Best Song: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart. This song is the perfect combination of powerful and gentle. Worst Song: It Ain't No Fun to Me. A bit too rock and roll for me. Too much of a deviation from what made the rest of the album so great. Overall: Really good soul like this always amazes me at how it's able to simultaneously sound so tight musically while presenting such a loose and relaxed vibe. Nothing feels out of place, every decision feels intentional, and that meticulousness sounds as the perfect backdrop for Green's softly delivered vocals.

His voice is great and the dated production really works well to create the old school soul feel. He displays his musical range on this album from slow heartbreak ballads to upbeat love songs, and he does them all well. There is a reason that this album is one of his most critically acclaimed, and I don't feel like I can add a whole lot of new ways to iterate that this album is wonderful. This record makes me fond of a time that I never experienced and makes me wish that I had been there. Score Breakdown: 4.111 & 5 -> 4.556

"Let's Stay Together" is the fourth studio album by American soul singer and songwriter Al Green and a follow-up to his moderately successful "Al Green Gets Next to You." The album was produced by Willie Mitchell who also co-wrote with Al several songs. It marked the beginning of Green's clasic period of critically acclaimed albums and was also a commercial succes hitting #8 on the US pop charts and debuting at #1 on the soul charts. Horns open the title track "Let's Stay Together." Green's voice goes from falsetto to whisper. Strong female backing vocals. It doesn't get much more soulful than this. It was a song that also put in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for its artistic significance. Green uses his falsetto throughout "La-La For You." Romantic horns and subtle guitar. "What Is This Feeling" is more uplifting with the horns. Green's adds crooning with his falsetto. More solid backing vocals. Green covers Eddie Floyd's "I've Never Found a Girl (Who Loves Me Like You)." Layered horns open. This time backing male vocals. And besides the open track, the highlight of the album is his cover of the Bee Gees' "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart." A gentle version with guitar, organ and strings. Green whispers and builds the song ending with him shouting. Just fantastic. This album shows the full range of Al Green's voice from whispering to falsetto to crooning to screaming. Horns drive the melody in most cases with the band laying down the rhythm. Prominent and strong baking vocals. This just oozes soul. Hard to see anyone not liking this to some extent.
this album is just as smooth and delightful as i had hoped. like, buttery smooth. i'd be surprised if it wasn't one of the smoothest albums on this project! because of al green's voice and the album's tone, let's stay together is a delightful, joyful listen, even with some sorrowful songs. really, al green covering "how can you mend a broken heart" by the bee gees seems rather on brand. i was so charmed by this album, and i'm so happy i listened to it.
This is a short, sweet, and REALLY good soul album. Each song is given incredible care and depth. Al's voice is outstanding, full, and emotional on every track. Like the best soul singers, Al Green makes you feel what he's feeling. Most of the tracks here are written by Green, too! He's definitely a triple threat on this album. Coming in at just over 34 minutes, this album leaves you satisfied but wanting more...a good place to end up, I imagine!

I strongly recommend against trying to sing Let’s Stay Together at Karaoke. Al Green can sing and has an amazing range. I don’t recall hearing this album before. He handles different styles of songs very well. There is lots to enjoy besides the hits.
Al Green had a lovely voice and I was impressed by the fact that he co-wrote Let's Stay Together, which is truly a song for the ages. He doesn't have the voice of someone with a history of beating up women (guys too, but usually he had his heavies do that).
Let’s stay together is of course one of the all-time greatest soul singles and a monster track. He also does a serviceable cover of the Bee Gees’ How can you mend a broken heart. The remainder of the album is pretty generic soul though, and did not resonate as much for me.

Pretty solid all the way though but Let's Stay Together is a clear high point, what a track. Old Time Lovin' and How Can You Mend a Broken Heart (didn't realize this was a BeeGees cover until now) are other highlights.

I enjoyed the nuance on this record, particularly with Let's Stay Together. Green's voice and the instrumental backing complement each other rather than competing for attention. First listen might sound like background music, but subsequent listens had me stopping what I was doing to appreciate this one. Green excels at taking relatable themes (each stage of a relationship) and defining those feelings through each track. Highlight: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart - honest and delicately sung.
Fantastic R&B album. It Ain’t Fun No More is my favorite track on the album
Fully expected this to be a bit cheesy, but it was surprisingly smooth and enjoyable the whole way through. The title track towers over everything else here, but some of the lesser known tracks were quite good too. Incredible singing, but the production was a bit too raw perhaps, made it sound like a much older album than it is.

This was one of the first soul albums I've listened to, so I don't really feel qualified to review it. However, it was a great listen, bringing a nice atmosphere and mood with every song on it. Definitely something I will compare the upcoming soul albums to.
Half decent soul music. Bit too slow and boring in most parts though. Would flick between 2&3 stars depending on my mood, I'll give it 3 today though. 2.5*
While Al has a smooth voice, most of the songs aren't memorable.
Before today, I'd never heard of Al Green before. He is a R&B/soul singer, similar to Curtis Mayfield, or Sam Cooke. Al's life started out a bit crazy, as is the case with a lot of singers strangely. His family were strong Christians, and he got his start singing gospel music in church as a kid. He was kicked out of the house at a young age because he was caught listening to Elvis. He was, perhaps, drawn to popular music because it was taboo to his religious family. Al went on to begin his music career. This album is his fourth studio recording. His style of almost whispering into the mic, and moving the microphone close then far away from his mouth to almost manually layer his vocals was amazing. His music is super catchy! The drummer on this album was from Booker T and the M.G.'s. (Al Jackson Jr.). A few years after this album was released, Al suffered a tragedy in the form of his wife throwing hot grits on him while he was soaking in the tub, then shooting and killing herself before he could intervene. That was one of the events that transpired, which drove Al back to religion. He is now a preacher of a church in Memphis. This was a teriffic album. It would be perfect mood music for a weekend morning, or a dinner party. Favourite songs: It Ain't No Fun To Me, What is This Feeling, Let's Stay Together, So You're Leaving, La-La For You, Old Time Lovin' Least favourite songs: I've Never Found A Girl 4/5

I'm not sure why, but I liked this very much. Some songs you recognize instantly, but mostly all of it held very high bar I guess. Compared to some other albums from around the same time, this didn't sound very dated at all and held up very good I'd say!
Smooth listening today. After an opener as "Let's stay together" nothing comes close to topping it. The rest of the album is nice and i enjoy it but nothing really stood out. Bonus points for feeling like I'm in "Pulp Fiction" when the first song starts playing.
this cover is so good, I love that al green is in green slime letters and the face he's making is kind of silly. this reminds me of Christmas because growing up we had a couple Christmas albums that I think he sang on. really good working music, nothing stood out super crazy which is a pro and a con. very very cozy

Sometimes some good soul music can just feel so good. I loved every song on this album but I wish it went on longer.
I've never really listened to soul music much; nor have I actively avoided it. It's interesting that this comes following the 2pac album from Monday because the (very brief) bits of that I could have enjoyed, if it wasn't all so awful, had some of the same vibe this album has permeating the whole thing; although this isn't so much in a different league as on a different planet! I'm listening to most of these whilst working and this is a great album to do that to. His voice is amazing, the music is spot on, the production is so crisp. The conclusion is that I loved listening to this and it's probably the first thing on here that I wouldn't have chosen to listen to but may well revisit in the future, and the possibility of that is exactly why I started doing this in the first place!
I love Al Green but the title track is pulling a lot of the weight. It's GREAT stuff but doesn't quite hit 5 stars for me.
I feel like this album was mostly just included for the title track, which is fair - it’s a great song. The rest of it didn’t really move the needle for me.
This one gets there for the title track alone. Al Green (and Willie Mitchell) were really hitting their stride. The arrangements are exceptional throughout. The horns are perfect, never overpowering the song. Al Green's vocals manage this trick as well - sometimes a whisper sometimes earnest, but always soulful and awesome. Extra points for what may be the best Bee Gees cover ever,

Outside of the first track, I don't know any of these.
I need to listen to this a few more times. It sounds perfect, but like a lot of soul records of that era, it glides part me, leaving babyish tasting notes like "smooth", "incredible musicianship", and "quintessential", but I'm damned if I can remember most of the songs, even on third listen. I like it, the title track is outstanding, it just hasn't stuck with me yet, which may be more my problem. FOUR
Contains the title track, a Bee Gees song, and seven others in very similar vein. Great voice, obvs., but as a wise man once said "stick to the Greatest Hits"
Wow damn that entire album was the definition of chill and I loved it. Head bobbing, eyes closed, easy grooving. Every instrument works together in such impeccable harmony, and everything feels right in the world at least for these 34 minutes.

The only song I already knew when I started this album was the opening track, "Let's Stay Together." Of course, I already loved that song - it's iconic, a classic, it's a fucking jam. I expected that at the very least, the album would be pleasant to listen to. This album exceeded my expectations. I liked the vast majority of the songs, and though there were some I didn't enjoy as much, there were no true "low points" for me. "Let's Stay Together" is probably my favorite track, but I also loved "I've Never Found a Girl," "So You're Leaving," "It Ain't No Fun to Me," and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart." The album as a whole is very good, but I think those are the only songs I'll be likely to revisit.

Nice album on a sunny day. The lyrics Arent always that sunny and there is much love sadnesss. But the happy music covers this well. Nice how the instruments blend together and how the guitars easy switch from arpeggio to groovy rythms. Thats especially the case in old time loving and on how to mend a broken heart. Next to the hit lets stay together and it aint fun to me are these my favourite songs on this record.
'Let's Stay Together' is the best track on this album (by far). But I also liked 'La-La for You' and the cover of 'How Can You Mend a Broken Heart'. Overall a really nice album. 4/5

So romantic! Even the ones about being broken-hearted or getting left ("So You're Leaving," "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart"), are still so romantic and feel-good. This is another one of those "making dinner with your romantic partner" albums. Beautiful. Titular song is my fave. I don't know why the font of the album art is drippy like that, but hey, it's the 70s.
This album has brought soul into a new light for me. The rhythms and instrumentals are so clean, I wish I had listened to this before.

No stand out song but the groove and feel of the album is great. Pure emotion and fun. Soothing to have in the background to enjoy the vibe versus a song in itself.
Enjoyable Soul but just the standard 3 stars from me
Oh, fuck yes. This is my shit. There's nothing about this record that I dislike. The rhythm section is tight, the melody players are tasteful without resorting to simplistic cliche lines, the songs are good, the mix is perfect, the horns and production are well thought out and clear without overpowering... but the real joy here is the warm, smooth, soulful voice. I could listen to Al sing the dictionary.
Loved this album. Great album for a Friday when you're needing something upbeat to wiggle around to!
If this is a four, what am I saving fives for?
Not a genre I’m particularly keen on, but for some reason this record just did it for me. It’s as though the meandering structures of soul have been streamlined into a seriously infectious formula of funky soul pop. Can’t comment on too much else really. As an album, it’s a winner.
Smooth groooooves from Al
Classic soul sound. Very smooth and easy to listen to. The sound is defined by warm horns, soulful rotary organs, dry electric guitars and frequent use of dominant seventh chords. Lyrics are concerned with blue-eyed infatuation, longing and reconciliation.
I challenge you to listen to this album and not sway with the beat. Al Green’s voice combines well with the horns on each song. His backup singers fill in perfectly and he never over sings. He holds back just enough His cover of ‘How To Mend A Broken Heart’ is almost hypnotic in its slow pace. This album made me stop and listen. This isn’t background music. Green holds your attention with his interpretation of each song. A masterpiece

Fantastic. Soulful, chill, and classic.
The title track is great. After that nothing was very memorable but I liked the brass instruments and its not like Al couldn't sing. It was OK overall I guess. Probably only ever going to listen to the title track again I the future though.

Amazing vocals. Great songwriting that keeps you mellow throughout . . . nostalgic for me as a child of the 80s. Similar to alot of what I heard on the radio during my childhood. All of the instruments are clear and easy to hear, not at all overproduced.

Excellent album. Previously I think I had only ever heard the title track before, but this album has some beautiful tracks.
Great cool sound - very mellow. A couple of great songs and the rest good for chilling out.
Ends with exceptional tenderness, fills out the runtime with easily-standard soul. Not a week track, I think.
Al Green’s voice is incredibly sexual and whimpering at once. He savours and laments love so convincingly from line to line you’d swear the rise and fall of his rasp match the convulsions of your heart at the turns of your own love life. Leading with the classic title track, on this album he doesn’t reach the screeching muscularity of ‘Al Green Gets Next to You’ the year previous or the immaculate perfection of ‘I’m Still in Love With You’ 9 months later but he nevertheless unleashes an enjoyable set for the heartstrings of the masses.

Super groovy, it was great as background music while working - and I mean that as a compliment. I made the mistake of reading Al Green’s Wikipedia though. Is there a way to opt out of being recommended people with a history of domestic violence (or similar) allegations? Should I avoid Googling until afterwards, because it ruined listening to the second half of the album lol.

"Let's Stay Together" is a hell of an opening song - unfortunately it kind of peaks there. The other songs are pretty solid but don't really reach the height of the first track.
I love his voice and the way he does his own backing vocals. It's like he's dancing with himself.

An enjoyable, classic soul album, full of great songs. Honestly, if you're going to go for one Al Green album, I'd recommend a greatest hits package, because so many of his best songs are scattered across about half a dozen albums. But this was a pleasure to hear. The star track here is obviously "Let's Stay Together," and nothing else on the album comes close to measuring up to it. But Green brings charisma, depth and feeling to every song, and his band is top notch. Funky and soulful and undoubtedly deserving of a spot on this list. However it was a little slow and not particularly something I could vibe with. Favourite: It Ain't No Fun to Me
Overall a strong album with several highlights. A lot of the deep cuts were solid, even if they are not as popular as the title track. I highly recommend this project if you are looking for some chill 70’s soul. Favorite songs: Let’s Stay Together, La-La for You, So You’re Leaving, Old Time Lovin’, It Ain’t No Fun to Me Least favorite: Judy

The dynamic range here is amazing. This was pre "sound wars" so every instrument gets a lot or room to breath. These songs are truly classics and while this is not my style of music, this album fit's this list perfectly.
Was Al Green a one hit wonder? I couldn’t say with any confidence whether he was or wasn’t, but I couldn’t name any other songs aside from the title track before listening to this. It will be interesting to hear the rest of the album, when the song Let’s Stay Together still gets very frequent radio play. Songs I already knew: Let’s Stay Together Favourites: Let’s Stay Together The album opens with the track we all already know. It’s easy to not realise how well composed Let’s Stay Together is, with its unusual chords and key changes dotted around, as it never sounds harsh when doing so. This, to me, is a marker of a well written song. However, the rest of the album is much less interesting. His voice stays as you would expect, but the composition stays somewhat simple for the other tracks. You can see why they leaned so heavy on the title track. Overall, I did enjoy the album but one song certainly outshines the rest by a wide margin.

Amazing voice. Love the rhythm section - the grooves are so heavy. Great songs I love his performance of The Bee Gees tune.
I love everything about this record. His voice is amazing, al Jackson’s drumming is great, the horns are so tight and the organ is sweet. And the way it’s recorded is just so warm and beautiful. The only critique I could think of is that the lyrics maybe aren’t the most interesting but who cares!! This record vibes like no other
If I had a wedding song, Let’s Stay Together would have been on a short list. He’s voice is so cool. And look at that album cover. Only criticism is I feel like the ends of all of the songs could be a bit more intentional.
