Morrissey is a putz

if you think peace is a common goal that goes to show how little you know

Pretty good, b teir

It's no The Queen is Dead, but still a good album. 4/5

What can I say - I like The Smiths. I appreciate the interesting lyrics where it’s hard to tell if they’re trolling or totally serious. I don’t know that it’s my favorite album of theirs, but really solid regardless. Favorite tracks: Unhappy Birthday, A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours, I Won’t Share You

This already sounds like every Smith song I’ve ever heard. I don’t know if it’s the voice or that they only have a couple melodies? Track two “I started something” is way better than the first track. That voice though. Struggling with it. This album gets better and the voice gets more tolerable as it goes. The bass lines in this are killer. Way better than it started.

I've really had enough of The Smiths, but this may be their best.

I was so late to the party with The Smiths. I had given their music many chances through my life and while I enjoyed what I heard, they just never stayed with me. It took a scene in the 2017 movie Bumblebee where a high school kid in the 80’s is jamming out to “Bigmouth Strikes Again” while getting ready for school for it to click. I was that kid at some point a long time ago but for me it was with 90’s music. That movie helped me to transpose that feeling down a decade I guess. Doesn’t hurt that it’s a pretty fun movie that captures the nostalgia of the 80’s really well. Anyways, given my somewhat new appreciation for The Smiths and the fact that Strangeways was their one album I never intently listened to, I was excited to give it a go. Immediately on the first listen I feel like this is The Smiths album I wish I would have started with all this time. All the elements that I’ve always known about this band are here but it seems like those elements are elevated to new height's and the mix sounds incredible. While none of the songs were recognizable to me the more I listen the more I feel like this album might be their best. Johnny Marr’s guitars were an expected stand out given his reputation as a inspiring musician and songwriter and he doesn’t disappoint on this album at all. I also feel like Morrissey’s hauntingly beautiful voice and quirky songwriting are in top form here. The dreamy opener “A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours” has a solid groove, some really cool marimba melodies, interesting keyboard parts along with Morrissey doing a little growl on the chorus. Marr breaks out the distortion on “I Started Something I couldn’t finish” and it sounds incredible! This song almost sounds like a Bowie tune at times. Morrissey’s piano freak out that flows into the drum room mics being cranked at 4:05 of “Death of a Disco Dancer” gave me immediate stank face once it all came together. “Girlfriend in a Coma” is the first song on this album that shows the another side of Marr’s guitar abilities. I love how the high end of the panned multitracked guitars really float above everything in the mix, almost gives them a harpsichord type feel. This approach continues on the next 3 songs, layered with various synths creating the depth of an ocean. “Death at One’s Elbow” is the only song that feels out of place with it’s country/western/rockabilly leanings. It’s still a great song just stylistically different from the rest of the album, but I don’t mind the variety. “I Won’t Share You” is the perfect choice for album closer. Multiple listens really peels back the subtle layers on this album and I feel like that’s where the appreciation of Johnny Marr’s musicianship really shows, at least for me. I’ll happily add this to my pile of new favorites. I give it a strong to quite strong 4.

Like Bono, I'm also a bit over "Morrissey: The Persona!!" Luckily, I'm an adult and can look past that and take the music at face value, as all music should be. There's a particular sound I associate with The Smiths--warm, lush, jangly, blue--that is certainly on display here, but I am surprised to hear them move those sounds to various styles of music such as the upbeat reggae of the opening track and the country-blues of "Death at One's Elbow." Three tracks in, "Death of a Disco Dancer" was the first song that really impressed me with its pseudo-psychedelia off-time guitar picking and experimental piano playing. I can hear traces of The Cure ("The Empty World," "End") and similarly can hear repeating chords as a solid groove instead of boring or uninspired. "Girlfriend In A Coma" is classic Smiths. Like a great Queen song, the melody is first established, and subsequent verses and choruses are elevated variations on that theme. Though this is somewhat "second verse same as the first," it also isn't at all. Along with "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before," "Unhappy Birthday," and "I Won't Share You," this song assists in leaning the album towards a soft and melancholic pop despite whatever other variations they employ. Wow! "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" is just the right playing, production, singing, chord structure, and lyrics all at once. It is cinematic, mature songwriting. Easily the highlight for me. "Paint a Vulger Picture" tells the Hollywood music executives' story of finding out their star/cash cow has died. A snide and heartless look at corporate business in general, it's an interesting story I haven't considered much before; though I found it hard to empathize with its elitist sentiment, like a song mourning the shrinkage of one's stock margins due to a bad acquisition. Morrissey is more a writer than a lyricist, shining most when completing a thoughtful paragraph in a verse rather than some repetitive phrase in a chorus. Truly, his verse is a verse. His delivery is smooth and effortless; he never dares to push his voice beyond a comfortable listening range. Every song isn't amazing, but there's not a miss on this album. Some songs in the YouTube playlist played alongside their corresponding videos, where Morrissey furrows his brow and plays schmaltzy for the camera, and I am reminded to turn away and just let the nice sounds wash over me.

Classic Morrissey, a detached, crooning baritone delivering clever, ironic lyrics like a sigh that's at turns bored, wry, wistful, and smirking. Classic Johnny Marr, taking a three-minute pop song to layered, mesmerizing, emotional, cinematic heights. All in all, a classic Smiths album, if you like that sort of thing. I do. Very British Moments: "The death of a disco dancer? Well I'd rather not get involved I never talk to my neighbour I'd rather not get involved" "And so I drank one It became four And when I fell on the floor I drank more"

Call me crazy, but I always preferred this record to The Queen Is Dead. I think there are a lot more impactful tracks overall here, especially on the first half. There's some killer guitar work, and ear catching melodies paired with that keep the listener invested.

The album started off strong and continued with that strength. The first two songs are definitely my favorites, but I also really enjoyed Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me.

Nice to hear early Smiths again.

A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours 3.7 I Started Something I Couldn't Finish 4.2 Death of a Disco Dancer 3.8 Girlfriend in a Coma 4 Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before 3.5 Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me 4.3 Unhappy Birthday 3.2 Paint a Vulgar Picture 3.5 Death at One's Elbow 3 I Won't Share You 3 Score: 3.62

The final album by The Smiths, and while I'm never bored by Marr, this one does indeed sound like a band in the middle of an identity crisis. Still good though!

Ok I'm beginning to get why some people love the Smiths.

I thought "Unhappy Birthday" was a fun song, something that I just wasn't expecting. I liked all of the song titles, they felt unique. "Death's Elbow" felt like a fun cowboy jaunt, which felt oddly fitting since I'm playing Red Dead Redemption 2 right now.

I come to wish you an unhappy birthday.

MUCH better than their previous album. Their darkly humorous lyrics were secondary to upbeat and unique music that kept my attention.

Another Smiths album I was happy to listen to.

Never really listened to The Smiths, always thought they were quite dreary but I really enjoy this actually. 8.1/10 for now

Lovely sound with some particular songs that really spoke to me. Overall, a little samey across the board in terms of tone.

this was class again, who knew I was a Smiths fan

not my favourite smiths, feels v short and some of the songs rly pass you by. still great though

Not their best album.

I am partial to The Smith's although I did not listem to them much when they came out (odd...) Anyway - a good album with their more polished recordings

I loved a few songs but I can never really get into the smiths I apologize for my discretions musical overlords

A few misses short of a 5, but awesome. I love the smiths!!!

Comunque super bello, dinamico e orecchiabile. Non ha influenzato il voto ma spendendo due parole sulla copertina: meh

This is a very good album - is it the best Smiths?

Banger. An amazing album from front to back. This is possibly one of my favorite albums of all time, and in my personal ranking of these albums so far, it’s a 93/100. Morrissey’s vocals complement the instrumentals so well, and he’s the king of ‘80s jangle. This albums deserves a 93/100, or a 4.65/5. Fav: “I Won’t Share You”, “Girlfriend in a Coma” Least Fav: None

Instrumentaal goed en erg muzikaal, maar niks springt er echt uit. Overall helemaal niets mis mee.

Was a fan from 84 - 86-ish, but I'd moved on a bit by 87 and didn't listen to this back then, although I remember the singles. As for the songs that were new to me, Morrissey's sad /funny /clever words and singing style no longer have the same impact at my advanced age, so I wasn't always engaged with what he was singing about. What hasn't worn off, though, is everything else. I still adore the sound of Marr, Rourke and Joyce. I like Stop Me. And even my wrinkly heart melted at Last Night. There were some gorgeous instrumental passages. In fact, if you just take the instruments, the Smiths' sound is sublime. I don't think they released a bad album, but I'll remain stuck in the past and say that I still prefer their first two. I wonder if they're on this list. Need a 7/10 but will round up.

Oh blimey listening to this. Manchester was so bleak in the 80s. It's hard to realise it now. A fellow uni student I knew was thrown out of the window from the top deck of a bus. Another mate had all his top front teeth punched out for him because he'd dared to stray away from student nights and had gone up to town on a Saturday night. I love that Johnny Marr still plays these tracks and Morrissey is surplus to requirements these days. "Girlfriend in a Coma" has always irritated me but I love "Stop me" which is brilliant live.

This was good

Ok fine the Smiths are good. I said it.

Liked it.

1987. Really , how quickly time has passed. Still a good album

Never liked the Smiths. I liked this album.

Strange, but interesting. 4/5.

I’m going to sound like a broken record with all these Moz/Smiths albums, but it’s true. I do love this album, but the man’s awfulness knocks it down a star. There’s some great stuff on here, though. Sorry Johnny! Nothing personal.

This was a great album. There's something special about this Smiths I think that makes them completely relevant and great music for 2024, but also Somehow you feel like you're in a dorm room in 1985, and Morrissey is the only one who understands you.

Love some Johnny Marr guitar and Morrisey’s voice. Probably one of my favorite albums of theirs. There is something about the British story telling that the Smiths produce that is very melodic.

Very enjoyable 4. Really liked Morrissey’s voice and the juxtaposition of his floaty voice and happy feel to the song with the somber and macabre (at times) lyrics. Very much liked the guitar was great overall just very solid album.

Really enjoyed this album. Morrisey’s voice can take the serious lyrics but put a poppy twist on it. Enjoyed instruments & mix of sounds

I always thought I hated The Smiths, but found myself enjoying this.

I know it’s controversial now because of Morrissey’s words and actions. But I love The Smiths. This is no exception. However this isn’t my favourite album of theirs. Still solid. I can groove to it. But it doesn’t feature what I consider their absolute best. I still love it, though. 4/5

Very funky, very fun.

A couple of weak tracks (Paint a Vulgar Picture, I Won't Share You) near the end keep this album from being a 5.

I did not realize how polarizing the Smiths were! I liked this album. Great musicality.

I enjoyed it. It was good.

Really good, need to relisten.

Excellent arrangements and song structures. Textured and layered sounds. Really lovely listen. Very short album.

Try hard

Never heard of this group but I liked the music.

Girlfriend in the Coma and Last Night I dreamt my favorites

The biggest whinging Pom who ever whinging Pommed. Also very witty. And the smiths are a great band. Even if I’m a bit … suspicious of them. Steven can write lyrics, even if they do seem to moan and whinge. Marr is an excellent player and it’s a solid solid rhythm section. But, something about them irritates me. I’m sure that Manchester was quite miserable - try Dubbo NSW growing up. If I could afford a train ticket the most interesting place I could get to was Sydney. From Manchester a couple of hours on the train to London and then you have Europe. I prefer Springsteens epic vistas that cover economic and social oppression. But as I grow older though the smiths do make more sense. 3.5 rounded up.

Maybe it's the stockholm syndrome really taking full stride, but this didn't suck. Morrissey's voice is probably the least annoying here out of all the Smiths albums, even if it does still make me a little angry. There were some I hated, but it's a net positive in my brain. Favorites were Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me, and Death of a Disco Dancer

I really liked this. Super diverse instrumentation. A short and concise listen. Favorite songs were I Started Something I Couldn’t Finish, Girlfriend In A Coma, Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me, and Death At One’s Elbow.

Up there for the best Smiths album. The range of songwriting on here is fantastic and more expansive than anything the band had done previously. A fitting last album

last night i dreamt somebody love me is one of the best songs ever by the smiths it is my love my one and only if i could marry this song i would HOLY SHIIITTT IT HIIITSSSSSS the background oh my god this is literally on par with i know its over it is so beautiful I LOVE LAST NIGHT I DREAMT SOMEBODY LOVED ME OH YM GOD

Really interesting sounds

Never heard of these guys before. Rather liked them. The lyrics of Unhappy Birthday made me laugh

From the macabre to the comedic, this album makes the uncomfortable seem ordinary. A good listen.

Admittedly I am not a huge fan of the Smiths, but I did enjoy listening.

That was pretty good, rather mellow.

Good 80’s music album.

It doesn't quite have the highs or big tunes of The Queen is Dead but it's more consistent. And it is quintessential Smiths, even if Johnny Marr didn't want to have a jangly guitar sound all the time. Side one is great. A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours has what sounds like a jangly piano, and some powerful, guttural Morrissey vocals. I Started Something I Couldn't Finish has some strong guitar riffs, more guttural Morrissey, and perfectly clever/witty lyrics and delivery you come to expect from him - my favorite part being where/how he sings "And now 18 months hard labor seems...fair enough." Death of a Disco Dancer has some lyrics that seem to have a deeper meaning (like common folk want to live in bliss and not talk about controversy...but who do disco dancers represent?). It also starts with a neat sharp sound (piano keys?) and ends with some heavy drum work from Mike Joyce; really solid. Girlfriend in a Coma is my favorite - another quirky death song that sounds cheery given the poppy musical accompaniment. A classic Morrissey and Marr combo. Stop Me if You Think You've Heard This One Before sounds like soaring songs by The Smiths and yet there is something different and cool about it. I didn't love side two as much, though the opener Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me (except for the too long intro) was beautiful and despairing. Just wow. I Won't Share You was similar in its despair; not quite as good but solid. I find myself becoming a fan of The Smiths.

I get it now

For whatever reason, I liked this record well enough. Maybe because it's the one I'm least familiar with?

Excellent start, A rush and a push and the Land is Ours is awesome, excellent composition and lyrics. Kind of lost my interest in the middle, then came back strong with Paint a Vulgar Picture which is also strong lyrically

A Rush and a Push and The Land Is Ours - 8.5/10 I Started Something I Couldn’t Finish - 8/10 Death of a Disco Dancer - 8/10 Girlfriend in a Coma - 9/10 Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This Only - 8/10 Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody - 8/10 Unhappy Birthday - 8/10 Paint a Vulgar Picture - 8/10 Death at One’s Elbow- 7.5/10 I Won't Share You - 8/10 TOTAL - 81/100

ig: @musicwithnessa

I quite like their sound. I feel Morrissey has only one type of singing, but the instruments brought a good variety. There were some interesting choices in instruments used sometimes like a marimba.

Hey tghs was pretty good! Nice to hear something new that I enjoy

Love the smiths and the last one doesnt disappoint either

Es un buen disco de the smiths. No me escondo, me ha gustado. Lo volveré a escuchar.

Girlfriend in a coma; I know, I know, it's really serious. I love it! 😆

It tails off a little toward the end, but there are some really good songs early on.

There's a lot of Morrisey on this thing

Unhappy Birthday is really funny if you imagine it being written by an 11 y/o

I enjoyed this much more than I expected to, some moments of genuine beauty.

I thought this was a Morrisey solo record for a long time, it's not. It's fuckin dope.

I do like The Smiths. I was impressed how consistent Strangeways is in the quality and in maintaining a mood. The tracks easily fit together as a whole while still being distinguishable from one another. Compared to other albums by The Smiths’ Strangeways doesn't have as many individual stand-out tracks, but I could easily put the album on again for a re-listen. My favorite track may still be "Girlfriend in a Coma" because of the odd combination of morbid lyrics and a buoyant tune. I do have a harder time with the potential misogynistic view of the lyrics, but there are lot of lyrics from The Smiths that I just don't pay attention to. I'm not into being mopey, but I do like how the music comes together. "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish" and "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" were my next favorite tracks, and "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" approaches being only "okay".

This album feels like a really interesting bridge album. I can hear the echoes of the synth heavy British rockers like Sonic Youth and even a little bit of glam rock like The Cure. I can also see how the indie bands of the 90s like the Goo Goo Dolls and Gin Blossoms will build on this to make the iconic sounds of the late 90's to 2000's indie summer. I don't know how impressive of an album or a genre it is, but it sure does scratch that nostalgic itch.

The last "Smiths" album before the Morrisey and Marr egos butted heads sufficiently to put the last nail in the coffin for the Smiths. The album had some class track titles... quirky enough that you'd remember them, and the tracks themselves, showed more of the journey Morrisey was in, and where he would continue to grow post "The Smiths." I grew up with this music, and it brings back many happy memories, I really enjoyed this album today, have played it 3 times already.

Its ok.

I’d only listened to the Queen is dead (which I liked). This felt like a great progression. While Morrissey is a cunt, I can’t deny the Smiths were a great band

Solid. Johnny Marr is great, but Morissey can definitely suck a chode.

Definitely the weakest Smiths album. None of these songs really croon or grab like their other albums. Still pleasant.

Excellent, classic "the Smiths"

Already a fan of the Smiths - great album. Right up my alley, very similar to the Cure, chill melancholy sound with a sort of underwater/muted guitar tone & emo british guy vocals. I prefer the Cure but hey, memed rivalry aside, so far this is the best album in the list.

Very good album, I really like Morrisey's vocal on it, the music is entertaining, all around decent record. I was never a fan of The Smiths, but maybe I need to change that and listen to few more songs and albums. Very solid.

It’s much more experimental than the other smiths albums and I find that really good each song flows together beautifully and makes it easy to listen to for everyone

So lovely

Not bad.

I do love me some Smiths. But also v melancholic

The Smiths aren’t my usual brand of 80’s alt/new wave but this was nice. Every time I listen to Gorillaz’s The Now Now my mom thinks it’s Morrissey and I think I get why.

Really enjoyed this, and wish that there was enough there to give it a 5, but it didn't quite reach that level for me. Death of a Disco Dancer and Paint a Vulgar Picture were my faves from the set. Kind of a shame that this was the band's last hurrah, since it seems that they really hit a stride with these songs. Would have been interesting to see how they transformed into the 90s, and competed with the grunge movement and even the new wave of British sound.

This is a record that comes out late at the party when things get interesting. The melancholy lyrics are the calm seas that sit atop strong currents just hinting at the turmoil that lies beneath.

Love The Smiths melancholic and mildly depressing sound. Didn’t know any of these songs but I can dig it.

Melodic and melancholy, but also very well crafted.

It did not amazed me but i recognize its quality

especially the first part is just awesome, nice new find!

I ended up adding 2 songs to my main playlist Very nice "vibes" kind of album, I can see why one of the songs was featured on "Everything Is Emo" I think my fav was actually "I Won't Share You"

Really good consistent album by The Smiths. I own The Queen is Dead but have mixed feelings about that album even though everybody considers a masterpiece. It seems quite samey in parts and doesn't feel like there's ever a true exceptional moment on it. This one surprised me because it's a complete switch up in The Smiths sound, it's almost like they're embracing new ideas and Johnny Marr is finding new ways to express himself, and as a result you have some incredibly diverse tracks and what is a great package. Probably my favourite album that I've listened to in this list so far

Nice album

Interesting 280's song. Not sure how I missed this back in the day.

80s angst Smith’s world. Works for me.

Good album, but depressing lyrics.

Never heard of this group. Good clean British sound from the 80s Not sure I'd listen again, not my cup of tea🤪

Good Smiths album, knew what they were doing by this point. Stop me and Girlfriend the biggest and best songs

Ist zu wenig düster. Ich hätte stattdessen "The Queen ist dead" gewählt. Lässt sich trotzdem sehr gut hören.

Interesting one. I'm thinking about adding "Unhappy Birthday" to my playlist.

Solid music writing for its style. Good bass.

really good, forgot how much i liked them. saved almost all songs

A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours 2. I Started Something I Couldn't Finish 3. Death Of a Disco Dancer 6. Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me

Strangely strong strumming

Started out great, bored me a little by the middle and then turned around again. Loved some of the songs but wouldn’t buy the album, though. [0101/1001]

Given how many times I have listened to The Smiths self-titled debut in the past, it’s surprising to me that I had never once listened to this album…and after listening I’m disappointed I hadn’t done so sooner! This album is really really good from start to (almost) finish. While this album doesn’t contain any songs that reach the heights of some of their most famous tracks, (although “Stop Me If…” comes close), it does contain 8 excellent tracks, one right after the other, and 2 thankfully short ones at the end that really should have been left off. Johnny Marr’s guitar sounds as good as always, and Morrisey mostly stays away from the daft and pretentious lyrics and grating vocal stylings that can make him a difficult listen on other albums. A very pleasant surprise.

really freaking cool, and full of personality

- Great classic indie rock sound - Not as depressing as I thought it would be - Incredible vibe that was fun to listen to

- wow wasn’t expecting indie rock - love the guitars

It's The Smiths...again.

Five star band for sure, but not their best album. Probably their weakest, in fact. If this is the only Smiths album in this 1001 list then we have a problem. The Queen is Dead, man. The Queen is Dead.

I never liked the Smiths. I was a Cure fan, and in my rather partisan view of things, you could only chose one "side". As it turns out, I was right. Morrisey has increasingly shown himself to be a bit of a prick, whilst Robert Smith is still a cool dude. Back in the day though, the Smiths seemed to be on the side of the underdog. They make me think of young men in cardigans like Sean Hughes, or our friend Rich. I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Rick Astley and Blossoms tribute band to the Smiths shown on the BBC Glastonbury coverage, and there's always been a few songs I've liked, especially, How Soon Is Now, but other than that, I've stayed clear of them. So when it finally came to listening to a full Smiths album, I was rather annoyed to find that I liked it. I shan't be listening to it again though, for ideological reasons.

This was really very good. Mostly unfamiliar to me. Will listen again.

Good front to back

Pretty good

Sympa dans le genre guillerettement dépressif, comme toujours avec les Smiths. J'aime beaucoup Girlfriend in a coma, je découvrais les autres.

Great album, very classic rock, favorite so far death of a disco dancer

I'm not sure any band has better captured their own demise than The Smiths did here. Sonically, it feels like a perfect coda for one of the strongest 5(ish) year runs any band has ever had.

Favorite Tracks: Girlfriend in a Coma, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before

Banger from start to finish.

3.5/5. I have a soft spot for The Smiths as my Mum is a big fan. Enjoyable album

Track 1 is great

I like it better then the first one. This album is more fascinating

Not my personal favorite but it's still a good album. But I do love the smiths, but Morrissey is a cunt.

i hate how much i like the smiths. i actively avoid listening to them because every time i press play im charmed against my will. this is the worst thing thats ever happened to me fave: stop me if you've heard this one before

sorry for liking the damn smiths. it will happen again

It took me several days to review this because I was so pissed off about slipping and falling at the Herald Square station while listening to this that I refused to submit my review. But here it is: I enjoyed this album consistently but it never felt like there were any insane stand out tracks, unlike The Queen is Dead, which I believe was released the year before Strangeways. All the tracks were new to me, and I would listen to this album again (and I’d enjoy it!), but it also disappointed me in some ways. I consistently enjoyed the instrumentals as usual, but something about the sound mixing was a bit off on some of these. Good lyrics but nothing too life-changing. A low four stars. Really good: Death of a Disco Dancer (Bowie-esque in some ways?), Girlfriend in a Coma, Stop Me if You’ve Heard This One Before (dream-pop-y?!)

8/10 - I liked this album much, much more than I thought I would. It felt cohesive without being repetitive, and the length of the album was perfect. There weren’t any standouts on the album for me, though. Favorites, in no particular order - Unhappy Birthday Paint a Vulgar Picture Girlfriend in a Coma A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me

Morrissey is a problem, but this record is really good.

Suprisingly ok

Morrissey may be one of the easiest artists to poke fun at but I've always appreciated him. The musical work and lyrics are great and have depth. Big fan of the Smiths and this album. Not my favourite of theirs but a great final album.

I enjoyed this album much more than I thought I would. It has a good mix of songs- some are upbeat, “bouncy” and “poppy”, while others are slower and more melancholy, but the whole album has a fun vibe. I can see why this is a polarizing album and some people don’t like it, but overall I really enjoyed it.

Favorite Songs: Girlfriend in a Coma; Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me; Paint a Vulgar Picture The last album, really solid music and lyrics.

The Smiths were a great band, good album that i never heard before

Gode klassikere, men lidt for rocket til tider.

'Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me"

Liked girlfriend in a coma on first pass, good album but maybe not favorite smiths? More to come!

It's a good album but compared to the previously albums it's a bit more polished, a little less grit, feels more Morrissey and less Marr. I do love Girlfriend in a Coma though!

Not my favorite Smiths but there are no bad Smiths records. At least half the songs here are classic Morrissey and Marr collaborations but one can feel the tearing of the seams and the unraveling of the knit that made The Smiths beautiful.

This is the 3rd Smiths album we've done. Coma and Stop Me were the tracks that stood out to me. I'd listen to this after Queen but before Meat.

Very dope! Would recommend, feels more rocky

Its the best of their 4 albums. Many classics, a few gems. The first song is great. Some of the instrumentation is dated, sounds very 80s.

Cool early indie sound. Particularly like songs 3, 5, 6

Okay, easy listening with some more standout songs

Hard to split the man from his music.

Unhappy Birthday ♥️ Very cohesive, certainly sets a mood

Death of a Disco Dancer Unhappy Birthday

inesperadamente gostosinho

Ooo. That is good. This is the first album which has come up that I haven't heard already and want to re-listen.

Easy enough to listen to. Good album to have on at work.

First song very good, rest were so-so

Teenage fav

I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Listened to it twice. Started strong and ended strong. A little different from their other albums but I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

I won't share you

Rolling Stone said the record "stands as one of their best and most varied".[1] Slant Magazine listed the album at No. 69 on its list of "Best Albums of the 1980s", writing that "Whether or not Strangeways, Here We Come ended the Smiths' brief career with their best album has been the subject of considerable debate for nearly a quarter century, but it definitively stands as the band's most lush, richest work."

Meget godt album. Flere gode sange. Burde lytte til det igen

I’m usually not much for Morrissey but this was a pretty solid album! The back half especially was strong, I’d listen again

Excellent album, for whatever reason I’ve always listened to The Queen is Dead, haven’t really listened to this in entirety before.

2 smiths albums back to back? Truly blessed.

This is maybe my least favourite album in the Smiths' discography, but it's still a great listen. I've just never found the songs to be as memorable as those on other albums, outside of "Girlfriend in a Coma" and "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before", the latter of which I know best from Rock Band 3. Man, Rock Band 3 rules. And The Smiths rule. Except Morrissey, he's a shit.

Huge fan of The Smiths and they don’t have a bad album, though this has the weakest filler of any of their albums. The band likely were at their peak here, as they all claim, but only in terms of the arrangements which are slick and show great cohesion. The songwriting is poorer, but still an album I listen to a lot.

Banger after banger.

Pretty coo

A very solid Smiths album, not as good as their other three studio albums: it contains a couple of classic Smiths songs but most songs on SHWC are 4 star, and overall I would rate the album as 4 star (8/10) (and would not have included it on the list).

Not nearly as sparkling as The queen is dead but still very enjoyable.

Top album

I felt like I was listening to my own music and not an album from this list.

It is interesting to hear some of the origins of what would become 90s britpop.

For me, The Smiths are one of those bands that have amazing singles but no album that I enjoy from beginning to end. This album has one of my favourite The Smiths songs, Stop Me, and it shows all the characteristics that made the bands sound unique, however it’s not quite a 5/5 album in my opinion.

An interesting new discovery. Pleasant sounds with not-so-nice lyrics. The longer I listen to it, the more attractive it becomes.

Mozza is a big racist but this album is good

the smiths are only cool when i listen to them, whenever someone else enjoys them i instantly think less of them as a human being. not my favourite project of theirs. however some of their best songs are on this. fav songs: a rush and a push and the land is ours, i started something i couldnt finish, girlfriend in a coma, stop me if you think youve heard this one before, last night i dreamt that somebody loved me, i wont share you.

Was good, 4/5

Favourites: • Death of a Disco Dancer • Unhappy Birthday

I feel like with The Smiths you just need a good Best Of, but this is probably the album to go for if you could only have one

Paedophiles have more in common with crabs than humans. That's scientific fact. The Smiths are good. Morrissey is bad. Crabs.

This album still has the "Smiths"' vibe without including any of their greatest hits, and it is one of their best albums! Highlight the keyboard work here. It's impressive!

great album

only like 2 songs but they are good songs

Feel sick not giving a Smiths album 5/5 but it just doesnt quite reach the heights of their previous work

This is four for now, but I could easily see myself growing more fond of the tracks on here over time and wanting to give it a five. This was a pretty consistent album; I can't think of one song that wasn't at least enjoyable. My favourite songs were Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before and A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours.

Some great songs on here but it does tail off a bit towards the end

This is what I think of when I think of The Smiths

This is an album with two faces for sure. There is the Jangly pop with upbeat rhythms, hooks that make you wanna dance. And then there’s the more soft, somber side, beautiful songs with Morrissey wailing away. Great album! 8,5 out of 10

Never been a smiths fan, it's a good album tho, especially liked finding out that stop me was a cover version of one of their songs.

Great album, makes me wanna dance. But minus 1 star for morrissey.

Not my favourite collection of Smiths tracks, but there's still some goodns here. Another favourite of my dads, so I'm quite partial to these warbly jangly ditties. While their melancholy can be overwrought, it's also sometimes transcendent, and I think it reaches that a couple of times on this record. Morissey is a cunt. Three and a half Fave track: Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me

The Smiths can be a mixed bag, but for the most part made decent to great records. This was no outlier - one of their best albums with some unforgettable tracks. Good flow between tracks and solid playing and writing coming together in a short and sweet 36 minutes. Fave track: Paint a Vulgar Picture

Not their best, but still …

I really thought I wouldn’t like but I did

not bad, but fuck you morrissey!

Banger. Really enjoyed this, never listened to this band before. The dark and brooding vibe and lyrics are awesome. This dude really wants to kill women for some reason. It's interesting and it sounds great. Sometimes the singer takes a dump Score: 80 Art: 70

As someone new and with no attachment to this band, I really liked it. It's very dreary and depressing, but not dreadful.

"Chants Macabre".

i mean, it’s the smiths

In spite of the weaker lyricism, this record has the most sonic invention of the smiths records and is a very compelling depiction of a band breaking up and moving on.

A little underwhelmed: I saw The Smiths and I had a small celebration bc from what I have listened to I've really liked their band. This was disappointing as I expected slightly more from this album. Don't get me wrong it sounded nice but there were no stand out tracks and it all sounded like Morrisey singing over a slightly jangly guitar. Not bad by any means but not great either.

An obligatory "fuck Morissey" aside, I'm glad I'm older and less impressionable now than I was when I was a teenager, as I just KNOW I would have based my whole personality off of this music. I've always enjoyed what I've heard of The Smiths, and this album is no exception. There's something about Morissey's voice that's haunting yet soothing to listen to. Personal highlights include "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish", "Girlfriend In a Coma", and "Unhappy Birthday".

Where has this band been? Excellent album, I can hear the punk behind all of the synthy 80s layers

Strangeways, Here We Come is perhaps best exemplified in its title: strange. Strange in that this doesn't feel like a swan song from one of Manchester's all time greatest bands and more of a transitional effort that gathered up further more skills and sounds that would require them to move on from what made them exemplary. Consider the elegiac "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me", the countrified stomp and sway of "A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours" and "Girlfriend in a Coma", the dizzying piano backdrop of "Death of a Disco Dancer" and the rather soon-to-be ironic re-make/re-model takedown of "Paint a Vulgar Picture" and you'd get the gist of The Smiths looking towards what was next. Well, we never got that picture and perhaps it was for the best. Although the album lags towards the end, even the most forgettable Smith's material ranges better than most. A near-perfect swan song when it wasn't supposed to be. Favorites: A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours, I Started Something I Couldn't Finish, Death of a Disco Dancer, Girlfriend in a Coma, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before, Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me.

I’ve definitely warmed up to the smiths over the course of this album and have wanted to relisten to the Queen is dead but this is a whole different thing than most smiths music I’ve gotten. It feels more orchestral and less guitar focused than the other stuff. Even if I was never wowed or fully into it, I think this was the most interesting album of theirs I’ve gotten. Stop me… is my favorite.

Some of the best songwriting the band has produced. I know the band (and others) call this their best record, something about the production and instrumentation (particularly the use of drum machines and saxophone maybe?) really date the sound for me. Still, it's a great record, just not as great as The Queen is Dead, IMO.

The Smiths were a singles band. I'll fight anyone who says otherwise. That being said, this is as good an album as they ever made. The 2011 remaster cleans up a lot of the gunk from the original release.

Du tog sönder ingefäran… Förlåt Jag gillar jag gillar. Morrissey va på lite tiger humör i början, skön bas i ”Death of a Disco Dancer”. Gillar texten till ”Girlfriend in a Coma” sen är ju ”Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me” en riktigt bra låt. Jag gillade albumet också. Håller med om tiger! Vet inte om jag riktigt gillade det - jag har alltid älskat ”Girlfriend in a Coma” och ”I Won’t Share You”! Inte deras bästa album enligt mig dock.

The Smiths — it's even more complicated now. I'm likely to stan for Johnny Marr forever whereas Morrissey can stay in the toilet of his regrettable right wing nationalism. With that out of the way, this is among their best despite it being the end of The Smiths. It's not my favorite of which I rated five stars despite Morrissey's politics. I will again bracket Morrissey out of respect for Johnny Marr and the rest of the band. But this record only gets four stars.

I like the Smiths better than many here because I can see past Morrissey's wankery. The songwriting is great, the band was very tight and his voice just does it for me.

Some proper classics on this album. I have mad respect for The Smiths for making depressing and dismal lyrics sound fantastic

Sucker for these guys, every song is well thought out, unique and dat bass

I had heard some of The Smiths stuff before so although I don’t like Morrissey, for obvious reasons, I can’t deny The Smiths music really does have a hold on me in some way, it’s equally catchy and clever with some beauty to it, some elegance if you will, which might be down to the soft tone of Morrissey. So as expected I am a fan of this album for a number of reasons. Firstly, I want to point out how well the vocals and the instrumental are mixed with each other. Although Morrissey can hit those higher notes I like that he sits equal with the instrumental with a fairly relaxed tone instead so that the listener is equally exposed to all elements of the songs, this is especially seen on the opening track ‘A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours’ where you can hear the vocals go rough on the chorus without his voice being raised, a good example of not overdoing it on a song. Secondly, I want to point out the variety of songs we get in this album. There’s a couple of 5-6 minute songs here which allow for a slower instrumental and to really open the song up which I appreciate, a key example of this is from the 2 consecutive tracks ‘I Started Something I Couldn’t Finish’ and ‘Death of a Disco Dancer’ which although using similar instruments suit the lengths of each track well respectively. In addition to this is the mix of harsher and softer songs such as ‘Death at One’s Elbow’ and I Won’t Share You’, the former in which has some nice rock and roll guitar riffs mixed with some drums to create a faster paced song whereas the latter, the final song in which, opens up for the vocalist to sing more whilst being accompanied by an acoustic guitar, it’s a beautiful way to end the album. Finally, I’d like to point out 1 song in particular, ‘Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me’. This song is introduced with an interlude full of background crowd noise until the 2 minute mark where the vocals kick in with a slow drum and almost somber piano. It really creates an atmosphere of helplessness which builds for the rest of the song u til we reach a climax at the end where some high notes are hit. It’s truly a wonderful song and probably my favourite on the album. Overall, I really enjoyed this album, the vocals, the instrumentals all of it sounded lovely. There were some weaker cuts on the back end of the record that knock it down slightly for me but my point still holds as the sound of this album is just so pleasing, something I will be returning to. P.S. Jpegmafia - Veteran, track 16 4/5

This one is pretty good

The first album I've officially listened to on this list... and the first listen just flew by! Had to put on again and again... very cool.

Never heard this, really enjoyed and added to my library!

it's great! seems like a more cerebral, atmospheric, less rousing set of smiths songs

yk what this album is acc pretty good. I recognised like half the songs from Thomas learning them on the bass and guitar and there are some tunes. the intro track has mega racist / anti immigration vibes to it. I started something I could not finish, stop me if you've heard this one before, last night I dreamt someone loved me are all mega tunes. girlfriend in a coma also even if the lyrics are really strange.

actually good, why did they have to stop here :(

Fun songs

Morrissey sucks but The Smiths don't. Perfect sadboi music for the era.

A tremendous album. Funny, moving, and more than the sum of its parts. Their best

Yeah...so, The Smiths...again... Is there something distinctively different about this one? Ummm, I think so?? I guess it seemed a bit more upbeat/catchy, like my attention was a but less inclined to wander. Even so, I didn't really love the album. I would probably still rank it in the "well, at least I don't feel that I have to run out of the room screaming" category, but maybe on the upper end of that block.

Some people say: If you know one album by The Smiths you know basically every Smiths song. Parts of that are true but I think that's mainly because of Morrissey's voice. There is some great musicianship next to his vocal delivery and I think you can hear that on this LP. It is a great listen and maybe the one you need by this band.

the smits ,<3

Morussy

Very good

goddamn it morrisey

Fuck Morrissey! Ok that out of the way, I do fucking love The Smiths. It is a bit disappointing to me that their self titled never made the list, I do prefer it to this one. I'm still giving this a 4 though because it is still so good. "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" is my favorite song on the album. "Girlfriend in a Coma" is also a good track and as a single guy getting this album on Valentine's Day it is a bit funny to listen to that song. And funny enough I listened to the album and The Queen Is Dead this past Thursday because I was craving some good Andy Rourke bass lines. They aren't the most impressive, but they are catchy and distinct.

i love the smiths I SAID I LOVE THE SIMTHS

A shame that Morrissey is such a cunt because this album is actually pretty good

Oh what to do about the Morrissey of it all? Love this album and think 5 stars right away but then I remember that Morrissey is a thing, this is always tough, separating the art from the artist. In the end this record is too good not to rate a 5, but fuck Morrissey!

Didn't really listen to the Smiths back in the day but there are some great tracks on here.

Admittedly, I'm not the biggest Smiths fan, but this album hooked me right away. Enjoyable to listen to, but a lot of it sounded pretty similar, so nothing really stuck out for me. Not a bad thing, as it was enjoyable enough for me to listen to again, but not 5 star material.

The Smiths хороши. Но мне больше по душе The Queen Is Dead.

Just great stuff. Love a lot of the composition, and Morrissey's got a terrific voice. I'm surprised how much I enjoyed this.

Not my favorite Smiths album but some great songs and more consistent end to end than The Queen is Dead. I get it Morissey is an asshole etc but he knows how to make indie rock music like few others.

Good stuff

Morrissey gör konstiga röster och Johnny Marrs gitarr är inte lika prevalent som på andra album men de e ändå ba banger efter banger

Great melodies, great lyrics. It's jangle pop with keyboards. The singer has a very distinct voice. Favorite song: Stop me if you think you heard this one before.

As much as I hate Morrissey, the lyrics and Johnny Marr make up for the hatred as the songs are alwasy good. Brilliant ideas that flow effortlessly amongst one another. Overall 8/10 cos its Morrissey.

I’m surprised how good this one was to be honest I thought it was meant to be some sorta flop for the smiths but the songs are very good, I’ll give it a 4/5 though because it’s very front loaded.

So OK, *The Queen Is Dead* is in my list of essential albums as well, there are so many great songs in it. But do we *really* need another record from The Smiths in said list? All the other LPs are clearly at least a notch under in term of overall quality: it's that sometimes annoying "affected" way that Morrissey sings those tunes. And the man has become such an egregious character today that, frankly, one wishes mentions of him should not exceed what is strictly necessary for the general purposes of such a list. Maybe we should leave some room for amazing artists that are also bright enough so as to *not* turn into complete twats as they get older. In that line of thought, I suddenly realize that I should now apply the exact same thing for Kanye West. Ouch, that's hard. I still feel *MBDTF* and *Yeezus* (along with one of the two first "Registration" albums, maybe) should be included in my list... So OK--given that The Smith have only released four "real" albums, I should at least include a second one by them. So let's dive into those 'Strangeways'... "I Started Something I Could Not Finish" is a nice tune, with a great chord progression and witty lyrics: "Death Of A Disco Dancer" is a mesmerizing atmospheric piece with an effective build-up; "Girl In A Coma" is nice little sardonic pop cut (amazing strings arrangements on this one): "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" is catchy as hell: "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" has another one of those terrific chord progressions (everyone raves about Johnny Marr's guitar playing, but he was great composer as well)... As for "Paint A Vulgar Picture", its ironic lyrics comparing a love affair to the shenanigans of the music industry haven't aged a day... Jeeze. I think I *really like* this record, actually. My first impulse was to say I wouldn't select *Strangeways, Here We Come* for my list and take the eponymous debut album instead. But I admit it, I'm hesitating now. And if I take this one as well, why leaving *Meat Is Murder* on the wayside? It's the patchiest affair in The Smiths' discography, but it still has some impressive cuts in it... Damn, I wish Morrissey wasn't such a a-hole today. I guess being a great artist doesn't necessarily prevent you from becoming a poor sod. And yet, I really *tried* not to "separate the man from the artist" here... Number of albums left to review or just listen to: less than 700, I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens:  approximately a half so far  Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter (including this one) Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter

Very nice

Love this one already! whopper.

Smiths are good nothing too crazy from this one but a solid album

Stop blubbering about Morrissey's political shenanigans, whatever they are. I rated The Blueprint the other day, and you didn't see me comment on Jay-Z's morally cringeworthy affinity for the dishonorable Louis Farrakhan, did you? Well, now you did. Rate what's here, and what's here is a nice 6.5/10. The Smiths always have a tasty vibe and beautiful sound.

Heard it before?: Yes Enjoy it?: I love it, you know what you’re getting with the smiths and they just never disappointed Favourite song: Track 8 - Paint A Vulgar Picture

Perhaps the most underrated Smiths album. Side one is absolute gold. Side 2 not far behind. 4.5 stars

It's interesting, I've not listened to The Smiths before, and my first real experience with their music happens to be their last album. It's like skipping to the end of the book since I'm aware of how The Smiths came to an end as a band. It's easy to see why so many people adore this band though. Morrissey's voice is incredible, near hypnotizing. Girlfriend in a Coma was meant to be the star, but I found myself enjoying I Started Something I Couldn't Finish & Death of Disco Dancer more my speed on the A-Side. The B-Side opens with Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Love Me, and holy shit, does this song hit. It has a dream like quality to it, it feels operatic in scope and grandeur. Looking into it, both Morrissey & Marr feel its the best thing The Smiths did, and my limited experience agrees. I enjoyed Death at One's Elbow too, a sort of outta nowhere bluesy experience. Overall, I enjoyed the album, and look forward to hearing more.

Strangely alt pop

One misremembers this as a compilation so finds it excellence half-surprising. One should have known better (or remembered clearer) as this is the Smiths after all. It's outstanding throughout if not the apogee of their work. "Death of a Disco Dancer" is hugely underrated slow burn of pure Marrsian vintage. "Girlfriend in a Coma" classic Morrissey and "Paint a Vulgar Picture" their version of REM's "Voice of Harold." If this had to be the end, it was damn near to going out on top.

The Smiths. I love The Smiths

Burde nok høre mer på dette albumet

Not my favourite but Johnny Marr 4eva

Feel like i kinda like the smiths

8.5/10

Not much wrong with this. Apart from the self-pity of course

Great, of course.

WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU DO A SONG ABOUT A GIRLFRIEND IN A COMA? Two songs later he's singing poignant lyrics about love and the sadness that comes from its lack. Then we get a nasty song wishing an ex an unhappy birthday which is full of hatred. He was 28 when he wrote this, surely he's past teenage melodrama by now. Seriously, Morrisey is a gigantic twat from just reading his lyrics, let alone his public rantings. Somehow his whiny voice works while Johnny and the rest of the band are brilliant. If I kept listening to this is probably go 5 starts as it is quite addictive.

Oh fuck yes. Inject it directly into my veins. I've only ever really listened to The Queen is Dead and The Smiths, but I absolutely love those albums. This album started off really strong for me and kind of slowed down towards the end, but I'm glad to have finally listened to it all the way through. Standouts: A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours, I Started Something I Couldn't Finish, Death of a Disco Dancer, Girlfriend in a Coma, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before

Tykkäsin kyllä. Ehkä jotkut kappaleet oli vähän synkähköjä omaan makuun, mutta osa oli tosi hyviä. Yhtä olen kuunnellut nyt jatkuvasti, joten ylivoimainen suosikki: Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me.

Yes 4.5

Not bad, better than most of the Brit Pop

Really enjoying this continued deep dive into The Smiths’ back catalogue. Whilst this one doesn’t contain the biggest hits (though I’ve always loved ‘I Started Something’), the music and production had become so vibrant at this point. It tails off a bit at the end, but overall, a cracking listen and a fitting swan song.

it’s a good one

Rather dark lyrics but great melodies

Would you believe me if I said that The Smiths never made a bad album in their core discography of 5 albums? It's rare for a band or artist to so quickly and definitively find their sound and consistently produce quality records without it getting stale. Strangeways continues to present the Smiths in a sonically rich production. Songwriting is still good, but not quite as hard-hitting as the songs on the prior album, "The Queen Is Dead". This was seemingly a transitional album for the Smiths, though whether there were plans to transition into a new album instead of a wind-down into a breakup is unknown. It is clear that Marr (bless his heart) and Morrissey (fuck him) were at odds with one another at this point in the Smiths. Thus, we see the end to an incredible group.

Estilo típico de The Smiths. Ningún megahit. Un 4.

Classic pop. Morrissey is often made fun of, but his voice was one to be reckoned with. This is less driving than their previous album, but still one of infinite moodiness.

I used to really hate the Smiths back when they were actually making music. My views on them have softened over the years, to the point that I actually enjoy them. This album I liked a lot. It seemed to display more maturity and polish than most of their work. 4 stars.

Another great album by The Smiths. But IMO album QID is better.

I feel like I'm contractually obligated to say, "Fuck Morrisey". That said, he still makes damn good music.

Loved this in the 80s. Less so now, (thanks Morrissey, you bellend) but nostalgia triumphs so all good

There's quite a few I like on this. 3.5

I liked it better than the queen is dead. Some good and catch songs. Easy to listen to.

Good vibes, would listen again

8/10. Not sure if this album is better than other Smiths albums, or if I am just getting Stockholm syndrome

Morrissey was kinda cooking on this album. Everything is so comically morose. 8/10
