Reviews (page 14 of 14)
23/05/2026 This is just the typical mumble rap that seems to be stupidly popular today. Give me some AI and let me write some mumble lyrics and watch me be just as successful. It's crazy all the things we can apparently get away with promoting, the racism, misogyny, gun crime, murder. Why is this guy and genre so popular and successful?! Spotify listeners: 72 million
Lazy lyrics, awful. No redeeming qualities whatsoever.
No he conectado con ninguna. 3.48/10
This album was a masterclass in how tastes differ... the critical acclaim for this is off the charts, on RYM this is rated higher than all of the unbelievable legendary masterpieces by The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, ... So I really really tried to get into it, although it felt wrong from the beginning. At the end I can say, I do acknowledge the great production, but that's where my appreciation ends. Nope, it's not for me. 1/5 very weak
Tried but couldn’t make it through the album.
I could start with “ hip hops not my thing but I respect the artist” but no not this time. It’s just a fucking shit album, absolute dog shit. Why do these people keep trying to re write Straight outta Compton?
such a mess omg
Too vulgar
It has its audience but that doesn’t include me. Horrible! 1
I got this album on my birthday and the best gift I could give myself is to choose something else to listen to today. (I swapped this out for House of Music by Tony! Toni! Toné!)
Absolutely shit from start to finish, if only no stars was a possibility. Terrible music, worse lyrics, not a single redeeming feature. My life has been made worse by listening to this crap.
I just don't get it.
I find this type of rap boring and unimaginative, bitch this and mutherf*#ker that. It's time to grow up.
Pro’s - it’s a while since I had an American c(rap) album on here. Con’s - still hate it Or should that be the other way round? 1/5 23/3/26
I've heard that Lamar's stuff is legendary, important, poetic, etc. But as an old white man in rural America, it just doesn't resonate with me. I'd rather read a book about the plight of black Americans than listen to this. I hope it reaches its intended audience, and judging from its popularity, it does.
Not my thing, I'm too old!!
Absolutely not my style. Was difficult to listen to.
Sounds weird but also kinda cool, but this it not for me
Hated it. I’ve never heard so many uses of the word “nigga”, “pussy”, “dick”… you get the idea.
Not my cup of tea. There were very few things I actually enjoyed.
Can’t stand newer Kendrick
This album has too much language and corse lyrics for me.
These days, I really dont for this type of language in the music I listen to. Lemar, you are clearly very talented, but this will never for for me
I guess I am out of touch...
Whatever it is... it isn't for me.
Shit
It’s just bad.
if my book was 10001 albums this still would not be in it. nothing that I haven't heard before. nothing original that stands out. lucky to get 1*
I just don’t think I’ll ever like this genre
Made it through two minutes before I couldn't take any more. . .
lord no
Not interested in hip hop. Awful genre. Don't even know why this is on here. Not wasting my time on this. Rating it a 1 just to hate. #NotRealMusic
Again and again and again....... really enjoyed the music. Its the lyrics I have issues with. Not good.
Crap
Too much

Not for me
This right here is why people homeschool!
I can't listen to this when the lyrics are so crude and vile. The over the top vulgarity has zero appeal.
DNF. This was a drag just to get through a minute of each song before I allowed myself to skip. I think I just don't like hip hop.
Muck
I skipped almost every song on this record due to his use of the "n" word. Be better Lamar!
noisy
First time listening, sorry I didn’t find anything impressive. I don’t like hip hop/rap but I really appreciate MBDTF, this one no, he seemed to have too much ego to express and I would not like to accept that.
I'm sure this album is important to many people. I'm not one of them. If I could make out the words rapped I think I might enjoy trying to decipher all the embedded codes, references, and in jokes contained within them. All I came away with from my one listen was a reference to The A-Team's Mr. T: I pity the poor fool! My experience was akin to sitting in a movie theater watching a movie with a mostly innocuous soundtrack while a neighboring movie patron refuses to shut up throughout the entire film. One listen was plenty for me.
Crap
I couldn't care less about it. I understand the intention of the album, the interest on making some of its songs, but I just don't like this kind of music. So, I value the artistic intention of this album, but it's not done in a way I can value or like. I would give it two stars because of the jazz incursions and some experimentation but... am I really liking the way it's done? Not because you have something in mind or you want to do something deep means you end up doing it. I'm not saying it isn't any of those things, but, for me, a person who doesn't like hip-hop at all, this album is just as the rest. It may have something I like a little but, overall, it's an album of a kind of music I don't like. And it really is not interesting for me, anyway. Do it the right way and, then, talk to me. But not with this album.
Is this good? Not in my eyes, but maybe I am just ignorant regarding Rap and Hip Hop.
I didn't like this at all
I began listening to listen and stopped by the third track. 1/5
I don’t get it. Shrug.
sounds like shit to me :)
One of the highest regarded albums that I just don’t like
It's hard to listen to an album about Black artists negotiating co-optation within rich white power structures without thinking about how Lamar has since enthusiastically allowed himself to be co-opted.
Not my kind but ok
Bit of a struggle
Some powerful songs and lyrics especially the last song. However it's not an album that stuck with me.
Hoo boy. Already? It’s only been a month or so since I re-listened to Good Kid, m.A.A.d City through this list, and now I guess it’s time for ol’ TPAB to get a reappraisal – an album I have long considered to be the worst ever made. Guess there’s nothing left for me to do but hit play It’s just so fucking long, dude. Do I really need to listen to this? Alright, here goes. Yeah, it’s still shit. Admittedly better than what I recall this being, but it still sucks mondo dick. Devoid of any meaning, torturously long, shit vocals with an ending that completely trivialises whatever merit the preceding tracks had. Is this truly the worst album ever made? Probably not, but you could torture me with this thing regardless. “King Kunta” has an alright flow, even if the lyrics make my eyes roll into the back of my skull. I don’t like the instrumental overall – there's way too much going on, but it has some good components. The guitar outro isn’t bad. “u” isn’t half bad. Kendrick's vocals toe the line between being unique an immensely annoying, yet I can acknowledge the merit. I love me a good “in shambles” tune. The song is stretched out to oblivion like all of the-okay, okay. I’m trying to be optimistic. Yeah, I can’t be optimistic. The middle of this album through to the end is just nothing. ~5 minute song after ~5 minute song, paired with completely vapid songwriting and droll, painfully boring instrumentals. On m.A.A.d City I could at least feel the passion of Kendrick, with there being some adept songwriting and competent instrumentals. With this album, I can’t help but feel like he’s phoned it in. There isn’t even a coherent theme/story to this album, at least from what I've picked up along the way. I don’t have the edition of the book which includes this album, but even if I did, I wouldn’t think of consulting it. Cultural phenomenon, left an indelible mark on hip-hop, yadda yadda. This is a worthwhile inclusion.
Yet another Hip-Hop / Rap album. Wikipedia says the genre is Experimental Hip-Hop / Progressive Rap / Conscious Hip-Hop / Jazz Rap / G-Funk / Neo Soul which seems to be a long way of saying pretentious C-Rap.
i dont really like rap so this albums are just not for me, i cannot rate them because i dont like any of the rap songs
Great, more hip-hop (c)rap. I really need more of that in my life.
I just cant stand Kendrick. Don't get me wrong, I love Hip Hop but this is just a messy mix of... nothingness. I really really don't get the appeal, and I have tried. Its pop hip hop.
One of the blandest things I have ever heard.
Did not like this at all
Nope
I've never been a Kendrick fan. I just don't like his approach and style much. I appreciate the talent and the approach but I prefer other rap and hip-hop
This is no Hip Hop, this is noise...
Modern hip hop is shite.
Great rhythms & clearly very clever, but only managed 2/3 of it before I gave up; this style of music just doesn't do it for me I'm afraid. And not that I'm sensitive in any way, but just how many songs do you need to write with the words m*therf*cker & n*gger in it?!
Jesus that's bad
Absolute rubbish
That was terrible.
Fuck off.
I can’t believe anyone would listen to this twice
Like the jazziness and some of the beats. Hate the language/content. Degenerate. Way too long. Exhausting. I can see why people might like it, but I don't. Makes me sad that this is what so many people resonate with.
NOPE.
Why can't I give 0?
This is #day337 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… as I might have said a couple of times before in the hip-hop entries on this list, post-2005 rap (after my teenage years) is just out of my, what I like to call, sentimental memory. It doesn't move me. I don't relate to it. It all sounds plastic to me. As for this artist... despite this being my second record of his, I still don't get the hype. No matter what people say about him being a storytelling genius or whatever, I just don't care. Because it doesn't work for me. There were one or two moments across the five or six tracks, which I was able to withstand, that caught my attention (some of that jazz rap interplay), but otherwise, no, there's no way I'm putting this on again. The delivery and flow are particularly annoying. Welcome to the club of 1 out of 5, I guess. Looking forward to #day338.
Nicht mein Stil
Can’t find any redeeming features.
Not for me.
To Pimp a Butterfly is an impressively produced and engineered album, showcasing a rich tapestry of sounds, beats, and musical experimentation. The instrumentation is layered and creative, blending elements of jazz, funk, and soul in a way that clearly demonstrates artistic ambition and technical skill. However, I personally struggled to connect with the lyrics and the narrative themes explored throughout the album. The stories and messages, while clearly meaningful to many, didn’t resonate with me—perhaps hip-hop simply isn’t a genre that clicks for me. Despite giving it a full 24 hours, I found the listening experience quite difficult, and ultimately, I didn’t enjoy the album as a whole. Favourite track: Wesley’s Theory was a strong opener, and For Free? stood out for its energy and originality. Least favourite: Most of the remaining tracks didn’t land with me. Album artwork: A fairly standard hip-hop cover—bold and in-your-face, fitting for the genre but not particularly distinctive to my eye.
Dear Kendrick, Why have you collaborated with so many producers and musicians on every track? Were you chasing some kind of world record? What bits did you actually do? Were you also chasing a world record on how many times you can say naughty words on one album? I reckon you’ve won that one at least. All seems so provocative. Well you’ve provoked me into dishing out one lovely shiny gold star for your troubles.
This is scattergun rubbish. Too many ideas, such as a sort of freeform jazz number with a crap rap, then there would be some sort of rap ballad. The only song of note was called Mr Kunty or some attention grabbing nonsense like that. Very disappointing for Kendrick, I expected better from one of the superstars of this genre.
I've been repulsed by every single Kendrick Lamar song I've ever had the misfortune of hearing, and this is no exception.
ik probeer het, echt waar, geloof me... maar het lukt me niet...
Bless my ears, this was 𝗡𝗢𝗧 the "Greatest of All Time." It was so abysmally bad that comparing it to "Abbey Road" made me audibly wheeze. Although "To Pimp A Butterfly" is meant to be social commentary, I was unable to decipher the commentary. The album offends me in more than one way: 1. Most of the verses are incredibly misogynist ("At first, I did love you / But now I just wanna fuck") and degrade women to objects, which is a common occurrence in rap music. So much for being 'progressive.' 😛 2. The n-word is also thrown around like fireworks, which would be excusable if it was used for social commentary, but it's so randomly sandwiched b/w verses that it's hard to argue that it's here for commentary value. Kendrick even invited Dr. Dre, who composed the famous misogynist anthem "Bitches Ain't Shit" in 1992, to contribute to the album. To be frank, the sampled works were the best part of the album. All in all, "To Pimp A Butterfly" was vulgar, obnoxious, and barbaric with no redeeming qualities. It is an album that only white teenagers and self-proclaimed music elites claim to enjoy.
Too produce not an album I would put in my top 1000
no
not a fan
Meh.
In my opinion, this just sucks. Repetitive and juvenile. It's like he got the lyrics off of a jr high student's peechee. Yes, I know I'm dating myself. Like eating overcooked vegetables as a kid, I wanted to get up and leave the table. But I stuck it out.

Previously rated: good kid, m.A.A.d city (2/5) ******************************* Deep Thoughts by Kendrick Lamar. Mind-numbing, intelligence insulting, racist garbage by some mile-a-minute rapper who fashions himself some enlightened prophet of his generation, almost on Kanye West's level. Even if I liked the music, I couldn't sing/rap along because of the multitude of n-words in this thing. And the album cover reinforces a bunch of negative stereotypes. I think I was too generous to his first album. Lemme axe you dis, do I have to listen to another one of this moron's albums? Please, no. Oh, also, his Super Bowl halftime show sucked.
ja, album gehört - nein, für mich kein highlight.
Bien, das ist nicht mein Rap. Zuviel jazzige und andere Elemente.
Truly one of the worst things I've ever listened to. I tried to scroll through the tracks and see if I could find something on there but the dissonance of some of the music and the way it was produced was really not my thing. That mixed in with the offensive wanna-be-cool-by-using-crass-language trash lyrics that seems to be most rap music makes it just plain bad. When good kid, m.A.A.d city was on the list I rated it 3, and said "Interesting listen. I very much went into it expecting to hate it." and I was really hoping I would go into this with it being an interesting listen, but unfortunately it was just crass and horrible. I hope there's no more Kendrik Lamar albums on this list for a while as I might start skipping them entirely. Would rate it 0 if I could
Not for me. I appreciate the artistry, but, no thanks.
Awful racist n word all time
no thanks
awful
Another hip hop album. As so often, I gave it a quick listen. Nothing that interested me. And so I finished it quickly. 1/5

An album so bad it proves his fans are morons
Rap con lievi influenze soul.
Nah, bit yawn and a bit off tempo for me.

Tosh. And I consider myself a fan of hiphop
Not my cup of tea, but I’m sure it’ll appeal to someone out there
I tried this album years ago when it came out. I didn't like it then, I don't like it now. It teeters between a 2 and a 1 for me cause its creative and the skits are cool and all but there are just some parts that make me feel like someone is rubbing my hair in the wrong direction. Wish I could tell you why...
Couldn't get through it. And that makes me feel old and out of touch...
I think this is about the 15th KL album that has appeared as a recommendation to me on here and to be honest it's the first one I listened to because... ANOTHER RAP INDUSTRY RAP ALBUM PRODUCT But I opened my mind up and prepared to be delighted by the lack of cliche and ground breaking originality that this vital modern artist would provide... Wasted my time again didn't I? Swearing, N-Words, boasting, P-Funk rip offs. Man where is the innovation in Hip-Hop? Again, this is wasted on me, just like hair-metal and country there's a market for it and I am not the market. I'm going to listen to The Isleys now until I feel better. Fuck.
non lo capisco nonostante gli sforzi. sorry
shit
No my style, plus too much profanity and mysoginy.
No thanks ! 1*
Day148 - could be a good instrumental album
All explicit
Not for me
Didn't enjoy at all.
No thank you
Many tracks started with interesting groves, but then they changed. I had to speed run through this album starting with track 2—basically I couldn't stand and of it. This album wasn't for me.
¿Pero qué broma es ésta? Muy malo.
Fucking hell. Some of this sounds like it’s been written with irritating me specifically in mind. I’m sure this is ‘great’ but I tried every track and I just absolutely hate it. Best of luck to Kendrick.
This is not for me.
Awesome thanks
So this is just not for me. It's not that it's bad, but rap is just a genre I can't connect with.
not a fan
the vocals and lyrics are not it i dont like hip hop i couldnt even listen to the whole album (surprised i even got through 6 songs) shite it would be a good album without the vocals
Just not my type of music on any level
Not a fan. I enjoyed the background instruments that's about it
I wanted to love it. Instead o found it frustrating and disjointed. It’s not for me
Gave it a few songs, conclusion - boring
It’s just not very good, not really a single banger on the whole album and it’s 1 hours 20 min long.
Oh no
horrible
This is horrible
Terrible
Awful garbage
It's like a challenging abstract painting in which the noise is in the eye of the beholder. For me, it's ugly, repellant music. Putting it in the context of the lives and tastes of another demographic, it could be meaningful. My rating is for me, though. The cover looks like January 6th.
Hyvä tuotanto, mut eih, ihan paskaa 1.5/5
There's not a single rap album on this planet that needs to be 80 minutes long. I didn't like anything about this one.
Some of the music is ok; kind of funky or jazzy. The lyrics are another story. I think I heard the n word times in this album than I have my whole life! Also, he sounds like Tommy Davidson when he is acting like a little kid.
Really?
Not my style, and just didn’t enjoy it. But I gave it a try.
Nö! Keine Chance bei mir. Das ist definitiv keine Musik!
Very artistically, well written but too much for me- didn't enjoy it as much as I would have liked.
Not for me.
Next.
Disgusting!!
I do not like music that has disrespectful language
who knew so much rhymed w Muthafuckers, Ho's, Bitches, Niggahs...
Ruined my Spotify algorithm Horrible
After a few good intros that leave you wanting more - the wish is unfortunately never fulfilled - boring beats and the same staccato chanting follow. Vocally nothing special either.
Not for me. Definitely not my normal genre choice and I'm not a fan of explicit language - but - I did find the music and lyrics more interesting after taking the extra time to read about each tune and what it meant to the artist.
Nicht mein Geschmack
Not for me
Was this 2015? Was this #19 Greatest of all time according to a rock magazine? It's not bad and I like parts of it but it's not innovative or original or groundbreaking at all. Anyone who thinks that hasn't listened to much music. Sad we are consumed by the 'New' without reference to what's already been. I hear Prince, a bit of Eminem and even Trip-Hop vibes. Like I say, I like it but it's derivative.
Oh Please. Really?
I've heard a lot about Kendrick but I'm not really a fan of rap. First song is super lame, I really really thought this would be different, but it's just about wanting to fuck. Second song he raps about his dick?
Not my kind of music I did like one of the songs though. But I will never listen again.
Not a fan, at all.
scuffed LOL
It's all so nauseating
I don’t like explicit stuff.
I tried but couldn't get through the album. Might be a great rap album but that doesn't mean much to me.
There’s a stack of potential on this but most of it is ruined by his potty mouthed ramblings
Not sure how this made it onto the list…
Meh
Terrible
Kudt, verschrikkelijk
This is not my taste, too much for me, I made it through 2 songs ... one star
Not for me
Awful in every way. It was almost torture to listen all the way through
Got a few tracks in before tapping out, not for me!
Rap. Nichts für mich.
Not a rap fan, but this album did have some more interesting background music
Nää. 1 Stern.
Borde tillhöra listan "1001 album som ger dig nervsammanbrott".
Awful
Not my music: a lot of swearing 🤬!!!!
heard before still not for me
Absolutely not my style
Urgh; can only hope it's deliberately as disjointed as possible as otherwise this would be a worthless waste of space only designed to apply to those who think it's edgy. No musical value or interesting lyrics to be seen here, just mumbling nonsense. Hate to be all modern hip-hop is trash, but by god this is trash. 1 if not lower
nope
Bad
Okay, I really tried, but this is not my type of music at all. This album is full of political and social commentary, but I couldn't concentrate on the lyrics at all. This record has one song, that somehow strayed away from the overall style of the album and fell much closer to a type of music I like. "The Blacker the Berry" is a great song, and the more straightforward style of beat and rap made it much more digestible for me. But otherwise, I couldn't find anything worth praising. Probably a great album, but maybe it went far above my head.
Thought I would like it but it did nothing for me. Remove the "N" word from the album and most songs will become an instrumental.
I keep trying, but I just don’t get it. It feels like lesser The Roots, and the blend of spirituality and misogyny are too much.
uhhh... what the fuck was this? I don't understand how this is so highly rated or how his music is so popular? Feels like Mr K L is not sure what he's trying to create here. The only song I slightly like was King Kunta
¿Pero qué broma es ésta? Muy malo. 1
Not a fan at all
F.ck this sh.t
Zero stars. Total crap. Has no respect for himself or his race. Too many 'nigga's.
An awful album because of the N word usage.
Vulgar, tuneless, atonal. Unlistenable.
Don’t get this genre, sorry
One good song (King Kunta). Don't like the rest. Says nigga ALL the time.
Nope, not my vibe.
pff,
Kan ik niks mee...
Poop
I promise the rating does not come from any pre-existing bias.
Hate it. Hate literally everything about it. I'm a bit biased though.
Not interesting, explicit, meaningless for me
I'd prefer Hedley Lamar.
Unbearable. No one cares if the dick is free or not.
Really struggled to get past the first 30 seconds of each song. This is not an album for me!
8 out of 10

You Ain’t Gotta Lie is my favorite song off this album I think! - Lauren
Oh hey - Dre's called in
I admit that a lot of the nuance of this album is lost on me. This probably wasn't a good first album on the list. But it sounds great, the production is varied and exemplary, and the lyrics (that I got) were fantastic
