Very different to his album from 2 years prior "What's Going On", but still has that fantastic Marvin voice with a musical heaven backing him up. Okay... I guess I'll listen to one of my all time favorites... again. Fair warning ANY Marvin album is gonna get a 5 from me.

I love this album. The only problem is it’s too short.

I mean, it's just like one of the best R&B/soul albums ever. Also, it's so incredibly saucy, but it feels so genuine that it doesn't come off as vulgar at all. It's just really easy to listen to as well, it's so smooth. And it's absolutely iconic, the first few seconds of the first song have become a meme, but I just think it shows how immediately the vibe of the album is conveyed.

There is just nothing like this and I don’t know what I could say that hasn’t already been said.

Brilliant. What an album. Every song was emotional, the lyricism and range is divine. Just excellent.

The epitome (start?) of slow jam. The opening twang of the title track is iconic, the song is a beauty. Side one is pretty awesome, even if Keep Gettin It On is a little too close of a reprise - If I Should Die Tonight is a soulful gem that if you don't know, you need to know it. Side two isn't as good, though Come Get to This and Distant Lover are solid and sultry. You Sure Love to Ball tries too hard but Just To Keep You Satisfied is a nice soaring ballad. The album is a clear 4 and part of me doesn't want to go higher because it's not as good as What's Going On. But given that thousands if not millions of babies were conceived thanks to these jams, I'll give it a bump. The album just oozes sexiness. There may not be another album quite like it.

Let's get it on is a song that is impossible to listen to and not tap your foot, sway a little, and eventually start singing. It's also the only song I've heard on this album. After listening to it, I threw it on again and I think it transcends time. It was solid in 1973 and it could have been released by Bruno Mars last year (featuring Gucci Mane of course).

No misses. All great songs and great performances. Kind of comical listening to this on a plane by myself but was totally into it regardless.

I try, if I can, to write comprehensive reviews of albums, reviews that deal with theme as well as content, that examine how I see an album in it’s historical, social, political and, of course, musical context. It’s a fun exercise, but the amount of material I’m able to get from an album depends heavily on my relationship to the genre, to the artist, and to the theme. I’m usually able to muster a good 1000 words for an album or genre I know and love, or a project I’m new to, but which deals with a theme or style I can talk at length about. I could easily do a 1000 words or more about What’s Going On. But how can you criticise an album that somebody has already perfectly described as ‘Sex -The Album?’ I don’t like it as much as What’s Going On, obviously, but it’s still a great soul album. This has got to be the sexiest album ever recorded. Volumes have been written about Gaye's artistic direction on this record and the pivotal impact it had on funk, soul, quiet storm, R&B, and rock, so I'll refrain from adding to the noise. I do want to point out that Gaye barely sings a cohesive verse or chorus on this entire album. None of the songs follow a typical poetic pattern or rhyming structure; indeed, most songs are just Marvin absolutely crooning and crushing ad-libs over the most sensual Motown backing band ever assembled. It would not work for anyone except him, and frankly, I'm surprised there is only one background moaning track. Stand out tracks include "Let's Get It On", "If I Should Die Tonight", "Distant Lover", "You Sure Love To Ball", and "Just To Keep You Satisfied".

Absolute fucking gold!! This album is the quintessence of all that is sexy and romantic. Beginning with the slightly cheesy and overplayed yet perfect timeless titular track, it weaves through 8 songs of pure soulful splendor. Marvin Gaye's voice reaches heights accompanied by melodies and progressions that define classic soul and mo-town and yet also transcends them as well. A true leader in the scene. Honestly every one of these songs is dripping in sensuality and would accompany any romantic setting with ease. Even 50 years later, these songs hit just as hard as they did when they were released and his memory will live on eternal through his art. Rest in power Marvin!

Much like Aretha Franklin, it’s so clear from listening to even just one song that Marvin Gaye was in a league of his own. And also much like Aretha, I think he has a permanent spot in the list of the best male vocalists of all time. If he isn’t on that list somewhere, the list is invalid by default. And what a stage setter Let’s Get It On is as an opening track. By far one of the most legendary opening songs to any album from the early 70’s. If you aren’t immediately in love with Marvin from hearing his voice, are you even human? It’s instantly accessible, and anybody can find enjoyment in listening to that man sing with the delicacy and power of one thousand other men. This album contains some of the most beautiful, intimate and emotionally driving soul music ever written. Every song is genius, and the band is excellent all throughout, especially when they bring in orchestral elements like the strings. It adds another level of sophistication that I love to hear in this kind of music. But really all of the highs on this come from Marvin’s singing. It is awe inspiring the things he was capable of writing and singing about at such a young age. Granted, he was 34, but there are people now at age 34 who wish they could be as talented as him. In his time, he created some of the most cherished and personal love songs ever, and they fill my heart with joy. It’s the kind of experience you will not find anywhere else in music. Rating: 9/10

For my money this is one of the best "soul" albums of all time. Certainly in the top 10.

I've heard the song, "Let's Get It On," but without the context of the whole album, the classic R&B just doesn't appeal to me. However, listening to the entire album, it really is amazing, flows so well, is performed perfectly, and obviously has had such a huge impact. For me, I'd probably put it at 4 stars, but I have to give it 5 stars for the impact and influence.

A lot of great songs - I remembered most of the album. Been many years so a delightful reminder of how awesome Marvin Gaye has always been. Many used in movies, so will be familiar to most people.

Marvin Gaye slays

I've listened to Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, but this my first time listening to this album. I was immediately blown away by the title track. I've heard "Let's Get It On" countless times, but usually when I hear it, I'm trying to make sex jokes and sing the 'wah-wah' guitar parts. But this song is incredible. The singing is passionate and oozes sex, and the musical arrangements are incredibly rich and full of little details that add to the depth of the sound. The album kept it up on the next track,"Please Don't Stay," with some excellent percussion, and even more fantastic signing. The opening strings on "If I Should Die Tonight" provide a sharp contrast to what the album had sounded like so far, but the song brilliantly shifts into a slower jam. "Keep Gettin' It On" was a brilliant reprise of the title track, and I liked the political lyrics featured in it. I loved the bongos and cymbals on "Come Get To This," and "Distant Lover" had a great bass line and some great distorted guitar sounds as well. To close out the album, there were some great saxophone parts on "You Sure Love To Ball" and the slow "Just To Keep You Satisfied." This album was fantastic from start to finish, and I really loved listening to it. Let's Get It On is a shining example of soul, and shows why Marvin Gaye was of the best singers and songwriters of the seventies.

Sometimes the stupidity of, and lack of creativity by, the human race really disappoints me. All those endangered species??? Simple to fix! So glad we got both of the Marvin Gaye albums, and that they were in the correct timeline order. Both of them are different, yet show the similarity that he knows what he is doing. This moves. A change of pace alright. SO DIFFERENT to the turgid stuff in this part of the 1001 list.So slick and lush and almost painfully sensual (this makes the mainstream stuff others were playing feel cold and remote...an aside on album art - fonts aside - the cover photo is modern, still). This album moves... what a voice, and style. tight band. If this is his first attempt at funk, he nails it. ... and he isnt even at "sexual healing" (that was 10 years later!) , but he is on the topic already, as captured on the wikipedia page for this album. ...this deserves to be on the list. and I like it. An easy, so easy, 5 and I am just 3 tracks in.

It's easy to think of the title track as almost a cliché of 70s smooth soul, but listening to it fresh and in context, it's hard to deny how compelling it is. It is the jewel in the crown of this album, which is a sensuous and rapturous template for so much slow jam, lover man soul to come. While the remaining tracks might not rise to the level of the title track, I find is a consistently great album to listen to all the way through. I would listen to Marvin Gaye, here at the height of his powers, sing the telephone book. This album is not quite as great as What's Going On, but this would be a career pinnacle for almost any other artist. 4.5 stars, rounding up.

I’ve probably heard this more than any other album ever. This time through I tried an experiment and listened to it more as a metaphor about bringing more love into our lives in every way. Of course it’s an album about sex and romantic love. But I think Marvin had a much broader version of love in mind too. He’s pretty straightforward about it at times but also I think he just had his love dial turned up. Try walking around with the security of If I Should Die Tonight (if you can manage it), the openness of Let’s Get it On, and the joy of Keep Getting It On, and the world is a beautiful place.

Marvin Gaye died years before I was born, but goddamn if he didn't just make sweet sonic love to my ears.

I've heard many Marvin Gaye songs but have never delved into his albums and I regret it. Only 8 songs long and not a single one of them is a dud. As much as Gaye dove into social and political themes on his "What's Going on?" album, he made this a romantic, sexy-time album. It's amazing how he can transition so quickly between what each albums was focused on. This is a must-listen.

Must be the pinnacle of this sub-genre of seduction soul. Perfect craft.

I’m a new person now. This album changed me. Possibly the most sensual album I’ve ever listened to. There’s a raw sexuality to it but when the strings or the sax comes in it adds some sort of romance to it. Such a simple thing to base an album off of but it does it so completely. The jazzy and funk inspired tracks blend seamlessly with the ballads. Essential listening!!!

Featuring such songs as "Let's Get it On, "Keep Gettin' It On," and my favorite, "You Sure Love to Ball," this is a steamy album. Its liner notes even refer to "one's genitals." Soulful and sexy, this is fairly perfect.

It did not hurt my feelings at all to listen to these smooth sounds. So sexy!! Honestly, there were a couple of moments in my multiple listens that I had the thought that some of the lyrical content was a little over the top for me, but it didn't stop me from starting the album over again once it finished.

Making us all want to Get It On is what Marvin Gaye does best.

Smooth, sexy and sweet. The music casts an irresistible spell. There’s also an air of melancholy over a lot of these songs. There are a lot of lyrics about wanting a lover back or yearning for a new love who hasn’t quite agreed to “get it on” just yet. The closing track “Just to Keep You Satisfied” captures this romantic sadness exceptionally well. What a voice. Just impossibly, superhumanly beautiful.

Following up the most important and powerful album in then-recent memory would be a daunting task but Marvin turned this album into an ode for sexual magnetism and raunchy good times. Yet another step in the right direction in a decade where R&B and Soul found its footing and stamped its legacy. Essential listening.

Motown classic. I think there is not much to say.

Perfect soul album, simple as. Gaye is a master of fitting in just the right number of sounds, and each one seems distinctive on top of it. The runtime makes for an easy fit, but every minute is rich. And there's a slight bend toward tragedy.

The fact that he was able to take his unprecedented daddy issues and turn them into a joyful document encouraging the world to enjoy sex is something of a marvel. Marvin Gaye was so exceptional he even did all of his own background vocals here.

Come Get To This is my favorite song in the album which as a whole contains great R&B. Reminds me of sitting on a rooftop in the city watching the sunset.

Never disappoints. I think there are more bangers on this album than pop culture will admit. Let’s get it on is great. But this whole album was great.

Listened to this in headphones and it really blew my mind. Every song was great but really loved “Distant Lover” and “Sure Like To Ball”

One of the horniest albums I’ve ever heard, and in a good way. This is my favorite Marvin Gaye album, it plays to all of his strengths and is so soulful and sensual from start to finish. The title track is just so impressive.

Very soulful. The voice is amazing. Some of the slower parts blend together a bit though.

Perhaps this album could be the solution to the failing birthrate. I got What's Going On not too long ago and this album has the same issue where the whole album is good, but the title track is such a masterpiece that it takes up all the spotlight. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

For those that don't know, Originally Marvin was a crooner. He wore a velvet suit and sang music that a lot of you are here because. He wanted to break out and do more social conscious stuff and had to fight for What's Going On, the album before this one. So he had to go back to his more crooner stuff. So he made this. More soul/funk inspired than his older stuff, yet still smooth as hell. Again, a lot of us are here because of him and more specific, this album. It's been on repeat all day for me. I love it. It's got everything you want from a soul album. It's not as strong thematically as What's Going On, but it doesn't have to be. It's a great album to just have playing at your house, because it's that damn good.

Great album but not my favourite from MG and bit dated now - thematically one dimensional. Still the songs are classics and of their time

I messed up the instuctions and somehow got myself pregnant. So smoooooth. This is some good babymaking music.

It’s basically sex music Marvin definitely had soul, and this is just a great laid back album, where you can feel the atmosphere of the room they were in and the connection of the musicians.

Great babymaking tunes

Marvin Gaye, a legend of soul music with a soft buttery voice that even through the decades is still one of the most well known and part of that is due to the title track on this album. This album is all about one thing and we all know what that is. I mean come on it starts with Let's Get It On and three tracks later, Marvin makes sure you know by adding in a follow up track in Keep Gettin' It On. This album is a classic and is great all the way through.

Chill, relaxing, lovely, good study music. I just did not like Track 5: Come Get to This, because of the tom-toms or whatever percussion it was. Track 8 is kinda sad, but still good. 9/10

The only criticism I have is this album is 31:44, which is approximately 31:24 longer than I need it to be.

I really like the old vibe of this album. The beats and the vocal of each song brings a type of nostalgia to me even though I wasnt even alive when this album was released 9/10

i really enjoyed this album, 7/10, best album i’ve been given so far. me and my friends talk about gay a lot because ye good a lot of “best of all time lists” and whilst none of us love him we all agree he’s a very “agreeable” artist, e.g we all don’t mind listening to him and we all understand when he tops a best of all time list, this reenforced that idea in my mind

Prime Marvin. Obviously great, but I prefer introspective Marvin over grown-and-sexy Marvin. Will reach for What's Going On, Here My Dear, and especially I Want You over this one most days.

What an iconic album. Never listened to it in full but the first three notes immediately struck a feeling of embarrassment and laughter due to the many jokes associated with the title track. What really hooked me was the song “If I Should Die Tonight”. A song that makes a love sounds so surreal that if we were to die we had to let our lover know what we would be missing if we had to leave. Great album. 8/10 for sure.
