Reviews (page 6 of 13)
I don’t tend to find myself listening to hip hop, but listening to this album was really nice. Run-DMC is really interesting and they’ve got an awesome cover of Walk This Way
Good old school hip hop album. Rick Rubin's involvement shows with the rock influences. The first 4 tracks are clearly on a different leven than the rest of the album. The rest is still good.
Yup, this is pretty darn dope. Favourite tracks: Peter Pipe, It's Tricky, Walk This Way, Is It Live, Hit It Run, You Be Illin'.
eh ja, klassiker zum mitsingen. klare favoriten mit den bekannten titel, aber solide all-through. old school halt.
Not my usual listen. It was fun though. Bumped up a star for It's Tricky and Walk This Way.
Classic old school rap.
Classic. Very of its time in a good way. Super fun to listen to. It does all start to sound the same though.
I understand how this album helped to start a whole cultural revolution. It was would have been so powerful and cool and fun in its time.
Cool old skool beats, yo in for a treat, yeah awesome man, this music sweet. (ahem) sorry, couldn't resist .... Yeah, maybe leave the rhymes to the pros LOL
Quality rhyming
Back 2 tha 80s. Yeah bwoooooyyy!
The first half of the album is awesome, the second half is unfortunately lacklustre.
Second run DMC in three days. this is the album that really blew them up and rightly so. Compared to modern hip hop it's pretty simplistic, but in context of it's time it's creative, boundary pushing and great fun to listen to.
Classic. 80s NY hip hop sound. Damn.
Peter Piper It's Tricky My Adidas Walk This Way
okay this is actually fire robert donley morris reference also tyler the creator reference in one of the songs this is a banger
Pre-listening thoughts: literally all I can think of is White Chicks dance battle I’m so sorry😭😭 Post/during listening thoughts: ITS TRICKAYYYYYYY ‼️‼️‼️ I love this so much actually. It’s beyond fun and such a product of its time in the best way possible. Love that Aerosmith came out to play their sample live. It’s kind of Beastie Boy-esque although I’m assuming Run-DMC was the blueprint here. First four song run is historic. Strong 4 stars! 8.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: just like other rap of this time, I think you need to hear a selection from diff artists but not necessarily this whole album Fav tracks: Peter Piper, It’s Tricky, My Adidas, Walk This Way, Hit It Run, You Be Illin’
Not a hip hop person but this was a fun listen. The top half is much better than the second.
Some very recognisable songs
Круто. Есть пара любимых хитов
A great album that showed the many sides of Run-DMC - some classic tracks on there
It’s hard to continue the momentum when your album starts off with 4 of the greatest songs in your genre’s history. It’s insane how timeless “Peter Piper,,” “It’s Tricky,” “My Adidas,” and “Walk This Walk” sound, especially considering how entrenched they are with ‘80s hip-hop tropes, but damn do they still hold all their power while distilling Run-DMC to their simplest, strongest elements. Those 4 tracks alone elevate Raising Hell to classic status. The rest of Raising Hell, however, lacks that Midas Touch. There certainly are highlights (“Is It Live,” “You Be Illin’,” and “Proud to Be Black,”), but there’s also lowlights, too (“Perfection” “Dumb Girl,” and the throwaway “Son of Byford”). If I took away the 4-song opener, I wouldn’t call this a particularly bad record, but I would have to note that it’s a particularly ‘80s hip-hop record. Either you’ll like that, or you’ll find it dated. I personally enjoy a lot of ‘80s rap, and I like Run-DMC’s approach to it, so despite its bad cuts, I am mostly a fan, even if I know it’s far from the greatest hip-hop record ever made. It isn’t like Raising Hell has aged like milk, but it hasn’t aged like fine wine, either. The majority of this album is like a flat Coke you left in the fridge for a day or two – you can still enjoy the taste, but the magic is mostly gone. But goddamn, those first 4 songs!!!
Very cool beats and sound
Really old skoool, Walk this way is a banger 3.8
Awesome. This was a good listen. I already loved Peter Piper, It's Tricky, and Walk This Way and definitely think those are the best tracks. But the whole album brings that same high energy and the songs flow together so well.
I really do not enjoy Walk This Way
Come on- walk this way is great.
I enjoyed the funk(?)/jazz(?) inspirations that are on this album, mixed in with pop as well. It wasn’t just a standard rap album, and there’s some real bangers. Overall, I really enjoyed it!
Frigging old school Rap - a turntable a mic and rhymes suitable for any street contest. Memories.
This is some good ribbity rib rip rap rappin Favorite Tracks: Peter Piper, It’s Tricky
It’s tricky
Some phenomenal tracks. 4.
It's tricky to rock a rhyme to rock a rhyme that's right on time it's tricky. Tricky tricky tricky tricky. Also Pop Will Eat Itself sampled the title track.
I prefer the lighthearted early hip hop vs. angry Gangsta rap full of heavy language. These songs are peppy and fun. RDMC has a unique approach with the alternating banter. The collaboration with Aerosmith in the MTV era cannot be understated. This was one of the most radical cross genre collaborations up to that period of time. Coupled with the video breaking down the wall and performing together, it was a huge splash single/video at the time. Rounded up for influence… 3.5/5
I really liked the sonic simplicity of this. Totally forgot that three big hits were all on this. No doubt that bands like Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, NWA, etc. would not have reached their level of popularity and relevance without these guys. And the collaboration with Aerosmith stands as one of the most pivotal genre-mash up partnerships. This album and band broke down walls figuratively and literally (see video for Walk This Way) that continues today.
While the front half of this album contains the hits (several), I think the vibes carry on consistently throughout. Really enjoyed it, while not typically my thing
Start of the album still holds up and is a great listen. Amazing influence in rap and even revitalizing Aerosmith’s career. Also read they got a $1mm endorsement deal from Adidas. Brilliant! 3.75
Not a huge fan of 80's hip hop but hard to deny this record. First four songs are bangers. Easy 4* for me. 3.75/5
have you ever heard a great song like this well thats what I heard from the first album I think its got great instruments and lyrics and was pretty good I think the album was great and I would recommend listening to this album
Much more serious and badass that I remembered. These guys helped to elevate the genre into a legitimate art form.
Great album that deserves its place here, unlike most of the shit I've had the last 2 weeks here.
Pretty fun!
So many familiar songs from the 80’s
Hell yes!!!
It’s like if a 15 year old got his hands on a sample pad and this was his first major assessment in music class for year 10. But like in a good way, Beauty in simplicity right here AND IM BLACK YALL
Culturally significant. Fun listen.
Very good and fun
Incredibly strong album - I can see how it was so influential and important to hip hop. "Walk this Way" was the clear highlight of the album for me, though the first four songs are just banger after banger. Took off an entire star for "Dumb Girl" because I hated how misogynistic it was.
Groundbreaking for the hip-hop scene. By now I'm sure much of the tracklist is played out, but that doesn't take away from the importance of the album. I want fast food and a new pair of Adidas now.
I'm in agreement with those saying that the most satisfying tracks aren't the hits - 'Raising Hell' and 'You Be Illin'' are my personal faves. That being said, the biggies do hold up - 'It's Tricky' is fun, and perhaps because it's been a minute since I've heard it I can afford a degree of benevolence, but 'Walk This Way' is still a gas. There's a crispness and solidity to the beats and samples that I like - it's a spare, roomy, punchy sounding album. Without being a huge rap fan, I was pretty happy with spending forty minutes or so with Run DMC.
Love!
Classic, old-school hip-hop
This is basically a Greatest Hits record. So many good tracks on one record. The mood is uplifting and inspiring. RUN DMC bring the party to your ears with this release. Old school hip hop usually isn’t my favorite, but this album is such quality.
SMACZNE bardzo chlopaki se hip hopujom ale gitarka tez zarzucona wziu wziu pipi stare dobre
Love taking it back in time with some OG genre defining rap.
I’ve had one Run D.M.C albums generated before today, and I remember really wanting to love it and feeling somewhat underwhelmed and only really remembering It’s Like That. Fortunately, today’s album is much more what I was holding the initial one would be. The beats have that big, classic 80’s sound, and there was much more to enjoy with what was happening. It incorporated a fair bit more rock music than I expected (aside from the obviously expected Aerosmith input). It made me wonder if Run D.M.C may have been the innovators of rap rock. If so, do we blame them for Limp Bizkit?
It’s seems I’ve listened to this album before as I’ve liked the first four tracks already on Spotify. I have to agree with my former self that these are the best tracks. After that it gets a bit samey but I like this early hip hop sound and thoroughly enjoyed the album.
Legends
The first four tracks of this are so good that it kinda makes the rest of it seem kinda average. After hearing the openers tracks like "Perfection" and "Hit It Run" sound really dated; they are missing that spark in the samples and turntable work that make the other tracks work. Those openers, though, those are all timeless. Sure the rapping is dated but for whatever reason I can't explain in those songs it doesn't sound that way at all. "Raising Hell" and "You Be Illin'" come close to that with the saxophone/guitar and scratch hits, but it's not quite there. This gets an extra star for how good the beginning is, otherwise it'd be a 3.
Good classic stuff.
Another great golden age hip-hop album. This one looms larger than most, with some monster hits that have stood the test of time.
tschikkaschikkatschikk
Everyone likes this album right? I’m not keen on it but even I like this album. A deserved placing.
Cool
1st half is all classics, falls off in the 2nd half. higher score because of all hits
Although I´m not into Hip-Hop I can´t resist the Run D.M.C. sound on this. The album contains the bangers "It's Tricky" and "Walk This Way" and some other good tracks like "Raising Hell", "You Be Illin'" and "Proud to Be Black". A pretty solid pick! 3,5
It's a classic, and it probably planted the seed for all rap-rock acts to grow from. It sounds a bit dated but it's still a bop.
Iconic hip hop album, but it does have some filler songs.
Very good album, only hits
I’ve only gotten into rap fairly recently, and I think it’s so fascinating to see its origins and evolution. Going from a world dominated by rock into a surgence of rap in the 80’s and the widespread experimenting with the genre in the 90’s is something I find very interesting. That being said, Run-D.M.C. is one of these bands that really popularized and made the genre, bringing it to so many around the world and showing what could be done with some sampling, mixing, and vocals. This record in particular really shows the talent in the band to maintain a steady feel throughout the record while also keeping things fresh. The first few songs are obviously amazing, but this remains pretty consistent through the record, without meandering on too long. I’m not sure some of the songs aged too well (I’m looking at you “Dumb Girl”) but culturally and influentially speaking, this record has yet to age at all. Great listen, 4/5.
A five star album that gets two stars knocked off for revitalizing Aerosmith’s career and one added back for being indirectly responsible for SSX Tricky.
Old school? Some of these tracks never get old.
cool
didn't like it all that much, but was really surprised, i knew a lot of these songs! iconic
4.25
Very nice hip-hop album
Great percussion. Someone said this is the original rap rock album though which keeps it from a 5.
Recognized a few of these
Excellent
I don’t love a lot of old rap, but I like Run-DMC. They’re kinda silly.
This album is probably the beginning of mainstream hip-hop. The style is very basic lyrically but it's got a great jam.
Comes out of the gate with a string of great tracks but tails off into sameness
Yeah this was frickin' old school cool. I miss 80s Hip-Hop!
Well this is a surprisingly huge amount of fun
So much better than the other album on here, the production has come to life - resulting in Walk This Way being a masterclass in remixing for the time. The vocals are pretty tame but it's still early days, and I find their comparative innocence quite endearing.
Okay, this thing of tossing the line back-and-forth between multiple rappers is fun. Excellent timing and discipline. And hey, a music video with Penn and Teller?
really fun. i didn't expected to much, but i really liked it! the song with aerosmith is amazing
Pretty cool. Not really my thing, but it’s classic.
It took me a long time to appreciate the mix between rock and rap that this album highlights. But my musical understanding of genre and the various fusions of it have shown me by now that there is no "mistake" or compromise or selling out, etc. Run-DMC is funny, relevant, no doubt classic and iconic as a band and thier music does well against the test of time. This album is one of those that makes me hesitate when nastalgic and generation specific comments are made about music not being what it used to and all that. Generally I find it cringe, but you know ? ... Who is the contemporary Run DMC? This also goes in reverse, Yes, great music drops every day! But don't get overly smug about just HOW great something is until you take a little trip back in time.
A fun, bumping hip hop album. Had a good time listening to this one. Clear to see where the Beastie Boys get their sound from. The last couple songs weren’t my favorites, but the album had a strong first half. Standouts: It’s Tricky, Walk This Way (feat. Aerosmith), Is It Live, Hit It Run, and Raising Hell.
Super funky, childhood flashback sounds! This album was so groundbreaking! Making me miss my adidas superstars 💙
Good upbeat songs! Very nostalgic 4 ⭐️
Definitely know Run DMC. Pretty sure we listened to some RUN DMC earlier. Nope that was Public Enemy. I have always wanted to check out one of their records.
Liked it
Hip hop masterpiece
This is an excellent album, but I like The first one more. Walk this Way has not aged well.
Horrible | Bad | Mid | ★ Great ★ | Perfect --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Good songs: Peter Piper, It's Tricky, My Adidas, Walk This Way (feat. Aerosmith), Is It Live, Perfection, Hit It Run, You Be Illin', Proud to Be Black Mid songs: Raising Hell, Dumb Girl, Son Of Byford Bad songs: None! :3 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Overall rating: 8/10
4⭐️
some bangers on this, aerosmith was such a good feature on this
its tricky to place a rate on this great album. Something adidas
Raising Hell was better than expected. Tons of bangers and very culturally relevant. Walk this Way is iconic and one of the most songs ever written. Combining 2 cultures and changing music (credit to the Beastie Boys as well for 1986s License to Ill) my adidas and Tricky are also elite 8.7/10
So refreshing to get some hip hop. I love the beats on these 80s tracks, so good to cruise along to. Great album, with some cool bits of rock thrown in.
Hell yeah. This is the kinda shit I live for. I played SSX Tricky as a kid so I absolutely love It's Tricky.
Very old-school rap, high energy with equal brashness and humor. Minimal instrumentals, mostly just beats and voices. And how do you forget “Walk This Way?”
Great album holding up really well. Need to circle back to it at least one more time.
7/10 beastie boys. old school
It’s great. Remembered it as losing a lot of steam after the first 3-4 tracks. Raising Hell is a great song I’d completely forgotten about. I’d give it a 5 except it resurrected Aerosmith. At the time that was cool and remained ok for awhile. However it resulted in “I don’t want to miss a thing” so minus one star. (Not really, I was giving this a 4 anyway).
i honestly didnt think i liked hip hop that much, but this is awesome.. maybe i will have to listen to more like it
Starts out strong then 2nd half is filler
By turns goofy and passionate about social issues, combining rock and rap in a way that had never been done before, Raising Hell is perhaps Run-DMC’s ultimate artistic statement. Special mention to the late Jam Master Jay, crafting incredible beats on the turntables.
80s Hip Hop is fun!
Consider hell properly raised.
Love the beats and the way they finish each other’s lines. Kickin’ it old school.
Tolles Album mit vielen Hits wie It‘s tricky oder Walk this way mit Aerosmith.
Reveals the true power of ann electric drum track
Hip Hop. Wird nicht meine Lieblingsmusik. Aber trotzdem interessant.
A great encapsulation of early hip hop, effortlessly cool songs.
Iconic
I can't believe that my natural instinct was to compare this to Beastie boys :(
One of the first hip-hop groups to really integrate rock guitar with beats and rhymes - setting the template definitively with Walk This Way. Four monster tracks to start, and though the second side can't help but feel a bit of a let down after that this is a straight 4 all the way.
Forgot how great this album was. Skipped Walk This Way, though.
A solid 5 stars for the catchy beats and cultural impact. Minus one star for the misogyny.
Old school rap with some era defining songs. I still wear my Addis’s. Some amazing beats and the cover of Walk this Way, is amazing. A few duds brings this score down.
4/5
I like‘em but of you know one song you know the album. Extra point for all iconic hits.
beats on beats on BEATS it’s tricky and walk this way?? a hit
Solid
AWESOME, they’ve got some slick beats, lots of classics and bangers in this album I had no idea were theirs. 3.7
This album was a lot of fun and had aged much better than I expected. This style of rap will also be so nostalgic. There’s just nothing cooler than rapping over essentially just a drum kit. I didn’t know all that stuff about walk this way which was cool. So are they essentially saying this was the first rap song to sample someone essentially?
I was expecting to feel like this album was overrated, but I was pleasantly surprised. Absolutely iconic. So many familiar songs. This album came out well before the era where I really started to like rap. Nice work!
This album was way more fun than it deserves to be. It should be so dated and cheesy that it's painful to listen to, but the formula just works. "Walk This Way" should be in the conversation whenever we bring up great covers. This was definitely my one year olds favorite album.
This rules. Some of the songs in the later half kinda blended together, but overall what a classic
All the lyrics are just entertaining, had me popping my head almost the entire album
Pioneers of an entire genre. Thier influence is still here to this day. Legends.
Old school rap/hip-hop can sometimes be a bit corny. Definitely the case here. But then you read the lyrics and it isn't just variations on nursery rhymes. And there's a rock and roll sample or even a collaboration with one of the biggest names in rock. Some of it is too corny but most of it is iconic.
Wow! I actually enjoyed this a lot. Probably my favorite hip hop album from the list so far. Mixing it with rock was perfect, and even the songs without it were quite fun.
Hyvin työllistää nuoria poikia..
"Dumb Girl" feels a bit out of place on an otherwise super solid, legendary record (tell me you had a bad breakup without actually telling me, lol)
אחלה אלבום עם ביטים מעניינים ושירים טובים
Pretty good - consistently fun to listen to, it had me trapped in the rhythm for most of it. Consistently fun to listen to
Very fun and enjoyable. I was happy to see another hip-hop album to join the fight against british rock. Favourites: its tricky, walk this way, is it live. 4/5
I really liked the fusion of hip-hop and rock-and-roll sounds in this album - they work well together and it's just great to jam to. It was fun and another very solid album with plenty of iconic and classic tracks. Favourite songs were Walk This Way, It's Tricky, and Raising Hell. 4, good stuff
no suelo escuchar este estilo, pero me ha molado
Famosa: Walk This Way (feat. Aerosmith) Le daré un 4, aunque son un poco pesados.
Super hype album. My pops was a break dancer in Patterson so I can picture some dude walking around with a boombox blasting this stuff. I can see why they were so popular! Favorite song was You Be Illin’. Added to my Spotify library.
76/100
Love a bit of hip-hop, however I've never gone back to sort of pre-90s stuff. Of course I've heard a bit, but not in the same way as I listen the 90s amd early 2000s Tupac, Dr. Dre, N.W.A etc. This is a really interesting album and artist tbh. They start off seeming like your average hip-hop, but you get to raising hell (I believe) and there's power chords and electric guitar?? It's a mix of a rap and rock and then not even to mention the percussion - where has the steal band come from??😂😂 I feel like a lot of hip-hop artists such as run-dmc are really overlooked as 'just another rapper', but I really don't think it's true - they're absolutely accomplished musicians in their own right. Thoroughly enjoyed, has been added to library and raising hell has been liked. Will be listening again. Oh, and you be illin is hilarious I love it.
Peter Piper is a banger
I should have listened to more Run DMC as a kid
Great hip-hop album, Walk this Way and Tricky stand out amongst the rest of the tracks, but are far from being the only ones worth a listen. Interestingly, I found this to be a huge contrast from yesterday's Beastie Boys album, even though many connoisseurs of the genre would mention these acts in the same breath. All in all, pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this.
Very enjoyable album and new music to me
This album gets bonus points on its sheer impact: perhaps more than any other album, it made hip hop the biggest movement in popular music since rock and roll. It suffers a bit from the “Seinfeld Isn’t Funny” trope: everything Run-DMC did well was done better by someone else later on—but those artists were standing on the shoulders of artists like Run-DMC. The bridging of rock with rap was a masterstroke, and their “Walk This Way” cover/collaboration remains iconic. A great album that certainly deserves its place on this list.
Puike platen dit. Super old skool hip hop. Ik hou er van
Niet mis hoor
Kiiiiijkkk dit lijkt er meer op. Eindelijk geen ouwewittenmannenmuziek
THIS GOES HARD and that is all i am saying not because it's rap.Its because it has catchy guitar riffs? It's like rap rock and it's pretty good. These are definitely rock, rap, and rhyme.I HATE THE SONG DUMB giRL, Its SUckS don t listen to that song.
Some true gems here, but it was a bit shouty and repetitive by the end. Still a very good time.
Great album. Have heard the hits before but never the deeper cuts. Lots of fun songs.
This is the Run-D.M.C. album to know. These guys brought hip hop to the masses through their collaborative style blending rock riffs with emceed hip hop beats and rhymes.
This album features OG House party jams from start to finish and "You'll see me talkin to a girl A sweet young thing with jheri curls" from Is It Live might just be the most 80's hip hop rhyme ever written.
Incredible album from one of the pioneers of hip hop.
This is great, had me grooving the entire time
Dd
Not bad
Starting an album with Peter Piper, It's Tricky, My Adidas, and Walk This Way is ballsy. The rest of the album certainly isn't bad but it's a little samey and pales in comparison.
Fun beats and thoughtful lyrics. Much more conscious rap than I was expecting from only knowing Walk This Way
Good enough. I personally was not as big of a fan of that grungy 90s/00s punk rock female voice, however I can see the significance of Alanis voice and her presumably starting of that punk rock trend. There is obviously major relevance to the album from the hit song Ironic, and I did really appreciate the theme of a person tearing herself apart because of a lover who makes her not make good decisions. Overall, good message, good music, but perhaps just not my taste.
Cool old-school hip hop. Think I’ve seen that ‘Walk this way’ gave Aerosmith a resurgence. Fun listen, 3.5/5 but rating up as you can easily see how it was influential to the genre
Sparse and elemental. A bit dated in how hard it tries to appeal to hard rock fans, still fairly important as a document.
When they run out of inspiration they start bragging, but there are some clever lyrics. Dumb Girl hasn't aged well. Raising Hell is a great rock song (thanks Rick). I loved this, although Daryl should get over the McDonald's obsession.
Hard to give an album including "Dumb Girl" five stars, but this one is so solid otherwise. Not bad meaning bad, but bad meaning good.
eigentlich ist Hip Hop nicht meins.... aber RUN DMC sind Pflicht
I saw a review on here that I completely agree with. This album is great but it's also kinda disappointing because the first four songs are so fire that after that it's just kinda a letdown. Seriously the first four tracks are absolutely baller. After that it's not that the songs are bad they just don't measure up to the opening set which is understandable. Overall a very solid album.
It's cool
“Sir, the ‘It Slaps’ meter is off the charts!”
This album brought to you by Adidas and Mother Goose ... I thought I'd like this album more, but it was just alright for me. The classics are still classic ("It's Tricky" and "Walk This Way") but a lot of the other songs are more of a novelty than something I'd want to listen to all the time. I never realized how into nursery rhymes these guys are. And "My Adidas" is just weird—it's basically product placement. Run DMC songs are at their best when they use samples and incorporate rock (see the above classics). When left to create their own beats, they apparently just play around with all the Casio keyboard presets, to often annoying results. Lyrically, most of the songs are just about how great they are at rapping. It gets old pretty quickly. And the "beatboxing" on "Hit It Run" is more like someone making fart sounds. I don't know, I get how influential these guys were, and some of the songs are catchy. But a lot of it just feels cheesy now. Best songs: "Tricky," "Walk This Way," "Raising Hell" I'll give it a 4, but it's really more of a 3.5 at best.
absolute classic from Run DMC. bangers.
Gotta love it
Immer noch cool, cool, cool!
After three decades, the lyrics, phrasing, and production come across as dated. This album's influence, however, cannot be overstated. Run-D.M.C. had already begun mixing electronic beats with Hard Rock samples on their previous albums, but their collaboration with Aerosmith on "Walk This Way" dropped Hip-Hop into the laps of White folks who would have dismissed any sort of Rap music otherwise. Thanks to the success of Run-D.M.C., we got Rick Rubin, The Beastie Boys, Rage Against the Machine, etc. Four stars, dropped by one half-star because without this album, we wouldn't have ever had to meet Kid Rock or any of the shitty Rap Metal acts of the 90's and 2000's.
Very close to a 5, but early rap doesn't switch up the rhyming patterns enough.
peter piper- 6 its tricky- 7 my adidas- 6 walk this way- 7 is it live- 6 or 7 perfection- 6 hit it run- 6 or 7 raising hell- 6 or 7, its cray how much beastie boys stole you be illin- 7 dumb girl- 6 son of byford- 6 proud to be black- 7 yeah you can have a 4. what the hell, sure
A classic. Good times all around.
Love 'walk this way'
Thoroughly enjoyed!
One hell of an album of bangers.
A band at the height of their powers.
klassiker des 1990er hh, aber nur wenige superstück
The origin of hip hop hitting the mainstream and the accidental birth of nu metal 10 years later, what's not to love?
Pioneers of RAP. Had this on cassette back in then!!
The original, classic and groundbreaking album that paved the way for future generations.
Classic rap album. The launch of rock/rap.
lyrics a little meh but i like the overall feel of the album. a little juvenile but fun
Nice classic
I actually enjoyed that album, much to my surprise
Nothing like anything I normally listen to but there were several iconic songs on here and I had a lot of fun listening to them :) considering giving this a 5 but there were also some songs I wanted to be over quicker so alas it's a 4 today
This was fun never bored also wild that hiphop used to be this. I like there's a whole song about shoes.
Epochal, transformative records that brought hip hop and rock together in a way that is still relevant today, with timeless tracks like It's Tricky, You Be Illin and of course Walk This Way. Four stars because there is some filler alongside those classics.
This has one of the greatest album openings ever, four back to back bangers. This album will always be deserving of its claims due to that reason. Apart from this beginning section it did fall off a little towards the end but regardless the classic hiphop beats and the samples were class.
Classic hip-hop by some of the kings of the genre. The title track is a cool sister piece to Rock Box from their debut album
The first 4 tracks are so strong that the rest of the album suffers in comparison.
You'll be Illin - снос башни, моментально добавлено себе в плейлист. Но вынужден меня извинить, ну не пять это для меня. Но очень достойно.
90s hip hop was more my jam but this still slaps
Very entertaining hip hop.
Es un puñetazo de energía, buenrrollismo asegurado
From the golden age of hip hop. Still holds up to this day. Plenty of solid songs on this album, but there are a few meh songs, so it gets 4/5 stars.
Nicer Klassiker
Run DMC are such good friends they even finish each others’ sentences! This is a very fun listen. Certainly not one of the all-time best in the genre but absolutely solid. I was very impressed by how effective the sparse arrangements were. Outside of a few tracks, a lot of songs only had a drum part forming the beat (in stark contrast to something like Fear Of A Black Planet which had layers upon layers in the mix). They really embrace the Rock influence, with these simple but reverb-heavy drum parts sounding like they were lifted from stadium-filling Hair Metal tracks. So yeah, great fun. I ended up fairly surprised by how many tracks I had saved to relisten to by the end. Top tracks: It’s Tricky, Walk This Way, Hit It Run, Raising Hell, You Be Illin’
Tricky
Won’t say this is Perfection, but it’s decent. It’s Tricky to describe.
Popular songs good, rest pretty samesy but it works
I can hear the influence this album had on other artists I love. I assume this was an instant classic when it dropped in 1986.
Catchy
Old skool hip hop is my jam. I didn't list much back then, but it was always around. Reminds me of a simpler time. Also, a more tolerable way to listen to one Aerosmith track.
With this record, I can begin to see the way in which Run-D.M.C. influenced the future of hip hop. The flows are inventive and start to break out of the early 80s talky style, a little. However, this particular still style feels a little one-note compared to my other favourites to follow. The production is minimal and sharp (thanks Rick Rubin!) but I think the drum treatment wears a little thin as the album runs on. Worthy addition to this list at any rate! Rating: 3.5/5 Favourite songs: Proud to Be Black, It's Tricky, Is It Live, Peter Piper
Nostalgic, reminds me of music my mom grew up with and shared later solid 8/10 for me, 10/10 for 80s hip hop
Such an amazing record. Pretty crazy it's the first hip hop record to go platinum. I've enjoyed this one since I was a kid. I love the rock samples and the rock fusion. It seems like this was a major inspiration to subsequent artists. I wonder if they were thinking that they were being innovative when they made this record or if they were just having fun.
Listening to a 40 year old hip hop record, I find it hard to not feel like I'm listening to a meme of hip-hop. In certain songs, I half expect Andy Samberg to drop in and start rapping about something silly. Which I guess is the legacy to how successful and how big of an impact this record and band had on modern music. A few things stand out to me: fusion, humor, attitude. The obvious fusion is how they combined 80's hard rock into hip-hop. This is most overt with songs like "Walk this Way" and "Raising Hell." However, what impresses me the most is how they take that music and own it entirely. Even claiming they are the Kings of Rock in "Hit It Run." The boldness and attitude towards mainstream music is so palpable. Its hard to imagine that this didn't inspire other NYC rappers like Jay-Z and Nas. This is especially prominent in songs like "Proud to be Black" and "Is It Live." Beyond the attitude, they really just sound like they're having fun, and never take themselves too seriously. Especially in songs like "You Be Illin'" and "Peter Piper ", and "It's Tricky." It's a breath of fresh air, which is probably why a 40 year old hip-hop can still feel fresh.
Heel goed begin, later wat repetetief.
First song is my fave. I have seen them two times more than Dad!
Fantastic! So many memories of this being my first exposure to rap. My friend Sean dubbed Aerosmith’s Permanent Vacation and then this album on the other side. It’s tricky based on My Sharona is so good! Rap and Hip-Hop becomes much more complex, but this is the foundation. ****
Fun first choice
It's like one long song. But it's history, of course.
Absolute bangers from start to finish.
Peter Piper - 9.2 - love the triangle (?) and t e theme of children's stories is so interesting. It's Tricky - 9.0 - great chorus, unfortunately I've heard it so much before. My Adidas - 8.6 - Sounds like the best ad I've ever heard. Walk This Way (feat. Aerosmith) - 9.8 - incredible cover. Is It Live - 8.5 - best lyrics yet, or close. like the cowbell. Last line is fucked. Perfection - 6.8 - slow. J sounds dumb. Hit It Run - 7.2 - beatboxing sounds bad. DMC sounds good though. Raising Hell - 9.0 - love the electric guitar in the background You Be Illin' - 7.4 - funny but very aged. Dumb Girl - 7.1 - not as misogynistic as I thought it was gonna be. Son Of Byford - 7.0 - just a 30 second recording of a part of Hit It Run?? Proud to Be Black - 7.8 - flow is kinda weird. probably a great message for 1986 though
While Run DMC lay the foundations for hip-hop in this album, it slowly tapers off and becomes weaker near the end. This is not their fault considering how amazing the first four tracks are. This album is a great introductory to the beginnings of hip hop, the rhyme schemes, and how it evolved over time (into more socially conscious rap and gangsta rap too). 3.5/5
7.5/10
Ah, Eighties RAP, very nice.
Ahhh it's tricky! (quite literally). Einsiits halt richtigi banger druf Anderersiits würdi mir da halt nid uf enere regular basis geh. Drum stabili 4.1/5 Grüsse gehen raus Tony-p woni gester im Exil ha derfe treffe :D
Oh nice! Old school hip-hop. Freue mich. Stabils album

Awesome old school hip-hop with a hint of rock rap. It takes me back to growing up and trying to branch out into different genres. Lyrically pretty simple, but an overall awesome album.

Just good fun.
Like Beastie Boys better. They should have been called White DMC as they clearly were influenced by This album. Great at the time but most didn’t age well.
ITS TRICKYY TO ROCK A RHYME THATS ROGHT ON TIME ITS TRICKYYY
This is some serious gourmet shit! Ca ambiance mon iPod depuis SSX Tricky (les vrais savent)
Hip hop urtekst. It's Tricky er bare limericks 😭😭 klassiker!! Jeg er nok lidt mere glad for Tougher Than Leather når alt kommer til alt
Svedig banger-rade!
It’s a classic bop. Simple, energetic, raw, fun energy. Can be repetitive at times but with the context of being early hip-hop and this bringing hip-hop main stream I’ll overlook musical simplicity.
Some solid old school hip hop here. Yeah it's a tad dated but this still cooks.
Good, clean Rap. Nice old school PG rap
Takes me right back to high school when I was all over this. Still holds up! I rank this album second amongst their titanic first three releases with their iconic self-titled first release just a touch better. You have a lot of the developing blueprint of both underground and pop-rap established right here: the different but complimentary flows of Run and DMC, hard-hitting beats from Jay, mixing in a sprinkle of rock stylings and you get a rap album that was accessible for the masses and still had street cred. Fun stuff. And great to revisit; it’d been awhile.
Hip hip hop Hooray
Great album. Opening 4 tracks are fire as the kids say.
Great hip-hop album. Perfect combination of rock and hip-hop in a few songs. 8/10
4. Not my favourite but I can respect it. It's pretty good
There are some absolute classic songs on this album. In many ways this was one of the moments that paved the way for raps dominance. That said, this album has not aged well. Many of the songs that broke ground don't really sound that good anymore. Walk this way is still a bop. 4/5
Classic
iconic!
Deez ni gguhs mad!
Walk this way might be the best well known track, but Tricky is by far the best
Fantastic album. Lyrics are dated but it still holds up.
A refreshing change of genre. So good.
Not a bad hip-hop album. Learned it was one of the most influential hip-hop albums of all time. Never really listened to early hip-hop from this era. Overall, I liked a few songs and would recommend! Favorite Song(s): "It's Tricky", "Walk This Way", "Raising Hell", "You Be Illin'"
One of my old managers probably knows every word to this
“Raising Hell” may have done more than any other album to push hip hop into the mainstream. How much of that was the Aerosmith collaboration? Run-D.M.C. was mixing rock elements into their sound from the start, but it wasn’t until their third album here that they got the big breakthrough. Like with that self-titled debut, there are some terrific sounds, samples, beats, and melding of styles. But also like that debut, the flow of the rapping is what holds it back. The chanted style can work well in small amounts, but does get tiring over the long run.
They knocked it out of the park and revolutionized a genre at the same time. Historical 5. Personal 4. It’s a great album that deserves to be in the various lists of greatest albums of all-time.
Pretty fun actually. Didn’t hate it at all. 4 of 5
Rating: 7.5/10 Very good album overall. Really enjoyed the sample-based production (which was probably groundbreaking for 1986) and the interplay between the rappers. A lot of these songs are just really fun to listen to, don't think they're saying anything meaningful lyrically, sounds like they're just having fun. The album sounds outdated from the production to the rapping but it's still fun to listen to, I definitely understood why it was so influential to this time period. Favorite songs: Peter Piper, It's Tricky, Walk This Way, It Is Live, You Be Illin'. Worst Songs: Perfection, Hit It Run.
No time to review properly, just want the next album. Goes without saying; a classic.
I usually only give 4s to albums I'll listen to again. I don't particularly like this, but I cannot deny its cultural impact and the influence it had at the time of release, so there you go.
RUNS HOUSE
Ah such a good album, so many songs sampled throughout the years. Drums, beats are A+.
I remember this from around the time it came out. Not my thing, but electrifying at the time. Still a great listen!
-beatbox -influential on the future of rap and hip-hop -drum and cymbal beats -some of the beats seemed repetitive, but good -electric guitar -record scratching -humorous -political and historical -fun and raucous -over too soon
4/5 Damn dude that was enjoyable as hell Best track: Peter Piper
I love this era of hip hop where everything was so fresh and cool. A ton of fun from front to back.
Absolutely unreal first half and last track finishes it off on a high point. It's clear to see how this influences and leads the way However it should be remembered Steven Tyler should be in jail and for that reason it can't be 5 stars
Really enjoyed this. Couple of songs added to the playlist.
Dope
Classic old-school hip hop.
This was a blast from the past, there's a lot more sampling of other hit songs that I remembered when I listen to it a long time ago. Clearly influential, because some songs sound like other artists that came later.
You can tell they were having a blast recording this. Invented rap rock and still did it better than just about anyone who came after. I love the old school trading lines flow. Perfection is the only song that dragged for me. You can hear the 1,001 hip hop memes in this album, it's obvious why it's on the list.
old school hiphop with strong DJ elements and some rock influence
The self-titled kings of “Rap and Roll,” Run - D.M.C. is credited with pioneering new-school hip hop. An incredible album which brought diverse peoples together through their fusion of genres. By combining electric guitar riffs and rock drum kit rhythms with record scratching, sampling, and their funky fresh lyrics, Run - D.M.C. created a new sound which brought together lovers of rock, rap, and hip hop. They broke color barriers with Proud to be Black and Walk This Way with Aerosmith. Of note, there is something adorable about grown men rhyming in unison.
Szex
Awesome
Funky and original
Classic hip-hop
Man this was cool to listen to. I have a weird perspective cause I got into rap like 2014 (to pimp a butterfly was my intro) so to hear an OG album like this was cool. It’s pretty wild they can do pretty much the same flow every song and it work. Loved a lot of these tracks. It was interesting to hear songs like perfection and dumb girl where it’s literally just like drums and vocals. Production wise, a lot of this still holds up!! Very pleasing to listen to as a whole
Classic
Essential Tracks: It’s Tricky (Playlist) Walk This Way
Pretty good for the era. Timeless

Banger album, hvertfall Aerosmith collaben 4.5
Very enjoyable. I don't listen to much rap but this is very good.
Why didn’t I know about this back in the day. Kicks ass top to bottom. Taking away one star for the inclusion of Stephen Tyler
Album 198 of 1001 Run-D.M.C. - Raising Hell Rating : 4 / 5 Favorite Tracks : Walk This Way Good listen. Enjoyed much more than I expected. Considered a classic by many. I can see that.
👍🏼
A forgotten classic! Lot's of good songs. Probably good to listen to with Riker at some point relatively soon (explicit lyrics only in the last few songs).
cool, but too abrasive for my mood most of the time
This is a hip hop classic for sure. I'm a big fan of the genre and I think it has evolved in a lot of ways since the early to mid 80s when it was in its infancy. I tend to agree with the conventional hip hop enthusiast's position that the 90s was the golden age, but there is some great stuff from this period and certainly from the recent past and present. The slow jam style of rapping that this early dynamic duo engages in on some of the tracks definitely feels a little rickety and unsophisticated at times, but there are some total bangers here and some other very good tracks that make this album essential listening for anyone that really appreciates hip hop. Not quite Illmatic or The Chronic, but very very good nonetheless.
The classic offering from Run D.M.C., including the important Walk This Way track with Aerosmith, which really bridged the gap between rap and rock and roll. Brought a lot of new fans to them, myself included. It's Tricky, though, is probably the highlight of the album.
Great Group Dynamic with so many classic songs. Ver instrumental rap
Banging old school classic - holds up awesomely.
Amazing, knew a lot of songs already.
