What a voice. For some reason when I'm cleaning or working around the house I like to put on some Al Green or Sam Cooke and just vibe away. Great album from a very very talented man.

Al Green - great voice, great vibes, but not my type of songs here. It’s a three for the music but Al’s vocals bump it to a four.

I always perceived soul as tasteless pop music of the 70s, with some highlights throughout. Beyond Marvine Gaye and Stevie Wonder who innovated what was possible with soul, there were little artists who could make something of the genre, but Al Green is the exception of an artist who could make albums of pure soul (no progressive shenanigans) and no filler. Whenever I want to chill and take a break from rock or high energy pop or electronic, Al Green is typically one of the first artists who come to my mind, and the pinnacle of his work "Let's Stay Together" hits the spot in just about every way. Everything is spot on. Highlight is Al Green's energetic and emotional voice, always pleasing to the ear and never boring, especially when he pulls off his falsetto. Huge fan of the back vocals, both Chalmers's support and the gospel-like female vocals. Horns are used sparingly but their delivery is well-received. Rhythm section ensures each song is diverse and maintains its groove, incorporating funk while staying focused and consistent. The strings and back vocals come together so well in "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart." You know they did something right when you hear the song a million times and you're shocked to see it's actually 6.5 minutes long. As for the song themselves, obviously starts off strong but I usually don't get into it until the groove of the 4th song. I'm really into the next few songs, but I feel like the album should end with "How Can You Mend" but "Judy" would also working as an appropriate epilogue. I guess I just wasn't a fan of "It Ain't No Fun to Me." But really, it's a highly enjoyable and short listen, and certainly a top soul recommendation to anyone.

One of the great soul voices. And the music is fantastic. The horns! The strings! “Let’s Stay Together” is a great song. And “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” is phenomenal — might be the best track here. I love the strings around 2:45 that imitate the wind. I’m a fan of stuff like that in music.

Let’s stay together: very funky. Just a really chill song that, if it was written about me, I would unconditionally love that person forever. Tells a very cool story and the combination of instruments is very cool and I love the drums. 3/5 La-la for you: I feel for al here. Starts to go bad. But still feels good!!! That piano is very cool and one thing that is repeated throughout this album is the guitar! I just don’t know what it’s going to do. A very good soul song with a continuing story. 3/5 So you’re leaving me today: just a bit of gospel music is what I needed in my life. This song carries on the smoothness of the previous tracks but the vocals, I believe, have been taken to another level. Someone just answer to why she’s leaving him!!!! 3/5 What is this feeling: so the story continues! This track is exceptionally smooth. The initial pace of the drums really do set how laid back it is. I dunno if it’s a trumpet but it just gently breezes through segments in this song and is just lifted by the backing vocals. Very cool. 4/5 Old Time Lovin: the backing vocals really do make this song. The guitar as well really sweeps on nicely with this song. It just carries on the gentle breeze in autumn sweeping the leaves along the ground as an old school caveat glides past you and the Walkman hangs loosely from your pockets! 3/5 I’ve never found a girl: now this is what the album needed! An upbeat-ish song. For me soul music gets repetitive so a song like this after a few of the same really does keep the album listenable and enjoyable. All the instruments lend themselves greatly to his voice but it’s nothing new. In isolation it’s another great song. However, in terms of the album it doesn’t really add much. 2/5 How can you mend a broken heart: the most melancholy song on here but one of the best. You lift and float to another place! The backing vocals really do add a whole new level to this song!It picks up towards the end and his becomes really emotive!! 4/5 Judy: He’s done it!!! He has found someone! A good song and an upbeat one but I don’t think it does anything new! 2/5 It ain’t no fun to me: what a funky way to end off a brilliant and possibly best album yet!!! De esos discos de los que has seguramente escuchado más de una rola y cuando las oyes todas juntas resulta que hacen un gran conjunto en un paquete de 34 minutos. Sin desperdicio. La voz y la instrumentación me encantan, y me gusta mucho que aunque todo tiene un feeling de sensualidad, no raya en lo pegostioso de Depeche Mode por ejemplo.

Pretty okay album. I love the soulful and expressive vocals from Green. My main issue is with the mixing. Everything is so understated to the point that it all blends together and feels too mushy. Also, I didn’t like how every song just faded out really quickly. Might listen again if I have to.

Oh, yes, the good Reverend Green...hecks YES! Absolutely love this album. If all it had on it was the title track, it would still be great. I've been getting more into 60s/70s soul, funk, and R&B, and that world of music is proving to be a genuine treasure trove of beautiful musical gems...like this album.

Al Green’s pure vision of love always inspires me. He’s just so damn wholesome, never running around playing, but seeking the natural end of love: to give himself completely to one woman for life. I love the touches of his sweet, sexy falsetto. Also this album has one of the best covers of any song ever: Green’s rendition of the Gibb brothers’ “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?” I believe him when he sings.

I saw Al Green at a free concert in the Sydney Domain in January 2010. After being told the place was full & being turned away, I crawled under a rope partition & ran into the crowd. I was not gonna miss Reverand Al. And he delivered. I reckon the majority of the crowd had been introduced to Al Green by the inclusion of this album’s title track in Tarentino’s Pulp Fiction. In the wake of that I saw him perform the song on Letterman in early 1995. He was outstanding - so relaxed, laid back & in the groove that he & producer Willie Mitchell had created decades earlier. His sound is unique. This album is not full of hit singles but it flows. It immerses the listener. The oddity on the record is his cover of The Bee Gees’ How Can You Mend A Broken Heart (the only time I saw them was not far from the Domain, also outdoors in the old Showground in January 1972). This song had toppedgthe American charts in 1970. What Green does with the track on this album is remarkable. He totally slows it down and he makes it his own. I really liked the original, but Al gives it soul & takes it to a whole new emotional level. My copy of this LP is on Motown, who distributed Hi Records back-catalogue in the 80’s. Hardly surprising. It’s a great listen.

While know and love the title track well, I had never sat down and listened to this album all the way through. The joy of hearing this all the way through for the first time has been wonderful. I love the laid back, funky, generally simple arrangements that provide a perfect backing for the Rev Green's vocal stylings. His effortless transition into falsetto sounds so easy. But it has an authentic groove that sits deep in the music. Love this record. I need to rush out and get me a copy.

Great 70's funk soul sound. Hard to beat these groovy jams. Al Green was the Man. The mix is very laid back, and Al takes the center stage. Mellow horn section sounds right in the pocket. This was my first album listen on this series.

Soul isn't generally my genre but there's something about Al Green's effortless energy that is just wonderful. I'm not sure what else to say. The man is an incredible performer and the musicianship was top-notch. Really enjoyable.

Rhythms totally his own, soulfulness as intelligent as it comes. He's touched by god and passing it along to you. Savour the moment. (A little too long on the slow tempos to compete with his best work.)

Obviously a very funky record, but also mellows you out like a deflated marshmallow. It's sweet on the ears and loud when it wants to be too. I think the only criticism I can give is that the album cover is really bad. That awful wall texture and generic drippy text do not match the music at all.

A really smooth, breezy, yet groovy soul album. 'Lets Stay Together' is instantly recognizable, 'La La For You' has some nice chord changes but a lot of the songs are fairly average. I like the production which is quite bottom heavy (at times you can barely hear the guitars) focusing on the mellow grooves and brass. Of course Green's vocals are superb throughout, bumping up the overall quality a notch or two. It's likeable and l can totally appreciate it's classic album status.

Wanting less than 3 stars is incorrect, and you should try harder on your next listen.

Although I knew of "Let's Stay Together" before, I can't ignore the influence that the Pulp Fiction soundtrack added to my late teens. Yup 90s nostalgia of a 70s tune! No other standout tracks on the rest of the album, but still enjoyable contemplative easy listening.

Hugely iconic soul, one of these albums where it’s hard to credit so many classic songs cheek to jowl. Green’s biography suggests a pretty problematical individual, but it seems I’ve decided to put such considerations to the side for this project.

‘Let’s Stay Together’ is that perfect balance of ballads and RnB funk grooves, effortlessly shifting between tempos without missing a beat. It’s full of tight musicianship and Al Green has a serious singing voice, full of emotion and range. It’s just a super solid soul album all round.

I had never heard this whole thing before and was a little bit disappointed. Title track is incredible of course, but there weren't any other great ones. Nothing bad either, fine to have in the background, but probably not something I'd return to.

This is the kind of stuff that if I hear one song in a movie soundtrack I go - that sounds great. A whole album of it doesn't work as well.

A nice start to the week.

Soul perfection. The Reverend does have the most beautiful voice, and this album showcases it perfectly from start to finish. The backing never intrudes, supporting the main attraction, and the backing vocals lift Al’s vocal up further. There is nothing about this I don’t love - beautiful songs, arrangements, production and of course THAT voice above it all.

What an album! Al is performing in the studio, rather than just recording - quite a distinction. There are so many subtle changes in vocal style. How Can You Mend a Broken Heart is more than the perfect pop song. Pretentious warning alert: it's a work of art that can't be beaten. The Hammond organ holds it all together, along with the horn stabs. Amazing stuff.

Let's Stay Together starts with a humdinger of a title track and then just cruises through soft, soulful pop, a genre you can listen to for ages without ever getting tired or bored of it. Not an example of best in class but a 3/5 floor for sure, doesn't rise much above it but will never let you down.

Dayum, Reverend Al. Al Green's voice is instantly recognizable and iconic. Let's Stay Together is an amazing song kicking off an amazing album. The Memphis 70s sound is so prevalent on here. The album includes the Reverend's cover of the Bee Gee's 'How Can You Mend A Broken Heart' which, may be better than the original, it's very close. How many cover songs can do that? 4/5.

Nice. Obviously *Pulp Fiction* has done a great job getting audiences acquainted with the 70s soul gem that gives this album its title. And I can't say the rest of the record was an unpleasant listen (half of those tracks are nicely done, there's no arguing about that). On the other hand, I'm a bit skeptical whether this album as a whole can be classified as an "essential listen", especially compared with masterworks from Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding or Stevie Wonder. Maybe this was a bad day for me to dive into a soul album, but frankly, I'm not sure what separates those tracks from Barry White stuff sometimes (apart from their diametrically opposed voices, that goes without saying). I leave this as a question mark here. Maybe with a little more time on my hands, I'll get more attuned to the subtleties of this album, who knows? Number of essential listens : more than a third so far, I've temporarily lost count here... oh another classic soul album here, The Rev. Green doing what he did best and laying down the most seduce-able music possible, that smooth, smooth voice and the great backing band are superb. I absolutely love the Brother Gibbs "How can you mend a broken heart" with Al's timing on this as near to perfect as anything in the soul/r & b oeuvre. Of course another classic in the title track which is a standard now of course. Love Al and love this Album.

First at all, let me address the elephant in the room, I cannot but remember that Pulp Fiction scene between Butch and Marcelus Wallace while listening to the first track. The rest of the album flows perfectly, it’s quite an experience definitely. Really set me in a good mood.

Such a smooth voice, and yet seemingly such a cunt. Anyway, as a fan of rap, i separate the music from the person. This one is a bit too smooth.

The forward influence is clear, even for those who don’t where this falls in pantheon of classic R&B. Band is tight -- a Platonic ideal as much as a point in time. Green's vocal quality seems more distinctive and extremely versatile than all-timey, perhaps too effortfully here and there.

What a corker of an album! Al Green is a legend and this is a legendary album. An absolute joy to listen to. What a hero, so influential and really to my personal taste too. A full five stars from me, no negatives to be found here.

Nothing much to say other than this is a classic. Let's Stay Together is one of my favorite songs ever. I hadn't heard any of the others songs but they're all great. The trumpets throughout the album give it the classic. Old time lovin' is a particularly great song that I just heard for the first time. Al Green has one of the best voices in music history?

Haven't put this album on since college. I listened to it twice back to back. My faves are still the title track and How Can You Mend a Broken Heart. Those strings after "I can still feel the breeze..." is one of those little magical musical moments. This album is so easy to listen to, and I just love his voice.

Genre: Southern Soul 4/5 Al Green. One of music’s best falsettos and a perennial favorite among all ages. His sound and production was of the times, but it was his voice, calm, soothing, and soaring with enough emotion to make anybody feel, set him apart from the rest of the Soul artists at the time. The title track is one of his biggest hits and is a true gem, but the 6-minute How Can You Mend a Broken Heart is a knockout. No skips on this one, even those that are a bit more color-by-numbers. But it’s all good. It’s Al Green, man.

12/10/2021 Today's Album: "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green - Coming directly off of listening to that terrible Tom Waits album, this album sounds like a hug. The production is already so warm and welcoming, with a booming groovy bassline and Al's subtle vocals. This beginning song is a very laid back and peaceful love song. This second song picks things up with a swinging back beat and these smooth piano lines. The production on the drums particularly is so good but everything sounds immaculate. The horns are a really nice part of this song. It almost feels like an end of movie song, like the task is completed and the heroes are happy.This song has a similar vibe to the others, but its a distinctly different feel and the hooks are completely different. Ooh that horn line in What is This Feeling is so nice. I love the groove of this song and the soft organ in the background is so nice. I like the swelling horns as well. I think the song structure is getting boring for me, but I think each of these tracks individually are great. Old Time Lovin' is a nice soft love song. It's like an instrumental that could have been done by the late Beatles with Al just being all horny over top of it lmao. I've Never Found a Girl is a nice track. I feel like these instrumentals get me really hyped up for the vocals and the vocals are always underwhelming, but I feel like it somehow works well all together. I just think I'm expecting a bit more nuance in the lyricism. The instrumentals are fantastic, though. There's a great horn solo in this song and I think it really works since Al isn't really singing much. How Can You Mend a Broken Heart has a way more straightforward song structure and I think it makes it a really nice song. Judy is sort of the same thing Al has been doing this whole album and It Ain't No Fun to me is a nice closer with a soft fade out. Overall this album is ok. His vocal range and ability to jump around is seriously impressive. The instrumentation does a lot to compliment it too. Soul isn't my area of expertise but I dig this.

Really fun album to listen to in the morning. Helped get my day started and I know I've heard Let's Stay Together before because it was instantly recognizable. This week, however, felt like album after album of just ok albums that didn't really do anything for me save for a few fun songs. This one is part of that group, a good album that I probably won't listen to again. I'm sorry Al, we probably won't stay together.

Great classic soul album. The title track is enough to hook me in. This slipped into the background pretty easily, but here I mean that as a compliment because it was just nice, easy listening. Sometimes, 35 minutes of gospel twinged soul is exactly what you need to be listening to. Opens with Let's Stay Together, never tops it, but very few have in the 50 odd years since. That sentence feels a bit harsh on How Do You Mend A Broken Heart, but you have a proper 11/10 track as the opener. I'd have hidden it halfway through the album to make sure the rest gets used! Shout out to the band as well - the guitar never does what you're expecting it to do. Brilliant stuff. As a side note, if I saw an album by somebody looking that cool on the front cover, I'd still give it a listen today.

You can call me Al. If Cee-Lo Green is the Soul Machine then who is Al? Compared to Al, Cee-Lo Green is the Tim Meadow's character from The Lady's Man. Oh-- not familiar with The Lady's Man? Search up Netflix if you want, but the real deal is on this album right here. I'm not sure of their connection, but if they are related it must be distant. Cee-Lo isn't even in the same ballpark as Al Green. Even so, Cee-Lo Green would be the guy cooking Oscar Mayer weiners at the concession stand while Al is putting the moves on his girl. Why don't they make music like Let's Stay Together anymore? This album exists in a different era. Turn it on and be transported to a different place in time. Go ahead, dim the lights, this is the stuff of late Saturday nights. Lo-fi recordings on the slow pace are great for indulgent relaxation. Simple songs, basic riffs, some backup singers, Al's high notes and songs that fade out. Oh yeah.. let's get deep, balls deep... Cee-Lo and the ladies man can Netflix and Chill. This soul album from the 70's is Al Green's fourth. It is critically acclaimed for the beautiful soul music and Al Green's smooth lyrics & golden voice. I enjoyed this album, but it's not something I would listen to normally.

Mmmmm buttery smooth, but it still grooves. The epitome of soul. The horns add the requisite amount of tension while the rest of the arrangements are smooth as silk. This is a great album. Did I mention how smooth it is. 4 stars

Enjoyed this album more than I thought it would, it flowed well and resonated even on first listen. The mid tracks stood out - What Is this Feeling, Old Time Lovin' and I've Never Found A Girl. Left me wanting to listen to it again, incredible given it is almost 50 years old.

Big fan of the sounds of this album, only thing I'm not 100% on board with is the lyrics because it seems to mostly be about being/longing to be in a relationship. But I'm not gonna be too harsh on it. Every song on this sounds distinct while simultaneously having a nice flow throughout the entire project. Definitely gonna add it to my Discogs wantlist. Added every single song to my playlist. The highest of quality

Liked it a lot, very calm and relaxing. Have only heard one song by Al Green in the past so it was very nice to hear all of these.

A phenomenal soul album from one of the genre's greats. Green has a great catchy, emotive vocal performance and its back by some really nice groovy, lush soul back drops. I especially enjoyed the brass used to elevate particular moments in this one.
