Crazy album to start with

geiles zeug

Incredible, and live!! Not normally as big a fan of live albums, but this is great

Really great, especially by live album standards. It’s so lively

A great live album from one of the Blues legends.

What a master. It's so great that we have recordings like this to hear the greats in their prime. I love Muddy Waters voice so much.

Goodbye Newport blues

Six stars

Swanky yummy good. Old school blues with all the grooves and space bonus points for being a live album.

Phenomenal live album!

So much greatness in one place. Had not done this as an album, what a different experience. Lovely.

Such a foundational album. Great listen!

I mean what is there to say? He’s THE 20th century American blues recording artist. Such an easy listen. A great showman on this live recording. It’s nice to hear him pre-British invasion, too. A lot of the invading bands (particularly The Rolling Stones) idolized him and while I don’t think that changed his sound, he probably had some feelings about it. Anyway. This is a treasure and I’m glad it came up. Standout tracks: I Got My Brand On You, I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man, Tiger in Your Tank, I’ve Got My Mojo Working, pts. 1 and 2

Great live album. Infectious energy!

So smooth

If you want to get down with some blues well this is it

Essential folk blues.

Loved it! Good background music while you’re getting stuff done

Awesome album--I love it!!

Finally some good old blues

Excellent electric blues.

Amazing!!

Pretty much quintessential Delta Blues that rips from start to finish. It’s easy to hear why this was so resonant at the time.

Wonderful Album, love it! 5 stars!!

I don’t usually listen to the blues but Muddy Waters is where it is at.

I mean I like jazz so...

Goddamn, this hits! Like the cover itself, a classic Country/Folk album. A bit rusty, but who gives a shit? It hits!

Never listened to Muddy Waters before. Had a lot of fun with this album. The swing rhythm with hearty blues was a banger the whole way. Listened to the whole thing driving in a snowstorm.

Outstanding, an absolute joy to discover such an amazing recording.

Great MW...funny right after that we listened to the Stones "rolling stone"and they covered MW perfect.

Um… This influenced pretty much everything

Now I remember why I like the blues.

Great live live blues album.

Great band- I really loved the drums, and harmonica. I wish you could hear the bass better in the mix. Favorite songs were tiger in tank and mojo working.

Iconic and amazing. Everything about this is great

Incredible.

Enjoyed it from start to finish.

Pure, essential blues recording. Sounds as good as anything Muddy Waters ever did in the studio. Fave Songs (All Songs, from most to least favorite): Got My Mojo Working, I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man, Got My Mojo Working, Part 2, I Got My Brand on You, Goodbye Newport Blues, I Feel So Good, Soon Forgotten, Tiger in Your Tank

Purely spectacular.

Fantastic album. Blues is a strange beast - it can be seen as formulaic, all twelve bar repeating rhythm figures and pentatonic scales, but it's so much about feel and emotion, and this album really captures it at its finest. Wonderful.

Original blues sound, by one of the best

Have heard this before and love it. Great to listen again. Surprising don't own in my collection but may change that soon. A blues classic and I think the live setting here really complements Muddy's powerful vocals. Full of energy and everything you want from a blues record.

HOLY COW. What a masterpiece.

Great album! Always think of "Mannish" when I head Muddy Waters, so it was interesting to hear more music that he made.

wonderfully racous blues gains steam as it moves through the set.

ok this one does hit.

IT'S MY ALBUM RANKING AND I GET TO GIVE MUDDY WATERS AT NEWPORT 1960 FIVE STARS IF I WANT TO! I mean... it's Muddy Waters and Otis Spann and James Cotton and the rest of the Muddy Waters Blues Band recording the first real live blues album. What else could I possibly give it. They're firing on all cylinders, Muddy Waters sounds cool and in control as always, the harmonica is wailing away, and the audience is loving them (you can see more of that if you watch the recorded footage of the concert). Just a fun and joyful moment in blues history. Favorites: Hoochie Coochie Man and Got My Mojo Working are classics, and Goodbye Newport Blues is a very nice ending with Otis Spann on vocals. They're all standouts to me sorry for not being objective about Muddy Waters

Amazing

Great blues album, another live banger

Knew him before from the songs „Mannish Boy“, „I‘m Your Hoochie Coochie Man“ One of the greatest in Blues. IF NOT THE GREATEST!!!! Every song equally good!!!!

Great album

cream of the crop as far as blues go

The platonic ideal of Chicago blues

Muddy at his best

Legendary. Favorite track: Tiger in Your Tank

Great album

Amazing live recording. Up there with BB King at the Regal.

When did the Blues become a dirge? Cause this ain’t that! Was gonna tell a story about young me and how I accidentally discovered this and how I think it was an important punk album but I’ll save it for another time. A lot of these albums are historically important because of their influence or popularity but don’t age well. This is not one of those. Which isn’t to say it wasn’t popular and influential. It’s just a great record. Fun to listen to, soulful, all the musicians are in top form. A gem top to bottom and glad to see it on the list.

love it! not my typical listening but the funk and history feels great. gives me the same vibes as listening to johnny cash's live albums. should listen to more of this type of music

Excellent album from a consummate artist. Hoochie Coochie Man was a highlight.

Blueprint to everything. Master.

Nice sound, great lyrics!

Muddy with all of his gritty blues magnificence

Fantastic Album

Waters' polished, evocative style paired with his experienced vocals made this a rare live album I enjoyed.

Absolute classic blues grooves. So many tracks that you didn't know you knew, but you knew.

Muddy Waters' "At Newport 1960" is a timeless blues masterpiece that captures the raw energy and soul of a live performance. From the opening chords of "I Got My Mojo Working" to the closing notes of "Goodbye Newport Blues," Waters' electrifying stage presence and stellar band create an unforgettable musical experience. The album's historic significance in bringing blues to a wider audience is undeniable, making it a must-listen for anyone seeking the essence of authentic blues.

In a word: essential listening. Great set from an all-time great blues artist.

Got my mojo working

Live album - recorded in July of 1960, released in November of 1960. Muddy Waters (McKinley Morganfield) was a Chicago Blues Musician. He was born 1913, and died 1983 at age 70. The album opens with a lot of energy - the first three tracks have a wonderful, bouncy, bluesy energy to them. By the time "Soon Forgotten" comes around, we are slowing down to a swing level melody. What a soulful track - it's hard to put into words; there is a pain trying to break through on this one. The album picks right back up once the track ends. The album keeps the party going until we find ourselves within the somber halls of "Goodbye Newport Blues." This was a favorite of mine, as I love slow and somber tunes. At this point, I realize there is no critique of this album: it's timeless, and provides a soundscape that is nostalgic of a time long since passed.

Fantastic

Added a couple of tunes to my playlist! Takes me back to Dingwalls in the 1980s - I was definitely born in the wrong era 🤣 fantastic harmonica!

I wish I could have seen him live.

Feet: stomping Head: nodding Mojo: working

Astonishing, this man is made of blues

I'm a fan of the Rolling Stones, who were greatly influenced by Muddy Waters, so I am predisposed to like this album. A lot of these songs are blue standards and you can see why he was so influential. I think this is an album that needs to be heard in order to understand what other bands are copying and trying to live up to. When I talk about other bands/artists trying to do white guy blues, that's not this. THIS is what they are trying to do.

voz de oso, dicha y felicidad, compacto y brillante

Superb

This album reminds me why I'm listening to this list. As much as I love listening to the music, I understand that a lot of albums here have influenced artists and genres, and generally played a part in music history. I went in not knowing who Muddy Waters is, but after researching the Wikipedia page and other reviews, I understand that this record played an important part in introducing the blues to a younger, whiter, more international audience, influencing the scenes that would lead to the British Invasion, and generally being a catalyst for rock music in general. This album's influence cannot be overstated, and in addition, it was just enjoyable to listen to. That Chicago Blues sound is just wonderful, and I really loved the faster boogies also. A very good live album that absolutely deserves to be on this list. Favourite: I've Got My Mojo Working

Hot blooz

Great live album, writing blues history. It gradually builds up toward I've Got My Mojo Working when Waters fires on all cylinders, followed by Otis Spann wrapping things up with a slow blues, arguably the best song on the record.

Peerless. Blues as it was meant to be.

That Mississippi Mudd is so good

Cool live album, that inspired tons and tons of following artists throughout the years. Muddy Waters was the bees knees, and this album shows it! 9 out of 10

So good

Amazing live blues album.

I don't usually like live albums, but sometimes sheer talent can outweigh the chore of audience noise and poor production. This is one of those times.

Got to give it a 5. Not listened to much blues but this was quality live music and must have influenced all sorts.

Muddy Waters is the best

One of the best albums I’ve ever heard.

I’d never listened to Muddy Waters music properly before. It’s important.

so dang good

Great album, must've been a blast being at this show.

Holy cow what a great album. I don't normally listen to blues ever, let alone the older stuff, but I was invested from start to finish. Every song had me tapping my feet and bobbing my head. What an amazing set.

Fuck yeah. The Blues God. And he proved it here. Favorite track: Baby, Please Don't Go

STEREO STEREO STEREO.. tuuu tu tuuu tu uu .. PFT tuu tu utuuu tuu u PFT... niin se kuuluu olla... i got my brand on you

I love some Muddy Waters.

Muddy Waters playing the blues.

I loved listening to this album that was such an influence on so many 60s musicians to come. This was the real, original deal.

I have never listened to a Muddy Waters album. Wasn’t sure I would be into it, but I was. Good times!!

Nice to wallow in the Muddy Waters today. Appreciate hearing it from the source.

I started listening to this immediately after watching a terrible documentary about a cult that committed sexual abuse and branding of women. Bad timing. Off to a bad bad start with that first song. I also have not had a lot of interest in the blues in my past, so this isn’t promising… Fortunately I enjoyed the non-branding-related songs on this album very much! Lots of energy, great blues playing, and except for that first track (which then repeated near the end - UGH), which I will excuse but never enjoy. I was surprisingly into this! Really great!

Beautiful. Muddy Waters is, and always will be, an absolute treasure.

Classic blues as it is. The essential of it, I would say) And a good live vibe is here as well.

SUCH AN AMAZING ALBUM. Muddy Waters is a fantastic vocalist and guitar player and every song is just perfection. I love the sense of fun and the unrestrained masculinity (mojo!). One of my all time faves, everything this man touched was gold in my book. 5/5

Rating: 9/10 Best songs: I got my brand on you, I’m your hoochie coochie man, Tiger in your tank, Feel so good, I’ve got my mojo working

Amazing blues forgot how good he is

One of the most influential artists of 60's this and the Folk Singer album highlight the reason why. This potentially could be the greatest blues album of all time.

Muddy Waters was my introduction to Blues when I first heard Mannish Boy, and he defines blues to me. Imagine being in the audience to hear this performance being recorded. Nothing can match the growl, howl, and beat of Waters' vocals and guitar. Brand, Hoochie Coochie, Mojo Working,... all great tunes. The only song that doesn't connect for me is Tiger in your Tank, although because it's a take on a gasoline ad popular at the time, it gets a bonus mark.

If you like Blues (and I do) this album is amazing. Not much more needs to be said.

Clasico!

Súper P.

Fantastic live album

Fantastic. The love concert album done right.

Sounds like home. Great album. Classic

Amazing album. Loving this site

Classic Chicago blues. Love it. Also during this set (but not on this album) he brought out some famous swing dancers (check out youtube). This is what I want in a live blues album. Top form from one of the all time greats.

Okay yeah, this is the good stuff. Incredible blues. A

For lovers of Chicago Blues, it doesn't get much better than this.

idk yet

Excellent concert, great stuff :)

It's Muddy. Give the man 5 stars.

I only knew Muddy Waters as the guy who brought us "You Need Love", the blues song that became a foundation for Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love". And boy how ignorant I was in Muddy Waters's impact in the world of blues. Not a big fan of live albums, but I think this one captured the energy of blues and Waters's irresistible grooves and charisma. A gem in the top of the godfather of all modern music.

Wantlist

12 bar blues is one of my favourite genres and though a bit tame by todays standards, this is the stuff - and standards is the right word.

A classic live blues album, first heard this 35years ago, and it still brings me out in goosebumps.

Incredible

10/10, Muddy Waters is the best I really enjoyed Hard Again when I got that album, and this one doesn’t disappoint either he just makes blues so much fun (not that the blues need any help, of course)

Marvelous!

Oldschool jazz

God damn

I wanna listen to this. Added to my spotify

A timeless classic.

Un blues!

Classic

Solid album. I will definitely keep this in my rotation.

Lovely lovely lovely blues album. Always knew his name, but didn't realize how much I enjoy his music. Toes the line between big band and blues, getting some real big Louisiana sound out of tracks like 'I Feel So Good' / 'Got My Mojo Working' and then settling into a more somber mood for 'I Got My Brand On You' and 'Goodbye Newport Blues'.

Still holds up.

New to me, but I love this old style blues music. Something that would fit the mood at any moment.

Dude, Muddy Waters is an icon. Newport is iconic. Muddy Waters at Newport is iconic.

Never really listened to blues, but this just changed my mind about it

The argument I have seen online is that the blues has a limited vocabulary. Yes, the blues can be somewhat... limited. But performed by a master, like Waters, the blues will always sound like a lot more. Hard to believe that this is from 60 years ago. The recording sounds pretty good for that long ago. I would have liked a bigger instrumentation, but it's live. So... what can you expect? Amazing guitar work by Muddy Waters here. Without stuff by him, most rock would have not existed.

Blues pretty much as good as gets. All the standards are on here. It's impossible to underestimate how important artists like Muddy Waters were in the development of rock and roll, especially in Britain.

And here it is one of the finest Blues artists. Every song is a banger music to dance and to listen. We all know Blues music gave birth to pretty much everything we listen to but it's also amazing music in it's own right and Muddy waters is the master. The piano the brass the vocals all of it sublime.

Pretty much the ultimate blues album. Superb

I have that one at home, Muddy is great!

Really an enjoyable album. Soulful and smooth.

Love it!

Fantastic live set, would've loved the chance to see Muddy play in-person.

29th November 2021 Listened throughout the day while at home home. My jam.

First of 1001. Is ir Lv = av or Lv = aDv?

AWESOME

Killer

Nostalgic blues album hit me just at the right time.

This is a great blues album. The sound is just amazing!

This was killer! great find, would be a great thing to play in the kitchen while cooking dinner or something. Pleased with this one for sure.

Without Muddy Waters, there is no British Invasion....or any rock music that's worth listening to.

Absolute dopamine hitter. Chased all the anxiety out of my body.

Feels like the definition of Blues

The founder of the Chicago school of blues. His charisma is felt through his songs. Very exciting and sensual, so far this is the highest score

This is great blues in a gorgeous live setting. I wish I could have been at this set. This is really really good. You can hear people screaming and getting down. 5 stars.

One of the greatest blues players showing you why. Album lives up to any hype it could receive with a true performer on display.

Great start for the list. Really good, a classical blues album.

Good live blues-sound. Includes many of Muddy Waters essentials like Hoochie Coochie Man and Got My Mojo Working. A must for any fan of the Chicago Blues

Loved it! So classic

He ahí un gran libro.

Holy lord. There may be nothing more pure.

Muddy waters is probably the king of live music

Stellar! An absolute legend, phenomenal audio quality.

un delicia de álbum caray

Muddy being muddy

Absolute blues masterpieces performed in an incredible atmosphere 4.6

Classic blues. What's not to like

Submerge me in a big hot bath of Muddy Waters. I drink up this music. Bloody love it.

Класс

Great lives blues album. Interesting backstory behind how this one eventually ended up happening. Need to listn to more blues after this one. John Lee Hooker and Howlin' Wolf are next on my list.

I really liked it. Added to my favorites.

Like he wrote the twelve bar structure himself. So good

Blues classic from a real OG

Lovely live performance, but why did he play Mojo Working twice in a row?

Very good live album, Muddy Waters is killing it

Reminded me of jazz class :) I really loved Mojo- I could listen to that for HOURS.

Really fun live blues album. Muddy just plowed through all the songs with next to zero breaks in between. Really good rhythms, the guitars sounded great, and there was a ton of soul in the music. Only negative is that a few of the songs blended together a little too much. Overall a solid listen, 4/5

This is so good I can’t believe it’s a live album that was recorded live in 1960…and outside too. I mean the sound is amazing. Muddy is an all timer in popular music. Arguably the top dog of blues. This shows why.

25/06/26 - At Newport 1960 - Muddy Waters - 1960 - Chess Some are syrup and some are sherbet. At this moment, I am 100% sherbert- fizzing, zipping, a bit too acidic, too much, too soon dissolved. A dash of sherbert could be sharp, fun, but this feels like a pinprick deluge. 1001 days seems enough time to simmer some syrup into the system. My anxiety dreams aside - this is all to say this album was not sherbet. No, it was pure, unadulterated, opaque and amber ooze. It was rich, and smooth and self-assured. It was cool as hell. It almost made me forget that I walking to Sainsbury's with low battery, sunstroke and a report to write up instead I could have been on a white-washed porch by a lake with a beer in one hand and a pack of cards in the other. The album made me want to learn how to shuffle with one hand, throw a bullseye, toss a cocktail shaker around, dust off my grandad's piano stool, become an expert in the blues and dance. 1000 days to go seems enough time to learn a few tricks. A classic sherbet response I am sure. Muddy Waters at Newport, just felt powerful and proud and unapologetically unvarnished. Muddy Waters aka McKinley Morganfield - what a voice, what an artist. No wonder he is called "the father of modern blues". The album felt like a family - each clearly related, jostling and melding with each other. My fave tracks were: 'I'm your hoochie, coochie man'-a classic for a reason, 'I've got my mojo working pt.2' - for the love of the game, meanest woman - any song about a curly-haired baddie gotta be on there, 'soon forgotten' - if I'm pulling the Deniro grimace of approval another straight track to the list, Goodbye Newport blues - my favourite, just beautiful. Ironically, at the actual festival, this was apparently spontaneously written by leader of the Harlem Renaissance - James Mercer Langston Hughes - and performed by blues pianist Otis Spann. A fantastic first entry, what next?

Very nice jazzy vibe

Yea awesome

Very enjoyable. 4/5

Credited as one of the first live blues albums, Muddy Waters at the Newport Jazz Fest in 1960 changed how people saw the genre. It captured the raw energy that passes from the band to the crowd and inspired countless aspiring musicians to pick up a guitar or a harmonica (sometimes both!). It also stands on its own musical merits as a great collection of songs. The biggest issue with Newport is the recording itself being affected by wind, microphone crackle, static hiss, and other hiccups. Considering it was 1960 I'm willing to give it a pass. If you're a big blues fan you can add a full point to my score.

I should probably listen to more music like this, very nice.

My guy

This is what the blues should feel like. Theres a true swagger to this live record and the delivery is incredible throughout. The only criticism I'd have is that some of the tracks do sound quite similar and towards the second half of the album it blurs a bit. Still a brilliant listen though.

Listened while I chopped rhubarb and strawberries for a crisp. Wish I was there to hear this legend live. I listened to Lead Belly after this to go further back in time...

What a brilliant blues album, and you can really feel the live energy coming out of it. He plays for a great sound; the quality feels so passionate and real.

It's Muddy Waters. Pretty easy to crack a good rating from the name alone. Blues is unfortunately plagued by the fact that it all sounds almost exactly the same. Same keys, same instruments, same songwriting. But at least Muddy brings a bit of personality to an otherwise generic genre. And don't get me wrong, I love blues, but that's just how it is. Anyways, great listen. It seems any artist that plays 'At Newport' (wherever that is) seems to kill it.

I Got My Brand On You, Baby Please Don't Go, Tiger In Your Tank, I Feel So Good, I've Got My Mojo Workin' y Goodbye Newport Blues

Muddy . . . Chicago blues. Revered.

Very good.

I’m getting a bit tired of the live albums to be honest, but this one was pretty good.

I Got My Brand on You 4 I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man 4.2 Baby, Please Don't Go 4.3 Soon Forgotten 3.8 Tiger in Your Tank 3.8 I Feel So Good 4 Got My Mojo Working 4.3 Got My Mojo Working, Part 2 4.3 Goodbye Newport Blues 4 Score: 4.077777778

This is a really good blues album. My problem with blues is more with the genre in general - all the songs sound very similar.

lets goo 4/5

A solid sampler of Muddy Waters catalog allowed his band and he to shine, although some aspects of what made him great go missing. As a singer, Waters has an authoritative voice that never needs to go to screams, whoops and talking to deliver his message. Only Otis Redding comes to mind as a singer whose natural voice carries the power of Waters. His vocals make classics like “Hoochie Coochie Man” go well beyond blues’ cliches, or even novelty songs. The only drawback arises when Waters’ utters submissive lines like in “Baby, Please Don’t Go.” There seems little chance that he would “be your dog” to any woman.” Waters definitely could put a “Tiger in Your Tank” long before any type of groveling. Pianist Otis Spann and Drummer Francis Clay’s accents add a great deal to the songs. Their playing drives the music whereas terrific musicians like guitarist Pat Hare and harmonica player James Cotton seem undermiked. Waters’ slide playing emerged on a few tracks, but he also did not get to thrive. The recording leaves out some of the dynamics that made Waters' recordings more dramatic. I missed the famed Chess Studio effects that added drama to his performances. The live setting does boost “I Got My Mojo Working.” Spann’s sprightly piano intro, the call and response from numerous back-up singers and the accelerating rhythm turn “Mojo” into a gospel flavored song. It seems fitting that the group decided to reprise the song as Waters sensed the spirit hitting the audience. It would have been wiser to end the album on that note rather than the improvised “Goodbye Newport Blues.” Better Waters’ albums exist, but At Newport 1960 offers a great introduction to listeners.

Recognizable blues tunes that Muddy just smoked on.

Muddy did it well, and a huge influence to blues and rock that followed.

About as authentic of the Blues as it gets. Tight in the pocket and downtrodden.

raw live blues is a vibe. Not for everyday, but for special occasions.

Enjoyed this. Didn't get Tiger in your tank but otherwise great

Excellent

Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: I Feel So Good Date listened: 2/06/26 Listen when: Reading a book in the evening in a candlelit room I LOVE LIVE ALBUMS. I Feel So Good best hands down. Imagine being in that room wow. Feels like a genuine blues 44 minute 41 second experience. (Goodbye Newport Blues honourable mention). 4/5 because listening beginning to end can get a bit monotonous as they all really do sound the same. Also not sure it's something I would listen to every day.

I had already heard this album, and now i think i liked it even more. Another live album, now the crowd was more civilized, but it was still there, it helped. So yes, great album, would listen again. man i love the blues

Loved it, really starting to get into Jazz

Legendary artist. Legendary festival. Legendary set. Enough said.

Opinion: This album completely unlocked the world of Blues for me <3 <3 Favorite songs: (1) Got my mojo working (2) Baby, please don't go (3) I Got my brand on you Overall Album rating (Pitchfork rating system): 8.9/10

blues is good for kicking your feet up after a long day of standing on the job and feeling the ache wail out. live, Muddy Waters excels even more. i quite like the ripping and facemelting (for 1960 ofc) Tiger in Your Tank. deserves to be one of the 1001? i think this a good representation for Muddy Waters, who absolutely deserves a spot on this list

So fun, I would love to hang out with my friends and dance to this music it’s so fun!!

love the jazzy and fun vibe of it. feels like pure music back in the days

Awesome. 4/5

Very good as an historical record of where guitar-based rock music began. It was also a little bit too basic and not something I would want to revisit often. I feel four stars is fair.

The raw, authentic sound of the black blues. Which can be sometimes a bit rigid and predictable, but also very powerful and emotional. 7/10

I Feel So Good best, hands down. Imagine being in that room wow. Feels like a genuine blues 44 minute 41 second experience. (Goodbye Newport Blues honourable mention)

Love this… I do prefer any of the Motörhead live versions of Hoochie Coochie Man 😁

This is the blues. I could listen to this over and over.

According to the Wikipedia this was the album that inspired all the electric blues-based rock bands that came out of the 60s and 70s, so based on the idea alone that it’s worth seeking the roots, this is a must-listen. It’s also a very good listen in its own right. Muddy Waters himself sounds great, he has an excellent band that strikes that exact right combination of musicianship with the looseness that comes from knowing exactly what you’re doing, and the crowd seems very appreciative of it. It would have been great to be in that room.

Nice enough, ikek meget baggrundsstøj. Forskellige numre. Den er røget på min playliste

Listening from the context of 1960, these is some raunchy sounds. I respect it. It’s like the canvas the rest of rock n roll painted on.

The album that launched a thousand blues white boys.

If you like rock and roll, you have to give the old blues men their flowers. You can hear Muddy Waters raw energy and the crowd having fun with it too. Many of these songs are standards now.

I enjoyed this album, quite an easy listening type of album.

Absolutos temazos. Doutra época, pero que ben sonan.

This album is basically straight blues. It is the pure blues sound distilled into one live album. Passionate love songs, twangy guitars, and fast-paced piano give this genre it's distinctive sound. Roughly all of the country and rock from about 1965 onward to 1977 was influenced by this album and Muddy Waters to some degree. That makes this album a classic. Yet, for all its influence, it's not hugely interesting to listen to. Most of the songs, while good, sound nearly identical to each other. I understand why this album is good, and it is a great blues album, but it's tied to the blues and therefore beholden to the flaws of that genre. Time has kind of passed this album by in respect to its ability to keep the listener engaged.

I love Muddy Waters so of course I enjoyed this one a lot too. I never know what to write for those live albums tho. It's just a good vibe!

Really good! Deep enough sound to be moving yet still something you could easily put on.

It's pretty clear this is a great album

[album #6] i liked this one a lot. i would have never listened to this without this project and im glad i found it. classic blues music, still great to listen to 66 years later. 4/5

Amazing Blues and live to boot

Fantastic blues album. Awesome voice and guitar. Not my favorite genre but probably my favorite expression of it. Would listen again to get in a southern / blues mood. 4

Bluseale hoochie coochie

Muddy was such a talented blues guitarist. This album’s a really good reminder of how much ground he covered with what sounds simple on paper. Nothing fancy for the sake of it, just great playing, a ton of feel, and that kind of presence where he sounds completely in control the whole time. You can really hear how guys like Muddy ended up influencing so many British artists later on, the Beatles, the Stones, Clapton, all of them. That blues foundation is all over so much of that music. Favorite song: "I Got My Brand on You"

Great blues album

classic enjoyable blues from an all time master. Still sounds great 66 years on. Can really hear how all the white blues artists in UK and US stole and profited from the black artists

This is a delight. So much energy. What a show that must have been to be at!

This was very good. Hearing energetic live albums from this period, with the audience getting more and more into it as the set goes on, is just a fun experience. Not quite a 5 for me, but a very good 4.

I like his sound a lot (heard some of his other work), but I didn’t find this live album the best for the majority of the songs. But DANG he’s got talent.

SOO fun. What a great live album. The skill is palpable

A really enjoyable blues album!

Pure blues. It being a live album injected so much energy and aliveness into this one. Loved loved loved.

Great groves, great songs, great energy, great Blues.

This is a great blues album, a bit more uptempo than a lot of blues.

Oh good. Yeah! Delta blues! 4 stars just for the feeling. Boolean rating: yes, absolutely! ❤️

What a legend. Just crushing it on a live blues album.

This is an absolutely fantastic album. High energy old school electric blues that does not let up.

Honestly not bad. I was grooving to the blues

I was already familiar with Muddy Waters and this album. It's some really good electric blues. It is clear to see how much this influenced many artists who came later. I would listen to this again for sure.

The OG Chicago Blues Man. This is a party I wish I was at. The blues just make me feel better.

Legendary songs, I don't know if I will listen to these specific versions again, but I will listen to these songs again, for sure.

Leuk, ontspannend

Super!!

I like Muddy Waters when the time is right.

The roots of rock n roll.

I'm never going to say no to Muddy Waters, and to a live album at that; never! Though its not the absolute best version of him, its the beginning of so much modern live jazz. He's an incredible musician, and just lets the songs flow into each other. Not too long, crowd is great, his voice is just unbelievable. A joy and a honor to listen to.

Blues can sometimes feel too structurally repetitive for me, but Muddy Waters at Newport earns its reputation for me with the caveat that the B Side does most of the heavy lifting. The sheer energy on the second half of this album salvages a fairly middling Side A for me.

Love the songs - didn't think these were the most exciting recordings of them, but still almost gave this a 5.

Made me feel like I was in a saloon from way back when. I liked it

Oh hell yes, this is a pure blues masterclass. Must-listen #329.

The influence of this man is beyond comprehension. Amazing album, the live album even works for him. Starting to doubt the transitivity of my scores by now, but let’s make it a 4/5.

Not much into blues, but this is a great album

Pretty good. Great college football coach and even better musician

A bluesy delight. I'm not usually a fan of live albums, it's more energetic, but the mix can sometimes be a little wonky. This did a really good job of splitting it down the middle. I honestly appreciated this one more than the other Muddy Waters album I've been exposed to so far. All in all, this one was really enjoyable.

This was about a blues as blues gets. Enjoyed the fact that he got done with a song, asked the crowd if they wanted to hear it again, they said yes, and the band played it again. That's how you satisfy your fans.

1960 was a time when blues and country were good. That stopped being the case around the 2000s. There's so much energy on "At Newport 1960" packed into a 32 min album. Every song on it was great, even at its lowest. I guess that proves live albums are sometimes good. 4 stars for "At Newport 1960".

Love this. Crackling with energy

You have to like blues, but I do. It's got such a gorgeous sound. It may not be the type of person to want a Blues collection, but I am the type that appreciates it in an authentic way. It makes me want to do hard labor and drink whiskey though.

Cannot say that I know a lot about the Blues greats such as Muddy Waters. But I do know that most of my musical heroes say that they were influenced by them. So it stands to reason that a lot of the music I truly value would never exist without the Blues. My favourite Blues track is Mannish Boy written by Muddy Waters but this does not feature on this live album. But there are plenty of Blues standards on it, full of some great guitar licks with that familiar Blues riff throughout. All of which make it a classic album. 4/5 9/4/26

Very good sound. Feels like it would be perfect for drinks and live music. Songs feel repetitive at times but still have a nice groove.

Love the Muddy blues!

A bit repetitive but good groove

I enjoyed this album. Muddy Waters is clearly a huge influence on American music. The sound is multi layered and works harmoniously. It is Earthy and complex. Muddy Waters voice isn't smooth and polished like later blues musicians that were popular when I was growing up. But it feels real and grounded. I am trying to decide if I like the live album aspect of this. I think it brings some energy which may affect the performance. It also feels distracting to the music itself. But listening to the extra tracks on the rereleased version, I do feel there is something more grounded in the live versions of the songs.
