What an album! 4 stars cos it's good and a bonus star as it's live and from the same year that Pretty Woman and She Love's you (Beatles) were topping the charts and this just blows them out of the water

So much energy! Songs are lively, driven by heavy piano, Jerry’s awesome raspy voice hammering out punchy rhythms, and winding bass lines. Liked this a lot.

Jerry Lee Lewis fires on all cylinders on this live recording. I've never heard any of his stuff, but this made me want to. Absolutely intense and high power playing that makes you want to move and makes you feel like you're there. The album is short which is good, because the album does start to feel a bit repetitive near the end. Overall it's a good album that I will listen to again.

Auch Rock‘n‘Roll ist ja nun nicht gerade mein Steckenpferd. Hier ist der zeitliche Kontext ebenfalls wieder interessant: Album ist von 1964, als die Hochzeit des Rock‘n‘Roll längst vorüber war. Und da sitzt ein Mann am Klavier und rockt. Muss man so auch erst mal hinkriegen.

The mix is terrible but IT DOESN'T MATTER because this is pure amphetamine rock 'n' roll. Jerry Lee Lewis is an absolute madman, and a 12-bar blues never sounded so fuckin' wild. Completely unhinged, and I'd've been disappointed if it was any other way.

This is often cited as one of the best live albums of all time, and I can imagine the energy of being there in '64. At this point it's dated.

My first impression is that, given Jerry Lee Lewis' reputation as a wild man, Live At The Star Club, Hamburg is downright sedate. Okay, I'm exaggerating, but as a vocalist, Jerry Lee doesn't begin to approach the energy level of a performers like Little Richard and James Brown. Lewis' piano playing is another matter. I'd never appreciated it before, but it's clear from this recording that Lewis laid the foundation for virtually every stylistic aspect of rock 'n roll piano. The staccato repeated chords, the driving boogie pattern played by the left hand while the right adds ornamentation, the sweeping, crashing glissandos added for punctuation, the omission of the 7nth in block chords, all these stylistic devices were repeated virtually unaltered by every rock 'n roll pianist that followed. Okay, maybe all of these innovations were present in the blues and honkytonk before Lewis got hold of them, but the aggressiveness and manic energy he imbued them with were all his.Okay, having listened to the whole album, Lewis does get more animated and energetic as a performer as the album goes along, and at the time, hearing a white performer shake the rafters like this must have been astonishing. But having witnessed virtually the entire history of rock 'n roll, this set can be described as merely energetic rather than crazed, otherworldly, an act of violence or similarly over the top descriptions. On the other hand, in terms of rock 'n roll piano, this recording has never been equaled, much less bested, as far as I know. How about the songs? Well, what can I say? They're basic rock 'n roll, nothing special. So, we've got okay songs, a good vocal performance, a good band performance, and incredible rock 'n roll piano. For that last part alone, I'll give LATSCH a 4/5.

A rip-roaring tour through the high points of rock and roll: raw, raunchy and demanding to be played loud. Adrenaline courses through the whole performance and the songs really benefit from a live recording, where they aren't stifled by any limitations of the studio at the time. "Good Golly Miss Molly" and "Money" in particular felt like they could raise the dead. Ultimately though, I couldn't escape the feeling that on record, it's all style and not loads of substance (a statement to enrage the guardians of old time rock and roll). Yes, it's a relentless, thrilling performance. Yes, I'm sure it was an amazing night for everyone at the Star Club, and yes, of course I wish I'd been there. But it's all about the electric atmosphere. Once you've heard this riotous take on one or two rock and roll numbers, there isn't much else to be uncovered. Everything is pumped up to 11, the piano is by and large the only instrument to be foregrounded, and every solo on there is a massacre of repeated notes and frenzied glissandos. It's wild, but some more light and shade (beyond "slowing it down" with "Your Cheatin' Heart") would have helped it as a listening experience. Live, this would very likely be a 5* gig. In the right mood, it would be a 4* album for me. It's an undeniably great starting point to unearth the spirit of rock and roll, and glimpse what it must have been like growing up as a teenager in the late 50's/early 60s. Oh, the wild abandon of it all!

hit after hit, enjoyable

This is a 1964 live rock album by pianist Jerry Lee Lewis from the Star Club in Hamburg, West Germany. It's regarded as one of the best live rock album/performance, and I have to agree. It seems hard to capture a live musical act and make it sound good, but this album did just that. You feel like you are actually there in the Star Club with the crowd, enjoying the rock and roll. I can't believe this whole album came from one single night of rock and roll and sounds like it could have been made in a studio. Very well produced and I'm jealous of everyone who saw this concert live.

Incendiary!

Ok fine you got me this time, website. Yesterday, I rated A Hard Day's Night and claimed not a single rock album came close to them this early in the 60s. And here we have a bombastic live album that came out the very same summer. First of all, I wanted to note that the Spotify version is softer and doesn't even include all the songs, so stick to the Youtube playlist... even though the pause between songs is annoying. This was a time when rock n roll artists had just a couple well-known songs and then they would just do covers of other rock n roll stars. And when those ran out, they would seek out the R&B songs. The Beatles are also a victim of this, just look at Beatles for Sale which is mostly covers. But at this point, 1964, rock n roll is about over and rock has already begun evolving from dance-craze madness to taking inspiration from blues (Rolling Stones, Clapton), pop or folk tunes (Beatles, Beach Boys, Dylan), or raw garage style (Kinks). The classics have already been established by the rock n roll legends. And here we have Lewis, one of the former legends himself known for "Great Balls of Fire" and "Whole Lot of Shakin Going On," taking people's classics and spiraling them out of control. These songs are wild that go beyond any studio effort you see in classic rock n roll. They're fast-paced. The instruments are loud. The vocals screech are raw and screech with passion. You can hear the audience go wild in each song, and Lewis engages them between each song, encouraging them to get loud or dance. Even the way he talks to his band member, "play it right," is just hilarious and gets the audience excited for what's to come. Remember these are classic songs everyone knows, and Lewis is putting his crazy spin on them. Just take "Money That's What I Want" for instance. I love the twist he put on those last two minutes between his vocal sounds and the improved instrumentals. But all the songs have this insane wailing or grunts that carry the spirit of rock n roll. I've got to be honest, I didn't think I would ever give a live album 5 stars. But the weaknesses I typically face in live albums isn't here. There aren't any long tracks that make for unpleasant listening exercises (looking at you, Allman Brothers' At Filmore East). And the lofi sound works really well with Lewis's rawness. Meanwhile, it's full of classic hits and has energy and power that you couldn't possibly find in a studio album. Other albums like Frampton Comes Alive and Thin Lizzy's Live and Dangerous were full of fillers and suffered from lack of engagement. This is everything I'd want in a live album, and I'm happy to say it is so far my favorite.

From today it sounds like generic rock'n'roll although the vocal is nice timbrewise and the live atmosphere is awesome.

It's short and sweet. It didn't blow my mind, and some of the mixing was weird with the guitar and bass seeming too quiet a lot of the time, but Jerry Lee is an undeniably great performer and that comes through here. Props to the drums for sounding deadly here too

jesus, for its time, this must have been huge. my closest approach to this music so far has been through early beatles' records, so hearing it direct has been awesome. his commentary on whole lotta shakin' becomes a little uncomfortable considering he was married to his cousin when this was recorded - although i suppose she was legal by then. sigh. anyway, i still honestly don't think i like him much, but as i say, it feels like, in the late 50s and early 60s, the way he played that piano must have been a revelation.

Another live album, Alex is on suicide watch. At least Apple Music had the decency to only have 22 minutes worth of this album for me to listen to. I call that mercy. I'm more interested in reading about Lewis' bizarre marriages than I am listening to this album. He had seven wives, some overlapping because he married before finalizing divorces. His third wife, when he was 22, was his 13 year old cousin! Who does this guy think he is? Drake? She alleged every type of abuse imaginable, and two of his wives after that died before divorces could be finalized. Long and short of it, we're dealing with a psychopath. You can hear that energy in the music. Pretty hilarious that the marriage to his cousin kneecapped his rock 'n roll career, but he thereafter found success in country music. The South is just different. Anyway, the music's as expected. Live, energized, but I won't return to much here. Favorite tracks: Great Balls of Fire, Money. Album art: It's a live photo, who cares? At least the mixture of fonts is cool. 2.5/5

A zippy live album for sure. There's no dynamic contrast or distinction to be found, but the rollicking energy of Lewis and the crowd still provide an enjoyable listen.

More artists should take note of the two minute songs and 22 minute album. It's like being ambushed by rock n' roll, it runs in, assaults you briefly, then disappears again. This guy must have been mindblowing in his time, but it's hard to escape what a terrible human he was. But still, catchy as hell throughout, a fun interlude.

Questionable choices from JLL but also undeniable talent. Sounds like an epic concert with tons of energy.

Lewis is an absolute master, and a defining figure in a particular type and era of rock and roll. Though there is a touch of a Showman's routine about it that slightly diminishes it for me - dampens the true soul of it a bit. Which is not to say this isn't a ripping live show recording.

This recording has two things that perennially delight my ears: An ageless, matured voice and piano that inexplicably sounds like something more organic than a piano is. The recording technique makes those elements, and the performances generally, shine. The rock is consistently crashing, and better sequencing and recording of the crowd would bump it from great to really great. For example, the two-parter of What'd I Say: I can tell what the slowing down and starting back up was, but I want to feel it too.

I really prefer the doo-wop and chorus sound of the 60s rather than the boogie-woogie music of that era. This album mainly plays into that "boogie" dance sound, but it's not as interesting as other albums of that time. Granted there wasn't much innovation in this genre anyway, but the muddied words, loud crowd, and simple, overused progressions don't help. Favorite track: Your Cheating Heart

It feels like an important piece, with some definite classics that I didn't know were by Jerry Lee Lewis. I love his passionate voice on the record and the liveliness that the band plays with. I like it more than other live albums during this time. Highlights: 3, 4, and 7.

Its incredible how a live performance from nearly 60 years ago can make its way to streaming platforms with this level of sound quality. The energy contained on this album is extreme, the piano is killer, but Jerry Lee Lewis' voice on some songs is really not for me. I think being at the Star-Club in Hamburg at that time was a legendary experience, and I appreciate the fact that I can hear the best parts from that moment at any time. 3/5.

Jerry Lee Lewis has some incredible piano licks, and this essentially should be a great live rendition of his greatest hits, but the quality of the recording is scuffed enough that it detracts from the overall experience, rather than making you feel in the audience.

I started listening to this at work, and I needed to stop because I wanted to be able to sit and appreciate it fully. WOW! I love this album. I had never really listened to Jerry Lewis but I am a HUGE fan now!

Meh. My parents’ music and hard to look past the weird personal life.

I should preface my comments by saying I wasn't a hugeJerry Lee Lewis fan, but as far as a live album goes this album really captures the urgency and energy of early Rock and Roll! JLL pretty much destroys the piano the way he is pounding out the songs and the urgency behind his delivery. At the time this was recorded JLL pretty much was running out of favour in the U.S. market but not so in Europe. People were still hungry to hear early Rock and Roll from the U.S., especially in a small club. The energy between the artist and audience is intense! The piano and drums take center stage in the mix, maybe to much so, but that is a minor complaint considering this was straight in your face Rock and Roll. I love the way he delivers Your Cheating Heart and feel that this is more the lane that he is best suited for, country honky tonk with a touch of blues. He ended up going in that direction later producing some of his best stuff. Favorite Songs: Your Cheatin Heart and Lewis Boogie. Give it a 3.5

The essence of rock n roll. Electrifying and fun.

Really surprising addition to this list, but I'm glad they did. This album is electric, and Jerry Lee Lewis' backing band somehow manages to match his energy. It's essentially a greatest hits record, which Lewis keeping the set short, and the backing band keeping things loose, but on the edge of things falling into chaos. Fav Tracks: Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On, Long Tall Sally and Great Balls of Fire Rating: 3.5/5

This record does a great job of capturing the electricity of a Jerry Lee Lewis performance. You can almost hear the stage lights and beads of sweat rolling off his forehead. That almost manic energy feels like a kind of proto-punk. Favourite tracks: "Money", "Long, Tall Sally"

Well, I think I would have enjoyed this a lot more if it weren't live. Probably the studio version would have gotten 4 or 3 stars. But I don't really appreciate live recordings much. Especially if I haven't heard the studio version of (most of) the songs yet.

The 12-bar blues chord progressions get incredibly samey and predictable, but gives Jerry a chance to smash the shit out of his piano and put loads of energy in, which sounds great. My foot was tappin' and my ass was boppin' through the whole album, but probably won't listen again. Gotta give it credit coz I can tell how hot this fire was back in '64.

Always slightly sceptical of live albums being part of this unless there is something unique or different compared to a regular live performance. Nonetheless there is so much vibe and energy! Recording quality is fantastic. If I was rating the gig it might be a 10/10. As an album it's 8/10

This may be the first album that I've felt was too short. It's a shame a few songs were missing, but listened to it twice to make up for it and was bopping along to it both times.

I remember seeing a video of JLL live and he played every song like it was the last song of the night. This performance has that same energy. The tunes are a bit tired so many decades later, having been etched into my brain from weddings and highschool dances.

“Live at the Star Club, Hamburg” by Jerry Lee Lewis (1964) Jerry Lee Lewis is a rock and roll icon. But here we have a record that is, in a word, horrible. This museum display is evidence of everything that’s wrong with albums made from live recordings. I’m sure the concert (qua concert) was great, but this record (qua record) is organized crime. It’s a fecal fossil. If this is your first exposure to Jerry Lee Lewis, please don’t listen to it. Please, please do not listen to this album. In an attempt to capture lightning in a bottle, it ends up with a few fireflies in a leaky butterfly net. Comparing these live recordings with the studio originals reveals the poor quality: none of the classic Sun Records lead vocal reverb, and a very bad mix with too little guitar and virtually no bass, tinny drums, sloppy pitch control, extremely limited tonal and dynamic range on the piano and (ironically and fatally) virtually NO audience interaction. It’s a blasphemous denial of Jerry Lee Lewis’ genius as a recording artist and as a musician. Also, the tracks on this album scramble the order of the songs from the original concert (and the Spotify abridgment gives only eight of the album’s thirteen songs), thus denying Jerry Lee Lewis’ chosen set arrangement. It slaughters his artistic integrity. Lamentable. Jerry Lee (age 85), I hope you read this, and I join you in shaking a fist and raising a finger at Smash/Mercury. 1/5

This guy must have blisters on his fingers. He is a madman on the piano. I loved every minute of this 22 minute live show. I have a real soft spot for this kind of bluesy jazzy show, and I wish I could go back in time and see this in person. In the meantime, while we wait for the delorean to be built, this album does the job. Anyone else looking for some retro live bluesy vibes: check out BB King's Live at Cook County Jail, one of my favs.

Seems like what they have up on Spotify doesn't have all the tracks from the original album which is kinda disappointing. Its funny cause I'm reading a book about krautrock right now and there's a whole chapter about the Hamburg red light district scene from this era and the Star Club in particular. Didn't realize such an iconic live album came from their efforts to put out records. I was pretty into all the big Sun Records artists back in high school. Even had a Sun Records t-shirt. Probably liked Jerry Lee the most of all for his unique phrasing and sheer energy. He never seemed to be able to really break out much beyond his initial success like Elvis or Johnny Cash but he really seemed to embody the real spirit of rock and roll more to me. And that is very much in evidence on this recording. Kinda like that it is very simply recorded and retains a sort of rawness that sounds very honest and accurate to the live experience.

Some of the vocal little bits where he's just laughing or doing odd noises kind of annoy me, but I think I enjoy live Jerry Lewis more than recorded. Can't deny the legacy of Jerry Lewis. The funny thing is lots of this was likely scandalous and a "bad influence" on the youth.

I've not been a huge fan of Jerry Lee Lewis but listening to this you can really feel that old rock & roll thing. These bands were game changers, must have been a great time to be a teen.

I enjoyed this album, I didn't realize how influential he was. I have always enjoyed the song, "Money" but had no idea is was a JLL original.

So I read this dude married his cousin when she was 13 and he was 22. Then people were like "wtf Jerry" He was like "She's 15 God darnit" as though that made it okay. Even illegal in his lie. 4 stars.

Very American, talent guy. But it's definitely tainted by knowing he married his young cousin.

This album is just fun, there’s an electricity to listening to Jerry Lee Lewis. Great balls of fire is soooo infectious but the rest of the album is just as much a raucous good time

Typically, I don't care for live albums. The audience noise doesn't add much to the listening experience; however, a live performance does provide insight into the quality of the artist, stripping away the façade of studio production editing. That being said, the songs on this albums sound similar to Jerry Lee Lewis' greatest hits that were recorded in the studio versions, showcasing the skills of a great musician.

This was just SO good. This album is sheer energy. Lewis' passion and charisma really shines through, making you feel like you're part of the audience. Just so damn good.

This is a pretty low rating when I think about how fun this album is. There is a lot of energy and fun in this album. But it lacked discipline and was all over the place on time and what not.

There's no doubt that this performance is full of energy and that the crowd was having a great time. Nobody could bring it on with a piano like Jerry Lee could and this album captures that energy. For me, the album tends to wear out by the time it gets to the end because I prefer more variety, however, the fun level pumps this album all the way through and is effective in demonstrating for the listener, the amount of energy present in a Jerry Lee concert.

There's a passion and an energy to this, which I can understand why it was such a craze. A lot of the songs do come across as formulaic, but it's fun, just gets old after a little. It'a definitely the proper length, at 22min. I also didn't realize Jerry Lee Lewis was responsible for more than "Great Balls of Fire". Favorite tracks: "High School Confidential", "Money"

Solid rock n roll. Might be because rock has evolved so much, but this album didn't stick out to me in current times.

very elvis but clearer words (a bit) hahaha but u can just imagine you're on the dance floor in the 1960's, wearing 60's dress and hair teeming with hairspray then this came on. im sure it's a lot of fun.

This was surprisingly fun, I didn't know what to expect but I enjoyed every second of it. Just like honky tonk rock n roll or something, but overflowing with energy. I recognised a little Richard song so not sure how much of it was covers. And it only went for 22min! Holy shit what a great amount of time for an album I've never heard before. 4/5.
