Acoustic goodness, a good discovery
Ihan tykkäsin tästäki. Synkämpualeista, mutta mikässiin.
What a charming album. It’s much better than his previous album Bryter Layter we’ve already had on this list. That was ruined with the mostly awful strings and brass accompaniments. Which reading his story was probably the fault of over enthusiastic producers/record company. He’s got such a unique voice and style that it seems just suited to stripped back with the picking guitar style only. Really super chilled and an engaging listen. ‘Things behind the sun’ was the immediate standout of sorts, but it all seemed of similar quality. So I’ll give it a 4 today off a couple of listens. But suspect I’ll regret that as I’ll listen to this more and I suspect it’s a grower.
Apparently Peter Buck from REM once asked producer John Wood how he captured the intimate sound on this album. Wood replied that Nick Drake had simply sat in front of a single microphone and played his guitar. It really is a captivating performance that was sadly to be Drake’s last as he passed away at the age of 26. I can start to understand why Robert Smith and Michael Stipe were so worried about passing thirty now.
Pretty.
Lemppari: Things Behind the Sun Vähiten lemppari: Harvest Breed
At last, I got this album. "Place to Be" is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. I first heard it on BBC Radio 6 one morning. It's simply just one hell of a song. Anyway, the other tracks are good as well, just not on "PtB"s level. 4 stars for "Pink Moon".
Kinda good
Okay I really loved this. It's rare to find accoustic albums that don't sound like dog shit, and I'll admit I haven't listened to Nick Drake before but this was a really lovely album to listen to. Overall this album had a lot of ups and downs in terms of the vibe it gave me. Sometimes it was quite down and real sad girl vibes and then it would switch to upbeat happy melodies so I liked the unpredictableness of it. I don't think I had anything negative to say about it, but at the same time I can't think of anything that made me fall in love either so 4/5 it is.
On first listen, I'm underwhelmed. I knew what to expect: acoustic guitar and vocals are the only instruments apart from a piano on the opening track. What I didn't realize is how truly bleak and sparse it would be. Favorites after one play are Things Behind the Sun and Parasite. At only 28 minutes, this deserved another listen. Place to Be and From the Morning stood out this time, but there's still parts that just don't do it for me, like Horn and Know. ... I keep coming back to this so I guess there's subtlety here to unearth. Can be quite beguiling.
Very relaxing
Really good album, very somber and calm. Faves: Pink Moon, Parasite, Know
28 minutes was enough time of time to convey a lifetime of emotions. I loved the guitar playing, loved the vocals, loved the song structures. I had never heard Nick Drake before, but in listening to this album 52 years after it was made I felt an instant connection across the years and across the ocean.
Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5
It’s such a pity that I had never heard of Nick Drake before. His album is truly great. It’s not filled with a lot of tones, but it’s full of spirit. My favorite tracks are “Things Behind the Sun” and “Parasite.” His vocals, guitar, and the solitude vibe are fantastic.
Out of all of the folk/singer song writer albums I've gotten so far, this is easily the best. I see why this album is held in such high regard. Great singing and lyrics throughout the album. When listening to horn I immediately noticed that this song had the same melody as boris' farewell. I knew Boris had an album cover that referenced another Nick Drake album, but I never knew the connection between these songs. So I guess that song is a tribute to Nick Drake. In short, very good album, I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. (Also check out Boris if you like shoegaze, noise rock or sludge metal) High 4
Loved it. Very good.
Really awesome singing-songwriting? Too short, and some songs hit less than i wouldve hoped. But awesome
Pink Moon but it’s sunny.
Prachtige doch hartverscheurende teksten, zoals die op 'Place To Be', 'Parasite' en 'Things Behind The Sun'. 8,5/10 Highlights: Place To Be Which Will Things Behind The Sun From The Morning
8,5/10 Highlights Things Behind the Sun is veruit het mooiste
Nice and peaceful guitar
I had 'discovered' Nick Drake in college, and then completely & totally forgot about him until this came up here. A little bit reminiscent of Elliot Smith. Melancholic and comforting. It's like you're in a coffee shop and it's being performed right in front of you. This album is a keeper and is one of those sweaters you keep for ages.
I had heard Pink Moon in passing (movie or something) but was otherwise unfamiliar. The entire album is a nice listen. I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Haunting, heart wrenching, sweet, and timeless in a way that my partner guessed it was recorded in 2005
Great album. Previously I only knew the title track, but I wanted to hear it because I kept hearing people mention Nick Drake when talking about Elliott Smith. Besides the title track, which is great, I also liked "Road" and "Things Behind The Sun", but really the whole album is great. I'd want to hear his other albums.
Yes, I didn't know about Nick Drake until that Volkswagen commercial. It doesn't take away from the fact that this is precisely the kind of folk music I love - dreamy, wistful, acoustic goodness.
really beautiful album - listened in piece meal
Not sure why this sticks out from all the other "a guy with an acoustic guitar" albums I've heard in my life, but it does. Lovely piece of music.
Really impressed by what he does with almost exclusively a guitar and a voice. Fantastic songwriting and some really enjoyable guitar work. Definitely going to be digging deeper into his catalogue. It's exactly the sort of album I wanted to make about 20 years ago.
Really great chill album.
If you like Nick Drake and his low-key delivery, you'll love this album. It's all so low-key that it's hard to parse out the individual songs without giving it a lot of earnest concentration. All this sounds like criticism, but I don't mean it that way. Nick Drake is like still water--it runs deep for those who want to make the deep dive into his lyrics (as the arrangements are bare-bones simple).
Honestly I had never heard of Nick Drake. If I ever heard his music it would have been in a disconnected on the radio sort of way. I am sold! Damn, I really liked this. A bit short maybe for a full on experience, but maybe it is also because it went by fast. I subscribed to his youtube channel and he will be on my regular playlist. Great discovery for me! Kind of a singer songwriter vibe with a pop appeal... mellow, nice. Maybe like easy listening but not so easy as to put one to sleep. Yeah, it is definitely worth a listen.
very lovely (a bit repetitive tho)
Precursor of Beck
I found Nick Drake to be difficult to understand verbally, but musically I loved the vibes!! Know, Parasite, and Things Behind The Sun really stood out to me!!
great beautiful touching honest stuff, even if i prefer his first two offerings, which were a little less stripped down
bello gia lo conosco, molto iconico .
This album is tragic and beautiful. Had me completely enthralled the whole time. 8/10 Sad man makes sad, beautiful music.
Another great Album from this guy, shame we don't have more
Classic.
A calm, somber, and yet soothing album. Nick Drake does so much with the 28 minutes of runtime. The production on here is fantastic and very memorizing. Looking at Nick's tragic history he really does embodying this album as a whole. A great listen through and through. Best - Pink Moon (MPF), Place To Be, Horn, Things Behind The Sun, and From The Morning Worse - No bad songs 4.50/5
feel like i say "a classic" a lot, but this certainly also falls into that category. Perfect for a rainy day or just a relaxing drive.
maybe closer to a 4.5 - really lovely, had never heard of it before but will def be revisiting!
I have always really enjoyed this album but never quite understood why it is so wildly popular compared to some of it's contemporaries that i've found a bit more enjoyability in. Regardless... its wonderful
So chill
It’s a short album but its stunning. Lovely music and beautiful lyrics. I reviewed five leaves left about 3 months ago and didn’t enjoy it at all. I found Drakes voice tough to enjoy. On this album it really works with the folky guitar sound. I enjoyed this and will listen to it again. Favourite song: Things behind the sun Least favourite: Horn Album artwork: I love the album cover
Wow, overplayed but classic. I'm guessing a 4.
Liked.
Put this on at the zoo and teared up in front of a giraffe
Nice. I like his voice
I love the way this was recorded. Two short late night sessions without big production. Leaves a lot of haunting space in the songs.
beautiful
This album has a lot more depth and weight when you realize what Nick Drake was dealing with at the time, easier to visualize while listening to the album, as dread as it can come across. His unique subtle voice and creative chord work makes this a classic, bar none. 3.6
sparse instruments and vocals, has a very intimate feel. really enjoyed this
Not super my thing, but do have some songs that catch my attention.
Difficult to rate. Taking only this album into account I must say that I didn't like it all that much. So that would mean 3 stars. But I do recognize that Nick Drake has influenced lots of other artists some of whom I rate very highly. So taking that into account 4 stars seems to be more appropriate.
Great guitar work, arrangement and playing Enjoyed more as the album went along. Will listen again as I struggled to understand the lyrics and I think his songs will resonate quite a bit with me. Would have been a surprising five if the lyrics came through.
Gotta listen to it many times.
A real beauty, focused and to the bare essential. Naked soul displaying itself. It is simply sad to think which pain must be behind this. This could not be longer. Listen loud!
This album feels ahead of it's time. It reminds me of sad, stripped back folk artists kind of like Elliott Smith. While the album is short, it packs a punch and doesn't feel overstated. Best Songs: Place To Be, Things Behind The Sun, Parasite Worst Songs: Harvest Breed
Wow, Nick Drake right after Bill Callahan? Could I get anymore melancholy, acoustic singer-songwriters action?! This album speaks to me more than the last one I had but now I need to go check that one out again.
ma che caruccio questo fooooolk <3
I've really only heard pink moon the song. I like it, but the album has been influential enough that the first half almost felt trite now and a little samey with the droning open chords and mid range kinda adynamic singing. Starting with parasite it picks up and I really like the penultimate 3.
One of the highlights in folk music.
It's wonderful. Not much more to say
I need to give this another listen. I feel as if there’s still much more to unpack. Great listen, soothing, intimate, yet somewhat chilling. We lost Nick Drake way too soon. To anyone reading this who’s struggling: it does get better. Your problems are likely temporary, but suicide is permanent. Save yourself, and love yourself today, right now.
Going into this album, I was ready to treat it the same way as I did PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE by Dennis Wilson or IF YOU WANT IT DARKER by Leonard Cohen, or how I'm sure I'll treat BLACKSTAR by David Bowie. In short: I tend to define albums like these, at least to one extent or another, by peoples' deaths. Even BACK TO BLACK, as much as I didn't want to, I partially defined by Amy Winehouse's death. So here we have Nick Drake's PINK MOON. Before today, I'd always thought of it as "that bleak, depressing album made all the sadder by its proximity to Nick's death." Hell, before today I thought this album was released **posthumously**—that's how much I'd had his passing looming over the album. Indeed, as I first listened to the side one and realized it wasn't as bleak as I thought it was, there was this air of melancholy I just couldn't shake. Even as I came to find out how beautiful it could be, the melancholy lingered. "How sad he died in proximity to this album's release." That's a thought I wasn't holding by the end of the day. In-between listening to side one and finally giving the whole thing I spin, I watched Abigail Devoe's Vinyl Monday video on the album. In it, she makes the following statement, which all but calls me out for my mindset: "I don't think it's intentional, but those who call PINK MOON one of the saddest albums ever made apply the end of Nick's life to his work, and that robs him of his legacy." I mean, let's consider—what even **is** a PINK MOON? I always thought it was a sad, poetic metaphor for something. However, a pink moon, from what I've put together, is actually the first moon of the spring season. The signal that winter—the hard times—is over, and that there are brighter times ahead. And with that framing in mind... Re-listening to the title track, when the piano line came—the only time on the album there's an instrument aside from acoustic guitar—I nearly cried. And Nick's guitar playing throughout, especially on "Horn"... What a talent. What an incredible talent. Although, I'll admit, if I'm not in love with this album, it's because runs a bit old on side two. It feels weird to say that kind of thing about a 28 minute album, and "Parasite" and "From The Morning" are exceptions, but that's just how it is. Maybe once I give it more time... Hell, maybe if I had given it the time it deserved today instead of realizing too late that it deserves it. As it stands, PINK MOON—and all the albums I mentioned above, for that matter, are more than just their artists' passing. And if I'm sad about anything in regards to it, it's that they didn't live long enough to see these albums succeed.
I'd never heard of Nick Drake before, but wow what a find! A very good album I really enjoyed!!! Very high 4 ⭐️
Soft vibes
Extra star for realizing more than half an hour of solo acoustic music with a soothing, somewhat dull voice would be just too much.
Decent album, good as background music.
Hauntingly beautiful, enjoyed this one.
Beautiful, quiet, elegant. A mind in such turmoil produced music so calming.
The first time I heard this (now quite a while ago) I found it boring. This time I paid more attention & definitely appreciated it more. Couldn't throw it on any old time but gets a 3.5 from me. Free Ride was a highlight.
Chill
Listened on my drive to work. I'll listen again
If you ever have a meditation music folder, this album belongs to it! Surprisingly an amazing album 4.5/5
Timeless!
I had know idea that Jack Johnson was reincarnated. I’m a huge fan of singer songwriters. Enjoyed this one.
Soothing, sweet, sad, sexy
Classic album – it's a shame that Nick Drake passed so young.
This is the second Nick Drake album I've listened to from this list. It's every bit as amazing as his first album. What an amazing talent he was.
beautiful singer songwriter album, sad to hear about his early passing, i really liked this one, 8
Singer songwriter classic
Great for a chill night
I'm so happy to be reminded of how great Pink Moon is. Listened to this record over and over again yesterday. Every single song is a beautiful little piece of atmosphere despite being so simple. Nick Drake's ability to create such a deep, mellow vibe with so little is inspiring. I didn't connect with this record to the point of giving it five stars, but I will put this album back in rotation. Would love to have a good vinyl copy too. Four stars.
Darker and more stripped back than some of his other offerings, but great guitar led, introspective, thoughtful folk
Nice, relaxing, easy to listen to.
Superb. Favourite track(s): Free Ride and Pink Moon
Setting: Walking several miles home from the mechanic Mood: Tired but upbeat I really like this. Pink Moons been on the list of album I know I should listen to for ages, and it lived up to it. I didnt listen closely to the lyrics, but the overall mournful sound was right up my alley. Album cover: A+
Mood: Slightly positive, 6/10 Setting: Driving home from my parents house Very peaceful. It even cured my road rage for the brief 28 minutes it took for the entire album. Side note: I love the short little albums, wish people did that more. All the songs were great, although I thought they sounded very similar and blended together which I why I am only giving it a 4. I should have been listening to more Nick Drake my whole life, he really puts ya at ease.
This album bangs. I listened to it a bunch after our first Nick Drake album. His voice is weird but enjoyable. I think the album has a great diversity of instrumentation and manages to stay fresh throughout. It helps that its less than half an hour long. The album cover rocks. I'll definitely listen to it again. 8/10
Favourite= Parasite
Ein sehr reduziertes und akustisches Werk. Besonders Star sind die Momente mit Klavier und Gitarre. Mir gefallen die Songs sehr gut. Hervorragender Klang, tolle akustische Gitarre.
So incredibly stripped down and personal. There really are no layers to go through in the music. It's just this one man and his songs.
Nice listen on a sunny morning.
Pretty good! I enjoyed it.
A quiet album for quiet days.
Beautiful, soulful, whimsical folk pop. It’s my favourite album of his so it’s a 4 star for me! Worth it all just for the title song itself which is achingly beautiful.
First listen Saved 7/11 Top track: Things Behind The Sun
High quality quiet folk. Just largely Nick and his guitar. Super poignant and lovely. Good kickback album. Hard to believe he was largely discovered posthumously. Unexpected bangers: Things Behind the Sun, Parasite
4.5 Wow, Nick Drake is 3 for 3 with this list. I mean, you knew Pink Moon was coming after seeing the last two made it on, but still, you have to admit, having every album of your career make a list of the 1001 best albums of all-time is an impressive feat. And appropriately, we’re ending his run with the last of the three, which also happens to be his best. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it a third time - Nick Drake has composed some of the most hauntingly beautiful music ever written, and this is the peak of that charm, where any sense of backing instrumentation is stripped away, and we’re left with just Drake’s soft, delicate vocals and raw, acoustic guitar work. It’s an incredibly powerful display of emotion and musical brilliance, though in Drake’s case, it’s also the product of an unwell headspace, one which he was never able to overcome. In many ways it adds to the haunting nature of this album, but in just as many ways, I think its subtle, withdrawn approach provides a sense of comfort. And really, I think that’s what this album ultimately boils down to and what keeps bringing people back to it - it’s a comforting listen from a tortured genius. It’s also the epitome of short and sweet - I couldn’t point to a bad moment here if I tried. This was so nearly a 5/5 from me, but I just don’t think it QUITE hits that mark - though it’s damn close. Still, having scored no lower than a 4 from me across all three albums is a pretty noteworthy accomplishment in my eyes, one which I think earns Nick a special place in my musical catalog. I truly think he’s one of the greatest songwriters of all-time, and that he walked so that so many of my favorites could run. RIP my guy - Hope you’ve found peace somewhere now.
Beautiful music. absolutely worth a listen. Loved his voice.
I liked this and listened to it several times. Generally a fan of this genre if the singing, playing and writing are all good.
Favorite Tracks: Parasite Things Behind The Sun From The Morning
I have heard of Nick Drake but I have never actually sat down and gave him a listen. Pink Moon is one of those albums that gets put on Best Of lists all the time so I knew it had a reputation. Listening and I can see why. The opening song and Nick Drake's voice hit hard. The lyrics and his words really made a mark. Intimate and comforting. The buzz on the guitar and Nick's voice made this a damn good listen.
Wonderful slow tunes!
sleepy but nice as usual
first album I wish was longer but theres probably good reason for its length
Being totally blind to any daily expectation of what I get to listen to from the list is part of why I'm enjoying the experience. This album was an audio revelation for me as I very much enjoyed the acoustic guitar. Then I checked the wiki and learned who Nick Drake was. Now I'm going to go back and focus on his lyrics. Hopefully, one box of tissue will be enough.
More chill guitar music
quick and easy listening. always a good vibe
Nick Drake is really one of the gems of this for me. I liked five leaves left a little better but this has such a nice chill sound too.
I think this along with Bryter Layter are Nick Drakes' best albums. Very cozy album, got slightly better songs than 'Five Leaves Left'. As I said last time, I think this is the embodiment of calm, relaxing and cozy music you want to listen to during spring or fall. I still think this lacks something to deserve a 5 star rating. It's very unique, and the quality and high and even throughout the album, but still not quite a 5. Strong 4 feels more reasonable.
Nick Drake really is just a mood for me. Short and sweet, it's like dipping your ears in honey. The production is great, the instrumentation with which feels sparse but never boring, leaves his voice and guitar to do the heavy lifting. Just a really relaxing chill album. I think I preferred this to "Five Leaves Left".
like it :)
Every once in a while I like to remind myself I do like folk music that isn't annoyingly drawn out and placid.
Easy day when it’s a Nick Drake day.
Great album. It was almost a 5. I think it would have been a 5 if I had listened to this one in the right mood. I'm a big fan of Alexi Murdoch and heard how heavily he was influenced by Nick Drake in this album. It's cool to discover the foundation to an artist I like, because now I have another one :D
A really nice album for a Sunday morning; soft and introspective; also cool cover, what is up with that.
Ethereal as fuck, very intereting
Mellow and relaxing
Love the stripped down sounds, tragic ending its sad that he found more success after he passed.
I can’t believe this was only 28 minutes and yet it felt like a complex listening experience. Love the simplicity of the arrangement, the lyricism and Drake’s voice.
3.5 stars rounded up.
Better than I remembered it being.
Strong album from Nick Drake with near every track a Standout.
sounds like modern folk/indie rock. I enjoy it, but not something I'd seek out.
Happy to hear another Nick Drake album :’) a really beautiful start to my weekend. No particular favorites since it’s so short, but I do like the lyrics from Place to Be and Road!
Another nice little album from Nick Drake.
Lovely stuff.
Introspective
Acoustic
This reminded me a lot of Cat Stevens, maybe with a smidge of Bob Dylan. It was honestly a very calm, beautifully played set of songs that really drew me in at the start and didn’t let me go. Unless you’re listening intently (which I was not doing the entire time) the songs can definitely blend together. But they’re so well played and written that it doesn’t matter. The melancholy of it all comes through and, while sad and dark at times, is enthralling. I would love to hear the rest of his discography. What a treat. 4 stars. Standout tracks: Pink Moon, Place to Be, Horn, Things Behind the Sun, Know, Parasite, From the Morning
Flowing and rolling. Beautiful and timeless. Resting somewhere between sadness and relief. It’s like sleeping in and waking up to a rainy day coffee cup morning after a long night of difficult conversation.
Had never heard of this album and really loved it. Wonderful writing.
I actually really enjoyed this album, as simple as it was. Gave me Garden State vibes.
6/11, 55%
Beautiful listen, very introspective and stripped down. Lyricism was fantastic, I'll need to listen a few more times to absorb everything. Great album.
4-
nice music
That was great, never heard of him before
1. 4.2 2. 4.4 3. 3.8 4. 3.8 5. 4.1 6. 3.6 7. 4.3 8. 3.7 9. 4 10. 4 11. 4
This is another wonderful example of a timeless album. It really sounds like it could be from the mid 2000s
Never listened to this full album - but I LOVE the song Pink Moon. The rest of the album was also enjoyable, but didn't have the same draw as Pink Moon.
I absolutely loved the simplicity of the acoustic guitar and vocal. The album just made me happy.
Accustic Guitar heavy, reminiscent of Johnny cash or Eddie Vedder
Very good folk album.
Would launch a thousand copycats 40 years later.
Good stuff. Would listen again.
What a shame that Nick lost his battle with depression. Especially before he saw his music widely accepted.
Oh, this is a great album - not one that's new to me. It's short, but its 11 tracks are great, mostly just Drake and his guitar. Quite a melancholy album.
It's impressive what kind of soundscape can be created by one man and a guitar (and a bit of piano). Beautiful
7.5/10 First Nick Drake I’ve ever knowingly heard, aware of his reputation Really nice this - spare production, good guitar, excellent voice This is how you do an album that does not hugely vary in style - make it good, short, and don’t outstay your welcome Really sets a mood, liked it quite a bit Best: Parasite
Crazy how this sounds like a late 90's/early 2000's alternative album (like something Elliot Smith would put out). Shows how this album was ultra ahead of it's time. Near-perfect instrumentals on this one and the only drawbacks were a few parts where I felt the vocals didn't mesh with the instrumentals.
Very sombre.
It was ok
So poignant and intimate. I don't understand how this wasn't a success when he was still alive, but I'm glad we now appreciate him and his work.
His voice takes a bit of getting used to but after that excellent
Little gem. Very efficient
Just a thoroughly lovely album. Nick Drake is a singular tragic figure in an industry full of them. These songs are heart on sleeve and they honestly could have been written yesterday. It’s kind of no wonder he went more or less unnoticed during his time. I have and will listen to this album on a plane, in the rain, in a box and with a fox. Excellent.
Excellent
Just as enjoyable as the previous record, Bryter Layter. Definitely plan on revisiting just as I have with the aforementioned album. Not much else to say about Nick and his work. Pretty songs that make me feel both happy and sad at the same time.
Really enjoyed this album!
Favourite song - Pink moon
This record is entirely too short. As a contemporary of Paul Simon I wonder what Nick would have got up to in the 80s and beyond. similar to Rufus I sometimes dont know what Nick's talking about, but i feel more curious instead of talked over.
Not quite as good as the other two Nick Drake albums. Also criminally short. Will probably put all three albums together in a playlist thoigh, because Nick Drake is quite good.
Fantastic stuff here, will need to digest the lyrics a bit more. This is closer to a 4.5 than a 4.
Just a guy and his guitar. An excellent album for a rainy day or Sunday morning. Nick's dulcet voice and mellow guitar playing makes for a somber album.
It was alright, not as good as his first album in my opinion. Nothing that stood out quite as much.
Beautiful. Songwriting is so deep and sad, absolutely loved it. The backing sounds very similar in every song but it's very relaxing and pleasant. The airy vocals fit perfectly for every song. I really liked it, although I understand why some people might dislike it or find it boring. 7.8/10
Something I like about this list is that it shows me stuff I never would have paid any mind to had I come across it on my own. Really great easy listening. Solo road trip music. Pink Moon and Free Ride particularly were my favourites. My only gripe is that his voice took a bit for me to appreciate.
When we got Bryter Layter I was wondering if Pink Moon would show up. And here it is! Not as good as Bryter Layter but there is a lot of good stuff on here. The title track sticks with me especially. Love his voice
I and a gazillion coffee shops have dried this guy's memory up, I'm afraid. Sugared up his heroin veins, then simmered down to pumpkin spice syrup. Sorry that I can't get past that on a relisten.
Really solid album and a few songs that have been saved. Best song - pink moon
Can't believe I'd never heard this -- loved it. I agree with something I read about it that I wouldn't want it to be longer, but I already went back and listened several times. Giving it a 4 but over time could see it going up
did this one out of order as I didn't listen to it when first revealed. It's my third Nick Drake album. And like the first two...I really enjoyed it.
Revisit
It’s a very chill album, I liked the instrumentals. No individual track stood out, but I really liked the vibe of it… I think it will need another listen. 4/5
Cool.
Beautiful acoustic album.
Sparse and lonely halfsung, half sighed tunes of longing. My poor dude needed some bandmates. Still quite lovely. A Bondy reminds me of him.
Several great tracks never heard before. Would welcome more of Nick Drake in the future
One of my favorites of Nick Drake's.
Very melancholic- need to be in the right mood to listen to this but with each play the songs resonate and bring a strange warmth and familiarity.
all the songs sounded the same, but it was a nice chill vibe
This is the best Nick Drake album and deserves placement in this book. Any other Nick Drake albums can be left out. I enjoy parts of this album but it's very sleepy and "sameness" tends to set in for me after a while. He's a very talented songwriter and his music has a lot of positive attributes, plus his voice has never bothered me. Straight acoustic music and his lyricism is not my bag, but I appreciate this is a great album.
Shouldn’t have listened while doing dishes. I do like it and think it’s pensive and English folky mood would be great for a rainy drive
Enjoyed, some feelings of trepidation, recognized first song. Like ‘road’ best
Interesting
👍👍
Very enjoyable as background music. The titular song is an old favorite. When taking into account the background of the artist, it gives you an entirely new outlook on the music and his writing. Haunting. Very similar to JCF. Nick Drake even does a cover of Blues Run the Game.
Reminds me of Collin Hay’s solo projects. Easy listening, good melodies.
If Jack Johnson was slower and sadder.
Really solid folk/indie album. Such great emotion communicated only via acoustic guitar. I'm very impressed for a second time with this artist. Not quite as amazing as the first, but a great album regardless. Fav tracks: Place To Be, Things Behind The Sun, Know
Good sad music. Great for a rainy day
This album opens with two very strong tracks. There is elegance in the "simplicity" of just acoustic guitar and vocals in many of the songs. I've tried learning Nick Drake songs and he makes it seem deceptively easy but I find that many of his melodies with his playing are complex. A hypnotic/beautiful singer songwriter record. I may prefer "Five Leaves Left" but with this guy, I think it's whatever you hear first that leaves the best impression. Definitely a must listen to artist.
Never gets old and almost always turns on new listeners
A really nice chill album. Definitely sounds like more modern folk artists like Amos Lee
Very smooth and relaxing. Great for morning routine. I’m surprised this is from the 70s. It feels very John Mayer.
Recognized from Garden State soundtrack. Cool, acoustic
I loved this album. I can’t believe I had never even heard of Nick Drake. I could listen to this for weeks! What a lovely new year surprise!
Schade
Favorite Songs: Place to be Road Things Behind the sun Gives me some Jack Johnson vibes. Calm guitar songs and calm singing but not boring.
I wasn’t sure about this one at first but then it clicked for me. This is a beautiful album. It’s not something I would listen to often so that pushes it towards the 4 for me over a 5. But really touched me. I liked it
Nice, the guitar was sometimes hurting my ears, but overall nice chilling songs
Dude. This guy is awesome!
It’s good
Quite enjoyed this one
Very nice
fantastic album. never heard of him before and was pleasantly surprised
This was a great album by an artist I’d never heard of before and in a genre I don’t often listen to. I get the sense there’s a significance to it given how good it sounds and when it came out, but I’m not familiar enough with the genre to identify its influence.
Haunting and beautiful but it does get same-y.
Quite unique solo guitar work.
Pleasant guitars.
7/10. Enjoyed "Pink Moon" and "Place To Be"
Great acoustic guitar paired well with vocals
I had forgotten how many Nick Drake's we'd already had but I have decided this is my favourite. What a soothing peaceful album. Love his voice
Definitely the best Nick Drake we've had. It's really good. However, I don't love his voice, it doesn't click with me. Regardless, it's definitely got great lyrics, lovely guitar and all.
Solid, low-key.
Classic. This guy has been ripped off by so many people.
Really sets a chill mood. Love it
Good album, not every day listening but this would hit great on a snowy or rainy morning with a fresh cup of coffee
I wish I liked this more
One of the best surprises of the project so far. I’ve heard of Drake, mostly as an influence to so many modern artists I love. I was excited to listen to this one and it did not disappoint. Short and sweet, dark, raw, naked, beautiful. In a rush to have to review this one, I only got 1 listen. I have a feeling I might regret not this 5 stars a few years from now. 8.9/10
Great.
It’s absolutely beautiful wow. Now I know who Nick Drake is. He’s a wonderful singer songwriter
Maybe the best of the Drake’s.
I like this
nice, my style.
Had a previous Nick Drake album so kinda looking forward to this one - see what it brings. Yeah I really loved this, so chill and dreamy I could listen to his voice forever. Glad I found him through this site tbh. Preferred this to the last one I listened to .
Songwriting is great, haunting
Liked the guitar and the tone of the singing. Drake's life story is very sad and reading that along with the album was impactful.
Short and depressing album, but I liked the songs. Definitely changes the vibe, man on guitar for all of it I think Didn’t really listen to the lyrics as much as I should have but good melodies in there even if it’s sad 3/4****
Lovely folk album, listened to a lot of Nick Drake at school but never the album the whole way through. Very beautiful. Died so young :(
OG sad boi <3 Fav: Things Behind the Sun
Beautiful short folk album
good background music - chill
Gemütliche Gitarrenmusik
Relaxing folk songs. I like some of those.
He’s so close to the mic, I love it
beautiful
Feels warm and nostalgic to revisit this. It's still great. So many albums by men, though.
When singer-songwriters get it right it's rather nice. Such lovely and interesting guitar throughout, although the second half of the album has some weaker songs. Iconic album cover. Falls into the same traps that most singer-songwriters do as it becomes a bit samey, but it's a sound I enjoy so its forgivable. Fav Track: Place to be A few skippable songs so a light 4/5
Listening to this album right after finishing listening to Javelin by Sufjan Stevens is some sort of cruel and terrific fate. This is the most I've contemplated over pieces of music for a while. Intoxicating guitar plucking and lingering poetry over whispery vocals that really left me awed. Drake captures an intimacy and emotional capacity that few have achieved in quite the same way. Every track stands individually as true and beautiful. A great album! Four and a half. Fave track: Pink Moon
Color me VERY surprised by how much I liked this album. I’ve never heard of Nick Drake or this album. You could tell me that this album was released any of the past 50 years and I would never doubt you. It’s simple, raw, timeless music. It’s not enough to completely blow me away, but I have no doubt I’ll come back to listen again. Highlight: Place to Be
It was pretty good. Like'd the type of music.
Very surprised I've never heard of this artist. The second track, "Road," immediately jumped out at me. Quite moody, guitar is fantastic, and a mysterious voice. Especially on "things behind the sun" This really sparks an interest in giving this album another few listens. Seems like there's a lot of hidden details and an exciting rabbit hole to dive in :)
Never clicked with this, but it could be really great
Starting Vibes have me feeling like drinking a blue slushy behind the 7-11 at 2am waiting for better days to come with the company of your local acoustic guitar wielding 40 year old failed English professor as he explains to me what it feels to yearn for place from long ago that no longer exists and can never return to. When we hit the middle I feel as if the failed English professor is taking me to the park near by, insisting that he show A spot away from lights to see the stars, it’s a little bumpy on the way and I’m not shore if it will be worth it but my gut fights off my small fears. In the end, the spot wasn’t perfect, things changed, the light still reached and I only saw a few stars but it didn’t matter the feeling of the place still contains the joy and magic from when it was given purpose. And before I knew it professor is gone leaving nothing but a pit in your gut from the trip I tangled myself into but it is a good feeling pit. (4.1-5) album is short and is good to listen to in the dark, kind of reminds me of Song by Leonard Cohan but this feels more studio apartment then small music hall if know what I mean.
Initial thoughts: Never heard of this guy. Apparently he's like a 70's staple???? Final thoughts: Wow. Simplicity at it's finest. If I found this album in my 'depresso more espresso' days, this album wouldve fucked me up. Or realistically I would be listening to this as much as I listened to The Smith's. tbh I had it in the background and it was kinda generic folk/songwriter kind of things. But the guitar riff halfway in "Things Behind The Sun" pulled me out of what I was doing, and I know it warranted a careful listen. At a runtime of 28 minutes, easy peasy. After two full listens, wow. Makes me want to take a trip up a hill barefoot with nothing but my guitar.
Pink moon is very calm like a fall drive. Short and sweet. Place to be is very smooth and the acoustic guitar is great compliment to the rest of the song. Road is cool very folky, I think the first two were better but it is still good. Which will had the same great vibe as the first two songs. Sounded like the opening scene of a movie. Horn was only a little over a minute long and definitely displayed the the guitar a little more softly. Great just felt like filler. Things behind the sun felt like a more camp fire type of song and i really loved its vibe. This is probably my favorite so far. Know was another filler feeling song that sounded kinda poorly produced. This is my least favorite so far. Parasite feels a little darker but has a pretty simple melody. Free ride sounds pretty cool but it doesn’t feel as well thought out as some of the other songs. Harvest breed is a lot like know to me just not great. From the morning brought back the great vibe from the first half and just helped me like this album again. Overall this album was pretty solid with some great songs. I did feel however, that the second half was lacking the things that made the first half almost perfect. 8.2/10
01. Pink Moon (5) 02. Place To Be* (4) 03. Road* (4) 04. Which Will (4) 05. Horn* (3) 06. Things Behind The Sun (5) 07. Know* (3) 08. Parasite* (4) 09. Free Ride* (3) 10. Harvest Breed* (3) 11. From The Morning (4) 42/55 76.36% Definitely worthy of more listens.
Nice easy acoustic recording. Easy to listen too nice voice.
Kinda depressing, but it is a style of music that I like.
Amazing guitar. Perfect for a rainy day or a lazy morning.
Great use of guitar, hard to pinpoint the genre, but it’s good for idle listening Nick Drake has a soothing voice, doesn’t hold out notes for too long. Shouldn’t use an app to find music but here we are lmao! After looking into the history of Nick Drake I’m going to have to give this one a deeper listen, especially if it speaks to the unfortunate headspace he was in at the time. This being my first album is a lil discouraging but we move I guess.
nice..
Super chill, easy listening. Reminds me of Alexi Murdoch
themoon isn't pink idk wtf he talkin about
Short, sad, beautiful
Autumnal af
Car, first listen, not single sitting, FT: Place to Be
Super chill acoustic
RIP Nick
Mad chill
Raw
Great music to brew Kombucha to
Really good! Very simple, but that works in its benefit
Jättemysigt!! Riktigt bra låtar och texter. Ett enormt mysigt album helt enkelt. Rätt repetitivt men fungerar ändå. Favisar kanske: Pink moon, Road, Know, Free Ride
already listened to it, very good, very sad
Like sitting by a warm fire, this album washes over you
Quiet a few decent songs. Relaxing, acoustic. Good vocalist. IIRC, first song I'd heard was from Garden State soundtrack?
suavecito y precioso.
It’s classic I suppose, and rightly so.
I feel comfortable and very relaxed listening to this album.
Good background music or a chill out session
Musique douce
Average folk but one start added for the Celtic bits.
Is this the guy who sings Hotline Bling?
Such a shame this guy didn't get the recognition he deserved back in the day.
Comforting and pretty, sad and mournful. It feels much newer than it actually is, but I think this kind of acoustic guitar-driven folk music is just simply timeless. This is an album that would go down a treat on a long walk on a cold winter's day, just giving myself time to reflect and reminisce. It didn't really work for me today on this summer day but I will come back to it. Favourite: Place To Be
I enjoyed this a lot! The guitar work is immaculate and there's a certain quality to Nick's voice that makes him very easy to understand and listen to. At 28 minutes it's a good length for a collection of music like this, where you're never really tempted to tune out to what he's saying.
Beautiful
Makes me want to sit on a porch with a cup of coffee and watch the sun rise
this album made me feel calm. I liked the musicality and simplicity of it. Moderately forgettable from todays listens.
I love how consistent the album is. Good stuff.
