21 is an album that leans heavily on emotional directness, and for the most part it works, but not without wearing thin. Adele’s voice is undeniably powerful and expressive, and when she lets it carry quieter moments, there is real intimacy and ache. The heartbreak at the centre of the record feels genuine, and that sincerity is what gives the album its initial impact. Where it starts to lose me is in how relentlessly it pushes that emotion. Song after song circles the same themes with very little tonal shift, and the big, belting moments begin to blur together. The production often amplifies this, swelling everything toward drama rather than allowing space or subtlety to develop. Instead of deepening the feeling, the album sometimes feels like it is repeating itself at a higher volume. In the end, 21 feels like a snapshot of a very specific emotional moment rather than a fully varied album experience. There are standout tracks that deserve their acclaim, but taken as a whole it can feel heavy in a way that limits repeat listens. I respect its honesty and understand its massive appeal, but it does not quite hold me all the way through.

Always impressed with her talent. A couple of great tracks on here that are less main stream.

The production is rightly designed to let the music take a backseat to the vocals, but it leaves the whole thing feeling a little soulless to me — like expensive karaoke. I found it a little exhausting to listen to at first because I felt like she was singing everything at a nonstop 10/10. I did start to enjoy it more as it progressed and found “I’ll Be Waiting” to be the most enjoyable track. She’s got a supreme talent but it’s not my thing.

This album reminds me of angry old women arguing with each other during the Christmas rush at Jo-Ann Fabrics back in 2011. I was a receiving manager there at the time, and I vividly remember the chaotic packed stores, frustrated customers, and Adele playing nonstop over the speakers. That association is so burned into my memory that I can’t hear this album without being transported straight back to that exact environment.

First Listen; 4; While this was first listen to the album, I'd obviously heard these singles before. I expected to think that the album was good enough, but not for me, but I actually really enjoyed it. These songs are just so good and have a timeless quality. Favorite Track: Someone Like You

I had never listened to Adele's “21” in its entirety before. While her voice is known to be outstanding, I had previously been of the opinion that this did not apply to her songwriting. Listening to the album confirmed this impression: “21” contains 2-4 really strong songs and a whole lot of filler material. At least this gives me the opportunity to highlight a few songs. Here we go: In my opinion, “Rolling in the Deep” is already the best song on the album—Aretha always started her albums this way, so Adele is in good company here. Next, I like the rhythmically accentuated “He Won't Go”—especially after the rather monotonous songs that precede it. Adele's voice also comes into its own on “I'll Be Waiting” and “Someone Like You.” All in all, a pretty good second album from an up-and-coming artist at the time—but with some room for improvement. Too bad she didn't make it beyond that until today!

Nous y voilà, nous sommes en 2011, l'année où la planète entière a décidé, d'un commun accord tacite et terrifiant, de se rouler en boule pour pleurer sur les ruptures amoureuses d'une jeune Londonienne. Le livre "1001 Albums" nous vend ça comme un chef-d'œuvre de la soul moderne, un truc incontournable. Alors, en bon soldat de ce projet insensé, j'ai appuyé sur play. Et bordel, l'ouverture m'a presque eu. "Rolling in the Deep", c'est une claque, c'est l'ouverture qui te fait relever la tête de ton café noir sans sucre. Il y a ce rythme martial, ce "stomp" bluesy qui écrase le sol, cette voix qui attaque sans prévenir, chargée d'une hargne qui semble sincère. Pendant trois minutes et quarante-huit secondes, j'y ai cru. Vraiment. Je me suis dit : "Tiens, la petite anglaise a de la bile à revendre." Ça grogne, ça monte, c'est produit avec une efficacité redoutable. C'est puissant. Si l'album avait été onze variations de cette colère sourde et rythmique, on aurait peut-être tenu là quelque chose qui aurait pu s'intercaler, non sans mal mais avec dignité, entre un PJ Harvey et un vieux Etta James dans ma discothèque mentale. C'est ce morceau qui sauve les meubles. C'est lui qui arrache ce 2 sur 5 à mes doigts réticents. Parce que techniquement, c'est une bombe pop bien foutue. Mais c'est là que le piège se referme. C'est l'appât. Tu mords à l'hameçon du "Deep", et tu te retrouves tiré hors de l'eau pour agoniser sur le pont du bateau pendant les dix pistes suivantes. Passé ce premier titre, l'album s'effondre comme un soufflé raté sortie du four. On quitte le rade de blues fumeux pour entrer directement dans le salon beige d'un pavillon de banlieue témoin. Et c'est là que mon passé de disquaire indé se réveille et hurle. Parce que "21", passé l'intro, c'est le triomphe du calibrage. C'est de la musique conçue, pesée et emballée pour la fameuse "ménagère de moins de 50 ans" – et je déteste utiliser ce terme marketing réducteur, mais bon sang, cet album en est la définition clinique. On tombe dans une mièvrerie abyssale. "Someone Like You", "Set Fire to the Rain"... Les titres s'enchaînent et je sens mon âme de fan de post-punk se dessécher. C'est propre, c'est même terrifiant de propreté. Même quand elle pleure, même quand elle hurle sa douleur, tout est nickel, pas un cheveu qui dépasse, pas une fausse note, pas un larsen, pas une aspérité. C'est de la musique d'ameublement émotionnel, c'est fait pour remplir le vide entre deux publicités à la télé. C'est fait pour être écouté en fond sonore en buvant un thé tiède en regardant la pluie tomber, mais sans jamais se mouiller. Et parlons-en, de cette voix car on nous rebat les oreilles avec la "puissance" d'Adele. Oui, elle a du coffre. Bravo. Elle pourrait probablement souffler les bougies de son gâteau d'anniversaire depuis la pièce d'à côté. Mais depuis quand la puissance est-elle synonyme d'émotion ? Dans le monde du Post-Rock ou de la Cold Wave, on a appris que parfois, un murmure désaccordé, une voix brisée, un souffle court en disent mille fois plus qu'une performance d'athlète olympique de la glotte. Sur "21", Adele ne chante pas, elle performe. C'est une succession d'exercices de style vocalisesques qui finissent par m'anesthésier le cerveau. Ça gueule, ça monte, ça descend, ça fait des loopings, mais ça ne me touche pas. C'est techniquement irréprochable, et c'est bien là le problème. L'imperfection, c'est l'humanité. Cet album est un cyborg, un T-800 de la pop triste venu du futur pour exterminer toute forme de subtilité musicale. Rick Rubin est crédité à la production sur certains titres. Le même Rick Rubin qui a transformé les dernières années de Johnny Cash en testament sonore bouleversant avec les "American Recordings". Qu'est-ce qu'il a foutu ici ? Il a probablement encaissé le chèque (et grand bien lui fasse), mais on ne retrouve aucune de la fragilité brute qu'il sait d'habitude capturer. Tout est lissé, compressé, prêt pour la bande FM et les télé-crochets. Je me revois au magasin, entre 96 et 2000. Si un truc comme ça était sorti à l'époque (bon, on avait Céline Dion, c'était pas mieux), je l'aurais planqué derrière le comptoir. J'aurais mis un point d'honneur à diriger le client vers un "Dummy" de Portishead s'il voulait de l'émotion, ou vers un Cocteau Twins s'il voulait une voix féminine venue d'ailleurs. Mais "21", putain "21" c'est l'anti-découverte. C'est la musique qui vient à toi sans que tu l'aies demandée, elle est partout, elle s'impose. Alors, on fait quoi ? Ben on met 2/5. Un point pour "Rolling in the Deep", parce qu'il faut rendre à César ce qui est à César : c'est un tube, un vrai. Et un deuxième point pour la technicité de l'ensemble, car on ne peut pas dire que c'est mal fait. C'est même trop bien fait, c'est le produit parfait de l'industrie musicale des années 2010. Mais pour le reste... Pour la mièvrerie ambiante, pour les ballades sirupeuses qui donnent le diabète auditif, pour cette sensation d'écouter un produit marketing plutôt qu'une œuvre d'art : c'est non.

This album took me back to my 20s - a time full of vigor, seesaw emotions and uncertainties. (Add to vinyl collection) Adele's voice... 🥹🥹🥹 A lyrical masterpiece.

Nothing transports me to 2010 Barnes & Noble like this album. There I am, browsing the New Non-Fiction section, while ‘Someone Like You’ plays at a reasonable volume for what feels like the 10,000th time that week. But Adele is more than her outrageous commercial appeal and brand partnerships, at least some of the time. 'Rolling in the Deep' is a stone cold classic. She sounds great. It moves. The feeling and sincerity is explosive. And it's got a great pre-chorus (the best of all song structure elements). Unfortunately, the rest of this album mostly persists as a firehose of unearned emotion and the cleanest melodrama you've ever heard. Adele's titanic voice is worthy of more creative risk than this album provides.

I played this album on a loop for 12 hours once after breaking up with my long-time partner. This was the first time in 10 years I’ve heard this album. It still holds up. Adele is just one of those vocalists that can tell your whole life story in a single note.

I feel weird for writing a lot about Adele here since I’m not even a particularly huge Adele fan, especially compared to others I know, but I find her so fascinating as a musical figure for how she came about and what she represented at a very specific time. (Full disclosure: I’m American so I’ll be talking about that perspective. I don’t know what would’ve changed if “Chasing Pavements” was a bigger hit here.) Picture this: it’s 2011. The Hot 100 is dominated by uptempo, largely dance-oriented songs by women like Britney, Katy, Gaga, and Rihanna. “Rolling in the Deep” came out as a single the fall before, but climbed slowly up the charts until it hit #1 early in the summer like a load of bricks. It wasn’t in a totally separate universe from other dance-pop songs on the radio at the time: it’s got a *very* stomping 4/4 beat and a percussive backing vocal that if you squint recalls disco while not really sounding like anything else. But this was a classic, classic R&B song, not super unlike what Amy Winehouse had done with Back to Black but bigger than ever before. (Worth noting too that sadly Amy left us shortly after this song took off in the US.) All of this while she was signed to XL! XL!! I’m a big fan of most of what XL Recordings has ever put out so I’m biased here, but Adele’s inclusion on that roster is lightly insane if you think about it for more than .02 seconds. Imagine if songs by their other R&B-referencing artists like The xx’s “Islands” or Jai Paul’s “BTSTU” took off like wildfire in the US. The mind boggles! All the same, Adele took off, and followed up that song’s success with “Someone Like You”, which really, really did not sound like anything else on the charts at that time. For me, it’s hard not to draw parallels between her and Mariah Carey, whose huge success in the 90s was at least in part a reaction to the exposure of ‘fake’ singers like Milli Vanilli. But Adele didn’t change much in the broader musical landscape: neither throwback R&B nor piano ballads came to dominate the charts, maybe because there were already other belters like Gaga who were just working in a different style, maybe because Americans in that era just wanted to fantasize about being in the club more than anything else. Who knows what happened, but Adele herself continued to thrive in her own lane for years and years to come. So what of the album itself, then? For its history listed above, I think it’s totally unique, especially as far as 2010s records go. Aside from Adele’s classic soul voice, it stands out for some uniquely piano-heavy arrangements, and I honestly kind of love how hollow the drums the sound on a lot of the more uptempo numbers (especially "Rumour Has It”. What is going on with that snare!!) But due to overexposure and the fact that I was 17 when this album came out, so many of these songs feel embedded in my DNA in a very specific way. I will fist pump every time during the second chorus of “Rolling in the Deep”. I’ll lift a lighter, or at least a phone flashlight, up for “Set Fire to the Rain”. And I’ll always shed a tear for “Someone Like You”. I think this album represents a very specific artist who could’ve really only hit once in a very specific era, and I don’t miss that era necessarily, but I’ll always smile along and wave my hands up in the air every time I hear the record.

It's difficult to overstate the massive splash this album had on the musical world. Adele is a talent often imitated but never duplicated. People who say that she's overrated are kidding themselves and absolutely try to sing along in their cars before quitting mid-note in shame.

Incredible album defo will listen again just wish this was my first time hearing the singles as knowing them so well took me out of it a bit.

🗣️💥 1,000 QUEER SHEEP, NEVER HAD BARE FEET 🎶🎤 My biggest personal gripe with this album has always been the instrumentation. It's so pared down, simple, hollow. Like a bunch of pre-recorded backing tracks for her to sing karaoke songs over (albeit extremely well). Yes it lets her voice shine and sure, some of these songs are meant to be piano ballad anthems, but damn if they'd produced some of these songs with a bigger, broader, fuller, more daring sound, some of these mid-tier 'filler' songs like Turning Tables / Do You Remember / He Won't Go coulda been willldddd. I'll Be Waiting / One And Only got the closest but still seemed to be lacking pizzazz. Give me more pocketed drumming, a less linear bass line, bigger horns/organ, give the bridges more sauce, I'm left begging for more out of these. Her voice is undeniable.

Much better than I was expecting. I was only familiar with hits which are good songs but the rest of the album is just as good. Fantastic production and she has a great voice.

Singing is emotional and the louder you do it, the more emotional it is.

"Rolling in the Deep" is a legitimately great pop single, but "Rumour Has It" is the disco blues stomp jam that made my jaded ear open up to her. The rest of this leans into the greeting card balladry she's great at, but doesn't do it for me. I only want to hear "Someone Like You" again sung by a girl in a bridesmaid dress at a talent show (or even better, a boy in a bridesmaid dress), and I don't really want to go to a talent show, so...

I like songs like “Rolling in the Deep” and “Rumor Has It,” which marry Adele’s vocal talents to contemporary sounds and veer a little closer to an Amy Winehouse sense of darkness and mischief, and “Take It All,” which is soulful and strips away everything but a piano and some background choir accents. But then the middle goes soft and bombastic, in part because the material weakens. “Don’t You Remember” is overwrought and overproduced, and in general I start to feel a sense of being trapped in a Lifetime movie about a young woman unlucky in love.

Like an Amy Winehouse you can play for grandma. Good singles and I dont hate it, but unlikely to seek her songs out.

A good modern pop album, containing some of Adele's biggest hits. She demonstrates her exceptional voice here. I have to admit I'm sick of Someone Like You, which is not a bad song, but it's overplayed. Rolling In The Deep definetly deserves the hype. My favourite songs that I didn't previously know were One And Only and Lovesong.

I’ll be Waiting has a bit of a 60’s soul vibe. Clearly has a strong and quite soulful voice. Overall not bad but not going in my collection! 3.5

Take an incredible voice, write very samey songs for that voice, overproduce every song to the max, and sell the album to the masses. Her voice is truly powerful and beautiful but I didn't like this album very much. The hits songs are way too overplayed and the rest of them are slow ballads that sound the same. It's crazy this is the best selling album in the US ever and one of the best selling albums of all times. I could name hundreds of albums that should have reached this popularity but it didn't happen.

I've heard this before and my recollection was that a couple of the singles were good but it was hampered by too many slow and repetitive ballads. Actually there are fewer skips than I remember and I was quite enjoying this and thought about giving it a 4, but I've docked it too a 3 because the last track was the overplayed Someone Like You.

Rolling in the Deep and Set Fire to the Rain are killer. Adele is just a force. The voice is so rich and beautiful and powerful. But overall, I felt like a lot of the other songs were just okay. Adele is the kind of artist I just want the greatest hits from.

Expected to hate it. Her voice brought me over and Someone Like You is an all time classic. Still not my thing, though, but it's hard to argue that this is bad.

The tracks from this album are so overplayed in so many venues and media that I have almost an allergic reaction to hearing them. This album was so successful in it's time the entire planet probably has heard at least 4 of the songs on it. I don't personally think that qualifies for being on the 1001 list but it's probably just my bias. Of all of the tracks I really like 'Rumour Has it' the most because it is the only song that seems to really dare to get a little strange. The hook in 'Rolling In The Deep' is good too with the kind of BeeGees backup singing. I cringe a little at the unmuffled bass drum stomp clap because it veers into the 'stomp,clap,hey' genre of that era. I don't think I'm an Adele hater. She's a real talent and I think her Skyfall theme is one of the best Bond themes, up there with the Shirley Bassey ones.

This is her best album by a comfortable margin. At the time this made such a splash and brought back british soul in a big way, but this is blended at times with some stomp-clap 2000s country energy that I forgot was there. Her voice is impressive but also all there is to it as the instrumntaiton is pretty lackluster and boring. Because it;s so voice forward it sounds quite busy vocally. There is something about dynamics missing here. It's fine, I actually know all these songs immdiately, but leaves me a bit meh not feeling much

Adele has a wonderful voice, but her songs tend to be rather samey. However, I don't think one could plausibly make a case to not include her on a list like this. I think two albums is too much and if you have to choose one, this is the one. Compared to 25, 21 is a lot more varied and has her biggest hits.

I love this album. I haven’t listened to it in years, maybe because my taste in music changed or because I listened to it too many times when I was younger. But after years, I found I still loved it. It’s an album I won’t ever be able to separate from the memory of listening to it when I was young. There was one holiday when this was the only album we could agree on as a family and so it played constantly. Now when I listen to it I can instantly picture the most beautiful coastal drive. To actually talk about the music, I think her voice is gorgeous and the songs are so full of emotion. A real struggle to pick a favourite and least favourite as I enjoyed every song. For some reason I think I will continue to not reach for this album - maybe I simply don’t want to erase the image of that one holiday by listening to it somewhere mundane. Fav song: Take It All (but this changes from moment to moment) Least fav: Lovesong

It's 2011, I'm 9 years old and on holiday. We're driving back to where we've been staying along winding costal roads after a long day of swimming and sightseeing and eating. My sisters iPod touch has the middle seat in the back of the rental card with two sets of headphones plugged into it and Adele's 21 plays on repeat, just as it did on the flight there and will on the flight home. Fourteen years later I still remember every word of the album- I also remember how travel sick I got on that journey. Favourite song: Rumour Has It (Or almost any of the songs dependent on the day) Least: One and Only

So funny to finally realize that Adele released a shit ton of bangers in a single album, but since they're all hit tracks that took everyone by storm, I assumed they were singles that released at different times. Just amazing.

The first three tracks had a good drive and a nice spiritual vibe. It then got very beige. The Cure cover was criminal and robbed a great song of its musical and emotional depth. Automatic deduction of one star.

Fucking ‘love song’?! She obviously has a great voice, but some light and shade wouldn’t go amiss. Every other line seems to be over sung or have some kind of vocal affectation added unnecessarily. Was interested to hear some more of the album cuts but they are bland as anything. I get it, she found her niche, but please, for god sake, mix up the lyrical topics just a bit.

I remembers how cool this was when it came out! It’s (in my opinion) her best, a pop album that really showed us what pop music could potentially be. It was such a breath of fresh air in 2011. The hits are good, of course, but the rest is solid too.

I got this album when it came out! Still really, really good - her voice feels so lived-in and full of hurt. It's insane that she was just 21. Love Rolling In The Deep, Rumor Has It, and Someone Like You.

Ohhhh I don’t know. There was a moment in my life when seeing Adele belt some of these out at Wembley felt fantastic. Admittedly, the two songs that most moved me that night were from 19 (a record that came out 17 years ago to the day) … but still; you’d struggle to find a live performer with more arena-appropriate songs than Adele, and at least four of those are on this record. Ohhhh I don’t know. It’s just that this collection of vignettes on unrequited love leaves me cold. It feels like an album that was created with world domination in mind and achieved it. And maybe then it’s the case that 25 is the sound of Adele weaping for she had no more worlds left to conquer. It might be that. It’s probably not, though. It’s probably just quite boring.

I simply missed Adele, ie knew who she was and had an idea of her style but never took the time to listen to anything. Having now heard 21, there’s definitely stuff to like here. I like that she’s a songwriter (or part of a songwriting team) for her own material. I like the authentic blues vocal inflections, which suggests she’s a student of that kind of music. I get some vibes of ‘Dusty in Memphis’ Dusty Springfield. Also some Elton John. And I’m generally a big fan of female vocalists as well, especially when they sing their own songs. My problem here is it’s ultimately a bit poppy for my taste. A lot of the songs start out bluesy and I find myself wanting her to double down on the stripped back bluesy feel - but instead she always heads off in the direction of pop, in the power ballad style. These are production choices and no doubt it reflects her own tastes too. But I can’t help wishing she had a hip producer like Amy Winehouse did with Mark Ronson. Her voice and her general vibe is great. I just don’t enjoy the finished product all that much.

I'd heard tracks from the album before but never listened to the whole album end to end. In some ways I think that spoiled it for me a little. There's no doubt that Adele has a great voice and she definitely shows it on these tracks. However, I felt that the tracks at the start of the album were a bit 'samey' to me. When the music is mostly about her voice then it seemed that the same style was used on multiple tracks. Listened to individually as I'd normally hear them this wasn't really obvious. Compare that to the end of the album where on One and Only (my favourite), Lovesong and Someone Like You she showed her wide vocal range and differing singing styles. Not sure I'll listen to the whole album again at one sitting, but I will still enjoy her songs on their own.

A couple of these songs carry some power. Mostly middle of the road pop.

Not my type of music

Amazing vocals obviously, production compliments Adele well and allows her to be the star of the album the whole way through. Powerful start to the Album with the first 2 tracks, strong ending too. Rumor Has It is the standout for me, so many layers sonically that all come together beautifully, great energy, love Adele’s shit talking on the song. Definitely some songs I will come back to, but I’m not sure there is enough sauce outside of Adele’s stellar vocal performance to bring me back to the album as a whole too often.

Once again I was fooled to believe snobbery had made me miss out on something amazing by a strong opening. I was reminded ”Rolling in the deep” is a truly great song. But I can’t stand ”set fire on the rain”. And the bulk of this leave me cold. Blue eyed soul or any soul or other music genre for that matter need more than heartbreak. I miss the sensuality and joy of Dusty Springfield or the attitude and rawness of Amy Winehouse.

I just love it. It‘s a classic. Although I listened to all of the songs back then I can’t remember listening to the full album in one sitting. I just did and it’s a great listen from beginning to end. Gotta admit it’s also right up my alley. But nevertheless, Adele is an icon.

Love the mixing on the album vocal forward with just the basics behind it

For being one of the most streamed albums of all time I have to say Adele's 21 is still an extremely impressive Pop Soul release that stands the test of time even for it being an early 2010s release. White moms were truly eating good with this album's release. I forgot just how powerful Adele's vocals are when she isn't being played on the radio over and over and over again for 3 years straight. She really was a powerhouse even at such a young age and had quite the killer pen game to back it up. I remember so many of these songs from my childhood and having my mother religiously play this album in her own time and whenever she turned on the radio. To say this defined the 2010s for some time would be an understatement as it was truly inescapable for years until 25 released, and then that project couldn't be escaped either. It is a staple of the time it was released and still passes off pretty well into the modern day. Glad this is better than I remember it being because god damn did Adele hit it out of the park on this album.

Jag förstår inte vad ni andra hittar i den rösten och sånguttrycket. Det är fruktansvärt! Singeln "Set fire to the rain" är direkt hälsovådlig att lyssna på, enbart pga sången. Musiken här är om möjligt ännu mer förutsägbar och generisk än den andra plattan vi hade, där fanns i alla fall en produktion som stack ut lite grann. Den här skivan hade inte funkat som indtrumental. "He won't go" har nåt annorlunda, även om den inte är bra och fanskapet försöker fortfarande sjunga, så fimns där en ansats mot nåt annat och bättre. Resten skickar vi direkt till slutförvaring i Forsmark.

Adele innan utslätad storproduktion fullständigt förgör henne på kommande album. Här finns lite av soul-stuket, som i inledande Rolling inte deep och I’ll be waiting. Visst fastnar hon i några för många ballader, men de är inte så ändlöst svulstiga som på nästa album. En trea i det svagare registret.

Tyckte rätt bra om detta album när det kom (till skillnad från uppföljaren som redan avhandlats). Var dock ett tag sedan senaste lyssningen. Helt klart så att vissa låtar åldrats bättre än andra. I sina bästa stunder gör hon fullt funktionsduglig soul. Som i Turninh tables, I’ll be wating och finfina One and only. Cure-covers funkar också bra. I andra låtar anas alltför tydligt den slätstrukna mainstreampop som kommit att bli Adeles signum.

Betydligt bättre än 25. Upptempolåtarna går att lyssna på men melloballader som Turning tables är jag helst utan. Andra halvan klart starkare med spår som I’ll be waiting, He won’t go och One and only.

One of the best pop albums of the last few decades, if not ever. Melancholic, dramatic, and beautiful. Adele's an amazing singer, but that's not what makes this album, there are a lot of great pop singers. Its the quality of the songwriting, the on-point production, and the cohesiveness of the project that sets it apart. I'm confident in saying this will be remembered as a classic of the 2010s. PS: Shout out to the Dido-esque Cure cover near the end. I had no idea that existed, but it was very well done.

The faster songs are decent but overplayed now, which isn't her fault. The slow songs are brutal. Obvious talent. 3 stars which feels a but harsh but this type of album just doesn't do anything for me.

This is a pretty incredible album. I've never really been a big Adele fan in the sense that I've never purposefully listed to any her albums. I've heard plenty of the songs through radio or pop culture, but this was my first time sitting down and actually giving it a listen. The song writing is wonderful, each composition is unique, the album moves from pop-y danc-y vibes to slow piano ballads. Her voice and range are amazing and the R&B raspy-ness of her voice is special. I didn't imagine I would give this five stars, but it is a great album.

Good album, but not my vibe

The strongest part of this album is the singing. There is no doubt that Adele’s voice carried the hell outta this album. It is well produced but sounds like something you’d hear walking around a shopping centre. The songwriting and instrumentation is quite safe and doesn’t really inspire me. As far as mainstream pop music goes, it’s amazing, but most of these songs are boring and shallow. I wouldn’t complain if I heard this in the background, in fact, I wouldn’t notice.

Just about what I expected. I don't find her music to be all that interesting. She's obviously a very talented singer but even the belting can be a bit grating to my ears at times.

Hey, it's the best selling UK album of the century but Curator changed his mind, you can skip it #derp And while she's the also the best-selling UK artist of the century, Curator has none of her records on the list #derp I have admittedly snob tastes and I'm not putting this in heavy rotation, but one of the purposes of music is doing what this does for the, what, hundreds of millions? people that it works for. Dismissing this while holding on to your fifth Leonard Cohen record is the "sportsball" of music POVs.

Adele is amazing. I couldn't appreciate this album, I was too busy being an idiot 16 year old.

Really solid radio-friendly soul album. It's not exactly my cup of tea, many of the big hits didn't hit nearly as hard for me as when I was younger, but I was pleasantly surprised by some of the B-sides ~ especially "One and Only" Great, but I'd rather listen to someone else when I'm in the mood for soul. Though I'll definitely return to some of these songs.

Despite really liking, 'someone like you', the rest of the album is a bit humdrum. But with that said, it is an impressive feat to put together an album like this at a young age.

Mid album barely redeemed by a great voice. Not much here beyond the notes that bookend it and the fact that no one on her camp talked her out of releasing the terrible Lovesong cover points to the hubris on display.

Adele’s voice is very good, it’s just the songs are not for me, and that might be an understatement. This is music for jilted white women. I don’t have anything negative to say about the album, I just couldn’t connect with it. It’s a 3/5 just on the strength of her voice alone.

Wow, she can really sing! Don't like the music much, but she gets a solid three for her voice.

Adele is one of the most successful artists of the 21st Century, and yet listening to her albums one can't help but wonder why that's the case. She has an impressive voice (though not one I personally care for) but her music is pretty middle of the road stuff; fairly forgettable if not competently put together.

Definitely liked this more than 25. God damn, this girl can sing. And BTW, all of this music came from someone who just learned how to drink alcohol. What the fuck. But, it's still pop. And I still despise it. And listen, maybe if these songs weren't played 6 billion times on the radio and in movies and in reels and in fucking Old Navy, maybe I'd like them more. But actually, maybe not. Because that exact flavor that allows these songs to be so damn popular is what makes them taste so, so bland to me. That being said, I seriously liked a couple here. great breakup album with the exact right flow of anger, sadness, melancholy and new hope at the end.

I understand that Adele has a powerful voice, but her music is simply not for me. I don't know why, but whenever I hear it, it really makes me angry.

101/1089 Rolling in the Deep kinda one of the best pop singles ever released, and an incredible album opener Rumour Has It is a lot of fun and has a great bridge, Turning Tables is a solid track too. Set Fire To The Rain is a generational pop song, god tier The way One and Only develops towards the end is quite beautiful and a standout moment Someone Like You speaks for itself. This is such a strong project. I think the singles do stand out fairly high above the others but the deep cuts hold up 71/100

Great album. Starts off incredibly strong with Rolling in the Deep. Between that, Someone like you and set fire to the rain- the singles on here are insane. Lovesong was a sleeper hit I’m surprised isn’t more popular. Rating this 3.5 but I’ll round up.

Maybe it’s unfair to pigeonhole an artist like this, but I think she should stick to the torch songs. The more uptempo and poppy songs don’t feel natural. The whole thing is a bit awkward, which makes sense in light of her age.

Listen, Adele has a powerhouse voice. I understand and empathize with how a particularly brutal breakup inspired this album. But holy hell is it repetitious. "Rolling in the Deep," "Rumour Has It," and "Someone Like You" are great, but I was so ready for her to sing about something, anything else. The cover of the Cure's "Lovesong" is solid, though.

She has a beautiful voice and the topics she deep, meaningful and mature. Thinking about how she was only 21 at the time seems so impressive that she had had these experiences and so eloquently can describe the pain.

Adele brings the drama. It's pretty good pianowork and I like her soulful, strong voice. Favorites: Rolling in the Deep, Rumour Has It, Fire to the Rain, I'll be Waiting, and One and Only has a really nice old skool R&B feel. I didn't especially like her version of the Cure's Lovesong. I appreciate that she made it her own but it drags. Unfortunately the rest of the songs on the album feel kinda meh to me. Leaving me somewhere between a 3 and a 4 but "I'll Be Waiting" is probably my FAVORITE Adele song. Such great energy and love the horns in that one. So okay fine Adele. Take my four and all of it's heartache.

Ok, I surrender Adele. Your drama used to annoy me, but you've managed to convert me in this project. Your throaty vocals have a life of their own, and your music seeps with emotion in all its catchiness. Really hard not to get wrapped up in it all. This album was really great from start to finish.

A couple of great songs, beautiful voice but nothing spectacular for me.

Ok so another album that’s not actually on the 1001 list - it's on the ex-list. The expunged list. Removed because the author maybe saw the error of his ways and realised that this is not great, it's just overplayed. I’m already bored and I’ve not even put the album on yet. Just looking at the titles makes me think oh no not THAT song again. And there are a lot of them. It's an album my mother would love - because she’s got dementia and doesn’t even remember my name. So all these songs are forever new to her. For the rest of us it's a bit tiresome. But is suppose credit where credit’s due, to churn out an album of quality songs at 21 is impressive. It’s not her fault they were played to death in every shop and on every radio station. Best songs are Turning Tables and I'll Be Waiting. Worst are everything else that's been overplayed. But worst of the worst is a horrible version of The Cure's Love Song.

Heard it before. I think I've heard the big hits from this album too many times and they annoy me just a bit but because of nostalgia I still like the album quite a bit. Definitely Adele's best album 3/5

Adele’s 21 is the sonic equivalent of beige wallpaper: overwrought vocals, lifeless production, and faux soul for people who think volume equals emotion. Perfect for tearful latte drinkers; unbearable for anyone craving music with actual pulse or surprise.

Adele has a great singing voice, the production on this album is great, but i feel like the music in this album is the kind of music you would hear in a department store, or in a commercial. This is not to say its bad music. Only that this is what i associate this music with, personally. Kudos to anyone who is moved by Adele's music, and many songs on here are catchy, but I'm not sure if i would return to this album. (Whats 9 + 10 ?)

Maintenant mature et désintoxiqué, je vois l'album d'un autre oeil. Bon, j'ai toujours des ptsd en entendant Rolling in the Deep et Someone Like You, mais le reste est vraiment bon, je me suis suis même surpris à bopper ma tête sur Rumour Has It. Donc, belle surprise, à revisiter dans 10 ans

Lovely album, groundbreaking. Too popular for its own good unfortunately, gives it 4.5 stars rounded down to 4. Really enjoyed the full album listen though - Sadly, overplayed. Awesome music, but going to be tough to appreciate. MJ level of popular though, I never realized these were all the same album!

Ohhh I want to like it. She's got a great voice, and there is so much to it. But I feel like - probably because of her success and overplay - that I felt pretty bored by it. The songs stick in your head. But yeah, underwhelming.

Maybe the most that one song has dominated an album. Extraordinary the difference in quality. The other hits are hits. But the rest of the album sounds like an Adele parody (she really does worry about people forgetting who she is). I'll Be Waiting is all a bit uncomfortable lyrically too. Would love to know how much Robert Smith made from this.

Decent pop, but you've heard it so many times on the radio that it doesn't really spark anything in you any more.

To my ears it has been played to death on the radio and the b-sides are not that different from the many hits on this. Does that make it bad? No. The arrangements and voice are all good, production is fine. I've simply already had my fill of Adele.

I am not a fan of (pure) pop music of the singer/songwriter bent. And this is an easy listen for this type of music. That being said, this is just pop music and is not my preferred listen. I don't won't to bag on it. So, to be fair and not just a bastard about it...3 good stars. I also see that the next one 25(?} is coming up...oh great.

I don't know how someone who is seemingly 21 has a voice and creates songs that sounds like she's perpetually 45. The singles from this album are stellar - they were instant pop classics when they were released. I can't say the same for the rest of the songs, which I found boring and tedious. 3.5 rounded up

This is excellent. I don't live under a rock, so I've heard many of these songs before, but together they add up to an exceptional album. I think she is so much more compelling when she isn't doing sparse sad girl piano ballads. There are a couple here, but they remain compelling rather than overwhelming, which is how i felt listening to 25. I'm giving this a 5.

Adele's 21, what a huge album. Rolling in the Deep, Set Fire to the Rain, Someone Like You, Rumour Has It, are HUGE and were all on this album. Adele has such a great "lower range" voice makes her sound so much more powerful and emotional, which perfectly suites her ballads. Of course it's a breakup album, but she is so much more fiery than the typical "woe is me, i'm so sad" style of breakup albums. Musically, there's a lot of going on as she transcends genres, ranging from almost like a doo-wop in Rumour Has It to a country (Don't You Remember) to almost like a musical sound in One and Only. A lot of range. If you're alive, it's basically impossible to have not heard the singles on this album, but it just kinda cements how insane this album is in terms of power, relateability, and reach. Great album.

I’m really surprised by the negativity in the reviews. This isn’t my cup of tea personally, but the top review says they can’t understand how anyone could have an emotional reaction to this music? Let’s be serious. This is outstanding pop music. Plenty of hooks, well produced, and Adele’s powerful voice has plenty of personality. Plus I’m always a sucker for an artist who made it from the bottom to the top - and Adele’s is the ultimate such story. I will almost certainly not listen to this album ever again. But I can enjoy the pop hooks, appreciate the vocals and the very personal songwriting, and admire the enormous impact this album had.

I have found I can do about 35 minutes of Adele's voice before it starts to annoy me. This was more than 35 minutes. Also when like 70% of the songs are slow piano ballads, the album kinda drags. Also all the songs are sad love songs, wish there was a little more variety.

This is a really good record. Adele’s voice is undeniable — soulful, commanding, and full of emotional weight. The production is strong throughout, and the hits feel absolutely earned rather than overblown. What really surprised me is how consistently solid the album is front to back; it’s not just the singles carrying the load here. That said, I’m trying to keep 5-stars reserved for those rare, transformative listens, so I’m landing on a very strong 4. It’s impressive how much staying power 21 has, even after all the overexposure these songs got when they first came out. For me, it’s not perfect, but it’s way too good to dismiss the way some people on this site seem to.

Pretty solid stuff

For an adult contemporary album, a notoriously terrible genre, this one stands out among its peers. Consistent tracklisting with a strong vocal performance throughout, Adele makes this typically mundane and sappy genre impactful. If an album has of quality equal to Rumor Has It, Rolling in the Deep, Set Fire to the Rain, and Someone Like You than you know it is at lease something special. Beyond that I have a soft spot for the Lovesong, One and Only and Turning Tables. It isn't the greatest album in the world and can sometimes become extremely sappy and drag but overall its a fun time. I recommend it! 2.5/5 (which may seem low but 2.5 is average in my rating system.)

Back in 2011, I was annoyed when I found out that Adele wasn't black. I've had a hard time getting over it, but her voice is amazing. Maybe too many songs on the album.

I loved this album!

This is the first time I have listened to anything by Adele other than her hit songs, and I'm very, very impressed. Every track on this album should have been a hit, in my view.

I’ve never had a problem with Adele and removed from all the hype, the singles hold up pretty well. A few of the other tracks are good but most of them are bland and forgettable for me. (2.5)

Ah, the foghorn lady. I don't like her voice. The music is sometimes OK, but mostly too sterile. This is not for me, but now I understand why it's so popular: it's bland and inoffensive. Vanilla music.

I’ve been a big fan of this album since it came out. This one definitely holds up for me.

Rätt trist och överpolerat

Med flera absoluta bangers är detta hennes starkaste album by far imo. Ett par för många ointressanta låtar för en femma, men i övrigt jäkligt fint o välgjort!

Inleder med Rolling in the Deep, avslutar med Someone Like You. Välförtjänt megahit.

A smooth and dynamic voice is the be all and end all of this album. The "band" is nothing more than a backing track for her voice. Which, in this case, is good enough to carry the album. But I can't help but wonder what might happen if she had a good band as well.

Not my usual genre, but a lot of good songs here.

Exciting to get this album/artist as I’m familiar with the hits, but have never given a listen start to finish before. I love when artists write their own music/lyrics and draw from personal experiences - it’s such a sincere form of expression and clearly connected with a lot of people leading to this albums overwhelming success.

So depressing, nearly caused me to drive my car off a bridge. On a technical level a good album though.

Adele has a great voice. But she's a victim of being overplayed. I tried to listen to this album objectively, but it's hard when these songs have been played to death on every radio station, advert, TV show and as background music while you shop for groceries. Trying to get past all of that and treat these songs as if it's the first time I've heard them, the album starts off very well with "Rolling in the deep" and "Rumour has it". They both have a great Memphis blues feel to them. But, outside of that bluesy/souly sound, good chunks of the rest of the album feel very overproduced and unmemorable, opting to showcase Adele's voice over songwriting. "Someone Like You" finishes the album off on a very, very strong note. A simple song, with a simple melody and straight-forward lyrics, but it feels very genuine and real. And her voice is absolutely incredible in this song, working with the lyrics to lift the emotion of the song.

I forgot about the CHOKEHOLD this album had on me in 2011. I honestly added every song to my Liked Songs as they came up. I may need therapy.

I mean this is like extremely produced pop music, if this isn't a 3/5 idk what would be. Without a doubt better then 25, was overall better in everyway to that album.

Definitely her best album, so many unbelievably massive songs in this album that showcases her incredible voice. This list needs more attention to the pop albums that defined eras like this one, as real niche albums that the curators of the list like are slightly too prevalent. Great album, doesn’t grab me.

I think I would like Adele if I listened more of her but, what concers that album, it is good, yet not that great for me to love it. Some songs are really good, but others don't have much power on the overall of the project. But I liked it, it's a really pleasant album to listen to, bland and uninteresting sometimes, but being most of it good and nicely done.
