Pink Moon

Drake's less jazzy here and thus less to my taste, but the guitar work is still very good. Pink Moon is packed despite its minimalism, proof that songs can be short without being fragments.

So soft and smooth, it's really a feat to make 2 elements - guitar and voice - hold so much weight. Nice quiet listen.

I'm not sure if I prefer spare Nick Drake or Nick Drake with arrangements but I do know that this is the album of his that I have listened to the most, and that counts for something.

Super chill and nice classic Nick Drake. I think I prefer the stripped down acoustic singer-songwriter Nick Drake as a whole.

Classic acoustic folk music. You'd recognize it from any number of folkies movie soundtracks, but I couldn't have told you who sung it. Excellent album.

Depressing but comfy

Reminds me of a 70s Jack Johnson vibe. I really have a distaste for this type of music, I find it so boring and uninspired. Just really not for me so I gotta rate this one low.

Sort of folk/indie creation, could see how this album got things going for the indie scene. Would listen to again.

Too boriiiing

Really heartfelt, really creative, really showcases some legit talent. A lot of the songs are similar, though. At one point, I thought to myself, "Hey, this is that one song," but it wasn't - I was thinking of another song of his, and it took about a minute of listening to confirm they were different. WOW, simply wow, it'll be difficult to find the words that are deserving enough to describe this album but I'll do my best. This was my first time listening to Pink Moon and it's the first I'd had heard of Nick Drake and almost immediately from the first chords I heard oof of the first track onbthe album I was instantly impressed and surprised, by the end of the first track I had seriously doubted my musical credentials and how I have gone this long in life not having come across such a talented musician. There is a wondrousness and melancholy to this album that touches on some larger sense of sadness while the melody has this wisfulness and lightness to it complimenting the somewhat complicated nature of the sentiment behind the lyrics. This is album is a must for anyone.

I really liked this album. It's probably getting a higher rating because I had never heard it before and it out-performed my expectations for it. It's simple and authentic. Well done, Mr. Drake.

Intemporal

A stark, beautiful record from an artist we lost way too soon. A true, singer-songwriter format that focuses on his brilliant songwriting with minimal instruments and his fragile, yet emotional vocal style. Essential listen, especially if you're a fan of Elliot Smith.

Personally not a fan of the vocal pitch matching the instrument pitch and the some of the melodies/riffs were unpleasantly basic. I'm sure it was meaningful in it's hay day but I'm quite possibly spoiled by the perfection of modern music this album lacks.

This is the album that made me falsely expect (and, perhaps, wish) every folk album to just be someone singing with a guitar*. Using this album as any kind of point for comparison is unfair, really. It’s just a one-of-a-kind album *There are about four measures of piano on the first track.

Expectations were high for this album, but they were not completely met. I prefer Bryter Layter! It's in between a 3 and a 4 for me, but I will give it a 4 because my group-mate already gave a 3.

Nick Drake is like a shadowy, mystery musician that made a few great albums. I quite like this album too.

this brought out the guitar nonce in me. usually folk artists bore the shit out of me but i really enjoyed this.

Nick Drake is a pervert. That just needed to be said. In regards to Pink Moon, I'm not really kind of sicko who immediately thinks of a young boy's pert bum sticking up in the air for me to insert my meaty dong into and any of you who thought that should be ashamed.

It's a little bit dull and lifeless. Doesn't exactly evoke any emotions in me. The odd track is fine on the soundtrack to a film, but a full album plodding along like thing is a bit uninteresting.

Acoustic-y singer song-writers aren't usually my thing, it really needs to be something special to grab my attention. Five Leaves Left, in all its breathless beauty, is such an album. For me, Pink Moon is not such an album. It's just too stripped back, too stark, frankly too dull. Drake's guitar playing is still fantastic but with the warmth of playing of the Five Leaves Left era completely absent, it leaves me cold. The tortured genuis, who may or may not have killed himself, will always be a tale that sells units. I do wonder if this album would simply be considered a side note in his career, a glorified demo, if he had lived to a ripe old age. It seems to me that in his passing, this album has been elevated from a career misstep to the last will and testament of a broken soul. He deserves to be remembered for better.

An incredibly intimate follow up to the often over orchestrated Bryter Later, a beautiful mind laid bare and fragile.

The only Drake album I actually honestly like, because it's just him and a guitar (plus a dash of piano on the title track).

I love this album. Both mysterious and beautiful; raw and almost uncomfortably dry with Nick's vocals right up in your face. Almost ironically the minimalist nature of this album makes me pay more attention to it than many "big" sounding records. Something about the chords and/or the tuning he used on these songs (just listen to the first/title track) are so unique (yet the simplicity occasionally lends itself to little chill moments (e.g. piano melody in "Pink Moon" which is also - I think - the only overdub on the album). Maybe not for everyone but the haunting melodic nature of this (and maybe combined with the very short running time) makes this an alltime favourite of mine. 9/10 5 stars.

Amazing. So many brilliant songs got me into acoustic fingerpicking.

A perfect example of music that is both beautiful and sad at the same time. For those that followed the Nick Drake story in a chronological manner, this, the last Nick Drake release is a significant departure. It is stark and focused inward. It is very short, but beautifully effective, with vocals frequently in a whisper.

I liked this one, especially the (I assume) finger picking guitar style. Soft and contemplative lyrics. Sounds contemporary despite being 50 years old.

Some nice acoustic songs here but I was not wowed by anything I heard. I’m guessing this was pretty influential on lots of indie folk artists which so why it’s here.

I don’t really ‘get’ this. The songs don’t speak to me and the music doesn’t grab me at all. Sounds like someone practicing guitar and humming along at one point (Know).

I tried to listen to this without thinking too much about the Nick Drake backstory. But it runs heavy throughout the album. Which all makes for a compelling listen. The song structures are wonderful. The recording is almost in demo form. Rather than wonder what might have been, I think it's best to appreciate this album as a snapshot of the talent.

Nick Drake is absolutely captivating. His voice commands attention and his songwriting is wistful, melancholic, and deeply moving. His short career, lack of a public persona, and tragically short life lend an air of mystery to him. He was not appreciated in this time but has ascended to the upper echelons of British folk. I’ve been listening to him for quite a while now and he still sounds as crisp and relevant as ever.

I don't think I know Nick Drake, but the album cover isn't promising. Oh wait, the opening notes of the opening/title track are immediately familiar, so I guess I do. Pink Moon is a great song, though up until now I never knew what he was saying. It just sounds great. And the songs keep coming, sounding great, sad but great. This is a beautiful album. I can't believe it is from 1972. It sounds timeless. I'm glad I listened and will again. Absolutely belongs on this list. Favorites: Pink Moon, Place to Be, Horn, From the Morning. Also all the other songs.

With an album cover like that, I expected it to be a grandiose or at least an adventurous folk album. But it's not. It's a sparsely produced folk album with only a guitar and (great) vocals that runs for less than 30 minutes. And while I wasn't really drawn that much with this minimalist approach (the fact that I'm not a fan of folk compounded this), I can definitely say that it has depth. It's dark, melancholic, and just sad especially when you know the background. I don't mind revisiting this one, but as of now, it's safe to say that I find the experience a decent one.

I recognise the the album cover, it’s quirky but good. I think I’ve herd of the name before… The album starts off with the title track it’s an okay folk track with an odd chorus. Place to be is slightly better I prefer the guitars on here. Then is road I like both parts if this song lyrically and the fingerpicking is nice. Which will is a good song it is repetitive with every song starting with the same line but it’s alright. Horn is a nice instrumental it fits well on the album but I don’t love it. Things behind the sun is so far the album’s best song! The lyrics are good, so are the lyrics and the vocals are the best so far. Know has some nice guitar work and the humming works well. There’s only a few lyrics and they come on really late so I think it would’ve been a better album opener. Parasite is another favourite of mine on here I like the build up on this song. And the line “ for I am the parasite of this town” has to be a favourite lyric. Like all these songs I like the lyrics and the instrumentals in free ride but I don’t like the way he sings here. Harvest breed felt way too short but I liked it. From the morning is nice it works well as the album’s closer. It’s also a pretty beautiful sendoff. I liked the album but I think that I respected it more than I enjoyed it. The album’s really, I mean really short! But all the songs have some beauty to them, and while I’am not a big fan of his vocals I would rather them then any modern mumble rapper or over produced pop star.

Brilliant musician who died way too young. I've owned all his albums since they were released and he is in the first rank.

Lirycally uninspiring, musically limited, vocally mediocre, Pink Moon is either an acquired taste or one of the "you had to be there" type albums.

Wasn't dissapointing, but there was no standing ovation either. A bunch of calm ballads to fill the void of silence. Minimalistic compositions and a light-hearted voice made an enjoyable combination. A really intimate record, which I might find more appealing played on a cold winter night with a mug of mulled wine.

It is a good album. However, it is too flat, all songs sound the same. I liked it but I completely understand when people fall asleep halfway through the album... and it is just a 28min album...

I think I may need to revisit this one later based on so many others' stellar reviews. It seemed like standard singer-songwriter fare, but probably deserves a second listen.

Astonishing what one can do with just an acoustic guitar and some storytelling, no mixing, no backing instruments, no extravagances. With the right audience. I can see the potential of this album, although it didn't quite resonate with me.

This is cool, ambient and original sounding music. You can listen to it absorb the lyrics, or have it on the background - it works both ways. A thoughtful, intelligent musician with his own sound. I can see why this belongs in the 1001 albums….

Utterly brilliant. I remember exactly where I was when I first heard Nick Drake: Gatwick Airport HMV. I went straight to the counter and said 'Who's this, it sounds a bit like John Martyn?' The sales assistant said 'It's Nick Drake, he was a friend of John Martyn'. I bought the album and I've been a fan ever since. This is his masterwork. 6 stars.

As someone who has battled with depression on and off for most of my life, Nick Drake is one artist who I decided to avoid. His death was such a tragedy and the fact that his music was largely unsung during his lifetime is such a shame. So when I played this yesterday, I was expecting to come away crying like I do when I listen to Elliot Smith but instead I was struck by how beautiful Pink Moon, and what a lose it is to me that I had never given it a proper listen before. Contrary to my preconceptions this is a joyous album. I played it this morning on our lounge room speakers unsure if it was the right soundtrack to a restless Saturday morning. My wife said she enjoyed it and that it wasn't what she was expecting either. My daughter, just said, "this is really nice, I like this music". They both have great taste.

It's folk music. I did not care for it. Not sure why this made the list. No need to listen to it.

Very bare bones, but very haunting and well made. I think this album was perfect for today, it really struck a nerve with me. Not sure how I might feel about it in a few weeks, months, etc but as of right now I really appreciate it.

I just have a problem with "Sad Bastard" music. If it doesn't have a strong blues guitar behind the lyrics then it just sounds whiney as shit. It wasn't for me and I could not tell you if it belongs on the list or not.

Just a damn good singer songwriter album. One of those album that makes you wonder why its not more well known.

Just a dude mumbling to his guitar. Liked the playing but not really feeling the vocals or the song writing. Probably one of those artists that if you discover them yourself you think they are great, but if someone tells you to listen to them you're not impressed.

3.5 stars I enjoyed this more than the previous Nick Drake album listed. This sounds more contemporary to me and has an alt folk feel.

I am not truly familiar with Nick Drake, even though I do have WAY TO BLUE - AN INTRODUCTION TO NICK DRAKE, a 1994 compilation which I’ve only listened to a couple of times and found it was not my cup of tea. With PINK MOON, I found Nick Drake with a very strong voice with clean, crisp guitar playing. I like PINK MOON a little better than WAY TO BLUE, however overall, this is still not my cup of tea. I do see the appeal of Nick for people. In 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, I see and find it interesting that Nick Drake’s full discography is included in the book which includes FIVE LEAVES LEFT (1969) # 0150 and BRYTER LAYTER (1970) # 0191, so I am not sure hiw I feel about listening to these other albums when they appear. A warm hug of an album that flashes in and out of existence hardly before it gets started. What makes this short, sweet LP work is the rawness of Drake's vocals and performance - the rasping of guitar strings silhouetted against his dulcet vox makes it feel as you've stumbled upon his performance umprompted.

The third Nick Drake album! This I feel has the best sound of the three. It has a laser focus on nick's guitar work and his voice. The lyrics are more artistic and the songs in general more expressive. Things Behind The Sun for me is a standout track. Free Ride is another great example of this growth in sonic style.

Would listen again for chill songs

Listened to this album a while back and was really into it. Gave it another chance today and enjoyed it. Didn’t blow me away or anything but definitely something I’ll revisit.

I really enjoyed this one! The whole album is great and feels complete despite its short length. The production and arrangements could not be simpler with most songs just featuring an acoustic guitar and vocals; however, this is not a drawback as it feels more intimate and timeless because of this stylistic choice. With this type of approach to a recording, my enjoyment of the songs typically rely on how much I can tolerate the artist's voice, and I feel that Nick Drake did a fantastic job enhancing his dark lyrics with his strong vocal performance. This is definitely one I will throw on again in the future (feels like a nice winter or rainy day album), and I can see myself diving deeper into Drake's catalog after this (I am surprised I have never heard of him). 4/5. NOTE: I was shocked to find out that he died only a couple of years after this album at the young age of 26 (!). After knowing this, it does feel like I am listening to a lost soul through his creation which makes it a bit more tragic. I am happy he left such a great impression before leaving this world with this beautiful set of tracks.

I never listened to Nick Drake before and his voice is really powerful. I really didn't get all the hype for this album, but I'm could see its importance during the last song when I realized that I was fully immersed in his voice. A small piece of immersive art on this list! Great experience!

Used to listen to this album a lot in high school/college. Interesting dynamic and backstory to the album, overall the nostalgia for it pushes it to 4/5 stars for me.

I really enjoyed this album. But I didn't think there was really any standouts in particular.

It was allright, the guitar work was really good. Open tuning was really good. His voice is what didn't make it for me. Tolerable, probably wouldn't listen again. Kind of like a wimpy version of Leo Kotke. Sort of sad bastard music, not a single song that was an earworm for me.

BEST OF GENTLE

When I first saw this album come up, I thought it would be an easy poo-poo-ing. Turns out this album is pure folk music, and the title track is one that I'd heard and rather liked (thanks to the cultural miracle of advertising). The entire album is pleasantly relaxing, and I'd definitely listen again. Easy 4 stars.

I've liked both of the Nick Drake albums (this one being the second) that I've heard, though I don't have a lot to say about them. He's a wonderful songwriter, both simple and subtle in his way 4/5

A sad, beautiful album. Like Nick's life it's all too short at just 31 minutes bit with enough emotional impact to fill most box sets. Each song has a restrained beauty and the guitar playing is achingly gorgeous. 5 big 🌟

Delicate

Pink Moon is the third and final studio album by Nick Drake before he took his own life. The folky songs are performed without backing band (only vocals, guitar and piano by Drake). This makes it a very personal and a bit sad with all the unfilled space and silence in production. It results in fabulous songs.

Bit like Jeff Buckley

This album really grew on me upon multiple listens. The haunting vocals and stripped down to the bone production made this album extremely sad to listen to but also very enjoyable. I don’t have a favorite song because I just like the sound of the album in general

Had to abandon halfway through

The subtle imperfections of his perfect guitar playing gives the record soul and structure that makes the addition of any other instruments superfluous. His ability to create a soundscape with one instrument is raw talent.

There are some aspects of the music that I really like. But in the end it simply isn't enough for me. Not intense enough, not varied enough, not interesting enough, not quite beautiful enough (not too far off either though).

One man and his acoustic guitar.. not bad but not soothing I will listen to again

This album came from a guy who killed himself 2 years after recording it. You are listening to a guy who looked around and despised capitalism and comercialisation, so maybe this album wasn't intended to be heard. And if you did, that's awesome, and an incredible line of events that led you to this moment, listening to a record some guy made 60 years ago in two nights just for himself.

No conocia al artista. La primera impresión es que tiene una onda Bob Dylan, muy de canciones de protesta post-hippies. Todas las canciones suenan bastante similar. Y el tono de la voz + guitarra un poco te duerme jaja. La cancion "Know" es la mas diferente de todas, suena como una especie de blues folk.

Nick Drake is often referred to as a folk artist, but he is a folk artist the way that Joni Mitchell is a folk artist, which is to say, not so much. Baroque acoustic pop comes much closer. His melodies and arrangement have a lulling quality. The way he often uses a pedal point contributes to a droning quality (this is a natural consequence of the non-standard tunings he uses). He also uses intricate, repetitive rhythms in his arrangements to trance-like effect. His melodies are unusual in that they aren't what the songs are built around; instead, they are woven into and are almost an extension of the arrangements. The final element is Drake's voice itself, which is intimate and confessional, insinuating instead of demanding attention. (I've ignored the lyrics, which I know are a huge part of Nick Drake's appeal.) The music on Pink Moon doesn't smack you over the head--it seeps into your consciousness. Unless you reject it outright, it irresistibly lulls you into its rhythms--in that sense, it's the ultimate mood music. It almost feels unfair to evaluate this music in terms of quality--it just is. But I can say that Nick is a competent guitarist, pianist, and arranger, and his singing is perfect for his music. I could complain that not one of the songs on Pink Moon stuck in my head, but that's almost besides the point. What matters here is atmosphere and mood, not earworm choruses. In fact, for what Nick Drake was going for, it's hard to imagine how you could improve on Pink Moon.

This album is great. Dark, melancholy, beautiful. Reminds me a lot of Mark Lanegan's solo work (and come to think about it, I think Nick Drake was mentioned as an influence in Lanegan's autobiography).

An interesting album from an artist I'm not familiar with. The acoustic guitar parts are awesome, and I'm generally a big fan of acoustic rock. The guitar parts are incredible and really the main attraction to this album. His singing style however doesn't do too much for me. It's soothing but it doesn't draw me in to listen closer to the lyrics, or make me want to sing along. I think my main issue is that as an album it feels like it lacks variety. Nick Drake has a style, and he sticks to it. But there isn't much change in tempo, or virtually no change in dynamics from one song to the next so as the album goes on, each song blends into the next one. Only the closing song is really significantly faster than previous ones. This makes it a standout for sure, but I with there was more variety throughout. I feel like I'll probably explore the artist a bit more in the future, but I don't see myself listening to him very often. Though I could also see this album growing on me with each listen. I could definitely see myself trying to learn to play some of these guitar parts. I'd give it 3.5* if allowed. But it just falls short of 4 for me. If it was just instrumental, or had a few more songs mixed in that were purely instrumental I might jump it up. Favorite Songs: Horn, Things beyond the sun.

Fantastic album. Had been a decade or so since I had last heard it.

It might be a little harsh but I just didn't love the songs. I remember listening to his first album a few years back and I fell in love with it. This one not so much. I think it lacks the backing instuments

A lot of my favorite albums are complex and layered. What's so impressive about Nick Drake's albums is that he achieves so many of those same feelings with a much more minimal set of ingredients. That's not say this is simple music, just that he makes everything count. The album kind of pulls you in slowly before it hits you with the feels with "Which Will" and "Things Behind the Sun". I could do without "Know", but overall this album is a great experience.

Pink Moon made me and a bunch of other people want a Volkswagen. Nick Drake made me want to explore folk music. His soft spoken voice and the fret buzz of his acoustic guitar conveys an understated sense of being and its perfect. This album taps into something beneath the surface and it all comes out. If Gustavo Sataolalla, Alexi Murdoch are are able paint pictures with their music, Nick Drake is able to make you feel it. I hear Gustavo in Horn and Alexi in Which Will and so many other songs. There can't be any musicians who've heard Pink Moon and been unaffected. This album and the whole Nick Drake story gets me emotional. An artist that kills himself after releasing two albums to lackluster reviews and thirty years its discovered by the world because of advertising. Unattainable desire. To become famous, to own and possess things you don't need. It’s difficult to point to anything good that’s come out of marketing since it’s inception. Pink Moon and Nick Drake may be the one thing.

This album is amazing each song is very interesting and enjoyable how short it is and I thought that how simple the songs are really added to the music. It's so crazy to me that this album sold less than 5,000 copies. My only complaint the songs kinda sound the same but only just a little bit. love this album 9/10 closer to a 10 than a 9

I've had very little exposure to Nick Drake. (And he to me.) I think the first time I heard him is actually on the Garden State Soundtrack (shoutout to an album that had a big influence on my musical journey - any soundtracks on this list?), and from the start of "Pink Moon" it was immediately familiar because it sounded so much like "One of These Things First" from that album. I enjoy Drake’s style, but I waited until after 9 pm to write this so don’t have much to say about it. Good chill/relaxing background music, though it does get repetitive.

Very vibey and quiet, lots of acoustic guitar and soft singing

Listening to the first couple of tracks, I was quickly drawn in by the hauntingly spare sound, honest lyrics and atypical tunings. Surprised that I hadn't heard of Nick Drake before, I looked him up. What a tragic story of a great talent underappreciated in his time and taken far too soon. I can hear influences of Cat Stevens and Van Morrison in his work, and can hear how his sound may have influenced a whole host of singer/songwriters that followed him. Some of the songs are a little bleak (understandably), but others feel hopeful and celebratory of our (pained) existence. The musicianship is mostly very strong, with his reedy voice well-suited for introspection. I will definitely listen to him more and will seek out his other work. How sad that there is so little of it.

I would listen to this on a rainy day, I like his voice but I get bored by the end of the album.

The opening line of the first song, Pink Moon, sounds like ‘I zaw it written and I zaw it zay.’ Annunciate, bro! Come on! Honestly this really threw me for a loop the first time ‘round. I also thought he might be saying “Zooey written and I Zooey zay” at one point. And I’m like who the hell is Zooey? Then the second song, Place To Be, isn’t that strong, and I was starting to write this album off. But I liked the guitar playing. Was this yet another album with decent music and someone’s voice that knocks it down a star or even ruins it? Turns out no. The first listen I was solidly in the three star camp from a good music, iffy voice perspective. The second listen through had me thinking this is a poor man’s José González. Or that when I’m in the mood for something like this, I’d much rather put James Taylor on. During the third listen of this album, I realized my annunciation and voice hang ups were only on the first two tracks and the rest I liked. All this while appreciating the guitar even more. For instance, I was loving the guitar picking on Which Will. We’ll shit I thought, maybe this is a four star album. On the fourth listen of the album, I turned the lyrics on in AppleMusic and realized he’s saying “I saw it written and I saw it say.” Well now Zooey had revealed herself as a fraud and I got what he’s saying. I like that his tempo fluctuates from time to time. It’s like he lets his mood, in the moment, dictate subtle speed ups or slow downs in a song. Every once in a while it sounds like he misses a beat or skips a note. In the spirit of Bob Ross, I take these as happy little accidents whether they were done on purpose or not. By the fifth time hearing the album, I settled on this being a bourgeois version of the folk singer songwriter genre. Not quite the elitist crust of them all, but a very good representation. It’s going to stay in my library.

I'd heard of Nick Drake for about 15 years now, but somehow never got around to listening. Overwhelmingly emotional album... not really my typical genre, but it left quite the mark.

Bleak and sparse, sad and melancholy. An achingly beautiful album. The more I listen to it, the more I'm drawn in and the more I can't help but love it . Make no mistake, this is a masterpiece.

It was amazing. I didn't know him before, so it was a completely different thing for me. The songs are chill, relaxed and the lyrics can warm every heart. (Also, the album cover is very pretty, look at the colors!)

I was familiar with the first track, and surprised how good the rest of the album is.

I don't think I'm smart enough for this album. The lyrics are basically poetry and the rhythms go way past standard 4/4. Due to Nick Drake being such a loner, he had no one else playing on this work, but he could have been huge if he could have collaborated with others. It's also why I can't rate it highly. Sure, pink moon is good and technically it is all good, but this is a 3.5 or a 7 out of 10. It just needs more and I don't think he had written his opus before he died. This was just a taste.
