Hardcore = headache
The songs are very short, which grabbed my attention. What interests me most is how raw and dirty the production is it feels very authentic. It’s pure aggression and hostile energy compacted into two minute songs. Punchy, fun, straight to the point. The musicianship isn’t technical at all, in fact the songs are built on simple chords and structures. That’s exactly what gives it its charm it doesn’t try to be too clever. I’m more used to the commercial side of punk, mostly 2000s punk and pop punk, but I can enjoy the raw power in this. It actually grew on me more and more from the first track to the last. Six Pack is the my favourite song from all that song would go crazy at a party. And of course I love beer. (CISK GĦAL DEJEM.)
This is where I split off from the die hard punk fans. I’m just not into the hardcore sound. This does deserve 5 stars for the influence/importance though, no arguments there. I didn’t take away much besides having a better understanding of the type of punk I don’t enjoy. I feel like this is what most people imagine if you say you’re into punk. Rating: 2.5
I know this sort of music eventually got us to green day, and for that I thank them, but the less I say in addition to that, the better.
Hardcore punk is not for me, but I recognize what this album means for the time. 2*
never been a big fan of american punk and i don’t like henry rollins but i did like the sort of replacements sound to it
Henry Rollins is a bit of a legend, just not my legend. This was entertaining in its energy and rawness, but it just didnt have anything standing out for me.
Ništa niščim.
I feel like the guys from Jackass really like this, and I like them a lot. The transitive property only extends so far, though. I found this less objectionable than I expected to, but I still didn't actually like it.

I guess it's a feature of legitimate punk to sound like butt. That's the barrier to entry to keep the normals out. I appreciate that. But I'm not on that side of the fence yet with Black Flag.
I have a hard time being enchanted by the sloppiness of punk rock. The drummer sounds like they’re trying with their whole might to catch up with the band one song and outrunning them the next. Police Story is cool - ACAB
It's 80s, it's punk. Not a good chance i was gonna like it from jump. And i didn't. At this point I'm not sure how i ended up loving the dead milkmen and violent femmes. Who i heard similarities to in a couple of the songs, like tv party. This album got me thinking about how if i was a teen or young adult in the 80s i would've been insufferable. And how I'm glad that my earliest memories basically start in 1990
There’s a real argument that the punk movement is the singularity that opened up music to the masses. Like folk music before it, its ethos is that music is for the people and should be in the hands of the people. But it takes it a step further by asserting one does not need to be a musician to produce music. Punk frees its creators from the shackles of melody and meter by being an onslaught of mood. I view it a lot like finger painting. It’s a lot of fun to do, it’s where we all start, and it commends the creation regardless of quality. I don’t typically like spending my days staring at finger paintings. Ok on to Black Flag. I know these dudes are pioneers for hardcore punk, I respect the hell out of it. Henry Rollins is an institution and has put over many other artists on his various tv shows, radio shows, and other platforms. I feel like the guy is a raging cunt and I think that’s the point when you’re listening to it. The lead guitarist plays like a dude that wanted to be in a thrash metal band but all the metal guys were like, “dude get better at playing guitar.” And he was like, “fuck that I’m just a punk rocker I guess.” Which I can identify with to an extent. As for songs I actually enjoyed start to finish, I think it was only Damaged 1. I liked the slow down, sludge of it. It felt like the first time the band all knew what was supposed to happen. And I think I was excited for the album to be over. A one feels to low. A three feels to high. Punk is a genre where I generally feel ill equipped and ill informed to have a well thought out opinion. So I feel ok settling on a two.
idk boring as fuck
Can't say I particularly enjoyed. A bit too shouty. Good energy, can see where it fits in the timeline but not something I would listen to again.
Couldn't really get past the first couple songs. Really difficult to listen to screamo / metal / whatever aharmonic mess this was.
I'm sure it's vital, just not a huge fan of punk
I can hear the influence directly from Sex Pistols so I’m not sure why this one is considered influential…. Even his voice is similar (but worse). Mostly not great. TV Party is hilarious though.
Love me some Black Flag…just in 7” doses rather than LP doses.
Not special
The title of this album is well chosen. You have to like this genre to be able to judge how good or bad this album is.
It feels like something I would have enjoyed as a 16 year old, beers etc. 20 years on, it's a little less up my street now. I did like the music mix that was played after the album of related tracks mind.
What I See was brilliant. The rest, less so. I believe this is rather influential, but I simply didn't enjoy it. Perhaps I enjoyed What I See as it was more structurally coherent. A few too many atonal, diverting parts. +1 for What I See.
Bit too hardcore punk for me.
It's punk, not for us really.
Fun listen. Not my thing.
Just not my thing
So this is the famed Black Flag. What Henry Rollins did before he became the Henry Rollins we all know, love, and go out for ginger brews and violent discussions with. It's an album for that rare species of testosterone-driven youngsters with a weak spot for alcohol and destruction. I'm not in that demographic any more, and probably never really was.
I think I heard the song Rise Above before but didn't know the rest. I know of Henry Rollins but don't really know his music. Some of the tracks are kind of fun, like TV Party, but on the whole it's just kind of noisy and amateurish-sounding.
A short album but a struggle to get through. It's raw and it has a lot of energy but not for me at this age
Their debut album. Punk. It's a decent enough Punk album but they're late to the party by four or five years. The sound is also a bit hollow as well as the lyrics. Earlier Punk had authentic and real world, harsh messages. This seems more like an angry fourteen year old pissed off with his parents. There's much better and believable Punk than this from the 70s.
Sounds like Ramones if Ramones was a bit shit. No pirate would listen to this.
Another punk album.
Primitive punk, sounds like a debut album. I find their voices hoarse, rather than agressive. The most redeemable part of this album are the lyrics. I do also like the instrumentals a fair amount.
This album was so bad I almost found it funny
Quite fun at the start but it seemed to get progressively worse as it went on
Very average for me. I think again nothing super memorable, but was alright.
I’m sorry but this is just not my stuff. I understand it is fundamental stuff to the genre and deserves its spot on a list like this but I personally just don’t enjoy it too much. Also, my attention span is short but not 15 songs in 35 minutes short.
It sounds like my son's band from when they were in junior high school.
Just not good. There’s a huge quality gap between this album and Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables
Muy punk años 90. No está mal del todo pq la guitarra suena bien en algunas canciones. Lo de gritar por gritar en las canciones un poco meh pero oye, es lo que se llevaba
It took me a minute to appreciate punk as a teen, and unfortunately I've outgrown it now. I tended to prefer the UK stuff a bit more but Black Flag is hard not to like. Surprisingly wholesome.
Well this definitely had some great energy. Not exactly my style but I enjoyed the edginess.
Not a fan
1.5
2.5
kinda generic punk idk it was ok
Terrible singing, yelling, so-so musically. Very punk, not my cup of tea
Not my favourite genre. But I guess it's ok
I mean, it is what it is. Forceful, punchy, quick, punk/hardcore. Not really my thing or anything particularly engaging about it. Imagine it’d be good to see live and let lose to, but as an album, can’t see me going towards it to listen through pleasure. We drink, we party, we fuck shit up 🤷🏻♂️ Gets pretty repetitive and get the message not long into the album and then much the same throughout. Pretty relentless, and not in a good way. Eye rolling and sighing when each next song starts and sounds like the last. I get it 🙄 (2.5)
со всем уважением... большую часть панка я могу слушать только когда нужен нойззз на фоне
2/5 punk rock
Not enjoyable. 2.
An interesting listen, but not an album I'll ever return to.
I like punk and props to this album for being 34 mins long. However, I prefer melodic punk, and this ain’t it! Still, not the worst I’ve heard but I wouldn’t listen again.
4/10 While on the one hand I can see how the Angry lyrics could connect, and musically it isn't terrible - although punky, it has definite skill to it - on the other hand I'll happily never hear it again. You can hear how this would go into to be honest and polished into the influences of later US punk bands and deserves it's place on this list. I just don't happen to like it.
Was not in the right mood
Just a bit too snarky/clangy/one-note for me
1.5/5
Groupe inconnu. =>2/5
This just feels... a bit much?
Yikes - not for the sound of mind!
This was pretty disappointing when it was released. It still is.
Probably a historic punk rock album but who cares. Not the worst thing I've ever heard and it's short at least but still. Not something I need to listen to ever again. Really grating by the end of it. 3.75/10 (1.875/5)
It's nice to finally put a singing voice to the face of Henry Rollins who I've seen pop up throughout the years in various documentaries and interviews. I like the sound of the guitar. It's rough and heavy. Thick and fuzzy. The notes the guitar is actually playing excited me slightly less. Better than most hardcore punk I would say but still doesn't make me want to check out more of Black Flag. The vocals are your typical hardcore punk vocals really. Loud, aggressive, not melodic in the slightest. Almost shouting. Thankfully, like most punk, it is quite a short listen. I would have started to hate it more and more as time went on. Not quite my kind of music, but good to stick on if you're in the mood for something aggressive.
It's funny, I've probably seen more Black Flag t-shirts than listened to their songs by 1000:1 if not more. Definitely remember the fighty individuating teenage years, wherein I listened to fair amount of punk music, but I was apparently too late. Didn't super enjoy listening to this, but at least now I can say that I have.
+1 Rise Above, aggressive, unfocused musicianship
A harcore fan of punk but not a fan of hardcore punk. I grew adolescent with punk rock, the Buzzcocks, the Cramps, the Sex Pistols, The Clash, the Gen X, even "les Beeru", but never heard of them... And I hear nice things here and there in this album, but it's mainly boring and noisy to me. Talk about growing old ;-p. Yet I'd give a few points here to recognize the influence it could have had on one of my favourite the Toy Dolls, especially when singing in choir (yes, yes I hear it at times)
Nah it ain’t hitting for me
thanks i hate it
Hard rock/punk/metal mix. Introspective personal lyrics, more reminiscent of later post-punk and even nu metal Best track - TV Party
Leuke punk, maar ook niks aparts
I listened to this whole thing and unsurprisingly TV Party was the only song I liked. Otherwise allot of mediocre noise
Maybe punk just isn't my thing.
Found to be almost grating to the ear
Henry Rollins seems like a great guy. But Henry Rollins is a pretty intolerable singer. He did get better. His use of his voice for the Rollins Band in the 90s is definitely less grating. But he also started mixing in lots of spoken word, and then did whole albums and performances of spoken word as a solo artist. So maybe he agrees with me.
I like the energy, but I don’t know that I like the vocals enough to get through this again.
Not really my style of music but I got through the majority of the album. I can only do punk music in small doses.
Completely understandable why this included but not one for me 2*
Once again, beef with punk
At the risk of sounding like my mother, it’s just a lot of noise isn’t it! Hard to find too many redeeming features in this one unfortunately.
Defo an album that can only be really appreciated if you were in the scene when they were about. TV party is quite amusing )and feels like a massive influence on the Beastie Boys), the last song I quite liked, I think the riffs were slower. Otherwise, yeah it’s a massive influence etc etc, but I’m out.
Not really in a punk mood today, but it was only 35 minutes, so that was a bonus.
It was fine at first but man does it get exhausting the more you listen to it
It’s too angry for me. I’ve never liked Henry Rollings personality and suspected I wouldn’t like his music. I guess this list has helped me confirm the fact I don’t like his music. Cool.
Bollocks, another punk offering. At least they are short.
“I've got a six pack and nothing to do! I got a six pack and I don't need you!” OK, Henry.
# Album Name: Damaged # Artist: Black Flag # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Decent opening track in Rise above. Pretty basic lyrics but some raw energy. Fuck me, i did not realise this way henry rollins lol. I wonder where that sucker came from. Now i know. The production on the album seems pretty fucked. Its like someone is playing the record in the room down the hall and i can hear it from the distance. Thats a big miss and a big shame. This band could and should have a big fuck off sound. Shame it doesnt live up to its reputation. I have a soft spot for british punk but this misses the mark for me. Theres way too many songs below average. # Top Tunes: Rise above / Thirsty and miserable. # Would I listen to it again? No
I never got into Black Flag when I was younger and exploring punk/hardcore, and they still don’t appeal to me at this point in my life. It’s just a half hour that I wanted to hurry up and get through.
dnf
Very raw and angry punk. Honestly not a very pleasant listen. Stand-out: Damaged II
Not for me.
Not my jam
4.5/10
I get why this is good, and I typically love classic hardcore. This was a surprisingly difficult listen
I wish I could give this a 2.5. It's too harsh for my taste, but there are interesting ideas.
Same issue ive had with other Punk albums. A bit too angry without musical prowess. Interesting, but not amazing
Yet another punk album, and they are all the same; shouting lyrics, fast tempo and wall of guitars! Not a lot here that is different but the song intros do allow for some hope ... but no ... they just go back to the standard genre. I did quite like 'TV Story' though. Nothing particularly noteworthy otherwise.
Too much for me
Legendary punk rock from early 80s. Loved this kind of music as a teenager back then… but now I am older, and have moves on
I'm not a huge punk fan but this is not terrible. It's not too wall of fuzz sounding as some punk can be. The singing is not terrible either, I'm sure there is a great punk type message there if I looked at the lyrics. Not bad but I probably don't need to listen to it again.
Ughh
Just not for me.. 4/10
Certainly one of the angrier albums I've heard in this project. There are good bones on this album, a solid foundation. But some of the songs border on incoherence and really detract from the songs that are a bit more fleshed out and actually decent. Punk is slowly growing on me, but this isn't quite it. Top tracks: Rise Above, Damaged I
It was okay
Er staat veel te veel punk in deze lijst. Er kan heel wat uit. En dit lijkt mij een prima kandidaat. Wat voegt het toe ten opzichte van de rest? Ik ga het niet opzoeken, maar muzikaal in elk geval niets. 1,5 ster.
Mystic spiral did it first 4/10
Not so good, but I heard it anyway
Sometimes punk works for me. Mostly it doesn't. This is great for what it is. And I'm always grateful that bands like this can never sustain a song for more than 2 1/2 minutes. I can deal with the songs where they actually tried to craft a song. But the ones that are just let using their instruments to jerk off? Not so much. An extra star for being ahead of the punk curve for the 80s.
sbpunk
Quite liked the punk vibe at the start but by the end just found it irritating.
My knowledge of black flag before listening to this album was the reference in the Atari’s version of the song boys of Summer (they replaced Grateful Dead sticker with black flag sticker) and a bit of in between song banter from Ryan Adams, where he was stating that some people south of the mason Dixon line listen to Black flag, intimating that they weren’t all dumb shit kickers. So I get that black flag is a cultural touch point, but on my first full album exposure to them I was not super impressed
I didn't hate it. A couple of songs were kind of fun. Other than that, I'm not sure I really see the appeal. Maybe Rollins became a better front man later on, but he doesn't strike me as special on this debut.
noise
Not a fan
Besides the 3 songs I knew, this was just noise...
Annoying British men whining over unremarkable guitars and it's "hardcore"?
Not a mad fan?
I can now say that I have listened to a Black Flag album.
i know i should have probably expected it from the cover but the shouting kinda caught me off guard at first LOL. also lowkey surprised by the short run time for each song, but in this case i don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing. it’s not my usual taste in music but i actually don’t hate it? tv party is actually such a fun song 😋 i respect the album and it has its fun moments, but i don’t think i would go back to listen to it that often, which is why i’m giving it a 2… i would give it a 2.5 if i could though!
If an angry teenager was music, this would be it. I liked a few of the earlier tracks and was considering giving it a reasonably high rating at that point but by the second half of the album it got a bit much and I found it samey and depressing. Fave Track: TV Party Rating: 2
Not for me.
This is something I probably would have enjoyed more in my early teens, but I have never been a real fan of just yelling for vocals. Just not my thing, and I will never listen to this album again.
Middle school beginner music?
40/100 Maybe this is a bit too far outside my comfort zone. And this isn't my style. But just as I was warming up to the record (witty lyrics and awesome instrumentals) in the middle part, the quality took a nosedive towards the end. Maybe it takes some getting used to but I also don't think the quality is there and variety is basically non-existent.
Un po' metal, un po' scarno 2/3
Not for me too hard.
Not my type of music. It was just too much music and i just couldn't enjoy it. 2/5
Meh. I don't think I would ever choose to listen to this again.
Noisy. One memorable tune. Maybe.
15 songs, in 35 minutes. Made this listen tolerable. All I ever knew about Black Flag was Henry Rollins had something to do with them. I knew him more as an actor & now know why he likes to chew the scenery. On the plus side, all I’ve go left to do is have a brew .
Man, I know I’m probably supposed to like this but it just didn’t do much for me. A lot of noise with nothing really memorable. Although a 35 min runtime with 15 songs is quite impressive. I’ll put my rock horns up and give this a star for each raised finger.
Das ist nicht so meine Musik. Zugegeben sehr gut produziert und abwechslungsreich arrangiert, aber in einem Rutsch durchhören ist dennoch für mich nicht möglich.
Good energy, but I felt it didn't have a lot of variety and I got a bit tired of it towards the end.
It’s got a great beat, and you can smash your head against the wall to it!
This is such suburban teenage boy music. Bleh. Rise Above was reasonable, if you like this genre. And I actually chuckled with TV Party and enjoyed it. But overall it's not my thing.
It’s a bit much
Punk rock \../
I put this on while I was making dinner, didn’t have the same relaxing effects as the jazz album did. Extra star for the shoutout to the Jeffersons.
This may be the point I have to admit that I don’t understand punk music
My rating of 1 the first time I listened to this was too harsh. It was much more listenable to me this time around, but I'm just simply not a hardcore fan. I will always appreciate how good punk rockers are at their instruments though. Favorite track: TV Party
not my thing and not anything special but wasnt painful. 2
I know that the low quality sound and recordings is kind of "part of the gig" when it comes to punk albums, but in the age of high fidelity music streaming at our fingertips, it really makes things like this unpleasant to listen back to. If you can get past the quality issue, the mixing doesn't seem too bad, though. I don't know, each track mostly sounded the same to me, and I just didn't get anything out of it.
First song was pretty good and it went downhill from there.
Heavy College radio in the 90s. Lots of shouting but only so much to listen to.
Well, this certainly is a southern CA punk album. I appreciate the youthful energy, the raw rudimentary playing, the lo-fi....everything. The time and place of this album is very apparent in the sound, along with the angry youthful ranting against things they don't understand. I think this inward directed punk (poor me, life sucks, I hate you all!) doesn't resonate like the more political punk of the Sex Pistols, or the smart lyrics of Bad Religion or the Clash.
GKDIDFJEIWWFFFFF#$21+++ LOTS OF RAGE. THIS ALBUM MADE ME KICK OVER A PARKED LIME SCOOTER, RAWWWWRRRR
OK. Bit too shouty for my taste
One of those albums that is worth hearing even if it's not quite for me. I guess the US brand of punk/hardcore didn't quite land in the UK, and that kind of genre throughout this project has been littered with US albums that we just didn't listen to. I remember Henry Rollins doing his spoken word gig at my University in the early 90s and I'd never heard of him. Anyway, nice to hear a bit of anger and some structure to punk.
At this point in my life, this (and I use the term loosely) “music” is just stupid. Noise with some idiot kid yelling at me about how miserable he is. I think there was only one song where they actually tried to sing pitches, and then they were terrible at it. I can’t tell if they’re laughing or serious. Either way, it made me laugh a number of times, and for that reason alone I give it two stars. But basically, pure crap.
i’m sure it’s good i just don’t like this type of music
Wouldn't have liked this at the time and don't like it now. All very thrashy and shouty and repetitive
This is punishing not because it is just grating but its just an endless barrage of complaining without a range of emotion or sense of being connected with other people. Husker Du is so much more interesting and powerful than this.
I know they're pioneers and all and there's a message in there somewhere but It's just not my thing. Gorilla Biscuits and CIV I prefer just for their more melodic nature.
This band reminds me of high school. Not because I listened to it... But because there was a group of "punks" who wore the combat boots, denim jackets with pins and patches, had Mohawks, piercings, never showered... And didn't give a Fuck. In hindsight, they were a nuisance. I get that a lot of things can ifluence how someone acts, or dresses. Music really has that effect on people. Unfortunately Punk has the worst following. At least in hygiene. That's how this record sounds to me. I must give credit where credit is due... This album on the surface is just "I don't care. I give no fucks" - but lyrically they do paint a picture. And I think, despite the repetitive 1 to 3 syllable words explaining hate, anarchy, being pissed off - over all FUCK YOU. There is some thought to the lyrics. The song in mind is TV Party. Surface level it is a bunch of kids who have nothing else to do but watch tv. Which is very uninspiring. But I took it almost in the way that the creation and popularization, and of course addictive quality TV has, it has rendered them feeling that they have nothing better to do. That TV has kind of corrupted people's minds; they've become sheep. And purposely distracted. Maybe I'm putting too much thought into it, or giving too much credit. But music is suppose to invoke thought. And when I listened through that lense, it was almost genius. But! I still don't like Punk. The vocal delivery is annoying. The Instruments are played poorly. It's aggressive as intended but it comes of gimmicky. Black Flag is one of the more popular punk bands. Every punk rocker has their patch sewn to their denim or leather jacket. It's almost like if you don't like Black Flag, you're not a real punk rocker. Of course, this is speculation. There is definitely an audience for this genre and this band. But I'd gladly stand far from those smelly kids.
Its tough for me to enjoy most punk. The constant rapid 16th notes with no variability is too thick to push through. I can hear some interesting stuff from the guitar on this album and interesting drum choices from time to time. Life of Pain and Damaged I are highlights.
Ni po čemu distinktivno. Bez nekog utiska.
Meh, not really my thing. I respect it though. Highlight was 'Rise Above' but still not really my thing.
The album started off on, but the the last 2/3 of it all started to sound the same to me. Not really my jam, but people who are into harder music might like it.
Pituus hyvä
This is not for me. I mean, it could have been worse. But I still did not enjoy it.
Hm. No.
I did not enjoy this
Henry Rollins fan for life! Lets have a TV Party!
Started off alright, good solid punk, but got boring over the course of the album. All sounded pretty much the same. 2 stars.
Oh yay another hardcore punk album. I was hoping I'd like this more since I've been enjoying post-punk recently but I was still pretty irritated with it by the end. I will say that I didn't mind the first track and didn't hate it as much as some of the other hardcore punk albums I've gotten but it's far from standing out as a diamond in the rough in the genre for me.
Angry
Some mildly interesting songs for the genre. 2.2
I was quite hungover and in a lovely cottage. It's possible that isn't the perfect place for this hardcore punk album. It wasn't totally terrible, and at times it was quite interesting, but equally quite a lot of it was just dreadful noise.
In isolation there are some great tracks here but as an album it’s a bit of a one trick pony and not exploring anything new earning it a very middle of the road 2.5 stars.
Juste un gros mur de son et de colère. J'imagine que c'était un son très en marge au début des années 80. Demeure difficile à écouter aujourd'hui.
Still like TV Party but I’m just not into this other than that. Meh.
Only for mosh pit thrashing.
boring
Black Flag, more like Sack Sag.
Henry Rollins is pretty cool I guess, but he (and Black Flag) were never really my jam.
Too much testosterone
Not my kind of punk, I don't like the way he sings. Fun to see live but not to listen sitting at a desk. That is to say, the experience is fun but the music itself is not great.
so aggressive, so much noise.
Punk is still bad 2
Have a snickers, you're not you when your hungry, maybe some tai chi or transcendental meditation might help you there hot head. Don't really connect with all the anger well maybe when I think about how McDonalds stopped making the honey mustard sauce.
angry music fav: tv party
Too hardcore punky
It's a punk album. It is not good.
Lmao
Not my cup of tea.
Tja, je had er bij moeten zijn, denk ik!
Toffe vent die Henry, en zijn spoken word bio over zijn jaren op tour met deze band zijn fantastisch. Maar de muziek is eigenlijk niet te doen. Toen: baanbrekend. Nu: 2 dimensionale herrie.
Svårt att lyssna igenom
For a while I thought I was listening to a punk parody album.
Erm, no thank you. What an awfully shouty man.
I’m not sure about this one’s rating, but it really didn’t give me an impression. Maybe if I re-listened it would be 3 stars.
1981 is surely too late for Punk? Regardless this is fun energetic, talentless and crass. I can understand why it was popular but really speaking you should be listening to the Ramones, Pistols or some other band who did it sooner.
Bit too punk for me. Shouty. Glimpse of 90s - 00s punk inspo
Bit of a snore
Boring - punk isn't really for me. 2/5
Not really feeling this. TV Party is a fun standout, but that kind of slacker humour seems at odds with the music and also with a lot of the other, angrier lyrics. Maybe hardcore punk in general isn't for me? If I'm gonna listen to something loud, distorted and unmelodic then I want it to be heavier, tighter and riff-ier than this.
Why do you torture me. Someone use this in a film now.
Demasiado enérgico. Punk colérico. Poco melódico. Voz con autoridad. Le falta algo más de pausa
while the wiki for this album says it was very influential, there’s just not much special about it to me, and i’m fairly burned out on punk recently.
Harsh but surprisingly not horrible. Couldn’t just sit down to listen to this but it does display the intensity of hardcore
Hardcore Punk is usually not my cup of tea but Henry Rollins knows how to lead a band behind him. Maybe they're not meant to be funny but some moments are exactly that. I can enjoy it but I will not listen to it it too much.
Ok punkkia
Give me the clash, elvis Costello, velvet underground. Sex pistols violent females. Devo over this. Sounded like the same song over and over again.
I get it. I got it after the first track. The unfortunate issue with thrash punk is that there is virtually zero room for experimentation or expansion. It’s so shoe-holed into a very specific sound. It’s the same sound and same emotional provocation constantly. Much like the album, there’s really nothing much else to say. Why does the end of the tracks keep getting cut off? Would it kill the producer to just let the guitar finish its note one time? Also why does Damaged II precede Damaged I? Not like it really matters though - you can’t tell the difference between the two. Would rate 1.5 if I could.
I can appreciate the roots of punk music, but it's not an easy listen. You can hear the age in this album.
Not for me unfortunately. Can appreciate the work on there. Rollins is one hell of a lead. Won’t be returning to this one
Вообще норм альбом, но жанровое восприятие, соре
Risa Above has a cracking good riff and Room 13 work well within the theme. No More is different and again works well with the lyrics. The rest? Meh. Boy, we need a good record.
Well, a few songs in, I was ready to skip through the rest in a perfunctory way: definitely not my thing. But I was looking at the lyrics as I went. The sheer intensity and honesty of the songwriting was arresting, even if it's not crafted (nor set to music) in ways I would prefer.
So many hardcore albums on this list! Really, hardcore is a bit of a niche genre, so we really don't need quite so many records. But, if you are going to listen to one hardcore album, this really is the one. Focused, aggressive, and pretty well recorded (for the time and budget, and certainly within the genre). Greg Ginn leads the band with (relatively) inventive playing, and a pleasing amount of noise. This is Henry Rollins' first album with Black Flag, and he is a charismatic and powerful vocalist, and can project both focused anger and sarcastic humour. Why anyone (including Black Flag) ever bothered recording another hardcore album, I just don't know. But, while I really would have loved to see Black Flag live in 1981, I do not need to listen to this, or any other hardcore albums, ever again.
Hostile, aggressive, and mostly tuneless. Give me The Replacements' take on punk over this stuff any day.
I’m pretty sure this is the band Jesse Pinkman played with. Was waiting for Fallacies to come up, but it must be on a different album.
Early 80’s punk classic that I couldn’t get into. Vocals weren’t my thing, some interesting lyrics, but not enough to keep me engaged
I also need to belong.
An important album in the world of independent music and hardcore punk, I acknowledge, but it can be grating to listen to after a while courtesy of Rollins' vocals. Certainly worth a listen, but this just isn't my jam.
You can tell exactly who made this list. The album picks skew to certain eras and genres. Not a fan of this one, cool cover though.
I'm probably being a bit harsh here
I don’t like metal
Look, I’m a metal head, I enjoy punk, thrash etc. I’ve heard of black flag - and I get the message. The lyrics are good, the idea are good, but the music and mixing is terrible. You thought Metallica St Anger sounded tinny?! Wait till you hear this. It sounds like it’s being played through a telephone. The other problem is, there’s just no contrast. No light and dark, it’s just full on hard punk from the get go with no let up - and frankly, it loses effectiveness pretty quickly.
This is an unrelenting and angry collection where this listener can seriously empathize with the title.
Leider viel zu roh für meinen Geschmack.
One song was enough..
There are some places and Times where I could dig this, but it's not many of them...
The good thing about this album is that it's only 35 minutes and 3 seconds. Sounded like a standard punk album. A couple songs on here that aren't too bad; I liked TV Party, even the highest played song Rise Above didn't hit with me. Overall, wasn't my thing. 2 stars.
I like some of the bands they clearly later inspired, but it's a bit raw and samey for me. 2/5
This one wasn't nearly as bad as I'd expected. I usually hate punk rock, hardcore even more so. But this was at least listenable without skipping more than two or three tracks. That's quite something! I guess it's because the guitars are actually quite good. Not good enough to enjoy the music, but good enough to not hate it. That's something.
2.5/5. Difficult one for me to enjoy. I think if I was in the mood, this would be great, but after listening to it all day - nothing stood out to me. Maybe another day, it will be awesome.
Not my type of music.
It might be an important artifact, but overall just didn’t age well and didn’t connect with me
A little too manic for me, needed a bit more of a hook
I don't think I've ever heard a full track from Black Flag. I was interested in finally hearing something from this band just because they are Black Flag, but after listening I'm confident in why I haven't listened to the band before. The guitars are grinding noise, and the vocals are raspy shouts. I don't know when you would decide to listen to this music. I could skip it.
rise above rise above
Nope
At least it was quick.
Loud and obnoxious 2 🌟
No thank you
The more albums I listen to, the more I realize I like what I like already. Old grump I guess.
Punk.
Not a fan of punk music. It was OK.
Loud and obnoxious 2 🌟
Punk that seemed slightly less aggravating than some others before however it's still a genre and album that I cannot ensure for longer than 10 minutes
5/10
5/10
Eh. Its super punk or whatever. I was never as enamored with punk as my peers were. Super basic and boring music, wouldnt listen to it again.
5/10
eh, not for me
Fast and furious, 15 short metal punk songs in just over half an hour. Making rock achievable again.
I gave this a shot, but I didn’t enjoy it. I don’t think punk is really for me.
Razumijem voljenje ovog albuma od strane pankera, i sve to stoji, međutim meni ne drži vodu previše, ali mi je najbolja TV Party jer mi je smiješna i dobra u isto vrijeme :'D
It's...I don't know, fine? I don't despise it enough to brand it with a 1 and seemed OK with a few songs. I guess there's a place for it on the list, but just barely. It's in the lower 2's. I'm probably being generous because I like Henry Rollins, maybe more as a screen presence than a singer. The TV Party song that gives SNL a shout out saves it from being a 1.
Was interesting listening to Black Flag (1981) next to The Cure's Pornography (1982). I hear where a lot of bands drew inspiration from these guys, perhaps even The Beastie Boys. Fond of "TV Party" and "Rise Above" otherwise exhausting to listen to the whole album in one sitting. Giving it a 2.5
Don’t like live recordings
Wasn’t a huge fan of this project. When I saw the cover I was prepared for some heavy music, but was taken back by how punk it sounded. Not horrible, but not for me.
.
Didn’t like punk in the 70s, still don’t ! **
Punk's not really my thing...
tara liked it less than me but i didnt really care. i'd rather listen to it than some of the others.
Ok if you like that kinda thing
When they sent us Guided by Voices a couple of weeks ago I felt the songs were too short – they were catchy but ended just as they got going. These songs are short too, but most can’t end fast enough for me. There’s some humor in TV Party and Six Pack but it’s pretty juvenile.
Just not for me
Best listened to while violently slamming into others in a mosh pit. First few songs are ok but it gets boring fast due to lack of variety
I appreciate hardcore punk but it makes my ears sad
I could not enjoy this album at all. To my ears, it's an album of discordant guitars and whiny Californians screaming about how miserable their lives are. I know that this album is supposed to be one of the best punk albums ever, but I guess I'm not punk enough to understand it.
Not really my kind of music.
Goodness. What noise.
was ok - would fit a skateboarding video soundtrack but wouldn't listen to it normally
Acho que curto o que punk representa mas não curto tanto a música
Hardcore just isnt my thing.
I’m not young and I’m not angry… this album wasn’t recorded for me!
The TV Party they mock so ruthlessly sounds absolutely off the chain compared to anything that I have attended in the past couple of decades...
Punk Rock, 1981 -> 1
I’ve learnt my lesson with hardcore punk, it’s a no from me
This kind of rock is too aggressive for me.
Ahh. Punk rock at its punkiest. I remember “TV Party” was played on Dr Demento back in the 80s, but didn’t know anything else…
never again. noise pollution
It’s a thin line between hardcore punk and heavy metal.
Not my jam.
They're like Rage Against the Machine, if Rage was a high school garage band, Zack hadn't yet had his voice change from puberty, and they sucked.
just sounds like yelling to bizarre sounds.
I am definitely not drunk/angry enough to enjoy this.
Meh
Not my cup of tea
Now more than just a reference in the updated Boys of Summer song. Not in a good way
Damaged is definitely the word. Crap.
Demasiado dark, no me gusto
Nop
This was horrendous. I did not have to listen to this before I die.
Infantiler Lärm
This was an album of all albums
Nope
punk
Gym playlist ig
absolute cheeks
Don’t know about a black flag. This album is definitely a red flag to keep away from. 1/5 17/3/26
