Didn't care for first two songs but everything after was good and it was cool to see how influential this album has been. Recognized a lot of songs from samples being used elsewhere
I don't think I need to explain much here about this album. It's an absolute influential masterpiece in world music history and Stevie Wonder's Magnum Opus, Even though it's already his 18th(!) album, this has him playing, singing and writing at the peak of his creativity. Before it all crumbles apart and we go into the 80's. Absolutely packed with masterpieces like Sir Duke, I Wish, Pastime Paradise and If It's Magic.
Stevie is such a freak - fantastic.
One of the most ambitious and heartfelt artistic statements ever recorded. It covers so much emotional ground it's staggering. After 17 studio albums, this is Stevie's creative supernova before he became a neutron star.
This is hard because it's clearly very good but a lot of it I'm just not into. I love the idea of some of these songs positivity and love, but in practice I never wanna hear songs about that, lmao. Definite 5 for legacy/talent, 3 for enjoyment. 4 It is.
Everything about this album. The instrumentation, the emotion, the singing, everything. This album is perfect. I can see myself listening to this album in every situation in my life, on a walk, working, etc. I think this is a TEXTBOOK 10/10 album. I think this is the best album we've had so far in this, right beside Ágætis Byrjun. EASY 10/10

Ubicaba cosas sueltas de Stevie Wonder, pero no tenía ni las más remota idea de lo prolífico y exitoso que fue. Este disco es una muestra de ello. Un disco con 21 rolas y más de 100 minutos de buena música, muy variada y muy bien hecha. Obviamente destacan las muy conocidas: Sir Duke y Isn’t She Lovely, pero también hay otras joyas como Black Man y Ebony Eyes. Sorpresa extra con Pastime Paradise y aprender que existe un muy famoso cover.
What an outstanding album. I’d never listened to it the whole way though and it’s beautiful, uplifting, wonderful.
I almost convinced myself this isn't a 5/5 because it's too long but nah, fuck that. This is 104 minutes of straight up good vibes. That might be an intimidating length, but once you get into the zone, it'll be the shortest 104 minutes of your life. Stevie's the man.

I like Stevie Wonder - but never listened to this album in total. While some parts are a bit slick, and others a bit dated, overall it is pretty fantastic. There's also a lot to take in - I'll be coming back to this

Would be a great set of two albums As it stands it was a mess of back-and-forth mismatched music.
Long ass album. Double sided and nearly two hours. Kind of excessive for me personally. Production is immaculate. Legitimately sounds better then 90% of modern releases. I actually did a double check to see if it was a modern remix. Incredibly tight. Pastime Paradise caught me off guard lol. I knew Gangstas Paradise was a sample but I didn't realize the whole melody was lifted as well. Shameless. Honestly, the album sounds great but it's just not something I'm drawn to. It was kind of a drag for me to get through due to it's length. It's just not for me. All most too tight and perfect sounding for me as weird as that sounds. "Another Star" has an absolute banger rhythm section though.

Listened Before? N This was pretty good. I didn't even know some of these songs were by Stevie Wonder. I see why this is a classic. The only drawback I found was that one of those songs I didn't know was by SW is "Sir Duke". There's just something about this song that I can't stand. It's so repetitive. Starts out strong. Some great songs though a bit preachy at times.. Then the album continues and keeps on. Lots of filler though no really bad songs. Probably just an hour longer than it should have been.

I'm not generally a fan of double albums because they start to feel tedious and I don't always have 2 hours of uninterrupted listening time to fully appreciate them. But goddamn, Stevie provides ample variety tonally, musically, sonically, and lyrically throughout that the hour and forty-five minute runtime never gets stale. I think almost every single song on this album has been sampled, imitated, or borrowed from in some way, it's just such a massive supernova of influence! Conceptually, you think "life" is a very broad topic, but damn if Stevie doesn't find a way to hit on every universally relatable facet of it in these songs. Everything about this album works, it is an immaculate listening experience and an absolute tour de force from one of the all-time greatest musicians to ever live.
Bad double albums are an absolute chore to sit through. Good double albums usually comprise an amazing single album and then a load of filler. Great double albums? That’s an art form. That Stevie Wonder achieved that here as part of a run of absolute classics, and THEN stuck another stellar EP on top, is testament to his genius. Beyond the obvious hits we don’t even need to discuss in “Sir Duke” and “Isn’t She Lovely”, there’s a rich goldmine of material which many casual Stevie Wonder fans (let’s face it: who ISN’T one?) might never hear. Right from the off we hit the ground in soulful, expansive territory. “Love’s In Need of Love Today” is a fairly low key opener that didn’t do a lot for me at first, but the more I hear it the more I find to love about it. A timeless message, gorgeous harmonies and an endless chorus, it’s a thinking person’s “Hey Jude”. And that’s just track 1 of 21. “Village Ghetto Land” elevates the humble synthesiser to an orchestra. “Contusion” sees Wonder going all-out jazz fusion… and nailing it (I would die for those “doo-doo” backing vocals). “I Wish” is one of the bounciest, most irresistibly funky Stevie Wonder songs I know. “Knocks Me Off My Feet” and “Summer Soft” see his voice in its finest form, navigating key change after key change with stunning control and passion. “Ordinary Pain”‘s gear shift from electric piano ballad to hard-edged funk (with guest vocals from Shirley Brewer) is a brilliant moment and a thrilling way to close the first half. So far, so perfect: released on its own, it would have been an easy five stars. But Wonder gleefully goes further, stretching even the double album beyond its limit. In all honesty, the beginning of the second disc is where “Songs…” is most at risk of collapsing into excess. “Joy Inside My Tears” and “Black Man” are great at first but don’t need to be the length they are. (As a side note, it’s a slight niggle that he wrote an eight and a half minute song about equality between humankind and mostly forgot about women). Even the treasured “Isn’t She Lovely” suffers a bit from its length, with an extended outro in the album cut. “If It’s Magic”, though, brings us refreshingly back to earth with a gorgeously restrained harp-and-vocals only song. “As” and “Another Star” are the two epics (both glorious) taking us into the home stretch. In the past I’ve been fatigued at this point and often haven’t bothered with the EP, treating it as a bonus. But listening recently has made me realise what an incredible bonus it is! If anything is enough to tip this album into five star territory, it’s the fact Stevie Wonder could put the buoyant singalong “Ebony Eyes” and the stomping funk of “All Day Sucker” on a bonus EP, not even fitting them onto the main four sides of his eighteenth album. What a god damn man.
This album is pretty close to being perfect, and is a strong contender for best double album ever. It radiates beauty in a way you wish all music could do. Even in its most serious moments, Songs in the Key of Life has a brightness and a warmth that is incredibly engaging. The album showcases Stevie Wonder's unique musical gifts and musical point of view with such depth, but always with an ear toward what is entertaining. The songs are gorgeously crafted, joyful, confident, heartfelt, soulful and affirming. And oh yeah, the album is simply great fun. I absolutely love it. Sir Duke has such a perfect groove, and that lead horn is divine. This is a great album. There's a bit of cheese leftover but glad I gave this another listen.

Was hoping to enjoy this more. Instrumentals are great, but couldn’t get into the style.
I'd say this guy deserves the label "musical genius." I don't always love his softer, sappier music, but when he gets a little funky watch out. This is a great album. Also, little known fact, but the song "Isn't She Lovely" wasn't meant as a rhetorical question. He was asking whether she was really lovely, because he literally had no idea. 4 stars.
Stevie Wonder is great. This album is good and has plenty of hits. Since it is two discs, it is over an hour and 40 minutes. There are some songs that are little long and others that are just kinda meh. Disc 1 is better than Disc 2 and almost all of the hits are located on Disc 1. Disc 2 has some good songs and a couple that were recognizable. You can definitely hear how his music has influenced other artists. I don't think I would listen to both discs again back to back, but listening to disc 1 only is more likely.

Stevie's one of the great
I don't really know why but I usually find Stevie Wonder's albums to be long, even when they are not, so when I found myself in front of his double (and highly praised) album I felt a bit overwhelmed before even embarking on the journey. But what a journey this was! Yes, it's long, but it's thoroughly consistent and varied at the same time. Village Ghetto Land with its string arrangement is a nice change in pace. As Confusion came up, I had to check my player, as I thought it had switched me to a 70s prog band. I already knew Pastime Paradise as it was sampled somewhere. Ordinary Pain is plain funk with female vocals and it also comes out of nowhere as if it were played from another artist, another album. I also knew Isn't She Lovely, probably a radio staple? He's kind of cute singing in Spanish, but please don't let him do that again! No Spanish to be reported on As but pretty much Latin rhythm with gospel-like choruses, while Another Star has an eye on Rio. Final verdict, an absolute classic, in spite of its length. It feels at times like a various artists compilation. Very few songs feel like filler and it was less tiring than expected.

I didn't like this album very much. It was music, that's alright. But I just didn't feel anything while I was listening to it. Maybe perhaps with I Wish, but the other songs really just sound flat. To me, that is.
Amazing
Amazing album. Loved it growing up, and it’s still just as great today as it was upon first listen.
My second Stevie Wonder album in this exercise and what is considered his masterpiece. I'd have to agree: what an achievement! This is a big, double album; it is a sprawling in the best sense covering a lot of ground, musically and lyrically. Just look at Side A: "Love's in Need of Love Today" - a very soft, soulful song with Stevie longing for more love in the world, "Have a Talk with God" - complex keyboards and noises and more spiritual by having a talk with God about problems, "Village Ghetto Lord" - more serious song about the crime, poverty, starvation with a majestic symphonic background, "Contusion" - mostly instrumental and a 70's jazzy-guitar and prog-rock feel and finally, "Sir Duke"- a joyous homage to Duke Ellington and one of my all-time favorite songs. And now, we still have three more sides of music. The rest of the album does not slow down in variety, originality and excellence. So many highlights: the grooves of "I Wish" and "Isn't She Lovely", the soul of "As" and the majesty and uplifting of "Another Star." Some may crtique the excess with the album and some song lengths. A number of songs do clock in at the six to eight-minute length. It did not bother me too much. This album is rightfully considered one of the best albums of all time and also included into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for its culturally, historically and aesthetically significance.

Wonderful album and probably Stevie wonders most complete. Between the Melodies and great songwriting this album is an R&B classic. Almost half of the album is full of classic songs. This is a must listen and relisten all the time. 8.9/10
I couldn't finish it but i can recognize the quality and genius of Stevie. A lot of familiar sounds and themes. I have to say I prefer the Gangsta's version of paridise, don't shoot me, I'm just millennial

Absolutely loved this album. It's so funky. Stevie Wonder is obviously a legend but I had never sat down and listened to an album of his all the way through, and I'm really glad that I did. There are some obvious favorites like Sir Duke and Isn't she lovely, but some of the lesser known songs on the album like I Wish, Ordinary Pain, Another Star, and All Day Sucker are real gems as well.

I have this on vinyl. Was considered a must-own. Listened to bits here and there, didn't catch on. Reviews here again raved. 5s across the board. I must be missing something. So...I was, somewhat. My first listen start to finish unearthed a lot of well-known songs and sampled-songs. But it's very, very long. And many songs feel much longer than they need to be. I will be generous with a 4.
Nice but a bit lengthy
5. It's a 5. The album is a 5. Everybody knows it's a 5 even if they're too afraid to give it a 5. I've listened to this album before and I remember when I first saw it in my parent's album collection. I thought it would be okay, I mean it's Stevie Wonder after all, but I never expected (before I listened to it) that it would be so impactful, creative, and masterful. It was album of the year, it's his bestselling album, and it's a 5. 'Love's In Need Of Love Today' as an appetizer, moving into 'Have a Talk With God,' just, how can you listen to those two opening songs and not fall in love with this album. And then it hits you over the head with 'I Wish' and 'Pastime Paradise.' And that's just the first half. Incredible. 5/5. It's just a 5. Get over it.
FIVE STARS An all-time classic As is usually the case with those five-stars albums, I won't write a full-blown review about this particular record, because others have already written wonderful stuff about it and there's not much I can add that I feel could be relevant and interesting. It's just a gem. Go and listen to it a.s.a.p. One of the best albums, period
I have loved this album for years. Between talking Book and this album I don't think Stevie could have really done anything poorly in the 70s.
4.6 - what an epic opus of an album. It’s hard to put out nearly two hours of music without filler, but Wonder did it here. Was filled with songs I know themselves, songs I knew through later samples and songs I was unfamiliar with, but utterly amazed by. “Black Man” was my favorite new discovery off the album. Will be coming back.

This was a truly enjoyable listen, if a bit overly long. I was already a fan of Stevie Wonder's radio hits, but I found I liked some of the deeper cuts even more. "Contusion" was a standout for me, a cool instrumental interlude that reminded me of some of Frank Zappa's instrumental numbers. 4/5 stars, would have been higher if they had cut a few songs.
Upbeat, positive messages. Fun
This came as a breath of fresh air to me. It’s such a peaceful record that treats very important themes. I love everything about this piece of art. The music, the vocals, the lyrics. Everything is in perfect harmony with each other. I was pleasantly surprised and I am glad I came across this record.
This album is one of my all time favourites. Great and catchy songs from start to finish. I think I have a slight preference for Volume 2, especially because some of the tracks on Volume 1 are just slightly too long sometimes. Nevertheless, both are great.
So many hits on this (admittedly long, though never boring) album. Consistently excellent. The only songs I might skip on occasion are Village Ghetto Land and Ngiculela, but that's probably just because I suck rather than the songs, ya know? I also hate the baby crying on Isn't She Lovely. Yes, I know the story behind it and yes, I still hate it. Other than that, though, it's *chef's kiss*.
This was an impressive effort. I really think it is one that would have been improved by making it shorter but even the songs I didn't like as much were still 3+ or 4+ songs. I'd listen to this any place any time. Some of the social commentary was a little too heavy-handed for my taste but usually the groove made up for it. 4.6 stars

Nothing new to say. Genius from front to back. Classic status for a good reason
One of the things I really liked about this album was how every song was different from the previous song. I have only seen that happen once before (Faith No More's King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime). Sir Duke... I played this song when I was in the Marching Ravens, what a great piece, but that brass part is a bear. Pastime Paradise... did not know that that was where Gangsta's Paradise came from. Shows you what I know. Easy Goin' Evenin' - Loved the harmonica on this I was surprised at how much there were a few songs that sounded like things were sampled, but it was 76 so I know that that wasn't the case. Great album, listened to it a few times and that doesn't happen too much for these.
Dang. They don't make 'em like Stevie Wonder anymore do they? I've always been a "radio" fan of his - love his music and profess to be a fan but I don't own any albums and mostly listen to him when he's on the radio. And really that was when I was a kid/teen. I do have a group of friends where we'll put on some Stevie when we get together but really, I think this was the first time I listened to an entire album of his on my own. And what an album! 2 discs, 4 sides, and a bonus side - it almost doesn't even matter what the second disc sounds like after the first one. The legacy of this album is clear in how many of these songs have been sampled. He brings so much variety - soft, subtle arrangements on some songs (Knocks Me off My Feet, Summer Soft, Joy Inside My Tears), funk or upbeat tempos on others (Sir Duke, I Wish, Ordinary Pain), and still something in the middle on others via funky/upbeat tempo but softer content (Have a Talk With God, Isn't She Lovely, As). Some songs that I didn't remember but thought were awesome were Love's In Need of Love Today (beautiful), Contusion (a funk odyssey), Black Man (powerful), If It's Magic (also beautiful). He pours his heart and soul into every minute; while he sometimes reminds us of our shortcomings he also often reminds us of what is good in this world. Could use some more of that these days. A nearly 2hr masterpiece.
Pastime Paradise --> Gangsta's Paradise --> Amish Paradise = evolution, fool. Just kidding. This album is longer than it needs to be but there are lots of great moments. Favorite tracks: Sir Duke and I Wish are a one-two punch of coolness. Ordinary Pain - I dig the "response" section. Isn't She Lovely? is a beautiful song but I could do without the crying baby (even if it's about his first daughter). "As" is one of my favorites on the album - no idea why he didn't just title it "Always." Least Favorite - Saturn - um, yeah, those lyrics are pretty bad. Technically this was on a "bonus" disk, so maybe it doesn't count. I'd call this album a 4.5 and I'll round it to a generous 5, because I've been listening to and enjoying it for days.
A true classic

I think it's safe to say that the 70s belonged to Stevie Wonder. Whereas any and all genres and trends and bands came, dominated, mutated and went, Stevie was that one nucleus that everyone relied on and said that he was worth the time spent listening to. After five albums in six years of sheer, relentless creativity unparalleled and unmatched in R&B/Soul, Songs in the Key of Life more than lives up to its title. There is hardly a bum note throughout the near two hours of audio bliss that is contained here. This album is ecstatic, triumphant, bold, colorful and even educational at points. If musicians listened to this album on the day of its release and realized that it wasn't worth matching up to or surpassing, therefore quitting their industry of choice, they wouldn't be blamed. If I had to give this ten stars, I would. Five doesn't do it justice. Spectacular album.
- I like Stevie Wonder a lot, so that's easy. - I listened to "I Wish" a lot with another arrangement, but I do not remember where. - "Pastime Paradise" is another song that I think has been sampled/remixed a lot. - "Isn't she lovely" is a great classic and it needs no comments. - The second half of the album is weaker and slower.
I found this album very bad. Or, to be more correct, this is as far aeay from my music taste that you can come. I hate how cheesy every song sounds. Why is everything so happy? Why a chores? Ugh, did not enjoy this. I don't like Stevie Wonders voice either. I'd give this album like a 3/10.

Isn't it lovely, made of love? Well, yes it is.
So many styles. So many songs. Such a solid groove and tone. Four classic bangers. Some tracks need shaving.
That's a lot of Wonder.
Wow - this feels like it had a bit of everything; hard funk, psych soul, yacht rock, even something resembling a Zappa instrumental. Unlike other lengthy albums, not one moment felt like a chore. So many chewy, fun musical ideas here. 'I Wish' was my favourite song on this collection, but as someone not particularly familiar with Stevie Wonder, it was a kick to hear the track that Coolio's biggest hit was built around too.
Wow, so this is his "White Album." It's quite a ride and while it for sure felt like an uneven one to my ears, I also found it hard to deny just the sheer impressiveness of the ground covered on all 672 of these tracks. Some bonafide classics and nice surprises (for me, at least) too. I didn't know "Village Ghetto Land" and that's a beautiful tune. I also didn't know about the "Gangsta's Paradise" connection, but that's on me and fairly embarrassing. I don't know that I'd put this on and just listen to it in sequence in one sitting again. But I could sure as shit cull a greatest hits from this record and listen to the hell out of that.

It’s to this album’s credit that it manages to be so entertaining enough as to warrant nearly 2 full hours of airtime. Not every song is a hit (and some tend to stay well past their welcome), but those that are pulse with a genuine, earned passion and joy that’s hard to turn off.
First time to listen to a Stevie Wonder full album. Met my expectation. Smooth and well produced from start to finish. Never knew Gangster Paradise was a rip off of Pastime Paradise.
This was good, but it was also very long. Every song on here was of quality, however, with a runtime of 104 minutes, this album becomes somewhat of a hassle to listen to. My favorite track from this album was "Isn't She Lovely".

I try to like Stevie Wonder due to his obvious talent, but some of his songs are just so syrupy. I prefer the tracks with more funk or social commentary. It's fun to pick out the samples that have been used in other songs like "Gangsta's Paradise" and "Wild Wild West".

Enjoyable for sure. There are some really great songs here. However, the album is a bit bloated with a nearly 2 hour play time. Some songs couldve been trimmed a bit and some just aren't that great period. Overall, I liked this album but in the future I will probably only revisit certain songs or listen to it in chunks due to the length.

Stevie is one of the greatest of all time. I Wish I’d have got this album over the weekend to really do it justice and listen to every song properly - some dark moments in there - families eating dog food to survive. Even the double album with the bonus 7” doesn’t out stay it’s welcome. I’m probably going to listen to this again today.

Ett klockrent album rakt igenom, finns ingen låt av de 21st inkluderade som inte drar sin del i detta toppenalbum. Det skulle verkligen kunna vara ett samlingsalbum a'la 'greatest hits' för ett banbrytande band med massa album under bältet. Men att Stevie bara skiter ut banger efter banger på vad som ser ut att vara hans 17:e album utan den minsta antydan på att ens skrapa på ytan av sin inspiration är beundransvärt. Kvaliteten på albumet matchar låtarna i att vara absolut toppklass. Där ljudet omfamnar huvudet mjukt med bra separation, och där kören och blåset bl.a har häftig dynamisk steriomix som får ljudet att 'pop' på ett sätt som annars lite 'för proffsiga' album kan sakna. Stevie lyckas ta höga volymer utan att slå i taket och kören är fortfarande kristallklara då de sjunger lägre. 'Omfånget' är enormt och allt återges superläckert. Jag tycker Stevie lyckas bemästra både "less is more" OCH "more is more" i detta album. Det kreativa geniet bakom t.ex. "Talk with God" där det verkar vara typ 20 olika ljudspår av diverse synt, slag och analoga(?) effekter, svag backing choir och munspelsslingor som studsar runt, fram och tillbaka, upp och ner i ljudrummet utan att framstå plottrigt eller stökigt utan istället 100% naturligt och självklart? Stevie följer direkt upp detta med "Village Ghetto Land" som vad jag kan höra bara är synt och stråk (?) utan att kännas för avskalad mot kontrast av föregående låten? Samma mästerskap över minimalism kan man hitta i andra melodier på plattan, vilket verkligen förkroppsligar Antoine de Saint-Exupérys citat "Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." (LOL förlåt) vilket vissa smoothbrains inte verkar förstå. Efter den rätt snygga uppvisningen i återhållsamhet så följer Contution, en kort men intensiv proggrocks-runk som tagen direkt ifrån Frank Zappas katalog. SEN kör han "Sir Duke" vilket har dissekerats av folk kunnigare än mig som hyllar den till skyarna över dess kreativa tonsättning. Allt jag vet är att den SLAPS. EFTER DET så kommer de funkigaste slingan sen Superstition; och så fortsätter det ...i 21 låtar!! Alla tallar lite på diverse teman, utförande, genrer men alla är på en sådan nivå att det kan vara det bästa kombination av utförande, produktionskvalitet, känsla, musikalisk talang och geni i sina respektive genrer, för Stevie är det mest ett kul sidospår. Man plockar inte albumets övergripande tema för än man är några varv igenom (och läser titeln..) där alla låtar (med kanske några utantag?) touchar på olika aspekter i ett liv, från fattigdom, rasism, kärlek, romans och övergripande samhällskritik och framtida utsikter. Enbart detta album innehåller flertal låtar som man har visslat på sen man var liten utan att ens veta om vem Stevie Wonder är. Mannen ÄR ett musikalisk geni som andas, dricker, äter, pissar och skiter ENBART certifierade BANGERS. Allt han rör vid blir till guld.
Förlåt men det är så tråkigt? Jag vill ju vara en kille som gillar Stevie, och Ingen ifrågasätter att grabben är ett musikaliskt hypergeni, men känns alldeles för ofta som att han mest använder sin talang för att hitta det mest avancerade sättet att göra en tråkig låt. Och varför är alla låtarna 8 minuter långa?? Inget händer? Tycker det blir som bäst när han lutar sig in i funk eller i fusion, men det äääär för många trista poplåtar

When I was growing up, hearing these songs on the radio are my first memory of Stevie Wonder. I didn't pay much attention at the time and in the mid-80's in his, "I just Called To Say I Loved You" popularity phase, it was hard to ignore (but I did!) because his music was everywhere! Looking back now, the music from the seventies, his "classic" period, really wasn't that bad. Songs In The Key Of Life is critically acclaimed and award winning, the songs are fine and there was some joy to be had listening to this album. Which I guess means I kinda liked it...

Stevie Wonder was pretty great and that includes this album. It's definitely on the long side and could have benefited from cutting some of the less exciting songs. But there are some fantastic tracks on here such as As or Another Star and the album has a lot of variety going for it.
Love this album. It’ weird to hear the source of some famous samples sometimes,
‘Love’s in Need of Love Today’ is typical Stevie sounding song and didn’t think was a good opening song for where the album goes. Lennon sang ‘God is a concept by which we measure our pain’ and guess I haven’t had much pain because I don’t believe in that mumbo jumbo so ‘Have a Talk With God’ didn’t resonate with me. Lyrical flow of ‘Village Ghetto Land’ didn’t seem to work, odd and clunky. But then the album kicks into high gear. ‘Contusion’ was an enjoyable funky little ditty, even without. ‘Sir Duke’ and ‘I Wish’ were always a hit with me with the latter having me bopping in my chair wishing I was on a dance floor. ‘Knocks me off my feet’ slows things down pretty quickly and I’ve definitely have had enough of silly love songs, I don’t care what McCartney thinks. Embarrassed to admit but did not realize ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ was a remix of ‘Pastime Paradise’. Loved it! Meh to ‘Summer Soft’ and ‘Ordinary Pain’. ‘Isn’t She Lovely’ is what it is; a solid classic. More about love with ‘Joy Inside my Tears’ and I’m definitely over it. ‘Black Man’ brings it back up and possibly the song I liked the most as a whole; good tune, impactful and thought-provoking lyrics supported with Stevie’s unmistakable voice. Was considering 4 star, and I know many believe this is Stevie’s best album but the rest of the album didn’t do much for me (save maybe the music from ‘Another Star’ but just another love song) and dragged the album down to a 3 star rating for me.

Enjoyed this, 1st time listening to a Stevie album, only familiar w the big hits. Loved the funk, wasn't into the jazz. I'll own it, I don't care for Contusion. Some of the slower lovey songs got a little long for me. Depressing how relevant some of these lyrics are 45 yrs later. My Highlights! Simply put, it's a classic album by one of the world's greatest artists. Pretty much have to give it five stars, although it may be a little biased because I grew up listening to Stevie Wonder.

Even though I've heard most of these songs a million times, sitting down and listening through was incredible. The songwriting, vocal performances, and the playing - all so so good. And the production is great!

A sprawling thing of joy. Not entirely my thing – I think I prefer Talking Book – but incredibly influential and surprisingly consistent given a) its length and b) the fact it's his EIGHTEENTH ALBUM.
No brainer! I love Stevie....and this album is the best of the best. He is a craftsman sitting behind the keyboard, a sound that just fills the heart and soul with rhythm, a classic! His voice so his own. So much talent accumulated into one body.

If you listen to this 💿 it is full of Stevie’s love for so many areas of his life: Sir Duke, I wish, isn’t She Lovely, As , are just unforgettable for me. Then learning he was blind soon after birth you realize you are in the presence of one of Gods gift to us all…appropriately named Wonder!! Such a cool cover in the 70’s. Superstitions was unforgettable too
I've been just putting ratings on these last few albums because it's a lot to catch up on but wanted to make a note about this one. This was a fantastic album, the original longer than one CD type album and I was here for it. Yes it ran long, and yes there were some that I wasn't a fan of, but I could feel the bones of so many current day songs within this album just like Stevie mentioned with Pastors Paradise and others. Stevie Wonder truly is that, and it is incredible that he gifted this album to the world and felt the need to make so much music within one timeframe. I can't wait to listen to some of these again.
Wow, first time I've had two in a row that I own on vinyl, and it's while I'm on vacation. Classic. This is an album that I've somehow never listened to fully before, but boy was I missing out. I just didn't know Stevie's catalog like that. Man, there are so many unbelievable jams on here. Songs I've heard, songs I've never heard before, songs I didn't realize were actually Stevie's. Pastime Paradise--I didn't know that was the original prior to Gansta's Paradise (which became Amish Paradish courtesy of Weird Al). But of all the songs on here, "If It's Magic" stopped me in my tracks. Almost brought me to tears. Never heard that before, and it's impossibly lovely. Such beautiful lyrics, chord changes, and melody. The harp is perfect. Man, what a perfect song. Even without that track, this would get a 4.5 but I'm going with another 5 star here. The album runs a bit long, but the tracks I loved accounted for an entire hour. I'll be returning to this quite a bit. Favorite tracks: If It's Magic, Isn't She Lovely, I Wish, Sir Duke, As, Another Star, Pastime Paradise. Album art: Iconic. Seen this a million times. This and Talking Book are my favorites from him. Such a cool, warm design. 5/5

This is when I knew for sure I’d been over generous with my ratings. This is a five star plus! This album is one of the greatest accomplishments in human history- what a privilege to share the planet with this man. The music just pours out of him, reinventing music along the way. Searing social commentary, history lessons, love songs for your beloved (unsatisfied presenting one of the prettiest love songs ever written in Knock Me Off My Feet, Mr Wonder just adds another with the euphoric As), love songs for your baby, straight up dance tracks, autobiography, spirituality - is there a topic Stevie isn’t inspired to write about? And the album isn’t some hodgepodge - somehow these diverse tones find a consistency and cohesion from the beautiful production throughout and the quality of the musicianship. Songs in the Key of Life, indeed.
7/10. I’d want to score this higher because it has some amazing tracks but it’s just too fucking long , I know this would be a 5 star single album if they had just cut it down

5.0 + For its production, songwriting, vocals, instrumentation and message of love and acceptance, this album lives on a higher plane than almost any other piece of music. I've listened to this album countless times, and it still inspires awe. He wrote and performed everything on here, and what's more, this album closes the greatest consecutive run of albums released by arguably any music act ever. Such sublime highs at every corner. For me, this might be my one desert island record.
Every other song, I had a moment of "OH THIS SONG". So iconic. I just felt the album was a little long.

Fantastic by almost all accounts. The album is quite long and does begin to drag after "As" and the synths used throughout are a bit dated. However, the hits can't possibly be denied. I mean, Sir Duke... It's Sir Duke.

This is difficult to score. The great tracks are legendaril awesome, but there's a lot of mediocre filling the space between them. This would have been a much better album if there was less of it.
There is no doubt that Stevie Wonder is an absolute musical genius. Incredible songs, incredible groove, incredible musicianship. I do feel that the album is way too long. The quality is there throughout, but it feels like it should have been split into two separate offerings. Also, I found the child noises throughout 'Isn't She Lovely' pretty annoying - they take you away from the music. Regardless, Stevie absolutely deserves his legendary status, and this album absolutely deserves to be on this list.

Yeah, I just listened to Stevie Wonder's 'Songs in the Key of Life', and I need you to take all of the 5 stars I've given up to this point and just toss those out because those albums don't deserve them anymore." Apparently this was Stevie's EIGHTEENTH album? Like, I think by the time you hit eighteen you're allowed to start phoning it in a little bit, you know, you've got to be running out of material, right? Not for Stevie Wonder; this magnificent bastard must have gone "Oh, actually, this one's going to be a double album because I'm just that damn creative. Actually, can we squeeze in three MORE songs on an EP and ship them all together? I need to get some of these tracks out of here, they're really cluttering up my house." That's what blows me away; despite the hour forty-five runtime, the songs never grow stale, and not a single track doesn't carry its weight. There's a scene in the Iliad where Hephaestus crafts a shield for Achilles, and the book spends like four pages detailing the intricate scenes that the God of the Forge is able to shape into this shield. Problem is, you'll never see that god-crafted shield, and words will never be able to adequately describe its divine beauty. With that in mind: you *can* listen to this album. 6 out of 5 stars.
Oh man very familiar with this album. Fucking pristine tracks cover to cover. Have A Talk With God up next to Village Ghetto Land is lots of whiplash. Contusion!! Sir Duke sparkles like a new copper penny with lush orchestration and feels just as joyful as when it was first made. Then to hit the listener with I Wish. Past time Paradise is a great track. I mean everything on here is a great track. Even the Extra LP tracks add a bunch of great tunes.

A brilliant sprawling mess of greatness with an immense legacy. Every R&B, hip-hop and soul album since owes something to this album. So does rock and pop really. And then there’s the house and dance music genres which have also borrowed liberally from this record. The breadth and depth of musical styles and emotions, and the way these are weaved together throughout and speak to us is why this album is so good and why it will always resonate. And that’s the key here. In a cynical world so often full of gloom and pessimism, anger and despair, love will always the save day and that’s what Songs In The Key Of Life is ultimately about.

Super pleasant listen! I don't think anyone can dislike Stevie Wonder. It's good background music. But the album is soooooo long, I wouldn't be able to listen without doing something busy or else I would get bored.
Excelente álbum. La música cautiva a primera escucha con su groove hipnótico y con sus excelentes baladas. Sin embargo, me atrevo a decir que su duración le arrebata el título de obra maestra, especialmente la segunda mitad que es un poco menos concisa y apretada que la primera. Nonostante la durata di quest'album vada oltre i miei standard, l'ho ascoltato almeno tre volte prima di decidermi. Non so che dire regà, è tipo curato a livelli maniacali! L'ultima volta, l'ho ascoltato con le cuffie e sono rimasto colpito ancora di più dai dettagli che mi ero perso. Ogni cosa si incastra alla perfezione. A livello compositivo lui è un genio. Quindi concludo dicendo che il mio voto nasce proprio da tutti quei dettagli che caratterizzano la sua musica e dal fatto che riconosco una certa visione nel suo modo di scrivere che a me è quasi aliena.
I enjoyed disc one and Pastime Paradise was a surprise! Disc two was kind of a slog to listen too. The length of the album wore me down and it wasn’t different enough to keep me interested the whole way.
An absolute masterpiece from top to bottom. Stevie sings with passion and soul and meaning, and his instrumentation is never better than it is here. The album is definitely front loaded with the hits but it’s also just a wonderful listen as an album. Top 20 all time for me, maybe top 10.

Never heard the non-singles. Wow, Contusion is one of the best he's ever written. This deserves its reputation. Although.... most of the vamps go on like 2x too long, and it's a repeated problem so it gets kinda distracting. Ordinary Pain's vamp is great, the rest kinda go nowhere.

Ordinary Pain: Figa la coda alla fine Isn't she lovely: No dai, l'assolo de armonica è veramente eccessivo. Black Man: Forse la tira un po' per le lunghe però figa. As: Mazza questa è figa forte. La smattatura finale m'ha fatto venì la pelle d'oca, non possono non tenerne conto.. Another Star: Pure questo figo ammazza, se l'è lasciati tutti per la fine. Ebony Eyes: Vale solo per l'assolo di chitarra fatto co la voce. All Day Sucker: L'arrangiamento è bello sbroccato, figo il basso e l'andamento mezzo funk ma zoppicante. Il vecchio Tonino non glie l'avrebbe mai fatto fa sto pezzo. In conclusione: Minchia! E' partito veramente male con la prima che secondo me è indubbiamente la peggiore del disco, ma poi è decisamente ripartito. Io Stevie Wonder me lo ricordavo molto più sciapetto e invece cazzo zio Stevie je l'ammolla! Si sente che questo era il periodo in cui i musicisti erano veramente forti, la maggior parte dei pezzi so un pretesto per cazzeggiare e molti dei pezzi so tipo come vorrei fa i pezzi io: 1 minuto de pezzo e 5 de finale. Diciamo che se sente l'influenza '70 e RnB e quando partono le ballatone so proprio na smarmellatura de palle, però quando è figo è veramente figo. Tra l'altro suona da paura non se sa come fa, non sembra per niente un disco del 76 se non fosse per i vari synth. M'ha lasciato la voglia di risentirlo.
Stevie wonder groova come pochi e si sentono solo piccoli accenni alle polpette degli anni successivi. A volte si sta sull’orlo dell’esagerazione ma si rimane cool.
Such an incredible album, I think it's one of Stevie's best, if not the best album of his. My favourite songs are Sir Duke, Have A Talk With God, Pastime Paradise and Isn't She Lovely. 5/5 stars.
jeez its long. am i supposed to listen to the reissue? suuuuuper nice start. lol i'd never listened to the song that gangster paradise samples. baby at the start of isnt she lovely scared the shit out of me lol. theres this little camera shutter sound that made me think i was accidentally taking screenshots lol. im done, album was VERY good but im conflicted if i like the length or not lol cause its not easy making a long album work and this really works i think. but its a little much, almost 2 hours long. i was sorta ready for it to be done before the last 4 tracks. curious if ill come back to it.
Es bastante bueno, pero las canciones son larguísimas y da la sensación de ser interminable. Fuera de eso está bastante bien.

I've never heard this album, but I've heard a few of the tracks and songs that have sampled from these tracks. My favorite track from this first listen was the instrumental "Contusion", followed by "Sir Duke" and "Have a Talk With God". I don't see myself sitting down to listen to the whole album again. 3 stars. (On a side note, ¿How could Coolio be upset about Weird Al's parody of "Gangsta's Paradise", when Coolio sampled SO MUCH of Stevie's "Pastime Paradise"?)
stevie wonder. a classic. he has a number of incredible hits. excellent songs. beautiful lyrics. excellent vibes all around.
It's not perfect and I prefer the tighter Talking Book / Innervisions but jesus, what a talent.

Stevie Wonder is one of those widely and passionately loved musicians whose talent and work I can appreciate, and whose importance in, and influence on, music is absolutely huge, yet I just never really felt all that interested in what I was hearing. I don't dislike it, it just never clicked with me.

Good album if you like this sort of thing...however I found the sameness of the singing a bit tedious and some of the songs inordinately long. At 21 tracks its just too much boredom for one sitting.
Classics. Kinda funk jazz soul. 'Contusion' had Thundercat vibes. 'Pastime Paradise' was the track Coolio sampled for Gangsters Paradise. Got a bored after halfway but it picks up again. 'As' is a great track. 3 stars

Look, it's not for me. There's no doubting the musicianship, talent and it's seminal place in music history. But I just don't really like it.
This album is full of hits and one I will go back to forever. Amazing all around.
