Reviews (page 4 of 12)
you just know this would've ate live. a hootin and hollerin good time.
Leuk, Amé vond het bijzonder
classic!
only listened to the first one, have never really gotten into blues very much but i love. will be listening more and try to finish this album.
I liked his voice - the sound of it and emotion when he sang - and liked the instrumentals. Definitely sounded dated, but in a good way.
Blues de respeito, não é melhor guitarrista que um bb king, mas é ótimo tbm. Hoochie Coochie guy é bom dms
I'm usually not a fan of live albums. But I am a big fan or Muddy Waters. These songs have great lyrics delivered with great showmanship and great melody.
Lots of songs I recognize performed well. This is probably the second Muddy Waters album I've listened to (after Electric Mud). This is better.
SCRUMPTIOUS. Delicious blues and jazz tunes. Even found some songs to add to my swing dancing dj set list. Love it! 8/10
It is a smooth album, soft 60's blues
It was what a Blues album should be. Not my genre. I would listen to it again. 4/5
Straightforward Muddy goodness, really not much you can say but why would you need to? A passionate, joyful, and near-effortless grasp of the fundamentals of the Blues.
Great Album! Is say 7.5/10
Got to love a solid blues album and this is a classic. Unlike a lot of blues which seems designed to focus the listener on the playing, Muddy Waters guitar work is understated and unshowy, part of the structure that exists for his vocal delivery. Sounds fairly simple and basic in a lot of ways, yet it’s how tight and solid the whole band are that sells this for me
this is the backbone of music
I enjoyed this quite a lot. At one point I was even making a cup of tea, bobbing and swaying to the rhythm in the kitchen. It did help the I really like a different cover of I've Got My Mojo Working by Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, although to be fair, despite the fact I love that song, I didn't really need to hear it twice in a row - that was a bizarre choice. We've had a few live albums now, and I think I'm still standing by the opinion that I'd rather hear a studio version of the same songs than a live one on a project like this. That being said, these are some skilled musicians and the live setting shows that off. Extremely pleasant music to tap your foot to that I want to give 3.5, but I am going to round up as I like it more than a 3 4/5
Amazing performances of some classic tunes.
Muddy is altijd goed! Dit live optreden en selectie van nummers is prima. De laatste 4 nummers zijn anders. Luistert prima weg
pretty good, live recordings aren't as heavy but still good
Great live blues album Standout songs: Baby, please dont go Tiger in your tank Ive got my mojo working
A national treasure.
Muddy Waters is just that guy.
Está cool, me gusta que se grabó en el 60 y está incluido en la canción (significa que hay un at newport 1961???)
1er album de blues enregistré en live, d’après certains. Rouler l’été avec ça c’est la solution.
Really didn't need Mojo part 2, but still a pretty good album.
Now THIS is some solid blues and mixed to perfection. My only note which is obvious to everyone I am sure - cut the second mojo part 2, blues is repetitive enough so we don't need a double dose
This album makes me want to go back and revise my review for the Eric Clapton blues album. This is what blues should sound like and was a great Sunday afternoon listening.
4/5
Didn't expect to like this as much as I did!
A classic genre for me but it ain’t no Led Zeppelin if you know what I mean
this album is pretty cool and fun
Very fun piece of rock and roll history. Founding members of British rock groups like the Rolling Stones, Cream and Fleetwood Mac went to concerts just like this one, apparently. It would have been a very fun show to attend.
3.5
Reminds me of Blues Night @ The Cellar with my best bud. Good ol' classic Chicago blues.
Love it! Typically blues isn’t my thing but this had such good energy and emotion. Would’ve loved to been there live, too.
Awesome!
I’m no blues expert, but I know Muddy Waters was one of the greats. I liked this album well enough, though it didn’t get me particularly excited. Off of a pure listening experience, I’d give it 3.5, but I’m rounding up given the clear influence this had on so many of my favorite artists from the 70s.
Just outstanding. The live recording, the staples, the remakes, the artistry. Amazing artist in his prime. Worth seeking out and listening to more than once. 4+
Fantastic live recording! Lots of energy. I can hear why folks were dancing in the aisles by the end of it, really historic show. The playing is just phenomenal, and reading that the final song was written on the spot is just the cherry on top of it.
Excellent.
Solid stuff here
Admired it more than loved it.
This was really good and I enjoyed the voice, the guitar, the harmonica and the emotion. There wasn't anything super sad, but the emotions still seeped through. I even enjoyed the live aspect of this album.
I don't especially like blues but I like it when Muddy Waters does it. Mojo Workin (both parts) were my favorites. Great live energy! I had a cat named Mojo. But his full name was Moseph Joseph.
This was a fun live album. I really loved the last Muddy album we had and was hoping for a similar reaction with this one. It didn’t hit me with as much energy and soul as the last one but it was still a good time. Solid rockin’ blues.
When you find out this is your album of the day, you think to yourself, "Everything, everything, is gonna be all right this morning." Even though "Manish Boy" is not on it. While I am a Howlin' Wolf partisan if I had to use a Chess Blues artist, Muddy, of course, is a very close second and this is a great showcase for him.
I have heard of Muddy Waters before, and may have even heard several of these tracks in the past. Not sure how often I would return to the blues but it hit well today..
fine ass blues
I think i’ll go ahead and throw away my compilations and just get this album. It has everything you need from Waters.
Great blues album. Goodbye Newport Blues was my fav song and first listen of the album with I've Got My Mojo Working and Soon Forgotten being my other highlights
Second live album in three days but this is much better. Template setting blues rock from Mr Muddy
бодро, живо, душевно. не думала что проникнусь жанром. альбом понравился! виртуозный. любимая песня: tiger in your tank. пойдёт для сэмпла . ещё подцепила классное словечко из песни "i've got my mojo working". mojo — энергия успеха, личная харизма, магическая сила или удача. так что, друзья, не теряйте своё моджо.
Something different. In that I don’t really listen to this sort of music . But I did enjoy it
Yay I’ve got the blues!
I have several muddy waters records but I have not heard this before. A thing to remember with Muddy Waters is he sounds like a lot of other blues musicians because they were copying him. You notice this with a lot of really influential musicians that seem to be very standard but that’s only because no one else sounded like them before and they set that standard. Especially with genres like blues that become stylistically rigid as new generations start to copy the greats in later years. The version I pulled up has 4 studio recordings after the end of the show which are all tracks that they played live and the live set is so much more energetic, and the studio tracks are no slouch job. The studio tracks are excessive but we’re not judging the album on that. I’d give this a mid rating based on hearing it today after listening to so much that is derivative of it, but I’ll rate it as if I were hearing it in the early 60s instead.
Oldie but goodie. Classic old-school blues
Classic blues from a master of the genre. Energy. Great recording. 4
What's not to like? If it ain't broke..etc. Classic blues
Straight down yer pipe blues and in many ways preferable to the 60s later "iterations" that just popped up from Janis and the Stones. But for a live album Newport crowd be a bit like the prawn sandwich brigade, the rattling their jewelry crew compared to some of the earlier albums from Apollo/Regal/Mister Kelleys.
A good album, I liked I Feel So Good and I got my Mojo Working the most.
Mood: Wild, swinging, free, a great sense of confidence. It's easy to see how Muddy Waters has influenced bands like the Rolling Stones. Fun tremolo on the harmonica, and sweeping runs on the piano. Melodies have a fun, almost lazily meandering attitude.
This was a lot of fun to listen to. The history behind it is amazing and makes you appreciate it more.
Very nice blues. Not the best quality recording, but it is easy and fun.
I liked this but it’s too repetitive Favourites: Baby, Please Don’t Go I Feel So Good
Muddy Waters, At Newport 1960 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Album #19. Big blues fan. I love the early blues musicians, especially the 1920s originators. Not so much this more modern version, but I’m still a big fan of this kind of music. I’d never listened to this album before. I don’t tend to gravitate towards Muddy Waters that much. He doesn’t necessarily have my favourite voice in blues, although I fully admit he’s a complete legend and incredibly influential. I prefer the growl of Howlin’ Wolf or the grittiness of Son House and Blind Willie Johnson. But we’re reviewing a Muddy Waters album here. It’s a class set. Amazingly well recorded and produced. I love how the crowd get more and more into it as it goes on. It becomes livelier and more exciting, and Muddy even loosens up towards the end, especially on Got My Mojo Working, which is my favourite track here. He’s almost just making noises at certain points. There’s something so sinister about this type of music. Singing about having your “brand” on someone is just nasty. His band is insane as well. The piano playing from Otis Spann is unbelievable. And I don’t think anyone does that slow 12 bar drawl quite like Muddy Waters. So yeah, this is a very strong four. As a product of its time, maybe it’s even a five. It’s so well recorded and just a really enjoyable listen if you’re into this kind of music. Another new discovery for me, my fourth in a row.
Still a fun listen 60+ years later
Excellent live music.
So good.
Good stuff
I believe I had wartime flashbacks to the live version of Duke Ellington at Newport and it being almost 2 hours. I was elated to see that this was about 45 minutes and I truly enjoyed the music! Maybe I’m softening up to jazz haha.
Is it in stereo, though?
This is exactly what you would want to use as a descriptor of “blues”.
Liked getting live and studio versions of a few tracks at once.
Really good album, You can tell how amazing Muddy is as a performer. He is really the king of the blues in the first half of the century. Shoutout "Tiger In Your Tank" which is so ahead of its time for 1960. 4/5
Amazing how studio stuff and live tracks have such little variation. Very tight live band.
Awesome album. Even better when you read about what was happening to the artists and how they handled that adversity.
all of the songs sound very similar, still a funky album with good vibes tho
Blues at it's finest.
Sheesh! Blues at it's best in my book
Very much enjoyed this!
Great Blues album 👍
Great blues record, vocals are recorded very well. Overall the mix is a bit overpowered with harmonica. Absolute classic
Great album. I've heard plenty of blues, including Muddy, so thought it would be a snoozefest, but this live performance takes it to another level. If nothing else, get a load of what the backing band is doing. Phenomenal.
Ok, to mi je bl všeč k Hooker včer. Cel vajb mi bolj sede, komadi so mi so far bolj všečni, niso si mi med sabo tok podobni. "Tiger In Your Tank" mi je najljubši do zdaj. Ok, "Got My Mojo Working" je fakin insane. Oh, it's a two parter! Sm že mislila, da sm ponesreč dala na repeat. Zadnji, "Goodbye Newport Blues", pa ubere velik bolj chill ritem in lepo počasi zaključi album.
Pretty good, would listen again. Pretty sure this has inspired many of Kenan's skits on SNL.
Enjoyed it every note.
Not a bluesman, but I liked it.
Oh man this is killer. And live! In the days before overdubbing and clean ups. A master and his craft!
Starts a little politely- maybe due to the Newport audience of 1960. But really gets smoking midway through. Maybe not where I would start but worth a listen.
Really nice blues. Wanted to listen to this type of music for long time
Classic Chicago blues. ‘Nuff said.
1/29/26: Classic material right there. 7/10
7/10
Point in time, yet timeless classic stuff. Man on the Mt. Rushmore of American blues for sure. Great sound, pace and flow. Can’t go less than a 4 here.
To be a fly in the mud for this show would’ve been cool. Really dig the way this paces. Slow and soulful to warm up the crowd, gradually building to some rousing moments. The piano also gives these renditions a nice touch. Enjoyable listen for sure.
Loved the “Newport” versions of these songs. Just a little dialed back but still b’s deep in the pocket.
What does it mean to put a tiger in your tank? Love stuff was solid. Crazy how good the recording was (especially his voice) for 1960. Back to back this is just some solid blues. 3.75
Rounding up on cool-factor alone... 3.5/5
Ya like blues?
A rollicking set, full of energy and atmosphere. But the now customary marks off for a live album that’s not a re-imagining.
Blues 101
While I haven’t been especially impressed by most of the live albums on this list, and I don’t typically listen to much blues because it can start to feel repetitive, 'At Newport 1960' truly stands apart. Muddy Waters’ performance is absolutely incredible. Blues may be rooted in simplicity, but when an artist can command the crowd in a live setting and pair that presence with unparalleled guitar skill, it elevates the music beyond genre and turns it into something unforgettable.
4.5 meer leaning naar een 5. Een van de grootste in Blues ooit en het is duidelijk waarom. Vet all the way through
Het blijft een stijl waarin elk nummer ongeveer hetzelfde is, maar goed, deze nummers komen ook wel uit de jaren 50. Deze opname is verder echt waanzinnig. Wat een band.
A work of art. One of the greatest live albums ever. Love it.
What is it with the Newport Jazz Festival? Four years earlier, the audience was provoked into a near-riot by a Paul Gonsalves saxophone solo and the night before this performance they had to call in the National Guard with tear gas and water hoses because the crowd got unruly during a Ray Charles performance. The sense of danger audible in the Ellington concert isn't present, but the crowd is lively and the music is terrific. Highlights are Muddy's voice, deep as mud and sweet as honey; Otis Spann's tinkling roadhouse piano (absolutely sensational, and a sign I need to look into some of his recordings); James Cotton's harmonica; and a general earthy vibe that just feels good. My favorite song is oddly the one that Muddy isn't front and center on. Otis Spann's singing on the Langston Hughes-penned closer, "Goodbye Newport Blues" is unforgettable, a voice that carries every bit of his history and every step he's taken. Probably more than any other genre, the blues that really hinges on the emotional expression of the singer. There is no room for testing your octave range or showing off with melisma. Emotional expression is lost among modern pop recordings, since everything has to sound perfect now. I hope people are doing this exercise and listening to early music are appreciating the way music used to be performed and recorded, even with all it's imperfections and self-indulgences. It's becoming more and more of a lost art form.
7 - GOOD
I just love that you can hear Muddy and the audience both loosen up to each other over the course of 30 minutes. This music does feel incredibly dated and simplistic now, but to know this is the source material for so much of what comes after is awesome. Everyone should hear this record and learn a bit about its historical context, even if they aren’t massive blues fans.
I'm not a big fan of the blues, but this is great! I love the energy on Got My Mojo Working.
Okay, we can admit that a lot of blues songs sound kinda alike, and Waters' selections here do not do justice to the real range of his music like, say The Best of Muddy Waters (1958), which is a phenomenal album. I find this live performance a great illustration of how much Waters' voice and delivery matter for his music. Just like a comedian can find a rhythm and timing that makes a bit all their own, Waters has a distinctive sound that is compelling even when he literally plays the same song twice in a row.
Many people more educated on the blues can speak to this albums influence both good and bad (old white guy in black jeans and a hat playing "Hoochie Coochie Man" at your local county fair). I just love how this sounds. The musicianship is incredible especially the piano which is in my opinion what makes this so great. I hope there are more Muddy Waters albums on here (and I wish one was by Redman).
I haven't really delved much into this genre. This is what I imagine the American South sounds like. Very yeehaw type shit. It was a calm start but it got progressively fun. Super enjoyable, but the genre isn't really a favorite of mine tbh.
Surprised af by how much I loved this
Great blues album, every song is good and makes for a good straight through listen. Kind of crazy this is a live album from 1960 because the recording quality is good.
I’m just a sucker for Chicago blues, it’s just a great vibe listening to this and the live experience adds to that vibe. The version I listened to had some bonus studio tracks which subverts the norm of having bonus live tracks on a studio album.
I liked it, it was fun background music for the drive
Raw jazz. Unrefined. Vintage. You can feel it's Influential to lot modern tunes.
As a Chicagoan who is also a musician, I can't believe I've never listened to a Muddy Waters album straight through. You can tell here just by listening that he basically invented Chicago blues, it sounds so perfectly aligned to what I know about the genre (which is, probably not enough).
I'm not intimately familiar with this genre, but some artists are immediately apparent as being a cut above, regardless of how familiar you are. I think I need more of this in my life.
I imagine this is one of the albums all those Brits (Page, Clapton, etc.) were listening to back when they were starting rock bands. I can see why they started adopting this kind of blues to their uses. It's great music!
As a Chicago resident, I probably shouldn't have such a surface knowledge of blues music, but I do. I had never heard this and I thought it was a rollicking good time. He's got a super cool voice. Like the Stones album we listened to earlier in this list, that first song hasn't aged well.
4/5 - I've heard this one before a few times, and I really enjoy it. I'm not always on board with the live albums for the list, but this one works. Legendary voice of Chicago Blues.
It doesn't get muddier than this...
I probably need to listen to this while driving to give it more attention. I'm sure I missed great stuff from Otis Spahn and James Cotton. I just don't have a great attention span for 12 bar but it's obviously historical. I'm going 4 stars because I know I'm not giving it it's due today.
I don’t love a live album but this is a good one
after listening to the anthology, this is a nice overview of muddy waters; 4 stars
I'm a white guy evaluating the blues, so take this with a grain of salt ... I love the blues and this isn't really the style I go for. I don't typically prefer full band, electric blues for a few reasons that aren't worth digging into. That being said, MW does it better than basically anyone ever on this record. I appreciate how each band member has their own groove and feel. And if I were a square folky in 1960 I would have lost my mind at this gig (you can hear the crowd going berserk in some songs, which is pretty great). So overall, not my favorite flavor but I still enjoyed it and I can't deny the craft.
An electric performance - so thrilling a delivery of what has become the most tired sound in music that it still stands out and demands attention. It's hard to hear this as anything other than the tempalte, the generic form, the seed from which rock and roll boomed, the sound a billion guitar guys have been riffing on and ripping off, iterating and paying homage to over for the next 65 years with huge degrees of creative success. His guitar playing is solid but not as great as some of the other blues-rock transitional figures, the vocals are really the most amazing bit: rich, emotive, drawing on a deep resonance to power through, breaking engagingly, wraping the voice around the phrases, pushing out the lines and wails. The band sounds great too - the jazzy piano tinkling especially.
One of the OGs (technically Patton, House, and Johnson are but Muddy is nearly there). Just for what he gave us and who he influenced he gets 4 stars. Plus this sounds damn good for being a live recording from 1960. That would have been amazing to see live.
I really have been enjoying these live blues albums even if they don't contain a lot that I throw in a playlist. Love that new-to-me expression "put a tiger in your tank" what a golden old person thing to say.
Great to have this pristine document of a historic concert. Well paced and builds nicely throughout the set. 4
The blues always make me FEEL somethin’. I love knowing that this was an album that helped influence the merging of American blues with British blues (early Fleetwood Mac!) Something about a harmonica x steel guitar combo
Imagine hearing this in concert in 1960.
Not bad. The recording isn't that great, which overshadows the performances here.
i got my brand on you live - 4.5 / 10 i’m your hoochie coochie man live - 5/10 baby please don’t go live - 8/10 soon forgotten live - 5/10 tiger in your tank live - 6/10 i feel so good live - 7/10 ive got my mojo working live - 6/10 i’ve got my mojo working pt. 2 live - 6/10 goodbye newport blues live - 8/10 meanest woman - 7/10 overall my take on the album is that it is an incredible display of chicago blues! after finding out that he was a major influence for blues becoming mainstream i now appreciate this album more. the instrumental dynamic is incredible and live vocals arguably more powerful than studio version. overall album rating : 6.3 / 10
Really enjoyed this album. Will definitely be listening again.
The heart of the Newport folk lifestyle directly to your ears in 2026.
This sounded like chocolate covered butter
A masterclass in the blues
Excellent, of course. The sound isn’t perfect, I suppose, but it’s not bad for a live album. Some of the patter gets a little old on repeat listens. But the music sure doesn’t.
No skips! Best with noise cancellation headphones/earphones just to get the full feel of everything. Classic in Blues and an inspiration in Rock. Need more music like this
Unreal. Reminded me of watching Sinners and the impact music has so many years later. True soulfulness. Gets a little stale as it goes on but short and sweet, an impressive amount of musicality in 45 mins. 3.5 stars
Love the Blues <3
muy bueno para empezar, realmente me gusto mucho escuchar ese tipo de musica ya que me sali mucho de lo que suelo escuchar
I’ve never been a huge blues/jazz fan, but this kinda slapped! I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this album.
Overall rating by me: 8,5/10 Songs added to the playlist: ,,Goodbye Newport Blues (Live)", ,,I Got My Brand On You", ,,Meanest Woman" Notes: Genuinely, you can never miss with jazz created by people of color. Fenomenal voice and a classy tune. If I ever make a jazz playlist, the whole album surely will be there.
Oh my god, Muddy Waters voice is incredible. The band is amazing. My one problem with this, and it's a biggun, is that I can't hear his fucking guitar. Why is it mixed in the far right channel so quietly? The other instruments are so loud by comparison it's like the guitar solos just don't exist. I didn't even notice the second guitar until Got My Mojo Workin'. Other than that, this is a perfect live album, and in my opinion this comes close to being the gold standard for blues.
Consistently good but it’s the blues so can be samey
A groundbreaking album. Apart from Muddy Waters vocals, you have Pat Hare on guitar, with that overdriven distorted sound and Otis Span on keyboards.
Another really good album. I like this type of mysin though I don't listen to it often. I like when records and albums are live performances.
bluesy
This is a 4.5 and close to a 5. Unlike Allman Bros, this is perfect blues.
Light 4
forever the goat
good I liked voodoo bit this was a nice and fun. I would listen to this on my own time
This was an album which recognized the hand in hand quality of jazz and blues. Jazz music often has several instruments playing different notes which work together to create a sound with the musicians improvising and then returning to the melody, while blues almost always has a vocalist providing the emotional expression through the melody and lyrics, and this album was a great representative of that sound. Sometimes the lyrics were too repetitive for my taste, but the varying sounds of the instruments saved this album from getting boring.
Day 137 Enjoyed this a lot, blues is a genre I’d never given much of a chance to, it’s so much more fun than I would have thought 8/10 Highlights Got my brand on you Got my mojo working
Loved the blues
This is true music.
Great album, usually I don't enjoy live albums but this was great.
This was some boppin blues. It sounded great live and had a lot of heart in it. The riffs rocked and the vibes were awesome. I'd listen again!
Really enjoyed this album, reminded me a lot of B.B. King
Good ole fashioned blues, baby
Interestingggg
zimmer aufräumen, duschen und gute laune
Not typically something I listen to but it was quite enjoyable. Waters puts on a performance that is nothing short of electric by the time you get to “Got My Mojo Working (1 and 2.)” I like the performance’s progression as the band and audience’s energy build off of each other with each song. Waters bids the audience farewell lamenting about his potential musical legacy in the soulful “Goodbye Newport Blues.” It was interesting to compare the live and recorded versions of several songs and noticing the stylistic differences.
This is what I think of when I think of blues Would have a very fun time if I was in Newport in 1960
got my foot tapping, and I really enjoyed the experience. Would buy the record if I came across it and would therefore definitely play it again. good classic blues. 4 stars
Meanest Woman fave song EASILY but I love jazz music so much so I had a blast with this entire album (especially because there were some live performances in here... I love live albums... I feel like they have so much more heart in them.) Definitely a singer I'll be throwing on more often from now on.
so fun, felt like i was in new orleans
Went down lovely like a cup of Yorkshire tea in the morning
God gammal delta blues, muddy waters er OG
Oh wow wow hutchi ku
3.5/5 Would have danced my absolute pants off at this show. Fun and sexy. Repetition and deep yearning. Blue blue blue, baby.
Very good if only a bit repetitive
A very influential blues live album from the legend himself. While I wasn't fw the part 2 of GMMW, I thought everything else was pretty good. Remastered version added a bunch of random tracks at the end so there was that too.
Maybe one day someone will ask me about muddy waters but probably not. Muddy Waters was so influential to a bunch of blues rock that I enjoy much more than his stuff, but that being said this album was really good. This must’ve blown the pants off the people that bought this record. If you owned this, you at least used to be cool. Anyway muddy waters is a crazy stage name. Great branding, this dude got it. Feeling the strongest won’t revisit score 4/5
Great blues album . Surprising that it’s live . Only down side is that it’s a bit Samey but that’s the blues .
Don't always like live albums but this one is pretty good. The longer it goes on the more I am enjoying this album. You could say it makes me Feel So Good. The Encore of Mojo was brilliant as well! Tiger in your Tank and Baby Please don't Go the highlights, as well as Mojo Working.
Chicago blues, everything sounds like it has a little snare drum sizzle on it, which is perfect. I also love the <whatever that lips sound is called> in Got My Mojo Working
Mojo-tastic!
This was good. Blusey and fun.
Really enjoyed this album. I’ve always been a casual fan of muddy waters but loves the power of his voice and this performance. Can’t believe this was 1960- sounds so much fresher than a lot of what was happening at the time.
I liked it!
Muddy Waters is a true original. A classic in the best sense of the term. I like this album.
Amazing name, alright album. Liked the general vibe of it and the fact it was a live album but didn’t give me much more than that. Specific rating - 4.1 Fav song- Baby , Please don’t go Least fav- got my mojo working
Blues songs can sound a bit samey, but that's of little consequence when the sound is as powerful as this. There's phenomenal energy in this performance which almost compels you to listen and get swept up alongside the crowd's evident and raucous delight.
Must waters is always fantastic. This one isn't my very favorite, but it's still great
Any way you slice it Muddy is just so easy to enjoy and this performance is spirited. Based on the man’s extensive catalog the setlist could’ve been better but he certainly makes it work. That said, Coochie Man and Baby Please Don’t Go back to back are awesome and the version of I Got My Mojo Working feels legendary. Another one I should add to the nice to have vinyl list.
bocatto di cardinale
Not my favorite blues, but Muddy Waters is such a trailblazer and the live album was fun
I parties my ass off in Rhode Island during that concert.
Exceptional sounding recording
Real Blues. This happened in the lull between Rock n Roll and the Beatles. Should have been much more prominent. The flaw is probably the lack of variety - three takes of one song and a saminess feel. But the voice is great and the sound is perfect.
Simple but sometimes it really just hits the spot (3.5/5)
I like but don't love this, but I love so much music that it obviously influenced.
I love the blues, and Muddy Waters is one of the best. Unfortunately a lot of this feels like a slightly restrained version of the blues, recorded in the afternoon to be recorded and easily consumed. Only later on does he seem to open. What I really want to hear is the concert I imagine he played in the club that evening, with smoke and bourbon, where he let himself go.
4.5 stars
The best live album I've had so far. Very enjoyable, great voice.
Très quali mais pas forcément mon style
Enjoyable listen…you can’t go wrong with Muddy Waters 😁
Not my favorite, but not my least favorite either. Again, a very very specific type of mood, in my opinion. While I wouldn't say that these songs are good for casual listening (in my opinion), I think they would be pretty cool to learn how to play in a band. Lots of room for bluesy creativity that would really "wow" an audience!
Any good Rock n Roll fan knows its just repackaged blues. I had never listened to Muddy Waters before, that was a mistake. An excellent singer and guitar player. Can't forget your roots.
Very good blues album, I had an Eric Clapton "blues" album yesterday, and you can really hear the difference. This one sounds sooooo much more authentic and from the heart. Mid 4.
Old-school Blues? Count me in. I Got My Brand On You - 9/10. Classic Blues music. They style is a bit repetitive, but it fits the style. Great Blues by one of the all-timers. I'm Your Hooche Coochie Man - 10/10. I've heard covers of this that are more upbeat, but I prefer this one. Baby, Please Don't Go - 9/10. Simple and clean. The simplicity gives the musicians nowhere to hide a mistake. But these guys don't need to. Soon Forgotten - 8/10. Incredible piano playing in the background. I want to make sure that gets noted in my listening notes, but the rest of it is so good that it might get missed. Tiger In Your Tank - 8/10. More upbeat and jazzy. Damn, but this man is outstanding. I Feel So Good - 9/10. There's not much more I can say than to say that I know how much effort it takes to sound this effortless. I've Got My Mojo Working - 10/10. Classic Blues. Muddy Waters is one of the best at it. Goodbye Newport Blues - 8/10. Clean and excellent. Overall Rating: 4.44/5 (8.88/10). Perfection isn't when there's nothing to add, it's when there's nothing to take away.
Solid listen
Blues isn’t really my thing, but I enjoyed this.
Super loose and gritty. Great renditions of classic Muddy songs. The shuffle drums and sloppy piano along with Muddy's vocals create a laidback atmosphere. Favorite songs: I Got My Brand on You, Tiger in Your Tank, I Got My Mojo Working Pt. 2 (epic instrumental section).
Exception - and grows on you.
Enjoyed the absolute hell out of this.
Solid album
Love me some Muddy Waters
This was awesome. I've heard Muddy Waters, but hearing him live was fantastic -- a whole other vibe. And especially considering it was at Newport, I can only imagine how many people in that audience were influenced in their later work. This will be on repeat for years to come. I've already put it on 3 times, if not more. That said, it's not really my specific style of music, so I dinged it a bit, but if I could give 4.5, I would.
I found this very enjoyable. It chugs along in a very relaxing manner.
Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5
It’s called the blues but it makes me feel so good
Muddy doing his thing live and in fine form. The blues at their best.
Some brilliant blues music. This a man who you sense has lived every single thing he’s singing about and it still pains him. Muddy Waters is a legend for a reason!
Pivotal in the blues
Enjoyed this although it sounds a bit the same throughout. Would rate 3.5.
Gorgeous sweet sweet relief. More like this ploise
Boss live blues
I see it was influential. But the first few tracks are just standard blues numbers. It gets better with tiger in the tank. Mojo Working is an absolute killer track. And this was 1960 😮
Some great Muddy. Newport has had some of the best concerts over the years, and this set with Muddy Wtaers ranks up there with the best.
A great album. I enjoy listening to it again. 4/5
Very enjoyable jazz album, it must have been a great show to see live.
Epic name with epic jazz music
Not nearly as good as Hard Again. Solid, but not great. There's just not enough guitar in this one. Also I just don't think most live albums are as strong as studio ones (usually).
great live performance, energy, & tracks
There’s something both heavy and effortless about this set — Muddy in total command, backed by a band that swings like a hammer and smiles while doing it. You can hear the roots of so much that came after in every riff and groove. A landmark performance that feels as alive today as it must have in 1960.
Nice! Might be first proper blues album, def first Chicago blues one, very nice solid live muddy waters record, probably 4 stars, perhaps revisit?
Great live album, it sounds as clear as day and it is enjoyable all the way through. Very good record.
Simply beautiful.
This album is good, danceable at times, and extremely sensual. The father of blues... I discovered him through names like Foo Fighters and Slash. I just wouldn't recommend listening to it at the gym because it's not a sound that works with headphones.
I got my brand on you - 7/10 Im your hoochie coochie man - 7/10 Baby please dont go - 7/10 Soon forgotten - 7/10 Tiger in your tank - 6/10 I feel so good - 8/10 I've got my mojo working / pt2 - 9/10 Goodbye newport blues - 7/10 Meanest woman - 7/10
oh how i love a live album. i’m right there with him singing my little heart out. i can feel the emotion in every word and it’s truly such a treat 8/10
I love Muddy as one of my favorite exponents of Chicago blues, he has some unique licks and that smooth voice, but im not sure the sound quality of this recording does him justice. Hard to nail down a single record though given how prolific he was.
Some really outstanding songs and an incredible vibe
Muddy Waters is great. Newport is also great. Great combo.
Oh, to have been at Newport in 1960!!!;Alaska is was only 3 years old and totally oblivious to music then. What a gift then that this album is able to transport me right back into its front seat !
Um hmm
Det er smått utrolig å høre hvor inflytelsesrikt dette albumet er. Her kan man høre fremtiden!
Love the energy, love the music 4.1
That voice and what a band. Got My Brand Ok You and Got My Mojo Working sizzles.
yo THIS is my shit right here. Never heard before, incredible sound quality for 1960.
muddy waters - good drag name? Prob not my place to suggest that.
(86/100)
When you say blues this is what it conjures. Not massively my thing but recognise how good this is
Great live Jazz album! Very soulful!
On my first listen, the first few songs sounded pretty boring to my ears, but on my second listening, I enjoyed those first few songs much more. Parts of the album do sound kind of thin because of how quiet the bass is. Muddy Waters’s vocals are powerful and legendary. You can hear the influence that Waters’s music would have on popular music throughout the record. 4/5
Highlights: Baby Please Don't Go, Tiger In Your Tank, Got My Mojo Working
Oh damn! This... mmmm. Some good blues right here!
I love Muddy Waters, and I'd never heard this album. It's a good set, but I prefer him to sound a little grittier. This felt very polished, but it still absolutely cooks. 8/10
Great musically
This is early blues at it's finest. A great album!
Groove
I'm a hoochie coochie man now
Muddy Waters is an exceptional blues mucisian. This album is great for a live album, my only issue is that it becomes repetitive.
Just a good, honest, live session of Blues from when of the all time greats.
An album I’ve never taken the time to listen to before. Waters inspired a lot of artists - cannot understate how influential he was. The sound quality on this is good too.
Ó já. Þótt lögin séu öll keimlík þannig séð er þetta bara svo frábært. Þessa plötu verð ég að setja aftur í spilun. Ég er blúsari en bara ekki búinn að hlusta nógu mikið á blús því miður
It's blues. Done well.
yeappp that rules.
Very pleasant - he sounds great and there’s a lot of palpable energy in the live performances. There seemed to be more variation in the style of music than in the later studio album of his that we heard already on this list, so I enjoyed that too.
Fora
Great listen. Doesn’t get enough credit for the sound that made others more famous.
Just a really good time! Unusually I really liked hearing this as a live recording because hearing the crowd go bonkers reminded me how new and exciting this music was when it was released. My favourite song was probably I’ve got my mojo working.
Smooth as hell
Wonderful blues.
Enjoyable! The Apple Music version had a few extra songs which were nice, but the live versions at Newport were better. 3.5, bumping to 4
This is performed so well, you almost don't hear it's live.
Good - lots of classics
Amazing
This was definitely up my alley and can absolutely see myself listening to more of his work.
Quite good stuff.
Tiger in your Tank got a little repetitive by the end. I Feel so good is nice Big fan of when goodbye newport blues came on, great vibe switch
Good energy. Fav track is I've Got My Mojo Working (pt 1).
Got my Mojo working......
Hoochie coochie indeed
Iconic
good music. very nice to hear. am I gonna go back to it? I think so. did it change my life? not really
A live album where you can really feel the energy of both the performers and the crowd. I struggle with the blues because the focus is on the guitar chords and vocals instead of the songwriting, which typically follows the same formula. I do like the sound of electric blues guitar though, and here it's accompanied by raucous drumming, a piano, and a harmonica, the last of which sometimes steals the show. Waters's vocal performance is fantastic; I especially like his word-less ad libs on "Mojo." I do find myself wishing for a bit of variety at points, but the playing is so good and the energy so high that those thoughts quickly go away. This isn't rock music, but it certainly has the swagger of it without losing what makes the blues great too.
Haven't heard this live one before, but wouldn't expect anything less. 4/5
What a banger album - incredible piano player
Classci Jazz, pretty solid
Love this. An important document of live electric blues from that time. A legend at work.
Blues has become my fave genre in recent years. I'm a sucker for this rawness and sheer power. It's a robust escape from some of the crap that modern music throws up. Live at Newport was another welcome back to the future moment for me.
Can’t go wrong with Muddy Waters. His music is legendary. Great album!
I love all this old blues stuff from the Chess label, it’s all so earthy and “real” these guys really did have the blues! This was a way of life and not just music, excellent.
Great classic album in the way blues should be heard: live. Muddy has a wonderful voice. Four + stars
bliuz
I love the aesthetic of this album. I think I get a little tired of it halfway through though.
Very very very good Only thing keeping it from 5 stars is my standard of it doesn’t make me gostupidgocrazy
great album
