I don't like war stories, I didn't like these vocals, and I especially don't really care for or about England
Gaap
I just dont like it. I tried and I had to quit. Maybe its because I dont wanna feel miserable right now haha
What is this? Why is it here? Yea this sucks.
Piece of shit
Too weird for my taste. Skipped most tracks.
slow. all over. message. meh.
No, just no. Didn't finish the album.
Not a great start. Felt mostly weird and detached. Songs about England's battles and horrors, I'm sure it's clever. But I was not hooked
Painful. Occasionally tolerable.
Not for me
not for me
Onnodig.
This album feels like a witch is casting a spell on you, but not like, a real witch. I mean like a self described "witch" who is really some white girl with a nose ring and a book on Wicca who asks to bum a cigarette off of you, but then changes her mind and says gross when she sees it's not a Green American Spirit.
Not a fan,
Pretentious and fart-sniffy. Sounds like a grungy Lana Del Rey. Hard pass. One star.
Almost painful to listen to on a couple songs. So bad it was comedic.
Not my jam.
I listened to this but I don’t remember anything about it except a bit of guitar.
I’m sure some people like this album. I’m not one of those people. .
I had to check if this was the same PJ Harvey I'd had already twice. I do not like the Celtic folk influence at all. She doesn't even sound like the same person singing. Wow yeah I hate this. I love when artists experiment and encourage it but that doesn't mean I have to like it.
it was not my cup of tea. Eventhough it is my style of music.
Nah.
Was this album released this way on purpose or did they accidentally record it this way and PJ Harvey said release it? Either way, horrible!!! 1 star.
The magic of PJ Harvey is completely gone here. This is not very good, and often just annoying to listen to
Let PJ Harvey Shake more like. Possibly the shakeist voice I have ever heard. Also possibly one of the most annoying voices I have ever heard. Doesn’t help adding random sound bits from more popular old songs that just do not fit with the song she plays over them. Overall, ass. 1/10
Ein Song nerviger als der andere.
Too much experimental, too much garage-sound and a little bit too sad.
Meh.
This is too pretentious for me.
Switch on radio 6 in the early 2010s and this stuff is basically every song you'd hear I looked at the Wikipedia page and as predicted it's full of 5 star reviews from the pretentious music press. A middle aged woman singing about the horrors of young men going to war is borderline cultural appropriation!
Wow. I didn't know what pretentious really meant until I heard this thing. When I got to that song "England"... no words.
This sounds like if Fever Ray was British. And sucked.
Uninteresting, grating, and airy. Nothing I found remotely enjoyable or engaging. Completely skippable
Oh that's right. PJ Harvey. That pitchy, shaky, shrieky voice that somehow passes for talent. OK. Thanks for the reminder that I don't get it.
No, just no
I refuse to believe that anyone truly enjoys PJ Harvey. Even the artistic value of this “album” is low.
Din like it. Not god-awful or anything, but even with it being pretty experimental, I did not really find it interesting at all. Some songs were straight unlistenable tho.
Not really enjoyable
Didn’t do it for me 🫠
Ok
lyrically this album just kinda wasn’t great. It struck me as a mix of angst-ey middle schooler and a middle school girl writing in her journal. OIL SPILL. OIL SPILL. it’s a no from me dawg
Unlistenable. This album came out in 2010. No excuses.
😐
One of the few albums I couldn't finish.
Not for me. Found it dull.
Это их борьба.... Их нравы....
My god this was rough. Why did this make this list? There were a few moments here and there that weren't bad, but overall it was pretty terrible. 1.5/5
Unavailable on Spotify.
Oof.
nah, not something I want to hear again
Was this the one that won the mercury prize? Is that why it’s on this list? Because I can’t see any other reason why you’d pick this album as one of the greatest of all time.
What are you going on about?
Sorry Polly. Wel een leuke sample tegengekomen: Blood and Fire van Niney the Observer in het nummer Written On The Forehead. Highlights: The Last Living Rose Rating: 5,5
Alternative music, I guess. Not crazy about her voice.
I thought at album 1001 I was done. I thought that after 1001 I would have hit every pj Harvey album. Neither of those were true. This list continues to find ways to make me suffer with some albums. I will say this wasn’t the worst pj Harvey album and probably the most palatable. Yet it is still not a fun thing to listen to. 2.5/10
Blegh - this album whiffs of an artist intentionally creating a stinky album because they've won all of the awards and know people will eat it up - and y'all fell for it! If that's not the case, then this record is just a mish-mash of nothing particularly inspired or inspiring.
primera y ultima
Did not like this at all
dude this blows.
I only listened to part of the album because I couldn't stand the voice.
Not for me
Sigh….This album is like musical celery. Tastes kind of interesting but for me there is no substance or nutritional value. I think this chick is more of a poet and def sounded that way. Little too artistic and self serving for my tastes.
Genre: Folk Instruments: 2/5 (I liked the auto harp) Modern Translation: 1/5 Dance Potential: 1/5 Listening Location: Commute to work Favourite Song: None Made me feel: Confused and weirded out. I first realised this was an album about war when I heard the military trumpet in the third track, then I started reading the lyrics. I don’t love albums that make political statements and this was no different. Liked her voice, creative education but not for me. Was nominated for a bunch of awards though.
What is with the bugle thing in "The Glorious Land". I thought some other tab was making noise it was so discordant. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Felt like artsy fartsy music college music that would get the alt hippis to snap fingers and nod about how deep it is
Wasn't feeling it
Nicht meine Richtung
Definitely not my thing, too downbeat and miserable.
This is... not good. It's pretentious, boring, and haz literally zero stand out moments. Someone asks this for every album so I guess it's my turn. Why would this album make it to the list? It's not culturally significant, it's not influencing anyone of note, and does nothing new in any way. It's just crappy indie rock.
Really not a fan of PJ Harvey
Bad
Trash
Goddamn this Obama era jangle rock is aggressively not for me.
Nope!
Boring. Takes no risks, not a single memorable melody. Boo
Nope
Never thought I'd listen to British hipster music, but here we are. Borderline unbearable
Musically starts out interesting but slowly just repeats itself over and over. However, that's not its problem. It's melodically barren and rendered excruciating by the teenage level "oo England is bad war is bad" lyrics. Dreadful self centred low self-awareness moaning so loved by the kind of people that you should avoid talking to at parties.
this music sucks
Boring
Really not that great
Did nothing for me. Quickly became back ground noise and stayed there.
i literally could not finish this album which may be a first for me
Really strange
Did not like
Lots of death and murder lyrics and sharp tones. Not my fav
This is so terrible. I hope that nothing like this happens again through the rest of the 1001 albums.
Sick of it by halfway through
This just kept getting worse as it went on
I like it in theory especially after the melodic noise that is pink floyd. but where that was easy to tune out, PJ Harvey has this way of raising her voice up and down in register that I find very hard to tune out during my day. I turned it off, but I guess that's reason enough to give it 1 star.
Poor
Some of this album is even kinda OK. Unfortunately a larger percentage of it is appalling. Like, uncomfortable to listen to appalling. "England" was the first of it to get a skip. Warbling tosh, the sort of thing you expect to hear from a talentless 2nd year university student at an open mic night. "Written on the forehead" needs to get in the sea.
meh only got 3 songs in
Meh
Too nationalistic to my taste. England’s past glory is BuSh, like for all imperialistic nations.
Dude this is not an album you need to listen to before you die. It seriously sucked ass.
Awful everything
i didn't finish but i dunno i was just not into this
Here we go again with my he-man woman-haters club, but bleghhhhh. The words that maketh murder was interesting, nothing else captivated my attention.
uh, yea I didn't like this.
Not my cup of tea
Absolutely not. I mean I'll try but I did not vibe with her 'Dry' album last time. Not my sound. But I'll give it a try... No comment. 1/10
Première déception. 1 song in and I'm already bored and almost skipped it. I does not really get better and even tho the production is much better than the first album we heard before, it feels quite uninspired. I almost want to stop after 1 third of the album. Okay, I survived to the end, tolerated only one song, and skipped at the last one. Really not my jam I guess, I hadn't been so bored in a while. @+ PJ Harvey, happy that the album is done 1.5/5
i don't know why pj harvey personally seeks me out to make my ears bleed. her voice is too unsteady. it does not sound good. some songs aren't even good when you focus on the instrumentation. i know i'm not usually a fan of folk albums, but i don't even think folk appreciates what pj harvey is doing. not a fan but i have to listen to more albums by pj harvey on this list. thanks for nothing, robert dimery and micahel lydon.
I thought this album was obnoxious. The vocalist was talented but chose to flip and flutter her notes in an ugly way. The moments that were nice were overshadowed by my hatred for the rest.
Not gonna lie, I couldn’t finish it.
4th album from PJ. It's just some boring woman. What is noteworthy about this artist? 1 star for showing up again. Albums fine boring
Fucking English Propaganda. This album blows. Tomorrow can’t come soon enough
Very folks-y and not really to my taste. There is a lot of whiney sounding lyrics that would be made out as unique, but what it really is, is annoying. Best: The Words That Maketh Murder Worst: England
This was a rough album for me. Could not get into the music, lyrics or the voice of the singer. Tried to find something I liked, but just could not find it.... Not a fan. I'd give a zero, but can't figure out how to put vote in without any stars
Composition wasn’t bad just wasn’t for me
This folk rock album is English singer-songwriter PJ Harvey's eighth album. It is loosely an anti-war album about the hardships Harvey's home country has gone through. The music is ethereal, timeless, and soothing. However, it's not my taste. The album seems to be highly credited, but to be honest I'm not sure why. The songs had no attention grabbing hooks or lyrics, and it reminded me of something I would put on to go to sleep. Some listeners out there may love this, but not me.
Had to go back to check that the woman who made something as powerful and visceral as ‘Dry’ is the same woman who recorded this pile of crap. Very firmly in the ‘did not like’ camp. Lyrically, I found the treatment of the theme of war handled simplistically and inauthentically. Melodically things weren’t much better.
This is the third album from PJ Harvey dir me in this project. I read about PJ Harvey getting nominated for this award2and winning that award and selling oh so many records... I still don't get it. While i could get used to the music at a good day, in can't geht used to her voice. You know the feeling that you get, when you get to the dentist and hear the humming in the other room and all you can think of is how you want to be another place far away? Thats' how i feel about the voice of PJ Harvey. She starts singing and it's like a needle piercing right into my ears... You get it...
Boring
1/5 it really got on my nerves the army morning song.
Not good
not really for me
Honestly awful. I get the protest song vibes but the vocalist was not good and the music was generic. Couldn't finish the album.
Hate this so much.
not keen
A perfect lp to die
Thank god that's over. That was a slog to get through, apparently this person is insanely popular? Never heard of her and I hope I never have to hear another song. Grating vocals, weird screechy instruments and noises. Intros that just go on forever. That was a bummer to have to experience.
No words.
Girl... what is this? The Glorious Land might just be one of the worst songs I've ever heard. On the plus side, I've never heard so many positive things said about England. And the last half of The Words That Maketh Murder wasn't all that bad. Maybe it's just not for me because I did not enjoy this album.
Too slow. Not interesting. Music to commit suicide by! Some of the later songs aren't as bad, but still not my cup of tea.
I didn't really enjoy this album. 1.5/5 stars.
did not like
Pas tout écouté, pas ma cam
Not a fan. Never heard of the band, the music was run of the mill, not even sure how it made this list.
Verschrikking
not really me tbh.
Feels much more refined than the debut album by PJ Harvey. Sadder. An eulogy for a kingdom.
