Always a great listen!

Can’t go wrong with Queen. Love this album.

Best music and wish Freddy were alive today

I've been a Queen fan for a long time, but I've never listened to this album front to back. There are a lot of hidden gems on here that didn't become mainstream hits. These gems are on the same level of those hits in my book.

underrated

Fabulous and yet I didn’t know many of the songs prior

Really enjoyed this record very unique. It’s queen Freddie Mercury’s voice isn’t that full strength yet but definitely gives a great performance. classic album glad I’m getting into Queen. Five stars enjoyed every song took a couple play through, but I found enjoyment in every song.

queening it

Opening an album with a classical counterpoint composition for a bunch of guitars might just be the most Queen thing they've ever done and I love it. This entire album is also the most Queen thing they've ever done and I love it. It's like they heard Tommy and went "let's do that, but, like, WAY more gay." They certainly succeeded on that front. There's no shot a straight guy could make The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke. Anyways, Side B of this album is the best thing Queen ever did and Side A isn't very far behind. I'm already incredibly partial towards 70s Prog. Queen doing it really brings out the best parts.

Dramatic and exciting. Really fucked with it.

One of the albums I grew up with, love it.

Increíble, removió sentimientos únicos

Mid 70s magic touched many artists. Queen was no exception. Overshadowed by many other triumphantly stellar albums, this one belongs in the conversation as one of the greatest rock albums of all time...and yet Rolling Stone Magazine does not place it in their top 500. Robert Dimery, you make a lot of weird choices, but hats off to you for this one. (Even if you have 501 more chambers to load.)

Very emotional

Queen are bedsides the Beatles my favourite band, obviously the hits are huge but people accuse them of being only a singles band which is a huge disservice to their musical abilities as a group. This is the album that they start sounding like queen but still have a very prog sounding sound about them. The songs on this record are great and as a concept album this is a great inclusion with the light side and dark side. The vocal harmonies are amazing and what I feel they took from the Beatles and elevated to a level that most other bands couldn’t replicate. Great album and incredibly fun to listen to

i would sacrifice every living singer to bring Freddy back.

nee queen

Great album listened to some songs before but never the entire thing. Good listening experience

A lot of heavy hitters this week. They really go hard on some of these older tracks. Seven Seas of Rhye is one of my favorites, and I really enjoyed Ogre Fight and The March of the Black Queen as well. Really solid album throughout. I like how some of the songs transition into each other like they're chapters in a story.

I dare say that this album is one of those you MUST really listen to before you die. Band, incredible; album, very good and spectacular songs. Each sound seems to me simply harmonious with each other. This band is already well known, and I understand why. Very good album and that's it.

A lot of the so called ‘big bands/artists’ flatter to deceive with albums that really aren’t great outside the big, well known hits. However from both offerings we’ve had so far Queen seem to buck this trend. Through this I’ve discovered many great songs of theirs I’ve never heard of as I’d always just been aware of the hits. Their albums are actually full of great songs and this one doesn’t disappoint. Really liked the album as a a whole and a number of really good songs on it. The more I listened the more it grew on me. Superb.

IT's Queen. Some classics and some deep cuts.

It’s queen - need I say more?

good shit

White queen

My favourite Queen album is Sheer Heart Attack, but Queen II is definitely up there too. It feels more like an actual album than a collection of singles, which wasn't true of most of Queen's discography.

Incredible work of art.

im a pretty big fan! I dont really have a great analysis, but this is the one album wherre I had to stop what I was doing to listen to each song and contemplate, is this my favorite song of the album? Theres just a lot of fun and variaty in it.

70’s queen were the best version of the band.

Wow, so much better than newer Queen

Not a lot of pop hits, but total banger.

Queen always a Queen

Queen at probably their most prog for an album, and it's about as peak as one would expect. Not exactly the Queen most people know, but at Queen's core is the glammy/prog spirit with that wonderful dash of hard rock that bleeds somewhat into metal (for 70s standards).

I wouldn't consider myself a particularly big Queen fan, outside of their bigger hits, but even with my general apathy for the rock opera genre, I have to admit Queen is still one of the most impressive bands of all time. The songs dance between silly, fun, and somber, and are enjoyable in almost any setting. With anyone else I'd rate it lower, but Queen is just that good.

Oh peak

Quite simply the collection of songs committed to vinyl

Exceptional album... All of tracks were better than the other, must listen

I love Queen so much. The loose Fantasy themes mixed with the band’s early rock stylings and beginnings of their signature dense vocal harmonies is *chef’s kiss.* Queen will just continue to getting more awesome moving forward.

legendary and genuinely!

One of my favorite Queen Albums. Loved the sides labeled white and black. Very hard rock for queen. Queen was learning how to use a studio as an instrument. Best to listen thru headphones.

My first full Queen album I'm every listening to! I'm excited! I hope it's good! Obviously I've heard songs here and there before, but never an album of theirs in full. Holy shit, so I expected this to be good but I didn't expect it to be this good? I'm genuinely shocked? The run from "Orge Battle" to "The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke" to "Nevermore" is so so good! This whole album was so far beyond what I was expecting, wow. I now understand why people have said The Last Dinner Party is reminiscent of them

Probably the best Queen album. Full of fairytale magic and interesting compositions.

Masterpiece in queeness

BEST OF THE BEST

I've never delved into a Queen album before, having only ever listened to the singles but I thoroughly enjoyed it. One of the tracks felt as though it had elements of the later 'Bohemian Rhapsody' which was really interesting to listen to.

Freddie Mercury really was that guy

classic so good !!! 10/10

It's fun listening to this and noting the connections to bands like Iron Maiden I've listened to in past 1001 days. Great album.

Never had heard of any of these songs before but they’re all amazing

Heavier than one might expect.

What can be said here? 1000/10

The entirety of Side Black is unbelievably epic, and this album is phenomenal based on the strength of that alone.

Classic Queen sound, it’s everything I expect from them. Not sure why this album wasn’t as popular as others, but it’s no less amazing to listen to.

Not perfect but SLAPS

I LOVE QUEEN

Is this the real life

👍🏻

Queeeeeen

Damn good.

Queen can’t do any wrong!!

Me initially: I don’t recognize a single track in this album. Me as it went on: Ok, I get it—this album rocks. I don’t think I could point to a single song in this album that really shines above the rest, but as a whole, this album is near perfect. Before this, I liked, didn’t love, Queen. But this album increased my appreciation for the band substantially. It earns my 11th 5/5.

Queen is so wonderfully bombastic and operatic. Queen II delivers perfectly on that approach. Freddie’s incredible vocals elevate the high energy guitar and powerful keyboard to an almost fantasy quality. The harmonies and backup vocals add so much to giving this entire album a sense of adventure and journey. Absolutely worth your time to fall in love with this album.

I had never heard this album , but It might become one of my favorites.

I've always loved Queen and, like many others, know all the 'hits' but haven't listened to any album on its own before. This is incredible. I, ashamedly, hadn't heard anything off this record before and boy do I regret never listening sooner. The first half is a mix of Freddie and Brian/Roger on vocals, and the second half is an all out Freddiethon. The entire album is just fantastic and quite heavy. I love the fantasy element of the second half, starting with Ogre Battle and ending with Nevermore. The March of the Black Queen is a sort of precursor to BoRap, with the 6:32 runtime and variety of sounds/song parts. Overall, the best album I've had on this list so far and my first 5/5. A masterpiece.

My favorite queen album!! Probably their most prog and I LOVE it!! Just a very easy listen that I come back to all the time.

Worth revisting often

I don't think I heard anything off of this album before, but it was still one of the best rock albums I've listened to.

Dramatiskt, kraftfullt och fantasifullt. Älskar.

It's Queen. Yes, please.

¡¡Estupendo disco!!

The best of all times

I love Queen! Anything less than 5 stars is blasphemy.

I am only familiar with the hits by Queen, but this was still just great.

classic; no words

5/5 lovely

This is #day452 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here's to my second Queen album on the list, aptly titled Queen II. It's probably my first time listening to it in full, though I've long considered the band one of my favorites from the classic rock era, and am quite familiar with their discography. You can definitely hear how this record helped shape their sound in the years to come. Is this the most prog Queen you'll ever hear? Quite likely. "Lose In The End" was quite an eye-opener. Also, the cover is one of the most iconic ever. This is a 5 out of 5. Looking forward to #day453.

really really cool queen album that i basically did not know at all! loved the storyline

A really good album from beginning to end. 5 stars or A-.

Love a bit of queen. Top man, top songs.

Tämä on läpikotaisin tuttu bändi. Olen ollut bändin fani jo vuodesta -86. Levykin on löytynyt omasta hyllystä jo yli 35 vuotta. Tämä albumi on tosin mielestäni yksi Queenin huonoimmista. Biisit on liian progea mun makuuni ja tää on vähiten kuuntelemani bändin tuotannosta. Paras biisi on säästetty viimeiseksi, eli ”Seven Seas of Rhye”.

Top 3 songs March of the black queen Ogre battle Father to son Very operatic some songs could be in a musical Hints of early led Zeppelin There's a reason queen are so great

A Night At The Opera is great, Sheer Heart Attack is fantastic. Queen II is Queen's best album. The whole album is diverse, dynamic and filled with great melodies and sounds. You can't top this. Queen couldn't top this. Father To Son is so heavy and epic, White Queen (As It Begun) is vulnerable, yet hopeful, A Loser In The End is the song that everyone hates from this album, but even it is so full of fun. Nevermore is the best Queen ballad. March Of The Black Queen is probably the only Queen song that tops Bohemian Rhapsody and is my favourite songs by them. Queen's 80s stuff like I Want To Break Free, One Vision and Invisible Man is good, but THIS is the Queen that I love really deeply in my heart and connect to. There's literally not a bad thing I can say about this album. One of the easiest 5 in this list.

thumbs up

yet another incredibly classy and dramatic rock album from queen. have these guys ever made a bad album? i have a feeling that some queen fans might be able to fill me in. but that's besides the point, let's talk about this one. this album is ambitious and experimental. compared to their later work and more iconic tracks, queen has less of a "pop" sound and more of a progressive, neoclassical rock soundscape. the record's two sides are labeled "side white" and "side black", a set of songs depending on your mood. it whisks listeners away into an introspective fantasy ride of rock... it's totally awesome.

Day635 - i’m ready for my quest now

Deb score

Absolute banger!

Fucking awesome. Wild lyrics of ogres and fairy's, closing with my favorite Queen track

An album where I liked the back half more, pretty rare. The consistent theme was lovely along with the sick harmonies, very engaging.

This was actually my first time sitting down with a Queen album and listening from start to finish. I grew up on the Greatest Hit records. This record blew me tf away. That’s really all I can say about it.

It’s so gooooood

It’s such a defining album for their style coming from Queen I

I imagine it's very easy for a lot of people to think of Queen as only being a singles band. After all, I'm pretty sure their best-selling album is their first greatest hits record — and I can't say I entirely blame 'em. I dig that set a lot, and even more so the follow-up containing latter day hits. I don't think I'd blame anyone for not knowing that, way back in the day, Queen was honestly a really good **album** band. And no album better emphasizes that then their only one without hits (unless you live in Japan, I think): 'Queen II.' This, to me, is one of those albums like 'Off The Wall' or 'The Beach Boys Today!,' where while it may not be their **greatest** album, it sure as hell is in the lead for being their most **important**. I mean, you take a look back at their eponymous debut, and it's... Good. Pretty good, all things considered. But it's incredibly primordial. It's Queen back when they weren't terribly much more than a hard rock with some prog and fantasy inclinations. You could honestly discuss them in the same breath as, say, Led Zeppelin, The Who or even, I'unno, Grand Funk Railroad. It's kind of like early Rush, come to think of it. If they'd kept on this route, they might've been remembered for a hit or two, but I don't think anyone would've been clamoring to come back to their full albums. But with album 2, they introduced the secret sauce that caused Queen to graduate to a class all their own. If you were to ask me what makes Queen who they are, it would be, 100%, the theatrics. Queen is a very theatrical band, even at their most hard rock or arena rock pop. Between Freddie's vocals and Brian May's near-symphonic multi-guitar arrangements... This album is where they first lean into it, and would only dive deeper until hitting a climax on their masterwork, 'A Night At The Opera.' It truly needs to be appreciated for that. Even beyond any kind of historical significance, though... Damn, it's just a good as hell album. My go-to stretch of Queen studio albums starts here (and goes all the way to, honestly, 'A Day At The Races'). It's just one incredible tune after another, from the live set favorite "Father To Son", to the beautifully tragic "White Queen (As It Began)", to the crushing "Ogre Battle", and all the way to the album's centerpiece: "The March Of The Black Queen". Bar none, this is the best song on the album. It's practically a prototype "Bohemian Rhapsody", though let's not let any comparisons to **that song** overshadow this one. It's an epic all unto itself — and apparently it was a hit in Japan? So says the 'Greatest Hits In Japan' compilation, anyway. (That comp also has a version of the song without the transition into "Funny How Love Is", if y'ever wanna appreciate it on its own — though seriously, this album is such a strong listen, it's really better if you hear it and every other track in context.) And I'd be remiss to go this whole review without mentioning John Deacon and Roger Taylor, the backbone of the band. Deacon's a real mother on the bass, and Taylor can damn pound his set when he wants to — and his vocals aren't bad either. I could go on, but like my fellow group member said, it's an album that's better heard than described. I'm even surprised I managed to write **this much**, y'know? If you're someone who only knows Queen as a singles band, I really recommend you give this album a listen. And of course the other two that're included on this list, but this one in particular is special. It ain't a cult favorite, y'know? So, hey, you can come along on a trip to the seven seas of Rhye, and you can really appreciate just a little more what made Queen as incredible a band as they were — as they began, and as they always will be.

Queen I is a good album, no doubt, but This Album is where the legend known as Queen truly begins. Solid 5 Stars.

I’m at a 10. Hell, maybe higher. Everyone knows Queen, right? “We Will Rock You”, “We Are The Champions”, “Killer Queen”, “Another One Bites The Dust”, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Bicycle Race”, “Under Pressure”, etc, etc – an unbelievably strong stadium rock/pop catalog led by Freddie Mercury’s vocals with a spotlight on them brighter than the sun. People know Queen, even if they think they don’t. They’re that ubiquitous. This is my first full Queen album, and I found myself rather surprised that I knew absolutely nothing here. For a band defined by singles known the world, I found that extremely strange. I figured it would still be good as long as Freddie Mercury was… well, Freddie Mercury, but I also sort of had the assumption that this album was just here to represent an era of Queen before they went big. I am thankfully, extremely, extremely wrong – this is a fucking stunner of an album that somehow feels underrated, unknown & like a hidden gem in a catalog that includes more diamonds than a Tiffany ring. Nobody fucking told me Queen was a hard rock band with prog-esque sensibilities for their first two albums like this; much like Genesis, I think I had a vague awareness of a shift towards a more radio-oriented sound at some point, but I figured it wouldn’t be this steep. I suppose “Bohemian Rhapsody” is more of a last gasp of this era of the band, and we’ll get to that whenever we get “A Night at The Opera”, but this album feels like expanding Bohemian Rhapsody out to 40 minutes, and it is a fucking unstoppable avalanche by its second-half suite, with “The March of the Black Queen” acting as an unbelievable climax. I really wish I could describe more here, but I’ve just got broad praise, since I think this album is far better heard than it is described. I love the sort of medieval tone throughout with the lyricism, and I guess this is really where the name “Queen” makes a bit more sense. I think Freddie Mercury takes some time to warm up, but when he fully finds himself, he feels just as fucking stunning as he always does, especially on his held notes. Obviously, the rest of the band does a stellar job here, especially in the guitar / percussion work, and the tempos this thing eventually reaches feel electric. There are signs of the stadium success to come here, but it’s concentrated into much more of a heavy rock package as opposed to some great sports-y songs. It really is that good; I haven’t felt as in-sync with a rock band like that since the Black Sabbath album we got after Ozzy’s death (or, I suppose “Hot Rats” by Frank Zappa, but shh). I now have to acknowledge that Queen is likely far, far more than the strength of their singles, especially since this album only had one, and it wasn’t even the best track on the album (though it’s certainly up there). If this was sitting here, with this many great tracks, what the hell lies deeper in this pile? I’m extremely excited to find out, and I think that applies to their entire discography past the two albums left on the list. As far as this goes, it’s an easy, easy 10.

Queen fr fr

I really don’t want to another queen record but this was great

I am definitely the opinion that the earlier albums of Queen were far the better ones, the later albums are too much "pop-music". But this is not one of the highlight. Yes, it has "Seven Seas Of Rhye". Yes, it has everything which make Queen so special (especially in the early times). But no, it is simply not as good as Queen I, A Night At the Opera or A Day At The Races. Still, a great album.

king tbh

Every Queen album had better be on this list.

Heard Queen for as long as I can remember, so have heard this a lot. It’s overblown, excessive and Queen can get away with it. 5 Star

My first teen job was at Burger King, and one of the managers there loved Queen. He’d play them constantly, and this was back when radio stations would sometimes spin entire albums straight through. This record always takes me back to those days. Queen is undeniably one of the greatest bands of all time - Mercury’s voice, May’s guitar - it’s just a powerhouse of talent. Queen II was their “harder” album, but it still feels so fresh. It doesn’t fit neatly into rock, and it sure as hell doesn’t belong in hair metal. It’s just… Queen.

It’s a classical

Great album. You can see the foundation for this development.

Really good album. Of course I've heard individual tracks but this was the first time I've heard it in full. I don't think I have to say anything extra about it - I think it is marvelous, Mercuries' singing is simply perfect and it was nice listening to these songs.

I mean cmon

Could there be a more perfect set of people to be in a band? Incredible as always.

No sophomore slump here!

Another chance on this list to get acquainted with Queen albums in full instead of all the popular songs I know. This was another fantastic listen from them! 4.5 / 5

I'm not familiar with really a any of the tracks on this album. My experience of Queen was from the 80s onwards. But having gone back and listened to the self-titled debut album for context, this is the first album by the band that defined their sound for the rest of their career. This is the first rock opera album from one of the most influential and well known bands of the last 50 years. When you listen to this, just assume you've never heard anything like it before and you'll understand why it's on this list. Is it the best Queen album, no. Is it the start of something truly magical and musical. 100% yes. 5/5

Mästerlig rockopera!

The album in which Queen's vision becomes more realised, but isn't quite there, that comes next . If you are only familiar with Queen the icons and their hits, then this album will come as a surprise, even a shock. It's Progressive and Heavy (in places). Ambitious and influential. Its production still holds up today. Brian May is on fire throughout. Seven Seas of Rhye is probably the most well known song on this album, and the hit, reaching #10 in the UK charts. This album is from 1974, so very much of its time, times that were my formative listening years. This is one of my favourite Queen albums, so for me, just qualifies for 5 stars. Would I listen to this album again? Yes, I do, regularly. Would I buy this album? I did. 1 "Procession" - If you're coming at this albums backwards through the Queen catalogue you're going to think "what the hell is this?" Very much a 'Progressive Rock' introduction for a heavy 'Progressive Rock' album. - 4/5 2 "Father to Son" - Gloriously heavy. - 5/5 3 "White Queen (As It Began)" - "A delicate little number". - 5/5 4 "Some Day One Day" - 4/5 5 "The Loser in the End" - This is a real deep cut. This is heavy and features Roger Taylor on vocals. It has a groove about it, with the riff being similar to "Children of the Revolution". Brilliant. - 5/5 6 "Ogre Battle" - Fantastic. Brian May is quite superb as is John Deacon and Roger Taylor. Great riff. Crikey this song is heavy. And a gong! I love a gong. - 5/5 7 "The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke" - Great title. - 4/5 8 "Nevermore" - 4/5 9 "The March of the Black Queen" - This is where you can really hear where Queen are going to go with their sound. The dynamics and vocals are quite wonderful. The whole band is brilliant. - 5/5 10 "Funny How Love Is" - This has a lovely vocal melody. - 4/5 11 "Seven Seas of Rhye" - What a great song. I wish it was longer! - 5/5 Total -50 Average - 4.55

Ogre Battle should have been a bigger single. March of the Black Queen is unbelievable. This album should also be called “Queen Fucking Rocks” This albums contains all of the elements of peak Queen, exceptionally clear and layered guitar, abstract and harmonious lyrics, and sporadic arrangement. It’s stellar and intriguing. Also if you have one of the greatest vocalists of all time, you should definitely not let other members of the band sing.

What a wild ride! How is this new to me!?

Classic sounds of Queen; very enjoyable album

Always fun and sad

Man, that album was way out there for its time, right? Total prog-rock opera before anyone even knew what that was. Freddie was already a full-on rock god, just belting it out, and Brian May's guitar work was absolutely insane. How did he even do that stuff? It was definitely a trip, a little dark and dramatic for some, but if you were into that theatrical vibe, it was pretty epic. Not exactly "Bohemian Rhapsody" accessible, but a solid listen if you wanted to go on a journey with your headphones on.

Obviously excellent

I didn't know any of these songs. I recognized the title of the finale and thought I'd know it. I thought this was really great. I love the progressive experimentation in both songwriting and recording and I love the overdubbing work. I love that they had songs they'd been working on for years and wanted to save for when they were more experienced in the studio and knew how to execute their vision for them, as this is actually something I've done.

MASTERPIECE

It’s Queen. Nothing more to say.

Another excellent album, they hardly miss tbh. Highlights: White Queen (As It Began), The March of the Black Queen, See What A Fool I've Been

Amazing album, love the theme and it is on par/above other queen albums. Lyrics of orge battle fight are fantastic.

Operatic rock,super fun

A great album from Queen. Somehow I always seem to have overlooked this album. Maybe it was because of the rather boring title. It was particularly worthwhile to listen to it again after a long time. 5/5

Ah, early Queen, back in the days when they were more heavy metal. This album would probably be a shock to anyone who's only heard their later work (though it does contain a sort of hint at the direction they'd go, with Seven Seas of Rhye). It kicks ass though. Showcasing every band member's unique talent with their tool of choice. Brian May's guitar work on songs like Ogre Battle is of note, and Freddie's voice is as beautiful in its lower register as it is when he goes HIIIIIIIIIIIIGH. A must-hear album.

I am a huuuuuuuge Queen fan, and this is definitely in my top 3 Queen albums (behind only News of the World and Queen), so I was waiting for this one to come up. So many good songs on this album, and just an amazing sophomore album from a band that IMO was so much better in their early days than in their later ones -- more prog and less arena, more rock and less pop. Just amazing performances all around, combined with superb writing and awesome arrangement and attention to detail all around. I listened to it twice today, and I've probably listened to it 100 times before that. I remember buying this album in high school (late 90s) and falling asleep listening to it the first time. I had the most vivid dreams about Ogre Battle and I still daydream about it when I hear the song today. Anyway, easily five stars all day long and twice on Sunday.

I have def heard this - classic. Everything. Iconic.

I knew this album almost by heart on the 70s when it came out but hasn’t listened for ages. I thought I’d be giving it a 4 but after listening it’s definitely a 5. I remembered Ogre Battle as having pretty naff lyrics but OMG the guitar more than makes up for that. And then there are delicious little surprises like the “look into my eyes” interlude in the middle of Black Queen. Love it ❤️

Other than the hits my intro to the rest of the catalog, was it kinda goofy, yea, but you could tell they were piecing it together for later efforts, but still this one rocked. Procession had me thrown for a loop, but father to son, incredible, and it never really let up.

Super ambitious and proggy. Love this album. Never heard any of it before. 4.5

No surprise I loved this album since I love everything Queen. But this was a pleasant reminder of how killer this album is.

Didn’t expect it to be this heavy, or this good. Like progressive rock with all the boring bits surgically removed. Full of drama, riffs, and ridiculousness that somehow works. Absolutely soared.

esq iconic, i love theatric queen the march of the black queen, my beloved

I love how this album has two themes to it and how Queen pulls them off. They haven’t quite become Queen at this time with this album but you can definitely see them transforming into that.

I grew up with a mom who LOVED Queen and she got see them live in Oakland. Felt great to listen to an album with songs I'm not super familiar with. Fantastic as always!

I mean, come on

This was awesome, I'd never heard any of these songs before and they work so well as a full "opera" together. The sound is so unmistakably Queen, Mercury's singing is incredible and everything just feels so huge. The entire work has a super clean production and the segues between songs feel right. I don't know if I could pick a single out of here, because the whole of it is clearly meant to be listened to all the way through. I really enjoyed this, not a bad minute in here. Lyrically it's about half dungeons and dragons and I love it.

An excellent group of songs that were all brand new to me. Really packs a punch despite not having any recognizable singles on it. Fantastic.

Queen.

👨🏻 This was so good I listened at the gym

Great album

Wow. What an innovative album. Full of ups and downs and twists and turns that keeps you on your edge of your seat. It's not their best album but it's still great. They didn't have that much expectations to live up to and under the circumstance they COOKED. 5 stars

If you had only ever heard the Queen songs they play on the radio you would be super disoriented by this album. It's basically a prog rock masterpiece. I wish more people knew how great and weird Queen actually could be. Brilliant album that I'm ashamed to say I don't have on vinyl yet. 5/5

Early Queen is so dear to me, and this weird little album is one of my all time favourites. So happy we got this here.

Brilliant. Queen when they were still a rock band before the camp theatricals took over. Fantastic stuff. Seven Seas is their best ever.

Legendary rock, wouldn't want to listen to the songs too often as to not ruin the feeling of them.

I’ve never listened to a Queen album in full. I’ve heard the classic songs numerous times and never heard any of these songs here, but this album really caught me off guard. This is the kind of album that I wouldn’t listen to its songs individually or in a playlist but only in full, kind of like some of my favorite Pink Floyd albums. It works extremely well as a complete unit.

Fun inventive use of the two sides of the LP The white/May side is good but the black/Mercury side is really Queen coming into their own full-on. Freddie really gave a more vibrant canvas for the band to paint on. Some of these songs are every bit as good as the peak of Night at the Opera. Very glad I listened to this.

Majestic, brilliant.

Love this completely.

hell yea baby

Very good

Father to son and ogre battle are extremely underrated

Very good. 5/5

Actually thought it got better as it got going. Loved Ogre Battle. Seven Seas of Rye remains an absolute belter.

i mean yeah. it's queen. i don't think any of these songs specifically stand out to me but the album as a whole is really good

It's Queen's most Led Zeppelin-pilled album, so the easiest 5 I'll ever give. And if that ain't one of the GOAT blunt rotations. Just put down the pipe when Ogre Battle starts. Fastest way into a deep K hole known to man

Queen is one of those bands that I have yet to hear a bad song from them. Their songs each feel like they’re been carefully crafted and feel very intricate. Every album feels like they’re putting on an audio show for us. Queen II is no different just a flawless listen from front to back.

The royalty of Queen wasn’t appreciated by me back then - now is a different story 🩷

Hell yeah, first Queen album of this project. Once again, incredibly biased they've been my favourite band since I was 4 and I genuinely believe they don't have a bad album, I've listened to them all.

Worst. Album. Ever.

its fuckin queen dude

Long live Queen!! What's not to love. Queen is incredible and one of my favorite bands ever. This album is great!!! More!!

Great album good to hear some of the earlier tracks that do not seem to surface as much as some of the hits they have later on.

Amazing album

How can you not love it?

Amazing album, only 1 skip not including the procession

Amazing!

Queen is one of my favorite bands of all time. Of course I will give it 5 stars.

LOVE. QUEEN. ♥

This was perfectly metal.

Fun album, I understand why queen is so highly revered now

this was always gonna be a 5 star from me. So theatrical and camp!

Every Queen album is a five star album. I particularly enjoy the breadth and variety on display on Queen II, getting away from the more "rock opera" songs we all know from Greatest Hits I. Highlights for me include The March of The Black Queen, Seven Seas of Rhye, The Lose In The End, Father to Son and the strings-like guitar of Procession.

Having been lucky enough to see Queen live with Freddie at the helm in 1986. This album could only ever be a 5. I love the early stuff, but they had to evolve and I'm so glad they did!

It’s Queen II

As I have said before Queen are a bit of enigma to me. My ex wife loved them but I try to put this to one side as I do rate a lot of what they have done. This album is one of the least known to me so listening today was a bit of a revelation. This album is heralded as a prog rock one. Prog is my favourite genre and a flavour of music that I compare other genres with. It certainly does have prog tendencies and I do wonder how it has escaped my attention for so long. The individual musicianship and the songwriting is superb. Does not quite get up there with the all time prog classics but you tell that this is a group firing on all cylinders. Having today listened in full I can say I have a new favourite Queen album. 5/5 17/1/25

Heavy queen with some rippers. Freddy holding it down as always. Loved hearing a new range to the band as a casual listener

Great album

✔️

Masterpiece of an album, loved it. Interesting yet accessible, varied yet cohesive. One of my favourites so far.

Idk how big any of these songs r but I didn’t know them before this. I really like this

Really dramatic ambient music.

Fun fact - “Headlong” was written about Bryan May owing to how Freddie perceived the shape of his cranium.

I have no idea why I haven't listened to more Queen before. This album was great, a lot of prog rock themes going on here which I love. Reminds me of some Rush and Led Zeppelin, I'll definitely be revisiting this and pretty soon too.

Before: i’ve been meaning to get more into Queen so i’m stoked :P even if i prefer the works and sheer heart attack. SUPER COOL. loved the opening track and black queen. very rock feels like something that would play at a queer tattoo shop

Never listened to any of this album before. Was surprised that there wasn’t any major hits.

I can no longer say I've never listened to a full Queen album. This was fantastic. I am living for the harmonies; it's really cool to hear them in the context of less pop-driven songs.

This comes from a time in my life when I was not buying or listening to many albums so it passed me by. What a disaster, this is a great album and doesn't just preview what was to come but brings it now. Every track is great, all different but coming together as a whole. You can hear the typical Queen components of voice, guitar, production, multi-track voices and general "Queensness" here. I liked every track, all different with a touch of prog rock, folk rock and pop all melded in a superb package. This is deserving of one of the best albums ever.

Well good

Controversial opinion but Queen could be one of the best?

9.5/10. Queens are royalty, and so is this album!!! :) It progresses in a stunning manner. The instrumental arrangements are fantastic. The vocals are wonderful. It's an amazing album!!! :)

One of the better Queen albums.

The Boys

Great album

Always and forever

Such a complete album, really good transitions . Feels like qotsa songs for the deaf.

If you took a peek into my bright blue sticker-covered CD player on any given day in 2006, there was a good chance you’d find this spinning inside. Early on, The Loser In The End quickly became a favorite. I loved the sound, the drum intro so sticky in my brain. But I also loved the lyrics. I remember feeling that it was a serious, emotional song but not at all knowing why or what it was actually about. But the label "loser in the end" stuck with me. My sister, who is six years older (an unimaginably vast gap at the time, now meaningless) and I used to fight all the time but as sisters do it was always with our words. The winner always being the one with the bigger vocabulary (never me). Being the younger sibling, my comebacks never seemed to land quite like hers did. I decided I’d use this new phrase as a comeback in our next fight, picturing myself conceding, admitting to being the loser now but playing the long game, getting the last laugh... eventually, whatever that meant. When I finally threw it out there, my sister just looked confused and asked, "What does that even mean?". An attempt to make the joke-teller explain their joke, losing all the punch in the process. But in my mind, I’d won, because she hadn’t grasped this “profoundly deep” statement. We grew up. She went off to college, I missed her horribly for the first time ever, and we haven’t fought since, no losers in the end. Today, I realize the actual subject matter of this song and it feels even heavier and more relevant than it ever was. The ultimate commitment and investment of motherhood, perhaps the only example of unconditional love in a lifetime, etc etc etc. I could go on and on about the subject of this song. The second album on this list that makes me want to call my mom to reminisce and thank her, want to come back in my next life as her mother just to return the favor. My favorite re-listen so far, my first 5-star rating. It’s still my favorite Queen album, partly because these tracks rarely pop up in pop culture, making a full re-listen feel like the first time all over again.

Insane metal album no clue why they didn’t stay this way

It was super fun!

Great album

I LOVE QUEEN II

Classic

Freaking awesome stuff

Have on vinyl. This and Sheet Heart attack are tied for their best work for me. Bombastic, interesting and fun

Classic

Oh yes

4.5 rounded up--love queen, and a queen fantasy themed album is right up my alley

This album was my first introduction to Queen in 1974. It was powerful then as it still is today.

The hits just keep on coming this week. I loved this album a lot as a Queen fan. This was released before they became an established name in rock. Nearly all of the songs were great. That's all I have to say for now. I'll give "Self Titled II" 5 stars

Good soup

Charismatic!

One of the best of all times awesome band

After an uneven debut, Queen finally finds their voice, and it is spectacular. Prog-flavored, bombastic, glorious.

This is definitely not the Queen I know from their massive hits. And I like that.

I am blown away by this album. When you think of what a Rock concept album is trying to be and what it can accomplish, this album fits the bill. The progression of the sound and story from start to finish is amazing- it captivates your ear and makes you wonder whats coming next. The instrumentation is varied has has such a grand, unique sound. At times it evokes a baroque, regal feeling (QUEEN- get it!?) And yet at others, it is hard hitting 70s rock. And of course, Freddie Mercury's vocals are power- as are the other singers. The vocal play and harmonies are numerous and effective. Overall- I really enjoyed this one and can definitely see myself throwing it on start to finish in the future

I mean...Queen. C'mon! Who can't vibe to this. I tend to think of myself as this pop/folk/Swift-Dylan head but then I hear this and am reminded how much I just love good old rock, Brian May's guitar chops, and everything about Freddy. I was completely unfamiliar with this album and even without any of the well-known bangers it strikes me as an album everyone needs to hear.

Love early Queen, this is a masterpiece of glam-rock, fantastical songs and great guitar. I still have the LP of this.

I love Queen. They were the first band I ever fell in love with, so there will always be some bias here. That said, this is not one I have revisited as much as some of the others. “Seven Seas of Rhye” is superb. Such a brilliant song. It is dramatic, melodic and full of swagger. I have so many memories of watching Queen at Wembley on TV and this song always takes me straight back there. There may not be many of the obvious greatest hits on this record, but that does not matter. As a complete piece it is ambitious and theatrical, split between the light and dark sides, and it really shows the band’s creativity in their early years. It feels bold and imaginative, and I enjoyed it far more than I expected to. Favourite song: Seven Seas of Rhye Least favourite: Procession Album artwork: An iconic cover. One of the most recognisable images in rock history

Excellent! Have only ever heard Queen on the radio, this was great!

Upbeat and fun to listen to. Queen is the best.

QUEEN MADE QUEEN II A CONCEPTUAL ALUM ABOUT 2 QUEENS????? 10/10.

I was introduced to this album in the early 80s, which I consider fortuitous given that the entire album is a deep cut. But do what I did then… drop the needle on “Side Black” which begins with Ogre Battle. What an amazing set of fantastical songs. And every member of the band in full stride. And hey, Side White is cool too.

Solid album. Love Mercury on this one

An early masterpiece. Queen have not completely evolved yet, but with the BoRap prototype "March of the Black Queen", the glorious "White Queen" and the kind of crazy "Fairy Feller's Master Stroke", which is the soundtrack to a painting, it's all there and with "Seven Seas of Rhye" there's even a first little hit single. One of my favorite records since my childhood!

Queen don't miss. While this isn't my favorite Queen album it's still pure bangers.

Queen was the first band I seriously got into. I'd describe Queen II as one of my \"gateway albums,\" as it helped pave the way for the development of my music taste. Queen was a stepping stone that got me into hard rock and (Queen II especially) opened the door for me to get into more artsy and complex rock. Eventually I discovered the classics of progressive rock, which after over 4 years is still my most cherished genre. I do think this album is tragically let down somewhat by its less-than-ideal production quality and mixing. But I think the majority of the songwriting is really great. The guitar work on this album is super. And I've always had a fondness for the more gentle quality of Freddie's early vocals (see \"Nevermore,\" he never sounded like that on later records). I don't listen to Queen very often these days, but I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for this album. I feel obliged to give it a 5.

Solid album. Better than expected

Amazing. Got the vinyl years ago and was blown away. Ogre Battle, March of the Black Queen, all of it is great. The Brian May vocal song surprised me.

This really is a fantastic album, and for Queen to make such an album without any major hits on it is a huge display of their talent. Favorite track: Seven Seas of Rhye

Queen is Queen

Power ballads galore, there's an interesting tension between their hard rock roots and the more glam, polished sound they were moving towards. The black side/white side concept adds meaningful depth. Some lovely harmonies and creative drumming. There's a bit of this album that (tonally) doesn't seem quite sure what it wants to be, but the high points are good enough to paper over those inconsistencies. It's also clear that Freddie's still working toward his vocal peak, while May surprisingly holds his own when featured. Listened to: at home. Ultimately, it's brash, and seductive despite its minimal flaws, and the iconic cover push it to the upper echelon. Favorite tracks: Father to Son, The Loser in the End, The March of the Black Queen, Nevermore

The loser in the end stood out to me in a good way. It have en old school feel which makes great sense. Queen is just a great artist, would listen to this album again.

It's queen. It's an album that has a clear structure and songs just flow together

Amazing album, had a few experimental bits I wasn't expecting.

Obviously it is perfect

Classic Queen riffage. Gotta love Brian May’s tone

SUCH A GOOD ALBUM. Behold the wonders of fresh ears. This album flows into each other so neatly. I love it. And the musicianship is astounding.

The surprise to open 1001albumsgenerator.com and find that I'm already listening to my assigned album? (I’m on my way to my nine-hundredth play, actually.) ── ࣪˖ ࣪ ⊹ ࣪ ˖ ── I'm going to say it now, loud and clear: Queen II is Queen's best album. Although Queen II is neither as glamorous nor eclectic as its successors, the songs synchronize into one another and offers the foundation of Queen's sound. Queen II is a semi-conceptual album based loosely around the theme(s) of fantasy and love: The White Side (disc 1) offers a range of melodies — the powerful “Father To Son," the folksy “Some Day, One Day” (iirc, Brian May’s vocal debut), the stark “The Loser In The End," and more outstandingly, “White Queen (As It Began)," a powerful testament to the beauty and sting of love: “My Goddess hear my darkest fear, I speak too late — It's for evermore that I wait! Dear friend, goodbye No tears in my eyes So sad it ends, As it began” The Black Side (disc 2) is even more alluring, featuring Queen’s six-minute-long operatic masterpiece (no, I am not referring to “Bohemian Rhapsody”.) “ The March Of The Black Queen” definitely paved way for Queen’s later theatrical experimentations. The transition b/w “The March Of The Black Queen”, “Funny How Love Is” and “Seven Seas Of Rhye” is among the most beautiful things I heard. Be it "Father To Son," "White Queen" or even "Nevermore," you can distinguish Queen's later influences in Queen II. This album's rawness and imperfection is genuinely so beautiful and everything falls into place like a jigsaw.

Fab fab

It's funny. I feel like the album morphs from general 70s rock to suddenly by the end, I recognize them as Queen. The last three songs in particular I loved. March of the Black Queen, Funny How Love Is, Seven Seas of Rhye. It was all kind of blendable background noise while I did chores and then Black Queen came on and I was like *gasp QUEEN* So I loved hearing that evolution from beginning to end. Great album. Ends super strong.

Feels like a proper rock album, the instruments are amazing and freddy's voacals are absolutely marvelous. It doesn't contain any of their top known songs, but somehow it feels more rock and roll than those. I specially like "ogre battle"! "the march of the black queen" feels very much like a rock orchestra (this is meant as a compliment), similar to "bohemian rhapsody" in the fluctuations of sounds and instruments. Added all of the songs to my liked songs.

Absolutely phenomenal record. As close as Queen came to a metal album. Favourite songs: Seven Seas of Rhye, The Loser in the End Least favourite songs: none.... Perfection on vinyl 5/5

I had somehow never heard any of the songs on this album before, but I love it. It’s them as a badass rock band before their more artistic operatic excesses and anthemic exclamations. I dig the fantasy elements on the black side too.

Surprised i never listened to this before...

Anthemic, stadium rock, masterpiece!

A perfect album.

Now we're talking - classic album. It's got it all: Production values, variety of styles, dynamics, great musicianship, good lyrics, varied instrumentation: sitar, gong, clever arrangements, palindromic intros. Hair. There's so much here, I challenge anyone to say they can't say \"I like this bit\" to something. I also challenge you not to have learned some vocabulary after listening to the Fairy Feller's Master Stroke. Even filler tracks like some day one day are so well arranged, I like them. I had this and Sheer Heart Attack on both sides of a TDK D90 and played it often on my headphones at college. Roger Taylor songs are so weird. But again, I can't help but like them.

It's Queen

It may not have any of the atomic bomb tracks that Queen is known for but this is probably my favorite Queen album. It shows the clear transition from hard rock to full-on rock opera all within the course of a single album. And every track is so good. Every. Track. Loved every moment of it. Full marks

Even though this is before they were "famous", it's a fantastic album

Amazing

First time hearing this album. Loved it!

The whole 'good versus evil' album has been done by many. But few could do it as well or with as much excitement as this band. This is the album where Queen really became Queen, with more complicated structures, multi-layered songs, and heavy use of overdubs. The various talents of the band are on full display here, particularly the progressive rock stylings of Brian May and the louder than life vocals of Freddie Mercury. What's striking is how little known this album is. It speaks to Queen's ability to create both iconic and instantly recognizable singles elsewhere, as well as perfectly crafted albums like this one. 'Queen II' is heavy, detailed, and utterly fantastical.

5/5. This is a bias pick for sure, objectively some silly and naïve songwriting but gosh darn does this go hard. It got through me through my teenage years (no wonder it was so hard to make friends lol). The dual sided structure with light and dark, love the exploration of that concept. Although the love song stands out on side 2, it's overall a great front to back, great vocals and instrumentation, as always from Queen. Give it a listen for the nerdiness alone or for the great music as a bonus!

Hadn't heard this album before but it's really good. Fun to listen to.

Not so well known album of Queen, but with outstanding quality. I think it is one of the best Queen - records

Great album! Queen knew how to write interesting and playful music.

DISCAZO

I mean, what can I say? It's Queen. In the 5 weeks it's been since I listened to Sheer Heart Attack, my opinion of Queen has not changed much. They're still one of my favorite bands, and Queen II adds further reinforcing to that. This is an interesting album to include on the list, as it serves as a good representation of what early Queen was like before they started to lean more into the stadium appeal of songs like "We Will Rock You" and "Don't Stop Me Now". As great as those songs are, I actually really like the sound that albums like this and Sheer Heart Attack are going for. Everything I said about that album remains true here. The instrumental work is still amazing. Freddie Mercury was one of the greatest singers of all time even in 1974. The transitions on this thing are unlike any other. One thing that makes this album stand out is just how fantastical it is, particularly in the second half. Songs like "Ogre Battle" and "Seven Seas of Rhye" just have this whimsical and magical feel to them that makes them such great listens. Another standout track is "The March of the Black Queen", which almost acts a sort of precursor to "Bohemian Rhapsody" in that they both feature very distinct sections across a fairly long run-time. The first half is good too, just not as good as the second half. Overall, this album is great and Queen is still one of my favorite bands ever. 5/5.

This is the kind of album I was hoping to get more of in this list. An album I had never listened to before but it’s a great album

5 Big Stars. Always enjoyed Queen but never listened to much of their music. Really enjoyed this album.

BL: An album I grew up with. Though never really ever intentionally listening to it in it's full until the past year or so. The production on this album is absolutely stellar, and solidifies Brian May as one of the best guitarists of all time. Will be a pleasure to relisten AL: Just as good as I remember, if not better. The harmonics, the guitar, the backing vocals, just total perfection the whole way through. I think post "News of the World" Queen experienced a decline for me personally. This is still my favourite album by a long way FT: "Procession", "Father to Son", "White Queen", "The Loser In The End", "Seven Seas of Rhye" 5/5

Banger, enough said

❤️Queen

Love it

Awesome album. Queen was such a talented and entertaining band and they show it off on this album. One of their best!

Just a truly sublime album. Ive always slightly preferred the two albums flanking this: Queen and Sheer Heart Attack since the latter is when they really became QUEEN and the former has all the energy and hunger to prove themselves of a debut album. It was nice to take the time with this album this time and fully recognize just how strong the back half is in its fairytale psuedo-concept album. Also, this quote: The band included the comment "and nobody played synthesiser... again" on the album sleeve, a purist principle of May's, as some listeners had mistaken their elaborate multi-tracking and effects, produced by guitar and vocals, as synthesisers.

I actually wasn’t familiar with any of these songs. But it’s great, I love Queen they are a classic.
