I'm not too fond of punk. I have a couple bands that I really enjoy but in general it tends to really grate on my nerves. This isn't too bad, I wouldn't listen to it again but I can see how it's popular.

Overall a fun punk album with raw production and energy but with entertaining lyricism that is quickly engaging. The only negative is that classic punk albums quickly lose their touch after about 20 minutes of run time.

Punk that seemed slightly less aggravating than some others before however it's still a genre and album that I cannot ensure for longer than 10 minutes

Wie sagte Henry Rollins so schön, "The Blood Brothers are gonna save us all!", der Typ weiß wovon er spricht! Und was sollman zu Black Flag mehr sagen als LEGENDARY! Später dann gaaaanz anders... Urgestein des Punk, aber 'genießbar' würd ichs heute nicht mehr unbedingt nennen! ;) Dafür umso mehr 'in your face"! TV Party, wie geil!!!

Die rohe Energie ist schon echt geil, so eine unpolierte Faus in die Fresse hab ich lang nicht mehr gehört. 18 Jahre alter Stifte hätte wohl 6 Sterne gegeben, mittelalterlicher Mittelschicht Stifte gibt noch immer 4 :-D

I first heard Damaged when I was 18, which seems about the right age. But I perhaps wasn't angry enough to get the full impact of Rollins' ire. I'll tell you what though - change "TV Party" to "Internet Party", update the shows to website and nothing much has changed. We got nothing better to do.

Listening to this made me want to listen to more punk. I appreciate the 15 songs coming in at just about 35 minutes. Not sure if it was intentional, but I found so many lines laugh-worthy. In Six Pack, "what do they know about partying or anything else and in TV Party, "tv's broke what are we gonna do, we're gonna miss our favorite show." I want to become a rock star so that I can cover TV Party only so that I can sing real loud, "No TV Party tonight." There's also a line in the dark, very dark Room 13 that I love, "as I'll see to it." Somehow it seems very Victorian for a punk band talking about death. I had no idea that Henry Rollins had just started as lead singer with them in 1981, while making this album.

I found this ok, but maybe a little too much over breakfast. When it got to ‘Gimme Gimme Gimme’ I was hoping for an ABBA cover…

Oh Hank, calm TF down. Playing live in bands was fun but having a punk band on the card was always rubbish. Bass players always on the down stroke is fun though. I can live without this thanks

Black Flag raised some red flags with me. Had to check if they were Nazis, apparently not at all, but some of their listeners are, not their fault but not my bag.

5 stars for the vibes, but I wouldn't be able to tell this apart from any other set of punk rock songs because I can't understand the lyrics, and there isn't a consistent melody throughout each song.

A reasonable punk record engineered to be loud and somewhat obnoxious. Short length tracks make way for urgency with allegro tempos and linear arrangements - 'Damaged' lays walls of overdrive guitars and hard-hitting drum patterns that ultimately incites strong dissentious emotions. While the production is short of modest for a 1980s album, the lyrics remain straightforward and upfront, though this makes the record simpler than it appears to be.

TV Party tonight! TV party tonight! Classic angry youthful punk with a dash of humour. I like it.

Fast and furious, 15 short metal punk songs in just over half an hour. Making rock achievable again.

equal parts furious (Rise Above) and goofy (TV Party) - the authentic voice of American Youth. the better tracks are mostly placed earlier - it loses focus as it progresses to the end - but it still pelts along, full of rage and signifying something. iconic cover.

Pretty rough album that may be the most punk sounding album I’ve heard. The lyrics are messy. The vocals aren’t good. The instrumentals are chaotic. It’s punk but not the kind I like. 2.7/10

I really like the Chats, and it's clear that they are heavily inspired by Black Flag - a band who i was familiar with, but have never listened to this album. I will definitely listen to it again though as it's really good!

I don't mind punk, and I often don't know the lyrics to songs because often to me the singing is just an instrument. But, if singer's voices aren't instruments and they're just screaming, I have to be able to understand what they're screaming about. And I can't. I can occasionally pick up a sentence here or there, but otherwise it's just the same chord and same drums and same screaming endlessly. It either has to sound good, or it has to have a message. This was neither. Every song sounded exactly the same: Thrash-Thrash-Thrash-Thrash-THRAAAASH Thrash-Thrash-Thrash-Thrash-THRAAAASH Thrash-Thrash-Thrash-Thrash-THRAAAASH Thrash-Thrash-Thrash-Thrash-THRAAAASH Sounded like a garage demo of someone on their 3rd week with an instrument.

Too hard

In isolation the album is a solid 4 but she consideration is given to the influence this has had on a lot of the music I love today it's easy to justify the big 5. Imagine the stares going on between the drums and bass during the intro of No More. Accidentally fucking listened to it in shuffle, only the second time I've done that in 243 albums which is a pretty good run. Hate doing that though.

Not a fan of the punk rock

The highs are higher on the first side, no doubt, but I can't help but notice the lack of musical variety. The last seven songs give so much more in terms of texture and tempo variety, and the emotional beats seem much more realized. Influential sound, recording interestingly, worth my time, but not mind-blowing.

I think this album, and having listened to some Dead Kennedys earlier in the year, has given me more appreciation for hardcore punk. I've always found it a hard genre to listen to because there's often not much to latch onto except for the speed and anger. Obviously the speed and anger are the point, but that doesn't always make for an enjoyable listening experience. The bitter sarcasm that drives this album is very interesting. The songs are a clear rejection of the world around the band, but the band is often focusing their songs around an (albeit very ungenerous) interpretation of the cultural perspectives they reject. The version of themselves that they present is one of emotional turmoil. I like the energy of this album. I'm not sure how often I'm going to come back to it, but I can see why it was so influential to young punks in the 80s 4/5

“Damaged” by Black Flag (1981) Fully aware that this review will be ignored by a majority of readers, allow me to lament that poverty from the start. Here’s an album that is punk on steroids. If you want to understand punk, this would be a good place to start. It marks the emergence onto the musical scene of lead singer Henry Rollins (only 20 years old at the time), whose interpretive intelligence and vocal athleticism are on full display in this album. Passions are well harnessed into expressions of: mockery (“TV Party”), pathetic complaint (“Thirsty and Miserable”), despair (“What I See”), depression (“Depression”), rage (almost every song on the album), and various other angst-ridden states of the heart. In terms of the underlying psychology of this collection of songs, when one burrows through the naivety and overwrought sense of seriousness, one lands on some relatively potent commentary: Black Flag counterposes chaotic youthful volition (supercharged by emotional intensity, beer, and who-knows-what other mind-altering substances) with the standard obstacles to their momentary juvenescent happiness. They are excessively intense. But I am forced to call to mind the fact that never in the history of calming down has anyone ever calmed down by being told to calm down. In “Room 13”, we doubt the sincerity of “I rely on your judgment/I've got none of my own/Don't know what I'm doing/It's hard to survive/Don't know if I can do it/I need to belong”. But we applaud the transparency. In “Damaged II”, likewise, we hear “I’m confused. Confused. Don’t wanna be confused. Don’t even feel a thing. No I don’t wanna see. But you can't make me long for your life and security. . . . Stupid feelings, Stupid illusions.” Doesn’t it make you want to sympathize, to seek to understand? If this had been expressed by a troubled child (and it was), would you not be moved to compassion or perhaps join in the misery? What would Jesus do? The rhythm is fast and energized, with instant tempo changes (very difficult to pull off with a combo) and unconventional time signatures that nevertheless make sense. There’s nothing random about these innovations. One could dance to these tunes only if one defines ‘dance’ as people basically bumping into each other. It was and they did. The cover photo depicts Henry Rollins driving his fist into a mirror. Now there’s something on which to reflect. Weaknesses on the album include compositional atonality in lead guitar solos, subdued lead vocal in the mix, and unison backing ‘vocals’ (actually yells) of low quality. It’s by no means perfect. But there’s no doubting that this production is musically expressive. It is very well done, within its genre. I nod my head unsteadily. And I am concerned. 3/5

Je tiens a presenter mes plus plates excuses suite a ma review d'hier. En effet, il est bon de savoir que j'écris ces reviews sur mon temps de travail. Je me dois donc, afin de rester un employé modèle aux yeux de mes collègues, de taper ces reviews que vous aimez tant à une vitesse phénomènale. De plus, il est courant pour moi de rédiger ces reviews avec un Cracker à l'épautre dans la main droite, afin de pouvoir me substanter par la même occasion. Il est donc parfaitement compréhensible que quelques fautes de frappes se glissent entre les lignes. J'ai, par dessus le marché, la facheuse tendance, et ce depuis mes plus jeunes classes, de ne pas me relire. Cela m'avait notamment valu de complétement louper mon entrée en matière, lors d'un paragraphe argumenté sur les mémoires de la guerre d'Algérie. Je tiens d'ailleurs à rappeler à tout le monde que sans l'intervention de Pierre Mendès France (dit PMF, a ne pas confondre avec Pierre Menès ou encore Jeremy Menez France), dieu seul sait dans quelle situation se serait trouvée notre belle nation aujourd'hui.

-Great bass/drum intro on "No More" -Great Guitar intro on "Rise Above" -Overall, the guitar and drums and bass are all fantastic across the album, but I'm just not a fan of the singer. I don't think it is the not conventional singing style, but just that there is little change in basically any way throughout the whole album. There is minimal change in pitch, style, or even volume, and that kind of drags everything else down

Hardcore punk isn't my stuff.

It's...I don't know, fine? I don't despise it enough to brand it with a 1 and seemed OK with a few songs. I guess there's a place for it on the list, but just barely. It's in the lower 2's. I'm probably being generous because I like Henry Rollins, maybe more as a screen presence than a singer. The TV Party song that gives SNL a shout out saves it from being a 1.

punk never really did much for me, always felt you had to be there to really appreciate it this album really could be 2/3 the size or length 1 - terrible, can't stand any of it whereas Another Music In A Different Kitchen had something for me at least this has nothing and could be parody and it would not surprise me just preachy screaming nonsense

Generic punk rock. Nothing special standing out to me here. Six Pack and Tv Party are heavy influencers to The Chats with novelty themes of getting drunk and being a lad. Other than that, it’s just a 35 minute racket. Toward the end of this album I was questioning my existence and my sanity.

Influential my arse !

Was interesting listening to Black Flag (1981) next to The Cure's Pornography (1982). I hear where a lot of bands drew inspiration from these guys, perhaps even The Beastie Boys. Fond of "TV Party" and "Rise Above" otherwise exhausting to listen to the whole album in one sitting. Giving it a 2.5

Not my cup of tea. If you are into this kind of music perhaps they are among the best, but I honestly can't tell if this is a good or bad band within this genre. It's just noise to me and I was having a real hard time to even finish listen to the whole album.

Wasn’t a huge fan of this project. When I saw the cover I was prepared for some heavy music, but was taken back by how punk it sounded. Not horrible, but not for me.

I can see some people liking this album. It just really isn't my speed. This came across as ear-grating l, headache inducing nonsense. I'll stick with the Sex Pistols and the Ramones when I listen to punk rock.

Punk is one of those genres that I've never got on with, this album did nothing to change that. The songs are short lived but unfortunately there's a lot of them and they all sound very similar. 1*

Started off enjoyable but quickly got a bit bored as every song essentially sounds the same. If this was an EP just consisting of the A Side it'd easily be a 4. But its not, so its not.

Childish lyrics, tuneless shouted vocals, unsubtle instrumentation. If a comedy sketch show was to make a parody of a punk album, it would sound like this. One novelty song on an album can be fun, 15 is just tiresome.

A few classics but the sort of macho-Americano punk is not my favourite.

When they sent us Guided by Voices a couple of weeks ago I felt the songs were too short – they were catchy but ended just as they got going. These songs are short too, but most can’t end fast enough for me. There’s some humor in TV Party and Six Pack but it’s pretty juvenile.

Rough and dirty, but also fun and energetic. I liked the energy of the album, but on the other hand I didn't feel like it had a lot of really memorable songs aside from Rise Above and TV Party. It's pretty well-executed for hardcore punk, but maybe just not exactly one of those albums you sit down and listen to while working. At least not until we graduate from 'standing desks' to 'workplace mosh pit', which would DEFINITELY have to be post-COVID

I'm not a huge black flag fan. I never got into the hardcore punk scene, although I really liked Rollins Band. Dirty Projectors cover album of this is one of my all-time faves. This was a fun listen. I wish I could go back in time and play it for a more open-minded, younger version of myself.

Have owned this album on vinyl almost thirty years and it still holds up. A classic hardcore album that is intense, humourous and brutally good!

15 songs, 35 minute run time.... its like music ADHD. It is one of those albums that informed all the other albums in the punk genre moving forward... forever. It was over before I could work up a sweat.... to bad I really was enjoying the ride. Punk Rock out of 5

I could not enjoy this album at all. To my ears, it's an album of discordant guitars and whiny Californians screaming about how miserable their lives are. I know that this album is supposed to be one of the best punk albums ever, but I guess I'm not punk enough to understand it.

If I could have Half as much Energy as a young Henry Rollins I would probably be the strongest man alive. This album is fast, loud, and relentless. The pace zooms along and screams of southern California and Reagan era anger. This is wild and untamed, damaged. But triumphant waving the black flag of rebellion. Makes me really want to have a TV Party

First half of the CD is a 4, but man does it take a turn.

I do not like this kind of music at all. I'll elevate it to a 1.5 because of TV Party.

A bit full on for a Monday

I wanna give it a 5 just for Six Pack and TV Party. The tension, the fury, the random changes in tempo, the call and response. I had this downloaded (probably over many days) on dial up from audiogalaxy, i think it had random glitches from where the torrent didn't completed... just added to the DIY sound. Anyway back to the album ... nostalgia for my teenage punk years probably biases my rating here, yeah its super influential, but would I personally listen to it much anymore? not so sure

FUCKING FUCK YEAH! This is LA punk right here. This band was one of the original, and most influential punk bands of all time, and you can't tell me listening to any track on this album doesn't make you just want to mosh. while i got into punk later in life, this band helped shape what I liked to listen to and opened me up to bands like NOFX, the Descendents, Rancid, and so many others.

There's so much that can be said about this album. It's a cornerstone piece of hardcore punk history. This was one of the albums that began the spit into hardcore as its own genre and put Henry Rollins - the world's scariest boyscout - into the spotlight. It's rough and agressive and very socially concious. It's just damn great and I love it. Full marks.

eh I dunno... I've heard this a few times and can't say I outright like it. I know it's a cultural milestone of some kind for punk rockers but the music is pretty amateur and apart from a few clever lyrics it's really nothing that cool. 3/5 just cause without it there might not have been cooler bands.
