Reviews (page 11 of 13)

Pretty good stuff. Heart of gold actually seems quaint compared to some of other emotionally potent material on here. Eg, every man needs a maid, old man, or the closer Words. 3.5/5

This was not energetic enough to keep me going on a summer Friday.

3.5 Enjoyed this quite a bit. "There's a World" is fantastic. Just can't see myself relistening very much because it's quite low energy.

did I have high expectations? perhaps too much. decent, but still felt overengineered and kind of generic. the canadian cowboy gets extra points for being canadian (ram ranch)

bem legal.

Better than the first Neil Young album we reviewed but still not my favorite.

very folksy combination of sort of the medieval sounding pop sound of the 70s with country influences. I like the vibe of this album.

Great start and great ending, the sound is great but I wanted something more

N é meu estilo

There are some good songs on this one but overall I think there are others of his I like better.

Couple notable hits among an easy listening album.

I really enjoyed the grand production paired with Young's poetic and lyrical melodies. a nice treat. 7.5/10

Interesting.

How many Neil Young albums are they going to throw at us?!? This one was better than the others I’ve had already (certainly the earliest yet from the catalog), with a few bigger hits, but other songs were just a chore.

Not my fave Neil Young album, but not bad.

I like Neil Young a lot, and hadn’t listened to Harvest in quite some time. It was a less straight-ahead obvious-great-record experience than I expected. I find his folkin side a lot less compelling than his rockin side, or at least I like a bit more balance than Harvest provides. And I really don’t like the stuff with the symphony! That doesn’t work with Neil Young, I think. It’s good but I’d rather listen to the guy flip out on the electric guitar for 40 minutes. Sorry Caleb (?)

This was a pleasant listen, but at the same time, nothing really caught my attention. 3 - 3.5 stars

A good album, I liked the songs Out on the Weekend, Old Man, Alabama and Words (Between the Lines of Age).

Argh.... It had to happen sooner or later. I am ... not going to lie. I am a fairly outspoken person. If I have a belief I can back up with science or some kind of real world proof, I may not let go. Some musicians, regardless of their musical quality can "lose me" by their political or other agenda policies. Neil Young is NOT one of those!! I have no reason not to think I would personally like the guy. So now I am caught. I have no reason to dislike what amounts to a guy who has truly classic hits and a massive head of the table following... But... But.... I . don't . like . Neil Young's voice all that much... Sorry. I really am. I have two friends that come to mind: One that hates on RUSH and the other on Tom Petty because they don't like their voices. The good news is I am going to temper my own feelings with my advice to them: "Surely you don't hate ALL their music because of that one thing?" And I see that Neil Young lyrically, instrumentally, and just overall IS actually a master of his craft. I do not like Neil Young's voice. But for those that might, I think you are going to like this album.

sounds like an album that would be featured on gardens of the galaxy

My preferred Neil Young continues to be in another castle, but this is definitely closer to what I'm looking for in his work.

Solid Neil album. 3.5

Easy listen... Didn't stand out much but was enjoyable. 3/5

It's a classic album and has his biggest hit on it. Yet it's not my favorite NY album. I much prefer his later rock / grunge style with Crazy Horse, which is amazing live.

Not bad

Which songs did I listen to? Heart of Gold. The other songs I don’t know. When he isn’t indulging in self-pity and his guitar gets louder it is more tolerable.

I thought it declined as it went along.

who is this old lady

Big highlights, A man needs a maid, words. Some less interesting songs

Just not a fan of Neil. Somethin about his voice or style just leaves me cold. I respect his writing and musicianship but I don't think that he will ever(on his own) get more than a 3 from me.

Ok...

Might be his best album but I am not a fan tbh.

I've been trying to lighten up on Neil Young lately. This is fine. His voice is just so high-pitched and thin, it's...you know...Canadian. I prefer the Crazy Horse stuff.

Love me some Neil Young, but he's definitely a Greatest Hits musician.

Majority of the album is pretty simple and mellow-sounding (which makes plenty of sense after later reading that Young was nursing a back injury throughout the duration of this album's recording and couldn't physically play an electric guitar). I guess that's to be expected with a folk/country rock record. Not my biggest cup of tea, but a few tracks stood out (for better or for worse). "There's a World" almost sounds too ornate for this album, and the same can be said for "A Man Needs a Maid", which was probably my least favorite song in the album performance-wise. The mold is broken a bit with songs like "Alabama" and "Words", as both feature more guitar work. Also have to mention "Heart of Gold" as it's Young's most iconic song and a folk/country rock staple. Looking at the whole body of work, this album didn't do a whole lot for me. I respect and appreciate the songwriting of Mr. Neil Young, but I've never been huge on this era of folk/country fusion. Perhaps I'll be surprised later in this long list of albums though.

Guter Sound. Bekannte Hits. Beruhigend. American Sound.

It’s good, just not as good as everyone makes it out to be

Not bad for a Neil Young album, but please, no more.

Mostly just underwhelming.

Not the best but not the worst Neil young I’ve gotten on this list. Just glad it’s back on Spotify honestly.

I like Neil Young, but this album didn't do it for me.

Great album with some incredible tracks and beautiful guitar tones. I think for some tracks the production is a little grand for my tastes.

Not my thing but I appreciate the vocals and the instrumentals. Alabama was the best of the album. It's all a bit too country/Christian for my taste, but still a pretty good listen

Good, some weird songs that don’t seem to fit with the others, but still good.

Cd bien relajante y tranquilo. Bueno para estar relax y escuchándolo

More Neil. Good songs, but still not my jam.

I really wanted to like this. But it didn't have the range I was looking for. The obvious all-timers hold up, but the songs outside of that didn't really grab me.

Decent

couple of tracks seem to come out of nowhere

I’ve never been a Neil Young fan. I know: people who love him love him. I respect him but he’s not my thing. On the album the radio friendly Old Man and Heart of Gold are good. Country has a nice bluesy feel. The rest of the album was tolerable.

Well, it was better than the last Neil Young album I listened to. I liked Old Man, and the one from the start of Hot in Herre.

The dog dies :( Also apparently he kicked the dog because the dog was bad. Apart from that pretty fun. Even made me a bit nostalgic for a North American country past I never had. Anemoia?

a couple good gems on here. a little boring overall.

There are some really good and amazing songs on this album, but, to me, Neal Young's voice can get to be a bit much. All in all, a pretty solid album but hard to listen to straight through.

Sounds like Neil Young. Some hits songs

So this is definitely one of Neil Young's stronger offerings, but I still don't really care for him all that much. Some songs have great parts but they are ruined by either bad lyrics, terrible singing, or just a totally boring instrumental. A couple songs manage to avoid those problems though, so I'm giving this a 3. But it is a low 3. Close to a 2 but wouldn't feel right rating this album as such

Unique voice and writing. I don’t think I can appreciate this as much as other people for being historically important. 3.4

Very soft and pleasant music, good for relaxaion, even though can be boring at times. Also good lyrics ("Every Man Needs a Maid" does not count)

out on the weekend- idgaf. 3 or 4 harvest- its whatever 5 a man needs a maid- boooo 2 heart of gold- dont care 3 im skipping these next songs cause i dont care needle and the damage done- 8 because im me. i dont wanna listen to the rest

Out on the weekend 👌🏻 Are you ready for the country 👌🏻 Old man 👍🏻 Good voice and use of instruments. Not very notable or memorable tbh. Not bad either, I wouldn’t be mad if someone put it on tho.

Just still not a fan of Neil Young.

A few strong numbers here, but nothing to write home about and nothing surprising

It’s nice but it didn’t blow me away. Admittedly I’ve heard it before but other than Heart of Gold and Out on the Weekend, it pretty much passed me by.

man isnt this like the 4th neil young album? …and because he isnt on spotify, i had to listen on youtube… and ever since the last time i did that, the algorithm keeps thinking im a huge neil young fan and keeps serving me up neil young news every time i search ANYTHING. im not going to listen to this one, lest google thinks im a super fan

Not my favorite Neil Young album but can appreciate it for what it is. The final 3 tracks are my favorites on this album. The orchestral sections can be a little much at time but they definitely add to the emotion of it all.

This album was fine. Would make for good background music. Neil Young’s voice gets grating after a whole album though. I’m good for a Neil young song here and there but a whole albums worth was too much.

Clean voice, enjoyable, Cool orchestral elements. 3*. I just don't think I'm a Neil Young fan.

Solid.

Some really good songs. Not feeling the orchestral parts too much. Will I listen to again: 50%

Quick listen. All around solid album

Decent Album and some iconic songs

not on bastard spotify old man definitely the standout for me so far. really like the gradual crescendo album just got better towards the end not sure if that was just me warming up to neil young or whatever but cool like the last song and the range it shows

would be better if on Spotify

The first few songs are kind of rough but the album picks up in the second half. Having to endure the YouTube ads didn't help either.

A distinct sound and Heart of Gold was played constantly at the time. Pleasant enough but not earth shattering. 3*

About as middle of the road as it gets.

Out on the Weekend - 7.5/10 Harvest - 7/10 A Man Needs a Maid - 7/10 Heart of Gold - 7.5/10 Are You Ready for the Country? - 7/10 Old Man - 7/10 There's a World -7/10 Alabama - 8/10 The Needle and the Damage Done - 7/10 Words (Between the Lines of Age) - 7/10 TOTAL - 65/100

Its okay. I like it fine, but I feel like a lot of the stuff I already know well from that era is the same, but better. The most famous track on this album is probably Heart of Gold, which is about as good as one of The Band's worse songs.

A beautifully recorded album that I struggling to find much personal connection with. Heart of Gold, Old Man, and Needle and the Damage Done are the only tracks I truly enjoy and/or stir strong emotion. Dig Tim Drummond's bass tone.

This album is a solid folk album. Most of the songs are pretty pleasant. Some haven't aged well (Man Needs a Maid - not just the lyrics, but also how over the top and melodramatic the song is). All in all: not bad, not excellent. 3/5

Classic old folk. Easy listening and good album but didn’t really capture me like I thought it would.

Some of these songs are pretty good. Too bad Neil Young sings them. I hate his voice. Favorite song: old man

decent, average 70s soft folk. 3.5/5

Nice vibe through the whole album. Chill to listen to.

Are we nearly done with Neil Young now? To be fair, this is one of his better efforts, and has the song that everyone knows and is actually half decent. I think it just scrapes a 3 on the strength of Heart of Gold, but it's still a singer songwriter style without the lyrical dexterity that makes people who do that well successful.

Good album for the rainy drive home. Recognized quite a few songs from my dad listening to classic rock on the radio a lot. I liked how he mixed it up more than I would have thought for a folk guy, heard some big band elements, piano, etc. Not a big folk fan personally though.

classic

An album of hits and whiffs.

It was OK, some tracks (such as Heart of Gold) better than others. It was short, being less than 40 minutes. I give it 3 stars.

The best songs on this album make me want to rate it a five. There is a very authentic sorrow and pain behind his voice. The worst songs on this album make me want to rate it a one. He’s being such a whiny bum and he doesn’t even sound good while doing it.

I feel like Neil Young is the king of bad lyrics with really good music. The instrumentals are so good, but I just don't care about most of what Neil is saying. Old Man is a good song, though.

This one really depends on the mood. Sometimes it hits a chord, sometimes I find it grating.

I'm aware that this is a classic and a listen through showed beautiful melody and lyrics. But I had to find it on YouTube and the ads really disrupted my flow.

Had to go to youtube music to find it. not my vibe today. I can see it being a good one on a day I'm feeling far more like a chill sound.

As a kid I could never understand why my parents liked him, with a voice like that. Now I get the vibes and can appreciate it on a certain level, but it’s not a go-to album in my rotation. I thought Neil was a great addition to Crosby, Stills & Nash though.

Like everything Neil Young makes, it is easy to listen to and has some rather clever lyrics and musical decisions here and there. I couldn't tell you a Neil Young album I love top to bottom, but this is yet another one I could easily throw on while doing something and enjoy.

Beauty and boredom, all rolled into one.

when I read "Neil Young" I thought this guy was Chris Isaac and was excited because that guy has some decent songs Took me a while to realize this is another guy It was all right

The music is fine, I just can't get past his voice.

Decent album overall, a bit dated but some solid tracks on here. The controversy with Skynyrd over "Alabama" is an interesting part of pop culture history.

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Good diversity of songwriting and instrumentation

I've listened to a couple of Neil Young's solo albums, but this was my first time listening to Harvest. I'm familiar with "Heart of Gold" and "Old Man," but the rest of the songs on this album were new to me. I've liked Neil Young's singing on other albums of his, and this album was no exception to that. This album was well written and sounded great; I liked that there wasn't a lot going on instrumentally (with a couple of well known exceptions), but it was still well executed and sounded like it was really well produced. Lyrically, this is about what I would expect from Neil Young: songs that are pretty sad and pessimistic. But on this album, I felt like the lyrics lacked the punch and depth that I've found on other albums of his. The biggest thing working against this album is that "A Man Needs a Maid" and "There's A World" stick out like a sore thumb, with their complex sounds. The rest of the album feels cohesive, and while these are good songs, they feel really out of place on this album. "Heart of Gold" and "Old Man" are the highlights of this album, but unfortunately, nothing else really comes close to them. Overall, this was a pretty middle of the road album.

Nice album very chill

It was alright. Loved the sound, and the singles are classics, but the rest of it is just kind of slow and dour. Best Songs: Heart of Gold, Old Man Listen Again: Wouldn't be against it

6.5/10

It's ok.

not on Spotify

Kinda falls off for me. Listen to harvest moon by Neil young now that is a banger why is that not on this album

Decent record, I just don't dig it quite as much as others seem to.

Impressions: A folk album I can listen to. Pleasant. Favorite tracks: Out On the Weekend, A Man Needs A Maid Rating: 3/5

Neil Young is in my category of singer songwriters who I respect but don't like listening to their voices: Bob Dylan et al. A Man Needs a Maid especially hits me with the bombastic orchestral score underpinned by his thin wavering voice.

Good vibes

Feels a bit dated. I liked it in the past, but it feels unpolished but without really qualifying that with anything brilliant. It was okay though.

At The Drive-in, AFI, Motion City Soundtrack of Panic! At The Disco.

I can be easily bought with a harmonica. But the rest is quite questionable. "Man Needs a Maid" is the weirdest song I've heard in a while. I don't know what happened in Alabama in 1972 and I don't want to know.

maybe I'll give it a re-listen, but for now it's solid, but did not leave a big impression

its fine, don't love it.

It was okay. Mostly turned into background noise for me nothing stood out as exceptionally good

A few songs I liked but not enough for multiple listens

Good musician, but not my kind of music at all.

Out on the Weekend - 3/5 Harvest - 3/5 A Man Needs a Maid - 3/5 Heart of Gold - 4/5 Are You Ready for the Country? - 2/5 Old Man - 4/5 There's a World - 2/5 Alabama - 3/5 The Needle and the Damage Done - 3/5 Words - 2/5

Boring

I mean. It's Neil Young with Crosby Stills.and Nash. What'd you expect?

Grilling music

A mostly mediocre album. 2 noteworthy songs and 8 fillers. The two notable songs are Heart of Gold and Words (Between the Line of Age). Heart of Gold has a catchy hook that makes the song listenable. The final track, running at almost 7 minutes, is a great outro with a catchy sad ballad piano. Two songs on this album were downright bad. Are you Ready for the Country was abysmal. The vocals seemed borderline out of tune and the beat seemed like something an amateur high school band could create in a matter of minutes. And of course, this album wouldn't be quite so notable if it weren't for the condescending self-righteousness of the song Alabama. Like many thoughtless progressives, Neil Young is eager to "be on the right side of history" and earn the sycophant praise of the major media outlets by bashing the South and stroking his ego for his assumed moral superiority. What a brave and courageous statement to earn the praise of every powerful institution in the Western world. Fortunately, the best part of this song is that it helped launch Lynyrd Skynyrd to world fame. Overall, this album earns a 3 star rating. Mostly uninspiring boomer music.

Tykkäsin

Not available on Spotify

It's fine. His voice is so tough.

I enjoy the sound, but it's just whiny man music. Not my thing so far

Decent album. Heart of Gold and Words are classics of course, but what really stole the show for me was A Man Needs A Maid. Genuinely hilarious and almost anachronistic, a goofily serious juxtaposition against Neil's voice.

Yeil Noung

I like most Neil Young songs. I love some of them, and they're typically the ones that would end up on a "best of." Adler and I got a kick out of "A Man Needs A Maid." Adler does, But is that antiquated and socially untenable? I think my problem with Mr. Young is how seriously he seems to take everything. Does the dude ever laugh? Like, through his music?

This is certainly a well-made album. Neil just isn't my jam, no matter how many chances I give him. I don't hate him, I just can't see what all the fuss is about.

Mmm, here we are again with Neil Young. So I've been surprised by a couple of the records. Not this time though, we're back on country Neil, and aside from a couple of good tracks and a general vibe, I'm largely unmoved. Last track is good.

I don't believe I've heard any Neil Young's songs before, so I wasn't sure what to expect at the beginning of the album. His vocals put me off a little. But then I got to A Man Needs a Maid — the orchestral arrangement is just gorgeous. Songs that stood out to me upon 1st listen: 3 - A Man Needs a Maid; 6 - Old Man; 7 - There's a World; 9 - The Needle & Damage Done Would I revisit this album: Maybe, maybe not.

Pretty cool

Wasn’t feeling this at first but the back it picked up steam after track five. You got a couple classics on here and a good finish. It’s not really my thing though. Not big into twangy guitar or country in general. But there are some solid compositions with piano and a full orchestra as well. Great electric guitar too. But I’ll probably never seek this out for another listen for awhile. Understand why it’s here tho. Solid 7/10 for me 🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾

Good, down the middle Neil Young. Wouldn’t give it a full listen again

Took forever to listen to this one for it to be mid. But still enjoyed.

good stuff!! very easy listen.

Folky country. 3/5

Has some great songs but also a couple of very boring ones. Not going on my list!

Nail Young is talented, just not my type of music. Not something id choose to listen to on my own

Close in style to country. I enjoyed it more as I got further into the album. not bad.

sounded like a classic but not my favorite genre, I would never pick it to listen to but it was enjoyable

Enjoyed as an album in background, feels stronger than a 3 but defo not a 4

Not my cup of tea

A classic. Some songs are overproduced, some other are just perfect. (I don't like ratings, I give a 3 to everyone)

Another artist not on spotify cause of some libtard blabberfest..makes me sick. Its's not bad, got some foot tapping stuff. I'm not blown away by any means. Old man goes hard ofc. The intense/dramatic drums are cool. It's cinematic and really adds depth to the project, makes it feel like more of an experience. He might be winning me over a little with this one.. What I think it is...is his vocals...his nasaly kinda tone isnt for me and has a tendency to take the punch out of a very strong performance from the band.

Classic. Easy listening. Always a little squeamish about his vocals, but definitely classic

Mildly depressing

Well that was disappointing. I thought Neil Young was supposed to be good. Nice bit of guitar work now and then to break up the whinging about drugs.

I wanted to like this album less, but expected to like it more. Neil Young removed his music from Spotify in support of censorship, which made me lose all respect for him as a person. However, I'd actually really enjoyed every song if his I'd heard up until this album. I thought he had potential to become one of my favourite artists and was wanting to explore his discography more, but that was before what he did. After that, I lost interest. I still loved all his contributions to "Deja Vu," which this site gave a a few weeks ago, which left me feeling uncomfortably conflicted. This one just ended up being boring though, and actually, I'm relieved. 3 stars because there's nothing necessarily wrong with it musically. Some lucid lyrical moments, but over all, inoffensively boring. This isn't about the style, either- I'm a huge soft music girl and I like country too. But first and foremost, the songwriting has to be interesting, and it wasn't. The songs just dragged on and on, pretending to be deep but actually saying nothing, and doing even less musically. Favourite track: Heart of Gold

Great album. I’d give it an 8.

It’s alright.I really like heart of gold and a man needs a maid is ok but besides that the album isn’t super memorable.

not on Spotify. I am too lazy 3

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yes, Stellar vocals aren’t the only thing that carries through, the tracks effortlessly compliment each other Favourite song: Track 10 - Words (Between the Lines of Age)

Interesting symphonic parts among the folk rock. Heart of Gold still the highlight.

A lovely album with a few of my all time favourite songs on it, the rest of the album isn't up to the two songs but it's still a good listen.

It seems only 'The Needle and the Damage Done' is the only song available on my platform of choice at present, and while a good song I can't possibly judge the whole album.

Time to dust off the CDs. I'm a NY fan but I find this one a bit uneven especially with the 2 orchestrated tracks. Some classics but not in his 10 best IMHO.

Not really my type of music, but eh it sounded good enough I don't find any of if particularly memorable but it's an easy and enjoyable listen for what it is.

Some nice catchy bits, not really lively enough for me

i liked this but not one that i would revisit

Two songs available in my country, meh

A couple of classic tracks here, but I'm not sure I would revisit this album.

Definitively, Neil is better when accompanied. I found the key to enjoying his songs!

Mein erstes Album. Erstes Lied beginnt schon sehr chillig. Bin froh hanis gloset. Wird aber kein Favorit.

This is a well made album but it is incredibly boring. Even the handful of songs I like are pretty boring. I would never listen to this on purpose but I can understand why people would like it. 3.5 stars

No longer on Spotify

Easy laid back music.

So I understand a bit more this time why people enjoy Neil, but im still not sold. Definitely hearing the folk side in this one, and i could even draw a direct line to some of the folk bands big today. There's also some choices I wasn't expecting, with big production on a couple of tracks, and there are definite 70s sounds that creep into a few of them. Makes for an interesting listen. Just not something I'm super into.

Some pretty good, some pretty bad, standouts include heart of gold and words (between the lines) 3.5/5

I'm not a huge fan of Neil Young, but this album hit different somehow. It helps that I really like Heart of Gold.

Fine songwriter, a couple of great songs, but overall not my cup of tea.

Is it sacrilege to say this one takes a while to get going for me? Far preferred side 2.

Not on Spotify

Nice album with some good songs

This is probably better than I realise - not particularly captivated on first listen, but maybe I wasn’t paying enough attention. Will give it another go at some point.

I've never given Neil Young a chance, despite being one of my dads favourite artists, as country has never done it for me. Four songs in, I felt my decision was justified. Just bland and poor. A man needs a maid was actually laughable, I hope that wasn't a genuine song at the time because that's incredibly sad, but I don't know why he'd be taking the mick. Are you Ready for the Country and Old Man turned my head though, two great songs, why couldn't the album have started like that?? The rest of the album was pretty solid. Needle was enjoyable. First four tracks ruined any chance of it getting 4*, but it's a very strong 3. It's a shame he's no longer on Spotify but I totally get the reason. Fully support him. But my god YouTube is so bad to listen to music on. Ads every two tracks is not my jam.

S’alright

I've said it before and I am guessing I may have to say it again and again, but I am not a fan of Neil Young. This album didn't help change my mind at all. There are some grand gestures with the symphony, but I am not sure that was a plus on this album.

I’d always thought Harvest Moon would be on this album. Shows how much I know.

Already a big fan of Old Man but some of this album missed the mark a little for me

I have to confess that Neil Young was all about "Harvest Moon" for me. It was interesting to listen to the complete album, but it's more straightforward, more stylized part of his music. I still like the tender and dreamy sound of Harvest Moon more than this album

3/5. There’s some interesting songs on this one but don’t think it pushes it over to a 4 despite the great ones on this one. Heart of gold, old man, Alabama, and words are all great. Everything else is not interesting enough besides maybe out on the weekend.

fine, nothing more nothing less

How can Heart of Gold, Old Man, The Needle and the Damage Done exist on the same album as A Man Needs a Maid and There’s a World? I have to average it down to a 3, which feels kind of wrong.

RIP Crosby

A bit plodding in parts. I know the needle and the damage done already, the rest not really heard before.

Not a Young fan at all but this is his album to me.

Ilmeeltään tasainen mutta tasoltaan ailahteleva levy. Heart of Gold on niin selkeä kohokohta, että muiden kappaleiden pätevät, yhden melodian rakenteet eivät pysy perässä. Lisäksi Young flirttailee kamaluuden kanssa Man Needs a Maid -raidalla, ja sortuu pimeälle puolelle There's a World -mässäilyllään. Mutta olisiko toista After the Gold Rushia lupa odottaakaan?

More North American mediocrity. Well made, but boring music to listen to in your pickup.

Not my type of music, Neil Young is boring

He was about 28 when this album was released, but he sounds so old. Not always so wise, but old. It was worth listening to hear some tracks which were not released.

I have never gotten in to Neil Young, I think he rules and I respect the hell out of him and how he's handled himself, but I just can't get in to his voice. That being said, I'm excited to dig in to his albums on this list, but this one isn't for me. I guess there's a good reason why it was such a big hit, it's very polished. It has it's moments before, but I think it's pretty underwhelming.

The music is good but not keen on Neil Young's voice. It's a bit whiney

Too whiney and too much harmonica. Like Dylan but not.

It started off well, until the dreaded harmonica strikes again! 😭 Despite this, it's not a bad album. Heart of Gold and Old Man are decent songs.

I don't much like Neil Young, and I really haven't much liked all the Neil Young albums the generator has given me so far. Although looking back at my history this is just the fourth. Feels like more. Right away I like album more than I expected to. The opener is fine, Harvest is good, and Heart of Gold and Old Man are classics for a reason, and the last two songs are nice. Before I started this project those were the songs I knew, and back then I a better opinion of Neil Young. I won't be putting this album into rotation, but I can see how a person could like it without being obviously wrong.

Just a solid dad rock album. I wasn’t particularly moved by any of the songs but I definitely enjoyed the overall vibe as I went about my day.

This one's too tied up in some memories to give it an impartial rating. A neutral 3 you get!

Good album. Still not on Spotify because NY still cares about the Joe Rogan thing. Honestly the orchestral bits were a bit too much, but most of the sound I'm very about. Standouts: Out on the Weekend, Heart of Gold, Are You Ready for the Country?, The Needle and the Damage Done

Sounds like some guy staring out of an old timey cottage waiting for a woman he’s only somewhat sure he’s ever seen

Another classic which I've managed to avoid for 50 years. Pretty good.

Overhyped

I was moved not by the weeping guitar twangs or the heady tenor crooning of a young Neil Young already feeling grey and world-weary by the ripe age of... *checks notes* 24. Jokes aside, I appreciate the wistful sentiment at play, the evocation of country hillsides and sincere, rustic life. But as much as it feels like that thing, it's not a thing I particularly enjoy. I do find the contradictory wordplay in A Man Needs a Maid quite clever, the sweeping theatrics of There's a World, and the reflective critique of Alabama, however. There's good thoughts driving these tracks, a smart guy for sure. It's just a bit too stripped down (some bits like There's a World, notwithstanding) to my tastes, and overall in a flavor I wouldn't choose to listen to again, for me. I don't feel like it earns a 2 but let's just say there's a lot of other 3's I've given that I'd happily listen to over this.

T3B 1. Heart Of Gold 2. Old Man 3. A Man Needs A Maid Chill. Super easy listening! Solid 3. No Spotify playlist adds because Neil is a fucking diva.

3.5/5. Excellent.

Great album that I know well, but found a bit dull this time round. Amazing how ears can tire of some sounds.

didn't hate it

default 2.5/5

Lyrics were beautiful but the pacing wasn’t always the best!

It's Neil. Listen to it if you haven't, then after that it's optional.

Ok album, some good tracks, solid 3 and would listen a third time to see if Alabama or Harvest grows on me

Few classic songs.

Some stuff I like, some of it I found boring. That kind of bluesy stuff isn't really my thing, overall, but I get the appeal. Will deserve another listen.

Pas dingue dingue

The handful of classics (you all know the ones) are what make ‘Harvest’ worth a listen. The rest of the record, however, feels surprisingly second-rate, especially ‘A Man Needs A Maid’, which is up there as one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard.

Decent, but you need to be in the mood

Some good moments

A great album, no doubt about it, with a couple of big time classics. Yet, personally, it's a bit too tame for my taste.

Overall a pleasant surprise. Never really listened to Neil Young before. The origin of the Nelly sample caught me off guard.

Pretty much as I had expected from the reviews: a flawed masterpiece. The orchestra sections don’t gel with Young’s polarising voice, but folky-er tracks like “The Needle and the Damage Done” are great. Solid album which is underwhelming in some parts, and excellent in others.

Melancholisch

Neil Young removed all his albums from Spotify so this one was a little harder for me to get a hold of. I’m not a huge fan of Neil Young’s voice and his folk is a little too close to country for me. All said, this album was not nearly as bad as I was expecting. I enjoyed quite a few songs (A Man Needs A Maid, Heart of Gold, Old Man). Fav Track: Words (Between the Lines of Age) 3/5

Leaving the politics of this album aside, probably because they’ve been analyzed and referenced to death, I’d like to focus on a deeper truth explored in this document: the quest for discovery as a race against time. Indeed, this album is aptly named, for the harvest is plentiful, and the workers are few. Whether it’s the junkie or the philosopher, we’re all searching for meaning, and we have a limited time in which to discover it.

No access on Spotify

I think I've got this on vinyl somewhere, it's fine, nothing special though.

Over rated for me. I just don’t really like his tone and I don’t think the orchestral stuff is necessary. Knocked another star off for whoever decided to pull the album from Spotify.

I’ve only heard this one before and I remember really not liking it. Second time around…is a mixed bag. There are some utterly amazing songs but some very mediocre ones and a couple that just hit rock bottom for me. Overall though, I would revisit it.

Enjoyable but not my sound

my heart sank when i saw the words Neil & Young. however i get why this is his biggest album, its not all shit high pitched country squealing. obviously there's some cos neil young is gonna neil young but yeah i still have my ears and sanity in tact after listening to the album.

Genre: Country Rock 3/5 A big budget, Hollywood sounding country/folk rock album, Neil Young's Harvest is a pretty good album, overall. The big orchestral swells thrown in the mix was something I was not ready for, and, while not adding very much in terms of musical quality, gave some of the songs a sense of gravitas that otherwise would've been missing. Heart of Gold and Old Man, the big hits, are both great tracks, and I particularly enjoyed the outro, Words. The rest of the album is decent country tune here, bland folk tune here. The Needle and the Damage Done is a neat little live acoustic track, but the setlist doesn't rise to the occasion as often as you'd like. But, not bad.

Well I listened to it.

Haunting. Familiar. Wholesome.

Fav tracks: - Harvest - Hearth of Gold - Words Least fav: - There's A World

Liked it, not spectacular

My previous and only exposure to Neil Young was his 2016 album with Promise Of The Real, a fun, if generic, rock outing with Willie Nelson's sons. As such, I delved into Harvest hoping for something similar, and yet I found a folksy country album which was more John Denver than John Mayell. Not that there was anything wrong with it, mind. It was tuneful in places, sombre and emotive as country albums are to be. Each track saw a variation in musical arrangement, with the acoustic guitar twangs of Harvest being followed by the sombre pianos of A Man Needs A Maid. Other songs like There's a World sees the use of an orchestra to full effect, this could easily have passed of for an introduction to a musical about, well, a new world. Overall, this album was a fine display of Neil Young's musical sensibilities and songwriting range. Would I revisit his works, maybe, but probably not this one.

Some classics here, but the album as a whole does not grab me.

I want to like it more than I do. I think there are some real standout tracks like Heart of Gold, Out on the Weekend, Old Man... but the rest are just okay for me unfortunately.

couple of classics

A couple of tunes!! The needle and the damage done, of course Heart of Gold. Words is also a cool tune. Neil himself condemned Alabama as being a bit immature and bitchy and I can agree with him there and nothing needs to be said about A Man Needs a Maid (VOM). It's a mixed bag for sure. I can't help but love a steel guitar lol. I'm going for a 3.

Neil Young wrote a couple of fantastic songs throughout his career, but most of his songs are chaf or filler at beast. On Harvest, Heart of Gold is fantastic. All the rest however, is somewhere between fine and pleasant. The album was definitely better (tighter songwriting) than Tonight's The Night, which we already listened to from this list. But it's still not much more than fine background music.

Not a bad album. Songs like "Heart of Gold" and "Old Man" are particularly strong, although, on the whole, I wouldn't say this album blew me away.

Couple of excellent tracks, not as good as Harvest Moon though. Might listen again

I thought it was really good but also really quite boring.

I don't know Neil Young, so I'm kind of intrigued for this one. It's a lot folkier than I imagined with things like Sweet Caroline, the slow pace is good. Good - Harvest, Heart of Gold, Bad - Art - Classic, simple, nice font, the orange moon against the beige is beautiful.

hmm...ok...

I wanted/expected to rate this higher but can't quite justify it. For every well-crafted country nugget like Heart of Gold or The Needle and the Damage Done there's a meandering plodder that just doesn't excite me. The closing track is nice though - there's half a great album here...

Far better than the previous album thrown at us by the generator (Tonight's the Night). Some great hits. Though I still struggle to make it through a whole NY album in a single sitting

classic grooves

Hi: Out on the Weekend, Heart of Gold, Old Man, Alabama, The Needle and the Damage Done Lo: A Man Needs a Maid, There's a World Neil Young's country-rock album is ever-so-easygoing with wispy pianos and sleepy guitars, anchored by Heart of Gold and Old Man at the center of the whole presentation. Unfortunately, these true classics are flanked by overly-dramatic clunkers like A Man Needs a Maid and There's a World...They feel so far out of place with their ensembles and harps, I can't even. Still, it's not an awful album, and the good outshines the less-than-good.

Så tråkigt Hahaha men också ganska bra

Basic Neil Young - still don't like his voice, but the music is solid

I can never tell if I like Neil Young or not. I think I do. I hate his voice, but not as much as I feel like I should. In any case, this album is a little too theatrical and "busy" for me. Play the guitar/harmonica and sing, Neil. That's all I want from you. Heart of Gold, Old Man - stick to that. Also, The Needle and the Damage Done is a stand-out track.

A Man Needs A Maid - wtf

Had a few listens and definitely a grower. Will certainly revisit, some good folky rock and Neil Young's vocal range sets him apart. Heart of Gold a standout track.

Gentle and slow album mostly. Seems to get heavier towards the end of the album. Wouldn't pick myself, but no issue if someone else put it on. Enjoyed Old Man, and Alabama

it was fine? a couple songs were pretty neat but nothing that made me love it.

Con gusto de vuelta con Neil Young, aunque en mi opinión menos brillante que ese On the Beach. Mucho mucho rock country en esta ocasión, en especial Out on the Weekend, Harvest y Heart of Gold, excelentes.

his best, but now that kind of music for me.

Not my usual listen but some great guitar parts.

Decent album, but Neil Young's voice is really just not my favorite thing. Great guitar playing, but only a couple songs I'd see myself coming back to.

soft drums likey

meh with some notes of good

-Last 3 tracks are like way better than the rest of the album. They save it from a 2 -"Alabama" is great, basically because it is really similar to "Simple Man"

Rock folk. Bastante bueno.

ok wasn't really catching my attention

i LOVE this type of music. neil young is so comforting- i prefer some of his other work, but his voice goes with the music so well, and the album is just beautiful. it seems to fit within one style, but each song has such a different feel to it. my favourite was old man, but i feel like you cant just listen to one song, you have to listen to the whole album

Heart of Gold is a classic but the rest of the album is just a bit uninspiring. I was pleasantly surprised by Alabama though.

Good intro. Enjoyable and relaxing. 6/10

Very solid tbh

i liked Harvest, Heart of Gold (classic tbh), Old Man (close to classic if not), The Needle and the Damage Done, and Words (Between the Lines of Age) Good album but not consistent enough to be great for me. Some amazing highlights tho

Bar a couple of tracks, Ive not heard this album in its entirety. Really enjoyed it.

Really not bad
