Reviews (page 13 of 13)

A couple tracks were alright. Most of it feels like an angry 12 year old child of divorce got the Tom Hanks’s “Big” experience. And also, hidden tracks suck! Songs that I didn’t dislike: keep em separated, self esteem (this has bad romance intro).

Hooray! Corporate “punk” rock. Fuck this bullshit. Why is this even on the list? The Black Album is way better than this crap.

I hated this when it first came out and that has not changed in any way with time

OVERALL: 2/10 Not my type of music Nitro (Youth Energy): Strong intro. Didn’t resonate with me though. Bad Habit: Nice rage song. Gotta Get Away: gym song. Genocide: not catching my attention, sonically. Something to Believe In: same as the last. Come Out and Play: ok. Self Esteem: Eh. It’ll Be a Long Time: Not my type of music. Killboy Powerhead: Wow, I do not like this type of music 😃. What Happened to You: Nice guitar. So Alone: Lowkey sounds like the last song. I like that it’s short. Gym song. Not the One: I think I like this one. Glad I saw it through. Smash: :/ yea nah

My first 0.5 of the year

I can not in good conscience offer this a rating due to it being unutterably appalling, however I fear the system will require me to award it one star, thus putting the album on a par with the dreadful efforts by AC/DC and Alanis, when unfeasibly it is actually quite a lot worse. Tom. Rubbish - Charlotte

No thanks.

There were so many better pop punk bands musically and the singer makes most of the songs unlistenable. I avoided listening to them on purpose for 30 years. Thanks.

1/5 no fav songs not for me at all!! not much to say just kind of skipped through all the songs because I didn't vibe with them.

GOING IN: Dreading it properly LISTENED WHILE: afternoon lounging FAMILIARITY: Know the artist, not the album SKIP RATE: Skipped half of it REPLAY VALUE: Once was plenty DISCOVERY CURVE: Never happened ALBUM ARC: Pretty even, consistent VERDICT: Fair enough BODY'S VERDICT: Statue mode My Rating: 1

Not good for me

Not my kind of music.

no lo escuché....

I really don’t have the energy today to ignore the vocals. Seems that they were influential, but not all influence is positive. I don’t want to hear this even a little bit again.

awful horrible noise

Ugh. Terrible

What a giant slog it was to get through this album. I love Gotta Get Away, but I fucking hate Self Esteem and Keep Em Separated. They’re in my list of most hated songs of all time. This album sums up the sound of every dumbass thirteen year old boy thinking they’re the shit, when in reality, they ain’t shit. What bothers me about this record is how whiny and awful the lead singers voice is, how annoying the hooks are, and how pre/early teen immature this music is. Granted, there is an audience for that, but I'm not it. Big pass here, except for Gotta Get Away.

Really poor album. I love punk rock but they ain't it

Like a few songs by them. Not this album though.

Herrie, soms lekker met "Come Out and Play" / "Self Esteem" niet voor tijdens het werk

I was correct to never listen to this album. Although I wonder if music snobs hated the Sex Pistols as much as I dislike this punk/ska/pop nonsense?

Man this really pissed me off

The stupidest album ever made. This band is even worse than I thought, and they’re already my least favorite band.

WoooooooooooooAhhh woooooooooaaaaaaaaaooooohhhhh. I think self esteem is kind of the platonic ideal of what these guys do. Really dumb lyrics I don’t mind the guitar stuff the vocals are really annoying. Always double tracked and singing at the absolute edge of vocal range always. Ska song was like if Sublime sucked even more.

Considering that Americans pretty much invented the genre, 90s skate / pop punk genre was a real low point in punk's history. I wasn't a fan at the time and I think The Offspring were significantly worse than Green Day or NOFX. On listening to Smash for the first time in 30 years, it was significantly worse than I remember. I didn't think it would be a one, but it is utter garbage.

Couldn’t finish

💩💦🚽

this was the height of me hating 90s popular music and it hasn't changed

Takes me back to the early 90s but I don't want to go. 👎

too boring, skipping

Crazy taxi, I think. Now that I listened to The Offspring a substantial amount I realize the lead singer approaches each song the same to a point of it being annoying. Very one-note. Not all bad, but boy that detracts from everything.

Ellers tak

doodie ass

Laut! Sonst nix!

I see the appeal just not mine self esteem was good just felt like a lot of mush

No grippyness to this album. 1/10

Their third album. Punk Rock. Parody Punk. Utter shit ! Vocally annoying, lyrically pathetic and musically flat. Forty six minutes was forty five minutes too long. No stand out track. I've listened, no need to come back again.

nao gostei mto

The whole album sounds like a tuning session. Then the vocals come in and the off button was reached. Not much more to say other than resist!

Not my thing Favourite song: Bad Habit

Should not be on any list.

If you want to listen to this, go for it. If you want to absorb it, go for it. If you need it, I feel sorry for you. I always hear 'punk rock,' but this is anything but 'punk rock.' It's some kind of American slapstick. 'Offspring': Yes, I've heard the band name somewhere, but I can't remember any of the songs. Nothing on 'Smash' sounds familiar to me, and I definitely won't listen to it again.

From the Offspring’s Spotify entry: “They are widely considered to be the iconic innovators of the southern California punk rock sound.“ It even says at the bottom “Posted by The Offspring”. Talk about vainglorious! There is plenty more I could say about that quote not to mention all the other California punk rock bands that are so much better than the Offspring… I’ll just say this, 1 star only because I can’t give this one 0 stars.

I really hate this album. This is no stars rounded up to 1 for me. I really hate Dexter’s voice and his cadence for every song on this album. It’s not ok to have just call your guitarist, “Noodles.” It’s a very overrated album and the hit single was way overplayed. Yes, there’s a lot of personal bias here. But remember Rancid’s “Let’s Go” album came out the same year and it’s far superior album. Do yourself a favor and go listen to it instead of the Offspring.

This one might’ve hit hard with teens in the ’90s punk scene, but for me, the Offspring’s sound, especially the vocals, just feels grating and chaotic in a way that doesn’t click with me.

I can’t explain the exact reason - maybe it’s the amateur lyrics, more likely the grating vocals, or even more likely that 90s alt radio played most of the songs on this album to death - but I HATE this album and this band more than most things in my life. There is no song more annoying than Come Out and Play, Self Esteem and Get Away - beat only by the terribly abused sample in Get a Job (diff album). I wanted to try today - to be open minded and give it space. Nope. I gave each song 20 seconds. This album and band sucked in 1994. They both really suck now. 1/5

uskomaton ylämäki tällä albumilla. maailman jyrkin ja pisin ehkäpä. aivan pohjamutien alla on ennen kuuntelukertaa mielipidä tälläisestä bändistä (olen kuullut yhden laulun aikaisemmin) ja mites teki.. nousiko edes ylös ja istahti takaisin. ei. meni suoraan makaamaan. tämä on paskaa. fucking disgusting band. woooooouauuaauaua uyeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa owoooooooooooouuuuuaa yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. tämä ei ole musikkkia. menkää kuunnelkaa räppiä niin saaatte jotain ideaa miltä kuulosta real music.. is rap music.. reael rap music.. wooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaeeeeeee aaaaaaaa ei paljoo sano laske SANAT LASKE MONTAKO SANAA TOSSA.. NOLLA. time to relax

No thanks

Typical punk, sounds like a monkey banging the drums incessantly and lots of shouting.

Shouty vocals. Repetitive guitar sound. Every track the same. Clearly of its time but hasn’t lasted.

There is no way I will listen to this ever.

Honestly not a bad album. I simply do not enjoy The Offspring. I like the one hit off this album, but this is not my sound.

wtf was this album? LMAO, seriously. firstly, it only let me play TWO songs, which were a completely shit. it felt like a joke jesus christ. at least i had fun but bc of how shit it was. the only “plus” is that one was in spanish so i could understand it better, however that was bad at the same time bc what the hell with the lyrics HAHAHA. anyway, i did not like neither of the two songs but i laughed!

sellouts

Never liked them, but I gave it a go. Garbage. It’s his voice but also everything else.

I heard this album upon its release back in my record store days. My reaction back then was, "Wow - this is absolute crap!" Listened to bits of it again, just to see if my opinion would change, and no. How an album of such generic reductive punk-but-not-too-punk, like this one gets on a list like this I don't understand. All of the bands that Offspring are ripping off deserve to be listed as influential, but this band doesn't have an original idea anywhere to be found. Utter dreck.

Felt like one loooong track.

I didn’t like this album up until Self Esteem, then I stopped liking it again. 3.5/10 woulda been better if Self Esteem and What Happened to You? weren’t the only decent songs and the last song has like 5 minutes of silence💔

2/10 cornball Jeremy music. Would rather be quartered than listen to this again.

i hate punk

Ok rock/punk band from the 90’s. Not my kind of music, but pretty fly for a white guy, is a catchy song.

Not a fan of the sound. You'd think I'd like this rock but it just was loud and not my style at all

I know some people wake up with this in the morning. I drove with this during the morning rush hour and I have to say that I often hear better music. So not recommended.

It was only nostalgia that kept me from abandoning this album.

Another one of those pointless American albums by a pointless American band! You may of invented rock’n”roll but this is trash! Not a single redeeming song, trash!

Sucks. About 45 minutes too long.

FAVO: What happened to you

I had to stop as soon as I self esteem came on. Couldn’t take anymore

oh my GOD 😭

Funny intro but nope

i have some nostalgia for self esteem but this sucks ass! and my spotify glitched when i tried to listen, fittingly

The album that made me quit this project for 14 months. Utter pish.

I can't take this... Their hearts are in the right place at least. Did you know Dexter Holland has a PhD in molecular biology?

First one I didn’t finish. Thought I might like it based on the album cover but seriously, all of the songs sounded the same to me so I got bored.

Lame band. And I hate this guy’s voice

Always hated this band. They felt like the boy band version of grunge and made solely for marketing executives to have Bukkake parties over. Maybe I was just too old and didn’t get it? Perhaps, but I do recall literally everyone at the time being more interesting and less annoying that these turds.

Nah I ain’t jacking this.

I feel like we're about to see some pretty significant taste differences in this group.

Could just as well be a 46 minute 44 second song. Once again an album of screaming incoherence with little or no variance between tracks. I am none the better having wasted time listening to this.

garbage then, garbage now

I know 3 chords, I can play them very fast and loud, and I can speak words at a rate so fast as to be indecipherable until the internet will be invented 20 years later. I can’t fathom how fucked up your life has to be to like this noise.

Aged cheese isn’t always a delicacy.

I really grew up liking the song Come Out and Play. Self Esteem never did it for me. The rest of this album is not good. Thin instrumentals with very similar songs throughout. The punk aesthetic is not appealing, the post-grunge aspects are grating, and the ska is obnoxious. Not one I'd ever listen to again. 1.4/5 -> 1/5

Meget anstrengende album at lytte til, men self esteem var fed nok

Sgu en udmattende plade, den er ikke SÅ lang men den føles lang. Der er egentlig en fed energi og nogen cool nok riffs, bare totalt ensformigt og elendige vokaler

I've always had a pretty bad relationship with Dexters vocals, and there's only a single song on this album that was actually "good" (Self-esteem).. But the God damn vocals killed it for me - Even though I got Tony Hawks Pro Skater vibes...

Wow this was awful. There's that one popular tune which is OK. And the intro base line on the 2nd track was cool. Otherwise hard pass.

Not looking forward to listening to this. Yep, this is bollocks

useful at least for defining the word "grating"

3/10 Highlights Self Esteem

Day 1 - June 2nd, 2024 I would rather listen to 2010's era Weezer at gunpoint than listen to this. This was garbage.

Horrible album. The only thing that isn’t forgettable about it is the singers voice which is incredibly annoying. As if it wasn’t bad enough they chucked a ska number in there. Yuck.

ja helemaal kut dit hoeft van mij niet

Absolute dogshit

I'm well over 1,001 albums so I'm just going to hate this one on spec. It's not like I don't already know the broad strokes. The so-called hits. Everything was going just fine in the '90's music wise, and then these fuckers started bellowing about self esteem and keeping shit separated. No thank you. Fittingly enough, this album was released about a week before Kurt Cobain killed himself. This album probably made him pull the trigger.

This is worse than I remember.

One of the worst albums I've ever heard. This kind of pop punk is really not my thing & just sounds incredibly dated now. Some of the riffs are cool but the vocals are just so hoarse and uninteresting. Best Song: Come Out And Play Worst Song: What Happened To You?

Truly awful

Not sure the point of this really. I listened to it and was none the wiser

Wenn man Headbanger Gitarrenrock mag...

This is Tony Hawk Music, which I would like when playing the game but wouldn’t listen outside playing. The only redeeming quality is the fact that I could see it used in the sync world easily. The thing for me is the album cover is so trash that I knew what to expect before listening. The melodies are so forgettable and pretty much all the same in every song. To the credit of the vocalist, I’m not sure what else you could sing over these chord progressions.

Not my cup of tea at all this side of American Punk, does nothing for me.

Not for me.

“Doing” an ollie in front of the garage on the skateboard you got for your 11th birthday original soundtrack. It’s more or less like including Baby Shark on the list, as this is not for adults.

Awful racket.

God this dude's voice bothers me to no end. So they layer it to make it even more unpalatable. This album... I was teetering between a 1 and a 2-star rating, and while a 1-star feels reactionary and maybe even petty, I didn't enjoy a minute of it. And I HATE the song "Self-Esteem." It's the proverbial nails on a chalkboard. Hasn't been a great week for me with these latest selections — I think my personal hell might be The Offspring opening for Kid Rock opening for The Offspring opening for Kid Rock....

3-3-2024 With the exception of the two singles, I couldn't tell you a single thing about any individual song on this album. The songs blend. Nothing is here to "keep it separated" they're all the same high energy bounce that I should like but don't with the same backing vocals. Whoa, whoaOah, whoAo

Unless it’s the song from Crazy Taxi , Offspring can Smash Off .

Including this record is a stain on all of the other listings.

This just goes to prove how different people are. Geographical, cultural and age differences mean this is just generic and unoriginal to me. The music is ok- I can hear other bands in there but it's just me.

Garbage

Nicht meine Musikrichtung

Not for me.

Not my jam

Unhearable

I think our first 1 is on the way…… I don’t take this lightly: I don’t like the offspring. This is the first album I truly dislike, if this cd was in a car I’d rather listen to the Dua Lipa on the radio or whatever…. Sorry boys :( Like there are some fine songs whatever but we desperately need casablancas to save us from this mid/greenday music 😭

The best part about this album was the nearly 10 minutes of silence between the title track and the hidden track at the end of the album. The second best thing about this album was the playlist Spotify conjured up following this album by playing actual good bands. The worst thing about this album was Dexter Holland's grating and irritating bro voice. I like punk. I did not like this album.

Awful singing, stupid lyrics, generic pop punk riffs. What’s not to dislike?

i feel like i can get my fix of this from early afi just fine…didn’t hate it. his vocals always put me off though. in 1994 it would’ve ripped but not in 2024 while i’m doing the dishes sadly

I don’t like it.

Rahhhhh

meh...

Not for me

The Offspring were in the right place at the right time and they rode the third wave of punk right to the top of the charts with the ubiquitous Come Out and Play and Self Esteem (which would be followed a few years later by two very annoying songs that haven’t aged well: Pretty Fly for a White Guy and Why Don’t You Get a Job). They wrote stupid catchy songs about simple concepts and people ate it up, but their recycled version of punk rock ethos is insincere and intolerable. They are basically the Weird Al Yankovic of punk and outside of the two decent singles, this album is a complete dud.

מעפן

Just really could not get into this. There's a couple "fun" Offspring songs, but the general production and singing is really off-putting to me.

Not for me

I wasn’t in the mood in 94 & I’m still not.

Just as annoying as when it was overplayed in 1994.

Hardship.

Oof, couldn't even listen to it.

THEY ALL SOUND THE SAME?? I DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE THAT DIFFERENT SONGS PLAYED??

Can't stand the singers voice

Ugh, not my thing at all. Had to skip forward on many of the tracks. I'd rather punk stayed punk rather than staying into pop territory.

completley unappealing to me - couldnt wait for it to end but I suppose it will appeal to some

I'd give it less than one if I could.

Not a fan

Not my kind of music

Sounds like Motörhead for some reason but without the tightness. The sound of "Smash" is loose, loud, and annoying. Like an electric drill. It's an interesting take on punk/grunge, but the overall sound made me want to... you know, SMASH something? It does feel harsh giving it a 1, but I really hated this album enough to do it. The annoying chugging-train sound of punk plus the grating grunge voice? I hated it, I'm sorry.

Monotone shouty din.

Shrill and shouty. Not Good

Terrible

Self Esteem is a legitimately good song. Come Out and Play is annoyingly catchy. The rest of this album is glam punk nonsense. It is remarkable that this is the best selling independent album of all time.

1/5 Not the worst but not 1001 albums to hear before you die More hardcore than Green Day Less 'joke band' than what I know Some ska (just 1 track 1 think)

no. hate it

Not a fan.

sooo sick of these types of albums. I don’t want to take all my anger out on just this one, but if we get another one within the week i’m going to lose it.

With having to revisit so many faux-angsty 90s loud no dynamics super high tempo distortion drenched power chords shouty vocal albums of late, I'm no longer wondering why mainstream guitar rock died. File under: boring (see also: awful). 2/10 1 star

Why does anyone need to hear this before he or she dies?

Really boring 2 Ok I actually hate this 1

Didn't listen.

THPS vibes, good memories, 2/10 not my style

This is some dumb*ss sh*t.

It’s just bad.

I am not the target market. Exuberant mediocrity.

Ekki hægt ad gefa null stjörnur.

Quite a classic 90s rock sound, not for me

Sounds and riffs are good at times. But it doesn't engage me. I am probably not the demographic they were thinking of. To my ears it feels vacuous and staged emotion. it has no relation to punk for me. Cover art 2/5 corny

Oh no do I have to

Not for 37 year old me

Urgh. Lazy and loud.

Fantastic

It's albums like this that make me unsure of the book's intentions. Surely there are 1001 rock albums alone better than this. The songs are indistinguishable yelling sessions about nothing over boring rhythmic guitar and drums. Nirvana with worse musicians and worse lyrics

It all sounds the same

not my style

solo la del anuncio de pepsi, ni siquiera se si está en este album

You gotta keep ‘em constipated! Pfffffarrrrrrt.

it's ok

starting now.

Liked a decent amount of the songs a lot. A couple were kinda bad like 'Killboy Powerhead'. Audio quality is definitely dated. Would've appreciated a but more variety in the album, but it was good for what it was.

Time to relax caught me off guard Nitro (youth energy) is punchy and quintessential 90s punk rock Bad Habit- Scott Pilgrim vs the world vibes also any movie where there’s a teen girl listening to punk because she’s quIrky I have stopped listening I can’t say I’m a fan of this kind of punk music idk American punk isn’t my fave
