Every time I am asked to review a Neil Young album I feel I have to remark on my opinion of the limitations of the vocals. In the rock setting of Crazy Horse he largely gets away with it. However, in this album with its quieter more reflective vibe it is a real issue. Why have other more accomplished singers doing the backing vocals? On the positive side the songs are strong which makes it a more frustrating listen
just not my thing. i have never been much of a folk fan and this does not defy the expectation. the first two tracks sound so sleepy to me and the rest are alright at best. there's some upbeat moments here and there but the overall experience is pretty flaccid. with that said this is just boring at worst. nothing particularly offensive to the ears

It's really too bad he couldn't get someone else to sing his songs. I've never been a fan of that voice, but listening to this entire album makes me feel justified in that. Great Canadian, but horrible singer, not sure how he became as big as he did, but I guess Justin Bieber did too and he's also a horrible singer.
Can't help it. I do not care for Neil young or his music. I find it enervating spiritually for the most part and the songs I can enjoy modestly are too infrequent.

Pretty dull innit
Not really a huge fan of Neil young’s voice. Some of the songs seemed very out of place for this album.
Definitely definitely not for me. After so much fanfare I expected something different, but this was boring..
This was better than the last Neil Young album I got here, but it still was not for me. The man is prolific, but his songs are so boring.

Interesting, never listened to this before. Confirmed I just don't like Neil Young. Thought a Hot in Herre was going to break out at one point, but no such luck. It's ok.

On the Weekend started off really strong. The rest just didn’t do it for me. I’ve always disliked heart of gold. The other songs were just bland. A real disappointment. I’ve never really been a Neil young fan and I hoped this would be great but this wasn’t it

Didn’t think this album was as great as I thought it would be/as I’d heard it was.
1. Out on the Weekend - 6 It's simply. Overly simple. The guitar sounds very lovely but it's restricted to a very very simple chord that feels like it wants to express itself further before having to give way to what is a brilliant harmonica. When the harmonica stops, the monotony of the second verse resumes, taking way the most joyous part of the song. 2. Harvest - 3 An even more simplistic song in both lyric and instrument. Gone are the bigger chords on the guitar and the enjoyment of the harmonica from the previous track. 3. A Man Needs a Maid - 1 Just an awful track. 4. Heart of Gold - 5 Instrumentally great but lyrically a bit boring. Harmonica is used incredibly effectively on the track. Guitar sounds excellent as well. 5. Are You Ready For The Country? - 6 Solid sounding guitars. Piano is a lovely touch as well. Lyrically it's good as well. Nothing that will overwhelm you but not bad either. 6. Old Man - 5 Another decent track that's right in the middle in terms of quality. I'd say mediocre but too many people think that's a negative. Chorus is very good to be fair to the track. 7. There's A World - 2 The orchestral sound is excellent but lyrically it is extremely weak. "We are leaving we are gone" is part of an example of that. On top of that the orchestra drowns a line or two out here or there. Then the song slows down and it just feels like random lines made to rhyme with each other with no purpose or meaning. Just overall a weak track. 8. Alabama - 7 Great track. Guitar sound is superb on the track and the vocals sound really good. Chorus is very enjoyable as well with an awesome guitar solo leading out of it. Best track on the album. 9. The Needle and the Damage Done - 7 Great slow track. Vocals are awesome and the guitar builds and fades brilliantly in and out of the vocals. 10. Words (Between the Lines of Age) - 6 Good sounds but it is essentially just a minimal amount of lyrics before a jam session. The jam session is decent and eventually ends back into another verse. All around an okay track. Average Rating: 4.80 Adjusted to a 5-Point Scale: 2.40 Rounded Down: 2 Stars

I must be the only person that cannot listen to Neil Young. It's meh music, it's a high-pitched nasal voice. It's too annoying to play in the background and too boring to actively listen to.

This music makes me sad, and not in a good way. HOWEVER, for some reason, Alabama was hitting just right. I blame the bass line.
Again, not really my jam. The songs are great musically but Neil just doesn’t connect with me.
I went in with an open mind and gritted teeth. Neil Young’s voice still grates on me like a rusty rake across a chalkboard, and frankly, that made this album hard to enjoy—even when the instrumentation had potential. “Heart of Gold” and “Old Man” might’ve landed better sung by, say, literally anyone else. And don’t even get me started on “A Man Needs A Maid”—a song that manages to be both musically bloated and lyrically cringe. In short: Harvest is a maybe-almost-OK album trapped inside the body of a man wailing through a tin can. Please, 1001 list, let this be my Neil Young quota. I’ve served my time.

I literally screamed "uuuugh, noooo" when I saw this come up. I just listened to the worst Neil Young album 2 days ago (Tonight's the Night), and now I have to listen to another one. I understand there are 7 god-awful Neil Young albums on this list...only 3 more to go. What a dull and uninspiring work this is and it's made all the worse with that whiny, shrill voice.
1. Out on the Weekend (4:34) - 7/10 Love the melodies and I'm a sucker for harmonica 2. Harvest (3:11) - 7/10 Great lyricism here too 3. A Man Needs a Maid (4:05) - 5/10 Kinda reminds me of Chris de Burgh in A Spaceman Came Traveling but I didn't like it too much unfortunately, the lyrics weren't my cup of tea 4. Heart of Gold (3:07) - 5/10 5. Are You Ready for the Country? (3:25) - 6/10 6. Old Man (3:24) - 6/10 I like the backing vocals and the chorus is great 6. There's a World (2:59) - 4/10 Really don't like this one :( 7. Alabama (4:02) - 6/10 Slightly better form 8. Yay, another album from the Southern rock-elevator music sub-genre. It's only Young's grating vocals that keep reminding me I'm currently listening to anything at all.
47/1001 The worst time to give me this was straight after effing Gram Parsons - it's a bit more inventive and original, granted, but Harvest still has a big fat country-rock spine running through it. Sadly, for me, this is another artist that just leaves me cold. A poor man's Dylan in my eyes - hell, the first track is just I Shall Be Released played sideways. The lyrics don't do anything for me, if anything they seem pretty heavy-handed and dull. And don't give me that "you just don't get it - he means the opposite of what he is saying" bullshit, there is definitely some misogyny at the core of A Man Needs A Maid. A cut above the trad-country hell of Parsons this may be, but the production and arrangements are still pretty uninspiring to me - and I know there are a wad of popular songs on here - the incongruous orchestration on There's A World was the only highlight for me. In a nutshell, a mid-tempo, country-tinged rock journey through Americana that rarely breaks out of a shuffle, accompanied by a tramp with a whiny voice banging on about lost loves, regrets, drug abuse and generally in desperate need of some cheering up. If that's your bag, this album is for you. Personally, I don't see the appeal.
Oh Neil ... Why do you keep showing up on this list...? Tho, maybe this is the album to show up on the list, it's hard for me to find the enjoyment of Neil Young in present day music. Johnny Cash, with the assistance of Rick Rubin and American Records was able to reinvent himself and introduce his music to a new audience. Johny Cash has this man's man brand attached to him. He goes to prisons to play music, sings about cocaine disappointment personal struggles small towns and God. Neil Young, has a whiny voice and loves to complain and protest. He's pulled his music off of Spotify because of their support for Joe Rogan. He points fingers at backwoods souther states, music and bands, holds benefit concerts for handicapped children. And tho he made attempts to introduce himself to newer audiences by touring with Sonic Youth, his appeal has fallen flat and remained in the hearts and minds of generations before our own.

I can imagine people raving about this (especially harmonica lovers). Not really my thing, apart from some classics like Heart of Gold
Some of these tracks are really, really good. The vibe of the album is certianly potent, but nothing really grabs you. A classic album that is a must listen from this list, but nothing super unique about this one
They're really loading me up with Neil Young aren't they. Though this one seemed to contain some of his most popular songs (according to Spotify), I actually found it to be a little boring in places. Certainly the least interesting album of the four of his I've had thus far. Still some good stuff here though. 'Harvest' is a lovely track, 'Alabama' is solid rock tune, and I still don't think that Neil Young is whining. Not technically the best singer but a certain charm to it. I didn't enjoy this as much as the Neil Young album I had a couple of days ago which I rated a three, so I can't go higher than a two for this one I'm afraid.

This album has not aged well for me. I remember being ambivalent about it at the time. I enjoyed some of it, but was mostly underwhelmed. I guess I feel the same about his entire oeuvre.

Neil Young is one of those artists I've absolutely, utterly failed to connect with or appreciate on any level. We're talking about four decades of me going "ugh" every time I hear one of his songs. So I tried to go into this with an open mind, I really did, but... Ugh. Too slow, too melancholy, too folk/country. I just don't like Neil Young.
Neil should try to make his voice less grating.

The musician in me is saying "hell yeah this is excellently written" but the person in me who just enjoys good sounding music isn't getting along with this sound. This didn't really capture me, and his voice felt whiny and average.
I feel like Neil Young is pretty hit or miss. But his misses aren't really bad, they're just kinda whatever. Old Man is the standout track & still a bop.

this pretty stinky honestly. i'm not gonna pretend like it's objectively garbage but it's so boring man his voice just doesn't do it for me. admittedly the only folk i've listened to before this and enjoyed was comus, but country is just such a better genre. lynyrd skynyrd was right about this dude. i'll give it the last 3 songs tho, those had a live sound or they were live, idk which, and they were more eventful songs. alabama probably the best song on here. that one was pretty cool. the rest were just really slow and nothing much happened in them and i don't remember them. same reason i don't rlly mess with radiohead or pink floyd. they kind of sound like this but different genres.
I’ve come to the conclusion that Neil Young just doesn’t do anything for me. I don’t like whiny vocal tone. I don’t like the real lack of variety here. I really felt nearly no emotion while listening to this. I want to get it, but I just don’t. I would way rather listen to Willie Nelson or Gordon Lightfoot, which are constant favorites.

This one is a big ol’ snooze festival, though the energy did pick up as the album progressed. There’s something very lonely about the sound of this music that I don’t enjoy? I would have to be in a highly specific mood.
I wanted to like this album more than some of Mr. Young’s other work on this list, because it is a good deal less whiny and complainy, but, in the end, it’s no less unbearably dull. Following this album, Spotify kicked into a playlist of recommended artists (since we like Neil, theoretically), some of whom are pretty mediocre (Croce, Cale, Rodríguez), and all of whom, for the next four hours, were more pleasant than Neil Young.
I didn't love this one. "Heart of Gold" is great and I thought "Alabama" was pretty good as well, but the only other track that stood out to me was the one about a maid, and it was honestly pretty awful. Just barely better than two stars, but I'm not feeling generous today.

Wow, this sucked. I know I’m in the minority, but I’ve always disliked Neil Young. In spite of that, I did my very best to go into this album with an open mind. I think I’m just generally sensitive to the sound and quality of vocals. If those bother me, I have a hard time getting past it (Rush is a good example). This makes sense since I rarely focus on the lyrics and instead just hear the whole production, with the vocals essentially serving as an instrument. So if I find the vocals grating, that’s a big part of the mix that I dislike. And I absolutely hate Neil Young’s voice. It’s hard for me to hear anything else. I’m not sure how he became so popular with those shaky, weak-ass vocals. If not for some solid instrumentation on a couple tracks (slide guitar on Are You Ready for the Country, finger picking on Old Man, guitar solos on Words), this would be 1/5. I really disliked this album. It’s like John Denver without any of the heart and Dylan without any of the soul. Old Man is a solid track, though. 2/5 Highlights: Old Man
Still don't get Neil Young.
I wish somebody gave this man a shot of caffeine. This album is better than other Neil Young records I have listened to before but it's so laid back it's really monotonous. Don't get me wrong, the man has talent and the songs are good, but also a snoozefest altogether.

I'm not a country fan at all. This was inoffensive but not something I would listen to again.
I never really listened to Neil Young before. And I am definitely not going to start. I liked the final track, Words, the most. A handful of songs I like the instrumentals, but I'm so turned off by everything else across all the songs - Neil's voice, the lyrics, etc. Definitely not my style and I'm not really looking forward to listening to more music by him in this list.
Gosh words can’t describe the hatred I have for this man’s voice. I just think he’s so overrated (I know I’ll get killed for that) but I can’t stand his nasally whiny voice. I do recognize he has incredible influence especially with CSNY and I love them. So i’ll give him credit for that, however despite his incredible influence I dislike him.
Neil Young is a songwriting genius. What I find less enjoyable is his performance of the songs. Aside from the classic songs of "Heart of Gold" and "Old Man," which are iconic, I don't connect very well with the rest of the songs.

I just don’t like his voice. Old Man is a favorite across covers but A Man Needs a Maid left a bad taste in my mouth that followed the whole track list.
This 2 has some qualifiers. 90% of this album was a drag. It felt plodding, shallow, and empty. It made me tired to listen to, like nothing going on most of the time and when it picked up neil proceeded to drag it back into tired slumber. That said, "The Needle and The Damage" and "Words" saved this album from 1 territory for me. Both tracks synergized well with Neil's style and I felt myself getting into the songs when his vocals came in instead of groaning.
I don't like the song about the maid omfg. Overall, did not enjoy. That's probably controversial. Oh well. 2/5

This was a tough listen. Really did not like this album. A Man Needs a Maid is terrible. It all just kind of sounded like whiny country music performed by a man who can't sing well. There were maybe two songs on this album that were decent, but the rest I would be perfectly okay with never having to hear again.

Bit dull for my tastes
This is my second Neil Young album and the guy is obviously not for me. I find his singing very flat and all the songs much the same, with A Man Needs a Maid sounding like some kind of a parody. I was trying to decide between 2 and 3 stars but since I've skipped a few songs i.e. didn't listen to them all the way to the end, I've decided on 2*.
I dislike country-inflected rock and pop, and I don't care for Neil Young's voice (sorry!). So this album sits well outside my usual envelope of taste. the only track on the album I knew before I played it was 'Heart of Gold', and that irritates me. I did like 'The Needle and the Damage Done". 2/5

Favourite Song: Old Man The orchestral moments seem to contrast the more folky. While nothing overly captured me, I did enjoy the blend of genres. Unfortunately, the album was not available on Spotify which did slightly alter the listening experience as I had to use YouTube. I don't imagine the original release had a McDonald's ad midway through.
Yeah, Neil Young is Neil Young, and Harvest isn't a relevation in that regard. It sounds like pretty much everything else he's done and particularly similar to earlier efforts. This is lazy, I don't like his voice, and it's telling that he has to have a star-studded list of collaborators to try to elevate it. Even the supposedly seminal Heart Of Gold isn't great by any standard. He's a wannabe Bob Dylan who never ever ever got close to that quality of output. 2, and that's generous.
Either I'm being beaten into submission or this is just one of the betterNeil youngs albums of the many ones on this cursed list. But it's still Neil Young, knock a star off for the overspill of crap I've had to listen to.
Not my jam
Neil I've had a few run ins with before. His voice really grates with me in a way very few others artists do. The instrumentation and stuff is fine here, although the production is doing a bit of whatever the 70s music equivalent of putting vaseline on the lens is.
If you want to intentionally age and distress a human, apply this album

Slow burn, gets better further into the album. You just need patience and be in the mood to listen to a guy sing long and slow. Honestly enjoyed the instruments more than the lyrics.
Favorite songs: Heart of Gold; Old Man; The Needle and Damage Done To be honest the two singles stand out. But listening to The Needle and the Damage Done was new to me. Words was a good fitting end to the album.

It was another Neil Young album. It wasn't awful but it wasn't particularly good. It is pretty whiney. I was familiar with a couple of songs. I do not see myself revisiting this album again.
Third Neil Young album for this challenge. The other two I rated a 3/5. This one was quite a drudge to get through. Even the couple of relatively upbeat numbers felt weighed down. There were a couple of weirdly overproduced tracks, "A Man Needs a Maid" and can't remember the other one, that felt out of place. I'll take "Heart of Gold" and "Old Man" and you can keep the rest.

Neil Young has an annoying whiny voice, plays harmonica and guitar, and writes deep and meaningful songs. Like a rockier Bob Dylan. With a better voice. And I think - probably - better songs. Old Man is iconic; Needle and the Damage Done is perfectly suited for Neil's voice. Not feeling the love for the rest of it, some good music dragged down by the singing.
this was a pretty low vibrational experience for me because I had to listen on YouTube music on a mobile browser, sucked, also I was having a terrible day sorry to neil for not giving this album a second chance while I was cooking my mung beans but I would have had to keep my phone screen on so the music wouldn't pause which is dumb as fuck. the 3 or 4 songs I listened to were alright but I really like Crosby stills Nash and young, and this album was nowhere near as good as their music to me

I think I’ve only heard a few Neil Young songs. I know that he’s one of the bigwigs of classic rock, and yet my knowledge of him and his music is pretty minimal. Let’s change that today! Songs I already knew: Heart Of Gold Favourites: Heart Of Gold To be honest, I’m really quite underwhelmed. I was expecting the music of some kind of rock god, but it was more the moanings of a tired old man. I don’t know how old he was when this was actually recorded, but this is how it came across to me. Heart Of Gold definitely stands out more than the rest, with Old Man being another that was at least somewhat memorable. Otherwise, this just wasn’t for me and didn’t really float my boat.
I was only able to listen to a couple of tracks on the platform (Spotify) so couldn’t give it a proper hearing.

I have no desire to listen to neil young solo records. I will listen to him with nscy but not by him self. He attacked only creator on spotify who talking about alternatives to the COVID vaccines but not insensuated them.So then he and bunch of other creators threw there songs off. and took him out of spotify so now i don't way to listen. Now if thinking why I reviewed the big black album even when he took it off. I think honestly that Mr. Steve Albani was getting frustrated with spotify not paying there creators or musicians as you call them fair livable wages and I think that very admiral. So to make long short I will not listen to Neil Young solo shit.
Neil Young is a hack and his songs are boring as hell. This album is no exception. The fake western twang and lazy slide guitar riffs stink of nostalgia for a past that never existed. The only reason this isn't a 1-star album is the musical performances, when divorced from Young's lyrical bullshit, are pretty solid. Tim Drummond in particular does work with his bass lines and that deserves recognition.

The slow, somber timbre of the album now makes sense when you learn that Neil Young had a broken back and recorded this at his farm, where he literally couldn't play any other instrument other than an acoustic guitar. Whilst it does provide some grandeur and atmosphere, The London Symphony Orchestra is able to lift the album in parts a little, however sadly, it doesn't provide much in the way of lifting the album up entirely. Best: Heart of Gold Worst: A Man Needs A Maid Note: Most of this album is not available on Spotify so had to find a YouTube stream of it (thankfully not too difficult).

It’s been a while since I listened to this but from what I remember I wouldn’t mind just having it on in the background if I’m doing something mindless. Some heavy topics, like many other albums we’ll come across.

Neil Young's fourth album was the best selling album of 1972. It is a folk rock album that was immediately popular with fans - but not critics - at release, supported by the hit singles "Old Man" & "Heart of Gold". Some songs were good while others were not as good, but the good songs outweigh the bad. Not my type of music, but I can appreciate the production.

Some really nice tracks with soul and feeling, with a smattering of tracks that felt a bit like a over indulgent children's pantomime. Definitely hasn't made me feel like I would lose out for not ever hearing it.

Really not my style. Some lyrics honestly felt like it was just him ranting with a friend on the phone. It's as if he's focusing on rhyming first, and the idea behind as an afterthought. The melodies were also pretty safe and uninspired (but good harmonica). "Are you ready for the country" and "The Needle and the damage done" were the better ones.

Loved the guitar, but the album itself was definitely too slow for me.
Okay for background music, but not interesting enough to really listen intently to imo. Plus none of the lyrics really speak to me and some are a bit iffy. And his voice (and maybe pronunciation) does not sound great to me. The instrumental parts were better than with vocals.

I can see why Harvest is considered a classic, but it just didn't click with me. I found most of the album pretty boring and slow-paced, and a lot of the songs blended together without leaving much of an impression. There were definitely moments where the melodies stood out—they're warm, memorable, and probably the album's strongest quality—but they weren't enough to keep me engaged throughout. I also felt the pacing dragged, and the understated production, while intentional, made the record feel a bit too mellow for my taste. I can appreciate its influence on folk and country rock and understand why so many people love its intimate, reflective style, but personally I found it more admirable than enjoyable.
Heart of Gold is a top ten song. The rest of the album is typical of Young's solo work: not for me.

Not because it’s the worst thing I’ve ever heard, but because it’s boring, whiny, and baffling to me why Neil young had a career beyond CSNY. Another incredibly lifeless Neil Young album. What do people see in this? The music has no heart and is completely predictable, relying on a single motif that just repeats endlessly without any development whatsoever. Furthermore, it commits the twin sins of harmonica and steel guitar (in places). His voice is mediocre at best, and his lyrics range from whining to moronic. This album is uninspired, unchallenging, humdrum slop. 0.5/5.0: Unlistenable
