Interesting but not for me

I really wanted to like this album, but I just couldn’t get into it. Her vocals were good, but the overall sound of the album just didn’t quite work for me.

Good album to throw on when the mood calls for it.

Not much for me here. Breathy vocals and an ethereal sound, but the stories being told were not very interesting for me. Deeper Understanding stands out as particularly odd, apparently to make a phone call you have to 'press execute' hahaha

I can understand the importance of this album or even the importance of Kate Bush, but her songs are absolutely not for me....anything between an elevator song and strange 70's rock. Sounds like a bad flashback playlist.

The question is...have I had enough Bush? Somehow the answer is Yes :) I sampled each song enough to be affirmed that I'm much more of a chest man.

Okay, I really liked Hounds of Love, but this album is not *nearly* as enjoyable. Two albums deep into the Bush, I think I can safely say that I love Kate when she's being WEIRD, and that I cannot stand her when she is playing by the numbers. I think about 80% of this album is by the numbers. The standout exceptions are The Fog and Deeper Understanding. The Fog features some frantic rhythms and fun soundbites. Deeper Understanding is WEIRD and FUN. I love the story of Kate falling in love with a computer. Extremely prescient for 1989. Probably won't ever listen to this again until I literally die

Not as 'sensual' as I thought it would be. The singing is whisper soft while the instrumentals seem to crowd over them. The title track is good but I found most almost too hard to get into(at least lyrically) due to the soft singing.

Ok, Kate Bush! Hatte letztes Jahr eine Phase, in der ich Cloudbusting, Running Up That Hill und Babooshka in Dauerschleife gehört habe. Dann mal los: Musik zum kiffen und Liebe machen. Oder bekifft Liebe machen oder so. Kommt beim ersten hören nicht so recht in die Gänge, dafür sind die Songs zu komplex. Ich hab aber auch keine Lust, das noch mal zu hören, ist mir zu eso. 2 Sterne.

I think I really liked every other song

Rating this as a 2 is a bit of a breakthrough. Growing up I hated Kate Bush so much just the mere mention of her name would elicit groans from me. This album isn't horrible, surprisingly. It's not really my kind of thing, but it's listenable and there are some really interesting things happening in the music and arrangements. I don't hate it.

Forgot most of it by the time I'm writing this review so that says most of it. The Fog was memorable and enjoyable, the rest of the record not so much.

A couple of the songs aren't too bad tbh but it's also full of whimsical artsy stuff that leaves me cold. Sometimes you can hear her lips smack cause the mic is so close to her mouth to pick up the waifier moments... ew. Styles itself as high art because the lyrics are based on penguin classics etc. Not my thing but it also comes across as a total labour of love. 2/5.

Again, Kate Bush is a piece of marvel, her albums are a full visual, sound, emotional, dreamy experience. Definitely doesn't vibe with my grumpiness.

I always feel like I should like Kate Bush, but then I listen and there’s just too much pointless warbling.

Terrible voice. Melodies sound like they’re being made up on the spot. Instrumentation is trash and lacks tonality.

This had me running down that hill.

I don’t know where to begin. Even if you can get past the feigned vocal morphing to hide an absence of range. Or even if you get past the insipid lyrics, play the last 20 seconds of ‘Love And Anger’ into the first 20 seconds of ‘The Fog’ and please explain how this is an artist that takes their craft seriously.

This sounds like it was made for middle aged women on a retreat to regain their sexuality

Don’t get me wrong I quite like Kate Bush. I even own this LP on vinyl. But it’s rubbish. She’s done the late 80’s thing of getting big name musicians in - Alan Stivel, Mick Karn, the Bulgarian Voices. And some of the performances are good. But it results in an incoherent mush with Kate wailing above.

There are so many boring songs on this album.

This album is from when she had started making music to please herself, and not the buying public. And why shouldn't she. In essence that is what all musicians should do. And it's where Kurt Cobain fell down. But it means your left with an album that is all filler, no thriller. Earlier albums all had a couple of hit singles on them, this has nothing. Why should it? If that is what she wants then why not, but in all honesty I can't give it higher than a 1. For me this has nothing going for it.

Surprised how much I disliked this album. Felt very unsatisfying, and a lot of songs were lacking any real sound depth or counter-melodies in lower voices. There is also a register that Kate Bush hits at least once a song that I find very grating.

It's not often I'm left scratching my head asking "Who is this for, exactly?", but that is exactly what happened by the time I'd reached track three of "The Sensual World." If you told me that the people of East Berlin tore the Berlin Wall down to get away from a Soviet-attendance-mandated Kate Bush concert in 1989 I would believe you, no questions. "This Woman's Work" is the only tolerable song on this album. It has been put to good use in charity appeal commercials over the years.

Mostly weird. Didn't enjoy it really.

Progressive Pop with a vocalists which wander aimlessly, rarely, if ever, approaching anything resembling a melody, let alone a legitimate hook while loosing me exhausted by trying to follow.

Can't do it. I have tried enough times over the decades (even went to her concert) and have had to surmise that there’s really no depth to about 90% of her meandering soft focus new age depresso-pop. Others will disagree vehemently, but for me there is only one worthy listen on this album and it is This Woman's Work.

Sigh, I already feel uneasy about listening to this album. It's probably the hardest listen so far of this challenge. This Woman's work was my only highlight, solely because they used it in an It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia episode. 1/10

English Yoko Ono. Interesting instrumentation and presentation but it just comes out as "Tears for Fears but worse". Fav Track: Between a Man and a Woman (I guess)

This album comes across very dated and I hated the mixing, it sounded like she was really far away. Far too New Wavey sounding for me.

She's got a distinct sound, style, vocal, and musical arrangement that just isn't similar to anyone else. It is unclear to me how Kate Bush can have more than one album in the 1001 collection when they all sound the same.

I didn't like the first Kate Bush album we had to listen to, and I like this one less. Like a lot less. This annoyed the crap out of me. Her voice is just so annoying.

That was a struggle. Her voice was grating, there were weird string accompaniments that felt really outta place. Even the hit "This Woman's Work" seemed really abbreviated. I like to think I have a somewhat wide taste in music as far at least tolerating different varieties but this one was testing that.

Fuck off Kate Bush.

After eating a whole head of human shit for brunch, I wasn't in the mood to listen to this wretched record, which has more in common with a lost amazonian tribe that it does with modern music. An exceptional waste of time and effort.

Couldn’t make it through this one

Couldn'y really get into it. The music felt a little to all over the place. And I kept hearing instruments sounding either off tune or out of sync with the rest of the band. I'm sure it was styled that way, but just didn't sound right to me.

I do like Kate's voice.....in 1-2 song increments. But the songs themselves were not that good. It's almost like they just slapped together some music and figured that nobody would notice because of her voice. Honestly, except for "This Woman's Work", it sounded like she was singing the same tune just with different backing tracks.

This reminded me of everything I hated about 80s pop. I delayed it all day until I was cleaning the house. I put it on all the speakers in the background, and it still managed to ruin housecleaning.

In that section of the world of arts where things are weird seemingly deliberately, "The Sensual World" is right at home. Kate Bush seems to sing from the back of her throat, very rarely belting out lyrics from her whole being. The title track paints a desperate overly saturated picture of a romance novel's cover art, heavily implicating that maybe this album is not just by a woman, but perhaps even for women. In the world of 1989 finding love in a computer from a program ordered from a magazine is either super weird or remarkably prescient, or both. "Deeper Understanding" could have been a metaphor in 1989, but today a person might hear the song and wish for a voice console that meets intimate needs. The addictive properties of personal computing that current (2022) society deals with compared to how it was in 1989 is largely amplified to include the need for family interventions. As the song progresses, even the lyrics break down into the broken brevity of computed language. As far as an opinion on the album, at least this is slightly better than Suzanne Vega anything, and that's generous.

I don't know what the odds are but I am disappointed i got two kate bush albums in a row. As I said in my last review I really don't like her style, so I didn't even listen to the album. The first 2 songs were listenable but not enjoyable didn't even go any further. 1/5 ):
