would be a hard sell to me.

Couple of good tracks at the start then becomes rather boring

I’ve always said they are a greatest hits band for me and this debut does no more to make me think otherwise. Big is a great tune and there are some other interesting tunes but just stick on the greatest hits and enjoy, as it doesn’t get better the deeper you go ! ⭐️⭐️

Mucho ruido, poco sonido. "Fingernails are pretty, fingernails are good" ¿?

Ugh. Another album of that 90s "overbearing drums and loud, muddy guitars for the sake of being loud" thing. I hated it then, and I still hate it now. While there are a few passable tracks I might consider adding to a larger playlist, as a complete experience, this pretty much sucks. Look, I can give Dave credit for proving he had more talent than being just a drummer, but this album suffers from the same problem 'Nevermind' and 'In Utero' had: there's just too little substance for the amount of crap one needs to wade through to get at it.

Didn't feel much from this album. Just felt like regular rock.

6/10 Highlights: Big Me Exhausted

I didn’t realize how much early Foo Fighters sound like a cross between The Beatles and Nirvana

boo foo two

i have never really knowingly listened to the Foo Fighters before and now I know why. They kind of sound like the royalty free version of other bands playing this style of music

felt more like eating than listening to music Fav song: Exhausted (and I was)

I don’t know what it is about the Foo Fighters that just doesn’t hit like other bands doo. It’s like there’s something missing but I can’t put my finger on it. The music isn’t bad, I just can’t get into it.

I do like the Foo Fighters, this album sounded like they hadn't quite broken the mold, but they had their own sound. I'm glad that they continued recording from there, but this was a good start.

Boy album

It has some hoooks and moments but overall a bit to rough round the edges, not sounding finished

**An ok album, some tracks easy listening, some are not!

Well... at least I know they get good later.

I didn't realize that the Foo Fighters started as a one-man band, which I guess is a little impressive. I will, however, stand by my position that they are the dullest rock band to emerge in my adult lifetime. Making boring music is a hell of a way to process Kurt's death.

Boring album

Eclectic album, lot of different rock rhythms on here, some screaming others chill. Thought it was meh in all honesty. Can't think of a favorite track on this album, they were all alright.

Obviously I've listened to Foo Fighters quite a bit through the years but this is not for me, looks like I'm not a fan of early Foo fighters that sounds a bit like a boring version of nirvana

What an absolute yawn fest from the most boring guys in rock. I can't even be bothered to say much more, except to say that Dave Grohl gives me the biggest ick and I don't know why.

It’s not that bad, no highlights tho

A lot of these songs are kinda just loud background music. Like hold music, but with "edge".

Dee gees.

super different from how i think of them. not my fav

Didn't like it then, don't like it now. Never got the hype

эм Smells like teen spirit. Во

I guess it's inevitable that this would sound like Nirvana. The claim is that most of the songs were written before or during Grohl's time in that band. I don't see any reason why that's not true, but they were definitely influenced by Nirvana at least to my ears. It certainly didn't make me a Foo Fighters fan and I don't get the appeal, really.

i feel like every review i give begins with this family member introduced me to xyz but. my mum adored the foo fighters, they were on constantly in the early 2000s in our home. this album was Not part of the rotation and i'm a little glad it wasn't? maybe it's because i didn't grab the remastered version or something but the opening song felt very flat for me and it just continued. liked: big me, and that's about it.

two good songs and a lot of boring ones

First time listening to Foo Fighters. I respect their music, but it’s not for me.

Not a favorite. Lots of yelling. However, Weenie Beenie was a good listen while trail running. Felt like a drill sergeant was keeping me motivated:)

Some people really like foo fighters. I am not one of them. Knockoff Christian sounding nirvana

This is just Loud noise.

Foo fan.

Stable debut from post-nirvana Grohl, historically and culturally significant but not much replay value. Favorite track: I'll Stick Around

Surprisingly garage yet sounds like muzak

Definitivamente é Foo Fighters e definitivamente é antigo rs

The most Foo Fighters Foo Fighters album that ever Foo Fightersed. The Colour and the Shape is better

i admittedly never listened to the foo fights much at all, and am only familiar with their popular work. edit: they're good! just not for me. or at least now. maybe didn't give them what they deserved and actively listen.

Meh, Big me is good all others are ok

Fine, very experimental.

I can tell this is a good album by a good band but I just find them annoying. At least the voice is less gravelly and dumb than in their later releases. They're quite prone to writing a good song then being like what if we made loads of irritating noises now lol They just say stuff Why are you just putting static in my ears for no reason. Fuck off.

I can appreciate that this is one person, but as Dave Grohl said himself with this record he was “just f-ing around”. It feels weird to call this a foo fighters album and I just couldn’t get into any of the songs here. If I had to pick my favorite tracks here are “Big Me” and “Floaty”.

It’s alright

Too noisy for me.

I think myself to be a Foo Fighters fan but, this is my first time hearing their debut album. There's a clear and strong presence of Nirvana coursing through this album and that takes it down a few notches for me. I've learned that I'm just not a fan of garage grunge; the singing into a tin can, lyrics that go nowhere (if you can understand any of them), and just thrashing turn me off. I want to like them and I want to hear more, so hopefully that'll happen. Favorite song: I'll Stick Around

I didn't really like Foo Fighters when I first heard them in high school. Almost every song I heard sounded the same as the other ones. In the back of my mind I thought I at least liked Big Me. Listening to this album more than 20 years later I feel the same and don't even like Big Me that much. The story of how Dave Grohl created this album is cool though.

the sound isn't terribly unique, nor memorable

Foo Fighters is an okay alt-rock/grunge album, and as such, entirely forgettable. It delivers exactly what you’d expect from its era and genre, but nothing more. The songs are very samey. There's nothing to be surprised by, or excited about, it's just ok. Maybe growing up on alternative rock desensitized me to it. When a band brings nothing spectacular, it’s like listening to nature sounds - just swap birds and rain for distorted guitars and gravelly male vocals. Foo Fighters is the quintessential example of that effect.

So Foo King Boring, Boring name, boring band, yawn... Insert last line here.

It’s fine

This is a decent generic US rock album from the mid-90s. It sounds exactly like you'd expect. I had heard maybe three songs before and the rest of the tracks were unsurprising. Does this mean it's a bad album? No. It's slightly too long but it's fine. Better than Soundgarden and not as good as Hole. If there was a way of giving a 2.5 - right in the middle of the ratings system - I would. It's just .. there.

You can tell this was Dave trying to write nirvana songs, hadn't really come into his own yet. Definitely the sound of someone finding their feet, not that I'm the biggest foo fighters fan ever but they for sure got better after this.

Disappointing and generic, doesn’t have the same emotional conveyance as some of the other songs I’ve heard from the foo fighters

This was really bland and somewhat grating.

Generic rock music

The dad rock album to end all dad rock albums.......... Have not heard this. Know a couple Foo Fighters songs. Not too excited, but not dismissive either. We shall see. This is a Call starts things off aggressive and noisy, as expected. Really like the drums! I like what I can understand of the lyrics. I like this. Next track sticks with the exact same sounds, but it isn't as exciting. It sounds angrier, which is something, but not better by any means. Big Me slows things down, which is a very welcome change of pace. Nice, but very short. Aaaaannnddd we're back to the noisy noisy "look how much noise my guitar can make". This is just notttt my thing. This album is very repetitive. Same drums, same guitar, same vocal delivery throughout. Just nothing that feels all that inspired. Not even halfway through, damn. Floaty at least changes the sound a bit, even if it's still in the same palette Yeah, these tracks are just going by without leaving any mark. Just waiting for it to end at this point. For All the Cows is great! My favourite since the first track. X-Static is the most interesting thing that's happened so far. Reminiscent of shoegaze. More songs like it would have been nice. Of course that change of course couldn't last long. Feel like I'm gonna go deaf from this. What an absolute waste of always worsening my hearing habilities. The closer's a bit interesting too, but not much is done here either. Each song in this album is indistinguishable from the next. There are no build-ups, no developments, every song starts and ends the same way. I don't know, maybe the genre is just really not for me, but this was yet another miss from the heavy rock crowd. But this is just noise for the sake of it. Nothing feels earned. I'm sure this album was important for the time, and I can understand its inclusion here, but this does absolutely nothing for me. There are no subtleties, virtually no developments. Just nothing of note. For me. Bye

2 stars I’ve known Foo Fighters for over 25 years but don’t think I’ve listened to a full album. While I was familiar with some songs on this, it’s mostly a blind spot. I can appreciate that this is an impressive recording by Dave Grohl alone. However, taking a step back and comparing with all albums, I don’t know that this fits with a must listen. It has some good tracks, some inoffensive but not memorable tracks, and forgettable things. There is no pull to return to it. Foo Fighters ended up making much better music from here, making this more of a historical document than something you have to experience.

Pretty ok album, not amazing production, but fun to see the genesis of Foo Fighters

Ah man. I don't hate them by any stretch, but I've never been a big Foo Fighters person. I'm trying to give this album an honest go. But ultimately, most of this just isn't doing anything for me. At least it has Big Me on it, a song I do legitimately like.

I really like the Foo Fighters, but havent listened much to this album, which was their first. It is quite heavy, which is the reason it turned me away in the past. Still not the biggest fan though. Love their later work a lot more.

A record like this illustrates why Kurt Cobain was so important to the band Nirvana. Grunge didn't just mean simple and bastardizing the majority of the work of mainstream rock over the 70s and 80s, but a feeling of angst and frustration by a group of people growing up in a time that needed a release. This album shows that not everyone can capture that and why Cobain was such a loss to the world. They would go on to make some better tunes, but this is a collection of moslty slop. Generic, but loud and better than some. 3/10

Not a fan of the Grohl, cringe Dad rock

Not my favorite but I can appreciate the album a lot. Again, an album my Dad would love to hear that I listened to. Favorites are Alone + Easy Target, Good Grief, and X-Static

Very boring mostly

A couple good tracks, but overall not enough melody for me.

Non il mio genere 2

Not my cup of tea at all

I thought I had some sympathy for THE FOOIES despite their one note music being overplayed on every commercial rock station on every jobsite in australia, but it seems that the stuff i'd heard that was an enjoyable listen came from later albums. Never heard the debut album by this famous group of AIDS denialists and secret family havers but interesting to note that their sound hasn't evolved AT ALL in THIRTY YEARS.

I'm really not a fan of the extremely fuzzy and blown out recording quality of the album. I find that the songs all sound very similar in style and substance to me, both in lyrical content and in actual melodies and rhythm. I would prefer to listen to any Nirvana album over this ten times out of ten. I don't mean to disregard the value of this album to Dave, but it's certainly not for me.

Are you a commercial pop-orientated radio station that wants to occasionally play something "edgy"? Presenting the Foo Fighters. Whilst admiring Grohl's "fuck it, I'm just going to play everything", it's hard to believe this would have got any traction at all if it hadn't been Grohl. If I'd gone into the only bar in town in Nowheresville USA on a Friday night in 95 (a) I would have been underage and (b) had this been playing, I wouldn't have thought - these guys are gonna make it.

Rompish

The blandest band to ever be the world's biggest rock band. Maybe their least bland album. Still pretty bland though.

My least favourite of Dave Grohl's side project. +1 for low

Right off the cusp of Kurt murdering Dave Grohl and wearing his skin so that he could leave the spotlight of Nirvana to pursue other ventures. This is the other venture. You can hear the early forms of the Poo Attackers greatest hits that didn’t quite turn out to be a greatest hit. There were multiple times where a line delivery made me think Kurt was going to burst from the Grohl seams and start destroying a guitar in the sound booth. But he kept his cool and produced some really mediocre songs that I almost instantly forgot and then went home to cheat on his wife with someone half his age. 4/10

Not my thing

It is good alt-pop-rock with wide appeal, but a little to ho hum sounding for me with no hook. I don't think the vocals are super strong on this album either.

Starts strong with a lot of fondly remembered Foo Fighter songs, like This Is A Call, I'll Stick Around, and Big Me. Lots of repetitive phrasing. Alone + Easy Target and Good Grief are obnoxious listens. Good Grief is a generally good song but annoying way "Hate it" is repeated is very grating. Floaty is a step up from Good Grief, but isn't a song I'd come back to. It seems to be attempting a "floaty" vibe, which I enjoy in songs that execute it well, but this just sounds like the same song but less intense. Weenie Beenie starts pretty annoying. The vocals are intentionally made to be extremely grating. I think that can work but it doesn't seem like they've mastered song writing at this point in order to make that work. Oh, George sounds like a "Foo Fighters" song, but kind of a boring one. It lacks the energy of some of their more well-known classics. For All the Cows was a nice positive spot in a part of the album that's started to drag. Not good enough to warrant further listens, but I wouldn't be unhappy to hear it again. X-Static puts me to sleep. That being said, it could definitely find its way on a more lowkey, chill playlist with the more whispered vocals. I vibe with this. Wattershed is meh. Tries to be a high paced, heavy metal joint but it doesn't work. Exhausted is a quiet "exhausted" song. Honestly, a pretty good way to close off the album. Overall, after my initial listen, probably a 2-2.5 for me.

3/10…grunge / 90er rock

really boring

Huolellista, jopa kekseliästä rockia, jonka esteettiset ominaispiirteet (kevyen hämyilevät sointuvaihdokset ja rytmitajuton Biitti isolla B:llä) heikentävät lopullisen tuotoksen tehoa.

Not my favourite foo fighters album. A bit too grungy rock for me.

Big respect for Dave Grohl...the ultimate rock fan and its best advocate. This first album is a tour de force, as Grohl played all instruments, finding his own voice and sound. But I just do not really dig it. I prefer the man's work behind the drum kit.

This is so far from In Utero, a bit too cheesy to me. An ok follow-up to Nirvana with some really good songwriting. Foo Fighters (actually Grohl alone) have proved they could last 30 years and keep winning people over long after the grunge era faded away… and that’s already saying something. Seen them live back in the 90s and it was really boring, so I am not very enthusiastic.

Cool riffs in Weenie Beenie. Love the Foo Fighters & Dave Grohl but didn’t really love this album. Not much that stood out, seems like the same song rewritten for the most part.

Pretty straightforward album, without much surprises. This is as generic as it gets, pure radio rock. There is not much of interest on the album, the chord progressions are simple, the lyrical themes are fine, nothing new, there are no solos or fills of any kind. Only every now and again there is a semi interesting song, but they also tend to repeat the same ideas and the simple song structure throughout. The whole album was written and recorded by Grohl, which is impressive before you listen to the album, since it does genuinely sound like it was written by a single person. There are no interesting parts on any of the instruments, they just do the same thing throughout the song, there is no special musicianship skills which every individual artist which is a master of their instruments brings to the table. Having in mind, this is not the only "one man" album out there, and there are some great ones, some work from Price for one, so this is no excuse. Was between a 2 and a 3, some of the songs are not complete filler, and the fact that the whole album was performed by Grohl himself, weren't enough to pull me to a 3.

By halfway through I was bored as hell. All the songs are at a similar tempo and the vocals are sleepy. There are some good moments that sound very Nirvana-y, when the tempo picks up and the sounds get janglier. It’s a good reminder that Nirvana wasn’t all Kurt Cobain and that Dave Grohl has talent too. But this has aged into dad rock at this point.

Never was really into Foo Fighters and listening through this didn't sway me one way or another. I guess this was rougher around the edges than their latter music, but didn't really hit a nerve of any kind.

Interesting sort of footnote almost to the Foo Fighters experience as it continues today. On some tracks, ol' Dave seems to have found his voice and vibe, and others I find to be more generic '90's Rock' fodder. Very interesting that this made the list of must listens for me, as the Sophomore effort has all the big tracks.

Eh, it’s really not my thing. It is the epitome of that thing, though.

da fehlte noch so einiges

Dave solo - großartig!

The Good: We’ve got Dave Grohl The Bad: the Foo Fighters are a band, not a one-man piece of entertainment… The Ugly: you guessed it… another album named after the band, which in this case, isn’t a band… When this album came out, I did not really pay much attention to it, though I did enjoy the music video a lot! Just listening to the drumming on this album, it is so basic, and many of the songs just kind of exist to fill space. I really appreciate Dave Grohl, for all he did with Nirvana, the Foo Fighters, or just in general. This album, I could have skipped it, which makes me sad… I do hope that The Color and The Shape is included in this list, because that album is an easy 4* This one, hardly a 3*

Sucked!

Me: Mom, can we have nirvana tonight? Mom: we have nirvana at home. Nirvana at home is this just this album.

não foi dessa vez foo fighters

mamae compra nirvana pra mim? nao filho ja temos nirvana em casa a porra do nirvana em casa:

None of the songs on this have cracked the top 10 of their songs on Spotify. I mean it is a fun debut but "This Is a Call" is maybe the only thing worth hearing on it.

Cool and admirable that Grohl recorded everything himself. Emotionally interesting that he used the recording to cope with Cobain’s suicide. You can hear echos of Nirvana’s grunge and the roots of Foo Fighters stadium rock. But really it’s a guy playing some demos. Echos and roots are cool but they’re not fleshed out in either direction.

Man, I never could get on board with the Foo Fighters thing. I’m trying to listen with open ears, but I remember hearing Marigold (the In Utero outtake) way back in the day and I kind of thought Grohl was just trying to cash in. (Everybody with any sense did and it felt like a shitty and very un-punk thing to do.) And then came this album. It’s very mid. I didn’t like Sunny Day Real Estate then and I don’t much care for them now and that’s half of the band. I don’t know. Maybe I was just jealous of the man’s success and (at the same time) too chickenshit to go out there and try to make a name for myself. It’s easy to criticize. I’ll say that I’m sure Grohl would have faced a lot of criticism and bullshit from people like me (falling into the trap of comparing him and his songwriting to Cobain’s) and it’s admirable that he kept putting himself out there despite all of that. But, without any of that baggage, I really don’t think this music is for me. The lyrics and the vocal stylings are uninteresting, the guitar work is mostly barre chords and they don’t have any real verve. The hooks don’t really get you. The harmonic structures don’t imply or reveal any melodic information that’s compelling at all. Big Me is okay, but it’s really just a basic 50’s 101 rock ballad with really lame guitar work. I don’t know if I’m going to be able to listen to this whole thing.

I saw the Foo Fighters last year at the Jazz Fest. We left after about 25 minutes, bored by their repetiveness. This disc is a good reminder of why.

A tepid first album, far from the bangers they've had later on. It has its moments and starts off well, but becomes bland by the end.

I didnt know that big me was a foo fighters song so that’s something. I added it to my playlist which is the first time I’ve done that so far but also I think that was the only song I liked off of this album. Oh George was alright as well but the rest weren’t for me. Which is something I’ve been saying often in these notes I think. But I’m determined to keep listening because I think I will find something I’ll really like. At least this one was a bit more modern.

Sounds more like smth I would listen to. The guitar and drums are insanely cool

I can appreciate that Grohl did everything here, but this thing bled together into one big 90s rock soup. Gave me the snoozes. That said, I enjoyed "For All the Cows" a lot. It was distinguishable from the rest of the tracks.

Opening track is great, rest a bit mediocre for me…

This feels rather generic and unmemorable to me. I don't think it's bad, it just doesn't stand out from the rest of the crowd.

they have a few decent songs. none of them are on this album

Rock isn't my genre, and this album did nothing to change my mind. None of these songs sounded nice. I heard some truly awful sounds in a few of them. In some of the songs, the music was too loud to hear the lyrics. It was just all over the place. To be honest, I was expecting more from the Foo Fighters. Unpleasant.

Didn’t love this and wasn’t the best road trip music! There were a few more melodic songs I enjoyed, such as Big Me, which I thought was the best song on the album.

Can we suss a good one soon please

Not bad but lacking real creativity in my opinion. Some songs, in particular “Floaty”, reminded me a lot of Weezer’s blue album, which was released the year before and is far better. Best track: Floaty

I have listened to the Foo Fighters before, but not this album. Listening conditions: Driving to work for the first few songs. The rest gardening on a Saturday morning. Ngl all the songs kinda just merged together for me. Very background drown out the thoughts vibe. This is the only review I have written fully after I finished listening to the album, and that made me realise how forgettable every song was. I’m a little surprised because I have some Foo fighters songs on my playlists. I wish I could give it a 2.5. Feeeling annoyed to this shit is getting a 2

Kurt died for this.

meh, a bit of a snooze

A super generic rock album where every single song sounds the same. Also the Foo Fighters best album.

not for me, not nirvana sounding enough :/

Funny that I get this album right after The Germs. Guess it’s Pat Smear week over here. I always loved that this album existed. It was the nirvana continuance that I needed. “I’ll Stick Around” is the lead track and Grohl definitely stuck around. I’ve always loved that track. In the end though, this has too much of the noisy rhythm guitar that classifies 90s butt rock for my taste. They switch it up a bit with “Big Me” and find their Nirvana groove with “Alone + Easy Target” but it isn’t enough for me to voluntarily spin it.

Ow my head

I love Nirvana, but this has much more of a noisy grunge vibe, which doesn’t resonate as much for me.

very mid

Listened once and didn't feel like listening again.

First listen. Not my kind.

I quite like the big songs but have never really got the Foo Fighters. Listened to it 3 times and still did not spark a reaction. I like Dave G but can take or leave this.

The wet bread of rock music. I like to imagine Kurt killing himself again while listening to this. Occasionally there are some decent tunes though, deeply buried beneath Dave Grohl's very very mediocre vocals and zero personality. Also stupid-ass band name. Literally so average I can't even give it a 1⭐

I was not impressed with this album other than the backstory. I didn't really get into any of the songs, I found them a bit grating and unpolished (while fully recognizing the purpose and setup of this recording). I've never been a big fan of Foo Fighters, although I do really like Dave Grohl, so this did nothing to convince me further. "Weenie Beenie" is terrible, "Big Me" is good, the rest fall somewhere in between. 2.45 for smashing drums and high energy.

I'm a little surprised this album made the list as Foo Fighters has a lot of other work that far exceed the self-titled debut. I imagine nearly all of the consideration is due to the fact that Dave Grohl was able to throw this together on his own in a matter of about a week. It's an accomplishment no doubt, but I was surprised how basic and stripped down parts of this album are. Some of the tracks are little more than a demo tape with placeholder lyrics that never got fleshed out. The lone cool aspect is that you can clearly hear the groundwork laid for what Foo Fighters would grow into. Foo Fighters deservedly became one of the iconic rock bands of the 90's and beyond and have remained relevant for 25+ years. I don't dislike Foo Fighters debut album but I don't personally think it is a good representation of their work. Props to Dave Grohl for being able to rise from the ashes of the end of Nirvana and grow into the prototype for the modern rock star. I'm a big Foo Fighters fan but nearly all songs off this album get a skip from me when shuffling through their discography. 2.32 stars

Relativ langweilig, kein Lied positiv hervorgestochen. Teilweise sogar Lärmbelästigung - Good Grief.

2 stars for the importance and the impressiveness of Grohl writing and performing all parts. But the Foo Fighters have never really been my thing. Post Grunge just isn’t my favorite style.

Rock just isnt my thing

I was not familiar with this band. Most of the music falls in what I consider the loud and annoying to listen to music. I make an exception with the songs 'Big Me' and 'For All the Cows'.

FAVO: This is a call, Big Me

As the quintessential American dad rock band, the Foo Fighters are one of those artists who have a lot of material and only 2 good albums. This isn't one of those albums. I had to stop 4 songs in to see if *those* 2 albums were any good. Yup. Everlong and Monkey Wrench still rip. So what gives?

kinda boring NNN

I've never been a huge fan, but this just sounded very repetitive and boring to me. Appreciate that he did all the instruments and singing but they've just never really done it for me aside from a few songs.

Unimaginative and shallow

It’s an ok album.

My mom is obsessed with the Foo Fighters so I found it funny to realize that she hasn’t listened to this album at all and was only familiar with “This is a call”, I don’t feel like she’s really missing out though. Personally I only really liked “Big me” and “For the Cows” and while each song had parts that I liked, especially “Exhausted”, the parts of the songs that I didn’t like are overpowering, especially that guitar all throughout “Exhausted” which just kind of tortured my ears. The problem that I have with this album is that it feels too messy and could probably have benefited from some refinement and a less is more mindset, I also wouldn’t mind if they stopped hiding Grohl’s voice behind all of the instruments because at certain points he’s really hard to hear.

Doofer Rock. 1,6

Foo Fighters have never been my thing. There’s obvious talent and well crafted songs. But I’m just bored the entire time. 2.5/5

Watered down grunge. One dimentional and repetetive. I can't help but be mostly bored throughout this. The first half is so much stronger than the second half. Best song: This Is a Call Worst song: Watershed

Not my jam but I can appreciate their skills. 2

The drumming is the standout for me on this album. This Is a Call is such a kickass start to the record. Their most Nirvana-inspired record, which makes sense being their debut. I'll stick around reminds me of early Offspring. By the time you get to Good Grief this album starts to grate on me. A case of each song sounding the same. A good record to crank all the way up and drink some garage beers to. 6.9/10

I just don’t get the appeal of foo fighters. It sounds so boring to me

Generischer Rock. Langweilig.

I hate to say it, but this album seems kinda generic now. I played it for my teenage son, thinking that he's really the right age for it, and his response was ehhh, it's all right. Damning with faint praise.

I don’t like goo foghets

Just no. Foo Fighters are your Gym teacher’s favourite band. The favourite band of your distant cousin who’s “really into his music”. Decked out in a plaid shirt and scraggly beard, the Foo Fighters fan is the kind of guy who memorises album sale statistics before the song lyrics. If you’re under the age of 36 and still listening to this band, god help you. Just tragic. Like a bread sandwich or a pint of air, Dave Grohl’s songwriting has always just struck me as the most offensively inoffensive tosh you could possibly listen to. And from a guy who is a genuine music fan with some serious trauma in the business, his lack of insight is unpardonable. Ironically, I think this Foo Fighters record almost belongs on this list, since while the band has since become a soulless corporate behemoth churning out throwaway stadium anthems, on this record they actually sound like a band. And the irony, of course, is that this is the only record they recorded where they weren’t actually a band. Grohl is in complete control here and, shock horror, it isn’t terrible. In fact, if you told me “Good Grief” was a lost cut from Guided by Voices I would have completely believed it. The trouble is that for every decent song, there are about three or four which just clog up your sound waves. A microcosm of Foo Fighters’ career, if you throw enough shit at the mixing desk something is bound to stick - but don’t shove it down our throats and pretend we like the taste of said shit. On the whole, not good (but about half as bad as I expected, which is good). Got it?

Not a massive fan 4/10

Not their best. Gotta start somewhere though. Seeing it live is better than this production.

I remember this record as the very end of MTV. Musically it's not all that though.

Keine große Weiterentwicklung gegenüber Nirvana.

Alright enough. Don't care to listen to again.

Foo Fighters? More like, the uh, Poo Fighters! Dave Grohl's "confession" gave me yet another reason to dislike the band. I'm not big on Nirvana (the "parent" band) to begin with, and Foo Fighters is even more loud and substanceless.

If rock music was a roasted pig, the foo fighters would be a thinly sliced ham from a packet. It's so vanilla, its so bland. It needs salt, it needs flavour, it needs something

If you wanted a 1995 grunge sound, this is exactly that. Kinda weird to get this album only a day after Dave Grohl came out that he had a child out of wedlock. It wasn't bad but nothing stood out as amazing. I probably will not revisit this album.

Over rated, how did they get as popular from that debut album

I honestly thought it was boring, especially by Foo Fighters standards. A couple of good licks but nothing stuck out to me.

If it wasn't for the fact that Dave Grohl was in Nirvana, this album would rightly go completely unnoticed. It's not bad, it's just mediocre.

3.55 mun pippeli.. mun pilis on niiin VITUSTI iilimatoi............ tylsää kakkelia kakkihätä......kakkihätä..... PYYHKIMÄÄN!!!!!!!!.... PYYYHKIMÄÄÄN!!!!!!!! food fighters.. fat dave grohl! bulk fighters.... noh emt ehkä parantuu tämä bändi mutta en kuuntele haha pakko tulla vastaan täällä heh.... ai ei tule heh ok...... exhausted

peepee doodoo fighters. unserious and dave grohl cheated on his wife !

Every song sounds exactly the same: mid

I don't think I had ever heard any of these FF songs except big me. You can tell the ingredients for FF are in here, but this is not them at their prime. 2* Highlights: big me

dont like it

Not for me 2/5

"buzzy" rock, nothing grabbed me too much

There are better Foo Fighters albums.

🎧This does basically nothing for me, except for Big Me which is actually an excellent song

I'm a huuuge FF fan but a despite that album

this album is meh. I want to like the Foo Fighters, but they don't do much for me outside a handful of songs, none of which are on this album.

They got better later at least

Not my jam.

Nothing that I’d care to revisit—though polished, it just sounds unexceptional.

Never been into Foo Fighters and this didn't convince me I've been missing out. Nothing wrong with the album it was just incredibly generic.

Every song sounds so washed out, thid is a call gets interesting towards the end but goes nowhere with it and then the song ends. Nothing on the album sounds as hard, sharp or punchy as it should. Instead of a hearty stew of hard it is the auditory equivalent of dirty dishwater. Weenie Beenie is definitely the best track by a mile as it doesn't sound like milquetoast watered down hard rock and actually has a little edge and punch. Cool album cover though. An album from an artist at a time it couldn't fail. The fact that this is even remotely compared to anything Nirvana put out is a joke. Listen to Milk by Nirvana and then anything off this album and tell me it's even remotely comparable. Mid production at best. Didn't help that after this album finished a them crooked vulture track came on and immediately shat on everything in this album. Fav tracks - Good Grief, Floaty, Weenie Beanie, Watershed, Exhausted Least Fav - This is a Call, I'll Stick Around, Big Me, Alone + Easy Target, Oh George, For All The Cows

Very good debut album by a great band.

Quite mid. Weak songs/songwriting. Gotta start somewhere 🤷

Really not my jam, as I think the young people would have it. Didn’t hate it mind, just felt a bit “yeah whatever” about the experience.

These fellows are undeniably skilled, and something from them absolutely deserves to be on a list like this because they have been as present and impactful on the music scene as anyone can be. But why this album? It didn't have anything close to what I'd call their best. I've appreciated their skill for many years, and Dave seems to be one of the nicest, coolest guys on the planet, but unfortunately I've rarely enjoyed their music. This album didn't change that. I'd LIKE to like it, but I felt nothing but a sigh of relief once the album finally ended. For All the Cows had some fun charm during the verses, but it lost my interest during the chorus. I'm glad this project encouraged me to give it a spin. Perhaps one day my ears, my brain, will shift and open anew to their work.

★★½

This was one of the first CDs I ever bought, and I was desperate to like it. It was the guy from Nirvana so it had to be good. And the music video was so goofy and fun. But that's all it was in the end, a novelty act with good pedigree but not much in terms of musical ideas or memorable songs. I wasn't mad, just disappointed. Nowhere near as good as the other mid 90s alt rock radio staples, but they somehow outlasted them all became one of the longest running most beloved bands of the last 30 years, which I'll never understand, they're so boring and generic. A band for people who've heard of rock music and like the idea of it. An album for big fans of room temperature water. Even saying that, I'd put The Color and the Shape on the list because there are some much stronger songs on that, but this album is just factory settings post-Grunge. Every mildly good moment on this album sounds just like something Weezer or Smashing Pumpkins or Stone Temple Pilots or Bush or whatever other band from the time did way better. Favorites: Floaty, exhausted, this is a call

This was fun but I found it to be highly irrelevant. Forgot I was listening to it most of the time. Most boring rock I've heard

Like Foo Fighters, but not this album

Good musicianship from an absolute legend. Poor songwriting/production prevents this record from being any masterpiece. 2 stars.

Meh. Don’t care for it

niektore spoko ale nic do zapisania, w porownaniu do pozniejszych utworow to slabiutko

Well done, I've just always felt pretty meh about Foo Fighters.

The second album is better. This is really underwhelming after the first couple of tracks.

Foo Fighters aren’t really my thing

Pretty poppy - I expected stuff more like Nirvana. But very samey?

Fitting that I get this around the 30th Anniversary of Kurt Cobain's passing. Who knows what Cobain's life and career would have rewarded the world had he lived longer. But I know one thing for certain, and it's that Kurt Cobain would joyfully shit on the Foo Fighters every chance he could. He would have loathed them in the way that John Lennon hated Wings. And it would have been glorious. And it would probably be enough to change the world's opinion of the Foo Fighters. Maybe everyone would have their eyes opened to the fact that their just REO Speedwagon by way of The Wallflowers.

Meh, not really for me.

This feels like what you get when you ask AI to make a rock album.

Ok, nothing more, nothing less

isn't it that even diehard fans consider this first album a piece of s**t?

it is amazing Dave was able to make this album on his own to this level of performance and production. Doesn't make it good though.

Kinda badass by Dave Grohl that he did this alone, but I don't care, that doesn't make this better to listen to. An extremely generic album with very weak vocals. I couldn't hear what this guy was humming under his nose half the time, for god's sake. I would probably give an extra star if this had another singer, but this weak it's just a strong 2.

Yet another collection of alternative male angst that could be replaced by more intricate, international music (perhaps even - gasp - by a woman?!) Coming from someone who digs grunge/hardcore.

Why this Foo Fighters album??? It's totally passable, but it literally sounds like a man without a band. There's moments, sure, but...this doesn't feel like it's even a good representation of the band. It exists in the grunge/post-grunge grey area, but also lacks the the 90s emo aesthetic the SDRE members would bring once they joined, and those elements are important to the band's overall sound. Although I get it if you're looking for historical documentation of the post-grunge sound, but I don't even know if it's actually the correct historical document to point to (Live's "Throwing Copper" or even Bush's debut would be better inclusions over this for that purpose) Also, The Color and the Shape are *right fucking there*!! Not like it's a flawless album, but by comparison! Aside from "Big Me," this album is completely dismissible. I will forget about this record by tomorrow, which shows how important the next album is to the Foo Fighter's legacy.

I heard of them though I don't know any songs. Most of the songs just sound like noise!

Nothing mind blowing or exciting.

There's nothing special here. I'll Stick Around is pretty much the only Foo Fighters song I've ever liked, and even that isn't special. Can't give it a One because it isn't annoying or offensive. Just boring. It's fun to say "foo FIGHTers the way Christopher Walken did though.

Rock, Hard-Rock, 1995 -> 2

Some of the lyrics actually killed a few of my brain cells (see, e.g., the "fingernails are pretty" section of song 1). Musically seemed unremarkable. I predict it won't have a lasting legacy.

I'm sure I would've liked this in '95 but I'm sick of them here in '24

4.5/10 Really wasn’t a fan of FF before, still am not but this was better than expected More musical variation than I thought there would be, although still dominated by riffy grungey punky rock He really knows his way around round a melody, and major respect for playing pretty much everything on the album The mix was very strange on this: often the instruments merged into sludge, and his vocals were a bit lower than the lyrics should be, disappearing a bit (was he nervous about his vocals on the first album?) Best: Big Me

A little too hard rock for me.

This is the wrong Foo Fighters album to be in the book. The Colour and the Shape should be here instead. Also, Foo Fighters are overrated. They're not terrible and Dave Grohl seems like a cool dude but there's nothing extraordinary about them. They're just there. On top of that, this album seems kind of jokey and I can't take it too seriously.

not for me

Too generic

Nee bedankt, veel herrie

.... stop the pain. This is surely on the list of boring records generated so far. It's early so I'm not sure where it lands on that list but right now it's at the top right under Hot Fuss. 1.5

it's impressive that this was a studio project by one person and sounds like an actual (boring) grunge band I've heard enough Foo Fighters for a lifetime just by being anywhere near a radio in the 00s, so I skimmed through. I think this is a little better than the radio hits music: hated. (⌐■_■)

I read a bit about this one before listening to it. The background made me think, “Well this one should be kind interesting!” and then… it wasn’t. Grohl seems like an interesting and talented guy. How is it possible that every Foo Fighters recording tastes like tap water??

It was interesting to hear the transition from Nirvana Dave Grohl to the Dave Grohl of later Foo Fighter hits. I had only minor familiarity with a few songs on the album going in. Solid overall but did not wow me

Meh. Yeah, that covers it, meh. It’s just grunge or garage band mediocrity. There’s one good track on the album (Big Me) where the lyrics and an actual melody are discernible and the rest just screaming or mumbling while the drummer bangs loudly and the guitar is played in a loud grating string of disassociated notes. This era was of a time and place and was never of broad appeal and now 25 years in the rear view is neither classic nor enjoyable.

Ah, Dave Grohl's upstart new band and 29 years later, I still think that! I think DG must have been gutted with the direction Cobain was taking Nirvana, so when all that went bang, this was the result. Which was something pretty much an oven ready radio friendly rock album with a not particularly sharp edge. It's OK, loud when it needs to be and quiet when it needs a contrast to Grohl's rather bland guitar playing. But it, like all Foo Fighters material, it is missing that 'edge' to make it truly something great. Some great tunes though, like 'This is a Call', but I thought the last 2 tracks were the best as there seemed like a tiny hint of experimentation going on. It gets a mid 2.

This is an album I NEED to listen to before I die? THIS one? Who made this list? Good Grief is the only tolerable one in the lot. Not saying the band are bad musicians, just not great songwriters -- plus the production is awful. 2/5

It was ok

I'm very disappointed by this album. I like some of the songs from their newer releases, they are usually pretty simple, but very entertaining. Perfect for a rock party night in the background. This album nailed the "pretty simple" part, but definitely is far from the entertaining section. Listening to this record was nauseating, with the same tempo, same rhythm, copy->paste style. This records level was very even, although that level was well below average. You could hear that Dave Grohl composed it on his own, because for sure he needs someone to just say "no" to few of his ideas. Confusing choice for this list, to say the least.

Big Me and For All the cows were the only outstanding songs, feels repetitve though a own-style is clearly present

Echo everyone else questioning why this is their only album that makes the list. I saw them live in 2018, and the only song they played from this one was This Is a Call. That still stands up as part of their repertoire, but the rest of this album really feels like they're trying to find a groove that suits them. They try a few different flavours here (more raw, metal type stuff than they move towards later on) and most of them don't work pretty well. It's kinda interesting as an early point in their journey, but a baffling inclusion as their only representation here. 2/5.

Krach, erinnert an Green day etc.

kinda just sounds like generic rock, like if you asked an AI to generate the most generic rock sounds, this would come out. It was my first time hearing this album, but it’s my least favorite of their discography.

Weenie Beenie is way too metal screaming… folding laundry to rest of songs was dec.

Big Me was a decent song. Weenie Beenie was too screamo for me. I didn't really like this album. It was a little too underground rock for me. It seemed like a new band trying to find the type of music that they want to make. I also didn't like the vocals, I never felt like the songs meant anything.

forgettable

Fine but forgettable

"Alexa, play me some generic rock"

It's fine. The story of the album is better than the contents on it. Pretty safe rock throughout with some stuff branching out more. Will I listen to again: 5%

Good evergthing, but always forgettable

"Alone + Easy Target" has some Nirvana vibes, tracks leading up to this one were kinda bland though, feels like dad rock a bit, the other tracks after that are more grungy again

Never listened to foo fighters before surprisingly. Cant say im a fan. This sounds like if i prompted AI to make the most generic sounding garage rock imaginable.

Not for me really.

About as bad as their name

I like Foo Fighters but I clearly like their more popular songs. This album wasn’t my favorite

2.5 pretty middling

Seems it took Dave Grohl around 12 months from the death of Kurt Cobain to get from behind the drum kit to fronting a full length album. That's that quick it almost seems insensitive. Saying that there must have been some pre planning. Never been an "album band" but has a few tracks that would stand the test of time. There's definitely some Nirvana influence in places but, I mean, who else? Influences go about everywhere second half. Listening to it all objectively though, it's very much okay. Nothing on Nirvana, but it wasn't going to be. As a lot of Cobains demons were inspired somewhat by overcomercialism, Foo Fighters, especially this first album, are almost a cynical "I told you so" from beyond the grave. It slips nicely right between early Blink records and other US pop-punk from the mid 90s. People love it. But right there is the line between creating for art and expression, or for product. Who knows for sure? 2/5 Sot: This Is a Call I'll stick around Big Me Good grief

I'm pretty big on alternative music, grunge..everything from the 90's as those were my formative years. I can apreciate this album for what it is (a Dave Grohl solo album, his first outing after his friend and bandmate Cobain died which also led to the disbandenment of Nirvana, arguable the most iconic rock band of the 90's) This is..not their best album. It's nice for what it is, but it lacks punch. Mediocre, but the band would go on to do much better things.

Overall - 4/10 1. This Is a Call - 5/10 2. I'll Stick Around - 4/10 3. Big Me - 5/10 4. Alone + Easy Target - 4/10 5. Good Grief - 4/10 6. Floaty - 4/10 7. Weenie Beenie - 3/10 8. Oh, George - 4/10 9. For All the Cows - 4/10 10. X-Static - 4/10 11. Wattershed - 4/10 12. Exhausted - 3/10

Pretty generic rock, not bad per se but not particularly interesting either. Most Foo fighter albums have one or two hits but not enough to hold up for a whole album. None of my favourites are on this album. One can hear clear grunge influences and it's like halfway between "Nirvana" and the sound that "Foo Fighters" got known for. I also enjoyed the feeling of the album not being too polished. Not a fan of the mixing though which sounded compressed.

The Foo Fighters have made a lot of songs that i really like, but i had never listened to this album before. Honestly, this album is really not that good, none of the songs here really grabbed me and as an album it gets boring really quickly. At least they got better on their next album.

First time listening to Foo Fighters? Not my cup of tea I really dont like "exhausted" - the static is just annoying and quite jarring the rest of the album kinda grew on me with time tho? I don't think I'll revist it, but I can see the appeal.

Liked a couple songs

Pleasantly surprised first 2 songs but then got abit repetitive and samey. Lyrics not that deep or expressed well and riffs all merge into each other. Thought it has potential for a relisten at first but nah. Slog to get through 4/10

Very unpolished album. You can definitely tell it's a first album. Never been a fan of FF and if this had been the sound he would have stayed with, I would have never listened to any others from him. I would not recommend this album but maybe some of his other, more polished albums. 2/5 stars

J: - not my taste, but not bad - I honestly liked the more heavy songs more than the classic rock style ones - bit boring, songs seemed pretty similar, the album wasn't super flowy WW: - this was pretty generic. I might have liked it more if I listened to it more immersively (aka two headphones) but literally nothing was memorable for me. - might have been more appropriate for a more adolescent angsty time, but my adolescence went to metal for that so idk if this was heavy enough for me.

I was a Nirvana fan as a teen. When the Foo Fighters became I thing, I hated them on principle. I avoided listening to them for quite some time — it was everlong you might say (although you're probably better off not making that pun). This record was okay. Honestly, I don't think I missed much by avoiding them early. I've heard some other material that's better than this. Humble beginnings I guess.

They have published better albums than this one, I feel.

Very boring and derivative. Not terrible but not anything I'd want to listen to regularly.

I was really shocked I didn't recognize any of the songs on this one. Feels like a mix of foo fighters and grunge. No real stand out songs, but no unpleasant. 2.5

Tjoooo startede ok men blev kun værre

Boring

What a shame. Track 1 had me thinking I was going to love this album. It had what I often miss in rock music- a strong melody. In this album, Foo Fighters display a tendency towards strong melodies while still being high energy and rocky. And not only are the melodies strong, they are distinctive. I've never heard an artist or band that writes melody the way they do. This is especially evident on track 1, "This Is a Call." It's also evident in the verses of most of the track list. However, on the rest of the track list, I didn't enjoy the choruses. They tried really hard to contrast the melodic verses with discordant, annoying shouting. I can't remember which song it is, but one of the worst choruses was literally just shouting "hate you" over and over again. "This Is a Call" is the only track that doesn't do the shouting thing, and the chorus is really good, melodic and very catchy. It also completely dissolves into just metal growling on "Weenie Beenie" (which is also a stupid song title). Luckily, they manage to recover it a bit after that, although the song about cows was laughable. I vaguely remember enjoying some of the other tracks towards the end, but I'd already lost interest by then. To be fair, I wasn't really in the mood for listening to an album today and wasn't giving it my full attention. However, this album also just wasn't good enough to keep my interest all the way through. I'd already given up on it even BEFORE "Weenie Beenie" assaulted my ears. Favourite track: This Is a Call

I’d want a more defined sound like colour and shape

Like the loud rockier numbers but the slower ballad song are pretty forgettable.

First song good, mostly too grungy not melodically pleasing enough.

Just so, so busy. Super energetic and obviously inspired, but damn if it isn’t hard for me to feel like it’s the same song on repeat.

can't remember this tbh but i think it was mid

Debut FF album and nice guy D Grohl writes and plays it all. A bit dull and repetitive. Nice guy though. 2nd album should be on here instead of this.
