Reviews (page 7 of 14)

Michael Jackson's "Off The Wall" is undeniably a great album, even though it's not quite my cup of tea. The album showcases Jackson's talent and versatility, with a mix of energetic tracks and smooth ballads. The production quality is top-notch, and the songs are well-crafted and memorable.

This shit is heat, not my the greatest MJ album but has all the makings of a good one.

Workin’ Day and Night

Probably my most listened to MJ record since it was stuck in Dandan's tape deck for a whole summer. Love it.

Those first five tracks are simply untouchable, one of the best parties to ever grace your ears - and mostly animate your hips. The other five are fine, but you'll be so pumped about that A-side that you won't even really notice the step down in quality all that much.

Groovy, classic, timeless, and a precursor for I’d think much greater things to come (idk i haven’t listened to a TON of MJ before).

MJ with some more pop bangers. Production is incredible, as is his singing. I liked the disco influence. Favorites: Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, Rock With You, Get on the Floor Least Favorite: Girlfriend

Groovy

Even though this isn't my favorite style of music it's hard to say anything bad about Michael Jackson's music. Off the wall was his first go at creative freedom. An assemble of world class musicians and Quincy Jones production makes for an album that's dialed in with an infectious groove. The only track I don't enjoy is the slow ballad She's out of my life - it slows things down on an otherwise fast paced and exciting album. However, it does showcase Michael's vocal range.

Fantastiskt disco album med otroligt funky låtar

Nostalgista settiä taas. Huomaan että tätäkin tullut kuunneltua harvemmin kokonaan kerralla, tai ainakin alkanut keskittyminen herpaantua puolivälissä. Tämä kyllä tosi yleistä – useista levyistä muistaa vaan ekat biisit kunnolla ja ehkä jonku sinkun loppupuolelta. Alkupuoli ihan bängeriä, loppupuolella osa biiseistä ei ihan lähe. Haparointia kolmen ja neljän tähden välillä.

Classic all I got to say

Very Stevie Wonder I thought on listening to it, and sure enough there he is. fits into his canon as seamlessly as it shines in Michael Jackson's!

Groovy, funky, full of soul. Passionate and lively. Obviously iconic.

pretty good. it's got a few of his #1s on it

So good. No skips

So many jams.

Enjoyed a classic album

I've always had a blind spot for MJ. This is likely due to the fact that I grew up hearing all of the many many controversies and scandals and South Park jokes. Honestly, up until the day he died, I kinda thought MJ was always a joke. No one ever really liked him or his music. And I just never really went and listened to test that thought. So I enjoyed this album quite a bit. Always happy to have a push to listen to things that I for some reason never bothered to before.

Listened to this as I was working outside in Palm Springs post Coachella - love Michael and hearing songs I hadn’t experienced before. Liked Get on the floor and Off the wall, also she’s out of my life

Half the album is fantastic and the other half is a little stale. The background beats are repetitive and some songs drag on too long. Michael Jackson’s voice and adlibs carries the album and makes for great music while jammin in the shower. 7.5/10

Off the wall is my first front to back listen of a Michael Jackson album. It starts off immediately into one of the best songs on the record and carries the disco influence throughout. For me the album was great at the beginning and then somewhere in the middle around the track “Girlfriend” I felt a tone shift and personally didn’t love a few songs here.(even though the writing should be phenomenal with Paul McCartney and Stevie wonder songs being in this section) The album ends with songs that got me hooked again and in particular I thought “Burn the Disco Down” was a great way to end it.

Problematic artist. So much talent for pop songs.

There were a few songs I hadn't heard. Obviously a solid album.

Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough!

Never thought I'd enjoy Michael Jackson.

He's called the king for a reason

Before Michael got weird. Very good album. Very funky, delivered in very well produced manner. Musically precise, almost flawless. Jackson just sings and mostly avoids many of those stupid squeaky sounds he delivers on Bad and Thriller. Very listenable and danceable (thinking a little disco here).

Really good album, it was one track away from getting full stars

Michael Jackson is a weird case for me. He’s one of the most acclaimed artists ever, however most of his music hasn’t resonated with me that well. Though, I’m glad to say that I liked this more than my other outings with him. I think what makes this album for me, compared to his other albums I’ve heard, is that it doesn’t feel as dated. One of my main problems with *Bad* and *Thriller* is that they can both feel very of their time, however I didn’t really have that problem here. For being over forty years old, the crisp production on this album has aged better than I expected. Michael’s voice is nice as always, he always delivers. I also love the brass, strings and keyboards on this album. The brass and strings can feel angelic and energetic, which makes for a fun contrast. The keyboards feel so dreamy, I love how they sound. The best example of this is the ballad *She’s Out of My Life*. It’s simply a beautiful track. However, this album isn’t without its billboard hits, and those hits deliver. *Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough* has potent strings, brass, and vocals, it makes for a great opener. *Rock With You* also has nice brass and strings, vocal layering, and synth sounds. That said, this album isn’t without its flaws. The album can feel a bit stiff at times, both musically and lyrically. The album unfortunately starts to wane in the middle because of it. It sort of picks itself up at the end, but it isn’t really a saving grace. With that in mind, I can say that this is may be my favorite MJ album, even with its flaws. I’d still recommend this, it’s a pretty good time.

Very good in the beginning, corny in the middle. Probably his second best album.

Sheesh

I know there are MJ songs that I like, but they aren't really on this album (even though I do know the singles). I feel like Michael Jackson was a huge pop culture figure throughout my life, until he died (and I still remember the moment when I found out) but I never listened to his music all that much. It's not particularly emotionally evocative, I guess, or at least this album isn't, but the sound is extremely pleasant, the tempo is good, and it's marginally nostalgic. I'm at a 3.5 but I'll give it a 4 since it was better than I thought (and certainly a step above Wilco, my canonical 3). Highlights: 'I Can't Help It', 'It's the Falling in Love', there's a song called 'Off the Wall' on the 'Off the Wall' album with the lyric "off the wall"!!

I mean, I enjoyed it. It's definitely catchy. And you gotta give credit where credit is due when it comes to the King of Pop. But a whole album of MJ was surprisingly too much for me.

To be honest, I like this album more than Thriller. The exceptional production is still there, but I think Off the Wall has less dead moments and filler (there's still some, though). It's more energetic, and the instrumentation is better, in my opinion. It's a simple but fun, catchy, and memorable album.

My first Michael Jackson album- this one had a lot of hits. He was clearly very talented, and the production on the album was top notch. Overall- enjoyed it a lot

aso grundsätzlich scho nice aber ewie ned so die überbangers druffe gha. vlt esch au eif d erwartig zu gross wölls halt de michi jackson esch. aber grundsätzlich nices album und au paar gliket

A lot of the songs sound like they're working on becoming Don't Stop Till You Get Enough but can't quite get there.

Iconic but not my style

Solid disco album

When Michael was happy he made wonderful beat-driven, positive music without the studied, tortuous pretension of his later output. He just did his thing, and he did it to a world-changing standard. Free from the shackles of Berry Gordy or the rest of the Jackson clan, he’s free to express himself and on Off The Wall he lets loose. It’s peak disco pretty much all the way through. The cover of Paul McCartney’s Girlfriend is a welcome diversion of style. Tom Bahler’s She’s Out Of My Life adds a Broadway tinged feel and adds a level of emotional depth otherwise in short supply. I Can’t Help It, the Stevie Wonder contribution has his characteristic jazzy/gospel chords and rhythmic complexity. Songwriting contributions from Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder are bound to help but Jackson is no mean writer himself by this point, albeit not yet a very stylistically or lyrically diverse one. Having Quincy Jones producing doesn’t exactly hamper an artist either. Highlight: I Can’t Help It.

Off The Wall starts out incredible. The last half of the album is just ok, the song choices aren’t great. This was happening in the space before Michael was consumed by his own trauma and shows who he wanted so badly to be. The talent and genius of Quincy Jones cannot be denied and deserves to be mentioned.

Peak mid

Good ol' Michael

Prime MJ. Can't go wrong there!

wholeheartedly understand why this man was so popular. my feelings were all over the place listen to this. i will listen to more michael because of how good this album is.

I got spoiled with this album! Michael Jackson is one of my favorite artists of all time and this might be my second favorite album by him. Admittedly, I've only dabbled in some of the songs outside of the hits a few times - "Get on the Floor" has an excellent bassline that I totally forgot about and is a massive standout track to me! "Off the Wall" is my absolute favorite Michael Jackson song and I return to it frequently. I also like that this isn't a super long record, it doesn't overstay it's welcome at a brisk 42 minutes. Love this one!

88% Best: Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough; Rock with You; Workin' Day and Night; Get on the Floor; Off the Wall; Burn This Disco Out Must-Hear? Sure. Sidenote: why isn't this album categorized as a funk or disco album?

Great disco vibes on this one, didn't want it to end.

The entire album just oozes with grooviness. I found myself dancing at my desk while listening to it on multiple occasions.

as always stellar vocals and this might be his best

That was great! Had heard some of the songs obviously, but you can see how this built to his huge 80's breakout. Fun time all around

A couple real classics, but I enjoyed the stuff I've not heard a lot more than I expected. Bass is super funky and the drums are staying busy. There's some more experimental moments that I was expecting for a 70s Disco/Pop/Funk that I think worked really well. Working Day & Night was kind of wild with the scatting, and the bell chime in the back reminds me of an alarm clock or something. The horns are awesome, and the breakdown all worked so well. Mike's vocals sound great throughout, some of the high notes are really high and while he was still young, it was still impressive. There's a few snoozers, but it moves fast and there's a few really catchy tunes. It wasn't better than I expected, but it was good in a different way than I was expecting. On Burn This Disco Out was that Mike on the hook saying "keep the Boogie alright" & "everybody just get on down"? Maybe he did actually have a deep man voice that he was hiding from everyone?

Great listen. Helluva one-two punch with the first two tracks. Classic album, but I felt like I didn't need to play it again any time in the near future. 4.5, rounding down.

great listen

classic Michael

Cooles Album, viele gute Songs

****A good album, very lively!

It might be off the wall…but it’s on funky fire !🕺🔥 The one and only Michael Jackson coming into his own as an emerging sensational talent on this record, musically leaps and bounds beyond all output he released proceeding it. The first in a trifecta of albums (Thriller & Bad were on the horizon) composing brilliant R & B danceable beats with funky disco pop and strong ballads with soul vibe. Track 7 is the outlier here, however the lyricism and emotional performance delivered reserves its place. Layer in Michael’s signature vocals and Quincy Jones’ smooth production and you have quite the remarkable sound mix that created a lasting legacy for who would become known as The King of Pop! 🎧 Classic Track Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough 🎧 Hidden Gem: She’s Out Of My Life 🎧 Personal Favourite: Get On The Floor I was nowhere near expecting to be as impressed with this album as I was, especially after repeated listens that convinced me how great it really is. Although overshadowed by the behemoth that Thriller became, Off The Wall was clearly the catalyst to the masterful duo of Jackson & Jones as together they were on the precipice of superstardom! 🖼️ Album Artwork: Jackson is clearly uncomfortable in his own skin, look at that forced smile😬 💿 Add to your vinyl collection! Click the thumbs up icon below if you enjoyed my take on the album :)

very very fun pop

Not a big Mike Jackson fan but this is a very good record

Two first songs are the best, rest was somewhat uninteresting to listen to for me. I’m not used to MJ songs being boring.

It was a good album

Michael is fun. Stand-out: It's the Falling in Love

A breath of funky fresh air! I started dancing spontaneously as if controlled by some outside force. This NEVER happens to me. Bonus points for Stevie Wonder.

Whole thing slaps. Listened before I'll listen again.

Really fun album, I liked it a lot, not a bad song. Would relisten

Quincy Jones, excellent. Some great gems in here after a couple of overplayed classics. As always, not necessarily written by Jackson but a decent album.

Yes terrific!!

Great Album

Some classics on here but the second half drags a tiny bit in comparison to the first, and it’s not my favourite MJ album

Classic

Even though the second half of this album feels a bit underwhelming, I still love how smooth the listening experience is as a whole. It may not be his best album, but it's definitely the one that established him as a solo artist and a future megastar. Aside from the fact that it's Michael Jackson, this album is just a really fun disco/funk experience. 4 stars

Meh. Bored of hearing this. It's very, very good pop, but not what I enjjoy.

No private session used for Spotify. This album is a lot of fun. Arguably better than "Thriller", more fun that "Thriller" anyway.

Trotzdem vier Sterne

Truly having to seperate the art from the artist here. I’m gonna let that go without saying from now on. This album is so good. So funky, so smooth, so cool. Just an effortless listen. Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough is one of the greatest songs of all time and it keeps rolling on from there, with the only semi-low-point being She’s Out of My Life. (4.5 stars)

Nice groovy album with a good atmosphere about it. 4 stars

It's disco Mike! Disco, Funk's popper, fancier cousin. It's hard to argue with the catchiness of these tracks. The horns and wiki-wiki guitars are a sexy combination. Michael has amazing breath control. I mean, there's a reason he is the king of pop. It's not something I'd put in regular rotation, but it is full of bangers. Besides the singles other tracks like Workin' Day and Night are pretty stellar.

I wasn’t even really in the mood for this today but the amount of bangers is undeniable.

The King of Pop deserved that moniker, especially when even a relatively mid album such as this is mostly great to listen to, from the funky fast numbers to the more melancholic slow songs. A solid 4/5

This is phenomenal, pop/funk/disco perfection. The problem is that I don't really like pop/funk/disco *that* much which gives a bit of an upper limit to this rating, no matter how open-minded I can be.

Favorite Track: Don't Stop Til You Get Enough

Yeah, this is really good

Listened Before? Y A pop/disco classic. Such a talent here. Amazing voice and songs. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Don't Stop Till You Get Enough

I find this to be the best disco album of all time. However, there are a couple of songs that don't feel as essential as the rest of the record. Solid four-and-a-half album.

All these songs about girls, was it all part of an elaborate long con?

Awesome album

You just cant help but sing along to MJ

The first two songs are the best by far but a lot of the other ones are also good. Beats are funky. A couple of the later songs are slower and kind of boring. Good average song length.

P fun but not like all bangers but not bad

8/10 - Very enjoyable. Michael jackson is always fun to listen to. Don't stop till you get enough and rock with you are classics. But I also really liked Burn this disco out and the rest were groovy.

A couple hits and some other fun stuff. Good album

MJ's disco album. kicked off with Don't Stop til you get Enough into Rock with You, obviously both are bangers I've heard a million times. Wasn't familiar with the rest but I love disco and I'm sure I would have been spinning this nonstop when it came out 3.9/5

Very classic. There's a couple of songs I'm not really into and it's not the sort of thing I play very often but there's some corkers on here. Good old Quincey Jones!

Took me a while to unlock my ears to this album, cream of the crop

Some bangers, but not obsessed with it as a whole

8/10 Highlights: Rock with You Off the Wall It's the Falling in Love

I’ve never listened to a Michael Jackson album from front to back with intention. But I had a good time!!! There was a lot more range in this record than I anticipated and the obviously lots of bangers

Obviously a classic that deserves its place on the list. I wasn’t a fan of the ballads but the more upbeat songs are legendary.

classic generational vocals and undeniably timeless album. no one will ever do it like him. great album but I feel like he has other album with more hits on it, a lot of these songs I've never heard of before. Not this album is bad for that, but if you have an album where every other track is iconic, than it's infinitely more impressive.

Pretty fun album. The thing that makes it not 5 stars is that after a while so many of the songs start to sound too similar.

super funky dance inspired album with some fun Michael cuts that i haven't really heard before. I dig it!

Banger after Banger, what else do you expect from the king of Pop? Got a little slow for my taste in the second half but either way. 8/10

Very groovy album, I really like the bass sound. The hits are great, everything else is good. I've never found a Michael Jackson ballad that I've enjoyed so Girlfriend and She's Out of My Life are my least favorite songs here. Mid 4.

This album is strong from beginning to end. Growing up listening to electronic and house music, it’s clear how much influence these tracks had on that genre and how often they’ve been sampled. It’s easy to understand why this album has been such a key part of both pop and dance music history.

Blast from the past hell healthy and sweet. He looks on the cover of the Album.

Ohh MJ! The one that lead to Thriller. A head bobbing blend of Soul, R&B, and disco. This album may be the link between disco and 80’s pop. What a fun listen.

Some of the classics combined with tracks I've never even heard. Really funky, great tunes. Highlights: Don't Stop Til You Get Enough Rock with You Off the Wall

Feels very fitting for NYE. Luxurious, crisp clean almost sensual production. Instrumentals are perfect, playing is very tight but doesn’t feel robotic. MJ puts in a stellar vocal performance. Album starts with an incredible 6 track run and loses a bit of momentum around she’s out of my life, which I’ve never really enjoyed as a single. Fits a bit better in the flow of the album but still not a fan of the song. Album is incredibly smooth and outside of the aforementioned song every track is great.

Second half isn’t as strong as the first but still a strong 4.5 stars

I thought id like it more, but great intro songs

Love a bit of Michael Jackson. This has some absolute bangers on it but it’s probably not quite my favourite MJ album. Still a great listen though!

The pinnacle of disco production paired with pure pop songwriting and fueled by endless supplies of cocaine and funk. Updating the Motown sound for the synth erA, this album that has been the template for commercial RnB ever since. When you open with an all time great song it's going to be downhill inevitably. The slow jams and ballads stink - skewing way to far to the saccharine schmaltz side and lacking the tight dance grooves that make it endearing. Favorites: don't stop till you get enough, rock with you, burn this disco

Off the Wall is overall a fantastic album and truly a masterpiece. I feel the first half is a bit stronger than the second, not that the second half is bad; it’s SO GOOD. If the second half matched the energy of the first, it’d be an even higher rating for me.

It's disco, but it's outstanding disco. I can't count myself an MJ fan, but I can absolutely respect this album. Lots of good bops, fantastic funky musicianship. The lyrics are about an inch deep - dance with me and let's rock all night, girl. But there are no stinkers - even Paul McCartney's cheesy Girlfriend and the schmaltzy She's Out of My Life are both decent (and more credit to MJ because the original Wings version of Girlfriend is pretty bad). Favorite tracks: Rock With You, Get on the Floor (LOVE the bass on this one - shout out to Louis Johnson's awesome funky bass on this album), I Can't Help It (written by and absolutely sounds like Stevie Wonder), It's the Falling in Love (major earworm, again with great bass).

A solid album from one of the most complicated men to ever grace the planet.

This absolutely kicks in and I thought I was going to hear a masterpiece given I knew what was coming up. And it is certainly a piece of work, but in the end not "quite" consistent enough and tails off a bit. It has some outstanding tracks though, starting with that first song.

Classic MJ

Maybe his best work? Epitome of pop, you just wanna dance

There's some great songs on this album. Don't Stop and Rock With You are an amazing 1 - 2 punch to open with. The production here is great. Lots of layered sounds with out sounding too busy. For me the second half of the album drops off a bit.

What a great album. Slick, simple and killer grooves. Very clear why he became so famous.

Kind of genre-defying. I knew more tracks than I thought. The instrumentation is great. Overall it's a bit funkier than I prefer but the guy was unquestionably an amazing singer.

Hearing this felt as good as I imagine it felt sleeping with dem kids

The definition of pop music, can feel how his influence has made its was into todays music. I absolutely love the disco feel to this album.

The highs are so high but there is some mid here between.

These are some really good bops. Real good album.

definitely groovy and memorable

The pinnacle of disco (?) I cant help it intro findi legiiiit..

Burn this disco out: burns the disco out.

Criminali

ik its ironic considering that one of the big dividing lines this record marks is jackson's departure from motown, but this record more than anything ive ever heard rly makes me consider disco as a direct and vital continuation of the classic motown sound, maybe even more so than many things from motown's actual disco output. jackson and co's vision of the genre here has real grit coexisting effortlessly with the sophistication, obviously labored over perfectionism to the effect of natural free-flowing charisma. inevitably people gravitate more towards the funky bangers on side a but the soul-tinged ballads on side b are where i had most of my thoughts ab classic motown, and as the resident Ballad Stan i enjoy both sides about equally anyway. not at all an idiosyncratic or unexpected choice to throw on during a party but thats mainly because its probably near impossible to hear this and not think about its potential as party backing

Very good album actually. Should have stuck to this kind of music. Whatever. I’m not a MJ fan but this is smooth and nice and sexy.

Not my favorite genre but the album was solid.

We Are The World pjesme.

To valjda samo on moze. Shamon-ee!

Timeless wedding music

I think this is his best album.

Decent album

Trotzdem vier Sterne

Michael was always a bit too pop for me to really get into but this album is, grudgingly, pretty good.

#81 - Very well rounded, Classic MJ

Off The Wall was Michael Jackson's breakout album, and it's obvious why. He comes out of the gate with some of his biggest hits in "Don't Stop..." and "Rock with You". The second half of the album (I'm guessing side B), is a little slower, but it seems purposeful. When you were listening to a record, they basically gave you the option to listen to upbeat songs on side A and slow, emotional songs on side B. While Thriller is his magnum opus, this is probably the most down to earth album MJ made in his solo career. Best Songs: Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, Rock With You, Off the Wall, Burn This Disco Out Worst Songs: She's Out of My Life

4 stars

glitz and glamor! there's a level of sophistication in the songwriting and arrangements on this album that you just don't see as often in mainstream pop music anymore. dozens of session musicians, arrangers and writers came together to make these songs come alive (especially the Jerry Hey Horns!), and Michael Jackson's smooth, energetic vocals tie them all together. this is absolutely the first album that comes to my mind when I think of the disco era, and I think it's largely off the strength of the initial run of three songs. two of MJ's most iconic hits, and the often-overlooked "Workin' Day and Night", which really wowed me. the title track also delivers, of course, but some of the deeper cuts don't have that same sense of impact. despite the front-loaded nature of the tracklist, I think this album still succeeds on a lot of fronts. some of Jackson's later albums succeed mainly on the strength of their eclecticism, but I think I prefer this album's more singular sonic focus. light 8/10.

A solid album and this doesn't have any of Michael Jackson's biggest hits. I tend to separate the art from the artist with Michael Jackson and I'm not sure if that's acceptable or not. Life is complicated. At the end of the day, I like Michael Jackson's music. Shout out to Teddy Perkins, if you haven't seen Atlanta check it out.

This was more funky and disco than I expected and I liked it more than expected as well. He's a legend, but looking at the track listing I thought I really only knew a song or two so was wondering how the others would stack up. Turns out, mostly well! I found myself grooving along to most of it. However, I thought "Girlfriend" and "I Can't Help It" were the low points of the album. I wasn't much for "She's Out of My Life" but absolutely can acknowledge how beautiful his voice sounds on that track, so I can forgive it a bit. Very good, but not quite great for me so it's a 4*.

A classic. Not quite masterpiece Michael, but finally feels out of the Jackson 5 era.

I dont really like Micheal Jackson but I like the funkiness 7/10

Michael could make hits. This album opens with two of the best in a massive catalog of great pop songs. I struggle with these albums serving the purpose of a coherent musical vision. But I don't know that they have to.

Happy, Hype album (8/10)

might be his best

Definitely my fave MJ album by quite a stretch. Strong funk and disco elements here and solid unaffected vocals. A much more soulful effort then the highly mannered overproduced 'Thriller' and the inconsistent 'Bad'.

listened to again continues to be one of the great records

This is a more consistent than Thriller but with nowhere near as many highs. And like Thriller it has a stinker ballad in the middle. Shakes out as a 4.

Great album. I love this style of disco and funk even though I don't listen to it often. There were a few forgettable songs but also some that are amazing.

1 legendary song + like 36 minutes of well-produced MJ disco

We need to bring back the word "boogie"

Post-disco pop music. Some recognizable tracks in there. I remember my aunt had this record on when we went to visit her one time.

It's really hard to separate the art from the artist with Michael Jackson. Aside from his personal life, the overhyped superstardom really drove a lot of his later career music in my mind. A lot of the late career stuff wouldn't have ever had a single radio play if it wasn't him releasing and it made inordinate amounts of money despite that. This album however, it's clear why people were into it. Parts are a bit dated now, but I 100% see why this hit at the time and a lot of it just holds up. Am I the only one hearing "Part of Your World" in "She's Out of My Life?" Did The Little Mermaid take a little more than "inspiration" from that track? Anyway, attempting to separate art from artist, this was an enjoyable listen. I see why it was so big in its time. 4/5

Listened to it before definitely a classic

Beautifully crafted by Quincy Jones - the percussion on "Don't Stop" is wonderfully insistent - and packed with the wordless, other-wordly vocalisations that add more spice. Great tunes, fabulous grooves.

Love this album. So creative, so catchy. In 79, I had moved from California and this was played at all the clubs. 8/10

I’m certain Side A of this album got way more worn than Side B ever did.

Some great songs but not a complete album

While I’d pick Thriller over this album, you can’t deny the magic of early Michael Jackson. Every song gets my body moving and the performances are fantastic.

Not the biggest MJ fan but can’t deny his talent and influence.

Great pop record. Some all-time tracks that are always popular at weddings and parties. We can ride the boogie!

bruh minus one star for being a pdf 💀💀 great album tho

banger

That bass on the opening hit "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" is enough to give this a minimum 4/5 on its own. Sets the tone for the album - an awesome R&B-meets-disco collection with organic instrumentation and even though it's super-produced (Quincy Jones) to a fine detail...it's still not over-produced (even though that makes no sense). Best overall aspect is that there's a great sense of space in all of these songs, it's not too much. Don't care what genre you like or not, and I don't like or listen to much dance music per se, but this fkng rocks. Even though through cultural osmosis his next album Thriller permeates/d everything, I like this first half better than Thriller. Counterpoint: the 2nd half is a marked step down... tracks 6-9 are generously-average which kills the vibe (although the final cut "Burn This Disco Out" does redeem it before the end) a bit. TL;DR: The first 5 songs are a slam-dunk 10/10 then it gets a little....soupy/sappy.... after that, so i'll give it a high 4 overall. 9/10 4 stars.

I've never listened to a full Michael Jackson album before so this was a fun one to get recommended on a Friday. The album starts off by pumping a well known hit into your ears and you're going. I like the upbeat tunes and the complexity of the music itself on some tracks when listening carefully. The title track has some very enticing backing vocals as well. Jackson's voice and exclamations are quite unique but they work well. Adding this to my library so it get's a solid 4*

The King of Pop y'all

Obvious masterpiece with insane production value. The opening track is probably his best song. I love the disco elements and the heavy funk bass combined with virtuoso vocals.

Front half amazing back half nowhere near as good 8.5/10

Honestly really enjoyable aside from the super saccharine “She’s Out of My Life” that just dated this way harder than any of the disco influenced stuff.

Yea disco fun. Was Michael Jackson a monster? Probably The music was good but also this isn't thriller 8/10

He’ll yeah Favorite Track: Rock With You

Still enjoyed this even though it wasn’t just hit after hit like Thriller.

I really can’t believe how many songs I know from this album. I’ve never listened to it before. This is really good.

# 330 : They've done a pretty decent job, great album, I like the hits of course, but this is a fun album and it really gets you in a good mood. Second side is not as much fun, But it's still great. I Can't Help that it had me tapping my feet the whole time! Favourite track : Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough

Very good album, and amazing start to his real solo career. Love the funk and disco influence. Basslines are amazing.

Take disco, speed it up, add really watered down funk horns and top it off with Motown polish. It makes for a really great sound and this is a great album. Stronger on the first side than the second, but when it’s strong it is really strong. It’s hard not to dance when this album is playing. But I’ve criticized disco for being just music to dance to in the past, so why is this better? I’m not sure. It’s definitely not that the lyrics are any deeper on this album than on a random Chic song. Maybe it’s Jackson as a performer. He wasn’t just the singer in a disco band. He was honestly a once in a generation talent. A lot of the material on this album was great but Michael Jackson was going to elevate any material he performed at this time. In addition to his natural talent, he had been training his entire life to be great at this one thing. Michael Jackson was like a terrible science experiment designed to produce the ultimate pop star. It made for an awful human being, but hey ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, a hit is a hit.

This is pre- Thriller MJ with a definite disco sound to it. Two biggest tracks right off the bat, of the two I prefer Rock With You. It's lively nonstop action after that with great basslines, Get on the Floor and the title track are another solid 1-2 punch. We slow it way down for She's Out of My Life, which transitions nicely into the smooth I Can't Help It. I would definitely reach for this again even if it doesn't quite hit the heights of what's to come in the 80s.

Classic MJ. Loved it.

Great album - nice mix of fast paced and slow jams.

Not my favourite, but has some fierce bangers

This is a good Michael Jackson album but not his best. Has some bangers on it, but also has its fair share of misses. Enjoyed it, will listen again for sure.

Phenomenal album. Michael and Quincy took the disco by its neck and made one of the best albums in the genre. The first side is just a hit after hit and it's impossible not to move. Then on the second side, right after the title track (which is my favorite), the quality dips down a bit with the two ballads, only to get back on good track with the last three songs. So objectively, it should be a 5 - taking into consideration the album's influence and stature. But speaking from my pure enjoyment it's more of a 4. I think I prefer his later work, Thriller, Bad and even the new jack swing hits from Dangerous. Oh and I love how awkward Michael is on the cover art. Final verdict: 4.5

A great disco album that beckons you to the dance floor but also throws in other styles like pop, funk, and R&B. This is a solid production by Quincy Jones, and Jackson’s magnetic personality only compliments it. The album does slow down a bit at times when it dips into ballads but there wasn’t a rule that said it wasn’t allowed to.

This album is pure Disco and Funk. For 1979 This is taking little bit of this and little bit of that and creating something fresh around it. The Biggest thing is even with it taking from those sounds it’s written some AMAZING songs around them. “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” is a 5/5 Disco Pop Song and will always get people moving. It almost swirls around you with those strings. “Rock With You” is so smooth but literally has a chorus you could scream with passion. I’d almost like to see an Alternative Rock version of this track done by someone. This is the HIGHLIGHT of the album (6/5 ) “Off the Wall” another great track. Just makes you want to live your life and not worry about the “real world” while it’s playing. It’s a title track to make an album proud Next track “Girlfriend” is just an ok standard pop song to change mood. Getting a Kenny Rogers vibe, don’t know why. It’s not the best but I See its purpose here "She's Out Of My Life" is the soft sung Ballad. Never been huge on his songs in this vain. He eventually would sing about saving the earth and the children. Just has an icky feel associated with later tracks. The album gets back on a better pace “I Can’t Help It” which is similar to last track but Done WAY BETTER In the end this one of the best albums we have had so far on this list. As much as Michael Jackson has things said about him in later years that may damage his image , you can’t deny his musical sensibilities. His voice on this album is perfect in the mix and not over done MJ isms he would use later on.His voice is one with the instrumentals. 4.5/5

Is this a better overall album than Thriller?

First half is a masterpiece for me. Just a great infusion of disco and pop. The second half isn’t as strong but has some really good stuff. 4/5

Gear: Abyss DIANA MR (vegan) Artwork: 🕴🏻🩷🧱 Mix: 🧏‍♂️📏🤷‍♂️ Musik: 🎤❤️💥 Wertung: 👑👑👑👑(👑)/5

The dance songs are so catchy, the ballads a little creepy. Overall solid album.

I liked this album, though you can tell it's a step or two below the "quintessential Michael" that would follow after this album.

IG Pop Star. Minus one star for obvious reasons.

This was pretty good. I had heard several of these song and didn't know that they were his.

I have to separate Michael Jackson the person from Michael Jackson the artist because I do like his music for the most part, but I think he did some terrible things. Speaking strictly musically, this isn’t my favorite album from him. There are fun songs, but also a lot of filler. “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” “Off The Wall,” and “She’s Out Of My Life” are my favorite songs from the album, and while there are a few other solid ones, the rest are meh. I think he hits his stride in later albums. Still enjoyable, though.

Funky, catchy. Not enough bangers that I'd play it through repeatedly, but it's a fun listen that makes you want to move around

Muito certinho demais

Pretty good, some really iconic songs, some with unique sounds.

michi jackson isch vo vans gsponseret?? funkyy bass seehr starche ahfang, mega es summerlied?? au wenn echli repetitiv rock with you isch na cool aber gitmer chli wenig hmm es isch sehr guet aber für mich alles chli en mishmash vom.gliche? nvm d bridge vo get on the floor isch gad sehrsehr geil girlfriend het mal chli e anderi pace uu nei durudutuduru, kein fan OAAAH ABER S SAX okay mier werded nachli längsämer mit she's out of my life hans chli e noaml schnulze gfunde, aber am schluss wo sini stimm fast scho "bricht", uuuhuere schön weiss nöd, das isch min subjektive gschmack, aber ich find so albe wo nuur mit liebeslieder gfüllt sind chli redundant aber ich bin da vlt chli asi jaa am schluss hets sich chli zoge findi, aber es isch trz sehr es schöns album, wenn au für mich mengisch chli repititiv

The first half is hit after hit. The second half is such a wet fart apart from the last song. Also Jackson is a nonce

Rock with you really is a fantastic song, many groovy tracks on here and even some unexpected ballads. 4 hees/ five

Solid MJ album. Off the wall was probably my fave.

good one

Solid MJ album, some songs Ive heard and some new to me.

I feel like I’ve heard this whole album played at weddings

Motown essence! I love this period of music. Also this was the record that really launched Michael Jackson's solo career. Even though it's extremely different from any other Michael record released after this one, and not as good as them, it's still a great record that deserves recognition.

Probably one of MJs better solo albums. Right out the gate you're shaking your shoulders with good vibe dance grooves with Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough and he doesn't give you any reason to stop until the second half of the album. Rock With You, Workin' Day and Night, and Get of the Floor will keep you moving. The title track starts off a little less energetic with a cackle that I think it could do without but picks up quickly and gets you back into the boogie. Kicking off the second half, Girlfriend is a chill poppy bop of a track with a bouncy bass line, smooth harmonies and catchy melody. You'll still be bopping your head. Finally you get a sweet ballad about lost love and heartache with She's Out Of My Life. Very simple production that just servers to highlight what we've already known about MJ's vocal power (I get chills every time I her the "deeeeeeep in side" crescendo). I Can't Help It is a return to the disco dance vibes, albeit at a slower tempo that the first half of the record, but the tempo picks back up throughout It's The Falling In Love (fucking bop and a half) and closing the album with Burn This Disco Out. Certifiable classic album, a disco banger before MJ sets in stone his claim as "King of Pop" with Thriller

King of pop.

His best

Pretty good you know...

First half is 5 stars, but then it kind of falls off.

Hate the artist....not the art.

So groovy, fire bass parts, and of course, the one and only MJ

A pleasure to listen to

Shoutout Rush Hour.

Funkeh

Like the vibe of the first song, very groovy.

I didn't know the guy who did the Sonic The Hedgehog 3 OST had solo albums!?

Sure, the b-side is a little iffy, but the first five songs on this album, back to back to back to back to back... lord almighty what a way to start a record

It’s bittersweet to think about how MJ was essentially launching his adult career with this album. There was so much promise, and the disco vibe here eventually made way for even more innovative music. He seemed (and looked) so “normal” in this moment. But at this point, it’s hard to separate the music from the person we later learned him to be. But giving it my best to be objective in that regard, I give this 4.

Classic, and added She’s Out of My Life to my favorites.

3 stars for good music, bonus star for cultural impact

It’s so interesting to hear pre-thriller Michael Jackson because it’s really good but is more of just a solid addition to a genre or mix thereof—in this case disco and r&b—as opposed to the era defining height of his powers that came 3 years later. Thriller and bad are timeless opuses and this is a really solid addition to his earlier discography that has some enduring hits on it like don’t stop… and off the wall.

4 maybe 5

First things first, hilarious album cover. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough is an underrated Michael Jackson song. If Marvin Gaye's heirs got money from Pharrell and Robin Thicke for Blurred Lines being stylistically close to Got To Give It Up, Marvin Gaye could have all the money for this song. Rock With You, another great song. Workin' Day and Night sounds like it should be from a soundtrack for a Richard Pryor movie, could totally have been the song for the opening credits of The Toy. I Can't Help It sounds like something I can't place but I like it. Michael Jackson could have done straight R&B rather that pop and been great. Mac Ayres is what I Can't Help It reminds me of and I love his music.

Amazing

A very fun album, such great grooves and funky beats and obviously an excellent performance from MJ. He might have touched some kids but he can make some solid tunes. All that being said, I still am not as obsessed as others, and I personally prefer other sounds over this. Fav songs: - Rock With You - Workin Day and Night - Get on the Floor - Off the Wall

Legendary pop, good mix of slower and more upbeat

I'm a sucker for brass sections and saxophones

smooth, sensual disco, silky

This is, of course, just one of Michael Jackson’s seminal pop albums of his career. I’ve had “Thriller” already and it was, of course, a banger. This was also a banger but to a lesser degree. This is just off-peak for MJ. It’s a very strong album but I know he can and has done better than this. There’s just so much pop fun and flair here. “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” is an absolute classic opener. Sets the tone and the bar for the entire album. It’s what an opener should do and I feel like track order is sometimes overlooked these days. I’d already heard this song, as I had for a few others. But it was the ones I didn’t already know that I liked the most. “Workin’ Day and Night” and “Get on the Floor” both stood out to be as both great pop tracks and great dance tracks. The slower, more introspective stuff? Eh. I’ve never been a fan of the pop/R&B ballad and that holds true here. They’re good tracks but not for me. It takes a lot for a pop album to impress me. There’s so much crap that for a pop album to make an impression on me is saying something. Another hit for MJ, another four stars. Standout Tracks: Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough, Working Day and Night, Get on the Floor, Off the Wall, It’s the Falling In Love

Destacó burn this disco out, working day and night y get on the floor. Muy funkys y grooveras.

You wouldn’t expect Michael Jackson to make one of the best disco albums

Amazing. You can hear him reach some of the highw he will get to more consistently on Bad and Thriller

Bangers

There's flashes of brilliance but his slow songs are just dire. Same experience on Bad, which I was really excited to get (months ago) but found that outside the upbeat singles, it's a bit disappointing.

MJ da goat

Banger baby. 4/5

Funcc. 4/5

Pleasant listening experience

The first half of this album is like a pop masterclass. I don't feel the need to revisit the last half so much. 4 stars because of how massive the hits are, but if the whole thing was like the back half, might be a light 3. Can't wait til I get Thriller!

This is a really good album, some absolute belters on here, maybe tails off a little at the end. As a side note, the new film is definitely worth a watch.

I quite enjoyed it but it felt a bit disjointed. She's Out of My Life seems really shoehorned in there and really threw the album off. The rest of the album I enjoyed but don't know if I'd listen again. Honestly what was She's Out of My Life doing on this album?? It just didn't fit at all and made the album so much worse.

Obvious classic. Great consistent vibes throughout. She’s Out of My Life is a nice reprieve/change up mid way through.

It's Baby Michael, all grown up! It's a good album. Good funk and nothing too repetitive. Some all time classics and some meh.

The first half was electric. Some of the later songs were a little slow for my liking but overall a great listen.

This album rips. It peaks right away with Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, but stays good the entire time. It didn't lose my attention, and had a really nice variety of songs. Songs like Off The Wall and Girlfriend are classic MJ sounding songs, and She's Out Of My Life is a slow serenade to break it up. I've added a few songs to my list, and I'd definitely listen to the album again. 8/10

While I do prefer Michael Jackson's later endeavors that dove into more new-wavey and RnB sounds (particularly 'Thriller' and 'Bad'), I can't deny the unique charm conveyed by his early-career classic. The disco elements are effective, albeit boilerplate, but still sparkly, glamorous, and pristine. Quincy's production here is undeniable, everything from the horns to the unique percussive passages absolutely pop. And Michael provides that iconic falsetto style here. While I find his melodies, songwriting, and performances less magnificent and bold generally, they still work as complementary to the music. I mean we're talking about the king of pop here - who'd go on to release some of the greatest songs in the history of popular music. So considering that, I do admittedly find this album to be on the weaker side of his "iconic" releases (which is saying a lot). There are still some incredible songs here like the two openers, 'Get on the Floor', and the slow-burner 'She's Out of My Life'. It's still a great release, if a bit antiquated and repetitive.

could i write poetry to this? n

Great QJ production. Out of the gate strong, mellows and ends with a decent pace.

feels wrong to compare it to Thriller, but i mean... it is what it is. i did really enjoy this album. every song is super fun, and i found myself dancing in the kitchen to it and having a blast. i think that while they are all good songs, the only really GREAT one is ' Don't Stop Till You Get Enough' super solid entry, but i think that it was always be overshadowed

Great lead up to the BIG One!!!

Bästa låtarna är ofc don't stop til you get enough, rock with you och working Day and night🤩

Fett bra album, hade kunnat vara en 5:a men jag tyckte att låtarna blev lite repetitiva efter ett tag Bästa låt: Rock with you

Great MJ more infused with funk than his later work. Even though this was great I still think it’s behind his other work with some of the tracks not interesting me much. The gems of this album are up there for my favorite of his songs. Rating: 4.4

Right up there near the top of the list of musical nonces, great stuff

Elite pop action

Enjoyed this earlier MJ album. Fun to hear the disco roots on some of these songs.

Yeah I enjoyed.

So purr slay. A great time, 4.5

starts strong and great vibes throughout but gets lost sometimes/misses.

Banger. There are a couple of tunes towards the end I'm not a fan of so I can't give it a 5, but a solid 4/5!

I mean what else can I say other than I was grooving the entire time while mowing the lawn?

1. Dont stop till you get enough is a classic. Vibes are immaculate. A lot going on but just the right amount. (5/5) 2. Rock with you - another classic, the singing harmony makes the song along with the bass + the groovy feel. Nice key change. It's so good holy shit. (5/5) 3. Workin Day and Night - song carried by brass and funk feel. Chorus pretty good. nice vibes. This shaker in my right ear kind of annoying at some point it's so loud. Take a break off the shaker man. good song (4/5) 4. Get on the floor - Yeah ill get on the floor with that intro. Seems like a funk album and I love funk. Yeah solid af. Just a vibe kind of missing smth idk what (4.5/5) 5. Off the wall - weird ass laugh but okay... Yeah this is slick. Was underwhelmed for a second, but when gang comes in on "Tonighttttt" it was tight. (4.5/5) 6.Girlfriend - Slow in a bad way. Oh yeah sax solo. Chorus is okay, not super impressed but it still sounds decent. (2/5) 7. She's Out of my life - This so far feels so out of place in this album. Could be cool if this album is supposed to be like a story and this is like the break-up song after "Girlfriend". Nothing notable about this song. Melody was very meh. (1/5) 8. I can't help it - The starting melody is smooth, and I like it. Halfway through I really hope it builds up to something. :( This song could've been easy 4-5, but it just didn't do anything with the build-up. Did like the melody though. (2.5/5) 9. It's the Falling in Love - This is pretty decent so far. melody good + background. Good vibes all around nothing really notable. Just a pretty good song. (3/5) 10. Burn this disco out - almost a Stevie wonder opening lol. This song is great. Crazy vibes. Killer (4.5/5).

Definitely got my head bobbing, Another fun album but can feel a bit repetitive at times. If I could give half stars it’d be a solid 3.5 but I’ll gladly round up on this one.

Pretty faultless pop album that I enjoyed, despite not actually liking pop music.

Very fun album. Its very groovy and has a feel-good feeling on it. It is not my style i liked it. Has some funky basslines and guitars. Very cool trumpets and michael's voice is great. An absolute classic, has some bangers, but i think that the power of this album resides on the grooviness, which is maybe the reason why i didnt like girlfriend or shes out of my life.

King tackles disco Beat after beat moves my feet Plus funky breakdowns

it was alright

The one that set him up for a rocket ride into the stratosphere.

Lots of good memories here. What can you say…truly the king of pop.

Really good pop 4.4
