Reviews (page 4 of 13)
It’s probably the less Queen album from Queen. I liked it. White Queen is amazing.
Favorite songs: Procession, Father to Son, White Queen (As It Begins), Nevermore, Seven Seas of Rhye
Why haven't I heard this album? Has the typical Freddy style, but man, does Brian go hard on some of these songs. You can really hear that early British, Beatles style rock, but with moments of their now very popular singles that they are known for peeking through. Overall really solid album. With their popular later albums, I find that I like 2-3 songs and don't care for the rest, but this was pretty solid all the way through.
4/5. Excellent album, a real treat, and a reminder on why I am going through 30m — 120m of quasi-random album listening every weekday. If you enjoy prog rock, this album is a must. It's fun, exciting, and technically masterful, all the best parts of the genre. I wasn't familiar with Queen's non-hits, and goddamn, I wish I knew about this album sooner. May and Mercury are obvious callouts, and I have to focus on them. They're on point throughout the entirety of the album. May is one of the finest guitarists of his generation, both in terms of technical skill and creativity, and he's absolutely killing it here. Mercury's iconic vocals, overdubbed here in true Queen fashion, are fantastic.
Not my first choice of Queen albums, but it’s still quite an enjoyable listen. Seven Seas Of Rhye is the clear standout.
No real radio hits or songs I really knew, but I dug it.
이거 이미 아는거라고!!!!
Progressive rock of the 70s. Heavy metal, glam, and art rock, it's all there.
Gostando mais do que esperava de um dos álbuns menos conhecidos do Queen. Achei o mix estranhamente abafado, provavelmente o novo remaster que vem esse ano melhore as coisas?
LOVE queen
"I reign with my left hand, I rule with my right, I'm Lord of all Darkness, I'm Queen of the Night!" "I'll be a bad boy, I'll be your bad boy, I'll do the March of the Black Queen!" Yaaaaaaaassssssss slay Freddie 💅👑💅👑💅
An excellent album flexing through full rock elements, theatrical presentation, imaginative lyrics, and an amazing vocal range. Although I think a Night at the Opera is perhaps my favorite, this album certainly shines as well.
8/10 Early Queen is an interesting beast. They were yet to find their way to mainstream success and were still digging their way through various inspirations to find their own sound. In truth, Queen did experiment a lot through their career, which does go some way to explaining the sometimes uneven nature of many of their albums. That being said, this album really does feel like a coherent piece. It would be easy to miss the depth and range of this record if it were just chucked on as a background listen, but there are so many ideas put together here that it really does deserve a closer listen. And the more I listened to this, the further it sucked me in. This is not the Queen of Don’t Stop Me Now, Somebody To Love or Killer Queen, although there are indications all over the place that that kind of stuff is ready to present itself, but this is a band throwing so many ideas together in a roiling, frothing storm of heavy prog music. The thing that stood out to me the most here was how heavy it was. Not the whole time, but when they wanted to, the band really lent into a beefy, hard sound more reminiscent of Led Zeppelin than what Queen would become. Freddie doesn’t really reach the levels of grandiosity that he would on later records, but his vocal is so controlled and dynamic, and his songwriting on the second side shows a man really starting to flex his creative muscles. There was great dynamic range across this album, with elements of stark beauty, lush, full harmonic movements and balls to the wall thundering cacophonies, often inside a single track. Some of the production was really fantastic and full sounding, and you could hear them experimenting quite heavily with layering, panning and other techniques to build a really interesting sound. It was a little rough around the edges in places, particularly on Brian May’s first side, and there wasn’t as much range to Freddie’s vocal as I’d have liked, but as a whole, this was a really enjoyable album and I think it’s a bit of a shame that Queen lost as much of this sound as they did on future releases. Procession - There’s that Brian May guitar tone. It’s unmistakably Queen as soon as that sound comes out of the speakers. This is a bit of a ponderous intro that seems to be aiming towards grand, but never really gets there, but it’s leading up to… Father To Son - The intro to this is great. That spacey arpeggiated keyboard against the heavy chords from the guitar and bass is really nice. I was expecting it to lift off into something heavier straight away, but it builds and teases that more slowly. It’s pretty proggy too in the number of different phases it runs through. It reaches that heaver sound a couple of minutes in and there are some solid riffs in amongst the clash of dirty noise. It’s a good little number this and it has the feel of a track that probably gets better with familiarity. White Queen (As It Began) - Freddie’s voice hasn’t exploded into action yet, but his delivery is so deft and emotive. The choral backing vocals are great and back him up really well. This is pretty heavy in places too, but has excellent dynamic range between the verses and choruses. There are moments of that classic Queen sound, but there’s further range and variety in there too. A really good track. Some Day One Day - This runs nicely off the previous track and it’s a bit more restrained. Again, it’s quite proggy, but we don’t get as much heavy stuff, but the layering of the different parts creates a really pretty tonal bed that sits under Brian May’s vocal. This is a drifting, evolving little track that’s a really pleasant listen with lots of rhythmic and tonal interest. The Loser In The End - Ooof, that’s a weighty start off the back of the last track. This is quite Zeppelin bluesy and we get Roger Taylor on vocals now. Some of these riffs are really top notch and Brian May’s solo work is delicious, especially with that much grit over his characteristic guitar tone. Theres’s some interesting layering of different rhythms here that give the track so much life and movement. Ogre Battle - What a brilliant intro. Quality sound design into that high vocal and then a pulsing, throbbing blend of forwards and backwards playback layered together. This is really heavy and punchy, but also slips in these little legato moments that add really nice little twists here and there. Again, this is so proggy and it very occasionally dips into hooky moments, but they’re fleeting and this is all about the journey. And then all of a sudden, it’s over. Solid stuff. The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke - They’re just throwing ideas at the ear again and again and I’m here for it. This jumps between phrases with different rhythmic emphases, but it’s all so frantic and compelling. It’s pretty wacky, but I’m finding it pulling me along and not letting go. It’s really heavy in places, really grand and pretty in others, and it does so, so much in under 3 minutes before rolling straight on into… Nevermore - This is so pretty and signposts us pretty much directly to the kind of thing that Mercury would develop into Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s stark in places, full of tone in others and it’s so dramatic, both tonally and with the pull and push of the tempo. Really lovely stuff. The March Of The Black Queen - Again, this is a track that shifts, modulates and develops as it goes. There’s drama, some really heavy, rolling drums, vocal harmonies, guitar solos, and so many interesting pieces of composition and production, particularly around the vocals, which fire at you from all directions. There is so much range across this one track that it’s kind of hard to sum it up, because it’s like they’ve written about 6 songs and blended them together, but it manages to still remain coherent and compelling, which is a fantastic achievement. What a psychotically brilliant piece of music. Funny How Love Is - I can’t get a breath, the second side of this record is relentless. This is more of a straightforward composition, but the production is bloody massive. It sounds so good. The vocal layering is top quality It doesn’t offer a vast amount of range, but it has this constant climbing sensation that drives it forward and it’s so well delivered that it doesn’t need to do any more, especially clocking in at under three minutes. Seven Seas Of Rhye - That pulsing, driving beat against Brian May’s wailing guitar is über-Queen, but everything around it is way heavier and grittier than their more poppy work that would follow. It’s another incredibly compelling and driven piece of work. There are some solid riffs in there too, as well as some really nice rhythmic choices. And then a very Queen choice to roll out into I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside. A suitably weird ending.
Very good very nice
Interesting album... I liked it! You can definitely hear the precursor to later albums like a night at the opera.
Although it may not have the hits that Queen is known for, I think Queen II is their most interesting album, musically. There's a lot of interesting and complex instrumental work on this album, and Freddie's vocals sound fantastic on it. 4/5
Love me some Queen, but the album all at once is a lot. It’s so chaotic. Liked the Ogre song at first but eventually it’s like what’s happening? I liked Fairy Feller and Nevermore and the back half of the album more.
It’s crazy how experimental and prog this album was compared to a lot of their other more popular tracks (Bohemian Rhapsody aside). I enjoy it, not my favorite Queen album but it’s a fun listen.
The game was my first cassette… I liked this one
Way better than the last queen album. I didnt hate a single song on here. Saved: Father To Son, White Queen, Nevermore
i love queen
First album I listened to twice to be sure it couldn't be a 5. I just really liked it a lot. 4.5
Listened previously. Expectations: High - Verdict: Great - Queen showing why they are one of the best heavy metal bands of all time despite people mostly thinking of them as a pop group.
Always surprised at the quality of their back catalogue
epic
Very good early hard rock/prog album with a number of cuts I will revisit. Love Queen.
Maksimaalinen miltei mutta ei ihan naurettavuuteen asti. Pakko arvostaa tätä häpeilemätöntä menoa!
Not the strongest album but still worth a listen
This album rocks! I didn't know a single song. Albums like this are what makes this whole exercise worthwhile. I'll revisit this one for sure.
Um ótimo álbum,e a primeira vez que eu escuto um álbum completo do queen e não me decepcionei.devo dizer também que a guitarra aqui está incrível!
one of my fave bands growing up & the only song i knew was seven seas of rhye smh,,, this one is so dramatic i love her
Pretty good but a forgettable album for me
Prog but make it whimsical
Oerhört jämn skiva. Bara bra musik. Ett riktigt album. Men dåligt med bangers. Stark fyra
Has all the wonderful grand and glorious Queen qualities that you'd expect and some somber Some Day One Day to spare.
I like this one. However, there are 4-5 tracks that are clearly a step weaker then the rest. I think queen mitigates this on other albums 4.4 /5
Ah, Queen 2. Say, that cover is pretty cool, they should use it in a music video. Awful joke aside, Queen 2 is a step up from Queen 1 and Queen 1 is certainly not a bad album. Stepping away from the fantasy age rock ideas presented on then first album somewhat (but not entirely) and starting to play with the things that they'd truly be known for, this album is very important to Queens sound. While I don't quite think this is the album where you think "oh yeah this is the Queen I know" you get bits and pieces of familiarity that makes sense in their history but beyond that this album is still very much a good album and has survived the test of time pretty well. Not as well as every Queen album or even every rock album from the mid 70s but definitely better than some other Queen albums. I'm not quite the prog obsessed pretentious kid I once was but I know that kid would've loved this album had he not thought Queen were overrated (I no longer think that). Certainly, if you like prog, if you like rock and certainly if you like you like Queen but you've never heard this album, do it. If you can and you care enough I'd listen to Queen in order so you can truly hear them grow because this album and what it builds to is truly impressive. The album after this one is for me the "Oh yeah this is Queen" album but we will talk about that one another day. Best songs: Nevermore/ Seven Seas of Rhye Worst songs: N/A Rank compared to everything else so far: 20/55 (below Nevermind the Bollocks, above Low-Life.)
The production on this record is so impressive, every song is masterfully layered with great guitar and vocal work. It's a little theatrical for my taste though. Standout Tracks: White Queen (As It Began), Ogre Battle, The March of the Black Queen
I had no idea what to expect from a queen album with none of the big hits, but I was positively surprised. Favorite song: The march of the black queen
What's not to like? Well, the riffing while ok is not the best, lead singing by the others is inferior and unnecessary, the prog elements are lukewarm, the sound is unrefined, but we now know something unique will soon emerge out of these elements.
For being in the top 1001 it’s surprising that none of the songs on this album would be in Queens Greatest Hits. Still sonically true to the band and an album meant to be listened to in sequence.
Really good Queen album. You see them getting into their patented style especially later on the album on songs like "Ogre Battle" and "The March of the Black Queen". The album also dives into Progressive Rock and Hard Rock, showing really how good of a band Queen is. I especially like the more pop-oriented songs like "Some Day One Day", which sounds a bit like Badfinger. 4/5- 2nd favorite Queen album at the moment, even without a real hit song.
I did not know any early Queen songs. I like this heavier at times, prog rock, art rock, whatever you want to call it. It's like the precursor to everything I know musically about Queen, I can see the origins. I like the fantasy lyrics, the diversity of sounds. Not my favourite, but fun to explore, and will likely come back to it
hell yeah
Like others, I’m shocked at how unfamiliar I am with this album. But I loved it and prefer it to their more well known work.
I am quite consistently pleasantly surprised by Queen, a very well known band that I enjoy for plenty of mega hits, but I did not expect to like their albums as much as I did. This one has little fluff and truly a vision, the harmonies are interesting, it is jelling all superbly between styles and voices. I get it really, it is a collage of hundred influences and I think it really works
That was fun
Baroque
All have very seamless transitions which I like. You can also tell they were experimenting with sounds and instruments which is really fun. I liked The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke, The March Of The Black Queen, and Seven Seas Of Rhye. Another very intentional album listening experience, was a great time throughout although might be considered too tied together. I probably wouldn't listen to any of these songs on their own but would def listen to the album again. There wasn't anything I didn't like either. Fav song: either Ogre Battle or March of the Black Queen. 4 stars for me
Very cool, I liked it more than the other Queen album I listened to in this project, prolly helps none of the massive hits were here so this felt fresh. I liked Ogre Battle best
Knew none of the songs going in. Pleasantly surprised by how consistently good their sound is, a unique blend of almost grungy tone and lilting melodies, unique structure, and just a joy to hear. What kiss wishes they were.
Classic album. Love Queen seven seas is one of my favourite songs.
First Queen album for me on this list! One of my favourite bands of all time, but i have to say this is not among my favourites, still a superb album, perhaps their proggiest. I love seven seas and the march of the Black Queen. Probably solid 4 stars.
It's Queen! A lot rockier than I expected and super enjoyable.
Might have to come back to it as I enjoyed it as GET UP AND ON WITH UR DAY ROCK MIX. you know? But you can never go wrong with Queen.
Not peak queen, but still a strong glam/prog rock album that displays some of their roots. This is not the queen we all know and love, but it's still good! Not much in the way of stand-out tracks aside from "Seven Seas of Rhye" but it's consistently solid throughout. Worthy of a 4.
much better than i expected, never really liked queen but this album was very enjoyable
The medley is cool
I haven't listened to Queen outside of the hits, so this album was new to me. I didn't know what to expect. How could Queen have an album where not even 1 song is a massive hit you hear everywhere? I still don't know the answer to that question, but, this album has songs that rip. Favorite tracks: Father to Son Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen
Classic
I love how you can hear the foundation for what they would become with this album.
They were incredible and a major piece of rock music history. I still don't enjoy their music.
Forgot how fun it is to listen to Queen
A great album. First listen just made me appreciate more how Queen crafted the sound they did.
168/1089 dare i say a better album than A Night At The Opera?? I still liked it but that album suffered from Bohemian Rhapsody so much of a hit that the other tracks couldn’t hold up and felt filler-ish. This one feels focused, intentional and consistent with its tracklisting i saved 7/11 (all except procession, White Queen, Funny How Love Is and Nevermore) faves: Fairy Feller…, Ogre Battle, Father and Son, Some Day One Day 74/100
Wer Queen nicht kennt, dem ist nicht zu helfen.
love the instrumentals
Queen is one of them most misrepresented bands in all of rock history from a modern perspective shaped by Greatest Hits comps and constant radio play of their singles. The tone of Queen is unmistakable. What people miss is how unabashedly nerdy a majority of their music is. One of the best songs on the album is about how Mom’s should be cooler and not losers. Half the songs are fantasy stories that Led Zeppelin would find indulgent. I wouldn’t consider this a favorite album at all, but I like how it’s undeniably Queen with awesome harmonies, intricate song structures, heavy driving tough-as-nails music, but weirder songs that I haven’t heard a million times. It’s perfect for when I’m in the mood for some 70s heavy glam.
very unique and energetic sound
A phenomal piece, but The Black Queen is where it falters. It's missing something to make it perfect. It's close though
Best friend was good til he started to moan at the end. Sweet lady was good I really liked the guitar and drums. Seaside rendezvous was silly. Bohemian Rhapsody is phenomenal as always
Forgot how good this album is. Much more consistent than sheer heart attack, but other than a couple tracks it's not quite on the same level as some of the stuff from night at the opera or innuendo. March of the black queen is a 10 though on par with bohemian rhapsody
Probably the best Queen album imo. Really flows nicely and is never uninteresting
Wasn’t a huge fan at the start but really picked up after that with some bangers
One of my favourite Queen albums. Full of fantasy allusions a big noise.
Really good album, not my favourite of theirs but still thoroughly enjoyed.
On the one hand, it's not the strongest album. On the other, it's fucking Queen singing about a fucking OGRE BATTLE
Before listening: Wait, a Queen album with a bunch of songs that I've never heard of before? Guess Queen became more famous after this album, but I kinda assume most Queen songs were equally famous. Also I'm gonna assume this is where Quest got the name Ogre Battle from, lemme just double-check - yep sure did, lol. After listening: Yeah, this was heavier than I expected from Queen. I liked it! I can see why this album doesn't have as many famous songs, since it's more of a 40 minute long song/symphony. But it was very cool and makes me wonder what else Queen did, that isn't mentioned as often as their more popular songs.
I was almost about to give this a pretty cynical review, but after listening to it a second time this morning, I warmed up to it a lot more. I guess I just wasn't in the mood for rock opera yesterday. Once again, I'm a little too busy with festive period nonsense to give this the detailed appraisal it probably deserves, as there's a lot going on in this record. To summarize though, it's a pretty good listen! Favourite tracks: Father to Son, Ogre Battle, The March of the Black Queen
Really finding their sound. Little heavier and more serious at times
Again absolute genius
It's pretty good. Mercury is always good on vocals, but May and especially Taylor's vocal performances are also pretty good on here. I feel like it's missing a banger stand-out track though.
I think someone else on here had this one recently and gave it a 5; I won’t go that far, but this was very good. A grand total of zero of their hits on on here, but it’s not noticeable at all. It’s crazy that some of these tracks weren’t popular. A fun listen; it’s cool that I keep discovering new sides to a band that I thought I knew well. 4/5
Tenho este disco em minha coleção e nunca me dei conta do quão bom ele é, talvez pela qualidade ruim das gravações.
Definitely a banger, even with none of their most popular songs
Love some early Queen. Bunch of talented nerds.
Everything by Queen is iconic. This album is no exception.
Much more metal than I expected. Lots of epic guitar riffs but I can see why Zeppelin got all the attention.
I don't think I've ever listened to this album before even though I feel like I've listened to quite a lot of Queen in my day. It's pretty clear to hear that this is the album where Queen really start to develop their trademark sound, but it's not quite the Queen we know yet. Some of the hardest/heavy Queen I've ever heard. Standouts The Looser In The End The March Of The Black Queen 4/5
Good album. Expected more from queen
I feel like this would be the soundtrack to a really goth remake of Alice in Wonderland. The guitar is actually heavenly 9/10
It's Queen doing prog. Curious selection from their catalog to represent them in this list, given that it doesn't have any of their well-known hits. I do like Queen and I'm a fan, but because of their ubiquity on the radio I never had any of their records, so I had never heard this one straight through. The typical Queen musicianship and studio wizardry are in evidence and provide for a lively and fun listen and the fantasy-flavored lyrics are just bonkers. The March of the Black Queen reminded me a little of Elton John's Love Lies Bleeding in some spots. Epic, stately, straight-up full-force rock magnificence. I really enjoyed this one - it's got all you could ask for from a great rock record and Queen in general. Surprising that their sound was fully realized on only their second album.
Even though I am a fan of Queen, this is the first time I listened to this album. It is good, but not my favorite by them. Their talent really shines through though. (8/10)
rocking. melodic. queen shit.
The transition of this album is fascinating, and good. Should have listened to it (and bought it) long ago.
Bringing the bombast with swagger- in the best way possible.
Yea this is good.
Very good that is meant to be listened to as a full album.
How I want prog to sound.
Although this isn't my personal favorite Queen album, and not one I would normally sit and listen through, it's still brilliant.
Much different than any other Queen albums i have listened to out of the gate, has a really hard rock feel to it which I can get down with. Love a good instrumental to kick off an album. Prog Queen is the best Queen imo. This album was really good.
Wild I don't think I recognize a single song on here by name. Non-hit Queen kinda rules. I can see how some of these songs could develop into other well known songs as well. Also, they shred on most of these songs.
Good, first queen album I've listened to and has some misses, but without those it would be 5
Got taken off of Spotify but probably really good
Secret best era of Queen
Solid
This hits similar to the Yes record, in the bald spot of acceptance revealed by receding tastes and cares. It has the sort of mid-70s celtic jam fetish that Spinal Tap mocked. But I'm down with it. A lot of essential rock bands of this era had an antiseptic early period, like David Bowie's WTF early work. This is not that. It's the indulgent strut of a band just beginning its full bloom into weirdness. Yas Queen.
Es el so de queen, tot i que aquest no es el meu album preferit.
Almost 5. Rock I can appreciate.
I became a Queen fan a bit after this album came out. It's epic, but not quite 5 star epic for me...
When side 2 has Freddie, weirdness and rock... Why have I just listened to Roger Taylor and Brian May singing boring songs on side 1???
It’s as if Led Zeppelin embraced the nerd shit even more. What a fun album.
Queen delivered with every album a box of sweets.
I had not listened to this album before (despite being a Queen fan in my youth). Looking at the track listing I think there's only 1 track that I knew from the greatest hits - Seven Seas of Rhye - which is a banger. The rest of the album is a bit of a grower and is good fun albeit a bit bat shit crazy and all over the shop - with Queen clearly given a bit too much time to experiment in the studio. Interesting to hear echos of future Queen tracks amongst it all. Doing this list is making me realise that I like English 70's prog rock/ heavy (ish) metal - which is very much a surprise to me.
There will never be another band like queen
Despite my Queen fatigue in the last decade, Queen II still hits hard. They produced the shit out of this album. Brian May’s guitar tone is all his own and it sounds so damn good. I think he mimicked a sitar at one point. This album is theatrical and all over the place. Great listen.
I had never listened to this album. I don’t even think I’d heard any of these cuts previously. A really nice listen, some of it clearly recognizable as Queen, some of it not.
Interesting
Queen es queen y king
Queen at their heaviest and most proggy. Not as good as Led Zeppelin, but still pretty good.
The beginning of brilliance
I don't think I've heard any of these songs ever before besides Seven Seas of Rhye. Clearly not their best, but I just love Queen. Such a unique and amazing band.
Fantastic record, quality songs from beginning to end. Another album that proves that Queen is much more than just a hit singles band.
Great album lots of songs I’d not heard
This was decent as expected
This was pretty good .Didn’t
A good album, I liked The Loser In The End, Ogre Battle and The Fairy Fellor's Master the most.
They are definitely good Will I listen to again: 80%
I could listen to Freddie Mercury sing the phone book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
To start off, the album art is iconic. One of the greatest album covers ever. The songs are mostly mid. White Queen is pretty nice. Ogre Battle has a fun story. The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke is pretty good. But man, the guitar work is incredible. They really highlighted the guitar playing in this album. This would be a 3 with the guitar pushing it up to a 4. Best song: Seven Seas Of Rhye
it's queen like great
Awesome album and great Wiki article on it as well.
Not a bad album. Does only have one of their well known hits Seven Seas of Rhye. But over all a good album showing how Queen gets better with age.
Good
Queen is a band I often have trouble with. They're frequently guilty of wandering into 'show tune' territory. They tend to inhabit an awkward middle ground between Glam Rock, Prog, and Zeppelin-lite. Still, this was entertaining enough to garner 4/5 from me.
Quality Queen album.
A few classics, just the beginning for legendary band Queen.
Epic band. This album is okay. None of the absolute bangers, but very sound all-around.
This album screams of a young band finding its identity. Not really sure what they want to do sonically. You can hear the footsteps of the music landscape defining band they would become. For now they showed their excellent songwriting and care for the craft.
Listening to this is making me realize I've never listened to a Queen album. I only know their big hits. This is very Queen. Operatic. Overwrought. Opulent. Original. (What other O-words can I use to describe it?!) When it works, it's great. When it doesn't, it just seems a little silly. 4 for flamboyance!
Strong
Better than Coldplay
Weird. I like it
That was fun! I like the guitar tone. I also like when albums have instrumental opener tracks The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke gave me vibes of that one Star Wars instrumental for a bit hehe
Flamboyant fun.
Ah yes!
Theatrical and very fantasy-driven. I really enjoyed the mythical themes, however the album still delivers surprisingly emotional songs too like Father to Son an The Loser in the End to me personally. I love how the album is split across different singers, Brian May handling the heavier sides and Freddie handling the full theatrical songs, then Roger Taylor a drummer himself having his own track as well, there’s something really cool about a band where every member steps up and sings. To me this is pure proto–prog heavy metal. The instrumental and arrangements are insanely intricate, and the layering constantly adds electricity and tension to the songs. The dynamics are impressive too one moment it’s full blown theatrical heaviness and the it goes into something tender, then a build up to ramp back up again. They have managed to solidify a style that combines a lot of different elements, some of the most technical songwriting I’ve heard from a commercially successful band. My favourite has to be The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke, Ogre Battle and The March of the Black Queen too!
Liked this a lot, was new to me. Just a very good rock band here.
Not what I expected from a Queen album and and first listen I got distracted and didn’t live it, but second listen through this hooked me - super fun
This is the definition of the word "epic".
A perfectly good Queen album but nothing specific really grips me or stands out as something memorable. Good listen though, Queen rules.
just listened to this one like 2 days ago lol epic
I was impressed. For being a lesser know, early Queen album... this is great!
Not quite as good as some of Queen’s later masterpieces, but still a solid collection of mystical hard rock
love queen but never saw them as being album-conscious, i always assumed they were looking to make hits. this album proved me wrong - have never heard a single song off this album but was so surprised by how adventurous the album as a whole was, but still true to queen's sound with the harmonies and guitar riffs. listening to this felt like an experience
Every single Queen's album is an experience itself and you can understand that from the very beginning with the Procession intro.I wish this could have been a Medieval themed concept album though.Like a fairytale going through the darkness and the light.Alas it has enough fantasy in it,so i'm good. My most favourite songs are: White Queen(a bliss to my ears-the lyrics are like a poem), Some Day One Day,Nevermore,The March of The Black Queen. Not my favourite album of Queen but still brilliant. 4/5.
I’ve done myself a disservice over the years not paying much attention to early Queen. Of course, the hits on the later albums are great, but these early albums feel better as a whole. And Brian May rules. I prefer Sheer Heart Attack, but this one is very solid too.
great album not their best though
I think most of the songs on this album I was hearing for the first time. I have always appreciated the Queen songs I've heard but never sought them out. I was really impressed with the overall production and sound, I was very engaged and interested the whole time. Favorite track was definitely march of the black queen.
Really solid back-catalog Queen album that crescendos with Seven Seas of Rhye, a personal favorite of theirs. No notes, highly enjoyed, but stands in the shadow of some of their more successful albums.
More rock r roll needs lute music
I can't believe I've never heard any of these songs before, but it is very fun album and I really liked it. Never been the hugest Queen fan but always appreciated them. This album is an enjoyable romp filled with epic campy songs.
Certainly not the greatest hits of Queen, but that doesn't make it bad at all. It was nice listening through a whole album of songs I didn't recognize but could still enjoy the sound of. Would need several more listens to appreciate the lyrics.
Day 80 First listen- A solid record, really enjoyed all the tracks and the march of the black queen is one of my fav queen songs ever! Loved the guitar throughout the album. (4.5/5)
I actually do like to be beside the seaside.
should have been called Queens - a worthy successor to Queen and vastly superior to Qu33n and Queen: Resurrection
bim autofahre glost. sehr sehr kreatovs album. mer gseht wo queen mol anegoht. und glichzitig sinds nochli verspielter als spöter. VIER
Queeny
Big, bold, theatrical
I was never fully exposed to Queen outside of radio singles and the occasional deep cut. Queen II is the reason to go down this journey. I'm giving it a 4, but it may change as I listen to it a few more times. The production is huge! The arrangements are intricate and developed. Arena prog rock finding it's way into becoming one of the biggest bands in the world.
Really cool to hear a different sound from a band that was so boxed-in in my mind.
i get why people like them not rly my exact cuppa but its good
Great
Best Song: Seven Seas of Rhye This was interesting. Part of it is pretty heavy; heavier than your run of the mill Queen. The second half was a bit more experimental and theatrical. Overall, it's entertaining and enjoyable. 4/5.
Wort wort wort.
Queen avant d'être tout à fait Queen, avec moins d'opéra et plus de guitares un peu énervées.
Slay Queeeens zum zweite! Und da hends widermal eis duregslayed. Wie chan e band so spass mache? Au wenns ned mini every day musig isch trotzdem 2,3 wegbegleiter*inne für d zuekunft gfunde. Gueti vier uppercuts für MGMT
Side A- *ahem* I mean Side White, starts off really strong, with every song being it's own distinct genre and experiment, melting well into the concept of the album, unfortunately Side Black falls back slightly on a more repeatable 'Queen' sound. Good Album
I have such a hard time rating albums from major bands. On the one hand, this was pretty mediocre as far as Queen albums go, there weren't any real standouts and it sounded exactly like I expected. On the other, a mediocre Queen album is still better than so so many mediocre albums on this list, so I'm torn.
Don't really like the popular queen, but this one is actually quite enjoyable!
Really fun album, fav was probably ogre battle, lowkey forgot the rest of my review cause I forgot to write it down..
This album is definitely not my style of music but is honestly really enjoyable. The instrumentation and lyrics are totally over the top but also really good. Honestly no standout tracks bc this whole album feels like one complete experience. I wouldn’t really listen to one song on its own. 5/5 deserves to be on this list
7/10
Good variety while remaining connected through a common sound/feeling. Talented dudes
A whole queen album and sad to say I didn’t recognize any of the songs. Not my favorite but still queen.
Queen est toujours une valeur sûre!
This album is pure fantasy cosplay rock. Very fun.
fav track: the march of the black queen
It was a cool listen.
Really liked this. Familiar with later Queen but hadn't heard this record or any of the songs on it. Less weird than the later stuff but you can hear where they're going.
Okay Queen deserve to be on this list more than once, but not for Queen II. News of the World is way better. Dimery shoulda picked just one though and it should be Day at the Races, so go listen to that. Four stars just because Queen is on the list more than once; this is a five-star album though.
Good yes
Doesn't even sound like Queen until 'Seven Seas of Rhye'. That track feels like a preview of what's to come. Everything before that is something else entirely. Not a bad something else, but definitely something else. A little chaotic, a little proggy, and just kind of weird. A good weird though.
Never heard of this before. Must get low airplay.
Good album but the best is yet to come.
You can really hear how new stereo was on this album. Lots of aggressive panning. I did know how much musical DNA Queen shares with led Zeppelin until now.
Queen doing what Queen does best. Can’t believe I haven’t heard most of these, but it’s just as good as I would expect. A little on the heavier side in a great way.
An album of many sides and genres mixed well.
Queen albums are always an experience. Iconic. Each song feels like 3 different songs in one. Also very theatrical in an endearing way.
The Loser in The End.
Prefer the greatest hits
This album was a trip (complimentary)
This album is classic Queen and I loved every minute of it. I love how bold and theatrical their songs sound and the vocals, transitions, and instrumentals are always on point. I had a great time listening to this album and I would definitely jam out to it again sometime soon.
Not familiar enough with this album (yet), but bumping up to 4 because of the powerhouse guitar, Freddie's voice, and because I want to add it to my digital library
not as familar as a lot of queen is to me but still good
Very much enjoyed, and this is an older, rock-ier side of Queen than I knew, but still very dramatic and fantasical. (White Queen / Black Queen and Ogre Battle stood out especially).
I have owned this album for close to fifty years. Like most people of my generation I bought and listened over and over again to " A night at the Opera". A few, like myself, went straight out to buy their back catalogue. If you liked Bohemian Rhapsody and the Prophets Song, then this is the album for you. This is the rock opera that should have, but never was made. Not side one and side two it had side white (Brian May compositions with a great track by Roger Taylor to close it out) and black side (Full Freddy at his most Gothic). "Ogre Battle" is pure metal, "March of the Black Queen" is the closest to Bohemian Rhapsody, in structure at least. I would have loved to have seen this actually staged with costumes, choreography, and a pit orchestra. Side Black could have been pure rock-opera Gothic theatre, and Side White a sweeping fantasy epic.
Would it be bad if I said that I preferred their later, more commercial phase? Oh well, I do still enjoy this.
It's camp. It's rock. It's camp rock. I've only heard one other complete Queen album and mainly know the greatest hits, so it's always a little strange to hear non-Freddie-led songs. This was a rocking silly time!
I like Queen as much as the next guy, but I have to say this album didn’t do much for me. If they didn’t close with the strongest track, it would not left a very good impression at all. Reluctantly rounding up from 3.5*
All the things I like about Queen with none of the songs I know. And no synthesizers! Definitely worth more listens.
not my personal taste but also objectively good.
My introduction to Queen Great musicianship and Freddie Mercury’s voice was something I’d never heard before
Used to be my favourite Queen album, until I properly listened to Sheer Heart Attack - a record with all the focus and cohesion which II is missing. But the good side of that deficiency is a smorgasboard of music, utterly unafraid to take yet another new turn in sound, rhythm, mood or style. Some great heavy moments, and Ogre Battle is probably still my favourite Queen song! ---- I wrote all that earlier in the day, before listening the album all the way through for the first time in years. Either it isn't as scattergun and harebrained as I had remembered, or I'm much more accepting of that sort of thing in music now, but it's a solid pop-prog rock record. Probably back to being my favourite of theirs! Favourite tracks: Father to Son, March of the Black Queen, Ogre Battle, Seven Seas of Rhye, Ogre Battle
Storytelling. <3
Good quality album before the mega-hits.
One of the heaviest collections I’ve heard from Queen. All very good stuff though. It’s not classified as a concept album, but it follows some themes and definitely dances on the line between prog, hard rock, and queen’s typical theatrical fare. Awesome stuff.
Hard to believe there is a Queen album that absolutely rips without a radio singles on it. Prog rock opera at its finest.
For my first Queen album it wasn't bad but I feel like it just wasn't for me as it was boring at some parts (imo) but I definitely get why people like it. and I wld like to visit this and other Queen albums after. pretty solid album
Hadn’t heard most of this before, a great listen!
Fun and enjoyable.
I liked the album, it felt familiar, I liked the music itself, very rich and engaging, but wasn’t able to focus on the lyrics so i guess I’ll have to listen to it again some other time. As a first album to be recommended, Queen was a safe bet -old but gold-. I’m looking forward to the next album :)
Really good, not sure what I was expecting but it was a good listen
Highlight Song/s: Father To Son, The Loser In The End, Ogre Battle, The March Of The Black Queen and Funny How Love Is Most people probably wouldn't have this in mind when thinking of Queen; heavy, proggy, fantasy lyrics and a bit sludgy at points. Definitely not much radio-friendly music is on this one. I never really thought they would be a band worth it enough to listen to any their albums, but this isn't at all bad; such a great album experience. Perhaps their 70s albums are worth listening to at first (if it were to listen through their albums.) 'A Night at the Opera' is also on this list, so I am looking forward to that now. I know 'Procession' is technically the first track, but the first proper song 'Father To Son' is amazing, which is very proggy sounding. 'The Loser In The End' and 'The Fairy Feller's' both have a sick bassline, also the latter has an amazing beat to it. The stepping stone that was needed to create 'Bohemian Rhapsody' called 'The March Of The Black Queen'; which is a WAY better 'Bohemian Rhapsody.' 'Black Queen' then transitions into 'Funny How Love Is', which is one of the best transitions ever.
34/1001 :: Queen - Queen II Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ✅ Rating: 7 Fav Tracks: Father to Son In this edition of “It’s Crazy I Never Heard This One” Queen has always been very similar to The Clash in that I respect it, have heard stuff, like a bunch of songs but never dove in… So here we are this is the first time I’ve listened to a Queen album in its entirety. And, as expected it was great. Very theatrical, incredible instrumentation, Freddie Mercury is truly one of one and Brian May is much heavier than I thought? This album came out in 74 and dare I say sounded Sabbathy at times? I didnt realize that was a thing with them. So yeah, Queen might be a little too theatrical for me in general but I also probably need more Queen in my life…
Слушал до этого только в детстве. Чувства смешанные.
Älskar Queen men inte deras bästa album
Ingen av låtarna på detta album är nära Queens topp 10 mest populära på Spotify, men det låter ju jättebra!
There are so many huge Queen songs that have become part of the public consciousness, that it’s hard to believe that I wouldn’t recognise a single song here. Also, that album cover is crazy because the average Joe would absolutely expect Bohemian Rhapsody after seeing that! Anyway, the music here leans more into the rockier side of things, when compared to some of the other poppier tracks that Queen had. I did quite enjoy it, but I equally understand why these songs don’t get regular radio play. Still, it’s good fun.
3.5
Mir zu langatmig, ansonsten ganz okay
Another one that I don't have to listen to rate. I've listened at least six times at its entirety and my impression probably will not change. Queen II is an interesting album, mixing the heavy sound of the band's debut with operatic elements that were more refined in Sheer Heart Attack and, especially, A Night at the Opera. Although it suffers from poor mixing (not as much as the debut, of course), there's a extremely rich sound palette to be explored here. I personally recommend the strong start of the album, with Procession, Father to Son and White Queen (As It Began), but the whole record is pretty respectable (with the exception of, maybe, Funny How Love Is, with its endless fadeout)
Good sophomore album, hard rocking, lots of Brian May
My favorite Queen record. It’s kinda prog kinda metal and while people peg Queen as a singles band this is definitely an album worth your time in its entirety
I used to be such a big queen fan. Anything 70s classic rock to be honest. In the years that followed, my music taste expanded and all those bands returned a bit more to the background, and I started listening to Queen a lot less. Every time I listen to an album by them, I just think to myself “man, I should listen to more Queen.” This album is Queen’s heaviest and most prog-sounding, switching it up everywhere they go. From soft and sweet folksy Melodie’s do heavy hitting, almost metal guitar riffs. This works really well on songs like March Of The Black Queen or Father To Son, but sometimes, only sometimes, the album as a whole feels a bit disjointed. This album is certainly one of their most underrated. There are not really any hits on it, but it bangs and it’s great. 4/5
Queen!
Their second album. Rock. Fantastical song lyrics, complex song structures, huge vocals and massive Rock guitar and drums. Yep, this is Queen ! Fuck me, Freddie can belt out a tune eh ! He nails Father to Son. This is an album with a wall of sound. Seven Seas Of Rhye is an absolute banger of a Rock song. Queen can be a bit marmite to some people and although I love my Punk, I do love me some grandiose Queen !
Not so much a sign of greater things to come for the band, but almost something that they left behind for chart success. My view is, both are great! This early prog stuff and the later era when they changed rock and pop music forever... Either way they have always pushed boundaries but stayed musically accessible and stuffed full of talent.
Awesome record.
I was ignorant of Radiohead
A delightful fantasy-tinged Queen album that conjures up images of castles and fairy tales. “Nevermore” might be one of the most beautiful sub-2 minute songs I’ve ever heard. I never wanted it to end. One star off because Freddie is always too nice letting other people in this band sing lead on songs! Stop! You’re Freddie Mercury!
They have a great sound outside of the massive singles
Amazing album
The only way this could be better is if “I’m in love with my car” was on it
Not sure it is my favourite queen album but as always with I think all of there albums it is worth a listen with wonderfully written songs, that keep you guessing about what the band can't do. I feel it says a lot that I say this isn't one of my favourite albums of theres yet I still can't scoring it any lower.
Queen isn't really my thing, but why is Bohemian Rhapsody and Killer Queen the only songs you ever hear? They have more bangers
I mean it's Queen. Fave song: The March Of The Black Queen Honorable Mentions: Father To Son, White Queen, and Nevermore
very much enjoyed “Seven Seas Of Rhye” !
No dull moment with Queen, that was amazing. Second half was much better than the first tho. Favourite Song: The March of the Black Queen Honorable Mention: Seven Seas of Rhye
Really good album from start to finish. Really like “The Loser in the End” and “Nevermore.” Imo this album is a strong 4 but close to a 5
Classic
No notes, great album, Queen is always excellent Fav Songs: March of the Black Queen, Seven seas of Rhye
Good ol' early Queen -- I enjoyed the sound and vibe of this album
Favorite track: White Queen other picks: nevermore, the march if the black queen, father and son
I knew the albums name and only The seven seas of Rye... Damn, this is good :)
Queen has always been an acquired taste for me. They undoubtedly have a lot of great music and are an incredibly talented/gifted band, but they’ve never been one of my favorites. What’s super interesting Queen II is that it is very much a metamorphosis album. You can hear all of these pieces which are representative of what the band will become, but they are not fully there yet, leading to a fascinating mix of straightforward rock and theatrics. For me, it’s the former that actually is a lot more appealing. All of this album was new to me, and I have to admit that it was a very good listen. Their songs are really intricate which I do appreciate. And some of the things which happen on this recording (shifting where the sound is coming from, changing of keys or even styles) are really cool. A microcosm for this album is definitely March of the Black Queen. It has all of these amazing parts, but it also has some bombast too it, much like the rest of the record. Other songs on this record were better than some of the more standard Queen fare. For example, White Queen was interesting because, frankly, parts of it didn’t sound like Queen at all. It was very much a song that fits in the middle of prog rock, which I generally love, and it was nice to hear them not be so bombastic. Some Day One Day, Funny How Love Is, and The Loser In the End were similarly non-traditional Queen - I.e. more straight forward rock songs. It was great to hear the band in this fashion, as it was much more about the musicianship as opposed to the show. Seven Seas of Rhye was a fun listen: at times Billy Joel-esque, at times straight guitar rock, still other times vocal mastery. I enjoyed this one a lot and a definite highlight. A quick additional note, it was amazing to hear how quickly the songs changed, both within songs and when moving to the next one. You almost never knew when you were on the next track, unless you heard the theme of the song change or actually looked at what was playing. In total, I enjoyed this way more than anticipated because while this was distinctly Queen at points, at others you wouldn’t know it was them at all. Meanwhile, the fact that you can start to hear what the band is going to become … it’s like listening to the teenage years of Queen as they move from boy to man. And to be honest, when it’s just about the songs and not about being over the top, as incredible as those theatrics can be, I personally like them much better. That all said, there’s no doubting the true talent and musicianship of this band, which is displayed throughout this album. For that, they earn a 4.
I was surprised to find a Queen album where I wasn’t familiar with a single song. It was obvious they were still finding their signature sound, but that is part of the brilliance of this album. Hell, Freddy doesn’t even sing the lead on several of the songs. I think the fact that I wasn’t familiar with it made it that much better.
Great album with two distinct halves, perhaps their best overall.
4/5
I had assumed I'd be familiar with at least some of the tracks on this album, but was surprised to find the whole thing a new listening experience. First impression was not great - the themes reminded me so much of the baroque rock that had dominated the 60s (not a fan) that I practically checked out. Really glad I gave it 3 more listens - the melodies and powerful instrumentals make this more than worth it. I especially liked the range of vocals - not just from Freddie Mercury, but from his equally versatile band mates.
A fantastic album that lives up to expectations. From the powerful vocals to the intricate arrangements, it’s a great listen from start to finish.
It's a masterpiece. Pure Queen, revolutionary and breathtaking.
Liked it a lot!
not their best but still solid
LOVE that Queen guitar sound!! 4
Enjoyed the rock and Queenness of this album
Excellent
I’ve only ever listened to the big singles but now I might think I might be a Queen fan???
Really good musical construction and aspects. Worth additional listens.
great, love the sound of this album, queen is just great and this really displays their unique sound
Hienoa musaa! Itselle vieraampaa Queenia, taisi menestys olla vielä edessäpäin.
Kaunista! Queen on aina osannut hommansa. 👍🏻
Went in expecting I'd love it. And it is good, don't get me wrong. I just didn't love it.
I haven't ever listened to old queen, was good.
I liked it better than I thought I would, but maan I still dont like glam rock. I think it’s way too extra and too much in a bad way for me. Then again this one is better than night at the opera for me as it’s a liiittle less theatrical. Bit more noisy, which makes it the best of theirs for me so far. Enough guitar solos for me for a week too. Let’s give it a weeeeak 4
Consistent, they got a very unique sound
I just recently listened to this album, and damn. It is pretty freaking good. Could only imagine it being released back in 70s and listening to it for the first time. Blown away.
The Good: Queen! The Bad: Not my favorite album… The Ugly: not a damn thing! We are 4 1/2 months late on reviewing this album… not because I did not listen to it, but more so because I did not know what write… And today is no different. It seems that those who know, will rate this album 6* as it is so good that you don’t even know it. So I listened to it, probably 6 times, or 8, in the past 4 1/2 months, trying to see if I can find that missing something that will make me part of the elite crowd that knows that this album is Top-5 GOAT of any recording, ever… To quote U2, I still haven’t found what I’m looking for. I like the album, but I prefer News of the World, A Night at the Opera, or Sheer Heart Attack, even The Game I prefer to Queen II So, I will give the album 4*, knowing that I will play countless times more just to see if I can finally see it… and then give it 6*
(35 known/79 new)
Not a revelation but great album.
Bin ja nicht son Queen Fan aber schon einfach technisch gute Musik
Nice and old fashioned. Really like it. Early Queen is awsome.
was unfamiliar with this album, but enjoyed the whole cohesive experience. can hear a distinct influence from The Who, Bowie, and rock operas of the time. mellow and melodic vocals much different from Freddie's later signature belting vocal style.
Interesting album. Certainly a band trying to carve out their style. I think this was a good effort from the group. A little less poppy and a little more modern rock (for the 70s).
Sounded like Queen. Works for me.
Album 776 of 1089 Queen - Queen II (1974) Rating : 3.5 / 5 I do enjoy Queen but this isn't my favorite album from them. I hear the great vocals and musicianship but the songs just aren't at the level Queen will eventually reach.
This album feels like rock and roll and is definitely a statement. A lot is put out by this album, and while I don't find myself personally relating to most of it, it does feel substantial and novel in many ways. An album I am glad to have consumed but unlikely to come back to.
Most of this is "meh" for Queen. Really it only has one standout song that holds its own compared to their other hits, "The Seven Seas of Rhye", and it really just goes to convince me that Queen is really at their best when they're doing weird fantasy world building in their music. It's for this song alone, I'm giving it four stars - otherwise, it would probably just justify a 2.5
As a rule of thumb... I fucking hate Queen. However, this has always been my favourite of their albums. I have not listened to it for about 30 years. I'm very surprised to say I still like this one. Must be because I have heard these songs about 100,000 times less often than all the other ones. 4/5
- I understand why people have a hard time with this one; it's not the Queen we know and love. The parts are there but they have not quite gelled yet. That said, this is a great record and from any other band, it would be considered at the top of their output. I'm only going to give a 4 because the debut is similar but it IS a masterwork. It's astounding how good this band was. -
oh wow an album without any of their big singles mixing is a bit weird even on the 2011 remaster (the version i heard) but its an old album right, ill give them a cup of tea here. never heard any of these songs, but they're great!
Freddie sounds so different in this one, wasn't expecting this but I liked it
The Dark Heart of Queen. Strong prog rock elements peppered with the theatrical flair that would permeates through all their work. Stand out tracks " The March of the Black Queen" - prog rock deliciousness and "Seven Seas of Rhye" - glorious hard rock/pop
3.5 - Good
