Reviews (page 9 of 14)
I love me a singer-songwriter album. This album is my introduction to Nick Drake. I really appreciate the sparse quality of his music and enjoy the guitar instrumentation.
Listened Before? N Spectacular! Especially knowing his story. This poor guy made some amazing music and basically killed himself because he was incredibly depressed about nobody paying attention to him. Sad story. Wonderful music. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Free Ride
Sad heavy beautiful
Love Nick Drake. Didn't have this album and will be getting it.
je trouve qu'il est très bon, malheureusement pas mon genre de music
Very likeable English folk music. I was familiar with the title track "Pink Moon", but not the other songs. Quite liked it.
Not his masterpiece but Nick is reassuringly quality again
Really sounds like it could’ve been made in this time period. Not an album I’d go out of my way for but a very pleasant listen.
An absolute incredible album, not a bad song on it, however there isn't one song that takes it to a 5 star. Rhythmically interesting, the way it was recorded and the fact that it wasn't given the respect it deserved at the time it was reased resulting in nick drakes suicide, heart breaking.
I love this album!
Wow - from the first vocal on Pink Moon, I am instantly transported to "One of These Things First" from the Garden State soundtrack where I first encountered him. The Garden State Soundtrack incidentally belongs on this list of albums - it's transformational. Anyway, I digress, Drake's falsetto register and rolling instrumental rhythms is hypnotizing. His life is so tragic, it is hard to separate it from the music, making the experience listening to this quite somber, and like Drake's life, the album feels too short and unfinished. But I do love it! Love the sadness, the stripped down, singer-songwriter style, the timelessness of it. But mood is part of this album no matter how you look at it, and so it won't be in high rotation for me, unless I need a think or a cry.
Pretty easy folk. Not sure I'd revisit but it is good.
This album gives some sort of comfort. I can’t explain it.
The definition of music is poetry. Definitely not my kind of music but a big fan. There were some songs I didn't really enjoy though, so that's why it got bumped down to 4.
Album Notes: -my last notes got erased so overall this is a very cozy and sad album that immerses you in its cozy and sad world - homie was down astronomically but he made that feeling very comforting and warm despite its subject matter Best Tracks: Pink Moon, Place To Be, From The Morning, Things Behind The Sun, Parasite Worst Tracks: uhhh i guess Harvest Breed and Road just cuz they are so short but they arent bad by any means
I was unexpectedly very moved by this album. It was very similar song to song but something about the brevity and the simplicity of the style gave it an emotional rawness
This is the second Nick Drake album I've reviewed so far on this generator. The first of his albums (Bryter Layter) was dark, brooding, and depressing as hell. This album came after that one, and, unlike that one, is just Nick and his guitar. There is no backing band or other artists collaborations. Apparently, the album before this one, because it was so slow and depressing, sold like shit, and radio stations stopped playing his music. Nick slipped further into depression, and got really heavy into pot and pills. This album is a product of that. Like his other record, the lyrics on this album are largely nonsense. Apparently, Nick rented a recording studio for two late night sessions. Half the songs on this record he cut the first night, and half the second night. No fiddling around with layering or overdubbing or anything, just sat down, pressed record, and hammered this record out. That shows insane talent! A few years after this album was released, Nick was found dead of an overdose of depression meds. An unfortunate end for a hell of an artist. The way that Nick played guitar was amazing. He managed to do double duty in that he could achieve a bass note, and his guitar riffs all at once, basically eliminating the need for a bassist. Overall, I enjoyed this album much more than the first of his that I reviewed. This one felt more balanced. Even though it was also super dark and melancholic, there was a rawness and beauty to it that was absent on Bryter Layter. I'm not sure if I will ever listen again, but I'm glad it was on this list. Favourite songs: Which Will, Free Ride, From the Morning, Know, Road, Pink Moon, Harvest Breed Least favourite songs: Horn, Parasite 4/5
very good album that details his own struggles while still being a very calming listen
Pink Moon is a great song and it feels right that the only reason I know this song is because it was used in a car commercial. That should be vaguely nauseating but then again I think of the marketing genius who suggested the song - there was absolutely no cache to having a Nick Drake song in a commercial. It had to be that they loved this song and pushed hard for it. And I like to imagine that the campaign was considered a failure in marketing circles and that this disgraced marketer is working in a bar somewhere or maybe selling used cars - that's even better - and they are completely satisfied with how things turned out. Thanks for this song, marketing genius! 'Road' is also a fucking banger.
I have everything Nick Drake recorded. I love his strange, claustrophobic and unsettling little world. The spartan arrangements only add to the weirdness - sometimes it sounds like Drake is right next to you, whispering into your ear. Intimate, thrilling and a bit unnerving. Funny how this is called 'folk' music - you could never imagine any of the music being performed as a roundel or any other kind of communal enterprise. When did folk cross the threshold from a collective to an individual experience? Insane that the title track was used on a car commercial.
There's only one "Pink Moon" on PINK MOON, but it's the pinkest of moons and still such a lovely song no matter how many times I've heard it. Fortunately, there are other songs that at least get close to the bull's eye and - thank you Jesus! - the whole thing is only 28 minutes long. And, annnnnd "From the Morning" is a damn great closer. Probably my 2nd favorite song on the album. So killer start, killer finish. That's a good recipe. Fun fact about that VW commercial: according to Wiki it was directed by Dayton & Farris of LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE fame and boosted sales of the album from 6k the year before to 74k. Crazy! I think this album would be very well-received if it came out today. Quiet's the new loud and dude would for sure be playing shows with Phoebe Bridgers. Ahead of his time or have we just moved backwards? Nobody knows.
A while back I listened to Bryter Later and I absolutely hated it, I thought I had heard this album before and enjoyed the experience but surely it couldn't be the same artist. it was and I just have to chalk it up to an album I just didn't like and this one being really good and had the vibe I dug.
4.5 stars. This album feels really ahead of it's time, something you'd hear a 21st century folk indie artist record. Simple acoustic guitar and vocals, occasional piano but it really works and the pacing is quicker than expected and I wish the run time was a bit longer (only 28 min). Pleasant sound, calming/lulling singing, but not too slow. No low points throughout but the standouts are the bookends: title track and "From the Morning."
I get a bit lost with all the Nick Drakes and Tim Buckleys, but this is good.
Yndisleg músík, tilvalin til hlustunar á myrkjum vetrardögum þegar kúrt er undir teppi með heitt súkkulaði á kantinum.
Very solid album, it's a shame he didn't get much recognition in his life time.
my absolute first thought about this album was that its album cover looks like a picasso. pink moon by nick drake absolutely does not sound like folk from 1971. i've listened to folk from the late sixties and early seventies as part of this project, and this album doesn't sound like it at all. i think part of it is drake's vocals. his voice is so gentle and calm, absolutely nothing like bob dylan, joan baez, leonard cohen, or neil young. i can't help but wonder about the guitar. it is an acoustic guitar, commonly used in folk music, but it doesn't sound as abrasive. perhaps the music production did something? regardless, i found pink moon to be a relaxing listen based on the mellow tone. there's not much accompaniment aside from the guitar (and the piano on one song). sometimes it's nice to have a lot happening in music, but here the music softens the listening experience. it's delightful. sometimes the lyrics are on the darker side, or they can be very minimal. but there's something about the presentation that forces you to pay attention. i must think it's telling on drake's last album before he died, his last song "from the morning" is an optimistic song.
This is good, it's really good, a tad melancholy in places but beautifully bare and clean song writing, guitar fret work, carrying off some beautifully arranged string strum and pluck patterns. This guy reminded me a bit of Norah Jones style of singing, husky and effortless, whispering a lifes journey in your ear. A good chill out album. Apparently Nick Drake was a notable influence on Robert Smith, who we all know is an accomplished guitarist with our group The Cure.
The singing/songwriting are full of sorrow. It's not my cup of tea that I would listen to all the time, but I have enjoyed hearing the songs today.
Favourite song: Things Behind the Sun
A lovely album, very restful.
Beautifully depressing album.
Extremely chill
Ok
Awesome, beautiful
Surprisingly nice for just being a voice and a guitar pretty much the whole album. Hadn't heard of him. Read he past away young. Shame he couldn't enjoy the accliam music like this would've brought him. Relaxing.
enjoyable, 7.5/10
I listen to this one less often than his earlier two albums... and in part that's because (for me) it's not as great as those two. The best songs really work with the intimate one take nature of the recordings, but there's a few that only ever sound like demos that need more work.
A gorgeous acoustic project I had never heard but learned I've had a long relationship with through a cover from a different band. A morning drive type record. That being said I'll have to give it a few more listens to let it sink in. Until then, it was nice.
I like the basic acoustic version rather than the flowery arrangements on the last ND album we had.
This is the Nick Drake album that seems to get the most recognition (and plays on Spotify). I find the song-writing across all three of his albums consistent but I prefer more versus less instrumentation. For example, the baroque-pop sound of Bryter Lyter makes that LP more interesting, maybe ever less melancholic, easier to listen to, end-to-end. Due to the sparse arrangements I would rank this third of the three we’ve been sent but still good. The title track is great.
The title track Pink Moon is a timeless classic and IMO is his best song. I was shocked to learn that he was only 26 when he recorded this and that he would die only two years later. Taken far too soon, he was a true musical genius. This album is sparse but not lacking, understated but it still says a lot. And the album cover is lovely also.
Sad and moody.
This gets a 4 for the beautiful and talented guitar playing. It’s not something I’m ever dying to hear but certainly not bad. I’m sure I would like it more if I could understand him half the time.
The VW ad guy! What a sad story, but a really nice album, spare and dark and moody. 4 stars.
One voice, one guitar, simple songs. Excellent.
favs: Things Behind the Sun, Parasite, Know least fav: Which Will (ig?) ...I honestly don't have anything else to say otherwise.
Beautiful album. Not much range, but the lyrics alone earn it my respect. 4/5
This is a 4 when I’m in the right mood, but it feels like the sort of thing where i forget that I l enjoyed it as much as I did, and each time I hear it again, I’ll remember “that’s right, this is a 4 star experience!”
Despite what my other ratings here might indicate, I am not a huge fan of singer songwriters. And yet I feel compelled by this album and its sense of calm loneliness. The spareness of the recording - literally just Drake and a guitar on everything except the title track where a bare tinkle of a piano is sprinkled in - really adds to that. It's very evocative of a certain kind of quiet contemplation, where I can just almost see a young man hunched over an acoustic guitar, focused on finger picking, mop of hair gently swaying, breathily singing out lyrics that only really mean anything to him.
Very talented, and clearly positioned in the chain of influence towards modern singer-songwriters.
Strangely soothing.
I've never heard of Nick Drake before, but I really enjoyed this album. The guitar is absolutely beautiful, and the simplicity really matches the rawness of the lyrics. I'm pretty sure that I've heard his music in movies or a television show at some point, because "Horn" sounded really familiar (and oddly enough that was my favorite track on this album). Listening to Pink Moon makes me want to check out some of Nick Drake's other albums.
While Pink Moon is likely to be the most popular track, the album overall is a vibe.
Normally I'm not a big fan of the acoustic singer/songwriter genre. Mostly because those albums lack the actual songwriting to make it good listens. Not this album though, this was stunningly engaging from start to finish, with great lyrics. Beautiful!
4.5
Sgu meget lækkert, afslappende, Singer/songwriter, lyder nyere end det er
8/10 relisten
sounds seminal, never heard it but it's underneath a lot of prog folk i've heard
Comes and goes without making much of an impression. His voice and guitar playing are still exceptional but doesn't seem to have the memorable songs that Bryter Layter have, although that could just be because I've listened to those two albums many more time than this. 4/5
Lovely album and a great talent. It’s not his finest work so he loses a star for that but absolutely worth listening to.
A beautiful, dark, album with appropriately sparse production and the occasional glimmer of hope. 4+/5
Super chill acoustic vibes
Strong thread and tone throughout
I'm a fan. Quite alright
Pink Moon is one sad, melancholic album. You can feel that from the first sound and the feeling stays with you until the end or maybe even longer. It's that type of music that gets to both your brain and heart, ultimately making you deeply understand what the author was going through there. The music isn't physically powerful, but it brings power through sound, meaning and message. Even though the music is slow, calm and very cool you can't call it boring or tiring. The album is absolutely well-composed and written by a master himself. It's a great piece of art. Fav track: "Pink Moon, least favourite track: none
I listen to this one less often than his earlier two albums... and in part that's because (for me) it's not as great as those two. The best songs really work with the intimate one take nature of the recordings, but there's a few that only ever sound like demos that need more work.
Peaceful and haunting 8/10
Really pretty, might be an even higher score if I listen to it more. 8/10
포근하다.
- Heard this before - Classic album - 28 minutes of a man with a guitar hasn't really ever sounded better - Very nearly 5* - Fav songs: Pink Moon, Things Behind the Sun, Parasite
Raw. Amazing playing. Great choruses and structure. Emotional. Loved it.
Really nice album. Pink Moon stands out above the rest of the tracks, which do start to sound a little same-y
Very nice while waiting for the redline to 95th. I confused this with Nick Cave at first and was bummed to have to listen to another one of his albums but this is much better. Also that tooth on the cover is what I imagine my teeth are feeling constantly
Loved this album. Just very pretty and I liked the guitarwork a lot too. 4.25/5
Not even 30 minutes long and it feels more complete than many albums twice its length. Such rich compositions and strong performances… although the title track isn’t a favorite if I have to be honest. Still, easy A-
I liked it, even though it wasn’t really my type of music. But I did enjoy listening to it, so I’m curious of checking out his other albums!
Great use of open tunings on the guitar. Nice calm vocals, does not at all sound dated or like it is from the seventies. Piano adds nice color to the mix. Has a Sufjan Stevens or Elliot Smith type vibe to it that I really like.
I definitely have to listen to it again. It felt beautiful but with a real listen i might either drop one star or realise that this is a masterpiece, i guess.
That was a damn good album. I had never heard of Nick Drake before and I was pleasantly surprised
Very pretty set of songs, less ornate than the Bryter album. I imagine one day this one will hit me hard: as it is I just admired it a lot
shorter than expected but super cute and pretty
A legendary album by a (now) legendary songwriter. His increasingly gloomy world view definitely seeps through on this, his third and final record. The emotions are never hidden and it seems like everything is constantly balancing on the edge of a knife. Indeed very haunting and it's very refreshing to hear songs which are absolutely cut the bone with no fill.
So freaking good.
Sparse, personal and dextrous.
Solid acoustic folk
Drake's less jazzy here and thus less to my taste, but the guitar work is still very good. Pink Moon is packed despite its minimalism, proof that songs can be short without being fragments.
So soft and smooth, it's really a feat to make 2 elements - guitar and voice - hold so much weight. Nice quiet listen.
I'm not sure if I prefer spare Nick Drake or Nick Drake with arrangements but I do know that this is the album of his that I have listened to the most, and that counts for something.
Super chill and nice classic Nick Drake. I think I prefer the stripped down acoustic singer-songwriter Nick Drake as a whole.
Minimalist but engaging, just guitar and voice, and sometimes just guitar. Short songs, gotta enjoy each while it lasts. Beautiful fingerstyle playing that I need to try.
Depressing but comfy
Listened this one already, kinda crazy this is the first album I got cause I love it, especially the title track.
A great little album that breezes by easily yet makes you want to listen over and over again. Nick Drake just has a magic with his guitar playing and his voice is incredibly soothing. Amazing stuff.
Folksy vibe with a moody feel to it. Solid instrumentals for listening.
sad, wonderful, beautifully written work of art. cannot get over this. highlights: pink moon, things behind the sun, parasite, free ride, harvest breed, from the morning
Really heartfelt, really creative, really showcases some legit talent. A lot of the songs are similar, though. At one point, I thought to myself, "Hey, this is that one song," but it wasn't - I was thinking of another song of his, and it took about a minute of listening to confirm they were different. Best track: Pink Moon
Muy chulo. Tranquilo, se hace mucho con una sola guitarra
depressingly beautiful, def a precursor to A Crow Looked At Me 40 years later
I really liked this album. It's probably getting a higher rating because I had never heard it before and it out-performed my expectations for it. It's simple and authentic. Well done, Mr. Drake.
A stark, beautiful record from an artist we lost way too soon. A true, singer-songwriter format that focuses on his brilliant songwriting with minimal instruments and his fragile, yet emotional vocal style. Essential listen, especially if you're a fan of Elliot Smith.
Folky, relax, great lyrics
Mellow, dreamy vibes. Chilly cottage morning.
Claaaaassic
Frid.
4/5
Expectations were high for this album, but they were not completely met. I prefer Bryter Layter! It's in between a 3 and a 4 for me, but I will give it a 4 because my group-mate already gave a 3.
Nick Drake is like a shadowy, mystery musician that made a few great albums. I quite like this album too.
this brought out the guitar nonce in me. usually folk artists bore the shit out of me but i really enjoyed this.
The only Drake album I actually honestly like, because it's just him and a guitar (plus a dash of piano on the title track).
Neglected and ignored in his life time, rightly lauded since. Masterpiece of yearning and melancholy.
Классная гитара, мрачные и меланхоличные мелодии и приятный голос. В принципе, все что надо. 7 из 10
I tried to listen to this without thinking too much about the Nick Drake backstory. But it runs heavy throughout the album. Which all makes for a compelling listen. The song structures are wonderful. The recording is almost in demo form. Rather than wonder what might have been, I think it's best to appreciate this album as a snapshot of the talent.
This album is depressing as hell. It works though.
Real chill
I'm not really a folk or acoustic guy, but this really resonated for whatever reason.
A very pleasant listening experience. I would definitely listen to more of his work.
New favourite hopefully.
This is a very short and concise album. I’d say it’s instrumentals are very basic but it brings out the singing and lyrics more which is the real component of this album. And this is his best work. 8.0/10
Simple, yet done very well.
great way to wind down on a friday, definite second listen due
Incredibly pleasant
Dawg this mans voice is fire wtf
Bra skit
Kan va biased för att mamma och pappa lyssnade på Nick Drake när jag var liten men satan vad mysigt det var
Very surprised with how much I liked it. Folksy and emotional. Only 28mins total but impactful!
Nick drake solid as always.
Soothing album. Makes me calm
Think Swoon
listened to again so warm and lovely
Very chill. Excellent for background I didn't even notice when I got back to track 1
Some great tunes on this, Cool guitar playing, lyrics, Why is it so short 8/10
Every singer songwriter owe a debt to this album, as beautiful as it is solemn.
very good, much better than I expected folk sound.
Wonderful album. So underrated
Very bare bones, but very haunting and well made. I think this album was perfect for today, it really struck a nerve with me. Not sure how I might feel about it in a few weeks, months, etc but as of right now I really appreciate it.
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Pink moon, Things behind the sun
Just a damn good singer songwriter album. One of those album that makes you wonder why its not more well known.
The third Nick Drake album! This I feel has the best sound of the three. It has a laser focus on nick's guitar work and his voice. The lyrics are more artistic and the songs in general more expressive. Things Behind The Sun for me is a standout track. Free Ride is another great example of this growth in sonic style.
Would listen again for chill songs
Keep this album in mind next time I just want something good and mellow.
Fantastic. Also listened to Talk Talk's Eden; also excellent.
All acoustic melancholy chill vibes. I like it way more than it seems like I should.
Tajjeb. U facli tisimghu ghax qasir.
Rating: 7,4/10 Had no knowledge of the artist before now. The album is so soothing and full of relaxing guitarplay. Will definitely give this more listens.
Good.
Beautiful melancholy.
It's undeniably lovely, but doesn't move me quite the way his other albums do. Not sure I can put my finger on why exactly... Fave track - "From the Morning"
I never listened to Nick Drake before and his voice is really powerful. I really didn't get all the hype for this album, but I'm could see its importance during the last song when I realized that I was fully immersed in his voice. A small piece of immersive art on this list! Great experience!
Used to listen to this album a lot in high school/college. Interesting dynamic and backstory to the album, overall the nostalgia for it pushes it to 4/5 stars for me.
I really enjoyed this album. But I didn't think there was really any standouts in particular.
Good
BEST OF GENTLE
When I first saw this album come up, I thought it would be an easy poo-poo-ing. Turns out this album is pure folk music, and the title track is one that I'd heard and rather liked (thanks to the cultural miracle of advertising). The entire album is pleasantly relaxing, and I'd definitely listen again. Easy 4 stars.
I've liked both of the Nick Drake albums (this one being the second) that I've heard, though I don't have a lot to say about them. He's a wonderful songwriter, both simple and subtle in his way 4/5
Silky sound, tremendous vocal register. A superb songwriter and singer.
Tämä oli miellyttävää taustamusiikkia työnteon taustalle. Tuli mieleen tuoreemmista artisteista Jose Gonzales.
Beautiful and sad
Classic 60s folk from an artist I never heard of before. Good run time and a good flow of songs sticking to the style.
Delicate
This album really grew on me upon multiple listens. The haunting vocals and stripped down to the bone production made this album extremely sad to listen to but also very enjoyable. I don’t have a favorite song because I just like the sound of the album in general
Timeless ...quality
surprisingly nice
chill
I liked it alot
Nice
Somber, but quite enjoyable. Feels like the music played in a coming-of-age film with the protagonist looking out the window on a train.
New one! Starts off slow but very wholesome.
The opening line of the first song, Pink Moon, sounds like ‘I zaw it written and I zaw it zay.’ Annunciate, bro! Come on! Honestly this really threw me for a loop the first time ‘round. I also thought he might be saying “Zooey written and I Zooey zay” at one point. And I’m like who the hell is Zooey? Then the second song, Place To Be, isn’t that strong, and I was starting to write this album off. But I liked the guitar playing. Was this yet another album with decent music and someone’s voice that knocks it down a star or even ruins it? Turns out no. The first listen I was solidly in the three star camp from a good music, iffy voice perspective. The second listen through had me thinking this is a poor man’s José González. Or that when I’m in the mood for something like this, I’d much rather put James Taylor on. During the third listen of this album, I realized my annunciation and voice hang ups were only on the first two tracks and the rest I liked. All this while appreciating the guitar even more. For instance, I was loving the guitar picking on Which Will. We’ll shit I thought, maybe this is a four star album. On the fourth listen of the album, I turned the lyrics on in AppleMusic and realized he’s saying “I saw it written and I saw it say.” Well now Zooey had revealed herself as a fraud and I got what he’s saying. I like that his tempo fluctuates from time to time. It’s like he lets his mood, in the moment, dictate subtle speed ups or slow downs in a song. Every once in a while it sounds like he misses a beat or skips a note. In the spirit of Bob Ross, I take these as happy little accidents whether they were done on purpose or not. By the fifth time hearing the album, I settled on this being a bourgeois version of the folk singer songwriter genre. Not quite the elitist crust of them all, but a very good representation. It’s going to stay in my library.
Very soothing. I listened to it twice. Quite enjoyable
A really beautiful melodic folk album. 8.9/10 Best Tracks: "Pink Moon" "Place to Be"
Smutny folk to moje klimaty.
Think of Garden State. That is this type of music. Acoustic, folk
Sehr schönes, anderes Folk-Album!
Fand ich sehr sehr gut. Singer songwriter Lücke gefüllt
Oldie, but a goodie.
Mooie, rustgevende muziek met hier en daar een wat donkere ondertoon
:) :)
Short and mellow. Just a voice and a guitar
4
A surprisingly good listen. I don't recall ever hearing about Nick Drake. This doesn't sound like an album out of 1972---a lot of these songs are ones that I could hear Scrubs using!
This album slaps pretty damn hard for a sad wee folky number. I like how it's way more downplayed than his other stuff. But it can't hold a candle to Bryter Layter
What a pleasant surprise! I only knew the first song of the album, didn't know much about the singer. Loved his voice and really enjoyed listening to this album. Nice
Did not remember this artist but I had heard at least one of the songs. I really liked it and it will become part of my rotation. Unique voice, and peaceful guitar.
Really good! Mellow music that was quite enjoyable.
Pathetically, I've loved this album since Garden State.
This album was a welcome surprise and continues the streak of awesome albums that the rng has been giving. It's simple, just a man and his guitar, but damn this was a good album! It's short, but somehow the perfect length, and the songs were lyrically great, and give you a sense that he went into the album, and just played what came to him, and that's what they put out, like with "Know". "Parasite" was definitely my favorite song on the album, and this is one that i'll be listening to again in the future.
Much more enjoyable than my last Nick Drake experience. Pink Moon is amazing and the remaining tracks are a bit more engaging, memorable, and though not "pop hits", are more enjoyable.
Amazing album. Beautiful, mellow and tragic. 4 stars.
Nick Drake keeps his shirt on in the pool
Heerlijk rustig gitaar geplokkel
Really good. Sad life
I didn't actually listen to this today, but I have many times in the past, including once very recently. A lovely winter album.
Beautiful, easy listening before bed, I have listened to Nick Drake before but not the full album.
Put in mind of my first encounters with Nick Drake, I think my brother introduced me, but we didn't talk much about it and the internet still being fairly nascent in the late 90s, I just walked around in my ignorance. I heard something from this album playing in a shop and me filmed it to a girl working there, and she said something about how sad it was, which is how I learned he wasn't around anymore. I haven't listened to it in a while, and I'm surprised by how brief this album, and and most of the songs, are. Under the spell of the phrasing of Things Behind the Sun, I wrote this: https://songsofdays.blogspot.com/2007/05/163-92098-her-majestys-fools-fibonacci.html
Incredible. Sounds like something that would be released today.
A great, calming album. Drake is interesting because I wouldn't call this straight folk, but that's really what it is.
Adoro esse CD, só voz e violão, belos acordes, dedilhados complexos.
Super chill. Voice reminds me of a friends band from university (in a good way).
Short soft beautiful
Really good folk rock. Surprised I enjoyed it. Never knew about Drake but I can see how he would be influential. You can hear the struggles in his lyrics.
I like Nick Drake.
Nice guitar playing, but didn't care for the words/voice. Might have to listen again
bien posé et agréable à écouter
Enjoyed it, gave me heavy Johny Meyer vibes. Favorite songs pink moon and Free Ride. Love the acoustic and somewhat dreary mood of the project. Will revisit when I'm looking for something more laid back, 6/8.
Great listen. Really liked the vibe.
Very cool acoustic singer-songwriter style album. Kinda reminds me if Jack Johnson played more interesting licks.
An album I can fall asleep with, in a good way
Good but not my cup of tea
absolutely haunting and beautiful, 8.5/10
Soothing Acoustic Folk
melancholic. But the type of melancholy that you resonate with.
I love the song Pink Moon. The album isn't my favorite by him (give me Five Leaves Left or Bryter Layter).
Very pleasant. Not randb but soothes me just the same. Highest 3 possible
I liked this much more than i anticipated. The title track is fantastic.
Nice poetry if you care to look into the lyrics but slightly boring and too short
Saul Devlin vibes.
Good album. Short and sweet. Nice acoustic vibe with a unique sound.
Suuuper interesting folk album. You have to have the right voice for folk, and he has it 100%. Guitar complements really well. I wish this album was like 7 songs though.
Sure the quality of the music is a 5 I guess but rating this a 3 based off my personal enjoyment and how much I think I’d go back to this. I feel like this is just praised by most people cause everyone else says it’s good, but if it were released today nobody would bat an eye
I listened to the album twice. I liked it, but at the same time, there was nothing I really remember about it both times.
beautiful
I actually kind of vibed with this. I enjoyed it in the same way as I enjoy like a Michael Hedges.
IT'S OK. Kind of dopey and sad, decent melodies and but nothing lyrically that made me drop my spoon.
cool chill ablum 6.5/10
Maybe it'll get to four. I have to listen to it again while I'm not working. I'm more of a melody man, but there is something here.
An artist I've barely listened to, but when I did, I thought "Oh, so this is where Stuart Murdoch got all his ideas from!" Not so much on this album though, with its stripped back production. Just one man and his guitar. It's a good'un. All my gentle hippy friends who rave about Nick are good people. I get it!
I was digging it. Would be some good camping or hiking in the woods vibes
I’m a massive Nick Drake fan, but this is too experimental for me.
I'm not used to this voice with strings that sound so alive, it works well tho but it's a new one for me cause I can fully hear the introspective lyrics but the instrumentation is creating some dissonance but that might very well be just me, I do wonder how this was received when it was released, place to be is my favorite track in the entire album. it's a nice listen this feels like something that might have inspired the sassy the sasquatch show on YouTube honestly, I like it but it's a little to different to my ears and too short to hold me for as long as I need, I like the giant peach on the cover it reminds me of a book I frequently read at school lunches when I was younger oh also things behind the sun is the also really good but short like all the others in the album.
Two in a row but at least we’re done with him now. I thought this was his best one, so at least there’s that. I enjoyed the music and his vocals were less dour.
this fits smack bang in the middle between the other two nick drake albums on the list. whilst it's not got the vibes of bryter layter, it's so much better then Five Leaves Left. self title track 1000% the best on the album. too short tho
It's a nice listen, similar in many ways to his other albums on this list, but a lot more melancholy. It's skilful and comes from the heart, but it really doesn't appeal to me on an intimate level.
Started off a bit awkwardly with the repetition of the word “pink” but smoothed out into a pleasant experience.
I don’t really care for Nick Drake’s singing tone, and I think his fragmentary-feeling folk songwriting leaves something to be desired (one might even go so far as to say it’s given more kudos because there’s an impulse to read more into it and praise it more when it’s discovered as posthumously at the end of a young singer’s career). But that acoustic guitar though, stunning sound both in terms of playing and in terms of production, feels rare I’ve heard the instrument sound that good and that’s a huge boon here.
I may be in the minority here, but Pink Moon leaves me a bit cold. It’s often held up as some untouchable masterpiece—whispered about in hushed tones as if it’s sacred—but to my ears it feels more slight than profound. The stripped-back intimacy (just Drake and a guitar, for the most part) is undeniably stark and personal, yet it borders on monotonous if you’re not already tuned into his wavelength. There are moments of quiet beauty—the title track in particular has a gentle pull—but much of the album drifts by without leaving a strong impression. Admirers hear fragility and emotional depth; I hear something that struggles to rise beyond background mood music. It’s perfectly pleasant, but the near-mythic reverence surrounding it feels out of proportion to what’s actually there.
Listened to it a lots two decades ago. It’s not as good as I remember
One of those albums that I feel I should really like but just don't do anything for me. Decent folky singer songwriter stuff and sounds much more modern than 70s, but quite boring really.
Not bad, would listen again
Feels kinda normie, although ahead of its time. Good BGM.
Slow, somber, folky tunes. Like but kinda sad.
I like It
Not a bad album just didn’t click for me.
A good album with good instrumentation and lyrics.
Liked before; now I love. Also feel like this shows up in a lot of movies I’ve seen but can’t remember which ones
3.5
Sweet and simple. Perfect mid-morning listening.
I like how soft and peaceful it is to listen to. Just not the biggest fan of the style of singing and the songs just sort of seem to go nowhere. But not bad just not for me.
Campfire in the mountains
First listen
It was an ok album didn’t really understand it
ok i guess
Crazy writing. I’ve never been a fan of the stripped back approach of acoustic pop, but I found myself enjoying parts of this album. Don’t think I’ll be revisiting though.
O álbum é bem gostoso de ouvir, acho que eu não ajudei na experiência por ouvir o mesmo na academia tendo em vista que é bem focado em sua letra.
I guess it is forever tied to the VW commercial in my mind. Not a bad thing; it just made me think about the history of using “cool” songs in ads and this one really seemed like the beginning of that. (In my lifetime. Don’t well akshully me, please.)
Notts bad
An interesting atmospherically album, the voice of the singer is so smooth and calm, I think it is the perfect album for a sunny summer day when you hit the road 3/5
Yeah it was okay
7/10 liked the acoustic sound
7 - GOOD
Not a bad album, not a massive fan of singer song writers as the domes get repetitive. I’m sure in 1975 this thing went off
He's got a nice voice, it's a good sound to have on, but it is (as so much folks is to me) pretty same-y.
love his voice. just not a huge fan of pure acoustic guitar music
3/5 Favorite Song: Harvest Breed
Listened 3 times hoping it might click or garner more of my attention. Never really happened. It’s plenty fine just not catchy or inspiring of further listens. My ears would prefer to engage elsewhere. 3/5
Meh
Super chill guitar music, nice for background dinner-shenanigans. Pink moon is a calm banger.
I have never heard of Nick Drake before. At first I found the music rather flat and emotionless, but it slowly grew on me. "Things Behind The Sun" was a turning point, and convinced it was actually good. The emotion is there, it’s just subdued, the listener definitely needs be in the right state of mind and take the time to fully appreciate the general tone and mood of the album. I understand why it’s on this list, and I definitely understand how this would speak to some people on a very fundamental level. But from a personal point of view, I have a hard time relating with the lyrics and the emotions the artist tries to convey. Maybe I’ve never felt depressed or melancholic enough…? It’s not something I’d listen again anytime soon, but I’m glad I gave it try. It’s pretty short anyway, so it never overstays its welcome, as too many album do.
Not sure why this is a must listen but it was fine I guess
Solid acoustic work
Great Songs: Which Will Good Songs: Pink Moon, Place To Be, Things Behind The Sun, Free Ride, Harvest Breed, From The Morning Mid Songs: Road, Horn, Know, Parasite Bad Songs:
Highlights: Know, Harvest Breed. In a nutshell: the bookend. Drake's discography is kinda ironic. His mental health was unsteady throughout his adult life and the evidence was right there in the songs. He's an artist that many musicians name drop as inspiration, and you can hear it on indie releases (not just folk and chamber pop). Overall: 6/10
Pink moon is such a nice song. Acoustic work is nice and Nick’s voice is a bit trance inducing. Iys solid but very somber.
Not super my thing - very soft and folksy, but my attention span wouldn't allow me to enjoy it
Familiar eery but could not listen too often, so borderline not a 4
It felt so unfinished. So much potential that a good co-writer or producer could have bought out. A tragic reflection of Nick Drake I guess.
Voljela bih da više podnosim ovu opuštajuću muziku ali ne ide, nešto mi se više dopao prošli njegov album, možda je do raspoloženja doduše.
Pretty average, nothing special to me.
Another A Cappella classic. Love.
Mysigt, lite Donovan-vibes fast mer melankolisk (mindre lsd kanske).
Started out very strong but my interest faded a little as the album progressed. Unexpectedly good for sure though.
good I think, I could have enjoyed it more if I have listened it on a rainy day.
Que album mas relajante, la voz aireada, la guitarra, todo…
I enjoyed the guitar playing, imperfect as it was at times. There wasn't enough clarity in the recording of his vocals, so I couldn't understand most of what he was singing about. I'm sure he was a brilliant lyricist, but I had to strain too much to hear those lyrics. Sadly, I'm disappointed.
Moody. I’m not usually in the mood for acoustic guitar music
Pleasantly sleep inducing
I can understand why this wouldn't be everyone's jam but it is mine
I think I liked this one, but I also feel like I didn’t give it a proper listen. Going with a 3 for now but I think it’s probably more interesting than that. I need to throw on some headphones and sit with it a bit.
I thought I was going to be listening to a weird australian dude talking through murder stories, but that's not Nick Drake, that's Nick Cave. I think overall I did prefer this album to any of Mr. Cave's. I don't love Nick Drakes voice, but the instrumentation carries this album.
The guitar work is too cool for me to hate this folk music. Well done Nick Drake.
Pink Moon — interesting accent o.0 Things Behind The Sun — okay i could’ve sworn I didn’t tick country/folk WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS IS POP is 70’s pop just modern folk LOL Horn — This album so far is good to be in the Eternal Breath album but this one’s also a Words at a Standstill Place To Be — Pretty consistent with the other songs. Parasite — it was decent Which Will — kind of forgettable (?) Free Ride — It’s pretty middle of the road for me. Know — This one’s also not to my taste. Harvest Breed — I DID NOT LISTEN TO IT From The Morning — I DID NOT LISTEN TO IT Road — I DID NOT LISTEN TO IT look im sorry but i just do not have the time to listen to it no matter how short it is i am honestly just so exhausted right now it feels like i have a brain injury but no actual injury occurred
It was definitely something different to what I usually listen to but I liked the chill vibe and intrumental, vocals could’ve been better
Liked this one less than ‘Bryter Layter’, just a bit too slow for me. Still musically interesting, overall 2.5/5
Would I listen again: some songs Very minimalistic, I liked the first few songs the best. I did not like know at all, repetitive instrument things drive me nuts
mid
Overall Rating - 3.18/5 (6.36/10). Very simple. Just a man and his guitar. Nothing necessarily earth-shattering, but very good musicianship and simple melodies and harmonies. My kind of music.
Very inner reflective. The type of music i enjoy in a old style coffee house (Godfrey Daniel's for example)
Wasn’t that bad. I like some of the lyrics and some of the songs however I do not like his voice. I would like to see how these songs would be done by a more current artist with a better voice.
It's sad knowing that Nick Drake passed away after this album was released, it would have been nice to hear where his music would have gone. Nothing, at least to me, special about this one, but a good album none the less.
