Great opener. Good album. 3.5 stars

Pretty solid 3.5.

While I massively respect Al Green for his influence and contributions to music, I can't say anything about this album jumped out at me. It's a very consistent, solid album, but a lot of the songs end up blending into one another.

I like Al Green

The track Let's Stay Together is great. How Can You Mend a Broken Heart stood out just because I recognized it being a Bee Gee's song. Oh, and seven other smooth soul songs that kind of sound similar to each other. The album is OK for certain situations.

Pretty much all of Al Green’s good material was recorded and released in a span of about 2 years, which is incredible considering the consistent quality of the 5 albums. The thing that most impresses me about Green is his ability to cover songs and make them his own. There’s a Bee Gees cover on this album that I had no idea was a cover. Green’s soulful cover is completely original to the Gibb brothers’ pop-folk original.

I think I’ll like this more the more I listen to it

Nothing to dislike, but nothing too mind-blowing. The opener is a classic, obviously, but the rest is unmemorable pleasant.

Before listening: I certainly don't love all of the genre, that would be insane. Some I hate, but others I just never gave a chance to. Soul is one of these genres. I've never listened to Marvin Gaye or Al Green, but people seem to love them. So I'm gonna give this one a whirl with an open mind, but I really don't expect to like it all that much. After listening: Not exactly my thing, but you know what, this was actually enjoyable. I don't think this is going to awaken anything, but there's a non zero chance I listen to this again.

Blows my mind that someone who sings so smoothly about love has also been involved in abusive behavior towards several women in their life. As for the album, it was pretty decent if not a bit monotonous. I've listened to better soul.

The award for weirdest typography on an album goest to...! great album! feels sooo good! That first track is just forever perfect. I’m never mad about getting something like this to listen to. Beautiful arrangements. The rest of the album kind of blurs together a bit, but it’s a nice blur. 3/5, good time was had!

Solid album with some memorable and passionate moments. He definitely has an amazing voice and carries the vibe masterfully. The album does have a lot of forgettable tracks though in between the more popular hits from the album.

Ik ga aan mijzelf twijfelen. Want nu hoor ik weer en kwalitatief sterke plaat met een ziel. Maar ik geniet er weer niet echt van. Ik stoor me bijvoorbeeld aan het gelal in What Is This Feeling. Maar is dat eigenlijk niet overdreven? Wellicht ben ik de laatste dagen gewoon niet zo in de stemming voor dit soort muziek.

Radiovriendelijke soul aangekleed met wat toeters. Zijn grootste hit is gelijk in het begin al voorbij, waardoor je er ergens wel meteen in zit, maar aan de andere kant heb je ook niks meer om je op te verheugen. De muziek zit prima in elkaar, Al Green kan een prima moppie zingen, het luistert prima weg. Het album is dus prima. We hebben de afgelopen tijd een aantal soulvolle albums gehad en daardoor is het contrast met de vermaledijde postpunk of hiphop minder groot, en nu moet dit album het ineens opnemen tegen zijn gelijken. Curtis Mayfield vond ik beter namelijk. En als ik dan deze week ook nog eens een 5 uitdeel voor jazzy bluesrock, dan komt dit muzikaal allemaal net wat tekort om een 4 te scoren, dat het op een ander moment misschien best had kunnen verdienen. Het is wat het soms is: een momentopname. En het prachtige openingsnummer kan dit album dus niet helemaal redden, want dat nummer was ik alweer bijna vergeten. Te vroeg gepiekt. Sorry Al, je moet het met de vergeetbare 3 sterren doen.

One of the all-time great intros, to an all-time classic slab of soul. The rest of the album is solid, with top class horn section. Excellent weekend easy listening.

Let’s Stay Together with Al’s rich, soulful voice that sounds like it could have been recorded 5 years ago. Holding up real well 50 years later. Smooth and very listenable. (2.9*s)

It's an okay album! I like it more as background music, like if I'm waking up for the day. It has some great beats and instruments, but sadly the songs didn't really click with me. It's the sound balancing, the vocals feel like they're being drowned out and such, I feel I would enjoy them much better if it was a bit tighter in that department.

The opening track Let's Stay Together is a classic for sure. But the album really falls off after that. Maybe because I'm not a huge fan of soul but the rest of the album just feels like more boring spin offs of Let's Stay Together.

I grew up with soul music all about and never really liked it. This is very good soul, Al has a great voice and much skill, the songs are solid - I just would never choose it.

Let’s stay together has to be one of the all-time Greats. The rest is pleasant and accomplished but all a bit too samey-wamey for me.

He’s got a great voice. Let’s Stay Together is a classic. His version of How Can You Mend a Broken Heart is almost my favorite version. It was a little more than a 3 but I wasn’t feeling generous enough to go to a 4.

I've never listened to Al Green before, but I thought this was a pretty good album. Oddly enough, I reviewed Let's Get It On two days ago, so it was a nice coincidence to get another soul album from the same era so soon. I want to make a joke about these two albums being spiritual sequels, but I can't come up with anything clever. Anyway, on to the record at hand: Al Green's singing is easily the star of the show on Let's Stay Together, and his falsetto really sets him apart from other soul singers that were active in the seventies. Even with his falsetto, there's a raw power in his voice, and he easily goes from softer singing to louder singing within the same breath, all while keeping this smooth texture to his voice. The title track is fantastic, and I loved how the horn, rhythm, and string arrangements created such a rich sound. Al's version of "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" was fantastic as well, and his voice really draws you in as the listener, and you can't help but feel that his rendition of this song is autobiographical. Everything else on the album was pretty good; the overall sound is incredibly cohesive, bound together by Al Green's voice and some nice musical arrangements.

Let’s stay together is a classic song, one of the greats. For me personally though this album was another situation of think one song could carry a whole album.

I guess it's good for it's time. The more ballad-y songs were nice, but all in all it's still just "good" to me

Big fan of his first song, Let’s Stay Together. Classic! The rest of his album wasn’t as good of a vibe as the first one in my opinion, but was pretty nice to listen to. I liked the relaxation of it and the music and his voice sounded really nice together.

I was only familiar with "Let's Stay Together", which I really like. The rest of the songs have a good sounds, but none of them hooked me after 2-3 listens.

Imagine house plants hanging from macrame hangers. Silk sheets on a waterbed. Now, if only record players had a way to play that one song over and over again without having to get up and shift the needle back...

An immense pleasure to hear Rev Al Green singing his heart out - such a silky smooth voice - and the orchestrations, especially with organ and horns, give this music a warm, rich, comforting feeling. The title track is of course brilliant but not all the tracks matchup - indeed, there is a sense that Al Green made some incredible singles but never quite delivered an incredible album.

En siltikään voi sanoutua irti nimibiisistä, joka houkuttelee minua ajoittain kuin käärme paratiisissa. Ja vaikka levyllä ei vaikuta olevan mitään muuta yhtä kiistattoman tehokasta, se viihdyttä loppuun saakkaa. Saattaa jopa sisältää muutaman Hyvän Kappaleen.

Al Green had a lovely voice and I was impressed by the fact that he co-wrote Let's Stay Together, which is truly a song for the ages. He doesn't have the voice of someone with a history of beating up women (guys too, but usually he had his heavies do that).

Let’s stay together is of course one of the all-time greatest soul singles and a monster track. He also does a serviceable cover of the Bee Gees’ How can you mend a broken heart. The remainder of the album is pretty generic soul though, and did not resonate as much for me.

Nothing that stood out, pleasant to listen to.

I've never really listened to soul music much; nor have I actively avoided it. It's interesting that this comes following the 2pac album from Monday because the (very brief) bits of that I could have enjoyed, if it wasn't all so awful, had some of the same vibe this album has permeating the whole thing; although this isn't so much in a different league as on a different planet! I'm listening to most of these whilst working and this is a great album to do that to. His voice is amazing, the music is spot on, the production is so crisp. The conclusion is that I loved listening to this and it's probably the first thing on here that I wouldn't have chosen to listen to but may well revisit in the future, and the possibility of that is exactly why I started doing this in the first place!

I feel like this album was mostly just included for the title track, which is fair - it’s a great song. The rest of it didn’t really move the needle for me.

You can vibe to it, I really like the trumpets, it’s good background music, but I wouldn’t listen to it normally. Judy is a very cute and chill song. It’s my favourite song of the album.

The title track is great. After that nothing was very memorable but I liked the brass instruments and its not like Al couldn't sing. It was OK overall I guess. Probably only ever going to listen to the title track again I the future though.

Super groovy, it was great as background music while working - and I mean that as a compliment. I made the mistake of reading Al Green’s Wikipedia though. Is there a way to opt out of being recommended people with a history of domestic violence (or similar) allegations? Should I avoid Googling until afterwards, because it ruined listening to the second half of the album lol.

Was Al Green a one hit wonder? I couldn’t say with any confidence whether he was or wasn’t, but I couldn’t name any other songs aside from the title track before listening to this. It will be interesting to hear the rest of the album, when the song Let’s Stay Together still gets very frequent radio play. Songs I already knew: Let’s Stay Together Favourites: Let’s Stay Together The album opens with the track we all already know. It’s easy to not realise how well composed Let’s Stay Together is, with its unusual chords and key changes dotted around, as it never sounds harsh when doing so. This, to me, is a marker of a well written song. However, the rest of the album is much less interesting. His voice stays as you would expect, but the composition stays somewhat simple for the other tracks. You can see why they leaned so heavy on the title track. Overall, I did enjoy the album but one song certainly outshines the rest by a wide margin.

Pretty okay album. I love the soulful and expressive vocals from Green. My main issue is with the mixing. Everything is so understated to the point that it all blends together and feels too mushy. Also, I didn’t like how every song just faded out really quickly. Might listen again if I have to.

Al Green’s pure vision of love always inspires me. He’s just so damn wholesome, never running around playing, but seeking the natural end of love: to give himself completely to one woman for life. I love the touches of his sweet, sexy falsetto. Also this album has one of the best covers of any song ever: Green’s rendition of the Gibb brothers’ “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?” I believe him when he sings.

This is perfectly good music. It's just not anything I'd listen to all that often... BTW - I had no idea Al Green was still alive.

Although I knew of "Let's Stay Together" before, I can't ignore the influence that the Pulp Fiction soundtrack added to my late teens. Yup 90s nostalgia of a 70s tune! No other standout tracks on the rest of the album, but still enjoyable contemplative easy listening.

I'm not the biggest Soul/R&B-fan, but this is quite nice. Standout: How Can You Mend A Broken Heart. 3/5

I had never heard this whole thing before and was a little bit disappointed. Title track is incredible of course, but there weren't any other great ones. Nothing bad either, fine to have in the background, but probably not something I'd return to.

This is the kind of stuff that if I hear one song in a movie soundtrack I go - that sounds great. A whole album of it doesn't work as well.

Let's Stay Together starts with a humdinger of a title track and then just cruises through soft, soulful pop, a genre you can listen to for ages without ever getting tired or bored of it. Not an example of best in class but a 3/5 floor for sure, doesn't rise much above it but will never let you down.

Fine, but a bit dull. Gentle, smooth listening with a bit of soul, a couple of stand out songs that elevate it to a 3, but mostly background music really.

The title track was the only familiar song for me from this album. It was good to hear a full album from Al Green. "I've Never Found a Girl (Who Loves Me Like You Do)” and "La-La for You” grabbed my attention. Overall the album was okay.

Nice. Obviously *Pulp Fiction* has done a great job getting audiences acquainted with the 70s soul gem that gives this album its title. And I can't say the rest of the record was an unpleasant listen (half of those tracks are nicely done, there's no arguing about that). On the other hand, I'm a bit skeptical whether this album as a whole can be classified as an "essential listen", especially compared with masterworks from Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding or Stevie Wonder. Maybe this was a bad day for me to dive into a soul album, but frankly, I'm not sure what separates those tracks from Barry White stuff sometimes (apart from their diametrically opposed voices, that goes without saying). I leave this as a question mark here. Maybe with a little more time on my hands, I'll get more attuned to the subtleties of this album, who knows? Number of essential listens : more than a third so far, I've temporarily lost count here... Cet album n'avait aucun intérêt particulier, si ce n'est de confirmer la théorie selon laquelle pochette ignoble = mauvais album. Le seul album dérogeant à cette règle étant bien évidemment le superbe Comme une étoile de Gilbert Montagné.

Such a smooth voice, and yet seemingly such a cunt. Anyway, as a fan of rap, i separate the music from the person. This one is a bit too smooth.

Thought I was going to absolutely love this one because "Let's Stay Together" (the song) is one of my all-time faves. But that was really the only standout song on the album for me. The other songs were just meh. Giving this one a 3 purely due to that song.
