Reviews (page 9 of 10)

Good energy but songs are bleh

Short concert, stolen music. The performance is energetic, but the cloud of "white man popularising the black man's music" hangs heavy here. Classic rock & roll, albeit distilled.

Not bad. Just all sounds the same. Early 60s rockabilly isn’t my thing. 2.75

Een los nummer af en toe is wel ok, een heel album wat veel. Niet heel goed.

Ok - skipped a few and not in a hurry to go back

I was glad I got to listen to this and hear Jerry pound the same chord over and over again and then run his finger up and down the piano. It compelled me to Goggle “Was Jerry Lee Lewis a good piano player?” Apparently there’s some strong opinions. There were flashes of him showing better playing (Your Cheating Heart), but I was pretty underwhelmed. I was expecting to love this, and am glad I didn’t. Because he was a bad guy.

Zu Rock n Roll für mich

All the songs sounded the same and he doesn’t have the best voice.

Eh, not that interesting.

23 minutes of exactly what I expected.

Quick listen. A lot of it blended together for me, didn’t hate it and found myself head bopping a bit but it didn’t resonate. Doesn’t help that I don’t like live albums that much, generally prefer studio versions of songs.

WHY MORE COUNTRY?!?: THIS IS THE THIRD COUNTRY ALBUM IN A ROW AND I WANT TO KMS. Added to this streak is an album by one of music's biggest weirdos. Married his 13 year old cousin? Racist? Shit music? Don't think you'll catch me lacking listening to this on spotify again. A stolen live set by a dickhead.

married his 13 yr old cousin, the less acceptable Elvis which is saying something..... Great Balls is a tune though 2 stars

Pure chaos

Bit repetitive

A bit too short to truly get into it. The album is lacking the spark that give you a feeling of what it was like to be there, despite the crowd being on the record.

This is a lot in the morning.

Live albums always suck

First and foremost, Lewis was a creep, a pedo, a misogynist and probably a host of all other things. Based on that alone, I'll never listen to this ever again. However, in the effort to put those aside and rate this album based solely on the music...That said, there are a host of Black entertainers from that time who received a fraction of the popularity, based solely on the color of their skin that brought down the house and paved the way for this style of music to become popular. It was a solid 22 minutes and was probably very entertaining for the crowd present. Can't really sanction any of this, for the aforementioned reasons. Much like Elvis, he took popular songs and made money by exploiting them. Based solely on the music and the history, I'd give this a 5/5. Based on everything else, I'd give it negative rating if I could. I'll split the difference and give it a 2.

Great Balls of Fire!

A lot of live albums so far. I wonder if this is just the list makers way of getting around the "no greatest hits" thing.

Great balls of fire gets this the 2nd star.

I knew a few of the songs, but I didn’t really get into it. Like the last album, he has a lot of energy and it would have been fun to see. But I didn’t really get into the “use the piano like a drum” style. It felt too constant/overpowering, and didn’t have enough style. Also, his singing is not as good live as Cooke’s.

Not as compelling as Cooke's album. His voice isn't particularly charismatic. But also acknowledge some amazing piano amd his place in music history. -1 star weird biographical ickiness.

First track: "High School Confidential" — I'm immediately uncomfortable. Music was fine, some bops.

I’d rather listen to Little Richard.

This was recorded with a potato. I don't like most live recordings, and this one lives up to that expectation.

Må have været en fed koncert! Der er god energi, men der er noget som ikke helt får mig solgt.

Okay. Maybe groundbreaking in it's day, difficult for me to appreciate. Not exciting or particularly interesting.

This is fun, but pretty sloppy. He just kinda sounds like the creep he was.

The appeal is undeniable, the hammering piano, that southern drawl, the hair flying around, the overtly sexual lyrics. Imagine seeing him in 1964, while The Turtles and The Beatles are wanting to "Get to know you better" and "Hold your Hand" Jerry Lee just wants you to Shake Baby! If we are being honest, Jerry Lee owes Little Richard a fortune for stealing his act. There are however some things that keep me from fully enjoying his music. I usually have no problem separating the artist from the art, however Jerry Lee is a such a piece of shit, it's really difficult. At age 27 he married his 13 year old cousin, she gave birth at 14 years old, a marriage that ended after a decade of abuse. There is also the real truth that Jerry Lee murdered his forth wife, drowning her in the pool. And likely murdered his fifth wife, corner's office citing an overdose. Anyway... here's Great Balls of Fire

ykkös tähden arvostelut ja viiden tähtösen on kyllä huenoa vertailtavaa. emotions vs facts... joo eikyllä mikään maailmaajärisyttävää settiä tässä 25minaskan pinaska... covereita kaikki money (ei bunk band) (eri bisi)

Aika hurjaa menoa.. huoh.. narri.. pää pois tuolta narrilta... tuokaa 1978 thin lizzy live.. huoh.. Ei jaksa näitä vanhoja... laita pää takaisin... laita narri säilöön..

Only half the album seems to be on Spotify but I like the energy.

Ok for a track or two in a bar but wouldn't put this album on myself.

Whole lotta noncin' goin' on

Started it and got to a familiar tune that did nothing for me early on. Stopped listening.

Fun but very samey

Lots of the hits, pretty fun and over quickly.

I should like this but for some reason I don’t. I can appreciate the energy, rock n roll and the amazing piano playing. But overall I’m not feeling anything. And I really hate the vocals. Plus then I read all about this guy and like it even less. 2/5

Я не знаю, что сказать. С одной стороны, запись - ну прям очень не очень. С другой стороны, чел раздаёт конечно стильно. Энергия от него бешеная прёт! А Great Balls Of Fire я точно где-то до этого слышал.

Aren't people who do terrible things supposed to be really talented? This was boring. Sure, the piano playing is impressive, but it's just rock 'n' roll standards played slightly faster than usual. I can find more impressive piano-centered pieces from a century before this album. Thank god it's short, or I'm more than sure I'd hate this.

good but don't like live albums all that much

I think I’m incapable of whatever mood this music requires, it just registers as chaos in my body

The live album helps understand why this music was so popular in 50s. Good for what it was but not stuff I’d ever listen to again. Rating: 2.0

Jerry Lee Lewis puts on a hell of a performance from start to finish for over 20 minutes solid here. And for all my scrutiny over the inclusion of certain live albums on this project, this one at least seemed to serve a purpose. But once again, I'm just really not that into this era of 60s rock and roll, so while I can appreciate the musicianship, I didn't really enjoy the music all that much. Not to mention, Jerry Lee Lewis was a piece of shit. All that said, a high-2, but I'm not going to round up after all.

Can’t believe this guy believes there was no real rock and roll before him. Like bruh you stole your whole style from black musicians. Giving an extra star for being listenable, but you’d be better off listening to a Little Richard set.

I just don’t understand why it’s a live album

Not bad, but nothing special by any means. Plays a mean piano.

Not particularly exciting

Second live album of the week. In retrospect I feel bad for giving the Deep Purple live album a three since I very much enjoyed it and I have come to terms with live albums being a part of this list. This live album is ok but I'd rather have heard the originals by Little Richard, or just the original single versions of Lewis hits. Since the Deep Purple album got a 3 this one gets a 2. Not bad just doesn't really bring anything special or new to the table.

Trite, uninspired, marginally above average vocal performance at best. They did also play a song with a different tempo at some point, I guess that made you a professional blues musician in Germany in the 60s

I have a fondness for the first class of rock 'n rollers, and I've seen some thrilling TV performances from JLL in his heyday. So when I first heard this album years ago, with all the hype surrounding it, I was poised to love it. But frankly, the dude is a one-trick pony. (And a POS to boot.) There are some nice moments here and there, but overall, the performances are sloppy as hell and HE's the problem. I get why he was such an influence. And his records are great. But I'll take Little Richard over this dude any day of the week. There's a cool video of Little Richard in Paris 1966, playing almost the exact same set as this dude, only his band is way tighter. And Little Richard actually wrote his songs.

I tried to put myself in the shoes of those young kids in Hamburg in the early mid 60s. Thought of how The Beatles loved him. But the truth is this did little for me. I couldn’t hear anything but the thought of him marrying his 14 year old cousin.

ok. I can see why it is here but it is just another rock and Roll album now.

These aren't even the best versions of these songs performed at the Star Club in the 60's. Give me The Beatles on speed any day.

High energy but otherwise pretty generic rock and roll piano covers.

Couldn't get to the end of it. Really not a fan of 50s rock n roll.

Nah, not today thanks. Sure the tunes are big, but it grated on me.

Really don't like...

I didn't dislike it, but I didn't like it very much either. Thank goodness for short albums like these, I don't wish to get another 'Made in Japan' anytime soon.

I’m sure this was a hoot in 1964, but it’s just kind of meh for me.

This was a weird one due to Apple Music missing tracks on this album. No real way to find them within the service. So the album I listened to was only 22 minutes. As most live albums, it was filled with annoying crowd noise.

The perfect soundtrack for a first date/family reunion.

Musiikissa ei sinällänsä mitään vikaa mutta ei mitenkään hirveän erityinen live

If you like playing Elvis at 1.5x speed, then you are in luck with this album. This album has "great balls of fire" which I was never a fan of, but I know it's popular so if you like that song, give this a shot.

Not really a big fan of this guy, or this era of Rock N Roll. I get that's essential, but I'm glad it's an evolutionary stepping stone. The spotify album is only 22-1/2 minutes, trimmed from (what seems to be) the original release, timed at 37. It was still too long. It's just not exciting or interesting to me. I know that he was known for his ferocity in live performances, but that doesn't come through to me after hearing so much of what has come after it. I just can't hear it with 1964 ears so I don't think I'll ever truly "get it". 1 = bad 2 = average 3 = good 4 = great 5 = outstanding

Not ma thing!

If you don’t care for Jerry Lee Lewis, this live album is going to make you hate him even more, for sure. However, Spotify has the nonsense lyrics at the end of his cover of Little Richard’s Long Tall Sally transcribed as "a lost bubble leave by the lost bamboo” and I’m DYING.

There was definitely an energy to this album. Besides that though, none of the songs especially stood out to me. There are a few songs I like in here, but there's better versions of them out there that I prefer. My favourite song was probably Good Golly, Miss Molly.

Over rated live time piece. Full of energy but lacking substance

I recognize how important he is to the history of rock n' roll, and I also hear his talent in so many ways. That being said, I just don't like his music very much. I think his style is all just too much for me.

Mostly annoying. Horrible concert to listen to. Does he have any original songs? Goodness gracious i wish my balls were on fire. Id prefer that to listening to this again.

Too short.

The recording sounds so oddly hollow due to the k8ve venue soundscape. The style if rock is fun, and some songs really get into some fun v9cals, but 9verall its just lacking something as a whole listening experience. I suspect I may enjoy individual tracks more as studio recordings. Who knows.

I try to separate the art from the artist for these reviews, and Jerry Lee Lewis is no exception as he's a pedo and an abuser. So, are his contributions to rock and roll still valid despite his behavior? Let's head to a live recording to find out. For starters, what is available on Spotify doesn't seem to be the full Live at the Star Club album experience. It's only 22 minutes and they're almost all short, blazing-fast tracks with ripping piano. I can't help but agree that JLL rocks the club, but I'm still not convinced it's anything special. Maybe he pioneered this style of music, but you can get a similar experience at a piano bar these days. Not to mention, half of the tracks were first made famous by other artists; he's just putting his spin on them. Which is fine, but it's not what I'm looking for when evaluating the "essentialness" of an album/artist. Lastly, I've written about my disdain for live albums several times now on this site. I personally don't think they should be included. And this one is definitely not an exception. In fact, I found the mix to be horrible, and when reading about the recording process, it makes sense. It's just all the instruments blended together on a single mic with some audience ambient recording added in. Overall, there is some great energy in this live show, but I think Jerry Lee Lewis is overrated (though fun) pianist and the recording itself sucks.

I just can't separate the art from the artist on this one. I really liked his boogie woogie energy when I was a teenager, but now I am just imagining the leering perv.

Yeah, a legend - and a weird dude. Not terrible - it's a rollicking live set, but most of the tunes were done better by others

I love Jerry Lee Lewis! But with all the girls screaming really hurts the quality.

The fact that it's short helps this album a lot. It really does feel like the same song over and over.

Yeah man this sounds like music from the 50s. Idk I feel like I can’t enjoy this kind of music seriously at this point I’m only able to see it as a novelty

I think this guy would be weirdly unsettling even if I didn't know his background. I am not a fan of this style either, but I will give credit for pure energy.

Crazy old codger with a great voice performing possibly the least well ageing style of music ever.

It's such a great album. Fantastic collection of songs. JLL is a master showman. But this is basically a collection of best of. There's nothing new.

Rockabilly isn't really my style and i can't extract listening to him with my general feeling that I'm not a big fan of what has been publicized about his life. Your Cheatin' Heart is the most enjoyable track here.

Album is fine but I can't help but feel dirty listening to this

Maybe I should separate the art from the artist, but I don't want to

FUCK LIVE ALBUMS

Lots of energy. Must have been the energy of youth he wqs getting out of hos 13 year old cousin.

No. Why is this on the list? He has like two songs and the rest are covers. Nothing original…. 2/5.

It’s okay, not really my type of thing though. Makes my foot shake

Lively and energetic, yet I'm still uninterested. I can see why it's on this list, but it's just not my thing. One of those albums I respect, but don't fully enjoy.

respectueusement, ca me saoule

Very simple.

I'm a bit puzzled at this - I like JLL but this 22 minute live album with mainly covers of others hits and not particularly well recorded. I've read it's supposed to be the greatest etc but I don't agree.

Just what you’d expect. Probably amazing at the time.

Cet album a été enregistré à Hambourg dans une salle de concert à quelques pas seulement du célèbre quartier rouge de la ville hanséatique. La question est maintenant de savoir ce que pouvait bien faire Robert dans les parages...

This is an album where going into it I already knew most of the songs. I can't say it did much for me. Maybe the appeal is in the nostalgia. I can't say

Solid rockabilly. Not much improv

I admit, there is a great deal of bias diverting me from having much fun with this record. If this was recorded live in West Germany in 1964 I imagine the embarrassment of the possibly stereotypical stoic and humorless Germans being confronted with a back-woods piano mashing maniac. It may be amusing to hear his antics on a studio record, but it must have been awkward seeing it in person and that audience would need to break a lot of ice. This also illustrates to me that this is on the other side of some boundary where modern rock begins and stuffy 'square' pop acts roamed the radio. To be honest, this is from my parents' teenage era, so it's inherently icky and I'm being generationally oppositional. Also to be fair, the Beatles played in the same club around that time and I would consider that era to be on the other side of 'modern.'

Ovoono, nije mi sjelo

JEDEEOOO E EGAGAGEGEG OOOO FOR THE NIGHT OBABABIBABA bar je samo 20 minuta

I do t like this type of rock music, I could not get into the songs

This guy really loves his piano, but this is incredibly distracting music. How am I supposed to get work done with this racket in the background. Really good music to annoy your friends with.

Jerry Lee Lewis was a hell of a piano player and performer, helped to transform early rock and roll, and is a total piece of crap. Some of the musicians that actually wrote these songs are probably better people and deserve more of the credit.

Heel leuke muziek. Jammer van de live uitvoering, want het klinkt (zoals ik al vaker gezegd heb) een stuk minder leuk. Ook bij deze opname klinkt de stem erg eentonig en hetzelfde. Het mist een beetje de dynamiek. **

I'm sure this would've been dynamite to see and I'm sure he influenced many many people, but he's a nonce so 2 stars

This is often cited as one of the best live albums of all time, and I can imagine the energy of being there in '64. At this point it's dated.

This is a 1964 live rock album by pianist Jerry Lee Lewis from the Star Club in Hamburg, West Germany. It's regarded as one of the best live rock album/performance, and I have to agree. It seems hard to capture a live musical act and make it sound good, but this album did just that. You feel like you are actually there in the Star Club with the crowd, enjoying the rock and roll. I can't believe this whole album came from one single night of rock and roll and sounds like it could have been made in a studio. Very well produced and I'm jealous of everyone who saw this concert live.

Another live album, Alex is on suicide watch. At least Apple Music had the decency to only have 22 minutes worth of this album for me to listen to. I call that mercy. I'm more interested in reading about Lewis' bizarre marriages than I am listening to this album. He had seven wives, some overlapping because he married before finalizing divorces. His third wife, when he was 22, was his 13 year old cousin! Who does this guy think he is? Drake? She alleged every type of abuse imaginable, and two of his wives after that died before divorces could be finalized. Long and short of it, we're dealing with a psychopath. You can hear that energy in the music. Pretty hilarious that the marriage to his cousin kneecapped his rock 'n roll career, but he thereafter found success in country music. The South is just different. Anyway, the music's as expected. Live, energized, but I won't return to much here. Favorite tracks: Great Balls of Fire, Money. Album art: It's a live photo, who cares? At least the mixture of fonts is cool. 2.5/5

Classic rock n roll - not quite sure listening to it live adds anything and will never go back. If this was a studio album it would score higher

I really prefer the doo-wop and chorus sound of the 60s rather than the boogie-woogie music of that era. This album mainly plays into that "boogie" dance sound, but it's not as interesting as other albums of that time. Granted there wasn't much innovation in this genre anyway, but the muddied words, loud crowd, and simple, overused progressions don't help. Favorite track: Your Cheating Heart

needs more B

Rock. Erinnert mich stilistisch sehr an Elvis. Kein Album was ich mir nochmal anhören würde.

overall thoughts: got a lotta energy that's for sure. songs kinda sounded very similar to each other. anywho, music ain't that terrible, just not my vibe (this sum boomer music). 2/5.

Blues rock. It was ok.

Jerry Lee Lewis has some incredible piano licks, and this essentially should be a great live rendition of his greatest hits, but the quality of the recording is scuffed enough that it detracts from the overall experience, rather than making you feel in the audience.

Really short, noice oh boy.... very 60s... what is happening.... Your Cheating Heart

Viel zu klassischer Rock n Roll nichts für mich

Well, I think I would have enjoyed this a lot more if it weren't live. Probably the studio version would have gotten 4 or 3 stars. But I don't really appreciate live recordings much. Especially if I haven't heard the studio version of (most of) the songs yet.

Mja, gelukkig duurde het maar 20 minuten.

Apple Music and Spotify only have 8 tracks

Ближе к 1

Mediocre paedo piano smashing

I’m not going to give this a 1 because whoever was at the Star Club in Hamburg Germany in 1964 probably went wild for this ... but it was not for me and didn’t enjoy how fast it all was xxx

alright i guess. can’t say i enjoyed it

This is a pretty low rating when I think about how fun this album is. There is a lot of energy and fun in this album. But it lacked discipline and was all over the place on time and what not.

Old school rock and roll, not bad by any means but a bit too dated for me.

It’s an alright performance but it’s just a bunch of covers. This is not deserving to be on the list.

1/5 - This is a straight up 1-star, because I can't stand this guy. Nothing to honor. Nothing to revere here.

Nope, can't do it - 2 tracks in, getting on my nerves! 🤣

Separating the paedo piece of shit from the music… I still don’t like this. I’m sure in the 50’ s it sounded exciting but it’s just a guy with an annoying voice banging on a piano and whooping. Obviously there are a couple of tracks that have entered into legend and it would be churlish to deny JLL was a key figure in an important moment in the evolution of rock n roll, but for someone born in the 80’s it’s rudimentary and boring 1

I was originally a bit miffed on behalf of the audience if they’d paid for a gig that was so short. Then I remembered that there were so many more important reasons to be miffed about Jerry. What an A Grade ass hole.

Reminds me of that Kyle Gordon sketch about 50s / 60s music

Tight but 1 star as an absolute wrong un

I didn't need this in my life. Done better by Little Richard.

Nope, not my thing at all. Most nonsensical lyrics I've ever heard and the structure of every song is the same. There was some intrigue with 'Money' but it died quick. Would've love if the guitar was louder in the mix but 1960s technology ain't that great. Just read some reviews and apparently he's a pedophile, racist, and murderer. Man spent more time being a shitty person than trying to make good music. -5/5

Fuck the pedo, Rest in piss.

I don’t listen to pedos.

I doubt that anyone under the age of 70 actually likes this

April Fool! I'm listening to Little Richard instead.

Lord no. I'm familiar with his work and I have never cared for it. He was a racist and a pedophile. I'd give him a -10 if I could.

dirty incestuous nonce

Good music, kinda generic rockabilly, all songs sound the same, piece of shit human, rating will reflect that

I stopped listening to my daily album from this project because it made me listen to Nas lol. but I decided I had to come back. So then it gave me this. Seriously wtf is this.

I rarely like live albums, and I never liked Jerry Lee Lewis. Why? Because he was a piece of shit. And I really think that he did the same rock n roll thing everyone did back then but worse. This guy just wanted to copy Little Richard as far as I'm concerned. I enjoy Little Richard a lot, Jerry Lee not so much.

Didn't like the first song, read the Wiki page, fuck this guy...

Enjoyed it until I read all the reviews Music/performance is a 5 but I’m only giving it 1 as he shouldn’t be anywhere near the top of top of the chart. Also agree wirh whoever said all albums should be 22 mins long

Not On Normal Courtyard Exercise

It’s almost a shame that Live at the Star Club, Hamburg is barely over half an hour long because purely as a live document, it’s explosive. Jerry Lee Lewis was many things, and most of them deeply problematic, but on stage he was undeniable. But here’s the problem: separating the art from the artist isn’t easy and in this case, it’s almost impossible. Lewis’s personal history casts a very long shadow, and for me it overshadows whatever brilliance is captured on this recording. Yes, he could perform. Yes, this is raw rock ’n’ roll at full throttle. But knowing who he was makes it hard to enjoy without discomfort. So while I can recognise the musical impact, it’s not something I’ll return to.

bara en massa jävla gapande, samma blues ackord om och om igen

Haha wow what a piece of shit this guy was! And even judging this musically, I got tired of his voice after a while. The energy is cool, especially for the time, but if you're always dialed up to 11, it just loses its impact. I was going to give this two stars, but I felt so relieved when it was over, I've gotta give it a one instead.

Not really my type of music. I can see though that people that enjoy this type find this live version also good.

The fact that he dated his 13 year old cousin really ruined it for me, along with the first song being about dancing at a high school when he was like 30

POS human, but he could rock. Can live with out him as other played these tunes for us.

Skíthæll. Þetta var líka ekki einusinni það gott. Setti aftur á móti á gamla tónleika með Lil' Richard eftir þetta. Sá gaur kunni að rokka.

I understand the historical significance but this was a tough listen. I expect this was a thrilling show to experience live, but it does not hit right as a recording. “The same note over and over” ≠ energy and excitement for me. Lyrics difficult to understand. Manic.

Would really be like a 2-3 brought down due to the racism and other stuff

I hope you are burning in hell jerry lee lewis fuck you

124/1089 at least it was short… i just have no interest in this style of music, he has charisma, some of these songs are very recognisable but i’m not sure i “needed” to listen to this one not to mention the kind of guy he was… 9/100

I’ve enjoyed my previous live oldies … this one disappointed however

Immediately clocked this guy as some sort of weird pedo before I listened or knew anything about him. And I was right so I will not be entertaining this

1 and a bit ,

I hated listening to this. Yeah, yeah, it's important, and I don't begrudge its being on this list. And I don't always have a problem respecting the art when I cannot respect the artist. I gave 5 stars to a Kanye album. But somewhere between "Humpin' at the Middle School Hop" and "Goodness Gracious, Girls Lick My Balls," I just couldn't...

I'm not normally one to give an album a low rating just because the artist is a bad person, like I wouldn't give MJ or Kanye West a 1 because of their respective atrocities, purely because in their cases it doesn't affect the music. But in this case, it most definitely does. I can't deny that this guy has amazing stage presence, but the audacity for this racist motherfucker to claim that rock n roll barely existed before him is ridiculous. Rock n roll is a genre that was built by black people, and his music rips all all the same black people he claims have no importance to music history. I can't in good conscience give this album any other rating, and honestly even though the fact that he was an incestuous pedophile doesn't affect the music at all, it's just the cherry on top of how awful of a person he was.

It´s all been said

If this is a reflection of the albums to come, its fair to say ive already done all the classics and I'm left with the dregs. Its live, its boring, I don't have time to listen to this garbage, but I did Waste of time

He’s a sex pest

This racist creep really hammered the shit out of that piano. But...racist creep. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): N/A ⭐: Hated it.

Not anything special

guys a creep and just didn't enjoy the live recording of this for some reason. Im a hater sue me!

Some vanilla ass rock

One of those people I know the name of but wouldn't be able to tell you one song by them. Genuinely knew nothing about the guy so I looked at the reviews and his Wikipedia page and hoo boy did I learn a lot. Well he seems to be shitty at music too because he managed to make every single song sound exactly the same: boring 1/5

I hate this guys schtick

Nope, not giving a pedo anymore than one star. I couldn’t give two tosses how good they are.

I think I’m good on Jerry. Not my mind if style.

Var säkert nyskapande på sin tid men tycker inte det finns nåt alls i detta.

Best thing about this album was it was short. Crappy covers mixed with a few mediocre hits performed live just ain’t doing it for me.

bla bla nem dá para gastar palavras com a música, o cantor e todas as coisas que ele fez. O álbum é ruim também, ele não se esforça nem para cantar. E ainda se acha. Enfim, blabla.

That guy married a little girl. Too weird.

po perai o cara casou com a prima de 13 anos? puta merda

Do you ever just listen to the voice of an early rock and roll star and just know in your heart that they had a deeply problematic relationship with one or more teenage girls?

Musically sure OK rock n roll is cool but "1" is reserved for "should not be on this list" and after googling this dude I am happy to report I am awarding him a grand total of 1. And he didn't even write most of these!

Jerry Lee Lewis is a figure surrounded by controversy, known for his racist views and inappropriate pseudo-pedo marriage to his 13-year-old first cousin (and alleged murder of one of his other wives). Generally speaking, he is/was a terrible human being. "Live At The Star Club, Hamburg" features a blend of original songs and covers, opening with "High School Confidential," which seems creepy in hindsight. The recording quality is somewhat rough sounding, which might be expected for a live performance from 1964. Despite the album's energetic vibe and Lewis' bravado and showmanship, I still felt a sense of revulsion towards this man while listening. Thankfully, the entire album is a brief 22 minutes. As a personal preference, I would choose Little Richard, a more accomplished and influential artist, over Lewis.

Way overrated

Ah this racist pedophile pops up on my 1001 albums challenge. This entire album just shows how much this douchebag stole from Little Richard and did it so much worse. Thank goodness it only wasted 22 minutes of my time, because I was ready to hit stop by that point.

I don’t much care for pedos.

his long tall sally is miserable

A live album is certainly a choice. Not a good one, mind you. But a choice for sure. I'm not against live albums in general. There are some great ones (looking at you Stop Making Sense) but I'd never put that over a full Talking Heads album. And this isn't even a good live album. It is short though.

A lot of people are rating this lower on account of how shitty JLL was as a person. The crazy thing is, this music sucks great balls of fire on it's own. The person singing and performing this music could be a saint and I still would think this blows. Vapid and without soul. Just how I like my blues inspired rock and roll.

While I'm sure groundbreaking in its time, this album didn't really do it for me. :)

Brilliant stuff, but its JLL.

this is a banger. he's a rapist pedophile. both things can be true, but one trumps the other. more like jerry lee SPEW-is

i did not like this at all, also the guy married his 13 year old cousin

forgot to rate this one when i listened — fuck a live albums forever

2/10 I hate live albums, I hate Jerry Lee Lewis, I like the set list. 1-6-2025

Boring

Complete nonsense

"Open up, a-honey, it's your lover boy me that's a-knockin" hits a little different when you find out he wrote it at the age of 23 and married his 13-year-old cousin. Nothing special about this record in the slightest..

I try reserve 1s for the albums that feel offensive to my ears, albums with no discernible redeeming qualities. I know these songs, they are fine songs— but I am utterly confused as to why this live performance on particular needed to be here. So confused that I can’t bring myself to give it two stars.

Not for me. 1/5

Never a fan - some of these songs have been played by people far better than Paedo Jerry !

Pedo pish

I've never liked most first-wave rock 'n' roll because it's monotonous. I've never liked Jerry Lee Lewis because he's a racist, incestuous pedophile. I've never liked live albums, as a rule, because they sound like shit. In all, I won't bother with this one.

Good player. Historically important. Shit human.

Gets a 1 for being a horrible human being, can't seem to separate that from the good musician

Pretty annoying and devoid of anything that particularly interests me.

Not a fan of live music albums

Dude was a perv

Livealbum, sjøl om da e kult at da e fra Hamburg

goodness gracious, great load of shite

Something quite fitting about a crowd chanting "JERRY, JERRY, JERRY" at a fella who married his 13 year old cousin. Anyway, this is crap

This is #day21 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... discovering a record released 60 years ago and learning about the Star Club and its history is great. Yes, it's a wild live album, full of energy, presence, and all that. But... it leaves a bitter taste when you dig deeper. Why does a panel of music critics that compiled this list tolerate moral degenerates? This isn't the first time. For this reason, I'm giving it a 1 out of 5. Looking forward to #day22.

For me personally, I really only like to listen to live albums when I go into it knowing I like the artists music, I also never know how to rate live albums because I’m sure this guy has decent songs, I just didn’t like the live versions of it all. Wanted to like it more but honestly didn’t, this was like my 5th live album that I didn’t really enjoy much so I’m a bit more excited for the first live album I do like

For me, its usually very important to separate the artist from the art. But in this case, its OK because the album was a piece of shit too.

I put on the first track and went to wikipedia because I didn't really know who this guy was - he married and beat 5 women, one of whom was his 13 year old cousin, 2 who ended up mysteriously dead around the time they left him. I'm not giving another listen or cent to the estate or legacy of this noncing prick. Zero stars

this album asks the question: how much can the white man pass off as his own? besides that, the quality of his vocal performance and overall musical backdrop to that too, is so unbelievably mid and i can't begin to understand why a live album of this quality takes place on this list fuck this guy 1/5

What a sack of shit

Just a load of repetitive noise from a piano-bashing nonce.

Very annoying.

High energy, lots of bravado, and tons of piano key banging. Also a pedophile. 1/5

Dude could bang out some rockers, sure. But live albums are pointless

He's a whiz on the piano, there's no doubt about it, but he sings with the nuance of a dump truck navigating speed bumps. No matter the song, he sings it the same, and usually with the same narcissistic flair. I'm adding a star for the album being only 22 minutes long, but removing two for almost certainly killing at least a couple of his 7 wives. If we start talking about his marriage to his 13 year old cousin, we're going to need negative stars and an extra layer of hell.

Incredible live album from one of the worst guys who ever lived! Just a truly terrible man! 0/5 person! Do not need to be reminded that he once lived and died, before I died!

This one was a ndf for me. I just can’t stand this type of music. Got like 2 tracks in.

He married his 13 year old second cousin

Wasn’t that into this but I get why it’s important for the history of music!

it’s ok but jerry is not ok

Lol imagine becoming a jerry Lee Lewis mega fan in 2024. Not happening.

I have a hard time listening to him based on his personal issues...I know that's not relevant to the music..but...

I am not into live albums

Jerry Lee Lewis was a racist, predatory, cousin-fucking pedo and for that he gets a 1

Eh, whatever. I guess this is important and foundational and all, but it's not interesting at all to me now.

When do you separate the art from the artist? For me I think it's when the art is not something you're willing to lose and the art itself is not an extention of the toxic behaviors. Here we have the racist pedophile singing songs stolen from black artists with the smug satisfaction of knowing he'll always make more than them. Jerry Lee Lewis reminds me of the kind of asshole that would go to an open mic just to mock young artists. I don't care how well he performs. Give me James Brown and Little Richard please.

This is 22 minutes of the 12 bar blues and other people’s songs. Jerry Lee Lewis was also a piece of shit. Fuck this guy and fuck this album

this shits ass and he likes 13 year old children

The music is ass but everything else about him is really funny

Apparently he was a freak pedophile soooooo

I tried, but there's no way I could stomach this entire album. Jerry Lee Lewis is just too fucking creepy. He kicks off the set with "Mean Woman Blues" where he sings, "She's got ruby lips, shapely hips" and you immediately call BULLSHIT! "Nice try, Jerry Boy, but we all know that shapely women are NOT your type, mate." But then, disgustingly, he follows this with a track called "High School Confidential". HIGH. SCHOOL. CONFIDENTIAL. Yikes. Ew. Gross. Yuck. 🤢🤮 I switched this weirdo off during that song. On this occasion, it was simply impossible to enjoy the art separate from the artist. Fuck Jerry Lee Lewis. 👎👎

Ok. Expected more though.

This one is not for me. Not my era, not my style of music or vocals, and especially not a live set. If someone wants to tell me what a heathen I am, fine, do it. But I'm not listening to this whole thing just to say I did it.

Not a fan of pedophiles

terash

Let's get this out of the way. Fuck Jerry Lee Lewis. I can't believe that guy even had a career after people found out that he MARRIED HIS 13 YEAR OLD COUSIN. Anyway, this album isn't even that great to begin with. There really isn't much to this album. It's a live album, something that I believe I've only experienced once all the way back with that Johnny Cash album I did a while ago. That one was alright, not necessarily because it wasn't made by a pedophile, but because it had something special with its energy. Johnny's interactions with the crowd made it feel special, especially given the context. This album just kind of has cheering from the crowd and that's about it. The music itself is decent as far as sound. It's passable 50s/early 60s rock and roll, but it's not original at all. Jerry Lee Lewis only wrote two of the thirteen tracks off of the album. I know that that was kind of the norm at the time, but that still doesn't sit right with me, especially since he was also racist and most of these songs were originally written by black artists. Okay then, I could try to separate the art from the artist! The problem with that is how much he name drops himself. One of the two songs that he wrote was called "Lewis Boogie". So apparently, he's also a narcissist! On top of that, most of the songs are about love and stuff, so it's even harder to get that knowledge out of your head when you know that the song could've been written about a 13 year old. Overall, even if I could separate art from the artist, the content's of the album are not only negatively affected by the knowledge of what the singer did, but also aren't original or spectacular enough to warrant listening to this ever again! 1/5. Rest in piss Jerry, you piece of shit.

Dude had more wives than songs on this album

Pedophile

every song sounds the same, its mostly the piano carrying and repeating the song title 50 times

So this is what cultural appropriation sounds like…check I’m looking at you Jack Harlow 😉 Although he’s from Louisiana … he also married his 13 yo cousin. I guess someone had to do it (not the pedo incest stuff) but to be the poster boy for the style lifting from the disenfranchised black south… Elvis too. Now that you know he’s a pedo, his songs def have a sinister undertone, right? Ugh 😣 that guttural cat call is the definition of CRINGE Thank god this album is only 20 minutes long 1 star because he said something cool about New Orleans otherwise he would’ve gotten 0 Maybe I’m acting too woke? I dunno. This album was cringy af. I’m glad that ride is over. But I guess I’ll say something positive …. He broke the cultural barrier making it cool for white kids to openly listen to black music…. But does music truly have a color? But he’s still an incestuous pedo

Terrible.

Ugh, this mother fucker.

I can normally separate the art from the artist. It's something I rarely have an issue with. Jerry Lee Lewis is an issue. I don't care how bombastic the performances are, how wild the crowd is cheering, or how iconic the melodies are. Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13-year old first cousin's daughter. Twice! And big surprise, she was "subject to every type of physical and mental abuse imaginable". That's just one (major) bullet point in the list of reasons why JLL was a piece of sub-human scum. This album came out over 6 years after their marriage was public. The fact that he even had an audience to record this in front of is digesting.

Bullshit.

Billy's gonna rock.

If you don’t have a problem with pedophiles…

- Great Balls of Fire

I'm not feeling like rating this piece of shit's album.

Talented for sure. Also a monster.

I really hate this genre. He can play but I hate it anyway.

I'm just not the kind of person who can say "Well, he might have been a racist, incestuous pedophile who abused people, but he sure made great music!"

Livealbum, sjøl om da e kult at da e fra Hamburg

Though I'm only familiar with the same song everyone else is familiar with, I knew more of these songs than I thought...because they were sung better by others ('Long Tall Sally' and Little Richard, 'Money' and just about everyone else.) Even if I could get past what I knew of Lewis as a human, this still mostly sounded like someone who couldn't sing very well going to town on a piano.

I'm sure this was very influential when it came out, but it didn't age well. The standard blues chord progression gets tiring very fast.

No thanks. Stay away, creepy teenage cousin marrying pedophile.

It’s not my kind of music. I really didn’t enjoy it.

This sucks and i hate it Also why is anybody saying this guy invented punk right here first of all i fail to see anything here that could be influential to punk and if there was he would be far from the first Racist pedophile piece of shit

boring as shit and he's a nonce and about 5 of his 7 wives died on "accident"

Kan niet.

can barely understand a fucking word he says. basically he just copied what everyone else was doing at the time and rode the coattails of his contemporaries. he’s a watered down Little Richard wannabe. like if i want to listen to generic 50’s rock i’m gonna listen to the guy that fucking invented it, Little Richard. oh and he’s a pedo. go fuck yourself Jerry Lee Lewis you’re not special you just got lucky.

the energy on this album! jerry lee lewis brought so much excitement to the stage, and it's evident through this recording. i mean, multiple times the crowd chants his name! i can understand why this live album made the list. lewis' piano playing remains unique to this day, and it's a big part of the energy captured here. i think lewis' notable "great balls of fire" showcases that--but also his original "lewis' boogie," a charming song. also, today i learned what a huge racist and asshole lewis was! hope you rot. he could've gotten a 3 or 4 from me, but he's stuck at a 1 now. i have no remorse.

The only thing I will say about this artist or album is that other artists have recorded great covers of some of these songs.

Full of energy, sounds like a fun concert. But that doesn’t excuse JLL being a racist pedophile, I can’t see past that.

I found this too much but the reviews made me go and look him up. Dear god, what a delightful chap 😳

The first song was just noise, and then after he butchered money (that's what i want) i had to sack it off. Sounded like a good time in Hamburg though, cool place.

Wild man. Married a Child. Played big Rock'n'Roll piano. Alway hated it .

Not a fun of Live Music

I haven’t heard much by Jerry Lee Lewis as far as I’m aware. I did used to like Great Balls Of Fire as a child, but I think that may have been because I found the word “balls” funny. Songs I already knew: Great Balls Of Fire Favourites: Great Balls Of Fire I’m very surprised that this album is considered to be essential enough to be in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. There are 8 songs on the album, and I counted 6 of them to be 12-bar blues, basically meaning the music was the exact same, just maybe in a different key off at a different tempo. As much as I may have enjoyed Great Balls Of Fire in my youth, I would say this song makes it worth buying this album, and the rest of the songs certainly don’t either. Overall, it feels Mosul like listening to the same song over and over, so I simply don’t get the speak of this.

Jag tror att Jerry Lee Lewis är en riktigt dålig artist, han spelar inte alls bra på sin gitarr och hans sång är inte alls artig.

All his songs are stolen from better artists and he is a paedo

There's no Jerry Lee Lewis with Little Richard.

obnoxious. also every song is the same

Live album
