One of The Offspring's good albums. I don't listen to it often, but enjoy it when I do.

90's post punk here with a nod to the past (Damned/Ramones) Some good tunes here my favourites aare "Bad Habit" "Gotta Get Away" & "Self Esteem" Not in my collection, but not bad.

Boo

When you're 8 and this record hits, you think it's such a dangerous album. In hindsight, and 30+ years later, you realize it's mostly hot air. Still, you wonder what could have been, had they not started playing cringey MTV quasi-raprock.

A very nostalgic, typical Offspring sounding album. Very bouncy music, fun lyrics to sing along to. An enjoyable listen throughout, especially the singles.

I loved this album as a teenager. I still love it.

Shouty shouty repetitive bobbins! I sound like an old got writing this, but I felt the same when it was released.

If I'm the drummer of Offspring, I'm ripped, super toned and worn out af after each concert. High energy music that lacks some of the later production qualities. This was Offspring before they sold out. Also includes the ultimate college youth song, Self Esteem. This song alone propels it into 4-star territory.

Not familiar with this album. Self-Esteem sounds very familiar --lots of radio play. Movies too?

I remember seeing this album - you didn't have to go far to find someone who owned it. Multiple tracks from this album are familiar because of regular radio play, and one or two tracks feel like a vortex straight back to the 90s. The album didn't appeal to me back then, and listening to the full album didn't make me like the music more than I liked it back then. The vocals are easily recognizable, and a weight too heavy to carry for me to like this album.

oh, nostalgia

I've heard a couple of their songs in the past, but never really paid attention, so this is my first real listen to their music. Energetic, fun, and super-tight. Somewhat similarity to the Meat Puppets, a band I really like, but with more edge and thrashiness. I like their sense of melody in some of the tracks. Overall, I like this album. Almost a danceable, or at least foot-tapping, version of punk-influenced rock. Some real catchy guitar licks, too. To me, they sound kind of like the garage bands I heard in the mid and late 80s, but at a much higher level of ability, craft, and discipline (in a great way). Fun stuff.

I always leaned more to the Green Day side of the 90's punk revival, and have always heard these guys music as like an angry cousin to Green Day's poppier sound. I dig the rapid downstroke palm-muting vibe these guys use in their songs. Definitely the best album they ever did. I enjoyed revisiting this album a lot more than I expected.

Was skeptical about this album, but the simple melodies and generic lyrics are easy to listen to

Har ibland tänkt på The Offspring som ett band som har guilty pleasure-potential. Har endast hört de kändaste låtarna, och dom kan verkligen slå an en rocknerv i mig, men de känns samtidigt otroligt töntiga. Efter att ha lyssnat igenom detta albumet har bandets status hos mig inte stigit nämnvärt. När The Offspring är bra så är de verk-li-gen bra, men oftast blir det lite för platt och 90-talsamerikanskt. Amerikansk punk har sällan tillräcklig råhet och melodisk känsla, i mitt tycke. Ibland har sångaren Dexter Holland lite för gnällig röst, som i inledningen på Bad Habit. Hatar också hans töntiga jävla spaghettihår. Och han har tydligen släppt en egen hot sauce. Usch. Self Esteem räknas såklart med i de riktigt bra Offspring-låtarna. Det riffet skojar man INTE bort. Bästa låt: Self Esteem.

Doesn't strike me as something that ought to be on the list. Not that I hate it.

Good one, this punk organic sound is a bless after all those synths on this list lol. I’ve never heard this one in full although I’ve liked Come Out and Play & Self Steem ever since I was a kid. Nice to hear the evolution that took them to Americana. (Also, nice that the hidden song is the same one)

Great album for the most part. Some of the tracks don't hold up as well as I remember. Still enjoyable.

Great way to nudge punk a little to the radio. It gets a little samey all at once, but that's the only knock. All trax are pretty good!

I use to listen to some of their top songs all the time, but am not a huge fan of this album as a whole. Come Out and Play and Self Esteem are awesome, but all the other songs kind of sound the same.

With more listening, there is more nuance to the singles where it's faux ska with high pitches shouting and slabs of guitars.

One of my all-time fav punk albums

An all time great. Probably the best punk album to come out of 1994. Right at the blossoming of my musical tastes as a child. This is nostalgic for me. Probably listened to this album 100 times. Just as good as the first time.

Tämä oli kova juttu silloin aikanaan ala-asteella ja kulkenut mukana myös opiskeluaikoina ja ihan viime aikoinakin, edelleen timanttista tavaraa. Eihän tämä mitään korkeakulttuuria ole, mutta energiaa ja asennetta on sitäkin enemmän. Self Esteem on tässä se tärkein biisi.

Ensimmäisiä CD:ita joita omistin, ja tämä olikin koko lapsuuden ja nuoruuden lempparilevyjä Green Dayn Dookien yms ohessa. Vaikea arvosteltava, koska valitettavasti nostalgia ei riitä aivan kannattelemaan tätä levyä enää nykyään. Levyllä ei sinänsä ole yhtään huonoa tai ärsyttävää kappaletta, mutta huippuhetket jäävät aika väljähtäneiksi. Ennen kuuntelua oletin tämän olevan vähintään nelonen, mutta valitettavasti kolmonen on osuvampi arvosana.

pretty corny but fairly fun to listen to, i think a couple of the songs in the middle section could have been cut out. i never realized before how nirvana-influenced they are, it really shows on some of these songs. 6/10

7/10. The album cover really made me think I was going to dislike this. Honestly I probably would have liked it a bit less if there hadn't been some familiar songs that helped me get into it a bit more.

Sounds like music that would be in a Tony Hawk game. Not always a fan of the vocals but there are some classics on here. 7

I don't hate this, it does remind me of uni students with long greasy hair and plans to drink lots of beer once they finish studying with this blasting out and rollups filling their ashtrays. It is a big cheesy lyrically but it has great rhythms and it is really melodic vocally. I honestly am very happy to keep listening to the end.

You have to be in a certain mood to enjoy this album, otherwise it gets annoying. Loved some parts but could have been shorter or with more variety.

Pretty great punk album. Pop-punk, but with an agressive edge. Dosent have a whole lot of variety though, even by punk standards. Closer to a 3.5

Wasn't feeling it until Genocide, that was a banger. 'Come out and Play' and 'Self Esteem' were pretty nostalgic (or at least well know). 3.4?

Come Out and Play is an all-time great, but I may be biased as a huge fan of both ECW and FMW.

Smash is definitely the right title for the album, because every song is like a smash to the face of pure punk ferocity. The Offspring walk the fine line of being tonally aware, hardcore, pissed off, and a little funny all at the same time and it’s flawlessly executed. This was the jumping off point for every 90s kid who didn’t know where to start with punk rock.

A few tracks stand out but there’s not enough here to merit repeat listening. The production on the vocals is just awful! Sounds like he’s singing underwater!

I remember this as a better album than it is nowadays. It's a nice collection of proper punk rock songs. The problem is that there are so many such albums. It does not really stand out.

Starts out really fun. The kind of Rock music that I like. Great drums, nice melodies driving bass. Really good in the middle not quite as strong g towards the end but overall a solid album 3 stars.

My first journey into The Offspring world! a huge load of adrenaline!

Enjoyed more than RHCPs previously rated album but not as artistically good. Although many songs are similar in style the popular hits are great. EDIT: Again, this one needed to be updated. Having RCHP, The Band and The Offspring were such a strong start that didn’t prepare me for what this list held. This is also a fantastic alternative album that I play often. 8.4/10

Ugh, obviously a pretty iconic band but started to all sound the same toward the end. Was not my favorite but worth listening to for the classics

Of course, self esteem is a banger. Unfortunately, on first listen, no other song comes even close to the coherence and catchy-ness of the hit. The narrator did not seem to fit the theme, which may have been intentional, but it was still a bit jarring. I like some punk rock, but I do not see myself going back to the offspring any time soon. The hidden track was nice, though

At points the vocals made me think I was listening to Weird Al. "Gotta Get Away" had serious Nirvana vibes. Overall not a bad variety of songs.

If I could give half stars, this would be a 2.5.

Not for 37 year old me

It was fun to revisit this one, even if it wasn’t revelatory. It’s about as straightforward as 90s Epitaph punk gets, with double-time drums and probably the same distortion pedal everyone was using. Some tracks really hold up well, especially “Bad Habit” and the singles, featuring memorable lyrics from future PhD Dexter Holland. There are some ska songs of the era that hold up well, “What Happened To You” is not one of them. The 2nd half in general is less memorable in general, and they ape Bad Religion more than I remember, but it’s still a fun listen.

Great album and brings me back to the Summer of my Sophomore year. No each time I add Gringo Bandito to my eggs or Wahoo's fish tacos I hear Bad Habit in my head.

Liked a decent amount of the songs a lot. A couple were kinda bad like 'Killboy Powerhead'. Audio quality is definitely dated. Would've appreciated a but more variety in the album, but it was good for what it was.

This album is quite hard rock-y? Or something like that. I am not the biggest fan of the hard rock-y aspect.

The talking in the intro makes me a little uncomfortable. Overall a little too intense and repetitive-sounding for my taste.

I'm a big fan of the offspring's album Americana and I love some of their singles. This started slow for me but definitely picked up on the second half of the album where I geek they find their feet with bangers such as Self Esteem, Smash and What Happened To You embodying the sound of 90s America. With lyrics like "I'm not a trendy asshole, don't give a fuck if it's good enough for you" the Offspring cement themselves as one the teenage angst punk rock heavyweights.

Possibly one of my most listened to albums ever. Feels like I know every note on the album, yet there's still a lot of nostalgia when listening today. Brings me back to riding my bike everywhere in the summer between 8th grade & freshman year. This album and Green Day "Dookie" were the ones in my ear when biking to football practice & then to Muirfield to caddy. These are the kinds of albums that I listened to non-stop as a kid, but for some reason fell into the "guilty pleasures" category after that. Probably because I discovered so much music and went through so many listening phases that I felt like anything I listened to in middle school/high school is sub-par just because I liked it before my music taste "matured".

This album has a driving and biting sound that helped push and draw in new audiences to the 90's punk / alternative scene. With several larger singles, even the B-sides are solid.

Huge nostalgia throughout this album. Pretty sure we had this album on tape. Offspring were big when I was pretty young.

I’ve always loved this album. One of my favourites and reminded me of how great The Offspring are. I still like them and enjoy the odd song but discount them because they aren’t the same band I grew up with.

Excellent one of my favorites

Mixed feelings but that's what I expected. I think The Offspring are good at what they do, plenty of great guitar riffs, high energy and attitude, lots of good moments with backed up vocals that I like. But they fall into that quantity over quality trap where they make lots of high energy songs, but don't have enough variety in style and dynamics (the singer is pretty much shouting for the whole album). I think these guys and NOFX triggered a real 90s punk movement, which spawned many bands I like more, but I can't listen to too much of this fast-paced double-time drum stuff coz it slowly turns into a wall of sound and is a little too samey. I like this band a lot but this album in particular, not so much.

Good punk for it's time, but doesn't have the same impact as other artists in the genre.

Come out to play and self esteem are particular highlights for me as they are more the vibe of offspring I prefer. The rest of the album is filled with the more thrashier side of punk which I'm less bothered about.

It's albums like this that make me unsure of the book's intentions. Surely there are 1001 rock albums alone better than this. The songs are indistinguishable yelling sessions about nothing over boring rhythmic guitar and drums. Nirvana with worse musicians and worse lyrics

In "Gotta Get Away", Dexter Holland shouts "Life is like a riddle and I'm really stumped". Replace life with music, songwriting, or art and you get the thesis of this album: a group of guys stumped about making music, but for some God-forsaken reason trying to do it anyways. Sometimes the songs aren't half bad ("Come Out and Play (Keep 'em Separated)"; "What Happened to You?"). But, those songs hardly redeem this album. "Bad Habit" sounds like a Bleach C-side where Holland has a quarter of Cobain's charisma and none of his songwriting ability. I assume "Genocide" was some sort of protest against the Rwandan Genocide, but it is filled with trite cliches and meaningless words that are supposed to convince the listener of what exactly? If it wasn't meant as a protest song to the Rwandan Genocide, then these guys are fucking tone deaf idiots. Judging from "It'll Be a Long Time", they probably are. The song says nothing meaningful, and is filled with truly poetic lines like "Superpowers flex their wings/Hold the world on puppet strings". Someone should tell Holland that protest songs are supposed to say something meaningful about the present day (a la System of a Down) and that sarcasm is only effective if the writer has an interesting point to drive home (a la Green Day).

For Offspring it's a good album, especially cause it came out when I was about 15 and crazy times with fast beats

Growing up, this is what loads of my friends listened to. It wasn't really my bag, but I suppose I could be described as 'pop-punk adjacent' - not a fan, but more familiar than the average punter by dint of exposure. I remember thinking Smash was fine at the time, no more, no less. And I think I was right. All quite samey, not exactly a breadth of tone or instrumentation to marvel at, but okay nonetheless.

A couple of songs are okay, but after a while it becomes boring and repetitive

I was pleasantly surprised by “Smash”. The album came out in 1994, The Offspring I grew up with never seemed to take themselves seriously with songs like “Pretty Fly (For a White Guy), and “Original Prankster”. Smash made me realize why people revered the band so much. Dexter Holland’s vocals are so recognizable and are a force on their own throughout the album. Noodles Wasserman, Greg K, and drummer Ron Welty worked masterfully together. Welty’s drumming really set the tone with him keeping the tempo at a blistering pace. Again I was more than surprised by the album and works give it an 8.3 out of 10.

90s punk. Pretty good; I never really cared for The Offspring but this album is better than I expected. Couple familiar songs on this album (Come Out and Play, Self Esteem). 8/10.

Ruido del que sí me gusta, en general, pues toda la vibra noventerona y una que otro lyric a gusto. Yo digo que "Self Esteem" sí es la mejor y por eso es la más escuchada en Spotify (por muchísimo). La otra que me gustó es "What Happened To You?". En sí, me gustó más la segunda mitad. 8/10

Just as important as Dookie for reviving my punk rock, this great album is edgier with far more guitar riffs and licks giving the Offspring their special brand of pop punk. Great run time but the vocals can be a bit annoying, sounding almost like a Weird Al parody of punk at times.

First time listening. Quick 45 album with some familiar songs and “The Offspring” vibes

Solid punk music, but it's just not my style.

Back in the day, I found the radio singles ("Come Out and Play" and "Self Esteem") fun but never really explored the album. The band is easy to categorize as pop punk, and some people like to throw the term "metal" into the mix, and to me they sort of blended in alongside quite a few other bands. I'm glad I checked out the whole album, and it was fun to go back and hear those hit songs within their context.

1.5. There was a time in my life where I could tolerate Dexter's voice. That time has passed. The only upside is how perfectly it captures pissed off early 90s teenagers.

Brauch ich gar nicht anhören. Mein Favorit ist zwar Americana, aber Smash macht mich auch ziemlich hibbelig. Ich möchte Menschen schubsen, mich in fremdem Schweiß wälzen, in Bier duschen und ein bisschen Skateboard fahren. Merkel, mach Clubs auf, ey.

Und explizit diese alten gebürsteten Metalltische vor der Tanze vor der Bar zur Dj-Kanzel (die mit der Tribünenmäsigen anstieg), wo ich zum ersten mal mal verschiedene Dinge erfahren durfte: 1. BHs sind viel stabiler als ich dachte. 2. Kaschieren viel mehr dazu als ich dachte. 3. Brüste sind wirklich sehr weich. 4. Isy kann wirklich nicht gut küssen (ich kanns ja wohl nicht gewesen sein) 5. Leuten ist wirklich scheissegal was mal in dem Laden macht. 6. Saufen macht mich zum Aufreisser. 5* Liebs ganz ganz arg

Well this really isn't my thing - but I didn't hugely hate it either, which surprised me. Also, cannot believe this was 1994, thought it was later than that. Feel it may have been ahead of its time

Pretty good punk, but no real variety or depth

Surprised a little bit by these songs - many of them seem more "serious" straight-ahead punk, as opposed to most of their radio songs which seem more like joke songs. I definitely enjoyed it. Not sure it belongs with the greats though. The hidden track reminded me of the old days, listening to 6 minutes of silence to hear some weird little ditty.

The first CD I ever owned. It brings me back to that specific moment in time, even after all these years. It's affirming to me that I have good enough taste for this record to be on this list.

Great album. It really shows off the sound that is the offspring. Not a radical departure from their previous works but enough to freshen up their music. This also contains a lot of singles that were, for most people , their intro to the offspring. Well worth a listen and for anyone looking to get into some good punk rock.

Come out and Play, Self Esteem Offspring are fun

This came out when I was 13-14 years old. I was pretty much the target audience for this and it never really grabbed me back then. Still doesn't. I have a certain nostalgic thing for "Self Esteem" but that's about it. That one in particular has a more Nirvana like feel which is probably why I'm more attracted to it. Oh man the "secret track" at the end - forgot about those and how they'd translate to modern streaming. So of it's time.

I have a soft spot for this album. Hearing "Self Esteem" on the radio was unique since it was so negative, which wasn't common in the 90s on Rochester's pop radio. I've heard maybe half of this album's tracks? Kind of reminds me of the Ace of Spades album by Motorhead, like all the songs kind of blend together but they got a thing going on and they are nailing what they are aiming for. Fast and loose. Would have been fun to listen to them in a dive bar before they got popular! I'd rate it higher than Motorhead since this feels like it aged better.

"Ahh, it's time to relax." This album is amazing. I first listened to it when I was around 10, and it really got me into a lot of the rock and punk that I love now. If I could rate this album higher than 5, I would.

Not bad. A couple of old cool get fired up songs. Solid entry.

Generally like The Offspring. These songs were all new to me (total lie lol I just didn't recognize track names). Very nice album. Good driving music.

Classic, proto-Nirvana style rock. A lot of known hits in this album, which get better on a second listen.

The Offspring are a bit of a mystery to me. They're clearly capable of elevating and in some ways redefining punk, but often content to settle down and succumb to the laziest tropes of the genre. Fortunately, most of their best work is captured in one album. If you were to make a true best of compilation, you might grab one or two from elsewhere, but the collection would start and end with Smash. It's filled with allusions and wordplay that reward repeated listens, and you'll want to listen again, because it fucking rocks. I don't know if it's a shame that they couldn't replicate that success or a blessing that they did it once. Best track: Come Out and Play

I've heard this album 100s of times. One of my best friends wore out 3 copies on CD when we were younger. Still great. Favorite tracks: "Bad Habit", "Killboy Powerhead", "Self Esteem"

Love the energy on this album, but his voice is on the whiny side. Favorite tracks were Come Out And Play, and It'll Be A Long Time.

Turns out the length of a song is about all I can tolerate. Listened in short bursts throughout the day. A whole album is just too much at once. Love the songs I know, though!
