Reviews (page 3 of 13)
Prachtig album. 4.5
it was a great album with a lot of memorable songs
Great artist, great music. One of the best R&B artists of all-time.
Classic
Fucking classic baby making music. Short but oh so sweet
Great
It's a 5, an absolute must listen for anyone. It's funky, soulful, expressive, and intelligent, all without being an easy listen. The only minor complaint I would have is the sex noises strewn about, but considering the themes, aesthetic, and overall tone of the album, they don't detract or distract much.
GOAT
Stórkostleg plata! Lets get it on er samt ALLT OF SEXY til að spila með folki
I've been really tryin' to assess this album. Tryin' to hold back this feeling that it's the second best Marvin Gaye record. And if you feel like I feel, you'll want to give it five stars.
Horny ass
Hard to not be overplayed and cheesy 50 years later but damn it is still sexy and it is still fun.
Great album.
Great music
A bunch of quality slow jams. This album is very well put together musically, and Gaye's voice is both soothing and emotional. The album doesn't overstay its welcome, either, clocking in at a rather lean 31 minutes.
Just great
Ah so this is where the meme comes from
Classic!!
Amazing smooth vocals, such a sexy record
Another all time sex playlist inclusion by Marvin Gaye, the GOAT of making music people make babies to.
You already know ...
Zeitloser Klassiker. Sicher eines der besten 100 Soulalben - und das will was heißen.
I can't believe how good this record sounds. The recording is so live and clear. It's like being in the room. Dude's voice is perfect. Unbelievable tone. I mean - what are these performances? "If I Should Die Tonight" is unreal. He's using everything in the toolbox here. Get outta here, Marvin..... The only downside is it’s only 8 tracks and 2 of those are kinda throwaway. Otherwise this is impeccable. FIVE STARS
thoughts: i really enjoyed this. obviously the title track is a classic, but i loved the slower songs on the album. marvin gaye’s voice is magic on top of the production. “just to keep you satisfied” is a perfect final track songs: “please don’t stay (once you go away)”, “if i should die tonight”, “distant lover” rating: 9.0/10
The start of the title track is to sudden amorous changes of mood what the Wilhelm scream is to guys falling to their deaths
This is the first time I ever heard the full album. I have heard “Let’s Get it On” before. It doesn’t surprise me if the World population increased due to this song! As far as the rest of this album? Smooth, great voice, fantastic production. 5/5
Funny enough Ive been on a Soul binge, so this is a nice way to end it off. Few albums can say they've defined the idea of what sex sounds like. It's a tough job to follow up what may be the greatest album of all time, but this album did it about as well as anyone could. It's so good. 96/100
It's just good.
His finest
This album is masterful. The only song that pulled my from amazement was "You Sure Love to Ball", too repetitive. Even with this, still an absolute classic.
every song is too much and not enough
High quality. Up there with the best of them
I am gaye for this album
Bangin groove. Insane vocals. Dear lord this fucker was talented.
A few years ago I dropped my wife off at the grocery store so she could go shopping. It was a nice day so i decided to just hang out in the car. I found a shady spot, rolled the windows all the way down and turned the radio up. While I was sitting out there, WXRT played "Let's Get It On" and as one can't help but do, I started to groove on it, singing along and such. I forgot, however, that this song is essentially sex on a stick and after a minute or so I got super self conscious, I mean, I was by myself in that car! This album is so fucking smooth that... other smooth things wish they were this smooth. (I'm tired - analogies are tough today)
Absolutely loved this album. Just velvety and soulful. Listening to this album in an open-style office building was an interesting experience.
Fantastic beginning to an album. The first half was so good. Smooth and danceable. Lots of really nice drum work. Song structure is very basic but the embellishments really make them stand out. It's a really short album with really no weak tracks. Only preference would be for the energy at the beginning to be consistent at the end. Would definitely add this to the rotation if I'm in the mood for some rnb. Overall: 9.5/10
4/5
This album is where “Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay” was originated. Favorite Track: Come Get To This
Freaky ahh album
#16 Let's Get It On ~ Marvin Gaye Fuck me, what an album. Marvin Gaye sounds crazy good here. And who can really blame him, cause he's really getting down and sexy with these 8 songs. But in them is also a touch of deep sentimentality and personal vulnerability in his voice, as if the thought of romance elicits painful memories (Please Don’t Stay (Once You Go Away), If I Should Die Tonight). And yes, love can be ugly and painful but these sort of unpredictable affairs should be taken with a reasonable degree of optimism, which Marvin breathes into the album. This is the key that makes this album sound truly ALIVE. Outside Marvin's layered vocals, the instrumentals are incredibly lush and easy going to listen to. Nevertheless the introduction of saxophone in the background lines help duet with Marvin's vocals and adds an soaring feeling to the music (Come Get To This). This is a short album, which aims to do one thing well: to make you feel alive. And it pretty much does it perfectly with each song. If one could nitpick something about this album, it probably be the fact it inspired a very lacklustre Charlie Puth song, and that's probably it. Verdict: The Joy and Pains of Life
Sex time!
Made me horny
Very soulful, loving and sincere LP from Marvin Gaye. Era defining album and one that I personally enjoy a lot. I don't have a ton to say about it other than it's great.
Mmmfgh. Not my favorite album of his and it’s a little repetitive thematically but damn it’s so good. 9/10
Love fav one so far
“There’s nothing wrong with me loving you.” Lush, romantic, and just lovely. The all-timer title track (which is so good it has a reprise) is well supported.
Marvin Gaye must have made this to be every person's wingman because this album is just too irresistible!
How can you not like Marvin Gaye? Fav Track: Distant Lover
This album fucks. What a juggernaut of R&B/Motown/soul. Truly changed the game.
Damn, this was sexier than I expected. I know it has that reputation and it absolutely justifies it!
Perfect album
Classic grooves. Actually iconic music and lives up to every bit of hype it receives.
Smooth and soulful, Marvin was one of a kind and always enjoyable to listen to. It is a shame he died such a tragic death, and the world has been deprived of his talent. RIP, Marvin.
this is so good. 5/5
Extremely pleasant music. Gaye has a wonderful voice, and I love the use of the saxophone on so many of these tracks. Great record.
yes
💯
My daughter just bought this for me for my birthday on vinyl. What a great great album. Most of what he sings about is still relevant today. Unfortunately. He was one of the ones that went way too early. I think he had a lot left in him.
The title track had me a bit suspicious but this ended up being a fantastic listen. Marvin Gaye was 1000% in his bag when he cooked up this banger. Not to mention that this was a short and sweet album with a runtime of 31 minutes. I was pleasantly surprised how charming this album would end up being. Top 5: Come Get To This(Fav), You Sure Love To Ball(close second), Distant Lover, Let’s Get It On, and Please Don’t Stay (Once You Go Away) No bad songs 4.6/5
This is so good
Kinda weird, but the album didn’t really click until the last song when I realized it was about all the aspects of love, starting with sex, obviously, and then ending with a solemn goodbye, with that in mind it really bumps this album up for me, I already knew I was going to give another album of his a five, can’t wait to listen to that one again, but this is fantastic as well and the added context makes this album so much better in my mind.
Nice
Horny soul songs! Tastefully sexy! Vintage gentleman club!
Favorite song: if i should die tonight Bros the blueprint
Like having honey drizzled into your ears. In a good way. Five.
Listen to this album while producing babies. 10/10
Sooo good!
way too good
Love it! What an incredibly soulful album about love and desire
Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On is the sexiest thing I've ever heard. The album is consistent in it's vision/concept, but also in it's execution; Gaye gives it to you in a breezy 32 minutes. I'm shocked that even the stuff that seems like filler is actually excellent. The production is impeccable, Gaye's voice is soulful and powerful, and the instrumentation is precise. For an album about fucking, it's hilarious that it's as meticulously constructed and presented as it is. A whole, realixed vision on wax... .... Goddamn.
Not a single dull moment. Amazing production, infections grooves, beautiful strings/horns and Marvin Gayes energy make it more of a crowd pleaser than his spiritual explorations on 'What's Going On’. All tracks are great. Highlights are the title track, please stay, If I should die tonight, Distant Lover
Probably the epitome of soul and romance music. With a perfect title track, and simple yet brilliant sax work, Gaye has created one of the smoothest albums of all time. Plus it has a good album cover. Best track: lets get it on Worst track: Keep gettin' it on
Marvin Gaye is probably my favorite Motown artist. What a lovely album about getting it on. Whereas What's Going On dealt with sociopolitical struggles and civil rights, Let's Get It On is a celebration of sex and love during such turbulent times.
One of the greatest R&B voices of all time. Taken way too soon!
Alright. One of the reasons why I'm so behind on this list is because I've been listening to this album more than any other album on the list. I don't know why it has stuck on me so much, but I have really been loving the whole piece. Obviously the first song is a major hit, but I think the rest of the songs are just as, if not, better than Let's Get it On. This album is really jammy and sexual, which usually wouldn't get a high rating from me; however, it has landed with me. Gonna give this a 5 just by how much I've listened to it over others. Is it the most complex? No. Is it the most interesting? No. Is it filling a void for me? Yes.
i mean if you don't love this album you are just trying to be cool or something stupid
Wow that was good. Short and sweet. Even though I'd only known Let's Get It On before, I loved every song after.
Been in love w Marvin Gaye since I was a kid can't give him anything but 5s
Has an album ever been more aptly titled to convey its intent. The less words said about this album the better. It creates a mood and sticks with it - and it's quite a mood. Special shout out to the rhythm section.
So soulful
Outstanding
Legendary banging music.
Classic good feeling album!
Pretty magical
Sexy and smooth. Marvin Gaye RIP
Amazing album. Damn sexy throughout. The Funk Brothers absolutely kill it on this album. 5 stars.
Good times, good vibes, easy 5. Nice instrumentals and vocal work. 'Let's Get It On' is a certified banger... Heh.
Perfection
There ya go
a sexy and soulful album that utilizes soul and doo-wop sounds to highlight Marvin's sexy and sensual delivery that portrays sex as a spiritual experience and resulted in what is called "one of the most sexually charged albums ever recorded."
Never considered sleeping with a man until Marvin seduced me on the 163 bus to work......
Entre What´s going on y I want you publica la tetralogía perfecta con Trouble man y este Let´s get in on por medio (ampliado con el explícito Here my dear). Contiene otros temas fabulosos: If i should die tonight, Keep Gettin’ It On, Come Get To This y You Sure Love To Ball, otros dos sencillos fabulosos.
Come on come on come on baby... audio aphrodisiac right here.
First listen. Great album. Doesn't get smoother than this. Just chill. This one could grow into a fav.
This album is go damn good I don't even mind that Marvin couldn't even make it to Side B before ripping off the title/opening track with "Keep Gettin' It On." An absolute master at the height of his powers. I don't recommend listening to "You Sure Love to Ball" at work, though.
Smooth as my wife’s love tunnel when we listen to Marvin Gaye.
Masterpiecr
A classic
Soul
amei, baita album
he is the best 10 out of 10
I was conceived to this record. 5/5
Banger
I looooove Marvin Gaye.
Magnificent!
Wow! How many babies have been made to this album! So smooth!
An easy one to love. The ingredients are a perfect gumbo: fantastic songwriting expressing every form of yearning and sex, top notch arrangements sung by on of the best voices in all of music. Not one track should be skipped. A classic.
Solid as fuck.
Can’t go wrong with Marvin Gaye
How many children were made to these songs? Countless. Classic.
Tragic hottie Marvin Gaye - this is the third album I've listened to from him this month and the more I get into him the more I want to dive deeper into his legacy and lore. Yes this album invented the sound of sex on wax, but the inspiration was Marvin navigating his own sexuality that had been corrupted and stigmatized by his abusive father. That relationship famously ended as poorly as a father-son relationship can end. It's a shame that "Let's Get It On" basically became a meme song, like it plays during Super Bowl commercials for Hot Pockets, because it's a great fucking song but it's almost embarrassing to listen to out loud at this point. The rest of the album is also excellent. I think I slightly prefer "What's Goin' On" but I wouldn't kick this out of bed.
This album really captures the essence of being horny AF. 5 stars.
Killer
Arguably one of the best R&B/Soul albums. Influenced so much of the genre, timeless.
This is the Gayest Marvin has ever been
Makes me miss the human touch and the passion and pain of romance
Really good album with really consistent flow.
Nothing wrong with this.
Smooth as butter and empathetic as a warm hug. It's all love baby.
I remember when my grandma was moving and we found her old record player with this record still in it. Now that she’s gone it’s beautiful to hear this record and hear the beauty in it that I know she heard listening to it for all those years. RIP Grandma and RIP Marvin Gaye!
Instant 5 obviously
Brilliant album but Christ, Marvin was horny. The final track is absolutely devastating
Frábær plata.
I wanted to get it on before listening to this album but now I want to get it on even more.
Smooth voice and a lot of heart
amazing
Started listening on Fri 31/1/25
Yup
Most instantly recognizable album opener ever? Pretty much setting the standard for Soul and R&B along with What's Going On - one protest soundtrack and on bedroom soundtrack.
The first two seconds of this album? Iconic beyond belief! It’s short, sharp and sexy. What else do you want?
As a teenager at the geight of grunge and nothing was cool with my male friends I put on this album at a party full of girls who did have wider taste of music to show them how sophisticated at love I really was, am and always will be even though I'd never listen to the album before. It was my ears that lost their virginity that night.
Pretty good
yowsa
Let’s get it on 😏😏
oh mr gaye youve done it again!
sick ass album
The first half is more interesting than the second, but it is too good to downgrade. Not sure how I feel about the message of the final song.
Definitely an album worth listening to, multiple times.
MG's 2nd best album
The goddamn blueprint
Smoothy
I've had vinyl, cassette, cd, then back to vinyl versions. It's that good that I must always have a copy. Obviously, very different in content to What's Going On, but easily its equal.
FIIIIIRRRRREEE!!!
Classic soul album from Gaye that has no lack of catchy soulful and sexy songs.
Wunderbar!
taitaa olla että tittelilaulu vienyt tätä albumia huomattavasti eteenpäin. loput puolituntia on perus marveilua, eli saatanallista anteeksiantamatonta wibailua.. jaa hänen isänsä ampui ja tappoi hänet ok miksi vitussa luen näitä aina gg... ei vaikuta millään tavalla kuunteluuni ei kaunista ääntä yhtään tämä traaginen tarina....perkele... 98marvin98.. vähän eri tyyppi siinä... tsekki... legenda omassa haarassaan.. musta marvini eri.. annettu kolmosta ja nelosta... onkohan siinä aika.. kuin askelmia portailla.. onkohan siinä aika vitoseen. päästykkö parvekkeelle asti nyt.. SEXIÄ SEXIÄ SEXIÄ SEXIÄ SEXIÄ SEXIÄ KYLLÄ KYLLÄ KYLLÄ KYLLÄ KYLLÄ if i should die tonight
While this album wasnt as great as be it was still great. The best songs on here are Let's Get It On and Distant Lover. There isnt a worst song on here either because all of it was great. 9.7/10
My only criticism is that this album is a little one-note. But damn is it a good note.
Incredible vocals, way more strings and other instruments in the background filling out the tracks.
Legendary, healing, powerful.
The song Let's Get It On is so good that the rest of the album could be a cacophony of babies crying, lips smacking, teeth scrapping on forks and car alarms, and it would still earn 5 stars. Thankfully, it’s not—there are other excellent tracks here. It’s no What’s Going On, but honestly, what album is?
Let’s Get It On tells you exactly what it’s gonna be about. And then it gets down to the sexy business. The only question is whether this should have been a longer record…
I see quite a few reviews complaining about this album being "one note" but that's rather missing the point - this is utility music! This is an album you put on for a specific purpose, to set a specific mood, and you want it to maintain that mood, for, (checks runtime) 32 minutes. (Only 32 minutes Marvin? 😏 ) Anyway, you set a mood like this, you don't want to be jarred out of it, is what I'm saying. I docked "What's Going On" a star for exactly that reason - the preachy schmalzy tracks really brought things down. Here, Marvin Gaye is staying on topic, and the topic is getting it on. Fave track - as well as "Let's Get It On", let's say the comically dated titled "You Sure Love to Ball"...
Also known as: Sex, the album. Fuck it, 5 sterren FAVO: Let's get it on, Keep gettin' it on, Come get to this, Distant Lover, You sure love to ball, Just to keep you satisfied
Marvin es lo más grande que hay. Este disco es una joya.
There isn't a ton to say about this album. It's a classic and pretty much flawless. Incredible songs, incredible production, incredible staying power 50+ years later. An easy 5 stars.
Real music, sexy and passionate
absolutely extraordinary, I think I ascended. Not a single flop. It was soulful and graceful, and sounded like warm chocolate cookies and sweet childhood.
fire album, i used to think it was better than what’s going on but i don’t think that anymore, but this is still amazing
There is nothing I could possibly say about the single best soul album of all time that would expand the conversation.
All bops no filler
Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On grabs you from the first note, with his voice immediately setting the tone for an album full of soul and sincerity. The opener is an undeniable classic, but it’s the authenticity of the whole album that really stands out. It feels like these songs are pouring straight from Gaye’s heart, as if he’s rushed into the studio the moment inspiration struck. His vocal performance is almost like a magic trick—constantly surprising you with its range and emotion, leaving you wondering how he pulls it off time and time again. If I Should Die Tonight is the standout, showcasing Gaye at his most vulnerable and powerful. And, as a side note, the fact that the Marvin Gaye biopic starring Jesse L. Martin didn’t happen is still a real shame. This album earns a perfect 5/5.
Sexy, beautiful, and wonderful from start to finish
Vraie dinguerie. Vraiment banger
I was conceived to this record. 5/5
When this pick popped up, I let out an audible “HELL YEAH”. Immediately put the album on and took the dog out for a walk on this chilly morning. Marvin Gaye is one of those Top 3 crooners, and one I also always realize I don’t listen to enough. This album is perfect from start to finish, and its inclusion is warranted.
Excelente!!!
V good. Understandably classic
good vibes, très communicatif if you should die tonight - solo sax qui chiale ptn banger distant love trompette,
This might just be the ultimate chill and make out record of all time. Simply put, Let’s Get It On is “a record unparalleled in its sheer sensuality and carnal energy.” https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-lets-get-it-on-by-marvin?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
First song is a certified banger, so how does the rest of the album compare? Well, Let's Get It On is the high point so while it's technically true to say it's all downhill from there, it's not really helpful (though Keep Gettin' It On Is, y'know, about the same high). Any song can go anywhere and the album loses nothing. Easy to put on, easy to listen to. It's not experimental, it does not make a collage of existing music, it does not push the envelope. It's just good, consistent music.
I literally feel the sweat from the sex on this. God HOT HOT HOT. It works so well in its concept that you forget that you are listening to a man moaning, and Jesus, the women, this is just I feel like tons of drugs and sex were had, and sheesh. Keep getting it on and Come get to this sheesh amazing. I will be making love to this soon that is a promise.
Romance run amok Drenched in sensuality Pleasure seeker’s must
eeesse é clássico, hein? PQP . 5 estrelas.
Pure fucking music
Second only to "What's Going On" as Marvin Gaye's 70s masterpiece. Essential.
best album thus far! But also a really good album in general
lives up to the title
Great
Perfect album. He’s an Incredible singer and every track is amazing. Love the sound of this record and the grooves are so deep.
Such a great record, immaculate vibes, great playing, great singing. If I die tonight is amazing.
I never realized how much Bruno Mars is trying to be Marvin Gaye until listening to this album. The songs are cool.
Enjoyed this one. His voice sounds like another piece in the brass
smooth
S E X !!! This is probably my favorite Marvin Gaye's album. I think that never in the history of music has anyone managed to communicate and convey the sensations of... you know what, like Marvin did on this record. About the title track, a renowned Brazilian journalist once said: "...it presents such an engaging atmosphere that I have no doubt that 1/3 of children born since that year on the planet have been conceived to the sound of the song."
que discazo de la san puta
YEAHHHHH I’ve been so bad about listening to these on time but THIS??
Wonderful
Oh, yeah...
An absolute banger of an album. Thanks Marvin
Truly one of the kings of soul music. His voice truly encompasses the passion and soulfulness of the genre. From the opening bars of this album you know it's going to be special. And not one filler, the album follows seamlessly. 5/5
I get it now
BanGers
Marvin’s vocals elicit stankface more than any other. I mean, instrumentally this is on point, but I’m just stankfacing left and right during these tracks.
Let's Marvin Gaye and get it on....
Day199 - this freakin guy just oozes cool. this a late night album for everyone
10/10. Marvin Gaye was incredible.
Classic
Amazing. Lesser knows its are so great
5 out of 5. The whole album sounds and feels cohesive and Gaye's voice is wonderful. Easy to see why it was included on this, and I'm sure many other's, top lists. Not a bad song on this album. Definitely an album to add to my collection in some way. Favorite song: Keep Gettin' It On
Another great album by the master of soul music. From the opener to the later tracks its a good journey of up and down. I appreciate that the music is a bit more versatile than other albums while the lyrics are good soulful Marvin Gaye.
Top sex songs 10/10
Just about one of the smoothest and sexiest albums ever recorded. If you don't feel the vibe you ain't got a pulse
I'm a big fan of Marvin Gaye's classic run of albums, this is just so smooth.
Classic
Short and strong.
Quite possibly the finest collection of odes to desire, love, lust, and of course 🎷 (knockin boots). An unparalleled celebration of the joys of sensuality. Nobody smoother than Marvin.
Loved it. Easy to listen to. Fun and sexy.
I think I got pregnant just listening to this
Great
God damn… Marvin. One of my favourite singers ever and this steaming album is excellent all the way through.
Oh man, Marvin Gaye is so good. I love the sound of his voice, and music. 5 stars.
S teir. Just an awesome album all around. Nothing to say that hasn’t already been said but the way he uses music to cope with his childhood trauma and is STILL able to make it awesome and connect with an audience is an amazing thing. The artistry is unparalleled and he was truly a master of his music. They just don’t make them like they used to.
Soul Classics
They don’t make much music like this anymore.
One of the best albums by one of the best artists. Baby making music!
Great porn groove
marvin may not be at his best here but he is pretty damn close to it. the vast majority of the album is great as hell and the only "bad" parts are okay if you can deal with some prime early-mid-70s explicit moaning. only thing i will say is i'm not sure why 'keep gettin' it on' is so close to the title track, but i guess it bookends the sides, so it's alright. but yeah, front to back this is a classic for a reason. and it's a lot shorter than i remember!
Between "What's Goin on?" and "Let's Get it On" Marvin Gaye can do no wrong! Classic albums!
The official album of getting it on. Over 50 years later, still holds the title.
Musical excellence for surezies. I listened to this at least 4 times today (quite on purpose) and i had a great time. incredibly sensual album 😏. Will be revisiting. Let's Marvin Gaye and get it on boys.
Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On is so smooth. After listening to What’s Going On, I wasn’t sure if he could make something that good again. To clarify, he didn’t, because that album is amongst the best of all time. He still delivers, though, with a short but sweet. The first six songs are all flawless. Let’s Get It On, the title track and also the intro, features that iconic saxophone (I think) with Marvin just spazzin’ his shit out. He keeps on delivering, in many styles too. For instance, Distance lover is wildly different from Let’s get It On, yet they both work with Marvin’s majestic voice. I felt You Sure Love To Ball and Just To Keep You Satisfied were a bit too slow and depressed for me, but still both great songs. So close to a perfect ten. Also an amazing cover for the album as well. All in all, Let’s Get It On is a perfect album. Best Song: Keep Gettin' It On Worst Song: You Sure Love To Ball
I was momentarily tempted to give this a 4.5 because of how much I love What's Going On, but the king of the slow jam deserves all five stars. Maybe the sexiest 30 minutes in all of music. If I Should Die Tonight and Keep Gettin' It On are sleeper hits.
Perfect
How many babies were born as a result of this album?
"Ready To Die' by Biggie Smalls was by far the sexiest album on the list for me. And I gave that a 5/5. I don't know if Marvin beats that, but the amount of babies conceived while this was on makes this album a 5/5.
A perfect album for sex and listening but also sex.
Sexy ass album
Marvin is a beautiful man Album cover: A-
The infamous, seductive song "Let's Get It On" is followed by a groovy and sensual tracklist. Very different to his album from 2 years prior "What's Going On", but still has that fantastic Marvin voice with a musical heaven backing him up. Favourite tracks: Lets get it on, Please don't stay, If I should die tonight, Distant lover
Okay... I guess I'll listen to one of my all time favorites... again. Fair warning ANY Marvin album is gonna get a 5 from me.
Great album of his upbeat music.
sex.
Simply great.
I love this album. The only problem is it’s too short.
I mean, it's just like one of the best R&B/soul albums ever. Also, it's so incredibly saucy, but it feels so genuine that it doesn't come off as vulgar at all. It's just really easy to listen to as well, it's so smooth. And it's absolutely iconic, the first few seconds of the first song have become a meme, but I just think it shows how immediately the vibe of the album is conveyed.
Killer album
There is just nothing like this and I don’t know what I could say that hasn’t already been said.
Brilliant. What an album. Every song was emotional, the lyricism and range is divine. Just excellent.
The epitome (start?) of slow jam. The opening twang of the title track is iconic, the song is a beauty. Side one is pretty awesome, even if Keep Gettin It On is a little too close of a reprise - If I Should Die Tonight is a soulful gem that if you don't know, you need to know it. Side two isn't as good, though Come Get to This and Distant Lover are solid and sultry. You Sure Love to Ball tries too hard but Just To Keep You Satisfied is a nice soaring ballad. The album is a clear 4 and part of me doesn't want to go higher because it's not as good as What's Going On. But given that thousands if not millions of babies were conceived thanks to these jams, I'll give it a bump. The album just oozes sexiness. There may not be another album quite like it.
Let's get it on is a song that is impossible to listen to and not tap your foot, sway a little, and eventually start singing. It's also the only song I've heard on this album. After listening to it, I threw it on again and I think it transcends time. It was solid in 1973 and it could have been released by Bruno Mars last year (featuring Gucci Mane of course).
No misses. All great songs and great performances. Kind of comical listening to this on a plane by myself but was totally into it regardless.
Classic
Quase uma Viagra viva
Smooth as can be. I really appreciated how much work the horn section did. Really lived up to the moment. Great work all around
bliss
Beautiful. Iconic album. Not many could recreate his sound and the passion in his lyrics.certainly fewer try today. Gary Clark Jr. is giving it a worthy try though. Another good one I have missed. Murdered by an unworthy madman. If I believed in hell, he’d surely be cookin.
I try, if I can, to write comprehensive reviews of albums, reviews that deal with theme as well as content, that examine how I see an album in it’s historical, social, political and, of course, musical context. It’s a fun exercise, but the amount of material I’m able to get from an album depends heavily on my relationship to the genre, to the artist, and to the theme. I’m usually able to muster a good 1000 words for an album or genre I know and love, or a project I’m new to, but which deals with a theme or style I can talk at length about. I could easily do a 1000 words or more about What’s Going On. But how can you criticise an album that somebody has already perfectly described as ‘Sex -The Album?’ I don’t like it as much as What’s Going On, obviously, but it’s still a great soul album. Keep on getting it on
Amazing.
ok but nah
Essential
Spectacular
What is it with Marvin? First he starts trying to find out what’s going on? Then he’s insisting we get it on. Half way through this he insists we keep getting it on. Before long he wants you. And you’re in the midst of midnight love. Surely this is the tell tale signature sign of a sex pest? 4.9
Five stars alone for "Keep on getting it on" lolol
Fun
This album is so fucking smooth. Absolute classics all around. 4.5
The smoothest of smooth and doesn't overstay its welcome.
Der Klassiker
so good
This has got to be the sexiest album ever recorded. Volumes have been written about Gaye's artistic direction on this record and the pivotal impact it had on funk, soul, quiet storm, R&B, and rock, so I'll refrain from adding to the noise. I do want to point out that Gaye barely sings a cohesive verse or chorus on this entire album. None of the songs follow a typical poetic pattern or rhyming structure; indeed, most songs are just Marvin absolutely crooning and crushing ad-libs over the most sensual Motown backing band ever assembled. It would not work for anyone except him, and frankly, I'm surprised there is only one background moaning track. Stand out tracks include "Let's Get It On", "If I Should Die Tonight", "Distant Lover", "You Sure Love To Ball", and "Just To Keep You Satisfied".
Sexy!
Absolute fucking gold!! This album is the quintessence of all that is sexy and romantic. Beginning with the slightly cheesy and overplayed yet perfect timeless titular track, it weaves through 8 songs of pure soulful splendor. Marvin Gaye's voice reaches heights accompanied by melodies and progressions that define classic soul and mo-town and yet also transcends them as well. A true leader in the scene. Honestly every one of these songs is dripping in sensuality and would accompany any romantic setting with ease. Even 50 years later, these songs hit just as hard as they did when they were released and his memory will live on eternal through his art. Rest in power Marvin!
Classic sexy, wonderful honey coated music and lyrics. Marvin Gaye was Epic and Ine of the Very Best smooth jazz/blues/Motown Sound!!
Marvin Gaye had a beautiful voice and certainly knew the way to a woman’s heart and/or pants. Well-deserved reputation.
Groovy
Those grooves! Seriously how am I supposed to get any work done when the grooves are this powerful?
Much like Aretha Franklin, it’s so clear from listening to even just one song that Marvin Gaye was in a league of his own. And also much like Aretha, I think he has a permanent spot in the list of the best male vocalists of all time. If he isn’t on that list somewhere, the list is invalid by default. And what a stage setter Let’s Get It On is as an opening track. By far one of the most legendary opening songs to any album from the early 70’s. If you aren’t immediately in love with Marvin from hearing his voice, are you even human? It’s instantly accessible, and anybody can find enjoyment in listening to that man sing with the delicacy and power of one thousand other men. This album contains some of the most beautiful, intimate and emotionally driving soul music ever written. Every song is genius, and the band is excellent all throughout, especially when they bring in orchestral elements like the strings. It adds another level of sophistication that I love to hear in this kind of music. But really all of the highs on this come from Marvin’s singing. It is awe inspiring the things he was capable of writing and singing about at such a young age. Granted, he was 34, but there are people now at age 34 who wish they could be as talented as him. In his time, he created some of the most cherished and personal love songs ever, and they fill my heart with joy. It’s the kind of experience you will not find anywhere else in music. Rating: 9/10
If pink fur or plush was music, this would be it. Sounds like straight from porn. Nice songwriting, excellent drums, beautiful melodies... but it made me kind of horny.
Perfect album tbh. It’s crazy to put that many classics on one album
Absoulte banger of an album, nothing comes close. Love it.
A classic of ALL genres.
A classic I fucking love Marvin Gaye, so I was so excited to rate this one This man is so down bad but I am so here for it. Amazing soulful album not one song misses 10/10
A classic for a reason!
this album aint just sexy as fuck, it IS fuck. for real though, every song has this same vibe while being very different from each other on structure, melody and arrangements. shows how marvins music could be as sexy as revolutionary, on the whats going on album
Excellent album, I will have to get it on vinyl. Easy to listen to, can definitely see myself chilling out and putting this one on.
Marvin will make you feel something. Pause. No I meant it. This album is up there right behind Whats Going On for me. Much different vibe (all love songs) but still the same passion. Will never get old
Sexy Album!!!
Such smooth and groovy music. Really enjoyable listen. Marvin has an amazing voice.
A smooth and well crafted album to play over and over again, loved it
This album fucks. Now you may think I mean it's smooth, sexy and full of funk and all that's true. This album evokes that feeling when your on a date and you realise that both of you have decided to sleep with each other and then spend the next 30 minutes sending increasingly provocative signals to each other. 10/10 will be seduced again.
Absolute masterpiece, not a bad song on here and reminded me of how amazing of an artist he was, will be on the rotation in my life for years to come
Non-Christians may have an issue with the God-centric core of the album, but this is a dense soul/jazz mix with one of the greatest singers ever.
Ah, Marvin Gaye. *swoon*
Mauh <3
Such a seminal album. I could listen to this all of the time.
Just fire
Yeah. This is amazing
Tolles Album. Jeder Song erotischer als der Letzte. 5*
For my money this is one of the best "soul" albums of all time. Certainly in the top 10.
I've heard the song, "Let's Get It On," but without the context of the whole album, the classic R&B just doesn't appeal to me. However, listening to the entire album, it really is amazing, flows so well, is performed perfectly, and obviously has had such a huge impact. For me, I'd probably put it at 4 stars, but I have to give it 5 stars for the impact and influence.
