Man that title track is good. The rest is good too but doesn’t quite get there again. Just shy of a 5.
Smooth soul on top of a bed of jazzy sounding music. Very good but not doesn't have the same political consciousness of What's Going On. Low 4
While the opening track is absolutely fantastic, I honestly felt like the rest of the album was pretty boring. "Let's Get It On" is a great song once you get over how society has turned it into a parody of itself. The song grooves and you can really hear his passion, but then.... where does it go? Of course Marvin Gaye is a great songwriter with a fantasticly pure voice, but with the exception of "Distant Lover" there just was not enough dynamism in most of these songs for me to really get into them. "You Sure Love To Ball" was the best example of this idea for me. To be clear there is nothing "bad" about this album, but I just was not really struck by anything on here. 3.5 if possible but I’ll round up
Maybe THE most iconic start to an album with a same song/album title. I mean it's Mavin Gaye. It's Let's Get It On. It's short, it's powerful, it's amazing. It's before it's time. Yeah :)

A little one note
Let's Get It On is so smooth and fluid that it washes right over me without making an impression. The drums and strings sound impeccable, and the songs are largely formless, buoyed by Gaye's vocals. Despite that, I find this fairly lightweight musically; nothing jumps out at you and there's very little distinctive about it. The formlessness of the songs can go from relaxing and hypnotic to meandering. Of course you're not here for the music, but as impressive as Gaye's vocals are they're also very polite and reined-in. If Gaye is as horny as these lyrics imply, I wish a little bit of that passion would come through. There are plenty of soul albums with more feeling behind them than this one. If you're a fan of pretty voices and laid-back jams, this album is for you. But I find it a little too similar to other smooth soul to get hot and bothered by it.
How do you follow up such an iconic title track in your album? You don't really, apparently. You just riff around the same theme, even essentially reprising the song. But when the title track is so good you can hardly blame him. Lesson from this album is that Marvin fuuuuucckkksss. 4/5.

No me gustó porque no es el estilo musical que yo escucho. Las primeras.eras canciones muy buenas pero el álbum en sí es medio aburrido.
Har Doo-wop træk og er proto-quiet storm. Det er genre som er præget af natlig blød elegance som peger mod slow jams osv. ellers er det soul/smooth soul som har rødder i Gospel og RnB men blødere og mere fløjelsesagtigt. Meget mere intimt end feks what's going on synes jeg. Man bliver jo næsten helt liderlig af at høre det her. Der er også en smule funk men det tror jeg ikke at jeg selv identificerede på albummet. Jeg tror det vigtigste jeg tager fra det er at det er virkelig langsomt og sensuelt og også fritgørende og forløsene på en eller anden underlig måde. Jeg synes virkelig det er godt.

Now this is classic soul and there is no faulting the song ‘let’s get it on’, which is simply a masterpiece. Unfortunately the rest of the album feels a bit too much one note for my liking. ‘Keep getting it on’ as the tigle suggests tries to rely on the glory of the opening track, but falls short.
I felt like I was intruding on a private moment listening to this album. Obviously it’s Marvin Gaye, so it’s pretty great at a basic level. But it didn’t hit like “What’s Going On?” for me.
Some songs have reached the level of fame and recognition that I find it weird to think they were once just a track written to go on an artist's 12th album. There was a world, not even that long ago comparatively, where the song Lets Get It On didn't exist! Bizarre to compute. The fact there's a reprise (Keep Getting It On) half way through the album could be seen as a little lazy on a 33 minute album, but the chutzpah of it made me laugh out loud, so I'm giving it a pass. It's all great. It's all very soulful. It's all very much intented to be consumed in a very specific setting (and so is a little odd if you are actually just drinking a massive cup of tea and eating your breakfast like I was while listening to it). I liked What's Going On better as an album, but did I like it a whole star better? Not really, but as it can't get a 4.5, it's gonna have to be a: 4/5

Even though the style is a bit specific in its theme, it's smooth and enjoyable to listen to. It has jazz undertones, even though it's identified as soul, and the vocals match the instrumentals so well.

This was unexpectedly enjoyable for the sort of smooth soul I'm not usually a fan of. Think Marvin has the perfect voice for this, with a little edge to it where he can add a bit more character to the louder parts. Musically was a good balance between a live sound while still being well recorded. It's still not my preference and I wouldn't intentionally go back to it but of all the albums like this we've had it's my favourite.
Let's Get It On is an all time smooth great track. The rest sound suspiciously similar to Let's Get It On - chord progression, vocals, themes. Doesn't take away - if the album was 40 minutes, I would have quickly ran out of patience.
Smooth as. Actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would. But there are definitely a few extra "let's get it on along" likes on there. I'd had enough by the end and it was very short anyway, not a good sign 2.5
Beautiful soul masterclass. Every track was filled with heart and passion, the pure spirit of love exploding. Wonderful vocal deliveries, instrumentals, and the flow was indescribable.

Classic opener lol seriously its a banger i love it Second song is good but nothing too crazy still nice quality I enjoy the percussion and his vocals towards the end. Third song is very sensual and the sax is beautiful. Vocals are wonderful. Fourth song.... I know this is going to be one of my all time favourites. Never listened to Marvin Gaye before but always meant to and now I'm kicking myself for not doing it earlier. Fifth song, sixth song were good as well but I think I'll need more time with it before I love it. Seventh song is really good though the moaning threw me off for a quick minute Eighth song is the most sexy and sensual yet and it's fantastic.... then it turns quite sad and melancholic whilst still keeping that beauty. 8 songs, 31 mins. Fantastic stuff, will be coming back to this later. Rating off the first listen: 9/10

This is #day587 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here's my first out of three Marvin Gaye records represented on the list. I'm revisiting this record after today, my day 700+, when I got a D'Angelo album, and decided to give some past soul entries, like Hot Buttered Soul, another chance. When I was done with the latter and rerated it, I remembered this one. The jazzy, funky side of the instrumentation is particularly appealing and it all sounds delicious on my Technics SU-7300. I'm settling on a 4 out of 5 eventually. Looking forward to #day588.

The songs were just.. boring? I was certainly not in the right mood for this, and I can see why this type of music might be called baby-making music. But I still probably wouldn't put it on in a romantic setting considering how cheesy it would be. At least the album was short!

Ugh, this is one of those releases that solely relies on one hit. "Let's Get it On" is a great song, and "Distant Lover" is pretty good, but the rest of this is just uninteresting filler, including a reprise of the first track. Really not essential, but Marvin's performance and legacy is too damn good for a low low score. 2/5

Hard to dislike! As quintessential a collection of love songs as you'll ever find. Not all the songs are memorable, but they're all romantic and smooth. As great as his 1960s songs were, it'll always have been a great thing for Marvin Gaye to have started writing and producing his own records in the 1970s.

Marvin Gaye is the king of Take Your Panties Of Music. Let's be serious that hundreds of thousands of children, the the low end, have been conceived cause someone put on the title track to this album. I mean to be fair, and serious, I'm sure plenty of babies were also born to the rest of the album, but that first song it's the hook that pulls you into the groove that will make your special person take their undies off. Let's keep being fair and serious while we're at it you can also take your undies off while listening to this album even if you don't have a special person no reason to not. If we're also going to be fair, serious, and honest you don't need this album to get naked, but you can look very good while doing it to this album. 5 Stars.

I’ve listened to What’s Going On a few times, so it was interesting to “move on” to this album which is a much more traditional collection of (amazing) songs with a more upbeat sort of flair. It helped me understand more what makes What’s Going On a singular sort of work and adds a lot of depth to Gaye’s overall artistic project.
The music is good, the performance is good, the mixing is good, but does Mr. Gaye know how to write songs about anything else? It's 31 minutes of the same song 8 different times. I can say he's definitely good at the 1 thing he does, but no way does it compare the more diverse all timers on here. 3.0/5

The title track is a classic. Interesting that there's a "Keep Gettin' It On" track too. The rest of the album has the same vibe but the songs don't stand out as much.
One of those one's I'm grading on a bit of a curve, since it would likely be a 5 star if a typical artist released it.
I don't know that you get Childish Gambino or D'Angelo or Prince without this. & even when it kind of melts over you as opposed to hooking you, it's still such a smooth listen.

Oh thank goodness we’re back to the ‘70s in the land of good music and recordings. This album kind of just went over my head a bit with its steady vamps all album long but there’s a lot of great arrangement and production touches here and there. The vocals are soulful as hell though maybe a bit too yearning at times but I can feel the genuine emotion so it’s all good. Although this album kind of floated by without much to hold onto on the first listen, it’s still a pretty interesting take on soul music and I’m just so relieved to be back in this era after enduring another crappy album from the ‘90s yesterday.

I usually rank ‘Let’s Get It On’ below ‘What’s Going On’, ‘Here, My Dear’ and ‘I Want You’ in my head-canon of Marvin Gaye albums. I hadn’t listened to ‘Let’s Get It On’ properly in a very long time until today. I’ve tended to dismiss it as seductive but ultimately safe, one of Gaye’s weaker efforts. Perhaps I was wrong. It probably still suffers from having too few ideas to fully flesh out the record the way his best albums do, but it might be better than I give it credit for.

What a voice! Superbly produced and arranged. Soul and R&B isn't really my go-to but this is a very good album and even I'm aware that "Let's Get It On" remains the gold standard for romantic soul. Very close between four and five stars. It’s that jam style that he goes for in his album, which if you want something going in the background is awesome but not very interesting for listening focused. 8/10

56 albums ago I reviewed Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?", and had this to say: "Hm, let's see what's up next... Marvin Gaye! I don't know much Marvin Gaye, let me think... "Let's Get It On", "Sexual Healing"... Ah, so this is gonna be a sultry, sexy album. ~35 excellent minutes later~ Okay, I wasn't expecting anything so deep and political... and I *certainly* wasn't expecting so much about God and Jesus. Had no idea Marvin Gaye contained so many multitudes." Apparently *this* is the album I was expecting... but I also can't even call it *the* sex album, because sexual healing isn't even on it! This was pretty good, I certainly didn't hate it... but I think the best thing it did for me was renew my appreciation for the other album. This one certainly is more one-note, and less deep and interesting... but it's musically solid. I'll happily give it a 4. ...And with that, my incredible 5 album streak of 5's has come to an end. It had to happen eventually!

Highlights: Let's Get It On, If I Should Die Tonight, Come Get To This, Distant Lover Easy task for today, Gaye is a classic for a good reason. Here he displays his sexy mode and he does it in a gentle way throughout the whole record. The gentleness fits perfectly with a good number of songs which talk about heartbreak and reunion - an act where the hearts aren't racing but a bit more careful and tender. Such a nice fit. His vocals are full of emotion and they are, as it always is with him, the star of the show. I find it a shame that the record is a bit of a rollercoaster doe - one moment you have a weeping track, then a sexy track and once again a weeping one... I got the impression that the emotional highs and lows are evenly represented, so maybe he could have made one side be a sexy side and the other one be a reminiscing one. But that's kind of a nitpicky thought.

I've already listened to this album, but it has been a while since I gave it a listen. I've grown up listening to punk rock and electronic music, so hearing artists like Marvin Gaye felt like a whole new world. This album makes me feel I'm sitting next to the fireplace, cuddled up with someone special, just enjoying each other's company and presence. The melodies and the vocal performances always amaze me with how complex they seem, and how it almost seems like they freestyled the entire album. Marvin Gaye will always be one of the greatest artists of all time to me, and this album definitely helped me expand my small music taste at the time. Rest in peace
This is a good album, the only thing is I always listen to the albums when I'm taking my kid to school, so that was a little awkward. Overall though, the album was great, with some tracks stronger than others. Maybe a bit repetitive, but I'm not sure that's an issue with this one.

La verdad me gustó muchísimo, un saludo 10/10, no sé que estilo de música es pero es muy parecido o el mismo a sade o a lo que escucho de vez en cuando en una playlist que tengo. Sin duda lo voy a agarrar en mis favoritos y seguro lo voy a escuchar seguido. Ya está guardado en mi biblioteca.

unmatched music for having just gotten out of the shower. much has been said about this as a follow up to/pairing with whats going on....The Times versus All Time, The World versus Human Beings, Articulated Thought versus Primal Feeling ect ect, its all true and magical. feels maybe slightly more song-oriented than whats going on but thats maybe only because of the emphasis on those luxurious repeated refrains....this is still every bit as much a hypnotic suite, with an even more melty and lush quality. theres p much nothing here that makes the record feels less than stellar at its own aims....the androgyny of the register gaye often keeps his voice in even feels like it transcends the actual politics of sex to just an appreciation of Bodies and Closeness in any way that resonates. two of the most eternal albums ever, surely...a world in which theyre not loved is a world in which every base idea of what music is and should be is unrecognizable.
I only knew the title track before listening. It's a good song. Good album overall. I thought if I Should Die Tonight was quite lovely.

Great
Marvin Gaye makes some of the most musical sounds of any biped. From Growling, to smooth or soaring sweetness across all the register, as he does here within the first 40 seconds of Let's Get It On. His best work is not just the result of the quality of his voice. For me the magic is in the beauty of backing singing, either contapuntally or as a refain, which compliment him perfectly, because it's usually him as well. Unfortunately, beyond the title track the strength of these 9 songs, just isn't very high. The presence of Keep Getting it On, (effectively a reprise of the title track) means that a single musical idea comprises 26% (I did the maths) of a 31 minute album, and the other 7 tracks are only suitable as backing tracks for 1970s TV commercials.

Look, it's never going to be as good as "What's Going On." But, purely on vibes, this album is amazing. Prime bedroom material. The quality slips here and there, but it's pretty excellent. 8/10

Did not expected to like it that much. I didn't know this album before but it took me one second of the first song to be like "What?! This is that?!" So yes it seems I knew at least one song. Overall solid album, enjoyed it probably will listen to it again. Perfect music for evening with book I guess.

I love the album artwork for this, it gives a sense of passion that is obvs present in music but in a totally different way. And it really is an album about passion, the smoothest of listening experiences. Other than that, I’m not sure what I, a millennial white woman, can really add?
Suffers a bit from the fact that the title track is now like the go-to comedy song about fucking, and that just when that's gone there's another song halfway through that's called 'Keep Gettin' It On' where it's the exact same beat and the message is 'no, let's all remember that song about fucking that they'd use for the bit in an Adam Sandler film when he gets an erection'. It makes it kinda hard to evaluate it on its own merit, but for what it's worth this is some nice soul music. THAT SAID I procrastinated by reading up on the background to this record and Marvin Gaye writing about sex in general as a means to get over childhood trauma and it's very interesting, so I'm adding a star

it's wonderful. for some reason, I wasn't absolutely enamored and blown away and floored like everyone else in the world, but I think that's the fault of Rolling Stone and everyone else who says this album is the best piece of media ever created and is a message from God theyself. still wonderful and I think I can muster up a 5
Love an album that is strong and to the point. I can't wait to listen to socially conscious Gaye and ex-husband Gaye in the near future.
What in the name of soul?
a very nearly perfect album. defined both a genre and a movement. absolutely transformative music with the kind of staying power rivaled only perhaps by the beatles (though influences obviously go in different directions). marvin gaye is in the holy trinity of Motown for me (Jackson 5, Gaye, Stevie Wonder), and without this work, we don't have like half of the R&B/soul/etc. catalogue that we have today. the first time i heard "Let's Get it On", I *think* it was in the context of a shitty meme, but once I actually listened to the album, I was like what the *fuck*, this is glorious! this album absolutely fucks. in the most joyous and least bizarre way i can articulate this, i feel like so much love has been made to this album (tied perhaps by teenaged millennials in the late 2000s listening to the Panic! debut album from 2005) and i have to think that's what marvin gaye would have wanted. i don't think you can listen to this album and hate anyone at all. it's all love, man. the sax in "If I Should Die Tonight" heals something in my soul every time i listen to it. fuck.
I've never listened to much Marvin Gaye, but I have always known he's regarded as music royalty. This album was a vibe all the way through, but I can't think of a time where I'd throw it on or fit it into the rotation.
Silky smooth and criminally short. The album does suffer a bit by having one of the greatest songs ever written as the opening track. Every other song is a 4/5 out of 5, but they’re always a bit of a letdown in comparison. Very very conflicted between a 4.5 and a 5, but I will round up out of respect.
Stevie, Marvin, and D'Angelo are my holy trinity. I'm not sure I love anyone's voice more than I love Marvin's. His music is timeless, exciting, refreshing, and always leaves me wanting more. 'I Want You' is not on this list, but it is most certainly essential listening for those unfamiliar with his discography. I really think Marvin knows his voice on a more personal note than most other artists and singers ever do. How to strain it in the right place, what that does for the whole composition, etc., "If I Should Die Tonight" being the prime example.

This album was a huge let down after previously reviewing “what’s going on”. There’s just a whole lot of forgettable tracks that all sound similar to the last. No big deviation from sound. I will concede that like always the production on this album is amazing it’s so gentle and buttery smooth. And most importantly I can’t downplay how significant “let’s get it on” is in all of pop culture. It’s nearly impossible to separate this song from the idea of having sex, it’s so synonymous with sex it’s the go to gag song for characters about to get it on in every tv show and movie for the past 40/50 years! That’s no small accomplishment when most songs are about sex to begin with so to the “THE sex song” is a real feat. But yah one song can not carry a whole album very far, it may drive record sales but it doesn’t work as a whole album.
Apparently Marvin is as one note as Biggie, except Marvin wants to make love instead.
There’s none better than Margin Gaye’s song Let’s Get It On. His soulful voice, over a sultry mix of drums, horns and guitar while he’s passionately pleading to “get it on” is as soothing as it must have been provocative at the time of its release. So good. So good. The rest of the album takes a back seat to the opening song, but it is filled with R&B songs of love and desire. Gaye is thought to be a pioneer in the Soul music genre and you can see those roots growing here in this album.
Let’s Get it On and then a bunch of other songs that want to be Let’s Get it On. One song does not a great album make. Sonic sexual harassment.

Ooooh starting strong with Let's Get It On, such a classic. Also enjoyed Come Get To This, pretty catchy. Is he flirting with me now?? I never realized his songs were so suggestive omg (You sure Love To Ball), I had never paid attention to the lyrics. Same for the other songs actually. Just To Keep You Satisfied: "You set my souuuuuul on fire, my one desire..". Loved the crack in his voice. Overall, I love his voice. Feels like he's pouring all his love and desire on us, through his words and his vibe.

What is there to say? This is the type of music you can listen to at any time, anywhere, with anyone (except You Sure Love To Ball maybe) Of course the album is sexy but the tunes are so pleasant to the ear I would put this on with any type of company just not on full throttle. At 31 minutes the album doesn't overstay its welcome, so even if the songs sound pretty similar, I wasn't annoyed at all. Best songs are If I Should Die Tonight and Let's Get It On. 9/10, makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Talk about baby makin’ music, Let’s Get It On is the ultimate in baby makin’ music. Marvin Gaye came up in Motown essentially singy poppy, mainstream love songs. At a certain point, Gaye told Berry Gordy, the owner and leader of Motown, that he wanted to do his own thing, make sexy songs, make songs with important social commentary. Gordy basically was like Michael Jordan in the 90s; Republicans buy sneakers too. Gordy didn’t want to take a chance on alienating a large part of Gaye’s audience, meaning, the white part. Finally, Gaye won out, and we got albums like Let’s Get It On and What’s Goin’ On. This album also marks Gaye’s first toe into the funk pool. Track one is the title track, and it’s undeniable. I can’t fathom how many children were conceived while this song was playing. It’s got a groove the fellows can appreciate and lyrics that women can appreciate. Track two, Please Don’t Stay (Once You Go Away), is a funk jam. It’s got everything you need, and I don’t know that I don’t like it more than Let’s Get It On. I’d like to learn to play the bongos. Or I guess I could just get some and play them. I’m not sure the bongos are the hardest instrument to learn. In fact, it’s not even an instrument. It’s percussion. All I need is rhythm, really. The bongos are low-key the sexiest element of most love jams. Track 3, If I Should Die Tonight, finds Marvin telling his woman that if he died tonight, he’d die happy because he met her. That’s smooth. Great strings are used in this song. Very good. Was not a single, seems weird. Track four seems to be a Let’s Get It On reprise, huh? It’s called Keep Gettin It On…Huh? I guess they needed another song to fill time, and they figured, why not bring it back one more again? This one seems a little more like for the world to get it on, like make love not war. Even the good Lord seems to be behind the message as Marvin sings at one point, “Oh, Jesus is trying to get the people to come on (ooh) To get it on Yes, lord, oh, get it on (get it on, got to get it on).” There you have it. The power of Christ compels you to get it on. Track five, Come Get To This, brings a sax along for the ride with more bongos. However, there's something in the music mix that sounds like someone banging one of those Native American drums you buy for kids with the rubber drum head. It doesn’t sound like a real drum. It’s pitched a little higher. It’s really out of place and taking me out of the song. Otherwise, it’s good. Again, Marvin needs this girl’s love. Marvin might need to think about getting some therapy. His world seems to revolve around one thing. Track 6, Distant Lover, catches me right off the jump. Great background vocals, old school Motown groove that’s funked up. Marvin is so smooth. He has a powerful voice, but he can also be very quiet and controlled. Now this song also has a mystery sound in the mix that I can’t figure out, but it sounds excellent. It’s kind of like a video game sound. It must be a keyboard sound. Very weird. It seems the song has been built around this sound. Great song though. The backing vocals are incredible. Here comes a trumpet solo. Damn, this song rules. Yep, just as I thought. It was the last single released from the album. The strings are now coming in. Wow! This is my favorite song on the album and maybe my favorite Marvin Gaye song. He is just belting it in the end. Incroyable, as the French say. Track 7 begins with a woman in full flagrante as she’s arrived, so to speak. Oh, I see why, the song is called You Sure Love To Ball. I mean, Marvin loved the ladies, or at least wanted us all to think so. This song is great too. Strings are stringing, sax is saxing, Marvin is balling….Oh snap! Is that a baritone sax?!? Heck yeah! For those of a younger generation, to ball means to….well, you know. This is literally baby-making music. Great song. I’m sure there was no way in hell this could have been played on the radio in 1973. Oh, double snap! It was the third single on the album!!!! How did this get played on the radio? It’s explicitly about sex, and a woman has the big O to start off the song. Amazing! Second best song on the album for me. The last song, Just To Keep You Satisfied, is a soulful ballad with Marvin doing his best to tell his ex how much he loved her in bed, but outside the bedroom, she was a nightmare. I think this song was autobiographical because he had some fidelity issues when he was married. I think Marvin was a very complicated man, like most people are. He wasn’t as bad as the worst things he did, and wasn’t as good as the best thing he did. It’s just a shame he died as he did. Sometimes that’s more remembered than how great an artist he was, which is a shame. I digress, weird. Anyway, I loved this album and I’m more a Stax man than Motown. I do think it’s an album you should hear before you die and preferably before you have kids, because this album can only help conception. I'd imagine this is aural viagra, so you could use it after you had kids as well.

A fantastic album
On an album full of fuck songs, "You Sure Love to Ball" is a fuuuuuuuck song. Glad I got to hear that one for the first time. It's a short album and there's no real need to have the title track on here basically twice. Overall, this is a really entertaining record, but definitely not Marvin at his peak. Still really good, though!

Let's Get it On, an obvious choice but a classic for a reason Overall Thoughts: Musically speaking it was a very pleasant listen, but lyrically it was very sexual in nature (as it’s known to be) and I personally just do not relate to that, but I do see why this album is considered a classic.
I rate this album 7/10, it was a genre I don’t really listen to so it as fun to hear a new style of music and I like the energy of this album 3/5

when i first was pulling this up it didn't immediately click in my brain as The Sex Album until i heard the opening notes. the most immediate "oh yup, easy five" in ages. it's basically a meme at this point just how sexual this album is, but it's pretty much perfect. incredible talent by marvin gaye to execute so precisely on the vision of this album in such a timeless way. even beyond the title track which i was already well acquainted with, every track on here is a standout track on its own. simply an all-timer, no notes.
This sounds so fucking incredible that I have no point of comparison. It's just an album of pure, immaculate vibes. The production on here is second to none, the singing is incredible and by god the instrumentation here. For once I have pretty little to say about an album because, to me, this is close to perfection. Its obligatory when talking about this album to mention how much it fucks, and it fucks so hard it has become the pure ideal of fucking in music. This is one of the first albums on the list that my only wish was it to be longer.
