Absolute classic from Marvin Gaye as far as the title track goes, and the rest of the album is short and sweet. Can't deny his vocal ability and talent even on his lesser known songs. Would come back to this one again.

I enjoyed listening to this. It's all very smoochy and I didn't think it would really lend itself very well to a cold, grey, damp, Monday morning in January but it's a very calming, rich-sounding record and it quietly swept me away for half an hour while I pretended to understand a spreadsheet. So, thanks Marvin. And what a voice. Going to have to dig out more by him now.

I’ve only ever listened to What’s Going On from Marvin Gaye before and I really liked that album but this album felt like on another level to me, very sexy and very good.

A landmark record in R&B, this highly influential collection of tunes does not cover a wide range of sounds but instead goes deep on the burgeoning funk influence on soul music. Tender, sexual and yearning - the influence can be heard reverberating throughout the genre and pop music in general. After Gaye asked the question "What's Going On?', taking in the state of the world around him, he moved to themes here that are more internal, love and desire. Pretty Crazy to do essentially a reprise of the first song on the album 3 songs later, but I am sure they knew they had something timeless on their hands.

Great album really good instrumentation and filled with funk but holy horny. The reviews earlier described this as sexy and sensual and if sex was an album and I believe it now. I don't inherently have anything wrong and it definitely doesn't take away from the incredible song writing but I do think it gets slightly carried like in the moaning in "you sure love to ball" but it was written from Gaye's stunted sexuality as a result of his father's abuse so I can't judge it too harshly but overall definitely definitely recommend. Standout tracks for me were obviously "let's get it on", "come get to this" and "you sure love to ball"

Admittedly, the first time I heard the song 'Let's Get It On' was in Austin Powers. So I've always found the concept of Marvin Gaye to be kinda cheesy. The butt of a joke. But I'm actually really grateful that I spent time with this album and gave it a chance. It's a beautiful and soulful album and I can hear where a lot of modern R&B artists take inspiration from his work. I can see myself listening to it on a slow Sunday morning, maybe cooking breakfast. It's not my usual genre, but that's what I'm here for! 4/5

Marvin Gaye heeft een van de mooiste stemmen in de muziekgeschiedenis. Muzikaal gezien minder interessant dan what’s going on (die nog komt), maar prachtige instrumentaties. De vioolpartijen zijn zo mooi! Ik heb een paar Marvin gaye multitracks, ook van z’n vroege motown carrière waarbij de muziek nog echt heel erg typisch motown klinkt (hele harde snare op elke tel) en ook daar zijn de vioolpartijen zo ontzettend mooi. Het leuke van de productie uit deze tijd is dat alle instrumenten samen worden opgenomen, waardoor er automatisch een geheel ontstaat (ook heel leuk om op de conga track, de drums te horen bijvoorbeeld). Nu wordt elk instrument afzonderlijk opgenomen waardoor de samenhang gecreëerd moet worden. Ik geloof echt dat wanneer samen wordt opgenomen er een automatische verbinding, ziel en ruimtelijkheid ontstaat. Dit hoor je ook zo goed terug in dit album.

The pipes on this man! The groove of the backing band! The arrangements! This album more or less defined the slow, sexy soul ballads that are a centerpiece of R&B to this day. The songs do eventually sound a little bit alike, but given that this was the album that you'd start playing just before you and your partner got busy, it didn't need a lot of variety. All of the vocals (except the backups on "Just to Keep You Satisfied" and presumably the...excited young lady at the start of "You Sure Love to Ball") are Gaye, multitracked to provide an amazing one-man chorus. A titan of its era, even if the title track is the only one you know.

I like the sexuality of it all

Aware of the title track. Heard it for years. Hard to take it seriously because of the way it’s used in TV and movies. And I had no idea there was a reprise track called “keep getting it on”. I need to look this album up. I think “come get to this” is my favorite song on this album. This is a really good album once you get past the cheese that Hollywood layered on.

Ubiquitous horny, romantic and sad staples all together on one album, therapeutic for Gaye and great stuff, but What’s Going On mogs Let’s Get It On entirely. That he was bold enough to name one song Let’s Get It On and another Keep Gettin’ It On, and both are fantastic, is amazing work and You Know How to Ball is absolutely smutty.

First note of the first song... oh yeah... I know I'm in familiar, groovy, pleasant territory. Who doesn't know "Let's Get It On" ??? A solid album that moves you. Too good to have on in the background as the instruments begin to pull you into the movement of their song. Eight songs that blend together and avoid the trap of becoming too repetitive. Top Songs: 1. Please Don't Stay (Once You Go Away) 2. If I Should Die Tonight 3. Distant Lover

It's been a minute since I listened to What's Going On, but this one feels about the same quality. I might slightly prefer Let's Get It On simply because Save the Children was a bit on the nose for my tastes. But don't got much else to say compared to What's Going On. Let's Get It On is also a timeless, lush record that's a delight to listen to. Only downside is there are no inductees for the "Marvin Gaye's Clueless Ass" playlist from this album. Sad, 2/10, would not listen again.

Rating: 8/10 It’s short and very sweet, just a consistent quality experience all the way through. Let’s Get It On is an all timer and I think the best song here but there’s a bunch of solid cuts through the next seven tracks. How many people made albums fully about fuckin before Marvin Gaye?

8/10 This is a hard album to rate for me. I love Marvin Gaye, and there is some really special work on here, with his vocal in particular just shining the whole way through, but this is more of an overall vibe record, rather than being a collection of clearly defined and constructed songs. Some of these tracks are, despite the obvious quality of the performances and production, just a little bit too drifting and jam like to really hold my focus. I guess maybe it's an album designed to be on while you’re busy getting busy, and it certainly fulfils that brief. It’s smooth and sexy, earthy and beautiful. But it’s also music in soft focus, which doesn’t quite connect with me on the same level as his previous record, which is one of my favourites of all time. Every musician plays their part here and the pulse of the album shifts and moves through its duration with a practiced ease. In some respects, this is an excellent album because of that very thing. It’s a singular work. Yes, it’s divided into songs, but you hear little call backs and motifs thrown in here and there from other parts of the record, to the extent that Keep Gettin’ It On refers back to the title track and wanders off in a slightly different direction, and that ‘complete work’ aspect is incredibly appealing as an album prioritising listener. But the slight lack of compositional centre does detract just a little for me. All of that goes to say that, while I do really like this album, to me it almost feels like a record to put on and allow it to just wash over you rather than focusing too closely on it, and that doesn’t elevate it from an album that I really like to one that I love. Let's Get It On - This is one of the smoothest songs ever recorded, isn’t it? So much groove and feel to this one and Marvin giving it so much movement across his vocal range, while always sounding like it’s effortless for him. The instrumentation takes a back seat to the vocal, but it's got so much quality, it’s so tight, and it’s chock full of vibe. Please Don't Stay (Once You Go Away) - It’s more understated, but it’s still smooth and high quality. It’s got a little less range than the title track, but that vibe is so good. The blend of drums and percussion give this a satisfyingly pulsing life. If I Should Die Tonight - Keeping, and perhaps even furthering the laid back vibe of the last track, Marvin emotes so well over the top of a really nice weave of tonality from the rest of the instrumentation. The vibe is just excellent, although it's perhaps a tiny bit limited in range. Keep Gettin' It On - And we get a return of sorts to the opener. There’s some really lovely piano work in there, and the groove is impossible not to move to. It’s a bit of a jam rather than a more traditional song structure, but it’s a quality jam. Come Get To This - This one swings. It’s more vibe, but things are becoming a little bit too drifty for me at this point. It’s got a bit more get up and go than some of the slower jams, so it’s got that toe-tapping quality to it, but it’s perhaps a little unfocused. Distant Lover - And talking of the slower jams, here comes one now. This one is perhaps a little more focused around the distant lover section, but it does still drift along and slide its way through some changes in composition so that they’re almost not noticeable. The playing, production and vocals are worth the price of admission. It’s so smooth and pleasant, but compositionally, I find it a little to loose. You Sure Love To Ball - We get a bit more focus here as the structure seems a bit more well organised by comparison to other tracks on the album. There’s a clearer movement between sections without losing any of the vibe. He does such a good job with the overlapping vocal lines and the vibe continues to be so, so good. Just To Keep You Satisfied - Another very pretty song that drifts along, but has such a loose focus that it struggles to really grab my attention. This one, perhaps more than others, feels like it doesn’t have a central thread that it clings on to, it just floats along. That’s not to say that it’s bad, because it’s a really pleasant listening experience, but it’s also not top tier because of the lack of focus.

This is the first time I've heard the titular unironically outside of memes and honestly that might just go to show the reach the song has and how well it presents its message. This is an outrageously short and tight album, and minus the sudden jump-scare of moaning in the middle this album is incredibly easy to digest and otherwise enjoy. The only issue is I have very little to say. Compared to the other albums that seem otherwise standard this album is a lot tighter and otherwise more enjoyable although that being said those artists aren't Marvin Gaye which certainly sets him aside from most musicians. This album is pretty standard in sound and sexy is concept raised ahead of other albums in the genre of similar quality by Marvin's excellent voice. Best songs: Let's Get It On Worst songs: N/A Rank compared to everything else so far: 21/30 (below Morrison Hotel above Daydream Nation)

An album full of love, passion, and romance! I enjoyed it and found that it was easy to listen to. Nothing hit me as a “wow” or instant favorite but I had a good time. Probably not one I would re-listen to often though I did save “If I Should Die Tonight”.

What's Going On was rated as one of the best albums of all time along with Astral Weeks in the early 90s music rags, and that was my introduction to Marvin Gaye and his style of musical suites (with sounds and themes somewhat permiating throughout). This he took much further on Let's Get it on which I sought out thereafter, but the theme here is even more persistent and it can be hard to differentiate the groove and melody of one songs from another. I was too young to be as adept and successful a loverman as Marvin or to have the opportunity, but let's face it a seductive soundtrack is exactly what this suits most, and it is probably the ideal example for this. If you can get over the single theme suite nature, it's is almost perfect. So long as your horny baby.

Marvin Gaye is such an iconic artist, certainly top 10 all time for me. His silky smooth vocals combined with his talent for songwriting and influence on the (black) music world makes his early passing such a shame. This album was the start of his more funky works later on and what's a greater way to deal with your stumped sexuality by your father's upbringing than making an album like this. What a legend. I've listened to this album multiple times before and while it obviously isn't as good as 'What's Going On', any song on this album is great for any occasion whether you're relaxed, stressed or feeling frisky of course.

Got me some Marvin! I already had this album on CD, and it's just one love groove all the way through - the title track being the masterpiece and one of the sexiest songs ever recorded. The whole album really is a continuation of that, it's essentially background music to have sex to. Maybe that's why it's only 30 minutes long. It's sweet singing, pianos and saxophone and occasional female panting. Marvin Gaye was REALLY fucking into having sex at this point in his life. Only one great song here and whilst it's probably usually ranked as his #2 album, there may be other better ones with more high points than this. Look, it's really nice throughout, a little short of the full marks, but is definitely up there as a great example of the genre. I just can't rate it the same as the very different 'What's Going On'.

The song is iconic but this album is great. It all has feeling and emotion and sets the mood. I love "Keep Getting It On" as an accompaniment to its famous companion song along with "If I Should Die Tonight".

A soul masterpiece with touch of funk and some jazz elements. This is a timeless classic!

Marvin Gaye is a legend of several kinds of music but I'll say, primarily, R&B and soul. I'm an utter novice at both, so let's just say I'm working on better understanding and feeling the grooves he worked with. The title track is a cross-genre classic though. The rest of the record is smooth, infectious and joyful. I think what fails to land for me with R&B is that smoothness often becomes slowness, which bores be. Sexiness becomes a sleepiness (or sometimes a vague threatening-ness). This is none of that: it is interesting, vital -- Gaye pleads with the listener. Anyway, 4/5 and it's not even my jam.

Whats going on — one of my favorites

Sets a standard for Rhythm and Blues that few other artists can even approach. Influential in that it opened the door to straight talk about sex in pop music. That might have had some unfortunate outcomes (pop lyrics that are basically porn), but the influence is undeniable. I was about to give this a 5, but then changed my mind because some of lesser known tracks sound the same as the better known tracks. It’s a good sound, but there’s not a lot of diversity on this album. A 4.

The Let’s Get It On theme permeates the entire album which is, definitely, part of its allure. Gotta love Marvin’s beautiful voice, his soul, songwriting and great mastery of the studio. I especially enjoyed listening to the great bass work of James Jamerson on this recording.

Sure yeah, it's the sex album; I mean, what can you say, it's even got Let's Get It On *twice*. But what fewer people know, is that it's actually also the "lying in bed under a warm blanket with your partner, dozing off while dreaming of all the things you've yet to together" album.

Even this supposed festival-of-horniness album is a window on the troubled life of Marvin. That world famous invitation to get carnal sounds, on closer inspection, like a beautifully framed self-justification that love and sex are wonderful despite what he’d been brought up to believe. Such a shame that so much of the greatest art is born of pain. Anyway I'll stick to the wonderful art itself. The focus is indeed love and sex and how they work well together, but also apart. And the album sounds just like that. I can hardly think of a mis-step in the arrangements or production, nor of course the musicianship (James Jamerson is obviously worth a mention but that is a disservice to every other player here) The music is rarely as upbeat as the title track, but it’s a massage for the brain and soul throughout. Then on top of all that add one of the most beautiful voices the world has known. Sounds like 5 stars…and maybe it should be, but I have a few minor gripes: Firstly, it’s only 8 tracks and just over half an hour and that even includes a 3+min reprise of the title track. Secondly, and I know it’s unfair to make this comparison, but it doesn’t quite reach the high bar he had set with its predecessor What’s Going On. Finally, I'm REALLY tight with maximum scores, so scandalously this is reduced to a 4⭐️

When I think about Smooth Soul, I think of Marvin.

This album is pretty good. It's a very easy listening, but yet really interesting too. I've liked it a lot, even though the last songs started to feel a little less interesting for me.

A really great soul record from front to back. It's effortlessly cool and sexy, and Marvin Gaye's vocals just sound amazing.

Kinda glad it starts with the big obvious hit, then you get to enjoy all he has to have without the weight of something else lurking. Consistent throughout are these groovy and intimate movements in his music and it's all so interesting. Let's Get it On is an obvious hit, but his other songs hold their own and give this album life. If you need it for mood setting this would definitely deliver if that's what you're going for

The opening sounds of this album are so tied to the act which the song and album title describes that when I played it not through my bluetooth headphones I was embarrassed and had to look around to see if anyone heard.

Soul in its purest form

I will be fully honest. I’ve never quite understood the amount of love this record receives. I love Gaye’s prior release: the seminal concept album “What’s Going On”. That record is quite literally one of the greatest records of all time and also as an added bonus directly inspired Stevie Won’s artistic expansion during the 70s so that album gets flowers for that. Now to be clear this is not a bad record, it’s very good in that it’s generally good and there’s next to nothing “wrong” with this album but honestly I just don’t fully get it. The opening title track is the embodiment of “romantic soul song” and is an excellent track. “Please Don’t Stay” is also quite good. However the following two tracks on side two are not favorites of mine as they both fall into that slow sound and formula that this album employs for virtually its whole run. The second side opens with my favorite track on the record “Come Get To This” a wonderful song that continues the themes of sexual healing found throughout this record. However I won’t lie the remaining three tracks aren’t favorites of mine. Again, I will make clear this is a good album and a pretty damn good one too but the album feels a little tiring falling into the same formula of slow soul songs that feel repetitive lyrically, outside of a few standouts this album wasn’t my favorite Gaye album

I know there's a double meaning in Keep Gettin' It On, but evoking Jesus's name when saying people need to start getting it on was an awkward choice for the more likely interpretation of the song. This album was way more enjoyable than the other one, really nice jazzy soul. I may not listen to this again, but I liked it

Sadly, I had a great review of this that I didn't save. I continue to think that it's too bad Marvin Gaye is pgeonholed into being "The Sex song guy", but this album is genuinely really inescapably sexy ("What's Going On" is the album that should lead to him having a more nuanced image) Fun story, I walked into my office and immediately started playing this album before making sure my headphones were connected. My officemate fortunately had headphones on (and might not have the cultural context to be offended) but it was almost super embarrassing. Anyway, this is a great album. Good work Marvin. Maybe just a touch more variety next time, but at 31 minutes you can get away with a lot.

This album is smooth as hell and I was deeply concerned with listening to it in the office lest anyone judge me for listening to it. I get why it is understood to be sexy (and it's certainly better than the other sex song we've had (here's looking at you Fred)). With that said, I think my 4-star rating is mostly an acknowledgement of its cultural significance. That's enough for me to round this 3.5 stars up to 4.

Great record, but mood wise not where I’m at this week.

An R&B and Soul standard. Over 50 years later and that hasn't changed at all. Just as vital now as it was when it came out in 1973. Favorites: "Let's Get It On", "Keep Gettin' It On", "Come Get To This", and "Just To Keep You Satisfied"

I had something pre-written but I didn't save it right so I'll be briefer. Historically important album, Marvin Gaye is a legend although I prefer What's Going On and his more socially conscious stuff. I just prefer soul music sung by women over men as a personal preference.

I'm loving Marvin Gaye. However, I still think that his other album was better than this one.

I heard D'Angelo a little while ago, if that was baby making music, this will rock your world. We start off with the very well known title track, and we can expect that energy all throughout. Well composed, well performed, I would snag the record. I could've given it another listen to start enjoying those subtle background details. 4/5

A fun little listen. Because “Let’s Get It On” is so well known, it’s a little comical to hear it as track 1. However, it really set the tone for an album that explores love and intimacy on both physical and emotional levels. The influence is obvious- I was constantly reminded of Prince and Thundercat during this listen

It's a great album. But musically too close to "What's going on". Except the 2 last songs - which I enjoyed the most (except the women's moaning - I never understand why someone would add this)

A controversial album due to the almost illegal levels of sexiness. Initial measurements with a standard Sex-O-Meter™ immediately pegged the needle, unbelievably more than a full Barry White. Continued measuring caused the meter to explode. Caution is advised while listening. Damn. Excellent album by an amazing artist.

If sex were music, it would be Marvin Gaye. This is probably him at his sexiest. Also the title track is like a jumpscare if you forget that it's on this album. Solid album, definitely worth a listen.

I prefer protest Marvin Gaye to sexy Marvin Gaye, But this was a relaxing listen. After having sung all of those songs, I really hope that he did get it on and it was worth it.

To state the obvious Marvin Gaye has a beautiful voice. Hard not to like and a great Sunday album. Only slight reservations about being a bit one pace with 2 tracks ostensibly the same on 30 mins. What a nice sound though. Low 4/5 (7/10)

Play anyone this album and the descriptive word that's likely to come to their head first is "smooth." Damn this is a smooth record. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone with a pulse who finds it objectionable. Marvin Gaye sounds deeply in love and out of that made one of the all time most romantic LPs of all time. Its a shock when it ends after only 30 minutes but I admire Gaye not stretching beyond the hits.

Its a solid to high 4 for me, could have been higher if it covered a bit more ground I find it a bit one note, even though i do enjoy the one very well done note

Not sure why all the hate for this, it’s a landmark album for both funk and soul and explores some complex themes about sex, love and longing, particularly given the context of Marvin’s upbringing and abuse. On the surface, there’s an extremely sensual sound that no doubt influenced more modern R&B, but whereas that took it at face value, running with the sound alone, Marvin’s sincere lyrics give the all important balance and depth that much of that genre lacks. It was also a controversial album given the subject matter and was deemed as a huge risk for Motown to even release it but it gained both critical and commercial success and showed a markedly different side to Marvin following his much more well known and politically themed album _What’s Going On_

Jokes aside, the album, though short, ends up feeling somewhat monotonous; it doesn’t have the versatility of its predecessor, and there aren’t as many memorable moments, at least after a first listen. Even so, it’s a more than solid record for Gaye that puts his immense talent as a singer right in front of our eyes. Smooth as silk

Mercy mercy me I need a cigarette after that. Let's Get It On has the wonderful quality of having a beat that makes for steady, purposeful hip thrusting.

Get it on, the quintessential fuck song, puts the album at a 3 by itself (plus have a sequel that's message is "keep fuckin'", pure genius). But I really should say making love, because although the topic is base, Marvin's sultry, emotional voice caresses the topic and the musical composition is such vulvety perfection.

Always felt he is overrated but I was wrong tried to listen to most albums and its good but nothing that made my life change. This album specifically has a special groove that lasts the whole album with a vibe thats tough to equal. I dont love the falsetos yet feel this is a top album for that genere

Are you kidding! Let's Get it On. First note grabbed my full attention as it should. Soulful Marvin. Loved it.

Marvin Gaye has really grown as an artist for me through this list. His second album on the list for me, and this is a solid one, though perhaps not absolute stellar. Though 'Let's Get It On' might be one of the most well known and overplayed love songs (along a few other songs from Marvin), it's still one hell of a tune. And his singing really makes it shine! The other songs on the album don't stand out as much, but I have to say I really enjoyed most of them. 'If I Should Die Tonight' for example has such a good melancholic chord progression that just works great with the guitars and Marvin's singing. Though lacking of hits, and certainly an album that lyrically feels quite "thirsty", I liked this a lot. Perhaps not an album that I will come back to instantly or remember as a particularly good one, but I enjoyed listening to it a whole lot more than a many other albums on this list. Think I will let that be the decider for the album rating!

The album is good, but it’s hard to ignore the over saturated love R&B ballads on it. While they sound great (it is MARVIN GAYE), some songs can feel way too overly cheesy and cringey. Other than that, this is a good record.

Horniest album so far - and I have listened to 2 Prince albums

I’m pretty sure a couple of people were conceived because of this album. Just a hunch. Weirdly enough, my man problem with this album is that it’s too, uhm, sexy. As someone who really enjoyed What’s Going On, this one felt less smooth and more groovy. Honestly, at times, this really felt like bedroom music, which makes causal listening feel awkward. God forbid you don’t listen to this while doing it and instead driving home from work. The Gowanus Expressway doesn’t need to hear that woman on You Sure Like To Ball moan. Outside that though, it’s still Marvin Gaye. When Marvin hits, he hits and sets the standard for r&b to come. It’s not as close to perfection as What’s Going On for me, but this one still raises to the occasion… Yeah, that’s a bad joke. Favorite track: Let’s Get It On Other hits: Come Get To This, If I Should Die Tonight, Distant Lover, You Sure Love To Ball

The Tongue Twister! I once saw a stat that between the years of 1973-1975, 1 out of every 8 children was conceived to this album. Get freaky, grandma! Of course I just made that statistic up, but I bet you believed it. It doesn’t get much smoother than this, folks. Not something that I’d put on in day-to-day life, but when the mood is right… is there a better choice?
