a lot of unnecessary guitar solos. nothing particularly memorable. just very generic dad rock. i think hush is the only song i actually like by them and it's not on this album. not nearly as painful as the aerosmith album i had the other day though. i can listen to the whole album without having to skip, which has to count for something.

Probably in the top 50 most influential albums of all time. 50 years later, it's just tired and boring dad rock. Also Smoke on the Water isn't good.

Goodness me, this is tedious! Speaking as a dad, could you stop calling this "dad rock" please? This music now sounds so Jurassic that it should be called "grandad rock" instead. Honestly, if any child of mine ever bought me a "dad rock" CD for Father's Day (featuring such toe-curling drivetime "classics" as Smoke On The Water), I would immediately disown them *angryface*

I don’t like rock music all that much so the sound just wasn’t for me. It’s more beat-heavy more than melody so I ended up just skipping through the songs in a few minutes. I didn’t pay attention to the lyrics so I have nothing to say about them.

Immediately, this record is highly irritating. Thoroughly adolescent. Don't think I had fully appreciated how dumb the lyrics to Smoke On The Water are. Every solo is either stupid or boring. Main riff of Space Truckin' is pretty great, though. Pre-teen me thought this record was cool. 40-something me understands that it is totally lame.

Marginally better than AC/DC and AM but only marginally so, this achieved third bottom so far because one can’t help nodding along to the opening of SOTW…

We all know exactly one deep purple song, and honestly I'd forgotten it was them. As soon as "Smoke on the Water" came on I went "oh yeah, I DO know a Deep Purple song". At this point I don't even think most people have listened to the whole song, we all just know the riff because it's so ubiquitous - which itself only happened because it's so simple that everyone who has ever learned beginner guitar has learned to play it awkwardly. It is my belief that this album was included on this list entirely because of that one riff, and the riff is not even that good.

Kinda insane how I could sing along to every single note of Highway Star thanks to Rock Band. Oh yeah, I hated this.

One of the greatest lps of all time? 7 tracks padded out by unnecessarily soloing. Could have been an ep or 12” single. Surely there are better albums by this band? It’s got Gillan, Lord, Glover, Paige FFS. Lyrically, half arsed. The best song Highway Star is about going to a gig. Smoke on the Water about waiting to record this album. Highway Star is pretty good especially Gillan vocals, even Ritchie’s urgent solo contributes to the prosody for once. Smoke has that killer riff. Space Truckin is fun. Lord’s keyboards in Lazy are cool - loop part for two minutes and you’d have a good 4 track ep. 1.5 stars don’t know which way to jump. It’s not as bad as Private Dancer but it’s not as good as any of the two star LPs.

Boring Home Depot core. I’m sure someone out there will enjoy this album but it’s a no for me. I think they have better style than other artists of this same genre, but it’s not enough to carry any weight. All the songs sound the same and have that similar divorced dad rock.

Guitar Hero. "Smoke on the water" la he apreciado mas despues de haber leido lo que dice el articulo de la wikipedia que adjuntan en la app donde se generan los discos. Pero por lo demas no es un genero con el que haya conectado nunca y no lo disfruto, siento la parte de la voz muy repetiva dentro de una misma cancion, realmente lo que se puede destsascar es la parte instrumental. A pesar de esto "Lazy" me ha sorprendido un poco gratamente, sobretodo por la armonica pero preferiria que no hubieran cantado en la cancion. Se me ha hecho pesado escuchar canciones largar de un genero que no me ha gustado nunca. No creo que sea una mierda pero no es lo mio.

Yeah, I think I’m mostly good on listening to anything that can be classified as classic hard organ rock at this point.

This was very much 'my era'. However I was only pretending to like them back then to fit in with all my mates. Now I don't have to fit in, so I allow myself to say, I just don't like the music. Having said that, I could listen to 'Deep Purple in Rock' again, just for old times sake... or maybe lift and drop the needle just to remember the tunes.

“Smoke on the Water” still kicks ass, but it doesn’t seem I was missing much of Deep Purple otherwise. Pretty much sounds exactly how you imagine all early 70s “metal” bands from England must have sounded. Which is very deeply not for me. Favorite track: “Smoke on the Water”

At least it wasn't long... and yet, still too long... But hey, there's that famous guitar riff - which is, I suppose, why this album hasn't been otherwise forgotten by the human conscious.

It's a shame we can't run the electric grid on tedious 70s rock since it since it seems there are bottomless wells of the stuff.

A terrible album in an otherwise great year for music. Outside of Smoke on the Water, not much to listen to on this one. Space Truckin' is perhaps the next best song on the LP. Although A Blind Man Cries had potential, the lyrics were ridiculous, pandering to the lowest level for an attempt at a blues song. By today's standards, they're not very good musicians. The LP mainly consists of overly repetitive guitar chords, weak guitar solos, rough drum beats, and rough bass lines. This is not what I would consider a classic album.

If you’re into 70’s rock, it’s worth a listen. I liked a few of these songs when I was 12 or so but don’t listen to this type of rock now. The story behind “Smoke on the Water” is sort of funny, so look it up. I’m rating this low (2 stars) not because the music isn’t good, it’s just because it’s not something I’d recommend in 2025.

It's hard to belive that this album wasn't trite and boring even when it came out. Every song here seems formulaic and unexciting. It's also hard to believe that 'Smoke on the Water' isn't about smoking from a bong. "Deep like the purple smoke on the water song. Taking hits from the bong" -State of Corruption (circa 1998)

Getting bored by the constant basic rock by numbers from the 1970s so popular in this list.

Deep Purple has never really been my jam... Highway Star was unlistenable for me. Pictures of Home was the best Smoke on the Water everyone knows I hope the other 1,000 albums are better :)

Moet toegeven dat die Ritchie Blackmore wel epische dingen doet met z'n gitaar, maar de context waarin hij dit doet staat me totaal niet aan. De nummers gaan nergens heen ondanks hun behoorlijke lengte, enige vorm van sfeer is absent (zoals die in het zijproject van Ritchie, 'Rainbow', wel duidelijk aanwezig is), en de thematiek vliegt volledig over m'n hoofd. Het is weer van die hos-rock a la AC/DC, ben daar nu wel even klaar mee. Elk nummer wordt nog enigszins boven water gehouden door het snelle gitaarwerk.. nja eigenlijk niet, het album verdrinkt vrij snel in z'n monotonie, en alles wat achterblijft is een laagje rook boven het oppervlak. 5/10 Highlights: meh

Velho rockzão ruim dos anos 70. A década de transição onde o cantor era lírico e estridente, a guitarra tentava ser pesada, mas era uma sanfona, e a batera era as panela da vó. Ainda bem que evoluiu nos anos 80. Dos anos 70 das poucas que salvam é black sabbath e um pouco de Led Zeppelin. Mas esse deep purple tem que ficar deep in hell pq é ruim viu....

Maybe I wasn’t in the mood for this one, but I didn’t like it. It doesn’t stand out next to the great albums of this era - sure, smoke on the water is fun to listen to, but that was about it for me.

Deep Purple is one of the pioneering heavy metal and classic rock bands of their time. With that being said, I hated it.
