Un trance musical
Much more rock and much less depressing than I was expecting. Very good! As we all knew it WOULD BE.
I generally find Radiohead to be a bit dirgey - but the songs in this one are actually slight more upbeat than some of the others.
Great album that I've had a lot of experience with and have known for many years. I've kinda put Radiohead in the corner over the past couple years for personal reasons, but this album, musically, is undeniable.
High3
Thom Yorke's voice can become pretty grating after 7 or 8 songs. But I get the greatness of this album.
The awaited Radiohead breakthrough shall remain awaited. Give me 200 more albums from the generator and I think we'll get there. In the meantime: Radiohead, have you met my good friend Neil Young?
A land of contrasts, walls of sound but each brick of the wall is carefully placed, dark lyrics surrounded by twinkling instrumentals. Sure it's whiny in spots and more than a little melancholy, but it's creative and a decent listen
It's fine but don't really get into it. Expected more from radiohead. Rounding up to make it 3 stars
i have a hard time rating this album. i am not a radiohead fan, but i've listened to this album quite a lot considering. that said i dont actually like it that much. a handful of songs are very good; paranoid android, karma police, no surprises. NOT just bc they're popular no surprises was the only radiohead song i liked for a long time before it became That. but a lot of the other songs are just not that good imo or at least aren't to my music preferences. the songs are heightened by listening to them in the context of the album, but overall i think it's an album i listened to a lot for a month a few years ago that i probably won't go back to. 3.5 stars.
It was alright. I wanted to like it, since it was a little ethereal and spacey, but it was just so garbled together. I just don’t like Radiohead that much.
Loved karma police and no surprises. Appreciated that paranoid android was something special, but the thick layering of the instrumentals made the message difficult for me to parse.
evaluate later it's Radiohead
I did it. I finally completed Radiohead. Thank god. Thom Yorke sings like how I imagine a dog would sing when it's raining too much to be taken for a walk. Except the dog is a middle class art school student.
Am I crazy or is OK Computer actually kind of overrated? Airbag and Karma Police are both great, No Surprises is good too
Some good tracks but overall too whiny for me
Good vibes, but wasn't the sound I go out of my way to listen to.
I liked it more than I thought I would but I still don’t understand the reverence that Radiohead is given
Didn't like the first song. Liked the third song quite a bit. Don't love the singer's voice, but find parts of every song unexpected and interesting. This is not an album I would listen to repeatedly. Liked Let Down.
Goofy kill myself music
Kann man hören. Hatte zeitweise etwas beruhigendes.
I liked this a lot more than I expected. It still isn't really for me but I really dug Paranoid Android and all of its weirdness. What I appreciate most about Radiohead is how much influence they had on Muse who I like much better.
Definitely an album among the most overrated. Thom Yorke's voice is genuinely obnoxious and their instrumentals mostly go nowhere. I say mostly only because of Climbing Up the Walls and Electioneering, which alone bring this album up to a 6/10
One of the most overrated albums of all time. The only reason it’s considered great is because it came out at time when most pop music was trash boy bands. Really only two good songs on here and the rest are whiny British trash.
Karma Police
Not a huge fan. I can manage an average score with this one.
The song got progressively better in the album, and I loved to realize that I was listening to some of the soundtracks used in the movie “Children of Men”.
Marginally better than the last radiohead album we had, but it still doesn't get me excited. I like half the songs and no surprises in particular
Despite this only being my 54th album so far, this is the third Radiohead album I've gotten. The only song I already know from OK Computer is No Surprises, but I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what to expect from it. • Paranoid Android starts off a bit slower, but I like how it kicks in just before the 3 minute mark. • The choir synth in Exit Music reminds me a lot of one of the sounds in Metroid Zero Mission's soundtrack • I hated Fitter Happier, there's something about this exact type of text to speech that creeps me out really bad • No Surprises has never really left much of an impact on me. I can recognise that it hits its emotional beats well, but I've never sought the song out to listen to it. However, in the context of the rest of this album, it feels like a clear step above everything else I've listened to so far. I'm slightly surprised to say, this album didn't really do it for me. As I said, this is the third Radiohead album I've listened to so far, and I think I preferred both of the others to this one. There were a handful of songs (Paranoid Android, Karma Police and No Surprises) that had their merits, but the rest of the album didn't feel like it lived up to that level. Also, the more Radiohead I listen to, the more I realise that they're not my cup of tea. They're by no means bad, and I see why people like them so much, but I don't think I'll ever go out of my way to listen to Radiohead. Favourite song: No Surprises
AK
Love the atmosphere of Radiohead, it’s a vibe band, I tend to have trouble parsing the lyrics. However Thom Yorke has incredible vocal control
Dont see the hype around this.
Easy 4-5 stars if they had anyone with half decent vocals
Airbag: 6/10 Paranoid Android: 8/10 Subterranean Homesick Alien: 5/10 Exit Music (For A Film): 7.5/10 Let Down: 6/10 Karma Police: 6/10 Fitter Happier: 4/10 Electioneering: 4/10 Climbing Up The Walls: 5/10 No Surprises: 5/10 Lucky: 5.7/10 The Tourist: 5/10
At last, the most beloved album on the website. Strangely enough, it's not doing much for me It was kinda OK...
i love the british accent so that makes it much better, i prefer the slow songs in the album
I don't like Radiohead. I don't believe I've ever listened to this album start-to-finish. This album has more of the songs by Radiohead that I can tolerate at some level. That's mostly because lots of other albums by them seem to just not rock. This album has some actual jammers on it. But... Thom Yorke still sucks as a singer. The songs I can tolerate would be so much better if someone else were singing.
I've heard a few songs from this album.I think it's just not my style.I like 3 or 4 songs from it, and maybe I'll come back to them.some songs are too boring for me, without any interesting moments, just the same parts with the same music that hasn't changed.
Not as good as The Bends, not a really not a patch on Kid A. I feel, and have always felt, it is transitional and slightly overrated
This is alright. Like, they're obviously really good at what they do. The guitar on Lucky was really nice. I think they're great musicians. But it was so miserable that I wanted to slit my wrists. I'd probably not choose to hear this again, as good as the tracks are. The computer using Microsoft Sam was a bit of a throwback - we used to put song lyrics into it and make it "sing".
A mixed bag and do not really get the fuss. But Paranoid Android and Karma Police are great and might improve on repeated listens.
Another Radiohead album, another reminder that I just cannot get what other's get out of this group and their music. To be completely fair though, this album held my attention more than the other two Radiohead albums I have listened to so far (In Rainbows and Amnesiac). It feels like there's more intrigue in this album, like it's a direct window into the paranoia and maybe even dread around the technology boom of the 90s. Even the music-adjacent aspects of this album, the effects strewn throughout and the track Fitter Happier, stood out and were impactful. Still going to be tough for me to ever search this out, but best of Radiohead that I've heard so far. 3.5/5 Highlight: Subterranean Homesick Alien
Maybe it was the back to back Radiohead tracks but this one just didn’t pop
It’s seriously overrated. It’s not bad, but it’s just experiments with noise that don’t work for over half the album.
This was Radiohead on the brink of heading into electronica and leaving melody behind. I have now heard five of their six(!) albums on this list. Sadly I still have a more recent one remaining. This is a band who’s music appeals to me less as they go on.
I was really hoping to fully enjoy this but it did not really stand out to me. There were a few songs I really enjoyed like Karma Police and Exit Music, but over all it was just okay to me.
First time listening to a full Radiohead album. It´'s ok. Liked one to two musics.
Vocals still hug me but wasn't as bad in this album. Would give 2.5
vamo ver se o hype desse album faz sentido... FAVS (top 3): subterranean homesick alien, exit music (for a film), climbing up the walls mençoes honrosas: paranoid android, let down, karma police, no surprises não faz...
Not really my type
>From the UK >Creates a dystopian album Checks out
Just like all other Radiohead albums, I think I'd find my enjoyment if I was reading the lyrics along with the album. It also probably benefits greatly from multiple listens to unpack everything that goes into these albums. I'm sure I come to a certain level of appreciation for what Radiohead writes, but sonically it just isn't there for me. Even with songs like Karma Police and No Surprises being super recognizable, they just don't move the needle that much for me.
good start, it's a vibe. strong instrumentals, vocals are moody getting some religious imagery--"i'm born again" in airbag, "G-d loves all his children" in paranoid android; but it doesn't necessarily sound like positive imagery loving the style shift in exit music; oh my that took a turn ok i think the intention is not antireligious, but antiestablishment fitter happier??? 100%. unnerving computerized voice lists a bunch of expectations for a balanced life then just: "a pig. in a cage. on antibiotics." slow burn ending, nice bell to finish it off 3/5
47/1089 3.4393* It was an ok album. Karma police is one of the greatest songs in their catalog so that bumps it up a bit. I thought I'd be blown away but it was really just average, with the exception of kp. Hits...kp.
Appreciate the history, but I'm not good at hearing lyrics and only have the time to listen once. I appreciate how much this would have shaped music I do like. My wife asked me if it was Muse so I divorced her.
Heard it before. This is the only Radiohead album that is actually good, everything after this one just took a nosedive in listenability 3/5
Maintain that Radiohead are just Coldplay for pretentious people.
started off too whiny for me but got more into it as the album went on
Let Down and No Surprises are top, rest of album a bit up and down. Still think Radiohead are overrated.
Best so far and did like “No surprises” before but didn’t do a massive amount for me. Probably gets better with more listens
Ok
mid
Karma Police's one of my favourites. Enjoy the second half of the album more than the first one.
3/5 I’m pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this. Fitter Happier > Electioneering felt fresh and relevant since we are in the beginning of January.
pretty good
I've always found Radiohead beautiful and boring. They make great music, maybe it's just not for me. That being said, "No Surprises" is a classic.
I was surprised how dated this albums sounded going back to it, something I don't experience as much with my go-to Radiohead album Kid A. The musicianship really shines through in the instrumentation on this album, and particularly the restraint on thinning out the instrumentation at points. The drumming still sounds outstanding. All in, slightly disappointing, I remembered it being better.
A few really good songs with the rest being ok. I’d probably just listen the specific songs over the whole album if I were to return. 3.5/5
3.5 out of 5
actually loved it!! there are some banger on there even though i didnt think i would like it since its pretty old (no offense)
Sad
Radiohead is way overrated
This is probably one of the better Radiohead albums. At any rate, it didn't completely annoy me on this go around.
Twas cool here and there
Airbag - iets te zeikerig , prima maar niet dat ik denk banger Paranoid Android - wel nice, einde heeft iets? maar niet favorieten Subterranean Homesick Alien - dramatisch maar wel nice Exit Music - beetje van from de serie. vind deze best chill vooral t einde ofc Let Down - lovely banger Karma Police - deze vind k nice Fitter Happier - niet m’n ding Electioneering - elektrische gitaar, nice idk moet er zin n hebben Climbing up the walls - batman vibes idk No Surprises - lief verdrietig alles Lucky - nice The Tourist - slooow doowwwn gehele album - gewoon chill, we veel van hetzelfde beetje dramatisch maar wel chill
i like but not love
ok
I was way more interested in the kid A as an album not really this, and I think listening now I think I know why. There is a lot going on about alienation and a sense of not fitting in, but the songs are all roughly acoustic based. the acoustic guitar, the piano, even a lot of the singing is accapella (sp?). I don't think I was receptive to the music, and now it feels so traditionally a "band" with some wall of sound to fill in. I don't know what I'm sayig. I feel like Kid A was way more revolutionary than this album, I think depeche mode introduced sinister moods of guitar and synth better and more interesting than this, and I think Smashing Pumpkins Adore which was releases a year(?) later was more interesting with beats and technology with acoustic baking. I love Radiohead, don't get me wrong, but this feels like they were very much in process with this album.
New Gen whiny yacht rock. I want to love Radiohead but most of their music just annoys me.
Ok, toegegeven, The Tourist is een prachtig nummer. FAVO: Subterranean Homesick Alien, Karma Police, The tourist
Disappointingly mid
Interesting was not mad on the genre
not bad but idk when ill be in the mood to listen to any of these songs (i dont like sad songs) airbag is good tho
Whizzy whirry computer goes brrrr KARMA POLICE ARREST THIS MAN brrrrrrr
Don’t get the hype for them. A few good tracks, but overrated as an album and band
Paranoid Android has a really sweet spot towards the end around the 4:00 mark, favorite part of the song. Subterranean Homesick Alien is my favorite so far Not my favorite album but glad I listened - did not add to my library!
The best Radiohead album I've heard yet. They are best when Thom Yorke sounds less wailing cat. Still not in a rush to hear it again, though.
Loved a lot of that sounds on this record! Did not realize how similar in sound they were to the band Muse! Overall, I felt like it was a little ballad, heavy, and I could’ve used some more heavy hitting songs throughout the run time. So glad I finally got around to this one!
Not a Radiohead “guy”…but it’s a good listen. Pretty inventive stuff
I am definitely going to revisit again. I would say the album itself was great as a unit but not sure if any specific song stood out on first listen. Still very enjoyable.
2.5 out of 5 (if that is possible) I love Radiohead but some songs are too slow. Overall a good album.
The album is okay. I didn’t quite finish it, listened to it in the car, probably not the best time to listen to it. I’d give it a 6/10 Obviously karma police is good, also enjoyed Exit Music (for a film). Electioneering sounds like a good song, depending on your mood. Will have to give it another listen some day.
Radiohead has always been one of those bands I pretended to love because of friends who really loved them. However I am now coming out: I never cared for Radiohead. There’s nothing technically wrong with their music but I never connected with it. I like Electioneering, but apparently that’s the odd one out on this album so… It’s alright but I’ve never listened to this for myself, and I will continue not to do so.
The record company deemed this album “non commercial” and “difficult to market”. And for me, other than Paranoid Android and Karma Police, I totally get it.
Copy paste what I always say about this overrated ass band. This is the best one but its still radio head. Vocals always stink. And alot of it is whispy ethereal bullshit. It does have karma police and its one of two of thier songs I like so thats cool. The best song thats still not worthwhile but still is the best is electioneering. That song has somr getup. I'll take that. There are other songs that are also OK like paranoid android and no surprises but im not willing to give them a like to hear them ever again in my shuffle time. Kid a is i guess my favorite but this os number 2. Still only really average. Not great for sure. Screw you pitchfork or idk rate your music, whoever has a hard dick for this stuff that isnt all that good.
It’s a 3.5 and I’m rounding down because Radiohead still isn’t for me
Some classic Radiohead. A solid listen.
I haven't had a lot of Radiohead experience before this. A solid piece of work.....though I thought there would be a some more teeth to it. But after reading more about the band and its typical sound and influences, this is right on par for them. There's certainly a time and place when this album would hit the spot. For example - taking a long walk in the pouring rain as you contemplate all your poor life choices. I think there may be other Radiohead albums that would suit my ears more than this one. I'm sure this won't be the last we hear of them in this challenge. Top tracks: Airbag, Karma Police
I headbanged to Electioneering
Smarter people with better ears for music will probably rate this a 5/5 and I can understand why. But at the end of the day, despite giving it the ole college try every couple of years, this album has never done it for me. I've come to realize that Radiohead is not my kinda band but I'm still able get down with some of their other albums (The Bends, In Rainbows). I find OK Computer to be quite boring for long stretches, but I'm sure that says more about me. While I can still acknowledge how important and influential this album is for 21st century music, I'm finally saying it, once and for all: I don't like OK Computer, and that's OK!
Radiohead just doesn't do anything for me; slow, drawn-out, whiny.
Radiohead again already? Oddly I liked most of this one, musically if not lyrically; must be in my Saturday Angsty Music era. Who knew? If only Karma Police were currently out there dealing with ICE... Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): N/A ⭐⭐⭐: Liked it. Saved 2 tracks.
I'm coming in contrarian on this one. Radiohead's brand of depressive melancholy always sucked the life out of whatever enjoyment I would glean. Like I feel tired by the end of this, and maybe thats the idea. The album is definitely written and composed well, everything sounds great, its just got this dreamlike quality to it that bogs it down to me. Again, I'm sure its a positive to most but it takes me right out, nothing really grabs me.
Radiohead is a band that I have always felt I should like more, and I really really want to like, but just can't get into. The tempos are too slow for me. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5
Have been waiting for this one. I try so hard to like it and I just cant. If the beauty of this album is hidden in the lyrics I straight up cant understand them or that is not the case. I wouldnt say I am the best picker upper on good lyricism but if the music itself bores me I cant get myself to tune into the lyrics. Airbag - 6/10 Paranoid Android - 8/10 Subterranean Homesick Alien - 7/10 Exit Music - 7/10 Let Down - 8/10 Karma Police - 7/10 Fitter Happier - 4/10 Electioneering - 8/10 Climbing up the walls - 6/10 No surprises - 7/10 Lucky - 6/10 The Tourist - 7/10
So the music - rhythm, melody, is magic. but thom york's voice is so uninspired it makes it a drag to listen to, like homework.
I can appreciate what they're doing, but it's not really my style
later
Not bad just not something I would put on front to back
Quelques très bons titres un classique
Critics and fans LOVE this record. They talk about it as if it's one of the greatest records ever made. But it is so far from what I really like that I don't know if I'm being overly critical, but this doesn't rank anywhere near MY list of the greatest records ever made. I find it lacking energy and overly indulgent art-rock.
I continue to be pretty indifferent to Radiohead. They are okay, i guess? but doesn't grab me
I liked this one a lot more than Kid A which I had before on this list. Still don't get the HYPE hype that Radiohead gets, but this was better. 3.5/5
I’m a long-time Radiohead hater, but I tried to give this a full listen with an open mind. It’s better than I remember in some ways but I still can’t stand Thom Yorke’s voice and how pretentious it all is.
Boring
Not really my jam.
Good, just not quite my kind music
I really like The Cure from Faith and Pornography onwards. Seventeen Seconds is a bit bland, missing all the later tragedy, lamentation, darkness and despair and although this may have sounded like the band being on the edge, these feelings are so hard and moving.
I’m by no means a Radiohead fan, but this album I don’t mind, even if I think it’s highly overrated.
Yet another Radiohead record. They’re all good and they all have “important” tracks. I just rarely want to sit and listen to a whole record. Including this one.
I think if I took the one or two good songs on each Radiohead album, they might have made one really good album. But they made so many "meh" albums, and this one is no different.
Rolling stone top 500 - 42 I remember when this first came out I and everyone else thought it was on of the defining and best albums of the era. Hearing over 25 plus year later it does not hold help fantastically. A bit much.
The fact that this is THE album that every music nerd knows or has heard once in their life is always funny to me. Not because it doesn't make sense, it marries pretty poppy songwriting with weird additions which make the music all the more neat, also that it was such a huge success when it dropped in 1997, making Radiohead even bigger I imagine. I think what's funny about this one being THE album is just that there are so many like it in its era and since, many albums I prefer listening to more and yet this one still remains for many. I'm not gonna sit here and argue how "It's bad, actually" because its good, its got so many classic songs and one of my all time faves by them (Subterranean Homesick Alien), but I feel like I've outgrown this album and most of their music, it's hard for me to stay excited about it when I could listen to other favorites that scratch the same itch if not more, but as a full listen its still pretty enjoyable.
Better than the last Radiohead
3.5 Well, well, well, if it isn’t Mr. Computer himself. It was only a matter of time before this showed up - and what a timely appearance given its dystopian themes (though really, when doesn’t it feel dystopian in America?) But man, I am so so sick of hearing about this album. The way critics and terminally online music nerds talk about it (and Radiohead in general for that matter) would have you believe that the group invented dystopianism or whiny falsetto vocals. It’s lowkey put a damper on the way I feel about Radiohead as a whole, to the point that I’m almost annoyed now whenever I hear one of their songs played. That said, I do think this album is objectively good, I just don’t think it’s a masterpiece or even Radiohead’s best album for that matter. Across the board, I’ll certainly give credit to the ambience and production - it’s a pretty consistent, airtight package in sound, tone, and theme, and there’s really no one song I would call bad or out of place. Hell, I’d even go as far as to say the hits here are really good. Karma Police is arguably one of Radiohead’s best tracks, and I’ve always enjoyed the way it crescendos at the end especially. Similarly, No Surprises is a well-crafted, minimalist tune that manages to paint depression in such a way that feels beautiful, tranquil, and sad all at once. As for the rest of this album? A lot of good, not a lot of great. The unconventional structure of Paranoid Android is cool and all, but it’s never really grabbed me in any sort of meaningful way, nor has much of the remaining tracklist for that matter. For an album partially intended as a commentary on the state of the world, it doesn’t really feel like Thom is saying much on any particular song or offering as much insight as he would lead you to believe. He even referred to Fitter Happier as “the most upsetting thing I've ever written" and said it was "liberating" to give the words to a neutral-sounding computer voice. Like, chill, dude, you put a checklist into the Siri of 1997. Overall, this is a cool-sounding album, and admittedly one of Radiohead’s better offerings, but it’s unfortunately just as pretentious and overrated as just about everything else they have is. I can acknowledge the group is talented and has gone through an impressive musical evolution, but something about it just doesn’t quite click with me.
With a different vocal style, I'd really enjoy this. A lot of the musical structure and chord selection is my style. Mixing is a bit harsh, but not to the extent that I don't enjoy the instrumentation. I prefer the derivatives of this album. It gets a 3 since there's nothing here to go on my playlist.
Time and place issue for this album. If I had listened in 1997 with a severe nihilism about the changing world and a considerable amount of depression, this album would be an easy 5. There are still great tracks, Exit Music / Lucky / Karma Police are all at the top of said list. That being said, it is incredibly dreary and depressing. The motif of the album is prescient as ever, but layering on the same woes we feel each day makes me feel more overwhelmed than heard.
I need to spend more time with this one. It's kind of "intentionally off-kilter" which makes it a jarring listen, but... it's supposed to be like that. The last song is very good.
- Schoon op een ander. - 0 nummers toegevoegd aan MMMM
as a musician a masterwork but private i find it hard to enjoy the vocals and relate to the lyrics i agree that they are a great band and i wished i liked their music but i do see the potenzial to be one of the favorite albums of my future self
Very good
Good
Generally enjoyed it, despite it kinda being like background/score for my day. Notable standouts, IMO, were Airbag, Paranoid Android and No Surprises.
I know it's a legendary album and all but I couldn't really get into it. Too much literal noise for the sake of noise at times. Feels like it's trying to hard to be different, hip, and better than everything else with no real self awareness. Some good moments in parts though and good song writing. Liked some of the guitar work. Interesting choice of drum sound. Not sure what it is but really cant stand the song Karma Police. 2.5 but will round up to 3.
5 from 10, not my style
no se si me gustó, le voy a dar otro intento
Pretty good
I didn't really like this, but I think I wanted it to be something else. Worth a revisit
It’s a fine album, but overrated. I respect their willingness to experiment, but I greatly prefer The Bends.
Standouts Karma Police Electioneering
J - 3/5 Best Track - "Karma Police"
I don't think I'll ever revisit this, it isn't really my thing but it was an OK listen.
Awesome album one of the best of all time. 7.8/10
I recently reviewed The Bends. I like that one a lot better. Actually OK Computer is great, but it overstays its welcome in my opinion. I get tired of Yorke’s voice, but I do enjoy the soundscapes.
cool concept album - not exactly my speed.
I know it's a modern classic and I admire the techniques and the songwriting but it doesn't really float my boat.
I was only able to listen it once but It was OK. It's not my favourite music but it's not bad.
I’d stop just short of calling this greatness. There’s some good things going for this album though! I’d imagine in 1997 this sounded like the fucking future. There’s a lot of tactful instrumentation choices, as well as a very clear atmosphere this album sonically exists in. It just lacks a bit of punch and/or ability to hold my attention, personally. That Apple automated talking voice is such a cool choice on “Fitter Happier”. On the other hand, songs like “Climbing Up The Walls” weren’t as easy on the ears as I’d hoped. I don’t take issue with Thom Yorkes voice being overtly whiny or impossible to listen to, but it wasn’t great on this song. “In Rainbows” was the Radiohead album that clicked for me, I had no such click with this one. 3/5
It’s fine, seriously what is all the fuss about Radiohead
reminded me so much of MCR! Surprised me because i’ve only heard creep before. You can hear how influential they have been to bands that came after. I listened to it in the car and was like man i cant understand a single word. Let me listen with headphones when i get home. That didn’t help at all and had to read the lyrics for every song regardless, which sadly reminds me of indie rock. I think the abstract lyrics work for some songs but others it makes them sound unfocused. The only songs i’d listen to again are climbing up the walls, no surprises and lucky. I did like the instrumentals for each song though. 6.5/10
Good but the second half just slowly drags
Dreamy, melancholy…and boring. 3
This is the Album everyone loves. I never got into it. “The Bends” is my favorite Radiohead album. Starting at the beginning with “Airbag”, this might be the listen that sways me. I still don’t like “paranoid android”. “Subterranean homesick alien” has potential. That was enjoyable. I’m digging “exit music(for a film)” as well. Exit music is really good. I love the build and the vocals against the fuzz bass tones. I’m glad I’m listening to this record again. “Let down” is a great song. I think I’m just not a fan of the singles from this record. Like “Karma Police” I never got the hype. Up to “Karma police” now. Just the chord progression turns me off. Skipping this one. “Fitter happier” was a clever piece. Would not seek out as a jam, but I like what they did there. “Electioneering” starts off with a great intro riff. Digging the vibe of this. Radiohead are a great band. The sound scape on climbing up the walls is next level. I love whatever instrument starts “no surprises”. Still not my favorite Radiohead album but there are a lot good moments on this record.
I mean...I don't rate it as high as most people do. Just not to my taste 6/10
I don't get the hype around this album. It's not bad, but like Radiohead, I think this album is overrated.
***An ok album
sounds ok
Still a band that I don’t really understand all the love for. Doesn’t help that I really don’t like Thom Yorke’s vocals. This one at least has familiarity on its side because everyone was playing it when it came out.
I can see why this is so influential. Still didn't capture me much.
I liked a couple songs but def not my fav Radiohead album
Oooook???? The best album in the world ever according to virgins worldwide. If you have not felt the warm embrace of another person, this album is your life. I kid. As a man with particularly eccentric interests myself (god that sounds like I collect taxidermied humans or something), I understand being an obsessive weirdo. I hope to understand the hype as I enter the thrilling world of Y2K era computer-based art. I have firmly affixed my hacker eye piece and I am ready to say “OK computer, show me some beefed up hogs wrestling over a big tire in a field.” Airbag - Am I getting U2 from this? Why am I asking? I am. It’s “creep”ing into my head. I can’t escape them. The music itself is very innovative here though. Somehow rocking extremely hard underneath vocals I’m not enjoying at all. Paranoid Android - Wait a second, androids can’t feel emotions. Explain yourself. Oh yeah. Way fewer U2 feelings here. Hellacious riff about halfway through and a continuation of the very interesting musical experimentation that permeated the first track. Whether Android, iPhone, or rocking back and forth in a damp cellar trying to come down off of dopamine addiction, I think we can all get along under the banner of the android. Subterranean Homesick Alien - Bob Dylan reference on a Radiohead song? Holy sweet hell. This probably caused literal shockwaves in whatever community I haven’t poked fun at yet. Warhammer 40k players? Backgammon associate masters? Who cares. Exit Music (For a Film) - Thanks for spelling it out, Thommy. Is it Thom? I think so. This is a fantastic song. Moody, dark, and even a little heavy in places. I was going to make dumb jokes about the fact that they really jammed “for a film” in there, but this song kind of just took the wind out of my bad joke writing. How dare you. Let Down - This may be the greatest gambit ever pulled. Call the bad song on your record Let Down. Genius. 10 star salute to my bois in the band. Karma Police - A song that has been firmly planted in my A(u)(r)tistic playlist for a long time. It’s a beautiful song. So Fitter Happier - No more bad stuff. Stephen Hawking slayed this feature. Years ahead of the trend of putting dumb celebrities in dumber songs. Disclaimer: I am not proud of the Stephen Hawking “joke.” It is the laziest, garbage-iest, meme-iest type of humour that there is, and it should’ve stayed in 2002. But if I said, “is this the same guy that does “Jennifer,” the opening track on “Prowler in the Yard.””Would you have ANY idea what I’m talking about? Oh who cares. I could write a detailed terrorist plot in here and nobody would read it. Cool track. Electioneering - They seem to do a bad song, followed by a great song, followed by a bad song. Perhaps that is another concept that’s wafting above my admittedly stunted head. My actual head is HUGE, but the brain inside doesn’t quite live up to its gigantic casing. It’s like a AA battery trying to power a small city. This song does continue the trend. Climbing Up the Walls - The pattern continues. This song is interesting and grabbed me from the start. I even like the song title. Anxiety in a musical format. Gotta be the best genre goin’. No Surprises - None? I had a whole 30th anniversary planned for May 28, 2027. Do you think it’s cheap to rent out the Bridgewater Legion Hall?? You know what? I’m starting to think you guys don’t even want to come hang out with me in Nova Scotia in two years. I know that can’t be it, so what’s wrong? Cold shoulder. Listen. This song is not as good as the previous one, but it’s alright. Trend sort of broken. Now will you visit?? I bought streamers. Lucky - L-U-C-K-Y somethin’ somethin’ pussy on fire. When will we be reviewing RuPaul music? I assume she’s got 6 or 7 albums on here. While we wait for that fabulous day, I am still in the midst of this technology opus. There really hasn’t been any computer talk. I’m crushed. This is fine. The Tourist - The enemy of all angry hippies worldwide. Somebody cares about my city? I HATE THEM SO MUCH. It’s their fault prices are going up, and not the evil opportunistic monsters that created and thrive in the cesspool that they have ensnared us in. Yeah this song is real depressing. I think that’s the aim. Kind of a snooze for me, as I’m not really feeling that particular way right now. I suppose that’s a good thing. This is obviously a meticulously crafted record. I typically feel one of two ways when I come to review the “big critical success” albums. I am usually excited, but I can also be overwhelmed by the volume of opinions and I can sometimes feel like an alien. Of this is your favourite album, good for you. I think it’s a fine choice. You can tell it is musically capable, and Radiohead did a lot of supremely interesting things with the rock genre here. They wrote beautiful melodies, hard-driving riffs, and crafted some excellent soundscapes. They also produced some extensive boredom. It’s not because I’m some dolt that needs to be thrilled with each and every note, but certainly on a first pass, there were stretches where k thought there was too much air, or where the vocals veered into obnoxious and whiny tones. When you meld these two critiques, you’re left with a good album. One that I will revisit, but nothing that changed my life. Accessing mainframe. I’m in. 3.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Paranoid Android, Exit Music (For a Film), Karma Police, Fitter Happier, Climbing Up the Walls
A good album start to finish. It's a bit self indulgent. Wasn't a fan of their music when it came out but after hearing it in a Father Ted episode I grew to enjoy some of it
Massively overrated album.
7- very scary 8- my favorite
That's not my taste in music - But ok
I hated this album when it first came out, but after hearing my brother playing it a lot, I started coming round to it a bit more. After 28 years, I like it marginally more than I don’t like it. Sonically odd with lots of layering and screaming guitars; TY doing his weird wailing; and words that seem to have been chosen for their sound rather than their meaning, it’s quite good. Radiohead have never been shy about experimenting, and they have really gone experimental in this. There are loads of weird sounds on this, but it’s a bit overloaded with sound. The tracks start well, mostly, and some are decent, but they descend into noise which I don’t like. I think these dips into sonic experimentation are to disguise the fact that this album isn’t half as good as they think it is.
Pretty decent but still to sad for me to come back to.
Not my favorite from Radiohead, but it gets a 3 stars for some of the tracks like Paranoid Android.
it’s a perfect album but something permanent needs to happen to thom yorke so we will compromise at a 3
Kinda good, kinda whatever Wish I could give 2.5s so this 3 wouldn't be rated the same as all my 2.5s
Pretty meh honestly. 3/5
Didn't love the sound but was more pleasant than I thought it would be
Radiohead is one of those bands I feel that I should like more than I do. *The Bends is super. These guys are immense songwriters and I truly appreciate the musicianship, but never feel a need to put them on. Cerebral and depressing is how it comes off for me. Medicating in a post surgery, opioid kind of way. Dragged under while still floating on a cloud. There but not there. Is this a positive review, or a negative one? Too out there to tell.
I liked the concept of the album. I really enjoyed what felt like a seamless blends of genres in this album. My favorite (besides Karma Police, because duh) was Exit Music (For A Film); I found it more melodic than some of the other songs. This was not my favorite listen from Radiohead, but I get it and I get why it’s so revered and influential. I enjoyed this. Probably won’t revisit. I do not need to own on this on vinyl. (Why does Thom Yorke get to have whiny, nasally, sub-par, pitchy vocals but Taylor Swift can’t?)
Whiny. Was not impressed.
Boring and dull. I am not a Radiohead fan, but this album was a low average ok
Would have loved this if it caught me at the right age. First time listen but it’s probably going to have a few more listens to full appreciate it. A scorching day isn’t the right conditions, a gloomier night will be more appropriate.
Pure joie de vivre
Well, this album took me right back to high school. Technically competent, but I’ve definitely grown out of the whiny teenager melodies of Thom Yorke. Man needs a punch in the face, he does.
Rounded up to 3 for these wankers, but it's a lot of incoherent moaning if we are honest.
heavy. 3. Like a sadder adele. Karma police is almost worth an extra star by itself, i love that song.
I’ve never listened to this album but have heard enough praise for it to know there is something there. I do think there’s a lot of meat on these bones that would be rewarded by multiple listens. I’ve heard a lot of Radiohead songs that I like, but I’ve never gotten hooked enough to really dive in. Glad I listened to this.
it's ok. I will say I expected a lil more from an album so lauded. Probably just my taste. A little too consistently slow and melancholy
whatever.
3.5
Driving and watching landscapes pass, dissolving into each other. The slow rise of mountains, the hazy distance of the road in desert, the lights of the gas station at night in the middle of the plains. Not doing well, but no one else is on the road, so that's okay.
I forgot how whiny and self indulgent they are. At least it wasnt boring.
I can respect the achievement of this album. The sounds are fully unique and inventive. I just don’t care for the pace or sound of Thom Yorke’s voice. Ultimately a DNF due to my own tastes but I will likely revisit throughout my life.
A lot softer than I was expecting from Radiohead. Idk if I’ve heard a lot of their music before. It was a high 2 low 3.
giving this one a fair shake for the first time in years, always been resistant. i like it more than i did when i was younger, but overall it’s still not really my wheelhouse. lots of great production ideas and musical concepts, the craftsmanship is really really impressive. i feel like there are long stretches of the vibe being very languid and drawn out, and sometimes they pay off but sometimes they don’t. it’s good but it’s exhausting. a lot of the album’s runtime kinda feels like homework to me, ultimately i wasn’t really feeling very many feels.
Only familiar with the radio hits, so pleasantly surprised but the album.
I liked Bends better than this one. It would be a 3.5 for me, so rounding down. Songs sounded pretty similar throughout, not bad just not great.
I enjoy their sound & all of its messy distortion. but it is about 20 minutes too long. think about 35 minutes of brooding lyrics is about it for me. 3.5 because of that.
I can appreciate this record for its impressive production quality, relatively novel music, and interesting lyrical themes. It’s really well done, and there’s no technical faults to be found anywhere within. I appreciate Thom Yorke’s singing as well, it’s a very unique style. Unfortunately I just don’t vibe with this record, I found myself bored quite often while listening to it. “Exit Music (For a Film)” is a really exceptional track that I’ve always really liked, it’s as emotionally powerful as it is beautiful, really the best thing to come from this album by far. I want to give this album 3.5*, but rounding to a four just feels incorrect based on how I found myself feeling while listening to it. Let’s call it 3.49 and round down.
Repeat listen
This is the point they discovered they could climb up their own collective arse, so they did. A couple of songs I like but most of them I can take or (more likely) leave.
I always want to like Radiohead but, truthfully, I always end up bored
A few very very good songs that I wasn’t really aware of being by Radiohead pleasantly surprised overall a solid 3 close to 4 nearly.
greatest album ever made 3/5
Never really listened to Radiohead before. Certainly not my favorite album ever, some of the really out there parts can be hard to listen to but tracks like Let Down and Electioneering were highlights for me
Surprisingly dull in hindsight
I really don't get all of the critical love for this band. This album is fine and I have no objection to putting it on this list, but Apple including it in the 100 Greatest Albums of all time is a bridge too far. Just too esoteric for me.
Ok
Never liked this album as much as it has been hyped
The album is not bad for a depressed mood, there are some pretty melodic things. Naturally, you won't listen to him in any mood. 6.5 out of 10.
Replace the singer and this would be pretty good. At least they restrain him somewhat on this one
I preferred The Bends but some of the individual songs are great
I like a lot of things about this album... but I'm just not a big fan of Thom York's singing. I feel that I could listen through this dozens of times and always find something new to appreciate - a different version of myself would be incredibly into this album, but if I'm going to be honest with myself I probably wont be back. I will say this album is very ahead of it's time. Nothing here sounds 1997.
Not as musically groundbreaking as I expected. Well produced, but the innovation is left to the lyrics and (to an extent) the delivery style. 7/10
Okay I guess. Seemed like it would be great music to fall asleep to, and I don't mean that in the "it was boring" way, it just had that falling asleep vibe to it.
Here's the thing. I like Radiohead now. They won me over with the albums of theirs I've already listened to, and I have heard a lot about this one in particular. But... while it's definitely interesting, lyrically at least, and well-made, I just... didn't find much here for me. Okay, I listened to it about three times but that's because it can just keep going in the background. Pleasing enough but when I tried to give it the attention it apparently warrants, I just found it dreary, musically. Just the way I am but I need something chonkier to get hold of. If this had been the first Radiohead album I was given, I would have totally written it off and roasted them so hard for surr
Maybe could have used a couple more tracks that quickened the pace a bit, but I liked this
This is the sixth Radiohead album I've been served up on this list, and I can't for the life of me work out why that is. None of them have been bad and I made it all the way through each and every one of them. A few of them had some good tracks, and this one is no different as 'No Surprises' has always been hauntingly beautiful. However, I am yet to come across an album that I felt was better than 'meh, I didn't feel the need to turn it off'. Hopefully , this the final album of theirs that I get (confession, I had a look at their discography and I may be in luck in that regard)!
I don’t love this as much as the rest of the world seems to. But it’s ok.
Some ok songs someone give this guy singing lessons
I'm going to put aside my bias against the idea of Radiohead for this listen. Seriously. I will try. I'll try to ignore decades of critics telling me that every Radiohead album is the greatest thing ever made. I'm not even going to acknowledge the fact that a Thom Yorke fart sounds record would get 5 stars in Rolling Stone. I will NOT think about how skinny white British guys making grumpy faces were the basis of cool for much of my young life. For real. I kind of loved listening to this record. I tried it all the way through many times long ago, and never bought in. But for some reason, now it clicks. I dig the unconventional song structures and instrumentation. Thom’s voice is annoying sometimes, but I’m getting over that. The singles are badass and often find their way onto my playlists, but the other tunes also have moments of rock song perfection, even if they ramble a bit. I could do with about 50% less feedback. I know it was edgy at the time, but sheesh. Anyway, I “got it” enough to really enjoy listening today. I’ll be back for more and I wouldn’t be surprised if my personal rating climbs the more I let it sink in.
Good album but the songs started sounding the same after a while
I disliked this less than some other Radiohead albums, even liked some of it, but I still don’t understand how people listen to Thom York sing and love it so much. It’s just so whiney
Love Karma Police! Honestly, not too impressed with the rest of the album though. 3/5
It was ok, wouldn’t be in a rush to listen to the whole album again though
Actually enjoyed it a lot, made banana bread
Rating this a 3 because although the lyrics are great, I couldn’t understand them or hear them while I listened to it in the car. Some songs are good and nice to listen and engage with, but had it not been for a second listen I would rated a 2.
Its not my fave
This might be sacrilege to some, but I don't really understand the Radiohead hype. Even when I was in high school, which is supposed to be peak whiny, annoying, angst time, or the time you should most like Radiohead, I've just never loved them. They're good don't get me wrong but time and time again I see people rate them as one of if not the greatest bands of all time and it just never clicked for me. This is probably the 5th of 6th time listening to this album so it's not like I don't give them a fair shake. Whatever. 6/10
Yeah man we get it you’re a sad white boy without a sense of place in the world.
Altough a step up from the bends, OK computer still leaves quite a bit to be desired. I don't think the theme has been excuted to its best, although the concept of the record is excellent, which gives tracks like paranoid android which is just laughably bad and other tracks, which, ironically, people tend not to listen, that are great. So theres a certain level of unbalance in the record and the flow is thus broken. Overall a step up from the bends and much more listenable as a whole and a great theme. Favorite track: subterranean homesick alien. Overal score: 6.3/10
Aware this is highly rated, listened a couple times in the past but not got in to it. Still enjoyable but didn’t feel special
Never listened to Radiohead that much, they always seemd kind of dull and boring. I listened to this album a couple of times today and I think this band definitely deserves a deeper dive in the future, considering their cult status. For now, this was not bad, but also not too good for me. I get the songwriting, but it's a bit bland sonically at times.
As much as I love Radiohead in general, and how important this record was to me as a teenager first getting into music, I now find the experimentation of it more frustrating than exciting, and can’t help but think of it as a stepping stone between two more exciting albums.
Twilight
Bit going on, liked the album, just weird- very Radiohead-esque not their best imo.. strong 6.5
First half was really, really good. Second half lagged.
Obviously some excellent songs here but geez a lot of this album is boring
I try really hard to like Radiohead, but I just don’t get it. Maybe I’m in the minority.
I remember back when this was released and everyone was raving about it. I wasn't a fan of the first single released but I went and bought the cd to see what all the hype was about. I listened to it and wasn't impressed. I kept listening to it but it just didn't grow on me. Eventually I got rid of that cd and moved on. Listening again after all these years, it's not as bad as I remember. Having listened to other Radiohead releases for this project I can say it's not their worst album. I still don't get the hype though.
so, i really wanted to like this album. i feel like normally i try to check any bias at the door, but i was truly excited for this one and waited until i could sit down, fully engage/listen and even have the lyrics up as i listened to the album. and for the life of me... i just didn't get it. i read a bit of the wikipedia page about this album and it still didn't stick. I'm going to give it a three on sound alone (Karma Police, Electioneering being the highlights), but I can't help but feel this just went over my head. I think my next step is to listen to the Dissect season that breaks down this album. If it's worth a season on Dissect, it probably means that I am missing a ton and have a lot to learn about it. Sorry Radiohead, but this gets a three until I learn more.
For some reason back in high school I was obsessed with no surprises, especially after seeing the music video with the guys helmet slowly filling up with water as he’s singing. I felt so edgy and musically liberated. So I was going into this album expecting to like it a lot but idk why it just really didn’t hit for me (especially with how many comparisons with Coldplay they get).
I know this is an all-time album for a lot of people, so I was surprised that it wasn’t at least drawing me in when I listened to it. I re-listened to the first half of the album, and I was starting to see the appeal, but I also started to see why people rag on Thom Yorke quite a bit. I don’t think it’s a bad album, it’s just not as good as The Bends for me, and I probably need more time for it to grow on me.
Radiohead is a major blind spot in my musical knowledge. I've always heard that OK Computer is one of the best albums of all time, and I've been looking forward to listening to it since this list started. After a finally giving it a full listen, I think this might be one of the most overrated albums of all time. That's not to say it's bad, I just don't think it's as good as everyone says. Thom York's voice has a monotone droning to it that i guess defines the albums sound, but for me just puts an annoying blanket across the entire album. There are some big songs on here, but none of them are fun. The whole album has a melancholy sound which isn't bad. It's just hard to get exited for it. I don't know. Maybe I just need to give it another listen, but right now I'm thinking a high 3 low 4.
I still don’t like Radiohead. But I’m getting used to them being constantly around.
I think i've managed to like radio head less by listening to them more
OK (computer)
Definitely not the album to listen to if you’re really trying to lift your mood. It reflects its genre 100% and is the epitome of its time.
Aint okay computer
Different, kind of melancholy, kind of crying singing.
Radiohead. I am getting used to this band. Some good tunes. I like the creativity of some of the songs.
Pretty nice album, enjoyed a couple of the songs, one even sounded familiar (No Surprises) and the Exit Music one was very intense but not in a bad way. Overall, pretty alright stuff.
I know I’m supposed to like this more…I don’t though
some good some eh
fine 3/5
Not good, not bad.
Not one of their better albums but okay.
As beloved as they are by the public, I cannot get into Radiohead without really needing to be in the right mood. This album has some definite highlights but it’s nothing I will be playing on repeat.
Some great songs... But it goes on a bit
I mean, it's good, but it doesn't speak to me the way it seems to for other people.
Really enjoyable
It's a high three-star album, because I liked it more than Amnesiac, which is a low-three star, but it's a three-star nonetheless. I'd listen to it again, but wouldn't actually seek to do so.
Went down easier than it did when current, but still don't see what the fuss is about with this one.
It’s a good album. I like it but I don’t believe to be deserving of the masterpiece label it seems to have.
I was never that much into Radiohead. I can’t say this changed that, but I liked it.
I overall like it better than The Bends. But enough Radiohead already!!
OK Computer is a good album https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-ok-computer-by-radiohead?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
No catchy lyrics, but interesting music. Paranoid android is through composed.
Not overly upbeat, so I have to be in just the right mood for this.
Most Radiohead songs sound like a montage in an early 2000’s teen drama. And I love One Tree Hill so I guess that means I love this album???
Better than other Radiohead releases, but it still doesn't quite get me over the hump. Too much atmosphere, not enough substance. The lyrics come in and out much like the instrumentation. I need it a little.more lucid and solid for my tastes.
Not a fan at all. I know this album is widely regarded as a masterpiece, but it just does not connect with me. The overall tone feels overly bleak and, vocally, it leans into a style that I struggle with. After a few tracks, everything starts to blur together and I find it hard to stay engaged. I can hear the ambition and the atmosphere they are aiming for, and I respect how influential the record has been, but for me it feels cold rather than moving. Personally, I have always found Radiohead to be a little overrated compared to some of their contemporaries. Favourite track: None that truly stood out for me Least favourite: The overall sound feels repetitive Album artwork: Distinctive and instantly recognisable, even if the music does not land for me
Oddly enough I actually don't really like radiohead. I dunno sue me
I'm not a huge Radiohead fan, but I'll try it a few more times.
Meme'd but legit
Decent album, weird ror vibes
Meh
love radiohead
A much more enjoyable listen than Kid A. It seems he forgot how to sing on that album but shows he is quite capable of holding notes and singing with emotion. Still not my favorite singer by a long shot but I don’t actively hate this album. My biggest complaint is a general overuse of effects. I felt it was egregious on Kid A and only slightly annoying on OK Computer. Step away from the effects board!
I've given this a decent couple of listens and I like it! Not a lot, but I like it.
This was an OK Album. Much of it sank into the background for me but was pleasant enough I listened to it through several times, but also little really stood out to me. I two tracks I loved though and think are individually 5 stars are Climbing Up the Walls and Meeting in the Aisle.
It's been a regular visitor to my ears. It's not blessed my ears, it's not offended them either. Entirely satisfactory album. Not quite 4 stars.
didn't grab me, not a fan of the vocals
After Karma Police, I was into it
I feel like I was supposed to like this way more than I did
