Easily shows why some consider him the greatest entertainer ever.
Great. The more upbeat elements of this album were class - the slower ones were a little boring, but only because of the contrast.
Definitely made me better understand why MJ is the king of pop. All of these songs were very pop-y, but not all were bangers. Rock with You is still the best song on this album
Great album. Well-played and MJ sings his heart out!
Michael wsh
Quincy's flawless production, Michael coming into his own with his songwriting, the incredibly smooth sounds of Off The Wall never disappoint.
Great pop record. Is it better then Thriller?
I like this album, it's a classic and all the songs are great.
already listened to this one before, and for a reason — insanely good
Great album. The lyrics were cheesy but, the music and production were top notch .
first MJ album i’ve ever listened to in full which is shocking from me. a real good time and probably the first album on this list that i’m not shocked to see featured, one of the greatest to ever do it
4th Jan. We began. El danced. Simon was referenced. We danced. 4.1 stars.
Nostalgic, very danceable. Have listened to some of the song so it was nice to listen to the whole thing finally. 8/10
Pretty good
Front loaded with absolute classics - you just have to move. Thoroughly enjoyed this.
Liked some songs, didn’t like others so much. But overall enjoyed it! 4/5
Cheerful, young album of King of Pop, a true intro into what he was going to become in the future, with just a sparkle of mischief and rhythm that makes one's hips swing even involuntarily ✨🪩
Some serious bangers, a few stinkers. Still a classic though
Great first few songs but lost me after off the wall
That's a real good one, makes you want to dance
nice
Allemaal hits en knetter geld, maar moeilijk mee te zingen/tekst te volgen vaak vanwege de hoogte
First half of the album was great. Second half mostly unenjoyable.
Absolutely love this album. I was raised with this album, my dad and I share the same favourite song of MJ on this album "Don't stop til you get enough". Only thing that makes it a 4/5 is some songs do fall off in comparison to some amazing songs.
Enjoyed the disco/soul flavour to most tracks. Great vocals for most tracks. First few songs of the album are the real highlights (DSTGE, rock with you).
I haven't listened to MJ in decades. This is one of those "separate the art from the artist" situations that yields a high album rating for a less-than-ideal creator. Getting this in the same week as Phil Spector feels like I'm being tested. All feelings about him aside, you can't deny how good this album is.
Favorite Track: Rock with You
A reasonable boppy time.
Decent
Slay.
prequel to a classic, can't argue about he value but not my style
Classic Mike
his best album
Strong point of view from beginning to end. I’m not a fan of disco, but the man knew how to write a catchy track.
Better than the past ones fs. Holy out of my life 🥲🥲🥲
Classic, good Michael Jackson. I can see why he was the King of Pop. Excellent music and clearly a foundation for modern music.
A solid pop album, which Justin Timberlake tried to emulate. There’s only one king of pop, Justin.
Goo
4.0 - Very Good
8/10
A blast to listen to, the first half especially is fire but I enjoyed everything bar Girlfriend
Holy sample heaven
Its a cult classic. Honstely probably one of the albums i would listen to the most out of all his work. Dont have too mutch to say because he is micheal. We all know him. A great experience to have listened to this once in my life. Dont listen to micheal jackson on my own mutch but i can see why he is seen as one of the greats of music
yes
Just a great collection of uplifting groovy disco tunes! Love this era of Michael Jackson, he's absolutely electric. FAV SONGS: Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, Get On The Floor, Off The Wall, Burn This Disco Out LEAST FAV: N/A
king indeed
I’m programmed to love. Michael Jackson grew up with this music. It hits me in my core. I can’t fucking help it. I don’t associate his music with him as a person. He’s fucking weird. He’s tragic and he’s ruined a lot of lives, but this album jams.
The album that made MJ take his first steps proper to becoming the king of pop. If you're of a certain age (as I am) you had no choice but to know all the songs off of this album. It's hard to get through the mists of the past and actually try and listen to this album with fresh ears. Whatever, even to the most jaded pair of ears this is obviously a disco/pop masterclass. Would MJ have been as big if he hadn't have hooked up with Quincy Jones? Probably not. Ignore the fact that MJ may have diddled little boys and Quincy Jones gave us the nepo-baby Rashida Jones and just try and enjoy the music. Best Tracks: Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough; Rock With You; Off The Wall
Lots of classics, good songs just can’t stop thinking about the MJ allegations while listening lol
Michael Jackson's 1979 Off The Wall album is a classic dance album that has stood up well to the test of time. While the mid to late disco era influences are up front and present on the album, the musicality and approachable nature shine through the monotony that might normally be found on other "disco" dance records. This is due to the true genius and talent of both Michael Jackson and the remarkable production team that worked on this album. It is a given that a Michael Jackson album is going to sound impeccable, production wise, and that is sometimes taken for granted. However, by the end of the third track, "Workin' Day and Night", I said out loud "who the hell tracked and mixed this album?". I already knew that Quincy Jones surely had a large hand in that but I learned that it was the legendary Bruce Swedien, who was the mastermind behind Michael's other legendary albums Bad and Thriller, among many other very important albums. The amount of instruments and sounds happening all at once, on tracks like "Workin' Day and Night" specifically, it is incredibly hard to find a useful space for each of those individual elements on a track, from an engineering stand point. To be able to have found a place for each one and for each element to shine on it's own and contribute to the whole song without sounding muddy and clumsy shows Swedien and Quincy's incomparable talent. Even with the ballads in the middle of this album, Off The Wall moves from start to finish. Without being aggressive about it, this album found a way to allow you to sit back and have an enjoyable listening experience but at the same time keep your head nodding and toe tapping. 7.5/10
I’m surprised that I already know the first two tracks.
Just a great feel good album that makes you want to get up and dance.
Probably a bit unfair that I'm comparing this in my mind to Thriller, which really changed the game with regards to "every song could be (and was) a massive hit", but it's inescapable. This one ends up as merely a very good disco album (which makes me realize I need to listen to more disco), with "only" two absolute classic songs (as if that's not more than most pop albums manage).
Before I was old enough to really know what music was I was really into Michael Jackson’s music (I’m not saying I was really into Michael Jackson, behave). There’s lots of footage of me as a child singing along to songs off of Off The Wall. I have a long term memory of every song on this album, so listening to it again was a nice trip down memory lane. His musical chops can’t be denied, and some of the greatest pop songs of all time can be found on this album. There’s one or two duffers, but this is such a solid album I’ll be listening to it again soon.
Classic Michael, much better to me than Thriller. One I spin on my record player. I can't tell you the last time I listened to Thriller.
Fantastic classic disco/soul/poprock album with some of his best songs.
Good later half is week
God this brings the funk and it's also got incredible bass playing on it, if you ask me, the best on any Michael record. I'm on the fence between a 4 and 5 but I'm gonna be a tiny bit harsh just because I think he went on to do even better.
Energy boost
Again separating the artist from the art here. This is a great album, and you can hear how it leads into him making Thriller. Highlights: "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock With You"
Bänger esimesest loost. Quincy Jones ja Michael Jackson olid oma aja geeniused ikka. Pool albumit õõtsun elevusest ja funkist kaasa, siis tuleb "She's Out of My Life" ja ausalt öeldes natuke rikub selle vaibi. Album algab väga tugevalt ja lõppeb pigem nõrgemalt. Sp ei ole ta täis viit tärni, vaid 4/5.
Great album. It's still follows the Motown formula a bit too closely to have the brilliance which was to come in his next albums. But, no complaints. This is a brilliant production.
3.8/5 B+
Fabulous album of pop/r and b. Quincy Jones is a genius producer and it shows on this album. Song composition is up and down - this isn’t Thriller. But the high points are super high.
Thank You Quincy Jones. Some bops in here
Yeah it’s one of, if not his best. A pop album with songs that you can’t help enjoying. An opening track that is very hard to beat. He wasn’t called the king of pop for nothing, shame about the noncing. 4.8/5.0 Best Song: Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough
It's his best album, before any of the weirdness comes in, just pure funky soul R&B. Its impossible to not want to dance to this. I could listen to it all day, its such easy listening, you can really see why he is the king of pop. What a voice. Best song: Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough. I think its his best ever song.
Super funky disco vibes. Has some classic tracks and the deep cuts are enjoyable but not as memorable. It's early MJ so the production and vocals are basically perfect. It can't beat Thriller but it's still solid.
Well I absolutely love ‘Don’t stop til you get enough. I’d play this album again
I'm not sure the last time I heard this album, or if I've ever heard the entire thing, but I didn't realize/remember that it's full-on disco (excepting token ballad "She's Out of My Life"). The classics earned their status, and I appreciated the deeper cuts like "Workin' Day and Night." I think it sags toward the end with "I Can't Help It" and "It's the Falling in Love," but "Burn This Disco Out" is kind of a banger.
What a way to start my morning. I love disco, ballads are hard for me
Bi1
4.5/5 si ça existait. En vrai certains sons sont vraiment moins bien foutus quoi.
Damn il est bon
Very fun, not his best but still great.
Classic Michael Jackson
Funkero total. Espectacular Michael. Un crack. 8/10
In July of 1979, Steve Dahl hosted Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park in Chicago, IL where fans were invited to bring disco album that would be blown up between games of a double header. The entire stadium descended into mayhem, and the second game had to be forfeited. One month later, Michael Jackson released Off The Wall and saved all of those morons from dynamiting this masterpiece with plenty of disco inside that even they almost certainly enjoyed.
Rock With You - the most glittery disco track ever? Immaculate stuff, a window to the future of 1980s pop music while also being firmly rooted in the strengths of 70s disco and funk. Jackson's voice sounds unreal here. The singles off this aren't chart toppers, they're chart devastators. World wasn't ready for Thriller. Favorite Tracks: Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, Rock With You, Girlfriend, Burn This Disco Out
Thi would get 5 stars but for the number of lousy songs. the production and performances are excellent - particularly Louis Johnson on bass.
I've always liked this better than Thriller but it all goes to hell when Paul shows up.
4 stars for Quincy Jones
What can we say about MJ that hasn't already been said? Dude's so much of legend that allegations of inappropriate behavior with kids doesn't even make us like his music less.
Everything after rock with you is golden.
An absolute tour de force by a voice of a generation and Quincy Jones. Quincy, with obviously something to prove, bringing together the best musicians of the industry to blast Michael Jackson into pop stardom forever. Special shout out to Rod Temperton's tracks, including Rock With You, a stand out track on this incredible debut.
A fun lighthearted album that shows why Michael was the goat </3
I don't think this album has held up as well as some of the others - too entrenched in the lingering disco era. But a Michael Jackson album that's not his best is still better than many other artist's best albums.
Grooves all around. Was kinda hoping that an album called "Off the Wall" would go a bit more, y'know, off the wall with its energy, but still a good funky time nonetheless. After listening to this I read through the Wikipedia page on Michael Jackson's life (which I did already know about but had never actually read up on in much detail) and couldn't help but reflect on how incredibly sad it would be how he ended up Faves: Rock With You, Off the Wall, Get on the Floor
1001 Albums Vol. 0003: Off The Wall ============================================================ Introduction: This is the first album given to me that I have heard a bit of before. I've heard all of the notable hits such as Rock With You, Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, and a bit of Off The Wall. I've actually at least heard snippets of every song on this album. I can't remember exactly what I heard in those snippets, yet I remember them as sounding pretty good. The same can be said about the songs I've heard in full. The general mass seemed to think this album was pretty great when it first released as well. All three of the songs mentioned above managed to become hits with the masses. Factors such as this helped Michael Jackson achieve mainstream levels of success when this album released in 1979. From my research, this was Jackson's first solo album in which he decided to stray away from his musical roots which he learned during his time as a member of the Jackson Five. There is clear genre blending between pop, funk, disco, rock, and so on as well. I can already say that this blending was masterfully done from the songs I have already heard. With all this said, let's get into what I would assume to be the best album I've heard on this site so far. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Track 1: Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough - Whenever I start a new album, I need to get into the mood of the genre I'm listening to in order to know whether what I'm listening to is truly good or not. It may be because I've heard this song many times before, but I was instantly captured by the mood this song wanted me to feel. The high energy that emanates from this song is simply incredible. Combine this energy with Jackson's high-energy vocals, the catchiness, and the enjoyability to get a song that is genuinely incredible. The amount of layers this song has is genuinely incredible as well. There are so many instruments and vocals that gently weave their way into the melody that the listener will only notice if they're attempting to listen for everything. The masterful combination of funk, pop, and soulful aspects presented in a simple yet memorable melody help Jackson use his vocals to his fullest potential. The song is not lyrically driven by any means, yet this aspect simply helps highlight the uniqueness and vocals of this song. The mixing between vocals and instrumentation feels perfect on this song as well. I can clearly tell what Jackson is saying when he wants me to understand what he is saying. The production is definitely a highlight on this song as well. The quick horns and quickly changing instrumentation is highlighted in a way in which the listener can clearly hear. The solo on the bridge is definitely a highlight of how good this song's production is as well. The last aspect for me to mention with this song is its lyrical meaning. There are various interpretations of what this song could be saying; obviously, Jackson himself said that the song can mean whatever one wants it to mean. That being said, I personally decide to go with the mass and believe this song is a reference to a sexual experience. The lyrics are simply too suggestive. It seems like too much of a coincidence that almost every line in this song can be related to something sexual in some way to not be about a sexual experience. This basic meaning is normally something that I would have a problem with, yet I will admit that there is enough variety in the lyrics in which someone could interpret the song as something else. If it is about sex, it doesn't throw it directly in your face without you being able to have any other opinion. Going back to the route that this song is about a sexual experience, the way in which the lyrics are delivered in some cases, Jackson occasionally repeating slow and sensually, provide a bit of creativity that I haven't seen in songs with a similar meaning. The melody itself coincides with this lyrical interpretation as well since...well...sexual experiences are something magical, memorable, high-energy, especially if to the extent that is seemingly described in this song. Overall, this is a genuinely great song that still manages to sound unique even to this day. It's one of the best I've heard so far on this site, definitely worthy of the score I have to give. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough Score: 11/10 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Track 2: Rock With You - This is yet another amazing song. It was one of the big hits from this album too, and I can definitely see why. It doesn't carry the same high energy the previous did, yet it manages to capture me to the same extent the previous track did. This song's melody is much more mellowed and sensual compared to the high energy of the previous. It feels a lot more dreamy in both its lyrical meaning and melodies. The drums followed by the mellow synths and gentle violin in the intro provide a perfect initial melody to get into the mood of this song. The melodies and instrumentation that follow are equally great as well. Jackson's vocals in this song are much more relaxed in the previous to accommodate for the more relaxed structure as well. The production sounds way ahead of its time too. The genre blending between rock, pop, and soul is masterfully executed on this song as well. The dreamy lyrics perfectly match the melody of this song. The descriptions of love and wanting to rock with someone perfectly match its dreamy tone. Overall, this is another great song. This may have to do with the fact I've heard this song many times before, yet I still believe it to be a masterpiece. (Reevaluated my first twenty-five albums and decided to bump this song up from a 10/10 to an 11/10) Rock With You Score: 11/10 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Track 3: Workin' Day and Night - This album simply does not stop providing great after great song. Comparing it to the last two, it is somewhat worse, yet it is still incredibly good. It brings a mix of energy between the previous two songs. It's extremely fast-paced while not being nearly as profound as the first track. It sounds much more like the first track than the second, however. It brings the same mix of funk, rock, pop, and soul to the table that we heard before. The drums here (and really on every song so far) provide a clap-like sound with a very quick, funky mix between a bell-like and wood-like sound sublimated in the background. This combined with the quick precision in which it is played managed to capture me instantly. Much like with the previous two songs, Jackson's vocals shine here. He manages to mix his voice with the melodies and chorus perfectly. Lyrically speaking, this song has hints of love in it as well; however, this is actually taken as a negative implication in this song. It implies that a man is dissatisfied with his work schedule and that he isn't able to spend enough time loving his wife. She says that he should continue this work schedule, leading him to conclude that she must be seeing another man. This lyrical meaning is pretty simple, yet the way in which it is conveyed is creative enough to where I enjoy it. It mixes well with the repetitive melodies of the song as well. The occasional breaths of exhaustion presented in this song are a very nice touch as well. My only critique that I have about this song is that it does manage to somewhat wear itself out over its five minute runtime. There isn't too much being added unlike in the other songs too keep it enthrallingly interesting all the way through. Overall, this song isn't quite as good as the previous two, yet I still consider it to be an extremely well-written song. Workin' Day and Night Score: 9/10 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Track 4: Get on the Floor - This is the first song off of this album that just screams something that you would hear on a disco floor. It mixes a bit of pop in as well, but disco is the clear forefront of this song. As with many disco songs, this song absolutely flows with energy. It's quick paced nature, groovy guitars, familiar horns, and explosive chorus help this song achieve the said flow. Like with everything previous, the production on this song is amazing. The mix between instrumentation and vocals is clear even in the chorus when everything sounds just a bit explosive. This is absolutely no critique, it actually helps with the song's sound if anything. The lyrical context with this disco melody harmonize very well too. The song's most basic (and my own) interpretation is that of someone trying to convince someone else to dance with them on a disco floor, simple as that. This song doesn't need to have a complex meaning for me to like it. Like I said above, this simple meaning fits the fast-paced disco beat perfectly. My only real complaint with this song is that it feels a bit like it wants to make the chorus sound as catchy as possible while neglecting the verses or bridge's appeal. This neglect is clearly present, yet it isn't necessarily a big issue at all. This is still a great, enjoyable song nonetheless. Get on the Floor Score: 9/10 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Track 5: Off the Wall - Well, here we are, the title track of the album. Right away, this song starts off with a very, very captivating section which builds up to a release into the song's main melody. This part genuinely impressed me. The main melody itself reminds me of the one we heard on Rock With You. It has a more laid-back, magical sound. The vocal harmony present in the chorus is an element of this song that I am a fan of as well. This aspect only aids the overall vibe the song creates. I like the change to a low vocal when "live it off the wall" is sung as well. The production value on this song is of extreme quality as well. Other than what I've mentioned above, there isn't really much else to mention with this song musically. That being said, this song has my favorite lyrical meaning thus far. It encourages listeners to let go of the worries that consume their lives. It encourages the listener to be more carefree while still prioritizing what is important in life. This message coincides well with the album's name. Every song we've heard so far speaks of great joys such as love or encourages one to simply enjoy life. This overall message combined with the magical melody make for a great song. This is a great message to represent the album as a whole as well. Off the Wall Score: 10/10 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Track 6: Girlfriend - It's unfortunate that Jackson didn't either completely scrap this song or change it to make it more interesting. This is the weakest song on the entire album so far, but that doesn't mean it is bad at all. Everything else has just been so damn good that this feels weird to listen to. This song has the same downtempo pace of the previous, yet it doesn't feel anywhere near as complex as everything we've heard so far. The melodies try to make a magical sound similar to Rock With You or Off the Wall, yet it just falls flat of accomplishing what they did. In fact, this magical melody isn't welcome in this song at all. The lyrics of this song indicate someone in a someone in a relationship with a girl. This sounds fine until you realize that this girl is already dating another man. The song then goes into detail about how the couple will have to tell the boyfriend and how they will be each other's new partners. In some context this may be fine: the girl may be dating a man who is abusive; yet in the culture we live in today, I think that many people will instantly jump to the idea that this song depicts a girl cheating on her partner for her own gratification. I would hope that Jackson wrote this with the intention of the former, yet I can't help but get the latter interpretation. Other than simply not being as complex as previous songs, the chorus simply consisting of "do-do-do-do-do" is something that I do not like either. The song feels a bit too short as well. It didn't really feel like the song explored the potential harmonies and melodies it could have created. Overall, this is definitely the weakest song on the album so far. It is still genuinely good, yet it doesn't compare to what we have heard so far. Girlfriend Score: 7/10 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Track 7: She's Out of My Life - This song threw a complete curveball into what we have heard so far. This song doesn't speak of one enjoying life, yet rather the exact opposite. It speaks on the pain of losing love, losing someone who cares about you most. The lyrics to this song are incredibly strong in my opinion. They convey what it feels to not only be left by someone who genuinely loves you, yet it conveys the depression that follows from the increased feeling of loneliness and worthlessness it creates. The melody is very simplistic, yet that works in the song's favor here. The song is extremely slow and Jackson's vocals are very somber as well which only add to the atmosphere of the song. The sadness in which you hear in Jackson's voice at the end of the song is genuinely touching too. It genuinely feels like I'm listening to someone's saddened emotional state. Another aspect that I love about the song is the added instrumentation during the section of the song that speaks of learning. The lyrics in this section describe how our character is learning about love from this terrible experience they are currently going through. The soft instrumentation indicating small glimmers of hope in this section is a really nice touch that just adds to the complexity of the song. Overall, while this statement may be a bit controversial, I think that this is genuinely a great song. In my opinion, this is on the same level as tracks three and four. She's Out of My Life Score: 9/10 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Track 8: I Can't Help It - I had heard that this was a pretty front-packed album, and I think I'm starting to agree with that statement. This song yet again attempts to have a more slow, methodical melody and chorus, yet it doesn't accomplish this to the same level as the greats that we've heard before. This song is absolutely better than Girlfriend, yet it is definitely one of the weaker on the album. There isn't really all that much that this song does that we haven't already heard on this album. The soft drumming is nice. The slow addition of instrumentation is nice as well. The chorus's vocals sounds nice too. (Like always) Those are pretty much the only unique things I can think to mention about this song's music. The lyrical meaning is pretty similar to past songs as well. It describes someone who has an overwhelming sense of love for someone else. The lyrics are pretty nice and the verses' lyrics in particular are some of the deepest we've heard on this album so far. Other than that, there isn't really all that much to mention about this song. It's overall just a pretty nice song. I Can't Help It Score: 8/10 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Track 9: It's the Falling in Love - Like many previous, this song attempts to capture a magical tone. It does so to a greater extent than Girlfriend, yet I would categorize it at around the same quality as that song. It doesn't feel as if it tries anything unique with its melody, the clear overemphasis on the chorus, and the overall duller vocals from Jackson bring this song down to that status for me. This song is still absolutely good, however. There isn't much else to mention about this song's music other than what I've already mentioned, so I'm going to move on to its lyrical meaning. This is a case where the lyrics of the song initially appear to be mismatched with the melody of the song you're listening too, yet closer analysis of the song structure and lyrics indicate a sophisticated level of depth. The song's melody has an almost reluctant tone to it. It still carries that magical tone of previous songs, yet it doesn't do so to the same extent. This perfectly matches the lyrical theme of the song. It describes someone who has felt nothing but hurt in past relationships they've had; however, they feel themselves falling in love with someone yet again. Despite this seemingly good thing, the feeling of love only brings them sadness. This meaning is something that feels genuinely deep for some of the themes explored on this album so far. Overall, though I do find this song to be uncreative compared to some of the songs we've heard so far, I find this to be mostly excusable for its lyrical meaning and how it connects back to the melody. This is yet another good song on a great album. It's the Falling in Love Score: 8/10 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Track 10: Burn This Disco Out - Like I said before, it feels as if this album is running out of ideas. This was most apparent on the second half of it. This is yet another song that I still consider to be good, yet not as great as some that we have heard before. It brings back the high-energy melodies that we heard throughout some of the album, yet it doesn't do anything creative with them or feel as well-written as previous songs. The energy this song gives off isn't nearly as infectious as it wants to be either. Other than that, there isn't really much to say about this song's music. It's lyrical meaning isn't all that different from some previous songs either. It again conveys the message of being carefree, joining a group on the dancefloor all night. This message was conveyed much better in Off the Wall. Overall, I don't really have much to say about this song besides that. It's still a good song, better than the previous two, yet it's nothing special either. Burn This Disco Out Score: 8/10 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Conclusion: This album was great, really great. The genre-blending that appeared on some of these songs were masterfully done and the production sounded amazing. The overall message of the album of living carefree is something that I really enjoyed. That overall message fits the genre of disco really well. The addition of some more sad songs to keep this album real was a nice addition too. It felt like it managed to strike a pretty good balance about trying to convey serious topics in life while still encouraging the listener to live more carefree at the same time. Jackson's vocals will always be amazing as well, yet they are extremely amazing on this album. He is one of the only artists that I would instantly be able to recognize if someone were to put him on randomly. Much of the music here still feels incredibly original and unique long after its release. Again, like I mentioned above, this was a really fun album to listen to. That being said, it wasn't perfect in absolutely every regard. For instance, I will be one to agree with the general consensus that this is a very front-packed album. The one seven and all eights that I gave were in the B side of the album. Moving some tracks around may have increased my perception of the album by a bit, or it may have completely ruined the creative flow that poured from the A side, but I do believe that a bit of rearranging could have been done. That being said, even the worst of the worst on this album are still pretty good. Girlfriend is the closest we get to a bad song and it's absolutely not bad at all, just a little confusing. Overall, this is an album that I genuinely appreciate. There are some songs that I will almost definitely be listening to again at some point simply because of how catchy and unique the music is. I will say, however, despite the fact that I have not heard Thriller yet, (and I likely won't for a very, very long time. Might be my next album though, who knows.) I believe that Thriller will be better than Off The Wall... ============================================================ Off The Wall Score: 9/10 Song Average: 9/10
Хорошая ранняя работа Майкла. Мне понравилось.
Yeah, probably the only album of his that I could actually put on. His best in my opinion
Cracked some code. It just sounds fire
Fun record. He invented the song that is all chorus. No Love In An Elevator without this.
Great album for the most part. I think 4 stars though because it's got a couple that are meh
Great album. His first with Quincy Jones, and it’s proven to be a great collaboration. Mix of rock/pop/funk/r&b styles. Still sounds good in 2025. Notable songs include Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough, Rock With You, Get On The Floor, Off the Wall, Girlfriend, She’s Out of My Life, I Can’t Help It.
First of all, it’s always fun to listen to a mega star before they become the mega star. You can hear the stardom, it’s just not fully formed yet. Given this was pop music released in 1979 it’s heavily influenced by disco and funk. It also has way more love songs than it should.
This album has all the things you want in a good Pop album, catchy lyrics, good hooks, and just overall easy to consume. I’m not a huge pop fan overall but Michael Jackson is known as its king for a reason. Overall a great album, not much else to say. Favorite track: Rock with You Worst Track: She’s out of my life
“Off the Wall” was MJ’s first collab with Quincy Jones, you can really hear that magic, diverging from Jackson Five sound. This has more artistic freedom, much more grownup. Tight grooves, lush arrangements, and that mix of funk, soul, and disco that just flows. Every track feels alive. Easily one of the smoothest, most danceable albums ever. Can't help thinking of who MJ ended eventually up to be. Too bad.
So, the first MJ project that felt independient from the Jackson 5/Motown sphere, it is a good one, but the 1-2 combo of Dont Stop Til I Get Enough and Rock With You is worth the admision ticket. I'm more of a Bad MJ guy, but you cant go wrong with off the wall
Klassisk Michael - nogle rytmer som virkelig giver én lyst til at danse. Jeg er pjattet med Rock With You
This is a great album, you can already hear that signature Michael Jackson sound that would take the world by storm in the years to come. Standouts Don't Stop 'Till You Get Enough Rock with You Off The Wall 4/5
I've been interested in getting into MJ for a while. It's cool to see this earlier part of his career. His smooth vocals are supported by a backing band with tight drum and bass grooves, choppy funk guitars, and the occasional tasteful keyboard solo (like on the opening track). There are too many catchy hooks on here. Favorite songs: Rock With You, It's the Falling In Love, Off the Wall.
Just for Don't Stop Til You Get Enough and Rock with You
I’m not a fan of the disco era, and although this record is pretty “disco-y”, all in all I think this is a pretty good album. Maybe part of it is me getting wrapped up in the nostalgia of my college days, but I have a fondness for a lot of these songs. I particularly like She’s Out of My Life; I think the weakest song is the Paul McCartney penned Girlfriend, which surprised me since I am a big McCartney and Beatles fan. Overall though, I still have to give this album four stars.
Quite nice, I enjoyed it
The first two tracks go hard, and the rest of the album feels like a funky cooldown.
Some of the King of Pop's pre-pop bops (Sorry)
Solid album
Another Michael Jackson record that is brilliant in isolation, but so difficult to rate because I cannot separate the music from the man and his actions. So much now feels inauthentic in retrospect. I am not a disco fan, but this is as good as it gets. An evolution from his Motown work into the infinitely danceable and confident songs, this really is a masterclass in pop under the thumb of Quincy Jones. It is reminiscent of the growth of someone like Stevie Wonder (who wrote "I Can't Help It" and it really just sounds like a cover), and some of the sounds even feel derivative of him. It all really feels like a climax of the disco sound, and once this was done, nothing more could really be added that wasn't already done. But it also extends into funk and R&B that is still fresh and not a retelling of disco mania. Jackson's voice and now-cliche vocal fills are really what help elevate this beyond a well-produced album into something iconic. It's a 5-star for the first half, then gets weaker. The cover of "Girlfriend" is a bit plain; "She's Out of My Life" is good but feels dated and really slows down the momentum; "I Can't Help It" would have been better in Stevie Wonder's hands; and "It's the Falling in Love" feels dated.
A bunch of classics on there. 4
i gotta hand it to him, it’s funky
It’s great and starts really strong. For me it gets a little lackluster mostly on the second side with the slower, more ballad type songs although with Michael’s voice it’s hard for any of these songs to be bad or even mid, they’re all good to a certain extent. The first side though was pretty perfect with the first song being one of my favourite Michael Jackson songs and the following ones having some amazing funky instrumentals. The bass on “Get on the floor” and the guitar on Working day and night” for instance were prime examples of this. The last song on side B though brought it up again to that level and made for a great ending. I feel like this is a kind of build up album to Thriller in some ways as it’s a less perfected and produced album with some less great songs but it’s better than Bad in my opinion. Favourites: (as i mentioned) the first 4 and the last song. Overall, 7/10.
His talent is on full display here. Before he went off the rails. Not my taste, but can't deny it's good.
A couple duds, but overall, packed with classic jams.
Loved this. The first half of the album is disco heaven. Highlights for me: Girlfriend, Off the Wall, Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.
fun old album
One star for Michael, three stars for Quincy.
Bueno
Immaculate disco vibes on the A side, followed by a drop off on the B side. This is truly good poppy, funky disco and perfectly put together. Music alone, this has some brilliant high points and it if willing, can immediately take you out of your current headspace. It’s like an itch you want to scratch. However, it won’t be for everyone and the full span of MJ’s life colours any work reviewed posthumously. A scraping of a 4.
очень понравился! классный грув фанки вайб, местами погрустили, местами потрясли плечиками, местами у-ууу
Disco Demolition Nights notwithstanding, there's a reason this particular flavor of dance music was so captivating to basically the entire world in the late 70s: perfectly comfortable grooves, lived-in, organic production, and an appealing emcee in Jackson. For years people have debated whether this collection is better than Thriller; for my money, the highs aren't as high here - there's nothing as instantly iconic as "Beat It" or "Billie Jean" - but the lows aren't as low either (nothing as clunky as "The Girl Is Mine"). Nevertheless, it deserves all the acclaim it gets - and now, after Everything With MJ (you know what I mean) it serves as a monument to all that was lost. Look on his works, ye mighty, and despair.
I find myself in a situation where I'm listening to Disco more than I'd like. This entire album seems to be disco that I genuinely like, so for genre I don't like this is a surprising rating
4/5
This might be my first MJ album that I've listened to all the way through? I loved it. Starts out with two BANGERS and kind of dwindles from there. Not that the rest is bad at all, just doesn't compare to the first two.
One of his bests and and a good look at early pre pop michael in his disco era.
Some great stuff here, and a real step forward for the future civil suit defender. Not everything is top notch though, so only 4⭐ from me.
Not my favorite Michael Jackson album. I have always liked Michael though. I only knew Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough, Rock With You, and She’s Out of My Life. This album was a little too disco-y for my taste.
Superb!
A great pop album, very catchy and make you want to move your body Fav song - Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough 4/5
Oh yeah he really is king
A really good album, I liked Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, It's The Falling In Love and Burn This Disco Out.
It’s very disco. There are some bangers on here though.
Classic
Great album, probably my second favorite of his. It starts off real strong but lags a bit in the middle. It feels like this was the bridge between disco and modern pop music. A much more pared down MJ without all the pomp and circumstance of his later albums.
When future king was starting to step up to his crown. Disco with its own spin, still not perfect
Rock with you o She´s out of my life también.
Strong opening with some classic bangers, but this album loses some momentum on the back half. Still a really solid fun album overall despite that.
This is where the magic begins. Though already pretty much a seasoned vet in the music industry at 20, MJ signed on to Epic Records and began his production partnership with the legendary Quincy Jones. Thus spawned "Off the Wall" and the rest is history of course, but this is where MJ really reintroduced himself to the world and forged his disco/funk/pop sound that would define the height of his career. This album is certainly synonymous with disco, but it still lives on as a timeless pop, R&B, and funk classic too. "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough", "Rock With You", and "Off the Wall" are all disco-pop classics that make you wanna get out on the dance floor. The latter half of the album does sort of suddenly shift towards more of a sentimental mood, displaying the endless versatility of MJ. Massive names in the music industry such as Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder lend their songwriting talents for side two, and you can definitely hear their influence in these slower & more emotional tracks. Definitely a tale of two sides here, but I much prefer the higher energy of side one. In today's episode of "Hey, I Recognize That Sample!", we've got "I Can't Help It", which hip-hip heads may recognize as the sample source for De La Soul's "Breakadawn". I love discovering new sample sources in old music.
What can I say? Its Michael Jackson, the album slaps
A-sidan är riktigt bra phillysoul. B-sidan inleds starkt med titelspåret, men där emellan, fram till avslutande Burn this disco out, är det inte särskilt bra. I mångt och mycket låter det som the Jacksons snarare än the king of pop. Han har inte riktigt hittat sitt eget uttryck ännu. Men det är jäkligt bra ändå. Vacklar mellan trean och fyran.
Scandal noted.
A quality way to end the week.
This had some really good, classic songs. And some songs that aren’t quite as iconic, but a little better than “filler.” Feels like that’s the textbook definition of a 4.
Excellent album, though not as strong as “Thriller”. If Thriller is a high 4*, I feel this is a low 4* 4/5
Just off the strength of the two hit signals it earns four stars. Will come back to this one again.
Das sechzehnte Album, das ich schon kannte. Banger. Zwischendrinn zwar zwei oder drei lahme Songs, die nicht reinpassen, aber ich mag die Atmosphäre. 3 1/2 aber ich runde auf.
4/5 - great album, but the next one was the only reason this gets a 4 instead of a 5
Better than Coldplay
Love this album, constantly on in our house growing up courtesy of two older brothers. Off the wall and I can’t help it are my two favourite tracks. Also joint (Thriller) winner of the best album co-written by a bloke from Clerthorpes. 🤣
Forgot what a classic this album is. MJ's voice is superb and every track totally earns its place on the listing
Starts strong
Pretty good.
Dancabke
incredible disco/funk/pop album that really seemed to have paved the way for MJ. what a start as well - to open with DSTYGE and RWY made it captivating from the get-go. it was good to hear that most of the tracks that followed were just as good. it's not my favourite album of his which is why it's not getting the 5*, but it was a phenomenal listen and i'm looking forward to listening to more MJ.
Day 64 First listen- Such an iconic album! Rock with you is one of my favourite songs of all time! I love MJ's voice in this recording so much. (4/5)
Der er en grund til at MJ var den største popstjerne nogensinde. Stærkt album med masser af groovy sange.
A top notch R&B album. Listening made me painfully aware of how much Michael hid himself — he didn’t live his life “Off the Wall” or “work the 9 to 5” and I don’t think his two heartbreak romance songs about women probably reflect his own experience. So, a very good album, that is key to understanding MJ’s career and influence. But not his best work — that was yet to come. A 4.
A pop classic limited by its insistence in being radio-friendly
Standouts Don't Stop Til You Get Enough Rock With You Get on the Floor Off the Wall
On the same level as Thriller
hef ekki hlustað mikið a hann en funky vibee
Ligger helt i skille mellom 3 og 4. Låtene ligger jevnt på rundt tre, men så har platen et par låter som trekker kraftig opp. Lander på en svak firer denne gang.
Definitive disco. Weaker than Thriller, but what album isn't?
track 1 to 5 and track 9 are bangers!
A great late 70’s blast. Had some good moments but the songs started to blend together at the end.
First time hearing some of MJs “ladies man” songs. Can certainly understand the gigantic stardom as even the songs I’ve never heard before would be #1s but in comparison to “Don’t stop til you get enough” and “Rock with you” they’re mere side tracks.
Well it’s sure not on the wall…
the best Michael Jackson album BUT i do love teddy riley and the Dangerous new jack swing album...
Loved the last song on the albim
Guy's the king of pop for a reason. Cover to cover banger. I prefer the hits on this because an MJ deep cut or soft song isn't his specialty. But neither here nor there. Listening to this Friday morning before labor day weekend. Iconic way to run it.
A vibe
So that's why
The “King of Pop” (though here still very young and not yet crowned), Michael Jackson was already a household name from his Jackson 5 years. Off the Wall marked a huge departure, proving he was more than Motown singles and family fame. Teaming up with Quincy Jones and a host of top-tier musicians, Jackson delivered an album that blurred disco, funk, soul, and pop into something sleek and boundary-pushing. I wasn’t really a Michael Jackson fan growing up, as his his style never clicked with me, but listening to this record, it’s impossible not to hear the raw talent and sheer musical power. Tracks like “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” and “Rock with You” cemented him as a solo star, while the deeper cuts showcase just how versatile he could be. At the time, critics were positive but somewhat muted, often dismissing it as just another disco album. In hindsight, though, it’s clear Off the Wall was a pivotal turning point for Jackson’s career, and maybe for pop music itself.
Ah hell, what the fuck do I give this one. Disco is probably in nobody's top-three genres -- MJ makes it fun. There are some total ass-burgers on this album ("Girlfriend", "She's Out of My Life"...) -- "Don't Stop" is a paradigm-shifting, ultra-groovy album-opening masterpiece. MJ was a cock -- also the King of Pop. Is it a 3 or a 4? I'm going with 4 for now. You won this time, Mikey. Fave songs: - Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough - Workin' Day and Night - Get on the Floor - I Can't Help It - Burn This Disco Out No, I didn't include Rock With You. I think it's dated and boring. Sue me.
Really good stuff, makes a good case for him being as popular as he is! The slower second half is not really my jam, but still not bad.
Really get-on-the-floor great stuff! There's a reason Michael Jackson is one of the all-time greats of pop.
Stunning production, brings the vibes from that time, with some songs definetly going to playlists. Surprised by other songs that are not Disco
This album is strong from beginning to end. Growing up listening to electronic and house music, it’s clear how much influence these tracks had on that genre and how often they’ve been sampled. It’s easy to understand why this album has been such a key part of both pop and dance music history.
I love this album. One of his best albums. May be better than Dangerous. I just heard this since it's release anniversary just past.
pretty good!! starts off with a great song, good vibes pretty much for the whole album
4/5
Never listened to this front to back. It’s a great pop album, surprisingly funky even on some of the deeper cuts, percussion carries it subtly throughout along with horn section. Can see why this is often cited as a stand out moment in pop music.
my elementary school bully was a full-blown michael jackson stan in like grade 2, she used to put her initials + mj in hearts on all of her stuff, and listening to this album unearthed that very random memory. regardless of this, there r some bangers on here 👍
Funky and danceable. Some great songs, some duds
First song is such a vibe
Despite everything, the man really could make music... it would be easier for me to point out which track I like the least than the most, but in a good way. I don't remember which song but there was one that didn't fit into the album as well as the others iirc, but the rest is fire and made the last 40 min of my work day fly by without me noticing.
What an absolute legend. Pop usually isn’t my cup of tea, but how can anyone resist dancing and singing along to Michael?
Peak
Great slice of disco pop r&b whatever.
Not the best MJ Album but a good one.
A fun album! I felt like it kind of lost some of its momentum part way through, but it was still a wonderful listen.
Great production, couple of classics as well
Man, the first half of this album KICKS ASS. I was thinking, man, easy five stars, this rules. And then we go to the back half and it's slower and r&Bier and balladier and it just kills its momentum. I don't think these songs are particularly good (nor particularly bad). Feels like filler. Why can't someone make an album that's not too long, not too short, and just has good music? Dammit.
A middling album elevated by having a few all time bangers. The man gets zero stars but the music gets four.
It’s the start but not the best from MJ. Also, it feels a bit weird listening to him so tempted to add a MJ Tax. However, will try to stay onjective
Pretty good! I really enjoyed the disco energy
Despite the obvious collection of timeless disco numbers, especially universally-recognised Rock With You and the emphatic opener of Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough, and the title track, and all of the first five tracks, really, they’re all brilliant, Jackson’s first proper album as a global superstar is perhaps a little too polished in sections. I do believe that is my only real criticism here, though. I don’t personally enjoy the slow numbers like Girlfriend, but I’m positive that my opinion doesn’t hold the same as all. Again, the first five tracks exist as one of the best first sides (plus one) in popular music. He is the king, after all. Michael Jackson might just be the most famous contemporary person of all time. That’s the sort of weight he holds in music, that you can say that statement with some truth. And Off the Wall is a brilliant collection of disco, only rivalled by himself, three years later.
First album on the list I've already listened to in full. Classic album, definitive pop with the disco roots. On a revisit are there any relatively hidden gems? Best track (not known before) - Workin Day and Night Some real bangers, 4.5 stars. Round it down to 4 for the few slower numbers I'm not a fan of
Really good!
I like the two most famous songs from this album and everything else was okay.
4.0/the hits hit.
Freakin’ heck this is so groovy and just altogether uber listenable. Kudos to the musicians givin it that jazz-funk-pop-rock fusion.
rock with you is a classic
Disco pur.
His best album, IMO.
Off the Wall is the sound of Michael Jackson stepping into full creative control for the first time and proving he was more than just a Motown child star. Produced by Quincy Jones, the album blends disco, funk, pop, and soul with a sense of precision and polish that still holds up decades later. From the opening groove of “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough,” it’s clear this is a new chapter for Jackson — confident, stylish, and irresistibly danceable. Tracks like “Rock with You” and the title song show off his ability to balance smooth vocals with tight, sophisticated arrangements. Even the more mellow moments like “She’s Out of My Life” reveal a depth and emotional control that hint at what he would go on to achieve. While it doesn’t quite have the cultural weight or sonic ambition of Thriller, Off the Wall is more relaxed and playful, which works in its favor. At it’s a fantastic pop album that captures an artist just hitting his stride, and one of the best examples of late 70s crossover R&B done right.
Great album
Pretty good album. I like more of the first few albums compared to the last ones.
I know this probably an objective five star album, but its not for me. Still enjoyable, just not something id put on generally
It's pretty solid Will I listen to again: 73%
4.5/5. Really good, but I think I prefer Thriller and Bad a bit more, and those tow are fives.
Really great
Hard to argue with those Quincy Jones arrangements.
Funky Michael. Love it.
Genre: Disco Michael Jackson’s first massive LP release, Off the Wall, is a classic. Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough and Rock with You is one of the best 1-2 punches in disco history. There are some other great disco jams (Get On the Floor), but also some ballads (She’s Out of My Life) that unfortunately dampen the experience a bit. The disco is fun, and jaunty, but it sags a bit on a slower B-side. Great album, though! 4/5
Seems like this was an important album for Michael to branch out from the Jackson Five. It's also important because it pushed pop music in new directions, more disco/etc. Musically, I love the first two tracks ("Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" and "Rock with you") but the rest are just OK. It's cool that Michael is credited with writing the first of them. Also interesting that Paul McCartney wrote a song on this album (Girlfriend) though that song is just OK.
Sometimes even pedophiles get 4 stars.
King of pop at the beginning
The album is really good for this style of music, but I am just not a fan of this style of music. 4 stars or B-.
Fine album.
mhmmm ok
I was a bit too young for peak era MJ, by the time Dangerous came out he was already a pretty odd public figure and it was hard to separate this from the music he made. I don't think this is his best album, Thriller has more bangers but still a good one from a more carefree era.
It's pretty good few songs I didn't know but worth a listen
Old school classic
This is basically a razor-sharp funk album with pop vocals. It works. Pretty slick.
First 6 songs are bangerzzz. Some of my favorite MJ songs. Falls off after that. Should be said that the pedo stuff is pretty fucked up.
This is so 70s in the best way. The instrumentation, the happy choruses, disco beats are so dancey and fun. This definitely lives in Thriller’s shadow, but its not a knock on the song quality. Youve got to be in the mood for it, but theres no question that this is great. You can see how MJ went on to dominate the 80s after this. Also, McCartney worked with MJ even before Thriller! Crazy Favorite tune: Off The Wall
Between 3 and 4 stars on this one for me. Love the openers so much it put me over the top 2 stars just for Don't Stop Til You Get Enough. This song FUCKS. What a groove on this puppy. The horns in the chorus, the percussion, the bass line, the keyboard dabbling. It's all working. Quincy Jones fuck me up. Back to back with Rock With You is an all-time one-two punch. This album is already at 4 stars even if the next 10 tracks are white noise. Rest of the album: not that great. She's Out of My Life is some cornball shit. The last 30 seconds of that song almost made me take back a star. But I think that was the era, and they were figuring out MJ's sound so wanted to throw some stuff at the wall (or off the wall!?!?!)
Really nice to crank up the volume a bit more and listen for all of the little layers and parts. Production on this is just so interesting. The bass lines are fun! I might go on the record as enjoying this more than Thriller.
I enjoyed the variety on this album. I still think Michael’s talent as an entertainer was ahead of his time.
A very familiar album and is miles better than Prince
I think this is a stronger album than Thriller. shows off his range, lots of different styles & tempos. do feel like the 2nd half of album had much slower tempo & wish it had more of the variety as 1st half did.
Pretty cool disco vibes.
3.5, rounded up because the first half is great.
Great pop album, Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough might be Michael’s best song
Another good album by the King of Pop. I didn't enjoy it as much as the other one of his I've had so far, Bad, but it was still a blast. Starts out with the total banger Don't Stop Til' You Get Enough. Rock With You was also a lot of fun. Next few songs move along nicely, lots of fun to be had. Girlfriend kicks it up with some great saxophone music. She's Out Of My Life was wonderful, slow and chill. It's The Falling In Love was good too. Fun album, really enjoyed it. Best song: Don't Stop Til' You Get Enough
It is understandably overshadowed by the his subsequent album, this is when we really start to see MJ's signature style appear and there's a lot of range here too
Well duh this is one of the best albums ever prolly bc Michael Jackson hits are all fire and basically all Michael Jackson songs are hits! It's gonna be at least a 4/5 for Rock With You alone. Also it's so crazy that MJ looked like that wtf Don't Stop Til You Get Enough: Iconic with a really good beat and a nice kick off to the album. It's never been one of my favorite, favorite MJ songs, but it's definitely super catchy and popular for a reason. You can't help but feel groovy when you listen to this song! That falsetto is killer. Rock With You: One of the more perfect songs .. ever? It's really, really good. Its quality cannot be overstated. I love the instrumental on its own but his vocals Workin' Day and Night: These songs I do not know. But this is very good and feels a little less flashy... more down to earth I guess? The little breathing part is good. and the "duh-duh-duh!"with the guitar(?) Catchy. Get On The Floor: Good bass(?) riff. Ok well you know what I'm done reviewing the individual songs here but they're definitely all really good. I'd say my favorites were Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, Rock With You, Workin' Day and Night, Girlfriend, and maybe... Idk they were all good. I'd say this is a high 4 but it's not exactly the kind of thing I'd turn on for a casual listen so it doesn't really get a 5 even though it's definitely 5-worthy... !
very catchy album
Legendary for a reason
Poppy disco fun.
Very groovy and funky vibes. Most of songs are great but there are few average ones. Overall not a bad album, would definitely listen some songs again.
Pretty good, pretty pretty pretty good.
Dancy
Fun funky and makes sense for being iconic. I recognized multiple songs right away and felt a little silly not realizing they were MJ before.
AU
Quincy Jones and MJ - when it works it’s pop bliss … but this album changed pop music, defined pop music and created a sound that was epic.
Loved MJ. Loved the Disco vibe
Im going to a disco party every week from now on.
Album starts strong with the hits, gets a little more sadboy R&B toward the end. I've never really dug into Michael Jackson but he brings a good disco-funk vibe with this album. I dig the guitar rhythms and plucky bass on most of these songs, also the multi-part harmonies elevate the vibe. Lots of great horn section, too (but not really my vibe).
The first half of the album is rammed with bangers, but the second half falls off a cliff a bit. Some nice bass lines in the second half, sure, but the songs can't match the first half.
There's a reason he was the king of pop. Despite not being a hardcore MJ fan, I was still exposed to many of his songs growing up. They all have a familiar and rhythmic beat that makes following along easy and bob your head to 🕺 I remember playing one of his albums on cassette and slightly holding the fast forward so he sounded like a chipmunk. I think it might have been Bad though, not Off The Wall. Overall I think there are bangers in here that most would enjoy.
spacebort did he molest children or not Billy Shakes it's up in the air so -1 star
He is the king of pop for a reason.
is the template for the how it started/how it's going meme?
This one was really fun. Hopefully not the sole choice for Michael Jackson album on this list. But it was fun nonetheless.
Kinda crazy that this is actually Michael’s FIFTH solo album. I always thought this was his first solo album. That’s wild. Next you’re gonna tell me that he’d been singing and making records for over ten years before he broke through. Wait, WHAT!? This kid was a seasoned veteran by age 20, with fifteen albums between his solo work and The Jackson 5. I always considered this the “Michael Disco Album” but I’m guessing some of his others are too. I’m not gonna fuckin listen to any of them to find out, though. I have a lot more appreciation for this album now than I used to. Especially since it seems like the LAST real album of the disco era in general.
Uplifting funky dancing party feel good of an album
4.5
Terrific first solo venture with Quincy M.E. First side is all gold with some seriously funky disco workouts plus out-and-out classics like Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough and Rock With You. Second side gets a bit soppier but still fairly good. Overall I give this 4 bags of Shamone out of 5 and some cupped tubs of Hee Hee.
The first half of the album is bops all around. So fun! Cleaned my house to this between dancing around. It got slower in the middle and started to lag, but ending the album with PYT was a good move. Solid.
Classic disco pop.
Funky funk funk funk. This is a disco masterpiece, obviously. It’s got R&B, Disco, Pop, a whole bunch of stuff. The bass playing and production is what really stood out to me. I don’t think I can really state the impact that this album made on popular music going forward.
I like young fresh Michael before the supernova of fame burned so hot, and the weight and weirdness of all that. There are clunkers here, especially ballads, but the production and songwriting and playing and electric conviction of his performances compensates, and I just can’t drop to three stars. I’m not a huge MJ fan, but this might be my favorite.
Classic album. Both a party album and an easy listener.
There are some absolute bangers on this album!
Final boss of disco, but she's out of my life and I can't help it let it down
Very good, but MJ gets better than this.
Better than Thriller. I said what I said.
I'm yet to stop as I haven't had enough
A couple of dirges but mostly a really strong, fun piece of disco
King
Not giving that guy any stars
9/10
Its good, not really anything too mind-blowing, it feels kind of like laying the groundwork for Thriller, but it does feel very 80s-ish, while not being in the 80s. I really like the synth and funk stuff, its definitely what I think he does best, especially later on Thriller. The ballads are also okay as well, because I think he just has an amazing singing voice, and quite versatile as well. Idk the downsides are the same with all pop, that thematically it just feels watered down a bit, but I feel like you have to look past that to enjoy any pop music. Favourite songs: First 3 and last 4. My favourite 'hit' song has gotta be don't stop 'till you get enough, I've just always liked it. The last one has also gotta be up there, I love the bassline. Overall around 7/10
Bops
So many great moments on this album and it's got one foot in the 70s and one toward Thriller. It gets a bit weaker as it goes on, but still hits.
Good!
If you didn’t know anything about Michael Jackson when you heard this album for the first time, you’d take a double take at the album cover and artist name when you first heard his spoken word part on “Don’t Stop”. This is funky and a good fit for the time. With Michael Jackson though, it’d really big a good fit in any decade. He just has that delivery. I’m not even that big of a fan with this type of music. I guess I should really call it sensitive funk.
Okay album. Easy to listen to.
The best songs are bangers. Some others are dated and not my style anyway. Not into the ballads.
Groovy melodies and excellent production. Couple dud ballads, but overall a really fun listen.
So many disco bangers, but I’m deducting a star for the pure sap that is She’s Out of My Life. (I accept there are other, stronger reasons for marking down a Michael Jackson album.)
Pop was like this????
Standout Songs: Rock with You Workin' Day and Night Off the Wall It's the Falling in Love Burn This Disco Down
Classic
He had one-and-a-half good albums remaining in him after this. Don't defend Bad. You can't and shouldn't. After that it was embarrassment. But in 1979 the man could FUNK. This nugget is a pop bomb that announced that Michael had PLANS. And it still rules. I might like this better than Thriller. I'll get back to you on that.
It's a good listen. Songs got pretty similar, but they aren't bad. 4/5
When you listen to Michael Jackson, you get the beat, the rhythm, the lyrics and great arrangements. Good disco era album.
pretty iconic album
5/19/25. Great album, each song is a good pop hit. Fun to think that this was only the beginning of a legacy for Michael.
Classic songs
Fav tracks: Don't stop till you get enough , Rock with you , off the wall , can't. Help it absolutely generational start but tapers out towards the end, all songs are pleasant to listen to with standout bops.
stary dobry album
Quincy Jones is the fuckin' man.
Funky, energetic, and wonderful Dance energy to it. Not a huge fan of Michael’s vocals - personal vice - but one of the most inspiring Dance records of its time.
