Reviews (page 6 of 13)
Some of the best chord progressions ever written by Jack White. Some really awesome blues rock songs. Gritty, but catchy. Jacks poetry is always interesting, and has a very unique vibe.
Great album by a great band, it's not my favorite by The White Stripes but it is very good none the less! I have loved the white stripes for a long time and this album is definitely one that sticks out!

It was good. Nothing I'm dying to run out an see live. But I enjoyed parts of it.
3.5
Clearly their early records are more enjoyable than the latest ones; more spontaneous, rawer, rougher on the edges, a bit more all over the place. I was never really into the garage revival, but this is good shit nonetheless.
I love punk rock in general
Kinda scream. The same boy.. Is kinda nice tho
What I really liked about this album are the voice, the guitar tone, the little details that they sometimes add and the diversity (like the fusion with country). And because there's really nothing more to say about this album, I can affirm that this was a really fun and great experience.
I approached this album with some hesitation and apprehension. Having heard it many times in the past, it evoked memories from a period of my life I'd rather forget. However, upon listening, I found it surprisingly enjoyable. Revisiting the album made me appreciate its quality and relevance during its time.
Pre-listening: exciting, a band from my teen era! I have only ever listened to Get Behind Me Satan in full. During listening: absolutely delightful to revisit this sound. It brings me back. I love the grimy, grinding sound of early 2000s indie rock, and The White Stripes encapsulate a lot of that. Love them. Listened to it twice today.
Feels like a mix between the Beatles and nirvana with a little ska
As I said before - Jack White just gets rock and roll. Makes things sound so easy. This album is just so raw. The drumming is so simple but so unique. Great band. Great album, but I prefer the more polished sound they got later.
We're going to be friends
Increíble, genuinamente no pensé que me fuera a gustar tanto y ahora es la única razón por la que decido seguir con esto Awuwuuu
Клевый альбом, но супер трека нету
Absolute classic. Tons of hits. One of the white stripes top 3 albums easily. It still is super bloated and long however. But still a must listen, and most likely you already have.
It's hard to not give this 5 Stars, but knowing the fully-realized Elephant is on the horizon, makes this proof of concept a 4.5
It’s so simplistic it’s hard to define what makes it so great. They have mastered the art of rock.
Surprised that i really enjoyed this. Some tracks remind me of the doors and good to know there is more interesting songs than seven nation army
Enjoyed this far more than I expected to, may be because of the hipster glasses I'm wearing tho
god bless Jack White
A really great album. Between hearing Elephant a few weeks ago, and this album today, I actually like the White Stripes more than I realized. That being said, Elephant is the stronger of the two albums. This was is a little more chaotic and doesn’t hold together as well. “We’re Going to be Friends” has been a favorite song of mine for ages, but it sticks out like a sore thumb on this album. Still gave a bunch of tracks to enjoy again and again, so I like it overall.
Good tunes reminding me of teen days - thanks!
Previously rated: Get Behind Me Satan (4/5) ****************************** Solidly entertaining album. I knew We're Going to be Friends well from multiple viewings of Napoleon Dynamite. A couple others sounded familiar like they were in a commercial or something. Big drums sounds, distorted guitar and vocals which were a bit annoying at points.
Fun. I love Jack White's voice. I didn't know they toured with Sleater-Kinney and Pavement. I should explore this more.
A 4, bordering on 4.5. Maybe a 7 Nation Army away from being a 5. A number of fun, 2000s Alt rock hits, including some I wasn't really familiar with, but definitely the kind of album you want to see from this list.
Some total bangers on this album. These guys rock pretty hard and I enjoy most of the songs.
At the time The White Stripes felt like a breath of fresh air - a stripped-back, old school garage rock band hitting the mainstream. They're still a good listen, but with a bit of hindsight, maybe didn't deserve all the hype they got.
Used to jam to this back in the day, good shit🤘
Hotel Yorba was my entry to The White Stripes and this was the first album of theirs that I bought. Fresh sounds, interesting vocals and writing, good variety of tone - I like this album quite a bit.
White stripes for me are a hit and miss - I do feel like they try to give the audience something different, but I'm not sure they always hit the spot. Mostly enjoyed it
8/10 really good would listen again
This was pretty good, I think it would require a few more listens to determine if I'd add it into my rotation.
норм рокешник базовый чем то арктик манкис предсказали
Like this one 🫡
Good, but not sure if I liked the flow of the album - I more so liked the individual songs but not necessarily as an album
White Blood Cells is who The White Stripes are. Raw, tight bluesy, punk rock. Fell in Love With a Girl, is as simple of a masterpiece you’ll ever hear. 8.8/10
I know some people are amazed at the guitar and the simplicity. I just always find Jack White to be kinda a one trick pony. Good. Not great.
Very good.
Good
good record, really enjoyed it, had a more punky feeling
I have only ever dipped my toe in with this band, dabbled if you like. So I listened to this one from start to finish and pretty much enjoyed all of it.
I fell in love with a girl, a classic, never gets old. Didn’t know hotel Yorba, it was fun. The same boy you’ve always known gave me Jeff Buckley vibes
Not only they aren't siblings, but they also DIVORCED when doing this album? You got me fooled Mr. White and you too Mrs. White. Death to all of them. The album itself is kinda aight. 3.5/5
Alright. Ok. Interesting. Big potential here. Well. Kind of big. I’ve heard about it the White Stripes and the danger of being overplayed is looming large over the darkened figures, uh, mugging? The band? After a hard zero out of England yesterday, let’s see if we can be liberated by the freedom fighters of the good ol’ US of A (not good or even really that ol’. worst country in the world by a land slide). Oh my sweet lord. Fuzz. I can’t believe every album here that has any substance of sound seems to get panned by the “WOUD NOISES SCARE ME” crowd, but it’s nice to hear some vitriol and punch. Solid. Did not expect this sound. Not sure if it’s a cover, but either way. A fun track. Another nice track. Hard to even discern highlights. Loving this so far. A classic. A hit. A touch overplayed, but that vocal bridge into the refrain. So fantastic. Send this man… to TOLEDO. NOOOOAHSHAHH PLEASE GOD NO. NOT TOLEDO. A beautiful track with a horrifying prospect. The strange yodel interlude didn’t even lose me. Can’t believe I haven’t explored White Stripes “deep tracks” further. The Union Forever?? Workers anthem. All my boys support Local 309. Random union number so I don’t know if it’s like international clowns united or whatever. This song is like Indie Black Sabbath. Incredible, well, until the a capella part. Still a haunting close. Yeah this song is the best so far. The one slight misstep for me. Just a little boring. Not bad by any means, but a little bit if a reminder that real life exists on this journey through excellent music. Oh hell yeah. Napoleon Dynamite intro. Despite being 5 when this puppy dropped, this is in my exact wheelhouse. A pretty song, with a fun association. I’ll ignore the one lip smack because this is a classic. The almost western elements to so many of the riffs works so well. Creates another fantastic atmosphere here. A little more indie/Radiohead peering through here. Not as much my speed but still super likeable. We are nowhere bad. Oh the Planet Caravan voice effect. Allow me to hit this comically large bong that is rigged into the piping of my home. I don’t even need it to enjoy this thing. Who do you think you are?? Huh?? Huh?? I’m very demanding today. I’m all amped up on terrible coffee that hits the tastebuds like a shot of whiskey. Oh and this album. Whoa. Another country tinged song. Honestly, a little thin. Of course I’m always honest, but my writing proficiency is dwindling as time marches on. I’m sure I’ll be stricken with illiteracy as soon as our brains are mined to produce endless profit for 150 despots in 5 years or so. We’re so close to the promised land! Another spaghetti western accompaniment. Can I still say that? Doesn’t it just mean “directed by an Italian?” So can I call movies directed by white people “Gentrification Comedies?” Maybe “School Shooter Period Pieces.” We’ll workshop it. And the piano plays us off. A decent closer with some excellent vocals. How can two people make something this heavy that isn’t purely metallic? While not perfect, at times it’s Sabbath run through a 2000s indie filter with flourishes of poetic brilliance. This shows that you can be the 3 I’s: intellectual, interesting, and introspective (Sorry Mr. Angle, copyright infringement) while still playing the living hell out of your instruments. Don’t go quietly into that art rock album, posers. Put this in your comically large bongs, smoke it and exhale the billow into the annals of the hall of classics. There it will linger until I damn well say so. 4.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, Fell in Love With a Girl, Expecting, Union Forever, We’re Going to be Friends, Offend in Every Way, Aluminum
White Blood Cells suffers from late-album filler-itis. The first half of this album is an easy five, just purely stripped down and gritty garage rock. Unfortunately the quality takes a sharp downturn a little past the halfway point and becomes pretty boring. 4/5
Quite good.
I expected to dislike this album a lot more than I did, I was not a fan when they first came out, but it was enjoyable!
I never gave this a chance before. I am a big fan of the lo-fi sound. There are a lot of hits on this one. I will be listening to it way more.
Rock music had been struggling a little bit when this album came out and breathed new life into the genre. It's raw and unapologetic and leaves you wanting more.
The white stripes did their northern Canadian tour in 2005, stopping in Whitehorse and doing an afternoon show downtown under blue skies. It made me realize the amount of organized noise two people can make if they really try. They grow on me a little more every time I hear them. I do like their later stuff more, but I do like the rawness of these tracks. 3.5
Excellent debut and very much captures the feeling of 2001. Has grown on me steadily since its release.
I liked that all of the songs were short. Started off strong, I liked the garage band vibes. I remember listening to the Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend podcast back in the day and they used We're Going to be Friends as their theme song, didn't know it was by the White Stripes. Kind of fun, low 4.
I was talking to Alex about my feelings towards REM today. I feel pretty much the same way about the white stripes. Always solid, never really blows me away
From the squealing feedback right off the bat this album announces it is going to be quick and dirty. "We Are Gonna Be Friends" feels so innocent it's nearly out of place but it is a nice grace from otherwise hard, fast tracks
Short songs, sparse production, garage rock retro sound. I enjoyed this quite a bit, just about enough for 4 stars, but nowhere near 5. No one song stood out as being incredible, but similarly, none of them were bad. I feel it deserves a relisten.
Solid outing.
Great distortion, lots of energy. Production is really my kind of thing - guitars are wide and airy, drums are big and warm with such a characterful vocal over the top. Feels pretty alive, this stripped down and fuzzed out americana! Favourite tracks: Dead Leaves, Hotel Yorba (great opening combo!), Offend In Every Way, I Can't Wait
Le générateur a été clément pour ma fête, contrairement à la blague Swiftienne de l’an passé. Du bon rock straight forward, j’suis jamais contre
Really good. Always enjoy jack white.
Divers album, paar hele leuke en mooie nummers, af en toe wat mindere
4.16⭐️
One of my favorite White Stripes albums.
I will never criticize the white stripes. I am so biased, jack white is one of my favorite musicians ever, some of this isn't revolutionary anymore but that's just cause everyone stole from the white stripes. Meg is a fantastic drummer and anyone who says otherwise is stupid, she's so essential to these songs.
I put this album on while in a small rural town in central California. One of those quintessential "one stop light town" type places. Everything had kind of a drab beige veneer, people walking along the side of the road on a dirt "sidewalk", a liquor store on every corner... The kind of city that nurtures the kind of angst that inspires kids to make this raw, distorted, barely held together garage rock. I've been a fan of this album since it was fresh, but it was the perfect time and place to give it another listen and feel more immersed into it than ever.
Indie taste heresy #257: I bore quite quickly listening to The White Stripes. I'm bumping this up to a 4 as it's got so much strong stuff on it but it's marginal. 40 mins but feels like 55.
This one brings back a lot of memories. I’ve been listening to this album a lot in high school. Now after all these years it feels like it didn’t get old or anything, it’s even better. Pure fun and rock and roll, so much better than all of those countless 70s hard rock albums on this list. I’m not giving it a 5 since I gave one to Elephant and I think it’s better but yeah this one is as close as it gets
4.5
Really enjoyable rock album
The first half of this album is one of the best starts to an album ever - sadly does not sustain to the end
7/10. I believe that The White Stripes were pretty badass. Although, I don't think that they need three inclusions in the series.
Yep. This is very good. Rock. Me likey.
Excellent. The best stuff is sort of front-loaded, though, which means by the end of the album the garage noisiness starts to grate just a bit.
Best White Stripes Album I have heard so far. I can get behind this album.
Love the White Stripes- solid album.
Really like le album
Fantastic album. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to it again.
4-
This album made me buy an electric guitar. It was like the big fish of rock and roll was in the bottom of the boat almost dead, but with a mighty kick of its tail leaped back in the water to survive another day. And I will always have a crush on Meg.
Another classic.
Great indie/psychedelica rock.
Love this album, people still know how to make rock music even in the 2000s.
Listening to this reminds me of being in college. Some classic hits on this album. Never thought Meg White was that good of a drummer though. Most songs sound the same. Jack White is a great guitarist.
The cover artwork of The White Stripes' White Blood Cells is a striking visual statement that encapsulates the band's raw energy and commentary on the music industry. Featuring Jack and Meg White surrounded by a swarm of cameras, it cleverly critiques the invasive nature of media attention. The stark red, white, and black color scheme enhances its boldness, making it instantly recognizable. This artwork not only reflects the duo's aesthetic but also embodies the tension between artistic integrity and commercialism. Overall, it serves as a powerful introduction to the album's themes, earning it a solid four-star rating for its creativity and impact. Album artworks rated: 16/1001 Music's alright.
This was pretty good, a lot better than I was hoping. I could hear lots of Blues influences with a very raw feel. I would definitely listen to this again.
i forgot how many bops The White Stripes had - the beauty of it is that it really isn't that complicated as far as instrumentation or song structure. The incredible takeaway is the fact the structure and the development of the hooks, the drums, the sudden changes in tempo and style of a track, and the wide ranging subject matter. Really a wonderful album.
Not as good as I remember, but still pretty decent. Black Math(s) and Fell in Love With a Girl are the obvious stand outs
The only White Stripes song I was familiar with was “the Napoleon Dynamite” song, which is on this album. For the most part, I really enjoyed this album, finding it eclectic but still listener friendly. I will save it and listen to it again. I see it as 3.5 stars, so I will round it up to a four.
Liked this, a lot of good songs and felt quite varied in terms of vibe
fell in love with a girl é uma das maiores pedradas do ROCK anos 2000. esse é bem melhor que o Elephant, né. a sonoridade dele é mais suja, garage rock mal produzido propositalmente, pica demais. as vezes o rock compensa.
Cock 7
Stupendous. The White Stripes single-handedly revived a dying art form 🤘
yeah sure
Didn’t expect to like this one as much as I did! Good dirty guitar, catchy rhythms and melodies. Good stuff. The first half is Five Star quality but sadly it does drop off a bit after that.
Really good, but begins to drag by the end
A breath of fresh air in 2001, which more than merits its renown. Say what you will about the chops, they come up with some great riffs, catchy songs and good ol' sense of energy and fun.
Bangin
Was pleasantly surprised how much I liked most of the songs on this album! Everytime a song seemed like it was going off the deep end a bit of melody happened and sucked me back in.
The feedback to start Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground is a perfect start to an album...similar to the hiss/echo effect with LZ on "Immigrant Song"...I respect bands who think about "how should we make the first seconds of this album cool". There are some awesome musical ideas on this album and I give Jack a ton of credit for all of these songs being 2-3 minutes. He distills the song idea...rocks out...finishes the song. I find this album quite listenable but it doesn't get to the heights of making it a "classic". I love the spirit of Meg but at points her splashing away on the crash cymbal gets tired after 16 tracks
At times the simplicity of the song structure and the spare arrangements on this album are part of the appeal (fell in love w a girl, dead leaves on the dirty ground, hotel yorba) and make the sound feel fresh and original. But in other places, the playing (especially the drums) feels a bit too bare-bones, less intentional and more like a demo than a fully realized song (I can learn, This Protector). I think at this point, Jack White was still more an artist than a musician - it's not until Elephant that he really merged the two and reached his full potential. Still, this album breathed life (if only briefly) back into the genre (rock) that's given me more joy than almost any other art-form in life, so for that it gets 4 starts.
More than half of the songs are classics, but stuff toward the end feels like unfinished filler tracks. Still in my top Jack White projects.
The spark of a generation. Not a bad track.
So good. Almost a 5. Jack White is a beast on the guitar. Probably my favorite album from them.
Good album, with some real classics and some less iconic but really good songs like The Union Forever
i really like how they combined a folky sound with rock or like a punk rock. very good!!!!
A great album. I have all of their CDs from back when they were popular.
An unholy mix of The Doors, The Rolling Stones with hints of The Velvet Underground. This will undoubtedly grow on me if I let it. Levels on the album are way too high with excessive clipping. Loudness wars write large. It's a pity. 4/5
Favourite songs: Fell In Love With a Girl, Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, I'm Finding It Harder to Be a Gentleman, Offend in Every Way, I Can't Wait, Hotel Yorba, We're Going to Be Friends Least favourite songs: Expecting, Aluminum 4/5
Gear: Abyss DIANA MR Artwork: 🔴⚪️+🥷 Production: 🎧🥩🤌 Music: 🎸🥁🥩⚡️🤘 Rating: 🔴⚪️🔴⚪️(🥷)/5
When the White Stipes hit I had moved out ofy parents house and was barely making ends meet. I couldn't afford the CDs and while downloading music was definitely a thing, I didn't download this. So I kind of missed the boat on the White Stripes. I heard a few songs here and there and they were great though. Going back now, I find that this album, as well as the others are super inconsistent. The bangers are top tier bangers. But there is a lot of filler. I love the moxy of this album. But I was bored between the bigger set pieces and the end of the record just sort of trails off.
A powerful album I have trouble sometimes finding an emotion core but some great songs and urgency to the playing.
Loved the sound of this album, great listen and will add to my library
I liked this one better than the other albums of theirs. They had some good songs on here so I’m being generous and rounding up to a 4.
Very solid album, I didn't know that they did "We're Gonna Be Friends" til now so that was a fun little revelation. Really like their sound, very stripped back, garage band feel which I really dig. Reminds me of "Get Free" by the Vines for many of the songs. Great album loved that the length of the songs varied and none were obnoxiously long.
Really enjoyed dead leaves and the dirty ground
Great opener, probably better than Elephant which is their more popular album.
Lot of variety on here, well worth the listen
Wasn't too bad. Some good tunes, some familiar tunes. 4/5.
Kick ass album that combines the best raw elements of punk and rock.
This was pretty good. I will say that I definitely prefer the more rock based songs rather than some of the more folky ones, as the vocals and instrumentals are better on those. Low 4.
I like Jack White and the White Stripes. He is unique and different, but in a way that works. They are Gothically playful....like Now Mary is this weird little interlude that is fun, yet sad. The only thing I would say is it is a little pretentious (in a good way) and its not cohesive. Each song is its own little work of art, but they would belong in different wings in the museum.
This was a fun listen, lots of good rock songs.
Overall a solid album. Jack White has a distinct style that you either like or hate and I like it most of the time. Most of the songs are varied enough that his nasally singing style doesn’t grate on my ears too much. A lot of foreshadowing here for what their next couple albums would sound like and that is a good thing.
I love everything White Stripes, it's the rawness and the authenticity, not the musical perfection! Even though Jack White is a fantastic guitar player. The band definitely belongs in the list - not sure about this specific album, I think there are some I like more.
Great alt rock album featuring Fell In Love With a Girl and We're Going to Be Friends. 16 songs all under 4 mins resulting in a 40 minute album of somewhat brief songs but they mostly flow. The Union Forever is a cool song I hadn't heard prior.
Fun rock album, guitar playing is awesome
The most exciting and enduring collection of songs the Stripes ever put to tape, to my ears.
This high energy album reminded me that you can still rock during a time boring techno dance music.
Detroit guys get an extra star. Deal with it.
Something of a modern classic and another one that featured prominently in my university years. Not all of the experiments paid off so it has a few misses to go with the likes of Hotel Yorba and Fell In Love With a Girl, but overall it was great to see the blues-garage-rock crossover at the time and at a time when minimalist production was peaking. It's hard not to love the style and aesthetic as well. They were just so damn cool.
Love the guitar tones on this. Jack White's range of distortion varies widely across the album and there's a lot of great hits through out. A few of the twangier cuts don't hit as hard for me.
Rock n roll.
For me, Elephant is the best White Stripes album, but this is a close second.
Another classic album I own. Lots of familiar sounds and songs. ‘Hotel Yorba’ is a particularly good, non-single track.
good shit
A beautifully structured album, with great contrast in styles, while there are elements that make the White Stripes the White Stripes, there is definitely some experimentation of sounds in this album. Some really standout tracks too. Would absolutely give it another listen and buy it if I saw it. Ironically the most popular song (Fell in Love with a girl) is the worst song on the album. It is the generic 2000s style that I cant stand the you see with the strokes and the Arctic monkeys etc
White Blood Cells is a great album; it's at the cross intersection of folk, shoegaze, and blues. The fact that you hear only guitar, vocals, drums, and even piano, as in This Protector, is mind blowing. The songs seem to have much more substance and layers than one realizes until you actually do.
This era of Jack White is on the short list of my favourite guitarists. The tone is perfect and he’s not bored by it and trying too many effects or showy solos yet. Back half not as good as the first half but a great album.
I’ve never known what genre The White Stripes really fit. They’re edgy, punk almost, with some songs leaning heavily on a metal sound; and then there’s the bluesy rock, ballads and anthem tracks. Im here for it all. Jack’s a master craftsman.
Favourite song - fell in love with a girl 3.5 stars
yeah this one i like. worth listening to again/finding their other albums
Good stuff
This album shows off JW's ability to write a catchy tune. And there are some great ones here. However, others seem like he has just one part of a song, and that's all we get here. 3.5/5 is probably the right number, but can't do that here. I'll lean to 4.
Not his best work - but I’m just a Jack White fanboi
Good stuff from the White Stripes—sometimes a little raw, and I catch myself wishing it were polished just a bit more, but I guess that rough edge is the whole point.
I cant explain it but this is a country album? 10/10 attitude. Stripped down, simple, rock. Pure.
If you can hear a piano fall, you can hear me coming down the hall... Weird, angsty early 2000s masterpiece. Back when they were brother and sister and only wore white and red. This was a true album by a true band from a real scene. Doesn't happen much anymore.
Kyllä tää on tiukka garagerokkilevy! Tykkään kovasti bändistä ja tää on hyvä pläjäys. 4/5
Hyvä garage-levy! 4/5
I forgot how much I enjoy the raw stripped back sound of The White Stripes.
Fell in Love with a Girl - so good Early album for them
I absolutely loved this album when it came out and for years afterward. Lately I’ve begun to feel like maybe I’ve moved past it, but I still think it’s great and deserves to be on this list. That said, I think De Stijl is better, so it’s a 4 star for this
Partly heard before Saved 10/16 Top track: Fell In Love With A Girl
White Blood Cells - The White Stripes (2001) Simples e eficiente. Melhores Músicas:Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, Fell In Love With a Girl, Expecting, I Think I Smell a Rat, Aluminum, I Can Learn Piores Músicas: Hotel Yorba, Little Room, We're Going to Be Friends 3.75/5
Really surprised by how unliked this was in the review section. I feel like people forget how big of a number 1001 really is and for a time in musical history, Jake White was the biggest rock icon out there. This album is solid garage rock. It might not break new ground in a big way, but the White Stripes sound was highly influential. Idk how it was around the world, but i suspect Seven Nation Army (not on this album) made Jake White a house hold name internationally.
Great
White Blood Cells was a pretty enjoyable album. I always love a rough guitar sound in indie rock albums and this album had it in spades really having that fun little garage rock style. Also, some of the songs just went far harder than i was expecting from their names. Like I Think I Smell a Rat had such a goofy title yet ended up going so hard which i just find so funny and the fact that the song, of course, sounds really good. My only real issue with this album is the fact that some of the songs don't go on for long enough in some cases but other than that, this is a fun album i can easily recommend. Best Song: The Union Forever Worst Song: Little Room
the rambling slew of half-formed songs here appeal a lot more to me now than back in the day...that being said i still think it lacks the unique punch and memorability of Jack's best albums 8/10
OK, not outstanding, but not background music. probably improves on multiple listens
Short songs. Upbeat, over-saturated and low-fi
BL: I am aware of "fell in love with a girl", from this album but have not delved further. I remember receiving "Elephant" on this generator before and absolutely loving it, so going back further now in the discography will be a case study of whether rawness and low fidelity captures the essence of a garage rock band more-so than pristine recording. AL: I thought this album had some creative twists and turns, it highlights a formula which would become commonplace by the release of Elephant, cacophonous explosions of garage rock, combined with quieter ballads and spoken word segments. I think this album feels better, but this is likely only because it is a more recent listen, I would have to compare side by side to truly know. I liked this a lot and will certainly be coming back to a lot of the tracks FT: "Fell In Love With A Girl", "The Union Forever", "We're Going To Be Friends", "This Protector" 4/5
Jack White is a Detroit treasure.
Tough to not give it 5 stars, so many great songs. Although I find myself consistently skipping a few.
After checking out the follow-up Elephant, this will be the second White Stripes album I've listened to on this journey. I've already heard the first two songs before - "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" and "Hotel Yorba" - and between those two and "Fell in Love with a Girl", this album starts pretty strong for the garage rock revival that the pair were going for at the time. As far as the pacing goes, I think this album drags a bit toward the end, particularly the instrumental "Aluminum" which I did not care for with the distorted wordless screaming over the droning guitar riff. There are fun tracks sprinkled throughout like "The Union Forever", "Offend in Every Way" and "I Think I Smell a Rat", but at the same time, this effort could have benefited from a trimmed-down tracklist. White Blood Cells may not be as strong as Elephant would follow, but it is still a solid album and gets a light recommendation if you're curious.
Very solid offering from the Whites
Not bad
Went into this with kinda low expectations because I’m not crazy about the garage rock era but damn. This album was actually such a good album. It had the perfect amount of rough but put together sound. The guitars and other instruments all sounded great and there wasn’t any song that felt out of place. No song felt like a filler. Just an overall great album. 9/10
I'm not emo enough to truly appreciate this album but I can appreciate that guitar!
I know this band and I know this record. Straight garage/punk rock. I really enjoyed White Stripes and Jack White as soon as they came out. This is a great record.
And here i thought the song was created specifically for Conan’s podcast.
Man Jack White is so talented. Great songs here and Meg White is a perfect compliment to Jack White's guitar playing. Would give this a 5, but the album is pretty top heavy and has less memorable songs sprinkled throughout. High 4
Solid Album, good reminder to go back to listen to more!
Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground Hotel Yorba Fell in Love with a Girl We're Going to Be Friends
Pretty good. That being said, Elephant is easily their best on the list.
Very nice
who doesnt fucking love the wbc's
Minimal, but usually with a sound that is fuller than two people ought to have. Always creative and interesting, if not always great.
Not my favorite of theirs but pretty solid.
Good stuff. Fell in Love with a Girl and We are Going to be Friends are both excellent little tunes.

Cool rock songs, Fell In Love With A Girl is amazing. I’d recommend. :)
Napoleon Dynamite song
I've enjoyed revisiting this album. There is a small part of me that finds it slightly of its time, but it is nonetheless excellent.
Very strong album and where they really started to define their sound
Jack White is only just barely, barely not a good enough musician to make up for being such a goddamn weird person. Razor thin.
Their sophomore effort (?), a great rock album showcasing their unique sound.
This album is really good until it isn’t. Something about the second half is just draining which is a bummer because that first half is excellent stuff.
I can remember the moment I was introduced to the White Stripes, they appeared on Jools Holland on BBC2 and banged out "Hotel Yorba" and I was all in, 2 minutes of insanity. The acoustic version on the single I bought days later sealed the deal. Simple garage rock that somehow sounds amazing. And this is a Meg White appreciation post
Obviously I know The White Stripes were huge and I knew that at the time, but I never got in to them and don't think I ever consciously listened to one of their records. I figured I'd recognize a handful of these songs for sure, but was not expecting to recognize pretty much every song on the album as instantly being recognizable. I guess I didn't realize how truly ubiquitous they were. They always leaned a bit more bluesy than garage for me, but clearly this is a great rock record from a great band.
Classic White Stripes.
I've always had a soft spot for this era of garage rock revival. I guess the simplicity mixed with the crashing drums and focus on unique guitar play draws me in. The White Stripes were among those in the forefront of this revival in the early 2000s and I'd wager that nearly every human knows at least one of their songs. For the album itself, there's quite a bit packed into the 40 min of playtime. "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" is a great opener, the feverish pace of "Fell In Love With a Girl" always entertains, and even some of the slower, less-known tracks such as "I'm Finding It Harder To Be a Gentleman" and "I Can't Wait" were standouts to me while listening. Jack White isn't the greatest vocalist, and I don't think he is setting out to be, but I think his style, mixed with the drums of Meg White fits the garage rock energy sound well. Now I wouldn't say that this is the greatest White Stripes album, as I think their best stuff is yet to come from this point, but this was a good entry for them to enter the mainstream rock world with.
New album for me, although I know others by the White Stripes. Great mix of alt rock with a pinch of punk here and there. Shows how big a sound you can have while stripped way back instrumentally. 4/5
Little Room FTW
A lot of great rocking tunes

Great lyrics
Great album, great range- 4.5
Heard bunch of times already
garbage rock里怎么藏了首小甜歌
I've heard the album before. I love Jack White's guitar playing and vocals. There is a lot of diverse things going on than might appear at first glance. They achieve a pretty amazing sound with just a guitar and drums. "All they got inside is vacancy"
I just really like what Jack White does.
Classic
Its a good album. I feel like they got better but this is still an indie classic.
love how rough it is in some spots, but its a little underbaked in others
Nostalgic album, really enjoyed revisiting this after so many years. Woo white stripes!
A bolt of lightening when I first heard it. I love how Jack White goes for broke on these songs. Great record.
There are some great songs on here, such as I Can't Wait and Fell In Love With a Girl. The White Stripes have always been quite impressive with how simple yet interesting their songs are. It takes skill to make basic compositions sound somewhat different and have a recognisable sound. The only criticism really is that I'm not always a massive fan of the vocals, though I usually like Jack White.
Fun lyrics, also some folkier sounds at times. Cool chords at times
Great album. I liked 3 of the tracks, the popular ones: Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground, Fell In Love With A Girl, We're Going To Be Friends. But I came close to clicking a bunch of other tracks.
Shades of blues, metal, folk - and somehow it all hangs together. Plus, that Lego video was rad.
Great album.
They ain’t like us.
Muito legal! Vou escutar mais!
Jack White is someone I always wanted to find time to listen to more. Glad this came up today. Strong performances with soft points and straight out thrashing garage rock.
Coole Gitarrensounds, Gesang sehr "Grage"
Pretty good, would listen again.
Fun.
Lekker album, goeie instrumenten, eerlijke emoties
Innovative for its time, instantly recognisable as the white stripes
You can't go wrong with Napoleon Dynamite music
Hotel Yorba was the first song I heard from the white stripes on the radio. I thought. "Okay, another indie band like The Strokes". Then I listened to the full album. The recording is loud and powerful, it hit me in the chest likeThe Stooges' Raw Power...just blew me away. The guitar is something special.
We have arrived, once again, at another band I know very, very well. We’ve had The Beatles, The Who, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Talking Heads. Now we finally can add The White Stripes to this canon. This album is definitely front loaded. I love it, but there’s two distinct levels of quality on what I assume are the two sides of this album. The first half is phenomenal. Signature songs like “Fell In Love with a Girl” and “We’re Going to be Friends” stand out amongst other amazing tracks (see below). There’s variety, from straight up punk-inspired rock (“Fell in Love with a Girl,” “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground”), to almost rockabilly type stuff with “Hotel Yorba” and quiet, gentle stuff like “We’re Going to be Friends.” You even get something irreverent like “Little Room.” But that first half ends and what we get is a collection of what feel like unfinished or underdeveloped tracks and ideas. Nothing is bad by any means, but it doesn’t inspire like the first half. Regardless, the quality is 1,000% here and that first half is nothing short of genius. They were a force to be reckoned with and I hope they play together again one day. 4 stars. Standout Tracks: Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, Hotel Yorba, I’m Finding it Harder to be a Gentleman, Fell in Love with a Girl, Little Room, The Union Forever, We’re Going to be Friends
First time listening to a full White Stripes album and it was a great experience! What an awesome album!
i'll preface this by saying that i think the white stripes are one of the most boring, bland, average, mediocre, three-star bands of the last 50 years. and jack white and his fans are even worse. however,,,,,,,,, I did enjoy this album. it probably helps that I was really into Fell In Love With a Girl in middle school, most likely after I heard it in Weird Al's Angry White Boy Polka. to this day, that song rocks. i wish the rest of the album could capture that level of intrigue and energy, but it wasn't too bad, all things considered. favorites: dead leaves and the dirty ground, hotel yorba, fell in love with a girl, we're going to be friends, offend in every way, I think I smell a rat
Cool sound, most songs sound kinda the same. Stompy, splashy drums without any real carrying rhythm, but awesome guitar tone and cool bluesy arpeggios. Vocals range from slick and badass to whiny and weird. Overall a solid listen with a bunch of relistenable tunes, but definitely some skips in there. Four stars.
This was the first White Stripes album I owned. I saw the Fell in Love with a Girl video on MTV2 and went to a record store the same day to buy the CD. And that is what life was like in 2001. And the album still holds up.
Probably my favorite and most listened to White Strips album
bluesy filtered rock, such heavy riffs and drums, I like this album but remember it being more poppy and easy to listen to, there was a lot of noodling
This is a fine album of blues and metal infected garage style music, though in my view possibly edged by its predecessor, De Stihl. It's one of a run of great albums by Jack and Meg White. The sleeve is rather menacing!
Guays. Detroit garage rock de los 2000's.
I expected much more for this album. I knew "Fell in Love in a Girl" and I listened to it waiting to find songs like that on the album, and no song surprised me too much. But maybe I should dedicate more time to listening to the songs much more quietly
A more well polished sounding white stripes than on previous albums but still raw, simplistic and hard hitting.
While TWS’s first two albums established their career and sound nicely, it was on this record that they fully found their footing. This album balances the band’s hard-hitting, sometimes grittier, sound with cuts like the intro or “I Think I Smell A Rat,” and juxtaposes that usual sound with their goofier (“Hotel Yorba”) and softer (“We’re Going to be Friends”) sides. This all culminates into an album that may not conclude as strongly as it begins, but nonetheless paints a defining portrait of who Jack and Meg White were and who they were going to be for the next few years.
good, definitely one of those albums where the popular ones are the best and are actually popular for a reason. i think i smell a rat is probably my favourite
I do love this album. 4/5
Very good. I listened to this album a fair amount when it was first released. Overall the album holds up rather well. I almost saw them perform on their tour for this album. Unfortunately the small club they were booked to play in Kansas City went out of business a week or two before their concert and it did not get rescheduled/relocated from what I could find. Then they became huge. You’re welcome.
Man, this band hit when I was in college. I loved them. And I still do.
Pretty good
The first one on the list I did was better but this is still good
I loved this album and it might even be my fav White Stripes album. It's so raw, genuine and imperfect that it's beautiful. I listened to it about ten times this weekend and loved every spin.
4.1/5. listened 1x catchup on 5/8/24.
Best White Stripes album, and I thought it would be a clear 5 star, but modulo the occasional song had not listened to the whole album in at least 10 years or so and some of the less stonger songs on it now sound a bit exhaustive.
Another solid album from The White Stripes.
Very energetic & raw. Just short of full marks in my current judgement.
Ich habe dabei "White Blood Cells", "Elephant", "Get behind me Satan" & "Icky Thumb" einigermaßen gleich bewertet und gehört. "I Can't Wait" finde ich absolut geil!
Boom 7 nations
You don’t listen to this album for the great musicianship, but for fun, unashamed garage rock. And the first four tracks sleiver in spaden. In my opinion, the band work best when they turn up the punk, like in Hotel Yorba and their (imo) best single ever, Fell in Love… However, after the first four great tracks we get three okay- tracks, and that was not what we asked for. We’re going to be friends starts another streak of quality, only abrupted by the unecessary instrumental Aluminium. All in all it’s an uneven album, but the good songs make it a 7/10
yup
This was a fun rockin album. Great guitar work.
4/5 perché ho preferito Elephant, però rimangono dei grandi.
Very nice
still good
Four stars
I mean it's gotta be an essential listen for anyone imo, such good entry rock in its purest form and just so fun.
very energetic, very rock, lots of velocity! overall fun and the vibe never stops
Enjoyed it, grungy, good clean drums, simple, nothing fancy beat wise
nemam nis pametno za rec ali nice
I enjoyed this album more than I expected to. Really good work here
Pretty solid rock and roll listening.
This is a solid album right here. The White Stripes are, in fact, a band I've heard of, but I had really only heard one of their songs before, so getting to experience an album of theirs was an intriguing experience. This is not the album with Seven Nation Army on it, but it is the album that truly kickstarted their career, so I'd say it deserves to be on here in addition to their other album Elephant. If it was just this album, then I'd have some questions, but the two of them both being on the list is something that I can accept. The sound of this album is quite nice. One interesting thing that this album does that I haven't really seen a ton of is that this album goes for more of a quantity over quality approach with the songs. That's not to say that the songs are bad, it's just that there's a higher focus on making more short songs rather than fully fleshing out ideas for specific songs. Fortunately, each song is short, so an album with 16 songs ends up being a tight 40 minutes rather than a 70+ minute slog. I like the singing. I think it fits the overall feel these two were going for. The songwriting is decent. There's a very unique feel with this album that I'm not sure how to put into words. It feels raw, but not too heavy. I guess that's garage rock for you, and this album spearheaded the 2000s revival of garage rock in addition to other albums like Is This It by the Strokes. I don't like this album quite as much as that one, but this one is still pretty good. 4/5.
Feels like a 2000s angsty teen movie soundtrack. Would be good for cleaning music, and Dad would like
Classic album very of it’s time. Brought back some good memories.
The White Stripes - White Blood Cells 4 / 5 I’ve never heard this album before. I’m familiar with the White Stripes and have heard songs here and there and it all sounds pretty much the same. I guess you could say that about a lot of bands. They have a very stripped down guitar, drum and vocal sound. The drum kit sounds minimal as well. Jack White has crossed over and become somewhat of a pop culture figure. I read this is their 3rd album and there’s no covers on it. Sounds like they’re mining the same Blues as Led Zeppelin. There’s high energy rockin’ songs and some mello folky numbers. For just guitar and drums this album sometimes sounds huge. They also sound quaint on the mello numbers. Which is good, this isn’t a continuous blast in the face. That wouldn’t be bad either. I would probably prefer that, but Jack White wouldn’t be the celebrity he is today if that were the case. Whiny vocals that work well. There’s keyboard on a song and piano on another. The songs are relatively short. Only a few surpass 3 three minutes. This album came out in 2001. It’s post grunge retro classic rock garage blues and really catchy. I suppose there’s a punk influence underlying everything. Bonus points for the song “We Are Going To Be Friends” being on the opening credits of the movie “Napoleon Dynamite”. Also the standout rocker song on the album is “Fell In Love With A Girl” it’s a catchy one and most people know as “The Lego Video”. This album flows really well from rockers to mellow tunes; everything seems like it belongs here. Overall the production of the album sounds great. It’s effective.
great
Guays. Detroit garage rock de los 2000's
Whilst it’s become a very familiar sound now, it was awesome and fresh when it was new. Still a good album.
Nice
I think this might be my favorite album by this artist. Lots of very approachable rock and roll tunes.
First time I’ve listened to this (although tons of songs I’d heard before no realising they were from this) - it was great, the first half especially.
I've always been fond of The White Stripes, even though I'm not usually a fan of loud, brash music.
This is a great album and it is raw and a wonderful sound. And all this with a scaled back production.
I dunno it's pretty good but not something I usually seek out. Definitely higher than a 3
Love it. Wish I could find new bands with a similar sound.
Surprised by the number of songs I knew. Would relisten.
i quite liked it! knew a lot more songs on it then I thought i would
Heard it before. I enjoyed it.
You wouldn't think that just a duo would work but the White Stripes put any doubts to rest. Garage band music, raw and spare at its finest.
Just quality work here, guitar is sounding great and some cool songs on display.
Hell yeah, nice to get another from the White Stripes on here, it's been so long since we got Elephant that I almost forgot we had it. Not my favorite album from them, there are at least 2-3 ahead of it (including Elephant and Get Behind Me Satan, which is also on the list somewhere), but it's still really great. Some serious bangers, and among them is "We're Going to Be Friends." I can never get over the fact that that song is from the White Stripes, not just because it's so much more restrained than their usual fare but because it's such a pleasant and well-written classic that I would've just assumed it was written many decades ago. Featured prominently, of course, in one of my favorite movies ever, Napoleon Dynamite. Such a fantastic song. Aside from that, still a number of killer tracks on here, more aligned with the heavier sound that they do so well. Great album. Favorite tracks: We're Going to Be Friends, Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, Finding it Harder to Be a Gentleman, Fell in Love with a Girl, I Can't Wait, The Protector. Album art: Black and white and red all over, best color scheme. Looks like the Whites are getting mobbed by shadow papparazzi. Not entirely sure what to make of it, but it's striking. 4/5
I like The White Stripes, they're cool, and I enjoy quite a bit of what Jack White has been doing since, whenever his music came my way, but I didn't need an album of this today. It was ~alright.
Lots of great tracks here!!
Great guitar. Not really a morning album. Fits my indie-rock phase from a few years ago. Definitely not mad at this. 7/10
Well now, I was not a fan and did not care to listen to entire album. I do like a number of familiar good songs. But, after listening to this I have to re-visit. I like the quick burst of catchy songs, but sadly hit a couple snags at the end. .
Classic White Stripes. A lot of these made it to my "megamix". Dig in. This is a good one.
Thoughts before listening: This was the first White Stripes album I ever heard, and its a great one. I love the band, and this is their second best album behind Elephant. Review: Yeah this is great. This is an album I would have discovered in college, and I have distinct memories of hearing songs like "Hotel Yorba" for the first time. This really drew me in at the time because it has the attitude of the punk rock I had been listening to for years but mixed with blues and country elements which I had been discovering at the time. As an album this is a tier down from Elephant, but some of the songs on here are at least on par with that album. "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground", "Fell in Love With a Girl", "The Union Forever", "We're Going to Be Friends", and "I Think I Smell a Rat" are my favorites. All in all this is a great album that I have a lot of history with. 4-stars for being a lesser album than Elephant and for some weak tracks.
Another great album from the White Stripes, full of the raw energy that we've come to expect from Jack and Meg. The opening track, "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" is unmistakenly pure White Stripes blues-rock. When I heard "Expecting", I thought I was listening to Black Sabbath.
Strong album, especially the first half, around the middle it starts to drop off for me.
I have listened to this album once before, but I don't think I was paying very close attention. I have never been particularly into The White Stripes, and I'm still not, but I enjoyed this album a lot. Faves: The Same Boy You've Always Known, We Are Going to Be Friends, Fell in Love With a Girl, I Can't Wait
Amazing for only guitar and drums. Best 2 piece band ever?
Not their best album, but also one I'd surprisingly not heard before. I'll give it a 4 based on historical impact.
Probably my favorite White Stripes album, “The Union Forever” stands out as sonically the darkest song on the album
Love me some Jack White. Never heard most of these songs and really liked most of them. Fell in Love with a Girl and We are Gonna Be Friends are all timers.....not enough on this album to make it 5 stars tho.
Yeah, good jams
Raw rock and roll - pure Back-handed compliments - sting Neckbreaking beats - rock
This album is kind of a mixed bag. Some tracks are so dorky that they're fun. Others are Jack White trying so hard to be cool that he's dorky. Lots of fun riffs and powerfully simple percussion on this album. Fell In Love With a Girl is still incredible, it's too bad the rest of this album doesn't reach those heights. 3.75/5
I’ll always prefer elephant over this one, but it’s amazing how mature Jack White’s sound is even so early in his career. Single handedly revived the blues and carried the classic-rock-n-roll torch into the 21st century.
