I feel like I should love The Smiths … They check most boxes of what I like musically. Solid production and instrumentation back Morrissey’s clever lyricism. I just don’t feel it. Had a found them during my younger and “edgier” years this may have been one of my favorites.
Another Morrisey/Smiths album. Alright here we go. The first track is pretty good. Jaunty and more "upbeat" than what i think of the Smiths. Second track is alright too. So far so good. Overall it was more interesting to me than anything I have heard from the Smiths, outside of How Soon IS Now? Still not my jam but it wasn't too shabby. 3.2/5
A velvet-voiced ego trip with a few jangly gems worth keeping. I wouldn’t be mad if it was playing in the background.
Morissey is so sad all the time.
enjoyed this album.
excusing what a piece of garbage morrissey is, this album nonetheless has artistic value, but it's not the sound I'd gravitate towards much these days
Not their best but I enjoyed. Could’ve flowed better imo.
Not horrible, and I get The Smiths inspire a lot of music, but a lot of it seems reptitive. I do like the singles though and I gave it a 3 last time, going to stay the same this time!
Classic Smiths, good music
Kokonaisuutena jää lopulta haaleaksi, mut se johtuu lähinnä b-puolen (lopun) hissuttelusta, alussa on hyvää nostetta ja ihan semihauskoja sanoituksia.
Overall, this album isn't too bad, but it is not very exciting. I would mainly recommend leaving this in the background and doing something else, as it is not THAT great when you properly focus on it. Still, given that this came out in 1987, it must've competed with quite a lot of fast-paced music, but I am sure this had quite a lot of fans as well, as it is not too bad.
I've never given The Smiths a shot and my first impression is that they have such a unique sound. I don't know much else to say about this. I liked it, but I can't see myself coming back to it. I also don't think this will be the last album we'll get from The Smiths, and I am interested to hear more. Favorites: - I Started Something I Couldn't Finish - Paint a Vulgar Picture
I discovered The Smiths last year, and they are definitely a band I had to listen to a few times to mesh with. Morrisey's voice can be pretty divisive, but I've come around to liking a lot of their music. Most of my favorite songs by them aren't on this album, but still solid. Favorite tracks: - Girlfriend in a Coma - Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before - Unhappy Birthday
The last studio album of the Smiths before their eventual break up at the same time it was released and going onto to their eventual solo careers. As an album overall, it is just okay to me especially since it follows The Queen Is Dead which is their best studio work in my opinion. However, I feel that there is a couple of highlights and one song that really makes me feel this way is Last Night, I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me. It is just amazing from start to finish that really makes you feel heartbreak and sadness. Along with this are the accompanying melancholy vocals of Morrissey and the dreamy jangle composition of Johnny Marr that just make this song the perfect one of the album. It almost makes you feel like you were dreaming that you were with the crush that you really want to ask out and you actually end up becoming a couple, only to realize that you woke up and everything was just that, a dream and your have to take yourself back to reality. But if we're going off the whole album, it is just okay to me. It has one amazing song with the rest that feel more like filler than actual songs like with Meat is Murder and the Queen is Dead. It just feels uninspiring and like they were ready to just get out of the band as soon as possible to me. Favorite Tracks: Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me Rating: 3/5
Love the Smiths but this one is not my fav album. I do love Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me and Stop Me
Not a fan of Morrissey, or even the Smiths. But this was a pretty upbeat version of both, and I like it.
It is too bad that Morrissey is such a piece of shit. He tarnishes everything he has ever done at every possible opportunity. That includes this incredibly well crafted record. Smiths>Morrissey.
It was fine. Enjoyable, but didn't really have any songs that stood out. Great background music, was able to keep me focused without drawing my attention away from work.
I like the dreamy possessive exit
Don't like The Smiths that much, and it's just new wave to me, I have to say I do enjoy the vocals quite a bit.
the smiths, i liked me esta gustando esta banda, creo que es la primera que se repite
Decent. Not really my thing though.
The Smiths are great, though I rarely want a full album's worth of them. The first half of the album feels stronger - "I Started Something" was a great gem I never knew about, and "Girlfriend in a Coma" is classic. I don't see myself coming back to this album much, but it's a good listen overall.
About what I expected. Idk if I’m ever really in the mood to listen to them.
Confirming that if I haven't become a Smiths fan by this point in my life, it probably just ain't gonna happen. I enjoy the "hits" but otherwise Morrissey can save that drama for his mama.
6.5/10
Delicious sound of The Smiths in an ultimately forgettable album.
Pretty good, would rate 3.5 stars if half-stars were a thing on here. For a first-time Smiths experience, I was fairly pleased. Favourite cuts were A Rush And A Push and Stop Me. While I enjoyed the overall experience, I can’t help but wish there were more tracks akin to the opener (the keyboards! The MARIMBA!), and Unhappy Birthday borders on parody with how melodramatic it is.
could you imagine the smiths without whiner extraordinaire morrissey
i like it picasso
I’m dubbing this the OG emo. A lot of my friends are into Morrisey/The Smiths but this was my first real listen to anything outside the few mainstream songs I know. I understand why this vibes with so many.
OK I bought this album when it came out in a desperate attempt to try to stay relevant. And I quite like four of the tracks 😅
Not to brag, bu I didn't like Morrisey before it was cool.
++: I Started Something I Couldn't Finish, Death of a Disco Dancer, Death at One's Ellbow +: Stop Me If You Think You've Heard That Before, Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me, Paint a Vulgar Picture +-: A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours, Girlfriend in a Coma, Unhappy Birthday, I Won't Share You 6,4/10
The Smiths har liksom aldri funka heilt for meg
I like the smiths but this isn’t their best album.
Nice singing voice, but nothing in this grabbed my attention or moved me emotionally
Not the Smiths best album. Girlfriend in a coma is a great existential conversation. ;)
Not a big fan of the Smiths. A couple of good songs. Well done musically.
Ist halt the smiths. Kein schlechtes Lied dabei aber auch kein absoluter banger wie auf anderen alben. 3/5
Usually not a pop rock fan, I really liked a few songs on this album, and the rest was fine, not irritating. I really liked the variety of instruments and seasoning of other styles. Solid
girlfriend in a coma is RIDICULOUS lol i'm obsessed idk not my favorite smiths record! no real stand outs for me
Good album.
Probably the worst Smiths album, so still better than almost anything else from the 80s.
I would have enjoyed it more if I had heard it first as a teen.
This is the final album from this British band. The Smiths were quite popular outside of the US. There are some nice tunes here but overall very forgettable. There was a darker vibe here as several songs were about death.
meh its alright
Oh yay, another album from the Smiths! And apparently I still have to suffer 3 other albums from Morrissey before the end of this list. Well, anyway, I don't really have anything more to say about the Smiths, after 3 albums I can safely say that they were OK, they did not change my world, I will probably never listen to them again, Morrissey is a prick.
Most bearable Smiths album I’ve ever heard, didn’t make me want to end it all. Truly didn’t think that could happen
It didn’t grab me like The Queen is Dead.
Strangeways, Here We Come is the fourth and final studio album from the Smiths, a British band with a brief but very successful career. After completing the recording, but before the album had been released, guitarist Johnny Marr left the band. In the years since their breakup, the members of the band have all said that Strangeways... is their best work. The Smiths made melodramatic, electro-pop, centered on their histrionic singer, Morrissey. The album includes some of their last hits, like "Girlfriend in a Coma," a great example of the catchy, upbeat, but oddly serious songs the band made.
bão
already heard this on last attempt: had saved 5 songs.
Für mich etwas quengelig. Und britpoppy
That was alright I think
I didn’t hate it, had some good moments that I enjoyed and some groovy parts. I think he has a cool voice too.
Hasta ahora el mejorcito de Morry, el más íntimo y sincero quizá. Nota: 3.4
pretty good but as usual the best parts are when Morrissey isn't singing
Extremely hit or miss.
Absoluto nothingburger, no está mal pero ya
Better than I expected. Some interesting songs and lyrics.
good, but not their best album (as an enjoyer of the Smiths)
Really liked the first song but downhill from there. Until the last few songs which were decent again.
Pleasant enough.
Pretty good, not much more to say
It's always fuck Morrissey. Music is still good tho. I've learned to tune out some voices in songs so the music made up for it.
This was a first time listen. Morrissey has one of the best voices in rock. Not my favorite Smiths album. It seems they were trying some new things.
hell yeah unhappy birthday
4 albums in 4 years is impressive regardless of quality. Being the only Smiths album I’d never heard, with no major/stand-out singles, I wasn’t expecting much. It’s still got a quintessential Smiths sound and the songwriting, while not as catchy as their earlier work, left me neither surprised or disappointed by this effort. It’s pretty good, doesn’t overstay its welcome, and still manages good performances from Morrissey and Marr. A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours (8/10) I Started Something I Couldn’t Finish (7/10) Death of a Disco Dancer (6/10) Girlfriend in a Coma (9/10) Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before (7/10) Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me (8/10) Unhappy Birthday (6/10) Paint a Vulgar Picture (8/10) Death at One’s Elbow (6/10) I Won’t Share You (7/10) 7.2/10
3,5
Not my favorite Smith's album but it still rocks hard. Paint a Vulgar Picture is my fave.
sab boy week. bubba made a comment about how its all about the guitarist, and I have to agree. In all my fave tracks, morrissey got out of the way and marr shredded. solid, but as a whole doesnt connect with me. 3!
It were alright I suppose
I feel like this is a band trying as hard as possible to be different than their previous identity. At times it works. At times, it foreshadows radiohead or early Brit Pop. At times, I really like it. But it mostly comes off as trying very hard to not be who the Smiths were before.
I can see why this The Smiths are popular! I like their style, but I don’t know whether this album stands out to me.
3.3/i can see why people are obsessed with them
Matig
To be fair , I quite enjoyed this. I have on good authority that there are better albums by The Smiths. Morrisey is a very morose singer and Johnny Marr is a great guitarist
Wasn’t too sure at first but it certainly grew over the course of 3-4 listens. (Note to other artists here, it helps if your album is short so I have time to listen several times which is more likely to result in a better rating for you). No really stand out songs but some pleasant listens here despite Morrisey’s singing. I do think the sound of the Smith’s music far outweighs his singing.
Felt kinda poppier and with more production arrangements than other albums. Guess they just got bolder as they got older. It just felt that it lacked a certain immediacy and spite that the some earlier albums had. Second half better than the first, but jury is out on Smiths with strings.
Depending on the day & mood I'm in, I either love The Smiths, or don't care for them at all. May be a metaphor for the band in general. It's definitely not my favorite Smiths album. That being said, this album is pretty divisive, even among hardcore fans.
One pretty good song. Sort of draining to listen to the entire album
Jeg har aldri hørt noe særlig på Smiths. Har oppfattet det som deppe-musikk. Føler at jeg burde høre mer på tekstene enn det jeg greier nå. Musikken er grei, men løfter meg ikke fra bakken.
Some high notes, some low. Hadn't heard this record before, mostly sticking to their first two. Pleasantly surprised. 3.5
Made me lol multiple times, ultimate fuckboy record
Stranger Things font. ... i do appreciate the pettiness of an entire song of "hope your birthday sucks because i dont like you"
Sounds like the talking heads but more morose, never really listened to the smiths growing up except maybe the hits on the radio. I can take it or leave it.
This was much more upbeat than I had expected it to be. Little whiny but I actually kind of enjoyed it. Solid three for a first listen. Can believe how many listeners they have on Spotify. Almost 18 million. Is the is the bank morrisey came from. I suppose I don’t really care.
Prozac was introduced in 1988, if only it had been a few years earlier. I don't hate the Smiths, but there does not need to be multiple Smiths' album on this list.
When the Morrissey decides to put effort into a track, it's pretty fuckin' amazing. The rest of the time the instrumentals are really carrying the album. Front to back, Marr and the other two guys that no one remembers are putting together these beautiful jangle-y, bass-y shimmering 80s indie rock gems and it's fantastic... it's The Smiths. Morrissey only really delivers on half the tracks... but when his lyrics and vocal melodies hit, they hit really hard. They're witty and funny and devastating... and catchy as hell. But when they miss, they really drag down the track with their boring melodies and wordy ramblings. O and I really hated that growl in the pre-chorus of "A Rush and A Push". What the hell was that. Going into this record I had this assumption that The Smiths were more a singles band than an album band... and that held up pretty true here. Highlights: I Started Something I Couldn't Finish - very Smiths-y Girlfriend takes a long nap - good silly fun Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before - extra extra Smiths-y Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me - love the keys and strings - love the devastating lyrics - favourite track on the album Death at One's Elbow - weirdly upbeat for The Smiths, love the harmonica?
Solid. I generally want more from a lead vocalist, but the lyrics were cheeky and interesting enough throughout to keep me engaged.
Ok 3/5
"Whether or not Strangeways, Here We Come ended the Smiths' brief career with their best album has been the subject of considerable debate for nearly a quarter century.." Well I can easily solve that connundrum - no, it definitely isn't. No wonder they broke up. This isn't a patch on 'The Queen is Dead'. However it is still The Smiths, so it can have 3 stars just for that.
Solid album
Gone too fast, a little jangly, but man some funny corkers here. Girlfriend In A Coma and Unhappy Birthday. Legendary. What's a Strangeway?
I really need to remember "Unhappy Birthday" as a great sarcastic text to send friends on their bdays.
Every time the Smiths or Morrissey on this list I’m filled with dread and then every time I actually listen I’m like, oh okay this is actually totally fine. That said ladies after listening to Girlfriend in a Coma if he’s a Smiths fan? That’s a red flag
Pretty middling stuff from The Smiths.
Morrisey is much more tolerable in The Smiths versus solo.
generic 80s
I’ve never really been into the smiths but I can appreciate their impact on music, however this one didn’t really do it for me. A little boring to be completely honest.
Pretty standard Smiths album - enjoyable, consistent, but nothing stands out
Very meh as far as the smiths go
I've never listened through an entire The Smiths album before, so this was a first for me. Gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I actually liked the overall vibe of this album. There's something melancholy yet whimsical about these tracks, as well as some iconic lyrics. My favourite one was probably I Won't Share You, it's such a lovely song, something about it just hit the spot for me. Would definitely listen again.
Pretty generic britpop. It’s not bad, but most of the songs blend together.
The album felt kind of bland, this being the first one of the Smiths for me, and a second one from Morrissey. The first Morrissey record I rated the lowest in the first ~90 albums, and this has some similar traits, but thankfully, not all of them. This time the weird, ranting, lyrical themes aren't there, and this was a breath of freah air. What did stay the same though, are the simple, uninspiring and monotonous melodies. Only ever once in a while a song would sound different and unique from the rest, but most of the time they are just simple and straightforward, with not much excitement to break the flow. Maybe I just don't like this jangle/indie pop sound, but this album seems a bit too simple. Now that I think about it, the problem might be Morrisseys vocal color and articulation. Having said that, the album is not terrible, some of the songs are more melodic, easy going and fun to listen to. The mix has a bit of a forward treble/upper mids, which makes it more "fun and engaging", but isn't my personal preference. A fine album, nothing special.
Better than their depressing other music. Kinda upbeat, and played on acoustic instruments.
Not bad, would listen again. Rough day at work so I didn't pay super close attention.
Best Song: Death of a Disco Dancer
Never really got The Smiths. It was pretty good but wouldn't buy a copy.
Glad to have heard this, it’s cool hearing morrisey with rich band instrumentation behind him. I do feel like he made the right move going solo here , it’s kinda odd hearing him be poppy although it’s not bad it’s just , could be great I’m curious to checkout more of smith / morrisey albums in this or on my own , looks like he has quite a coming into your own story
Honestly better than I remember it but not my favourite smiths album, though I won't share you is my favourite smiths song
They have better albums
Not bad, I’m not sure if I wasn’t in the right mood to listen to it or something, but it just didn’t hit for me as much as other albums do. I’m sure if I listened to it again it will sound better, still good either way though.
Good vibes. Good beats. Good music.
Sad dad music. Unhappy Birthday stand out
Good rock music and the singer has a nice voice. Really nice to have on in the background while working around the house.
The good stuff is front loaded on this album. I was disappointed with the second half
Really liked at first but on relisten I was kinda "meh"
getting Oasis vibes (even though this predates them, and upon a quick google search were inspired by the Smiths), which is cool, because i've been on a big Oasis kick. 7/10
also March 25, 2025 HL: "Girlfriend in a Coma", "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This Before", "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me", "I Won't Share You" Morrissey 7/7. I'm tired, boss
Very well produced Nice separation between instruments Overall I like the songs Not keen on the vocals
Fine? Not my favorite The Smiths album I've listened to - maybe with some more Morrissey under my belt I'll appreciate it more in the future.
I hate Morrissey
Like the other Smiths albums I’ve had so far, this is fine. The Smiths sound great, their songs are pretty solid but they all have on glaring issue. He has a solid and unique voice and The Smiths wouldn’t be the same without him. If you haven’t figured out the problem is Morrissey. He’s such a dickhead and he drags this album down to a 3 just because he is on this album. It’s a shame because I do like The Smiths but Morrissey just makes that so difficult.
Some cool instrumentals, but a bit slow in general and monotone, 3/5
This was fun and moody.
smith smith smith smit sit 3/5
pretty good
-hmm this was pretty good! not at all up to par with Meat Is Murder in my opinion, but still a lot of highlights and def more enjoyable than the Morissey solo albums -it was definitely a little samey and didn’t have toooo many standouts, but still a decent enough conclusion to The Smiths’ catalogue -Favorites are A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours and Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before
Liked the overall vibe of the album, but it was a little too airy I think. Still would listen again, but it didn’t knock my socks off and there wasn’t one song that I’d immediately listen to again.
I find it hard to disassociate Morrissey from the Smiths given how distinctive and prevalent his vocals are. Unfortunately given Morrissey is bell end with right wing leanings it somewhat undercuts my enjoyment of the Smiths. Favourite track: Girlfriend in Coma.
Several stand out songs including girl with a coma.
Só tem uma música boa
Songs very distinct. Happy guitar, sad morrisey. One day I’ll love this band, but for now I only like them
Who knew that the Smiths made happy music. I prefer the self loathing
I love the music of The Smiths but really dislike Morrissey’s (or is it Morosey’s) lyrics. So it ends up with a 3 star.
Pretty solid, first song I knew and liked, the rest weren't pretty Smith-y as well.
Yet another Morrissey album.
Decent
Classic smiths
3.5/5
Good music actually. Vocals were ok, but they're trumped by the fact that Morrissey seems like an asshat.
The follow-up to “The Queen is Dead” and apparently the final release from the Smiths. With a cover that is probably some cultural reference whooshing over my head, I scratch mentioned head in anticipation of what this could be. “The Queen is Dead” was an excellent listen albeit a challenge. One of those challenges that’s rewarding, but a challenge nonetheless. The Smiths’ ultimate swansong, until Ticketmaster again raises prices 600% and the surviving members will have to accept a new album deal and virtual tour for 400 billion dollars sent via Neuralink. There is no other way to clear that Mr. Beast lunch meat ad from your subconscious vision. Onwards to victory Smithies. Catchy, poppy, but did we need the glockenspiel? I just wanted to type glockenspiel. That kinda day. This had almost reggae elements. That’s not good. Not a terrible song, yet not great. Oh no. Is this George Michael? The claps and horns are obnoxiously 80’s. This song feels almost lazy for the Smiths. I do like a few of the instrumental flourishes, but overall this is a bit of a dud. This is cool. This is at least 15 years ahead of its time as well. The disco dancer is dead, which is also, albeit sadly, apropos for the late 90’s/2000’s time this brings to mind from my futuristic ivory tower. Equipped with a spotlight for glaring in the eyes of the peasantry while I tell them which trends will take off in the ensuing decades. Enjoyably low key, with odd jangling guitar, creating an interesting track swimming in futuristic atmosphere. WE COME FROM A LAND DOWN UNDER. Is this? Dark humour? You just wouldn’t get it LIBRAL. That spelling mistake was part of that “joke” package, but due to my historic lack of proofreading these streams of consciousness and my sausage-like digits, it kind of feels like par for the course. The tongue in cheek humour of this song is actually quite interesting. Almost too quick. Not the coma. The uh, song. Stop stop. I think I might have heard this one before. Ok. Well. That’s it. Album has to be over now at the request of Morrissey. I want to thank the ancient monks of the unknowable mountain temples that are scattered throughout the ice-bitten isolation of earth’s many mountain ranges. I know you guys are out there grindin’ (pursuing martyrdom) making sure we don’t fall prey to the punishments of eternal damnation. I see you in your quest for enlightened humility under the tutelage and powerful ruling hand of your vengeful yet merciful god. Go off kings. Anyway. This sucked. Good ol screaming. Nothing beats it. This is moving in slow-motion now. I can’t believe this is such a short album and still, here we are. This is simply too much. This has almost elicited a laugh out of me. I have guffawed many a time during this list, but the lyrics are so dumb here that, well, they’re pretty funny. I think that’s the intention. This is like evil REM. Next child’s birthday party I attend? I will not play this song. What? Do you think I’m a monster? Check in with yourself. Ask yourself why your mind went to that place. Do you hate children? Do you hate me? Do YOU want to have an unhappy birthday? No matter how much you may be suffering with these unanswerable questions, this song is a blast. Uhh. Ok. I’ll start painting. Oh god. What horrors are ensnared in my mind. Like Tantalus, writhing for eternity, now released upon the canvas like the opening of the gates of hell. A fifth plague as the bell peals into the cracking skies. Barney has been painted. He is a different colour and he is wearing a trilby. A world where this didn’t exist is but a fond memory. An oasis in a desert of psychological anguish. Have mercy oh wise dinosaur, for it is I that loves thee. Good song. Uh oh. Let’s get into the club. Oh. The rockabilly club. Oh boy this one is not good. I won’t share you. Sounds like me hovering over the “share” function of Spotify during this album. “Has the Perrier gone straight to my head?” Sounds like me as a pre-teen pretending to be drunk while drinking sparkling water for the first time. This is actually a really nice song. What can you say about the Smiths that hasn’t already been said? Uhhh. They’re staunchly opposed to airlifting time-traveling orangutans to their history changing missions, preferring chuckwagons to be the primary mode of travel. There. That oughta be something nobody has ever said. Look, these guys are interesting, and this album follows that same path. The lyrics are out of left field and speak to me on some level. This feels like it needed to be released and while it doesn’t feel like it was intended to be the end at the time, it fits as a close to what I’m discovering was a solid career. I didn’t enjoy this nearly as much as “The Queen is Dead,” but some of the sounds on here would become essential as music progressed, and many of the beanie wearing gentrifiers who further refined indie-pop have “Strangeways, Here We Come” to thank. With their views on the transport of clairvoyant primates set aside, and taking into account the inclusion of some stinkers on the track list, this album feels influential and highly necessary with some genuinely enjoyable moments that will assuredly grow with time. Music to wake your coma-bound girlfriend with. 3-3.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Death of a Disco Dancer, Unhappy Birthday, Paint a Vulgar Picture, I Won’t Share You
Not my fav smiths album and I was bored at points but saying that I love: Girlfriend in a coma Stop me if you think you’ve heard this one before Last night I dreamt somebody loved me 😣
Generous 3 Standout track: - Death of a Disco (4/5)
- kurzweiliges Album, das aber definitiv Bock beim Hören macht - allerdings schon unter dem Nivea von The Queen Is Dead 3,25/5
I enjoyed this, but not as much as the other Smiths albums on this list.
Nothing to report here. Typical 80's pop from the Smiths
Why did i say I was excited for tomorrow's 😭 as a Smiths Hater, this was more interesting than I expected. It wasn't the worst thing I've heard to be fair. A lot of ERRRGGHHHHHH at the start lmao but my faves were the ones that I could imagine listening for fun. The rest could have been deleted from the Google Drive. Fave Songs: - I Started Something I Couldn't Finish - The Death of a Disco Dancer - Death at One's Elbow *much preferred the Mark Ronson version of Stop Me If You Think You Heard This One Before*
I never know how to feel about the Smiths. Sometimes they have really catchy and interesting music going on, but Morrissey just constantly wailing away in the saddest voice just takes me out of it. The music itself saves this album form being a 2/5. 3/5 Highlights: Paint a Vulgar Picture I Won't Share You
It’s a bittersweet end to The Smith’s run of albums, as they were just starting to piece together ways to not be so whidbey and one-note all of the time. “I Started Something I Couldn’t Finish” highlights a strong few opening tracks on this album. “Stop Me If You Think You Heard This One Before” has a super catchy “I never, I never” refrain. Another bit of relief is Morrisey not taking himself as seriously, signaled by points on the record where he gets very weird with his vocal intonation / delivery. If this is the last Smiths album on this list, I won’t be mad about it. But I’m thankful and happy to say I’ve dropped my blind bias against them, thanks to this daily list
I don’t actually know anything about The Smiths, so the interesting parts of this album didn’t have any anchor for me—I listened in the background, but it never popped to the foreground.
Better than I expected
Dont know much Smiths. Pleasantly surprised that this was way less whiny than expected.
I get why people like it, but it’s just not my kind of music.
Buen disco pero no ha envejecido demasiado bien.
Idk, hate Morrissey on this one
I enjoy the overall vibe, but no track stood out.
Like the other Smiths album, this is growing on me, and it's teetering on a 4, but not quite there. His voice is good and the melodies are _almost_ hooking me.
The 2 or 3 singles deliver and the rest of the songs are fine (if unmemorable), but Morrissey has revealed himself to be such a xenophobic, white nationalist that I can't bring myself to award this more than a 3.
The dude in the album cover is looking at the review lol He should be happy, cause I like it! Good altrock "Paint a vulgar picture" - Fucking cool guitar parts 3.9
Morrissey's silly voice, and some amusingly silly lyrics, but altogether... just fine.
The some reminders of why they were a great band at one time here, but not too many.
A little more polished than I'm used to Smith's sounding but an enjoyable listen.
No. 306/1001 A rush and a push 3/5 I Started Something 3/5 Death of a Disco Dancer 2/5 Girlfriend in a Coma 3/5 Stop Me If You Think 3/5 Last Night I Dreamt 3/5 Unhappy Birthday 4/5 Paint a Vulgar Picture 4/5 Death at One‘s Elbow 3/5 I Won‘t Share You 3/5 Average: 3,1 Solid listen.
12/02/2025
Liked a lot of it. Probably closer to 3.5 stars
Haven’t listened to much of the Smiths and I think it may stay that way. Every song sounds the same! I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it either.
The Queen Is Dead was near and dear to me when I was around 18-20, and I will always have a soft spot for that album. The rest of the Smiths discography is very hit-and-miss for me, and this record is no exception. It's all pleasant enough, but nothing here really manages to catch, much less hold my attention.
just cos I am from Manchester I should have this enshrined in my psyche, but the jaunty misery is a little performative for my taste
"Stop Me..." is the only one i really knew. It's a pretty fun album but not really one of my favorites. Good bits and pieces, not my top choice all around.
Better than Meat Is Murder for sure, but I still think The Smiths are overrated a bit. I liked some of the songs on here quite a bit surprisingly, like Last Night I Dreamt That Someone Loved Me. Morrissey's vocals on that song in particular were pretty good, alongside other times. He's far from consistent with them, as he went back to his whiney wankery that was more prominent on MIM. It's one of the better New Wave albums I've listened to, but that genre as a whole is so incredibly mid. I've given so many threes it's getting tiresome
Very down the middle music.
Morrissey and co have done it again with another perfectly fine album. Maybe a 3.5 stars here, but definitely not a 4.
Didn't know about The Smiths. Liked this album - some songs haunting, some mediocre. Happy to learn about them, but I wouldn't necessarily put this album on my 1001 list.
Not bad bit a little generic.
Quite like the Smiths but only ever listened to their popular songs that everyone knows, had sort of assumed all their other music was dreary and miserable like the stereotypes I've heard, so when I saw that today's album was a Smiths album I wasn't familiar with I thought that's what I was in for, but I was very pleasantly surprised 😊. Rush and a Push is a great start to the album, also enjoyed Girlfriend in a coma. Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me had kind of a weirdly long intro and I wish there was more of the guitar you hear creep in right at the end? where was he Fav song: Rush and a Push
When I first heard a Smiths song I thought “What whiny and dressing songs!” I still think that but Morriseys vocals and lyrics have grown on me. The musicianship of the rest of the band was always there. This particular album has some great jaunty and engaging music with a couple of their better known songs (Girlfriend…., Stop Me….).
This was fine, it not great.
This was pretty good. I really liked stop me if you think….
Pure love, thanks lads
Enjoyable.
Christ, no wonder Morrissey never got laid. The music is good of course, and the Smiths can still surprise you with an absolute nugget here and there (Paint a Vulgar Picture fits that profile here for me) but in the main it's a dreary trudge.
it was alright- first encounter with the smiths and was expecting much worse, drearier I think.. but this was better than I thought. nothing I’ll be rushing to go back to though
"Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" is a standout track, I love the loving intro. I thought it was a pure instrumental track and was satisfied, but it only got better halfway through. Bit jarring to follow it with Unhappy Birthday, which was... not my favorite. Overall a pretty fine record, not the Smiths album I would have chosen but not bad
Definitely the most un-Smithsy Smiths album I've heard. But I'm not sure that makes it that good. Not sure why it was included on this list -- they curated an incredibly distinctive sound that is missing on this record. There definitely were a few good songs, and I mostly enjoyed it. Not blown away though.
Not that I think it’s the greatest thing in the world but I don’t understand all the seething hate for Morrisey’s singing Stylistically, I think it’s pretty alright. I enjoyed some of it, didn’t hate any of it and I can understand it’s not really for everyone. Really tows a line. I think in other hands these could really be bangers, but ive always liked Last Night I Dreamt, and Paint A Vulgar Picture was pretty catchy.
This one was ok and I think of the Smiths on this list, probably my favorite. 3 or 3.5
3/5
This wasn't as amazing as I was hoping. Maybe it would grow on me?
The Smiths - "Strangeways, Here We Come" [1987] I'm sorry I just don't get the absolute love for this band. Mainly due to Morresey's vocals which to me is not much more than a whiny drone. Musically I can get into them but his vocal delivery almost always kills it for me. I think this album starts off pretty well with the first three song "Death of a Disco Dancer" being my favorite with the band build up towards the end. After that its just the same old Smiths that I don't think is bad, I just hear nothing compelling in it. "Unhappy Birthday", though I kinda like the lyrics, the delivery made my eyes roll. And "Paint a Vulgar Picture" it just sounds like he starts singing winding and wavering in wind. I went cross-eyed listening to it. "Death at Ones Elbow" is a great late entry, but overall not enough to pull it out of the overall blah that is The Smiths. (6.7) ★★★
I am not a big fan of The Smiths. I don't like Morrisey's voice, but there are some cool guitar work on the album. 3 stars
like the Smiths a bit, but for me, their best stuff is singles and B-sides. Their album cuts usually leave a lot to be desired. My favorites here are "Girlfriend in a Coma", "Stop Me if You've Heard This One Before", and "Death at One's Elbow". Most of the rest I could live without. 3 stars
3.5
In terms of Smiths album covers this is definitely the worst… it’s just a beige, vomity looking floating head. In sonic terms it’s definitely a downturn from their previous - very flabby and overproduced and not enough Marr-inspired guitar jangle. The best melodies like Girlfriend In A Coma are ones you’d hear on a best of anyway and tunes like Stop Me Stop Me Oh Stop Me and I Started Something I etcetera are not in their best produced form or as great as they could have been. Death Of A Disco Dancer and Unhappy Birthday are maybe worth checking out but in general the first half is patches of greatness and the second half is a total letdown.
Pretty good
Queen is Dead is better
Heard an earlier album by TheSmiths that I found pretty non-descript, but I really enjoyed this one, although some of it is a little soft around the edges for me
I usually like the smiths despite controversy but this kinda sucked
Tycker denna är rätt mycket värre an alla smiths förespår morrissey solo karriär. Fortfarande charmig och har alrdrig riktigt lyssna smiths för mig utan för tjejer jag gillat så eftersom jag inte har den motiveringen nu gör detta till inget speciellt
Minus a point because Morrissey
7/10
Album is good, but is nothing special to me.
I would like to describe it as "ethereal indie-rock", even if that makes me sound very pretentious. Very interesting instrumentally, with unusual melodies and sounds. Unfortunately not quite enough to lift it above 4 stars, so I go with 3.5/5, rounding to 3 in the vote.
Bit depressing but ok
7/10 Favorite Tracks: Death of a Disco Dancer, Last Night I Dreamt that Somebody Loved Me Least Favorite Tracks: Unhappy Birthday, Stop Me if You Think you’ve Heard This Before, A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours
Pleasant listening experience. However, no song really stood out to me, so I feel like I probably won't be listening to it again.
3 stars
Whatever genre this is is kinda growing on me by being forced down my throat from the algorithm
really weird choice putting this one on the list, almost everyone i know says its their worst by quite a bit. feels closer to solo morrissey than anything else, as johnny marr’s contributions are fairly minimal - the band were basically falling apart at this point. that said, it’s still a great album. even though it’s lacking in the more jangly and detailed guitar parts, there’s a lot to like. “last night i dreamt that somebody loved me”, “girlfriend in a coma” and “death of a disco dancer” were always standouts to me, and hearing “unhappy birthday” for the first time while i was 13 was what introduced me to the band - i thought it was funny. so to that one person in the top reviews who somehow thinks everything they’ve done sounds the same, you’re either lying or just wrong. this sounds nothing like their previous releases, and it’s what lets the record down if anything. 3.5/5
Interesting
6.7 Many good moments… a lot of morrissey bullshit. But some very cool grooves and overall very nice.
3 out of 5. Not a bad album but The Smiths have better entries than this one (That being said, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before is a banger)
Didn’t know much about them but some of the songs scream Manchester and the 1975. Decent but the voice doesn’t hit me right.
Strangeways, Here We Come is a pretty decent album. I wouldn't really say it does anything super special or original or things that it's contemporaries does not do but for what it does do, it does a well enough job. The music was all pretty nice to listen to as were Morissey's vocals and the lyrics felt on brand for him and were pretty interesting just like the other Smiths songs and the album went at a brisk pace meaning it didn't get too tedious. This album i feel is probably in the middle ground of Smiths albums, not as cool sounding as The Queen Is Dead but not as iffy sounding as Meat Is Murder, it's just right. Best Song: Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me Worst Song: Death at One's Elbow Side note: i also find it pretty interesting that i have now done every Smiths album on this project but none of Morissey's solo stuff yet but anyways, here is my ranking of them 1.The Queen Is Dead 2.Strangeways, Here We Come 3.Meat Is Murder
obv the weakest smiths album but that's still pretty good
6.5/10 So a Smiths album I quite liked! This was less of the jangly guitar and more of the indulgent production of a late period Very Important Band. For good and bad. Very well put together, nice use of brass and strings here and there. I could look past the Morrissey of it all for once. Lyrics were sometimes fun but very often almost a parody of how I perceive arch smiths lyrics to be written. Best: Stop Me if you’ve heard this one before
Interesting listen, good sequence of songs. Lyricism is central, though hard to understand at times.
Good but not their best work. 7/10
Better than expected
Not bad, feels like one big song? Maybe morissey’s vocals are just a bit distinct.
鼓好吵
I preferred listening to The Queen is Dead, and that one got four stars, so I have to give this one three.
Pre-listening thoughts: morrissey can suck my nards Post/during listening thoughts: The album is catchy though 😞 If a prick like Morrissey wasn’t at the forefront of this I’d enjoy it a lot more. However despite Morrissey’s more recent comments I am going to give this a real rating bc the other members of the band (and the band when they were active) didn’t do anything to my knowledge. Hate to say it… this was kind of baller. I’ll dock a star for morrissey. 5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: oh most definitely not Fav tracks: I Started Something…, Stop Me If You Think…, Girlfriend in a Coma Least fav tracks: any time Morrissey opens his mouth
Первая песня понравилась. Остальное мимо ушей пролетело
Actually kinda liked this one. Might be worth another look.
the most ehh album from this band
I’ve always heard about the Smiths but have never actually listened to any of them. I can see returning to the Smiths in the future.
I don’t really know what it is but there is something about their style that I find entertaining but not enough to want to listen to more.
Some of it was decent.
Je redoutais cet album, n’ayant pas aimé les derniers albums des Smiths générés, mais en vrai c’était correct
only liked a couple of songs
Nice melodies and hooks. Morrissey suckz
The Smiths can be pretty hit and miss for me. Same goes for this album.
I've not listened to this whole album until now. It doesn't make my short list of favorite smiths albums but still really enjoyed listening to it front to back
I remember listening to Girlfriend in a Coma when I was 13 and fell in love with the Smiths. I loved the dark themes set to jangly guitars. I didn't listen to this full album until much later and there are some great songs here. Definitely not the best Smiths album in my opinion, and not a great album to start with if you dont know the Smiths. (That would be The Queen is Dead). It gets a little too "Morrissy" in some parts like "Unhappy Birthday" lol. But overall it's a solid album.
I never managed to get into The Smiths when I was a teenager. And I've never really mangled to do so on the odd occasion that I might have listened to some of their music since. Partly it's that it was just so cool to like them back then. Partly it's because Morrissey is clearly a bit of a cunt at times. But I can never really manage to listen on a regular basis – despite Marr being astonishing. I knew a couple of the songs here, although I imagine I've heard Girlfriend in a Coma more on I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue than anywhere else. It was OK, and maybe I might listen to this again occasionally. Despite Morrissey.
This was OK. I don't think I can fully appreciate the sound for some reason. Instrumentals were good, but the vocals felt a bit wispy at times. 'Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me' takes my fave.
The worst Smiths studio album I've heard, and I've heard most. Still decent.
Fine, but there is definitely too much Morrissey on this list.
Sadly I can't get over the Morrissey of it all. I don't particularly like his musical persona let alone his real life persona so I get an ick while listening. Good though.
I have a feeling this is one of those albums that means a lot to those who first got it as a teenager in the 80s and listened to it a million times. As an adult first-timer it didn’t quite hit that way. Decent songs and playing with a kind of dreamy indie-pop sound and 80s production sensibility. Lots of jangly chimey guitars and gated reverb snares. The singing is very limited and one dimensional and most of the music is ultimately pretty flat and forgettable. Best song by far is Death of a Disco Dancer.
Let’s be real, no matter how much you gush about Morrissey, there are simply too many Smiths/Morrissey albums that are considered essential. I’ve enjoyed some, but today’s album just felt very middle of the road, and could definitely have been excluded. There is nothing on this album that his others don’t do better. That’s not to say that it’s bad, but it certainly didn’t leave me wanting to hear more.
This is closer to solo Morrissey. Louder than bombs would've been a better choice.
Solid album; not really my taste but I appreciate the throwback to the 80s
IT was OK. The Smiths are a decent band, even if Morrisseyis a complete AH. Songs were good. Worth a listen
Just okay.
A couple bangers a couple slower ones
Liked it but not their best album 7/10
Ei yllä esim. The Queen is Dead:n tasolle. 3/5
Not that I dont like this, there were just very few times where I was super interested and focused on the tune. My favorite two tracks were Death Of A Disco Dancer and I Wont Share you. The popular songs were boring to me and the melodies weren’t as pleasant All that said, I liked my second time through a lot more than the first. Ill give them three stars for that
Was never really a Smiths fan, but now I can appreciate the band musically. I still think that Morrisey is one of most overated singers of all time though. 3⭐️
Oh man what a whiny asdhlle - a whole record of snark and sneer with barely any songwriting out in there. At this point Morrissey wasn’t even trying to- and while the music is good, the words entertaining - it’s rather a transient album - nothing too memorable besides Girlfrkend in a Coma. And I’m not even applying the Morrissey penalty score of -1 star.
Blind album, know know the artist by name. Nothing in particular stood out to me and shocked me. Just another basic album that doesn't appeal to me much but isn't awful in anyway.
Not the most happiest of listenings but I really enjoyed it. Great lyrics and great instrumentation. Will be listening to more Smiths.
Catchy melodies with rare lyrics.
3/5 Also alright
Not the best album from the Smiths
classic but not my fave work of them
There's something nice, a bit too sad not sure.
Boring compared to The Smiths and The Queen is Dead.
Without a strong sense of who Morrisey is, it's hard to understand this project as anything other than a decent kind of pop punk act. I don't think they do anything special here but its all competent and there are some tracks that stand out I would relisten. I had this on in the background for most of the weekend and there are some catchy moments but mostly it just filled the space just fine. I could see it inspiring other bands like Panic! and in that way I think that this band is better than what came after. Overall it's not all that memorable but I kinda liked it.
I don't think this is as good as the previous Smiths album we had, but maybe it has better individual tracks. "Stop me if you think you've heard this one before" is my favorite of the lot, but "Death of a Disco Dancer" is also really good. Morrissey does the thing where he says too many words per line a few times, but for whatever reason it comes off better on this album. The song themes are all typical Smiths depressing, sad, and mopey thematically, but the music is surprisingly upbeat. This is pretty much their whole deal and they don't deviate too much from it. I liked it, less than Meat Is Murder, but still pretty good.
love the smiths but this isn’t great, they sound tired
I gave this one two passes, a few months apart. I enjoyed it more musically the second time, but it never really caught me. It was still a good listen.
It's a bit miserable
This is The Smith's second album that I've gotten on here, and their fourth and final album as a band. I really feel like I should like The Smiths sound ('80s indie rock!), but it hasn't quite hit for me yet. Basically everything on here I find perfectly enjoyable, but a bit unexceptional. The front half of this one is also quite a bit stronger than the back half. "Death of a Disco Dancer" does not seem to be one of their bigger hits, but it was the real standout on here for me. It was really striking in kind of a beautiful-but-haunting way. Apparently it's also the only song on any of their albums where Morrissey plays an instrument (piano). "Girlfriend in a Coma" is the hit on this one, and it's catchy as hell but the lyrics are kind of hilarious. "Unhappy Birthday" is also pretty hilarious. "I Won't Share You" is a strong closer. I really like to think that one day The Smiths are just going to click for me, but until then this is solid but nothing more. Favorite song: Death of a Disco Dancer Other: A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours, I Started Something I Couldn't Finish, Girlfriend in a Coma, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before, Unhappy Birthday, I Won't Share You 10/8/24
Decent album with some good songs. I could listen to it some more. 3.5/5
This was ok. Not my favorite Smiths album. Makes for good background music.
Not as bad as I thought it would be
Melhores músicas: Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me, Paint a Vulgar Picture. Piores músicas: 2.5/5
I like how consistent the sound is across the album Death of a Disco Dancer is my least favourite song on the album and it's one of these longest songs there Not the biggest fan of the growling in earlier songs either Overall decent album
It took me a while to learn to appreciate the Smiths, but now that I do I find their music to be quite enjoyable. 3.5/5
I didn't love it, but I also didn't hate it as much as some people. I get that he sounds the same and kinda whiney throughout, but I still kinda dug it.
3/5
Oh boy….what a messy album. Some of best songs The Smiths ever made, especially “Death of a Disco Dancer,” but also, some of the absolute worst songs The Smiths ever made. And the thing about it is, what makes one song so fucking phenomenal also makes another downright deplorable. Morrisey’s weird vocal choices work on some songs here and ruin others, like “A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours.” Marr trying to get away from jangle pop clicks on “I Started Something I Couldn’t Finish” but fails miserably on “Death at One’s Elbow.” The strings and piano sometimes fit, sometimes feel messy. Rourke and Joyce feel as locked in as ever, but some of the material just straight up doesn’t work. Sometimes it’s too spacey, sometimes it’s too minimal, sometimes it just sounds like the band is running out of steam, like on the single, “Girlfriend in a Coma,” which is good, but far from their best single, that’s for sure. And I know that if you lined up 500 nerds and asked them their favorite cuts on Strangeways, you’d get 500 different answers, but I would still safely bet that none of them prefer Strangeways to literally *any* other album by The Smiths, compilations included. If you really like The Smiths, their discography is 4 albums long and some extra singles – you should take 30ish minutes to listen to Strangeways to be complete, but that is not a requirement by any means. It’s sad that they couldn’t go out with a final bang considering the rest of their discography, but Strangeways is too chaotic and too all-over-the-place to be anyone’s favorite child, even if it’s the last breath of an otherwise truly great band. Thankfully, because The Smiths were a truly great band, there’s still a good chunk of material here to salvage, but I say, take what you need and send the rest to the body shop.
I never really warmed to this one before, despite being a fan of The Queen is Dead and Meat is Murder. I'm surprised that this one was chosen over their first to be honest. I'd say 2 albums would have been sufficient really, but this isn't too bad. There are some good songs on here, but a lot of them feel a bit like throwaways, which makes sense given the band were pretty much at the end of their rope. I enjoyed A Rush and a Push, Death of a Disco Dancer, Stop Me, and Last Night. Never got the appeal of Girlfriend in a Coma, but maybe it's popularity was due to the timing of it's release with the news of the band splitting. Paint a Vulgar Picture could be quite cutting if it wasn't immediately invalidated by the countless reissues and compilations of The Smiths' own work subsequently released. Would be a very fitting takedown of the industry today, with the padded deluxe albums on streaming sites and never ending vinyl variants.
One of those albums that I don’t really know what to say. Not bad, not great. Changes it up enough. Right about average.
This album is decent. It's not as good as The Queen Is Dead. But it's pretty middle of the road Smiths. A fantastic album lyrically, like all Smiths records. I do really like how big this album sounds - there are a lot of things going on but it never sounds busy or out of control. It's also a very clear sounding album, like you can focus in easily on each individual instrument and follow along with just that the whole time. It's maybe not as cohesive as The Queen Is Dead, each song seems more of a standalone effort towards a whole if that makes sense. I don't know that I would really seek this album out to listen to again. I probably wouldn't even pick it up at the record shop if I saw it there. It's good, but it's not one I feel I need to own and play frequently. 3/5
alternative Rock, 1987 -> 3
Girlfriend in a Coma Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me
mopier than I remembered
Girlfriend in a coma is wretched guff but the rest of it is pretty good
they actually have a song called "Unhappy Birthday" is this self-parody?
So here we are again; the Smiths. Either they are way more popular in the UK or the people making the list happen to love them some Morrissey. 3 Smiths and 4 Morrissey albums on the list. And to me, they all sound the same and mostly blend into the background. There’s very little I think is bad but there not a whole lot more that really stands out.
A weak 3.
Do we need two Smiths albums? Is it any different to Meat Is Murder?
love the instrumental music, vocals not so much
Really not bad, but it tailed off about halfway through. Would love to hear this with a real singer supporting the band
Le daré un 4, por tener el megahit Girlfriend in a coma, pero me ha aburrido un poco.
I know it’s ignorant to say “all this dance music sounds the same” but I don’t think Morrisey has a very interesting career trajectory. For the 7 albums on here, does really all that much change from Meat is Murder in ‘84 to You are the Quarry in ‘04? At least Elvis Costello is evolving and reinventing himself. Every year his sound has developed, so the next album has a different sound. You know who else has a really interesting evolution? Sting, but the Police have two albums on here and no solo albums. Today I listened to Nothing Like The Sun from 1987 and really enjoyed it. You suck Dimery. (My views on The Smiths have already been expressed multiple times elsewhere).
Some great tracks on here, but Queen Is Dead is the better record. Also forever fuck Morrissey.
I was a pretty good listen, but falls into that category of I probably won't go out of my way to seek it out again.
Not bad bet mid
there are FOUR MORRISSEY SOLO ALBUMS on this horrible evil list so ill have plenty of time to hash things out with him eventually, but at least ive been eased into it with what was when i last listened to their discog the smiths album i Got the most. still holds up to me as pretty good with some unique charms that help me connect with it over their other material, with a thick impressionist almost dream-poppy style. and ive gotta say that even tho on the whole the band's melodic style does not blow me away or stick with me, i no longer find it Utterly Bewildering which i guess is the best i can hope for atm. theres a couple moments here that extend things out instrumentally, not a Jam or whatever but theyre p striking anyway. the vibest smiths album which for someone not sold on their music or lyrics means it pretty much has to be their best
There are some nice tunes here from the band. Surprisingly listenable for a typical '80s synth-infused rock.
