Reviews (page 4 of 13)

I’ve mentioned before in my reviews that I’m usually not that into late-80s rap, as it can often feel like an awkward developmental period when the genre was still moving toward the more refined sound and stronger lyricism of the 90s. Run-D.M.C. ticks many of the boxes of 80s rap that I usually don’t like, but there’s something so unbelievably 80s about it that, paradoxically, I find endearing. It’s just a lot of fun to listen to.

Pretty good for early hip hop very catchy. Good shit on it

It has the hits there is no doubt. But it does sound very 80s like. Still a classic!

RATING: 8/10 HIGHLIGHT: It’s Tricky LOWLIGHT: Dum Dum

Hip-hop, rap rock.

Yessir.

I loved this album when it came out, but it got over shadowed pretty quickly by newer artists whose delivery was a little smoother and conversational, eg. Rakim. Still, it is an incredibly important record that those later artists stood on the shoulders of to make ‘better’ records afterward.

Callie is apparently a huge fan of Run-DMC. Dancing to the beat and having a great time. Was a fun Saturday morning album to get going for the day. I have always enjoyed their music. But have never really sought out their music to listen to it.

Bonus points for the rock/rap songs, those were definitely the highlights. The fact that Run-D.M.C. got Aerosmith to feature on one of the songs is kinda mind blowing, the 2 styles meshed sooooo well. I like Run's style, but it kinda gets a bit stale after a while with the way they rap, not much variation in their delivery, but in bite sized pieces they are really fun to listen to. As an album though, not sure they amount to some of the other hip hop & rap albums on this list. 7.5/10

I think I prefer the rap of this era: mid-80s to early 90s. The rock flavor that they bring is great.

I’ve never actively listened to Run DMC but this was really fun. Shortly after the first track kicked in I can already spot where this has been sampled, which I love to do. I look forward to listening to more of their records and this is definitely a must listen for music historians!

This is a bit difficult. All 80s rap sounds dated and campy to some extent. The first 4 tracks are great up to Walk This Way (which is incredible, although I think that's more because of Joe Perry than Run-DMC). After that, it's dated 80s hip hop, a couple of tracks are ok, most are not. 3.5, and I'll round it up because of nostalgia.

Just a classic album. Really love that electro feel hip-hop from back in the days. And probably also the first hip-hop group (together with Beastie Boys) that combined hip-hop with rock. Well thanks to Rick Rubin I suppose. 4/5

God damn that DJ made my day. Jam Master Jay was so talented and laid the perfect sounds down for Run and DMC to do their thing. This album is so fun and infectious it's no wonder it was as huge and influential as it was. I'd heard most of it over the years but putting it all in one place really emphasizes it all. It's Tricky into My Adidas into Walk This Way is an insane run. Wonder if they weren't listening to some go-go out of DC when they put together the groove for Is It Live. I realized by the title track that they kinda invented nu metal too.

Starts strong. Gets a bit long. 4 stars

“Now Peter Piper picked peppers, but Run rocked rhymes. Humpty Dumpty fell down, that's his hard time. Jack B. Nimble was nimble and he was quick, but Jam Master cut faster…” -one of the Golden Age of Hip Hop’s standout gems!

B-side was a drag but that A-side, oh man. Some fine hiphop.

Just plain fun. The side A is damn near flawless, but "Dumb Girl" was less than sub par for me, so I think we sit at a solid 4 stars.

One of the most iconic rap albums of the 80s

A tried and tested old skool formula which I will always like

The eighties have never sounded so fresh.

they could've said "skibidi toilet" in this album and I wouldnt have thought it odd.

Hip hop is usually not my genre, mostly because the instrumentals tend to get on my nerves pretty quickly, but this album worked much better for me than expected and I would gladly come back to it. ++ : It's Tricky Walk This Way Hit It Run

Solid album likely laid foundations for modern rap. Liked that they were bouncing off guitar and other samples and had more classic rock elements to some songs something rarely seen today.

initial impression - okaaayyyy 1 - i like the dings 2 - ohh this song 4 - HELLO? aerosmith?? lmao i love the mv’s battle/vs concept final - its not a bad album. i should listen to more hiphop lol favorite song - peter piper or walk this way

Should be required listening for anyone living in New York City.

w very old school hip hop sometimes the lyrics were kinda corny but def fun listen

Ofc one of the first hip hop album is good, the sample, the rhyme and the Mc

Hip hop. Mi mero mole, hay una canción del álbum que se hizo famosa por tiktok, gran álbum, lo volvería a escuchar

A great hip-hop album!

Iconic!

I went expecting great things, and left very satisfied. You got classics like It's Tricky and Walk This Way, deeper cuts like Is It Live and Hit It Run, all making up some exquisite classic Rock-Rap. One thing I love that this album does are the swapping lines where the MC's bounce the sentence back and forth creating an original effect to enhance the genre. The sonics on this album are also criminally underrated. Prominent in the drums, the sound the record achieves is great. The transition from Adidas to WTW is also one of the slickest things I've ever heard. There are definitely points in the album where the tracks run longer than they need to and tend to be a little empty at times, but it's still an absolute classic that I have no problem throwing on.

Beastie boys of colour

Never listened something like this before. Some good hits. solid 7

Classic! Great album, raw-sounding and good fun.

Better than Coldplay

For the OG uncs. Cheesy now, but respect the historical significance.

A classic album for hip hop and absolutely understand its place on this list after listening. Rating: 8/10 Favorite Song(s): Is it live, walk this way

Классика, даже дедушка современного хип хопа. Но из запоминающихся треков 3-4

The vocal intercourse between members is like listening to a Wimbledon tennis match, batting lyrics back and forth with such gusto and precision that you could almost believe it was a one-man-band. The production on this record is air-tight, so crisp and so fresh.

The founding fathers of my art form. What caught me off guard are the guitar samples and used in the songs. The drums plus guitar combo is too clean. Since the voice is amazing but sounds super old-school it made me smile, but sometimes the lyrics kept me from feeling it really much.

I owned this album for years and rarely listened to the back half on account of all the hits being front-loaded. Looking back I can see why that was - there's a tough little mid-album lull, and the hits are all hits for a reason ("It's Tricky" in particular is a propulsive classic). But the whole package is worthy, especially once your ear (if it's like mine) gets onto the spare, patient wavelength of Jam Master Jay's minimalist beats and Rick Rubin's patient production. Justly regarded as a landmark for the genre; "Walk This Way" gets all the love but for my money the title track is an equally good fusion of genres.

Dope album can’t go wrong with DMC. Maybe the epitome of an album that was ahead of its time. Favorite track: Peter Piper

pretty chill

Decent Album - Good hits 7/10

didn’t expect to like it, but apparently i did. would recommend it to my friends. hype

Great record. It's a couple of classics that still hold up well today. Favourite Track(s): It's Tricky, Walk This Way Least Favourite Track(s): Perfection

1. peter piper 2. my adidas 3. tricky hm: you be illin', raising hell, proud to be black

Kind of hard to rate this one. I still enjoy the hits, but these old 80’s raps, though foundationally important, can come off a bit corny. 3.5⭐️ rounding up

Get's a little "rip rap rippidy-doo" at points, but a ton of bangers on here. 'Peter Piper', 'It's Tricky', 'My Adidas', 'Walk This Way" is a fucking murderer's row to start this album....loses some steam, natch.... but still holds up! 4.5

Amazing old school Rap defining genre album

Gillar ju inte hiphop men fattar varför detta är en klassiker. Fantastiska samplingar, påhittigt och med flow. En fyra

Omg that was funn .it's trickyyyyy

Yet another relic of my youth. Excellent.

This was the album that pretty much brought Run-DMC into the public eye, but what a genre breaking album. Solid must listen to.

Some absolute classics that brought me back to my youth. There was a big revival of some of these songs in the late 90s, and it was great to go through them again

J’ai trop aimé C’est plus rythmé qu’à tribe called quest, 4 étoiles C’est un album parfait pour s’épiler l’intégralité du corps

Hell yea dude, infectious shit. Also didn't this make Rick Rubin as a producer?

A foundational 80s rap album filled with catchy hits that are true classics. Tricky, My Adidas, Walk This Way… I can still remember the SNL performance with Aerosmith! I’d give this a 5, but it has aged a bit. The beats feel a bit rudimentary listening with a modern ear. And after the blistering start to the record, it peters out just a little. But it’s still awesome and important.

Some outdated beats, but c'mon this has "It's Tricky" and "Walk This Way". Those alone make this a classic.

first 4 songs are absolute classics. Ive heard of run but never listed and so far it sounds like better beastie boys super funky too Definitely slowed down and got a tiny bit repetitive near the end but its for sure a classic and it will get a 4

HipHop heritage

mooy bueno che

Does it sound a little dated? Of course…but did it break wide open hip hop and rock…bring it to white mass public plus hit perfect the backbone of breakbeats. Absolutely- still fun even if a bit dated. It also doesn’t take itself to seriously.

One of the groups that unlocked hip-hop. The songs are infectious and fun.

Better than I expected, but not as polished and easy to listen to as I want and hope out of rap and hip/hop. Surprisingly commercial?

Classic! It's a hell of a 4 track start of the album. The rest unfortunately runs pretty meh. Still, I definitely blasted this as I drove around town.

it’s tricky!

Classic 80’s rap with some rock. That was apparently unheard of for the time.

I was expecting for this to lag and sound as same-y as The Beastie Boys, but it actually held me until the end--although the Dumb Girl song is yikes. Great MC work here in the old school style and nice storytelling and humor. Kind of hitting a 3.5 for me, but bumping as I'd spin again for sure.

Throwback, great album to start with bc I usually wouldn’t choose it

loved it, I don't normally listen to hip-hop but I didn't mind it

Overall great, recognized a couple songs so felt nostalgic

Great Album

HIP HOP: LA DEFINICIÓN

iconic album from my favorite era of hip hop

not my taste but that was pretty good

It's a classic and its influence can't be overstated. It is a product of its time and that's the only reason it's a 4/5 for me. Rap had evolved so much after this, but it would never have evolved had it not been for this album.

What an impressive album, and not just because it immediately followed Ice Cube's "The Predator". While I hadn't actually heard about half of this album before, the entire album hits hard and relentlessly--it's easy to see why this is the definitive old-school-hip-hop album. A few tracks sound somewhat dated (like "Perfection" or "Hit it run"), but whenever they inject the guitars and samples it's remarkable how *un*-dated a lot of the album sounds. And of course the mind-blowing "Walk this way" (with a great video) catapulted them into the stratosphere; I can still remember hearing that song on a high school bus and wondering who that was. I also really liked the (new to me) tracks "Peter piper" and James-Brown-homage "Proud to be black".

Knew a couple songs, pretty solid album fav- It's tricky

seminal

Complete 180 from the previous albums I was given to rate. I really do love old school hip-hop. Its so funky and I have completely been sleepin on it. Rating: 4.5/5 Favourite song(s): It’s Tricky, Walk This Way (ft. Aerosmith)

Great album I purchased when I was 13. I relistened and liked it but mostly the songs that were not as popular. I appreciate rev’s voice, just incredible.

Wow, what an opening four tracks - all killer no filler as the kids would say - with Peter Piper, It's Tricky, My Adidas, and Walk this Way. Album can't help but drag a bit after that and mid 80's hip hop, while ahead of it's time then, does sound a little bit dated. Still worth 4 out of 5 stars for that start.

So good

Really creative sampling here with all of the 70s rock tracks used, and just off this album I can see why 808 beats are a backbone of hip-hop for a reason. 8.5/10.

8.5/10 I enjoyed all the songs but the singles, especially It's Tricky and Walk This Way, are on another level.

Snazzy beats

"Peter Parker" has that classic percussion loop sample with the xylophone. The "there it is" line has been sampled many times. "It's Tricky" is a stone-cold jam. "My Adidas" forces you to remember that Adidas used to be the predominant street-wear brand before Nike. Break out the shelltoes. We all know the "Walk This Way" crossover. Worryingly, maybe one of the most important crossover records ever. Middle tracks lull a bit. Title track raises the energy. It is a another rock-tinged piece. "You Be Illin'" is a funky joint compared to the other tracks.

Top 3: Walk This Way, Hit It Run, Peter Piper

Cool album. Seems like the source of all those rap parody

Very fun, those first four songs are an incredible stretch. Got a bit samey as the album went on.

Legendary, innovative, influential, and most of all, a lot of fun. Today was my first listen in a few years and it still kicks. Obviously it’s dated and the quality drops off on side two, but the appeal and likability of these 3 remains strong. I still question many of the hip-hop in the 1001 but certainly not this one. Respect to Run, DMC & JMJ.

So good, classic rap that has all the good (great beats, cool rhymes) and none of the bad

While dripping with an inescapable 80s hip hop rap vibe, this album opens with, and carries five star energy through the turn. Sure, the second half lacks the luster of the first, but there’s no denying what these guys brought to the table at the time. And in the end, this still slaps hard.

It's a pretty good, fun listen. A very listenable album. Has some big hits. I particularly enjoy the tracks with hard rock influences which isn't very common in rap nowadays. Party vibe. A lot of cool lyrics and a good mix of silly and important subject matter. Only criticism is that, while the backing tracks and lyrics change with each song, their flow and style of rapping stays the exact same which makes the tracks sound interchangeable. I guess that's just a sign of the time period where rap was still new and they didn't have a lot of diversity in style yet. Still good though.

Pretty good album. I am not sure if I would revisit it often simply because I don't reach for old boom bap as often as I should. However, I learned a lot about the group as a whole and their influence on and in hip hop. Their fusion of rap and rock reminded me of Don Toliver's recent 2 albums. I enjoy it. For some reason though, I started thinking of the Beastie Boys while listening and managed to listen to 2 of their albums after this one hehe. For my personal taste... unfortunately 4/10. However, for influence... 10/10.

I haven't yet given a bad rating to a project Rick Rubin has been involved in. This album is great, even though the hiphop feels dated, there are many timeless songs here that are fun to listen. The main holdback from giving this a 5 is that there are also a significant number of fillers.

Fun fun fun

Raising Hell is a classic for a reason. Un album pionero para el hip-hop, y muy interesante cuanto ha cambiado el sonido en tantos años. Las primeras cuatro canciones fueron un run super fuerte para empezar pero el resto del album kind of blended into itself 4/5

Solid as hell man. So close to giving this a 5 but by the end it starts to blend together just a little bit. Super important album in the history of hip-hop and one that still sounds damn good all these years later. Even if it's just slightly on the simpler side, it's a genius record and a great listen.

3,8/5 Batidas incríveis e faixas clássicas.

A couple of classics on here, very representative of early hip-hop.

I know someone with an SSX Tricky tattoo who might appreciate this one. Not the most melodic and usually a little goofy (the shameless plugs for Adidas and KFC were hilarious), I still love 80's rap. It's just super fun and the lyrics are fantastic.

I sort of knew I liked Run-D.M.C. but this album was a surprise to listem to. Had a great time.

This was a fun listen. I can see how bands like the beastie boys were influenced by run dmc. The title track actually slaps hard, weird that it’s not as well known as tricky, or walk this way

This was good and much better than their debut album I already listened to on the list. Walk This Way is obviously a classic tune - Run DMC were doing a rock and rap mashup decades before Linkin Park Think it's 4* not 5 because the second half is not quite as strong as the first

Rock and hop

Un clásico del hip hop con varios temas atemporales, super disfrutable, creo que 1001albumsgenerator empieza a saber de que pie cojeo. Está claro que Run-DMC influenció a todo lo que vino después en el mundo del rap

Really enjoyed it. I generally like my rap family friendly with low swears or racial epithets and not so much about Ice cubes dick. This delivers with a killer opening 4 tracks. It gets a little repetitive thereafter and could do with a little bit magic to funk it up a bit.

first half full of bangers

8.5 very good hip hop/rap vibes

Straight banger. Another album I had never listened to, but found some quality tracks. Also, it lead to a great Spotify playlist...

Positive Überraschung abseits der eh starken Hits. Das war auch auf Albumlänge catchy und kurzweilig. Nur ganz am Ende flacht es ab. Trotzdem reicht es noch für schwache 4 Sterne.

I thought it was cool seeing the fusion of rock and hip-hop. Something about this album felt very approachable, and relatable. Nothing too over the top. I also didn't know that tricky was on this album. A true classic.

Verdaderos himnos del rap

I have tried multiple times to get into Run-D.M.C. and still haven't been successful, but you cannot deny their legacy.

Amazing, I had a lot of fun with this one. One hard skip (Dumb Girl) but overall fun. Certainly hear its age in the drum machine though.

classic!

One day at work I discovered a video of trichomoniasis under a microscope vibrating to the song Tricky on YouTube. Unfortunately the video no longer exists but in my head. It made me start to really appreciate the song. Anyway, this style hip hop is interesting because it's like straight percussion.

This album is fun & iconic. Not gonna play it often, but will always enjoy it when I do!

Very fun beats , reminds me of dance mixed with rocking roll, old school hip hop what a treat

3.5 stars Listening to this makes it so clear where Beastie Boys got their whole thing from. Run DMC is less obnoxious and are more authentic, so it’s a better listening experience. I’ll admit that I’m not a big fan of the “Walk This Way” song, so this album being up there for me with that being the most well known song from it means it’s pretty good. It’s short and no skits or interludes, so it’s fun and easy to listen to.

Yeah!!!!!

Great album. I appreciate how much influence it had on the Beastie Boys. On the flipside, I have a strange relationship with rap rock (see: ICP). Also Walk this Way is far better here, fuck Aerosmith.

Classic. Absolute banging introduction to an album and the hits keep on coming. I'm constantly in awe of the early influence and DNA of Rick Rubin in both hip hop and metal. The guy has left an indelible mark on the face of music.

This was a great hip hop album in the sea of so much 70s rock I have listened to in this project. You can't really deny how big this album was for hip hop in culture, Walk This Way made it mainstream like never before. And blended rock and rap. Fun, old school, classic hip hop. I love the singles, but Raising Hell was a surprise on the back half.

Good album with both hits and other good listens.

Verrry refreshing album. Nice to have an album that’s not folk or whatever the fuck those other albums were.

This is early hip-hop, before Rakim invented flow, and before they really used samples. I really liked the rock influence and how they used that for music. Definitely a fun listen.

Turned it on and thought this sounds just like the Beastie Boys but gentler. So then my mind thought who came first...helping me decide how to understand the context of musical importance. I found out DMC mentored and was good friends with the Beastie Boys (who started out as a punk band, so the harder makes sense). So back to this album....they revived Aerosmith, introducing them to a new generation, do some sick back and forth rapping, created a musical style that was copied (sincerest form of flattery), and basically created one of the largest record labels. It does get a little samesy over and over, but no doubt this album changed music. I also like that they do it all without constantly cussing, degrading women, or only focusing on how amazing they are.

These guys really knew how to market themselves with rockstars on their tracks and Penn and Teller in their music videos. I guess it's a bit cynical to say "how can we make rap more accessible to white people - I know! Let's team up with a rock producer and add guitars", but it works for me. These songs are boppers, classic old school hip-hop.

Klasika jedna lagana, da nije bilo ovog, chocolate starfish and the hot dog flavored water ne bi postojao...... Ocena za ovaj album 3,75/5

Good, this is a hard-hitting hip-hop album that is accessible and melodic. That’s quite a feat.

Very fun! It was a good way to start a not so great Monday.

Stand-out tracks: Peter Piper, It's Tricky, Walk This Way, Perfection, Raising Hell, You Be Illin' Proud To Be Black I'm normally not a big fan of hip-hop/rap, but I was surprised by how much of this album I found enjoyable. The beats are catchy and the lyrics are pretty wild, but fun. Some of the beat boxing stuff, on"Hit It Run" especially, was quite annoying, but most of the tracks were fine if some not a bit repetitive. Overall an enjoyable listen.

Highlights: Peter Piper, It's Tricky, My Adidas, Walk This Way, Is It Live, Perfection, Raising Hell A very dope upbeat 80s hip hop record. Love listening to it from time to time, so I was very happy to see it on this list. It has a similar energy to License to Ill which I also loved listening to back when Raising Hell was often in rotation during covid. The similarity is the fusion of rock and hip hop, and it doesn't just appear on the unexpected collab woth Aerosmith. The rock is present throughout the whole record! It's amazing how cool they sound just from the beats and their rap skills - all that with minimal cussing. Heck, on Is It Live they didn't even dare say "ass" so he said "behind" - ain't that some restraint. The first half was leagues above the second. Again, I love listening to both the record as a whole, but also the tracks on their own.

классный, но не совсем мое

Classic rap album by one of the greats! Good songs few clunkers lol

7 - GOOD

The first four tracks are pinnacle level achievement. Some of the most critical early rap in history. That said, it can't help from fading a little after that. It's a 5 for importance, but I drop it to a 4 just for how often I'd see myself wanting to listen to the whole thing as opposed to just the openers.

old hiphop me likey

I feel like the album first half was 5 stars then it got a little slower and little less interesting

Good to hear more songs on this album

Excellent.

Excellent 3 track run with Tricky, My Adidas, and Walk this Way. You be Illin and Peter Piper are also gems on this album. The Rick Ruben touch shines through, with more intricate beats and the group comes through with more intricate rhyme schemes as compared to their first album. There are some filler tracks in the middle of the album which bumps this down to 4 stars, but overall it is a great early hip hop album

My introduction to my favorite style of music is "King of Rock" on a 7 inch at my granddad's bar in Dekalb County, Georgia in 1985. So that remains my favorite Run DMC album even though this one is arguably better. I can't get to a 5.

Old skool!

Really liked it, I particularly enjoyed the song that feats Aerosmith. The whole album has a certain upbeat energy that won't let me sit still.

Solid old stool hip to the hop so you don't stop 🙃

The first 5 tracks are amazing and I can't believe they are all on the same album!

WHAT WHAT RUN DMC

*The first half of this album is an all time hip hop record *It slows a bit on the B side but still an influential album

The Beastie Boyz obviously took a ton a ton of inspiration from RUN DMC Even Kid Koala when he made his full life puppet film concert (sounds weird, but one of the best things I ever watched.) had a little tribute to the too.

8/10 31/01/25

Very 80s rap sound. Fun though. Made history with rap/rock fusion so a solid 4 for me.

It's tricky is that girl

Obviously an incredibly important milestone in the genesis of the genre. Never listened to this one before, though my dad was a big Run D.M.C. fan back in the day and so I heard a lot of King of Rock growing up. Favorites from this album were Walk This Way, and Raising Hell. Also added Proud to Be Black to my 1001 Albums playlist, 50% because it's really good and 50% because I'm a sucker for a George Washington Carver reference. 8/10, 4 stars.

mislio sam da ce da me smara, jer je stari rep ono slican flow slican beat uvek, ali me je iznenadilo koriscenje rock gitara, rick rubin je produceovao vrv je zato toliko do jaja, legendaran album, odlicni su

Good album with some classics

Review - God damn this is still such a good album. You can see it prefiguring later hip-hop which was more sample based but it's still got a lot of turntablism and a lot of sections with nothing but programmed drums. Jam Master Jay was just ahead of his time. And Run and DMC were moving past the early hip hop sound that seems too hokey to a modern listener. Not to mention predating rap metal by a solid decade with songs like Raising Hell and Walk This Way. Still a very good listen today Rating - 8.5/10 Need to hear? - YES

fun album. some great samples. some very silly rhymes.

A very fun, engaging, amazingly produced album from Run DMC, with some of my favourite hip hop beats to come out of the 80s, easily one of the best albums in their catalog too. I’m not exactly in love with every single track here, especially dumb girl, but the album maintains its energy for the majority of its pretty short run time.

Obviously we don’t get a lot of modern hip hop without these guys but it’s so tough to take some of these bars seriously. The title track and all the singles are fun. Some misogyny but nothing like some other old school. Light 4.

Maybe not great, but at least fun. The collaboration with Aerosmith was truly innovative. That and a couple of other songs opened the door for rap/metal and bands ranging from the Beastie Boys to Limp Bizkit.

I’ve done It's Tricky on karaoke, so I can confirm that not everyone can rock a rhyme that's right on time. Run DMC make it sound easy though on this album - and so much fun.

fun flash back. the album that made rap mainstream

3.5/5⭐️

Buen disco. Entretenido, letras cagadas. Me gusto, me la pase muy bien escuchándolo. No había escuchado todas las canciones de Raising Hell y me sorprendió, no es un disco de dos o tres canciones buenas y lo demás es relleno.

Had fun.

Tricky

This album is so good. So close to 5/5, but many of the tracks have such a similar flow that they often blend together. I cant believe this made it onto a list as British (derogatory) as this one 4.5/5

Classic old school hip hop. Some classic tracks on this album.

Super catchy, great fun, especially the first four songs in sequence gave off such a vibrant energy.

Ah yes, the fun-vibes kind of hip-hop/rap. Very fun to listen to, and some absolute bangers like It's Tricky, Walk This Way and Hit It Run. Even though I'm a huge fan of hip-hop, this feels kind of dated and repetitive. I think it has enough for a 4 though.

Felt like I was either at a really good wedding or a really fun club.

Had a lot of fun with this! -Peter Piper: dang this cowbell sounds so familiar - then I realize it's in Missy Elliot's "Work It", another classic -It's Tricky: you can't go wrong with a simple playground like rhyme/beat combo like this, that's why "Mickey" (or even the sampled "My Sharona") and today's Kpop "APT" are so catchy and popular. I watched the music video and felt so much exhiliration from 1) seeing younger Penn and Teller! 2) when Run-DMC uses their voices as percussion, like when DMC jumps up going "uh huh uh huh uh huh" while also jumping up and down in the driver's seat 3) the growly bass from the sampled "My Sharona" really works with the yelling rap -Dumb Girl: dang, was my mom a secret Run-DMC fan? Because I swear she has said all of these lyrics to me while growing up -Son of Byford: wow, the beatboxing sounds super raw and you can hear the saliva coming out. This is a great transition to Proud to be Black, another banger, where they use their voices and growls to go well with the scratching

Very funny to have this a day after Alex hit Beastie Boys for being knockoff run-DMC Listening Notes: -It's tricky and beastie boys reminds me of when my brother used to play these snowboarding video games while listening to his music (beastie boys, red hot chili peppers)--the game was named after It's Tricky -I'm reminded of the only podcast I ever listened to with Rick Rubin, who explained that this cover of Walk This Way was his attempt to explain to Rock and Rap fans than the two genres aren't that different. I remember thinking that was cool. Now in this program, we've seen Rock doing rap (mostly Nu metal) which is usually awful, but rap doing rock works a lot better. Huh. -Fair chunk of misogyny on Is it Live (and probably elsewhere when I wasn't paying attention to lyrics). -Title track goes hard. -Dumb Girl. I mean, the misogyny is a bit much Review: I'm in a pickle because I said beastie boys was a four, but this is definitely better than them, but worse than a five. Realistically, this is like a 3.5 and Paul's boutique was 3, but I'll round up for the sake of consistency.

this album was long as hell too but it was good at least

I love classic hip hop - rapping over an electric guitar beat will always immediately win me over no matter what is happening. Consider this a 4.5

It starts to sound a little samey by the end when played all at once but the start, running up to Walk This Way is absolutely top-class.

Classic bass and drums. Still sounds fresh

This is really one of the most important hip hop albums in history. The cultural impact is undeniable, but the quality is also really great. It's very 80s with the raw beats, loud drums and rock influences, but the songs are so much fun. So many classic rap songs: Peter Piper, It's Tricky, Walk This Way... The rappers do a great job of sounding fun and energetic over these beats. There's a few duds towards the end but overall the album is super solid.

Classic.

I don't know much about this style of rap but I do know that I can bop to it. This album has a few really famous tracks that I was happy to hear again. Favorite song: You Be Illin'. What fun and hilarious song, love the storytelling.

The first four tracks on this are incredible. They are all-time classics that set the template for this era of rap and in many ways inspired all of hip-hop to come. The rest of the album is pretty good too, though not on the same level. For a rap album this early in the game, there's nothing else like it. I think the only knock on the record is that it sounds dated in comparison with the works it inspired. Still, this is several years before the first Public Enemy album dropped, 5 years before Biggie and Tupac, more than a decade before more modern-sounding artists like Nas. No one can deny the influence of Run-DMC.

muy bueno uatafak - rap

Incredible flow throughout the album

8.5/10

A classic - enjoyed listening to it! Run DMC are one of the pioneers in hiphop.

Can’t ever go wrong with Run DMC. One of the originals for hip hop. Great album

The megaphone master! The king of rock. Great old school hip hop mixed with rock and roll. Run DMC are legends for a reason. The song where they try and order a big Mac from KFC made me laugh.

They kept in the 1001 the bad one and removed this one!

One of the foundational documents of Hip Hop and the first Hip Hop album to enter the mainstream The rapping is razor sharp and the rhymes are brilliant. Tricky is the absolute, indispensable masterpiece, but there is a flow of bangers, one after the other. Okay, Dumb Girl hasn't aged well and Walk This Way, while great fun, is cheesier than Nonna's lasagne, but these two aside, you'd be hard to find a dud track on the album. Essential

Probably says a lot that the good parts of Walk This Way are by Run-DMC and the bad parts are the ones taken from Aerosmith

Great!

Atomicoooo forse il rap che mi piace? It’s tricky mi ha riportato al liceo Anche quella con gli aerosmith atomica Ma forse io sono la dumb girl lol

Bangery

I understand why the Abbott Elementary teachers were horrified that their kids had never heard of Run DMC

this album was soo fun! i think this album was a good way to start this project! my top three songs were: - my adidas - hit it run - you be illin’ honorable mention: - walk this way i loved the aerosmith feature!

The loud snarly beatboxing in my ear intimidates my very essence Fun listen even if Tricky is still the best song

It’s tricky!!

I enjoyed this quite a bit.

It's Tricky instantly takes me to Christmas Day 2002/2003 when I got a PS2 and the SSX Tricky Snowboarding video game, where this was the game's main soundtrack. But putting that aside, this album slaps. The beats, drum kicks, flows, everything suits my ear. I appreciate and respect NWA, Eminem, and Snoop, but this Run DMC album doesn't contain the same level of vulgarity and slurring those albums, making it a little more palatable.

Super influential, sick as hell break beats. You know that game where you put one hand on a stick and then another person puts their hand above and you take turns reaching the top? That's what Run D.M.C. were doing with the Beasties with early hip-hop. Slick Rick also threw his hand on the broom for a little bit. For 1986 this is crazy, that opening run? How could the genre not explode after that? Favorite Tracks: It's Tricky, My Adidas, Pefection, Proud to be Black

Pay your respects to the OGs, y'all. This is definitely of its era, but that opening run of "Peter Piper," "It's Tricky," "My Adidas," and "Walk This Way" is still A+. I saw these guys in college, and it ruled. I would still go see them now, but...RIP Jay. FUN STORY: In 2014, I had to go to Comic Con for work. I stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel, and the elevator bank on my floor had a giant picture of Run-DMC on the wall. One night, I need to grab something at the nearby CVS, but when I showed it up, it was closed. I was looking at my phone to see if there was another pharmacy nearby when two dudes walked up. They start insistently knocking on the CVS window until the clerk inside finally comes to the door. "We're closed," the dude says, understandably irritated. "Don't you know who this is?!" goes one the guys, pointing to the other. "This is DMC!" "I just need some mouthwash!" DMC said. The clerk let them in, because DMC has earned his mouthwash.

I was feeling some very strong 5-star energy through the first half of this album. It's Tricky and Walk This Way are absolute classics. And Peter Piper and My Adidas are pretty great too. The Rick Rubin guitar on Raising Hell was interesting. But then we slid into Dumb Girl and some other clunkers. But there's nothing like that early Run DMC rock-rap mix.

Great album

i listened to two songs i think just because i don’t listen to hiphop much but it was cool

Classic hip hop never gets old! Dope album

This album is one of the greats in hip-hop. Loved the combination of lyricism with the guitar riffs.

I recognize this is an important album for the era, but it isn’t the style I really look for. High 3 to light 4

I think I've been told enough times who they are now. Great fun.

The first few tracks on this were brilliant. There’s a lot of energy on this album which I enjoy. I will say the second half was a bit weaker though.

Love classic hip hop and the spin these guys put on it. Classic! 4.5

Classic stuff

The start of this album is great, and it just gets progressively worse (none of it is bad though)

It doesn't let up much even on the songs that aren't total and complete bangers. And the bangers are BANGERS. When one thinks of "right album, right time, right group, right audience", this should be the poster child. They'd built up to this one as each of their previous two records did better than the one before it. This record is amazing in a completely amazing year for records.

Could have sworn I had another DMC album on here already, but apparently not. But feels like quite the pick for their first full album to absorb. Let’s see… Just instantly feels like a classic, even without the big hits. Early Rick Rubin production and just such a trailblazer of an album. Sometimes get frustrated at how basic some of these “of their time” albums but this one has an endearing and raw quality that still works and captures its time. Still so innovative and the guitars such an important and original feature. Maybe hit a little done by the end and maybe could have finished a few tracks earlier. But glad for it to loop and be back at the solid first half again.

First track in and i was already a HELL YEAH

Best Track - "Walk This Way"

I really liked it definitely going to help me get into my Hip-hop/Rap

more than a few known/good songs

Still sounds great!

Run-DMC e jo ganske morsomt, og æ hadde neppe hørt på det utenom albumprosjektet, så sånn sett e æ glad æ hold på med det her.

Raining Hell is dated as hell, but I love it. If I'm honest this may have been the first time I actually listened to the entire album, glad I finally did, thoroughly enjoyed listening.

More fun than I expected!

A lot better than their debut: more collaboration, better flows, slicker beats, more fun lyrics, and a wholesome energy.

Solid start to the year. Great HipHop album, no skips throughout!

Finished in one go. Good!

Death Grips for boomers (complimentary)

Groovy beats. Too much Aerosmith. Seems dated. Obviously a bunch of moments that were alluded to by rappers afterward. Probably won’t go back to this one much.

Hell yeah! The beginnings!

Some absolute classics in here. Some of the filler songs bring it down, but otherwise could be a 5

Fun, original, and creative

I don’t listen to much hip-hop but this was great!! So fun, especially doubled up with the Queen Latifah album I listened to recently!!

cool discovery

No better start to the day than listening to Raising Hell on the bike in Amsterdam. Absolute classic.

An album with only bangers, seamless transitions between tracks, its just fun. Definitely deserves a good average rating since its pretty easy to like this.

Hell yeah! Some classics here!

The first half of this album is kind of a generational run of songs.

classic hip hop, iconic, formational

simplesmente dmc perfeição. backvocal insano 9/10

Great classic hip-hop. It has It's Tricky on it, which like. Come on. 4 stars at least. Walk This Way is good, too. The rest of it all sounds like what you'd expect Run-D.M.C to sound like. Not much variation, and it sounds quite alike, with the same productions and tempos. Nonetheless, I like classic hip-hop and this is one of the best.

My favorite aspect of this project is learning things about myself that I wasn't fully aware of. Such as my apparent love of new wave music, British 90s indie pop, and 80s rap. My second favorite aspect is listening to albums from which I know a few of the group's biggest hits and come to appreciate the album tracks just as much if not even more. This album fell squarely into both categories.

Great album classic rap

A very nostalgic Hip Hop album, I can hear how much important the message and the rhythm was back then Fav songs - It's Tricky, Walk This Way 4/5

I liked this. Some really good beats and some old faves there too!

Ahhh this is a shot of pure nostalgia, I don't think I ever listened to the album in its entirety but I knew at least half the tracks on here - the opening four songs hit like a Mortal Kombat combo, banger after banger. Not the place to come for profound observations or deep feelings, and it doesn't have the same degree of high production and lyrical genius you see later on in hiphop's evolution, but it's a really fun listen and a genuine classic that takes me right back to my school days. That collabo with Aerosmith blew my li'l mind at the time (mainly being a rock fan back then) - it was a really enjoyable, light-hearted era in rap and they were clearly a major influence on the Beastie Boys who I love. I needed this today, thanks Run DMC!

Not my genre, but I can't deny the appeal. Some of these just kick ass.

So so good

Faixa favorita: Proud to Be Black Letra favorita: “The unbelieving receiving prophecy so true I cut the head off the Devil and I throw it at you” — Raising Hell Como me senti: dançante, nostálgica Resumo geral: Um álbum que soa como estar entrando numa rua movimentada onde todo mundo parece mais legal que você. Minimalista, agressivo e cheio de swagger: puro rap dos anos 80. Reação pessoal: Como uma reunião de grupo numa praça ou em frente de casa, soltando rimas e nos colocando no topo do mundo. Uma arrogância charmosa.

another 1980s classic

I'm torn, but all in all more fun than old-school hip hop cliche.

Nice beats, real fun to listen to.

Classic and hardens back to simpler times for the genre

Tight & nostalgic. Fantastic example of mid-80s genre crossover.

I’m not sure what Rick Rubin does, some say not a damned thing. Yet he keeps getting high profile producing gigs and is considered a genius. If I had to defend him, this would be Exhibit A. He didn’t make Run or DMC better mcs, didn’t make Jay a better DJ. But he apparently is the guy who brought in all the rock samples. It’s a stroke of genius, and you can draw a straight line from this to sampling masterpieces like Paul’s Boutique, Nation of Millions, 3 Feet High and Rising, and many other classics. They weren’t the best of the era (for me, it’s Erik B and Rakim, who didn’t even make this dopey list) but have to be credited for taking hip hop off the Bronx street corners and schools and onto MTV and the mainstream. Also, I had this cassette in 1986, 8th grade, and still love it

I liked it more than I thought I would!

2/3rds gold

Repetitive, but a good time. What is repeated is something fun!

:). 3.9

# Album Name: Raising Hell # Artist: Run DMC # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Genuinely a pretty good album. Not usually my thing but very enjoyable. # Top Tunes: PP / Tricky / Walk this way / Adidas / Raising hell # Would I listen to it again? yes

Fantastic album with the first half being perfect but then falling off a bit towards the end 7.9/10

An album so ubiquitous in my youth that, despite never owning it of consciously listening to it all the way through, I knew almost every song by heart.

There's even more bangers than I remember on this one.

Even though rap and hip-hop have evolved so much in nearly 40 years, I think this will always hit me deep down, just like early Beatles. They're synthesizing everything that's come before into something new and they're sounding amazing while they do it.

How could you not bump along to this album? The vocal transitions are on point. It's not my favorite listen, but it gets a star bump for its place in history and cultural importance

Enjoyed this. It was released the same year as Licensed to Ill by the Beastie Boys and there's a lot of crossover in the sound. Looking at the overall chronology I assume Run-D.M.C. influenced Beastie Boys, although I listened to the latter first on this challenge.

This sounds incredibly dated, but not as dated as I expected if that makes sense. Fun to listen to. I don't know if this is grading on a curve, but I sort of think about comparing early rap to modern rap in the same way as baseball. Simply based on better competition, nutrition, playing conditions, wealth, and everything else, today's baseball players are faster, stronger, and more skilled than any who came before. Not every pitcher threw 95 back in the day and almost none through 100, today that's commonplace. Babe Ruth was orders of magnitude better than his peers, but every player today is better than him. Similarly, even the very best MCs of the 80s, up to and including Rakim, blasphemous as it is to say, don't have the technical virtuosity that would follow from better rappers to come. The analogy isn't perfect because unlike ball, not EVERY rapper today has more skills. I mean, say, compare DMC to Black Thought or Freddie Gibbs or Andre 3000 and it's obvious he can't keep up. But, like, he's STILL better than Big Sean. In any event, it sounds dated, but the production really kicks ass, the energy is there, and there's more clever stuff in here than I expected. "Walk This Way" is tired because I've heard it too many times, but the other singles and the deep tracks hit. You can see why they sold out arenas. High points: "Hit It Run", "Raising Hell", "It's Tricky', "My Adidas" Low Points: "You Be Illin'", "Dumb Girl"

I liked this album a lot and it is a classic of course. One of the best rap albums in the 80's. Some of the lyrics hasn't aged well but if you consider that this album is almost 40 years old, it is not one of the bad ones compared to other rap-albums. The beats where mostly really good. Not so big fan of the guitar-stuff in the album but have to give credit to that it was revolutionary back then. Raising Hell includes some well-aged rap-classics but I think it loses some of it's focus nearing the end of album.

Strong opening four track run, uneven after that.

I didn’t have the time to give this that it deserved

Not bad.

I knew most of these songs but had never listened to the full album, which was a mistake I was happy to rectify.

Their third album..Hip Hop. The first four tracks are really good ! Walk This Way (feat. Aerosmith) is a classic track. Then we get to Hit It Run which is one I really like too. This album and the Run-D.M.C. (1984) album are huge in Hip Hop history. I prefer this one of the two.

It's a really fun album. There's plenty of catchy beats and I had a bit of a sing-along/rap-along for the few songs I knew. I ran to it. And, I found that while I did really enjoy listening to it. There were a few dud tunes. Who sings about their Adidas?! Dumb Girl? (That one didn't age well!). Why I like the group, I like the sound and I liked a lot of the songs... I didn't think it was worthy of 5 star status. Oh, and I don't like Aerosmith, so don't get me started on that Walk This Way business. 4 stars.

This album is like being at the dance hall some gangster is dissing your fly girl. You put him in his place with some furious funky dance moves, while also suggesting that you've got quite a few friends out with you tonight and you don't mind punching on.

old school hip hop perfection… with the exception of “dumb girl”. not sure what they were thinking with that one. highlights: “peter piper” “it’s tricky” “walk this way” “proud to be black”

This shit is fire, I fear I think Rap has a tendency to age badly because of its positioning on the cusp of underground culture. If something differentiates itself by way of being controversial or norm-breaking, then as it ages and culture assimilates it will inevitably lose its edge. But this is one is one iconic sample after the other and its rhythm and rhyme are satisfying. Plus, I think we are over the hump of late 80s and early 90s being cringe. Plus now my algorithm thinks I like 90s era Rap and I've been vibing like I'm the gen X gig worker that is blasting OutKast when they pick you up from the airport. Perfection.

This album was so much FUN. I am not an expert so I won’t wax poetic about how Run-DMC paved the way for so much of the hip hop sounds we hear today. But this album is full of so many songs that just make you want to bounce. I listened to it while biking around Brooklyn and could really appreciate how funny Run-DMC is in their lyrics and how much their sounds are SO New York. I can still rap all of Its Tricky so I call that a win. Might mess around and add this album back into my “bopping around New York” rotation.

Very good. Some big hits and solid rap rock credentials with the title song Raising Hell.

I enjoyed this so much more than their debut

I enjoyed it more than the previous Run DMC album. That 4 song run to kickstart the project is legendary -1 star due to dumb girl

falls off a lot on side b but is still kind of a refreshing sound that you just don't hear anymore

classic

Run-D.M.C.'s Raising Hell is a landmark album that didn't just raise the bar—it redefined it. With its fresh, hard-hitting beats and razor-sharp rhymes, the record fused rock and rap in a way that was revolutionary for its time, most famously on “Walk This Way” with Aerosmith. The production, courtesy of Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons, brought a raw, stripped-down energy that made hip hop feel urgent and accessible to a broader audience.

Great listen all around.

The wiki described them as a pioneering group in fusion music blending rap and rock. I really liked all the beats too, and it made me want to listen to their records.

Enjoy the beats and the rapping, just not that amazing for me . Really like tricky though. Specific rating - 3.9 Fav song- it’s tricky Least fav- dumb girl

very dance vibes; would be much more likely to go to a club if this was what they played...

Really enjoyed it, some really fun and catchy parts. Some of the songs started to run into each other a little but still really great beats. Favourite song: It's Tricky Least: Dumb Girl
