Reviews (page 13 of 13)

The essence of excess. Things weren't going to go any better later.

Har aldrig tyckt om Queen men dethär var bättre än jag trodde det skulle vara men kommer antagligen aldrig lyssna på de igen

Fuck ooofffff

Bit more balls to this one than some of the other Queen records on this list. Still not terribly exciting though.

Queen never really seems like a real band to me. They seem like a musical caricaturized version of a band. Like if there was a musical that did an over the top opera of a rock band, this is what they would end up with. A couple of the songs were alright. The Loser in the End was pretty good. Most I hated, partly just because they do that thing where all of the vocals sing and hold a long high note together, and they do it so often. The Fairy Feller’s Master Stroke is just ridiculous. I would maybe give them 2.5 if I could.

not great

Bro i know this one hahaha - pretty good but so many better Queen Albums Even debut album is better - why is this one on the list??? If they got so many Queen albums already like let some other artists on here?? Seven Seas of Rhye is a banger tho

queen always been relatively mid to me. They’re ok. There’s a few highlights on here (Father to Son, The March of the Black Queen) but this album is just queen as theyve always come. At least in my perception. It’s like really safe 70s rock. Freddie Mercury a legend but this album was just ok to me

Not the best Queen album. I much more prefer the later work. 2.5/5

A bit overly ornate and proggy

It’s like if Queen played a whole bunch of Led Zeppelin covers, and you’d never heard of those Led Zeppelin songs. Interesting but definitely not amazing.

Seven Seas of Rhye is classic Queen. Otherwise, the rock opera elements didn’t quite gel.

A lot of Queen I don’t know. It’s okay.

I like queen’s singles. But I just can’t get through a whole album

p321. 1974. 3 stars. Vaguely pretentious glam/pomp rock that outstays its welcome and frequently strays into early 70's rock wankage. Well done though, and Brian May seems quite a good guitarist. Other than Seven Seas of Rye, it's missing standout tunes. Not sure it's essential listening.

Queen II is a real mixed bag of songs, and none of which really make me want to return to this. Queen in general is a band I like in doses rather than as an album experience, as even their most popular albums don't land with me. I'm more a fan of what they would do on Innuendo.

Not the best queen album

It's fun when Freddy pops off. Good production, good guitar tone. But pretty boring.

Seven seas of rhye is the only tune on this.

Moins intéressant que le premier. Rien de bien marquant sur cet album. Pas mauvais, mais plutôt fade en fait.

Ei kokonaisuutena yllä Queen-hittimittakaavoihin lähellekään

No one in their right mind would rate old school Queen better than new school Queen.

It’s just not very good is it?

Overly dramatic dreck, combining the worst instincts and excesses of the glam and prog rock traditions. Has a few moments of interest, but mostly goes – and stays – off the rails. Distinctive guitar sounds and over-the-top theatricality that would be tamed/harnessed to better effect in the future, but this is just too much, much too much. No more than 2.25 stars.

Never got the hype

Just not my thing at all.

They’re still searching on this album. Too many fantasy songs with the Brian May guitar and vocal harmonies being played with. Not close to their best. Why put this album over most of their catalog which is much better?

Fancy some cliché 70s rock? Want songs about annoying girls and orges? Then this is the album for you. This does nothing to sway me from the idea that Queen are massively overrated. Probably great of you were at Doncaster in the 70s while drinking shit cider, however doing the same thing now just doesn't work. Best Tracks: Father and Son; The White Queen (As it Began) ; Seven Seas of Rhye

Not sure I have heard any of these Queen songs before. Its more prog rock than I was expecting and personally it didn't resonante with me.

"Seven Seas of Rhye" was the single that introduced me to Queen in 1974. I never really got into this album - but their next three all really impressed me. And coming back to the album for the first time in decades, my opinion hasn't changed. I can see why some people might like it, but it's really not for me.

Maybe it’s just that I didn’t recognise any of the songs. I just felt that it’s all very Queen-y but not as good as their more popular tracks. I heard nothing different here. Hey, it’s all good fun but on this occasion I was left pretty cold.

I don’t think Queen figuring out their sound really qualifies for a list like this, but I did have a not-unpleasant time with it. They’re just so irresistibly bombastic!

bit too muso for me with the usual queen bluster.

Q:. What if Queen made a Led Zeppelin album? A: It would suck.

Queen are just not my thing at all & this is the first album of theirs I’ve listened to. Their sound is a strange combination of pompous and wacky, two qualities that do not often sit side by side. I was not expecting the incredibly nerdy lyrics here and am undecided as to whether that endears me to this record more or less. Two stars for being objectively interesting, in a detached kind of way.

2.5 - like Queen when they're a straight-up heavy rock band but not so keen on the prog excesses

On their second album you can already get an impression of the things that will make Queen of of the greatest rock bands later on. This album is not nearly on the level they will achieve years later.

Kvalitetna muzika norm legende al nije nesto sto bih ja slusala

I have Queen favorites. These are not it.

This was ... weird? I thought I knew Queen's work fairly well, but the only track I recognized was seven seas of rhye. It felt like an oddly metal alice in wonderland.

I mostly couldn't be bothered. Didn't have any of the hits. At least have the hits! Deaddie Mercury.

I don't like the constant changes of pace, especially on tracks like White Queen/March of the Black Queen. It's like listening to a musical. The transition of power chords smashing into piano ballady stuff topped up with heavily over-dubbed choir-like vocals into a folky sing-along song like Funny How Love (without a space in between) is schitzoprenic & over-indulgent. Any middle-of-the-pack prog band from 1974 would have handled those transitions with more grace. Their release from later that year, Sheer Heart Attack I’m a big fan of. Not this.

Never heard a single song off this album before. And surprisingly low fidelity?

I started the album thinking, "Why have I never heard any of these songs?". Well, now I know why....

Not the biggest fan of Queen even at their poppiest, and this is....less good than that.

Disjointed and incoherent collection of tuneless songs

Dreadful. Self indulgent toss

Bombastic, overproduced, and multi tracked to death. You can literally hear the recording studio here, but Queen were never a less is more band right. Is it prog, is it metal? Is there such thing as prog metal?! It's a lot whatever it is. This is music with all the bells and whistles... and buttons and tassels and sequins too. I mean can you ever have enough gongs in rock music?! The medieval nonsense that Led Zeppelin (just about) got away with, sounds full on Spinal Tap when Queen do it here on White Queen and Ogre Battle (haha). Just as a side bar, why the fuck would you let Brian May sing lead ever, when you had Freddie Mercury in your band! I think I'm going to stick to my greatest hits.

I’m infamously not a Queen fan and I hoped this exercise would be changing my mind but so far it’s just confirming my already held opinions. This was tough to get through. Particularly ‘Ogre Battle’. - my god.

Queen made some amazing music, too bad none of it was on this album!

A band that do absolutely nothing for me

No. I may of listened to this album when i was 15 but it’s literally so forgettable i don’t remember. tried liking queen but they literally suck

truly just one of the worst bands to ever do it. no idea what anyone over the age of 12 sees in this gauche, tasteless bullshit

Not for me

Not listening to this fucking shit

snooze

Life is too short for how many queen albums I've been made to listen to

The world's most overrated band, diddly day oh

Nope. I didn’t like this Queen album either.

An absolute embarrassment of an album. I have no idea who this is even for, outside of maybe the most nerdy of Tolkein fans. Queen was always a singles band, and even then their singles weren't ever that great, but to hear a whole album of guitar wailing and songs that go nowhere, all the while Freddie Mercury belts out about ogre battles and queens is enough to make me want to kill myself. God awful.

Not my thing

not for me 0 added

I do not like Queen at all and this album helped confirm that.

Queen's second album is full of power chords, grandiose pianos and over-the-top vocals but is ultimately about as rock and roll as a Gilbert and Sullivan musical. On top of that, dude's singing about ogres and fairies, so thanks but no.

11 songs that I’d never listened to before. 11 songs that I never want to listen to again. I simply do not get Queen, is this good? It’s feverish at points. 1/5 Best Song: the last one

I don't know what it was, but I really didn't enjoy it at all. I expected so much better from them, I don't know what happened here. I don't have the heart to give it 1 star cause they're obviously very talented musicians but I really didn't like anything about it at all. Actually I might give this 1 star cause I really wanted to turn it off for most of the album.

I think the most valuable lesson this challenge has taught me is that I simply need to avoid anything labeled "progressive" much the same way I've learned to avoid anything labeled "organic" at the supermarket. Truly. Anything on the white side that might have saved this album from failure (e.g. Roger Taylor's contribution) was more than wiped out by that egregious black side.

Nei takk

Totally unlistenable

I'm a certified Queen hater so this probably comes as no surprise but I found this album boring and stale. It's not the worst thing, I didn't actively want to get it over with really but I just don't enjoy how Queen puts songs together. They hit the middle point of not being very heavy but not being folky enough that just grinds at me.

Terrible. Just terrible

A theatrical fever dream where Brian May leads a torturous fantasy LARP.

god this band is terrible

Worst band ever

What the nice kids thought was edgy - but meanwhile, in the garage…..

I know Queens big hits but I never listened to any of their albums when I was younger. This album for me was terrible. Respect their influence and appreciate what they left behind but I would not listen to this album again in my lifetime.

Went into this thinking Queen are shit - change my mind. It didn’t. There is variation here and lots going on. Some glam rock and then Led Zep like (or lite) vocals in The Loser in the End. But, a high degree of bombastic, pompous, OTT everything runs through it and those layered vocals aren’t for me (when it’s Queen). Fables, fairies, crows and ogres don’t do it for me lyrically. The March of the Black Queen - Started to think I like it then checked myself and rightly concluded it was rubbish. Just don’t get them.

That's theatrical to the point of exhaustion - a swirl of fantasy lyrics, layered vocals, and guitar heroics that never quite land. It’s ambitious, sure, but it drowns in its own excess, feeling more like a costume rehearsal than a real performance. There’s talent all over it, just not much direction or soul. Big ideas, small payoff.

There worst album by far!!!!

Nothing interesting here.

awful band

I am a sucker for rock opera but I absolutely hate rock where the singer is trying to sing opera. This albums is absolute dogshit, except for a couple of songs where other people sing.

BORING. All the songs sounded identical and there are way too many guitar solos.

Today’s album is more prog rock fantasy than rock opera fantasy - I don’t enjoy either. All that talk of misty castles and ogres really brings me down. Low 2 from me because of the commitment to the fantasy aesthetic.

Queen sucks

Was not a fan.

Ai tämä oli NÄIN hupsua? "Ogre Battle", "The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke". Viikset ja tennarit oli hyvä muutos.

1 decent track

Seven Seas of Rhye The March of the Black Queen

I truly dislike this band

Haven't heard this one before but it's rubbish

I hate queen

Did not really enjoy this as much as I was hoping. Some guitar sounds like Sabbath inspired stuff but not as good. I get what they're doing and how it was progressive, but none of it really connected or came together for me. Despite hearing so many elements of Bohemian Rhapsody, none of it is Bohemian Rhapsody. Yes, of course Queen had so much other stuff that's great, but c'mon, that's what the damn biopic was called...

1. procezzion - 1.5 2. father - 1.5 3. queen - 1.5 4. day - 0 5. lozer - 0 6. ogre - 1 7. fairy - 1.5 8. nevermore - 1.5 9. march - 1.5 10. love - 1 11. zeaz - 1

Tried so hard with this one. Yes, the building blocks are there for soaring harmonic vocals, guitar acrobatics and glorious camp drama. But they are still flat packed and their dad hasn’t quite figured out how to put them together yet. The last few tracks are recognisably Queen, but getting there takes the patience of several saints.

Was this the Rock opera Spinal tap said they were going to make?

This band is severely overrated.

Well produced and performed songs that don't make me feel anything; that's how I feel about most of the music by Queen. Freddie was so good at singing that it feels like he had built-in autotune, which in my opinion makes his voice boring and lacking in character. I know, a blasphemous thing to say. Many people think that for example Dylan can't sing, but I would much rather listen to a gritty and humanly imperfect voice like that, rather than the heavenly and flawless singing of Freddie Mercury. So basically, Queen is too good for their own good. I'm also not into the dramaticism, which is weird since my favorite artist is Bowie, who is not a stranger to theatrics. Something about Queen's lyrics and sound makes them really corny and tacky to my ears. It's really hard for me to sit through a full album by them.

Never liked them. freddie mercury is overrated.

Jeez Queen what the queening-hell is this Queeeen?

Lots of Led Zeppelin sounding stuff in here. Also I can hear the Beatles. That being said Im not a fan of this rock opera style.

I hated this. It actually irritated me and made me angry.

Awful prog rock monstrosity. So different to their later pop/rock work.

Not a super exciting Queen album. Probably never listen to this one again..

Boring

One review says "Queen hits hard as a rock band here, where even the blasts of vocal harmonies feel like power chords, no matter how florid they are." No. Those blasts seem out-of-place and get irritating fast

Any band who is renowned for having incredible ‘greatest hits’ albums - especially plural greatest hits albums generally have terrible albums. Queen should have just stuck with their first 2 greatest hits albums and night at the opera. Apart from that who cares? Had to listen to 35 minutes of guff before getting to a bonefide banger ‘seven seas of Ryne’ 1.3

Boring, from start to finish. The loose theme of emotional "side A" songs and fantasy "side B" material makes no sense, the guitar work is (to my ears) generic and presages Metallica and the like, all of whom are emotionally vacuous and musically grinding. Queen made wonderful songs throughout their careers and none of them are here.

Didn’t like anything really. I like Other Queen stuff but meh

One and done. Nah, not ruining my Christmas with this.

Is this even Queen?

not a hit on the album

Love classic queen but couldn’t get into some of these tracks

Led Zeppelin knock-off. The album probably tells a whole story that I'm not interested in.

I like Queen, but not this album

Cool guitar sounds and some hard-hitting riffs. The vocals are delivered powerfully, with a commanding range - but they're somehow impersonal and technical, compared to the more anthemic stuff Freddie Mercury would sing later. Very hard to take this seriously in a post-Spinal Tap universe. The fantasy-infatuated 70s rock always makes for pretty bad bootleg-Tolkein lyrics about mystical lands of Ogres, Fairies, Queens. Don't Care! The operatic prog aspects of this make for some disjointed over-stuffed songs; just get out of your own way and let Brian May rip in 3-part harmony.

Skipped through most of the tracks then gave up. Can't do overblown fantasy songs with that much guitar everywhere. Especially not this early in the morning. Pop music this is not. Not for me.

Refused to listen.

Seven sees of Rhye slaps, only hot space sucks more as an album.

I don’t think queen have ever done a good album. Last morning in Florence, travel to Mikki’s today. Met Lisa last night, she was a great laugh:) 15th March

I understand why this one isn’t talked about as much as the others. Sounds like it’s a soundtrack for a play, which is actually very on brand for Queen. Not for me. Seven Seas of Rhye kinda goes.

I listened to all of this record. This is an important album in the history of popular music as it is this stuff that hastened the emergence of punk rock. Perhaps this process should be renamed 1001 Albums That Will Hasten Your Demise. Stephen Stills is suddenly looking good.

Worst Album Ever ! Hate it

This album felt like 1 long song that didn’t end. I ended up liking one song, but everything else felt like a drawn out blur. I won’t deny the talent of the band, but it’s definitely not for me. 1/5

Never heard this album before, but knew Queen from their stadium anthems and obviously Bohemian Rhapsody, which I always thought was a kind of tongue in cheek novelty type of song. Well this album is like one big Bohemian Rhapsody, only less polished, less proficient, less fun, less in every way. Since Night at the Opera is already on the list, including this album as well is redundant. My rating reflects that redundancy, not necessarily the quality of the music (which if it did, I'm not sure would change much).

Traaaaaaaash

Bit of a Queen noob; but nothing stood out to me on this album. Felt very mediocre, still developing their discography I suppose. Would not recommend to others.

Really bad. 70's rock opera BS. I realize this is early in their evolution, but, to me, almost unlistenable.

boring

This really hasn't aged well; I must hunt my copy out and sell it!

Rubbish

I find Queen basically unlistenable. Any of it really.

listened all the way through was a chore horrible mixing even in lossless. Ruined the whole experience could give less of a shit ab anything else tbh. 1/10

The dairy feller's master-stroke

Srsly? Must I listen to this garbage? It’s just awful. Self indulgent. What are they trying to say? Is it a mood? I just don’t get it.

Every song was a yawner, except for maybe 10 seconds from the end of The March of the Black Queen, when Brian May hits it with a power solo.

I just can't be arsed

No thank you.

Probably a classic
