I've heard worse. Plus, nostalgia points...
Bra album, förvånad att jag faktiskt gillade det mesta Bästa låtar: It’ll be a long time, What happened to you?
I really wanted to like this :(
the best songs are the hits. the others aren’t memorable
meehhh
Nope
Really takes me back to playing Crazy Taxi and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater on the Dreamcast. Should have waited for the PS2 to come out!! I had an Offspring hoodie despite only having heard their music on those games and not knowing it was them! Quite boring music really, 2 stars coming straight from nostalgia!
Honking
bad

I don't care for The Offspring's sound, but his was listenable, mostly, and I respect it. I understand why this was one of the hardcore punk groups that had radio play. 2
-certified head banger -best song: ‘self esteem’ -repetitive -would not revisit
- come out and play - self esteem
Sounded a lot like Green Day
Ok but like most punk I've listened to on this list it does suffer from a lack of variety in the sound. High 2.
The Offspring feels nostalgic and has some decent to good songs, but they don't really feel like an "album" group. Instead, they tend to have some really good singles. I will say, I like their ska influence though. Outside of the top tracks, the singers voice is grating and the guitar licks feel repetitive. Finally, what is up with the final song being 10 minutes but silent for half of it. Were they trolling? Best Songs: Self Esteem, What Happened to You? Worst Songs: Genocide, So Alone, Smash
A ono volio bi da mi se više sviđa self esteežmmi je i dalje super
Not my thing but I didn't hate it.
grunge
Just not a fan at all.
Time to Relax: wow, a skit. Nitro (Youth Energy): a decent skate punk song Bad Habit: Orange County punk band writes a song about driving Gotta Get Away: a bad grunge rip-off (About A Girl, anyone?) Genocide: another skate punk song. It's OK but at this point in the album the overly compressed guitar overdubs give me ear fatigue. Something to Believe In: Here's where I admit that I don't really like The Offspring and the vocal effect employed on every recording they ever did is a major part of why I never listen to their records. It overpowers everything like alfalfa sprouts on an otherwise delicious sandwich. Come Out and Play: novelty song Self Esteem: the other grunge song It'll Be a Long Time: the other skate punk Pennywise song Killboy Powerhead: the cover What Happened to You?: the ska punk number? ROFL So Alone: filler song Not the One: the angsty song trying to be Bad Religion Smash: I LOL'd at the half-time breakdown at the end Nice little skit and hidden track at the end because it was the nineties.

I’ve never been a big fan of The Offspring, this changed nothing. The singles are the only unique songs
All the cool kids at school liked the offspring so I never listened to them out of principle I knew self esteem of course Little did I know how much every other song sounded like self esteem as well There’s only so much whiny punk I can stand
Very simplistic Drums are very boring Lyrics have not aged well (e.g. saying “tranny” a bunch while trying to be supportive)
Interesting narration every once in a while to move the album along, but this was not enough to save what was mostly a collection of irritating songs. It wasn’t the worst music I’ve ever heard, but I don’t plan on revisiting this one.
I like the vocals with Offspring. This is a high energy romp but it has that fast but superficial sound of American nu-metal. It's too lame call itself 'Genocide'. Not an unpleasant listen and probably quite fun - but... but... a bit too basic, and none of the authentic aggression of something like punk rock. 'Something to Believe In' is catchy. 'Come Out and Play' is more what I'd expected from Offspring... more like 'Pretty Fly' with its humour and playfulness.
I listened to this a lot as a teenager, I probably would have given it a 3 if I still was a teenager. However it's lost it's once mildly rebellious effect on me. A few very catchy songs bit runs out of steam 2/3rds of the way through.
Every song sounded the same to be idk can appreciate someone’s dad would like this
Each song sounded like every other offspring song I’ve ever heard. Good energy for a Monday morning though
I was pretty unimpressed! Came in with high expectations. It’s a lot of songs that sound like a more aggro, guitar-heavy version of styles that everyone was into at the time. The surf rock through-line piqued my interest! Gotta say I enjoyed the 1 minute bonus track, where they play actual surf rock and give the game away, more than a lot of the album though. Doesn’t feel like I’m gonna return to this, it just wasn’t a special enough listen if I’m honest! 2/5
I don't appreciate "god damn mf " as lyrics.
I just have no interest in this band unfortunately
Only gets a second star because there are like one or two ok songs on this but this is like buttrock for middle schoolers lol
Come out and play is the best song on this album. I really liked this band in high school, but on listening again, the songs are similar across this album. Wouldn't listen to this entire album again.
Punk is punk. It's fine.
This style isn't to my tastes, but objectively it is a fun and original album of decent quality
I hated Come Out and Play when it came out and hate it just as much today. Could it be the dude's annoying voice or that is was way overplayed when it came out? Probably a combination of both with an emphasis on the voice. Self Esteem is OK tune, but it's just difficult for me to get over that voice. Especially for an entire album. After Self Esteem, my favorite part was that 5 minute silence at the end. Too much repetitive sound and a voice only a mother could love = 2 for me. 2
Okay so confession time. I've never listened to The Offspring outside of the monster hits. I've always meant to but Dexter's voice reminds me too much of Weird Al, so every time I tried I couldn't shake it and quit. Naturally of course I love Self-Esteem. It's an important part of who I am and is basically a core part of my DNA. So I tried to channel that when listening to this. As I worked my way through it I realized that I just didn't care for it. Everything was there. All of the pieces just how I like them. On paper I should love this but I just didn't. Every song was too similar I can't stand Dexter's voice Weird Al or no. Sucks because I want to like this fucking band. 2.
Not in my personal 1,001. Jay walked in the door as I was cranking this last night and as our resident historian told me that Offspring was the first "incelcore" band. 🤣🤣🤣 Didn't know that genre existed but I believe him!
I thought that I had never heard a song by The Offspring. I had consciously tried never to, because I was under the impression that they were the bastard sons of Slipknot. Given the choice, I choose for my ears to NOT bleed. In Venn diagrams of music, fans, slipknot, and the offspring seemed to cross each other’s circles. It turns out, however, that I had heard a couple of these songs before, but had not been aware of it. They are more like distant cousins of Green Day or blink-182. They’re fine and maybe even slightly fun, but I’m not going to seek them out any time soon.
i don't know why this is on this list. it's all right, but it's nothing special. two good songs does not a must-listen-before-you-die album make.
Kept wondering if I were a 17 year old boy in the 90s would I like this? But I’m not and I didn’t.
The first half of this was fun MTV pop punk and a 3/5... the second half was absolutely terrible zany ska-punk and a solid 1/5 so imma give it a 2
meh, a little too hard/angry for my tastes.
I like the punk style and energy, listening to it over breakfast gave me plenty of pep for vigorously brushing my teeth. All the songs sound the same. About 140bpm, thrashy guitars, that croaky/whiny voice, occasional bass solo etc. etc. Couldnt they try one slower or acoustic number? Not something I personally would consider as one of the greatest albums of all time, but certainly fun to listen to.
so yell-y no thank you
So is this 90s PUNK ROCK, or is this EMO? I dunno what to classify it as but it sounds like they are trying to be PUNKS. I have never intentionally listened to this band before. Do I like it? In my criticism of anything past 1979 REALLY being punk rock, I don't think this qualifies as meeting all the required hallmarks. I don't know what these guys dress like either. Bleh, I'll give 2 stars for effort.
really not my thing

Bit of thrash.
Something about the vocal production in Offspring tracks has always bugged me. It's a distinct style of mixing that never goes away, and I can't move past it. It almost sounds like all vocals are doubled all the time, but they're...not? That said, this album does have a few bangers that are always a good time when you hear them at a bar. Another reviewer on here said something along the lines of, "the Offspring are like the Taco Bell of punk." And holy nasty shits, that is spot on. You know it's not authentic, you know it's not very satisfying, but sometimes it's kind of tasty. But man, it was a stretch for me to get all the way through this one. The last track spanning over 10 minutes was a breaking point. Not in a rush to listen to this again anytime soon.
I’m not completely immune to The Offspring’s charms, but this mostly just sounds like a 13-year-old Mountain Dew addict’s ideal skate soundtrack.
Loved the energy, but not many standouts.
*Guy who’s only ever listened to the ‘Skate 3 Soundtrack’ listening to any other album*: “getting some serious ‘Skate 3 Soundtrack’ vibes from this album” It’s ok. Didn’t enjoy listening to it, but I didn’t hate it. American pop punk is probably the worst genre in the world, so this is high praise. 2/5
Okay, before listening to this I knew some of their hits and hated every single one of them. However, the first few songs of the album weren't that bad - the instrumentation is good, and the consistency of it makes you kind of desensitised to the obnoxious screaming. But then a couple of their famous songs played back to back and made me realise that nevermind, I do still hate them. Stand-out: Genocide
Thought this was just OK, and outside of the two songs I was familiar with, the rest sounded a lot alike. The vocals got real old quickly.
The intro to this album is hilarious considering that this music is not at all soothing. Offspring is not my favorite band, nor is this my favorite genre of music. It has its place, but overall not my preference.
Next....
2 stars
This is respectable old school punk fused with modern alternative rock trends and production to make something radio friendly yet full of edge. However, I will rate it low from hearing it a lot as a kid. C
don't like this group
Like the poppy hits. Not nuts about the rest of it.
Wer damals das Radio eingeschaltet hat, kam am Self Esteem nicht vorbei. Klingt, als könne man den Song gut für eine Jeans-Werbung einsetzen. Aber auch wenn das mal der Knaller war. Bei mir knallt nichts.
I thought I had no idea who The Offspring were. The lead singer’s voice seemed familiar right away, and then I recognized the song “Gotta Get Away.” I am also familiar with “Come Out and Play” and “Self Esteem,” which were played to death on the radio in the ‘90’s and beyond. I guess I was more into popular music at the time than I realized. While I still kind of like these songs a bit, I can’t say this is my style of music. The rest of the album is too hard punk and dystopian for me.
Mundane.
Not really my kind of music. A bit too heavy. But that being said, I love Come Out and Play. The music is fun and makes me want to get up and dance. Although when you listen to the words, it's not fun at all.
I probably would have loved this at 15 years old, but at 30 pop punk isn't really my thing anymore.
13 in een dozijn schreeuwerige gitaar rockmuziek. Self Esteem is nog net de moeite waard.
Nicht gehört, kenne es aber.. Erinnert mich zu sehr an Paddy Pohl und nicht meine Musik.
Low marks for the grossly inappropriate song
nah, knew them as a novelty with pretty fly for a white guy, guess this is a more serious album but strikes me as middle class suburban punk, didn't like. 1.7
monologues 🤮 Too polished
Not as good as i remembered it. Highlight is the brilliant ‘Self Esteem’. ‘Gotta Get Away’ is ok too. But the overall album just not strong enough.
Punk-influenced definitely, but way too over-produced for my taste.
Don't care much for The Offspring.
Just an all-time grating voice. This would actually be pretty decent if it weren't for that. Self Esteem is about the only song where his voice is tolerable, but I couldn't get through this album.
I’m being generous, esp. since one of the guitarists screws up the second lick on “Gotta Get Away”
Found this more irritating to have playing than enjoyable, but probs actually quite good musicians so not a 1
Not bad but not for me
First half of the album sounds too sameish. Just hard rock. Not rating this one too highly, the songs all sound too similar. Maybe two good songs on the album.
Something yelly, something rude, I can tell I did like it when it sounded new. But it doesn’t anymore…
Like "Come out and Play" and "Self Esteem" back in the day, and those still hold up as singles, but listening to the whole album the Offspring sound got old.
While I respect the punk scene and the music that came from it, this is personally not for me.
Boring
aggressive
Listenable for Come Out and Play, and Self Esteem. The rest is pretty generic nineties pop punk. Come Out and Play gets most of its charm from surf rock - Pulp Fiction? Two stars for the energy and production and humor and those tracks. Otherwise forgettable and obnoxiously intentionally juvenile and repetitive and lyrically offputting.
Not really my thing. I made it like 4 songs through. The first little intro was kinda funny
Skate punk album for teenagers, which hasn't aged well in the past 30 years. It's not completely unlistenable but it deserves nothing more than a 2.
it was ok, wouldn't seek it out again
ekki elst vel. fannst þetta fínt ungum enda með vanþróaðan framheila
This was pretty boring, which makes complete sense given my track record with punk music. Offspring is fine, but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to them. My favourite song was Self Esteem.
Like kje sånn punk
- Never listened to the Offspring before but thought it'd be something I'd like - Disappointed, nothing interesting really stuck out and doesn't seem like it fits on the list
I may finf something about this album which I like, but it’s unlikely that I will ever come back.
Never had a skateboarder phase = meh
Never been a fan of these guys, but Come Out and Play is a nice nostalgic ditty.
Struggling to find much merit in this, it's pretty inane. It's like they couldn't be bothered to find something worth shouting about so they just shouted anyway.
I liked the spoken intermissions! Plus that short hidden track at the end. Other than that, I didn't like it that much... + Time To Relax + Come Out And Play + Self Esteem
It's fun and I can see why my teen self got around them, but ultimately I came away from this listen thinking this was pretty lame. Fav track: Self Esteem 2.5
All for some Tony Hawks Pro Skater core but this was pretty samey and a bit lame and just never fully committed to the scratchy ratbaggery or more catchy melodic punk rock. Fave track: It'll Be a Long Time
Come out and Play and Self Esteem were their big radio hits. That's about all I can take of this style of music.
It's a 2 from me but a 5 from sixteen-year-old me. Self Esteem & Come Out And Play are fun
Initial impression after the first few tracks... boring. Just not that much going on. Production has too much emphasis on midrange, they seem to be thinking they are playing super fast super thrash which is true but conversely this just isn't all that interesting. Vocals are lame, just a monotone sing shout. There are two songs I recognize and they are a bit more tuneful and better, but honestly, without them this album would be pretty terrible. I was listening to Dead Kennedys right before this and boy, what a contrast, so much better songwriting, so much more emotion, so much more energy! I was sorely tempted to give it one star, but there are two decent songs, if I could I'd do 3/10 so I'll give them two stars and save the one star for something truly awful, not just boring.
The songs I like from the offspring, I like because they came to me when I was 13. Most of these songs didn't not and I'm not 13 anymore.
2 stars, just a bit to metal for me!
Pressed skip a number of times on this. That cookie cutter punk drums and constipated Kurt Cobain vocals just aren't right.
Too rowdy for me
-okay that intro song is HILARIOUS -this just seems like very average punk rock -like teen garage band punk rock -and some bands like that are really really good! -but i don’t super think this band is -the songs weren’t bad to listen to -definitely enjoy a lot of the rock on this list WAYYYYY more
Not for me
Not that interesting, quite thrashy and grungy without any memorable songs. Not one I will bother with again
One now knows what to listen to next time he gets a tattoo or goes to the skate park. This is just as obnoxious and sophomoric as one remembers. It could scarcely be samier, cut to cut, save maybe for the ska pastiche (kids, maybe try listening to something more like the real thing) but even that has the same banks of fuzzy-crunching guitars (all of which sound synthetic). Plus it’s a convincing exhibit in the increasingly one-sided case that accuses the ‘90s of being the worst musical decade ever. Only needs knowing by adolescent boys and it would be better if they too skipped it. It really requires a warning label for that cohort, a warning that should specify how silly it will all sound in a few years, when presumably one will cultivate some taste, develop some perspective, broaden one’s horizons, etc.
1.) Time To Relax: 5/10 Decent intro. Prefer the intro to Shellac’s Prayer to God 2.) Nitro (Youth Energy): 6.1/10 Alright sounding punk song. Not much to say really 3.) Bad Habit: 7.5/10 Really loved the intro ngl. Pretty cool lyrics and nice melody 4.) Gotta Get Away: 5.9/10 Decent punkish song I guess 5.) Genocide: 7.6/10 Immediately enjoyed the faster pace. Cool lyrics and nice hook. Dog eat dog. 6.) Something To Believe In: 6.6/10 Nice fast pace again. Didn’t enjoy as much as Genocide though 7.) Come Out and Play: 6.5/10 Everyone knows this song for literally the first part. Nice lil surf riff (that’s my favorite part ngl) 8.) Self Esteem: 5/10 The other song everyone knows. My band was gonna play this but it got cut. Don’t like it as much as Come Out and Play. Sounds tired. 9.) It’ll Be A Long Time: 6.9/10 This is a jumpstart from Self Esteem and a much needed one at that. The faster pace actually makes me enjoy it way more than Self Esteem. More punky. Kind of a tired trite version of punk that’s been done to death but punky nonetheless. 10.) Killboy Powerhead: 6.3/10 Like the title. Sounds like a Big Black title. The punkish sound they’re going for is kinda wearing off on me. Album seems fairly one note to me ngl. 11.) What Happened to You?: 6.8/10 Nice change of sound. Very ska influenced since Sublime’s Ten Oz. To Freedom had been out for two years by this point. Vocals sound too polished across this whole album ngl. Double tracked too well I guess. Seems unnatural. 12.) So Alone: 6.2/10 Punk song to its very core (just over a minute long) 13.) Not The One: 5.6/10 Nice lyrics. Whole album’s kinda wearing at me by this point 14.) Smash: 5.8/10 Oooh hidden track. Not as good as Endless, Nameless though (although nothing can be). Cool lil surfy jam though (I recognize the song yet cannot for the life of me figure out the name) Final rating: Strong 4/Light 5 Just kinda felt like the mainstream perception of punk in the worst way possible. Did have some bangers though.
Dexter’s voice is so unique. Sounds pretty unskilled but kind of works sometimes. Other times horribly annoying. Teeters between the two for me.
I like their other stuff, this was a little bit of a headache though, maybe would've given it a 3/5 on a good day and a 4/5 on a hot summer day playing horseshoes with my second cousins.
I fucking hate this band.
I never understood what the 1990s US punk revival was about since the bands of that era didn't add anything to what came over a decade earlier. Offspring was able to get the formulae right for the large audience FM stations with songs like Self Esteem and Come Out and Play but this isn't really a compliment.
I think that if was born in 1980 I would have liked this. It’s not as bad as a lot of the late 20th century quasi punk/metal out there. The song-writer has a good knack for catchy sing-along choruses that don’t sound (too) trite.
This is a cut above Green Day, but this shouty adolescent pop/punk sound is not my jam.
To be fair this is not at all my favorite genre so it kind of started behind the 8 ball. Most of the songs are pretty one dimensional and sound quite similar to me, which I'm sure would change with more listens but not sure if it's worth that. The vocal delivery gets a little grating by the end as well. 4/10
Nirvana green day sound. Not for me
Not arsed by this
Nice heavy riffs, two of the singles are enjoyably melodic too. But Dexter Holland sounds like an overgrown brat, and his lyrics don’t show a worldview any wider than the average adolescent brat.
It’s the offspring 🤷♂️
Like the soundtrack to middle school. Such an iconic sound, but unfortunately just not into it that much. So many songs sound like the same song. Meh.
Would be a whole better experience if they didn't try to sing.... seriously.... please... stop doing that thing you think is singing.... oh geezus lord please make them stop. The music is fine... all very samey but you could listen to it.... and then oh jezus mary and the wee donkey... they open their mouths again... oh please stop... just play. Please, please, stop singing.... although.... once you remove the singing the tracks are basically all the same thrashing drum and axe.
Got bored quickly with this. To the point where it annoyed me a bit. It’s lost its shine which it had when I was younger. Always preferred Conspiracy of One anyway, and I think I’m one of the few people who enjoyed Splinter…
I didn't listen to this type of music when young, so it doesn't resonate with me from a nostalgia perspective, nor now from an enjoyment perspective. I see some merits, but not enough for a higher score.
same offspring, boring
That didn't do it for me.
Highlights: "Self Esteem," "Come Out and Play" It's easy to accept this as the inception of 90s pop punk along with Dookie. It's harder to accept this as the best selling indie album ever. It's not because it's a fresh outside voice though. It's easy to understand its success as a use of popular influences. "Self Esteem" is very Nirvana, but it was surprising at how much Metallica is in here -- not so much harmonically, but in the rhythms and timbres, from the guitars to the quasi-Hetfield vocals. They always have little dashes of Latin in their stuff, seemingly as a bad gag, so I was trying gauge their relationship to it here. I'd never read/understood the lyrics to "CoaP" before, so thinking about a bunch of seemingly white guys talk about putting away the colors and doing a exotica snake dancer riff for some reason seemed very Clintonite "superpredators" liberal for a punk album. Same goes for the penultimate song talking about how they weren't responsible for polluting the air when the album's first two songs are about souping up cars and road rage. Much like the jarring MIDI-like mixing of backup vocals on "Bad Habit," it's so bad it's funny. Mainstream punk is a nice metonym for the feckless liberalism of this decade, and this album is a nice metonym for mainstream punk.
Needs more trumpets
Not my style!!
Disco recontra famoso y con canciones divertidas, me gustó especialmente "Come Out and Play" y "What Happened to You?".
Very much of it's time
Feels more rock than punk A bit tedious
un poco pesado y muy uniforme
i love punk and i love california but i don’t love this
So yeah the Nineties and Epitaph Records equals Bad Religion to me. I was into Bad Religion in particular and punk in general enough to buy other releases from Epitaph around this time, but I never got into OFFSPRING. The track Come Out and Play meant you couldn't really escape them at the time. It just wasn't for me then. A little too pop and a little too slick but this was a time (teenage years) when you'd cut a band from your listen list for even a sliver of deviation from your personal aesthetics and ideals. Saying OFFSPRING wasn't for me then just means they were one of many bands who had some serviceable songs and reasonable records that I just rejected outright. Listening again, the vocals are overstrained and mixed a little too high for my taste but at least I can acknowledge it's not a terrible record. (Let's not overstate the case for this being a good album though, there are some clunkers on here.) Honestly, I wouldn't have gone in for a project like 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die back then. I couldn't suffer it. What does it say about me now that I can? Expanded my appreciation of music or gone soft?
Kinda of cool to see the connective tissue between hair metal and more modern metal represented by the offspring here.
Leiðinlegt
nope
I really wasn't enjoying this at all, and was ready to give it my first 1 star rating. Then two pretty good songs which I remember from indie discos but didn't realise we're The Offspring came along to save the record: self esteem and the best song, Come out and Play.
not my style, I do remember their music from years back though
Got through half, really wanted to like it. I can see how a lot of stuff I like is influenced by stuff like this but it's just a smidge too much. Need to find that perfect balance between loud and annoying and singer/songwriter i guess
I know what to expect here, speed guitars and layered male voices. It’s derivative. This would not be a thing without Nirvana. Very simple but it’s energetic teenage music. Very American. Lots of shouting & woahs & yeahs. ‘Come Out & Play’ & ‘Self Esteem’ work though, great sing a long singles. ‘Pop punk’ is a great description. After a while this relentless samey trebley energy stresses and grates my middle aged bones though, like music for kids who have eaten loads of sugary food and energy drinks, makes me feel a bit sick.
Not a fan.
Little recognizable but not completely my thing
not my thing
Energetic raw and pop enough to be easily to digest. Super fun Intro and Outro.
Never cared for them lol
why is this in 1001 albums you need to hear to before you die??
The melodies were half decent. I'd forgotten about Come Out and Play. It's a fun tune that passed a pleasant three minutes or so. But there wasn't anything life changing about this album. An unplugged album with a little more soul might have been more appealing to me. The sound grated after a while. Pop punk shouldn't exist. The only authority is yourself, etc.
Meh not impressed
'Come Out and Play' and 'Self Esteem' stand out musically and lyrically. The majority of the rest of the album is fairly uninteresting thrashy skate punk. Great energy and commitment, but a bit samey. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Come Out and Play Date listened: 22/07/22
Not a huge fan of the offspring but my dad's band would play this. Reminds me of my childhood
PSA: This. Is. Not. Punk. It's Frat-Boy metal. It's also very bad. Cargo Shorts spring to mind.
Same sounding. Punk energy with better playing and uninteresting songs. Maybe one sorta catchy one.
There's the two hits, and then there is a lot of songs with the same tempo. I enjoyed it at first but then the repetitive tempo bored me. I had a lot of friends in the 80s into skate/pop punk, and it as a genre never gelled with me.
Best Song: What Happened to You? I like the ska-style rhythm. It feels like it channels the band's rambunctious energy into a more productive direction. Worst Song: Bad Habit. Odd choice to focus so heavily on the voice of a guy who can't sing. Also, the whole lyrical schtick of being a badass Overall: It feels as though I've heard all the big songs on this album hundreds of times on the radio, and still I struggle to see the broad appeal. Is it because it has a certain everyman quality? Listening to this, you can imagine that, with minimal effort, you could probably make some kind of generic music that would be on par with what's available here. So you sing along and, as your caterwauling mixes with the sounds from the radio, you are able to vicariously live your rock star life.
Listened to on 5/4/22 2.5/5 Favorite song: self esteem This album is: chaotic. The intro was hilarious and every song was overly aggressive and I don’t love being yelled at BUT self esteem was phenomenal and took it from a 2 to a 2.5
Not good
Not bad this band but I prefer something more quiet.
Argh.
Self Esteem offers much to identify with, yes, but the rest of the album? A collection of bland noise tracks, all uncannily similar to one another.
Vocals are painful to listen to.
Smash and drab
I didnt like it on the radio back in the day. The other tracks are better but it is just passable.
I almost bought this album so many times, but the singles off this thing were unavoidable in the mid-late 90s. I just wasn't sure I was alternative to this degree. I liked Nirvana and Green Day, but these guys were something else - like fake punk instead of real? Anyway, songs were catchy, but there was something artificial about them to me. Just doesn't grab me even though it was supposed to!
Not my cup of tea, but my favorite track was What Happened To You?
wtf, this should not be on this list
That voice is almost unlistenable for me. Very poppy simple melodies… should this album be in this list? Nope!
Not terribly memorable
Look, this is going to probably be an unfair review as this is not really my kind of music. I do however like the irony of the opening track saying to 'relax' and then the first song begins with drums and guitar. It’s almost Pink Floyd esq…
too angsty 4 me
Didn't age well for me.
Very fast rock - like Motorhead with a different vocalist. They got through a lot of drummers and I'm not surprised.
I never got on with Offspring although I should have been target demo. I remember being aggrieved that they called themselves punk when they sounded nothing like the Sex Pistols. Besides this, I still don't really enjoy the sound. Next.
When you're 8 and this record hits, you think it's such a dangerous album. In hindsight, and 30+ years later, you realize it's mostly hot air. Still, you wonder what could have been, had they not started playing cringey MTV quasi-raprock.
Shouty shouty repetitive bobbins! I sound like an old got writing this, but I felt the same when it was released.
I remember seeing this album - you didn't have to go far to find someone who owned it. Multiple tracks from this album are familiar because of regular radio play, and one or two tracks feel like a vortex straight back to the 90s. The album didn't appeal to me back then, and listening to the full album didn't make me like the music more than I liked it back then. The vocals are easily recognizable, and a weight too heavy to carry for me to like this album.
It's a bit much. Probably a little bit too much. It's not like...awful, it's just not for me.
First listen. Some great songs
Ok but not for me ….
Top album for 14 year olds
Good for the nostalgia, not much else
It was ok, but nothing great
If I could give half stars, this would be a 2.5.
The talking in the intro makes me a little uncomfortable. Overall a little too intense and repetitive-sounding for my taste.
Very Offspring. lol Just not really into it.
Tiene 5 rolas chidas, 2 extraordinarias. Lo demás, bastante X, muy Epitaph del montón.
Fairly shit
I liked the 2 hits in the middle and the rest was ok for what it is. 2 Seems harsh but i'll never listen to it again
Disco importante para el desarrollo del pop punk en los 2000
"Come Out and Play" Released: March 10, 1994 "Self Esteem" Released: December 22, 1994 "Gotta Get Away" Released: February 2, 1995 "Bad Habit" Released: March 15, 1995 (radio only)
Esfuerzan demasiado la voz para mi gusto. Mejor harían yendo a gritar al campo.
A couple of songs are okay, but after a while it becomes boring and repetitive
they are so mad but i like what happened to you
1.5. There was a time in my life where I could tolerate Dexter's voice. That time has passed. The only upside is how perfectly it captures pissed off early 90s teenagers.
it wasn't amazing
Not my favorite
Not really my type of music, a bit too raw and aggressive sounding although can see its appeal if one likes the genre. 2/5
Turns out the length of a song is about all I can tolerate. Listened in short bursts throughout the day. A whole album is just too much at once. Love the songs I know, though!
A weird inflection point in punk/ska/alt rock that was kinda the worst of all worlds to me. Wanders into some neat hooks though Highlights: "Something to Believe In", "Come Out and Play", "Self Esteem"
Not a fan at all
Was pleasantly surprised and then I listened to the lyrics
Wow! I’m rating two of their LPs in a row… still not a fan. Maybe even less of a fan than I was yesterday.
I don't have much to say about this; I didn't listen with particular special attention, because this is not a genre I prefer to listen to very much. Suffice to say this was easier to listen to than the previous metal album, and there was some catharsis about it, and some occasional interesting melodies and rhythms. My favorite song might've been the last one because I kind of liked the lyrics.
3/2 = 1 . . . 3 parts annoying to 2 parts boring = 1 star.
this might be my least favorite kind of music whiny white boys favorite track - So Alone first time after 90+ albums that I couldn't be bothered to listen through
Expected absolute bangers, but it turns out of youve heard one Offspring song you've heard them all. Frankly disappointed.
Dreadful and juvenile. I didn’t like it then and like it less now.
This is garbage. Repetitive, basic bitch nu -punk bollocks. Having listened to it I now know that Pretty Fly For a White Guy is an almost note of note rehash of Come Out and Playz This is music for angry 14 year olds with notes from their doctor to get out of doing gym class. Teenage angst peddled by 30 year olds with bad haircuts 1.3
My mate used to put on punk gigs at our local 200-capacity venue. Most of the bands in the scene consisted of decent people. The Offspring certainly weren't. They were a bunch of arseholes, by all accounts. Opportunistic moneygrabbers who latched on to the scene and copied the "popular punk formula" for hits and fame. Very unpopular with anyone unfortunate enough to have dealt with them. Zero stars for being twats.
*No music. Loud banging noises. Most tracks sound alike
No me gustó, me costó escucharlo
I hate rage rock. Self esteem is kinda fun
Also a nope.
I was only familiar with one song which I had never liked. Still sticking by that opinion. Not a fan of the rest either. They all sound the same to me. I felt like I needed to get out a skateboard and be angry.
Not my fave
just hootin and hollerin... but i know the gotta keep em separated song at least?
Too loud and metal for me, gave me a headache. Good music though
i thought i’d like this cus i like some of their most popular songs but its soooo noiseslop i feel like i have to say somethingpositive 😭 so its cool that they have a really distinctive sound. like a lot of these songs i could hear you’re gonna go far kid in them (the style of vocals) even though they sound nothing alike. and if i had to like one song it’d be what happened to you
Best part were those last 6 minutes: pure silence and instrumentals that sounded nothing like The Offspring.
Not for me. Couldn't finish.
This record does one thing, and it does not do it very well.
stupid dumbshit goddamn motherfuckers... this album is DOGSHIT
i did not enjoy that 👍
come out and play is good and some parts of songs here and there i could appreciate. the ending hidden track made with the riff from come out was also fun. if i were a skater boy i would love this album. alas, i am no skater boy.
A couple tracks were alright. Most of it feels like an angry 12 year old child of divorce got the Tom Hanks’s “Big” experience. And also, hidden tracks suck! Songs that I didn’t dislike: keep em separated, self esteem (this has bad romance intro).
Hooray! Corporate “punk” rock. Fuck this bullshit. Why is this even on the list? The Black Album is way better than this crap.
I hated this when it first came out and that has not changed in any way with time
OVERALL: 2/10 Not my type of music Nitro (Youth Energy): Strong intro. Didn’t resonate with me though. Bad Habit: Nice rage song. Gotta Get Away: gym song. Genocide: not catching my attention, sonically. Something to Believe In: same as the last. Come Out and Play: ok. Self Esteem: Eh. It’ll Be a Long Time: Not my type of music. Killboy Powerhead: Wow, I do not like this type of music 😃. What Happened to You: Nice guitar. So Alone: Lowkey sounds like the last song. I like that it’s short. Gym song. Not the One: I think I like this one. Glad I saw it through. Smash: :/ yea nah
My first 0.5 of the year
I can not in good conscience offer this a rating due to it being unutterably appalling, however I fear the system will require me to award it one star, thus putting the album on a par with the dreadful efforts by AC/DC and Alanis, when unfeasibly it is actually quite a lot worse. Tom. Rubbish - Charlotte
No thanks.
No
There were so many better pop punk bands musically and the singer makes most of the songs unlistenable. I avoided listening to them on purpose for 30 years. Thanks.
Ew
1/5 no fav songs not for me at all!! not much to say just kind of skipped through all the songs because I didn't vibe with them.
GOING IN: Dreading it properly LISTENED WHILE: afternoon lounging FAMILIARITY: Know the artist, not the album SKIP RATE: Skipped half of it REPLAY VALUE: Once was plenty DISCOVERY CURVE: Never happened ALBUM ARC: Pretty even, consistent VERDICT: Fair enough BODY'S VERDICT: Statue mode My Rating: 1
Not good for me
Not my kind of music.
no lo escuché....
I really don’t have the energy today to ignore the vocals. Seems that they were influential, but not all influence is positive. I don’t want to hear this even a little bit again.
awful horrible noise
Ugh. Terrible
What a giant slog it was to get through this album. I love Gotta Get Away, but I fucking hate Self Esteem and Keep Em Separated. They’re in my list of most hated songs of all time. This album sums up the sound of every dumbass thirteen year old boy thinking they’re the shit, when in reality, they ain’t shit. What bothers me about this record is how whiny and awful the lead singers voice is, how annoying the hooks are, and how pre/early teen immature this music is. Granted, there is an audience for that, but I'm not it. Big pass here, except for Gotta Get Away.
Really poor album. I love punk rock but they ain't it
Like a few songs by them. Not this album though.
Herrie, soms lekker met "Come Out and Play" / "Self Esteem" niet voor tijdens het werk
I was correct to never listen to this album. Although I wonder if music snobs hated the Sex Pistols as much as I dislike this punk/ska/pop nonsense?
Man this really pissed me off
The stupidest album ever made. This band is even worse than I thought, and they’re already my least favorite band.
WoooooooooooooAhhh woooooooooaaaaaaaaaooooohhhhh. I think self esteem is kind of the platonic ideal of what these guys do. Really dumb lyrics I don’t mind the guitar stuff the vocals are really annoying. Always double tracked and singing at the absolute edge of vocal range always. Ska song was like if Sublime sucked even more.
Considering that Americans pretty much invented the genre, 90s skate / pop punk genre was a real low point in punk's history. I wasn't a fan at the time and I think The Offspring were significantly worse than Green Day or NOFX. On listening to Smash for the first time in 30 years, it was significantly worse than I remember. I didn't think it would be a one, but it is utter garbage.
Couldn’t finish
💩💦🚽
this was the height of me hating 90s popular music and it hasn't changed
Takes me back to the early 90s but I don't want to go. 👎
too boring, skipping
Crazy taxi, I think. Now that I listened to The Offspring a substantial amount I realize the lead singer approaches each song the same to a point of it being annoying. Very one-note. Not all bad, but boy that detracts from everything.
Ellers tak
doodie ass
Laut! Sonst nix!
I see the appeal just not mine self esteem was good just felt like a lot of mush
No grippyness to this album. 1/10
Their third album. Punk Rock. Parody Punk. Utter shit ! Vocally annoying, lyrically pathetic and musically flat. Forty six minutes was forty five minutes too long. No stand out track. I've listened, no need to come back again.
nao gostei mto
The whole album sounds like a tuning session. Then the vocals come in and the off button was reached. Not much more to say other than resist!
Not my thing Favourite song: Bad Habit
Should not be on any list.
If you want to listen to this, go for it. If you want to absorb it, go for it. If you need it, I feel sorry for you. I always hear 'punk rock,' but this is anything but 'punk rock.' It's some kind of American slapstick. 'Offspring': Yes, I've heard the band name somewhere, but I can't remember any of the songs. Nothing on 'Smash' sounds familiar to me, and I definitely won't listen to it again.
From the Offspring’s Spotify entry: “They are widely considered to be the iconic innovators of the southern California punk rock sound.“ It even says at the bottom “Posted by The Offspring”. Talk about vainglorious! There is plenty more I could say about that quote not to mention all the other California punk rock bands that are so much better than the Offspring… I’ll just say this, 1 star only because I can’t give this one 0 stars.
I really hate this album. This is no stars rounded up to 1 for me. I really hate Dexter’s voice and his cadence for every song on this album. It’s not ok to have just call your guitarist, “Noodles.” It’s a very overrated album and the hit single was way overplayed. Yes, there’s a lot of personal bias here. But remember Rancid’s “Let’s Go” album came out the same year and it’s far superior album. Do yourself a favor and go listen to it instead of the Offspring.
This one might’ve hit hard with teens in the ’90s punk scene, but for me, the Offspring’s sound, especially the vocals, just feels grating and chaotic in a way that doesn’t click with me.
I can’t explain the exact reason - maybe it’s the amateur lyrics, more likely the grating vocals, or even more likely that 90s alt radio played most of the songs on this album to death - but I HATE this album and this band more than most things in my life. There is no song more annoying than Come Out and Play, Self Esteem and Get Away - beat only by the terribly abused sample in Get a Job (diff album). I wanted to try today - to be open minded and give it space. Nope. I gave each song 20 seconds. This album and band sucked in 1994. They both really suck now. 1/5
uskomaton ylämäki tällä albumilla. maailman jyrkin ja pisin ehkäpä. aivan pohjamutien alla on ennen kuuntelukertaa mielipidä tälläisestä bändistä (olen kuullut yhden laulun aikaisemmin) ja mites teki.. nousiko edes ylös ja istahti takaisin. ei. meni suoraan makaamaan. tämä on paskaa. fucking disgusting band. woooooouauuaauaua uyeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa owoooooooooooouuuuuaa yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. tämä ei ole musikkkia. menkää kuunnelkaa räppiä niin saaatte jotain ideaa miltä kuulosta real music.. is rap music.. reael rap music.. wooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaeeeeeee aaaaaaaa ei paljoo sano laske SANAT LASKE MONTAKO SANAA TOSSA.. NOLLA. time to relax
🤮
No thanks
Typical punk, sounds like a monkey banging the drums incessantly and lots of shouting.
Shouty vocals. Repetitive guitar sound. Every track the same. Clearly of its time but hasn’t lasted.
There is no way I will listen to this ever.
Honestly not a bad album. I simply do not enjoy The Offspring. I like the one hit off this album, but this is not my sound.
wtf was this album? LMAO, seriously. firstly, it only let me play TWO songs, which were a completely shit. it felt like a joke jesus christ. at least i had fun but bc of how shit it was. the only “plus” is that one was in spanish so i could understand it better, however that was bad at the same time bc what the hell with the lyrics HAHAHA. anyway, i did not like neither of the two songs but i laughed!
sellouts
Never liked them, but I gave it a go. Garbage. It’s his voice but also everything else.
Awful
I heard this album upon its release back in my record store days. My reaction back then was, "Wow - this is absolute crap!" Listened to bits of it again, just to see if my opinion would change, and no. How an album of such generic reductive punk-but-not-too-punk, like this one gets on a list like this I don't understand. All of the bands that Offspring are ripping off deserve to be listed as influential, but this band doesn't have an original idea anywhere to be found. Utter dreck.
Felt like one loooong track.
I didn’t like this album up until Self Esteem, then I stopped liking it again. 3.5/10 woulda been better if Self Esteem and What Happened to You? weren’t the only decent songs and the last song has like 5 minutes of silence💔
2/10 cornball Jeremy music. Would rather be quartered than listen to this again.
