Reviews (page 12 of 13)

3.5/5, some nice folk, would probably go up to a 4 on second listen. some parts are a little bland though

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Out on the Weekend, A Man Needs a Maid, Heart of Gold, Old Man, There's a World, Alabama Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: When I'm in a relaxed mood this is very good music. When I'm not this is horribly boring music. Not as sonically interesting as the album with Crazy Horse was, and thus I greatly preferred that album (gave it a 5). This is worse than that album, but it's still pretty good. 3.5 that I'm going to round down because I have to be in the mood for this specific kind of laid-back-but-not-too-laid-back rock.

I don't have a strong opinion, either positive or negative, about Neil Young and this album. It's pretty good and wasn't annoying to listen to.

ye not bad

nice album, not quite to my taste but still an alright album

Im not crazy about the tonality of neils voice but the tracks are wonderfully arranged. Heart of Gold deserves all the praise it gets. Alabama is a good diss the south country song. Great guitar work on the whole album

Not a fan of Neil Young's voice. I thought it was just bad as an old aging rocker, but it looks like it was bad in 1972 as well. Musically it was okay, but I can't see past the whiney vocals.

Couple of not bad songs, overall not terrible but wasn't amazed. 3/5

I could play this album on harmonica

daora mas n impressiona. varias vezes mudei minha opinião quanto a voz do cara durante o álbum; as vezes achava bem mais ou menos beirando o irritante, as vezes achava lindo

Maybe not Youngs best album, it is one that displays some great guitar work and a nice folk/country rock inspiration. A good outing without any standouts but a consistent outcome.

Thot it was better than previous album until a man needs a maid. This obviously wouldn’t be something spoken about now. Best song probably a heart of gold

Production: 13/20 Songwriting: 12/20 Innovation: 10/20 Bangers: 5/20 Emotional response: 10/20 =50 Yeah not bad cheers Neil

It was earnest and the best i’ve heard Neil Young.

Not bad

A little slow but easy background music.

Jó számok, főleg az album közepe, de magamtól nem hallgatnám meg többször. Nem vált ki érzéseket belőlem.

A legendary album, a lot samples used in this song. It is getting hot in here.

Already listened, eh, its okay

I really enjoyed Old Man. I'm sure the lyrics were very relevant at a time. I know Neil Young can write some bangers, but this style is not really for me overall.

Easy to see the appeal of this record, but wasn't for me.

чуть-чуть до четверочки не дотянул=)

Pleasant

Sounds a bit miserable. Cheer up mate

This is beautiful! "A Man Needs a Maid" kinda sucks, but "Heart of Gold" is awesome and it's just kinda raw and emotional, love!

Had heard of a few songs before. Would listen to again

sooookay

An album of his that actually has one of the few songs from him that I actually enjoy hearing and yet this album still sooooo freaking boring. And on songs like "A Man Needs a Maid", even though I know the subtext, it still comes off as a little creepy and needy. Harvest is not a moving examination of the human condition. It is the slow agonizing inexorable sound of a fart that goes on for 37 minutes. And just like a fart; you know like one from a black bean burrito, there some parts that have more intensity than other bits, but at the end of the day, it all just stinks. All of Neil Young songs would sound better with just about anyone else singing them. Anyone else other than Neil Young that is. Having seen him perform live at the Portland Waterfront in the early 90s, I say this with a bit more legitimacy. Most bearable: "Heart of Gold"

It's ok, not really my thing.

It's not horribly bad, but his voice, the lyrics and the music all sound so incredibly clumsy and cringe, I just cannot listen to it.

I have learned through this exercise that I don’t just dislike Neil Young. I STRONGLY dislike him. It’s almost a physical aversion. And while I admit this album has value in the history of rock, while it has undeniably influenced many, imao - it sucks. So… 2 Boolean: true, suffer you must at times my child

Parts of it could be nice on times, but imagining his face always stops the joy. Also, his voice has too high a pitch.

Partially known. OK.

meh, no takie ze juz srednio

Yea this one didn’t really hook me that much. It doesn’t feel like the more traditional country I really enjoy

I already know this is gonna be a sleeper ahh album. Like I get the grandeur, and it sounds nice, but it's such a niche feeling for me, I guess I've just never been in the southern states or like alabama.... Ok some of the songs are so annoying ngl Only carried by that one song tbh

fav songs: harvest heart of gold mellow, laidback, gentle 50/100

The style is not for me the harmonica, the voice and the instruments were it for me generous 3.1/10

– 140272 (кантри рок; фольк рок) ♡: heart of gold; alabama; old man 2/10 абсолютно не то, что мне нравится в музыке и дослушать было довольно тяжело. факт: лучший канадский альбом того времени

Inexplicably not my thing. Makes no sense. It's alright

After 3 albums so far, my general opinion of Neil Young remains: fine?

He thought he ate.

i already know about this one lmao 4/10

I have now listened to two Neil Young albums. The voice remains high, nasal, and fragile. It remains, for me, deeply Mickey Mouse. "Heart of Gold" is genuinely lovely — probably his most accessible song, and it earns it. The rest of Harvest follows the same pattern as After the Gold Rush: well-crafted songs I couldn't quite get past the delivery to fully appreciate. Apparently I own a Neil Young vinyl. It's in the dragon's den. It can stay there. 2/5 — consistent.

309/1089 my main rule with this project is that if i “like”/save a song then the album is automatically worth 2 stars at least even if the rest of the album would be 1 star. Old Man saved this album from being a 1 star for me, then Words did too. just not my style really 27/100

Will not listen to again, but ok.

Музыка неплохая, но голос крайне унылый и раздражающий

This and On the Beach are his least offensive albums. But his pretentious anti-musicality, smug, overly earnest, and overly sentimental lyrics, and his childlike song smithing are all front and center. I can forgive any of it except the anti-musicality. It's the same with fraud Dylan. Part of the Rock and Roll ethos is passion over prowess. But it has to be genuine to be moving. Neil's "rusticity," whether in his voice or his bizarre guitar leads, is so affected it's nauseating.

This album completely changed my opinion of Neil Young. I used to think he was an talentless boring whiner, and was looking forward to giving it a one-star rating. Now I think he's a very talented boring whiner, and if I'm in the mood for that then I will play it again. That warrants an extra star!

Look, Neil Young just isn't that great he has way to much hype for what he produces. This album has heart of gold which is a good song, but I think the majority of the songs would improve if Neil wasn't singing

This was uninteresting and dull. Nothing about this stood out for me. Like the last Neil Young album I had on this list, it’s just boring. Good for what it is I guess, but unless you were there when it came out it makes little impact now to someone who’s never heard it in 2026.

Like Crosby Still Nash and Young but Neil alone is not my jam

It’s alright

not full listen

Heart of Gold is so good. But Neil Young is so boring.

Old man and heart of gold are the quintessential wartime ballads from this album. I hadn't heard this album prior, only the greatest hits. At the time, im certain there could have been deep meaning gleaned from the folksy overtones and impassioned lyrics. Through the lens of hindsight, the sentiments this album conveys come across as disingenuous or hypocritical. Although that statement is probably more aimed at the generation this artist and album are targeted at.

This is probably the most simultaneously decent but dull album I’ve listened to in a while. The instrumentals & vocal delivery are strong, and the song-writing definitely feels coherent and well put together. But overall it completely failed to grab me. I found the whole thing ultimately quite boring and dreary, as if it needed a spark of energy with a couple of more upbeat tracks. 5/10.

Dang. Just can’t get into Neil.

I don't think I love this album very much. It's not bad but I didn't like the overall vibe.

This is something Woody from Toy Story would listen to but unfortunately I'm a Buzz Lightyear kind of guy.

actually do not enjoy, I like out on the weekend, heart of gold, are you ready for the country strong dislike Words, A man needs a maid, there's a world. terrible songs

opening and closing tracks (out on the weekend / words between the lines of age) are the most listenable and ... least questionable in terms of subject matter in my opinion this is one of his weaker albums DON'T shoot me. i just think after the gold rush and rust never sleeps are better as whole bodies of work over harvest. sorry neil young but rust never sleeps was a generational run

Decent instrumentals. Did not like the vocals. Questionable lyrics.

Not bad. Not great. Not offensive. Not memorable. Don't quite get the hype.

Finally caught up, just in time for Neil Young's fifth swing at the ball. Ol' Neil has technically struck out after a at least three whiffs but much like an uncoordinated child on the t-ball field, we've afforded him a few more swings. I had high hopes for this as it lurched into gear. His nasally voice works well with the slower, more folksy stuff and when he's not doing overblown DAD BLUES. Accidental CAPS lock there but it seemed to fit. I've left far worse things in this accursed box blinking before me on previous occasions. This still kind of sucks, I'm sorry. God. I wanted to like this one a lot. The maid song was sort of funny as an absurd ballad, but it overstayed its welcome and led into more boring/horribly sung songs. This is better than previous Neil Young efforts, but I just can't get behind this guy. BACK TO WINNIPEG. 2 HIGHLIGHTS: I give myself the Grover falsetto and sing constantly. Can I be a pseudo-folk icon?

It's nkt that bad

This was a good album. I liked this Neil.

Some classics like old man and heart of gold but a bit dull otherwise

Slow to white for my taste

was fairly good tbf wouldn't listen again 4/10

I'm not a big fan of pure Country, although this album was interesting and I understand it's popularity by listening to the songs. It is just not my cup of tea.

Rock again... who do they think I am?! An old white man?! Give me some electronic please :( Let me actually listen to this all the way through tho for day 2...

Soft country, okay maar niet geweldig. Heart of gold van otis redding maar dan niet de versie die ik ken

no es la gran cosa, muy tranquilo para mi gusto

it’s fine i guess? i liked it at the start but got boring by the end

Not for me

I suppose I should like Neil Young but I could never understand what people see in him, and I find his voice rather grating. Sorry and all that.

I think some of the backing musicianship on this might be good to great (?) but it is sooooo hard to tell because of his pathetic, soft, nasal and annoying vocals.

Just don’t get it. I don’t like his voice and the music’s okay

Typische Neil Young Sound. Klingt ein bisschen angestaubt, nicht stört aber es begeistert auch keiner der Songs so wirklich. 2/5

Utterly simple music. I do not like you, Neil Young.

Plenty of pompous lyrics, irritating harmonica, and bloated production all over this record. Neil Young’s voice has grown on me over the years, but I can’t say I enjoy what he’s singing about. The London Symphony Orchestra stuff doesn’t suit him at all. Are You Ready For the Country is pretty wretched. Old Man is part of a good song but it’s ruined by the grating backing vocals. The 2nd half finally has 2 minutes I enjoy without reservations. The Needle and the Damage Done is just a great song. Telling that it’s just Young and a guitar. The final track didn’t bother me but I was ready for it to be over by then. I think there may be a Neil Young recording out there I’d enjoy, but this ain’t it.

Plano, tiene lindas melodías y buenas guitarras ,pero recae y se vuelve tedioso.

S’alright

No me gustó. Rescato una parte: To give a love, you gotta live a love To live a love, you gotta be part of When will I see you again?

no es mi onda pero bastante bien

Thought I'd enjoy this more. So wingey though.

decent. i think it is repititive, but all in all a few enjoyable songs. not something i probably would listen to again in its entirety

His voice is so terrible

Nej detta behöver jag inte höra igen. För mycket country-känsla för mig.

Soft and country ish,

Not resonating with me. Can't grab onto it besides a few of the songs. Seems pretty weak as an album 2/5

The hits are still fun, but the albulm as a whole lacks energy or staying power for me with Young's flat and repetitive vocals and unexceptionable backing band.

who LISTENS to this? it's kermit the frog singing over an acoustic guitar about how sad and lonely he is. "a man needs a maid" a man needs to get a job and stay away from her!!!! this is practically white noise to me. it's rambling drivel. some of them are almost decent to my ear in terms of their instrumentation, but i cannot get over his voice. nails on chalkboard. the highlight of this are the extended instrumental sections such as on "words" where i could listen to music.

didnt like it

Not my fav

Even though this is the third Neil Young album I've been given and I'm not a fan, it was an aptly named album as I was in the process of harvesting an orchard of mangoes. I let the album blend in with the breeze as it rustled the leaves and I thought well, it's not a bad album for the context. 'Heart of Gold' and 'The needle and the damage done' were the only tracks I previously knew and I've heard them too many times already to give them any more consideration. The other tracks were pleasant enough in a breezy orchard but it just feels dated and tired.

sounds like a teenagers first album, good guitar and alright piano but vocals and lyrics sound like something a kid thinks makes them profound and smarter than others

I'm really not excited to have to listen to 3 more of this guy's albums (ignoring the collabs). Neil is a good folk musician but I unfortunately don't like folk. I do appreciate that he's from TRONNO

Pretty unremarkable voice. Mellow, strong country influences. Nothing that grabbed me. I didn't really notice when it finished.

#258/1001. Neil Young lives s Rock'n'roll lifestyle: breaks his back renovating his home and goes acoustic. Makes his "signature" album, which has Heart of Gold (a song Dylan hated because it sounded too Dylan), which puts him on the move and fame, which "ends in a ditch". Goes on to rock, experiments (e.g. with metal, electronics, noise, grunge), back to acoustics and politically correctness. Rinse this and repeat, release every demo you ever done in the middle, end crazy horse live gigs with a 2-3 minute whining and wanking jam/ feedback - not just the gig but every goddamn song, which even Jarmusch couldn't document well enough to prevent me from leaving the movie in the middle in Midnight Sun Film Festival - or perhaps it was just the level of alcohol dropping in my blood or bladder which couldn't hold all the beer. That's all very Neil Young for me. I have tried to get inside Neil Young's music so many times, that it hurts. But no. Heart of Gold is a nice song, especially the Boney M version.

Some decent music, that’s not to my taste. A bit boring! 5/10 Decent

Didn’t care for it

American Wild West (oder South), Soft Rock, Soundtrack Music, aber eher langweilig und schwergängig, 2.5/5

Mwa, thought i would like it more

I just don't get Neil Young as a solo artist. Old Man is a nice song but I feel like I only really click with his music when he's part of a larger group.

можна слухати під особливий настрій, можливо в дорогу, але все ж трішки бісячий голос у цього виконавця

he sounds very whiny to me , a chore to get through to be honest

God this was a downer.

I'm trying to enjoy it, I really am. It's just that anything country adjacent makes me want to cut my ears off and also that stupid maid song just isn't helping.

Syntes ikke lige det fangede mig første gang jeg hørte det, men det vokser på mig jo mere jeg hører det… Er dog ikke specielt stor fan af den første halvdel af albummet, det er heller ikke dårlig dog

Enjoyed songs: Old man Songs from other albums: Hey, Hey, My, My Not very pleasant to the ear. No other album is worth it

Why Neil Young again? WHY? WHY SEVEN ALBUMS GOD WHY?? It's not that bad but not good either. By the end of this I feel like I'll just give him 1 star after 1 star cuz I'll be so goddamn fed up with all of his songs. What's the Americans' obsession with him? I actually don't get it that's a genuine question. He isn't big where I'm from I haven't heard of him until starting this challenge. Imagine my schock when I checked out his monthly listeners then googled him and WAIT HE'S NOT EVEN AMERICAN???? I thought he was some kind of national treasure. Please please to all the gods let it be so that I won't have to hear another one of his albums for at least a month. How is it even more boring than the one I got before?

Too slow for me

I love 60’s, 70’s music, but there’s a quality to his voice that’s only good in small doses. That said, the album’s short and classic. My favorites are Old Man, Alabama, and Heart of Gold. 4/10

I just finished listening to the album 💿. And although it's not my typical genre and I only added one song to my radio 📻 off the first listen 🎧. It was still cool to listen to while i journal 📓. I will be giving it a second listen and maybe then I will enjoy it more.

there are a few tolerable songs on here but its mostly just whiny garbage

Listening it at first it wasnt too bad, it felt like songs old people would dance to at the pub at the end of the movie or smthing. Its definitely to ones music taste whether they like this album or not. They is very different to my taste however i’m trying to keep an open mind and it’s kinda relaxing however halfway through the album it’s getting repetitive so I’m getting bored. I wanted to enjoy and listen out however I just can’t. I need some spice to it. I’ve finished and it’s boring to me sigh

Patrz: pozycja 169, "Rust Never Sleeps" Neila Younga.

okay…not for me

Personally feel like Neil just really liked to rhyme words.

The constant barrage of Neil Young, The Beatles, and Elvis Costello continue. I have already listened to enough Neil Young to know that I never want to endure another album by this muppet, but I’m sure there’s a dozen of them left on the way to 1001.

Sorry, Neil. I just don’t like you.

I wanted to like this, but besides the two popular songs the album was kind of flat (?) and monotonous

Pretty underwhelmed.

Ok. ★★

Meh. It's OK. Sonically, I like the dry mix of this album. It fits the songs. The drum mix is especially refreshing. I like the feel of the songs he recorded in the barn the best. The songs are well constructed and the lyrics expressive. The popularity of this album could be due to its simplicity, making it accessible to fans of many genres. This did have some crossover success on the country charts. But nothing really grabbed me. Overall, I would need to be in the right mood to listen to this. It's a solid two star for me. After a third listen a couple more songs grew on me but this still won't be one of my go-to albums. Favorite song: "Old Man"

It's ok but too bluesy for me.

Eh.....not his best.

Rein vom Namen habe ich mehr erwartet. Trotzdem solides Album.

This is a good album. The instruments are very high almost from the beginning of the song. I could not remember what the lyrics were about. I did like the last song, words

- - (quote discovered and taken from someone else's review:) "You go to a supermarket, and you see a faggot behind the fuckin’ cash register; you don’t want him to handle your potatoes.” - Neil Young. Yeah, you can F off Neil Young. - I like Heart of Gold and Old Man, and I hate that Maid song. - This felt like a long album for a short one. Nothing really captured me - it just felt like the songs didn’t really go anywhere. - Some melodies are nice enough, but not super memorable. And the music wasn’t interesting enough to make up for his voice. - I really dislike the cadence of the words with the music on There’s a World… it felt like reading a list. - Seems like he used the orchestra on the worst songs to try to fool us into thinking they weren’t awful. Sorry, Neil, it didn’t work. - I tried - I listened three times, but yeah, I won’t choose to listen to it again. Maybe if I want to wallow in self pity? - Also, people on this site rag on electronic music for being 4 on the floor and then laud this… sloooooow 4/4 and tons of songs that are one or maybe 2 (if we’re lucky) musical ideas. Make it make sense… lol

Can't handle this guy's voice, and I really tried to look past it this time. The rest of the instruments and song-writing are fine if not unimpressive, which really only leaves Neil's voice for much of the album. Alabama and Words were the only two tracks I found myself enjoying, probably because there were arrangements of other instruments to distract me from Neil's horrendous falsetto.

He's a gifted songwriter and this album is supposed to be amazing but I just don't get it. He has a mediocre voice and each song melodically sounds as canned as they come. Lyrics are on point, but I don't understand the appeal honestly. This is my first NY album on the list and I know I'm in for more disappointment.

This is soooo tame, lacking any energy. Doesn't resonate at all.

Rating: 5/10 Meh.

I get why people love it but it's just so bloody earnest. I want entertaining not a lecture on communism

Every time I am asked to review a Neil Young album I feel I have to remark on my opinion of the limitations of the vocals. In the rock setting of Crazy Horse he largely gets away with it. However, in this album with its quieter more reflective vibe it is a real issue. Why have other more accomplished singers doing the backing vocals? On the positive side the songs are strong which makes it a more frustrating listen

just not my thing. i have never been much of a folk fan and this does not defy the expectation. the first two tracks sound so sleepy to me and the rest are alright at best. there's some upbeat moments here and there but the overall experience is pretty flaccid. with that said this is just boring at worst. nothing particularly offensive to the ears

All the songs are the same

Clean your own damn room, Kermit. And stop bringing me down. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): N/A ⭐⭐: Didn't like it, didn't hate it. Saved no tracks.

не мое определенно

It's really too bad he couldn't get someone else to sing his songs. I've never been a fan of that voice, but listening to this entire album makes me feel justified in that. Great Canadian, but horrible singer, not sure how he became as big as he did, but I guess Justin Bieber did too and he's also a horrible singer.

Can't help it. I do not care for Neil young or his music. I find it enervating spiritually for the most part and the songs I can enjoy modestly are too infrequent.

Pretty dull innit

Not really a huge fan of Neil young’s voice. Some of the songs seemed very out of place for this album.

Definitely definitely not for me. After so much fanfare I expected something different, but this was boring..

This was better than the last Neil Young album I got here, but it still was not for me. The man is prolific, but his songs are so boring.

I will admit that Alabama and Old Man are bangers but that is all!!

Interesting, never listened to this before. Confirmed I just don't like Neil Young. Thought a Hot in Herre was going to break out at one point, but no such luck. It's ok.

Fuckede ikke helt med det, måske var jeg bare ikke lige i humør. Heart of gold var self god

On the Weekend started off really strong. The rest just didn’t do it for me. I’ve always disliked heart of gold. The other songs were just bland. A real disappointment. I’ve never really been a Neil young fan and I hoped this would be great but this wasn’t it

Nothing special for me - a bit too dreary and plodding. And I love a mopey song!

Didn’t think this album was as great as I thought it would be/as I’d heard it was.

1. Out on the Weekend - 6 It's simply. Overly simple. The guitar sounds very lovely but it's restricted to a very very simple chord that feels like it wants to express itself further before having to give way to what is a brilliant harmonica. When the harmonica stops, the monotony of the second verse resumes, taking way the most joyous part of the song. 2. Harvest - 3 An even more simplistic song in both lyric and instrument. Gone are the bigger chords on the guitar and the enjoyment of the harmonica from the previous track. 3. A Man Needs a Maid - 1 Just an awful track. 4. Heart of Gold - 5 Instrumentally great but lyrically a bit boring. Harmonica is used incredibly effectively on the track. Guitar sounds excellent as well. 5. Are You Ready For The Country? - 6 Solid sounding guitars. Piano is a lovely touch as well. Lyrically it's good as well. Nothing that will overwhelm you but not bad either. 6. Old Man - 5 Another decent track that's right in the middle in terms of quality. I'd say mediocre but too many people think that's a negative. Chorus is very good to be fair to the track. 7. There's A World - 2 The orchestral sound is excellent but lyrically it is extremely weak. "We are leaving we are gone" is part of an example of that. On top of that the orchestra drowns a line or two out here or there. Then the song slows down and it just feels like random lines made to rhyme with each other with no purpose or meaning. Just overall a weak track. 8. Alabama - 7 Great track. Guitar sound is superb on the track and the vocals sound really good. Chorus is very enjoyable as well with an awesome guitar solo leading out of it. Best track on the album. 9. The Needle and the Damage Done - 7 Great slow track. Vocals are awesome and the guitar builds and fades brilliantly in and out of the vocals. 10. Words (Between the Lines of Age) - 6 Good sounds but it is essentially just a minimal amount of lyrics before a jam session. The jam session is decent and eventually ends back into another verse. All around an okay track. Average Rating: 4.80 Adjusted to a 5-Point Scale: 2.40 Rounded Down: 2 Stars

Not the first Neil I would reach for.

Vraiment pas fan de country mais il y avait quand même quelques sons assez sympa

2/5 i don't like country, its boring, but i liked the rythm and voice

One needs to be in the right mood for this album. Beyond the mega hits, it drug.

I must be the only person that cannot listen to Neil Young. It's meh music, it's a high-pitched nasal voice. It's too annoying to play in the background and too boring to actively listen to.

He's good but I still don't like county

Two or three amazing songs. The rest is ok, just not for my regular taste.

He da hani müsse us em Neil Young fan club ustrette, das langsam de Neil Old isch i mine ohre. Wärs de Neil Armstrong wäri no immer Fan. Zusätzlich zum usträtigsschriibe no zwei Schnurregiige id Frässi

This music makes me sad, and not in a good way. HOWEVER, for some reason, Alabama was hitting just right. I blame the bass line.

Again, not really my jam. The songs are great musically but Neil just doesn’t connect with me.

I went in with an open mind and gritted teeth. Neil Young’s voice still grates on me like a rusty rake across a chalkboard, and frankly, that made this album hard to enjoy—even when the instrumentation had potential. “Heart of Gold” and “Old Man” might’ve landed better sung by, say, literally anyone else. And don’t even get me started on “A Man Needs A Maid”—a song that manages to be both musically bloated and lyrically cringe. In short: Harvest is a maybe-almost-OK album trapped inside the body of a man wailing through a tin can. Please, 1001 list, let this be my Neil Young quota. I’ve served my time.

Music your great grandpa loved.

Neil can't sing

Nothing outstanding. Honestly didn't like it

Folks music is fine, but not my cup of tea

Listening to more Neil Young albums still isn't going to make me like Neil Young.

Not a Neil Young fan, but this is the best album of his that I’ve heard. Still, only 2-3 songs I’d want to listen to again.

Definitely grew on me as it went on, but not a huge fan of the guy's voice

Stop making me listen to Neil Young!!! His vocals ruin everything he touches for me I swear to goddd

His voice doesn’t do it for me. And a southern man don’t need him around anyhow.

Well known , a few memorable songs

I literally screamed "uuuugh, noooo" when I saw this come up. I just listened to the worst Neil Young album 2 days ago (Tonight's the Night), and now I have to listen to another one. I understand there are 7 god-awful Neil Young albums on this list...only 3 more to go. What a dull and uninspiring work this is and it's made all the worse with that whiny, shrill voice.

1. Out on the Weekend (4:34) - 7/10 Love the melodies and I'm a sucker for harmonica 2. Harvest (3:11) - 7/10 Great lyricism here too 3. A Man Needs a Maid (4:05) - 5/10 Kinda reminds me of Chris de Burgh in A Spaceman Came Traveling but I didn't like it too much unfortunately, the lyrics weren't my cup of tea 4. Heart of Gold (3:07) - 5/10 5. Are You Ready for the Country? (3:25) - 6/10 6. Old Man (3:24) - 6/10 I like the backing vocals and the chorus is great 6. There's a World (2:59) - 4/10 Really don't like this one :( 7. Alabama (4:02) - 6/10 Slightly better form 8. not for me

This is more enjoyable than the other Neil Young albums I’ve tried, but I still am not a fan and don’t get the hype

Relaxing, but wouldn't listen again - nothing there that really captivates me

Eh, Neil.

Would of liked it a lot more if someone else was singing. His voice just sucks the life out of every song he opens it in.

Very Neil Young. If you like this genre of music, it's great, but just not for me

Sometimes, I was like this isn’t bad. Other times, I really disliked Neil Young. I’m good lol

Yay, another album from the Southern rock-elevator music sub-genre. It's only Young's grating vocals that keep reminding me I'm currently listening to anything at all.

47/1001 The worst time to give me this was straight after effing Gram Parsons - it's a bit more inventive and original, granted, but Harvest still has a big fat country-rock spine running through it. Sadly, for me, this is another artist that just leaves me cold. A poor man's Dylan in my eyes - hell, the first track is just I Shall Be Released played sideways. The lyrics don't do anything for me, if anything they seem pretty heavy-handed and dull. And don't give me that "you just don't get it - he means the opposite of what he is saying" bullshit, there is definitely some misogyny at the core of A Man Needs A Maid. A cut above the trad-country hell of Parsons this may be, but the production and arrangements are still pretty uninspiring to me - and I know there are a wad of popular songs on here - the incongruous orchestration on There's A World was the only highlight for me. In a nutshell, a mid-tempo, country-tinged rock journey through Americana that rarely breaks out of a shuffle, accompanied by a tramp with a whiny voice banging on about lost loves, regrets, drug abuse and generally in desperate need of some cheering up. If that's your bag, this album is for you. Personally, I don't see the appeal.

Oh Neil ... Why do you keep showing up on this list...? Tho, maybe this is the album to show up on the list, it's hard for me to find the enjoyment of Neil Young in present day music. Johnny Cash, with the assistance of Rick Rubin and American Records was able to reinvent himself and introduce his music to a new audience. Johny Cash has this man's man brand attached to him. He goes to prisons to play music, sings about cocaine disappointment personal struggles small towns and God. Neil Young, has a whiny voice and loves to complain and protest. He's pulled his music off of Spotify because of their support for Joe Rogan. He points fingers at backwoods souther states, music and bands, holds benefit concerts for handicapped children. And tho he made attempts to introduce himself to newer audiences by touring with Sonic Youth, his appeal has fallen flat and remained in the hearts and minds of generations before our own.

mellow. folky. karaoke vibes. Fav Songs: Heart of Gold The Needle and the Damage Done

I can imagine people raving about this (especially harmonica lovers). Not really my thing, apart from some classics like Heart of Gold

Some of these tracks are really, really good. The vibe of the album is certianly potent, but nothing really grabs you. A classic album that is a must listen from this list, but nothing super unique about this one

They're really loading me up with Neil Young aren't they. Though this one seemed to contain some of his most popular songs (according to Spotify), I actually found it to be a little boring in places. Certainly the least interesting album of the four of his I've had thus far. Still some good stuff here though. 'Harvest' is a lovely track, 'Alabama' is solid rock tune, and I still don't think that Neil Young is whining. Not technically the best singer but a certain charm to it. I didn't enjoy this as much as the Neil Young album I had a couple of days ago which I rated a three, so I can't go higher than a two for this one I'm afraid.

It was aight

Sounds like someone modern that I can’t place. Not interesting enough for me to go back and try to find out

This album has not aged well for me. I remember being ambivalent about it at the time. I enjoyed some of it, but was mostly underwhelmed. I guess I feel the same about his entire oeuvre.

Album très calme, je n’ai pas perçu la poésie ni de rythme particulièrement sympa

Neil Young is one of those artists I've absolutely, utterly failed to connect with or appreciate on any level. We're talking about four decades of me going "ugh" every time I hear one of his songs. So I tried to go into this with an open mind, I really did, but... Ugh. Too slow, too melancholy, too folk/country. I just don't like Neil Young.

Neil should try to make his voice less grating.

Decent

a man does not need a maid, neil

2.5 some good ones in the beginning, then turns bad

man this man's voice is just so annoying. ich bin sicher neil young kann verschmerzen dass ich kein fan bin A MAN NEEDS A MAID??

it’s alright nothing insane. sounds like america the band to me “alabama” slapped. if only the whole album sounded like that

The musician in me is saying "hell yeah this is excellently written" but the person in me who just enjoys good sounding music isn't getting along with this sound. This didn't really capture me, and his voice felt whiny and average.

I feel like Neil Young is pretty hit or miss. But his misses aren't really bad, they're just kinda whatever. Old Man is the standout track & still a bop.

nothing to special , standard neil young activities

this pretty stinky honestly. i'm not gonna pretend like it's objectively garbage but it's so boring man his voice just doesn't do it for me. admittedly the only folk i've listened to before this and enjoyed was comus, but country is just such a better genre. lynyrd skynyrd was right about this dude. i'll give it the last 3 songs tho, those had a live sound or they were live, idk which, and they were more eventful songs. alabama probably the best song on here. that one was pretty cool. the rest were just really slow and nothing much happened in them and i don't remember them. same reason i don't rlly mess with radiohead or pink floyd. they kind of sound like this but different genres.

I’ve come to the conclusion that Neil Young just doesn’t do anything for me. I don’t like whiny vocal tone. I don’t like the real lack of variety here. I really felt nearly no emotion while listening to this. I want to get it, but I just don’t. I would way rather listen to Willie Nelson or Gordon Lightfoot, which are constant favorites.

This one is a big ol’ snooze festival, though the energy did pick up as the album progressed. There’s something very lonely about the sound of this music that I don’t enjoy? I would have to be in a highly specific mood.

I wanted to like this album more than some of Mr. Young’s other work on this list, because it is a good deal less whiny and complainy, but, in the end, it’s no less unbearably dull. Following this album, Spotify kicked into a playlist of recommended artists (since we like Neil, theoretically), some of whom are pretty mediocre (Croce, Cale, Rodríguez), and all of whom, for the next four hours, were more pleasant than Neil Young.

I didn't love this one. "Heart of Gold" is great and I thought "Alabama" was pretty good as well, but the only other track that stood out to me was the one about a maid, and it was honestly pretty awful. Just barely better than two stars, but I'm not feeling generous today.

good for calm mood

This is probably not the worst Neil Young record but I just can't with this guy. 1 extra star 'cause I know he's got more that are not this "good".

Jesus, how was this guy so fucking popular? The music and lyrics are amazing, I just can't stand to listen to the thin, reedy, whiny intonation. I'll try again when my ears stop bleeding.

Nah. I'm good. I didn't need more of Mr. Young. It's his voice. I know I know. But I can't get past it.

Much like the other Neil Young projects here, I just don't get much out of it. I'll never listen again, but wasn't anything horrendous, just totally fine.

Wow, this sucked. I know I’m in the minority, but I’ve always disliked Neil Young. In spite of that, I did my very best to go into this album with an open mind. I think I’m just generally sensitive to the sound and quality of vocals. If those bother me, I have a hard time getting past it (Rush is a good example). This makes sense since I rarely focus on the lyrics and instead just hear the whole production, with the vocals essentially serving as an instrument. So if I find the vocals grating, that’s a big part of the mix that I dislike. And I absolutely hate Neil Young’s voice. It’s hard for me to hear anything else. I’m not sure how he became so popular with those shaky, weak-ass vocals. If not for some solid instrumentation on a couple tracks (slide guitar on Are You Ready for the Country, finger picking on Old Man, guitar solos on Words), this would be 1/5. I really disliked this album. It’s like John Denver without any of the heart and Dylan without any of the soul. Old Man is a solid track, though. 2/5 Highlights: Old Man

Still don't get Neil Young.

I wish somebody gave this man a shot of caffeine. This album is better than other Neil Young records I have listened to before but it's so laid back it's really monotonous. Don't get me wrong, the man has talent and the songs are good, but also a snoozefest altogether.

Theoretically Neil Young’s music should be my jam. Unfortunately, his voice gives me shingles.

Old Man and Heart of Gold might be classics, but they don't make a top album.

Such an arrangement for “A man needs a maid”. 😬

Even if I could get past how horrid it is to listen to Neil Young sing, this is just peak Boomer nonsense. And "A Man Needs a Maid" should get fired into the sun.

Decent. Probably won’t revisit. 5/10

I'm not a country fan at all. This was inoffensive but not something I would listen to again.

I never really listened to Neil Young before. And I am definitely not going to start. I liked the final track, Words, the most. A handful of songs I like the instrumentals, but I'm so turned off by everything else across all the songs - Neil's voice, the lyrics, etc. Definitely not my style and I'm not really looking forward to listening to more music by him in this list.

Gosh words can’t describe the hatred I have for this man’s voice. I just think he’s so overrated (I know I’ll get killed for that) but I can’t stand his nasally whiny voice. I do recognize he has incredible influence especially with CSNY and I love them. So i’ll give him credit for that, however despite his incredible influence I dislike him.

Neil Young is a songwriting genius. What I find less enjoyable is his performance of the songs. Aside from the classic songs of "Heart of Gold" and "Old Man," which are iconic, I don't connect very well with the rest of the songs.

Not my style of music

Maybe I'm just too young to understand music without bleeps and bloops but this was pretty boring. 2/5

I get it but I don't really want to listen to it. Similar to The Flaming Lips but I'm not going to relisten - annoying voice paired with lazy lyrics. I'm sure there will be a person, place and time that changes my mind. 2.2

Apart from one song a completely overhyped and disappointing album. Whiny voice almost as bad as Dylans

I finally figured out why I hate his voice listening to this right now. He's speaking in falsetto. That isn't singing. hes just talking? I don't get it. The music isn't terrible, but man. that voice kills me and I like a lot of terrible singing. But. This isn't singing?

The bangers elevate this above all the Neil young before it but I have to believe this album is on the list based on their strength alone. The rest of this is entirely forgettable

Damn this was a long one hahaha

I’m sorry, he sounds like Kermit still…

Not total shit, but close!

Recognized heart of gold….

I liked it more than the last Neil Young album you made me listen to (a mere four days ago), but let's not make this a habit, mmkay?

Much better than the average two but wouldn’t listen to the album through again

Liebliches Gesäusel und einfache Instrumentierung, dann die Orchesterwand: irgendwie hatte da jemand beim Produzieren keinen roten Faden. Und ich bin mir sicher: 70er-Musik mag ich nicht (allles).

I just don’t like his voice. Old Man is a favorite across covers but A Man Needs a Maid left a bad taste in my mouth that followed the whole track list.

This 2 has some qualifiers. 90% of this album was a drag. It felt plodding, shallow, and empty. It made me tired to listen to, like nothing going on most of the time and when it picked up neil proceeded to drag it back into tired slumber. That said, "The Needle and The Damage" and "Words" saved this album from 1 territory for me. Both tracks synergized well with Neil's style and I felt myself getting into the songs when his vocals came in instead of groaning.

I don't like the song about the maid omfg. Overall, did not enjoy. That's probably controversial. Oh well. 2/5

I'm not a big Neil Young fan. I listened to this album. It has its fans. It's Neil Young. Next, please.

Nichtssagend.

This was a tough listen. Really did not like this album. A Man Needs a Maid is terrible. It all just kind of sounded like whiny country music performed by a man who can't sing well. There were maybe two songs on this album that were decent, but the rest I would be perfectly okay with never having to hear again.

might be good songs in here but i can't stand his stupid voice

Bit dull for my tastes

This is my second Neil Young album and the guy is obviously not for me. I find his singing very flat and all the songs much the same, with A Man Needs a Maid sounding like some kind of a parody. I was trying to decide between 2 and 3 stars but since I've skipped a few songs i.e. didn't listen to them all the way to the end, I've decided on 2*.

I dislike country-inflected rock and pop, and I don't care for Neil Young's voice (sorry!). So this album sits well outside my usual envelope of taste. the only track on the album I knew before I played it was 'Heart of Gold', and that irritates me. I did like 'The Needle and the Damage Done". 2/5

No es mi estilo

Favourite Song: Old Man The orchestral moments seem to contrast the more folky. While nothing overly captured me, I did enjoy the blend of genres. Unfortunately, the album was not available on Spotify which did slightly alter the listening experience as I had to use YouTube. I don't imagine the original release had a McDonald's ad midway through.

Yeah, Neil Young is Neil Young, and Harvest isn't a relevation in that regard. It sounds like pretty much everything else he's done and particularly similar to earlier efforts. This is lazy, I don't like his voice, and it's telling that he has to have a star-studded list of collaborators to try to elevate it. Even the supposedly seminal Heart Of Gold isn't great by any standard. He's a wannabe Bob Dylan who never ever ever got close to that quality of output. 2, and that's generous.

Either I'm being beaten into submission or this is just one of the betterNeil youngs albums of the many ones on this cursed list. But it's still Neil Young, knock a star off for the overspill of crap I've had to listen to.

Not my jam

Neil I've had a few run ins with before. His voice really grates with me in a way very few others artists do. The instrumentation and stuff is fine here, although the production is doing a bit of whatever the 70s music equivalent of putting vaseline on the lens is.

If you want to intentionally age and distress a human, apply this album

It has a few good songs. The rest is kinda boring

thought I liked Neil Young more until I listened to this, now I realise I like some Neil Young tracks, but he has a lot of skippable material

Not my favorite. Calming! But I'm sorta indifferent

Slow burn, gets better further into the album. You just need patience and be in the mood to listen to a guy sing long and slow. Honestly enjoyed the instruments more than the lyrics.

Favorite songs: Heart of Gold; Old Man; The Needle and Damage Done To be honest the two singles stand out. But listening to The Needle and the Damage Done was new to me. Words was a good fitting end to the album.

Enimmäkseen taustamusaa.

I like Neil Young, but this album didn't do it for me.

One liberating thing about turning 26 is being able to say “Neil Young just doesn’t do it for me” without the fear of being disowned by my parents and dropped from the family healthcare plan. Too old for that now

Not quite my tempo to start out. Heart of Gold is classic of course.

Neil young is a whiney story teller

It was another Neil Young album. It wasn't awful but it wasn't particularly good. It is pretty whiney. I was familiar with a couple of songs. I do not see myself revisiting this album again.

Third Neil Young album for this challenge. The other two I rated a 3/5. This one was quite a drudge to get through. Even the couple of relatively upbeat numbers felt weighed down. There were a couple of weirdly overproduced tracks, "A Man Needs a Maid" and can't remember the other one, that felt out of place. I'll take "Heart of Gold" and "Old Man" and you can keep the rest.

Naja...2

Boooring. And somehow too annoying to be background music. Maybe it's the banjo. "Old Man" was my favourite from the album but otherwise not for me.

Just not me at all.

Non mi lascia molto, non ha particolari spunti, molto piatto.

Neil Young has an annoying whiny voice, plays harmonica and guitar, and writes deep and meaningful songs. Like a rockier Bob Dylan. With a better voice. And I think - probably - better songs. Old Man is iconic; Needle and the Damage Done is perfectly suited for Neil's voice. Not feeling the love for the rest of it, some good music dragged down by the singing.

this was a pretty low vibrational experience for me because I had to listen on YouTube music on a mobile browser, sucked, also I was having a terrible day sorry to neil for not giving this album a second chance while I was cooking my mung beans but I would have had to keep my phone screen on so the music wouldn't pause which is dumb as fuck. the 3 or 4 songs I listened to were alright but I really like Crosby stills Nash and young, and this album was nowhere near as good as their music to me

you reap what you sow

Never been a fan of Neil. Listening to this album didnt change that a bit.

Why are there so many Neil Young albums in this list? the mans just average, like this album.

I think I’ve only heard a few Neil Young songs. I know that he’s one of the bigwigs of classic rock, and yet my knowledge of him and his music is pretty minimal. Let’s change that today! Songs I already knew: Heart Of Gold Favourites: Heart Of Gold To be honest, I’m really quite underwhelmed. I was expecting the music of some kind of rock god, but it was more the moanings of a tired old man. I don’t know how old he was when this was actually recorded, but this is how it came across to me. Heart Of Gold definitely stands out more than the rest, with Old Man being another that was at least somewhat memorable. Otherwise, this just wasn’t for me and didn’t really float my boat.

I was only able to listen to a couple of tracks on the platform (Spotify) so couldn’t give it a proper hearing.

Well started thinking this was annoying, why so rated. Then found myself being swept away on a westward wind. Over prairie down ravines, following buffalo as they meandered mindlessly. I sat in an old bar staring down a Texan as I downed my tequila. I awoke anew
