Reviews (page 11 of 14)
Knew this sounded familiar and figured it was from some sad movie from the early 2000s. After a lil research came across the VW commercial which is pretty amazing that still resonated 25 years later. Kudos to that ad team. Good listen and I appreciate how simple and raw this was. A tragic life that came through. I’m generally okay with imperfections but the guitar rattling on Know drove me crazy. 3.5
Cute little folk record, that feels very intimate, since we only hear the artist and a guitar. Pink moon ist a great title track. The rest is nice but not outstanding.
Feel like I need to give this another listen- I put it on at work, but based off other reviews, it looks like the lyrical content is important here.
just a guy and his guitar. seems to be an all seasons album
Seichte Liedermacher Songs ohne Höhe und Tiefen.
Mehhh nothing special
Singer songwriter folk rock is not generally my thing, but this grew on me a little more than I expected it to. It’s still going to fall as a pretty standard 2.5/3 stars, I wouldn’t be upset if someone played this, but probably not something I’ll dive back into.
This album has a soft rock sound to it that's ahead of its time. I can understand really liking this album, especially if you connect with Nick but I didn't have that experience.
I thought I finally evaded Nick Drake, only to be flashed with another one of his albums. Thankfully, "Pink Moon" is the last. Many of my friends are surprised at my "disdain" towards Nick Drake, seeing how much I appreciate similar musicians like Elliott Smith. It's not that I hate his music — my brain simply needs something more stimulating. In all honesty, Elliott bleeds through his writing, while Nick almost feels underwhelming on purpose. His tracks lack in dynamic, rhythm and tone. To test my hypothesis, I skipped to three different parts of the album and listened to a ten second snippet. If you told me it was the same song, I would've believed you. I'm sure Nick's talented and brilliant in his own right, but he's just not for me at the moment.
there's lovely guitar sound, beautiful lyrics. If I listened to it in 12-13, I'd fall in love with it. but not now
I love the song Pink Moon, likely because of a pringles commercial? the rest of this album is ethereal and dreamy, if maybe a bit boring.
This was our third Nick Drake album, maybe my favorite. Still, after listening through twice, none of the individual songs stuck with me. Like a 3.5.
Good listen
The sounds of these 90s albums is just something different man. Nostalgia maybe I don’t know, but it slaps.
Nick Drake is a name Ive heard of in the past and Ive seen the album cover of Pink Moon, it has always disturbed me a little bit for some reason. I knew absolutely nothing about Nick Drake until listening to this album and Ive found it very interesting. This wasnt an album enjoyed 100% but after reading more about Drake’s life and the meaning of this album Ive come to respect it a lot. His soft tone and the bare music, just a man and his guitar. I wonder if things would’ve panned out differently for him if he ever got that recognition. Listening to the album and staring at album cover for a while it makes a lot more sense to me now. It kind of gives the cover a meaning although I couldnt explain it, it just sits right now. Favorite Songs: Pink Moon, Things Behind The Sun, Free Ride
Interesting folk album, pretty raw. I must revisit it later, I feel I couldn't listen to it as well as I could. 5/10
Chill album, I enjoyed it but it didn't blow me away.
Similarly to Bryter Later, I think I like the story of this album than the actual songs. Bringing just a guitar into a studio after hours because another group had it booked and banging this out in 2 nights is wild. Then bringing the masters personally to the record company and leaving them at reception. I like it, but would need a lot more time with it. Probably a 3.5 for me, but dropping.
I know this is a beloved one but it was a bit boring for me personally,2.5
Þetta var plata sem kom smá á óvart. Þægileg áhlustun en það var samt ekkert sem stóð upp úr. Þarf að setja hana í spilun nokkrum sinnum í viðbót og þá gæti hún hoppað upp úr meðalmennskunni.
Makes me want to buy a Volkswagen. But anyway, its pleasant enough. Like a warm breeze. That being said, a whole album is pretty sleepy. Id love these songs mixed into a Playlist. The whole thing at once is a lullaby
I’d give it a 3.5 if I could.
pretty good! i found it samey and the song horn was pretty annoying but it was overall worth my time. i can see why people adore this one
Bueno
This was ok, more of a chilled vibe
This is now the 3rd album by Nick Drake that I've heard in this project. At least the man stayed true to his style. Unfortunately, I find it pretty boring. The best thing you can say about the music is that it's not offensively annoying. But I wouldn't have missed anything if I'd never heard it. 3/5
aburrido...
point0.
I liked the vibe of this album. It reminded me of Cat Stevens, or other folk bands of recent, which I love. What I think the songs lacked were purpose or, maybe, passion? All in all, a very enjoyable listen. Favorite song: Which Will
The Good: A pink moon, is special! The Bad: A red moon, it turns out, is more special… The Ugly: A green moon… Mr Drake, he was not one of them happy chaps… I had to check to my history for this journey we are on, and it turns out that I have already reviewed one of Mr Drakes’ albums, a glorious 4*, as I was not aware of his work. 4* stars, as I am calculating scores at the moment, means that the album will be included in a list of albums I do want to listen to again… So, the question is, do I want to listen to this album again? The previous album, called Bryter Layter, it had a lovely weird album cover that one can look at for a while before finding out 1 hour has come and gone. This album has similar art-work, that merist an additional score… The real question is: am I ready to have two albums on my list which could, depending on the state of mind of a listener, place sharp objects near ones wrist… Thus, nothing against the album per-say, I will have to give it 3 1/2 which will be downgraded to 3...
*Very chill, sad acoustic music. *This album was recorded the year before Nick Drake OD'd on antidepressants. RATING - 7/10
Not my thing, but ok and a lot better than bob Dylan
1. Pink Moon - 9 A song I've always heard in highlights and adverts but never knew where it was from. Lovely guitar sound and rhythm with solid vocals. Overall a great song. 2. Place to Be - 8 Very similar sounding both instrumentally and vocally to the first track. Really lovely sounding and Drake's vocals here are fantastic. 3. Road - 6 Very much a pass over track. Guitar sounds fine here and the vocals are okay but very rarely present to influence the song in any way and so you're left with 2 minutes of mainly a guitar going up and down the range. 4. Which Will - 7 Song doesn't quite have the same pop to it at the first two but overall it's still a lovely piece of folk music. Unlike the last track, the vocals very much carry the load here. A great performance. 5. Horn - 1 Absolutely completely useless 82 second piece of music. 6. Things Behind the Sun - 10 Breathtaking song. Just a masterpiece in what folk music is both vocally and with how the guitar leads the tone of the song. 7. Know - 3 Really weak song. The entire opening half of the song is practically able to be thrown away. Vocally it's completely uninspiring. 8. Parasite - 8 The guitar sounds absolutely fantastic on this track. Vocally the metaphoric lyrics are very good. Great track. 9. Free Ride - 7 Overall a good sing lyrically, vocally, and instrumentally. Very easy flow with an all around solid sound. 10. Harvest Breed - 6 Not a huge fan of the guitar sound on this track but it's not overall a bad song. Makes me think there could have been more to it if it was built out more with another verse or two. 11. From The Morning - 9 "And now we rise and we are everywhere" is the inscription on Nick Drake's tombstone and one can only hope his sound continues to resonate everywhere. The track is a great sound to end the album on and really highlights Drake's talent in both singing and songwriting. Average Rating: 6.72 1001 Albums Final Rating: 3.36 Rounded Down: 3 Stars
Surprisingly pleasant (for me, as Folk is not my go to) And despite being 50+ years old there is a timelessness about it. It doesn't offer much in terms of variety to my ear, but it is short enough to not present a problem.
Don't get his voice at all
this was pretty i guess but overall forgettable. it didnt feel like it was doing anything all that interesting?
Good guitar playing and a smooth voice. I found it interesting and can understand his appeal, but not sure whether I'll relisten. I'm not a big fan of open strumming folk, so didn't like the songs based around that as much. Solid 3.5 for me. Favorite track: Things Behind The Sun, had a really nice feeling to it!
3.5
3.0 - Ok
Not my style
Hm. I wanted to like this more than I did, I think. I kept listening hoping for something that would justify giving it 3.5, but ultimately nothing captured my attention enough.
Never heard of this guy, though every single album from his discography has surprisingly landed a spot on the list. Back when I listened to Nirvana's "In Utero" I speculated about which artist had the highest percentage of their discography on the list. I came to the realisation shortly afterwards that Amy Winehouse technically had her full discography on the list, even if "Frank" was removed from later editions of the book. Every Nick Drake album remains in every edition of the book, so I guess I've found the objectively best artist on the list if I'm to go by this hyperspecific, reductive reasoning. The guitar performances on this album are very impressive and dynamic. While Drake's vocals don't go the full mile in hooking me it's undeniable that they breathe a great deal of life into the music. This is best shown in "Parasite" - a beautiful song carried by a fantastic instrumental and some very good songwriting. "Pink Moon" and "Place To Be" are also favourites of mine. While not as powerful as the showing on Parasite, both songs have a "buoyancy" to them that I enjoy. "From The Morning" is another good cut and a solid closer. The upbeat instrumental contrasts nicely with the lingering, pensive slump that the album falls into during the latter half. Other songs like "Things Behind The Sun" and "Free Ride" show promise and are undeniably competent, but fail to connect with me. The lo-fi sound also doesn't do much to hook me. The music is solid through and through, which doesn't sell me on the amateurish, laid-back strength of lo-fi. A 28-minute runtime is also kinda pushing it. It feels like the thing concludes before it really gets going. I've never heard of this guy, but in all fairness I hear nothing of folk because it isn't a genre that interests me. Gonna look at the book... Stripped back when compared to his previous album. A point of influence to REM. Has an intimate atmosphere that comes from abandoning mastering and post-production. A tragic final album from a promising musician. Hmm. This guy seems cool - I like his style. Of all the folk albums I've listened to through the list, this one sticks out to me the most aside from Joni Mitchell's "Hejira" - also an album with very strong acoustic guitar performances.
First album was better.
I don't mind listening to a solo singer with only a guitar as accompaniment, but preferably in a live setting at an intimate venue with a few drinks. It's certainly not my ideal choice when I want to engage with recorded media. As talented as Nick Drake may have been, I don't find this form of recorded music anything to get excited about.
An album I wish I had been introduced to much earlier on if only for Place To Be and learning CGCFCE tunings. It’s a bit too minor chord spare or austere in parts, a thing English folk in particular did in the late 60/early 70s, but Drake’s fastball (eephus pitch?) is perfect. As I go on about a bit in my Bryter Later notes, for better or worse, the VW ad plays a big role in the title track for my generation. As such, I lean Place To Be (esp. an alternate recording he did released on the A Day Gone By collection).
én szeretem ezt az egyszálgitáros folkot általában, szóval lehet hogy még visszatérek ide. mindenesetre két hallgatás után nem érintett meg annyira, hogy több legyen hármasnál.
It is pretty but not really my style. I'm not a folk person
This was pleasant. It's the type of album you put on while lounging around a fireplace.
I liked it a lot at first. Then it all sounded the same
Not bad.
3.5
❤️
Fin plate. Tittellåta er best
“Pink Moon” is a great song. Other than that? https://youtu.be/8V_hCqO6UQs?si=766EUVAM33QcViZ8
Tredje plattan med honom. Inte dåligt egentligen men allt låter nästan likadant.
I was disappointed because I thought this was Nice Cave and have never given him a chance. I've definitely heard some of this music in the soundtracks of manic-pixie dream girl movies before. That is about all I can say about it.
The least favourite of his winnings for me.
6.5/10
Most of the songs are great, but the lofi production keeps it from becoming a favorite. Side note: One of the coolest album covers I’ve seen.
It was fine. Pretty boring all in all. But like, fine.
bem melancolico 3 estrelas.
Ok
It was a pretty solid album. Good and calm. No standout tracks, just a bunch of solid ones.
Soothing. More lullaby than folk, Nick Drake is the og Jack Johnson.
Not terrible. Got Repetitive
Really enjoyed this album.
No way near as good as Five Leaves Left, to me - all the songs just sound the same. Maybe worth a relisten?
All Nick Drake to revisit later 3
2.72
not a bad album but honestly, i couldnt even tell when it ended and started autoplaying his song others because everything sounded the same :/
This song is like a very relaxed type of song. Like the type of song youd lisent to while studying in a cafe or something. Im not really into this type of genre so ill rate it a 5.7/10.
I rate Pink moon a 3 star because its not really for me but the gutare is good. I rate Paresite a 3 star because its not really for me but the gutare is good and its like country and country itsnt really for me. I rate From the morning a 3 star because its not really for me but the gutare is good and its like country and country itsnt really for me.
I like this album because it is very calming. It makes me sleepy and feel peaceful.
Why is the album cover so random? "Pink Moon" is pretty good. The guitar and piano are really good. The singing voice is very gentle. I liked "Parasite" because the guitar was played well. The lyrics were also good, but the song is a bit too slow for me. "From The Morning" was also good. It was a bit faster, which I like. I liked this song best. I might recommend this album.
the first song is okay i like how the guitar sounds i dont like his voice though there is not much more to say about this song. the next song is also okay i still like how the guitar sounds and i still dont like his voice this song is still the same as the other one. the last song is the same as the other two songs there is still not much to say all the songs arent very different from each other. overall i dont really like this album i wouldn't recommend it.
Not typically into acoustic music but I really enjoyed the melodies of this album. Very interesting guitar lines.
I suspect a lot of listeners were introduced to Nick Drake when 'Pink Moon' was so perfectly captured in that ad for Volkswagon that ran in the early 2000s. It was my first introduction. Listening to this album years later it's pretty clear that lyrically this album is a bunch of the nonsense the Folk generation was writing in those years. The songs in and of themselves aren't terribly well composed. The only real memorable track is Pink Moon. And had he not cut his life terribly short, would Drake managed to make it into classic status and not relegated to the halls of one-hit-wonder? It's hard to speculate, BUT what I do know is this album is a complete vibe; a perfect listen curled up with a hot bevy on a cold autumn day. It's the vibe, people!
Interesting to listen to. Not the type of music I'm used to listening, but good nonetheless. If you are into slow, calm songs on a classical-guitar, this may be for you. Also under 30 mins long, so a quick listen.
Enjoyed.
Not bad.
Nice sound, if sad and stripped-down. The simplicity gives it an earnestness that's really touching. The lyrics are sometimes very intimate and interesting, but it has a few low moments that really stand out with the short run time.
Vibey, groovy kind old vibe music. Whole album (at least first few songs) all sound the same
Excellent acoustic songwriting, really enjoyed it
not my genre but i can appreciate this is good
3/5, some tracks but most of it sounded the same
Listened to this after listening to Bryter Layter. Pink Moon is a great song but only 2 minutes long. Tasty but not filling. Can we move on from Nick Drake now?
Pretty chill
Kinda chill with it. Solid vibin
Wild cover art. I think I've listened to a lot of artists that have been influenced by Nick Drake and I didn't know it. I liked Horn, Things Behind the Sun, Parasite. Would be nice if there was a little more variety, but this could go either way. How about like 3.5 rounded down.
A chill semi timeless album
Low key. Great songs. Amazing guitarist.
Nick Drake is one of those artists you need to be in a 'mood' to listen to. Sadly, I was not in that mood. Very fine, just not *great*.
No clear cut playlist adds but I still really enjoyed his voice and the albums vibe so that’s oughta count for something
Background music. 5/10
5/10 appreciate the song writing but not really my cup of tea.
Not bad
I find Nick Drake to be really pleasant to listen to, but not specifically something I'd choose to listen to.
chimling and wibing respectful pituus ei tuhlata chillingillä ja wibongilla enempää
Very good but is not matching my mood to the extent that I hate it
I used to listen to this album to fall asleep. Not because it’s boring, it’s just very calming.
Quick album- no real thoughts it was like background music for work lol
This is fine, but as with Jeff Buckley, how revered by critics would this artist be if he hadn’t died so young and tragically? A bit of this goes a long way. Things Behind the Sun is a very nice track. Elizabeth would give this a 4.
The title track is great, but he’s always hit or miss for me.
Ok, sad boy
Heartbreaking story. Music was good! Not necessarily a stand out, But listen to: Place to be Things behind the Sun
The last tales of a man makes this a reflective record and stripped back of only a guitar and his voice. Recommended.
Nick Drake's Pink Moon is the perfect example of less being more. Simple soft guitar strumming underneath simple lyrics can yield the most impact. 3.5/5
Melancholic, good for background, but it's the same exact thing for 30 minutes.
I spent the whole album thinking, “wow this really sounds a lot like a guy who had a song featured on the Garden Sate movie..” only to later google it and and find out that, yes, it was the same guy. This album did not sound like it was from the early 70’s! Had a very modern feel. Reminds me of Mark Kozelek.
I enjoyed it enough but didn’t do anything special for me
I can see why people really like this because it's so stark, raw and emotional. The melancholy feel of the acoustic guitar and his haunting voice are beautiful but also really depressing. But I'm not sure I want to listen to this again. I think I just prefer more upbeat music
This was alright for me but it just didn't match my vibe today. I think the song writing was really good but I'm going to go with a 3 today, a little too melancholy for me.
Una guitarra forta, una lírica potent, un viatge melancòlic, i un àlbum un pel planer.
Not my favourite Nick Drake album, but it’s still good.
This one is pretty sad. Between the lyrics and the minimalist recording seems like he was pretty low. Sort of a tough listen. Nice sounding but not as strong as Bryter Layter.
I really like the first two tracks, but it's kind of a blur after that. Very pretty and ethereal, never unpleasant, but nothing grabbed me, and I kind of wondered whether I got excited and overrated Bryter Layter - I admit I get a little trigger happy with that 5 key sometimes (see Van Halen or Pere Ubu). But I went back and listened, and I stand by my 5 for Bryter Layter - it's a great complete album, and so much more layered and interesting than Pink Moon.
Didn't like the vocal that much
Not bad. Makin it sad for sure.
Original Jeff Buckley?
Love the chill vibe, this is perfect for a rainy day or reading, driving, or crying.
Enjoyed it!
I do love Nick Drake, but all in all this isn't his best album. Pink Moon and Things behind the sun are glorious, and Parasite is pleasant. Know and Harvest Breed are nice vignettes that feel like they could be fleshed out into larger pieces. The sprinkling of piano on Pink Moon makes the song - other tracks are calling out for a bit more instrumentation. It's missing, for example, the strings you hear on Five Leaves Left. A high 3/low 4.
This is the 4th or 5th time I have tried to get into this album, based off of a recommendation and somehow I am still unable to get it. It's not bad. Nice, easy listening, but it just never clicked with me. I am glad that the other two Nick Drake albums were on here, because I really liked them. I would say this is a 3.5
so pretty! feel like there might be something more there for me, i almost connect with it. maybe in a few more listens?
Nick Drake > The Beatles
Good
I think this is my third Nike Drake album so far. This one's his latest, and seems to be his most popular, but it's my least favorite. I think he got a little too comfortable in his coined vocal style. I think it's cool when an artist can carve out their own unique sound, but it definitely feels like a risk. Kinda going out on a limb. But hey, he had an audience, give the people what they want. I guess it's both risky and playing it safe.
Very pleasant to listen to, but not the most dynamic album. It's all in pretty much the same downbeat range. The title track is incredible, of course.
Ganz entspannt aber ohne richtigen Wow-Effekt
this is almost a no skip album and perhaps takes a slight hit for being the proto sound of zach braff's inner monologue
loved the fingerstyle guitar work
Very, very sad music Best Song: Place to Be Rating: 5.0/10 3 Stars
pink moon- 4 place to be- 5 road-5 which will- 5 horn- 5 or 6 things behind the sun- 5 know- 4 parasite- 5 free ride- 4 harvest breed- 5 from the morning- 5
Didn’t think it was possible for a <30 minute album to test my patience.
This is kind of interesting, he's got a bit of a weird, sinister sound. But a good comparison is to "Blue" - Drake is doing the same kind of music, basically just guitar and voice, but he's a best-case B-quality singer, and the songs are nowhere near as fun and catchy. He plays some odd harmonies but a lot of it is pretty drone-y, he hangs on the same thing a lot. Overall it's not unpleasant, but I wouldn't put it on again.
Peaceful folk, reminiscing beside a lake - Soft vocals with guitar, very stripped-down sound that conveys a sense of sadness yet also calm - Can be quite dull, but knowing the backstory of Nick Drake makes it more powerful
Soft
First listen. Ok.
33/1001 Nick Drake’s Pink Moon feels very much like an unfinished and unpolished demo ready for a full recording session, which reading up on it, it sounds like it was the intention. A few of the songs like Things Behind the Sun, Parasite and From the Morning seem complete, while Free Ride seems close to completion, however, most of the rest of the album just misses something from the production. Some of the songs are decent and work in theory, but just lacks in execution, leaving me a bit disappointed. 3/5
Not the "Pink", and "Drake" we're used to in the 21st Century, but despite this being one of the shortest albums I've ever heard, it was soothing folk music. Favorite Song: "Road"
3.5
Some great songs - started and finished strong, but meandered in the middle
Enjoyed this. Early 70s Simon and Garfunkel esque 7/10
Didnt listen to it right now because i have heard it before and i quite like it. I do not return to it super often cause it is a bit bland for my taste but its a greqt album
Very folksy guitars. Very folksy singing. Very folksy songs. Very folksy album.
Some good some less good
There is no way there needs to be more than 1 Nick Drake album on this list... nevermind 3 of them. But a good (and melancholic as always) listen
Charming as usual
Not to my taste.
Raw and powerful, a historical look on how depression and anxiety were still prevalent in the 70's, just less discussed
Lyrics could use some punctuation. Without closed caption I'm not sure I could understand what it was all about. Not offensive and could listen to again.
Liked this one a lot more than I was expecting. Might throw it on in the morning next to my fireplace and coffee this weekend as the world freezes away
Fine
3- Stars (7/15)
Pink Moon sounds like a Laura Marling song and it’s good. He seems like a thoughtful guy. A guy with a guitar is likely not going to be fascinating upon first listen. The lyrics seem good when I catch them.
Opzich wel oke
very sad mood as an album, his voice is raw and the guitar adds such a personal feel to it. parasite is one of my favourites. not really the type of music i listen too though.
Some beautiful music and great songwriting, but not really my cup of tea as I like harder rock, with more upbeat music
genre: folk; cute nice background music
Sounded like most early 70’s rock. Good guitar, good voice, and somber lyrics.
Boy with guitar. Sweet but it kind of blended in the background for me. Stand-out: From The Morning
THREE STARS Liked the songs, especially the guitar. His voice was a little too whispery though.
Even with its repetitiveness, I appreciated the lyrics and melody.
I really liked the album cover! The songs were ok, kinda album you want to listen to at the end of a night out when you’ve had too much to drink but don’t want to go to bed yet
Really good songs for the mildly depressed on a rainy afternoon.
Once again, I’m generally up on this. His voice is pleasant and quite floaty, but I like it. The whole album is stripped back, but it has interesting guitar work and it’s quite evocative. It’s really nice. 3.5 rounded down.
Non offensive
I definitely heard of this first track on the album. Did not know this was Nick Drake.
Started off interesting, ended dragging. A few pretty stylistically abrasive tunes mixed in. Music that needs a specific mood
This was ok background music, surprised it's from the 70s. Nice guitars and vocals. 3* Highlight: from the morning
I like Nick Drakes earlier album Northern Sky which was posthumously reproduced to include percussion and other melodies. Pink Moon feels like an earlier peice of work. Only the title track left an impression.
Consistent album, maybe a bit repetitive, a bit poor in melody variation
Had quite a good time with this one. Really liked the first 3.
Good but nothing special
Ganska mellow. Inget jag kommer lyssna på igen skulle jag tro. Inte dåligt.
Not my personal fave but an easy listen.
Pleasant.
Um dos melhores folks acústicos que não conhecia.
Not my style but nice simple chill music
Nice album perfect for a Sunday watching the sunset.
Quick listen, but a calm one. Nothing really hit me, but it all sort of made me want to float away.
This was very pretty and had a warm and comforting vibe.
Started off great then slowly died from there. Nothing bad though
Lyrically, nothing special. But that acoustic guitar, man that was good. Very unique playing style I can't say I have heard before. Solid 7 out of 10 just for that.
Short but sweet. It is rather simplistic, but that makes for a nice palate cleanser if you are a bit tired from the more experimental albums here.
Mellow. Reminded me of the precurser to Jack Johnson, James Blunt etc. Easy to listen to for sure.
Na
Not bad, a bit slow for the mood of the day. Good voice.
I can hear that Lou Barlow might have been influenced by Nick Drake. It's good. I have to be in the mood for it though.
This reminds me of Big Thief but ik this dude came before them. hmmmm interesting Its good, I just don't care? sorry bro good songs but not my style.
Not bad folk album
Melancolic but quite nice at places. Will probably return to this one at some point
very pretty and calm but never managed to move me 6/10
Third and final album by Nick Drake, fortunately it's also the last tine he will appear on this list for me. Still not my jam, I don't feel this music and certainly I dont enjoy listening to it. Tragic backstory doesn't change it too much.
Somber
Just not a fan
Nice sounding album. 3.5 stars
nick drake isn’t my favorite of his time and genre but i generally enjoy
Nick Drake is a bit of an acquired taste but I've been listening to his work for some time. Some good songs here and guitar playing that verges on acoustic blues at times. Very nice record.
Never heard of him. Unclear why he’s on the list, multiple times. But not bad. Easy listening but somewhat monotonous by the end.
Not my favourite Nick Drake but still beautiful.
Pretty one dimensional bordering on boring. Not quite sure of the huge appeal but thought it was perfectly pleasant. 2.5 Stars
Good songs, low energy
Not disagreeable.
Very bleak. A tad too dark for me.
Pretty, but Nick Drake songs start to blend together and sound the same in my opinion.
All these Nick Drake albums sound the same. It's fine, but just not for me.
Very mellow, but it works if you’re in the right mood for it.
It was fine, nothing specifically stood out.
Mellow
Good album for a cozy fall day.
Sounds just like Alexi Murdoch. Very easy listening with just strong vocals and background guitar. Will definitely be listening to more Nick Drake.
Not bad for background music but I couldn’t even tell when this album started over again. 2.5/5
Pleasant
peak depression folk. too sad
Overall it was fine, but that's really as far as breathy, whispery vocals and acoustic guitars can get you
Kaunis ja taas täykky syysalbumi. Biisit blendautuu toisiinsa niin kolme ⭐
Thought I would hate this because of the terrible cover and the fact I hadn’t heard of it before but I was pleasantly surprised! This is not the worst thing on this list! His voice is interesting and smooth and the tone of the music was calming
This is good, but it wears on me too quickly. I can only take the sound of his voice for a little bit before I start to fade out and feel depressed. 3 stars cause good lyrics
I found this album a bit boring but there were some nice moments of interesting guitar work
Enjoyed this one a few times. New to me. Chill laid back vibe.
Quite surprised this is a 1972 record, as it sounds very fresh. Mesmerizing.
So soothing. While it’s not my speed, his vibe and talent is awesome.
No private session used for Spotify. I knew the song "Pink Moon", skilled acoustic guitar with mumbling lyrics over the top. Not a bad vibe. This is the entire album, though. I might have heard more songs from this album, but I thought they were all Pink Moon. It's alright, but it won't be in rotation.
Another artist I had not heard of. I really liked the album
It's a name I've heard over the years, usually some rockstar complimenting ND on songwriting or something, but I've never really listened to anything he's done. I didn't know he went this far back to 1972! This is much more mellow than I assumed and his voice is more pleasant than what I know from the Bad Seeds days. I can see the draw to this album, I put it on and looked out the window at the beach & boats. Nothing mind-blowing or groundbreaking but enjoyable. The final 1/3rd of the album bottomed out and lacked any sparks. I am glad I had an opportunity to get introduced to older ND, but not sure I'd include this in a Top 1001 list.
Sleepy, but nice. 3.4.
Listened to this three times. The first time my reaction was - pretty good songs, wish the arrangements and the production was a little bit more so the beauty of the songs could be brought out a bit more. Second time my reaction was - wow, I don't think I realized how hook laden all these songs are. All of them feel familiar. Third time through - ok, I get it now, this is a real gem. I still wish I could hear a bit more of a dynamic arrangement and certainly a more dynamic vocal performance, but that's just because I think these could be great pop songs. As it is, the album is serene and savory, and it's absolutely going on the next time I want a quiet moment with someone special.
I liked it. Sounded like one long, chill song.
It's nice
Melancholy madness. But quite beautiful in parts
Really good Better than his other on the list High 3 slash 4
I don’t get Nick Drake. So much praise but I can’t remember anything about any of his songs. They’re ethereal, dreamy, but I remember plenty of dreams, not these ones. It’s fine, inoffensive, probably closer to really good. But who cares if it just exists like a flame and gets blown out. There’s a metaphor there for his life but blegh.
Levyn tunnelma lämmin ja turvallinen. Sopivaa taustamusaa siivoukseen ja kokkailuun, pyörittelin kolme kertaa läpi hyvällä boogiella.
Keskimääräistä parempaa muniinpuhaltelua. Hyvää akkarointia.
Nice but unremarkable
Felt very samey but liked the folk/Americana vibes.
La sua popolarità per me è un mistero
Music of a tortured soul. It’s introspective, low-key. You can certainly feel that this was written by a person who was struggling. Makes me feel guilty for not loving it, but musically it really didn’t do much for me, to be honest.
I liked the writing, the musicianship, and the meaning behind the songs. But, I didn't like his voice. His tone and enunciation were not good for me. Songs like Road and Which Will are great, as was Parasite. But the vocals made it hard for me to listen to.
Not bad. Old nick is starting to grow on me.
Two Nick Drake albums in a row! My previous assessment holds - this music feels like being on sedatives
An entire album of nick drake is a lot to ask of me. I find myself getting frustrated by his melodies and his voice. Beautiful lyrics to be fair.
Very relaxing. Quite enjoyable.
Fun but not for me
Couldn't tell this apart from Five Leaves Left, but enjoyed both, so 3 stars.
Fine
Chill. 3
relaxing
Such an intimate record. With just the acoustic guitar, his voice, and nothing else it feels like a friend playing music for you around a campfire. I was quite impressed by his guitar playing. It was so relaxing and full of skill.
Is it possible for me to rate the entire album off of 1 song? Because Pink Moon the song is maybe one of the greatest acoustic songs of the 20th Century. I would put it right up there with Girl from the North Country, Spanish Boots of Spanish Leather, Sounds of Silence, Both Sides Now, Landslide, Heart of Gold, Country Roads. Its so damn good. I love that song. I feel like all of the acoustic indie music of the 2000s is walking in the path that Pink Moon sent. I honestly thought that song was a 2000s indie song up until my late 20s. It feels like something Elliot Smith could have played or James Mercer would have written. The guitar, the vocal melodies, the lyrics. His whispering thoughtful voice. It's brilliant. Now.. the rest of the album.. its basically a B+ version of the title track. I don't really know how I feel about it. Its like he wrote an absolute banger, and then tried to recreate it without ever recreating it. Every song sounds ALMOST like Pink Moon, because never quite gets there.
I am guessing that this is an album that would really grow on you if you listened to it several times. After my first listen, my impression is that the lyrics must carry it. Musically, it is very basic and similar (to my untrained ear), but the sound is great, but I probably need to pay more attention to understand better why it is on the list.
to me, the purest form of music is a vocalist and an acoustic guitar. most of this album is exactly that, although i think one song had a piano. nevertheless, this was certainly an interesting listen.
Another melancholy album, but I liked it better than his other one and understand the melancholy better now.
Cosy acoustic album, some decent tracks
Ok
I discovered Nick through this 1001 thing with his debut album and wondered why I hadn't heard much of him, then I read the tragic story about his life. This album evolved a bit from the morose debut, but still you can hear and feel the depression in him. It is hard to listen in certain frames of mind, and others can be almost therapeutic. Favorite track "Pink Moon" 3/5
very chill, sounded like the precursor to what we today call singer songwriters? I liked this more than I expected.
Haters weren’t into it, but I think I liked it
Never heard of Nick Drake. Inspiration for Jack Johnson? I dig this one, nice chill vibes. This album might the first I added to my Apple Music that I didn’t already have.
This album reminded me of Coffee house music. Feel like I should’ve been sipping on an espresso while listening. First time listener of Nick and this album.. I enjoyed it and would be down to listen to more of Nick’s catalog.
My least listened to Nick Drake album. It's sparse and well crafted but somehow lacks the charm and intrigue of the 2 before it. However the lack of accompaniment does give it an extra haunted and introspective quality. One of the albums on the list that should be a lovely surprise for many since he only really found success in the late 90s, twenty years after his death. If you like this do check out his other two and maybe 'Bless the weather' by John Martyn.
Pretty good folk. Raspy soft voice. Acoustic. Buzzy guitar. Not bad. Worth listening to twice.
A lot of this sounded the same but he has a very soothing voice.
New artist for me and new album. I liked it and can imagine it would grow on me even more with further listening.
No. 200/1001 Pink Moon 3/5 Place To Be 3/5 Road 3/5 Which Will 3/5 Horn 3/5 Things Behind The Sun 3/5 Know 2/5 Parasite 3/5 Free Ride 3/5 Harvest Breed 3/5 From The Morning 3/5 Average: 2,91 I guess Nick Drake's music just isn't for me.
Io: dai sono contento che singer-songwriter sia nei miei top genres. Nick Drake: allow me to introduce myself.
A mood piece for sure. I think you have to be in the right mindset to really follow this piece. It's obviously deeply personal and there just being vocals and guitar, you're almost in the room with Nick. It was a difficult listen for me but I might try it again.
Not his best but still love his voice
the guitar is my favorite part of this by far. its basic, its stripped down, and its just a man and his guitar at its core. i could have used a bit more from Nick Drake when signing though. this was ultimately almost a four, but the limited singing kinda brought it back. perhaps it would grow on me... but for now its a three.
Early 70’s “guy with a guitar” singing introspective songs. And it’s all fine. In fact, I like it better than the previous album from Nick Drake. But neither of them are essential. The music is solid, the vocals are just ok. This is all pleasant enough, but I’d rather listen to Jane’s Taylor’s “Sweet Baby Names”, Jackson Brown’s debut, John Denver’s “Rocky Mountain High”…. Or even Johnathan Edwards’ debut. Any of these are better. 3/5
Decent in places
Yay, more Nick Drake. Pink Moon is quite similar to the others we've had from him, it's a stripped back but skilled piece of composition filled with all the sadness and quiet desperation of someone who clearly struggled for a long time with a lot of problems. He had three albums and they're all on this list, I think we could've been just fine with one of them, as they're all much of a muchness, and all get a middling 3 from me. Things Behind The Sun is the best track on this record though, it's more rounded and lyrically engaging than the rest.
Very easy to get lost in, it's gentle, dreamy, the vocals are super airy (just like in the other two albums of his we've had), but this time there's not much other than him, his guitar, and the occasional bit of piano. Trouble is, it's so ethereal that I struggle to really focus in on what he's saying, which in such a light arrangement is a bit of an issue. That knocks it down from a high score to a 3, I think.
Started off strong but I zoned out pretty fast. Still, listenable album, just not something I can see myself listening to again. It’s just ok.
Ok.
Simple acoustic guitar and vocal accompaniment. Lyrics are short but have a poetic quality. Big themes of live and depression. 3.5
Kind of liked this one. Just happened to be a rainy day and this was a great accompaniment to the world at large. 3.5 Probably will listen again
Decent vocals. Beautiful instrumentation, but only came away with one song being “Place to be”, which was only on first listen. Don’t know if I’ll come back to the rest of the album. 6/10
Good guitar, decent lyrics, though tend towards the morose…
A nice chill indie rock album. Most songs sound like they could have been on the Garden State soundtrack.
It's never heard of Nick Drake before this album came up. I enjoyed it, very chill and minimal. Just a man and his guitar.
This was nice and calming but it all sounds the same. I was ready for something different by the end.
I don't like it very much, but I understand why lots of people do. Favorite song: Free ride.
Pleasant, nice for a beach bonfire, but kind of forgettable.
Reminded me of a folk singer I like. It was pleasant.
3.7 pleasant
Not for me today. Too mellow and melancholic. On another day I may have found this beautiful.
The songwriting is good. The vocals are flat and uninteresting in the first half but got better. Nice guitar throughout and relaxing. Wouldn't mind a relisten if it happened to come on but wouldn't seek it out to listen to it again.
I only know of Nick Drake because of Garden State. But I do like him. I mean it was okay... I don't mind listening to this on a lazy sunday morning or something but. It's only getting 3 stars from me.
ok. not memorable
Loved a few songs
неплохо. ощущается как кантри? весёлым и приятным, но текст довольно грустный что-ли. большая часть песен только пол гитару придает песням лёгкости наверное
Pleasant. Acoustic guitar and nice vocals. Haven’t been challenged yet. Like jack Johnson without the douchiness. Short, 28 minutes. Enjoyed it. Not sure I’d ever play it again
I just didn’t get into it. May have to give it another listen
Simple rock, maybe similar to Simon & Garfunkel Undergraduate style
