Jeff Buckley-esque folk guitar. Nice voice and guitar parts
It's really a whole mood. It's twilight on a quiet front porch or by the campfire, in the country... It's sitting alone in a deserted stairwell in an apartment building....
- Pink Moon is a great track -4/5 stars
1. From the morning 2. Parasite 2. Things behind the sun
One of the better singer songwriter albums. A good length too
Beautiful guitar sounds, very mellow
After rolling Five Leaves Left a few months ago, I was really hoping to hear more of Nick Drake and his music as soon as possible. I called the last album extremely depressing, yet uplifting. I feel the same way about this one. It makes me unbelievably sad, but sometimes that’s ok. Knowing that Nick made this album and would be dead shortly after contextualizes it succinctly, I believe better than anything else possibly could. It’s just one beautiful, tragically depressed soul, playing sad music from the deepest corners of his heart. He was 26 when he died, but before he went, he created 3 albums that each found their way onto this list. This is the second of 3 I’ve had the pleasure of hearing, and I’m betting the last one will be just as good as the other 2 have been. Pink Moon is only 27 minutes long, likely making it one of the shortest albums on the list, but man, those 27 minutes really say a lot. Once again, RIP Nick, I hope your family takes at least some solace knowing how highly people think of your music. Favorite song? All of it. I think “Know” is my favorite.
Just take a moment. Put on From the Morning. Close your eyes. Tell me you don't feel better. One doesn't even need to pay attention to the lyrics. Closest I've gotten to a 5*.
Chill album. For when you’re in a chill mood.
This is #day380 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... it's been a while since I last got a Nick Drake album. The first was Bryter Layter on my #day32, which feels like forever ago now. Pink Moon is like these little poetry sketches brushed against the stark backdrop of an acoustic guitar and occasional piano, making up pensive rainy-day listening. I particularly like the artwork. Makes me wonder if The Chameleons and Talk Talk took inspiration from it. This is a 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day381.
Loved it. Always thought it was from the early aughts indie revival. Never realized it was from the 70s. Of course the boomers slept on one of the best artists of their era.
Beautiful and clearly influential
Whew, that’s some heavy melancholy. I know the consensus is that this is Drake’s best album. Probably so? The lyrics are a little more approachable, I think. Better, even. I sort-of yearn for a *little* more sonic variety, though. Fine work—especially the title track.
4/5
Very cozy. Almost 5 but lacks standouts
sultry, intimate.
8/10 The greatest strength of this album is in the intimacy of it. Everything is recorded so close up and presented in such starkness that it feels like you’re almost stood beside Nick as he performs. You can even hear his breaths and the movement of his fingers over the fretboard, and that only enhances the beauty of the work. And when it hits, this album really is beautiful. Personally, there were a few places where things lulled and became a little repetitive, particularly when an idea was played out over a longer running time with less variation than personally appeals to me, and I also found the resonance in the guitar on Know to be quite grating to the ear. Aside from that, though, I felt that this was a really pretty portrait of an artist and his state of mind at this time of his life. There’s elements of sorrow, but also of hope, all presented with a starkness and restraint from a lyrical point of view, but with a guitar that delivers momentum and pace, with little ideas and motifs presented from around the fretboard while the pensive delivery of the vocal almost sounds reluctant in a way, that only adds to the intimacy of the production. Pink Moon - This is a really beautiful song that is elevated by the recording and production. He clearly sings at quite a low volume, but it’s presented in such a way that you feels so close to Nick as he sings that you’re almost inside his head. Even the simple piano line just flows out of nowhere and adds an unexpected depth. It rolls around in a really lovely way and then it’s done. Place To Be - The way that the guitar lilts and pulses adds such a satisfying rhythmic bed to this, and then his vocal that almost lazily flows over the top of it is such a pleasant blend of staccato and legato movements. The guitar can be quite deceptive, because there are some lovely little melodic edges that sit in the high register over the chords that there’s a rolling movement that exists outside of the lower, more prominent bed of the guitar part. It’s lovely. Road - The recording of the guitar in this track, even more than the first two, feels like you can almost hear every tiny sound of his fingers as he plays. It’s like he’s playing right next to your ear. I love the slight dips in tempo he takes here and there that just emphasise the structure of the composition. And he doesn’t overdo the vocals, just allows the guitar part to keep its focus and augments with a little bit of vocal flavour. Which Will - The guitar playing is so deft here, with the chords able to ring out over the picked elements. It’s always moving, but that doesn’t stop there from being a clear and solid structural bed that rings through. Again, the vocals are sparse but effective, anchoring the guitar as it flows and moves through the track. It’s incredibly well balanced and emotionally moving too. Horn - The last song was comparatively quite busy, but this allows a moment of pause to gather one’s thoughts before we move on. It’s sparse and open, but also quite pretty. Things Behind The Sun - There’s something very melancholic about the chord choices during some sections, but it lifts into something more optimistic and hopeful in others. I’m less keen on this track and there are a couple of places where it jars with me slightly, it feels a tiny bit rushed to me and a little too forcefully played, if that makes sense. I think the tracks work better for me when they’re more fleeting and this is a bit more long-form. Know - There’s some resonance on the guitar in this track that grates on me and the fact that it’s just the same bar played for two and a half minutes doesn’t help that. The vocal is actually really nice, but that guitar. Not for me. Parasite - The guitar movements are quite subtle on this track, but it is perhaps a little bit repetitive as the cadence of the guitar line remains very similar throughout, even with the changes in chord. Again, the vocal is an almost ethereal presence that drifts over the top of everything and provides a bit more variance to things. There are bits that are absolutely beautiful, but I do wish for a little more development in places. Free Ride - There’s a bit more variety to this and it benefits from it. Again, we feel so close to things that you can even hear his breath. There’s some fantastic drive and momentum to this one and the balance again between the staccato guitar and legato vocal is great, with the added twist that they meet in the middle for the sections that the vocal echoes the guitar in a really lovely blend. Harvest Breed - This movement of the guitar line as it moves up and down the scale is really nice. Again, it doesn’t offer a wide arrange of ideas, but it is so brief that that doesn’t really matter. From The Morning - I really like the guitar work here. There’s extra little variations and movements in there to make things have an added element of momentum. There are also some really nice choices of chords in there too. It’s really well paced and pretty and the vocal line really perfectly straddles the line between melancholic and optimistic. A great closer.
Great singer songwriter album that I had never heard before. Albums like this make this project worthwhile, finding these gems is inspiring.
Just some very nice acoustic singer-songwriter music.
Chill vibes
This was an unexpected and unassuming delight to listen to. It gives off a beautiful chill vibe, where less is more. Easily a 3.5 leaning heavily towards a 4. I would definitely - and purposefully - listen to this album again.
I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. Somehow the overall vibe of this really resonated with me.
This album took me away. Early echoes of a proto Jack Johnson-type vibe. A man and his acoustic. Alternate tunings I am guessing. a haunting piano thrown in sparingly. A voice like cream in a night coffee. Really nice.
Awesome album, great vibe
Off the cuff remark: I first came to Nick Drake after hearing 90s indie-punk band I loved, Drive, cover the Road. Not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't this. I still like him although Five Leaves Left is my favourite album, this is still pretty sublime. Standout track: still has to be The Road Revisit?: yes
feels melancholic and hopeful at the same time, he sings almost shyly, very short and repetitive lyrics, songs are very similar, feels soothing "pink moon"/"parasite"
Nick Drake has such a pure and stripped-back sound. I listened to Five Leaves Left, and I think I liked Pink Moon just slightly more. Bryter Layter takes it for me right now, because I like the production and instrumentation of that one more. For now, I would’ve like more from this album, but I can see it being one I warm up to, more than I already enjoyed it.
Had this album already in my collection. Still a beautifully crafted folk album. One of my first encounters with this genre 40 years ago. Tender and melancholic songs when you're in the mood for it. 4/5
I've never heard of this guy, but right from the beginning I really got a sense of later Pearl Jam/Eddie Vedder. The kind of sound he had on the soundtrack for Into the Wild, for example. Based on the description, I was expecting something a little more dreary, but the songwriting is really good here. Very clean crisp acoustic guitar. I'll probably go back to this one. 4/5
I really enjoy this album, it’s a great listen
Very soothing and easy listen. Could some consider it coffee shop fodder, sure, but I could feel my blood pressure dropping which is a good thing. Acoustic guitar and the right pipes done right is a good recipe. Great music in the right setting.
I remember being pretty stunned when I first saw the 1999 VW commercial featuring Pink Moon. Not sure that’s where Nick envisioned his music, but from an artistry standpoint it did kinda work. All that to say that I’ve always felt his work to be timeless. And beautiful. And vulnerable. And mysterious. All at the same time. To know that this album was recorded in just two late night sessions gives it even more credit. I only wish it were longer.
Really beautiful and simple album, the kind where you know the perfect place/time to put it on.
Rating this in line with Five Leaves Left. Not sure which I enjoy more. I don't say this often, but wish this album was a bit longer...especially given it was his last. Amazing the sound and emotion from just a dude and his guitar. 3.75/5
I was told off today for ‘enjoying’ Nick Drake. To be fair, the person (he runs a record store) said that the intellectual bridge spanning Drake’s ethereal music and his tragic end was too tasking for him. I mumbled something about discovering the music before the biography (true - I knew the general contours, but only full appreciated the full extent of his collapse after reading Joe Boyd’s White Bicycles. I don’t enjoy Nike Drake. I am stirred, deeply, by Nick Drake.
Pretty and sad.
Really enjoyed this, had never heard it before
Fukked widdit
calm and relaxing; nice picking
Pink Moon is a hauntingly intimate album that showcases Nick Drake’s remarkable ability to convey deep emotion with minimalism and subtlety. It’s a brief but captivating listen, and while its quiet introspection may not be for everyone, those who connect with it will find a deeply rewarding experience. Its understated beauty, paired with its melancholic and timeless themes, make it a standout in Drake’s catalog and a classic of the folk genre.
This one closes out the Nick Drake studio album discography for me, after Bryter Layter last year and Five Leaves Left a couple months ago. Drake is a very interesting, very unique artist and I'm glad to have been introduced to his work. Mood-wise it's on a wavelength all its own. It does sometimes feel like the songs begin to run together a bit; there was one on here where for a moment I thought, "didn't I already hear this one on one of the other albums?" Final Nick Drake rankings: #1 Bryter Layter, #2 Pink Moon, #3 Five Leaves Left.
I really liked this one. Just a nice quiet album. Not my typical thing, but I'd be happy to have this one playing.
Highlight Song/s: Road This is what I would imagine would play after climbing a hill and watching the sun rise, after surviving a tough night; whilst you feel very hopeful for whats to come.
If you're in a Nick Drake kind of mood, nothing hits better. Wearing a sweater looking sadly out the window.
All time sad boy album. If anything, just a little short in my opinion.
Decent
I didn't expect this but I guess I'm a Nick Drake fan. The first album we had from him really surprised me with how much I enjoyed it and so did this one despite being a fairly big departure from the last one. It's so simple, just a guitar and a voice in the vast majority of it. His voice is just weird enough that it sticks out and he's actually a capable singer unlike a lot of his "folk music" contemporaries and the following movement. I wouldn't call this folk music though. Musically all of the songs are interesting and likely fun to play. They aren't incessant boring strumming, though they are strummed for the most part. The chord progressions are unique and the voice complements them really well. If I didn't know this album came out in the early 70's I wouldn't have believed you if you told me. It sounds almost 90's, and that's a good thing for me. The only knock I have on this is that the songs blend a little together; I couldn't tell you which one was which. They were all enjoyable, and I never though to skip or turn it off. It's a 4.5 for me precisely because there's nothing that's going to keep me coming back specifically. A really enjoyable listen though.
Breathy vocals. Great sings
I was not familiar before this listen. I think if I’d have heard this in my 20s I wouldn’t have enjoyed it. In my 40s, I like it quite a bir
melancholic singer-songwriter acoustic guitar music are a dime a dozen today, but great ones? those are rare and i get addicted to them. it's basically drugs. and this is one of the greats.
Great singer, great music. Left us way too soon.
Lovely, serene, introspective folk album. Very simple arrangements, almost feeling a little lonely at times. This was really nice for a quick half hour experience.
Un favorito. Pensé que lo había descubierto gracias a este proyecto, pero resulta que no.
Nice easy album, melancholic classic soft rock from the soul
вот она настоящая депрессивная музыка, брр... хорошие песни, приятные, но такие грустные. им бы очень подошла более мощная аранжировка и побольше инструментов, а одинокая акустическая гитара все делает только еще грустнее. но послушала с удовольствием
The most classic of Nick Drake's catalogue. If your mood fits this vibe there are not many records better, but I do find it isn't universal for all times. Still a great one. 4.5/5
Beautiful album, love his songwriting and guitar work. I love putting this one on and just chilling.
Simple and thoughtful. 8/10
I love Nick Drake's music, and he's one of my favorite acoustic guitarists. Always remarkable to me that someone who was in such a dark headspace most of the time created such comforting, beautiful, soulful music. The first four tracks on this are absolutely perfect, I love his unique tunings and picking style and the poetic lyrics. Does fall off for me somewhat in the second half with less memorable tunes, but still some gorgeous playing all the way through, and finishes strong with one of his best, From the Morning. Love the weird album art too
Loved this, Nick Drake is always great vibes and I'd be reaching for this album again 4
Chillout
Pink Moon – Nick Drake (1972) | Folk / Singer-Songwriter | Avg: 8.5 | Favorite Song: “Pink Moon”* Pink Moon is quiet in volume but overwhelming in feeling. At just over 28 minutes, it’s a whisper of an album—but what a powerful whisper it is. The title track alone carries more emotional weight than most artists’ entire catalogs. It’s stark, minimal, and hauntingly beautiful, and that tone carries throughout the record. There’s no filler, no fanfare—just Nick Drake, his guitar, and the kind of intimate songwriting that demands you stop and really listen. From a reviewer’s lens, what makes Pink Moon so special is its restraint. Drake strips everything down to the bare essentials, yet the emotional complexity remains. Every note feels intentional, every lyric feels like it’s been lived. It’s not an album that tries to impress—it just exists, quietly devastating in its simplicity. Whether you’re in the mood for melancholy or just want to be reminded how powerful understatement can be, this one delivers every time.
Lovely album, very mellow.
Listened to this a few years ago for the first time and still do time and time again. I'm not sure if I prefer this or bryer leter but I think about this one more. Nick's most minimalist record and maybe most personal. I don't think it's a masterpiece but I understand why some people love it although I feel there's better options out there (Phil Elverum's stuff for example or even Jackson C. Frank's self- titled).
Good album for a very humid day.
A solid singer/songwriter album. Feels like this probably influenced a lot of the 2000s style artists like Jack Johnson. Album was pretty short so it was an easy listen but also made it feel like there could have been more to it. Very enjoyable though!
An exceptional album. I’d heard Nick Drake before and liked his sound. But i feared it would become cloying over the course of a whole album. It didn’t; I really enjoyed listening to this album. The tunes are varied, within a cohesive framework. Drake’s singing is a little high for my tastes. But i might get used to it — he’s not forcing anything. An easy 4, but i can see this becoming a desert island album after a few more listens.
Smooth and fun, quick and breezy little listen like the previous Nick Drake album I've gotten. 7/10
Got a soft spot in my heart for music that sounds like this. However, it's a bit short and stylistically repetitive.
I liked this a little less than his first album, but it's a really solid set of songs. Beautifully performed and recorded
Beautifully simplistic
Calm, stripped back and atmospheric. Enjoyed this.
Not my favorite style of music, but I will admit I really enjoyed the album. The songs were short but well crafted - not your usual folksy 3-chord songs. There was a lot of depth and heart in each song. A great listen!
Nice to hear this again after a twenty year gap.
Deeply intimate, personal, shy, small-scale. Really liked this, as I thought I would based on my previous experience with Nick Drake. I just like the guitar tunes, simple as they are. This is almost the opposite of Pink Floyd's The Wall, which is next on my list, both thematically, musically and in presentation and production, and I know which I prefer.
Very dreamy music. Acoustic guitar sounds crisp and clear. Would listen to more!
‘Pink Moon’ is a classic record. The stripped back instrumentation showcases Drake’s attention to melody, and that, he does well!
Beautiful voice, Beautiful voice….. Just lovely!
Had 8 cans at a bbq, came home and felt perfect for the situation I was in. Only downside would be it isn’t long enough. First time listening to Nick Drake and cant wait to hear more
its giving sufjan stevens
A new listen. Not my favorite but I enjoyed
I like this album a lot, it’s such a vibe, but I don’t think it’s a must-listen compared to his other albums. I would own it, but that’s a personal choice.
Why do some artists think they deserve upward of an hour of my attention, while Nick Drake fits inside my commute and left me time to spare? I'm deducting a star because I actually needed at least one more song.
Reminds of Brazilian jazz. Very smooth. Love his voice.
Think I still prefer “Bryter”, but I’ve also listened to it…many more times than this. Expect to appreciate more and more with each listen!
Really enjoyed the strawberry moon tribute. Up there with my dad’s favourite albums, never really understood why but maybe starting to understand. Possibly the worst running album of the 1001. For Sadie
I loved this. Stripped back, melancholic. Listened to it twice and will be going back
4/5
Pink Moon Which Will Things Behind the Sun From the Morning
I enjoyed this one for what it was. Similar to last week’s jazz album, I felt that this one was great background noise and pretty good music. Unlike the jazz album, I would likely listen to this one in my spare time. Would give a 3.5 if I could, but here’s a 4.
Really enjoyed this, great background music....feels like good coffee sipping music
so good! amazing guitar. i need to listen to this again while reading the lyrics
Beautifully tragic
great chill acoustic vibes
Exactly what I expected.
Damn, this is good. I know his voice but never listened to an album of his. This whole album is in my rotation now. I need to listen to all of his stuff. The more I listen the more I'm glad it's just him and a guitar on this. It just all works together so damn well.
Mmmmm
Thanks to this list I've listened to one other Nick Drake album, Bryter Layter. I like this one more. Very simple and peaceful, him and a guitar. I found it very calming. Might be good to listen to at the end of a busy, frustrating day. Excellent album.
Ihanan rauhallinen ja kaunis!
pedradaça! bem sincero e pessoal esse hein. bacana demais. não eh atoa que eh um dos albuns mais influentes do folk, né dito isso capa mto foda parabens aos envolvidos
Perfect example of an outlier for me. As I have mentioned many times before, I really do not care for most singer/songwriter, storyteller with an acoustic guitar type of music. But this is great. Drake's voice is instantly recognizable and sounds perfect with the subdued almost classical-style guitar work. I worked a job in the mid-'90s where this album played DAILY, and I still really enjoy it.
Not his best. Still great, with opener/title track the best of the lot. The rest is broody-thoughtful (maybe to a fault), beautiful and important. A clear and understandable manifestation of his legend.
Hauntedly beautiful.
Impressive how this album is almost exclusively acoustic guitar, creating a raw and melancholic sound.
- super laid-back und moody, relativ abwechslungsreich, dazu auch noch echt kurz - glaube da werde ich immer mal wieder reinhören
This is lovely, but I wouldn't rate it as high as most people apparantly do. The songs are not catchy enough, I hear the music more in an atmospheric way. Lovely artwork, though.
It's a simple, yet quietly beautiful album that never quite blew my socks off, and yet all the same was an all too enjoyable listening experience.
I enjoyed this one
Lovely.
I’m sure Radiohead prepared me to hear this.
A solid listen but a little short on time. Would love a longer album of this.
Do you want to listen to some music that has some guitar? Well in Pink Moon you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐⭐. I recommend this song. Do you want to listen to some music that has some nice guitar? Well in Parasite you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐. I kind of recommend this song. Do you want to listen to some music that has a lot of guitar? Well in From the morning you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐⭐. I recommend this song.
I like this because I like the melody and the rhymes. I also like how his voice sounds. I would recommend this to someone else because I feel like they would like it. I give it 4 stars.
pink moon I like this song because it is kinda a calm song and it sounds like a country song too. parasite I like this song because it is also a calm song too. from the morning I like this song because it is like a calm song too.
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Didn't have anything that blew me away, but nice acoustic guitar work and well composed songs- a very good listen.
I’m cautious about mainlining depression through music, so setting that aside, this is a good listen.
Very organic, bit to short
83/100. Nick Drake's Pink Moon is a beautifully produced album. With stunning guitar work and delicate yet haunting vocals, it’s a record that leaves a lasting impression. The stripped-down, intimate sound makes it feel deeply personal. It’s bittersweet knowing this was his final album—such a great talent gone too soon. Pink Moon may be short and understated, but its emotional weight and craftsmanship make it a timeless classic.
"Pink Moon" may initially appear to be a simple album, characterized by Nick Drake's vocals, his guitar, and sporadic piano chords. However, the guitar work is rich and impressive, while the lyrics exemplify a vulnerability, with a reminder that beauty can still emerge even in the bleakest moments. In essence, this album is more than just a listening experience; it offers an introspective journey that resonates deeply. There is an honest and emotional depth on this album, almost like a quiet resignation or confession, that sticks with you even after the album is over. This review may come across as corny. Yet, it is the undeniable truth.
Its fantastic
Yeah. 9/10
An album that feels like it was made to be listened to late at night alone in your bedroom. I listened to it on my headphones at 11am in a busy office, but it still felt intimate.
Svag fyra. Bra chill-musik.
Essential.
Great album despite it being co-opted by Urban Outfitters and a certain kind of coffee shop.
This was really nice! I think I liked this more than the other Nick Drake album, although both are good. Not sure if that's the consensus take. It's also much more pleasant to listen to than whatever British band was yesterday's album. Always tricky to start with the lead single but this album is good enough to pull it off without letting you down the rest of the way.
Wait, I think I love this man? I definitely love the first half of this album. Went back to Bryter Layter after listening to Pink Moon, and again: Nick's a first half king.
🌒
A stripped down and personal sounding album. You can dislike the style of music but Nick Drake did an incredible job conveying a feeling that's hard to put a label on. Cool cover too. It has a feeling like you should listen to it by yourself on headphones on a walk.
I've been listening to this album for years. Magnificent.
Still sounds fresh, good music for when you have a headache too
4/5
good 30 minute, but starts a little too strong compared to the rest
Nice simple album.
I'd never heard of Nick Drake before this album, and I'm a bit bummed that I hadn't. This a really good album. It's not long, the songs are great sounding. Definitely worth a revisit.
One of my favorites, wonderful acoustic, mellow mood -Pink Moon -Road -Parasite
Super mellow, wanted to do drugs, but had to drive and get things done.
The voice for introverts.
always pretty
Real good. Real nice.
How intriguing for a 70's album
makes me feel like laying in the grass and pondering for hours with a smile on my face. i love the amount of use of the guitar, consistently beautiful.
Beautiful
Maybe the saddest and weirdest of Nick Drake's albums, this swansong resonates with a nuanced sensitivity and weariness which sits at beautiful odds with how well executed the record is. Gorgeous fingerstyle guitar playing, creative arrangements and idiomatic vocals. The lyrics explore a chemical ennui which connects the art with its artist. Beautiful, but Five Leaves Left remains my favourite of his. Favourite tracks: Place To Be, Which Will, Things Behind The Sun, Parasite, From The Morning
Very vibey
Top stuff
Nice album, will listen again
Moody, but in a good way.
I had a minor obsession with the Garden State soundtrack (I know, so unique) and there’s a Nick Drake song on there (not from this album) that I love. I don’t think I’d listened to anything else by him but I thoroughly enjoyed this!
Mopey and monotonous, I appreciate Nick Drake's ability to set a mood and guitar playing, but not his songwriting. Strong throwback to the golden age of 2000s quirky cinema/Zach Braff galore.
A sweet little album
Subtle, down-key album.
Ok, this album is quite remarkable. I knew the title track somewhat well and quite sure I've listened to the entire thing before. I suspect it's an album that grows on the listener and could become quite a blissful experience after a few times. For me it already started to sound quite great.
Sad, moody, melancholic man and his guitar. 8/10
Very chill
Calm and gentle. A perfect Sunday afternoon album.
3.5 stars
Incredibly short and sweet.
Hard for me to categorize this. All of this was new to me except From The Morning. My favorite tune was Pink Moon. Nick Drake has a unique sound and this album rolls most of its 28 mins in a cozy wavelength of soft sounds and deep lyrics. I dig it, but I dont know how to rank it. Safely saying 3.5 stars and rounding up to 4.
Man, this guy's sadness really comes through in his music. One of those times you're really not surprised to learn that a musician was depressed and died young. His music is pretty though. I like it
Nice relaxing guitar Acoustic Slow Sad Pleasant voice
I had not heard of Nick Drake before this album popped up on my generator list. What a gem! I really like it. You can definitely tell that John Mayer was influenced heavily by this guy's voice and writing style, just more modern. Overall, this is a great album and I'm glad I got to enjoy it. Top songs: Pink Moon Place To Be Which Will Parasite 4/5
looove this album, just makes me sad that he got barely any recognition in his own time:(
Fine music, no standouts.
Chill 😎
Easy listening and relaxing. Short album. Maybe a little tune it out-y
A tricky one this. I read it was his favourite work, stripped down to just his words, voice and guitar. But somehow I think his best songs are on the first two albums. Still lovely though, and of course so sad.
I’ve sought this one out before. All the lonely internet people LOVE guys who died young. People who live to old age are unintellectual LOSERS. Right guys? Gee I wonder why suicide rates are up. Anyway, I remember really enjoying this album despite the mental illness fetishization that has happened in the intervening 53 years since the initial rise of the Pink Moon. Let’s revisit this ode to mysterious depressed dudes with my hater hat ™️ firmly atop my thinning hair and critique this to high heaven. Beautiful song. Gentle vocals, (albeit a little loud in the mix) and an excellent song structure. This one is a repeated listen for me. Has varied and wholesome guitar sections with the trademark vocals. Another hoss. A kinder, gentler hoss. Each song is so memorable. Here’s another one. It’s not like I listened to this yesterday but it feels as though it’s my 30th listen. Not in the way that it’s repetitive or boring, but in the way that it feels like I’m being greeted by a familiar pleasant sight or scent. “Which Will” has induced goosebumps. The first time in a little bit from any song during this album experiment. This is what so many indie songwriters attempt to capture and simply can’t. Some people are special. Most aren’t. This individual appears to be in the former category. A sparse and chilling instrumental break. Not my favourite song here but not near poor. Another nice acoustic songwriter moment. A little bland. Humming over a guitar riff is slightly overdone at this point and I’m sure it was even at the time of release. Not unpleasant, but just there for me. I am the parasite of THIS town. Well. Not really. I just like to crawl around all crazy-like and wear shirts that say “I DRINK BLOOD AT CRAZY RANDY’S PLASMA DUMP.” That’s kind of what this song says to me. This is almost upbeat but still somehow so morose. Nick Drake gets catchy. Despite the greatest band name ever AND the opening god damn track of Guitar Hero 3, Foghat, wishes they wrote Free Ride over the monster that is, Slow Ride. WE ARE HARVEST BREED AND THIS SONG IS CALLED DISINTERRED FROM THE BARREN SOIL OF HADES. That’s my impression of a gardening based beatdown hardcore band. Nick Drake DID NOT say that. He wrote another nice song that has a lovely crepitating acoustic line through its brief runtime. What a closer. Absolutely gorgeous. One unique voice and an acoustic guitar is all that’s needed to explore melancholy to a deep, yet manageable level. No compromises were made on Pink Moon, and I leave feeling a little drained, yet fully at peace. As long as we’re not cheering and hooting at the gallows for the miserable, I can get behind this eloquent capturing of often elusive emotions. Nick Drake produced a moment in time to be remembered forever here. Truly the place to be. 4.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Pink Moon, Place to Be, Which Will, Free Ride, From the Morning
Quite enjoyable. Short and sweet
Pink Moon is definitely one of the most relaxing and peaceful albums i have heard. Everything about it just feels so much like i am relaxing underneath a starry sky which kinda fits considering that this album is called pink moon. I think that the main things that help this album be as good as it is are the composition of the songs as well as Nick Drake's vocals being pretty much the main selling points of this album. I guess if i had one issue with this album, it would be that in some places, there is something i don't like with how the guitars sound. A majority of the songs absolutely do get it right though so this album still is able to earn itself a 3.5. Best Song: Things Behind The Sun Worst Song: Know
Very whimsical, thought-evoking, and emotional. It's a bit short, but a very solid album nonetheless
Great album, very melancholic but soothing, just voice and guitar. Very folk based, soothing airy vocals, need to hear more stuff from him! His voice reminds me of the Harmonium singer
Simply beautiful
lovely, also this guy reminds me of me
A lonely sounding album. Almost exclusively Nick and his guitar, it's sound is interesting, subdued and quite enjoyable
This kept reminding me of something but I never put my finger on it. Maybe music that was inspired by this album that came later?
p274. 1972. 4 stars. Lovely, haunting melodies masking a sense of melancholy and desperation. The perfect soundtrack for a cold grey February morning. And he was a decent guitarist. Point deducted for a lack of standout tunes.
Lots of single male vocals and acoustic guitar with just a little piano. A little bit depressing, but decent background music.
Yes, beautifully haunted and gorgeously sad in a melancholic troubadour kinda way, but also limited in scope and iron-poor/low energy. Fey and wan as all get out, and precious seeming at times. The guitar playing is spare and powerful, yet other times seeming so basic. The voice is somewhat the same – hushed and restrained at times, and then feckless seeming. The accompaniments of the previous record are missed. The romantic myth/brand of Nick Drake – the Keats of rock/pop – explains why this is a record to know. To know it is to understand its extraordinary intimacy, but also its modesty. What a talent, though Woulda been interesting to see what would come next if only the previous albums had sold or been critically recognized.
excellent folk album, not quite 5 stars because of Drake's voice
Glad to get another Nick Drake on the list. There's a dearth of 60/70s folky singers, and I detest most of them. Nick Drake though, perfect blend of sincere songwriting and top notch guitar work.
Nick Drake has grown on me so much. Such a pure soul
I already knew this album and I enjoy it a lot. This album establishes the mood so well; it is so dark despite being acoustic guitar and vocals. My favorites are the title song and From The Morning, but there really is not a bad track on here.
what a pleasant and cozy listening experience :) 8.5/10
To me this sounds like early 2000s indie folk, thanks to it's connection with needle drops from movies I was watching at the time. It's hard to place it in it's actual setting, 1972. But understandable that amongst his British counterparts at the time, he wouldn't stand out. Which is too bad. This is beautiful music. Quiet, intimate, understated. He does a lot with a little. His wispy voice definitely sets the melancholic tone. I'd have to be in the mood for this. But looking outside, cold and wet, it appears that the mood is now. Did some digging. Man, his life was really, really sad.
Doesn’t sound like an album from over 50 years ago — it’s timeless!
I feel this album helped me appreciate him more than his others (I think I got all of the albums in chronological order, oddly enough) this one is bare, it is sparse and it is sad. The guitar work is brilliant, simply haunting and mesmerizing. His lyricism is poetic, dark, and interesting. The intimacy of this albums is its true delight, the first three songs are borderline hopeful (which is where it piques my interest) and then it degrades into true melancholy for a stretch (which I think is my main gripe with his previous work) and then ends on a similar tone to where it began which leaves me to wonder where his catalog may have gone with a follow up album. This album entices me to explore his other 2 albums. I really love the intimate singer-song writing nature of this.
Tragic artist but produced some fine material while he was with us
Really cool and melodic. Reminds me of Jim Croche. But after about song 5-6 of the album, it was very "same same", so I stopped listening.
Nick Drake was an amazing musician and vocalist. I'm constantly impressed with the high quality albums on this list. The only deficits are really that this album is too short, and they some of the songs in the middle of the album get slightly less memorable. Great music overall though. 4/5
Beautiful guitar, lyrics a bit hard to understand, and would have been nice to have some melodic variation in voicing to accompany complex chords played by the guitar. Perfect for a specific mood, just not perfect for me.
Loved this album for a long time.
Mellow album, perfect om bij te chillen maar wel allemaal een beetje eentonig
Ah yes the cult icon Nick Drake. Definitely under appreciated during his brief time and a chillingly beautiful album. Great vocals with simple, but prominent, guitar playing. Short yet fulfilling. 7.5/10 (3.75/5)
You want to hear a funny yet morbid tangent for this album? In the 115 albums I’ve done, I have two from 2016. They are Blackstar by David Bowie and You Want It Darker by Leonard Cohen. They are two albums made by popular artists who would later pass away, leaving them to be their swansongs. Both acted as the caps to legendary, influential careers. This album has that same aura, but in a more tragic light. Blackstar and You Want It Darker were made with the end of the road for both artists in sights. Bowie and Cohen were already having health problems that left them time to reflect on their iconic legacy. I have never heard of Nick Drake prior to getting this album. Researching him shown that he only became influential after his death, with this album being his swansong after his fatal overdose. It’s not a reflection of a successful career (sadly the contrary) and there is a slight air of that in Pink Moon. It’s simple and short, with Nick, his acoustic guitar and a backing piano as the ensemble for the tracks. Nick has a voice that is weak, but deep and profound. I don’t think too many artists in the 70’s sounded like this. Given the context of his life, there is a melancholic, yet gentle feel to this album. It demands your attention as Nkck takes us on his own journey. He doesn’t care if anybody listens to it or not. He’s just putting his mind out on the record, which tragically would be the last he would do it. In one of life’s greatest cruelties, Nick would never live to see the legacy he would have and the artists he would influence. Unlike Blackstar and You Want It Darker, Pink Moon is not a reflection of an iconic career. But it does stand as a testament against the stigma of popular music and how the industry sometimes misses actual talent. Hell, in Nick Drake’s case, it suppressed it. Fortunately, Nick got the recognition he deserved and I’m happy outlets like this give people the opportunity to listen to him. While I wish the album was a little longer, Pink Moon is still a haunting and mesmerizing gem of an album. Favorite track: Which Will Other hits: Pink Moon, Road, Things Behind the Sun, Free Ride, From the Morning
Reminds me of my youth
Enjoyable listen. Chilled me out on my stressful drive home
9/10
I had only heard the title track before this listen through, after seeing it in a VW commercial a long time ago. But the song has stuck with me since then. Finally listening to the rest of the album, and the other tracks are nearly just as good, making this a really solid album all around.
Very enjoyable
2nd album of his I've listened to & liked 👍
Lay in the sun today and listened to this. Really beautiful.
Interesting album. Love the musicianship. Don't really get the nonsense lyrics. Overall, I enjoyed listening to this as background.
I love this album. Nick Drake had such a beautiful & deeply sorrowful sound (and life). Wish we had more time with him. It's a bleak one but... impactful.
Would add to my dinner party playlist. Love Pink Moon, especially the simple piano. Concise album. Sufjan Stevens/Wes Anderson + the durutti column?
I enjoyed this one more than the previous one. I'm not a huge fan, but I'll listen to more of his (limited) catalog again.
It's impressive the melodies and rhythm he created with only a guitar. His voice isn't the greatest, but it works for the mood. I feel like this is a more consistent album than Bryter Layter. I expected the album to be depressing, but actually it was relaxing and comforting.
Haunting craftsmanship of a musician trying to create a purity of his inner expressions. It's definitely not mainstream, but it's quite well done, and amazingly, in just two nights starting at 11PM each night. Another tragic author story.
Psychedelic version of jack johnson
4 estrelas, british folk rock de beleza sombria e melancólica.
1/10/25. First time hearing Nick Drake, very peaceful acoustic guitar and vocals. Really enjoyed this.
A very chill and calming album which was much needed because some of the past albums were a pain to listen to, but this was enjoyable.
had no idea what to expect & was very pleasantly surprised. the soothing vocals, stripped back acoustic guitar, & occasional piano riffs were really nice. only negative was with his mumbly lyrics
Melancholic masterpiece with interwoven hopeful melodies that can make a grown man cry. This album has been on my radar since 2011-2012, but I never really dove in and washed my mind with. What a magnificent album for those interested in Mumford, Abbott bros, Gregory Allan Isakov and all the 2010-2020 folk revival.
A gentle and intimate journey led by an acoustic guitar, absolutely wonderful songwriting throughout and Nick Drake’s soothing voice is right at home in this stripped back setting.
Delightfully melancholy. Guitar which tickles the ear. Soothing, numbing melodies 8/10
A lovely, intimate and bittersweet album.
nice ambiance, dreamy
My second nick drake album. Love this dude. Gotta get both on wax
Very easy listening. Arrangements were simple, but extremely effective. 28 minutes pushes this to a 4.
Deceivingly simple? On my first listen, this album felt a little basic, but enjoyable. The guitar was great at setting the mood and really driving the pace of the album. When I listened back and was listening closer to the lyrics, they had such an intriguing flow. Never ending right on the line, letting phrases and ideas linger on into the next phrase, almost hitting a peak in the middle of a line before lulling through the end, only to drive back up and down another peak.
Pretty good. I enjoyed this one.
Nick Drake was my first artist in this list and I really enjoyed that record. This one is good as well. Something about his lyrics and simple melodies really appeal to me.
I really liked this album, I would definitely relisten in the future.
Good
Short and sweet; first couple of tracks stand out the most.
Lekker rustig
beautiful acoustic tunes
грустно и классно, но не потрясно, хотя в целом крутой альбом
Kort, og hyggeligt. Skabt helt ind til benet. Kunne nemt høre den igen. 👌
Nick Drake må have verdens smukkest mest dragende stemme. Den stemme er som et stort vamset tæppe der smyger sig om ens sjæl og varmer én på kolde dage.
Pain so deep, a bittersweet gift. RIP, Nick Drake.
He did a great folk music
3.5
Great album
Really fantastic acoustic guitar work. Vocals and lyrics are solid.
The guitar playing on this is so captivating. It’s both intricate and sparse, neat and rough around the edges. Also the use of unorthodox tunings gives it an addictive eerie vibe.
Nice minimal album. Bloke and guitar
I like the rich, warm acoustic sound. Very simple and chill vibe. It's mood music and I like it. I like his guitar playing and find his breathy voice soothing. Favorites: Place to Be and Things Behind the Sun.
A chill easy listening album overcast by such a short life and amazing contribution to music
Sparser and shorter than Bryter Layter, just as poignant and original. I do bemoan who he must have been an influence on - quiet, depressed, and tedious singer-songwriters. But he’s a thing-in-itself. He’s far from boring and wants life as sad as he may have suffered. He wants things to work out. That’s what makes it so sad.
Haunting and beautiful.
I really liked Nick Drake's voice. The tempo and the instrument mash apps were really my favorite. I really liked how he sung and the slow, whisper-ish way he sung. Really enjoyed the vibe, good to just chill and read and anything really
Mellow acoutic, didn't realize I knew some of the songs. Pretty good.
Very cool album. Appreciated it more on second listen.
Nick Drake is another artist that I've confused With Nick Cave Tim Buckley Jeff Buckley Grant Lee Buffalo and maybe some others in a group of male singer songwriters even though none are the same. In fact I spent a good 20 minutes cursing Amazon for not having Nick Cave's Pink Moon before it was pointed out to me that it was Nick Drake. So this was my first knowingly listening to Drake. Though having listened to so many Wes Anderson soundtracks that I've felt like his sound is very much of the Anderson genre. I'm a fan though and I liked the album. And being only 28 minutes I was able to listen through a couple of times. The 2nd time most of the songs sounded the same but it's certainly an album that I'd add to my vinyl collection.
The only Nick Drake album I like
This is a very good contemplative album. Even without the "hit", the song you seemed to hear on a lot of advertisements for a while. It's one of the shortest albums I've heard on this list (except for a punk album or two), and I think the simplicity of the recording and the length lend to the effectiveness of it all. I think I had this album at one point, but I did not "get it" until this listen. It's really short, really simple, and really good. Top tracks: "Pink Moon," "Road," "Horn", "Know"
"Pink Moon" Nicka Drake’a to arcydzieło minimalistycznej muzyki folkowej.
Pretty, audible hot chocolate. Goes on to inspire nearly all of the singer-songwriter ilk. But this one is a cut above that rest.
Oh, I loved this. Just so wonderful and pleasant. “Pink Moon” and “From The Morning” are the best songs on the album, but all the songs are great. By far my favorite Nick Drake.
not sure why kendrick has such a problem with this guy he seems chill
I had never heard of Nick Drake, and I didn’t read any of the info or reviews about him, so I had no idea what I was getting into. For a while there, I thought I was listening to Jack Johnson. I really like the simplicity of this album, and think that it’s really held up well over 52 years. There are one or two selections I didn’t care for, but overall I really like this and will probably listen to it again in the future. To me this one sounds like it could’ve been recorded within the last few years.
Wow. This album came at the perfect time - it perfectly captured my mood and morning mood. Eating porridge and wrapping up in the cold air; it just felt correct. I love this kind of music so I’m surprised I have let it pass me by for so long. It must be said, lots of the songs sounded the same but I love this music, nick drake is my new icon.
Fun and soothing, just what I needed.
This is really a great album, and it's clear how massive it's influence is. I'd like to give it 5 stars, but this just isn't the type of thing I come back to much, despite it's mastery. I think I will catch up on the test of Nick Drake's work, though.
9.6 ★★★★½ Just an incredible gorgeous album

cozy acoustic folk music
Really enjoyed the last Nick Drake album and I think Kev mentioned that if I liked Five Leaves Left by Nick Drake, then I would probably enjoy Pink Moon by Nick Drake even more. I really like Nick Drake's voice. Kinda reminds me of Colin Hay. I really liked the guitar work on Which Will. It felt like the guitar strings were loosened. It gave it nice, fat sounding notes but still very precise. I would say that this Nick Drake album is on par with the last Nick Drake album. Good job, Nick Drake!
Strange back to back coincidence.
Back to back Nick Drake. Again, what a lovely sound Nick gets out of his guitar. Beautiful melodies, great lyrics.
For some reason I’m going to buy a VW today.
7/10. It's a really peaceful and pleasant album. Very minimal, but not in a bad way. The vocals are also really peaceful and pleasant. :)
I underrated this album in the past, maybe because I wasn't a fan of the folksier and smaller atmosphere this album brings but I think on this listen a lot more about the playing and the way Nick sings within these songs really opened up the album for me in a way I didn't really expect. I mean hell when Things Behind the Sun started playing I felt like I finally started getting this album, so yeah I think I massively underrated this one, it's a treat
++:Parasite, Harvest Breed +:Pink Moon, Place to Be, Road, Which Will, Horn, Things Behind the Sun, Know, From the Morning 7,0/10
I don't think I've heard this artist before, but something about the gentle, quiet singing and acoustic guitar feels completely out of time. If I didn't know this from looking up the album, I wouldn't have guessed this is from the 70's.
Cool artwork. I've never fully listened to this guy's music, although I am familiar with his name. Some really nice guitar work! Mellow music, somber vocals, beautiful album. I can hear this influence in some newer music (Father John Misty, Fleet Foxes, The Clientele, José González, etc.) I really enjoyed this, and I am now curious to listen to more of his catalog. I'm giving this a 4.
This was a nice album to explore. I do remember hearing Pink Moon on that car commercial which has apparently been etched into my memory despite being aired so long ago...but nothing else from him. His soft voice is warm and comforting like being wrapped in your grandma's quilt after coming in from the cold. A lot of artists were probably influenced by him.
Sad, sparse, and beautiful. I didn't even get into the lyrics yet but I can tell already there is something to dig into there. One song flowed into the next and blended for me in a good way. Made the whole thing feel cohesive. Also felt longer than the 28 minutes, also in a good way. Really look forward to listening to this again more in depth on a rainy day.
I was surprised i enjoyed this as much as I did. I liked it better then the other work I have heard from Nick Drake.
Really good album, especially when the mood is right.
Kinda sick actually! Very cool singer songwriter style with nice guitarplaying and only voice + acoustic. Like it! Wonder if Cat Stevens checked this out.
Title track was in a Volkswagon ad in 1999. Google came out in 1998. This was one of the first songs I located through the internet.
This album was akin to being hugged by my Mother. I appreciated the warmth and being able to hear artifacts such as the noise floor of instruments. 8/10
A quietly beautiful album.
So all three of Drake's albums are on this list. This is number three for me (so I'm through now). And yes, they're all very good. But they're also not that vastly different in the grand scale of things to warrant putting all three of them on this list.
A very melancholy, solemn, listenable album. Great guitar work, nice melodies. There is nothing truly groundbreaking here, but it was a pleasant experience overall.
SO GOOD I LOVE IT 9/10 ALBUM ITS SO GOOD
I've heard little about Nick Drake going into this album. From what I gather, he was an acoustic guitarist who released three solo albums and sadly overdosed at 26 years old. He sounded like someone dedicated to his work, often spending long nights writing songs and experimenting with his guitar techniques. That level of commitment shined on his final album Pink Moon. With just himself and his guitar save for some spare piano on the opening title track, Nick created this inviting, intimate atmosphere as he sings softly in his baritone range. I understand if it may be easy to paint the lyrics with the foreknowledge of the bout with depression Nick was going through at the time. Still, for me, the vivid imagery evoked in these songs gives off something more whimsical and adventurous. I listen to songs like "Road" and "Things Behind the Sun" and find myself in an exploratory mood, finding what lies out there in the world with a sense of curiosity. Aiding that emotional drive is the intricate guitar picking Nick pulled off here, which is more advanced than the typical singer-songwriter. I understand if a man with his guitar isn't always the most engaging music to listen to. Not to mention, a fair amount of these songs can come off as short and could have afforded to expand the individual narratives told. Nevertheless, there is something magical that resonates with Pink Moon, and it absolutely should be listened to.
Feels like the music to listen to by a campfire
Pink Moon is a hard one. In short bursts, it’s amazing. There are so many great songs, my favorite being “Things Behind the Sun”. However, as an album, it gets a little too samey and repetitive for me. I used to have it at a 7, but it’s gone up to an 8. Maybe it can eventually go even higher, if my tolerance for songs with only an acoustic guitar goes up.
i would say that this record is a bit anachronistic, something that seems like it should have been released in the 2000's than the 1970's, but given the corporate use of it in the VW Golf ad boosting US sales from 6,000 to 74,000, it might as well have come out in that time. maybe from that event, selling cars with the songs of a dead man, it primes one to be cynical about Pink Moon; i cannot muster it. it's one of those things where the simplicity and tenderness of the thing makes it feel impactful. Pink Moon is a well crafted quilt with very few flourishes sown upon it, but it's warm and reliable nonetheless. no matter the purpose, it's a good thing someone dug it out of the attic.
Pretty solid overall, had a nice voice
Really nice album. Sad but beautiful
When this came up I was not looking forward to listening to it. I wound up enjoying it more than I thought I would.
Very relaxing
Classic in my book. My favorite of his albums. Was in my regular rotation for while.
Pink Moon - Nick Drake Beautiful, stripped-back pure. The breathy mellow vocals work stunningly with some of the most intricate melodic guitar playing I’ve heard. The lyrics are simple but emotive, give a moving insight into deep depression & longing. Testimony to the power of songwriting. Favs: Pink Moon, Place To Be, From The Morning 8/10
Tranquilote
Good album, I think Hope would like this one
