Even if I did think that one song was a Jack Johnson song, still a top notch album

Thank god for jack white

Awesome album. Classic. Hotel yorba, fell in love with a girl. Dead leaves and the dirty ground.

Hi: I'm Finding It Harder To Be a Gentleman, Offend In Every Way, I Can't Wait Lo: Little Room, I Think I Smell A Rat The White Stripes minimalist sound is one of their strengths. Every track is well-composed and deliberate in every waveform...White Blood Cells isn't just a call back to classic rock (It has very early Led Zeppelin vibes, with crunchy Robert Plant-like guitars and powerful John Bonham-like pounding drums), it's stripped-down to the essentials. Like a house with the drywall removed, only every stud and beam are level, square, and plumb. It sounds wild, but it's deceptively precise. Having now heard the tracks that weren't in heavy rotation, I have a whole new appreciation and sense of importance about The White Stripes.

The bridge to their two greatest albums. I'll never not be utterly fascinated by Meg White. Apparently she started drumming on a whim, yet ended up thundering at times like she's the second coming of John Freaking Bonham. And this is band (fine, duo) without a bassist. I'll always be interested in anything Jack White does for the rest of his musical life, but there's already strong evidence Meg White brought out his best work. Plus her background vocals are always the perfect amount of spice. If you're like me and initially had this somewhere between a 4 and 5, give it the old "3 great songs, no bad songs" test. An apt comparison would be to call this the Stripes' Rubber Soul and Elephant is their Revolver.

I love The White Stripes. I'm slightly torn here. It's not my favourite of their albums but it's still brilliant. It's only 40 mins long but it's got 16 songs on it, you do the maths.

In 2004 I bought the soundtrack album of "Napoleon Dynamite" because I loved all the music, but especially for two songs. Those two songs were not on the album. One of them was "We're Going to Be Friends," which remains one of my favorite songs ever (including when sung by Jack Johnson). Had I bought this album for that song (instead of using Limewire—it was 2004 after all) I think I would have been very shocked since I was not, at that time, very familiar with the White Stripes. Oh...this is not an album of such acoustic sweetness. My first listen through was rough. All I heard was harshness—in voice, guitar, and drums. Didn't like. Started over before I finished. "Good lord, look at the praises to this album!" I noted. I'm gonna have to dig deeper and figure this out. I spent more time re-listening and reading about this album than most any I have reviewed. I watched all the videos. (The Lego one!!!) It's kind of amazing when you start to see the light, especially when, just as often, relistening reinforces and deepens your dislike. His crazy voice, the distorted guitar, and heavy percussion are raw and cool! The lyrics! "Little Room!" An homage to "Citizen Kane"! I love "Hotel Yorba." My score might be slightly inflated, just to incorporate the lovely feeling that getting a challenging assignment led to new appreciations this time.

I have heard of this group, but I really have never listened to their music before. Although I was not giddy with excitement as I listened, I really did enjoy the album. I will listen again...and again...

Pretty awesome can listen to it all the way thru

Tiny room was really cool. Minimal song with only lyrics and hi hat

The White Stripes are absolutely a back to basics rock band. This album features fairly simple songs with good riffs, memorable songwriting, and great delivery from both Jack and Meg White. But at the end of the day, the White Stripes sound like the White Stripes. They show that back to basics doesn't mean rehashing everything that went before, but doing something new with the fundamentals. Jack White's DIY ethic is important because it democratizes music, something that the rise of home recording has only expanded upon.

Amazing stripped down classic rock album. I think other than Aluminum, the album is strong from start to finish, with varied tempos and delivery. Jack White's voice doesn't sound like a great rock voice, but it is perfect for his music. Very enjoyable album.

In my opinion ythe best White Stripes album. Great song after great song. Dead Leaves...is an epic song and what follows is Jack White's best songs in his career. The songwriting is so spot on , the arrangements clean and punchy. 5 stars

really grizzly, beating-heart, drenched kind of stuff

Already loved it. Saw them at Glastonbury and it blew my mind how much of a racket 2 people could make, and the stage presence. The Union Forever is a tune.

I played this CD until it no longer functioned. Can’t believe I forgot about all the gems on this album. 100 stars.

A once over rated album and band has grown to be one of my all time favorites. Really love this one.

Top tier album 11/10

Liked it very 90's poppy grunge sound

Five stars. Mic drop.

I don't know if I appreciated this album enough when it debuted. I went through a White Stripes phase, and I bought all their albums. This one, however, I listened to and enjoyed, but now I really appreciate the entirety of it. Meg and Jack create an entire genre of music through drums, guitar, and production. The influences of 90s grunge, 70s funk, Nashville, and their own spin on things is just so refreshing. Not one dud on this album. A truly great record.

Reminds me of summers in middle school developing my personal musical tastes. Such a great record and it still holds up today

Another one I have heard before but probably not listened to as an album in over 10 years. It holds up. I felt nostalgia for the popular songs and really enjoyed the deeper cuts as well

Rating: 10/10 Best songs: all

Great album.

The riffs and haunting vocals make this a classic. No wonder Jack White is who he is...

Always loved this

Almost all songs saved

Love this band. Great album. I remember when it came out.

Fantastic!

Bloody hell this album is good. Not enough white stripes fans these days. Where are my fellow white supremacists at??

Bloody epic album! What's not to love 🥰

somehow sounds fresh even in 2021. I Smell A Rat definitely could've been left off. 9/10

love this album

The best White Stripes album I think even without the guitar solos

9/10. Thought I'd rated this already, but this was an excellent album. Good length, and fun songs that don't drag on.

Bangers

Great album. Love jack white

Classic

So soo soo good

This album is very special to me - Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground was one of the first songs I learned on guitar. Little Room is one of my favorite songs ever, not just of the White Stripes. Tons of gems here Hotel Yorba, Fell in Love With a Girl, We're Going to Be Friends. There are a few songs I don't love here but I think it's a fantastic album that still sounds great 20 years in.

This was great!! Love the white stripes!!! Many songs I’ve heard before and many that I hadn’t (: 10/10 would listen again

Big record. Reminds me of Ted’s Collision in Toronto and a fantastic time in my life

I surprisingly have never listened to the Clash, but I loved this album, it has a good beat. Might have to be one to add to the record collection!

Amazing rock. At least 4 really good songs

Good shit

Bold as love is a great song

Jack White makes rock n' roll cooler, smarter, and more fun.

Classic.

Great album with a ton of killer tracks. In my collection already.

Awesome!

After a couple of dips in the water, The White Stripes decided to make a full splash with White Blood Cells and inhabit the whole lake. A perfect blend of blues and pop without having to compromise, Jack and Meg offer us earworms that doesn't cease to fade and will have one humming even the deep cuts. If only this album can actually be in our bodies to help us stay strong...

quality garage rock despite the character of jack white's voice. pretty cool that they made this album right after they divorced, very fleetwood mac.

God I love the White Stripes. Jack and Meg have so much chemistry and their style of playing beautifully complement each other. This is not my favorite White Stripes record since it does have some personal skips like the Rat song and Aluminum, but it is arguably the "most" White Stripes album and a great first introduction to the band. The most basic elements, like the distinctive guitar, the understated drums, and just pure rock energy are done so well without needing the more serious dive that other White Stripes material does.

I prefer this to jack's solo stuff. very basic but some good tracks

Pretty, pretty good.

Hard edgy electrified punk blues that sounds massive but lacks a little when it comes to groove. It doesn’t seem to get into your hips, it doesn’t have the boogie. It’s angular. It has a lack of curves. I enjoyed it.

Just a great rock album. 4/5

A classic.

Love this album. I've heard it many times before. 4/5

Jack and Meg are probably the best duo to come out of rock music in this era. Nothing on this album sounds extraordinary or "special". It's just good regardless. Technical skill and the ability to produce a range of sounds is paired with great album structure and the ability to create songs that make you feel good while also sounding good.

3.5 for White Blood Cells. There are some definite bangers on here. I love that the album is filled with mostly short songs, that get in, make their point and get out. no mindless noodling. I appreciate the garage rock sound a lot, but there's a point where it gets exhausting, and I found that a bit after the album's true gem, "We're Going to be Friends", that it was starting to wear on me. There is some very raw, unfiltered and good blues rock hidden down in this album, and it's worth listening to many times. Standouts: The Same Boy You've Always Known I'm Finding It Harder to Be a Gentleman The Union Forever

po pire mais c quand quon a dla musique quebecois icite vive le quebec. best: we're going to be friends. worst: aucune idée

elephant better

After listening to so many rock albums, I have a new found appreciation for the crisp style of the white stripes

Love it. Jack White makes me feel sexy, rebellious, wild, young. In between so folks, then rock again. Angry but also looking for love.

its a great album. It has lots of energy and a crazy amount of variety for only having two band members. I love it. Expect "Alumium" - this track just sucks.

Schöne Gitarrenriffe, Stimmen meist überschlagen (wohl so gewollt), sperrige Songs, roh und ungestüm.

Loved this album, heard a few of the tunes before, but so good , don’t own the album, but one to consider - “ fell in love with a girl” great track……..say no more🕺🏻

Brought back a ton of memories from being a teenager during this time. Some of these tracks were nice and raw and others seemed a little overdone but that’s probably because I’ve heard them so much before.

Really nice

Great album

Despite being a millennial person that could have grown up to this sort of music, I didn't really seek out The White Stripes as much except for Icky Thump (not on the list). Great guitar work on that one! White Blood Cells is the first of the three albums The White Stripes have on this list. They're a notable 2000s rock band in the sense that rock music's role in the music status quo as "top dogs" (or rockism for academics) was waning. The Gold Rush was already passed its peak, you were not going to create a new Rolling Stones, Zeppelin, KISS or even a Nirvana once you hit the 21st century. Rap music helped push pop music back and reminded us all that the biggest music is the most accessible and rock music was becoming typecasted, not having the same marketable appeal as it had to boomers and gen x'ers. Rock was simply so big and had so many specific umbrella genres and niches, whereas pop was like corn or rice. Where am I going with this? Well, The White Stripes sort of represent some of the best 'rock' music of the decade. The Arctic Monkeys were the British equivalent (substitute garage rock with post punk) of a big 2000s rock band. White Blood Cells was the album/big singles that made The White Stripes go from indie act to pop culture. White Blood Cells has a bunch of songs that are quick to the punch, although not all of it is fully garage rock or punk inspired. I think that execution isn't fully flawless, but it does give them a certain sound that they were going for. But I don't know man, it just doesn't hit that hard for me. Some of these songs I can't care less for (Dead Leaves and Dirty Ground, Hotel Yorba, We're Going To Be Friends), some cromulent offerings and a couple of good stuff. It's overall a fine album, but compared to the other White Stripes albums, doesn't offer as much to me. It's bread you get for free with a slightly special butter selection while you wait for your food to get to the table.

I wasn't a fan of The White Stripes when they first came on the scene...I got all the garage rock bands confused - Jet, The Hives, The Strokes, etc. etc. But I am glad I finally listened to this, it's very good.

a really good album, has some of my favorite songs by them

Some standout tracks here from one of the great groups of this century. What I like about Jack White's approach is that he keeps things simple, straightforward, and short. Each song has an infectious hook that White pounds you with until you have to bang your head in acknowledgement, but he always cuts off the song before that hook gets overly annoying.

I said it once before but it bears repeating…….. I LOVE MEG WHITE

I've got half these songs saved already (Dead Leaves, Yorba, Fell In Love, etc) but idk if I'd ever even listened to the full album before. Great stuff.

Fun and musically interesting album.

Remember when the bass player for Redd Kross added a bass to this album and called it Red Blood Cells? I've always liked this album. Not my favorite from The White Stripes. But this listen I found it to be too long. Still good though.

One of, if not the, best garage duos ever. As much as I like this album though, I don’t think it’s the best white Stripes album.

Жена у старого конечно стремная

Decent Guitar Riffs. Decent lyrics. But it's the generally the same four chords over and over. Which is fine.

364/1089, officially more than a third through the list as it stands today. Very good record. Love the pace, nothing lingers too long. Not as life changing as Elephant a few months ago, but enjoyed it nonetheless.

What I like most about 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘊𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘴 is how much it does with so little. With just guitar and drums, The White Stripes create an album that feels raw, energetic, and surprisingly varied. There’s nothing fancy about it, but that’s exactly the point. The songs live or die on their riffs, melodies, and attitude, and most of them work. The album also has a looseness that makes it feel alive. Nothing sounds overthought or polished to perfection. Instead, it captures a band that seems completely confident in its simplicity and knows exactly how to make it work. The only thing missing is the truly massive song that would arrive on the next album. Even so, 𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘊𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘴 already sounds like a band on the verge of becoming something much bigger.

Not my favorite White Stripes album, but I’ve always thought of this being the one where they were in their purest form. ‘Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground’ is a pretty incredible leadoff track.

good, fun, moody, tender sometimes

Pretttttty good. When you get down to brass tacks it's actually wild that they put together this sound with just 2 people. A few bluesy songs here and there that are fine, and the hits are really great. Fell in Love with a Girl, both just the song and the music video, are mesmerizing

Love The White Stripes. This is a great, great album, it just suffers from a small amount of bloat in some of the deep tracks. That's only a minor knock though. I can remember the first time I heard "Fell In Love With a Girl" and knew I immediately had to get the album. Was not disappointed.

Another solid entry from The White Stripes! I might like this even more than Elephant, though certainly at least as much. These two albums really confuse me as to why Get Behind Me Satan also needed to be included on here.

Solid, solid stuff! I cannot articulate what exactly this particular album does better than the rest of their discog, because in my head they all kind of sound the same. The design uniformity across their cover arts doesn't help in that respect!! (though I respect their commitment to it) I came back to it a couple of times and fully appreciated it as a whole package. That's more than I can say for Elephant and Get Behind Me, Satan. It's a four! Standouts: I'm Finding It Harder To Be A Gentleman • Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground • Expecting • Offend In Every Way • I Think I Smell A Rat • Now Mary

Weak 4 on this one but I feel it could grow on me. Crazy this used to be the sound of the future! They definitely did this genre better than their myriad imitators. Loses some steam around Aluminum but then picks up again for a strong finish.

I love the White Stripes but for me this doesn't ascend to the heights of my teenage favourite Get Behind Me Satan.

Amazing stuff - really enjoyed relistening

Some classically unique songs on this album. I don't always dig more than a few songs at a time from White Stripes, but those that I do dig really stand out.

It's crazy to think how influential this album and the White Stripes were in defining what rock would look like in the 21st century, esp the 2000s! Really solid album overall. My fave songs were "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground," (which was an awesome intro), "Fell In Love With a Girl," "Aluminum," and "The Union Forever." (The last 2 are the tracks that stood out to me the most). Its not an album I'd usually listen to, but I can definitely appreciate that it sounds pretty great!

I love this album

Banger album - high energy, tune after tune. Simple, catchy, and energetic.

Great album, good collection and variety of songs. With some well written lyrics, and an amped up feeling to the whole album

8 - GOOD

Fun album that keeps rolling even with a couple of pot holes on the back half.

White Blood Cells is the White Stripes albums I am most familiar with and probably my favourite of the three that we’ve had from the generator.

Well well well… I love this album. It’s been quite a long time since I listened to it actually. Meg and Jack really understand how to create and use space, which is so amazing in a rock band. Often the impulse is to fill every moment with… something, with sound - with strings, voice, tambourine, something. Fear of an empty second. And up to We’re Going to be Friends this is a 5. But then it falls off for the second half. I do like This Protector as the closer. But all in all, it’s a strong 4. Boolean Yes, always glad to hear again before I die.

A modern classic. Great rough cuts mixed with hits.

Yeah, I mean, it’s great. It’s a great rock album. Jack is ripping it up and Meg holds it together. Gets me going, and sometimes surprisingly life affirming. The more of their music I hear, the more I appreciate White Stripes as one of the best rock bands this side of Y2K. Eat your hearts out, Black Keys.

rarely in the mood to listen to this, but it slaps

I prefer other albums of theirs but damn this is good

Consider myself becoming more and more a fan of Jack White, his music and his sound. I can see how this is not for a lot of folks due to the uniqueness of his voice and style but I an a fan. Funny thing is, outside of a few songs, I couldn't name the song by title if you asked me. Anyway, there was a lot to like but also a few tunes I couldn't get into. The 3 song stretch from The Same Boy You've Always Know , We're Going to be Friends and Offend In Every Way was probably my favorite run. Don't think this was the best I've heard from him but pretty darn good for me. 3.5 for me

4 Every time I listen to The White Stripes, I can never seem to quite make up my mind exactly how I feel about them. The duo have a distinct sound to them that I certainly don’t dislike and a resulting handful of enjoyable, memorable tunes, but I don’t think they’ve produced anything I would refer to as any kind of all-time favorite. Plus, the more I explore Jack White’s work with this list, the more I’m realizing that his idea of an album is a disorganized assortment of songs that feel about as haphazard as they do indistinct. Like, I listened to this four times and still couldn’t tell you what any one song here is about or even how most go if I tried. And yet, production-wise, this is about as good as the early 2000s garage rock revival scene gets. The raw guitar tone on this album is incredible, and while a lot of the songs blend together, I can’t say I ever really tired of the sound. Hell, I even thought the acoustic numbers sounded pretty solid in their own right, which helped a lot with the pacing. Even the hits manage to feel at home here for an album that doesn’t really offer a lot of context - Fell in Love With a Girl is certainly one of those aforementioned tunes that I’ll almost always find enjoyable (with a great music video to boot), and while I don’t love We’re Going to Be Friends quite as much, it worked for me as a sort of midpoint here. It’ll also always hold a special place in my heart as the opening song to Napoleon Dynamite. That’s about all I have to say on this - it’s a White Stripes album. I was going to give it a 3.5 to match my Get Behind Me Satan and Blunderbuss reviews, but I can’t shake the feeling of this being objectively better, possibly even their best. So, we’ll round up to make what’s probably my most critical review of a 4-star album yet.

Ikke deres beste album.

it's good. not my taste (the slight country twang put me off), but i can see why people like it. 8/10

Amazong

Jack White is a legend on the guitar. I think he’s inventive and interesting. I hear blues in his riffs.

No es el mejor disco de esta banda, aunque mantiene el espíritu libre, blusero y original de otros discos.

Not the best album by The White Stripes, but still enjoyable overall. Fell in Love With A Girl and We're Gonna Be Friends are the two best songs on this album and do a lot of the heavy lifting while a lot of the other songs did not stand out much to me, but they were not bad either. Favorite Track - Fell in Love With a Girl Least Favorite Track - Aluminum ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Bra! Kort och gott! Andra borde lära att man inte alltid måste göra jättelånga album, det kan bli bra ändå. Hör och lär.

It's fine. Not my cup of tea, but also not knocking it. "The Union Forever" is my favorite on this album. Has a 'low rise jeans' vibe overall if that makes sense!

crunchy. classics.

Pretty, pretty, pretty good

Its the one with fell in love with a girl on it.

Resulta que son más que solo seven nation army. 8/10

I'm really familiar with this album, but it was nice to give it another listen because I've been considering getting it on vinyl. It's still pretty good, but not a priority to purchase now.

I think this is one of those bands/albums that either gets you or it doesn't. I wouldn't say it the other way around, because it's not as though there's anything particularly deep or sophisticated to be found here. But for the right person at the right time in the right place, it might… just might scratch some itch deep in your nervous system. That's how I've always felt about Jack White/ The White Stripes. There's just something about the back-to-basics, stripped down, fuck-you-and-what-you-think-about-what-rock-&-roll-is-supposed-to-be…it just does something for me. But I understand why some might not feel the same. 4/5 Highlights: Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground Hotel Yorba Fell In Love With A Girl We're Going To Be Friends

Actually quite good!

A lot of childhood mems for some of these tracks. Fell in Love..., We're Going To Be Friends - all timers. The rest just does blend into eachother a bit. But their style and sound is nothing if not iconic and instantly recognisable.

Not bad, kinda standard alternative. Pretty good. Ryan has heard them before.

4.4/5 one of my favorite songs but second half dies out

Hmmm, i will listen to this again. Once i settled into idk if it was matching my mood or i was matching it but that was good stuff. I’d like to hear more from the white stripes is that likely to happen?

Really fun album, great for my bike rides even tho I zone out a lot

Great Rock Album

I listened to this album today :) My teacher Annie told me about this website. It’s really interesting, It reminds me of my emo days.

I thought it was a decent album

Day847 - i’ve really become a fan of the white stripes lately. i remember “we’re going to be friends” but the album is really good

Personally very relevant to me. This was a big part of the soundtrack of my courtship with my wife and battle with cancer. Musically excellent? No. Played with feeling? Yes. I went in with my finger hovering over the 5 but it doesn't hold up as well as I thought. 4.4

man kannte 1/2 lieder aus dem album, eigentlich ziemlich gut

*2001. *Fell in Love with A Girl and We're Going to Be Friends are the big hits here. *I like Jack White, but a little goes a long way. This album length (40 mins) is about right. *This is better than a 3, but maybe not quite a 4. Feeling generous though, so here we go. RATING - 7.5/10

Pretty good throughout.

Banging it’s a fantastic album.

A raw, stripped-down garage rock record with sharp riffs, tight drums, and a punchy, immediate energy throughout.

2. Paras d

White Stripe highlights: Fell in Love With a Girl, We’re Gonna Be Friends, Hotel Yorba, Dead Leaves and Dirty Ground The rest of the album isn’t quite as strong but it’s still a good album and more precise than some of their later works

4.1 Tiene una de mis canciones favoritas de toda la vida

I came into this with high expectations and joy in my heart. I leave a smaller fan of the white stripes than before. You can hear the lying (about being siblings)in the music. i found the noise of each song to be both too similar and also too varied across the album.

So it's not Elephant, but definitely a harbinger of things to come for them and with a couple songs that still get a lot of play in my car.

No chore here. Not an expert but I can def here led Zepplin and Rolling Stones vibes

I can understand why the White Stripes ceased to exist. After awhile the limitations of a 2-person band runs its course. It was right to acknowledge this situation and move on/break up. The White Stripes album was much better than this iteration for sure. Still, a pretty damn good album: 4 shining stars.

A one time favourite of mine. Still hits in the right places. Such great energy.

I really enjoyed this, but not as much as Elephant - I think the songwriting goes up a notch on that album. This was really creative and fun though, with loads of attitude, and Jack's theatricality on display in tracks like The Union Forever. I'm a fan; I love how they manage to be derivative in the best ways, but also sound utterly original.

Yeah, this is a great album. I'm glad I listened before I died. From the hits to the tracks I'd never heard, the album felt cohesive in a way other white stripes albums struggle to. 7/10

I used to think the Black Keys were so much better than The White Stripes in that debate. But revisiting this, I feel it holds up so much better in the end. Hotel Yorba, Fell in love with a girl, we’re going to be friends, all classics.

this is how i found out we’re going to be friends is by the white stripes. i’m confused and kind of thrown off balance by this revelation. it doesn’t compute with what i know and love about the early 2000s indie film industry but i guess ya live and ya learn.

Escuchado, ya lo tenia en mente, buenos canciones

Good gym album

Jävla ös och alla låtar är precis så långa som de håller för. I can’t wait var farligt nära ett plagiat av heart shaped box med Nirvana. Otroligt, men blev ju rätt sida gränsen till slut.

Hårt och mjukt i fin kombination

Good but wasn’t wowed

Overall fun rock album that has doesnt try to do too much. no real high and lows for me but still a really enjoyable listen FAV: I think i smell a rat, Now mary, Dead leaves in dirty grounds LEAST FAV: NONE

i love jack white 4/5 overall but some of these are 5/5 songs like fell in love with a girl. If i could it would be a 4.5/5

De todo mi gusto

Man, if you're in the mood for the White Stripes they are pretty incredible. Thankfully I was today and this album rocks. It is amazing to me that just a guitar and drum kit (plus some piano) can sound so good. It's also easy to forget how iconic some of Jack White's guitar riffs have become. Excellent album.

Gewoon een goed album

I'm a Hotel Yorba man through and through, so this was a fun one. The last few tracks drag a little bringing it down from perfect.

very good rock beatles ish?

For this genre and music, for a solid record, with no real praise, nor negatives to highlight, I'd go for a 3 stars. But. I love Jack White nasal voice. The pain in his every word. His style of singing. I kinda wish he singed a different genre.

Catchy, no-nonsense garage rock music. Just can't go wrong with it. Faves: Hotel Yorba, Fell In Love With a Girl, The Same Boy You've Always Known, We're Going to be Friends, I Think I Smell a Rat

Better than Elephant

i can tell that we are gonna be friends :) dnf unfortunately :( but i liked what i heard!

Starts off with a bang - "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" and "Hotel Yorba" are among my favorite White Stripes songs. "The Union Forever" is a little annoying to me. "Aluminum" sucks too. Lots of good here though, pretty classic White Stripes.

Awesome

I like

a lot of fun and joy! Love me some stripes!

These guys were just always good.

Review - this was such a fun era of garage rock. It feels like it was just as slick home recordings were becoming possible with laptops and DAWs that there was a (maybe inadvertent?) backlash to the high fidelity sounds taking over rock music. I don't know that White Stripes were really the best band of the bunch back then, but they had some great songs and a great aesthetic. Always loved Meg White's drumming, and while not all the songs are bangers the songs that hit are great. Much dirtier guitar sounds than I'd expected at times, love it Rating - 8/10 Need to hear? YES

Listening to this is like catching up with an old friend. Haven't seen them in a while and it's nice to spend time them. Great songs, recorded simply with no frills. I like it a lot. Will probably be a while before I listen to it all the way through again though.

I was shocked to hear this is their third studio album with how charmingly hectic and garage-rock it still maintains. Like a very crunchy potato chip.

I appreciate this album more as an unc than I did as a boy

still hits

The union forever, Dead Leaves and Dirty Ground, were going to be friends, I think I smell a rat, I Can't Wait, this protector

I really like half the songs but the other half are a bit harsh on my ears. Overall a decent album, though.

Surprised me--almost went 5/5 here.

Solid early white stripes album, highlight is fell in love with a girl

This is a solid 4 bordering on a 5 - plenty of good memories of course as this was big during my university years, it was kind of a perfect fit that way. This band is very inventive and creative and the sound is really fantastic.

Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground Were gonna be friends I can’t wait Offend in every way

Day 18 — The White Stripes — White Blood Cells (2001) Listened: Mar 16, 2026 Genre: Garage Rock / Blues Rock / Alternative Rock Vibe: Raw, stripped-down blues-driven garage rock — just guitar and drums creating a sound bigger than it has any right to be, classic rock energy filtered through lo-fi punk attitude Highlights: • Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground • Hotel Yorba • I’m Finding It Harder to Be a Gentleman • Fell in Love with a Girl • Little Room • The Union Forever • We’re Going to Be Friends • I Think I Smell a Rat • I Can’t Wait • I Can Learn Impression: Great classic rock sound with great guitar riffs from top to bottom. Jack White nails the melodic guitar riffs alongside the vocals and Meg White is a perfect minimalist foil on drums. Remarkable that two people make this much noise and this much melody simultaneously. Rating: 4.3/5 Keep songs? Yes Revisit album? Definitely

I enjoyed this, love the vocal and some blistering guitar. Drums on one track in particular sounded like a skiffle band. Ditch the person banging the drum and get a drummer . Otherwise good album.

Not my favourite of theirs

Hell yeah!

Good album! Some legendary songs! 8.3/10

This is good stuff.

Dead Leaves is such a strong intro track. Not everything is cohesive, but I really enjoyed it

This such a cohesive album. Every song leads perfectly into the next song. This is raw punk at its best.

A really dope album. Love the vintage distortion of the instruments and Jack's voice. Very bluesy in ways that demonstrate an homage to the greats. Eclectic tastes between the two of them. Highlights: I'm Finding It Harder To Be A Gentleman, Fell In Love With A Girl, We're Going To Be Friends (ofc)

Punchy and catchy

Still v good

Great memories of playing this on repeat on my old 32MB MP3 player back in 3rd year art class

Just raw and wriggling.

Very good

Kicking off my journey with one I already own. I picked this one up back in... oh idk 2003-2007 sometime. I got it because I had liked Elephant. Impressive what you can do with just 3 (4 if you include vocals) instruments. The White Stripes manage to carry maximalist intensity minimalistically. This one's a slightly different beast compared to Elephant (pun not intended but I'm also not sorry). It takes a little time to warm up to. It's (intentionally) jagged. It goes out of it's way to be the antithesis of what was popular at the time (super polished, hyper manufactured). I appreciate that about it but I understand why some people wouldn't like it. It's not something I would recommend to just anyone.

Decent 8

Gran banda, punk rock americano, muy disfrutable

I could always take or leave the White Stripes - I liked a few of their songs, but wouldn't have listened to an album. This one surprised me, then: really enjoyed it, pretty cohesive and strong throughout.

I grew up with this album, it was one of the first records I bought, so it’s a hard one to rate. Relistening to it, it struck me that it’s really more than the sum of its parts. I’d say 1/3 of the songs are great, and the other 2/3 are fine to good, but the songcraft is far less important than the aesthetic sensibility and Jack White’s youthful chip-on-his-shoulder attitude. In truth this album was a hugely original objet d’art that really had no place in the contemporary popular music scene (Linkin Park, Gorillaz, Daft Punk and Jay Z on one side; Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Strokes on the other). It triggered a garage-rock mini-revival from lesser imitators who never captured the intensity and mystery of this particular act. It’s hard to imagine now but there was a really special time where Jack White was not a “famous rock musician” but rather an outsider folk artist and this album captures it beautifully.

Muy bien disco de una gran banda

We’re going to be friends. (16 songs, 40 mins) 3/2/26

(Zusammen mit "This is it" von den Strokes natürlich). Geht Hart. Macht Spaß. Abfahrt - kommt in die Auto-Fahr-Rotation.

My second favourite song about white blood cells since Houmous & Chutneys ‘Leukemia Love’ 3.9 13/16 I Can’t Wait

3,5 ster

Crunchy rock-and-roll garage energy helped cement The White Stripes as a band emblematic of the style and always due for a relisten.

I liked the album. Jack vocals wear me out after a full album, but the guitar and drums are worth it.

Solid album from my early 20s. Some great tracks on here that instantly transport me back to going out and putting money in the jukebox. I get the drumming fits the sound overall, but it's a little one note and repetitive throughout their repertoire. 4/5 I like a bit more complexity to my drumming.

Cerramos semana corta con algo superlativo: el disco, la banda y Jack White. Sólo agregar que es una banda que ya es parte del acervo musical clásico del rock y que Jack White es un pequeño prodigio. Muchas gracias y hasta el lunes

Good album. Had some classic songs I will replay, we are going to be friends was a song I’ve heard in film but definitely was the stand out for me.

Great, rough, old fashioned but at the same time so fresh and modern.

The White Stripes are always fun. I never really know why his voice and often dissonant guitar works for me. But it does.

Enjoyable!

Kinda instant 5.... Honestly, listened to this last year and it hit even harder, this a big one for me but on re-spin not sure it's a 5... Wow This amazing

I really didn't appreciate how good the White Stripes were when they first came around. This is superb

Simple, original, good.

My favourite White Stripes album I’ve listened to so far. Enjoyed it the whole way through and loved Jack White’s voice. I had this crazy moment of nostalgia when hearing Hotel Yorba, haven’t heard that song in probably 20 years.

New album for me. (I had a later Jack White solo album, but no White Stripes albums.) Right from the first song I found it exciting. Seems like virtually all are fine songs, a mix of styles and energy levels but dominant impression is a punk tradition. (Reading about the album I see that it's often referred to as "garage rock", okay.) I liked the really nice (but not flashy!) guitar playing, neat use of overdubs (not too much). Songs didn't sound same-y even though using limited sonic palette - effective variety in riffs and feels. I think I will probably replay this over time as a straight through album. I may like it even better as I get to know the songs/lyrics better. As of today, I rate it Very Good, 8/10 :-)

Meg and Jack 💯

This one grew on me as it progressed from start to finish.

Tosi vahvaa musiikkia, tulee mielee 2000 luvun musa

I used to think the White Stripes were dumb, but I've 100% changed my mind. Mostly because of White Blood Cells. This is just fun.

We're Going to be Friends brings back a ton of memories.

So angst

пожалуйста, дайте бас. вспомнила 2019 год.

A musical awakening for me when I first heard it at 14 still sounds great today

How great were The White Stripes? It makes me kinda sad that there aren't many bands who know who they are and pull it off so expertly as The White Stripes did. Everything, from the musical influences to the visual aethetic, was so meticulously crafted, yet sounds so effortless and immediate. It really is impressive. Their third album was the one where they cleaned and refined their sound (a bit) and set the stage for the big breakthrough of the following album. Not to say there weren't iconic and groundbreaking moments during this era of the band. For one, the incredibly creative music video for "Fell in Love With a Girl" was an instant classic. The White Stripes were true visionaries who expertly rode the wave of change of rock music at the turn of the century. Nobody did it quite like them. Key tracks: Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground Hotel Yorba I'm Finding It Harder to Be a Gentleman Fell in Love With a Girl We're Going to Be Friends I Can't Wait

gostei mas achei que gostaria mais ainda. é isso.

Another great one today, first one from the White Stripes for me on this list. A strong entry, a really good album, but for me, it does lack something to reach the perfection, therefore I will give it strong 4 stars.

Great album

When Jack White surpassed Jack Black.

This album is great. You get the old school rock thing that almost sounds like a less manufactured version of a Twenty One Pilots album. I can't believe I've never heard this before. It's imperfect, but that's a good thing. I hate the corporate manufactured crap that seems to be the only thing being released nowadays. Get me more of this. I think my favorite part of the album was the vocals. They're gritty and they sound great. Even when Jack goes for a high note, he doesn't try to blend his chest voice and head voice. Instead, he just goes for it. It isn't a sound that is normally considered good technique, but it works so well for what this album is trying to be.

I did not write down my thoughts really but I liked :)

i really liked this! a fun vibey time. sorry i'm not good at reviewing albums. "hell yeah" is my review for this one. i did mix up the white stripes and the smiths for a second

Elephant and Get Behind Me Satan were both 4-star endeavours. This one is similar, but it also has this raw star-power, this easygoing virtuosity, that the others lack. Except for the vocals, which are a little wacky. In all the upbeat songs, White's vocals are best described as "slightly unhinged". And in some cases, it's louder than the mood calls for. Hotel Yorba is a standard acoustic guitar track, but the singer is hollering lines like he's being chased by the local sheriff. This Protector makes a perfect case for a soft, intimate vocal to match the solo piano instrumental – but White is still there shouting and parading around the stage. In contrast, his vocal in We're Going to Be Friends is, I think, the correct iteration of Jack White's "ballad" vocal. It's an altogether more laid-back (less serious?) sound than other White Stripes records I've heard. The opener is excellent: great classic-rock sound with that sweet descending bassline (I-VIIb-VI-VIb-V) that will make literally any song at least passable. Fell In Love With a Girl is also bloody fantastic, and far too short for comfort. The vocal distortion is something you see a lot with Muse, and it seems like both bands picked it up around this time. Blistering speed and energy make this a near-perfect track. Not everything shoot straight past, though. The White Stripes are perfectly capable of holding down slower tempos, such as in the dark, intense The Union Forever. (Shoutout to the strange vocals-plus-drumsticks middle section in that track.) The Same Boy You've Always Known sticks with a similar slowish tempo, trying out a hybrid country-rock sound – with great results, I think. None of the songs overstay their welcome, which could be viewed as a disadvantage by some prog fans, but not this guy. 16 songs in 40 minutes is great. The only downside, really, is that the songwriting isn't *that* interesting. And as with their upcoming album Elephant, I feel there isn't much more to glean from repeat listens. The recording, instrumentation, and mixing is all very straightforward. And yes, that is a bad thing. Whoa. That intro to I Can't Wait is really similar to Nirvana's Heart Shaped Box. For a moment I thought I'd gone to shuffle. 4/5 Key tracks: Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground, Fell In Love With a Girl, We're Going to Be Friends, Offend In Every Way

I might have missed the best window for White Stripes, but this hits me as a good album.

White stripes!!!! Love. This one is not as good as some but still good

Great!

There are a couple stand out tracks on this album but the whole things really holds together and when the end comes you wonder how long you’ve been listening. I like the lyric style and the production, it’s really good but hasn’t stayed with me like some others.

A great album from start to finish. Simple guitar riffs and minimal instruments. Reminded me at the time of the purity of rock. Rating 4 stars. Fave track - we are gonna be friends.

Very solid. Felt like an exciting band

One of their best!!

Never heard this album, but familiar with some of the singles. Heavy grunge rock vibes

The breakthrough album by The White Stripes. Despite a divorce, Jack and Meg carried on recording and even created some of their best work, incorporating garage rock into their blues rock style. Despite having some of their best songs, there's also a fair amount of filler here. But the strong points really make up for them.

only kind of white supremacy I can get behind

sounds just as good today as it did in 2001 🖤

Solid album from a solid band.

A few absolute classics on this album, a little too bloated to be 5 stars, but an easy 4. Most of what needs to be said has been mentioned on other reviews, but to be able to create something so fresh for the time with only 2 band members will always be the legacy of this album and the white stripes in general

A solid 4. No complaints.

THAT TONE! The White Stripes rule. I just love how distinct their sound is, and even as weird as they are, I feel like they rarely miss while still covering a pretty wide range of styles and vibes. Best Track: Fell In Love With a Girl

aside from the basic We’re Going To Be Friends, there are actually quite a few good songs and ones I haven’t heard in a while. I really liked Fell In Love With A Girl, it’s always been my favorite from this band. The last two songs were surprisingly good and the only one I didn’t get was the rat one.

I think me and this album are gonna be friends... or like acquaintances. I mean yknow. It's alright.

Great!

A great album, but not my favorite by them

So hard to make simple rock music that isn't grating and this is just front-to-back classics

Love the heavy guitar

There is a reason Jack White appears alongside Jimmy Page and The Edge in 'It Might Get Loud'. He is the pre-eminent guitar player and musician of his era. Folks may argue about the pedigree of The Edge, but nevermind. Few people have created such a successful fusion of southern blues guitar and flat-out rock n' roll with original lyrics that transcend the usual relationship tropes. His improvisation and experimentation beget a new category of music that is his very own. White's energy and guitar virtuosity often obscure the fact that he's also a great songwriter. Meg, of course, is often overlooked as some kind of basic drummer. Although the drum signature for most of the songs may not be the kind of spangled complexity of say, Neil Peart or the also wildly underrated drumming of Karen Carpenter, Meg is nevertheless a fabulous drummer with a great sense of subtlety, energy and style that carries these songs to another level.

Du bon rock qui fait plais

Classic

A great album, love the raw quality of the recording.

Solid 4/5

Pretty amazing album, most of the tracks are so solid. You can feel the garage rock/blues. They were aiming for on every one of the tracks, very DIY project. Solid four stars.

What a noise 2 people can make.

fell in love with a girl 2001 united states rock

4.5. I adore this record and the garage rock revolution it kicked off. Context is everything, and this was the kick in the ass the rock world need at just the right time. Jack’s playing is raw and world beating. Justice for Meg too.

Jack White is one of those guys that you think has been around since the 80's, but he hasn't. Seven Nation Army has one of those riffs that will just live on forever and is just iconic. I really liked this album because of that grungy garage band sound. I know they originally did bluesy stuff, but i'm more of a fan of their rock and this album delivered. White Stripes were part of the 2000's rock revival and it's unfair to criticize Jack White for it. They were a good band and it's natural for people to emulate it. Whites Stripes are undeniable though and even though they're not my favorite band, their influence on the industry is undeniable.

Favorite White Stripes Album, always a fan of their blend of Detroit & Nashville

Fell in love with a girl may be the perfect two minute song

A good album. I remember listening to this so much when it came out. This reminds of Washington state because that’s where I bought it. Good music. Great video.

I have a personal fondness for the album, but this feels more like The White Stripes' breakout album rather than their big album. Elephant or Icky Thump is probably the big album to check out. You can feel when this was probably made, with this and The Hives being that garage rock revival period.

Good album by a good band. Maybe not as good as Elephant, but I'm grateful that 'Fell In Love With A Girl' was such a perfect song because that's how I found this band.

My dad used to (actually I think he still does) listen to some of these songs, reminds me of my childhood. Super good

Great album

❤️🤍

freaking amazing !! only didnt like a few songs but other than those few, 8/10 !!

garage rock is not my fav subgenre of rock but this is surprisingly fun and most of all really good.

Was a fun album to listen to, felt like an intentional flow between songs to be listened to as a complete album. Not sure if it just caught me at a good time but the more raw garage band sound was really enjoyable. Only one song was too grating for me (Aluminium) and actually ruined the experience a bit but a good variety otherwise to keep it fresh. Fav song was "We're going to be friends". It's not as Iconic as Elephant but still really good, Probably 4 stars I liked this album a fair bit actually. There were a lot of songs I enjoyed which included Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, Fell In Love With a Girl, We're Going to Be Friends, and Now Mary. I would not be mad if this album came on again in the future but I am not sure how often I will revisit it. 4 stars. Oh also, I never knew We're Going to Be Friends was by this band. Crazy stuff to find out.

Great disc, was pretty revolutionary when it came out. I think i Got the disc from a BMG offer! 😂

Blast from the past! Loved this album, so many great songs. Highlights: dead leaves and the dirty ground, we’re going to be friends 4/5

Excellent love beautiful work.

Beautiful guitar tone

So much depth, so few instrumenta. Love this album. It was only a couple years ago I got the Citizen Kane reference.

Lyrically Great, falls apart a bit at the last 4 tracks
