Reviews (page 7 of 13)
Great album, but The Queen Is Dead will always be my favorite.
Such an easy listen. This really is an album experience from Moz and the boys. Girlfriend in a Coma is a highlight. Loved this one.
Marr and Morrissey work together beautifully on this record, 4/5 Highlight- "Death of a Disco Dancer"
It's like they grew up and saved the best album till last. Marr took them in a new direction and the result is a more mature sound than their first albums
Love The Smiths. The latter part of the album is not my favorite, but the rest more then makes up for it. Great album to go out on.. 4/5
Fucking loved it but not all time
Good...probably had only ever heard Girlfriend In a Coma before Influenced Radiohead? Liked "Unhappy Birthday" song
<3<3<3 ikkje da besta smiths albumet då
Awesome!
Morrissey is a twat
They started something. Still hate his voice.
Some iffy shmeh songs, but I can't not like the smiths 😔
Morrissey is an asshole but I love The Smiths
No bangers but I’d like to revisit this album. Good sound
queen is dead is a lot better half of this album are mid 7/10
Surprised by this one. Actually really enjoyed this album. Had never listened to The Smiths previously.
Brilliant. 4.5/5 This is an album that I am very glad I heard before I die. Outstanding! Every song is amazing.
This was good, if a bit wistful and short.
highlights: - a rrrrush and a push and the land is ours - stop me if you think you've heard this one before - i started something i couldn't finish least favs: none really first half is a banger
Sort of wish the rating system on here allowed for half stars. This album is right in that 4.5 zone. It isn't quite a five but it's very close. So I guess I am just going to give it a 4. But it's a bit better than that.
The Smiths are in that weird range of post punk and pre 90s grunge. By the time this album came out they were already an established band and the album really reflects the sound of that time. I enjoyed the album a lot and found it be something I could easily come back to. Of course, I would need a pack of smokes and a leather jacket but I can do that.
This was a fun listen! I can hear so many influences for current bands like The Decemberists and so many others. A good number of the songs jumped out to me and were super enjoyable. I’ll come back this in the future for sure.
I liked this album. The smiths have a great sound and the leads voice is so soothing to me. Unhappy birthday is hilarious to me.
Solid British pop/rock album. Definitely a root album for early Radiohead style songs
A really enjoyable batch of songs. Not quite as great as their best albums but it does have some classic tracks on it like “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before” and the record industry takedown “Paint a Vulgar Picture.” I also really like the glistening closing track “I Won’t Share You.”
Nice dynamic album. I like the arrangements and I think it's overall a nice record to put on and listen through in one sitting. There's some fun production elements here too- like "Death of a Disco Dancer" has some fun little guitar SFX type of plucks happening. I can't say enough about how much I enjoy the pacing. There's such a good mix of songs on the album and it all flows really nicely.
I love the outright depressing nature of the lyrics, and can appreciate the singers voice when he isn't growling.
4.25
Very enjoyable listen.
Did not now this record but there are, as expected, interesting lyrics and excellent rhythms and timbres.
Wow, great album that surprised me because I didn't think I enjoyed The Smiths this much. Too bad Morrisey is such an asshole.
A great example of their unique , somber pop.
Awesome album! If you like getting lost in someone else’s thoughts about mediocrity, commonality, love, feeling stuck, etc… then this will be a good listen. I would also add, the backing piano, guitar, etc. remind me off a more decadent version of Bon Iver’s For Emma, Forever Ago.
I'm familiar with The Smiths, although I have not heard this album before. I'm already a fan of their music, so I expected to like this. I actually like this one quite a bit, but I need to get more familiar with it. It's pretty solid! I do enjoy the first half a lot more than the second half, though.
I came late to The Smiths party, and I arrived there because of Argentinean hardcore vocalist Boom Boom Kid, who knowingly was influenced by Morrissey in more than one aspect. But I really never got them. Not their music at least. I was rather fascinated by their image: Morrissey and Johnny Marr looked like two smartasses, the classic odd couple fed by a special chemistry, some apparent awkward dynamics, an appropriate update of the Jack Kerouac & Neil Cassidy myth adapted for their specific historical context. If anything, I can't help but admiring them for this aura that they projected around themselves. But then from time to time I played this and some of their other records, and I am always surprised to find something that comes up as compelling. Death Of A Disco Dancer with strings and keys, the reggae-like groove in A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours and Girlfriend In A Coma (is that a consequence of the double decker bus crash?), the joyful Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before (what with the extremely long titles?), the dramatic Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me. It is a fairly consistent album for being one from a band that at the time was on the brink of collapse. Some trivia: Strangeways is a Manchester's prison, and the character portrayed in the artwork is Richard Avalos in a shot from the movie East Of Eden. Whatever it all means!
Pretty great. But, Morrissy's voice can get annoying after a while. I still like it though! Standouts: Girlfriend in a Coma. Unhappy Birthday, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before. Others: I Started Something I Couldn't Finish. Death of a Disco Dancer, I won't Share You. I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday Cause you're evil And you lie And if you should die I may feel slightly sad (But I won't cry) Brutal... :) Love it. 4/5
Love the smiths, never heard this before. Death of a disco dancer is near perfect
A suitable swan song, as well as a great example as to why no album should be over 40 minutes long. Especially from a band fronted by Morrissey. But a solid benefit of a 34 minute run time is affording one time for an immediate re-listen to make sure it was good as the first time. The re-listen confirmed (to me, at least) that Morrissey clearly murdered that girlfriend who was in a coma.
Pretty good again! Weird to have two Smiths albums in one week
I've really been missing out on the Smiths! Great album! A couple of strange tracks for sure (girlfriend in a coma is very serious), but I loved the feel and composition of the album.
I got this album when it came it out, remembering liking it but honestly haven't come back to it much. I have usually gone to the other earlier Smiths' albums. Listening to it now, I'm not sure why; this album has a lot of variety, a lot of familiar songs and is solid throughout. It also may be their best produced album. It sounds great. Five of these ten songs were played pretty heavily on the radio, at least on Indie stations, and to some extent you still hear them. The first song, "A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours", has no guitar, only piano...the direction Johnny Marr wanted to take the band. The second song "I Started Something that I Couldn't Finish" is brilliant guitar and one of their best sounding pop songs. Of course, this album is loaded with morbid titled songs, one of the things I admire about The Smith's: "Unhappy Birthday", "Death of a Disco Dancer", "Death at One's Elbow" and of course, "Girlfriend in a Coma". He could have murder her and now he's hoping her through a coma. Along with Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women #12 and #45", one of the best songs where happy music is placed alongside bitter or depressing lyrics. The Smith's and Morrissey have a few of those. Really, no dead weight on the album. Clocking in at 36 minutes, it's a perfect length. This album is both Morrissey's and Johnny Marr's favorite Smiths' album; I finally see why.
Well! I liked this more than I expected; perhaps my expectations were low? Aside from Morissey growling on track 2 (lol) I pretty much let the rest just wash over me and am now feeling properly clean and tidy. Listening to "Unhappy Birthday" for the 2nd time right now. Always a good sign!
I had never previously listened to The Smiths but will definitely pick up some more after this piece. Haunting vocals and lyrics, sense of story, amazing production, no weak tracks, understated rhythm etc. I'm conservative with my 5 star ratings, but this one comes darn close. Give me a couple of more goes at this album and band and I wouldn't be surprised if I listed it as a 5 star! I thank 1001albumsgenerator for this great suggestion.
Četvorka mi je zašto jer mi nije petica
Every Smiths album is new to this boy, and this is the third one so far. It's also the best. A fuller, deeper sound, but without any signs of fussiness. Morrisey's persona takes on new dimensions and he and Marr approach the themes in ways they weren't able to on the Queen is Dead or Meat is Murder. It's funnier than those, too. He does a couple of voices on tracks two and three that made me splutter. He also seems less personally implicated in the stories, so even when you get something as mordant as, "I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday / 'Cause you're evil / And you lie / And if you should die / I may feel slightly sad / But I won't cry", it's delivered with a degree of detachment. More than that, I can't say on one listen. But that one listen gave me a tonne of joy, so I'm going big on the rating.
The only other Smiths album I had listened to was The Queen Is Dead because I think I had seen it on a list of best British albums. Besides the title track I really couldn’t connect with that album. This one, upon listening to today I have heard a few times before. I did end up digging this one more. Paint A Vulgar Picture is really good.
Hadn't heard of this group before. Liked the album a lot. Could for sure see myself listening to this one again.
You know, we have to come to terms with the fact that The Smiths were a pop group. Literate and verbose for the genre, but still a pop group. And extremely good too. How can anyone hear "Stop Me" and not be lost forever? I don't know.
Different from erlier Smiths album. No worse for that though!
A solid album if a little front-loaded. Still contains some of their best songs.
Cool stuff. Was a fan.
Smiths in their golden era
death of a disco dancer is so good
Estilo típico de The Smiths. Ningún megahit. Un 4.
Never heard these guys before and was thoroughly entertained
Jai bien aime. 4
I didn't want to like this album, but it's very good, what can I say
Genre: Jangle Pop 4/5 Another band I’ve let sit by the wayside, but purely by accident, as I tend to listen to the same things over and over, lol. I’m very happy I finally listened to one of their albums! This is the kind of British, post-Beatles sound that I think is most akin to that era and, after reading that this is one of their *lesser* offerings, I’m now more excited than ever to continue listening to them. The three song run of Girlfriend in a Coma-Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before-Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me is a shining moment of the genre, and sits perfectly in the middle of this very, very good album. Certainly one to take repeated listens to. Very nice work from these Brits!
I'm bouncing between a 3 and a 4 here. Musically, the Smiths have always just been kinda okay for me. But, I'm a sucker for the "I sound happy but really these lyrics are pretty dark and morbid" vibe. That's really where the Smiths (or, more accurately, Morrisey) get me. I mean, "Girlfriend in a Coma" - c'mon. Dammit. 4.
3.5
Had low expectations, glad they were wrong! Pretty fun!
A side is fantastic B side less so Probably the worst Smiths album Still a fantastic album Favourite songs:Girlfriend In A Coma,Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me,I Won’t Share You Least favourite songs:Death At Ones Elbow, Paint A Vulgar Picture Album ranking:8.5/10
Good 80's tunes.
enjoyed it quite a bit
It's the Smith innit, they're great! Loved listening to this album again, a true classic which belongs on this list.
It's been a long time since I listened to this.
Has that beautiful melancholic tint that I love from The Smiths and is hard to find other bands that compare
Pleasant album. Bit weird lyrics sometimes. Would listen again.
More enjoyable than the previous The Smiths album I got on this list. Catchy songs, including of course the well-known 'Stop me...'.
Great album, love the smiths
a great album for studying
Makes me feel cool
Yeah... it was really good. I always thought I hated The Smiths I was wrong. Less cure more the housemartins and really had that brit pop slow jam 90's thing. Excellent album. Only issue for that whole genre is everything kind of blends together but sill good.
Seemed charming for 80s heartfelt downer rock.
I really enjoyed this album. It will be getting a relisten.
It was pretty good! I wasn't a huge fan at first, but it got better, and by the middle of the album, it was solid. Still not 100% my genre, but pretty good.
I know rhee singer's toxic but great swansong by the Smiths
A British sound that I rather enjoyed. 0RS
This album kicks ass! Big fan of the themes, both lyrically and musically.
The worst of their albums but still really bloody good
Lovely stuff. Hits and glorious, unashamed album tracks from the kitchen-sink 80s of the Smiths coasting on a high. 4.5 stars, actually.
This was a fine album to close the Smith’s discography on. Personally I find it weaker than the other two Smiths albums represented in the book, but it’s still a great listen
begrudgingly a 4. Ugh, Morrisey, but it's a good Smiths album.
Loved, morrissey's lyrics fantastic and music good backing - death at ones elbow shakes the general mood up a bit
Final album. Apart from the singles, I know none of the other songs. I need to get into The Smiths more
Classic British Guitar pop. Pity Morrissey has turned into such a prick in later years.
Nice
Only really know the hits when it comes to The Smiths so was great listening to a full album of songs I didn't know. Great listen overall.
I love the smiths but cants stand Morissey
This album is kind of a shrewd collection that offers imitations of their other successes, but with the highest degree of refinement. (7/10) Favourite Tracks: Girlfriend in a Coma, Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me
hit and miss but would happily listen to again
Forse il miglior disco degli Smiths
I was thinking 3...but actually it is good. 4 for me. Shame morrisey is a tool.
Probably the weakest Smiths album, barely. But still very good. Second half is a little weak but the first half stands among their best. 8/10 1. A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours 2. Girlfriend in a Coma 3. Death of a Disco Dancer
No me gustó tanto.
Definitely top-three Smiths albums.
This scratches an itch better than The Queen Is Dead. It’s The Smiths how I like The Smiths.
Really enjoyed it, only the second Smiths album I've listened to after The Queen is Dead. Some brilliant lyrical highlights, arrangements all really solid, only a few songs outstay their welcome.
I like the Smiths but hadn’t heard this album in full. Really enjoyed it.
Favorite Tracks: Death of a Disco Dancer, Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me, I Won't Share You
Pretty good!
I landed Morrisey's first solo album 'Viva Hate' the other day and thought it was decent. Today I l got this, the Smiths last album which comfortably beats 'Viva Hate' on every count.
Already listened, as a huge Smiths fan I love this album even if it is my least favourite by them. 7/10
I really wish Morrissey wasn’t a shithead because this album rules
Not my favorite Smiths album, but I still like it.
Interesting to hear this album as it's the album of theirs I'm least familiar with. Wasn't absolutely blown away by it but it's still The Smiths so still excellent
It’s easy to see how they influenced future moody boys and their music. The lyrics are lovingly dark and sad, but it’s still an amazing record.
I always liked this Smiths album the best despite their relationship problems.
If you like this, wait until you listen to "The Queen is Dead".
Not my favorite Smiths album (that's reserved for their debut or Meat is Murder) but still a quite good one. The album has a really full sound and a good range. I don't need a second invite to give it another listen.
Very good, but like some of their other albums more.
Great album
Brilliant stuff
This was really fantastic and another signal (after Morrissey's Vauxall and I) that I need to listen to more of The Smiths.
We lost our notes for this one, sorry folks
We lost our notes for this one, sorry folks
Dat ene lied is cool en de rest ca va ja
Album with the longest song titles. Surprised I liked growling. Morrissey is a good lyricist and good at harmonies. Never noticed how much Smith’s is in early Radiohead. How many girlfriends does morrissey have buried at his summer cottage? Don’t usually like gimmicky songs, but the first song got me. #2 sounded like a bad dad band. #3 big Radiohead vibes. #4 meh. #5 is the banger, perfect balance, the one worth re-listen. #6 riot/soccer fans overlaid on whale sounds and piano turns into ballad. And the rest was not bad, but kind of spaced out. Josh Thoughts: Agreed with all the above. I've wager at least 5 girlfriends and boyfriends buried at his summer cottage. There were a couple fun jams, a lot of it sort of blended into the background--though I was pretty busy with work today so wasn't able to focus much on the music. Ashton: Track 1 cool reggae feel and "Feel Flows" swelling vocals. Track 2 "I started something I couldn't finish" is an accurate description of this 1001 albums exercise. GF in a coma and I know its serious is a lyric I've always loved and still makes me giggle. Big drama songs "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me". Some light grooves with harsh lyrics "Unhappy Birthday". Trouble connecting wiht Morrissey's dark-ironic-but-also-honest lyrics. So much talk of death and dying (heavy) contrasted with melodies and vocal delivery that floats and lilts delicately (light). Perhaps this contrast is what really connects with the Smiths-devoted? B-
not the best smiths but good
I liked it. Some really good songs.
Prima plaatje.
Lekker licht.
Goood
That album was swaggy. I give it two brad pitt's and two Angelina Jolie's!
Love it. I enjoy the vibe of emotionally complex eighties music. I was only ten when this album came out, and I like to think that I have matured some. But it still feels familiar
Bonus point for a birthday song to send to The Smiths loving lamb javelin.
A lowish 4 I think.
Love it! I don’t know why I’ve avoided the Smiths for so long.
4.4 - A beautifully flowing collection that plumbs some emotional depths to examine even ugly feelings like hatred, jealousy and envy. More approachable than "The Queen is Dead", attaining some highs but without quite the transcendence. I'll definitely be coming back to this one.
All these songs are catchy as heck. I don't know much about The Smiths, but I like this. I'm always down for catchy melodies with sad or strange lyrics. This album cover could have used some workshopping, though. Come on!
yoa no nice, aber nur einisch ghört ka
A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours is good
Not bad. Reminds me of the cure and that 80s style emo rock.
The punky side of synth and new wave. Loved it.
Actually really liked this. Funky style rock - 4/5
A very interesting album. It almost feels sentimental in a way. I enjoyed probably 40% of the songs on it. Overall, not a bad first to discover.
Enorm goede zweverige vibe, super goede stem en lekker wegluisteren
"Please the Press in Belgium!" in Paint a Vulgar Picture :D
Then this one came out later than I'd have expected. Nearly every song made a distinct impression.
It was ok, lacked the fun guitar riffs of other releases
Some interesting production lifts this album beyond just another Smiths album.
Liked it
Big Johnny Marr fan here. This Aussie gives it four bags of Cheezels out of five.
Good stuff. Classic
The smiths are timeless. I could listen to any of their albums any day of the week and feel all the same things I did the first time hearing them
Morrissey is a piece of shit, but I really enjoy the songs of The Smiths. The opening track was really intriguing, no guitar but oddly haunting. Thank God for Johnny Marr
Brilliant album. Very little filler
Very pleasant rock. Something different than usual!
strange album as the title indicates. lot of songs where the tone of the songs and the subject matter are starkly different. mostly this is happy sounding songs with titles like “unhappy birthday” and “girlfriend in a coma”. mostly though i’ll remember this album for how damn funny it is.
Fantastic- my first time hearing this album. Can't wait to listen again!
Love it! Gonna keep listening to their other shit
I have never heard this band before but it has a ska feel to it and I am a huge fan of ska.
I quite enjoyed this. I've long avoided The Smiths because Morrissey is a cunt, and I was a little young to appreciate them when they came out, but the album as a whole was very listenable.
I already liked a lot of these songs, but I also like the new ones. The first one is echoey and cool.
Good Album that is an all around great listen, not one song stands out but all of them combine for a joyful listening
I have heard the entire discography, and I really like it. Not love, but it's close.
k
A catchy ass smiths album, just like the previous three.
- Hey it’s The Smiths
Very enjoyable hit of melancholy rock
Well, that’s actually quite nice music. Three stars...
Good album, not their absolute best, but really good - a bit more expansive than their other stuff
This was pretty mediocre overall. "Girlfriend in a Coma" is great, creepy. It's "Every Breathe You Take" at the next level. Some of the guitar and keys work was next-level, but not enough to sustain my interest.
Good but nothing special, quite linear
3,7/5
Could be better considering its the smiths. solid 3.5

"Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before," but the Smiths have a distinctive and repetitive sound. This can lead some to start something that they couldn't finish. The Smiths did finish after this rush and a push; a death of a disco dancer (and an elbow). Between dreaming that somebody loves them, painting a vulgar picture, and not sharing, this album is still pretty good and short--it won't put any girlfriend in a coma. Top tracks: "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before," "Girlfriend in a Coma," "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish"
--A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours...interesting. there's a Romani(?) tinge to this --I Started Something I Couldn't Finish...compelling for its wordiness and off-kilter melodic delivery. but not something I'll come back to often --Death of a Disco Dancer...pleasant melody if a little lethargic. A surprisingly positive message from Moz. unless he's being sarcastic; always a possibility. nice piano/guitar outro --Girlfriend in a Coma...this one grabbed me. melodramatic as hell but Moz and Marr earn it --Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before...grew on me as it went on. lush --Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me...boring intro. Moz goes all out on this and it works most of the time --Unhappy Birthday...lyrics are a bit mean-spirited but Marr makes it something digestible and entertaining --Paint a Vulgar Picture...instruments are great, Moz (okay, I'll stop saying "Moz") actually gets in the way here --Death at One's Elbow...a fun dance groove! --I Won't Share You...delightful Morrissey crooning. he's a bastard but when he hits, he hits
Some of this wasn't too bad.I mean, not so much as I'd buy a copy, but easily their best on this list.
just not very memorable, honestly - thoughts might change upon relistening, but i generally just find myself not gravitating towards the smiths unfortunately. curious to hear other earlier albums, though.
I liked this a lot more than the other Smiths and Morrissey albums I’ve listened to so far (which actually isn’t saying much).
Meh
Was mid. Didn't love it, didn't hate it.
None of the hits were on this one but for a final album it was succinct yet great
Bad? No. Unmemorable? Yes
Their most tolerable album
Great The Smiths. Second album of theirs I’m getting on this list. Just can’t get excited but probably will find it okay anyway. Morrissey’s voice is distinct and sometimes that’s good and sometimes you’re sick of it. This is all fine. I like most of it, but nothing blows me away. I can see why people like The Smiths. They feel like a more defined version of a lot of the 80s post punk. It’s overall not my favorite genre and style but this is all pretty good. Seems like an ideal 3 for me. I would listen to a lot of this again in a playlist, but not sure it would be my choice to put on this album again. I think I like this more than the last Smiths album I heard, Meat is Murder.
Morissey meh in this one
I've always been in the "I appreciate what The Smiths do, but I don't love them" camp, and this album felt somewhat weak compared to others of theirs I've heard. Great lyricism from Morrissey as per, but I rarely latch onto music purely for the lyricism. Sonically, whilst decent enough, this failed to grab me really, and at times the vocals actually felt like more of a hindrance and mild source of irritation.
Kinda melancholic But it this specific album I like the way he rolls his “r”
Cool vibe. Liked the second half of the album more. Will need to listen again.
Good, but not the best I've heard from them in this list
I've been a bit harsh on the post-punk genre, but this one wasn't so bad. It also wasn't all that great. I would say they are substantially mid on this one.
A bit odd. Kind of sing-songy, but not objectionable. Just a little dull.
I’ve been trying to listen to more of The Smiths, so this album came at a good time. I can’t say it I enjoyed it as much as their other albums. I found the feeling to be maybe too cynical and moody, which definitely comes with the territory, but it was just more overbearing than usual. The music wasn’t as interesting to me as their other works. Girlfriend in a Coma is still one of my favorites from them though.
The better the music gets, the more racist Morrissey gets, and the sassier he is. There are many enjoyable songs on here with lots of humor that makes Morrissey’s whining slightly more tolerable than on Meat Is Murder. Girlfriend in a Comma is iconic and funny. I loved it on San Junipero. Last Night I dreamt is one of their most remarkable songs. —— Poem —— Could we not have done without you, followed by a question mark that I lost rolling my eyes backwards into my skull, the skull into which I wish to roll, past your button lusting punches, which have turned my tongue muscles sore. sore tongue muscles have now punched every last button of my skull’s prose through my eyes, a proclamation of sorts, you could have done without this, don't you now know, followed by a question mark now I hope.
The first half of this album is pretty great but I really didn't find much in the second half to celebrate. Several keepers on that first half. I was only familiar with A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours, but the run from Death of a Disco Dancer to Stop Me... is really good.
3/5 - Much prefer The Queen is Dead. Has a few hits and generally listenable for me.
This album was fine. I enjoyed it, but more as background music.
The Smiths is one of those bands you really have to be in the mood for. 3/5
5/10 First Smiths album, was pretty good but probably only one song I'll revisit.
Not the biggest Smiths fan, but found this to be a good listen. 3.3/5.
Insanely average album. Just 10 straight songs of meh. Specific rating - 3.0 Fav song - stop me if you thjnk you’ve heard this one before Least fav- unhappy birthday
I was delighted to get a Smiths album today, I've dabbled with them before but not really got into their albums. I'd say I enjoyed it ok, but nothing wonderful. No huge sparks, it was just fine. Many people hated this album when I read the reviews, that's not me on this occasion. Not really sure how it leaves me with The Smiths now. Guess I'll find out once I get the next one. I'll probably not relisten here for some time.
Get a different singer please. His "ooohs" had me cringing lol the instrumentals were awesome.
I'm tired of The Smiths. And Morrissey. 3.6
With the exception of the Queen is Dead, the Smiths compilations (Hatful and Bombs, in particular) were more essential to their greatness than the proper studio albums. This has some good songs mostly on side one, but "Stop Me" is the only one that feels like the Smiths. "Death at One's Elbow" sounds like a leftover from the first album. The rest points more to initial uneasy steps of Morrissey's impending solo career. "Last Night" wins a special prize for being their dreariest ballad and "Unhappy Birthday" for their most petulant line "Cuz you're evil and you lie, and should die".
The last gasp of the Smiths as a band. Did not need to be on the list when the far superior Meat is murder and Queen is dead are on the list, and the s/t debut is not.
Walking through a whimsical backcountry neighborhood in southeast Gloucestershire during the peak goth movement of the 1980s. Iconic and well known by many but not inherently the greatest walk out there. A walk you take maybe 5 times a year but never more. It’ll do though! Gonna say 6.84/10. Drink: a well done matcha with some English breakfast syrup mixed in to overpower the grass feel
Has the vocals/instrumentals that feels like you’re at a dive bar and they’re playing this on a vinyl
I enjoyed this much more than I wanted to. Andy Rourke’s sublime bass work deserves all five stars. The album deserves four, but I am deducting one star, because fuck you, Morrissey. In summary: Andy: perfect 5/7 score 🌟 Album: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Morrissey: 🚫
The Smiths' final album, considered by many to be their best, saw guitarist Johnny Marr leave the band just a couple of months before its release. The remaining members decided not to kick a dead cat, and the band peacefully disbanded. And that's a good thing, because in my opinion, there's very little left of The Smiths here. The musicians fell for the journalists' accusations of monotony, and instead threw in a bunch of new stuff. There's not much of Marr's signature guitar here, but there's a saxophone, strings, and even a drum machine (even though the band's drums had always sounded rather artificial). The songs are good, but they sound like a different band, except for Morrissey's melancholy lyrics and his voice, which are reminiscent of what's happening now. However, the album doesn't drag on; it's genuinely varied, and most importantly, the band knew when to call it a day.
The comments suggest in really supposed to hate the lead singer, but with no external context it was pretty good.
bence the smiths'in daha güzel albümleri var.... bu çok ben the smiths'im ve bilindik bi düzenim var onun dışına çıkmıcam albümü olmuş gibime geldi.
This is just ok. I usually like the smiths but this album wasn’t hitting for me.
I love a good melodramatic moment. Favorite- I Won't Share You
Geebus. How much Morrissey can one person take. Still prefer Smiths to any solo Morrissey.
it was nice
Mix of the Cure, Radiohead and the verve, with a hint of Muse and a little twin peaks soundtrack. Clearly sounds like the time it came out. Nothing special to me.
I'm comin around on the Smiths
Quintessential Smiths, er það ekki bara?
The Smiths can be so incredibly good and at the same time incredibly tiresome. Another album that I got bored with. The first half has some great tracks but after ‘Last night I Dreamed …’ it becomes one never ending dirge.
Ei herättänyt isoja tunteita. 2,5/5.
I’m not the biggest Smiths fan and consider this among their weaker albums. But the first half is strong and as usual it includes some great jangle pop highlights
Album #100, The Smiths, Strangeways, Here We Come, ⭐⭐⭐ The timeline of the life of The Smiths always freaks me out. This, their final album, was released just three and a half years after their debut. And what a discography they left behind. One of the best of the 80s, and for my money they’re one of the greatest bands of all time. I know there are other Smiths albums on the list, but this is a peculiar inclusion because I think it’s their weakest. I think if they had continued making music together, this probably would have been seen as more of a transitional album, and the next one would have been more cohesive and probably extremely strong. The band really expand their sound on this album. There are more effects and instrumentation throughout. Horn and string sections are used much more heavily, and there are more studio and FX tricks in play too. Morrissey, who by any metric is already a pretty eccentric singer, ups the eccentricity even further here. The grunting on I Started Something I Couldn’t Finish, for example. Some people can’t stand Morrissey, but I love him. I think he’s a genius lyricist with a completely one-of-a-kind delivery. But the real star of the band is Johnny Marr. I’ll save my full adoration for him for the other Smiths albums when they come up, but he’s my all-time favourite guitarist. The problem for me is that this is probably his least riff-oriented album, and because of that I rarely come back to it. Whereas their debut feels pretty timeless to me, this feels much more rooted in the 80s sonically. Especially on the bigger ballads like Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me. None of this is really a complaint though. My main issue is just that it lacks bangers. The other Smiths albums have amazing songs stacked on top of each other, whereas this one only has a handful of truly great tracks for me. Still, when it’s good, it’s The Smiths at their best. I’ve always loved Girlfriend in a Coma. I love how you can interpret that song in multiple ways. It can feel tender, melodramatic, or completely cruel depending on how you hear it. But I’ve always found the delivery of the line “I know, I know… it’s serious” genuinely hilarious. That song kind of sums up The Smiths perfectly for me, constantly balancing tragedy and comedy at the same time. And that’s 100 albums. Time’s absolutely flown by.
Muito bom
Nice and easy listening, however nothing revolutionary, and you have to really like his voice to enjoy the Smiths fully.
I'm not gaga for The Smiths but I don't mind them. Better than most 80's stuff on this list.
I already think Morrissey is awful at writing lyrics and melodies and they're making me listen to the WORST Smith's album first?!?!
Better than I thought
A fun album with a great walk through the Smiths capabilities
This was my first time listening to The Smiths, overall I thought it was a well-made album but I honestly thought I would enjoy it more. There was a couple songs that stood out on first listen but the rest didn't quite grab me. But I think it will be worth listening to again to see if I feel differently.
I thought the opening track was vintage Smiths, and then when I am expecting something novel, fresh, or original, it's just more Smiths. Which earns this a 3 star because I'll listen to a different Smiths album if I want the same old sound.
Solid, but a bit corny at times. Not my favorite of the smiths, but definitely has some good tracks Rating: 6.5/10 Favorite Song: girlfriend in a coma
I spent an hour crying in therapy this morning and then followed that up with this album, which is actually ideally how it's supposed to be listened to I think. I prefer The Smiths to Morrissey's solo work, but at the end of the day 3 albums by them is still too many. Not as good as The Queen is Dead, but definitely better than Meat is Murder.
Överteatrala "Last night.. " kanske funkar för en vilsen 16åring men inte för bihåleinflammerad 48åring, skivans tråkigaste låt , ja kanske Smiths tråkigaste låt faktiskt. Det är en skiva som inte känns färdigjobbad, som om man hann en sida innan bandet upplöstes och sket i vilket, kanske borde den aldrig släppts som album. Morrissey var väl redan i full färd med att färdigställa Viva hate!
Innehåller förvisso fullpoängaren Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me och Stop me if you think that you heard this one before. Men också lökiga baktaktspianolåtar som Girlfriend in a coma och inledande A rush…
Last night… är helt lysande. Antagligen Smiths bästa. I övrigt inte lika bra, men helt okej.
unremarkable rock
Call this 2.5 rounded up - it’s not my favorite Smiths album but there’s still some interesting stuff on here.
Yup pretty good stuff here from the Smiths. I am sorry it took longer than most to come around to it, but solid
There is far too much Morrissey on this list. Thankfully this is saved by Johnny Marr. What a dilemma. Should be 1 just for having Morrissey.
Luistert makkelijk weg
It was ok I like 2 songs
The last studio album by English band The Smiths, as much as I hate Morissey I always thought the smiths were one of the more influential bands of the 80s, but this final album is a mixed bag for me, the band made much more bold choices and there are points in this album that dont seem recognizable as the sound of the Smiths, and thats both in a positive and negative sense
I love the Smiths, but this isn’t their best. The beginning and end are ok and the middle is great but i think the album would be better with a strong beginning and end and a weak middle.
There’s some really really excellent stuff in here, but there’s also a lot of stuff which I just didn’t care for. I was disappointed since I love The Queen is Dead so much.
cool mais pas leur meilleure 3/-5
Eh not the best smiths album but it has good rythems but becomes repetitive
3.5/5 I like the album, I think it's definitely a very tight, well produced album that displays an increased range of instruments and stronger vocal work, giving it almost a more theatrical feel compared to the prior album, The Queen Is Dead. But I think in that expansion of sound and refinement in production, something had been lost, making Strangeways, Here We Come feel like a weaker entry in the discography compared to the prior mentioned album (and, to thus point the only other reference point I have familiarity with.) Maybe it was a result of inter-band conflict coming to a head, maybe it's the polishedness of it all. I'm not sure. But again, it's not a bad album, I enjoyed a good handful of songs as, ultimately, it's still The Smiths. I'm in love that signature Marr jangle & haunting Morrissey vocal work across the album. But I would likely throw the handful of standout tracks into digital playlists, but likely would reach for The Queen Is Dead to spin over this one. Favorite Track: "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before"
6/10 - the typical Smiths sound, can be left on shuffle and it's alright
i do not fw morrissey like that
Okay.
I find the Smiths like honey; fine for a taste but too much for a meal. What it lacks for me is some kind of release - a heavier or happier song. It almost happened with Death at One’s Elbow but that song was just not doing anything for me and it was too late anyway.
3.5
Good.
An album that’s almost exactly as old as I am, and just like me, it’s decent, but not the best (Smiths album). Favourite track: Girlfriend in a Coma
A couple of decent songs and a bit of trademark Morrissey humour but didn’t do that much for me as a whole.
I'm no where as near as big of a Smiths fan as this list, but I don't mind them. The first two tracks have a groove, are less boring than some of the Smiths' stuff. Third track has a certain vibe to it. At this point I'm kind of liking this album, it's on the level of Meat is Murder. The rest of the tracks aren't bad, but they kind of faded inot the background after a while and didn't make a huge impression on me. 3/5 overall.
I’m gonna start this off with the obligatory fuck Morrissey. This album lands in a weird middle area for me. It’s nothing incredible, but also not terrible? I will say, I don’t particularly understand the hate for Morrissey’s voice. He sounds fine to me on this record. Now, that’s also coming from someone who’s wildly inexperienced in The Smiths’ and Morrissey’s work, so take what I say with a grain of salt… Something that’s not a good sign is that it’s hard for me to pick out some standout tracks… Nothing was particularly amazing to me. After a while, it starts to sound pretty samey, which, in turn, makes it all relatively forgettable in the end. Will I return to it? … Uh… Maybe? I don’t know. I might spin a few songs again here and there, but it’s honestly not something I can see myself regularly coming back to. Favorite songs: A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours, Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before, Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me Honorable mention: Death at One’s Elbow (I’m on the fence about whether I like this one or not)
Where are the hits though? On the one hand, some gorgeous stuff here and a definite evolution of the sound that had powered them to stardom. On the other, that evolution means some of the magic is lost and it almost feels like they're trying too hard to leave their past behind. Certainly not the first band to fall into that trap and won't be the last. Most importantly of course, fuck off Morrissey.
It's rather good. I'm sorry for Johnny Marr, but it's hard for me to listen to even the best of Morrissey's lyrics now days.
Surprisingly good. I have been mostly bored with the smiths but this was fun.
not their most memorable? but still pleasureable
It's a bit forgetable, bavkground music that is fine
I always feel conflicted when it comes to The Smiths. Whilst I have always enjoyed their biggest hits with Morissey's iconic crooning and Johnny Marr's complex guitar playing, they've never been a group I've had interest in album wise. Listening to Strangeways We Come, I found apart from the opening track, the strongest songs to my ears were the singles. This only accounts for 50% of the album and whilst the rest are not horrendous, they ultimately feel forgettable.
Ok album. Not my fav list…
Another sizzlin' strip of bacon, dripping with that signature melancholy, but this time around the boys dabbed the grease a little. The result is an experience that feels like waking from an oppressive winter, flinging the bedroom window open and being met with fresh, crisp air and rejuvenating sunshine. Doesn't nibble my ear lobe like "The Queen is Dead", and small tinkering with their overall sound land hit-or-miss with me, but appreciate the attempts to develop further. Enjoyable listen!
That’s very odd that this album was chosen. I’m a huge Smith’s fan but the album is very inconsistent. There’s four or five good songs but that certainly does not mean it’s one of their best. That belongs to their title album and The Queen is Dead. Just because a band is good it doesn’t mean that all of their releases are worthy. I’m looking at you Radiohead and Led Zeppelin.
I found most of the songs to be nice but mostly unremarkable. A couple of the tracks in the middle of the album even caught my interest, but the first two tracks gave me a really bad first impression to The Smiths. I have never heard a real person growl when singing. I thought it was just a fun little thing VOCALOIDs could do sometimes, but I hope I never have to hear a human do that again. Favorite Song: Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before Least Favorite Song: A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours
***An ok album
Sad vibes but surprisingly good to clean the house to. 2.8/5.0
“It’s fine.” Represents the high water mark in my relationship with The Smiths so far. Maybe I’ll find one I actually like one day.
This is the palatable version of Morrissey. Thank you Johnny Marr.
I found the first 3 songs and the 5th really strong. The rest were middling at best. The great songs are just classic Smiths tunes and worthy of praise, but the 2nd half of the album was not up to par. Altogether, I am going to say 3 "less than impressed" stars, middling not stellar.
Highkey it was just ight, theres better but def not the worst thing in the world
One of the smiths weaker albums. I feel like this didn’t have the same pull as their more popular releases and no outstanding songs. The music was well made and decent but didn’t have that smiths appeal to them. Anyways still an above average project 6.7/10 3.3/5
intro chula disque unhappy birthday
Least favorite Smiths album. Just not as original as the others. Still, I really like Stop Me and Unhappy Birthday.
It was fine.
Morrissey is awful obviously (which was entirely unpredictable based on, you know, every song he ever wrote), and this is very much mid-tier Smiths. But... yeah... I still enjoyed it quite a bit!
Don't really care for Morrissey. The rest of the band is fine though.
Not exceptional but good smiths
Perus
*Nice sounding album, just nothing that wows me and I'm not a big Morrissey guy.
Must have been in a good mood today because not even Morrissey could ruin it. Not sure if it's genuinely the best Smiths album, but it's the one I've tolerated the easiest.
Its not the best Smiths album, quite a lot of it sounded very dull but it had some classic songs
I quite like the smiths however they have better albums and tracks this isn’t I feel is mid not bad but nothing special
