I didn't listen to this type of music when young, so it doesn't resonate with me from a nostalgia perspective, nor now from an enjoyment perspective. I see some merits, but not enough for a higher score.

That didn't do it for me.

Highlights: "Self Esteem," "Come Out and Play" It's easy to accept this as the inception of 90s pop punk along with Dookie. It's harder to accept this as the best selling indie album ever. It's not because it's a fresh outside voice though. It's easy to understand its success as a use of popular influences. "Self Esteem" is very Nirvana, but it was surprising at how much Metallica is in here -- not so much harmonically, but in the rhythms and timbres, from the guitars to the quasi-Hetfield vocals. They always have little dashes of Latin in their stuff, seemingly as a bad gag, so I was trying gauge their relationship to it here. I'd never read/understood the lyrics to "CoaP" before, so thinking about a bunch of seemingly white guys talk about putting away the colors and doing a exotica snake dancer riff for some reason seemed very Clintonite "superpredators" liberal for a punk album. Same goes for the penultimate song talking about how they weren't responsible for polluting the air when the album's first two songs are about souping up cars and road rage. Much like the jarring MIDI-like mixing of backup vocals on "Bad Habit," it's so bad it's funny. Mainstream punk is a nice metonym for the feckless liberalism of this decade, and this album is a nice metonym for mainstream punk.

No lo escuché entero, pero es ese rock de sonidos demasiado estridentes que parecen más actitud que música. Igual, tampoco es que la música y la actitud se puedan separar tan fácil. Nirvana no sería lo mismo sin cierta actitud de Kurt. Pero si él no gritaba siempre, vos por qué sí? Si gritas solo por el rock, capaz que después terminas tipo Dave Grohl.

Disco recontra famoso y con canciones divertidas, me gustó especialmente "Come Out and Play" y "What Happened to You?". Dicho esto, no me atrae para nada la voz del cantante, y hasta me parece molesta a veces. Prefiero lejos otros discos y otras bandas punk antes que esta, y no lo escucharía en mi tiempo libre a excepción de algunas canciones selectas. Si diera el rating por cuan bueno es el disco intentando ser lo más objetivo posible le daría más, pero estoy dando por cuánto me gusta a mí. 4/10

So yeah the Nineties and Epitaph Records equals Bad Religion to me. I was into Bad Religion in particular and punk in general enough to buy other releases from Epitaph around this time, but I never got into OFFSPRING. The track Come Out and Play meant you couldn't really escape them at the time. It just wasn't for me then. A little too pop and a little too slick but this was a time (teenage years) when you'd cut a band from your listen list for even a sliver of deviation from your personal aesthetics and ideals. Saying OFFSPRING wasn't for me then just means they were one of many bands who had some serviceable songs and reasonable records that I just rejected outright. Listening again, the vocals are overstrained and mixed a little too high for my taste but at least I can acknowledge it's not a terrible record. (Let's not overstate the case for this being a good album though, there are some clunkers on here.) Honestly, I wouldn't have gone in for a project like 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die back then. I couldn't suffer it. What does it say about me now that I can? Expanded my appreciation of music or gone soft?

Kinda of cool to see the connective tissue between hair metal and more modern metal represented by the offspring here.

I really wasn't enjoying this at all, and was ready to give it my first 1 star rating. Then two pretty good songs which I remember from indie discos but didn't realise we're The Offspring came along to save the record: self esteem and the best song, Come out and Play.

Got through half, really wanted to like it. I can see how a lot of stuff I like is influenced by stuff like this but it's just a smidge too much. Need to find that perfect balance between loud and annoying and singer/songwriter i guess

I know what to expect here, speed guitars and layered male voices. It’s derivative. This would not be a thing without Nirvana. Very simple but it’s energetic teenage music. Very American. Lots of shouting & woahs & yeahs. ‘Come Out & Play’ & ‘Self Esteem’ work though, great sing a long singles. ‘Pop punk’ is a great description. After a while this relentless samey trebley energy stresses and grates my middle aged bones though, like music for kids who have eaten loads of sugary food and energy drinks, makes me feel a bit sick.

The melodies were half decent. I'd forgotten about Come Out and Play. It's a fun tune that passed a pleasant three minutes or so. But there wasn't anything life changing about this album. An unplugged album with a little more soul might have been more appealing to me. The sound grated after a while. Pop punk shouldn't exist. The only authority is yourself, etc.

Meh not impressed

Same sounding. Punk energy with better playing and uninteresting songs. Maybe one sorta catchy one.

There's the two hits, and then there is a lot of songs with the same tempo. I enjoyed it at first but then the repetitive tempo bored me. I had a lot of friends in the 80s into skate/pop punk, and it as a genre never gelled with me.

Best Song: What Happened to You? I like the ska-style rhythm. It feels like it channels the band's rambunctious energy into a more productive direction. Worst Song: Bad Habit. Odd choice to focus so heavily on the voice of a guy who can't sing. Also, the whole lyrical schtick of being a badass Overall: It feels as though I've heard all the big songs on this album hundreds of times on the radio, and still I struggle to see the broad appeal. Is it because it has a certain everyman quality? Listening to this, you can imagine that, with minimal effort, you could probably make some kind of generic music that would be on par with what's available here. So you sing along and, as your caterwauling mixes with the sounds from the radio, you are able to vicariously live your rock star life.

I didnt like it on the radio back in the day. The other tracks are better but it is just passable.

I almost bought this album so many times, but the singles off this thing were unavoidable in the mid-late 90s. I just wasn't sure I was alternative to this degree. I liked Nirvana and Green Day, but these guys were something else - like fake punk instead of real? Anyway, songs were catchy, but there was something artificial about them to me. Just doesn't grab me even though it was supposed to!

Didn't age well for me.

Very fast rock - like Motorhead with a different vocalist. They got through a lot of drummers and I'm not surprised.

I never got on with Offspring although I should have been target demo. I remember being aggrieved that they called themselves punk when they sounded nothing like the Sex Pistols. Besides this, I still don't really enjoy the sound. Next.

When you're 8 and this record hits, you think it's such a dangerous album. In hindsight, and 30+ years later, you realize it's mostly hot air. Still, you wonder what could have been, had they not started playing cringey MTV quasi-raprock.

Shouty shouty repetitive bobbins! I sound like an old got writing this, but I felt the same when it was released.

I remember seeing this album - you didn't have to go far to find someone who owned it. Multiple tracks from this album are familiar because of regular radio play, and one or two tracks feel like a vortex straight back to the 90s. The album didn't appeal to me back then, and listening to the full album didn't make me like the music more than I liked it back then. The vocals are easily recognizable, and a weight too heavy to carry for me to like this album.

Har ibland tänkt på The Offspring som ett band som har guilty pleasure-potential. Har endast hört de kändaste låtarna, och dom kan verkligen slå an en rocknerv i mig, men de känns samtidigt otroligt töntiga. Efter att ha lyssnat igenom detta albumet har bandets status hos mig inte stigit nämnvärt. När The Offspring är bra så är de verk-li-gen bra, men oftast blir det lite för platt och 90-talsamerikanskt. Amerikansk punk har sällan tillräcklig råhet och melodisk känsla, i mitt tycke. Ibland har sångaren Dexter Holland lite för gnällig röst, som i inledningen på Bad Habit. Hatar också hans töntiga jävla spaghettihår. Och han har tydligen släppt en egen hot sauce. Usch. Self Esteem räknas såklart med i de riktigt bra Offspring-låtarna. Det riffet skojar man INTE bort. Bästa låt: Self Esteem.

Turns out the length of a song is about all I can tolerate. Listened in short bursts throughout the day. A whole album is just too much at once. Love the songs I know, though!

The first time I heard this band I had a visceral dislike of the shouted lyrics and mashed together noise. Very melody and very little complexity. I still can’t stand this.

Offspring- why is this on the list? I remember the album from when I was a kid and it has like 4 populars songs but some things are better to forget. This was so terrible I don’t get how this was so popular. I know punk is supposed to be obnoxious but this dudes voice is the most annoying thing. I just don’t get why this is on here and I hope we don’t get their other one from the late 90’s with the kid on the swing with the bug

I can't stand the voice, I can't stand the drums, pretty much every song sounds the same, and it is toooooo long. I just have zero interest in this sort of music. The best thing about this album is that it's actually 8ish minutes shorter than I initially thought because of a big gap after the last track!

Crazy taxi. That's what comes to mind with the offspring. They were on the periphery of my teenage years: often in soundtracks to video games I played to death... ---- Post Ah man. I should like this. I was a 00s skater kid and now a grown mosher. Buuut it's so one note and insincere. It's pop punk without the appeal. I can imagine it being important as an angry teen, but I am old and cynical. They certainly nailed their sound early on that's for sure - the vocals are recognisably distinctive. For me it sounds like Ozzy sped up with a throat infection. Why does it sound like the drums were recorded through a door? At least the guitar/bass is competent. I don't think this is essential.

I really tried to be even handed. Some stuff about this band has always annoyed me though and I can't seem to get past it. His voice and delivery style, the busy power chord stuff, the thin drums. Wish I could chill about those things and see what many others do.

Wow! I’m rating two of their LPs in a row… still not a fan. Maybe even less of a fan than I was yesterday.

I don't have much to say about this; I didn't listen with particular special attention, because this is not a genre I prefer to listen to very much. Suffice to say this was easier to listen to than the previous metal album, and there was some catharsis about it, and some occasional interesting melodies and rhythms. My favorite song might've been the last one because I kind of liked the lyrics.

3/2 = 1 . . . 3 parts annoying to 2 parts boring = 1 star.

My mate used to put on punk gigs at our local 200-capacity venue. Most of the bands in the scene consisted of decent people. The Offspring certainly weren't. They were a bunch of arseholes, by all accounts. Opportunistic moneygrabbers who latched on to the scene and copied the "popular punk formula" for hits and fame. Very unpopular with anyone unfortunate enough to have dealt with them. Zero stars for being twats.

come out and play is good and some parts of songs here and there i could appreciate. the ending hidden track made with the riff from come out was also fun. if i were a skater boy i would love this album. alas, i am no skater boy.

A couple tracks were alright. Most of it feels like an angry 12 year old child of divorce got the Tom Hanks’s “Big” experience. And also, hidden tracks suck! Songs that I didn’t dislike: keep em separated, self esteem (this has bad romance intro).

I can not in good conscience offer this a rating due to it being unutterably appalling, however I fear the system will require me to award it one star, thus putting the album on a par with the dreadful efforts by AC/DC and Alanis, when unfeasibly it is actually quite a lot worse. What a giant slog it was to get through this album. I love Gotta Get Away, but I fucking hate Self Esteem and Keep Em Separated. They’re in my list of most hated songs of all time. This album sums up the sound of every dumbass thirteen year old boy thinking they’re the shit, when in reality, they ain’t shit. What bothers me about this record is how whiny and awful the lead singers voice is, how annoying the hooks are, and how pre/early teen immature this music is. Granted, there is an audience for that, but I'm not it. Big pass here, except for Gotta Get Away.

WoooooooooooooAhhh woooooooooaaaaaaaaaooooohhhhh. I think self esteem is kind of the platonic ideal of what these guys do. Really dumb lyrics I don’t mind the guitar stuff the vocals are really annoying. Always double tracked and singing at the absolute edge of vocal range always. Ska song was like if Sublime sucked even more.

Considering that Americans pretty much invented the genre, 90s skate / pop punk genre was a real low point in punk's history. I wasn't a fan at the time and I think The Offspring were significantly worse than Green Day or NOFX. On listening to Smash for the first time in 30 years, it was significantly worse than I remember. I didn't think it would be a one, but it is utter garbage.

Their third album. Punk Rock. Parody Punk. Utter shit ! Vocally annoying, lyrically pathetic and musically flat. Forty six minutes was forty five minutes too long. No stand out track. I've listened, no need to come back again.

If you want to listen to this, go for it. If you want to absorb it, go for it. If you need it, I feel sorry for you. I always hear 'punk rock,' but this is anything but 'punk rock.' It's some kind of American slapstick. 'Offspring': Yes, I've heard the band name somewhere, but I can't remember any of the songs. Nothing on 'Smash' sounds familiar to me, and I definitely won't listen to it again.

From the Offspring’s Spotify entry: “They are widely considered to be the iconic innovators of the southern California punk rock sound.“ It even says at the bottom “Posted by The Offspring”. Talk about vainglorious! There is plenty more I could say about that quote not to mention all the other California punk rock bands that are so much better than the Offspring… I’ll just say this, 1 star only because I can’t give this one 0 stars.

I really hate this album. This is no stars rounded up to 1 for me. I really hate Dexter’s voice and his cadence for every song on this album. It’s not ok to have just call your guitarist, “Noodles.” It’s a very overrated album and the hit single was way overplayed. Yes, there’s a lot of personal bias here. But remember Rancid’s “Let’s Go” album came out the same year and it’s far superior album. Do yourself a favor and go listen to it instead of the Offspring.

This one might’ve hit hard with teens in the ’90s punk scene, but for me, the Offspring’s sound, especially the vocals, just feels grating and chaotic in a way that doesn’t click with me.

I can’t explain the exact reason - maybe it’s the amateur lyrics, more likely the grating vocals, or even more likely that 90s alt radio played most of the songs on this album to death - but I HATE this album and this band more than most things in my life. There is no song more annoying than Come Out and Play, Self Esteem and Get Away - beat only by the terribly abused sample in Get a Job (diff album). I wanted to try today - to be open minded and give it space. Nope. I gave each song 20 seconds. This album and band sucked in 1994. They both really suck now. 1/5

LMAO, seriously. firstly, it only let me play TWO songs, which were a completely shit. it felt like a joke jesus christ. at least i had fun but bc of how shit it was. the only “plus” is that one was in spanish so i could understand it better, however that was bad at the same time bc what the hell with the lyrics HAHAHA. anyway, i did not like neither of the two songs but i laughed!

I heard this album upon its release back in my record store days. My reaction back then was, "Wow - this is absolute crap!" Listened to bits of it again, just to see if my opinion would change, and no. How an album of such generic reductive punk-but-not-too-punk, like this one gets on a list like this I don't understand. All of the bands that Offspring are ripping off deserve to be listed as influential, but this band doesn't have an original idea anywhere to be found. Utter dreck.

I didn’t like this album up until Self Esteem, then I stopped liking it again. 3.5/10 woulda been better if Self Esteem and What Happened to You? weren’t the only decent songs and the last song has like 5 minutes of silence💔

Dit is een volwassen man die gepassioneerd als een tiener zingt en voor tieners/pubers schrijft. Welke volwassen man is nog steeds geobsedeerd met edgy woorden/high school. Perhaps, but I do recall literally everyone at the time being more interesting and less annoying that these turds.

I really grew up liking the song Come Out and Play. Self Esteem never did it for me. The rest of this album is not good. Thin instrumentals with very similar songs throughout. The punk aesthetic is not appealing, the post-grunge aspects are grating, and the ska is obnoxious. Not one I'd ever listen to again. 1.4/5 -> 1/5

I've always had a pretty bad relationship with Dexters vocals, and there's only a single song on this album that was actually "good" (Self-esteem).. But the God damn vocals killed it for me - Even though I got Tony Hawks Pro Skater vibes...

Wow this was awful. There's that one popular tune which is OK. And the intro base line on the 2nd track was cool. Otherwise hard pass.

Horrible album. The only thing that isn’t forgettable about it is the singers voice which is incredibly annoying. As if it wasn’t bad enough they chucked a ska number in there. Yuck.

I'm well over 1,001 albums so I'm just going to hate this one on spec. It's not like I don't already know the broad strokes. The so-called hits. Everything was going just fine in the '90's music wise, and then these fuckers started bellowing about self esteem and keeping shit separated. No thank you. Fittingly enough, this album was released about a week before Kurt Cobain killed himself. This album probably made him pull the trigger.

This is worse than I remember.

One of the worst albums I've ever heard. This kind of pop punk is really not my thing & just sounds incredibly dated now. Some of the riffs are cool but the vocals are just so hoarse and uninteresting. Best Song: Come Out And Play Worst Song: What Happened To You?

This is Tony Hawk Music, which I would like when playing the game but wouldn’t listen outside playing. The only redeeming quality is the fact that I could see it used in the sync world easily. The thing for me is the album cover is so trash that I knew what to expect before listening. The melodies are so forgettable and pretty much all the same in every song. To the credit of the vocalist, I’m not sure what else you could sing over these chord progressions.

Not my cup of tea at all this side of American Punk, does nothing for me.

God this dude's voice bothers me to no end. So they layer it to make it even more unpalatable. This album... I was teetering between a 1 and a 2-star rating, and while a 1-star feels reactionary and maybe even petty, I didn't enjoy a minute of it. And I HATE the song "Self-Esteem." It's the proverbial nails on a chalkboard. Hasn't been a great week for me with these latest selections — I think my personal hell might be The Offspring opening for Kid Rock opening for The Offspring opening for Kid Rock....

This just goes to prove how different people are. Geographical, cultural and age differences mean this is just generic and unoriginal to me. The music is ok- I can hear other bands in there but it's just me.

I think our first 1 is on the way…… I don’t take this lightly: I don’t like the offspring. This is the first album I truly dislike, if this cd was in a car I’d rather listen to the Dua Lipa on the radio or whatever…. Sorry boys :( Like there are some fine songs whatever but we desperately need casablancas to save us from this mid/greenday music 😭

The best part about this album was the nearly 10 minutes of silence between the title track and the hidden track at the end of the album. The second best thing about this album was the playlist Spotify conjured up following this album by playing actual good bands. The worst thing about this album was Dexter Holland's grating and irritating bro voice. I like punk. I did not like this album.

The Offspring were in the right place at the right time and they rode the third wave of punk right to the top of the charts with the ubiquitous Come Out and Play and Self Esteem (which would be followed a few years later by two very annoying songs that haven’t aged well: Pretty Fly for a White Guy and Why Don’t You Get a Job). They wrote stupid catchy songs about simple concepts and people ate it up, but their recycled version of punk rock ethos is insincere and intolerable. They are basically the Weird Al Yankovic of punk and outside of the two decent singles, this album is a complete dud.

Sounds like Motörhead for some reason but without the tightness. The sound of "Smash" is loose, loud, and annoying. Like an electric drill. It's an interesting take on punk/grunge, but the overall sound made me want to... you know, SMASH something? It does feel harsh giving it a 1, but I really hated this album enough to do it. The annoying chugging-train sound of punk plus the grating grunge voice? I hated it, I'm sorry.

Sounds and riffs are good at times. But it doesn't engage me. I am probably not the demographic they were thinking of. To my ears it feels vacuous and staged emotion. it has no relation to punk for me. Cover art 2/5 corny

Liked a decent amount of the songs a lot. A couple were kinda bad like 'Killboy Powerhead'. Audio quality is definitely dated. Would've appreciated a but more variety in the album, but it was good for what it was.
