Reviews (page 11 of 14)

Decent album! Suprised I’ve never heard this band. A very eclectic album with lots of styles. Good background music.

i listened to this and i enjoyed this but also i feel like i didn’t really /listen/ to it. Few songs on there i already knew and liked, always a pleasure

Another UK act from a particular time frame that probably doesn't really deserve a spot on the 1001. That said, these guys aren't bad.

Nice 60s rock feel

Meh. This just has low key Oasis vibes without the catchiness.

Un brit pop muy sofisticado, me hubiera gustado descubrirlo en la época en que salió.

The album wasn’t bad. I’m not sure how influential it was being released in 89 but it was pretty good.

It's fine. Not to crazy and different pretty much sounds the same from everything in this Era.

They didn't want to be the Beatles as much as Oasis, but it's there in some tracks. I've only ever heard the big hits, but this was OK.

Tracks I liked: I wanna be adored, she bangs the drums, song for my sugar spun sister, made of stone, first part of I am the resurrection. Loved the Scarborough fair inspired interlude in the middle. The somewhat dream poppy vibe was cool. Would I revisit this: maybe. Sure.

I want to like it more. Some of the bass lines tell me it's going somewhere, then it doesn't. Honestly it might be my expectation. I thought they were a "harder" sound. Then when I got 80's rock band #3 I went, what?! So I decided I'm going to listen to it again later now that I've got one listen in. Cause right now it's a 2. Alright after another listen I'm happier about the album. It's very chill and great to walk to. I can see myself listening to it again. I suspect this album grows on you. Even though it's not my favorite it is an enjoyable album....

Favorite Track: Shoot You Down

The Monkees or maybe the Byrds, but amped up and fuzzy, with some dance beats and long solos. Plus acid. Even more acid than the Monkees and the Byrds. I know there's a lot of love for this record, but I listened three times today: while there are some huge hooky gems, there is a fair bit of filler. Hate to lose any Anglophilic cred, but I think this album is overrated.

Another one suffused with nostalgia for me, but it didn’t live up to my hype. A few songs are magical, and obviously the sound was super influential for Brit pop, but much of the album is forgettable.

The ur-Oasis, the origins of Britpop, the linchpin of extremely English dudes playing guitar music in the 90s. There’s a lot of muddled middle on this record but on a fresh listen there’s something unassuming and subtle about this one that keeps it apart from some of its contemporaries. These guys don’t sound like they’re desperate to be rock stars, they just have a sound and play it. But it’s not a fully formed sound at this point and I don’t know if it ever would have been.

if they let me create a genre i would call it baggy

I really wanted to love this. It has flashes. But never really comes together.

Mediocre

Nothing stuck out but certainly wasn’t unpleasant

ik vond don’t stop een hard listen, i wanna be adored is wel een bangertje waar ik toen ik 14-15 was veel naar luisterde maar nu beetje beu gehoord (song for my) sugar spun sister vind ik ook wel echt fkn nice, zeker top 3 van het album, heel aanstekelijk i am the resurrection is ook wel top 3 samen met sugar spun sister en i wanna be adored. goed album maar had soms wel de neiging om iets nieuws op te leggen, een andere artiest en album hahahaha, misschien gewoon een te lage attentiespanne en te lang album

I liked this more than I expected. It was poppy, groovy, with some 80s flair.

This style of vocals keep me from liking a lot of bands that get labeled psychedelic rock. Guitar part in Waterfall is catchy. This and Shoot Your Down, This is the One, I Am The Resurrection, Fools Gold are my favorite tracks. Cut it down to just these songs it's a solid 4 star EP. Lots of songs that are objectively good, but overall it's not really for me. Back half of the album just pulled it up to three stars.

First time listening this and I can absolutely hear where many early 00's indie bands got their inspiration. Totally understand why I Wanna Be Adored is rated so high but I was rocking to Made Of Stone and I Am The Resurrection.

Pretty cool but this era really had shitty mixes

I found this reasonably enjoyable although I didn’t think the album necessarily had any standout songs (asides from those that are more well known so they stick in the mind). But it’s a impressive first album, interesting that this was probably the peak of the band’s work. I think what I like most about the sound of the album is the mixing of different eras, there’s definitely some pop 80s in there but aspects of earlier eras like the 60s comes through too.

A solid 3.5/5 album with some interesting entries. Don't Stop and the Backward/Forward compatibility was quite clever to be included in the album. I think certain things were left to be wished like a more lengthier "Elizabeth My Dear" or a less shorter Fool's Gold as it seemed to drag towards the end. Overall it will be bumped down to a 3 with it's rating as it wasn't as enjoyable as some of the other 4s so far.

I liked the overall vibe of the album. Quite fun to listen to. Nice blend of pop rock, psy rock, dance. It feels like a blueprint of 90s britpop and I could see how they would have ended up influencing later groups like Oasis or the Verve. 3.5/5. Fav tracks: I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs the Drums,Fools gold I don't like that they're Utd fans though..

Pretty middle of the road stuff

Too distracting to be in the background, but not interesting enough to keep my attention.

Its good but I’m not really feeling it. I think the only song I would listen to is I wanna be adored. (I already knew that one.) Maybe I will listen again later and be really into it but just not my vibe right now.

I was surprised with how many songs I knew on this album. I knew ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ beforehand, but listening through I realized I had heard almost all the songs at some other time before. I enjoyed it, proto Brit-pop, but not something I would go back to turn on again. Fun music to dance to, I guess.

I thought this guy was yelling, "I wanna be your dog!" Actually, it's "I Wanna Be Adored." Whatever. Either way, this album is, as the Brits say, yellow wank.

3.5....rounding down because didn't' feel like it had a whole lot of replay-ability.

Rock, ok Haut mich nicht vom Hocker

The song Shoot You Down reminded me so much of the band Summer Salt. A bit weird to hear such an old song remind me of a band in the modern age. This showed that this was just a testament of how songs can be timeless in sound. Unlike most albums on here, it started exciting me toward the end, minus the very repetitive last 2 tracks. Going solid 3 here for the mixed review.

Not even a month in and I’m already at the stage where a rock album is going to have to really impress me to get anything higher than a 3. This is pretty good, but only just pretty good. Nothing to really write home about. As usual, it took me a while to start getting down with it, but I think the ladder half of the album is a LOT better than the top half personally, specifically “Made of Stone”, “I Am the Resurrection”, and my personal favorite “Fools Gold”. The singer sounds ok, the melody is fine, the guitarist can be boring at times and it all just sounds alright as a whole. Another album I probably won’t remember in a bit in all honesty, but hey, it’s definitely still great from top to bottom. Besides being a tad boring in places, I don’t really have any other big complaints with it. I don’t quite understand why this one is so highly rated honestly, but to each their own.

This album is just a solid 6/10. The downside is that all the songs are incredibly similar and don’t really take too many risk. I enjoy that it reminds me of The Cure but it also has that boring Beatles vibe where the songs sound the same. For a first album, I feel like you need to try and make your own sound and they failed to do so.

I’m way behind, I gotta keep this short. Band is ahead of its time this album would probably be on repeat for me if I was the right generation. Fools Gold and I wanna be adored I thought were both great songs exploring unique ideas

I little... soft? for me IDK a type of music I like but not really clicking here. Still not terrible. 6/10

She Bangs The Drums GH nostalgia and a lot of reverb.

This came out a few years before my entry into the 120-minutes-verse, and I was familiar with the first two songs (which are solid) and the general "classic" reputation of the album, thus I was confused as to why the rest of the album was just kind of boring.

I Wanna Be Adored is fantastic. The rest of this album… it's fine I guess

it pains me to give this rating but even if it was boring, i t wasnt bad

Not too many thoughts on this album.

It was surprising, the first song of the album was pretty thematically different from the rest of it. It put me on my heels in trying to pin down a genre, but honestly, I really enjoyed what started playing in the auto-generated playlist after the end of the album. So while I don't know what it was, I'm pretty sure I like it, haha.

I’ve long thought The Stone Roses just weren’t a band for me but there were a few tracks on this album I actually liked

It was a okay, but just faded into background music for me.

Good a few good songs a bit boring though

This starts strong with the shoegazey I Wanna Be Adored - then turns to jangly Madchester crap. Boo!

Not bad. It actually sounds good. But I find it bland and too Beatles "inspired".

Starts off really strong but I do feel the middle of the album meanders and doesn't hold the promise of the first four or so track. Fools Gold is a straight up classic though obviously.

Jangle dance pop. Some songs could use a bit of editing. Highlights: "She Bangs the Drums", "Waterfall" (the guitar arpeggios sound like a waterfall), "Made of Stone" (good guitar and bass interplay, catchy chorus melody. I get Smiths vibes on this one.), "Fools Gold" (more dancey, slight U2 Achtung Baby era vibes) Notable: "Elizabeth My Dear" (it's the tune of "Scarborough Fair" and very short)

Three catchy tracks to open, then 1 that would have been better as a b-side. Descent middle, then a few more good and great ones to finish off. Favorites - "I Wanna Be Adored", "Made of Stone", "I Am the Resurrection." I remember when this album came out. The band hit so big on the college/alternative scene so fast that it kind of soured me on them, though I've always like "Adored." Glad I was given a reason to revisit the album. I wouldn't call it an all-time classic for me, but a solid debut, which helped usher in the Madchester scene to America.

Solid album, starts with some banger tracks, then just settles in for awhile until we get nice 8 and 9 minute jams to end the record. Top 3 Songs: Waterfall (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister I Am the Resurrection

Random thoughts: * feels like this is a bit of a genre mashup making it hard to define: dream pop, jangly guitar, 90s alternative before it happened, 80s alt a la the smiths. * I can see why this is a bit of a hidden gem and don’t get the proper attention it deserved * I listened to this one twice because it was such a good album to throw on.

Late 80s brit pop psych, enjoyed it 3.5

I love a good 3 or 4 songs on this when they come on but never really seek them out for some reason I think a lot of that has to do with the weakness of Ian Brown’s vocals This album is good but it’s not exactly the second coming (as indeed, neither was The Second Coming) She Bangs The Drum, Waterfall and (Obviously) I Am The Resurrection are great. The rest could leave or take

Pretty chill rock album. I remember listening to this when I was young. The next album was more popular amongst my friends but the "alt" kids of the day preferred this album. It's great and very easy to listen to, I'm going to put this on when a relaxed mood hits me.

Enjoyed a lot of the album but nothing really stood out to me. The backwards stuff on Don't Stop really wasn't fun to listen to for me- felt a little too uncanny valley and some of the songs at the end seemed to go on a little longer than I had patience for. Favourite: Bye Bye Bad Man Least: Don't Stop

The Stone Roses by The Stone Roses makes for okay background music on a weekend day filled with chores because like most weekend days filled with chores you want them to be done so you can move on to the fun part. It's an okay album with an attempt to create their own sound only to be drowned out by the oncoming hard rock and grunge alternative train from the US. 3/5

Gitaren

A few stand out moments but a lot of it blended into the background. The vibe was nice but didn't keep me hooked the whole way through.

some brilliant classic songs on here but very front-loaded and not something i'd really listen to as a full album unit

Not dissimilar to the Happy Mondays, something I liked but it didn’t really grab me. I’ll give it 3 stars but it’s more 3 and a half, because I did enjoy some of this more than I thought I would.

I never got into this band, but was cautiously optimistic. I liked it OK, but it didn’t make me regret having it listened to it yet.

Strong opening tracks, then there’s another couple good tunes spread throughout. Will revisit the classics but nothing else.

Blah...

I was OBSESSED with She Bangs the Drums when it came out, I was in middle school and I only heard it on the radio, never knew its title or band, took me more than a decade before I actually found it, remember how difficult it sometimes was to find the artist behind songs you heard in passing?

Totally fine but forgettable pop rock. Did not really make an impression on me in any way.

boring but not bad

Very cool listen! The Stone Roses provides a very pretty sounding wall-of-sound release that I can see where a lot of bands in modernity got their inspiration from this record. I almost feel like its' sound is the prototype for a lot of shoegaze groups that I listen to today. Not sure if it's a record I'll return to frequently but it was a pleasant listen!

Classic British sound, some great songs. 3, 4, among the best I've heard lately. 5 great aswell, like the lead guitar. I like the lead vocals. The instrumentals are sometimes a bit bland sadly. Go directly to the 2009 remaster. Miles better.

Good record, but not my era

I found this pretty forgettable. Maybe I wasn't in the right headspace, or the impact was such that it set the new bar that all current-day music is easily able to clear.

Preppy Brit Pop from the late 80's / early 90's. This album influenced one of my favorites, BRMC. Coincidentally (or not) the best song on this 1989 album is "Don't Stop," whereas in 2003, BRMC's single from Take Them On was "Stop." What BRMC did was take the psychedelia and add some America grit and attitude. The Stone Roses is an acquired taste for people born in the early '70s.

I don’t think I want to be adored. Loved, yes. But adored? … I don’t adore The Stone Roses. I don’t love them either. But I don’t hate them. “The Stone Roses” was a little bit Britpoppy, a little bit 60s jangly rock, a little bit psychedelic. Apparently that’s representative of “Madchester,” the Manchester indie rock scene in the 80s and early 90s. Not the music style I typically associate with MDMA, but it seems that was their thing - ecstatic dancing to indie pop at clubs. Like their contemporaries The Happy Mondays, it’s decent. Doesn’t quite make me want to dance, doesn’t quite make me want to pop a molly, doesn’t quite make me want to listen again. I’m just not mad for Madchester.

Man I really like the first track, I had such high hopes for the album based on that initial track. Ultimately it didn't live up to my expectations but it ends with a bang. Too bad the middle is just kind of meh.

obvious classic that deserves its reputation some true bangers, very beatles-y song writing with ahead of its time production kind of wish it was mixed better, vocals are drowned but probably a stylistic choice

There was nothing I disliked about this album, but nothing really stood out either. I liked the psychedelic aspects and its 60s sound. In my view, it was better take on British indie than others I’ve heard. I may revisit to see if any songs connect better with me.

Like if The Beatles and The Who had a baby who also were also slightly into shoegaze? Obviously a lot more influences than that, but those are the ones that jumped out at me. Good album, just doesn't hit me like I assume it hits a lot of other people. I'd just rather be listening to The Beatles, The Who, or My Bloody Valentine/slowdive, haha.

Aquele tipo de música que você reconhece da trilha sonora de filmes. Gostoso de ouvir!

It’s ok. Never really understood the hype. Meandering. The backwards track (if that’s what it was) was unnecessary.

1989 feels so late for this sound, it feels like these guys belong in 1969.

I rather liked this dreamy pop, with elements of grunge and of new wave. Nice sound. Not spectacular but a few catchy tunes.

Classic 80s poprock. Mostly not my style... Couple of banger tho: I am the resurrection and foold gold. Solid 2 star album but the couple of bangers make it 3.

I feel like I should have more takes on this than I do. I was expecting a britpop album and it mostly feels like that to me. There were a few Shoegazier/groovier songs that surprised me, and none of it was the truly hateful dregs this genre can sink to.

This is super critically acclaimed and considered super great and I can't figure out why. I remember when it came out, and wasn’t into it then; still not now, but I can appreciate it. 3.5⭐️

I hear the Byrds' jangle, the Beatles' harmonies, and other 60s influences, with a great bass line and wah-pedal guitar ripped from the 80s in most of the tracks. On paper, this should be fire to me, but Ian whats-his-face's vocals are pretty dull, and after a while, the whole album just drags on.

Decent britisk rock, tidlig indie, lidt melankolsk, stadig upbeat

More psych than Brit pop but still not sure what all the fuss is about this album. It just seems a little too comfortable and doesn’t push itself until the last few songs.

This album kinda fucks, best songs are not the singles. Don’t stop is cool too

It's a decent album. The first few song were not very interesting, but the album picks up near the end. Some of the later grooves are pretty good. 2.5/5 Might listen again

A very interesting album as it seems like it is “the” bridging album between the sound of the 80s to what was to come. I have never come across an album that has parts with the 80s synth sound and then moves on to arrangements and music that are still heard now. I’m glad I heard it but I don’t see seeking out more unless they come up in this project again.

This album was pretty solid. The vocals were a bit at times, but the instrumentals were good. The last 2 songs were longer then usual, but they were kinda split up, so it didn't drag, which I also liked. Overall pretty good. 3.5 Liked songs: I Wanna Be Adored, I Am the Resurrection Least Favorite: Fools Gold

Another band I had never heard of but overall enjoyed.

The rehearsal room meets the rave - great vibes and huge sounds. Praise Mani! Gets a bit repetitive.... Favourite tracks: Waterfall, She Bangs The Drums, I Am The Resurrection

Cool album. Kind of feels like a mediator between 80s and 90s rock style. I could give this one a few more listens.

Some pre-listen thoughts, the first track “I Wanna Be Adored” is probably one of my favorite songs oat, so I have pretty high expectations going into this one. The Stone Roses’s self titled record is, in short, nothing fantastic, but pretty consistent in quality with someone generally good vibes throughout the entire project. Most songs follow the same tempo which does make some portions of the album feel a bit sluggish, but that just allows the songs that stick out to be even more special. Instrumentally, it’s about as 80’s and 90’s as it gets, although I do wish the lead vocalist had a little bit more variation in his vocal style. Overall, it was an enjoyable listen that was interesting enough to not make me want to skip songs. Favorite tracks: I Wanna Be Adored, Bye Bye Bad Man, Made Of Stone (I really really really like this one)

Sounds like the 90s version of the smiths but happier. Honestly it’s a shame the band distanced themselves from so young because that is a fantastic song and would’ve added a little more flavor/variety to the album. The little jam at the end of I am the resurrection is very cool though

Kannte ich noch nicht, finde ich gefällig.

Liv top songs: -I wanna be adored -Bye Bye Bad Man -I Am the Resurrection -Fools Gold

It was fine.

Apologies The Stone Roses, I was unfamiliar with your game. 3.5/5 Standout tracks: - Bye Bye Bad Man (4/5) - Elizabeth My Dear (5/5)

I like the sound. It has aspects that remind me of every decade from the 60s through the 90s. I think if it listened to this a few times I would really like it.

I really don’t get the hype around this record. It’s fine.

dunno, but also I was really absorbed in other things while I was listening to this

This album had 3 amazing songs but the rest had a kinda mid new-wavy sound. Stand-out: She Bangs the Drums, This Is the One

A few really good ones on this album.

It was pretty good.

I actually like a lot of this, even though it’s not my typical style. Kind of grunge-y but softer, described by Derek as “pre-shoegaze”. She Bangs the Drums a starter favorite.

Wasn’t anything special for me.

Not bad for the genre but nothing that would make me want to return.

This was better than expected.

A band I’m familiar with by name only; I’ve barely heard any of their work despite being well aware of their existence. Waterfall was a very nice song, it reminded me a bit of Godless by the Dandy Warhols. The other tracks were ok, it dragged on a bit, but decent enough for a solid 3.

I wanna be adored: wär wett das scho nöd. Leider banged "She" drums nüd würkli. The Waterfall isch nüd riesend...

My first response was, "Well, this is kind of dull." I had just finished with Portishead which I did not enjoy but it was challenging and forced me to pay attention. This seemed so uninteresting by comparison. It grew on me though. A few songs pulled me in a lot, and now I'm going to have to give it another listen. Alas, after listen #2, this is overall meh.

Decent! Some fun tunes.

For me, this started as a generic 80's pop album, but it did get better over time. My main complain is the production. It sounds clean, don't get me wrong. But I can not stand the 80's sound

For a second I thought I was listening to The Beatles. I don't know if it's because they were in the music industry around the same time or because the sound is similar, either way I enjoyed it. I specifically enjoyed the song Shoot You Down.

Prima album 3.0 Die britse bands uit de 90s is niet echt mijn smaak, zeurstem

Honestly this was good I liked it a lot The instrumentation was to my liking a bit psychedelic played with panning a lot vocal recording style fit Not very experimental or deep but the core sound was good I liked a lot of songs; i wanna be adored, she bangs the drum, don't stop, fool's gold, and all sorts of moments in other songs strong start

Interesting percussion Jam band, alt adult. Safe LP, rocking chair jams Which way will the vocals go? Like: Cut 3 "Waterfall", Cut 4 & Cut 12 "Fools Gold"

Oddly enough I do know these guys. I am always taken back by myself, knowing who they are. I was less than 10 years old when I heard of these guys, and buying their album "the second coming". I do not remember what attached me to them, maybe caught a music video of theirs on MTV or VH1. truly do not know how young-me discovered and liked them. So odd, none of these tracks, for the first handful of tracks sound remotely familiar to me.

rate here xx

12/27/24. Enjoyed this one, nice album that may have laid the foundation for the later Britpop explosion.

I liked it. Shades of ‘80’s Top 40 and Beatles

very nice gentle rock album, highlight is the first song for me, doesnt take me on a journey

Pretty solid

Interesting, that I’ve never heard this album before. Overall, it’s a solid 3

Enjoyed the opening few tracks but it suddenly felt very samey and ended up getting bored of it. Would enjoy the beginning of every song because the drums would feel different, then by 30 seconds in it’d all feel the same. Not bad though

I've got a great affection for these indie anthems, reminds me of the nightclubs I used to spend every weekend at, and pop culture during the early 90s. Even if Ian Brown is little more than a lairy chimpanzee. Remember when he started on T4’s Steve Jones for absolutely no reason? This is a musically sound album. Nice swishy swashy-ness, fat rhythm section, echoey vocals, and very well written pop songs. As I said, anthemic sums it up for me, Adored and Resurrection are immense, and Fools Gold is the stand out track, what a certified banger. It's a shame Stone Roses fans are often dickheads of the highest order. Calm down you paisley clad, helmet hair, vesper enthusiasts, it's not like they're really good like The La’s.

Album was some good ass mid music.

There’s a couple of absolute classics amidst more ‘fillers ‘ than I’d recalled. Took me back to a time you couldn’t leave the house without seeing someone in a t-shirt with that lemon on the front.

First 4 songs I loved (highlighted by my favorite of album ‘I Wanna Be Adored’). Middle of album felt a little repetitive. Closers, ‘I Am the Resurrection’ and ‘Fools Gold’ seemed to right the ship, so to speak. Another listen may bump score from a 3 to 4.

Always interesting to get an album that you have never heard of, especially one that apparently is so highly regarded. Despite my cultural blindspot to this album, our dear friend Alex Wise was salivating over this selection and pleads for listeners to listen to the original or 1st remaster, as the "20th anniversary turned the bass up to a trillion and it drowns everything out." These are always tough to rate as it seems it warrants a deeper dive than i'm currently willing to give it. I liked the sound enough though (kind of a bridge between jangly 80s new wave and 90s britpop) so i'll hedge and give it a 3

I've never been a big fan of this album outside of Fools Gold. I'm probably in the minority there.

A very good album. Has a Byrds, Smiths, Laurel Canyon feel. Liked it.

it was enjoyable

I was very surprised by this album. It has notes (haha) of a 60’s vibe that reminded me of the Hollies or the Byrds, yet it also felt very 80’s. My husband and I have totally different musical tastes and we both really enjoyed listening to this one

I liked it, but probs won’t listen to again. It’s giving very much uk alternative rock. Like Strokes vibes.

Some great songs but also some skip-able tracks. Not sure why it’s consistently at the top of all time record lists. Not the biggest fan of Ian Brown’s voice either.

Technically good but was only excited by Fool's Gold

Pretty good, not my favorite.

Coups de cœur : - Don't Stop - Made Of Stone - I Am The Resurrection

I think I would’ve liked this in the 80’s.

I really enjoyed what The Stone Roses were doing musically here and after a listen, I found myself leaning 3 stars and found myself listening again trying to convince myself it’s better than a 3. I ran through this album 3 times today and the bad is fantastic at delivering dreamy, jangle pop. In the end, it’s the vocals that tend to take me out of it, Ian Brown’s vocals just feel too fluffy to me if that makes any sense, he has an arrogance which is fine but his vocals just aren’t good enough to get me to really be into this. It’s a great album as far as the band goes, I Wanna Be Adored and She Bangs the Drums are two solid tracks to kick it off. Bye Bye Bad Man kinda stunk, I perked up again at Made of Stone which was fantastic and the closing track was really great too. Ian Brown isn’t the worst but he’s not for me. Really strong album despite him. 3.5 rounded down 3 stars

***an ok album, easy listening, some tracks sound alike

This isn't a stand out band by any stretch but I do give them credit for being solid. I wouldn't necessarily sit and listen to the entire album again, but individual songs wouldn't be bad to hear again.

The only song that I knew going in was Fools Gold. This was an interesting album and I can understand why so many people hold it i high regard. With that said this just didn't connect with me. I listened to it multiple times, giving it a chance, but it seems to be missing the spark to ignite some passion.

3.75 A lot to like here. Love discovering new band this way.

Didn't stick out to me. Liked it but will not listen to it again.

1. "I Wanna Be Adored" 3,5 2. "She Bangs the Drums" 3,3 3. "Waterfall" 3,4 4. "Don't Stop" 3,6 5. "Bye Bye Badman" 3,4 6. "Elizabeth My Dear" 3,4 7. "(Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister" 3,1 8. "Made of Stone" 3 9. "Shoot You Down" 3 10. "This Is the One" 3,2 11. "I Am the Resurrection" 3,8 12. Fools gold 3,7 Average 3,37

Kinda fire, drags on way too long though. Waterfall is an absolute banger

Some very nice, jangly early Britpop.

Not at all like The Rolling Stones plus Guns N’ Roses

Ihan kivaa musisointia, taustalle etenkin. Pitää kuunnella uudelleen, mutta kaksi tai kolme tähteä, selviää toisella kuuntelulla myöhemmin.

This is like if you kept the instrumentals and 80's feel of The Smiths but replaced the whiney cunt singing with someone more tolerable. This is pretty alright as far as Britslop goes. My main gripe with this record is half the songs could be cut in half and the album would be so much better. I enjoy a long song but some songs are just the same repeating bars over and over and over and it's pretty exhausting. You have to sit through 10 minutes of repeating songs to be able to get to the gold in this album, which is a shame. Fool's Gold is a fucking 10/10 song though. Ten minutes long and I could listen to it on repeat all day, phenomenal. Biased of course as it was featured in GTA SA and thus I grew up bopping to it. How to fix this album: 1. Cut all the songs playtime in half. 2. Delete Don't Stop from the album entirely. 3. Move Fool's Gold to the place of Don't Stop. 4. It is now a 10/10 album. Britpop album #6/48.

I will preface this by saying I vastly prefer "The Second Coming" as far as The Stone Roses are concerned. This feels like the genetic precursor to the bastard deformed clones that emerged from the big vat labeled 1990's britpop. It has the same general vibe but its just better. It's funkier, the instrumentals are more interesting and varied, and even though the vocals don't really have a lot of variance they have a nice relaxed sound and are at minimum very distinct compared to the rest of what would follow. I like it, I don't think it's their best work. I probably won't come back to anything specifically from this.

A good album with a lot of high moments. Pretty backloaded and lacked the oomf it nearly had but I wish it had more of 7/10 Fav tracks - bye bye bad man, (Song for my) Sugar Spun Sister, Made of Stone, I am the Ressurection Least Fav - n/a

never got into this band because they never really made it in America. I read about them all the time in UK music magazines but they got very little air time on US radio. I like the first few songs on this album because they have a bit of a 80s new wave sound (I wanna be adored and She bangs the drums) but then the tracks get a lot more ephemeral with long droning passages that remind me of the worst of the Beatles. Then the album swings back towards a more pop inspired, funky sound near the end. The last song, Fools Gold sounds like a hit. A funky dance song similar to Mysterious Ways by U2 from Achtung Baby. If the album got rid of the trance-like, meandering shit in the middle and stuck to the pop songs then they probably would have broke in the US and would have been all over MTV. Oh well.

OK as background music.

Rated by many people as a classic and certainly the band and this album were part of the zeitgeist of late 80's / 90's Manchester. It contains some notable tracks but I've always been a little bit irritated by obvious filler "Don't Stop" which is just "Waterfall" played backwards. It's managed to age pretty well since I first heard it and is definitely worth having a listen.

Just what I expected, it has that iconic sound of early 90s British indie. Nothing offensive, if a little bland at points. Still better than oasis!

It's okay

Classic Madchester vibes, a bit psychedelic and masturbatory in places but not bad - the last two tracks definitely didn't need to be that long! She Bangs the Drums, however, has always and will always be a certified banger.

Starts off noisy, but nice enough. It has that same vibe I get from many shoegaze-y albums where it starts out and my brain is too overwhelmed to truly take it all in, but unlike your My Bloody Valentines or Candy Claws, I never adjusted to this overwhelming sound, and I'd say it even started to give me a headache. The melodies are okay and the instrumentation is a solid enough 90s fare, but it doesn't feel like there's any texture to the madness. It's just loud and echo for the sake of it, and it was starting to drive me a bit mad by the end, despite enjoyment at the start. Leads to a vexing album where I understand the hype to some extent, but I can't imagine returning, lest I want even more of a migraine.

#367. This kinda reminds me of The Smiths a little, in a what if The Smiths weren't intolerable kind of way. Except Fools Gold, which doesn't sound anything like the Smiths, and is [coincidence or conspiracy?] the best song on the album. 3/5: tolerable

Not bad, music sounded repetitive.

Felt almost really familiar. I was impressed.

Pretty chill vibes. Enjoyed listening to this album, and pretty easy on the ears :)

I've now listened to this twice and can't remember a thing about this album. Slides through me like corn.

Not too bad. Some fun guitar work in there. Starts slow, but gets better in the middle, then returns to mediocre by the end. Best Song: Made of Stone

Good memories of a couple of the songs. Solid but average overall.

Kinda meh at first listen. Not bad but not doing much for me.

dreamy, rocky, enjoyable!

A bit flowery for my tastes, but otherwise fine. 2.8

Not bad...but nothing really memorable either.

Good, bit didnmt catch my attention that much, start songs were banger

First impression: skinny britrock. Additional notes: the guitar is wonderful. So is the bass. The drums do a fair bit of work. The guitar is a bit glam rock-y at times. It kinda just seems a bit confused. Vocalist is average.

enjoyable but forgettable. Still a vibe though

I don't get it.

The music is pretty good -easy to listen to in the background while I'm working. I´m not sure I'd seek it out to play again on my own, but its not like I hated it. I enjoyed the 60's vibe that ran throughout it.

Ah, the Stone Roses. I knew several people in high school/college that were absolutely fanatical about The Stones Roses, but I couldn't really ever get into them despite their popularity and success. I think it's mainly how nearly *everything* sounds like it's been put through some sort of flange/reverb effect, which (to me) doesn't add depth but instead makes it all sound the same (and perhaps is also the cause of the poorly-mixed-and-thus-nearly-incomprehensible lyrics?); I'm very reminded of the Happy Mondays album "Bummed" in this collection, which I felt was equally meh. My favorites/preferred songs are probably "Bye bye bad man", "Sugar spun sister", and "I am the resurrection". (I had high hopes for "Elephant Stone", since it strangely wasn't included in the YouTubeMusic playlist for this album, but aside from more interesting drum/rhythm sections, it wasn't much different.) It's kind of amazing that at least one person ranked this album as #11 all time (Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums, according to the Wikipedia info). But they certainly had a loyal and widespread following, and I'm intrigued that the Flaming Lips reworked the entire album in 2013 with their "The Time Has Come to Shoot You Down… What a Sound" (admittedly, not so intrigued to listen to that other album now). And I'm really impressed to find out that the album cover is by their guitarist, and inspired by both Jackson Pollack (which is pretty evident) and the May 1968 Paris riots (not so evident), plus a tie-in to their song on the album "Bye bye bad man".

Great tight pop rock--hard to be both lush and tight at the same time--really good. Awful lyrics. Just awful. It doesn't help that I heard "I wanna be adored by you" as "I wanna be your dog." A rare album that would have been better, nearly, as an instrumental.

Dad loves this album

Still listening but its a pleasant, mild sounding album. I've heard of Stone Roses before, but never "heard" them until yesterday. Still, my opinion is TBD for now.

It's ok, didn't blow me away, very samey

I remember hearing a lot about The Stone Roses. I kind of thought their hey day was in the mid-late 90s, not 1989. Having just rated the Oasis debut and previously shit all over other brit-pop additions to this list, I'm not feeling quite so critical here. Maybe it's because these guys are bit more spacey than poppy. Getting some serious psychedelic-era Beatles vibes here. This is somewhere in the 3.5 range for me but I'm not going to round up today.

Mostly fun little pop tunes, quite enjoyable to listen to.

Never heard of these guys and after a few listens, I kept thinking, "who does these guys remind of" and I could never pinpoint, but they sounded familiar. Overall, this wasn't a bad album, but I never found that song that generated that excited to hear this vibe. Songs that stood out were Waterfall and Don't Stop, but damn, the music sounded almost exactly the same. Maybe that's why I enjoyed these 2 the most. I swear I could hear All Apologies in Nirvana in Bye Bye Bad Man. Thought this song was pretty good too. And of course, This Is The One made me think of my beautiful Mindy. A good, solid album, but just never hit the excitement level I am always seeking. I bet if they add a 'M' after the first 'E' in their name and replaced the word Stone with Roses, I would have loved! Get it, Luke? Pretty good overall. I'll go with a 3.5, but can't round up for this one. 3.5

While I was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t absolutely hate it, this also is very much not for me. This is so stoned out, so vibey, and so goddamn British. It’s fine while it’s on, but I know I’d never go out of my way to revisit it. And truthfully, it’s so spaced-out and drug-fueled that even when it’s on, it faded into the background for me. It felt so invisible, in fact, that I’m having a hard time understanding how it still has retained such a high level of praise, even for folks who weren’t alive to witness this album in real time. It’s solid, sure, but very far from genius. It just doesn’t engage me, and while I know that’s the point in a way, I need something with more teeth. At least it isn’t just blatant pastiche for ‘60s British bands. That counts for something.

Light. - good background music

Chill music nothing crazy but I like it

Man, it doesn’t even remotely feel like it’s been one year. I started this as a silly little thing, figuring I’d only make it a week or two, and now here I am. But I’ve loved (almost) every second of it. And when this album popped up, I figured it might not be a horrible way to spend the 365th day. The Stone Roses’ debut is one of those albums that really resonates with a lot of people, and those who love it won’t ever stop talking about it. It very much has an albeit small, but cult following behind it. Baggy isn’t really a genre I believe it real though. Like, it’s named after a sort of British fashion trend? I feel this kind of music is so rooted in British culture and history, that you sort of have to be clued into that in order to appreciate what this did for the time period. And I think this album definitely tackles the psychedelic feeling very well. It’s a record meant to heard during the summer in the warmth of the sun, on your bike with your friends. So I apologize to any rabid fans of this record when I say I just don’t see it. It’s the same way I’ve felt about Sonic Youth for a long time. Daydream Nation was supposed to be this incredible album that indie-heads have been drooling over for almost 40 years, and it just did nothing for me. I wanted to like this album so badly, considering there are a few decent songs. But the rest of this just blends together, and I forgot what I was even really supposed to care about. There were seemingly trying to capture the same energy of The Cure’s less intense material, while also having a rhythm section reminiscent of Joy Division and New Order. And it lacks any real personality. This is unfortunately one of the more overrated albums I’ve heard, and it breaks my heart that I didn’t love it and couldn’t have an amazing album to celebrate one year of pain and suffering. Rating: 5/10

meh, low 3 imo

Album started strong, really enjoyed the first few songs. But then started to get bored. Big finish with Fools Gold, one of the best FIFA tunes ever. But overall was keen for the album to finish, an hour was too much for me.

"I Wanna Be Adored" abre el disco y las espectativas ritmo y letra hipnóticos. Persoalmente me gusta la épica "Made of Stone". Su primer álbum fue el canto del cisne de los Stone Roses. Nunca más cumplieron con las expectativas de este, su primer álbum, y se desintegraron poco después de lanzar su segundo disco cinco años después.

Not bad

Nice and steady rock.

3.5* Much like their 2nd album, couple standouts and the rest is pretty decent. They have a cool groove, I overall.

This album is hard to pin down. Just when you think it's firmly in the the Smiths and Cure camp, they come in with songs so Beatles influenced I hope they didn't feel that they were being original. The album ends with a 70's style epic, wah pedal heavy and a bassline ala Steve Miller Band, Fly like and Eagle. All of it is good, but so derivative that I have no idea what their sound is.

Some very good songs but some of it goes on a bit.

I liked it but it's not going to be a regular listen

Pleasant but nothing groundbreaking. It is also jarring when I’m thinking, “ok one song left” and that song is 10 minutes long. To me it felt fairly sterile - clean without a lot of glaring issues, but without the edge.

I didn't dislike it, but it didn't grab me either. Kinda forgettable.

A fine, easy listen. Very Beatles-esque at points and very The Smiths-esque in other points, both whom I enjoy. 6/10

The one's hard. On the one hand, if they hadn't done so much acid they might have noticed how badly their contract would screw them. But on the other hand, this album would sound completely sober. I don't think anyone really wins here.

Melkoiset jumit lopussa. 9 min biisit? En ole varma, ovatko venytykset aivan tarpeen. Popimmista osuuksista pidin kovasti! Ei ärsyttävää indietä vaikka onkin indietä.

Mikä saa ihmiset tykkäämään heistä enemmän kuin tykkäävätkään? Bändin nimi? Levyn kansikuva? Projektin lyhytaikaisuus tai äänivallimainen soundi? No, loppujen lopuksi nämä ovat pahimmat 60-lukuhurahtaneisuudet poislukien aika hyviä kappaleita. Saattavat myös aueta hitaammin kuin kaikilla on motivaatiota odottaa.

Didnt fully finish, bur was very good

Wannabe classic rock? Okay. Fools Gold is pretty good with lively, danceable bass and flowy vocals.

It my have been a big thing at the time but I found it mostly forgettable. A record that I've heard 1000 times, maybe because it's been copied, but just not my thing

Had a great vibe and it was a well constructed album that all flowed well. Nothing really grabbed me, but the album was good

Started off a bit slow but only got more interesting. Goes well with everything that was popular at the time, although that's not always a bad thing. Chord progression is sometimes quite interesting. Not a lot going on for some of it though. Highlights: She Bangs the Drums Bye Bye Bad Man (Song For My) Sugar Spun Sister Made of Stone

Pretty good. Nice melodies. Might listen again. That's a good sign!

Fun vibes but a back half that overshadows the first. Favourite track: (Songs for My) Sugar Spun Sister.

A bit generic

It’s fine. I didn’t like this stuff much in the 90s and I still don’t now.

Some good songs Standout songs: Don't Stop Made of Stone I am the resurrection

Pretty damn good. But lost it's way a bit in the middle and finished strong I think I need a bit more time with it but it's a high 3 at the minute lad

decent album

I was surprised I knew one or two songs on here! I liked the vibe this album was going for, and it sounded very clean. I just don't think it stood out all that much for me.

Yes, Britpop…nothing more 5/10

- Not familiar with this group. The album encompasses an odd smorgasbord of genres that are hard to connect. - "I Wanna Be Adored" sounds like a precursor to grunge. Definitely my favorite track of the album. (I liked "Made of Stone," too.) - After that, the songs veer much more toward 60s psychedelic ("Don't Stop" being the most obvious example). This seems to be the Stone Roses typical sound. - The final track ("Fools Gold") is such a departure, circling around to mediocre funk, that it solidified this as a 3 star, rather than a 4 star, effort.

Unpopular opinion, but second coming is better.

Classic from the early 90's

Really enjoyable brit pop with some pretty obvious influences. A few bad songs, including one that is fully in reverse that I’m sure at the time was inventive but is close to unlistenable, float around in the midst but it’s a fun listen.

A mix of some beautifully crafted, ethereal, thoughtful tracks and some chuntering, country like songs with yodeling vocals. Not sure what to make of this.

nie moj styl ale sympatyczne

yeah it’s aight

It’s ok. I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to it again.

This was an extremely nostalgic listening experience for me, which is pretty odd, considering id never heard this album beforehand. Not even a snippet. something about the echoey vocals and chill vibe just make it sound like a distant summer's memory. like something that'd play from my dad's shitty 30 year old boombox during a pool party. I fuck with that hard. Not every song did something special for me, but I liked it a lot all around. Strong 3, light 4

I remember being in the gym a few months ago when they were playing a post-punk playlist and Shazamming a song that came on that I really liked — it was "I Wanna Be Adored’ by The Stone Roses. So I was looking forward to listening to this album. In theory, I should really like this album. It starts out sounding like it's going to be a mix of post-punk (think the poppier hits of The Cure or Echo and the Bunnymen), Pixies-style surf/alt rock, and Byrds-style psychedelia. And the first three songs are pretty good. But after that, it kind of just falls apart for me. The lyrics are mostly lame, and the middle tracks start to blend together. It sounds like someone trying to mash up the music of The Byrds and Oasis with the cynical lyrics of The Smiths but ending up with the worst parts of all three. I'm not sure what they were thinking with “Elizabeth My Dear” — it's more of an interlude than a song, and the random insertion of a track set to “Scarborough Fair" is very jarring. It's giving big “I'm edgy like Moz" energy. “I am the Resurrection” is a decent song. I was really enjoying the jammy break down at the end — until it kept going for another five minutes. And the album closer, “Fools Gold” is an annoying retro throwback disco rock song that sounds like everything Fat Boy Slim did in the 90s. Meh. It's alright, but nothing amazing. I have no idea why Brits seem to revere this band so much. But I've never really understood the whole rave culture over there either. I feel like this is a band the writers of Skins would have been obsessed with in their youth. 3/5 (I might round it to a 3.5 in the right mood).

Hm. Ok, I guess.

Favorite track was (Song for My) Sugar Spun Sister. 3.5 rounded down to 3.

Not my style. Mellow rock, a little too soft for my tastes.

It’s ok. Kind of easy listening background music. I thought I caught a few ear worms, but nothing too captivating.

very nice. vocals are energetic and melody is has variations it can be too long without vocals sometimes or noisy. the whole album has lofi, country vibes but carries alot energy

Pretty good sound but nothing particularly caught me. One of the tracks was far too country for my tastes. Second to last one was really nice.

This was way more interesting than I thought and my pre conceptions of this album were that it sounded like Oasis, I was very wrong. Enjoyable!

It was fine. I'm having trouble remembering anything, but I remember thinking it was fine

Pretty decent, but not my thing. 3.3

Nice surprise

Fun rock album with some catchy riffs.

Very solid record. I was prepared to be "meh" but I enjoyed. Even heard some hints of jangle pop in there

The Stone Roses have a very distinctive sound. This album was alright, definitely listenable with some good tracks, but just didn’t quite cut it for me. It’s a 3.5 from mes

An album that was released at least 20 years too late. At the end of the 60s it would have been something but for the end of the 80s it sounds a bit tiring.

Great guitar sounds

good enough album, had a few decent songs, but probably won't listen to again

Lenge siden sist eg hørte da

I enjoyed the album as a whole, but i hated the third track.

Just didn’t hit like it used to.

This isn’t bad. Not great, but I would listen to some of this again. Maybe.

I liken this to vanilla ice cream, or margherita pizza. It's a bit bland, maybe even boring if put next to other better albums, but I do enjoy vanilla ice cream and a slice of margherita so I'm not complaining

It's one of those albums that's a precursor to about a dozen sub-genres, while belonging to none of them.

Thoughts before listening: This album is a really big deal to British music journalists, but never really made much of an impact in the US. I think I've listened to it and it's fine. Late 80s/early 90s British alternative rock that was part of the Madchester scene of dance punk bands. Review: I don't really get the hype with these guys. There are definitely some good songs here such as "I am the Resurrection", but all in all they're just a fairly normal sounding post-new wave alt rock band. There are some 60s era psychedelic call backs and maybe a couple nods to dance music, but ultimately this is a poppy indie rock album. I feel like the Stone Roses are just another (maybe the first?) in the line of overhyped British bands i.e. Oasis, Blur, Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay, Libertines, etc. None of these bands are bad, and they all have some great songs, but they just don't blow me away. 3-stars

This sounds like the spiritual predecessor to Oasis. Overall I thought it was alright, but I didn't like it as much as I thought I would have. It could be something that requires more listening for me to get into. Perhaps something to do in the future...

plätschert so vor sich hin , aber schön

Rocky but easy listening. Not what I'm into

Not my type. But its okay

6 / 10 Pre Brit-pop. No està mal.

good enough album, had a few decent songs, but probably won't listen to again

I'm not familiar with these guys, should be good to explore a new band. Right off the bat, I'm digging the artwork. Good, fun, jingly pop-rock. Some interesting psychedelic elements, with reversed looping effects. Lots of good/fun songs on here but not my favorite. Probably a band I will be revisiting, though. 3/5

One of the classics for a certain clientele

I really couldn’t get into this one

A pleasant, if unremarkable, listen. The most interesting part is that (aside from 1-2 tracks) this album could have been made in almost any decade. I actually was thinking it was a late 90s/early 00s album at first, then started wondering if it was from the 60s. Turns out it came out in '89.

Good album, better for certain laid back moods

Schöner Indie Rock aus England.

It's OK... A bit of indie rock feel. Almost more backround music than something engaging and front and center

A fine psychedelic, pinger-infused classic. The bedrock of indie, twee, and the beginning of the end for Ian Brown. 3/5

Good old brit pop guitar band

Interesting and easy to listen to sound. Not particularly memorable but would listen to again.

I liked the folky vocal harmonies. Pretty easy listening in general. Yacht rock esque.

I surprisingly really enjoyed the second half of this album, it was enticing and upbeat.

Opzich dik, maar typische britpop dus ik geef maar drie sterren. Het feit dat Don’t Stop een deel reverse Waterfall is vind ik goud. Favo nummer. I Am the Ressurection.

i really enjoyed a few songs, but it's not my favorite kind of music. very cinematic music, would fit greatly in a movie !

Pretty good

Nothing stands out about this. Rather boring actually.

Made of stone is a cool song. Pretty solid album, has belle & sebastian and decemberists vibes.

One more band!

It was ok

I liked it although it is missing some hits. "Fools Of Gold" at the end messes it up a bit. 2,5

The album isn't bad enough to call it a "bait and switch" but if you're gonna throw two incredible singles in the first two slots on the album, you better have at least one incredible single in the second half.

idk it was decent ig

Nice background music, toe tapping rock with upbeat beat. - Driving South is pretty good blues/southern rock

Great first song, many other good ones. Very nice stuff

Overhyped. Some good songs there though

Pretty good but could get a bit snoozy at times

Every tune on display here is catchy and interesting, but most of them don’t really appeal to me. I really dig the guitar tones and harmonies, but vocals sometimes bring it down for me.
