Reviews (page 6 of 13)
Much better than Gaye's post divorce concept album, but still not enough to get a five. A solid four.
A classic. Now my whole office is in the mood....
Sexy
Strong themes, great songwriting, what else is there to say?
Love me some Marvin Gaye. Not as good as what's going on, but still wonderful. 8/10
Amazing album, full of smooth soul
I know there's a double meaning in Keep Gettin' It On, but evoking Jesus's name when saying people need to start getting it on was an awkward choice for the more likely interpretation of the song. This album was way more enjoyable than the other one, really nice jazzy soul. I may not listen to this again, but I liked it
Sadly, I had a great review of this that I didn't save. I continue to think that it's too bad Marvin Gaye is pgeonholed into being "The Sex song guy", but this album is genuinely really inescapably sexy ("What's Going On" is the album that should lead to him having a more nuanced image) Fun story, I walked into my office and immediately started playing this album before making sure my headphones were connected. My officemate fortunately had headphones on (and might not have the cultural context to be offended) but it was almost super embarrassing. Anyway, this is a great album. Good work Marvin. Maybe just a touch more variety next time, but at 31 minutes you can get away with a lot.
This album is smooth as hell and I was deeply concerned with listening to it in the office lest anyone judge me for listening to it. I get why it is understood to be sexy (and it's certainly better than the other sex song we've had (here's looking at you Fred)). With that said, I think my 4-star rating is mostly an acknowledgement of its cultural significance. That's enough for me to round this 3.5 stars up to 4.
OMG. Love this. The perfect sound for a relaxing Sunday in autumn London. Yes, we‘re all sensitive people with so much to give. — How sweet and wonderful life can be!
yeah, i could get pregnant to this
My guy really went from What’s Going On to this horny shit in 2 years. Slaps
How can you not enjoy this album?
Great record, but mood wise not where I’m at this week.
An R&B and Soul standard. Over 50 years later and that hasn't changed at all. Just as vital now as it was when it came out in 1973. Favorites: "Let's Get It On", "Keep Gettin' It On", "Come Get To This", and "Just To Keep You Satisfied"
So good. 8/10
Great, but not his greatest.
I had something pre-written but I didn't save it right so I'll be briefer. Historically important album, Marvin Gaye is a legend although I prefer What's Going On and his more socially conscious stuff. I just prefer soul music sung by women over men as a personal preference.
A masterclass in being smooth.
marvin gay😼
This causes me immense psychic trauma as a man who is simultaneously afraid of intimacy and obsessed with James Jamerson’s basslines.
Sexy time
Like his political songs more, but still great stuff
Another compelling project I found it quite fun with enjoyable rhythms 8 out of 10 for me

Unc still got it
Marvin, mon gooner préféré.
Let's Get It On.
superhorny
Title song is the song you think of when someone tries to imitate a porn soundtrack with a "bow chikka bow wow" wah wah sound.... Its sensual, dirty, horny, all them things. lay back and get your post listen cigarette ready, you'll need it.
I think I liked this one more than the 80s album Maybe a 4?
Klassiker! Riktigt mysig tända ljus middag vibe! Köp
Classic gettin it on song album.
this man is amazing! love distant lover!!
So so good and so so sexy, as expected
Great work of art , definitely gonna revisit this one
classic
Very smooth!
Masterclass complète.
Just vibes
It's good isn't it? Not quite as good as What's Going On, for my money but, still ....
good but not What’s Going On level
Best Song: Let's Get it On This is a good album. It is pretty short and almost feels like an EP. The title track is its highlight, after that it kind of all sounds like one long song. 4/5.
Pretty good!
Sexy
Some cool soul, at the start of the album I get another one of those moments where I recognise a melody but never known where it came from until now. Anyway yeah liked this one. 4 stars
I may be reading a bit too much into this, but if I’m picking up on the signals correctly, I think Marvin is interested in getting it on.
pretty good
I need to wait for an evening with an S.O. to listen to this all the way through. It honestly feels ridiculous listening on my own or while working. But that means it nails what it's trying to do.
I'm loving Marvin Gaye. However, I still think that his other album was better than this one.
I heard D'Angelo a little while ago, if that was baby making music, this will rock your world. We start off with the very well known title track, and we can expect that energy all throughout. Well composed, well performed, I would snag the record. I could've given it another listen to start enjoying those subtle background details. 4/5
Beautiful 70s soul, funk. Will never be my genre. Fantastic vocals.
Moins bien que What s going on mais banger quand même
Good
I love this album about as much as I love this album cover. I really like the album cover.
Wonderful album about making love. Specifically getting it on. Instrumentals are lush and perfect, vocal performances are tender and perfect. Great listen for the right mood and time. 3.85/5
This is wonderful. So much packed into just over 30 minutes. Really wonderful.
Love Marvin Gaye, and this albums great. Only wish it was a little bit longer
Sensual soul
Great, more to the artist than I thought.
Be careful with this album. I listened to it while at the grocery store, and now I’m pregnant. And I’m a guy, so…
Beautiful soul music!!! Loved it
A fun little listen. Because “Let’s Get It On” is so well known, it’s a little comical to hear it as track 1. However, it really set the tone for an album that explores love and intimacy on both physical and emotional levels. The influence is obvious- I was constantly reminded of Prince and Thundercat during this listen
It's a great album. But musically too close to "What's going on". Except the 2 last songs - which I enjoyed the most (except the women's moaning - I never understand why someone would add this)
The title track is a classic, and his voice is great. 4 stars
4.5
A classic. I really like his sound.
"Marvin, Marvin, it's Chuck. Your cousin, Chuck Gaye. You know that sexy ass sound you're looking for? Well, listen to this!" *Holds out phone as Marty slides up to the mic. Great stuff. Great voice. He finds his way into your soul and stays with you the entire album. The titular track will make the playlist of course.
I mean, for what this is, it's excellent.
A/small-axe-2-5/ e Let’s Get It On! "Außerdem führt dieses Lied die Liste der besten Lieder für ein romantisches Abendessen an. Der Übernachtungsgast, der diesen dezenten Hinweis nicht versteht, kann wohl getrost als uninteressiert aussortiert werden." https://shorturl.at/yaO3U ;) c
Actually nice listen. Classic.
A little too one note for my tastes, but there is no denying the sheer force of nature that is a Marvin Gaye song.
smooth, sexy and emotional. Just how i like it
This is a great album, all bangers. Incredible vibes.
SOUL. Another all-time soul classic from one of the goats, this time bringing us essential babymaking jams.
my clothes flew off as soon as I hit play. I can't believe this album starts with THE babymaking song I will say, it's great when you get an album that really opens your eyes to where modern artists get their inspirations. I swear I could hear some Anderson .Paak on some of these songs. Standouts: Let's Get It On • If I Should Die Tonight • Keep Gettin' It On
man when that first note hits you just know you're in for a great one
I prefer (and assume we'll see?) What's Going On... but this is still a great album.
I've already listened to his album (8). The prime years of Marvin Gaye.
amazing and soulful
Soulful and smooth, his vocals are unbelievable, this is very much an easy listen album
A classic.
Oh yeah, now this is the Marvin we love!
This guy does not know how to make bad music.
Excellent album, though the saxophone solos do get a bit much for me at some point
Music for making babies
very good shit.
Ahhh, lets get it on...
I could feel the 70s shag carpet as I listened to this album. I will never be as smooth or sexy as Marvin Gaye but this album let's me pretend I am.
Surprisingly short! There's a joke in there somewhere...
This album was a great old school r & b album by one of the greats! Very very much what I think of when. I think music for getting it on too haha 😂 but over all good album
not as good as What's Going On but still great. What a voice. I got pregnant listening to it.
A controversial album due to the almost illegal levels of sexiness. Initial measurements with a standard Sex-O-Meter™ immediately pegged the needle, unbelievably more than a full Barry White. Continued measuring caused the meter to explode. Caution is advised while listening. Damn. Excellent album by an amazing artist.
Groovy and brief. 4/5
Zalige stem, goeie band en arrangementen. Mss wat veel van hetzelfde. Toch 4 sterren
Always fun
Heard of them, never listened to them. It’s ok
romantical marvin gaye
Okay yeah this was sexy, almost cartoonishly so at some points
I'd like to thank this list for helping me discover my love for Soul and Motown Now I can go nick all me Nana's CDs lol
I am somewhat familiar with Marvin Gaye, though the songs I know are not on this album. The only song I knew from this album was Let’s Get It On.
Sweet soul music.
The frustration with Gaye's album is how singles-focused they are -- when they're good, they're GOOD
If sex were music, it would be Marvin Gaye. This is probably him at his sexiest. Also the title track is like a jumpscare if you forget that it's on this album. Solid album, definitely worth a listen.
A good soul record. The title track is legendary but I'm always fond of its sequel that most people don't know. I really like this one. Maybe my favorite Marvin Gaye so far.
Loved it
Perfect album!
I prefer protest Marvin Gaye to sexy Marvin Gaye, But this was a relaxing listen. After having sung all of those songs, I really hope that he did get it on and it was worth it.
To state the obvious Marvin Gaye has a beautiful voice. Hard not to like and a great Sunday album. Only slight reservations about being a bit one pace with 2 tracks ostensibly the same on 30 mins. What a nice sound though. Low 4/5 (7/10)
Play anyone this album and the descriptive word that's likely to come to their head first is "smooth." Damn this is a smooth record. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone with a pulse who finds it objectionable. Marvin Gaye sounds deeply in love and out of that made one of the all time most romantic LPs of all time. Its a shock when it ends after only 30 minutes but I admire Gaye not stretching beyond the hits.
Its a solid to high 4 for me, could have been higher if it covered a bit more ground I find it a bit one note, even though i do enjoy the one very well done note
Not sure why all the hate for this, it’s a landmark album for both funk and soul and explores some complex themes about sex, love and longing, particularly given the context of Marvin’s upbringing and abuse. On the surface, there’s an extremely sensual sound that no doubt influenced more modern R&B, but whereas that took it at face value, running with the sound alone, Marvin’s sincere lyrics give the all important balance and depth that much of that genre lacks. It was also a controversial album given the subject matter and was deemed as a huge risk for Motown to even release it but it gained both critical and commercial success and showed a markedly different side to Marvin following his much more well known and politically themed album _What’s Going On_
Look the guy knew what he wanted
Surprisingly short album but enjoyed & researched about Marvin with Tierney
I enjoyed this album a lot! Classic tracks, well produced. Been getting a few soul records in a row this week, and I think Isaac Haye's Hot Buttered Soul is a better overall album, but Marvin is always great
Not my typical genre but the quality of this album shines through. Hard not to like it.
4.5 stars. The album is well put together. Marvin Gaye is a fantastic artist.
Just To Keep You Satisfied. Favoritas: Let’s Get It On, If I Should Die Tonight, Come Get To This, Just To Keep You Satisfied Menos favorita: Distant Lover #DAY 22: 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die Secondly, a slow and romantic LP from none other than Marvin Gaye himself. From this soul legend I had only heard his acclaimed What’s Going On, a full-on masterpiece of progressive soul. This is his follow-up LP, and it presents a more straightforward smooth soul style, with perfect sensual grooves for dancing with my beloved. As a singer, Gaye is everything one could ask for — he had a sublime range and an expressive ability that could take him from the utmost softness to raw, heart-wrenching passion in a matter of seconds. On the other hand, it’s not as ambitious instrumentally as What’s Going On, but that’s not what it needs to be, since these are songs that call for just the right accompaniment and allow listeners to move however their bodies feel like moving. The opening track is legendary, and I think practically everyone has heard its intro — no wonder it’s been used so much in memes. Don Peake made the guitar sound as if it were flirting with us… It’s nothing short of a passionate song and an undeniable classic. I don’t think the rest of the tracklist reaches that level, but it shouldn’t be overlooked either. For example, Gaye’s lyrics and vocals on If I Should Die Tonight are truly powerful and create a cinematic scene — something that happens more than once on the LP, such as in the sad yet realistic closing track: Just To Keep You Satisfied. I think it was a mistake on my part to listen to it during the day — I feel these are all songs that would hit harder while staring romantically out the window on a rainy night… But I had no other time, and it’s summer, so it’s not raining at all. Jokes aside, the album, though short, ends up feeling somewhat monotonous; it doesn’t have the versatility of its predecessor, and there aren’t as many memorable moments, at least after a first listen. Even so, it’s a more than solid record for Gaye that puts his immense talent as a singer right in front of our eyes. Favorites: Let’s Get It On, If I Should Die Tonight, Come Get To This, Just To Keep You Satisfied Least favorite: Distant Lover
Smoooooth
Marvelous stuff from Mr. Gaye.
One of his best albums! Banger songs, get you groooovvvvyyyyyy.
The rhythm section!
top notch.
There aren’t any profound ideas here, I guess. But when an album is this velvety, who needs profundity?
Feels like I've picked up this whole album by cultural osmosis. Good album! Kanye sample jumpscare on Distant Lover. Overall, 4/5
Album art:2
Smooth as silk
Mercy mercy me I need a cigarette after that. Let's Get It On has the wonderful quality of having a beat that makes for steady, purposeful hip thrusting.
Get it on, the quintessential fuck song, puts the album at a 3 by itself (plus have a sequel that's message is "keep fuckin'", pure genius). But I really should say making love, because although the topic is base, Marvin's sultry, emotional voice caresses the topic and the musical composition is such vulvety perfection.
mais calmo que o what’s going on. um pouco menos interessante. mas muito bom, sem duvidas
My favorite one so far! Love Marvin Gaye and will definitely listen to songs from this album again!
Probably too horny to be listening to at 6am at work, but banger after banger still!
Always felt he is overrated but I was wrong tried to listen to most albums and its good but nothing that made my life change. This album specifically has a special groove that lasts the whole album with a vibe thats tough to equal. I dont love the falsetos yet feel this is a top album for that genere
sexy time activated (it's really 4,5 stars)
Freaky mfer
Are you kidding! Let's Get it On. First note grabbed my full attention as it should. Soulful Marvin. Loved it.
Marvin Gaye has really grown as an artist for me through this list. His second album on the list for me, and this is a solid one, though perhaps not absolute stellar. Though 'Let's Get It On' might be one of the most well known and overplayed love songs (along a few other songs from Marvin), it's still one hell of a tune. And his singing really makes it shine! The other songs on the album don't stand out as much, but I have to say I really enjoyed most of them. 'If I Should Die Tonight' for example has such a good melancholic chord progression that just works great with the guitars and Marvin's singing. Though lacking of hits, and certainly an album that lyrically feels quite "thirsty", I liked this a lot. Perhaps not an album that I will come back to instantly or remember as a particularly good one, but I enjoyed listening to it a whole lot more than a many other albums on this list. Think I will let that be the decider for the album rating!
The album is good, but it’s hard to ignore the over saturated love R&B ballads on it. While they sound great (it is MARVIN GAYE), some songs can feel way too overly cheesy and cringey. Other than that, this is a good record.
One of the sexiest and smoothes albums Ive ever listened to.
you hear let’s get it on and it’s great and you wonder if he can keep it up, if he has the stamina to last. he does, and it’s good, but it’s all basically the same song.
Me listening to this sexy album alone. This is one of the sexiest albums I've ever listened to.
This is soul at its most seductive. Marvin Gaye turns desire into poetry, layering smooth vocals over lush, sensual grooves. It’s a masterclass in restraint and emotion, where every note feels purposeful. Not just a slow jam album — it’s a deeply human record, equal parts vulnerable and confident.
Brilliant soul album
Lugnt o skönt
I really liked the album and was impressed with the vocals and jazziness.
Nice album! 4/5
I like it. Not sure I will ever listen to it again.
Funky
Love Marvin Gaye. However, this one isn't quite as good as What's Going On? Still solid though. 3.5/5
Horniest album so far - and I have listened to 2 Prince albums
I’m pretty sure a couple of people were conceived because of this album. Just a hunch. Weirdly enough, my man problem with this album is that it’s too, uhm, sexy. As someone who really enjoyed What’s Going On, this one felt less smooth and more groovy. Honestly, at times, this really felt like bedroom music, which makes causal listening feel awkward. God forbid you don’t listen to this while doing it and instead driving home from work. The Gowanus Expressway doesn’t need to hear that woman on You Sure Like To Ball moan. Outside that though, it’s still Marvin Gaye. When Marvin hits, he hits and sets the standard for r&b to come. It’s not as close to perfection as What’s Going On for me, but this one still raises to the occasion… Yeah, that’s a bad joke. Favorite track: Let’s Get It On Other hits: Come Get To This, If I Should Die Tonight, Distant Lover, You Sure Love To Ball
Easy, comfortable music. Nice and slow and sultry.

Not much to say about this one other than it’s essential for all fans of soul/r&b.
The OG Baby Maker. The Fire Starter. The Bed Rocker. The Potato Masher. The Bo Jangler. The Clam Shucker. The Meatball Grinder. The Floor Creaker. The Muffin Muncher. The Taffy Puller. The Tongue Twister! I once saw a stat that between the years of 1973-1975, 1 out of every 8 children was conceived to this album. Get freaky, grandma! Of course I just made that statistic up, but I bet you believed it. It doesn’t get much smoother than this, folks. Not something that I’d put on in day-to-day life, but when the mood is right… is there a better choice?
ZERO 808s and and slide notes so had to mark down Aside from this very good
Smooth as silk. What a voice, what a vibe!
very amazing, he has beautiful voice and the bass.... oh honey, so good you you can put it on a hat
Lets Get It On has an amazing vocal performance from Gaye on smooth and satisfying instrumentals. I loved this album, very easy and enjoyable listening. Lyrics are super sex-infused especially in the title track. If I Should Die Tonight and You Sure Love To Ball are personal highlights of the album.
Let's Get It On é um disco muito coeso e uniforme, esbanjando sensualidade, boas melodias e a performance vocal exuberante de Marvin Gaye.
So many layers of lovely. Big ol' sexy orchestra. Where's my silk robe at
Super funky and chill. Sunday morning jams.
Idk I just enjoyed it tbh overall
Talk about a horny album haha. I love the dichotomy of this and “What’s Going On?”. Scathing social commentary versus ‘hey girl let’s get all the way down’. I know there’s a deeper, catharsis behind the album in reality; but it’s just interesting to me, and speaks to his breath of topics he can be so well versed in. Not to mention the music is perfectly funky and R&B-ey.
What a horn dog. My fave track was Just to Keep You Satisfied
Marvin gets his strange
Man the 70s were sexed up eh. Song after song that will inevitably end up on some poor sod's romance playlist for that first night with someone. Bangers though, all of them, in more ways than 1. 4/5
Right up my alley but nothing extremely noteworthy imo after the single up top
Sexy
Amazing R&B. Marvin’s voice is unbelievable
Let’s Get it On. Enough said. Classic.
would
This one puts me in the mood to make sweet love to my honey and fuck all night!
Marvin! One of the best voices ever! Dug the album. Many a baby made to this record!
I didn’t listen to it all but I do like what I heard
4/5. After reading some context in regards to Marvin's life, these songs are much more powerful. It is a therapeutic process of a man recognizing his worth and that his past trauma does not define him. You almost can hear that he is not talking to anyone in particular, but rather using his voice and music to move through these emotions. As far as the full album goes, it's powerful and he takes his time with each one, but it does slow down way too much at certain times that takes away from the experience. It's a great album but it does not land all the way through. Best Song: Let's Get It On, If I Should Die Tonight, Distant Lover
Not my favorite album from Marvin but still a classic.
Let's Marvin Gaye and get it on A short album A sexy album
Well the highlight is certainly the title track, really love that song. Great album overall, and a good 4 stars for me.
Rating: 4/5 | Favorite Track: If I Should Die Tonight --- Marvin Gaye is by far one of the greatest musicians of all time. While I don't love this album nearly as much as What's Going On, this is still a lovely listen with Gaye's excellent vocal performance and lush instrumental arrangements.
I listened to this twice and now I’m pregnant. And I’m a guy.
Yeah, this is a classic. Not much that needs saying here, it's just good. Shrug.
His voice is amazing. the first 3 songs were incredible. But then I think the rest are far weaker. Still a great album 9/10
Thumbs up, thought provoking
Hahahahahhahahhahhahhaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahhahahahahahahaahah
Enjoyed it 👍
This is now the 3rd album by Marvin Gaye that I've listened to as part of this project. That's all of them from the list. The music is soft and gentle and very soulful. I can't listen to that all the time. Too much of that sweet enamel gives me a toothache. But in the right mood and in between, I really like the music. 4/5
Great album, but I like the soul stuff more than the 80s stuff
Ooohh so sweet. Takes me into a time warp of a mid-70s summer groove. The sound is perfection. Mr. Gaye is buttery smooth and so so horny. I had to laugh when I thought “this one track is beautiful, soulful - what’s it called?” and it was “You Sure Love to Ball.” Yeah you do.
Marvin’s sexual prowess on full display, a full half hour album dedicated to fucking, basically. The funk pops right off the page with this one, and Marvin’s vocal range is incredible. The backing band are on point for the entire album, and it’s a true joy. I wouldn’t say my favorite album of his, but a classic indeed.
10/10
First song is a classic romance meme. Whole album is calming, mellow, relaxing.
Sploosh
It's the title track and the only Marvin Gaye I know, but Let's Get It On! Gaye's voice is obviously fantastic and this album wraps you up like a warm blanket. It's a little slow for my taste but it's definitely a nice listen. Instrumentally this is a nice album as well. It's got tight drums, funky wah-wah guitar riffs, sax, and piano parts a-plenty. And clocking in at about 32 minutes, it's a perfect taste of everything. Standouts for me were: "Let's Get It On," "Keep Gettin' It On," "Distant Lover," and "You Sure Love To Ball." Honestly, any of the tracks could be standouts on this one with the exception of the final song, which was kind of a slow bummer at the end of a very good album. I went into this listen thinking it would be a straightforward 3 star experience: very likeable with some good fun tracks that I enjoyed but probably wouldn't revisit too much, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much fun I had with it. Enough that I think it's a clear 4 star album. I would definitely put this whole album on again, but I'd have to be in the right sorta mood...
❤️
An album that's hard not to like — it's just so incredibly easy to listen to and smooth. Maybe it borders on cheesy, but somehow it doesn't put me off; that's how well it's done.
cannot go wrong
Babymakin music…
Good stuff
Marvin Gaye is a national treasure. Let's get it on will forever be a jam -- reminding anyone when it comes on that love is indeed supreme.
Really good
6.5/10 General : chill Favs: Please Don't Stay Once you Go Away; Keep Gettin it On; Distant Lover
A solid and groovy album! I would definitely listen to this album again and recommend it to others!
Porn.
I don’t often listen to soul or Rn’B but I always have time for Marvin Gaye. Fantastic songs & voice
Too many soppy strings for my 2025 ears. Gaye’s voice is perfect though.
Mmhm
Let’s get it on!
Iconic. No notes
It is like an awakening of sexuality and freedom. 4/5
I like my funk a bit funkier, if that makes sense. This is just a bit too smooth for my liking, however that voice is fantastic of course. Plus the oversexed them tips over into cringe at times. Want to give it a 3.5
Great album for some romancing. A classic certainly from the first song and similar theme across the rest to the album.
Another Marvin Gaye album where the title track wipes the rest in quality, but when its that good, does it even matter?
i'm not sure if it's crazier that this guy died because he was shot in the chest by his own father or that in his relatively short time on this earth he was able to release this much awesome music
Mellow, sexy, etc.
freaky on a tuesday morning
Another user wrote "this album oozes soul". I totally agree, but it also oozes sex.
The one-two punch of let's get it on and keep getting it on are almost too much for me. This guy loves to get it on. Great vibe and overall feel of the albums, fun bass, guitar, strings and horns. Really enjoyable album overall. Can definitely see myself getting it on to this. Very classy album given the subject matter.
Get it on, Baby! Probably just liked it for the memes. Smooth and easy bass lines too.
Good
More of a What's Going On fan, but you can't beat Let's Get It On for sexy mood music.
i think i'm finding out from doing this that i actually really like soul
Proper Motown.
By 1973, Marvin Gaye had already proven himself a visionary with What’s Going On, but Let’s Get It On marked a clear shift in focus—from political consciousness to pure, unfiltered sensuality. Where contemporaries like Stevie Wonder and Curtis Mayfield continued tackling social issues, Gaye leaned into something more intimate, turning soul music into an adult experience. This album helped redefine R&B, pulling it away from Motown’s polished pop sound and into a deeper, more expressive realm. The title track? An all-timer. A masterclass in seduction, draped in a warm bed of electric piano, gently weeping guitar licks, and sweeping strings, all locked into a slow, hypnotic groove. And then there’s Marvin—pleading, teasing, pouring every ounce of desire into each note. It’s in the running for the best title track of all time, full stop. Beyond that, Come Get to This delivers an irresistible burst of joy, Distant Lover aches with longing, and You Sure Love to Ball leans fully into the album’s sensual atmosphere. Keep Gettin’ It On circles back to familiar territory—whether as a deliberate continuation or just a little extra insurance that the message was clear. The rest of the album maintains a consistently high bar, even if some tracks don’t stand out as much—not because they aren’t great, but because Gaye’s catalog is so full of moments that are transcendent. The production, led by Gaye and Motown veteran Ed Townsend, plays a crucial role in the album’s impact. The blend of silky smooth instrumentation, airy reverb, and layered vocal harmonies creates a sound that feels intimate yet cinematic—like stepping into a dimly lit room where every sigh and whisper is amplified. Gaye’s vocal delivery shifts between delicate and commanding, setting the gold standard for romantic R&B. Today, Let’s Get It On is an institution, a gold standard, the reason half of the kids born in the ‘70s exist. And while not every track is a peak in his legendary discography, the ones that hit? They don’t just land—they linger.
Solid all the way through. Good for relaxing times
Smooth jams
This will be a breeze to listen to. Marvin Gaye consistently creates pleasant tunes to lay back and just enjoy. Feels like he rarely puts a foot wrong. I have listened to a fair amount of his music before so I know what I'm getting into. Let's Get It On The sex song. Memed to death for its smoothness and cheesy blatant sexuality. Remains memorable in spite of the memes and mockery. And I do think the song is used as a joke simply because it's so good at what it's trying to do. Absolutely iconic from start to finish. A fine performance which enhances what is fairly basic writing. Marvin Gaye's voice just enhances the song so much. Sexy, sensual with the dated production and instrumentation adding charm to the track. One of the great horny songs of all time. 5/5 Please Don't Stay (Once You Go Away) The desperate pleading is honestly pretty charming. The background vocals are great. I think the band does a great job creating that unique Marvin Gaye RNB sound. A solid song which puts me in a good move. Love the instrumentation. Enthralling performance. Greatm 4.5/5 If I Should Die Tonight Opens very abruptly after the first track. The transition is not smooth at all. I like the mix. The keys and violin sit just right in the background. Great bass, decent sax. Lush and powerful. Great song structure, keeps me intrigued throughout. Passionate delivery on the chorus. Good. 4/5 Keep Gettin' it On The sex song 2: electric boogaloo. Infectious charisma, can't help but smile at the cheesiness. The control he has of his voice is just unlimited as to how impressive it is. It's so cheesy, but I'm having a great time. 4.5/5 Come Get To This Love the way the song opens. The background harmonies create a delicious atmosphere. A completely different rhythm and tempo. Don't really like the loud sharpness of the drums, might be a fault of the mix. The background sax absolutely shreds. Not his best track, but the quality's still there. 3.5/5 Distant Lover The chimes are fabulous. Meanders a bit, the verse is slightly messy. Not crazy about the background vocals. The strings and brass instruments create a moment of magic in the instrumental. Great singing as always. The song sounds large and grand. Lovely ending. Good. 4/5 You Sure Love To Ball Fantastic bass work. Not a fan of how the vocal melody evolves. The way he resolves the main vocal line is a bit flat and uninteresting. When they play with the vocal layering with the repetitive chorus playing is really good. Decent. 3.5/5 Just Keep You Satisfied. Some of the lyrics are a bit terrible. The performance oozes soul and desire. He sounds like he knows he was born to do this, the confidence in his own ability is admirable. Background harmonies sound fantastic. The sparseness of the instrumental is a bit of a let down, but it does highlight some great bass tones, and is an effective closer. Feels sentimental and sufficiently powerful. Decent. 3.5/5 While never reaching quite the heights of "What's Going On" or "I Want You" I still think this album deserves its plaudits even if it's only based on performances alone. Feels warm and makes me happy in the same ways other projects of his do. I just love how in tune Marvin Gaye is with his band, and how much they do to enhance the sound of his marvelous performances. Sounds blissful. Not something I'd ever need much persuading to listen to again. Great album, would reccommend. Fave track. Let's Get It On Least fave track. Come Get To This
I feel a little weird, listening to this alone, incredible musicianship in chemistry, however. They really managed to create a work ofart.
Classy
I enjoyed this album
I mean, I do like sex more than politics, but I still prefer What's Going On.
Pretty music
Recognized the Distant Lover/Spaceship sample! Pretty good album
Marvin Gaye possessed the ability to convey raw emotions through his smooth vocals, captivating melodies, and lyrics while creating one of the greatest soul albums in history. Each track on the album is filled with a groove that is lush and often enhanced by a soulful horn section. Notable songs, including the title track "Let's Get It On" and "Distant Lover, remain among the best soul songs ever recorded. Despite being over 50 years since its release, the album remains relevant, feels fresh and continues to evoke an emotional responses. This album is truly timeless. While Justin Timberlake may have claimed to be bringing sexy back. He was mistaken. Sexy never left.
This entire album is basically variations of the same song, but it's a damn good song 7/10 Fave track: Come get to this
this is the legendary follow-up to What's Going On, an album that's just as relevant today as it was in 1971. it's a magical combination of timeless music with a political angle that only grows stronger and more prescient over the decades. Let's Get It On is, obviously, not nearly as concerned with the issues of the day, but in a way, it's just as timeless and relevant as What's Going On. few topics, especially in American culture, are more universal than sex! Marvin Gaye's liner notes give me the impression that this was an album he made to heal from his sexual trauma and repression; you can hear the weight falling off his shoulders as he careens over these tracks. What's Going On might be notable for its songwriting prowess, but Let's Get It On captures Gaye in the raw. the songs are much simpler, but that simplicity serves the sexual theme, giving him plenty of room to feel out each lyric and phrase. everything is super groovy, and deeply intimate. this is definitely a step in a new direction from what Motown had become known for, and I'm glad they gave Gaye the creative liberty to make it happen! we have a whole host of funky, loose, jam-session-like soul and R&B albums to thank him for. strong 8/10.
A classic, a great addition to my 70s/80s playlist. Can't beat a good bit of Marvin Gaye. Best song on the album is If I Should Die Tonight.
Didn't think something I'd like something this sexual. This might be my favorite soul album, my only complaint is that it slowed down one too many times, I wish it would've stayed with the funkier stuff more
Gotta say I really like old RnB & soul
A classic
Classic 1973 soul…love it!
Smooth
Groovy, smutty, record. Had me going 😳😳🌹 the entire album. I'm not familiar with soul, but I enjoyed the album a surprising lot more than I expected 👍
This album really was pretty good, as the critics all seem to purport. This isn’t the type of music I normally listen to, but I can see putting it on from time to time just to mellow out a bit. I could do without the moaning sounds at the beginning of “You Sure Love to Ball” (I always hate this effect, and the title and lyrics could be a bit more subtle as well). Even though this is a blatant sex album, I quite enjoyed it and give it four stars.
Beautiful vibes!
The perfect record for valentine’s day. An album of unabashed odes to straight up raw dogging it shouldn’t be as good as this, but Marvin’s got the juice to make it work. Smooth as hell vocals from Motown’s golden boy and Jamerson’s unmistakable thumping bass, this is one sexy half hour ride. I could have done without the bongos and the tambourine: the unsexiest of all the instruments.
8.53
Spectacular. One of Marvin Gaye’s best and fits its title cause everything gives an erotic vibe. Oh and the opening track will NEVER get old.
Martin Gaye- Let’s Get it On || 4.4/5⭐️ ༘˚⋆𐙚。⋆𖦹.✧˚ WE GOT AN RNB ALBUM. the jazzy instrumentals on this are SOOO GOOD. especially for track three. very soulful and yk. charged. his vocals are super smooth and very like dreamlike with the way it’s mixed. and this album is extremely consistent. very good all throughout. i can see how this album is a staple for /and help shaped the rnb genre. stand out songs- let’s get it on, if i should die tonight💕💕, keep getting it on, come get to this💕💕💕, you sure love to ball
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️— 4[.4] of 5 stars THIS THING GROOVAY. In all seriousness, this thing is an amazing collection of 8 solid, chill, relaxing tracks. Love the horns and funky guitars on this, and his insanely smooth and soulful vocals, along with his amazing songwriting just puts the icing on the cake. From those iconic first 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝔂 😜 notes at the beginning of the title track to the delicate strings and vocals at the end, this album offers a level of “feel” and in-the-zone-ness (is that a word??) that I honestly really enjoyed. I also loved a lot of the more subdued, emotional parts of this album (for example, IISDT and Distant Lover). Favourites: If I should Die Tonight⭐️, Let’s get it on (iconic), Distant Lover. Dislikes: You Sure Love to Ball (NEOT a fan of those “sound effects” at the beginning)
Rating - 4(.5)/5. > i like the first song LOL. I actually really like this album…. Please dont stay hits too. I LIKE KEEP GETTING IT ON AS WELL. This album is so freakster wtf Mr. Gaye. Come get to this was rlly good, prob my fav. Overall rlly groovy. Im so bad at writing these (╥_╥) > thumbs up: the whole album methinks. Thank you Mr. Gaye for this masterpiece.
Best of the Gaye’s I’ve heard on this list. Isn’t preachy or fucking depressing.
A little odd as this is a part of my "first thing in the morning" routine but it is a wonderful album. I'm not sure who had the more tragic end of life between him and Sam Cooke. On the subject of the music, well, its sublime. The lyrics are a little cheesy but that both to be expected of the genre and he does them credit in his cadence and voice.
Not necessarily my favorite genre but a good album. Sultry, R&B, a good time for all
Classic
Shit, as a dude my loins are moist. Yes I'm walking the dog in the morning humidity, but damb dude. What does this music do to the ladies.
Classic
Fav: If I Should Die Tonight Least Fav: You Sure Love To Ball
HORNY
A nicely cohesive album with a KILLER lead track - all time classic. The man can sing. It's a bit sexy and moody for everyday listening I think - but when the moon hits your eye....
Again so much here. It's so hard to separate his violent death, his beating by his father as he grew up. What a wonderful LP. Greasy A/F! Well produced, like the big bass and percussion. Liked "Ball" & "On". The LP flowed from song to song. As a little kid I recall Marvin's skull cap and took to sporting one too.
Amazing, smooth and sexy
Love this album. Smooth in a way that's not boring. Super groovy and emotional.
Shagging : The Album Got pregnant just listening to this. It's a smooth, sexy and soulful jam, and I'm here for it.
A remake of Marvin Gaye, remixed and therefore sounds good. The compilation of songs is a bit too soft for me. What can you say about Marvin Gaye, indescribably good, intense vocals - goose bumps!
Good times!
4.25
Besides the opener that is frankly impossible for me to take seriously anymore, this is an incredible listen. Distant Lover, Keep Gettin It On, and pretty much every other song is a delightful combination of Marvin's old style with new funk attitudes. Just a shame the title track is a punchline too often today.
Tiene rizz
3.5
The opening song is an absolute classic, and the rest of the songs are just as good.
Pretty chill
listened to again bonafide classic and probably the source of many children
Initially, it caught me off guard, but I enjoyed it more with repeatable listening.
Incredibly sexy and smooth, Martin has some banging vocals!! Sweet, sensual and romantic. I liked it, it's so very groovy. I'd definitely dance to this, what's interesting is that the album is pretty short! Although I think it does alot with so little. The instrumentals are great and they really translate the sensuality and longing. My favorites have to be "You Sure Love To Ball" "Please Don't Stay (Once You Go Away)" and finally, "Distant Lover", probably means I enjoy the slower and tender side of these love songs more.
one of the most gorgeous classic r&b albums of all time
Really enjoyed this 8/10
Yay! Our last Marvin Gaye album was just a week or so ago, so we get to think comparatively! My favorite way to form thoughts around music!!! This does share many similarities on sonics with What's Going On, but where it differs is that most songs here are really in the pocket - theres just a bit more groove to provide some backbone to the songs. That's not true for everything though, which allows me to talk about my favorite song on here. "If I should die tonight" is just so beautiful in it's sentiment and execution. The swelling strings and horns, the light, plucky guitars fading in and out, and Marvin putting his whole heart and soul into the vocal performance. Wow, such a pretty pretty pretty song! Another highlight, "You sure love to ball" gets back into the more groovy (and almost bossanova) territory - and I think its a nice microcosm of the other change this album sees in comparison to Whats Going On; there's no social outcrying here. It's just one smooth love song after another. Love proclamations and grapplings with ones feelings surrounding a lover, these are what we get treated to on this record.
Album 649 of 1001 Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On (1973) Rating : 4 / 5 So smooth. Awesome album. Not something I'd typically go to but will turn up the volume a bit if I hear it playing. One reviewer said "I listened to this with my wife and now I'm pregnant, so - five stars."
Pretty sure I’m pregnant now.
Love the vocals and smooth rhythms.
A Soul staple and classic. This album should be included in sex education classes. It's worth noting that it requires some supplementary items to be fully enjoyed: a home cooked dinner, a bottle of your favourite wine, appropriate mood lighting, and a Fine Piece of Ass. 4.5/5

Album Cover 4/10
I had to listen to Here My Dear some weeks ago and the experience of that album as my first taste of Marvin Gaye's music was quite the first impression because it was pretty nice sonically but the spilling of guts gave it this dark and sad undertone that I just couldn't ignore. I write this here because I didn't get to be very detailed for my thoughts on Here My Dear but also because by comparison, getting to hear Let's Get it On is almost night and day in the mood and lyrics. The obvious meme thought about this album is the one with the classic sexy riff in the title track that just screams "this album is about sex to love your girl by and like, yeah that's true but it's also not EVERYTHING this album has to offer either. It's just perfectly suited to soundtrack a cozy afternoon with your partner (or by yourself) or simply dancing to really well composed dancey soul. It's really hard not to enjoy this album because it's effortlessly great at the instrumental choices it has, Marv's voice is smooth yet full of passion for the subject of his songs, you can believe he feels so strongly about this woman which only makes the way it presents these emotions even better. Just, great stuff once again
Oh so smooth
Not his best, but that's a legendarily hard bar to clear, even with such an excellent record.
I think this album reminds me of like 70's soul music.
