Reviews (page 13 of 14)
I wrote in a review of their first album that there’s a kind of goody absurdity that enters hard rock the more “hard” it became in 1970 and Machine Head sees no sign of that letting up. Big signature single aside, this one’s more of the same 12-bar format and outsized vocal delivery, but the whole package comes together in Space Truckin’ a barely serious ode to space trucking.
not bad but nothing stood out
Fine if you're forced to listen to it but I'd never put this on intentionally. Felt mindlessly long and droned on an on. We get it dudes. 4/10
who doesn't love Smoke on the Water. The rest was pretty good too
Smoke on the water in my mind for days but otherwise no bueno
Most of the guitar solos are excessive and songs drag on but definitely hear their influence in modern music. Not an album I would go out of my way to listen to.
It was a fine album for a genre I’m not in to. I can see how people like this if they enjoy a hard rock sound.
Another flat Deep Purple album. Despite loving Led Zeppelin and Rolling Stones, I just can't get behind Deep Purple. I think what makes Led Zeppelin stand out is the quality of the vocals. Every member of that band could get everything out of their instrument. Rolling Stones is just SO pop, they knew how to keep a song to the right length. Deep Purple... not so much. They rely more on catchy riffs and repetition rather than skill. Not a bad album, I just struggle to understand what I don't like about it. Spiteful 2 stars, skipped the 2nd half of too many songs and just didn't want to listen anymore by the end - More rock :( not in the mood. At least it's a short album - Okay I'm warming up. Clearly willing to take a step in another direction from their last album I listened to - Strong riffs, annoying rock.
Smoke on the water natürlich gut, aber der Rest des Albums holt mich nicht ab.
Bluesy hard rock really isn’t my thing. Cool keys though.
Yaaaaawn dual guitar solos cool. Grooves are cool. My god there is so much music like this. Punk needed to happen to free us from the scourge of blues rock, not prog. Ugh bass solo. Had no idea that smoke on the water was about being one of the biggest nerds at a party. More needles noodling!!!! Space truckin is fun n silly. They probably had really cool record collections. It’s one of those things where the sum of its parts adds up to a whole that makes me feel nothing.
SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOKE ON THE WAAAAAAATER
2.5 stars Some nice jams but generally run of the mill rock n roll. I could have died without listening to it.
Meh
Not sure what the appeal is with this one
Not totally my jam.
Bit too dad rock for me
Heard Smoke on the Water before, obviously. Not gonna lie, it wasn't the most groundbreaking album ever but it was just ok 2/5
when is there gonna be a hip hop album bruh... idk sh was pre calm idk kinda messed w but no where near as good as marvin.... torn up between 2 and 3 rn... 3 too close to 4 which is what i rated marv... and marv was lit.... i think.... i might have to go with... 2 bruh. 2 be like: boi. diddenbludden ahh
Very standard and by the numbers 70 rock. Highlight was the heavenly intro to track 2 (which lasted about 1.5 seconds until i realised Location Playboi Cart was accidentally queued). Towards the end of the 8 song tracklist i even began thinking of what to listen to next. A 1 is too harsh because i sat through it all and didnt want to turn it off.
It's like heavy maaaan, but it's not my scene, I don't even like Smoke On The Water, there I said it 😕
Ich weiß nicht. Das Riff aus Smoke on the Water ist gut, aber ich konnte nie mit dem Rest des Songs warmwerden. Mit dem Rest des Album auch nicht. Schade.
Why are there so many Deep Purple albums on this stupid list!?
Kind of boring but ok
How is it that I know the beginning guitar riff on smoke on the water, but never heard any other part of the song…. I’m thinking because the rest of this is underwhelming. Giving it a 2 because the album was short enough for me not to be annoyed I was still listening to this.
⭐️⭐️ - Good protometal archival album, chugalugging blues riffs - good guitar instructional album. Fun guitar and keyboard tones. Smoke on the water is as kind of blah as I remember it, but Never Before is a decent stand out, calls back to their prog roots.
Badly dated, with a genuinely unpleasant organ ruining a lot of songs. The two classics are the only songs worth listening to, and even they soundd a bit creaky.
Mweh
Ok Space trucks was good
Maybe this hit a lot harder back in 1972, but listening for the first time in 2025 I found it to be quite dull. A lot of the tracks just kind of blended together
Good for the genre/time but ultimately doesn't excite me today.
I listened to this 5 hours ago and do not remember a thing about it
These songs seem to go on forever. Not a good thing.
Just a bit to proto for me.
Imagine being a band of great instrumentalists who jam really well together. All you want to do is jam out, trade solos, and ROCK! But, your A&R man says you need songs — you can’t just jam. So you write some songs , just so they’ll let you jam. Although two or three of the songs are really good — most exist simply to provide a funky base line & space for soloing. That imaginary band is Deep Purple. The guitar work, organ/synth, and base lines are propulsive & fun! Richie Blackmoore’s talent is undeniable. And, Ian Gillen is among the best Rock vocalists ever. Songs like Smoke on the Water & Child in Time (not featured on this album but one of the top 10 songs in the history of rock) are iconic. But most of the songs (eg, Space Truckin’) have no reason for being, except to organize the band musically. Unfortunately, the songs as a collective effort make this a 2.
Ah, yeah, I know some of these tracks, but would not previously have been able to say who made them. Deep Purple is weirdo rock and honestly I like it. Being upstream from metal gives me some resentful feelings, but it's not really their fault to be part of an evolution. Overall, it was a worthwhile listen, but I'm not coming back.
ROCK
rock para papais que já tiveram sua fase maconheira (smoke on the water é é um bong e ninguem vai tirar isso da minha cabeça) é meio que a trilha sonora inteira de That 70's show num album. a série é boa. agora, o album não me desce não...
Boomer-riffic
Ну хард рок не мое Понравилась одна песня. Слушабельно 4/10
not really vibing with this. also minus one point for smoke on the water.
I like hard rock. I like when they noodle around like on Picture of Home and Never Before. Nice to hear the origin album of Smoke on the Water. Would be sick if Smoke on the Water had the distortion turned way up and lots of palm muted E string chugs. You know what, I'm gonna look for some metal covers. Still a great track Intro of Lazy is really cool Edit Feb 26 2026: 4 --> 3. I find it generally plain. I also gave ZZ Top Tres Hombres a 2 today Edit Mar 3 2026: 3 --> 2. Yeah I find this quite plain and I don't dig the lyrics
Noy my cup of tea
Sounds like the FM classic rock radio station being piped into the high school weight training room. Not a fan.
I hope I'll never be bored enough by all the other music available to really want to intensely listen to this needlessly fist-pumping muscle-car (but British) equivalent of an album. Music I already found somewhat stinking of male armpits and stale beer when I it was somewhat more recent. In Germany, Deep-Purple-as-a-reference were very much unavoidable for long long years, defining "rock music" and thus giving it if not a bad than a mediocre name. One extra point for giving legions of wannabe musicians their first riff to imitate, with the dreadful "Smoke On The Water". There is the somewhat odd Swiss singer/songwriter/engineer Stephan Sulke who has his own story of the Montreux Casino fire inspiring that song, as he was about to install a high-end studio there at the time, but I guess this is not the place to go down that rabbit hole.
Highway Star was alright, but the only Deep Purple song I properly like, Fireball, isn't on this album. A lot of the music is pretty dull, livened up only by the more interesting drumming. I don't really get why this was popular.
About 2 mins of decent riffs buried in 41 minutes of overblown dramatic rock bollocks
The good songs (Smoke in the Water, Highway Star, Space Trucking) are really good. The rest of the album is meh at best. Deep Purple is one of those bands that had one or two good songs per album but we're never an album band. Their greatest hits collection is great tho
Like every song but not collectively
It wasn't terrible but nothing really stood out to me
Well that settles it, after two albums for this list, I do not like Deep Purple. Their music is boring. It’s mediocre songs used as vehicles for solos that are mostly also mediocre and boring.
I liked Lazy… but not a fan of old school rock.
Already had the live album with most of this on it... don't understand why it is imperitive that I hear both of these? 4/10
This was fine, but largely forgettable.
Not my style but not bad. I’d probably revisit this if I ever decide to get more into rock music. From the top it reminded me of rock band style rock lol, smoke on the water surprised me / confirmed that.
Not exactly my cup of tea but this would be great to listen to if you were on a roadtrip somewhere with all the car windows down
Generic and bland. Not offensive but not wonderful either, just middle of the road. highway star is pretty good for the occasional listen. Smoke on the water's riff is pretty legendary but the song itself is kinda eh. 2/5 stars.
This one was just a little too over the top butt-rocky for me.
Typical 70s album. Not for me
I will give them credit, there were times were it sounded like they were at least trying to do something unique. The organ was a nice touch, but overall this is just so lazy. Smoke on the Water one of the most overrated songs of all time.
okay im starting this one. at least its fucking short. okay doing fun riff + comparing women to cars again. why is the top 1001 albums list full of identical rock albums w identical riffs from identical bands singing about women as objects. im sorry im sure theres technical skill on display w the shredding solo but so far yawn snooze boring been there its hour 4+ of this shit. OH OKAY this one is at least about how u were a dumbass and ur gf left u? that demonstrates more character + personality growth than any of these other chucklefucks so far. nothing else goin on here but moral victory ig? okay love the bass solo on pictures of home. they thought never before was the single on this one? lol. there is smth appropriate abt listening to a guy sing I NEVERR FELT SO BAD BEFORE, NEVER BEFORE given my current mental state (bad, stressed abt deadlines, feel like failure) + physical circumstances (gonna sleep next to the carbon monoxide detector bc we need to keep the unsafe furnace on 1 more night bc its 15 degrees out) + being stuck listening to dad rock. like girl ive prolly felt so bad before but this is up there! damn true! okay yeah smoke on the water. this is a pretty good song its true + the story of recording the album being the single off the album is charming - "no matter what we get out of this" money dude ig! just not sure smoke on the water is a good enough reason for this to be on a 1001 great albums list dude yno? okay hmm. ill suffer this 7m song 2 live bc it starts w extremely sad hammond organ. maybe everythingn the other long songs needed was hammond organ? much 2 consider. ooh its also abt depression lmao good. no wait harmonica?? put that back. space trucking? is this what teenage boys thought was cool in 1972? well at least that ones short i wouldve blown a gasket. oh my god im going to have to start listening to these on private spotify sessions i can already see my recommendations from the algorithm going to shit. i would not buy this record i would not tell my friends and family i guess smoke on the water is good but i am just out of fucking patience for this kind of white guys in the 20th century going meedly meedly mee on guitars kind of music!
Admittedly, Deep Purple has always been a bit of a blind spot for me. Like most, I obviously knew Smoke on the Water and to a lesser extent Highway Star, but beyond that I could not have named a song, nor had I knowingly listened to one. I think there are things on the album that are certainly innovative for the time of its recording. The hard rock and heavy prog sound that influenced and pushed other acts to follow is genuine. The keyboards, in particular, stand out in a way that would still feel fresh today. That said, there’s nothing that would draw me back in to listen again. If I’m looking for similar acts from the same time frame, I’ve always connected more with Thin Lizzy and Black Sabbath who pack a lot of the same sort of punch, but for any number of reasons connect with me more. This is a good candidate for 2.5 stars but I’m rounding down to 2.
For an album that’s so closely associated with that burgeoning eruption of late 60s/early 70s youth rebellion, it’s surprisingly boring. Plus Ian Gillan is one of the worst lyricists in music history. The (few) iconic riffs can’t save this album from its mediocre songwriting.
Boring & repetitive. 1 star for 'Smoke on the water' and 'When a blind man cries' but the rest is really bad in my opinion.
A classic rock album! All the songs blend together and at times sound quite similar to the point where you can’t tell when song has ended and a new one has begun. The only memorable song is “Smoke On The Water”.
Don’t think I had heard of these guys before. Album seemed like a typical 70s rock vibe. Like the song ‘Never Before’. And the very next song had a guitar riff that reminded me of a friend at uni that played it all the time, but never actually knew the song! Now I do ‘Smoke on the water’
Boring
**A lot of noise and screaming. Most tracks sounded a like. Only “Smoke on the water “, worth listening to.
1-2
Everything fails in comparison with Highway Star
I don't hate it. I just don't really like it.
Holy shit, the first song stresses me out. Just because you CAN play fast electric guitar doesn’t mean you should for endless minutes. Leo song is much more palatable pace.
Some of the instrumentation is inspired, like the drumming at the end of ‘Space Truckin’,’ but quickly gets repetitive. The songwriting is weak, and Ian Gillan’s voice does not do it for me. This defines generic rock music - without soul, try-hard lyrics that get you nowhere, blues riffs without true blues intensity that the likes of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath manage to incorporate into their albums. ‘Lazy’ is the best song here - at least the harmonica has some oomph.
Skikkelig klassisk papparock
Easy beats, recognizable riffs. The recipe for Smoke on the water. The rest is average.
Too hard for me
It was fine. Smoke on the Water isn’t even that good a song
A little too slow for me, just didn’t hold my attention
I don’t feel like this has held up that well.
Not for me. But thanks for inspiring millions of 14 year old boys to learn guitar
I mean, it's OK. I appreciate it's merit for the time it came from but without having grown up on it, I feels pretty much unheard of to me. Aside from the hits... 2 stars
Loud and brash and riffy but kinds slow
The other Deep Purple album I had absolutely rocked. This one just felt kinda generic & bland.
Boring. Has one iconic song surrounded by 70s mediocrity.
This is the only Deep Purple album I am familiar with. And after playing it through twice, I don't think it has stood the test of time (53 years since release). I think the individuals in the group are accomplished, but collectively, they make music that seems to me to be plodding and banal, particularly the lyrics. I suspect this album was influential on other bands through the early 1970s, but really in the mid-2020s it's not a very exciting listen (and not at all challenging).
70s glam rock just is not my bag. The fake seriousness just makes me cringe.
It was ok, but not really my cup of tea
Hair metal meets cialis commercial
This list does not need three (and counting) Deep Purple albums, but this is the best of them. It's got Smoke on the Water on it and the rest of the tracks are quite varied and sound good. I would scrap the other two albums and make room for someone else, seriously.
Like others - recognized 'Smoke on the Water' but I'm not much a hard rock guy.
Bored now.
I like Pictures from Home. I assume the way the drums sound is due to the remastering - the drums are particularly loud and clear. I hear them more than the guitars. "We all came out to Montreux on the Lake Geneva shoreline..." Come on, let's go space truckin'.... The singer's voice sounds really good in the slower songs when he's not screaming. The screaming just sounds like generic rock screaming.
Not my thing.
ok Michael suggested I listen regardless of the love I don't feel for DP..and I can confirm that I still don't love their sound but can appreciate them - and it seems so dated to me, like Styx - for me that organ got tired after a while
I can see how this is the blueprint for a lot of metal that followed. There's a few high points but overall it faded into the background for me.
This all sounds good, but it also sounds pretty stupid. Smoke on the Water is famous without being exciting (I never liked when it came onto the radio while listening to classic rock growing up). And I have a soft spot for Highway Star because it was on Rock Band. But this simply doesn't excite me.
way to many american dad titles in this playlist
I would say this album is fine. Heard a bunch of the songs on the other Deep Purple album so might’ve leant to some of the staleness for me
Smoke on the wah-tah
no lyrics
Never could dig this band
Hate it. Eerlijkheid gebiedt te zeggen, er zitten een paar nummertjes tussen die best aardig zijn. Die noem ik dan maar highlights. Alles is relatief per slot van rekening. 5/10 Highlights Never Before When A Blind Man Cries
thank god for the deep purple rhythm section, carrying their absurdly overrated more famous members even harder then led zepp. the reputation of this one has always baffled me because surrounding records (especially made in japan) absolutely prove that this lineup of deep purple was an absolute Rock Music Machine that could create thrilling and distinctive music for days. this lumpy mid-tempo slush is so inherently not for me that if im gonna make my peace with it i have to accept it as an intentional choice...a bit of a Back To Basics record in the vein of , uh, Take A Look In The Mirror by korn (first thing that comes to mind lmao). unfortunately i just do not like the individual parts enough to get a lot out of the supposedly more focused presentation of them...made in japan outdoes this not only in speed but in weight. no other song is anywhere near as bad as smoke on the water (there are other classic rock staples i hate listening to more, but none i understand the appeal of less), but neither does the Intentionally Holding Back presentation create sufficient tension for me pretty much anywhere here. the spectre of this lineup's world-destroying heights should hang in the background as intimidating, the unsettling feeling that theyre only using a fraction of their power, but its so textureless for me that it more just erases those heights from existence instead. might listen to made in japan later at least
I appreciate Deep Purple’s influence over heavy metal and rock. I really enjoyed the virtuosic guitar and playing overall. However I found the music a little too straightforward sometimes, and boring. Not really for me this one.
These songs are so unnecessarily long, I disassociate halfway through.
All just a bit of a yawn really.
Only smoke in the water and when a blind man cries are worth
Nothing special but enjoyed having it on in the background!
Sadly didn’t do too much for me… I think it was a bit mild for my tastes, but in fairness I have been assaulting my senses with a lot of grindcore recently and altering my brain chemistry/attention span. Smoke on the Water is still very satisfying, and Space Truckin’ is fun too!
I’ve always thought of Deep Purple as pretty lame so I had never given them a proper listen-through. I enjoyed a lot of the instrumentals and solos more than I was expecting and I actually kinda dug the first song . My verdict, however, remains the same: lame!
Fucking boomer rock. I can't believe there are two Deep Purple albums on this. It was okay. I have to give Smoke on the Water some credit. But listening to it again made me like it even less. The lyrics are so damn simplistic. I respect the opening guitar riff, but that's all the song is. I don't enjoy this era of music, and this album did nothing to change my mind about it.
ok
Nonono No
Not great. They sounded like a generic, local hard rock band. Nothing particularly special about their lazy riffs, mediocre guitar playing, or weak vocals.
Very boring I'm afraid. Just really vanilla dad rock and not at all for me. Guitar solos are cool and all, but have you ever thought about not doing one?
Except for Smoke on the Water, I didn’t enjoy this album.
boooof
The guitars were definitely slammin brother. Quite a few headbangers in there. Smoke on the water is a classic
boring
This is one of the most hollow albums I've ever listened to. It feels like these guys knew how to work a studio and their instruments, but what are these songs? This entire album played out and the overriding emotion I felt was cringe. As the album started I was sitting at a solid 3, but over the course of the album the trite and meaningless songs wore me down to a solid 2.
Honestly very mediocre at best. Even hearing Smoke on the Water I was blown away at how incredibly boring that famous riff is. The staying power of some of these classics is mind boggling unless you take into account the amount of 11 year olds who learned how to play guitar by someone teaching that riff to them real quick.
Kinda boring. Seemed like the were a wannabe Black Sabbath with a less talented roster.
Man, this one is just a straight up classic rock album that feels like it got a lot of air time in like Cincinnati and Detroit. Maybe upstate NY. Some tracks are definitely iconic and made it to me coming along like Smoke on the Water. But a lot of it escaped my interest. The hard driving guitars and precise drums with the vocal howls make this perfect for driving fast down the highway. Not to my taste.
Four of these seven tracks were on “Made in Japan,” the live album we listened to earlier on the list. With so much overlap, I have a hard time justifying the inclusion of both on the list. “Smoke on the Water” is a classic, but apparently I didn’t love the version on the live album. Surprisingly, the version here doesn’t live up to the version in my head either. It’s become so iconic that the riff that plays in our heads hits harder (and is a more significant part of the song) than the actual thing. It’s still the best on the album though, and the other songs all equally ooze early 70s hard rock, even if “Space Truckin’” is a bit weird.
War noch nie meins. Und Hasssong Nummer Eins dabei...
Der Sound von Deep Purple ist einzigartig, sofort erkannt - und nach 2-3 Tracks leider dann auch immer wieder das gleiche. Favorit, wen wundert es: Smoke On The Water.
All I could think of while listening to this was Spinal Tap. I think teen me would have liked this more than adult me does. 2.5/5
Some absolute classics like Smoke on the Water and Highway Star (Rockband song). Don’t think I’ll go back to the album though.
i wonder what other albums could've been on this list if Deep Purple didnt make one good song that one time
I’m not a fan of the dad rock genre or 7 minute gutair solos, So none of this is for me. It almost lost a whole point for the first song being one of the most ridiculous lyrics I’ve ever heard. I wish I could say more but it’s not my genre and not my sound.
Very hard to not think of listening to Spinal Tap. Highway Star is very ordinary. Smoke on the Water is good, but overplayed! Maybe I'm a Leo is ok and When a blind mind cries is not great.
not a big fan of deep purple. it was crazy hearing smoke on the water outside of just the opening riff over and over and over
“Yeah, Yeah, Yeah – Space Truckin’!!!!!!” No band or record in this esteemed list is more Spinal Tap-esque (and not in a good way). Sure there are some major hooks, but from the dead-dull cover to the dumb name to the banal lyrics to vocals more screamed than sung, this is music from the tar pits. It’s impossible not to see the air-guitaring and head-bobbing kids in their tight tees, bell bottom jeans and bad well-combed winged haircuts just fully digging this heaviness. Some of the keyboard riffs are engaging and Blackmore could surely riff, but Gillian is not an especially impressive singer and overall this is just dinosaur-ific.
Smoke on the water, others were non descript dad rock
Interesting as a relic of early heavy metal, but otherwise nothing to get too excited about. Basic schlocky blues-based rock. I guess the musicians were pretty good, but the album as a whole? Meh.
Like this more than deep purple in rock - still not my thing but easier to listen to - would give 2.5 if that was possible
Nope. Don’t need yet another Deep Purple album on this list 🙄
It‘s like the mother of dusty Stoner Rock that doesn‘t forget its bar blues roots.
Man, I cannot stand the early hard rock stuff. This album has everything I should like. Roger Glover is beastly on the bass. The over-driven organ is super cool and well played. Blackmore rips some interesting solos. The band is tight as all hell. And yet... It sucks. The lyrics are so cringe inducing. Am I supposed to be mocking them? They're joking right? I really can't tell. It's all so dumb. As well executed as the songs are, they really don't add up to anything more than generic 70's hard rock. It's a shame. Honestly, I bet if I was a young person in the time this band came out, I'd be a huge fan, but I wasn't and time really passed Deep Purple by. There's more interesting music to listen to now even if this somewhat interesting as a time capsule.
Ok. Just ok.
Unpopular opinion number 1. I much prefer purple with coverdale and Hughes, gillan always left me cold. Number 2. Smoke on the water isn't that great, riff aside its pretty average. Number 3. There is an awful lot of filler on this album. Number 4. Rainbow and whitesnake maybe purples bastard children but god they are so much better.
Space Truckin is fun.
Meh. 2.5
Not for me
I don’t care how iconic the Smoke on the Water riff is, it’s the first thing every kid learns to pluck on a guitar for a reason, and that reason is because you don’t need any talent or imagination to play it.
Album felt like mostly filler with one “hit”. The songs and the jam sections were fine it just didn’t feel like it went anywhere for me
This was one of the most mediocre dude rock albums I’ve heard. There is nothing special about this album and one listen was enough for a lifetime.
The organ solo before Lazy was the best part of this album. Overall, not a terrible album but find it hard reconciling it was one of best albums of all time.
Jesus wept.
Kinda heavy metal. Not my music.
Rythym guitar rock, nice and upbeat and I rolled with it but didn’t do anything special for me.
I could listen to this over and over again.
4/10 This falls right into the “not for me but more interesting than I expected” category Overall it is plodding hard rock/metal that makes me think of pub bands and old men Vocal stylings verge towards metal, which doesn’t work for me But the music was more varied than expected - a lot of (boring) rules rock influence, plus some jazz and even funk Probably the most impressive aspect was the rhythm, particularly bass Best: Never Before
Rap is crap type rock music
2 good song but the rest didn't do anything for me.
Didn't every teenager with a guitar play Smoke on the Water?
war ok mal ein album von ihnen gehört zu haben
heavy
Not my thing
Was t a fan of this music when I was younger, still am not a fan
that sure is some hard rock pt 3 turns out hard rock isn’t super my thing. I do appreciate smoke on the water and pictures of home for what they are though
Nicht wirklich ein Fan von dieser Art von Rock. Smoke on the Water hat ein klassisches Riff. Ansonsten finde ich den Track aber auch nicht zu interessant.
This seems like the most boring generic version on 70’s rock. I didn’t really get anything out of it. A couple of cool organ moments. Highway Star is the worst song. Never Before had a groovy intro but it just goes into the song which I wasn’t into.
It’s just so generic.. there’s more than enough great 70’s rock, we don’t need deep purple on this list.
When this came up, I thought: not my usual jam, but why the fuck not, so put it on at high volume and went for a walk. Turns out the 'why not' is fairly evident after about 3 tracks. I can imagine this sounded raw and energetic when it came out but it now just sounds a bit mediocre. Not angry, not poppy, very dated and weirdly bland.
How many more Deep Purple albums must we endure? This is my 3rd after just over 300 albums, so they make up around 1% of the list so far, which doesn't bode well. This one gets a marginally better rating due to the significance of Smoke on the Water, but overall its as cringe as Deep Purple in Rock.
2.8
not my thing
fine
This did very little for me
Not bad, know smoke on the water already of course. Classic 70s rock I would call it, none of the songs are particularly memorable it's not my thing, but I think I can appreciate that this was probably quite a new sound when it was released maybe. 5/10
IDK, fine I guess.
It's the grandaddies of butt rock!
Similar feelings as the thin lizzy album, but not quite as boring. I liked two or three tracks. Hoping I’m done with the early 70s metal albums for a minute.
Just meh
Iconic album in the world of rock n roll. The good songs are really good and the others are mediocre.
It's a precursor to sludge metal, I guess?
I liked this more than the live album. I would rate higher if the rest of the tracks matched the dynamic energy of "Highway Star."
Mid.
Just not their best work, really surprised to see it on this list. Unless they have other albums on here, I'd really question the decision to put this album on this list over their 70s work.
Average rock, instrumentals are good but vocals are super dated. Space Truckin is the best song.
Classic rock. Pretty solid.
"highway star" is pretty good but outside of that it's basically just that song but worse for the next 30 minutes. i guess the funny riff on smoke on the water is cool. not really my groove.
I think a common theme with this site is to think a classic album is an album with one of the "hits" on it but doesn't really have any other good songs on it. This is the case with Machine Head, Deep Purple In Rock is such a better album that Machine Head, but it doesn't have smoke on the water on it, which is a pretty average song anyway.
Slow, old school rock and roll, maybe some early metal. Some tracks, you can hear the influence of soul and r&b seeping through. For me, not a memorable album, probably will not seek out again.
I had Highway Star on an existing playlist, but otherwise not a big fan of Deep Purple. It's all kind of basic 1970s rock, nothing really stands out for me.
Nah, it was enough having heard Smoke on the Water countless time. Didn’t need this.
Smoke on the Water has that recognizable melody
Riff heavy. Monotonous. Classic heavy rock that seems tame now. Can see why it's important but not my music.
Wildly overrated
I've only ever heard Smoke On the Water, and was not a fan. This album made me appreciate the band a bit more, but I'm still not a fan. Too many solos that go on for so long. 2/5
70's jam band music, it's what you'd expect & nothing to write home about
one famous song but not a fan of metal
listened to this 4 hours ago. dont remember a single note my own thoughts overpowered it. wholly lackluster but I cant remember it being actively bad
Eh. Tempted to give it a 3 because there were a couple good songs and actually some nice riffs, but I also don't really care and I could go without listening to it ever again. We'll call it a 2.5 rounded down.
Big hairband energy
This journey has made me aware that there are so many more shades of 70s rock (and especially of British 70s rock) than I ever dreamed. At the same time, I think I could have died happily not being so aware of this, and I'm getting burned out on the entire decade. This had some okay tracks, but was overall incredibly forgettable. I will avoid listening to it again. It wasn't horrible, just unmemorable. 2/5
Smoooooooke on the waaaaaater. Sex drugs rock n roll 2.5/5
These guys just do nothing for me. Can't find anything particularly visceral or engaging in any of their compositions or lyrics. By no means are they bad tunes, but boy do I find them boring. Really wish there was a one album per artist cap. Two and a half. Fave track: Space Truckin'
okay
I lost my review for this album, but it's okay because I didn't really like it very much 2/5
This seems much more about perspiration than inspiration. And am not sure I'd want to be in that room. All a bit ploddy and the tunes aren't all that. The story behind 'Smoke' sounds quite interesting, but the song itself doesn't really reflect that.
shit ass dad rock
Nothing original, soulless
Of its time. The intro on Lazy was a snoozee
Artwork: 5/10 Favourite Tracks: - Maybe I‘m a Leo - Smoke on the Water - When A Blind Man Cries Rating: 5 / 10
This is dumb ass shit, it’s the structure and content of the songs that ruin things rather the general sound, but it’d be aesthetically dishonest of me to deny the thrill of ‘Highway Star’. (That one even has a great organ solo!)
Just not a metal fan
I can see how it may have influenced a lot of music I like, but the riffs are often overly repetitive and the solos tend to go on far too long. Most of the album sounds the same, especially in terms of dynamics. The one exception to this is When A Blind Man Cries, which really stands apart from the rest of the songs and was the highlight of the album for me.
Boring as fuck, only tracks i half liked were Maybe I'm a Lion and Smoke on the Water, offers nothing special sound wise and falls into generic category for me. Sure, it is influential, I recognize that, but personally it was not an enjoyable listening experience, and to me, it just sounded dull all throughout
Nope, echt veel te gedateerd
Ouwe rockmuziek. Niet zo heel interessant. **
Yeah nah, I’m good
A killer start with "Highway Star," the album has a lot of highs and lows. "Machine Head" has a handful of great songs that are shuffled in with several semi-questionable tracks, such as "Space Truckin'," which is an okay track at best - if it weren't for its redeeming solo. The transition from "Never Before" to "Smoke On The Water" seems very abrupt, as do some other transitions. Other songs feel a bit too drawn out. Deep Purple leaves you wanting more from this, but maybe not more of this exact album.
2.5 The dudes from Green Light would usually play this when we got a used one in and I like it. Smoke on the Water doesn’t really do the rest of the album too much justice. Really pretty heavy for the time it was released but I don’t see myself coming back to it a ton . Favorites: Highway Star, Maybe I’m a Leo, Pictures of Home
2.5 I don't know a lot about Deep Purple aside from Hush and the two hits here, and compared to those, I like Hush a lot more, so maybe I'm a bigger fan of their earlier psychedelic sound? I can't listen to Smoke on the Water without thinking of Guitar Hero, and I can't listen to Highway Star without thinking of that car ad it was in. Not necessarily bad things, but I think that paired with the unremarkable nature of the other songs ultimately leaves the album lacking a sense of its own identity. I guess I can see how it would be influential for heavy metal, but that’s never been a particularly favorite genre of mine anyway. Favorite song: Smoke on the Water
boy oh boy did you think i'd like this one? Smoke on the water is pretty good
This is maybe the most boring and uninteresting version of Rock n Roll I have every listened to. There is nothing at all interesting or exciting or rocking about this.
Världens mest berömda gitarriff men i övrigt imponerar det inte på mig.
not my style
It was alright
Did not like hombre, famous r8ff on one of the songs but the rest just sounded like mush.
More plodding rock by numbers. Dull.
Smoke on the Water saves this album from a 1, but damn is this so generic sounding.
Blackmore's guitar in the opening track reminds me of the evolution of free style skateboarding. Very plain compared to what is being done today. The famous track are overshadowed today by "Pictures of Home" and "Never Before". Blackmore takes a backseat to John Lord's keyboards on every track.
Bit too hair metal for me. Needs to be a bit heavier. I can appreciate the musicianship though.
p256. 1972. 2 stars. Primeval 70s hard rock. So this is where we put the blame for a thousand hysterical shrieking vocalists and an eternity of guitar wankage. I found this tedious beyond belief, really struggled to listen all the way through. Well produced though. Thank god for punk.
This one was more grating than the other Deep Purple albums this generator made me listen to.
Prejudices confirmed, bit pile of meh
An encyclopedia of rock and roll and cliches, circa 1972. Is it possible to enjoy “Smoke On the Water” in any non-ironic sense? (I doubt “Space Truckin’” can be enjoyed at all.) And three Deep Purple records on this list – seriously? Someone needs to time-travel a good bit forward.
Imagine if Steely Dan couldn't write songs and could still play musical instruments very well but played them fast because... well... what else are you meant to do without songs?
Classic. Smoke on the Water. Good. But Great? I dunno.
The solo in Smoke Over Water excuses a multitude of…well, not sins. But something not good.
I have this album on the original vinyl picture disk, never been played, and now I've listened to this, it never will be. I don't like the organ sound. It just isn't suited to rock music in my view. The vocal is too screamy and the lyrics sound very dated and cliched. I don't even like Smoke on the Water these days, I'm bored of it.
Yeah, so I mean, Highway Star still gets me. I mean, the lyrics alone on that song - there's a lot to unpack there. Smoke on the Water is one of the first songs I ever learned on guitar, so there's a werid sentimental attachment there. But it is a pretty plodding song, for sure. But overall this doesn't move the needle much. Feels very stuck in its time and doesn't deliver a whole lot of memorable moments.
Kinda sick of this type of music by now tbh
Sorry
It's borderline unfair. To have this following Moss Side Story. Relatively speaking, I'm almost thinking about giving this a 5. Just the first song alone makes it outstanding relative to Mr. Adamson.
Meh, another boring rock album.
Ive never really been a huge fan of deep purple, they are a really great band, the guitarist i forget his name, i do really love, and say if he was in another band, like maybe with dio, I would really enjoy the band but idk deep purple just doesnt work for me. All their songs start here and and here(my hand is up high for both), and i really like direction in songs. Good album, not to my taste.
I found this album to be very uneven. The big hits out of it are very good, top notch hard rock / heavy metal songs. Everything else however is very mid and I didn't really find a "diamond in the rough" among the deep cuts of this album. Overall it's just fine.
i'm just gonna say it. i almost hated this. not quite, but it was close. and it's not JUST because i've heard smoke on the water as much as anyone else has - i just don't give a fuck about this kinda proto-wank-metal. sorry?
For being the inspiration behind the most abused guitar store riff in history, this album does tend to punch above its weight. However, it still gets mired in repetitive song structures and gratuitous noodling that tends to wear thin after a while
dont care 4 it lolz
Me gustan los gritos la vdd, lo demás bastante clasicote, motero caspas pero llevo uno dentro en vdd que le vamos a hacer Pelin aburrido algún temazo pero podría vivir sin haberlo escuchado Judas priest pero sin molar
It was okay.
kinda standard
Can appreciate the craft but it igniting zero emotional response.
Rather smooth and forgettable. Was expecting it to be much heavier, but it's elevator rock.
Oh no
Guitar, guitar, guitar and more guitar.
"hush" is a great song. unfortunately, it's not on this album
I still don't like Deep Purple.
This is not my vibe. Too much hair and bluesy rock. But the electric guitars are so great in stereo - especially the intros on "Never Before" and the iconic "Smoke on the Water."

Great energy but boring songs
Don't think that one song is enough to make up for the rest
Smoke on the Water earned it a 2. Shite.
It reminded me of a high school band. I get why they are in the Pantheon of Rock, but the musicianship is lacking for my taste.
Àlbum correcte però amb el que no he acabat de connectar tot i tenir dos o tres temazos indiscutibles. Millor que els darrers que m'ha tocat escoltar però oblidable.
I couldn't get into this album. They clearly want to be a hard rocking metal band, but they just don't have the riffs and the energy to keep it up.
I think the only Deep Purple songs I've ever heard are Smoke on the Water and Hush... This is a little more "gay leather bar" than I was expecting... but story of my life. I see why they're a one hit wonder. Smoke on the Water's lyrics are actually pretty bad when you look at them. Like trash bad. I know they're a classic/iconic band but fuck em. 2. And that's being generous.
Exactly what i expected. At least what I listened to of it
meeeh
Like the Doors but more dad-rock (if that were even possible). Not my favorite.
Hard rock and early heavy metal built from roaring organ, distorted guitar, pounding drums, and forceful vocals feels like sitting in the engine room of a ship while the crew keeps demonstrating how powerful the machinery is. It's perfectly competent and has plenty of energy, but for me it never turns that energy into genuine excitement. The heavy riffs and impressive musicianship are more noticeable than compelling, leaving me with an album I found okaish but simply not very engaging.
Don’t like
just not my thing
Don’t like this gender
Please don’t make me listen to Deep Purple again.
Deep Purple må ha varit betydelsefulla för hårdrockens utveckling. Men deras välspelade blueshårdrock är riktigt tråkig att lyssna på. Väldigt lite attityd, mer fokus på att sätta synkoperna på rätta stället.
Incredibly boring and very awful.
Just stop.
Highway star - sounds like it should be played in a movie not in a good way Maybe I'm a leo - don't like the way the guys singing, guitar riffs or solos too long Pictures of home - no Never before - nope Smoke on the water - why do they keep talking in the beginning Lazy - nice beginning, basically only guitar
I put my review of this in The Residents one so here is the Residents one: I don’t feel well after that.
Struggled to finish this one. I don't particularly like dad rock and this is bad dad rock. No saving grace here, even Smoke on the Water kind of sucks beyond the iconic opening riff.
a lot of unnecessary guitar solos. nothing particularly memorable. just very generic dad rock. i think hush is the only song i actually like by them and it's not on this album. not nearly as painful as the aerosmith album i had the other day though. i can listen to the whole album without having to skip, which has to count for something.
Probably in the top 50 most influential albums of all time. 50 years later, it's just tired and boring dad rock. Also Smoke on the Water isn't good.
Goodness me, this is tedious! Speaking as a dad, could you stop calling this "dad rock" please? This music now sounds so Jurassic that it should be called "grandad rock" instead. Honestly, if any child of mine ever bought me a "dad rock" CD for Father's Day (featuring such toe-curling drivetime "classics" as Smoke On The Water), I would immediately disown them *angryface*
Not for me, thanks.
I just don't like heavy metal, and this is just that, i'm sure its great in that genre, but not for me
Macho posturing disguised as music
Deep purple forever The best album
Unc slop
No me gustó. Ultimamente pasa eso, jaja
Last song was the best of the album. Not really a fan of the genre. Smoke on the water is cool
Could not wait for this dross to end
I don’t like rock music all that much so the sound just wasn’t for me. It’s more beat-heavy more than melody so I ended up just skipping through the songs in a few minutes. I didn’t pay attention to the lyrics so I have nothing to say about them.
мимо
no
Immediately, this record is highly irritating. Thoroughly adolescent. Don't think I had fully appreciated how dumb the lyrics to Smoke On The Water are. Every solo is either stupid or boring. Main riff of Space Truckin' is pretty great, though. Pre-teen me thought this record was cool. 40-something me understands that it is totally lame.
Marginally better than AC/DC and AM but only marginally so, this achieved third bottom so far because one can’t help nodding along to the opening of SOTW…
We all know exactly one deep purple song, and honestly I'd forgotten it was them. As soon as "Smoke on the Water" came on I went "oh yeah, I DO know a Deep Purple song". At this point I don't even think most people have listened to the whole song, we all just know the riff because it's so ubiquitous - which itself only happened because it's so simple that everyone who has ever learned beginner guitar has learned to play it awkwardly. It is my belief that this album was included on this list entirely because of that one riff, and the riff is not even that good.
i appreciate finally knowing that guitar riff. it was so whatever i accidentally listened to the album twice while doing laundry
а-ля асдс, в общем не очень
Meh. Classic stoner rock
Good grief, this was a painfull listen.
